Chemical composition of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in the eastern Arabian Peninsula

Water-soluble and trace metal species in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were determined for indoor and outdoor environments in Doha, Qatar. During the study period, PM2.5 concentrations showed significant variability across several indoor locations ranging from 7.1 to 75.8 μg m-3, while the outdoor mass concentration range was 34.7-154.4 µg m-3. The indoor and outdoor PM2.5 levels did not exhibit statistically significant correlation, suggesting efficient building envelope protection against outdoor PM2.5 pollution. Rather than outdoor sources, human activities such as cooking, cleaning, and smoking were the most significant influence on chemical composition of indoor PM2.5. NH4+ concentration was insufficient to neutralize SO42- indoors and outdoors, indicating the predominant presence of NH4HSO4. The enrichment factors indicated that outdoor Fe, Mn, Co, Cr, and Ni in PM2.5 mostly originated from crustal sources. In contrast, the remaining outdoor trace metals (Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and V) were mainly derived from anthropogenic sources. The indoor/outdoor concentration ratios revealed significant indoor sources for NH4+ and Cu. The crustal matter, water-soluble ions, and sea salt explained 42%, 21%, and 1% of the indoor PM2.5 mass, respectively. The same groups sequentially constituted 41%, 16%, and 1% of the outdoor PM2.5 mass.

Nanocluster Aerosols from Ozone-Human Chemistry Are Dominated by Squalene-Ozone Reactions

Nanocluster aerosols (NCAs, <3 nm particles) are associated with climate feedbacks and potentially with human health. Our recent study revealed NCA formation owing to the reaction of ozone with human surfaces. However, the underlying mechanisms driving NCA emissions remain unexplored. Squalene is the most abundant compound in human skin lipids that reacts with ozone, followed by unsaturated fatty acids. This study aims to examine the contribution of the squalene-ozone reaction to NCA formation and the influence of ozone and ammonia (NH3) levels. In a climate-controlled chamber, we painted squalene and 6-hexadecenoic acid (C16:1n6) on glass plates to facilitate their reactions with ozone. The squalene-ozone reaction was further investigated at different ozone levels (15 and 90 ppb) and NH3 levels (0 and 375 ppb). The results demonstrate that the ozonolysis of human skin lipid compounds contributes to NCA formation. With a typical squalene-C16:1n6 ratio found in human skin lipids (4:1), squalene generated 40 times more NCAs than did C16:1n6 and, thus, dominated NCA formation. More NCAs were generated with increased ozone levels, whereas increased NH3 levels were associated with the stronger generation of larger NCAs but fewer of the smallest ones. This study experimentally confirms that NCAs are primarily formed from squalene-ozone reactions in ozone-human chemistry.

Emissions from Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfection and Their Interaction with Mask Surfaces

A rise in the disinfection of spaces occurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as an increase in people wearing facial coverings. Hydrogen peroxide was among the recommended disinfectants for use against the virus. Previous studies have investigated the emissions of hydrogen peroxide associated with the disinfection of spaces and masks; however, those studies did not focus on the emitted byproducts from these processes. Here, we simulate the disinfection of an indoor space with H2O2 while a person wearing a face mask is present in the space by using an environmental chamber with a thermal manikin wearing a face mask over its breathing zone. We injected hydrogen peroxide to disinfect the space and utilized a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) to measure the primary disinfectant (H2O2) and a Vocus proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Vocus PTR-ToF-MS) to measure the byproducts from disinfection, comparing concentrations inside the chamber and behind the mask. Concentrations of the primary disinfectant and the byproducts inside the chamber and behind the mask remained elevated above background levels for 2-4 h after disinfection, indicating the possibility of extended exposure, especially when continuing to wear the mask. Overall, our results point toward the time-dependent impact of masks on concentrations of disinfectants and their byproducts and a need for regular mask change following exposure to high concentrations of chemical compounds.

A review of indoor nitrous acid (HONO) pollution: Measurement techniques, pollution characteristics, sources, and sinks

Indoor air quality is of major concern for human health and well-being. Nitrous acid (HONO) is an emerging indoor pollutant, and its indoor mixing ratios are usually higher than outdoor levels, ranging from a few to tens of parts per billion (ppb). HONO exhibits adverse effects to human health due to its respiratory toxicity and mutagenicity. Additionally, HONO can easily undergo photodissociation by ultraviolet light to produce hydroxyl radicals (OH•), which in turn trigger a series of further photochemical oxidation reactions of primary or secondary pollutants. The accumulation of indoor HONO can be attributed to both direct emissions from combustion sources, such as cooking, and secondary formation resulting from enhanced heterogeneous reactions of NOx on indoor surfaces. During the day, the primary sink of indoor HONO is photolysis to OH• and NO. Moreover, adsorption and/or reaction on indoor surfaces, and diffusion to the outside atmosphere contribute to HONO loss both during the day and at night. The level of indoor HONO is also affected by human occupancy, which can influence household factors such as temperature, humidity, light irradiation, and indoor surfaces. This comprehensive review article summarized the research progress on indoor HONO pollution based on indoor air measurements, laboratory studies, and model simulations. The environmental and health effects were highlighted, measurement techniques were summarized, pollution levels, sources and sinks, and household influencing factors were discussed, and the prospects in the future were proposed.

When Does Multiphase Chemistry Influence Indoor Chemical Fate?

Human chemical exposure often occurs indoors, where large variability in contaminant concentrations and indoor chemical dynamics make assessments of these exposures challenging. A major source of uncertainty lies in the rates of chemical transformations which, due to high surface-to-volume ratios and rapid air change rates relative to rates of gas-phase reactions indoors, are largely gas-surface multiphase processes. It remains unclear how important such chemistry is in controlling indoor chemical lifetimes and, therefore, human exposure to both parent compounds and transformation products. We present a multimedia steady-state fugacity-based model to assess the importance of multiphase chemistry relative to cleaning and mass transfer losses, examine how the physicochemical properties of compounds and features of the indoor environment affect these processes, and investigate uncertainties pertaining to indoor multiphase chemistry and chemical lifetimes. We find that multiphase reactions can play an important role in chemical fate indoors for reactive compounds with low volatility, i.e., octanol-air equilibrium partitioning ratios (Koa) above 108, with the impact of this chemistry dependent on chemical identity, oxidant type and concentration, and other parameters. This work highlights the need for further research into indoor chemical dynamics and multiphase chemistry to constrain human exposure to chemicals in the built environment.

