Abstract
BACKGROUND The sedentary aspects of many U.S. occupations and the amount of time American workers spend in the workplace make it an ideal location to implement health promotion programs. METHODS This study assessed the effectiveness of a free smartphone app with a goal-setting feature to increase physical activity (PA) and impact anthropometric, body mass (BM), and body composition (BC) changes among overweight and obese women within a community health workforce. Eighteen overweight and obese (body mass index [BMI] = 32.18 ± 4.48 kg/m2), adult (50.73 ± 8.76 years), female volunteers, tracked daily steps with a free smartphone app (StridekickTM) over an 8-week period. Pre- and post-program body composition (BC) measurements included: relative (%) body fat (BF), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), and lean mass (LM), using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA scan), and five anthropometric measurements (biceps, waist, abdomen, hips, and thigh). FINDINGS Pre- to post-program average daily steps resulted in significant anthropometric changes for biceps, hips, and thigh measures, with encouraging changes in FFM, LM, and relative (%) BF. The goal-setting feature of the app did not result in significant differences between the experimental and control groups. No differences were noted in FM, BMI, waist, and abdomen or step goals compared with steps completed. CONCLUSIONS An occupational PA health promotion intervention program that tracked daily steps through the StridekickTM smartphone app resulted in anthropometric, BM, and BC changes. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE The workplace is an ideal location to affect change in health behaviors via a free smartphone app to increase PA and improve health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Menopausal women should learn self-care practices to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, positive health behaviors, and health status. In addition, the lack of self-care knowledge can lead to unhealthy attitudes and lifestyles, resulting in many complications. Improved self-care knowledge can foster positive attitudes, leading to healthier lifestyles as a beneficial cycle. However, menopausal women have limited knowledge about self-care and evaluation tools. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and investigate the validity and reliability of the Women's Self-care Knowledge and Attitude Questionnaire (WSKAQ) in Iranian menopausal women. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 249 menopausal women, aged between 45 and 65 years and at least one year post-menopause, with a minimum literacy level of elementary education. Validation properties included construct validity, exploratory (EFA), and discriminant validity. Reliability was further established through Cronbach's α and McDonald's Omega. PASS 15 and SPSS 27 software were used to select centers, calculate sample size and analyze the data, respectively. RESULTS The initial stage of construct validity involved the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and EFA, resulting in a 6-item self-care knowledge subscale, 47.29% of the total data variance, and 7-item self-care attitude subscale, 55.50% of the total data variance. Independent t-test indicated that menopausal women with education level equal to or higher than diploma have significantly higher self-care attitude scores than those with lower than diploma (p = 0.007). Additionally, significant correlations were observed between self-care knowledge and attitude (r:0.30). Cronbach's α and McDonald's Omega coefficients of the 13-item WSKAQ were 0.77 and 0.78, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Based on the results, the WSKAQ, consisting of 13 items, was validated and reliable for assessing the self-care knowledge and attitude of Iranian menopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses working in palliative and end-of-life care settings face significant emotional challenges due to the demanding nature of their profession. This study aimed to explore the emotional resilience of these nurses, understanding the factors that contribute to their resilience, the impact on their professional well-being and performance, and strategies to enhance resilience. METHODS A qualitative study was conducted involving 15 registered nurses from various healthcare facilities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and observational data. Thematic analysis was employed to identify recurring themes. RESULTS The study identified three key themes: Emotional Challenges and Resilience-Building, Support Systems and Resources for Resilience, and Professional Growth and Fulfillment as Resilience Factors. The findings revealed the emotional toll of patient suffering, highlighting resilience-building strategies, such as peer support, mindfulness, and reflective practices. Support systems, including workplace support, organizational resources, and mentorship, were identified as crucial for fostering resilience. Professional growth, a sense of purpose, and recognition emerged as factors contributing to resilience. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores the importance of emotional resilience for nurses in palliative and end-of-life care settings. Healthcare organizations can enhance resilience by implementing resilience training, providing counseling services, fostering a supportive culture, and offering professional development opportunities. Addressing the emotional needs of nurses is vital for their well-being and the delivery of compassionate care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the crucial role of mindfulness and self-care in nurses' physical and mental health, as well as their professional well-being, most nurses exhibit low levels of self-care. Moreover, there is a lack of understanding of the diverse subgroups of mindful self-care among nurses. OBJECTIVES The present study delved into the diverse groups of mindful self-care among nurses and investigated the correlation between these groups and their mental health. METHODS Convenience sampling was used to select nurses from Guizhou province, China, from August to September 2023. A total of 1020 nurses were investigated, and 1001 questionnaires were included, for an effective return rate of 98.1%. The demographic characteristics questionnaire, Chinese version of the Brief Mindful Self-Care Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 and Perceived Stress Scale were used. Latent profile analysis was performed on the characteristics of nurses' mindful self-care, and the correlations between the latent profiles, demographic characteristics and mental well-being were identified using chi-square tests, Spearman correlation analyses and non-parametric tests. RESULTS A total of 1001 nurses were included, and they were divided into four heterogeneous subgroups: the Inconsistent Mindful Self-Care Group (4.40%), Balanced Development Group (43.36%), Moderate Mindful Self-Care Group (39.36%), and High Mindful Self-Care Group (12.89%). Results of single factor analysis showed that the nurses' department and average monthly income were the factors influencing the potential profiles. Mindful self-care negatively correlated with anxiety and depression but was not correlated with perceived stress. There were significant differences in perceived stress, anxiety and depression between different mindful self-care groups. CONCLUSION The present study used latent profile analysis to identify four distinct subgroups of hospital nurses based on their mindful self-care and revealed varying levels of anxiety, depression and perceived stress between groups. These results emphasise the need for tailored mindful self-care strategies to promote nurses' well-being.

