Tuning ice nucleation with counterions on polyelectrolyte brush surfaces

Exploiting intermediate wetting on superhydrophobic surfaces for efficient icing prevention

HYPOTHESIS

Superhydrophobic surfaces can effectively prevent the freezing of supercooled droplets in technological systems. Droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces commonly not only wet the top asperities (Cassie State), but also partially penetrate into microstructure due to surface properties, environment, and droplet impact occurring in real-world applications. Implications on ice nucleation can be expected and are little explored. It remains elusive how anti-icing surfaces can be designed to exploit intermediate wetting phenomena.

EXPERIMENTS

We utilized engineered micro-/nanostructures, specifically micropillars, to modulate the wetting fraction in the microstructure. The behavior of intermediate wetting with supercooling and resulting implications on ice nucleation delay when potential nucleation sites are formed in the microcavities were investigated using experimental, theoretical, and simulation components.

FINDINGS

The temperature-dependent wetting fraction in the microstructure increased at supercooled temperatures, partly activated by condensation in the microcavities. At -10/-20 °C, a critical wetting fraction led to maximum ice nucleation delays, with experimental results consistent with theoretical predictions. This critical wetting fraction minimized the effective contact area solid-to-liquid along the partially wetted microstructure. The study establishes physical relations between ice nucleation delays, geometrical surface parameters and wettability properties in the intermediate wetting regime, providing guidance for the design of ice resistant microstructured surfaces.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Investigation of Freezing Point Depression in NaClO4 Electrolyte Solution by CaCl2

The development of inorganic antifreeze electrolytes is of paramount importance for the application of sodium-ion batteries under low-temperature conditions. However, there is little reported about their molecular mechanism for lowering the freezing point of electrolytes. Therefore, this study explores the mechanism by which CaCl2 lowers the freezing point of the NaClO4 electrolyte. Hexagonal ice (ice Ih) was used as the ice seed, and CaCl2 was selected as the antifreeze agent. The coexistence system of ice and solution was constructed to simulate the freezing process. It was found that there is ion rejection at the ice layer, with ions predominantly distributed in the solution. Over time, ions form an ion adsorption layer at the ice-solution interface. The radial distribution function (RDF) and spatial distribution function (SDF) of Na+, ClO4-, Ca2+, and Cl- revealed that ions form the first solvation shells with water molecules. The interaction energy between ions and water molecules is greater than that between ice nuclei and water. Therefore, ions are better able to maintain the stability of their solvation shells and inhibit the growth of ice Ih through a mechanism of competition for water molecules. Furthermore, the dissolution free energy of Na+ and Ca2+ in the aqueous phase was studied. The results indicated that Ca2+ has a stronger affinity for water molecules than Na+, making it more competitive in competing for water with ice Ih. Therefore, CaCl2 in NaClO4 solution can reduce the freezing point. This work provides a molecular-level understanding of how CaCl2 reduces the freezing point of NaClO4 solution, which is beneficial for designing strategies for low-temperature electrolytes.

Antifreeze Polysaccharides from Wheat Bran: The Structural Characterization and Antifreeze Mechanism

Exploring a novel natural cryoprotectant and understanding its antifreeze mechanism allows the rational design of future sustainable antifreeze analogues. In this study, various antifreeze polysaccharides were isolated from wheat bran, and the antifreeze activity was comparatively studied in relation to the molecular structure. The antifreeze mechanism was further revealed based on the interactions of polysaccharides and water molecules through dynamic simulation analysis. The antifreeze polysaccharides showed distinct ice recrystallization inhibition activity, and structural analysis suggested that the polysaccharides were arabinoxylan, featuring a xylan backbone with a majority of Araf and minor fractions of Manp, Galp, and Glcp involved in the side chain. The antifreeze arabinoxylan, characterized by lower molecular weight, less branching, and more flexible conformation, could weaken the hydrogen bonding of the surrounding water molecules more evidently, thus retarding the transformation of water molecules into the ordered ice structure.

Ion-specific ice provides a facile approach for reducing ice friction

HYPOTHESIS

Ice friction plays a crucial role in both basic study and practical use. Various strategies for controlling ice friction have been developed. However, one unsolved puzzle regarding ice friction is the effect of ion-ice interplay on its tribological properties.

EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS

Here, we conducted ice friction experiments and summarized the specific effects of hydrated ions on ice friction. By selecting cations and anions, the coefficient of ice friction can be reduced by more than 70 percent. Experimental spectra, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated that the addition of ions could break the H-bonds in water.

FINDINGS

The link between the charge density of ions and the coefficients of ice friction was revealed. A part of the ice structure was changed from an ice-like to a liquid-like interfacial water structure with the addition of ions. Lower charge density ions led to weaker ionic forces with the water molecules in the immobilized water layer, resulting in free water molecules increasing in the lubricating layer. This study provides guidance for preparing ice-making solutions with low friction coefficients and a fuller understanding of the interfacial water structure at low temperatures.

Enhanced Anti/De-Icing Performance on Rough Surfaces Based on The Synergistic Effect of Fluorinated Resin and Embedded Graphene

Icing negatively impacts various industrial sectors and daily life, often leading to severe safety problems and substantial economic losses. In this work, a fluorinated resin coating with embedded graphene nanoflakes is prepared using a spin-coating curing process. The results shows that the ice adhesion strength is reduced by ≈97.0% compared to the mirrored aluminum plate, and the icing time is delayed by a factor of 46.3 under simulated solar radiation power of 96 mW cm-2 (1 sun) at an ambient temperature of -15 °C. The superior anti/de-icing properties of the coating are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the fluorinated resin with a low surface energy, the rough structure of the sandblasted aluminum plate, which reduces the contact area, and the embedded graphene nanoflakes with a superior photothermal effect. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonding competition effect between the exposed-edge oxygen-containing functional groups of the embedded graphene nanoflakes and water molecules further improves the anti-icing properties. This work proposes a facile preparation method to prepare coatings with excellent anti/de-icing properties, offering significant potential for large-scale engineering applications.

Thermomechanically Resilient Polyionic Elastomers with Enhanced Anti-Icing Performances

Anti-icing gels inhibit ice formation and accretion; however, current iterations face prevalent drawbacks such as poor strength, weak substrate adhesion, and limited anti-icing properties. Herein, we propose a novel approach to address these challenges by developing a thermomechanical robust polyionic elastomer (PIE) with enhanced anti-icing properties. The PIE surface exhibits an icing delay time up to 5400 s and remains frost-free after exposure to -10 °C for 3.5 h, attributed to the inhibitory effect on ice formation by ions from ILs and the polyelectrolyte network. Moreover, the PIE exhibits remarkable anti-icing durability, with ice adhesion strengths below 35 kPa after undergoing 30 icing/deicing cycle tests at -20 °C. Following sandpaper abrasion (300 cycles), scratching, and heat treatment (100 °C, 16 h), the adhesion strength remains ca. 20 kPa, highlighting its resilience under various thermal and mechanical conditions. This exceptional durability is attributed to the low volatility of the IL and the robust ionic interactions within the PIE network. Furthermore, the PIE demonstrates favorable self-healing properties and strong substrate adhesion in both low-temperature and ambient environments, facilitated by the abundance of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic forces within PIE. This work presents an innovative approach to developing high-performance, durable, and robust anti-icing materials with potential implications across various fields.