Indoor air humidity revisited: Impact on acute symptoms, work productivity, and risk of influenza and COVID-19 infection

Recent epidemiological and experimental findings reconfirm that low indoor air humidity (dry air) increases the prevalence of acute eye and airway symptoms in offices, result in lower mucociliary clearance in the airways, less efficient immune defense, and deteriorate the work productivity. New epidemiological and experimental research also support that the environmental conditions for the risk of infection of influenza and COVID-19 virus is lowest in the Goldilocks zone of 40-60% relative humidity (RH) by decrease of the airways' susceptibility, which can be elevated by particle exposure. Furthermore, low RH increases the generation of infectious virus laden aerosols exhaled from infected people. In general, elevation of the indoor air humidity from dry air increases the health of the airways concomitantly with lower viability of infectious virus. Thus, the negative effects of ventilation with dry outdoor air (low absolute air humidity) should be assessed according to 1) weakened health and functionality of the airways, 2) increased viability and possible increased transmissibility of infectious virus, and 3) evaporation of virus containing droplets to dry out to droplet nuclei (also possible at high room temperature), which increases their floating time in the indoor air. The removal of acid-containing ambient aerosols from the indoor air by filtration increases pH, viability of infectious viruses, and the risk of infection, which synergistically may further increase by particle exposure. Thus, the dilution of indoor air pollutants and virus aerosols by dry outdoor air ventilation should be assessed and compared with the beneficial health effects by control of the center zone of 40-60% RH, an essential factor for optimal functionality of the airways, and with the additional positive impact on acute symptoms, work productivity, and reduced risk of infection.

Physiology or Psychology: What Drives Human Emissions of Carbon Dioxide and Ammonia?

Humans are the primary sources of CO2 and NH3 indoors. Their emission rates may be influenced by human physiological and psychological status. This study investigated the impact of physiological and psychological engagements on the human emissions of CO2 and NH3. In a climate chamber, we measured CO2 and NH3 emissions from participants performing physical activities (walking and running at metabolic rates of 2.5 and 5 met, respectively) and psychological stimuli (meditation and cognitive tasks). Participants' physiological responses were recorded, including the skin temperature, electrodermal activity (EDA), and heart rate, and then analyzed for their relationship with CO2 and NH3 emissions. The results showed that physiological engagement considerably elevated per-person CO2 emission rates from 19.6 (seated) to 46.9 (2.5 met) and 115.4 L/h (5 met) and NH3 emission rates from 2.7 to 5.1 and 8.3 mg/h, respectively. CO2 emissions reduced when participants stopped running, whereas NH3 emissions continued to increase owing to their distinct emission mechanisms. Psychological engagement did not significantly alter participants' emissions of CO2 and NH3. Regression analysis revealed that CO2 emissions were predominantly correlated with heart rate, whereas NH3 emissions were mainly associated with skin temperature and EDA. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of human metabolic emissions of CO2 and NH3.

Acetal Formation of Flavoring Agents with Propylene Glycol in E-Cigarettes: Impacts on Indoor Partitioning and Thirdhand Exposure

The widespread use of flavored e-cigarettes has led to a significant rise in teenage nicotine use. In e-liquids, the flavor carbonyls can form acetals with unknown chemical and toxicological properties. These acetals can cause adverse health effects on both smokers and nonsmokers through thirdhand exposure. This study aims to explore the impacts of these acetals formed in e-cigarettes on indoor partitioning and thirdhand exposure. Specifically, the acetalization reactions of commonly used flavor carbonyls in laboratory-made e-liquids were monitored using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. EAS-E Suite and polyparameter linear free energy relationships (PP-LFERs) were employed to estimate the partitioning coefficients for species. Further, a chemical two-dimensional partitioning model was applied to visualize the indoor equilibrium partitioning and estimate the distribution of flavor carbonyls and their acetals in the gas phase, aerosol phase, and surface reservoirs. Our results demonstrate that a substantial fraction of carbonyls were converted into acetals in e-liquids and their chemical partitioning was significantly influenced. This study shows that acetalization is a determinant factor in the exposure and toxicology of harmful carbonyl flavorings, with its impact extending to both direct exposure to smokers and involuntary exposure to nonsmokers.

Suppressor and calibration standard limitations in cation chromatography of ammonium and 10 alkylamines in atmospheric samples

Ammonia (NH3) and alkylamines are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and have been suggested to play important global roles through new particle formation and aerosol growth. In this work, we optimized an ion-chromatographic (IC) method to separate and quantify the ten most abundant atmospheric alkylamines with high selectivity and separation efficiency, using 4 μm packed columns and resin-based suppressors, alongside stabilizing amine standards. Modern resin suppressors operating on a gradient elution program affected the linear response of this IC technique. Calibration statistical analyses found a loss of analytes in these cation-exchange devices. Suppressor operational longevity was optimized by using a stepped current and an external water supply, which improved precision, accuracy, and LODs compared to other suppression modes. When this new method was applied to real samples, amines were found ubiquitously in size-resolved marine aerosol samples; monopropylamine, isomonopropylamine, and monobutylamine were detected and quantified, which have not been reported before. The molar ratio of the sum of aminium to ammonium ranged from 0.02 to 0.2, showcasing the application of the developed method towards studying the diversity and importance of alkylamines in coastal marine particle composition. The new analytical method also found NH3 present in a suite of new homes with a mean mixing ratio of 25 ± 15 ppbv; a common level reached between homes across the study during the first year of occupation which can then be transported outdoors.

Numerical Simulations of Synthetic Ester Hydrolysis in the Indoor Environment

The hydrolysis of synthetic esters (SEs), including phthalates and adipates, in damp indoor environments can lead to the release of volatile organic compounds implicated in poor air quality and acute health impacts, known as "sick building syndrome" (SBS). We have adapted the multiphase atmospheric chemistry box model, GAMMA, to simulate SE hydrolysis occurring in surface films in the indoor environment, along with multilayer boundary layer mass transfer and ventilation, in order to investigate this phenomenon on a process level. We then applied the model to analyze three scenarios in which hydrolysis has been hypothesized to have a significant impact on indoor air quality. Simulation results suggest that (1) alkaline hydrolysis of bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) from PVC flooring on damp surfaces alone is not sufficient to explain the levels of 2-ethylhexanol reported in indoor air during episodes of SBS; (2) acute exposure to 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) may be of concern during and shortly after the application of latex paint on an alkaline surface; and (3) alkaline hydrolysis of SEs following their airborne uptake in aqueous films is not expected to generate considerable amounts of alcohols associated with SBS.