Abstract
THE AIM To explore and describe workplace stress levels and health-promoting behaviours reported by emergency nurses in China, and to investigate factors associated with workplace stress and health-promoting lifestyle behaviours among emergency nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2019 and January 2020. Nurses (n = 1565) were recruited from the emergency departments of 54 hospitals within the Sichuan Province of West China. Each subject completed the Chinese versions of the Nurse Workplace Stress Scale, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP-II) and demographic questions. Linear regression analyses were used to identify associations between workplace stress and the health-promoting lifestyle and risk factors correlated with these two measurements. RESULTS Workplace stress was negatively associated with health-promoting behaviours. Linear regression analysis showed that gender, marital status, whether wages met expected standards and professional rank were found to be associated with health promotion behaviours; marital status, whether income met expected standards, the number of night shifts per month and health promotion behaviours were found to be associated with workplace stress. CONCLUSION Higher levels of workplace stress are associated with lower levels of engagement in health-promoting behaviours, suggesting the potential for reducing workplace stress through the adoption of healthier habits. Policies should prioritize workplace stress by promoting healthy lifestyle initiatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sedentary aspects of work have been associated with increased health risks. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of high intensity interval training (HIIT) and increased steps on anthropometric, body mass, and body composition changes over a 12-week period. METHODS 12 sedentary, obese, body mass index (BMI) = 32.98 ± 3.21 kg/m2, adult (46.10 ± 9.56 years), females volunteered for the study and were randomly assigned into one of the two groups, the HIIT group and the STEP group. During the 12-week study, all participants' movements were monitored during their workday, via an accelerometer, a Movband™, 5 days/week. FINDINGS The HIIT group (n = 5) engaged in structured exercise (~15.0 ± 3.5 minutes), defined as total body moves which consisted of eight different routines: upper and lower extremity, two cardio segments, two total body, yoga, and abdominal exercises. The STEP group (n = 7) averaged ~7,000 steps/day throughout 12 weeks. Pre- and post-program measurements included: five anthropometric measurements (biceps, waist, abdomen, hips, and thigh), along with body mass and body composition measures: relative (%) body fat via dual x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, fat mass, fat-free mass, and lean mass. CONCLUSIONS Statistical significance was determined among participants for biceps, hips, and thigh measurements along with body mass and body composition changes for improved health. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE This work is suggestive that a physical activity intervention integrated into the workplace via work processes and/or structured exercise is supportive in reducing anthropometric and body composition measurements, while changing body mass, to increase health and reduce obesity-related chronic disease risks in sedentary women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although knowledge of the barriers and motivators to physical activity participation among nurses is increasing, the factors influencing motivation methods' effectiveness are not completely defined. This study aimed to identify the methods that support increasing the level of daily physical activity and the factors that influence the effectiveness of motivation methods among nurses. METHODS This study was based on an intervention study protocol. All registered nurses in clinical settings were invited to participate in the study. The study involved 71 professionally active nurses. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic and employment data. The level of physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and the daily number of steps was assessed using a pedometer. Body composition was measured using a bioimpedance method, and the 5-year risk of cardiovascular events was assessed using the Harvard Score. The intervention included self-monitoring daily steps using a pedometer and completing a diary daily for one month. Additionally, a few-minute speech was sent to each participant via email on the intervention's 7th, 14th, and 21st days. RESULTS The analysis revealed a higher value of physical activity recorded in the follow-up compared to the initial and final measurement in the Recreation domain [Met] (p < 0.001) and a higher value of daily steps in the follow-up compared to the final measurement (p = 0.005). Participants with a higher Harvard Score were more likely to increase their daily number of steps (OR = 6.025; 95% CI = 1.70-21.41), and nurses working in hospital wards were less likely to do so (OR = 0.002; 95% CI = 0.00-0.41). CONCLUSIONS Recommendations for physical activity in the nursing population should focus on increasing leisure time physical activity and regular risk assessment of cardiovascular events. A mixed methods approach, such as feedback enhanced by health coaching, effectively achieves long-term physical activity changes in nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnant nurses are at high risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and nurses diagnosed with GDM face challenges in balancing disease management and work, which affects maternal and child health and the quality of care. GDM requires significant changes to lifestyle and physical activity to control blood glucose levels, which is key to reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, few studies have focused on the experiences of pregnant nurses with GDM. This study aimed to gain insight into the experiences of pregnant nurses with GDM in China in terms of their illness, work burdens, and self-care. METHODS This qualitative study used an interpretative phenomenological analysis. Face-to-face semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with pregnant nurses with GDM to investigate their experiences and self-care. The study was performed at Chongqing's maternal and child health hospital in China. A purposive sampling was used. Nine pregnant nurses diagnosed with GDM were recruited and interviewed. RESULTS The interview data generated four themes and 11 sub-themes. The four themes were 'the perceptions and feelings of GDM', 'experiences of lifestyle changes', 'social support needs', and 'health expectations and risk perception.' CONCLUSION Many factors such as the unique occupational environment, overwork, occupational pressure, shift work, family status, and education level may lead to difficulties in managing blood glucose in nurses with GDM. These findings suggest that managers should pay more attention to nurses with GDM and develop personalized medical care and work arrangements. These measures can improve the self-care and well-being of nurses with GDM and promote the health of nurses and their offspring.

Abstract
Introduction Nurses, who care for patients with various traumas, may also experience post-traumatic stress disorder due to indirect or direct exposure to traumatic situations. This study examined the effectiveness of an Internet-based trauma recovery intervention for Korean nurses. Methods This randomized controlled trial was conducted with 112 nurses aged 23-40 years who were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 56) or control group (n = 56) from May 7 to December 20, 2020. Nurses in the intervention group attended eight sessions, and the same intervention was administered to the control group. Repeated measures were collected at pre-test, post-test 1 (immediately after the intervention), and post-test 2 (4 weeks after the intervention). A total of 102 nurses (intervention group: n = 49; control group: n = 53) were completed because 10 nurses dropped out before the first session. Data were analyzed using the χ2 test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and repeated measures ANOVA (intention-to-treat and per protocol). Results There were significant changes in functional health, resilience, post-traumatic stress, depressive symptoms, state anxiety, and trait anxiety over time and in the group-by-time interactions (intention-to-treat and per protocol). There was a significant difference in social support in the group-by-time interactions, but there were no significant changes between the two groups or over time (intention-to-treat and per protocol). Conclusion The Internet-based trauma recovery nursing intervention is effective in clinical and community settings for nurses who cannot participate in fixed-schedule programs due to shift work. This study's findings are relevant for implementing Internet-based trauma recovery programs for nurses and the general population, including survivors and relatives of patients who suffered from COVID-19. This program will also be very useful for people in other high-stress situations. Nurse leaders should consider different populations and situations when offering effective coping strategies suitable for changing environments.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore intensive care unit (ICU) nurses' experience of developing spiritual self to meet the significant spiritual and existential needs of patients and their families. A qualitative descriptive method with directed content analysis guided by Watson's Theory of Human Caring was utilized. From a sample of 10 ICU nurses, 3 main themes were described. The themes articulate ICU nurses' experience of personal spiritual growth as influenced by their work environment and the need for continued development of spiritual self to support their clinical role.

