Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lifestyle habits after middle age significantly impact the maintenance of cognitive function in older adults. Nutritional intake is closely related to lifestyle habits; therefore, nutrition is a pivotal factor in the prevention of dementia in the preclinical stages. Matcha green tea powder (matcha), which contains epigallocatechin gallate, theanine, and caffeine, has beneficial effects on cognitive function and mood. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study over 12 months to examine the effect of matcha on cognitive function and sleep quality. METHODS Ninety-nine participants, including 64 with subjective cognitive decline and 35 with mild cognitive impairment were randomized, with 49 receiving 2 g of matcha and 50 receiving a placebo daily. Participants were stratified based on two factors: age at baseline and APOE genotype. Changes in cognitive function and sleep quality were analyzed using a mixed-effects model. RESULTS Matcha consumption led to significant improvements in social acuity score (difference; -1.39, 95% confidence interval; -2.78, 0.002) (P = 0.028) as evaluated by the perception of facial emotions in cognitive function. The primary outcomes, that is, Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study Activity of Daily Living scores, showed no significant changes with matcha intervention. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores indicated a trend toward improvement with a difference of 0.86 (95% confidence interval; -0.002, 1.71) (P = 0.088) between the groups in changes from baseline to 12 months. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests regular consumption of matcha could improve emotional perception and sleep quality in older adults with mild cognitive decline. Given the widespread availability and cultural acceptance of matcha green tea, incorporating it into the daily routine may offer a simple yet effective strategy for cognitive enhancement and dementia prevention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive functions in older adults using NHANES, a national US population study dataset, and to explore the causal association with Mendelian randomization (MR) using the UK Biobank. METHODS First, an observational study was conducted with the NHANES database with participants ≥60 years. Sleep duration was measured with accelerometers for 7 consecutive days. Participants were divided into habitual short sleep (<7 h) and long sleep (>9 h) groups. Cognitive functions were measured with the CERAD Word Learning sub-set, Animal Fluency, and Digit Symbol Substitution test (DSST). Multivariate regression models were used to explore relationships between sleep duration and cognitive functions. Second, bidirectional MR was conducted with data for self-reported sleep duration, which came from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) comprising 446,118 adults from the UK Biobank, and general cognitive performance, which was obtained from a recent GWAS study (N = 257,841). Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) was used as the primary estimation of the outcome. RESULTS In the observational study, 2687 participants were included. Sleep duration was associated with cognitive functions in a non-linear way. Habitual long sleep (>9°h) was associated with lower scores on DSST (OR = 0.01, p = .003) in the fully-adjusted model. The association between habitual short sleep and cognitive functions was insignificant. For the MR, genetically predicted lower general cognitive performance was causally associated with a higher prevalence of habitual short sleep (OR = 0.97, p = 5.1 × 10-7) and long sleep (OR = 0.97, p = 8.87 × 10-16). DISCUSSION Short and long sleep duration might be both causally associated with worse outcomes of cognitive functions in older adults, highlighting the importance of maintaining sleep health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR), characterized by subjective cognitive complaints and slow gait in older populations, is associated with sleep duration. However, the association between MCR and daytime nap duration has not been thoroughly explored. METHODS Baseline data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were used in this study. MCR was defined as the coexistence of subjective cognitive complaints and objective slow gait speed without a history of dementia or mobility disability. Daytime nap duration was categorized into four groups: no napping, short napping (<30 min), moderate napping (30-89 min) and extended napping (≥90 min). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the association of daytime napping duration and MCR. RESULTS A total of 4230 individuals aged ≥60 were included in the current analysis, of which 463 were diagnosed with MCR. Moderate napping of 30-89 min per day was found to be significantly associated with lower odds of MCR compared with the reference group of no napping. In subgroup analysis, individuals with sleep durations of <7 h per night had lower odds of MCR in the model that adjusted for all potential confounders with ≥30 min daytime nap duration compared with no napping. Interestingly, for people with a night sleep duration of 7-8 h, only those with a moderate nap of 30-89 min had lower odds of MCR than non-nappers after adjustment for potential confounders. CONCLUSION A moderate nap of 30-89 min could lower the odds of MCR, especially for older adults with a night sleep duration of ≤8 h.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of poor sleep quality and sleep apnea differs by race and ethnicity and may contribute to racial disparities in cognitive aging. We investigated whether sleep quality and sleep apnea risk were associated with cognitive function and decline and whether the associations differed by race/ethnicity. METHODS Participants from the Kaiser Healthy Aging and Diverse Life Experiences (KHANDLE; N = 1690; mean age: 75.7 years) study, a cohort of Asian, Black, Latino, and White participants, completed a modified Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index assessing subjective sleep quality, latency, duration, disturbances, sleep medication use, and daytime dysfunction. Sleep apnea risk was measured by questions about snoring, tiredness, and whether apnea was observed. Executive function and verbal episodic memory were assessed at three time points over an average of 2.7 years with the Spanish and English Neuropsychological Assessment Scale. We fit linear mixed-effect models and stratified analyses by race/ethnicity. RESULTS Higher sleep apnea risk was associated with faster declines in verbal episodic memory (β ^ sleep apnea = -0.02, 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.04, -0.001) but not in executive function. Poorer sleep quality was associated with lower levels of and faster decline in executive function but not in verbal episodic memory. Race/ethnicity modified these associations: compared to estimated effects among White participants, poorer global sleep quality (β ^ sleep*time = -0.02, 95% CI, -0.02, -0.01) was associated with larger effects on decline in executive function among Black participants. Estimated effects of some individual sleep quality components were also modified by race/ethnicity; for example, sleep medication use was associated with faster declines in executive function (β ^ sleep*time = -0.05, 95% CI, -0.07, -0.03) and verbal episodic memory β ^ sleep*time = -0.04, 95% CI, -0.07, -0.02) among Black participants compared to White participants. DISCUSSION Observational evidence indicates sleep quality is a promising target for addressing racial/ethnic disparities in cognitive aging, especially among Black older adults. Highlights Sleep apnea risk was associated with faster declines in verbal episodic memory but not executive function among all participants.Global sleep quality was associated with lower levels of and faster decline in executive function but not verbal episodic memory among all participants.Black older adults were particularly susceptible to the estimated adverse cognitive impacts of global sleep quality, particularly the use of sleep medication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality has been linked to depression in older adults, but results of the association between daytime napping and depression remains limited and conflicting. Moreover, whether the association of daytime napping with depression varies by nighttime sleep quality is unclear. Hence, we examined the associations of daytime napping and nighttime sleep quality with depressive symptoms in older Chinese. METHODS A total of 16,786 participants aged ≥50 from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study second-round examination (2008-2012) were included in this cross-sectional study. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), napping and demographic data were collected by face-to-face interview using a computerized questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratio (OR) of depressive symptoms for napping and sleep quality. RESULTS The prevalence of depressive symptoms (GDS score > 5) and poor global sleep quality (PSQI score ≥ 6) was 5.3 and 31.9%, respectively. Compared to non-nappers, nappers showed significantly higher odds of depressive symptoms, with OR (95% confidence interval (CI)) being 1.28 (1.11-1.49). The odds of depressive symptoms for daytime napping varied by nighttime sleep quality (P for interaction = 0.04). In good-quality sleepers, compared to non-nappers, nappers had significantly higher odds of depressive symptoms, with OR (95% CI) being 1.57 (1.23-2.01), whereas no association was found in poor-quality sleepers (OR = 1.13, 0.94-1.36). CONCLUSION Napping was associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms in older people, and the association was stronger in good-quality sleepers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) frequently suffer from various sleep disturbances. However, how sleep disturbance is associated with AD and its progression remains poorly investigated. We investigated the association of total sleep time with brain amyloid and tau burden, cortical atrophy, cognitive dysfunction, and their longitudinal changes in the AD spectrum. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled participants on the AD spectrum who were positive on 18F-florbetaben (FBB) PET. All participants underwent the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, brain MRI, FBB PET, 18F-flortaucipir (FTP) PET, and detailed neuropsychological testing. In addition, a subset of participants completed follow-up assessments. We analyzed the association of total sleep time with the baseline and longitudinal FBB-standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR), FTP-SUVR, cortical thickness, and cognitive domain composite scores. RESULTS We examined 138 participants on the AD spectrum (15 with preclinical AD, 62 with prodromal AD, and 61 with AD dementia; mean age 73.4 ± 8.0 years; female 58.7%). Total sleep time was longer in the AD dementia group (7.4 ± 1.6 hours) compared with the preclinical (6.5 ± 1.4 hours; p = 0.026) and prodromal groups (6.6 ± 1.4 hours; p = 0.001), whereas other sleep parameters did not differ between groups. Longer total sleep time was not associated with amyloid accumulation but rather with tau accumulation, especially in the amygdala, hippocampus, basal forebrain, insular, cingulate, occipital, inferior temporal cortices, and precuneus. Longer total sleep time predicted faster tau accumulation in Braak regions V-VI (β = 0.016, p = 0.007) and disease progression to mild cognitive impairment or dementia (hazard ratio = 1.554, p = 0.024). Longer total sleep time was also associated with memory deficit (β = -0.19, p = 0.008). DISCUSSION Prolonged total sleep time was associated with tau accumulation in sleep-related cortical and subcortical areas as well as memory dysfunction. It also predicted faster disease progression with tau accumulation. Our study highlights the clinical importance of assessing total sleep time as a marker for disease severity and prognosis in the AD spectrum.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review the literature examining the relationship between sleep and cognition, specifically examining the sub-domain of executive function. We explore the impact of sleep deprivation and the important question of how much sleep is required for optimal cognitive performance. We consider how other sleep metrics, such as sleep quality, may be a more meaningful measure of sleep. We then discuss the putative mechanisms between sleep and cognition followed by their contribution to developing dementia. RECENT FINDINGS Sleep duration and executive function display a quadratic relationship. This suggests an optimal amount of sleep is required for daily cognitive processes. Poor sleep efficiency and sleep fragmentation are linked with poorer executive function and increased risk of dementia during follow-up. Sleep quality may therefore be more important than absolute duration. Biological mechanisms which may underpin the relationship between sleep and cognition include brain structural and functional changes as well as disruption of the glymphatic system. Sleep is an important modifiable lifestyle factor to improve daily cognition and, possibly, reduce the risk of developing dementia. The impact of optimal sleep duration and sleep quality may have important implications for every ageing individual.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Increasing evidence suggests that napping is associated with cognitive impairment and dementia, but the conclusions are inconsistent. Moreover, the extent of the risk is uncertain. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the connection between napping and cognitive impairment. METHODS We performed a systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for studies that were published up to June 2023, and assessed associations between napping and cognitive impairment. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated as the effect sizes for all studies. Heterogeneity and potential publication biases were assessed. RESULTS A total of 4535 papers were retrieved, with 20 reports assessing the relationships between napping and cognitive impairment. Pooled analysis indicated that napping was associated with dementia (OR = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.07-1.21). Importantly, we found that those napping longer than 30, 45, and 60 min/day were 35%, 41%, and 40%, respectively, more likely to have an increased risk of cognitive impairment (30 min: OR = 1.35; 95% CI: 1.24-1.48; 45 min: OR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.27-1.58; 60 min: OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.26-1.56). North America and Europe showed that associations existed between napping and cognitive impairment (North America: OR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.04-1.27; Europe: OR = 1.13; 95% CI: 1.08-1.18). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis indicated associations between long napping durations and cognitive impairment or dementia, suggesting that longer napping might be a potential risk factor of adverse cognitive outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive decline in older adults has become one of the critical challenges to global health. This study aims to examine both cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) (briefed as VD3) concentration and sleep quality/duration, especially their interactions, with risk of cognitive impairment among older adults in China. METHODS We utilized a special subsample of adults aged 65-105 years (individuals = 3412, observations = 4816) from eight provinces in China derived from the 2011/2012 and 2014 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Cognitive impairment was measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination scale. Sleep quality was classified as good versus fair/poor, and sleep duration was classified into short (<7 h), normal (≥7 but <9 h), and long (≥9 h). The VD3 concentration was divided into three levels: deficiency (VD3 < 25 nmol/L), insufficiency (25 nmol/L ≤ VD3 < 50 nmol/L), and sufficiency (VD3 ≥ 50 nmol/L). A wide set of covariates that include demographics, socioeconomic status, family support, health practice, and health conditions was adjusted for robust findings. Multilevel random intercept logit regression models were used to examine the cross-sectional associations between VD3, sleep, and cognitive impairment, whereas logit regression models were applied to investigate the longitudinal associations. RESULTS In the cross-sectional analyses, when all covariates were adjusted, VD3 sufficiency was significantly associated with a 33% lower risk of cognitive impairment compared with VD3 deficiency; good sleep quality was associated with 34% lower odds of cognitive impairment compared with fair/poor sleep quality; sleep hours were not associated with cognitive impairment, although a long sleep duration (≥9 h) was associated with 30% higher odds of being cognitively impaired when baseline health was not controlled. Interaction analyses reveal that VD3 sufficiency could help to additionally reduce the risk of cognitive impairment for good sleep quality and normal sleep hours. In the longitudinal analyses, the association of VD3 sufficiency remains significant, whereas sleep quality and sleep duration were not significant associates. CONCLUSIONS Good sleep quality, normal sleep hours, and VD3 sufficiency are positively associated with good cognitive function. VD3 sufficiency could enhance the associations between sleep and cognitive impairment.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep duration has been shown to associate with cognitive function, but little is known about the short-term effect of sleep duration on the previous night. This study examines how usual sleep duration and previous night's sleep duration are associated with cognitive function in older adults. METHODS The study population consisted of 2949 adults aged 59-92 years (mean 72.6, SD 5.7) derived from three Finnish cohorts. Participants' self-reported usual sleep duration was categorized into short (< 7 h, 19%), mid-range (7- < 9 h, 64%), and long (≥ 9 h, 17%). Self-reported sleep duration on the night prior to cognitive testing was categorized into shorter (59%), same (35%), and longer (5.9%) than usual sleep duration. Computerized Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB®) was used to assess: (1) learning and memory, (2) working memory, (3) information processing, and (4) reaction time. RESULTS Participants with self-reported long, but not short, usual sleep duration had poorer learning and memory (p = .004), information processing (p = .003), and reaction time (p = .006) when compared to those with mid-range sleep duration. Those who slept more than usually the night prior to cognitive testing had poorer information processing (p = .019) than those sleeping the same as usually, while sleeping less than usually was not associated with cognitive function. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that while long sleep duration was associated with worse cognitive function, sleeping more than usually the night prior to cognitive testing was only associated with information processing, and sleeping less than usually is not associated with cognitive function.