The global burden of schizophrenia and the impact of urbanization during 1990-2019: An analysis of the global burden of disease study 2019

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS

The burden of schizophrenia is increasing. Assessing the global distribution of schizophrenia and understanding the association between urbanization factors and schizophrenia are crucial.

STUDY DESIGN

We conducted a two-stage analysis utilizing public data from GBD (global burden of disease) 2019 and the World Bank. First, the distribution of schizophrenia burden at the global, regional, and national levels as well as temporal trends was analyzed. Then, four composite indicators of urbanization (including demographic, spatial, economic, and eco-environment urbanization) were constructed from ten basic indicators. Panel data models were used to explore the relationship between urbanization indicators and the burden of schizophrenia.

RESULTS

In 2019, there were 23.6 million people with schizophrenia, an increase of 65.85% from 1990, and the country with the largest ASDR (age-standardized disability adjusted life years rate) was the United States of America, followed by Australia, and New Zealand. Globally, the ASDR of schizophrenia rose with the sociodemographic index (SDI). In addition, six basic urbanization indicators including urban population proportion, employment in industry/services proportion, urban population density, the population proportion in the largest city, GDP, and PM_2.5 concentration were positively associated with ASDR of schizophrenia, with the largest coefficients being urban population density. Overall, demographic, spatial, economic, and eco-environment urbanization all had positive effects on schizophrenia, and the estimated coefficients indicated that demographic urbanization was the most significant influence.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provided a comprehensive description of the global burden of schizophrenia and explored urbanization as a factor contributing to the variation in the burden of schizophrenia, and highlighted policy priorities for schizophrenia prevention in the context of urbanization.

Biological effects of negative air ions on human health and integrated multiomics to identify biomarkers: a literature review

Environmental pollution seriously affects human health. The concentration of negative air ions (NAIs), which were discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, is one of the factors used to evaluate air quality. Additionally, NAIs have been widely considered markers by scholars due to their unique biological function. The aim of this study was to summarize existing research and propose future research on the generation and temporal and spatial dynamic patterns of NAIs concentrations as well as the relationship between NAIs and human health. We identified 187 studies (published January 2013-January 2023) that met our inclusion criteria. Fourteen English studies evaluated the effects of NAIs on depression, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, reproduction and development, cognition, and sports muscle injury. Only two studies reported the associations of NAIs exposure with metabolic omics. NAIs concentrations vary temporally with solar radiation, air temperature, and relative humidity, while the temporal dynamic patterns of NAIs are affected by season, time, meteorological factors, air quality index, geographical location, forest vegetation, and other factors. Researchers have shown that exposure to NAIs may benefit our health by changing amino acid metabolism, which mainly manifests as increased anti-inflammation and reduced inflammation and antioxidation. Furthermore, exposure to NAIs promotes energy production, affects the expression of c-fos, and regulates 5-HT levels. There has been considerable interest in the potential effects of NAIs on human health and well-being, but the conclusions have been inconsistent and the mechanisms remain unclear. The use of omics to elucidate the biological mechanism of NAIs is relatively new and has some advantages.

Emerging investigator series: an instrument to measure and speciate the total reactive nitrogen budget indoors: description and field measurements

Reactive nitrogen species (N_r), defined here as all N-containing compounds except N₂ and N₂O, have been shown to be important drivers for indoor air quality. Key N_r species include NO_x (NO + NO₂), HONO and NH₃, which are known to have detrimental health effects. In addition, other N_r species that are not traditionally measured may be important chemical actors for indoor transformations (e.g. amines). Cooking and cleaning are significant sources of N_r, whose emission will vary depending on the type of activity and materials used. Here we present a novel instrument that measures the total gas-phase reactive nitrogen (tN_r) budget and key species NO_x, HONO, and NH₃ to demonstrate its suitability for indoor air quality applications. The tN_r levels were measured using a custom-built heated platinum (Pt) catalytic furnace to convert all N_r species to NO_x, called the tN_r oven. The measurement approach was validated through a series of control experiments, such that quantitative measurement and speciation of the total N_r budget are demonstrated. The optimum operating conditions of the tN_r oven were found to be 800 °C with a sampling flow rate of 630 cubic centimetres per minute (ccm). Oxidized nitrogen species are known to be quantitatively converted under these conditions. Here, the efficiency of the tN_r oven to convert reduced N_r species to NO_x was found to reach a maximum at 800 °C, with 103 ± 13% conversion for NH₃ and 79-106% for selected relevant amines. The observed variability in the conversion efficiency of reduced N_r species demonstrates the importance of catalyst temperature characterization for the tN_r oven. The instrument was deployed successfully in a commercial kitchen, a complex indoor environment with periods of rapidly changing levels, and shown to be able to reliably measure the tN_r budget during periods of longer-lived oscillations (>20 min), typical of indoor spaces. The measured NO_x, HONO and basic N_r (NH₃ and amines) were unable to account for all the measured tN_r, pointing to a substantial missing fraction (on average 18%) in the kitchen. Overall, the tN_r instrument will allow for detailed survey(s) of the key gaseous N_r species across multiple locations and may also identify missing N_r fractions, making this platform capable of stimulating more in-depth analysis in indoor atmospheres.

Expiratory Aerosol pH: The Overlooked Driver of Airborne Virus Inactivation

Respiratory viruses, including influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2, are transmitted by the airborne route. Air filtration and ventilation mechanically reduce the concentration of airborne viruses and are necessary tools for disease mitigation. However, they ignore the potential impact of the chemical environment surrounding aerosolized viruses, which determines the aerosol pH. Atmospheric aerosol gravitates toward acidic pH, and enveloped viruses are prone to inactivation at strong acidity levels. Yet, the acidity of expiratory aerosol particles and its effect on airborne virus persistence have not been examined. Here, we combine pH-dependent inactivation rates of influenza A virus (IAV) and SARS-CoV-2 with microphysical properties of respiratory fluids using a biophysical aerosol model. We find that particles exhaled into indoor air (with relative humidity ≥ 50%) become mildly acidic (pH ∼ 4), rapidly inactivating IAV within minutes, whereas SARS-CoV-2 requires days. If indoor air is enriched with nonhazardous levels of nitric acid, aerosol pH drops by up to 2 units, decreasing 99%-inactivation times for both viruses in small aerosol particles to below 30 s. Conversely, unintentional removal of volatile acids from indoor air may elevate pH and prolong airborne virus persistence. The overlooked role of aerosol acidity has profound implications for virus transmission and mitigation strategies.

