Abstract
Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) was originally identified as an important metabolic regulator which plays a crucial physiological role in regulating a variety of metabolic parameters through the metabolic network. As a novel multifunctional endocrine growth factor, the role of FGF21 in the metabolic network warrants extensive exploration. This insight was obtained from the observation that the FGF21-dependent mechanism that regulates lipid metabolism, glycogen transformation, and biological effectiveness occurs through the coordinated participation of the liver, adipose tissue, central nervous system, and sympathetic nerves. This review focuses on the role of FGF21-uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) signaling in lipid metabolism and how FGF21 alleviates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Additionally, this review reveals the mechanism by which FGF21 governs glucolipid metabolism. Recent research on the role of FGF21 in the metabolic network has mostly focused on the crucial pathway of glucolipid metabolism. FGF21 has been shown to have multiple regulatory roles in the metabolic network. Since an adequate understanding of the concrete regulatory pathways of FGF21 in the metabolic network has not been attained, this review sheds new light on the metabolic mechanisms of FGF21, explores how FGF21 engages different tissues and organs, and lays a theoretical foundation for future in-depth research on FGF21-targeted treatment of metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Background: Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are the most widely used anthropometric indices for identifying obesity. This study aimed to compare and clarify the usefulness of BMI, WC, and the combination of these two indicators in predicting nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods: This cross-sectional study included 15,267 Korean adults. We defined four obesity categories using BMI and WC as follows: BMI nonobese and WC nonobese (BNWN); BMI obese and WC nonobese (BOWN); BMI nonobese and WC obese (BNWO); and BMI obese and WC obese (BOWO). Analysis of variance was used to compare fatty liver severity across each category. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for NAFLD were calculated using multiple logistic regression. Results: Compared with BNWN, participants with BNWO were 3.235 (95% CI: 2.774-3.773) times more likely and participants with BOWN were 2.344 (95% CI: 2.045-2.687) times more likely to have NAFLD. Participants with BNWO had higher OR for NAFLD than those with BOWN. Moreover, BOWO participants had the highest OR of 4.788 (95% CI: 4.350-5.270) for NAFLD among all obesity categories. Conclusion: Combined obesity classification by BOWO is the most reliable indicator for NAFLD presence in Korean adults.

Abstract
Dyslipidaemia is a disorder of the lipid metabolism, caused mainly by poor eating habits. The most severe consequence of an inappropriate diet is the development of atherosclerosis and hepatic steatosis. It is generally believed that a change in nutrition, and increased physical activity can eliminate these health problems. The contemporary research and therapies used to treat dyslipidemia mainly focus on lowering the triglyceride and cholesterol levels. However, disturbances in trace element homeostasis or the accumulation of toxic elements can also affect physiological processes, and be involved in the development of metabolically mediated diseases. The present study aimed to determine the mineral profiles of liver and brain tissues collected at autopsy (n = 39) in groups of people with hepatic steatosis (n = 5), atherosclerosis (n = 9), hepatic steatosis, and atherosclerosis (n = 16), and others without the selected disorders (n = 9). Concentrations of 51 elements were analysed via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after the initial wet mineralisation of the samples with nitric acid. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the hepatic steatosis group suffers from a deficiency of important trace elements, such as copper, zinc, and molybdenum (p < 0.05), whereas the group with atherosclerosis is characterised by elevated levels of cadmium in the liver tissue (p = 0.01). Analysing the mean values of the element concentrations measured in 11 brain areas, statistically significant higher levels of calcium and copper (p < 0.001) were found in the atherosclerosis group, compared to the hepatic steatosis group, confirming the involvement of these elements in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. In addition, an accumulation of cadmium, lead, titanium, and strontium in the brain tissue was observed in the atherosclerosis group. While the accumulation of individual elements differs in different parts of the brain, the differences in the cadmium content (p < 0.05) between the study groups apply to the whole brain, except for the nucleus accumbens septi area, where a statistically significant titanium accumulation occurs in the atherosclerosis and steatosis groups, compared to the others (p < 0.05). In addition, the disruption of elemental homeostasis in the brain of a single case with bipolar disorder, and a case with hip replacement was observed. Our results confirm the involvement of chemical elements in the pathogenesis of selected metabolic diseases, and the need for further studies in larger populations.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) seems to have some molecular links with atherosclerosis (ATH); however, the molecular pathways which connect both pathologies remain unexplored to date. The identification of common factors is of great interest to explore some therapeutic strategies to improve the outcomes for those affected patients. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for NAFLD and ATH were extracted from the GSE89632 and GSE100927 datasets, and common up- and downregulated DEGs were identified. Subsequently, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network based on the common DEGs was performed. Functional modules were identified, and the hub genes were extracted. Then, a Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway analysis of common DEGs was performed. DEGs analysis in NAFLD and ATH showed 21 genes that were regulated similarly in both pathologies. The common DEGs with high centrality scores were ADAMTS1 and CEBPA which appeared to be down- and up-regulated in both disorders, respectively. For the analysis of functional modules, two modules were identified. The first one was oriented to post-translational protein modification, where ADAMTS1 and ADAMTS4 were identified, and the second one mainly related to the immune response, where CSF3 was identified. These factors could be key proteins with an important role in the NAFLD/ATH axis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the commonest form of chronic liver disease worldwide and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. Screening and early diagnosis of high-risk groups are important for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD; however, traditional imaging examinations are expensive and difficult to perform on a large scale. This study aimed to develop a simple and reliable predictive model based on the risk factors for NAFLD using a decision tree algorithm for the diagnosis of NAFLD and reduction of healthcare costs. METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional study included 22,819 participants who underwent annual health examinations between January 2019 and December 2019 at Physical Examination Center in Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University. After rigorous data screening, data of 9190 participants were retained in the final dataset for use in the J48 decision tree algorithm for the construction of predictive models. Approximately 66% of these patients (n=6065) were randomly assigned to the training dataset for the construction of the decision tree, while 34% of the patients (n=3125) were assigned to the test dataset to evaluate the performance of the decision tree. RESULTS The results showed that the J48 decision tree classifier exhibited good performance (accuracy=0.830, precision=0.837, recall=0.830, F-measure=0.830, and area under the curve=0.905). The decision tree structure revealed waist circumference as the most significant attribute, followed by triglyceride levels, systolic blood pressure, sex, age, and total cholesterol level. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that a decision tree analysis can be used to screen high-risk individuals for NAFLD. The key attributes in the tree structure can further contribute to the prevention of NAFLD by suggesting implementable targeted community interventions, which can help improve the outcome of NAFLD and reduce the burden on the healthcare system.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a major public health problem worldwide. NAFLD (both simple steatosis and steatohepatitis) is characterized by alterations in hepatic lipid metabolism, which may lead to the development of severe liver complications including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Thus, an exhaustive examination of lipid disorders in the liver of NAFLD patients is much needed. Mass spectrometry-based lipidomics platforms allow for in-depth analysis of lipid alterations in a number of human diseases, including NAFLD. This review summarizes the current research on lipid alterations associated with NAFLD and related complications, with special emphasis on the changes in long-chain and short-chain fatty acids levels in both serum and liver tissue, as well as in the hepatic expression of genes encoding the enzymes catalyzing lipid interconversions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE In spite of therapeutic effect of tamoxifen on the breast cancer, it has some side effects on the liver including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In this study the effects of Rosa canina distilled water on the tamoxifen-induced fatty liver and oxidative stress status in male rats were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty four adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of 6: 1st group: Untreated control rats (C), 2nd group (T): The rats received tamoxifen, 3rd group (T+R): Rats received tamoxifen and Rosa canina distilled water and 4th group (R): Rats received only Rosa canina distilled water. Tamoxifen at 1 mg kg-1/day was injected subcutaneously for 7 days and the rats received orally Rosa canina distilled water at 1 mL/rat/daily for 14 days. At the end of the study, animals were studied for serum biochemical parameters (glucose, lipid profile, BUN, creatinine, uric acid, urea, ALT, AST, ALP, total protein, bilirubin, oxidative stress indices, sperm analysis and histology of the liver. The data were analyzed with SPSS software version 20 and expressed as Mean±SD. RESULTS Rosa canina distilled water improved liver enzyme and renal function indices which disturbed due to tamoxifen treatment. While tamoxifen enhanced lipid peroxidation, Rosa canina distilled water reduced it. In addition, tamoxifen reduced the mobility, morphology and viability of sperms, but the Rosa canina distilled water enhanced the sperm parameters. Histological results also confirmed the adverse effect of tamoxifen and the favorable impact of the Rosa canina distilled water on the liver structures of animals. CONCLUSION Rosa canina distilled water could modulate tamoxifen-induced fatty liver as well as improving the sperm parameters.