Synergistic Effects of the Superhydrophilic and Superhydrophobic Components on the Antifreezing Performances of Latex Particles and Anti-Icing Properties of Latex Films

The development of new materials for antifreezing and anti-icing applications is a big challenge in industry and academic area. Inspired by the antifreeze proteins, latex particles with superhydrophilic zwitterionic shells and superhydrophobic cores are synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer emulsion polymerization, and the applications of the latex particles in antifreezing and anti-icing applications are investigated. In antifreezing study, the critical aggregate temperature (CAT) of the latex particles decreases, and the separation of the melting and freezing temperature of ice increases with the particle concentration. Enzyme molecules can be cryopreserved in the particle solution, and their bioactivities are well maintained. Latex particles are casted into latex films with dynamic surfaces. Anti-icing performances, including antifrosting properties, freezing delay time, and ice adhesion strengths, are studied; and the water-treated latex films present stronger anti-icing properties than other films, due to the synergistic effects of the superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic components. In addition, latex particles with zwitterionic shells and poly(n-butyl methacrylate) cores, and latex particles with small molecular surfactant on the surfaces are synthesized. The antifreezing performances of the latex particles and anti-icing properties of the latex films are compared.

Icephobic Durability of Molecular Brush-Structured PDMS Soft Coatings

The accumulation of ice can pose numerous inconveniences and potential hazards, profoundly affecting both human productivity and daily life. To combat the challenges posed by icing, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to the development of low-ice adhesion surfaces. In this study, we harness the power of molecular dynamics simulations to delve into the intricate dynamics of polymer chains and their role in determining the modulus of the material. We present a novel strategy to prepare ultralow-modulus poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomers with a molecular brush configuration as icephobic materials. The process involves grafting monohydride-terminated PDMS (H-PDMS) as side chains onto backbone chain PDMS with pendant vinyl functional groups to yield a molecular brush structure. The segments of this polymer structure effectively restrict interchain entanglement, thereby rendering a lower modulus compared to traditional linear structures at an equivalent cross-linking density. The developed soft coating exhibits a remarkably ultralow ice adhesion strength of 13.1 ± 1.1 kPa. Even after enduring 50 cycles of icing and deicing, the ice adhesion strength of this coating steadfastly stayed below 16 kPa, showing no notable increase. Importantly, the molecular brush coating applied to glass demonstrated an impressive light transmittance of 92.1% within the visible light spectrum, surpassing the transmittance of bare glass, which was measured at 91.3%. This icephobic coating with exceptional light transmittance offers a wide range of applications and holds significant potential as a practical icephobic material.

Reducing Ice Adhesion to Polyelectrolyte Surfaces by Counterion-Mediated Nonfrozen Hydration Water

Hydrophilic anti-icing coatings can be energy-effective passive solutions for combating ice accretion and reducing ice adhesion. However, their underlying mechanisms of action remain inferential and are ill-defined from a molecular perspective. Here, we systematically investigate the influence of the counterion identity on the shear ice adhesion strength to cationic polymer coatings having quaternary alkyl ammonium moieties as chargeable groups. Temperature-dependent molecular information on the hydrated polymer films is obtained using total internal reflection (TIR) Raman spectroscopy, complemented with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and ellipsometry. Ice adhesion measurements show a pronounced counterion-specific behavior with a sharp increase in adhesion at temperatures that depend on the anion identity, following the order Cl- < F- < SCN- < Br- < I-. Linked to the freezing of hydration water, the specific ordering results from differences in ion pairing and the amount of water present within the polymer film. Moreover, similar effects can be promoted by varying the cross-linking density in the coating while keeping the anion identity fixed. These findings shed new light on low ice adhesion mechanisms and may inspire novel approaches for improved anti-icing coatings.

A Microphase-Separated Design toward an All-Round Ionic Hydrogel with Discriminable and Anti-Disturbance Multisensory Functions

Stretchable ionic hydrogels with superior all-round properties that can detect multimodal sensations with excellent discriminability and robustness against external disturbances are highly required for artificial electronic skinapplications. However, some critical material parameters exhibit intrinsic tradeoffs with each other for most ionic hydrogels. Here, a microphase-separated hydrogel is demonstrated by combining three strategies: (1) using of a low crosslinker/monomer ratio to obtain highly entangled polymer chains as the first network; (2) the introduction of zwitterions into the first network; (3) the synthesis of an ultrasoft polyelectrolyte as the second network. This all-round elastic ionic hydrogel exhibits a low Young's modulus (< 60 kPa), large stretchability (> 900%), high resilience (> 95%), unique strain-stiffening behavior, excellent fatigue tolerance, high ionic conductivity (> 2.0 S m⁻1), and anti-freezing capability, which have not been achieved before. These properties allow the ionic hydrogel to operate as a stretchable multimodal sensor that can detect and decouple multiple stimuli (temperature, pressure, and proximity) with excellent discriminability, high sensitivity, and strong sensing-robustness against strains or temperature perturbations. The ionic hydrogel sensor exhibits great potential for intelligent electronic skin applications such as reliable health monitoring and accurate object identification.

Heterogeneous ice nucleation of salt solution in porous media

Water ubiquitously exists with dissolved salt in both natural and engineered porous media, such as soil, rock, concrete, and tissue; therefore, its freezing temperature depression behavior is of particular interest to various scientific communities tackling with mechanics and physics of porous media. To date, it remains elusive which physical mechanism accounts for its freezing temperature depression and how dissolved ions affect it. Herein, a series of pore-scale experiments were designated to investigate the freezing temperature of salt solutions in tubes with varying pore diameters, pore solution volumes, solid-liquid interfacial areas, ion concentrations, and ion types. The results reveal two main findings: (i) the freezing temperature depression of pore solutions is governed by the heterogeneous ice nucleation (HIN) at the water-solid interface, as evidenced by the observation that the freezing temperature decreases with the decreasing solid-liquid interfacial areas, regardless of pore diameter and pore solution volume; (ii) the dissolved salts alter HIN processes via changing the osmotic potential across the ice embryo-liquid water interface, as indicated by the observation that the freezing temperature is mainly determined by the salt concentration irrespective of salt types. Furthermore, the classical nucleation theory model is adapted for the freezing behavior of pore solutions by including an osmotic potential term. The model shows excellent performance in capturing experimental data with various pore solution concentrations, further substantiating the HIN as the physical mechanism governing pore solution freezing.