Abstract
Introduction Staff turnover is a major obstacle to the success of Saudi Arabia's health transformation agenda and the realization of Saudi Vision 2030. Nurses' and midwives' intentions to remain with the organization are heavily influenced by their sense of structural empowerment and resilience. Objectives To gain insight into the perspectives of nurses and midwives working in the Obstetrics and Gynecology departments of a selection of Saudi Arabian governmental hospitals about structural empowerment, resilience, and intentions to stay in their current positions. Methods Qualitative Descriptive Phenomenology. Purposive sampling was used to choose eighteen nurses and midwives working in the OB/GYN department in three government hospitals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather the participants' perceptions. Colaizzi's steps were used as a data analysis method. Results The narratives of the selected participants generated five major themes: (a) "nurturing physical and physiological," (b) "developing psychological," (c) "managing financial," (e) "restructuring organizational," and (f) "enriching professional and occupational." Conclusions The emerging major themes highlighted the perceptive elements of nurses and midwives that keep them empowered, resilient, and determined to stay in their organization. A failure to fulfill any one of these elements will affect the others. To improve organizational outcomes, empowerment and resilience must be obtained.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking is harmful, which has become a major public health burden. Physical activity may be related to smoking. Physical activity is one of the current methods for smoking control and smoking cessation. Different types of physical activity may have different effect on smoking behavior. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to identify the direction and extent of the impact of different types of physical activity above moderate intensity (including work physical activity, recreational physical activity, commuter physical activity and sedentary behavior) on smoking behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, a total of 2,015 individuals (1,233 males and 782 females, mean age 54.02±17.31 years) was selected from the representative population aged 20 and above in the National Health and Nutrition Survey of the United States from 2017 to 2018. Physical activity was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) ; the tobacco use questionnaire (SMQ) was used to determine whether the sample had smoking behavior at this stage. Binary Logistic regression analysis was performed with various physical activities as independent variables and smoking behavior as dependent variables. All data were analyzed through Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) 26.0. RESULTS After adjusted for all confounding variables, physical activity at work was close to significantly associated with smoking behavior (P=0.053), odds ratio (OR) =1.135 (95%Cl: 0.999-1.289). Recreational physical activity was significantly associated with smoking behavior (P < 0.001), OR=0.729 (95%Cl: 0.639-0.832). Commuting physical activity was significantly associated with smoking behavior (P < 0.001), OR=1.214 (95%Cl:1.048-1.405). Sedentary behavior was significantly associated with smoking behavior (P < 0.001), OR=1.363 (95%Cl: 1.154-1.611). CONCLUSIONS Given that different types of physical activity have different associations with smoking behavior. Therefore, when physical activity is used as a tobacco control measurement, it is necessary to pay attention to the type and environment of physical activity. Recreational physical activities should be appropriately increased, sedentary behavior should be reduced, and smoking prohibit environment should be expanded as far as possible to achieve better clinical intervention effects.

Abstract
Background and Aims New nurses are an important part of nursing teams. The failure of new nurses to successfully transition seriously affects personal career development and nursing work quality, and important influencing factors deserve the attention of nursing managers. At present, multicenter, large-sample investigations of transition shock among new nurses are lacking in China. This study aims to investigate the current level and influencing factors of transition shock among new nurses in China. Methods We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional study with 3414 new nurses from 16 provinces in 7 regions in China from October 22, 2021, to November 8, 2021. We used the snowball sampling method and an online questionnaire produced by the researchers to collect data; the questionnaire included questions on demographic information, a transition shock scale for new nurses and open-ended questions. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 24. Results The effective response rate of this study was 97.89%, with 3342 effective participants from 189 hospitals in China, most of whom were female (94.88%). The study showed that the transition shock of new nurses in China was at a moderate level, with pre-job anxiety, unsatisfactory welfare treatment, resignation intention, adverse events, poor sleep quality, 1 or fewer exercise sessions per week, inability to balance work and life, and gluttony negatively affecting the transition shock of new nurses in China. Psychological shock was the strongest among the four dimensions of transition shock. Conclusions The transition shock of new nurses, especially their psychological shock, deserves more attention from international society. Nursing managers should continue to take supportive measures to intervene in the factors influencing transition shock, with the aim of reducing the level of transition for new nurses, promoting their personal thriving, improving the quality of nursing work and increasing the retention rate of nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have reported the prevalence of overweight and obesity in various countries but the global prevalence of nurses with overweight and obesity remains unclear. A consolidation of figures globally can help stakeholders worldwide improve workforce development and healthcare service delivery. OBJECTIVE To investigate the global prevalence of overweight and obesity among nurses. DESIGN Systematic review with meta-analysis. SETTING 29 different countries across the WHO-classified geographical region. PARTICIPANTS Nurses. METHODS Eight electronic databases were searched for articles published from inception to January 2023. Two independent reviewers performed the article screening, methodological appraisal and data extraction. Methodological appraisal was conducted using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Inter-rater agreement was measured using Cohen's Kappa. Meta-analyses were conducted to pool the effect sizes on overweight, obesity and waist circumference using random effects model and adjusted using generalised linear mixed models and Hartung-Knapp method. Logit transformation was employed to stabilise the prevalence variance. Subgroup analyses were performed based on methodological quality and geographical regions. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. RESULTS Among 10,587 studies, 83 studies representing 158,775 nurses across 29 countries were included. Based on BMI, the global prevalence of overweight and obesity were 31.2% (n = 55, 95% CI: 29%-33.5%; p < .01) and 16.3% (n = 76, 95% CI: 13.7%-19.3%, p < .01), respectively. Subgroup analyses indicated that the highest prevalence of overweight was in Eastern Mediterranean (n = 9, 37.2%, 95% CI: 33.1%-41.4%) and that of obesity was in South-East Asia (n = 5, 26.4%, 95% CI: 5.3%-69.9%). NOS classification, NOS scores, sample size and the year of data collected were not significant moderators. CONCLUSIONS This review indicated the global prevalence of overweight and obesity among nurses along with the differences between regions. Healthcare organisations and policymakers should appreciate this increased risk and improve working conditions and environments for nurses to better maintain their metabolic health. Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses are a high-risk group for overweight and obesity due to high stress, low-labor medical work, irregular diet, and lack of exercise. There is scarce information on relationship between job characteristics and overweight and obesity among nurses. This study aimed to answer the question. Does the nature of the work including job position, seniority relate to overweight and obesity among nurses? Their incidence was also investigated. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of nurses who underwent annual checkups during 2007 to 2016 in a medical center. Overweight was defined as a body mass index between 24 and 27 kg/m 2 . Obesity was defined as a body mass index higher than 27 kg/m 2 . We calculated the prevalence and incidence of overweight and obesity and estimated relative risks using logistic regression. RESULTS Overall, 4253 participants were enrolled for the incidence of overweight and obesity. We found that junior staff, administrative directors, working in intensive care units, and old age had a high possibility of overweight. Junior staff, administrative directors, old age, and male sex tend to be obesity. Overweight and obesity occurred rapidly in the first 2 years of their career. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that policies should be set up to achieve the goal of workplace health promotion. Health plans focusing on these factors may help nurses avoid obesity and overweight. The director of the hospital should keep track of the health checkup database to confirm the benefits of its long-term implementation.

Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed nurses to more stress and inability to practice self-care activities. These have resulted in conditions that threaten their health, well-being, and ability to work. Nurses' lack of self-care can predispose them to chronic health conditions and staff burnout which may adversely affect patient care. The panacea for this concern is a deliberate effort to promote holistic health and wellbeing through self-care activities targeted towards physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects of nurses. The purpose of this study was to explore factors influencing self-care practices among registered nurses during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Convenience sampling was used to select 294 nurses from four urban hospitals in Kingston Jamaica. A questionnaire was utilized for data collection. Logistical regression analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 22.0. Ethical approval was obtained. Results: The response rate was 46% (Out of 294 questionnaires distributed, only 136 were returned). Although 93% of participants engage in self-care activities during COVID-19 pandemic, only 45% practiced self-care on a daily basis. Half of the participants (50%) practiced self care activities sometimes while 5% do not engage in self care practices. Activities that promote psychological and social wellbeing were not common among participants. Most self care activities were towards the promotion of physical health and wellbeing. Majority of respondents indicated that excess workload, fatigue, lack of time and poor remuneration are factors that prevent their practice of self-care. Findings also revealed that demographic data such as age, sex, income, gender and ethnic background influences self-care practices among nurses. Conclusion: The practice of self care among nurses needs improvements. Although respondents engage in some activities to care for self, majority are not consistent with this practice.

Abstract
The workers of the health sector are important to the country's economy in many ways. Healthy and rested workers are highly valuable to the public health sector and give a good perception of their work to patients and society. It is thus important to have a sufficient number of healthy working staff in healthcare institutions who do not have work fatigue and burnout. A total of 987 employees-doctors, professional staff, and others-of a large healthcare institution in Hungary voluntarily participated in a survey regarding their lifestyle and physical activity habits and answered the questions anonymously. Women reported less leisure time (p < 0.02), with 54.9% of female respondents saying that they did not exercise regularly, and fatigue was more common among them (p < 0.001). In this respect, the healthcare workers' responses did not differ from those of the overall population. The most common sports were cycling (17.7%), running (15.4%), and working out in a gym (12.3%). Reasons for not participating in sports included lack of time (70.2%) and fatigue (43.9%) as the most frequent responses. Healthcare workers are exposed to a number of risks that require particular attention to maintain their health. Employers should thus focus on implementing programs that prevent burnout and promote healthy lifestyles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Practicing self-care is a requisite for nurses as they face the extreme physical, mental, and emotional challenges presented by the pandemic era. This study aimed to examine factors that contribute to self-care-self-regulation (SCSR) and investigate the mediation effect of psychological and physical health in the relationship between work stress and SCSR among registered nurses in the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on the data collected from 386 registered nurses who completed an online survey over a 3-week period during the COVID-19 pandemic (April 19 to May 6, 2020). The survey assessed demographic and work-related characteristics, work stress, depressive mood, self-rated health, and SCSR. The model was tested with depressive mood as the first mediator and self-rated health as the second mediator. The potential serial mediation effect was analyzed using PROCESS macros adjusting for covariates. RESULTS The sequential indirect effect of work stress on SCSR through depressive mood and self-rated health in series was significant, while its direct effect was not. CONCLUSION The findings of the path analysis demonstrate that psychological and physical health status is important to promote self-care behaviors when nurses experience high work stress.