Abstract
The relationship between self-reported sleep and cognitive function is complex; it is unclear whether self-reported sleep is a robust correlate of people's cognitive function. We address this gap by using a comprehensive large-scale dataset (N = 1054) coupled with a novel modeling approach, specification curve analysis (SCA), to test the association between self-reported sleep and cognitive function. The results of the SCA showed robust correlations between self-reported sleep and cognitive function, with poorer sleep associated with worse cognitive function. Furthermore, the correlations between sleep components and cognitive function were heterogeneous, with differences emerging across cognitive measures and domains. Specifically, daytime dysfunction was associated with the strongest effect on subjective cognitive function, whereas sleep duration and sleep efficiency had the strongest effect on objective cognitive function. Therefore, the relationship between self-reported sleep and cognition depends largely on what and how cognitive function is measured. Our findings guide measurement and domain selection for future research on the role of sleep in cognitive function.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of sleep disorders on post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) and other factors affecting post-stroke cognitive impairment. Methods A total of 1,542 first-ever stroke inpatients in department of neurology of Tianjin Huanhu Hospital from 2015.6.1 to 2016.12.31. We recorded the personal history of patients. The MMSE (mini-mental state examination), MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment), HAMD (Hamilton Depression Scale), BI (Barthel index), mRS (Modified Rankin Scale), PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), ESS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale), Berlin questionnaire, nocturnal TST (total sleep time) were assessed before discharge. All patients were followed up at 3 months, 6 months, and 4 years (2019-2020) after stroke. During follow-up, the above scales should be evaluated again to assess the sleep status and cognitive function of patients at that time. Results Nocturnal TST (>8 h) (OR 3.540, 95% CI 1.692-7.406, P = 0.001) was a risk factor for cognitive impairment 3 months after stroke. Nocturnal TST (<7 h) (OR 6.504, 95% CI 3.404-12.427, P < 0.001) was a risk factor for cognitive impairment 6 months after stroke. Low sleep quality (OR 2.079, 95% CI 1.177-3.672, P = 0.012), sleepiness (OR 3.988, 95% CI 1.804-8.818, P = 0.001), nocturnal TST (<7 h) (OR 11.334, 95% CI 6.365-20.183, P < 0.001), nocturnal TST (>8 h) (OR 4.096, 95% CI 1.682-9.975, P = 0.002) were risk factors for cognitive impairment 4 years after stroke. The prevalence of cognitive impairment with TIA were 79.3% at admission, 68.1% at 3-months follow-up, 62.1% at 6-months follow-up and 52.2% at 4-year follow-up. Conclusion Long or short nocturnal TST (<7 h or >8 h) was a risk factor for cognitive impairment after stroke (3 months, 6 months and 4 years). Poor sleep quality and sleepiness were shown to be risk factors for cognitive impairment at 4-year follow-up. Cognitive impairment was very common in patients with TIA.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. The APOE-ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset AD. The APOE genotype modulates the effect of sleep disruption on AD risk, suggesting a possible link between apoE and sleep in AD pathogenesis, which is relatively unexplored. We hypothesized that apoE modifies Aβ deposition and Aβ plaque-associated tau seeding and spreading in the form of neuritic plaque-tau (NP-tau) pathology in response to chronic sleep deprivation (SD) in an apoE isoform-dependent fashion. To test this hypothesis, we used APPPS1 mice expressing human APOE-ε3 or -ε4 with or without AD-tau injection. We found that SD in APPPS1 mice significantly increased Aβ deposition and peri-plaque NP-tau pathology in the presence of APOE4 but not APOE3. SD in APPPS1 mice significantly decreased microglial clustering around plaques and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) polarization around blood vessels in the presence of APOE4 but not APOE3. We also found that sleep-deprived APPPS1:E4 mice injected with AD-tau had significantly altered sleep behaviors compared with APPPS1:E3 mice. These findings suggest that the APOE-ε4 genotype is a critical modifier in the development of AD pathology in response to SD.