Seasonal variations of dustfall fluxes and biochemical parameters in the foliage of selected indoor plants in Delhi, India

This study reports the seasonal variations in dry deposition of coarse and fine particles on the foliar surfaces of common indoor plants viz. Ficus elastica, Ficus lyrata, and Schefflera arboricola along with their biochemical changes in the urban households of metropolitan Delhi. The dustfall fluxes were significantly higher at the industrial site as compared to residential site and temporal variations indicated higher dustfall fluxes during the winter months as compared to other seasons. Seasonal concentrations of chlorophylls, pH, and soluble sugars were higher during monsoon season for the indoor plants whereas ascorbic acid content was higher in the winter season indicating more stress. The results of correlation plots revealed that the variations observed in the biochemical traits were interlinked with the changes in dustfall fluxes during different seasons, thereby reflecting the changes in air pollution stress faced by plant foliage. The air pollution tolerance index and anticipated performance index were evaluated to understand the overall tolerance of indoor plants toward air pollution which can be utilized in phytoremediation techniques. It was concluded that among the studied indoor plants, Ficus elastica and Ficus lyrata are better plant species than Schefflera arboricola for improving indoor air quality.

Partitioning of reactive oxygen species from indoor surfaces to indoor aerosols

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are among the species thought to be responsible for the adverse health effects of particulate matter (PM) inhalation. Field studies suggest that indoor sources of ROS contribute to measured ROS on PM in indoor air. We hypothesize that ozone reacts on indoor surfaces to form semi-volatile ROS, in particular organic peroxides (OPX), which partition to airborne particles. To test this hypothesis, we modeled ozone-induced formation of OPX, its decay and its partitioning to PM in a residential building and compared the results to field measurements. Simulations indicate that, while ROS of outdoor origin is the primary contributor to indoor ROS (in PM), a substantial fraction of ROS present in indoor PM is from ozone-surface chemistry. At an air change rate equal to 1/h, and an outdoor ozone mixing ratio of 35 ppb, 25% of the ROS concentration in air is due to indoor formation and partitioning of OPX to PM. For the same conditions, but with a modest indoor source of PM (1.5 mg h^-1), 44% of indoor ROS on PM is of indoor origin. An indoor source of ozone, such as an electrostatic air cleaner, also increases OPX present in indoor PM. The results of the simulations support the hypothesis that ozone-induced formation of OPX on indoor surfaces, and subsequent partitioning to aerosols, is sufficient to explain field observations. Therefore, indoor sourced ROS could contribute meaningfully to total inhaled PM-ROS.

Widespread formation of toxic nitrated bisphenols indoors by heterogeneous reactions with HONO

With numerous structurally diverse indoor contaminants, indoor transformation chemistry has been largely unexplored. Here, by integrating protein affinity purification and nontargeted mass spectrometry analysis (PUCA), we identified a substantial class of previously unrecognized indoor transformation products formed through gas-surface reactions with nitrous acid (HONO). Through the PUCA, we identified a noncommercial compound, nitrated bisphenol A (BPA), from house dust extracts strongly binding to estrogen-related receptor γ. The compound was detected in 28 of 31 house dust samples with comparable concentrations (ND to 0.30 μg/g) to BPA. Via exposing gaseous HONO to surface-bound BPA, we demonstrated it likely forms via a heterogeneous indoor chemical transformation that is highly selective toward bisphenols with electron-rich aromatic rings. We used 15N-nitrite for in situ labeling and found 110 nitration products formed from indoor contaminants with distinct aromatic moieties. This study demonstrates a previously unidentified class of chemical reactions involving indoor HONO, which should be incorporated into the risk evaluation of indoor contaminants, particularly bisphenols.

A review of indoor Gaseous organic compounds and human chemical Exposure: Insights from Real-time measurements

Gaseous organic compounds, mainly volatile organic compounds (VOCs), have become a wide concern in various indoor environments where we spend the majority of our daily time. The sources, compositions, variations, and sinks of indoor VOCs are extremely complex, and their potential impacts on human health are less understood. Owing to the deployment of the state-of-the-art real-time mass spectrometry during the last two decades, our understanding of the sources, dynamic changes and chemical transformations of VOCs indoors has been significantly improved. This review aims to summarize the key findings from mass spectrometry measurements in recent indoor studies including residence, classroom, office, sports center, etc. The sources and sinks, compositions and distributions of indoor VOCs, and the factors (e.g., human activities, air exchange rate, temperature and humidity) driving the changes in indoor VOCs are discussed. The physical and chemical processes of gas-particle partitioning and secondary oxidation processes of VOCs, and their impacts on human health are summarized. Finally, the recommendations for future research directions on indoor VOCs measurements and indoor chemistry are proposed.

New approach methods for assessing indoor air toxicity

Indoor air is typically a mixture of many chemicals at low concentrations without any adverse health effects alone, but in mixtures they may cause toxicity and risks to human health. The aim of this study was by using new approach methods to assess the potential toxicity of indoor air condensates. In specific, different in vitro test methods including cyto-and immunotoxicity, skin sensitization and endocrine disruption were applied. In addition to biological effects, the indoor air samples were subjected to targeted analysis of 25 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and Genapol X-80 (a nonionic emulsifier) suspected to be present in the samples, and to a non-targeted "total chemical scan" to find out whether the chemical composition of the samples is associated with the biological effects. The results confirm that assessing health risks of indoor air by analysing individual chemicals is not an adequate approach: We were not able to detect the VOCs and Genapol X-80 in the indoor air samples, yet, several types of toxicity, namely, cytotoxicity, immunotoxicity, skin sensitization and endocrine disruption were detected. In the non-targeted total chemical scan of the indoor air samples, a larger number of compounds were found in the cytotoxic samples than in the non-cytotoxic samples supporting the biological findings. If only one biological method would be selected for the screening of indoor air quality, THP-1 macrophage/WST-1 assay would best fit for the purpose as it is sensitive and serves as a good representative for different sub-toxic end points, including immunotoxicity, (skin) sensitization and endocrine disruption.