Abstract
Objective: To assess the relationship between the degree of waist circumference (WC) and
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese adolescents of both genders,
analyzed according to quartiles of WC. Methods: Cross-sectional study that involved 247 obese adolescents aged 12–19 years. Mean
values of the nutritional parameters and serum analyses were compared with the
groups using the independent t-test. Pearson correlation
coefficient was used to determine the relationship of the parameters studied.
Chi-square test for trend was used to determine the relationship between the
prevalence of the NAFLD and WC quartile by gender. Results: NAFLD were presented in 60% of the study participants. Obese adolescents in the
3rd and 4th quartiles of WC presented higher prevalence of NAFLD when compared
with that in the 1st quartile in both genders. The NAFLD patients had
significantly higher values for body weight, BMI (body mass index), BAZ-score
(BMI-for-age z-scores), total fat (% and kg), WC, visceral fat, insulin, insulin
resistance index (HOMA-IR), aspartate aminotransferase and alanine
aminotransferase, when compared with non-NAFLD obese adolescents. Conclusions: In conclusion, the results presented here suggest that an increase in WC can
reliably predict the risk of NAFLD in obese adolescents. This is a low cost and
easy-to-use tool that can help in screening in adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to establish the association between anthropometric parameters and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and to determine the most reliable measurement as a parameter in predicting NAFLD. METHODS Two-hundred fifty-three obese children of ages 10 to 18 years were enrolled in this study. Anthropometric data and metabolic parameters such as fasting blood glucose, insulin and lipid levels, were measured. Liver function tests were assessed. NAFLD was determined by ultrasound. RESULTS Most metabolic parameters and anthropometric indices were significantly higher in children with NAFLD. A univariate logistic regression analysis was performed, taking NAFLD status as the dependent variable and anthropometric parameters as the independent variables. NAFLD was affected significantly by the anthropometric values. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that neck circumference (NC) was the only parameter which determined the risk in both genders. Each 1 cm increase in the NC increased the risk of NAFLD 1.544-fold (p<0.001, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.357-2.214) in the boys and 1.733-fold (p=0.001, 95% CI: 1.185-2.012) in the girls. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to compare the reliability of anthropometric measurements. NC was observed to be a better indicator. CONCLUSION Measurement of the NC was shown to be associated with NAFLD in children. We suggest the use of NC as a novel, simple, practical, and reliable anthropometric index in predicting children at risk for NAFLD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between the degree of waist circumference (WC) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese adolescents of both genders, analyzed according to quartiles of WC. METHODS Cross-sectional study that involved 247 obese adolescents aged 12-19 years. Mean values of the nutritional parameters and serum analyses were compared with the groups using the independent t-test. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship of the parameters studied. Chi-square test for trend was used to determine the relationship between the prevalence of the NAFLD and WC quartile by gender. RESULTS NAFLD were presented in 60% of the study participants. Obese adolescents in the 3rd and 4th quartiles of WC presented higher prevalence of NAFLD when compared with that in the 1st quartile in both genders. The NAFLD patients had significantly higher values for body weight, BMI (body mass index), BAZ-score (BMI-for-age z-scores), total fat (% and kg), WC, visceral fat, insulin, insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, when compared with non-NAFLD obese adolescents. CONCLUSIONS The results presented here suggest that an increase in WC can reliably predict the risk of NAFLD in obese adolescents. This is a low cost and easy-to-use tool that can help in screening in adolescents.