Abstract
Sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) signals likely encode brain health information that may identify individuals at high risk for age-related brain diseases. Here, we evaluate the correlation of a previously proposed brain age biomarker, the "brain age index" (BAI), with cognitive test scores and use machine learning to develop and validate a series of new sleep EEG-based indices, termed "sleep cognitive indices" (SCIs), that are directly optimized to correlate with specific cognitive scores. Three overarching cognitive processes were examined: total, fluid (a measure of cognitive processes involved in reasoning-based problem solving and susceptible to aging and neuropathology), and crystallized cognition (a measure of cognitive processes involved in applying acquired knowledge toward problem-solving). We show that SCI decoded information about total cognition (Pearson's r = 0.37) and fluid cognition (Pearson's r = 0.56), while BAI correlated only with crystallized cognition (Pearson's r = - 0.25). Overall, these sleep EEG-derived biomarkers may provide accessible and clinically meaningful indicators of neurocognitive health.

Abstract
Exposure to air pollution or lack of physical activity (PA) increases the risk of insomnia. However, evidence on joint exposure to air pollutants is limited, and the interaction of joint air pollutants and PA on insomnia is unknown. This prospective cohort study included 40,315 participants with related data from the UK Biobank, which recruited participants from 2006 to 2010. Insomnia was assessed by self-reported symptoms. The annual average air pollutant concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen oxides (NO2, NOX), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) were calculated based on participants' addresses. We applied a weighted Cox regression model to evaluate the correlation between air pollutants and insomnia and newly proposed an air pollution score to assess joint air pollutants effect using a weighted concentration summation after obtaining the weights of each pollutant in the Weighted-quantile sum regression. With a median follow-up of 8.7 years, 8511 participants developed insomnia. For each 10 μg/m³ increase in NO2, NOX, PM10, SO2, the average hazard ratios (AHRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of insomnia were 1.10 (1.06, 1.14), 1.06 (1.04, 1.08), 1.35 (1.25, 1.45) and 2.58 (2.31, 2.89), respectively; For each 5 μg/m³ increase in PM2.5 and each 1 mg/m³ increase in CO, the corresponding AHRs (95%CI) were 1.27 (1.21, 1.34) and 1.83 (1.10, 3.04), respectively. The AHR (95%CI) for insomnia associated with per interquartile range (IQR) increase in air pollution scores were 1.20 (1.15, 1.23). In addition, potential interactions were examined by setting cross-product terms of air pollution score with PA in the models. We observed an interaction between air pollution scores and PA (P = 0.032). The associations between joint air pollutants and insomnia were attenuated among participants with higher PA. Our study provides evidence on developing strategies for improving healthy sleep by promoting PA and reducing air pollution.