Preferential ice growth on grooved surface for crisscross-aligned graphene aerogel with large negative Poisson's ratio

Ice formation on solid surfaces is a ubiquitous process in our daily life, and ice orientation plays a critical role in anti-icing/deicing, organ cryo-preservation, and material fabrication. Although previous studies have shown that surface grooves can regulate the orientation of ice crystals, whether the parallel or perpendicular alignment to the grooves is still under debate. Here, we systematically investigate ice formation and its oriented growth on grooved surfaces through both in situ observation and theoretical simulation, and discover a remarkable size effect of the grooves. With the designability of surface groove patterns, the preferential growth of ice crystals is programmed for the fabrication of a crisscross-aligned graphene aerogel with large negative Poisson's ratio. In addition, the size effect provides guidance for the design and fabrication of solid surfaces where the effective control of ice orientation is highly desired, such as efficient deicing, long time organ cryo-preservation, and ice-templated materials.

Night-time radiative warming using the atmosphere

Night-time warming is vital for human production and daily life. Conventional methods like active heaters are energy-intensive, while passive insulating films possess restrictions regarding space consumption and the lack of heat gain. In this work, a nanophotonic-based night-time warming strategy that passively inhibits thermal radiation of objects while actively harnessing that of atmosphere is proposed. By using a photonic-engineered thin film that exhibits high reflectivity (~0.91) in the atmospheric transparent band (8-14 μm) and high absorptivity (~0.7) in the atmospheric radiative band (5-8 and 14-16 μm), temperature rise of 2.1 °C/4.4 °C compared to typical low-e film and broadband absorber is achieved. Moreover, net heat loss as low as 9 W m-2 is experimentally observed, compared to 16 and 39 W m-2 for low-e film and broadband absorber, respectively. This strategy suggests an innovative way for sustainable warming, thus contributes to addressing the challenges of climate change and promoting global carbon neutrality.

Interfacial Water-Dictated Oil Adhesion Based on Ion Modulation

Oil adhesion on ionic surfaces is ubiquitous in organisms and natural environments and is generally determined by surface chemical component and texture. However, when adhesion occurs, water molecules at the solid-liquid interface, acting as a bridge not only influenced by the structure and composition of the solid surface but also interacting with the neighboring oil molecules, play a crucial role but are always overlooked. Herein, we investigate the oil adhesion process on a carboxyl-terminated self-assembled monolayer surface (COOH-SAM) in ionic solutions and observe the interfacial water structure via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in this system. It is found that the lower the tetracoordinated water content, the stronger the oil adhesion. Compared to monovalent ions, the strengthened binding of multivalent ions to the COOH-SAM surface makes the interfacial water more disordered, which eventually leads to a stronger oil adhesion. Notably, the amount of oil adhesion decreases with an increase in the thickness of the interfacial water region. The interfacial water-dictated oil adhesion has been demonstrated in capillary to simulate the water-driven oil recovery, providing a molecular-level explanation for enhanced oil recovery from low salinity water flooding and also indicating potential applications in intelligent microfluidic and seawater desalination.

A Highly Transparent Photo-Electro-Thermal Film with Broadband Selectivity for All-Day Anti-/De-Icing

A photo- and electro-thermal film can convert sunlight and electricity into heat to solve icing problems. Combination of them provides an efficient strategy for all-day anti-/de-icing. However, only opaque surfaces have been reported, due to the mutual exclusiveness between photon absorption and transmission. Herein, a highly transparent and scalable solution-processed photo-electro-thermal film is reported, which exhibits an ultra-broadband selective spectrum to separate the visible light from sunlight and a countertrend suppress of emission in longer wavelength. It absorbs ≈ 85% of invisible sunlight (ultraviolet and near-infrared) for light-heat conversion, meanwhile maintains luminous transmittance > 70%. The reflection of mid-infrared leads to low emissivity (0.41), which further preserves heat on the surface for anti-/de-icing purpose. This ultra-broadband selectivity enables temperature elevation > 40 °C under 1-sun illumination and the mutual support between photo-thermal and electro-thermal effects contributes to > 50% saving of electrical consumption under weak solar exposure (0.4-sun) for maintaining unfrozen surfaces at -35 °C environment. The reverberation from photo-electro-thermal and super-hydrophobic effects illustrates a lubricating removal of grown ice in short time (< 120 s). The self-cleaning ability and the durability under mechanical, electrical, optical, and thermal stresses render the film stable for long-term usage in all-day anti-/de-icing applications.

Effects of electrostatic coupling and surface polarization on polyelectrolyte brush structure

In this work, we perform molecular dynamics simulations to study a spherical polyelectrolyte brush. We explore the effects of surface polarization and electrostatic coupling on brush size and distribution of counterions. The method of image charges is considered to take into account surface polarization, considering a metallic, an unpolarizable, and a dielectric nano-core. It is observed that, for all cases, a moderate shrinking-swelling effect appears with an increase in the electrostatic coupling parameter. This effect occurs under high Manning ratios. The curves relating the average size of polyelectrolyte brush as a function of coupling show a minimum. The results show that the grafting density of polyelectrolytes on the nano-core surface plays an important role in the polarization effect. We consider a modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory to describe the counterion profiles around the brush in the case of unpolarizable nano-cores and weak electrostatic coupling.

Hydrogel Electrolyte with High Tolerance to a Wide Spectrum of pHs and Compressive Energy Storage Devices Based on It

Normally, hydrogel electrolytes widely used in flexible energy storage devices have limited tolerance to different pHs. Most gel electrolytes will lose their compressible capability when the adaptable pH is changed. Herein, a poly(acrylamide₃ -co-(sulfobetaine methacrylate)₁ )@polyacrylamide (P(A₃ -co-S₁ )@PAM) hydrogel electrolyte equipped with a dual crosslinking network (DN) is successfully fabricated, which exhibits excellent tolerance to any pHs, endowing various energy storage devices including batteries and supercapacitors with superior mechanical durability. The batteries with mild and alkaline P(A₃ -co-S₁ )@PAM electrolytes display superior stability (over 3000 cycles). Additionally, a Zn||MnO₂ battery based on the P(A₃ -co-S₁ )@PAM hydrogel electrolyte (mild) under 50% compression strain also shows excellent charge-discharge stability and high capacity at 152.4 mAh g^-1 after 600 cycles. The strong reversible hydrogen bonds and electrostatic forces originating from zwitterionic structures of poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) play an important role in dissipating and dispersing energy imposed abruptly. Meanwhile, the zwitterionic structure and intermolecular NH⋯OC hydrogen bonds of the hydrogel lead to the property of acid resistance and alkali resistance. The tough and robust covalent crosslinking bonds and the tight arrangement of DN polymer chains enable the hydrogel electrolytes to recover their initial shape fast once unloading.