Abstract
Background/Aims Waist circumference (WC) is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome and is related to insulin resistance (IR) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The purpose of this study was to determine the association between WC and IR and NAFLD in apparently healthy Korean adults. Methods The volunteers included in this cross-sectional study comprised 9,159 adults (5,052 men, 4,107 women) who participated in a comprehensive health checkup program. IR was evaluated by the homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) and was considered to be present when the HOMA-IR score was >2. NAFLD was evaluated by ultrasound examination. Elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was defined as >40 IU/L in men and >35 IU/L in women. Logistic regression was performed to determine the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for NAFLD, IR, and ALT according to categorized levels of WC. Results NAFLD was found in 2,553 (27.9%) of the participants (82.6% men, 17.4% women), while IR and elevated ALT were found in 17.2% (68.1% men, 31.9% women) and 10% (83% men, 17% women), respectively. After adjusting for confounding factors, the prevalence of NAFLD, IR, and elevated ALT was significantly associated with increases in WC quartile: highest quartile for NAFLD in men, OR=15.539, 95% CI=12.687-19.033; highest quartile for NAFLD in women, OR=48.732, 95% CI=23.918-99.288 (P<0.001); and highest quartile for IR in men, OR=17.576, 95% CI=13.283-23.255; highest quartile for IR in women, OR=11.078, 95% CI=7.813-15.708 (P<0.001); highest quartile for elevated ALT in men, OR=7.952, 95% CI=6.046-10.459; and highest quartile for elevated ALT in women, OR=8.487, 95% CI=4.679-15.395 (P<0.001). Conclusions WC contributes to IR and NAFLD in apparently healthy Korean adults, and thus may be an important factor in the development of IR and NAFLD.

Abstract
The sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) is responsible for most glucose reabsorption in the kidney and has been proposed as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. In the present study, the therapeutic effects of SGLT2 selective inhibitor ipragliflozin were examined in high-fat diet and streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced type 2 diabetic mice which exhibit impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and obesity. Single administration of ipragliflozin dose-dependently increased urinary glucose excretion, reduced blood glucose and plasma insulin levels, and improved glucose intolerance. Four-week repeated administration of ipragliflozin improved not only glucose tolerance, hyperglycemia, and hyperinsulinemia but also impaired insulin secretion, hyperlipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and obesity with a concomitant increase in urinary glucose excretion. In addition, ipragliflozin reduced plasma and liver levels of oxidative stress biomarkers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and protein carbonyl) and inflammatory markers (interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor α, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, and c-reactive protein), and improved liver injury as assessed by plasma levels of aminotransferases. These results demonstrate that SGLT2 selective inhibitor ipragliflozin improves not only hyperglycemia but also diabetes/obesity-associated metabolic abnormalities in type 2 diabetic mice and suggest that ipragliflozin may be useful in treating type 2 diabetes with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease encompasses a spectrum ranging from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis without excess alcohol intake and is considered to be the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. Recent studies indicate that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is closely related to cardiovascular disease, especially to thickening of the intima-media layer of the carotid artery, as the morphostructural manifestation of the presence of subclinical atheromatosis. Therefore, the correct management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease would allow the natural history of both the liver disease and the atherosclerosis to be modified.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of combined Chinese herbs and behavioral intervention on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
METHODS: One hundred and twenty NAFLD patients were randomized into treatment group (n = 90) and control group (n = 30). Both groups underwent behavioral intervention and treatment with oral ZhiBiTai. Chinese herbal therapy was added in the treatment group. The treatment group was further divided into three subgroups and treated with five basic prescriptions. The improvement in clinical symptoms and amelioration of hepatic changes were determined, and total curative effect was evaluated 12 weeks after treatment.