Abstract
Role modelling communicates a standard of behavior to another person. Silent role modelling occurs when this standard can be communicated without articulating reasons for the action; articulate role modelling occurs when it is necessary to articulate reasons in order to effectively role model the standard of behavior, and to avoid misinterpretation. Nurses are role models in virtue of the respect and admiration given to the nursing profession. As such, nurses have role model obligations. This paper examines nurses' role model obligations for healthy behaviors and pandemic precautions. Research often identifies nurses as role models for healthy behavior, despite the fact that nurses are typically no healthier than the general population. This paper argues that nurses do not have a duty to role model healthy behaviors. The ability to adopt healthy behaviors is affected by numerous personal and individual factors. For a nurse to share their struggles to adopt healthy behaviors as articulate 'imperfect' role models violates their right to privacy. By contrast, nurses do have a moral duty to role model pandemic precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as correctly wearing appropriate masks, maintaining social distancing, avoiding gatherings of multiple households when pandemic precautions are not being taken, and staying up to date on vaccination. Nurses' duty to role model pandemic precautions does not involve sharing any personal information. Nurses have a duty to be silent role models when the risk of misinterpretation is low, and a duty to be articulate role models, who explicitly communicate reasons for the role modelled behavior, when necessary to ensure they are not misinterpreted. When articulate role modelling goes beyond the minimal role modelling duty, and imposes a comparative cost to the nurse, articulate role modelling is not obligatory, but supererogatory.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social support has a vital role in preventing traumatic stress in nurses. Nurses are regularly exposed to contact with violence, suffering, and death. The situation worsened during the pandemic because they were also faced with the possibility of infection SARS-CoV-2 and death from COVID-19. Many nurses are faced with increased pressure, stress, and other adverse effects on their mental health. The study aimed to measure the relationship between compassion fatigue and perceived social support in polish nurses. METHODS The study was conducted on 862 professionally active nurses in Poland using the CAWI method (Computer-Assisted Web Interview). The professional Quality of Life scale (ProQOL) and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were used for collecting the data. StatSoft, Inc. (2014) was used for data analysis. For comparisons between the groups: Mann-Whitney U test, ANOVA Kruskal-Wallis test, and multiple comparisons (post-hoc). The relationships between variables were tested using Spearman's rho, Tau Kendall, and the chi-square test. RESULTS The research showed the presence of compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and burnout in the group of Polish hospital nurses. A higher level of perceived social support was associated with lower compassion fatigue (r = -0.35; p < 0.001). A higher level of social support was associated with higher job satisfaction (r = 0.40; p < 0.001). The study also found that a higher level of social support was associated with a lower risk of burnout (r = -0.41; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Preventing compassion fatigue and burnout should be a priority for healthcare managers. Notably, an essential predictor of compassion fatigue is that Polish nurses often work overtime. It is necessary to pay more attention to the crucial role of social support in preventing compassion fatigue and burnout.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses are the largest health professional body globally. Despite the significant role they play in healthcare, nurses exhibit poor dietary habits and have high rates of chronic diseases. Understanding the factors underlying healthy eating for nurses in the workplace is important to implement effective interventions. OBJECTIVE To identify enablers and barriers related to healthy eating among nurses employed in a hospital setting. DESIGN A systematic literature review of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research (PROSPERO ID: CRD42021290913). DATA SOURCES A comprehensive systematic search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science and ProQuest databases for papers published after January 2015. METHODS Two authors independently screened titles and abstracts of 4139 deduplicated studies, performed critical appraisals on eligible studies using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and extracted data relevant to the research question. This review includes papers that examined nurses' eating behaviours specifically, were conducted in a hospital setting and distinguished healthy eating from other behaviours. Data synthesis was conducted through descriptive summarisation of studies and enablers and barriers were classified according to the socio-ecological model. RESULTS A total of 29 studies were identified with 8024 participants. 8 studies were qualitative, 18 quantitative, and 3 were mixed method design. At an environmental level, barriers were high accessibility and availability of unhealthy foods, high cost and low availability of healthy foods and lack of storage and preparation facilities, while an enabler was close proximity to healthy options. Novel organisational enablers were considered roster planning which allowed for established routines around meals, and structured workplace programs that encouraged improvement in health behaviours, while barriers were shift work, inconsistent rosters and high work demands. An interpersonal enabler was supportive networks while barriers were work culture, social norms of celebrations and gifts of food from patients. Finally, intrapersonal barriers were stress and fatigue, personal values, beliefs, attitudes, and individual characteristics, with the latter two also acting as enablers. CONCLUSIONS This review identifies the complexity and interconnectedness of enablers and barriers to healthy eating across four domains of the socio-ecological model. Multi-faceted strategies which address factors across several domains are recommended for healthcare organisations to facilitate healthy eating among nurses. Further research is needed to assess these strategies and understand the extent to which eating behaviours can be improved.

Abstract
Introduction Sedentary work is associated with poor health outcomes. Many healthcare occupations, including office-based care coordination, are largely sedentary. Many nurses do not achieve the recommended levels of daily physical activity, however, the physical activity levels among nurses working in care coordination are not known. Objective To assess the physical activity levels, self-reported health and well-being, overall quality of life, and work-related satisfaction of office-based care coordinators, and compare these among nursing and non-nursing staff. Methods This study collected objective physical activity data using accelerometry along with self-reported information on work-related quality of life and satisfaction from 42 healthcare staff working in a hospital-affiliated office-based care coordination program. Results were compared among nursing and non-nursing staff. Results Nurses had lower moderate-to-vigorous physical activity levels compared to non-nursing staff (25 min/day vs. 45, p = .007). There were no differences in daily sedentary time, light activity, or steps between nursing and non-nursing staff. Nurses reported high quality of life scores compared to non-nursing staff (4.4 vs. 4.1, p = .02), but similar levels of work-related quality of life, happiness, self-rated health, and well-being. Conclusion Nurses working in an office-based care coordination program had lower levels of physical activity but reported a higher overall quality of life than non-nurse work colleagues working in a similar environment. Given known health risks associated with sedentary occupational work and the growing number of care coordination programs, health policies and initiatives aimed at increasing the physical activity levels of care coordination workers is of prime importance.

Abstract
It is important to integrate knowledge about the need for physical activities (PA) in the prevention and care of human health in nursing study programs so that nurses can promote PA among their patients. This study aims to evaluate the PA habits of Latvian nursing students. Participants were students of three universities in Latvia who were enrolled in a four-year bachelor study program, "Nursing", with a total of 341 after the data cleaning (population size n = 1554). The questionnaire contained questions about sociodemographic variables derived from the survey of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control of Latvia "Health Behaviour among Latvian Adult Population", habits of PA, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form. The data were collected between September and November 2021. Both descriptive and inferential statistics (difference between groups, correlation, and association tests) were calculated to analyse the data. Of the study population, 39% did not reach the minimum WHO-recommended PA. Increased PA level in the later study years is related to more frequent engagement in work and fewer table activities in the curriculum study process, but the higher intensity and total PA could be related to the specifics of nurse and nurse assistant work, which could be especially intense due to the overloaded health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
AIMS This study assessed the feasibility of delivering three good things (3GTs) practice as part of professional nurse residency program, measured the degree to which it influenced work-life balance, resilience, and burnout, and explored what newly licensed nurses (NLRNs) identified as good things. BACKGROUND Burnout occurs in response to chronic work-related emotional and interpersonal stress, negatively impacting nurses and patients. However, research shows that 3GT practice can increase positive emotions, enhance resilience, and reduce burnout. METHODS In this study, 3GT was introduced to a convenience sample of 115 NLRNs during their professional residency program. For 14 days, participants received daily 3GT prompts. Individualized survey links were sent via SMS message at baseline, postsurvey (T1), and 6 months (T2). Survey data were collected about work-life balance, burnout, and resilience, and text data from participants' daily 3GT notations from March through November 2021. RESULTS Seventy-one participants were recruited. T1 survey results indicated significant improvements in survey measures but only emotional recovery improvement was sustained at T2. Burnout was the only variable that correlated to participants' number of 3GT days practice. Simple joys, reflections about work, self-care activities, and relationships were major identified themes. CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrate the generalizability, value, and feasibility of implementing a web-based 3GT intervention in a nurse residency program. Additional benefits may be those gained by the reflection that is prompted, thereby facilitating professional development among NLRNs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-care is essential, but while professional nurses often pay attention to the health of their patients, they give little heed to their own well-being. With the current pandemic continuing to negatively affect the world, the need for health professionals to make time for self-care is imperative. The concept "self-care" is not a new phenomenon; however, this study strives to show the importance of self-care practices in the world of nurses and its benefit for the nursing profession. The reality for nurses taking care of themselves will assist them in providing consistent quality care for their patients. METHOD A qualitative approach with a descriptive, phenomenological, contextual method was used in this study. Ten professional nurses employed within different primary healthcare clinics were selected through purposeful sampling. Through in-depth, individual interviews, the professional nurses shared their lived experiences with self-care practices while being employed within a primary healthcare clinic. The recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and then analyzed using Colaizzi's method. RESULTS The findings revealed: Theme 1: Participants experienced internal and external factors that compromised self-care practices Theme 2: Holistic well-being and the quality of patient care are compromised by self-care neglect Theme 3: Participants experienced the need to take responsibility and accountability to promote self-care practices. RECOMMENDATIONS Specific recommendations were formulated to facilitate professional nurses' empowerment to practise self-care as a lifestyle. These specific recommendations focused on reducing the burden of caring for others to the extent that professional nurses working in primary healthcare settings have nothing left for themselves.