Reduced Ice Adhesion Using Amphiphilic Poly(Ionic Liquid)-Based Surfaces

Ice build-up on solid surfaces causes significant economic losses for a range of industries. One solution to this problem is the development of coatings with low ice adhesion strength. Amphiphilic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)-based surfaces have been recently reported for antifogging/antifrosting applications. However, they have possible anti-icing properties through lowering the ice adhesion strength that have yet to be reported. Herein, we designed well-defined triblock copolymers composed of a polydimethylsiloxane component coupled with PIL segments of poly([2 (methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride) (PMETAC), which were subsequently UV-cured with an oligo(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (OEGDMA) cross-linker. The structure-property relationships of the resultant semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (SIPNs) were investigated by varying the counterion (i.e., trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI^-)) and the content of the PIL segments and cross-linker. An ice adhesion strength as low as 13.3 ± 8.6 kPa was observed for the coating containing 12.5 wt % of PMETAC segment and 5 wt % of OEGDMA, which is one of the lowest values reported so far for the amphiphilic coatings. Characterization of the coatings in terms of surface features, wettability, and hydration states have enabled the elucidation of different deicing mechanisms. Self-lubrication due to the existence of nonfreezable bound water led to the obtained low ice adhesion strength. This work offers a new approach for the exploration of PIL-based icephobic coatings for practical applications.

Tailoring water structure with high-tetrahedral-entropy for antifreezing electrolytes and energy storage at -80 °C

One of unsolved puzzles about water lies in how ion-water interplay affects its freezing point. Here, we report the direct link between tetrahedral entropy and the freezing behavior of water in Zn²⁺-based electrolytes by analyzing experimental spectra and molecular simulation results. A higher tetrahedral entropy leads to lower freezing point, and the freezing temperature is directly related to the entropy value. By tailoring the entropy of water using different anions, we develop an ultralow temperature aqueous polyaniline| |Zn battery that exhibits a high capacity (74.17 mAh g^-1) at 1 A g^-1 and -80 °C with ~85% capacity retention after 1200 cycles due to the high electrolyte ionic conductivity (1.12 mS cm^-1). Moreover, an improved cycling life is achieved with ~100% capacity retention after 5000 cycles at -70 °C. The fabricated battery delivers appreciably enhanced performance in terms of frost resistance and stability. This work serves to provide guidance for the design of ultralow temperature aqueous batteries by precisely tuning the water structure within electrolytes.

Recent advances of bio-inspired anti-icing surfaces

The need for improved anti-icing surfaces is the demand of the time and closely related to many important aspects of our lives as surface icing threatens not only industrial production but also human safety. Freezing on a cold surface is usually a heterogeneous nucleation process induced by the substrate. Creating an anti-icing surface is mainly achieved by changing surface morphology and chemistry to regulate the interaction between the surface and the water/ice to inhibit freezing on the surface. In this paper, recent research progress in the creation of biomimetic anti-icing surfaces is reviewed. Firstly, basic strategies of bionic anti-icing are introduced, and then bionic anti-icing surface strategies are reviewed according to four aspects: the process of ice formation, including condensate self-removing, inhibiting ice nucleation, reducing ice adhesion, and melting accumulated ice on the surface. The remaining challenges and the direction of future development of biomimetic anti-icing surfaces are also discussed.

Room-Temperature Annealing-Free Gold Printing via Anion-Assisted Photochemical Deposition

Metal patterning via additive manufacturing has been phasing-in to broad applications in many medical, electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries. While previous efforts have produced various promising metal-patterning strategies, their complexity and high cost have limited their practical application in rapid production and prototyping. Herein, a one-step gold printing technique based on anion-assisted photochemical deposition (APD), which can directly print highly conductive gold patterns (1.08 × 10⁷ S m^-1 ) under ambient conditions without post-annealing treatment, is introduced. Uniquely, the APD uses specific ion effects with projection lithography to pattern Au nanoparticles and simultaneously sinter them into tunable porous gold structures. The significant influence of kosmotropic or chaotropic anions in the precursor ink on tuning the morphologies and conductivities of the printed patterns by employing a series of different ions, including Cl^- ions, in the printing process is presented. Additionally, the resistance stabilities and the electrochemical properties of the APD-printed gold patterns are carefully investigated. The high conductivity and excellent conformability of the printed Au electrodes are demonstrated with reliable performance in electrophysiological signal delivery and acquisition for biomedical applications. This work exploits the potential of photochemical-deposition-based metal patterning in flexible electronic manufacturing.

DFT study of common anions adsorption at graphene surface due to anion-π interaction

Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we researched the different anions adsorption on the graphene and found that anions can be stably adsorbed on the graphene surface due to the anion-π interaction. The adsorption energy decreased as the order of HPO₄^2- > SO₄^2- > F^- > CH₃COO^- > ClO₃^- > NO₃^- > ClO₄^- > SCN^- > Cl^- > Br^-. The adsorption energy markedly increased as the valence of anion increased from negative monovalence (< -20 kcal/mol) to negative bivalence (> -40 kcal/mol). The energy decomposition analysis (EDA) showed that anion-π interaction is mainly induced by orbital effect. This work provides new insights for understanding Hofmeister effect at graphene interface from the molecular level and indicates that the anion-π interaction cannot be ignored at the interface, especially for the substrate with π-electron-rich carbon-based nanomaterials.

Inhibition Effect of Ti3C2Tx MXene on Ice Crystals Combined with Laser-Mediated Heating Facilitates High-Performance Cryopreservation

The phenomena of ice formation and growth are of great importance for climate science, regenerative medicine, cryobiology, and food science. Hence, how to control ice formation and growth remains a challenge in these fields and attracts great interest from widespread researchers. Herein, the ice regulation ability of the two-dimensional MXene Ti₃C₂T_x in both the cooling and thawing processes is explored. Molecularly speaking, the ice growth inhibition mechanism of Ti₃C₂T_x MXene is ascribed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between functional groups of -O-, -OH, and -F distributed on the surface of Ti₃C₂T_x and ice/water molecules, which was elucidated by the molecular dynamics simulation method. In the cooling process, Ti₃C₂T_x can decrease the supercooling degree and inhibit the sharp edge morphology of ice crystals. Moreover, taking advantage of the outstanding photothermal conversion property of Ti₃C₂T_x, rapid ice melting can be achieved, thus reducing the phenomena of devitrification and ice recrystallization. Based on the ice restriction performance of Ti₃C₂T_x mentioned above, Ti₃C₂T_x is applied for cryopreservation of stem-cell-laden hydrogel constructs. The results show that Ti₃C₂T_x can reduce cryodamage to stem cells induced by ice injury in both the cooling and thawing processes and finally increase the cell viability from 38.4% to 80.9%. In addition, Ti₃C₂T_x also shows synergetic antibacterial activity under laser irradiation, thus realizing sterile cryopreservation of stem cells. Overall, this work explores the ice inhibition performance of Ti₃C₂T_x, elucidates the physical mechanism, and further achieves application of Ti₃C₂T_x in the field of cell cryopreservation.