RESULTS: A significant amelioration of hepatic changes was noted in the treatment group after treatment (P < 0.01), which was more significant than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The total symptom score in the treatment group decreased after treatment (P < 0.05) and was lower than that in the control group after treatment (P < 0.05). The response rate was significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group (73.70% vs 66%, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: Chinese herbs plus behavioral intervention can effectively improve fatty infiltration of the liver and relieve symptoms in NAFLD patients.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with dyslipdemia, insulin resistance and non alcoholic fatty liver disease. The purpose of the current study was to assess whether type 2 diabetes mellitus-induced hyperglycemia has an effect on the lipid profile and release of oxidative stress markers and inflammatory mediators in patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease and normal liver function tests which may in turn lead to enhancing the pathogenicity of this liver disease. For this purpose, one hundred and five outpatients, matched in age and weight, were classified into two groups: the first group consisted of patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease and the second group consisted of patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease in conjunction with hyperglycemia due to the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In all patients, lipid profile, oxidative stress, and inflammatory mediators were assessed by measuring serum concentrations of triglycerides, low density lipoprotein, hydrogen preroxide, malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6, respectively. In the studied population, it was found that the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus-induced hyperglycemia significantly impaired lipid profile, and significantly enhanced the formation of hydrogen preroxide and malondialdehyde as well as significantly increased the release of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 in the second group of patients. In addition, plasma glucose level showed significant positive correlation with hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6. From the previous results, it was concluded that the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus-induced hyperglycemia results in significant increase in lipid profile, oxidative stress markers and inflammatory mediators in patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease and normal liver function tests. For this reason, further research studies may be essential to evaluate the benefit of adding suitable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drugs to the treatment regimen for this group of patients. In addition, regular monitoring of blood glucose levels and liver function tests should be advised to this category of patients to reduce liver fat deposition and avoid the development of non alcoholic steatohepatitis, cirrhosis or liver cancer and their related complications.

Abstract
Hepatic steatosis is considered to have an important impact on liver tumorigenesis, despite a lack of clear experimental evidence. Histopathological analysis of H-ras12V transgenic mice showed liver lesions on a steatosis background had significantly higher incidence than on a non-steatosis background. Further investigation showed that apolipoprotein A-I was elevated and accumulated around fatty vacuoles. This elevated level of apolipoprotein A-I was coupled with an elevated level of H-ras12V protein and ROS. In conclusion, our results suggest that the expression of H-ras12V oncogene leads to elevated levels of ROS and apolipoprotein A-I that contribute to steatosis. The steatosis, in turn, promotes the development of hepatic lesions induced by H-ras12V oncogene.

Abstract
AIM Hepatic steatosis affects up to 30% of the population. After weight loss, monitoring of the change in hepatic steatosis is not routinely performed. This study aimed to define the closest associates of change in liver fat content in a population of obese females following laparoscopic gastric banding surgery. METHODS Before and 3 months after surgery, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging were used to estimate the amount of lipid contained within the liver and abdominal subcutaneous and visceral compartments of 29 obese [mean body mass index (BMI) 39 +/- 5 kg/m(2)], non-diabetic women aged between 20 and 62 years. Liver enzymes, fasting plasma glucose and insulin were also measured as well as body weight, BMI and waist circumference. Insulin sensitivity was estimated using homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance index. RESULTS Significant reductions occurred in body weight (p < 0.001), abdominal fat volumes (p < 0.001) and liver fat (p = 0.037) 3 months after surgery. Change in liver fat content more closely associated with change in serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT; r = 0.71, p < 0.001) than with changes in weight (r = 0.10, p = 0.612) and waist circumference (r = 0.15, p = 0.468). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that obese non-diabetic female patients who have undergone significant weight loss over 3 months can be better assessed for the regression of excess liver fat content by monitoring changes in serum GGT levels rather than changes in simple anthropometry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We presumed that identification of the factors associated with improvement of fatty livers disease (FLD) would support the therapeutic options for FLD. The goal of this study was to clarify what clinical characteristics are associated with biochemical and sonographic improvements in the non-alcoholic population with fatty livers. METHODS A total of 615 non-alcoholic men had elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (> or = 40 IU/L) levels and sonographic evidence of a fatty liver, and their clinical characteristics were assessed at the beginning of the study and after 1 year of follow up. The improvement was defined as combination of normal ALT level and negative sonography for hepatic fat after 1 year. Programmed intervention or medications were not applied in this study population. RESULTS The overall rate of improvement of FLD after a 1-year follow up was 37/615 (6.0%). The improvement was strongly associated with decrement of changes in bodyweight, body mass index, waist circumference, gamma-glutamyltransferase, fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and homeostasis model assessment. Multivariate analysis showed that decrement of changes in bodyweight (odds ratio (OR) = 1.56; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.27-1.92) per 1 kg, body mass index (OR = 2.42; 95%CI: 1.58-3.71) per 1 SD (0.8 kg/m2), waist circumference (OR = 2.13; 95%CI: 1.02-4.54) per 1 cm, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR = 1.64; 95%CI: 1.05-2.56) per 1 SD (22 mg/dL) were all independent predictors for improvement of FLD. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the reduction of bodyweight is a major key point for the improvement of FLD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of anthropometric indexes (body mass index and waist circumference) in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and its association with insulin resistance (IR), metabolic syndrome (MS) and histological findings. METHODS From August 2003 to July 2004 a case series of 81 outpatients with clinic and/or histological diagnosis of NAFLD were selected at the Bahia University Gastro-Hepatology Clinic, Brazil. Liver function tests, lipid profile, glucose and insulin were performed in all patients. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were determined according to WHO criteria. IR was measured by means of the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) and IR was considered with HOMA > or =3. MS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). Liver biopsy was performed in 37 cases. RESULTS Body mass index > or = 30 kg m(-2) (obesity) was found in 39% of the cases and BMI > or = 25-29.9 kg m(-2) (overweight) in 53%. BMI was correlated with IR (r = 0.29; P = 0.02) and WC with ALT (r = 0.02; P = 0.03). Increased WC also was related to IR and to MS. The presence of steatohepatitis with fibrosis on liver biopsy was associated with overweight (68%) and increase of WC (41%). CONCLUSIONS Body mass index and WC are frequent associated with MS, IR and histological findings (steatohepatitis and fibrosis) in patients with NAFLD.

Abstract
It is generally thought that histone deacetylases (HDACs) play important roles in the transcriptional regulation of genes. However, little information is available concerning the specific functions of individual HDACs in disease states. In this study, two transgenic mice lines were established which harbored the human HDAC1 gene. Overexpressed HDAC1 was detected in the nuclei of transgenic liver cells, and HDAC1 enzymatic activity was significantly higher in the transgenic mice than in control littermates. The HDAC1 transgenic mice exhibited a high incidence of hepatic steatosis and nuclear pleomorphism. Molecular studies showed that HDAC1 may contribute to nuclear pleomorphism through the p53/p21 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Islet transplantation represents a most impressive recent advance in the search for a type 1 diabetes mellitus cure. While several hundred patients have achieved at least temporary insulin independence after receiving the islet "mini-organs" (containing insulin-producing beta cells), very few patients remain insulin independent beyond 4 years after transplantation. In this review, we describe historic as well as technical details about the procedure and provide insight into clinical and basic research efforts to overcome existing hurdles for this promising therapy.

Abstract
Islet transplantation represents a most impressive recent advance in the search for a type 1 diabetes mellitus cure. While several hundred patients have achieved at least temporary insulin independence after receiving the islet "mini-organs" (containing insulin-producing beta cells), very few patients remain insulin independent beyond 4 years after transplantation. In this review, we describe historic as well as technical details about the procedure and provide insight into clinical and basic research efforts to overcome existing hurdles for this promising therapy.