Abstract
This study assessed the physical activities of Mental Health Nurses (MHN) in New Zealand against the 2018 World Health Organization recommended minimum levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The research design was exploratory and descriptive as there were no previous studies about physical activity levels of MHNs in New Zealand. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ, Long Version) which included options for free-text responses. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. A total of 266 participants returned the survey, a response rate of 4%, and a limitation of the study. More than 50% of MHNs reported <150 min of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week for each of the four physical activity domains. When individual physical activity domains were combined, only 10% spent <150 min on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Work-related physical activities were higher for those working in the inpatient area than in community settings. Transport-related physical activities were higher for those working in community settings. Participants registered from 6 to 20 years had more time sitting than other groups. Nurses aged 55 years and above showed the highest total physical activity levels. Moreover, healthcare organizations and nurse leaders need to promote physical activity and provide wellness intervention for their staff. Nurses who are physically active may be more effective in supporting their patients to increase their physical activity.

Abstract
A direct association between health-related quality of life (HQoL) and nutrition remains unclear, although lifestyle habits are known to impact on human health. Thus, the aim of this study was to estimate an association between dietary habits, such as vegetable and fruit consumption, in particular, and HQoL. SF-36 (RAND-SF-36) and the Dietary Habits and Nutrition Beliefs Questionnaire (KomPAN) were addressed to Polish pharmacists with a valid professional license. After the preliminary verification, 667 pharmacists were included into the study, and altogether, 11 questions from the KomPAN questionnaire and all RAND-SF-36 multiple choice questions were processed for statistical analysis. All HQoL scores, excluding physical functioning and role-physical, were significantly higher in the group declaring fruit consumption ≥1 time per day (p < 0.005), while physical functioning (p = 0.008) and general health (p = 0.03) were significantly higher in the group declaring vegetable consumption ≥1 time per day. Thus, there is indeed a positive association between vegetable and fruit consumption and HQoL. Increased fruit intake could certainly impact on the health-related quality of life of Polish pharmacists, primarily in terms of mental functioning, while increased vegetable intake could impact in terms of physical functioning.

Abstract
Background: Only comprehensive care and structured education can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of treatment and prepare patients for self-care. Unfortunately, Polish nurses are not ready to perform comprehensive heart failure (HF) care tasks without careful preparation.The purpose of the study was to evaluate nurses’ knowledge of patient education in general and topic-specific perceptions of basic information important for HF self-care, and also to determine the variables (workplace, education, internship) that may affect the implementation of educational tasks in the care of patients with HF. Methods: The study involved 304 nurses who were surveyed using the Nurses’ Knowledge of Heart Failure Education Principles. Results: Cardiology nurses’ knowledge regarding patient education for self-care is insufficient. The overall knowledge score was the highest among nurses in provincial specialist hospitals and university hospitals and the lowest in regional hospitals in small towns (14.98 vs. 14.35 vs. 12.83 vs. 11.89, respectively). Nurses who completed a cardiological specialty demonstrated significantly more extensive knowledge than those who had completed other specialties (15.52 vs. 13.71). Conclusions: Cardiology nurses’ knowledge of HF self-care principles regarding patient education is satisfactory, but not with all mandatory issues, especially in the recognition of disease symptoms, exacerbations, and pharmacotherapy.

Abstract
PurposeLimited evidence exists regarding a group of nurses' physical activity patterns and association with resilience. Less is known about the physical activity health paradox in nurses (the positive health effects of leisure time physical activity vs the negative health effects of occupational physical activity). This study aimed to explore the profiles of intensive care nurses' physical activity behaviours and associations with resilience, following a developed study-specific job demands–recovery framework.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional study was conducted with intensive care unit (ICU) nurses to explore their physical activity profiles and associations with resilience. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 25 (CD-RISC 25) was used to assess resilience, and accelerometry was utilised to record participants' four-day activity (two workdays, two non-workdays). Hierarchical cluster analysis was employed to define groups of nurses by activity behaviours.FindingsParticipants (N = 93) were classified as low actives (n = 19), standers (n = 36), sitters (n = 31) and movers (n = 7). During two 12-h shifts, movers had the highest mean level of dynamic standing and the lowest mean level of sitting. During two non-workdays, movers had the highest mean level of walking as well as the lowest mean level of sitting and sleep time.Originality/valueThe uniqueness of this study was that it analysed ICU nurses' physical activity profiles and associations with resilience using identified clusters. However, the small number of participants limited this study's ability to determine significant relationships between resilience and the grouped physical activity profiles.

BACKGROUND The career education needs of nursing students and professionals can be met by analyzing the differences between the importance and need levels of their various career education needs, determining priorities, and developing a career education program reflecting these. This approach will enable learner-centered customized career education. OBJECTIVES To investigate the differences in career education needs between nursing students and professionals, determine their respective priorities, and assess changes in needs between the two survey periods. DESIGN Descriptive survey study. PARTICIPANTS The first survey (2017) included 206 nursing students and 40 nursing professionals, while the second survey (2020) included 219 nursing students and 100 nursing professionals. METHODS Data for the two surveys were collected through face-to-face, postal, and online questionnaire surveys. The research tool to measure career education needs was developed based on an existing tool, top queries on a website for nursing students' career education, literature review, expert opinions, and in-depth interviews with nursing students. RESULTS The 10 top-ranked items in Jo and Lee's model reflecting the career education needs of nursing students and professionals were as follows: workplace and social etiquette, changes in the healthcare environment and global issues, setting up my career roadmap, interpersonal and communication skills, nursing professionalism and nursing ethics, understanding the latest healthcare policies, my personality type and values, roles and duties of clinical nurses, my aptitude and interest, and nurses' healthcare. Comparing the career education needs of nursing students and professionals between the two survey periods revealed higher scores in the education category of "understanding career" in the second survey. CONCLUSION Nursing students' career awareness and development will be positively affected by a customized career education program based on the priority items derived from this study; such a program will help them attain nursing professionalism and enhance their occupational identity and job satisfaction.