Nanopore Sensing Technique for Studying the Hofmeister Effect

The nanopore sensing technique is an emerging method of detecting single molecules, and extensive research has gone into various fields, including nanopore sequencing and other applications of single-molecule studies. Recently, several researchers have explored the specific ion effects in nanopore channels, enabling a unique understanding of the Hofmeister effect at the single-molecule level. Herein, the recent advances of using nanopore sensing techniques are reviewed to study the Hofmeister effect and the physicochemical mechanism of this process is attempted. The challenges and goals are also discussed for the future in this field.

Chemical Nature of Heterogeneous Electrofreezing of Supercooled Water Revealed on Polar (Pyroelectric) Surfaces

The ability to control the icing temperature of supercooled water (SCW) is of supreme importance in subfields of pure and applied sciences. The ice freezing of SCW can be influenced heterogeneously by electric effects, a process known as electrofreezing. This effect was first discovered during the 19th century; however, its mechanism is still under debate. In this Account we demonstrate, by capitalizing on the properties of polar crystals, that heterogeneous electrofreezing of SCW is a chemical process influenced by an electric field and specific ions. Polar crystals possess a net dipole moment. In addition, they are pyroelectric, displaying short-lived surface charges at their hemihedral faces at the two poles of the crystals as a result of temperature changes. Accordingly, during cooling or heating, an electric field is created, which is negated by the attraction of compensating charges from the environment. This process had an impact in the following experiments. The icing temperatures of SCW within crevices of polar crystals are higher in comparison to icing temperatures within crevices of nonpolar analogs. The role played by the electric effect was extricated from other effects by the performance of icing experiments on the surfaces of pyroelectric quasi-amorphous SrTiO₃. During those studies it was found that on positively charged surfaces the icing temperature of SCW is elevated, whereas on negatively charged surfaces it is reduced. Following investigations discovered that the icing temperature of SCW is impacted by an ionic current created within a hydrated layer on top of hydrophilic faces residing parallel to the polar axes of the crystals. In the absence of such current on analogous hydrophobic surfaces, the pyroelectric effect does not influence the icing temperature of SCW. Those results implied that electrofreezing of SCW is a process influenced by specific compensating ions attracted by the pyroelectric field from the aqueous solution. When freezing experiments are performed in an open atmosphere, bicarbonate and hydronium ions, created by the dissolution of atmospheric CO₂ in water, influence the icing temperature. The bicarbonate ions, when attracted by positively charged pyroelectric surfaces, elevate the icing temperature, whereas their counterparts, hydronium ions, when attracted by the negatively charged surfaces reduce the icing temperature. Molecular dynamic simulations suggested that bicarbonate ions, concentrated within the near positively charged interfacial layer, self-assemble with water molecules to create stabilized slightly distorted “ice-like” hexagonal assemblies which mimic the hexagons of the crystals of ice. This occurs by replacing, within those ice-like hexagons, two hydrogen bonds of water by C–O bonds of the HCO₃^– ion. On the basis of these simulations, it was predicted and experimentally confirmed that other trigonal planar ions such as NO₃^–, guanidinium⁺, and the quasi-hexagonal biguanidinium⁺ ion elevate the icing temperature. These ions were coined as “ice makers”. Other ions including hydronium, Cl^–, and SO₄^–2 interfere with the formation of ice-like assemblies and operate as “ice breakers”. The higher icing temperatures induced within the crevices of the hydrophobic polar crystals in comparison to the nonpolar analogs can be attributed to the proton ordering of the water molecules. In contrast, the icing temperatures on related hydrophilic surfaces are influenced both by compensating charges and by proton ordering.

Transparent, Photothermal, and Icephobic Surfaces via Layer-by-Layer Assembly

Icing and frosting on transparent surfaces compromise visibility on various optical equipment and transparent infrastructures. It remains challenging to fabricate energy-saving coatings for harvesting solar energy while maintaining high transparency. Here, transparent, photothermic, and icephobic composite surfaces composed of photothermal nanomaterials and polyelectrolytes via layer-by-layer assembly are designed and constructed. The positively-charged polypyrrole nanoparticles and negatively-charged poly(acrylic acid) are assembled as exemplary materials via electrostatic attractions. The optically transparent photothermal coatings are successfully fabricated and exhibited photothermal capabilities and light-transmittance performance. Among the various coatings applied, the seven-bilayer coating can increase the temperature by 35 °C under 1.9-sun illumination, maintaining high transmittance (>60%) of visible light. With sunlight illumination at subzero temperatures (> -35 °C), the coatings show pronounced capabilities to inhibit freezing, melt accumulated frost, and decrease ice adhesion. Precisely, the icephobic surfaces remain free of frost at -35 °C as long as sunlight illumination is present; the accumulated frost melts rapidly within 300 s. The ice adhesion strength decreases to ≈0 kPa as the melted water acts as a lubricant. Furthermore, the negatively-charged graphene oxide and positively-charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) show their material diversity applicable in the coating fabrication.

Ionic interaction-driven switchable bactericidal surfaces

Bacteria in the external environment inevitably invade the wound and subsequently colonize the wound surface during surgery and biomedical operations, which slows down the process of wound healing and tissue repair; this poses a significant threat to human health. Therefore, the development of an intelligent antibacterial surface has become the focus of research in the field of antimicrobial strategies, which has important social and economic significance. Here, we present a simple approach of producing an ionic interaction-driven anionic activation substratum which is then functionalized with cationic molecules through coulombic interactional immobilization. The switchable multifunctional antibacterial surface can decrease bacterial attachment and inactivate the attached microorganisms, thus overcoming the conventional challenge for antibacterial surfaces. Briefly, poly (3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt) (PSPMA) brushes were constructed by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization on silicon or cotton fabric substrates, and a positive-charged component, namely lysozyme (LYZ), hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) or chitosan (CS), was loaded on negative-charged sulfonate groups through electrostatic interactions. The resultant brush-grafted surfaces exhibited more than ∼95.5% bactericidal efficacy and ∼92.8% release rate after the introduction of an adequate amount of contra-ions (1.0 M; Na⁺ & Cl^-) against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, thus achieving a regenerated surface through the cyclic process of "assembly-dissociation". Smart cotton fabric (Fabric-PSPMA/LYZ and Fabric-PSPMA/CS) surfaces were constructed, which were found to promote wound epidermal tissue regeneration with a higher efficiency after 7-day in vivo studies. This ionic interaction-driven method used in the present work is simple and can reversibly renew antibacterial surfaces, which will help in the wider utilization of switchable antibacterial materials with a more ecologic and economic significance. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Smart antibacterial surfaces with renewable characteristics have attracted considerable interests over the past few years. Here, we used ionic interaction-driven force to manipulate dynamic conformational changes in PSPMA surface brushes, accompanied by highly switchable bacteria killing and bacteria releasing behaviors. Different cationic molecules were also designed for assembly/dissociation on the PSPMA-modified surfaces, and the essential parameters, including chemical structures, molecular weight, and cationic charge density, were investigated. With the refined structural combinations and the balance of bacteria killing/bacteria releasing behaviors, smart cotton fabrics (e.g., Fabric-PSPMA/lysozyme and Fabric-PSPMA/chitosan) were designed that could promote wound healing and tissue repair. These results contribute to the fundamental understanding of a switchable cationic-anionic pair design and the corresponding practical, renewable, highly antibacterial fabric.

