Abstract
BACKGROUND The learning curve of total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the anterior approach in the supine position is considered to be long owing to limited surgical field visualization. This study aimed to investigate the learning curve of a trainee's cup placement using computed tomography (CT)-based navigation, focusing on identifying the number of cases required to achieve proficiency. METHODS This retrospective cohort study included 112 hips that underwent total hip arthroplasty using CT-based navigation via anterolateral approach in the supine position by a trainee surgeon who had performed fewer than 20 prior THA cases. The absolute differences in cup alignment between postoperative measurements and intraoperative records, and differences in three-dimensional position between postoperative measurements and preoperative plan were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U test. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the cutoff point for achieving accuracy. RESULTS The absolute differences were 2.4°±2.5° (inclination) and 2.4°±2.0° (anteversion), and 1.5 mm ± 1.3 mm (coronal plane) and 1.4 mm ± 1.2 mm (axial plane). The ROC curve identified 20 cases as the cutoff point for proficiency, with significant improvement in cup inclination accuracy. Multivariate analysis revealed that the first 20 cases (odds ratio, 10.4; 95% confidence interval, 3.1-34.5) were a predictive risk factor for inaccurate cup alignment. No cup revisions or dislocations occurred. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to identify the learning curve of cup placement using CT-based navigation via an anterior approach by an inexperienced trainee surgeon. Proficiency in cup placement was achieved after 20 cases using CT-based navigation.

Abstract
Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) has been previously studied as an alternative form of resistance training to gain lean mass and improve performance outcomes. However, in all exercise studies of BFRT, the proportion of female participants represents only 17-29% of all research participants. This highlights a strong underrepresentation of females and the need for more knowledge on the impact of BFRT and sex differences. The primary objective was to compare the impact of 6-week BFRT on lean mass, strength, and performance outcomes between males and females. A total of 38 adults [age, 25.3 ± 3.1 years; female, n = 19 (50%)] performed whole-body resistance training program with blood flow restriction three times per week. Exercises were performed at 30% of 1-repetition maximum (1-RM) and blood flow restriction cuffs were set to 60% of each individual's limb occlusion pressure. Body composition was assessed via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and strength was measured using 1-RM. A significant increase in lean mass was observed in males (p = 0.009) and females (p = 0.023) with no difference in the change between groups (p = 0.279). Both males and females increased 1-RM for upper- and lower-body exercises, with significant interaction effects (time x sex) for chest press (p = 0.003), seated row (p = 0.038), knee flexion (p = 0.043), and knee extension (p = 0.035), suggesting males increased 1-RM more for these exercises. Furthermore, peak power was improved in males (p < 0.001) and females (p = 0.002) during a vertical squat jump, but a significant interaction (time x sex) effect was observed (p = 0.039), suggesting males increased to a greater extent. Males and females significantly increased lean body mass, to a similar degree, following six weeks of resistance training in combination with blood flow restriction. Likewise, both males and females improved muscle strength following 6-week BFRT, however males may improve strength to a greater extent than females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A robust comparison of the recovery pathway between sexes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is lacking. This study investigated sex-based differences in physical and psychological recovery, and return to sport (RTS), after ACLR. METHODS 104 community-level patients underwent ACLR. Patients were evaluated at 6-, 12- and 24-months with the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Return to Sport after Injury Scale (ACL-RSI), International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) form and Tegner Activity Scale (TAS), a 4-hop test battery including the 6-meter timed hop (6MTH) and the single (SHD), triple (THD) and triple crossover (TCHD) hop tests for distance, and peak isokinetic knee extensor and flexor torque. Sex-based differences were assessed, while regression analysis modelled the