Abstract
Although some studies have shown the association between sleep duration and cognitive impairment is positive, the mechanism explaining how sleep duration is linked to cognition remains poor understood. The current study aims to explore it among Chinese population. A cross-sectional study of 12,589 participants aged 45 or over was conducted, cognition was assessed by three measures to capture mental intactness, episodic memory, and visuospatial abilities. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale 10 (CES-D10) was administered during the face-to-face survey to assess depressive status. Sleep duration was reported by the participants themselves. Partial correlation and linear regression were used to explore the association between sleep duration, cognition, and depression. The Bootstrap methods PROCESS program was used to detect the mediation effect of depression. Sleep duration was positively correlated with cognition and negatively with depression (p < 0.01). The CES-D10 score (r = - 0.13, p < 0.01) was negatively correlated with cognitive function. Linear regression analysis showed sleep duration was positively associated with cognition (p = 0.001). When depressive symptoms were considered, the association between sleep duration and cognition lost significance (p = 0.468). Depressive symptoms have mediated the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive function. The findings revealed that the relationship between sleep duration and cognition is mainly explained by depressive symptoms and may provide new ideas for interventions for cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
The restorative function of sleep is shaped by its duration, timing, continuity, subjective quality, and efficiency. Current sleep recommendations specify only nocturnal duration and have been largely derived from sleep self-reports that can be imprecise and miss relevant details. Sleep duration, preferred timing, and ability to withstand sleep deprivation are heritable traits whose expression may change with age and affect the optimal sleep prescription for an individual. Prevailing societal norms and circumstances related to work and relationships interact to influence sleep opportunity and quality. The value of allocating time for sleep is revealed by the impact of its restriction on behavior, functional brain imaging, sleep macrostructure, and late-life cognition. Augmentation of sleep slow oscillations and spindles have been proposed for enhancing sleep quality, but they inconsistently achieve their goal. Crafting bespoke sleep recommendations could benefit from large-scale, longitudinal collection of objective sleep data integrated with behavioral and self-reported data.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep duration and difficulties have been shown to associate with cognitive function. This study examined how changes in sleep and in cognitive function are associated during retirement transition. METHODS The study population consisted of 2980 Whitehall II study participants, who retired during the follow-up, whose sleep was queried, and cognitive function measured (inductive reasoning and verbal memory) before and after retirement (follow-up 16 years). Using the last information on sleep before and the first after retirement, participants were categorized into constantly without (59%), increasing (13%), decreasing (11%), and constantly with (18%) sleep difficulties; and constantly short (26%), increasing (19%), decreasing (8.5%), and constantly mid-range (47%) sleep duration. Change in cognitive function during retirement transition was examined by sleep change groups using linear regression analyses with generalized estimating equations. RESULTS More pronounced decline in inductive reasoning during retirement transition was observed among participants with increasing sleep difficulties (-1.96, 95% CI -2.52 to -1.41) compared to those constantly without sleep difficulties (-1.25, 95% CI -1.52 to -0.98) and constantly with sleep difficulties (-1.26, 95% CI -1.75 to -0.92). Decreasing sleep difficulties (-0.64, 95% CI -0.86 to -0.43) were associated with a more pronounced decline in verbal memory when compared to constantly without sleep difficulties (-0.42, 95% CI -0.52 to -0.32) in post-retirement period. No statistically significant differences across sleep duration groups in cognitive function were observed. CONCLUSIONS Increasing and decreasing sleep difficulties may be associated with accelerated decline in cognitive function during retirement transition and post-retirement.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE Evidence regarding the association of short sleep duration and napping with stroke remains limited and controversial. We examined the association of sleep duration and napping with risk of stroke mortality in an older Chinese cohort. METHODS Sleep duration and daytime napping were assessed by face-to-face interview during 2003-2008. Information of causes of death until April 30, 2021 was collected via record linkage with the Death Registry. Cox regression was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Of 27,254 participants aged average 62.0 (standard deviation = 7.1) years, 818 stroke deaths occurred within 388,798 person-years (mean = 14.3 years) of follow-up. A U-shaped relation between sleep duration and risk of stroke mortality was observed. Participants with short (≤5 h/day) or long sleep duration (≥9 h/day) showed higher risks of total stroke mortality, with adjusted HRs (95% CIs) being 1.27 (1.01-1.59) and 1.37 (1.07-1.75), respectively. However, non-significant association of short or long sleep duration with hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke mortality was found. The associations of short and long sleep duration with total stroke mortality were more pronounced in those with hypertension (P for interaction with hypertension = 0.01), with HRs (95% CIs) being 1.37 (1.04-1.82) and 1.77 (1.33-2.36), respectively. No association between napping and risk of stroke mortality was found. CONCLUSIONS Both short and long sleep duration, but not daytime napping, were associated with higher risk of stroke mortality. Public health messages to encourage good sleep hygiene may be important, especially for people with hypertension.

Abstract
A growing body of evidence indicates that napping is common among older adults. However, a systematic review on the effect of napping on the elderly is lacking. The aim of this systematic review was to (i) determine how studies evaluated napping behavior in older adults (frequency, duration and timing); (ii) explore how napping impacts perceptual measures, cognitive and psychomotor performance, night-time sleep and physiological parameters in the elderly (PROSPERO CRD42022299805). A total of 738 records were screened by two researchers using the PICOS criteria. Fifteen studies met our inclusion criteria with a mean age ranging from 60.8 to 78.3 years and a cumulative sample size of n = 326. Daytime napping had an overall positive impact on subjective measures (i.e., sleepiness and fatigue), psychomotor performances (i.e., speed and accuracy) and learning abilities (i.e., declarative and motor learning). Additionally, studies showed (i) consistency between nap and control conditions regarding sleep duration, efficiency and latency, and proportion of sleep stages, and (ii) increase of 24 h sleep duration with nap compared to control condition. Based on the findings of the present review, there is minimal evidence to indicate that napping is detrimental for older adults' nighttime sleep. Future studies should consider involving repeated naps during a micro-cycle in order to investigate the chronic effect of napping on older adults. Abstract
While prior research has demonstrated a relationship between sleep and cognitive performance, how sleep relates to underlying genetic and environmental etiologies contributing to cognitive functioning, regardless of the level of cognitive function, is unclear. The present study assessed whether the importance of genetic and environmental contributions to cognition vary depending on an individual's aging-related sleep characteristics. The large sample consisted of twins from six studies within the Interplay of Genes and Environment across Multiple Studies (IGEMS) consortium spanning mid- to late-life (Average age [Mage] = 57.6, range = 27-91 years, N = 7052, Female = 43.70%, 1525 complete monozygotic [MZ] pairs, 2001 complete dizygotic [DZ] pairs). Quantitative genetic twin models considered sleep duration as a primary moderator of genetic and environmental contributions to cognitive performance in four cognitive abilities (Semantic Fluency, Spatial-Visual Reasoning, Processing Speed, and Episodic Memory), while accounting for age moderation. Results suggested genetic and both shared and nonshared environmental contributions for Semantic Fluency and genetic and shared environmental contributions for Episodic Memory vary by sleep duration, while no significant moderation was observed for Spatial-Visual Reasoning or Processing Speed. Results for Semantic Fluency and Episodic Memory illustrated patterns of higher genetic influences on cognitive function at shorter sleep durations (i.e. 4 hours) and higher shared environmental contributions to cognitive function at longer sleep durations (i.e. 10 hours). Overall, these findings may align with associations of upregulation of neuroinflammatory processes and ineffective beta-amyloid clearance in short sleep contexts and common reporting of mental fatigue in long sleep contexts, both associated with poorer cognitive functioning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No clear evidence is available for the influence of napping on cognitive function in older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to elucidate the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between napping and cognitive function (global cognition and memory) and to explore whether some individual characteristics and sleep characteristics can modify this relationship. METHODS We systematically searched Medline (via PubMed), Web of Science, and Scopus. DerSimonian and Lair and Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman random effects methods were used to compute pooled estimates of odds ratios (ORs) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the association of global cognition and memory with napping. The mean age, the night sleep time (hours), and the percentage of women, no nappers, and people in the less night-time sleep duration category were used for meta-regressions. RESULTS Twenty-five studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, 18 cross-sectional and seven longitudinal studies, including 95,719 participants older than 60 years. The pooled ORs from the cross-sectional analyses were 1.03 (95% CI: 1.01 to 1.06) for global cognition and 1.06 (95%: 0.90 to 1.26) for memory. The pooled ORs from the longitudinal analyses were 1.00 (95% 0.85 to 1.18) for global cognition and 1.08 (95% 0.98 to 1.19) for memory. These associations were not modified by individual or sleep characteristics. CONCLUSION Our data confirm the absence of association between napping and global cognition and memory regardless of the characteristics of the population. This information might be considered when providing lifestyle recommendations to adults with and without cognitive complaints.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the linear and nonlinear associations between sleep duration and gait speed and the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in community-dwelling older adults. Participants were 233 older adults who met the study inclusion criteria. The MCI diagnosis was based on medical evaluations through a clinical interview conducted by a dementia specialist. Self-reported sleep duration was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The usual gait speed was calculated from the time taken to walk along a 4 m walkway. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of developing MCI in relation to sleep duration and gait speed. Generalized additive models were used to examine the dose−response relationships between sleep duration, gait speed, and the risk of developing MCI. Slower gait speed (OR: 1.84, 95%; CI: 1.00−3.13) and poor sleep duration (OR: 1.76, 95%; CI: 1.00−3.35) were associated with the risk of developing MCI, compared with their optimal status. In addition, the combination of poor sleep and slower gait was associated with a higher risk of developing MCI than optimal sleep duration and gait speed (OR: 3.13, 95%; CI: 1.93−5.14). Furthermore, gait speed and sleep duration were non-linearly associated with the risk of developing MCI. These results highlight the complex interplay and synergism between sleep duration and gait abilities on the risk of developing MCI in older adults. In addition, our results suggest that slower gait speed (<1.0 m/s) and short (<330 min) and long (>480 min) sleep duration may be linked to MCI risks through underlying pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The World Alzheimer Report showed that 46.8 million people suffered from dementia in 2015. This study examined how the duration and quality of sleep are associated with cognition among older adults in China. METHOD Data were drawn from waves 2011, 2013, and 2015 of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including noninstitutionalized adults aged 45 and older (n=10,768). Cognition was measured by interview-based assessments of mental status (TICS-10), episodic memory, and visuospatial abilities. Sleep duration was categorized as long, medium, or short and sleep quality was categorized as good, fair, or poor. RESULTS Sleep duration had an inverted U-shape relationship with cognitive scores (P <.001); and sleep quality had a positive linear relationship with cognitive scores (P <.001). Short and long sleep durations were associated with consistently lower cognition scores with increasing age (both P <.001); and fair and poor quality of sleep were associated with consistently lower levels of cognition (both P <.001). Tests of interactions between sleep duration and sleep quality showed that participants reporting long durations of sleep with poor quality of sleep had the lowest overall cognitive scores. LIMITATIONS Self-reported methods were used to measure sleep quality and duration and thus our findings underscore the need for more evidence-based research to improve prevention efforts and tailor interventions to reduce cognitive decline among Chinese older adults. CONCLUSIONS Suboptimal sleep duration and quality were associated with poor cognition. Cognitive scores were lowest among those who reported long durations of sleep that were of poor quality.