Critical In-Plane Density of Polyelectrolyte Brush for the Ordered Hydrogen-Bonded Structure of Incorporated Water

A polymer electrolyte brush is a reasonable platform to confine water molecules within a nanoscopic area to study their role in the function of interacting media because of their adjustable nanospace and charge by changing the in-plane density and side chains of the brush. Here, we demonstrate how the in-plane spacing of cationic polymer brush chains, poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethylammonium chloride] (PMTAC), affects the hydrogen bond configuration of incorporated water using soft X-ray emission spectroscopy. At the critical in-plane density σ = 0.30 chains/nm² of PMTAC, tetrahedrally coordinated water molecules started to melt into distorted or broken hydrogen-bonded configurations. Considering the charge on the quaternary ammonium cations, the electric field required to form a tetrahedrally coordinated hydrogen-bonded configuration was estimated as ∼500 kV cm^-1 and is effective up to ∼1 nm from the surface of the polymer chain. These findings are useful for designing specific interface properties and the resultant surface function of polyelectrolyte-based materials.

Highly Transparent and Self-Healable Solar Thermal Anti-/Deicing Surfaces: When Ultrathin MXene Multilayers Marry a Solid Slippery Self-Cleaning Coating

Solar anti-/deicing can solve icing problems by converting sunlight into heat. One of the biggest problems, which has long been plaguing the design of solar anti-/deicing surfaces, is that photothermal materials are always lightproof and appear black, because of the mutual exclusiveness between generating heat and retaining transparency. Herein, a highly transparent and scalable solar anti-/deicing surface is reported, which enables the coated glass to exhibit high transparency (>77% transmittance at 550 nm) and meanwhile causes a >30 °C surface temperature increase relative to the ambient environment under 1.0 sun illumination. Such a transparent anti-/deicing surface can be fabricated onto a large class of substrates (e.g., glass, ceramics, metals, plastics), by applying a solid omniphobic slippery coating onto layer-by-layer-assembled ultrathin MXene multilayers. Hence, the surface possesses a self-cleaning ability to shed waterborne and oil-based liquids thanks to residue-free slipping motion. Passive anti-icing and active deicing capabilities are, respectively, obtained on the solar thermal surface, which effectively prevents water from freezing and simultaneously melts pre-formed ice and thick frost. The self-cleaning effect enables residue-free removal of unfrozen water and interfacially melted ice/frost to boost the anti-/deicing efficiency. Importantly, the surface is capable of self-healing under illumination to repair physical damage and chemical degradation.

Fire-Resistant and Hierarchically Structured Elastic Ceramic Nanofibrous Aerogels for Efficient Low-Frequency Noise Reduction

Traffic noise has been regarded as one of the most annoying pollutions that induce severe hazards to human health, both physiological and psychological. The commonly used fibrous noise absorption materials are limited by their large density, poor sound absorption ability at low frequencies, and unsatisfactory fire-resistant ability. Here, we develop hierarchically structured elastic ceramic electrospun nanofibrous aerogels, which possess lightweight properties (density of 13.29 mg cm^-3) and superior low-frequency sound absorption ability (NRC value of 0.59). Specifically, the obtained ceramic electrospun nanofibrous aerogel is nonflammable on exposure to fire and can be compressed and quickly recover to its original height without any visible damage. Moreover, the resultant aerogels could be facilely and efficiently manufactured into designed shapes on a large scale, demonstrating their potential for industrialization. The successful design of such ceramic-based bulk materials may provide new insights for the further development of the next-generation high-efficiency sound-absorbing products.

Fabrication of C-Doped Titanium Dioxide Coatings with Improved Anti-icing and Tribological Behavior

The accumulation of ice on solid surfaces can cause serious losses and accidents. Current anti-icing/deicing coatings find it difficult to maintain their properties under frequent mechanical wear. In this work, the aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition method was employed to prepare C-doped titanium dioxide coatings that have both photothermal properties and excellent wear resistance. The temperature of the sample surface reached 37.6 °C after 2 sun (2 kW/m²) irradiation for 30 min at -30 °C. Compared to a pristine titanium dioxide coating, the C-doped titanium dioxide coatings demonstrated superior antifriction behavior, with the friction coefficient reduced by 47% under dry conditions. These wear resistance properties make C-doped titanium dioxide coatings highly suitable for a range of outdoor applications, especially for anti-icing purposes.

Patterning Configuration of Surface Hydrophilicity by Graphene Nanosheet towards the Inhibition of Ice Nucleation and Growth

Freezing of liquid water occurs in many natural phenomena and affects countless human activities. The freezing process mainly involves ice nucleation and continuous growth, which are determined by the energy and structure fluctuation in supercooled water. Herein, considering the surface hydrophilicity and crystal structure differences between metal and graphene, we proposed a kind of surface configuration design, which was realized by graphene nanosheets being alternately anchored on a metal substrate. Ice nucleation and growth were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The surface configuration could induce ice nucleation to occur preferentially on the metal substrate where the surface hydrophilicity was higher than the lateral graphene nanosheet. However, ice nucleation could be delayed to a certain extent under the hindering effect of the interfacial water layer formed by the high surface hydrophilicity of the metal substrate. Furthermore, the graphene nanosheets restricted lateral expansion of the ice nucleus at the clearance, leading to the formation of a curved surface of the ice nucleus as it grew. As a result, ice growth was suppressed effectively due to the Gibbs–Thomson effect, and the growth rate decreased by 71.08% compared to the pure metal surface. Meanwhile, boundary misorientation between ice crystals was an important issue, which also prejudiced the growth of the ice crystal. The present results reveal the microscopic details of ice nucleation and growth inhibition of the special surface configuration and provide guidelines for the rational design of an anti-icing surface.