Abstract
Nurses and midwives are integral to public health promotion; in the UK, they are advised to act as role models by their governing body, but overweight or obesity rates are high. We explored whether obesity and dietary habits are related to attitudes towards healthy role modelling and health promotion practice. A total of 346 pre-registered UK nurses and midwives (92.6% female; 18–53 years) completed an online survey. Items included body composition, dietary habits assessed by the Lifestyle Behaviour Questionnaire (LBQ), attitudes towards being role models for health (RA: role attitudes) and attitudes toward health promotion practice (ATHPP): 33.8% of the sample self-reported as overweight or obese; 67.6% did not consume 5-a-day portions of fruit/veg; 31.5% reported a healthy diet; and 89.6% believed their diet could be healthier. Positive RA was significantly linked to health promotion engagement (HP) (ß = 0.33, p < 0.001). Positive ATHPP was significantly predicted by lower BMI (ß = −0.08, p = 0.078), positive RA (ß = 0.67, p < 0.001), lower HP (ß = −0.25, p < 0.001) and male gender (ß = 0.09, p = 0.02). Greater confidence in patients valuing healthcare professional’s advice was predicted by healthier diet (ß = 0.11, p = 0.03), lower BMI (ß = −0. 16, p < 0.01), more positive RA (ß = 0.14, p < 0.01) as well as HP engagement during training (ß = 0.20, p < 0.01). One’s own motivation to promote health, similarly to ATHPP, was predicted by RA (ß = 0.17, p = 0.001) and previous HP engagement (ß = 0.39, p < 0.001). Findings show that overweight and obesity are prevalent in pre-registered nurses and midwives; the majority did not consume a healthy diet. Individual’s body composition, diet and attitudes towards role modelling are positively associated with their attitudes towards, and confidence in, health promotion practice. Experiences of health promotion practice during training can have either a positive or a negative influence on attitudes. Mentors and educators could actively promote healthy lifestyles for pre-registered nurses and midwives and facilitate more opportunities for health promotion practice during placements, which includes time for reflection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses play a core role and encompass the main workforce in health care systems. Their role model of health promoting lifestyle behaviors (HPLB) would directly or indirectly affect their clients' beliefs or attitudes of health promotion. There is limited evidence on HPLB in clinical registered nurses. The current study aimed to explore the HPLB and associated influencing factors among clinical registered nurses in China. METHODS A multi-center cross-sectional anonymous online survey was conducted in 2020. Participants were asked to complete social demographic information as well as the revised Chinese edition of Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP). Independent-Sample T-Test, One-Way ANOVA, and categorical regression (optimal scaling regression) were the main methods to analyze the relationship between demographic data and the score of HPLB. RESULTS 19,422 nurses were included in the study. The mean score of self-actualization, health responsibility/physical activity, nutrition, job safety, interpersonal support, and overall Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile were, 27.61(5.42) out of a score of 36, 22.71(7.77) out of a score of 44, 10.43(2.97) out of a score of 16, 22.05(3.97) out of a score of 28, 20.19(4.67) out of a score of 28, and 102.99 (19.93) out of a score of 144, respectively. There was a significant relationship among Hospital levels, working years, nightshift status, and monthly income per person, and mean score of all subscales and the overall HPLP (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Nurses who participated in the study presented a moderate level of health promoting lifestyle behaviors. Hospital levels, working years, nightshift status, and monthly income per person were predictors for all subscales and overall HPLP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To relate self-reported health symptoms and the impacts of work in terms of physical, social, and psychological illness in nursing professionals. METHOD Cross-sectional, correlational study carried out in a public hospital in the southern region of Brazil. A sample of nursing professionals who worked in direct care participated in the study. A social-occupational questionnaire of self-reported health symptoms and the Work-Related Damage Assessment Scale were used. The analysis was descriptive and analytical. Chi-square test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS A total of 308 professionals participated, with a prevalence of physical illness and higher means for pain in the body, legs and back. Significant relations were identified among the social-occupational variables, health symptoms, and physical, social or psychological illness. High and moderate correlations among the factors investigated were evidenced. CONCLUSION The impact of work on nursing professionals' health is evidenced by the association between self-reported health symptoms and illness, especially the physical or social one, and reinforces the need for professional awareness over situations that are harmful to health.

Abstract
AIMS To verify a hypothesized model of the relationships between compassion fatigue, burnout and compassion satisfaction, as well as their influencing factors and consequences, among emergency nurses. DESIGN A descriptive, cross-sectional design. METHODS A hypothesized model was proposed on the basis of the current literature. A convenience sample was conducted of nurses working in the emergency departments of six hospitals in Shanghai, China, from July to September 2020. A total of 445 valid data points were collected using various self-designed and well-validated instruments. Descriptive statistics and correlations were computed, and a path analysis was used to assess model fitness and to investigate direct and indirect effects. RESULTS The final model reported a desirable fit with significant paths. Compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue directly and inversely affected burnout, and compassion satisfaction positively influenced compassion fatigue. Perceived social support directly improved compassion satisfaction and protected against compassion fatigue. Compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue directly affected mental health, and burnout directly influenced physical health. Compassion fatigue, burnout and compassion satisfaction had complicated effects on turnover intention. CONCLUSION Emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue may be two coexisting constructs, and both affect burnout. Perceived social support acts as a protector of the three dimensions, and their effects on health status and turnover intention can be significant and complicated. IMPACT Emergency nurses may experience high levels of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue simultaneously, which can help to explain why compassion fatigue did not directly increase emergency nurses' turnover intention. The direct effects of compassion fatigue and burnout on emergency nurses' health status and working engagement were significantly different. Support from significant others, professional psychological intervention and emergency nursing system reforms are required to tackle emergency nurses' compassion fatigue and burnout and improve their compassion satisfaction.