Effectiveness of air-purifying devices and measures to reduce the exposure to bioaerosols in school classrooms

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which suddenly appeared at the beginning of 2020, revealed our knowledge deficits in terms of ventilation and air pollution control. It took many weeks to realize that aerosols are the main route of transmission. The initial attempt to hold back these aerosols through textile masks seemed almost helpless, although there is sufficient knowledge about the retention capacity of fabric filters for aerosols. In the absence of a sufficient number of permanently installed heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, three main approaches are pursued: (a) increasing the air exchange rate by supplying fresh air, (b) using mobile air purifiers, and (c) disinfection by introducing active substances into the room air. This article discusses the feasibility of these different approaches critically. It also provides experimental results of air exchange measurements in a school classroom that is equipped with a built-in fan for supplying fresh air. With such a fan and a window tilted at the appropriate distance, an air exchange rate of 5/h can be set at a low power level and without any significant noise pollution. Heat balance calculations show that no additional heat exchanger is necessary in a normal classroom with outside temperatures above 10°C. Furthermore, a commercial mobile air purifier is studied in a chamber and a test room setup in order to examine and evaluate the efficiency of such devices against viable viruses under controlled and realistic conditions. For this purpose, bacteriophages of the type MS2 are used. Both window ventilation and air purifiers were found to be suitable to reduce the concentration of phages in the room.

Henry's Law Constants and Indoor Partitioning of Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds

Microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) play an essential role in many environmental fields, such as indoor air quality. Long-term exposure to odorous and toxic MVOCs can negatively affect the health of occupants. Recently, the involvement of surface reservoirs in indoor chemistry has been realized, which signifies the importance of the phase partitioning of volatile organic pollutants. However, reliable partition coefficients of many MVOCs are currently lacking. Equilibrium partition coefficients, such as Henry's law constant, H, are crucial for understanding the environmental behavior of chemicals. This study aims to experimentally determine the H values and their temperature dependence for key MVOCs under temperature relevant to the indoor environment. The H values were determined with the inert gas-stripping (IGS) method and variable phase ratio headspace (VPR-HS) technique. A two-dimensional partitioning model was applied to predict the indoor phase distribution of MVOCs and potential exposure pathways to the residences. The findings show that the MVOCs are likely distributed between the gas and weakly polar (e.g., organic-rich) reservoirs indoors. Temperature and the volume of reservoirs can sensitively affect indoor partitioning. Our results give a more comprehensive view of indoor chemical partitioning and exposure.

A modular mechanistic framework for estimating exposure to SVOCs: Next steps for modeling emission and partitioning of plasticizers and PFAS

Estimates of human exposure to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) such as phthalates, phthalate alternatives, and some per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are required for the risk-based evaluation of chemicals. Recently, a modular mechanistic modeling framework to rapidly predict SVOC emission and partitioning in indoor environments has been presented, in which several mechanistically consistent source emission categories (SECs) were identified. However, not all SECs have well-developed emission models. In addition, data on model parameters are missing even for frequently studied SVOCs. These knowledge gaps impede the comprehensive prediction of the fate of SVOCs indoors. In this paper, sets of high-priority phthalates, phthalate alternatives, and PFAS were identified based on chemical occurrence indoors and additional selection criteria. These high-priority chemicals served as the basis for exploring model parameter availability for existing indoor SVOC emission and partitioning models. The results reveal that additional experimental and modeling work is needed to fully understand the behavior of SVOCs indoors and to predict exposures with greater confidence and lower uncertainty. Modeling approaches to fill some of the identified gaps are proposed. The prioritized sets of chemicals and proposed new modeling approaches will help guide future research. The inclusion of polar phases in the framework will further expand its applicability and scope. IMPACT STATEMENT: This paper compiles data on high-priority chemicals commonly found indoors and information on the availability of applicable models and model parameters to predict emission, partitioning, and subsequent exposure to these chemicals. Modeling approaches for a selection of the missing SECs (source emission categories) are proposed, to illustrate the path forward. The comprehensive data set helps inform researchers, exposure assessors, and policy makers to better understand the state of the science regarding modeling of indoor exposure to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Temperature and indoor environments

From the thermodynamic perspective, the term temperature is clearly defined for ideal physical systems: A unique temperature can be assigned to each black body via its radiation spectrum, and the temperature of an ideal gas is given by the velocity distribution of the molecules. While the indoor environment is not an ideal system, fundamental physical and chemical processes, such as diffusion, partitioning equilibria, and chemical reactions, are predictably temperature-dependent. For example, the logarithm of reaction rate and equilibria constants are proportional to the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. It is therefore possible to have non-linear, very steep changes in chemical phenomena over a relatively small temperature range. On the contrary, transport processes are more influenced by spatial temperature, momentum, and pressure gradients as well as by the density, porosity, and composition of indoor materials. Consequently, emergent phenomena, such as emission rates or dynamic air concentrations, can be the result of complex temperature-dependent relationships that require a more empirical approach. Indoor environmental conditions are further influenced by the thermal comfort needs of occupants. Not only do occupants have to create thermal conditions that serve to maintain their core body temperature, which is usually accomplished by wearing appropriate clothing, but also the surroundings must be adapted so that they feel comfortable. This includes the interaction of the living space with the ambient environment, which can vary greatly by region and season. Design of houses, apartments, commercial buildings, and schools is generally utility and comfort driven, requiring an appropriate energy balance, sometimes considering ventilation but rarely including the impact of temperature on indoor contaminant levels. In our article, we start with a review of fundamental thermodynamic variables and discuss their influence on typical indoor processes. Then, we describe the heat balance of people in their thermal environment. An extensive literature study is devoted to the thermal conditions in buildings, the temperature-dependent release of indoor pollutants from materials and their distribution in the various interior compartments as well as aspects of indoor chemistry. Finally, we assess the need to consider temperature holistically with regard to the changes to be expected as a result of global emergencies such as climate change.

Emission Rates of Volatile Organic Compounds from Humans

Human-emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are mainly from breath and the skin. In this study, we continuously measured VOCs in a stainless-steel environmentally controlled climate chamber (22.5 m³, air change rate at 3.2 h^-1) occupied by four seated human volunteers using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Experiments with human whole body, breath-only, and dermal-only emissions were performed under ozone-free and ozone-present conditions. In addition, the effect of temperature, relative humidity, clothing type, and age was investigated for whole-body emissions. Without ozone, the whole-body total emission rate (ER) was 2180 ± 620 μg h^-1 per person (p^-1), dominated by exhaled chemicals. The ERs of oxygenated VOCs were positively correlated with the enthalpy of the air. Under ozone-present conditions (∼37 ppb), the whole-body total ER doubled, with the increase mainly driven by VOCs resulting from skin surface lipids/ozone reactions, which increased with relative humidity. Long clothing (more covered skin) was found to reduce the total ERs but enhanced certain chemicals related to the clothing. The ERs of VOCs derived from this study provide a valuable data set of human emissions under various conditions and can be used in models to better predict indoor air quality, especially for highly occupied environments.