Abstract
Sleep is essential for life, including daily cognitive processes, yet the amount of sleep required for optimal brain health as we grow older is unclear. Poor memory and increased risk of dementia is associated with the extremes of sleep quantity and disruption of other sleep characteristics. We examined sleep and cognitive data from the UK Biobank (N = 479,420) in middle-to-late life healthy individuals (age 38-73 years) and the relationship with brain structure in a sub-group (N = 37,553). Seven hours of sleep per day was associated with the highest cognitive performance which decreased for every hour below and above this sleep duration. This quadratic relationship remained present in older individuals (>60 years, N = 212,006). Individuals who sleep between six-to-eight hours had significantly greater grey matter volume in 46 of 139 different brain regions including the orbitofrontal cortex, hippocampi, precentral gyrus, right frontal pole and cerebellar subfields. Several brain regions showed a quadratic relationship between sleep duration and volume while other regions were smaller only in individuals who slept longer. These findings highlight the important relationship between the modifiable lifestyle factor of sleep duration and cognition as well as a widespread association between sleep and structural brain health.

Abstract
Background To explore the prevalence and inequality of cognitive impairment among older adults in Macau and the contributions of influencing factors to inequality in cognitive impairment. Methods The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to measure the prevalence of cognitive impairment. Socioeconomic status scores were used to describe economic level of the subjects. The concentration index was applied to measure the inequality of cognitive impairment associated with socioeconomic status (SES) and decomposed into its influencing factors. Results The prevalence of cognitive impairment was 44.35% in Macau. The concentration index of cognitive impairment among the elderly was −0.165 (95% CI: −0.232 to −0.098), indicating that the prevalence of cognitive impairment was concentrated in households with poor SES. Older age, poor SES, long or short sleep duration, other marital status, poor appetite, no tea/coffee drinking, no religious belief, and depression contributed positively to the inequality of cognitive impairment. Among these factors, SES made the largest contribution to inequality, accounting for 76.74%. Conclusion In Macau, the prevalence of cognitive impairment among people aged 65 years and older is concentrated among those who are in poor economic conditions. Reducing the gap between the rich and the poor at the source, increasing educational level of low SES population and improving their access to healthcare services will help to improve the inequity of cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Aim The effect of sleep duration on cognitive function has been reported. However, the studies about the combined effects of total sleep duration and midday napping on cognition in elders were limited and inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the associations between total sleep duration, midday napping and cognitive function among middle-aged and older Chinese adults. Methods Based on the 3rd wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2015, a total of 9218 participants aged ≥45 years with completed cognition measurements were included. Cognitive functions were assessed by a combined global cognition score of episodic memory and mental status. Information about sleep-related variables, demographic characteristics, and health status were collected by validated questionnaires. Multivariate linear regression models were performed to evaluate the associations between total sleep duration, midday napping, and cognitive function. Stratified analyses were used to explore the potential effect modifier. Results Overall, the global cognition score was 10.38 ± 4.30 among the participants (mean age: 61.5 ± 8.7 years). For sleep duration, both short sleep and long sleep duration were significantly associated with the increased risk of cognitive impairment after controlling for demographics and other confounders. Compared with sleeping for 7h per day, the adjusted β-coefficient and 95% CI of the risk of cognitive impairment was −0.967 (95% CIs: −1.191, −0.742) for ≤5h, −0.257 (−0.498, −0.016) for 6h, −0.424 (−0.650, −0.198) for 8h and −0.664 (−0.876, −0.452) for ≥9h. The combined effect analysis indicated that subjects with extended or without naps had a significantly higher risk of cognitive impairment in the ≤5h sleep time group (ref: 7h) and in extended nappers or without naps group (ref: short nappers). Subjects with extended naps or without naps might increase the risk of cognitive impairment, especially those having ≤5h total sleep time. Stratified analysis showed that participants aged ≥60 years without social activity increased the risk of cognitive decline. Conclusion An inverted U-shaped association was observed between total sleep duration and cognitive function in Chinese elders, especially in those aged ≥60 years or without social activity. Short midday naps could mitigate the deleterious effects of poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration on cognitive function. The findings could help us identify the vulnerable population and decrease the burden of cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Background: Sleep is increasingly recognized as an important lifestyle contributor to health; however, its relationship with Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is still unclear. The present study aimed to examine the associations between sleep duration, sleep quality, and MCR among community-dwelling Chinese older adults. Methods: We recruited 5,387 participants aged ≥60 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Sleep-related variables including night sleep duration and sleep quality were assessed via self-reported questionnaires. MCR syndrome was defined as cognitive complaints and slow gait speed without dementia or impaired mobility. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the associations between sleep-related variables and MCR after controlling for all potential confounders including demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities. Results: We found that sleep duration was significantly associated with MCR, and the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (OR) were highest for those with the shortest (<6 h OR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.18–2.04) and longest (≥10 h OR = 1.73, 95% CI = 1.03–2.91) sleep durations. Moreover, an increasing frequency of self-perceived poor sleep quality was significantly associated with MCR in the adjusted model (3–4 days OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.16–2.17; 5–7 days OR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.37–2.40). Conclusions: Our study indicated an inverted U-shaped association between night sleep duration and MCR. Poor sleep quality was also associated with higher odds of MCR in community-dwelling Chinese elders. Longitudinal studies with a larger population size are needed to establish causality in the future and further explore potential action mechanisms.