relationship between patient characteristics and outcomes, with 24-month psychological readiness to RTS. RESULTS All PROMS improved (p < 0.05), with males reporting higher 24-month ACL-RSI (p = 0.002), IKDC (p = 0.007) and TAS (p = 0.005) scores. A greater percentage of males returned to pivoting sports at 24 months (p = 0.030, males 60.0%, females 40.8%). Males demonstrated higher knee extensor strength LSIs at 6 (p = 0.037) and 24 (p = 0.047) months, and higher knee flexor strength LSIs at 6 (p = 0.007) and 12 (p = 0.002) months. IKDC knee scores (β = 24.9; 95% CI, 10.8 to 35.0), male sex (β = 12.2; 95% CI, 3.9 to 20.4) and the 6MTH LSI (β = 1.31; 95% CI, 0.6 to 2.1) were associated with the ACL-RSI. CONCLUSIONS In community-level ACLR patients, females demonstrated lower physical performance recovery, subjective function and psychological readiness, as well as a lower rate of RTS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditional forms of exercise affect immune, metabolic, and myokine responses and contribute to a multitude of health benefits. Whole body vibration (WBV) has recently emerged as an exercise mimetic that may be more tolerable for those individuals that cannot perform traditional exercise. However, the myokines response to acute WBV in humans has yet to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE To characterize the decorin and myostatin response to acute whole body vibration (WBV) and determine the impact of adiposity, sex, and race. SUBJECTS One hundred twenty-nine adults (32.8 ± 0.4 years, 66.7% female, 53.5% non-Hispanic Black) were recruited as part of an ongoing, longitudinal twin cohort parent study. Participants were classified into three groups: those with obesity (OB: ≥30 kg/m2), those who are overweight (OW: ≥25 and <30 kg/m2), or those with normal weight (NW: <25 kg/m2) based on BMI. METHODS Blood was collected at baseline (PRE), immediately post (POST), and 1 h (1H), 3 h (3H), and 24 h (24H) post WBV. The acute WBV protocol consisted of 10 cycles of 1 min of vibration exercise followed by 30 s of standing rest. RESULTS The response was similar between NW and OW, so these groups were combined for analysis (NW/OW: BMI < 30 kg/m2). Overall, circulating concentrations of decorin were higher (p < 0.001) POST (8.80 ± 0.19 pg/mL) and significantly lower (p's ≤ 0.005) at 1H (8.66 ± 0.19 pg/mL) and 3H (8.68 ± 0.19 pg/mL), compared to PRE (8.71 ± 0.19 pg/mL). Decorin POST was greater (p = 0.016) in the OB group (8.82 ± 0.18 pg/mL) compared to the NW/OW group (8.77 ± 0.20 pg/mL). Overall, myostatin was higher (p = 0.002) POST (54.93 ± 1.04 pg/mL) and lower (p < 0.001) at 24H (49.13 ± 1.04 pg/mL) compared to PRE (53.49 ± 1.04 pg/mL). The myostatin response was lower (p's ≤ 0.001) in female and non-Hispanic White individuals compared to male and non-Hispanic Black individuals, respectively. CONCLUSIONS A single bout of WBV can facilitate the release of decorin and myostatin into circulation, a similar response to traditional exercise. Additionally, adiposity, sex and race should be considered when evaluating the myokines response to WBV.

Abstract
Scapula shape is highly variable across humans and appears to be sexually dimorphic-differing significantly between biological males and females. However, previous investigations of sexual dimorphism in scapula shape have not considered the effects of allometry (the relationship between size and shape). Disentangling allometry from sexual dimorphism is necessary because apparent sex-based differences in shape could be due to inherent differences in body size. This study aimed to investigate sexual dimorphism in scapula shape and examine the role of allometry in sex-based variation. We used three-dimensional geometric morphometrics with Procrustes ANOVA to quantify scapula shape variation associated with sex and size in 125 scapulae. Scapula shape significantly differed between males and females, and males tended to have larger scapulae than females for the same body height. We found that males and females exhibited distinct allometric relationships, and sexually dimorphic shape changes did not align with male- or female-specific allometry. A secondary test revealed that sexual dimorphism in scapula shape persisted between males and females of similar body heights. Overall, our findings indicate that there are sex-based differences in scapula shape that cannot be attributed to size-shape relationships. Our results shed light on the potential role of sexual selection in human shoulder evolution, present new hypotheses for biomechanical differences in shoulder function between sexes, and identify relevant traits for improving sex classification accuracy in forensic analyses.