Thirdhand smoke from tobacco, e-cigarettes, cannabis, methamphetamine and cocaine: Partitioning, reactive fate, and human exposure in indoor environments

A source of chemical exposure to humans, thirdhand smoke (THS) refers to the contamination that persists indoors following the cessation of a smoking event. The composition of thirdhand smoke depends on the type of substance from which it originates. Although past studies have investigated the effects of tobacco THS on indoor air quality and human health, few have focused on the chemical composition and health impacts of other sources and components of THS. Here we review the state of knowledge of the composition and partitioning behavior of various types of indoor THS, with a focus on THS from tobacco, e-cigarettes, cannabis, and illicit substances (methamphetamine and cocaine). The discussion is supplemented by estimates of human exposure to THS components made with a chemical fate and exposure model. The modeling results show that while very volatile THS compounds (i.e., aromatics) are likely to be taken up by inhalation, highly water-soluble compounds tended to be dermally absorbed. Conversely, minimally volatile THS compounds with low solubility are predicted to be ingested through hand-to-mouth and object-to-mouth contact.

The influence of photochemistry on outdoor to indoor NO2 in some European museums

This paper reports 1 year of monthly average NO₂ indoor to outdoor (I/O) concentrations measured in 10 European museums, and a simple steady-state box model that explains the annual variation. The measurements were performed in the EU FP5 project Master (EVK-CT-2002-00093). The work provides extensive documentation of the annual variation of NO₂ I/O concentration ratios, with ratios above unity in the summer, in situations with no indoor emissions of NO₂ . The modelling included the most relevant production and removal processes of NO₂ and showed that the outdoor photolysis was the probable main explanation of the annual trends in the NO₂ I/O concentration ratios.

Quantum Chemical Calculation and Evaluation of Partition Coefficients for Classical and Emerging Environmentally Relevant Organic Compounds

Octanol/water (K_OW), octanol/air (K_OA), and hexadecane/air (K_HdA) partition coefficients are calculated for 67 organic compounds of environmental concern using computational chemistry. The extended CRENSO workflow applied here includes the calculation of extensive conformer ensembles with semiempirical methods and refinement through density functional theory, taking into account solvation models, especially COSMO-RS, and thermostatistical contributions. This approach is particularly advantageous for describing large and nonrigid molecules. With regard to K_OW and K_HdA, one can refer to many experimental data from direct and indirect measurement methods, and very good matches with results from our quantum chemical workflow are evident. In the case of the K_OA values, however, good matches are only obtained for the experimentally determined values. Larger systematic deviations between data computed here and available, nonexperimental quantitative structure-activity relationship literature data occur in particular for phthalic acid esters and organophosphate esters. From a critical analysis of the coefficients calculated in this work and comparison with available literature data, we conclude that the presented quantum chemical composite approach is the most powerful so far for calculating reliable partition coefficients because all physical contributions to the conformational free energy are considered and the structure ensembles for the two phases are generated independently and consistently.

Dramatic Conformer-Dependent Reactivity of the Acetaldehyde Oxide Criegee Intermediate with Dimethylamine Via a 1,2-Insertion Mechanism

The reactivity of carbonyl oxides has previously been shown to exhibit strong conformer and substituent dependencies. Through a combination of synchrotron-multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry experiments (298 K and 4 Torr) and high-level theory [CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-F12//B2PLYP-D3/cc-pVTZ with an added CCSDT(Q) correction], we explore the conformer dependence of the reaction of acetaldehyde oxide (CH₃CHOO) with dimethylamine (DMA). The experimental data support the theoretically predicted 1,2-insertion mechanism and the formation of an amine-functionalized hydroperoxide reaction product. Tunable-vacuum ultraviolet photoionization probing of anti- or anti- + syn-CH₃CHOO reveals a strong conformer dependence of the title reaction. The rate coefficient of DMA with anti-CH₃CHOO is predicted to exceed that for the reaction with syn-CH₃CHOO by a factor of ∼34,000, which is attributed to submerged barrier (syn) versus barrierless (anti) mechanisms for energetically downhill reactions.

Indoor chlorine gas release in a natatorium: A case study

Pool chemicals are utilized in pools to inactivate pathogens, optimize pH, and increase water clarity. This is conducted to ensure public health and safety by reducing bacteria concentrations and allowing distressed swimmers to be detected underwater. In commercial recreational facilities, muriatic acid and gaseous CO₂ are typically used to maintain pH. Chlorine, which can take the form of liquid or solid tablets of sodium hypochlorite or granular calcium hypochlorite, is used to sanitize pool water, and is the most used chemical treatment in the world for swimming pools disinfection. If chlorine is mixed with muriatic acid, chlorine gas is formed, which can lead to severe injuries and fatalities (SIFs) to exposed individuals. This work illustrates an incident that occurred as a result of the simultaneous injection of muriatic acid and liquid sodium hypochlorite into a recreational natatorium chemical feed line. This led to the release of chlorine gas in the indoor environment, which resulted in injuries to five patrons. Furthermore, strategies are proposed to prevent this from occurring and to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future. These include the implementation of fail-safe logic to prevent the controller from malfunctioning and ensuring that controller program settings do not permit simultaneous chemical injection.

Ozone Initiates Human-Derived Emission of Nanocluster Aerosols

Nanocluster aerosols (NCAs, particles <3 nm) are important players in driving climate feedbacks and processes that impact human health. This study reports, for the first time, NCA formation when gas-phase ozone reacts with human surfaces. In an occupied climate-controlled chamber, we detected NCA only when ozone was present. NCA emissions were dependent on clothing coverage, occupant age, air temperature, and humidity. Ozone-initiated chemistry with human skin lipids (particularly their primary surface reaction products) is the key mechanism driving NCA emissions, as evidenced by positive correlations with squalene in human skin wipe samples and known gaseous products from ozonolysis of skin lipids. Oxidation by OH radicals, autoxidation reactions, and human-emitted NH₃ may also play a role in NCA formation. Such chemical processes are anticipated to generate aerosols of the smallest size (1.18-1.55 nm), whereas larger clusters result from subsequent growth of the smaller aerosols. This study shows that whenever we encounter ozone indoors, where we spend most of our lives, NCAs will be produced in the air around us.