Abstract
Sleep monitoring may provide markers for future Alzheimer's disease; however, the relationship between sleep and cognitive function in preclinical and early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease is not well understood. Multiple studies have associated short and long sleep times with future cognitive impairment. Since sleep and the risk of Alzheimer's disease change with age, a greater understanding of how the relationship between sleep and cognition changes over time is needed. In this study, we hypothesized that longitudinal changes in cognitive function will have a non-linear relationship with total sleep time, time spent in non-REM and REM sleep, sleep efficiency and non-REM slow wave activity. To test this hypothesis, we monitored sleep-wake activity over 4-6 nights in 100 participants who underwent standardized cognitive testing longitudinally, APOE genotyping, and measurement of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers, total tau and amyloid-β42 in the CSF. To assess cognitive function, individuals completed a neuropsychological testing battery at each clinical visit that included the Free and Cued Selective Reminding test, the Logical Memory Delayed Recall assessment, the Digit Symbol Substitution test and the Mini-Mental State Examination. Performance on each of these four tests was Z-scored within the cohort and averaged to calculate a preclinical Alzheimer cognitive composite score. We estimated the effect of cross-sectional sleep parameters on longitudinal cognitive performance using generalized additive mixed effects models. Generalized additive models allow for non-parametric and non-linear model fitting and are simply generalized linear mixed effects models; however, the linear predictors are not constant values but rather a sum of spline fits. We found that longitudinal changes in cognitive function measured by the cognitive composite decreased at low and high values of total sleep time (P < 0.001), time in non-REM (P < 0.001) and REM sleep (P < 0.001), sleep efficiency (P < 0.01) and <1 Hz and 1-4.5 Hz non-REM slow wave activity (P < 0.001) even after adjusting for age, CSF total tau/amyloid-β42 ratio, APOE ε4 carrier status, years of education and sex. Cognitive function was stable over time within a middle range of total sleep time, time in non-REM and REM sleep and <1 Hz slow wave activity, suggesting that certain levels of sleep are important for maintaining cognitive function. Although longitudinal and interventional studies are needed, diagnosing and treating sleep disturbances to optimize sleep time and slow wave activity may have a stabilizing effect on cognition in preclinical or early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The associations between sleep characteristics and cognition are complicated. Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathologies have been proven to be associated with sleep characteristics. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the associations between sleep characteristics and cognitive function and examine the roles of AD pathologies in modulating the association of sleep duration with cognition. METHODS A total of 974 participants who had measurements of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid-β (Aβ), phosphorylated tau (P-tau), total tau proteins (T-tau), cognitive function, and sleep characteristics were included from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and Lifestyle (CABLE) study. Linear regression analyses were utilized to explore the associations of sleep characteristics with cognition. Non-linear regression analyses were utilized to explore the associations of sleep habits with cognition. Causal mediation analyses were conducted to explore the mediation effects of AD pathologies on cognition. RESULTS The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) total score was significantly negatively correlated with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score (p = 0.0176). Long latency (p = 0.0054) and low efficiency (p = 0.0273) were associated with cognitive impairment. Habitual nap behavior was associated with lower MoCA scores (p = 0.0045). U-shaped associations were observed between sleep habits (bedtime and nocturnal sleep duration) and cognition. A causal mediation analysis indicated that P-tau/Aβ42 mediated the association of sleep duration with cognition. CONCLUSION These findings showed sleep characteristics were associated with cognitive functions. Sleep habits (duration, bedtime) had U-shaped associations with cognition. AD core pathologies might partially mediate the influence of sleep duration on cognitive impairments.

Abstract
PURPOSE To collect existing evidence on the relationship between sleep duration and health outcomes. METHODS A thorough search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from inception to January, 2021. Meta-analyses of observational and interventional studies were eligible if they examined the associations between sleep duration and human health. RESULTS In total, this umbrella review identified 69 meta-analyses with 11 outcomes for cancers and 30 outcomes for non-cancer conditions. Inappropriate sleep durations may significantly elevate the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), cognitive decline, coronary heart disease (CHD), depression, falls, frailty, lung cancer, metabolic syndrome (MS), and stroke. Dose-response analysis revealed that a 1-h reduction per 24 hours is associated with an increased risk by 3-11% of all-cause mortality, CHD, osteoporosis, stroke, and T2DM among short sleepers. Conversely, a 1-h increment in long sleepers is associated with a 7-17% higher risk of stroke mortality, CHD, stroke, and T2DM in adults. CONCLUSION Inappropriate sleep duration is a risk factor for developing non-cancer conditions. Decreasing and increasing sleep hours towards extreme sleep durations are associated with poor health outcomes.

Abstract
Sleep is being emphasized as a factor that improves mental health and quality of life. Here, we aimed to investigate the association between the quality and duration of sleep and subjective cognitive decline in the Korean population. We used the 2018 Korean Community Health Survey data that are nationwide representative data collected by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sleep quality was measured using the Korean version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The study population comprised 206,719 individuals aged 19 years and over. We used multiple logistic regression for the analysis. Individuals of both sexes with poor sleep quality were more likely to experience subjective cognitive decline compared with the reference group (good sleep quality) (men, odds ratio (OR) = 1.97 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.86-2.09]; women, OR = 1.75 [95% CI 1.67-1.84]). U-shape associations were found between sleep duration and subjective cognitive decline. Additionally, the presence of depressive symptom or stress and health-related behaviors, including smoking, drinking, and not walking, were high-risk factors for subjective cognitive decline. Our results indicate that poor sleep quality might contribute to subjective cognitive decline in the Korean population. We suggest the implementation of intervention measures for poor sleep behaviors to prevent cognitive decline.

Abstract
Disturbances of the sleep/wake cycle in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are common, frequently precede cognitive decline, and tend to worsen with disease progression. Sleep is critical to the maintenance of homeostatic and circadian function, and chronic sleep disturbances have significant cognitive and physical health consequences that likely exacerbate disease severity. Sleep-wake cycles are regulated by neuromodulatory centers located in the brainstem, the hypothalamus, and the basal forebrain, many of which are vulnerable to the accumulation of abnormal protein deposits associated with neurodegenerative conditions. In AD, while sleep disturbances are commonly attributed to the accumulation of amyloid beta, patients often first experience sleep issues prior to the appearance of amyloid beta plaques, on a timeline that more closely corresponds to the first appearance of abnormal tau neurofibrillary tangles in sleep/wake regulating areas of the brainstem. Sleep disturbances also occur in pure tauopathies, providing further support that tau is a major contributor. Here, we provide an overview of the neuroanatomy of sleep/wake centers discovered in animal models, and review the evidence that tau-driven neuropathology is a primary driver of sleep disturbance in AD.

Abstract
Background: Physical activity and sleep quality are both major factors for improving one's health. Knowledge on the interactions of sleep quality and the amount of physical activity may be helpful for implementing multimodal health interventions in older adults. Methods: This preliminary cross-sectional study is based on 64 participants [82.1 ± 6.4 years (MD ± SD); 22 male: 42 female]. The amount of physical activity was assessed by means of an accelerometer (MyWellness Key). Self-reported sleep parameters were obtained using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The Barthel Index was used for physical disability rating. Bivariate correlations (Spearman's Rho) were used to explore relationships between the amount of physical activity and sleep quality. To analyse differences between categorial subgroups univariate ANOVAs were applied; in cases of significance, these were followed by Tukey-HSD post-hoc analyses. Results: No linear association between physical activity and sleep quality was found (r = 0.119; p > 0.05). In subgroup analyses (n = 41, Barthel Index ≥90 pts, free of pre-existing conditions), physical activity levels differed significantly between groups of different sleep duration (≥7 h; ≥6 to <7 h; ≥5 to <6 h; <5h; p = 0.037). Conclusion: There is no general association between higher activity levels and better sleep quality in the investigated cohort. However, a sleep duration of ≥5 to <6 h, corresponding to 7.6 h bed rest time, was associated with a higher level of physical activity.

Abstract
As a symptomatic predementia stage with progressive cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is common with aging. How changes in self-reported sleep duration affect MCI risk in the older adults remains unclear. Participants aged ≥ 65 years and enrolled at least two waves in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey were included in present longitudinal study. Changes in sleep duration were calculated as the difference between two waves and categorized into five groups: decreased >2 h, decreased 0-2h, stable, increased 0-2 h, and increased >2 h. MCI was measured by the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination. Generalized estimating equation model and restricted cubic spline function was applied to investigate the association. Among 9,005 participants (mean age, 81.19 years; 4,391 male), 2,877 developed MCI. Comparing with individuals with stable sleep duration, MCI risk [odds ratio (95% confidence intervals)] was: 1.15 (0.99-1.34) for decreased >2 h, 0.99 (0.87-1.13) for decreased 0-2h, 1.09 (0.95-1.24) for increased 0-2 h, and 1.57 (1.36-1.81) for increased >2 h, respectively. Similar patterns were observed among subgroup analyses by sex, age, and sleep quality at baseline. For participants with long sleep duration at baseline (>8h), further increased >2 h was associated with higher MCI risk [2.23 (1.55-3.21)]. Either in the whole or subgroup population, a U-shaped association was observed (Pnon-linearity<0.05). In conclusion, changes in self-reported sleep duration were associated with MCI risk in a U-shaped pattern. Strategies that shifting sleep duration into normal range and keeping it stable are essential to prevent MCI in clinical practice.