Abstract
Thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by the degeneration of joint surfaces at the base of the thumb. If conservative treatments have failed, surgery may be needed to improve symptoms. Typically, standard clinical tools, such as the pinch gauge, are used to measure thumb force. However, these devices have utilized multiple digits and do not represent forces specifically generated by the thumb. Therefore, different devices are necessary to accurately measure isolated thumb force. The primary objective was to research the effect of thumb force after ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition surgery. To accomplish this, several sub-objectives were implemented: (1) create a testing device to collect isolated thumb forces, (2) collect a normative thumb force data set of males and females to compare the impact of aging and surgery, (3) collect and compare clinical data to see if these data sets matched isolated thumb forces, (4) determine the effect of wrist position on isolated thumb force data in different wrist positions, and (5) collect thumb force in directions that mimic daily activities, a directional force downward (push) and inward (pull). On average, older participants generated statistically larger forces than younger participants. Additionally, only 50% of CMC OA participants showed greater than 5 N of improvement at 6-months post-surgery compared to pre-surgery, but did not reach healthy force levels. When evaluating wrist rotation, OA participants' push and pull decreased by 8 N and 7 N in the horizontal wrist position, and their push and pull increased by 2 N and 5 N in the vertical wrist position. Evaluation and results with standard clinical tools showed different post-surgery trends than isolated force data, which suggested the clinical approach has mixed results and may be under- or over-estimating the recovery process. These data sets allow surgeons and hand therapists to identify changes in isolated thumb force generation to create specialized therapies and treatment options, which is an improvement upon current clinical measurement tools.

Abstract
A February 3, 2023 train derailment and subsequent burn released hazardous chemicals into East Palestine, Ohio. One potential exposure was polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (cPCBs), collectively referred to as dioxins. Many studies have linked dioxins to numerous health effects. A pilot study was conducted July 17-18, 2023 to assess residents' serum dioxin levels. Eighteen persons who were White, nonsmokers with a mean age of 55, and 56% female, provided serum for analysis. Measurement of 20 dioxins, furans, and cPCBs congeners was conducted using gas chromatography, isotope dilution, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. A toxic equivalency (TEQ) value for each participant was calculated by multiplying the reported concentration of each congener by its toxic equivalency factor and summing the results. TEQs were compared to 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data by race/ethnicity, sex, and age group. All participants had serum TEQ values either below or within the range of NHANES values. Mean TEQ values were lower in younger age groups; we observed no sex-specific differences. These pilot data demonstrate that although dioxins may have formed during the derailment, exposures to participants did not increase their TEQ values compared with 2011-2012 NHANES.