Indoor NH3 variation and its relationship with outdoor NH3 in urban Beijing

Online measurements of indoor and outdoor ammonia (NH₃ ) were conducted at a university building in Haidian District, Beijing, to investigate their variation characteristics, indoor-outdoor differences, influencing factors, and possible contribution of indoor NH₃ to atmospheric NH₃ . Indoor NH3 mixing ratios varied greatly among the rooms of the same building. Indoor NH₃ mixing ratio peaked at 1.43 ppm in a toilet. Both indoor and outdoor NH₃ mixing ratios exhibited higher values during summer and lower values during winter and correlated significantly with relative humidity and temperature. Moreover, their daily mean mixing ratios were significantly correlated with each other. But indoor and outdoor NH₃ in cold months exhibited quite different diurnal variations. During the measurement period, indoor NH₃ mixing ratios were substantially higher than those outdoors, by an average factor of 3.1 (1.0-6.6). This indicates that indoor NH₃ could be a source of outdoor atmospheric NH₃ . The contribution of indoor NH₃ to atmospheric NH₃ was estimated at 0.7 ± 0.5 Gg NH₃ -N·a^-1 , accounting for approximately 1.0 ± 0.7% of total emissions in Beijing and being comparable to industry, biomass combustion, and soil emissions, but lower than transportation emissions. The influence of COVID-19 control measures caused indoor and outdoor NH₃ mixing ratios to decrease by 22.8% and 19.3%, respectively-attributable to decreased human activity and traffic flow.

Indoor exposure levels of ammonia in residences, schools, and offices in China from 1980 to 2019: A systematic review

Indoor ammonia (NH₃ ) pollution has been paid more and more attention in view of its health risk. However, few studies have investigated the exposure level in the non-occupational environment in China. This study systematically reviewed the indoor ammonia exposure level in different regions, the equivalent exposure concentration of different populations, and the factors that influence indoor air ammonia in residences, offices, and schools in China. The literature published in 1980-2019 from main databases was searched and detailed screened, and finally, 56 related studies were selected. The results illustrated that the median concentration of indoor air ammonia in residences, offices, and school buildings was 0.21 mg/m³ , 0.26 mg/m³ , and 0.15 mg/m³ . There were 46.4%, 71.4%, and 40% of these samples exceeding the NH₃  standard, respectively. The national concentrations and the equivalent exposure levels of adults and children were calculated and found to be higher than 0.20 mg/m³ . The concentration of ammonia varied greatly in different climate zones and economic development regions. Higher concentrations were found in the severe cold zone and the regions with higher economic level. This review reveals a high exposure risk of indoor air ammonia and the crucial impact of human emission, indoor air temperature, new concrete, and economic level, suggesting further investigation on indoor air ammonia evaluation and health effects.

Kinetic multi-layer model of film formation, growth, and chemistry (KM-FILM): Boundary layer processes, multi-layer adsorption, bulk diffusion, and heterogeneous reactions

Large surface area-to-volume ratios indoors cause heterogeneous interactions to be especially important. Semi-volatile organic compounds can deposit on impermeable indoor surfaces forming thin organic films. We developed a new model to simulate the initial film formation by treating gas-phase diffusion and turbulence through a surface boundary layer and multi-layer reversible adsorption on rough surfaces, as well as subsequent film growth by resolving bulk diffusion and chemical reactions in a film. The model was applied with consistent parameters to reproduce twenty-one sets of film formation measurements due to multi-layer adsorption of multiple phthalates onto different indoor-relevant surfaces, showing that the films should initially be patchy with the formation of pyramid-like structures on the surface. Sensitivity tests showed that highly turbulent conditions can lead to the film growing by more than a factor of two compared to low turbulence conditions. If surface films adopt an ultra-viscous state with bulk diffusion coefficients of less than 10^-18  cm² s^-1 , a significant decrease in film growth is expected. The presence of chemical reactions in the film has the potential to increase the rate of film growth by nearly a factor of two.

Volatile organic compound emissions during HOMEChem

Quantifying speciated concentrations and emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is critical to understanding the processes that control indoor VOC dynamics, airborne chemistry, and human exposures. Here, we present source strength profiles from the HOMEChem study, quantifying speciated VOC emissions from scripted experiments (with multiple replicates) of cooking, cleaning, and human occupancy and from unperturbed baseline measurements of the building and its contents. Measurements using a proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer were combined with tracer-based determinations of air-change rates to enable mass-balance-based calculations of speciated, time-resolved VOC source strengths. The building and its contents were the dominant emission source into the house, with large emissions of acetic acid, methanol, and formic acid. Cooking emissions were greater than cleaning emissions and were dominated by ethanol. Bleach cleaning generated high emissions of chlorinated compounds, whereas natural product cleaning emitted predominantly terpenoids. Occupancy experiments showed large emissions of siloxanes from personal care products in the morning, with much lower emissions in the afternoon. From these results, VOC emissions were simulated for a hypothetical 24-h period, showing that emissions from the house and its contents make up nearly half of total indoor VOC emissions.

Modeling the Removal of Water-Soluble Trace Gases from Indoor Air via Air Conditioner Condensate

Water-soluble trace gas (WSTG) loss from indoor air via air conditioning (AC) units has been observed in several studies, but these results have been difficult to generalize. In the present study, we designed a box model that can be used to investigate and estimate WSTG removal due to partitioning to AC coil condensate. We compared the model output to measurements of a suite of organic acids cycling in an indoor environment and tested the model by varying the input AC parameters. These tests showed that WSTG loss via AC cycling is influenced by Henry's law constant of the compound in question, which is controlled by air and water temperatures and the condensate pH. Air conditioning unit specifications also impact WSTG loss through variations in the sensible heat ratio, the effective recirculation rate of air through the unit, and the timing of coil and fan operation. These findings have significant implications for indoor modeling. To accurately model the fate of indoor WSTGs, researchers must either measure or otherwise account for these unique environmental and operational characteristics.

Formation of Oxidized Gases and Secondary Organic Aerosol from a Commercial Oxidant-Generating Electronic Air Cleaner

The COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for indoor air cleaners. While some commercial electronic air cleaners can be effective in reducing primary pollutants and inactivating bioaerosol, studies on the formation of secondary products from oxidation chemistry during their use are limited. Here, we measured oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) and the chemical composition of particles generated from a hydroxyl radical generator in an office. During operation, enhancements in OVOCs, especially low-molecular-weight organic acids, were detected. Rapid increases in particle number and mass concentrations were observed, corresponding to the formation of highly oxidized secondary organic aerosol (SOA) (O:C ∼ 1.3), with an enhanced signal at m/z 44 (CO2+) in the organic mass spectra. These results suggest that organic acids generated during VOC oxidation contributed to particle nucleation and SOA formation. Nitrate, sulfate, and chloride also increased during the oxidation without a corresponding increase in ammonium, suggesting organic nitrate, organic sulfate, and organic chloride formation. As secondary species are reported to have detrimental health effects, further studies should not be limited to the inactivation of bioaerosol or reduction of particular VOCs, but should also evaluate potential OVOCs and SOA formation from electronic air cleaners in different indoor environments.