Abstract
Background Studies have found that social capital (SC) is associated with the risk of cognitive decline; however, the mechanism explaining how SC leads to cognitive decline is unclear. The current study examines the mediation effect of sleep duration on the relationship between SC and cognitive decline in Chinese older adults. Methods A cross-sectional study of 955 community-dwelling aged 60 or over was conducted. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE), self-report sleep duration questionnaire, and social capital scales were administered during the face-to-face survey. The Bootstrap methods PROCESS program is employed to test the mediation model. Results After controlling for covariates, both social cohesion and social interaction were positively correlated with the MMSE score (p<0.001), and social cohesion was negatively correlated with sleep duration (p = 0.009); On the contrary, sleep duration was negatively correlated with MMSE score (p<0.001). Linear regression analysis showed social cohesion was positively associated with the MMSE score (β = 0.16, p = 0.005), while sleep duration was associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline (β = -0.72, p<0.001). Sleep duration has mediated the relationship between social cohesion and cognitive decline (explaining 21.7% of the total variance). Conclusions Social capital negatively associated with the risk of cognitive decline in this Chinese population, and sleep duration may partly explain this relationship. It may be a suggestive clue to identify those at a higher risk of progressing to cognitive impairment. Further prospective study in need to confirm this finding due to the cross-sectional design.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor glycemic control is associated with chronic life-threatening complications. Several studies have revealed that sleep status is associated with glycemic control. AIM to examine the association between sleep duration, quality and glycemic control among adults with diabetes. METHODS Data on 2500 participants aged 18-60 years were collected from the Qatar Biobank (QBB). Sleep duration and quality were assessed by a self-completed health and lifestyle questionnaire, and glycemic control was assessed using HbA1c. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between sleep duration, napping, snoring and poor glycemic control. RESULTS After adjusting for age and gender, sleep duration was not associated with poor glycemic control. Lack of association persisted after controlling for smoking, physical activity, education, BMI, fruit and vegetable intake, insulin and medication use. However, sleeping for long hours at night (≥8 h) had a trend in increasing the risk of poor glycemic control (OR = 1.28; 95% CI: 0.94-1.74). Napping was positively associated with poor glycemic control. After adjusting for age and gender, patients who reported "sometimes, frequently, or always" napping had more than 30% increased risk of poor control as compared to patients who reported "never/rarely" napping. Snoring was not associated with poor glycemic control among the study sample when adjusted for age and gender (p = 0.61). Other factors were found to be associated with a better glycemic control such as female, high educational and high physical activity level. CONCLUSIONS our results suggest that napping may be an independent risk factor for a poor glycemic control in diabetes; further investigations are required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep plays a key role in preserving cognitive function. However, the optimal strategies of sleep for cognition and the underlying mechanism are not well-established. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), 2011-2012 survey. Self-reported nighttime sleep and afternoon napping data were collected. Fasting blood collected was analyzed for the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell. RESULTS Both nighttime sleep and afternoon napping were significantly associated with cognition after adjusting for confounders (p < 0.05). Precisely, participants with nighttime sleep of 6.1-7h had the highest cognition scores (p < 0.05). Participants with less than 30 min afternoon napping had the highest cognition scores (p < 0.05). The synergistic effect of nighttime sleep and afternoon napping was not significant (p > 0.05). Nighttime sleep and afternoon napping were significantly related to the white blood cell, but not the high-sensitivity CRP. The white blood cell mediated the association between sleep and cognition (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Nighttime sleep of six to seven hours and afternoon napping of less than 30 minutes are associated with optimal cognitive function in middle-aged and older people, respectively. Sleep influences cognition partly via the inflammatory profile.

Abstract
Hormone therapy improves sleep in menopausal women and recent data suggest that transdermal 17β-estradiol may reduce the accumulation of cortical amyloid-β. However, how menopausal hormone therapies modify the associations of amyloid-β accumulation with sleep quality is not known. In this study, associations of sleep quality with cortical amyloid-β deposition and cognitive function were assessed in a subset of women who had participated in the Kronos early estrogen prevention study. It was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in which recently menopausal women (age, 42-58; 5-36 months past menopause) were randomized to (1) oral conjugated equine estrogen (n = 19); (2) transdermal 17β-estradiol (tE2, n = 21); (3) placebo pills and patch (n = 32) for 4 years. Global sleep quality score was calculated using Pittsburgh sleep quality index, cortical amyloid-β deposition was measured with Pittsburgh compound-B positron emission tomography standard uptake value ratio and cognitive function was assessed in four cognitive domains 3 years after completion of trial treatments. Lower global sleep quality score (i.e., better sleep quality) correlated with lower cortical Pittsburgh compound-B standard uptake value ratio only in the tE2 group (r = 0.45, P = 0.047). Better global sleep quality also correlated with higher visual attention and executive function scores in the tE2 group (r = -0.54, P = 0.02) and in the oral conjugated equine estrogen group (r = -0.65, P = 0.005). Menopausal hormone therapies may influence the effects of sleep on cognitive function, specifically, visual attention and executive function. There also appears to be a complex relationship between sleep, menopausal hormone therapies, cortical amyloid-β accumulation and cognitive function, and tE2 formulation may modify the relationship between sleep and amyloid-β accumulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive daytime sleepiness is associated with chronic disorders of aging and mortality. Because longitudinal data are limited on the development of sleep disturbances and cognitive changes in older adults, we investigated the demographic, clinical, and cognitive predictors of self-reported daytime sleepiness over a period of 10 years. METHODS We jointly modeled latent trajectories over time of sleepiness, cognitive domains, and informative attrition and then fit models to identify cognitive trajectories and baseline characteristics that predicted the trajectories of sleepiness. RESULTS Three latent trajectory groups were identified: emerging sleepiness, persistent sleepiness, and consistently low daytime sleepiness accounting for attrition in all groups. Compared with low sleepiness, emerging sleepiness was significantly associated with declining attention and subjective memory complaints; persistent sleepiness was associated with lower baseline scores in all cognitive domains, declining language trajectory, and more subjective memory complaints. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that persistent sleepiness and emerging daytime sleepiness are associated with cognitive decline and multiple morbidities, albeit more subtly in emerging daytime sleepiness. Furthermore, these data suggest that change in the cognitive domain of attention and subjective memory complaints may be early indicators of future sleep disturbance.