Abstract
Quantifying skeletal muscle size is necessary to identify those at risk for conditions that increase frailty, morbidity, and mortality, as well as decrease quality of life. Although muscle strength, muscle quality, and physical performance have been suggested as important assessments in the screening, prevention, and management of sarcopenic and cachexic individuals, skeletal muscle size is still a critical objective marker. Several techniques exist for estimating skeletal muscle size; however, each technique presents with unique characteristics regarding simplicity/complexity, cost, radiation dose, accessibility, and portability that are important factors for assessors to consider before applying these modalities in practice. This narrative review presents a discussion centred on the theory and applications of current non-invasive techniques for estimating skeletal muscle size in diverse populations. Common instruments for skeletal muscle assessment include imaging techniques such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, peripheral quantitative computed tomography, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and Brightness-mode ultrasound, and non-imaging techniques like bioelectrical impedance analysis and anthropometry. Skeletal muscle size can be acquired from these methods using whole-body and/or regional assessments, as well as prediction equations. Notable concerns when conducting assessments include the absence of standardised image acquisition/processing protocols and the variation in cut-off thresholds used to define low skeletal muscle size by clinicians and researchers, which could affect the accuracy and prevalence of diagnoses. Given the importance of evaluating skeletal muscle size, it is imperative practitioners are informed of each technique and their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Abstract
Muscle morphological architecture, a crucial determinant of muscle function, has fascinated researchers since the Renaissance. Imaging techniques enable the assessment of parameters such as muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and fascicle length (FL), which may vary with growth, sex, and physical activity. Despite known interrelationships, robust mathematical models like causal mediation analysis have not been extensively applied to large population samples. We recruited 109 males and females, measuring knee flexor and extensor, and plantar flexor MT, PA, and FL using real-time ultrasound imaging at rest. A mixed-effects model explored sex, leg (dominant vs. non-dominant), and muscle region differences. Males exhibited greater MT in all muscles (0.1 to 2.1 cm, p < 0.01), with no sex differences in FL. Dominant legs showed greater rectus femoris (RF) MT (0.1 cm, p = 0.01) and PA (1.5°, p = 0.01), while vastus lateralis (VL) had greater FL (1.2 cm, p < 0.001) and PA (0.6°, p = 0.02). Regional differences were observed in VL, RF, and biceps femoris long head (BFlh). Causal mediation analyses highlighted MT's influence on PA, mediated by FL. Moderated mediation occurred in BFlh, with FL differences. Gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis exhibited FL-mediated MT and PA relationships. This study unveils the intricate interplay of MT, FL, and PA in muscle architecture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence suggests that alterations in BCAA metabolism may contribute to the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. However, the relationship between branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and sarcopenia is incompletely understood, and existing literature presents conflicting results. In this study, we conducted a community-based study involving > 100,000 United Kingdom adults to comprehensively explore the association between BCAAs and sarcopenia, and assess the potential role of muscle mass in mediating the relationship between BCAAs and muscle strength. METHODS Multivariable linear regression analysis examined the relationship between circulating BCAAs and muscle mass/strength. Logistic regression analysis assessed the impact of circulating BCAAs and quartiles of BCAAs on sarcopenia risk. Subgroup analyses explored the variations in associations across age, and gender. Mediation analysis investigated the potential mediating effect of muscle mass on the BCAA-muscle strength relationship. RESULTS Among 108,017 participants (mean age: 56.40 ± 8.09 years; 46.23% men), positive associations were observed between total BCAA, isoleucine, leucine, valine, and muscle mass (beta, 0.56-2.53; p < 0.05) and between total BCAA, leucine, valine, and muscle strength (beta, 0.91-3.44; p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that increased circulating valine was associated with a 47% reduced sarcopenia risk (odds ratio = 0.53; 95% confidence interval = 0.3-0.94; p = 0.029). Subgroup analyses demonstrated strong associations between circulating BCAAs and muscle mass/strength in men and individuals aged ≥ 60 years. Mediation analysis suggested that muscle mass completely mediated the relationship between total BCAA, and valine levels and muscle strength, partially mediated the relationship between leucine levels and muscle strength, obscuring the true effect of isoleucine on muscle strength. CONCLUSION This study suggested the potential benefits of BCAAs in preserving muscle mass/strength and highlighted muscle mass might be mediator of BCAA-muscle strength association. Our findings contribute new evidence for the clinical prevention and treatment of sarcopenia and related conditions involving muscle mass/strength loss.