Gels as emerging anti-icing materials: a mini review

Gel materials have drawn great attention recently in the anti-icing research community due to their remarkable potential for reducing ice adhesion, inhibiting ice nucleation, and restricting ice propagation. Although the current anti-icing gels are in their infancy and far from practical applications due to poor durability, their outstanding prospect of icephobicity has already shed light on a new group of emerging anti-icing materials. There is a need for a timely review to consolidate the new trends and foster the development towards dedicated applications. Starting from the stage of icing, we first survey the relevant anti-icing strategies. The latest anti-icing gels are then categorized by their liquid phases into organogels, hydrogels, and ionogels. At the same time, the current research focuses, anti-icing mechanisms and shortcomings affiliated with each category are carefully analysed. Based upon the reported state-of-the-art anti-icing research and our own experience in polymer-based anti-icing materials, suggestions for the future development of the anti-icing gels are presented, including pathways to enhance durability, the need to build up the missing fundamentals, and the possibility to enable stimuli-responsive properties. The primary aim of this review is to motivate researchers in both the anti-icing and gel research communities to perform a synchronized effort to rapidly advance the understanding and making of gel-based next generation anti-icing materials.

Dynamic Anti-Icing Surfaces (DAIS)

Remarkable progress has been made in surface icephobicity in the recent years. The mainstream standpoint of the reported antiicing surfaces yet only considers the ice-substrate interface and its adjacent regions being of static nature. In reality, the local structures and the overall properties of ice-substrate interfaces evolve with time, temperature and various external stimuli. Understanding the dynamic properties of the icing interface is crucial for shedding new light on the design of new anti-icing surfaces to meet challenges of harsh conditions including extremely low temperature and/or long working time. This article surveys the state-of-the-art anti-icing surfaces and dissects their dynamic changes of the chemical/physical states at icing interface. According to the focused critical ice-substrate contacting locations, namely the most important ice-substrate interface and the adjacent regions in the substrate and in the ice, the available anti-icing surfaces are for the first time re-assessed by taking the dynamic evolution into account. Subsequently, the recent works in the preparation of dynamic anti-icing surfaces (DAIS) that consider time-evolving properties, with their potentials in practical applications, and the challenges confronted are summarized and discussed, aiming for providing a thorough review of the promising concept of DAIS for guiding the future icephobic materials designs.

Ion-Specific Effects on the Growth of Single Ice Crystals

Understanding the effects of soluble impurities or suspended particles on ice growth is of significant importance from Earth science to materials engineering. Ions are common impurities with ice in a wide range of fields, but their effects on ice growth remain largely elusive. Here, we studied the ion-specific effects on single ice crystal growth in various electrolyte and polyelectrolyte solutions and found F^- and NH₄⁺ show remarkable abilities of inducing single ice crystals to form hexagonal shapes and reducing the growth rates of ice crystals. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the accumulation of F^- around the ice/solution interface that plays a key role in the shapes and growth rates of single ice crystals. The understanding of ion-specific effects on ice growth opens up more possibilities for improving related fields, e.g., freeze desalination and cryopreservation.

Improving Anti-Icing and De-Icing Performances via Thermal-Regulation with Macroporous Xerogel

The accumulation of ice in winter has brought many problems in industrial production and everyday life, and how to prevent icing or remove ice rapidly has aroused great attention from researchers in recent years. In this work, we demonstrated a strategy of using a superhydrophobic photothermal and thermal isolation macroporous xerogel (PMX) to delay icing and remove ice efficiently under faint sunlight irradiation. An oriented macroporous xerogel was prepared by an ice templating method, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes acting as the photothermal genesis component under sunlight irradiation were introduced into the xerogel. After fluorination, the PMX presented a robust water repellency and delayed icing. More importantly, numerous macropores in the PMX matrix acted as the thermal barrier that can restrict heat transmission to surroundings at maximum, which guarantees efficient anti-icing and de-icing in low temperature. Water on the PMX surface can never freeze at -30 °C under 0.25 kW/m² ("0.25 sun") sunlight irradiation. The outdoor experiment also has confirmed the availability of PMX in a natural winter environment. The PMX integrated with thermogenesis and thermo-isolation functions provides a new route for highly efficient anti-icing and de-icing.

Design and applications of surfaces that control the accretion of matter

Surfaces that provide control over liquid, solid, or vapor accretion provide an evolutionary advantage to numerous plants, insects, and animals. Synthetic surfaces inspired by these natural surfaces can have a substantial impact on diverse commercial applications. Engineered liquid and solid repellent surfaces are often designed to impart control over a single state of matter, phase, or fouling length scale. However, surfaces used in diverse real-world applications need to effectively control the accrual of matter across multiple phases and fouling length scales. We discuss the surface design strategies aimed at controlling the accretion of different states of matter, particularly those that work across multiple length scales and different foulants. We also highlight notable applications, as well as challenges associated with these designer surfaces' scale-up and commercialization.

Transparent Organogel Films Showing Extremely Efficient and Durable Anti-Icing Performance

Accumulation of ice and snow on solid surfaces causes destructive problems in our daily life. Therefore, the development of functional coatings/surfaces that can effectively prevent ice/snow adhesion by natural forces, such as airflow, vibration, solar radiation, or gravity, is in high demand. In this study, transparent organogel films possessing negligible ice adhesion strength were successfully designed by a simple cross-linking of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) in the presence of commercially available oils. Both the molecular weights (MWs) of the infusing oils and their contents in the PDMS matrices have proven to be key parameters for primarily determining the cross-linking density of PDMS matrices and syneresis/nonsyneresis behaviors of our samples, which closely reflected the final surface static/dynamic dewetting and anti-icing properties. By tuning only these two parameters, three different types of transparent organogel films, that is, nonsyneresis organogel (NSG), self-lubricating organogel (SLUG-I, infused with highly mobile oils), and SLUG-II (infused with viscous oils) films, were prepared. Among them, on the SLUG-I films, the lubricating oils were found to be continuously released from the PDMS matrices through syneresis for more than 1 year. Due to this unusual syneresis behavior, the ice adhesion strength became virtually zero, and this excellent anti-icing property also remained almost unchanged even after several cycles of icing/deicing testing. On the other hand, in the case of SLUG-II films, as the lubricated oil layers were too viscous, ice had trouble sliding off the surfaces by gravity. In contrast to these SLUG films, ice adhesion strength on NSG films was markedly decreased by increasing the amount of the infusing oils. In spite of NSG films having no distinct mobile oil layer, the ice adhesion strength reached its minimum of only about 5 kPa.

Synergistic Ice Inhibition Effect Enhances Rapid Freezing Cryopreservation with Low Concentration of Cryoprotectants

Despite recent advances in controlling ice formation and growth, it remains a challenge to design anti-icing materials in various fields from atmospheric to biological cryopreservation. Herein, tungsten diselenide (WSe2)-polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized through one-step solvothermal route. The WSe2-PVP NPs show synergetic ice regulation ability both in the freezing and thawing processes. Molecularly speaking, PVP containing amides group can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. At a macro level, the WSe2-PVP NPs show adsorption-inhibition and photothermal conversation effects to synergistically restrict ice growth. Meanwhile, WSe2-PVP NPs are for the first time used for the cryopreservation of human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC)-laden constructs based on rapid freezing with low concentrations of cryoprotectants (CPAs), the experimental results indicate that a minimal concentration (0.5 mg mL-1) of WSe2-PVP NPs can increase the viabilities of HUVECs in the constructs post cryopreservation (from 55.8% to 83.4%) and the cryopreserved constructs can also keep good condition in vivo within 7 days. Therefore, this work provides a novel strategy to synergistically suppress the formation and growth of the ice crystalsfor the cryopreservation of cells, tissues, or organs.