The mediating role of cognition in the relationship between sleep duration and instrumental activities of daily living disability among middle-aged and older Chinese. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of sleep duration at baseline on the incident IADL disability among middle-aged and older Chinese, and test whether cognition mediates this causality. METHODS Data were collected from wave 1 (2011-2012) to wave 3 (2015-2016) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Sleep duration was self-reported at baseline. Cognitive function, including episodic memory and mental intactness were measured via a questionnaire. IADL was assessed at baseline and follow-up. Baron and Kenny's causal steps and Karlson/Holm/Breen (KHB) method were conducted to examine the mediating effect. RESULTS A total of 10,328 participants free of IADL disability at baseline were included in this study. Over 4 years of follow-up, 17.1% of participants developed IADL disability. Compared to 7-8 h sleep duration, both short sleep (OR=1.460; 95% CI: 1.261-1.690 for sleeping ≤5 h; OR= 1.189; 95% CI: 1.011-1.400 for sleeping 5-7 h) and long sleep (OR=1.703; 95% CI: 1.269-2.286 for sleeping >9 h) were linked with incident IADL disability. KHB method identified significant mediating effect of cognition on the relationship between extreme sleep durations (≤5 h or >9 h) and IADL disability and the proportional mediation through cognition was 21.32% and 21.06% for sleeping ≤5 h and >9 h, respectively. CONCLUSION Both short (sleeping ≤5 h) and long sleep duration (sleeping >9 h) predicted incident IADL disability. Cognition partially mediated the effect of extreme sleep durations on IADL disability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disturbed sleep and activity are prominent features of bipolar disorder type I (BP-I). However, the relationship of sleep and activity characteristics to brain structure and behavior in euthymic BP-I patients and their non-BP-I relatives is unknown. Additionally, underlying genetic relationships between these traits have not been investigated. METHODS Relationships between sleep and activity phenotypes, assessed using actigraphy, with structural neuroimaging (brain) and cognitive and temperament (behavior) phenotypes were investigated in 558 euthymic individuals from multi-generational pedigrees including at least one member with BP-I. Genetic correlations between actigraphy-brain and actigraphy-behavior associations were assessed, and bivariate linkage analysis was conducted for trait pairs with evidence of shared genetic influences. RESULTS More physical activity and longer awake time were significantly associated with increased brain volumes and cortical thickness, better performance on neurocognitive measures of long-term memory and executive function, and less extreme scores on measures of temperament (impulsivity, cyclothymia). These associations did not differ between BP-I patients and their non-BP-I relatives. For nine activity-brain or activity-behavior pairs there was evidence for shared genetic influence (genetic correlations); of these pairs, a suggestive bivariate quantitative trait locus on chromosome 7 for wake duration and verbal working memory was identified. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that increased physical activity and more adequate sleep are associated with increased brain size, better cognitive function and more stable temperament in BP-I patients and their non-BP-I relatives. Additionally, we found evidence for pleiotropy of several actigraphy-behavior and actigraphy-brain phenotypes, suggesting a shared genetic basis for these traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment are common and related in the elderly population worldwide. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between sleep disturbance and motoric cognitive risk (MCR) syndrome, which is characterized by subjective cognitive complaints and objective slow gait in older individuals without dementia or any mobility disability in the community-dwelling elderly Chinese population. METHODS We recruited 940 participants aged ≥65 years from November 2016 to March 2017 in the Ningbo Community Study on Aging (NCSA). Self-reported sleep duration and sleep-quality variables, comprehensive geriatric evaluation, as well as indicators for diagnosing MCR syndrome were evaluated in this cross-sectional study. RESULTS Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that a 1-SD increase in night (1.1 h) and 24-h sleep duration (1.3 h) was associated, respectively, with a 21% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1%-47%; p = 0.04) and 30% (95% CI, 3%-64%; p = 0.03) higher odds of having MCR syndrome. Considering sleep duration as a categorical variable, longer night-sleep duration (>8.5 h) was associated with MCR syndrome (OR, 2.03; p = 0.02) compared to shorter night-sleep duration (<8 h). For sleep-quality factors, increasing frequency of trouble falling asleep, waking early or easily, nightmares, and taking sleep drugs were significantly associated with MCR syndrome after adjusting for potential covariables (all p for trend < 0.05), but not for self-perceived sleep quality (p for trend = 0.10). CONCLUSIONS Long sleep duration, poor sleep quality, and taking sleep drugs were associated with higher odds of having MCR syndrome in the community-dwelling elderly Chinese population. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Approximately 30-50% of persons living with HIV manifest some degree of neurocognitive impairment. Even mild-to-moderate forms of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) can result in difficulties with everyday functioning, such as suboptimal medication adherence and impaired driving. Despite the pervasive presence and consequences of HAND, there is a significant unmet need to develop effective behavioral strategies to reduce the incidence and consequences of HAND. Although there is an absence of evidence-based behavioral interventions specific to HAND, the literature reviewed in this chapter suggest the following modifiable lifestyle factors as intervention targets: physical activity, diet, sleep, and antiretroviral medication adherence. Adoption and maintenance of these healthy lifestyle factors may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which, in turn, may reduce the incidence and/or severity of HAND.

Abstract
Background: Rapid eye movement sleep deprivation (REMSD) and fluoxetine affect depression, yet the detailed molecular mechanisms were not clear. Methods: Rat depression chronic unpredictable stress was constructed, and the body weight of rats was measured. The efficacy of REMSD and fluoxetine on the pleasure experience, exploration, and cognition of rats with depression was determined by the Sucrose preference test, the open field test, and Morris water task, respectively. The effects of REMSD and fluoxetine on depression-induced damage and apoptosis in rat hippocampi were detected using hematoxylin-eosin staining and terminal transferase-mediated biotin 2'-deoxyuridine, 5'-triphosphate nick end labeling. A1 adenosine receptor content was measured by immunohistochemistry. Relative expressions of the A1 adenosine receptor, proteins related to apoptosis (B Bcl-2-associated X protein; B-cell lymphoma 2), phosphoinositide 3-kinase, P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, cFos, and adenosine deaminase RNA specific two were quantified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot as needed. Results: Depression decreased rat weight. REMSD combined with fluoxetine increased body weight, prompted rat behavior, alleviated depression-induced damage, attenuated apoptosis, and promoted A1 adenosine receptor level in rat hippocampi. Furthermore, the combined therapy upregulated expressions of A1 adenosine receptor, B-cell lymphoma 2, and phosphoinositide 3-kinase but downregulated those of B-cell lymphoma 2-associated X protein, P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, cFos, and adenosine deaminase RNA specific 2 in the hippocampi of rats with depression. Conclusion:REMSD combined with fluoxetine protected rats against depression-induced damage and apoptosis in the hippocampus via the A1 adenosine receptor, providing a possible treatment strategy for depression.

Abstract
Abstract. Circadian mechanisms and the sleep-wakefulness rhythms guarantee survival, adaptation, efficient action in everyday life or in emergencies and well-being. Disordered circadian processes at central and/or cellular levels, sleep disorders, and unhealthy wakefulness/sleep rhythms can impair the physiological circadian organization and result in subjective, professional, or behavioral changes ranging from functional inadequacy to higher risks at work or on the road to medical relevance. Circadian rhythms and the sleep organization change ontogenetically; major changes result from normal aging and from the multiple diseases that are often associated. There are circular functional interactions involving sleep/sleep disorders, the autonomic and immune systems, and the functional changes in the circadian system due to aging that deserve attention but have been overlooked thus far.

Abstract
Objectives: This study examined the associations between parent-child relationships and sleep difficulty among older parents in the context of Chinese multiple-children and one-child families. Methods: Using the 2014 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, this study analyzed older parents' (N = 8,450) reports of sleep quality and relationships with each of children. Results: Results from multivariate logistic regression models showed that living alone, greater variations in children's financial transfers and emotional closeness, and more instrumental support from children were associated with higher risks of sleep difficulty for Chinese older parents with multiple children. The maximum levels of financial transfers and emotional closeness from all children were related to lower risks of sleep difficulty for parents from multiple-children families, while greater instrumental support from children was associated with higher risks of sleep difficulty for parents from one-child families. Discussion: Findings have implications for support programs for Chinese aging population with sleep problems.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by an asymptomatic period of amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition as insoluble extracellular plaque, intracellular tau aggregation, neuronal and synaptic loss, and subsequent cognitive dysfunction and dementia. A growing public health crisis, the worldwide prevalence of AD is expected to rise from 46.8 million individuals affected in 2015 to 131.5 million in 2050. Sleep disturbances have been associated with increased future risk of AD. A bi-directional relationship is hypothesized between sleep and AD with sleep disturbances as either markers for AD pathology and/or a mechanism mediating increased risk of AD. In this review, the evidence in humans supporting this complex relationship between sleep and AD will be discussed as well as the therapeutic potential and challenges of treating sleep disturbances to prevent or delay the onset of AD.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) affect a high proportion of the elderly population with an increasing prevalence. Sleep disturbances are frequent in those with MCI and AD. This review summarizes existing research on sleep disturbances and neuroinflammation in MCI and AD. Although strong evidence supports various pathways linking sleep and AD pathology, the temporal direction of this central relationship is not yet known. Improved understanding of sleep disturbance and neuroinflammation in MCI and AD may aid in the identification of targets for their prevention.