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bariatric surgery (BS) patients are advised to consume protein supplements to prevent fat-free mass (FFM) loss. However, limited research has explored the efficacy of diverse protein presentations on FFM preservation. This study assesses if short peptide-based (SPB) supplements surpass complex protein-based (CPB) supplements in reducing early FFM loss post-surgery. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, 138 patients who underwent BS other than Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass (RYGB) between January 2021 and March 2021 at the Department of Bariatric Surgery of the Third People's Hospital of Chengdu were included for analysis. Patients were divided into two groups based on their consumption of protein supplements after surgery: SPB group and CPB group. Multiple linear regressions separated by sex were employed to examine the associations between SPB supplements and FFM loss and percentage of FFM (%FFM) loss, respectively. RESULTS Among participants, 69.6% were female, with a mean age of 33.3 years. In multiple linear regression analyses, SPB supplements were significantly and positively associated with a lower FFM loss in both female (ꞵ = - 1.14, P = 0.047) and male (ꞵ = - 2.36, P = 0.024), and were positively associated with a lower %FFM loss in both female (ꞵ = - 1.83) and male (ꞵ = - 2.26) but only significant in male (P = 0.049). CONCLUSION SPB supplements may be more effective in preventing early FFM loss after BS, compared to CPB supplements, particularly among male patients. Therefore, SPB supplements may be recommended to patients undergoing BS. Further research is needed to validate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Monitoring elite athletes' body composition (BC) is vital for health and optimizing performance in sports emphasizing leanness, such as athletics. This study aims to investigate and compare sex- and event-specific off-to in-season BC changes in endurance and power event athletics competitors. METHODS Elite male and female endurance athletes (> 800 m runners; n = 21) and power event athletes (sprinters, jumpers; n = 32) underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans for whole and regional lean mass (LM), fat mass (FM), bone mineral content (BMC), and density (BMD) during off-season (September-October) and in-season (April-May). Linear mixed models tested between-group off-season differences in BC, within-group off-season to in-season changes, and between-group differences in change. To assess meaningful or least significant changes (LSC) in BC, DXA precision errors were determined from two consecutive total body scans in a subsample of athletes (n = 30). RESULTS Male athletes (n = 26) gained significantly (p < 0.05) more body mass (BM; mean difference 1.5 [95% confidence interval (CI):0.5-2.4] kg), LM (843 [95% CI:-253:1459] g), and trunk LM (756 [-502:1156] g) than female athletes (n = 27). The proportion of changes in athlete's BC exceeding the LSC threshold for LM and trunk LM were 70% and 65% in males, and 48% and 26% in females. Significant (p < 0.05) within-group off-season to in-season increases in LM were found for male endurance and power athletes, and female power athletes. All groups significantly increased BMD (p < 0.05). Only male and female power athletes had significant in- to-off-season increases in BMC. 80% of all athletes who had a meaningful increase in BMC belonged to the power event group. No significant within- or between group change in FM was observed. CONCLUSIONS The present study found that male athletes gained more BM, LM and trunk LM than females. Within-group increases in regional and whole-body LM and BMC were predominantly found among power event competitors. Incorporating individual meaningful changes alongside traditional statistics provided additional insights into sex and event-group differences. Future research on elite athletic event groups should include DXA measurements closer to major outdoor-season competitions, coupled with site-specific measures (ultrasound, MRI) for better detection of subtle changes in LM and FM.

Abstract
Blood flow restriction (BFR) is a commonly used training modality that has been demonstrated to enhance muscle characteristics such as size and function. The purpose of this study was to determine if a 4-week walking program with or without BFR in healthy, active adults has an effect on body composition, anaerobic, and aerobic running performance. Thirty-three participants, randomized among three groups, completed the walking program, which included five sets of 2 min walking intervals with 1 min rest, with or without BFR, or 10 min walking with BFR. Assessments completed before and after the walking program included body composition, 40-yard sprints, and a VO2MAX test on a treadmill. A two-way ANOVA revealed no changes among the groups nor for any variables at any time (p > 0.05). Additionally, one main effect for time indicated the VO2 at V-slope threshold was greater following training for all groups combined (p = 0.001). The results demonstrate that low volume and intensity walking with BFR for 4 weeks did not provide a sufficient stimulus for changing body composition or performance metrics in a group of very active adults. Longer or more isolated exposure of BFR on the limbs may contribute to more pronounced adaptations.