Gaseous and particulate reactive nitrogen species in the indoor air of selected households in New Delhi

The present study reports the indoor abundance of inorganic trace gases (NH₃, NO₂ and SO₂) and their corresponding particulates (NH₄⁺, NO₃^- and SO₄^2-) along with other major ionic species present in the aerosol form (Cl^-, F^-, Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺), in the urban households of megacity Delhi (India). Two different households (DH site and MH site) were selected in the city based on the variation in the land use patterns of the locations in which they were situated. Trace gases followed the order NH₃ > SO₂ > NO₂ at both the sites with NH₃ contributing about 90% and 85% to the total Nr species at DH and MH sites, respectively. NH₃ showed maximum indoor concentrations during monsoon season whereas NO₂ and SO₂ were higher during winter season. The gas to particle conversion of the inorganic trace gases was studied by calculating their oxidation ratios which followed the order SOR > NOR > NHR, indicating that SO₂ showed more oxidative conversion to SO₄^2- as compared to NO₂ and NH₃ in the indoor setup. The chemical composition of the particulates revealed that Ca²⁺ and SO₄^2- were the most abundant cation and anion, respectively, among the measured ionic species at both sites and the concentrations of all the major ions were higher for the industrial MH site as compared to the residential DH site. Source apportionment using principal component analysis and mass ratios showed that indoor activities such as cooking, cleaning along with others such as biomass burning and dust resuspension were responsible for the indoor composition of particulates at DH site whereas outdoor influences such as coal burning and industrial emissions from local sources were prominent at MH site due to its industrialized surroundings. For naturally ventilated households (such as the present study), it was observed that the emissions generated indoors as well as the characteristic outdoor influences seem to influence the overall indoor air composition and quality.

Assessing Human Exposure to SVOCs in Materials, Products, and Articles: A Modular Mechanistic Framework

A critical review of the current state of knowledge of chemical emissions from indoor sources, partitioning among indoor compartments, and the ensuing indoor exposure leads to a proposal for a modular mechanistic framework for predicting human exposure to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Mechanistically consistent source emission categories include solid, soft, frequent contact, applied, sprayed, and high temperature sources. Environmental compartments are the gas phase, airborne particles, settled dust, indoor surfaces, and clothing. Identified research needs are the development of dynamic emission models for several of the source emission categories and of estimation strategies for critical model parameters. The modular structure of the framework facilitates subsequent inclusion of new knowledge, other chemical classes of indoor pollutants, and additional mechanistic processes relevant to human exposure indoors. The framework may serve as the foundation for developing an open-source community model to better support collaborative research and improve access for application by stakeholders. Combining exposure estimates derived using this framework with toxicity data for different end points and toxicokinetic mechanisms will accelerate chemical risk prioritization, advance effective chemical management decisions, and protect public health.

Negative ions offset cardiorespiratory benefits of PM2.5 reduction from residential use of negative ion air purifiers

Negative ion air purifiers (NIAPs), as a less costly alternative to the HEPA filtration, have been increasingly deployed in China and potentially elsewhere. While reducing indoor concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5 ), NIAPs generate massive amounts of negative ions that may be of health concern. We performed week-long interventions with NIAPs in the dormitories of 56 healthy college students living in Beijing. In a randomized order, each student underwent a true and a sham NIAP session. Cardiorespiratory outcomes were measured before and after each session. The use of true NIAPs reduced indoor PM_2.5 concentrations significantly, while notably increased negative ion levels. Increases in PM_2.5 and negative ion (NI) exposure were independently associated with increased urinary concentration of malondialdehyde, a biomarker of systemic oxidative stress, resulting in a null net effect of NIAP on malondialdehyde. Likewise, no significant net effects of NIAPs were observed for other outcomes indicative of lung function, vascular tone, arterial stiffness, and inflammation. Our findings suggest that negative ions, possibly along with their reaction products with the room air constituents, adversely affect health. The downsides do not support the use of NIAPs as a health-based mitigation strategy to reduce PM_2.5 exposure, especially in residences with PM_2.5 concentrations that are not extremely high.

Chemical Composition, Spatial Homogeneity, and Growth of Indoor Surface Films

Organic films on indoor surfaces are ubiquitous, but details about their composition and growth over timescales less than a month are not fully understood. To address these gaps in understanding, organic film samples in an apartment unit were collected over the course of 17 days using passive samplers and analyzed in a non-targeted manner using direct analysis in real-time mass spectrometry (DART-MS). Overall, the chemical composition observed across various locations within the apartment are very similar. Mass spectra also show clear evidence for the growth of semi-volatile compounds from natural sources and consumer products, such as carboxylic acids and plasticizers. Certain compounds show evidence for equilibration, mostly consistent with surface partitioning models based on octanol-air partition coefficients (K_oa). Compounds which have higher molecular weight or larger K_oa values tend to equilibrate later, leading to an overall shift in the composition of the film as a function of collection time. Growth rates of film thickness are at least 0.05 nm/day based on a limited number of individually calibrated ions.

Human Ammonia Emission Rates under Various Indoor Environmental Conditions

Ammonia (NH₃) is typically present at higher concentrations in indoor air (∼10-70 ppb) than in outdoor air (∼50 ppt to 5 ppb). It is the dominant neutralizer of acidic species in indoor environments, strongly influencing the partitioning of gaseous acidic and basic species to aerosols, surface films, and bulk water. We have measured NH₃ emissions from humans in an environmentally controlled chamber. A series of experiments, each with four volunteers, quantified NH₃ emissions as a function of temperature (25.1-32.6 °C), clothing (long-sleeved shirts/pants or T-shirts/shorts), age (teenagers, adults, and seniors), relative humidity (low or high), and ozone (<2 ppb or ∼35 ppb). Higher temperature and more skin exposure (T-shirts/shorts) significantly increased emission rates. For adults and seniors (long clothing), NH₃ emissions are estimated to be 0.4 mg h^-1 person^-1 at 25 °C, 0.8 mg h^-1 person^-1 at 27 °C, and 1.4 mg h^-1 person^-1 at 29 °C, based on the temperature relationship observed in this study. Human NH₃ emissions are sufficient to neutralize the acidifying impacts of human CO₂ emissions. Results from this study can be used to more accurately model indoor and inner-city outdoor NH₃ concentrations and associated chemistry.