Abstract
Aims This study aimed to examine sleep disturbance as a mediator of the relationship between professional quality of life (compassion satisfaction, burnout, secondary traumatic stress) and health (physical and mental health) in nurses. Design Descriptive, cross‐sectional study. Methods Three hundred eighteen Registered Nurses completed a web‐based survey at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in the United States. Mediation analyses were conducted to test hypothesized relationships. Results Nurses with higher levels of compassion satisfaction reported lower levels of sleep disturbance and better physical/mental health. Burnout and secondary traumatic stress were negatively associated with physical/mental health and positively associated with sleep disturbance. Sleep disturbance fully or partially mediated the relationships between professional quality of life and physical/mental health among nurses.

Abstract
Consistent mindful self-care practices mitigate professional burnout and improve resilience to enable nurses provide safe and effective patient care. This study determined the levels and the influencing factors of mindful self-care of nurses in acute care settings. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 258 nurses from seven acute care hospitals using the 36-item Mindful Self-Care Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlation analyses. Nurses' mindful self-care scores were low, and female nurses had higher levels of mindful self-care than male nurses. Statistically significant negative correlations were found between nurses' mindful self-care levels and their age and clinical experience. Nurses' engagement in mindful self-care is low which may negatively affect their interactions with and care of patients and their families. Therefore, a need exists to develop and evaluate more clinical-based personal and organizational strategies to enhance the mindful self-care practices of nurses.

Abstract
Across the world obesity rates in the general population have been increasing in recent years, a trend that has also been seen among nurses. Alongside the negative health effects of obesity such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, the condition affects an individual's ability to work and results in increasing rates of absenteeism. However, the nature of nursing shift patterns and the healthcare workplace itself can influence a nurse's ability to eat healthily. This article discusses how obesity and healthy eating can affect the nursing role, as well as examining leadership and management practices that can support healthy eating in the workplace. The article is aimed at supporting nurse managers to reflect on their own lifestyle behaviour, which in turn will enable them to engage more with the topic of healthy eating among staff.

Abstract
Developing strategies to support student nurses' health is a global priority for healthcare organisations and governments. This is because emerging international evidence indicates that improvements in student nurses' health are required to increase the longevity of careers and reduce the loss of time, skill and financial cost of sickness absence and workforce exit. However, we do not know what intervention strategies student nurses think would support their health. The study aim was to explore student nurses' views on factors that influence health-related behaviours and strategies that could improve health. Data were collected through participatory activities during focus groups with student nurses in Scotland. Analysis was theoretically informed and involved mapping to the Behaviour Change Wheel framework. Students identified several factors that influenced health-related behaviours. Four were ranked most important: knowledge, culture, time constraints, and stress. Strategies student nurses thought should be prioritised to improve nurses' health-related behaviours were: stimulating a health-promoting environment by reviewing shift work, improving workplace support, increasing staffing levels, subsidising and role-modelling of healthy food and exercise; and creating applied health-promoting curricula by integrating time and stress management training and lifestyle advice into nursing education. Educational and environmental interventions are needed to support student nurses' health.

Abstract
Nurses are instrumental in the battle against lifestyle-related diseases, yet nurses may not be participating in their own health-promoting self-care. This study used qualitative content analysis of survey responses to explore nurses' perceptions regarding barriers and facilitators to health-promoting behaviors such as exercise, healthy eating, and participation in stress reduction activities. Seven themes emerged: lack of time/overwork, lack of resources/facilities, fatigue, outside commitments, "unhealthy" food culture, supportive versus unsupportive individuals, and positive versus negative role models. Institutional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal changes are needed to adequately address barriers to nurses' participation in health-promoting behaviors.

Abstract
Maintaining a healthy diet is important for health and longevity. Many diets are recommended for their health-promotion properties. Despite their role in providing health education to patients, nurses do not always maintain healthy diets themselves. The literature shows that a significant number of nurses are overweight or obese. This article reviews the recommended healthy eating guidance and explores why nurses may not always eat healthily. It appears that several characteristics of the nursing role and workplace - notably shift work, fatigue, stress, and suboptimal facilities and availability of healthy foods - make it increasingly challenging for nurses to maintain healthy diets. The article also discusses strategies employers can use to adapt the work environment to support healthy eating.

Abstract
AIM This investigation explored the extent to which nurses' own health is a priority for global National Nursing Associations. BACKGROUND There is a growing body of evidence linking staff health and well-being and key dimensions of service quality, including patient safety, patient experience and the effectiveness of patient care. INTRODUCTION The International Council of Nurses is a federation of more than 130 National Nurses Associations, representing more than 20 million nurses worldwide. Representatives from these Associations attended a Congress in Singapore in 2019 at which a survey was conducted. METHODS A convenience sample of 37 leaders of National Nurse Associations from 33 countries and 61 nurse representatives took part in a survey. RESULTS The majority of nurse leaders and participants believed that nurses' own health should be a priority to be addressed, principally because a healthy nurse is better able to provide good patient care. All of the examples offered about how these Associations address nurses' own health were about actions to prompt individual health behaviour change. DISCUSSION The National Nurses Associations did not have a common terminology to talk about nurses' own health. Taking care of one's own health was included as part of the professional role and most nurse leaders thought that working conditions contributed to ill health. CONCLUSIONS There is widespread agreement that nurses' own health matters but for most National Nurses Associations it is not a current priority. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY Going forward nurse health and wellbeing should be a core principle for health services and professional associations, and additional research is needed that demonstrates if improving working environments contributes to nurse retention and recruitment.

AIM To investigate the presence and impact of self-sacrifice within the nursing profession. BACKGROUND Evidence suggests the existence of a culture of self-sacrifice within nursing, but its potential detriments to the profession have not been explored. DESIGN A qualitative descriptive approach was used. METHODS Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 practicing nurses to explore the existence and potential implications of a self-sacrificing culture within nursing. RESULTS All participants reported self-sacrifice within the nursing profession as the result of the prevailing stereotypical image of the "ideal nurse," leading to job dissatisfaction, presenteeism, and burnout. Younger nurses reported being less willing to self-sacrifice and consequently felt unsupported by management and senior staff, resulting in job dissatisfaction and intent to leave their job. CONCLUSION A culture of self-sacrifice within the nursing profession may lead to job dissatisfaction, presenteeism, burnout, and retention problems, especially for younger nurses. A self-sacrificing image of nursing may also deter potential recruits from exploring a career in the profession.