Abstract
Background B-mode ultrasonography is an accessible and cost-effective method to assess muscle size and quality through muscle thickness (MT) and echo intensity (EI), respectively. Muscle thickness and EI have demonstrated relationships with maximal strength and local muscle endurance, providing a noninvasive and efficient modality to examine muscle fitness. However, these relationships have not been quantified in the individual quadriceps muscles of habitually endurance-trained populations, which may provide information to practitioners regarding rehabilitation and performance. Methods Twenty-three participants (males: N = 10; females: N = 13) underwent B-mode ultrasonography to assess MT, EI, and adipose tissue thickness-corrected echo intensity (cEI) in the vastus intermedius (VI), vastus lateralis (VL), and rectus femoris (RF). Muscle fitness was evaluated through maximal strength (1RM) and local muscle endurance (4 sets to failure at 50% 1RM) during dynamic knee extension. Relationships between ultrasonography outcomes and muscle fitness were examined through stepwise multiple linear regression. Results The results indicate that VI cEI is the strongest predictor of 1RM strength (r = -0.643), while no ultrasonography-derived measures significantly predicted local muscle endurance. Conclusion The study demonstrates that ultrasonography, specifically measures of cEI in the VI, has the greatest association with maximal strength in endurance-trained individuals. These findings suggest monitoring VI muscle size and quality may benefit practitioners who aim to improve knee extension strength for performance or following injury. In addition, the findings support the use of EI examinations in trained populations.

A systematic search was undertaken in 7 databases from inception to May 2022. Eligible randomized controlled trials examined the effects of resistance-based exercise programs on outcomes of interest in healthy young women. Meta-analysis was undertaken with a 3-level mixed-effects model. Associations between standardized mean difference (SMD) and potential moderators (number of sessions, weekly volume, and intensity) were tested by meta-regression models. Statistical significance was set at an α level of 0.05, whereas an α level of 0.05-0.10 was also considered for potential moderators of resistance training effects. Forty articles ( n = 1,312) were included. Resistance-based exercise programs resulted in a significant improvement of 0.4 SMD (95% confidence intervals [95% CI]: 0.2 to 0.5, p < 0.001) in lean mass/muscle hypertrophy and 1.2 SMD (95% CI: 0.9 to 1.5, p < 0.001) in muscle strength. A higher number of sessions was associated with changes in lean mass/muscle hypertrophy ( β = 0.01 ± 0.00, p = 0.009), whereas a higher weekly volume approached statistical significance to moderate changes in muscle strength ( β = 0.01 ± 0.01, p = 0.053). Body fat percentage (-0.4 SMD, 95% CI: -0.6 to -0.1, p = 0.006) and muscle power/rapid force (0.6 SMD, 95% CI: 0.2 to 1.1, p = 0.011) were significantly improved. In conclusion, a higher resistance training volume was associated with greater improvements in lean mass/muscle hypertrophy, muscle strength, and body fat percentage, whereas muscle power/rapid force improvements were observed irrespective of prescription characteristics. These findings may help in designing resistance training programs for muscle hypertrophy, strength and power, and body fat percentage in healthy women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to develop alternative prediction equations to predict isokinetic muscle strength at 60°/s based on anthropometric characteristics, including body mass, height, age, and sex for young and middle-aged non-athlete populations. METHODS Three hundred and thirty-two healthy non-athletic participants (174 females, 158 males) between 20 and 59 years underwent a 60°/s isokinetic knee joint concentric contraction test. Forty people were randomly selected for retesting to assess the reliability of the isokinetic instrument. Multivariate linear regression was used to establish extension peak torque (EPT) and flexion peak torque (FPT) prediction equations. Sixty extra participants were used individually to validate the prediction equations, and Bland Altman plots were constructed to assess the agreement of predicted values with actual measurements. RESULTS The result demonstrated that the instrument we used has excellent reliability. The multivariable linear regression model showed that body mass, age, and sex were significant predictors of PT (EPT: Adjusted R2 = 0.804, p < 0.001; FPT: Adjusted R2 = 