Ice Inhibition for Cryopreservation: Materials, Strategies, and Challenges

Cryopreservation technology has developed into a fundamental and important supporting method for biomedical applications such as cell-based therapeutics, tissue engineering, assisted reproduction, and vaccine storage. The formation, growth, and recrystallization of ice crystals are the major limitations in cell/tissue/organ cryopreservation, and cause fatal cryoinjury to cryopreserved biological samples. Flourishing anti-icing materials and strategies can effectively regulate and suppress ice crystals, thus reducing ice damage and promoting cryopreservation efficiency. This review first describes the basic ice cryodamage mechanisms in the cryopreservation process. The recent development of chemical ice-inhibition molecules, including cryoprotectant, antifreeze protein, synthetic polymer, nanomaterial, and hydrogel, and their applications in cryopreservation are summarized. The advanced engineering strategies, including trehalose delivery, cell encapsulation, and bioinspired structure design for ice inhibition, are further discussed. Furthermore, external physical field technologies used for inhibiting ice crystals in both the cooling and thawing processes are systematically reviewed. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives in the field of ice inhibition for high-efficiency cryopreservation are proposed.

Extreme Temperature-Tolerant Conductive Gel with Antibacterial Activity for Flexible Dual-Response Sensors

Flexible sensors based on conductive hydrogel show great potential in electronic skin and human-machine interface. However, pure water in hydrogel inevitably freezes or rapidly evaporates under extreme temperatures, leading to inadequate fulfillment of sensor performances. Herein, a well-designed strategy is reported for fabricating extreme temperature-tolerant gel-based sensors. By immersing a gelatin/polyacrylamide (PAAm)-clay composite (GC) hydrogel into a ZnCl₂/water/glycerol system, a phase-transition-tunable gel (PTTGC gel) is obtained with outstanding antifreezing (-82 °C) and long-lasting moisture (70 °C, more than 40 days) properties. Meanwhile, the gel also presents good antibacterial activity and biocompatibility attributing to Zn²⁺ and gelatin, respectively. Then, a dual-response sensor with a wide operating temperature (-60 to 60 °C) is proposed, presenting high stress and temperature sensitivities and long-term stability. The sensor will meet the needs of the human-machine interface for scientific investigation and data monitoring in polar, desert, etc.

Multivalent Surface Cations Enhance Heterogeneous Freezing of Water on Muscovite Mica

Heterogeneous ice nucleation is a crucial phenomenon in various fields of fundamental and applied science. We investigate the effect of surface cations on freezing of water on muscovite mica. Mica is unique in that the exposed ion on its surface can be readily and easily exchanged without affecting other properties such as surface roughness. We investigate freezing on natural (K⁺) mica and mica in which we have exchanged K⁺ for Al³⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, and Sr²⁺. We find that liquid water freezes at higher temperatures when ions of higher valency are present on the surface, thus exposing more of the underlying silica layer. Our data also show that the size of the ion affects the characteristic freezing temperature. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the effects that the ion valency and exposed silica layer have on the behavior of water on the surface. The results indicate that multivalent cations enhance the probability of forming large clusters of hydrogen bonded water molecules that are anchored by the hydration shells of the cations. These clusters also have a large fraction of free water that can reorient to take ice-like configurations, which are promoted by the regions on mica devoid of the ions. Thus, these clusters could serve as seedbeds for ice nuclei. The combined experimental and simulation studies shed new light on the influence of surface ions on heterogeneous ice nucleation.

Robust Photothermal Coating Strategy for Efficient Ice Removal

Preventing ice formation and ice swift removal from the solid surface are essential in numerous application fields. Superhydrophobic coating is an effective way to delay the icing phenomenon. However, the superhydrophobic coating was wetted easily after icing-deicing cycles that led to the failure of anti-icing. In this study, a robust, amphiphobic coating consisted of fluorinated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (FMWCNTs) and commercial polyurethane was constructed by a simply spray process. Because of the addition of FMWCNTs, the coating demonstrated a good amphiphobic feature and highly efficient photothermal conversion, which endowed the coating surface with excellent deicing and defrosting characteristics under sunlight irradiation. In addition, self-cleaning and self-healing properties of the coating under sunlight ensured its efficient photothermal conversion and long service life. To further improve the photothermal deicing effect, a coating system containing a photothermal layer (P), thermal-conductive layer (C), and thermal-protective layer (P) was constructed. The heat generating from the photothermal layer can transfer the whole coating surface by the conductive layer, but with limited transmission to substrate materials by a thermal-protective layer. The coating system can still deice and defrost rapidly on the whole surface and only a small portion of photothermal coating was irradiated under extremely low temperature. The outdoor experiment has confirmed that the coating melted and removed snow rapidly in a winter environment. The multifunctional photothermal deicing coating may have a wide application in outdoor surrounding.

Use of Ion Exchange To Regulate the Heterogeneous Ice Nucleation Efficiency of Mica

Heterogeneous ice nucleation (HIN) triggered by mineral surfaces typically exposed to various ions can have a significant impact on the regional atmosphere and climate. However, the dependence of HIN on the nature of the mineral surface ions is still largely unexplored due to the complexity of mineral surfaces. Because K⁺ on the atomically flat (001) surface of mica can be readily replaced by different cations through ion exchange, muscovite mica was selected; its simple nature provides a very straightforward system that can serve as the model for investigating the effects of mineral surface ions on HIN. Our experiments show that the surface (001) of H⁺-exchanged mica displays markedly higher HIN efficiencies than that of Na-/K-mica. Vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy reveals that H-mica induces substantially less orientation ordering than Na-/K-mica within the contact water layer at the interface. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the HIN efficiency of mica depends on the positional arrangement and orientation of the interfacial water. The formation of the hexagonal ice Ih basal-type structure in the first water layer atop the mica surface facilitates HIN, which is determined by the size of the protruding ions atop the mica surface and by the surface adsorption energy. The orientational distribution is optimal for HIN when 25% of the water molecules in the first water layer atop the mica surface have one OH group pointing up and 25% have one OH group pointing down, which, in turn, is determined by the surface charge distribution.

Ionic hydrogen bond effects on polyelectrolyte brushes beyond the hydronium and hydroxide ions

Herein, we have demonstrated that the properties of both strong and weak polyelectrolyte brushes including hydration, stiffness, conformation, and wettability can be tuned by the hydrogen bonding between the bound counterions and the grafted chains beyond the hydronium and hydroxide ions. This will greatly extend the application of ionic hydrogen bond effects in polymer systems.