0.705, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the equations we established had higher prediction accuracy than those of Gross et al. and Harbo et al. CONCLUSION: The equations developed in this study provided relatively low bias, thus providing a more suitable reference value for the knee isokinetic strength of young and middle-aged non-athletes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between obesity indicators and mortality in individuals with diabetes remains unclear, and data on cardiovascular mortality are scarce. Therefore, we investigated the associations between the five adiposity indices and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with diabetes. METHODS This cohort study included 34,686 adults with diabetes who underwent a standard health-screening program between 1996 and 2017 in Taiwan. The dates and causes of death till January 2022 were retrieved from the National Death Registry. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate the hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in relation to body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-hip ratio (WHR), body fat percentage (BF%), and A Body Shape Index (ABSI), using the third quintile as the reference group. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 15 years, there were 8,324 deaths, of which 1,748 were attributed to cardiovascular disease. After adjusting for demographics, lifestyle factors and comorbidities, ABSI was associated with all-cause mortality in an exposure-response manner; the HR (95% CI) for first and fifth vs. third quintile was 0.78 (0.69-0.89) and 1.24 (1.14-1.35), respectively. A similar but weaker exposure-response relationship was found between WHR and mortality. People with a lower BMI and BF% had an increased risk of mortality (HR [95% CI] for the first vs. third quintiles, 1.33 [1.22, 1.44] and 1.42 [1.30, 1.56], respectively). No association was observed between waist circumference categories and risk of mortality. Similar results were observed for the association of BF%, waist circumference, and ABSI with cardiovascular mortality. However, no significant association was observed between BMI and cardiovascular mortality. The association between WHR and cardiovascular mortality was stronger than that between WHR and all-cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS ABSI demonstrated a consistent exposure-response relationship with both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in this Asian cohort with diabetes. Our findings highlight the importance of monitoring ABSI, a surrogate index of central adiposity, in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Females typically exhibit lower blood pressure (BP) during exercise than males. However, recent findings indicate that adjusting for maximal strength attenuates sex differences in BP during isometric handgrip (HG) exercise and postexercise ischemia (PEI; metaboreflex isolation). In addition, body size is associated with HG strength but its contribution to sex differences in exercising BP is less appreciated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether adjusting for strength and body size would attenuate sex differences in BP during HG and PEI. We obtained beat-to-beat BP in 110 participants (36 females, 74 males) who completed 2 min of isometric HG exercise at 40% of their maximal voluntary contraction followed by 3 min of PEI. In a subset (11 females, 17 males), we collected muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Statistical analyses included independent t tests and mixed models (sex × time) with covariate adjustment for 40% HG force, height2, and body surface area. Females exhibited a lower absolute 40% HG force than male participants (Ps < 0.001). Females exhibited lower Δsystolic, Δdiastolic, and Δmean BPs during HG and PEI than males (e.g., PEI, Δsystolic BP, 15 ± 11 vs. 23 ± 14 mmHg; P = 0.004). After covariate adjustment, sex differences in BP responses were attenuated. There were no sex differences in MSNA. In a smaller strength-matched cohort, there was no sex × time interactions for BP responses (e.g., PEI systolic BP, P = 0.539; diastolic BP, P = 0.758). Our data indicate that sex differences in exercising BP responses are attenuated after adjusting for muscle strength and body size.NEW & NOTEWORTHY When compared with young males, females typically exhibit lower blood pressure (BP) during exercise. Adjusting for maximal strength attenuates sex differences in BP during isometric handgrip (HG) exercise and postexercise ischemia (PEI), but the contribution of body size is unknown. Novel findings include adjustments for muscle strength and body size attenuate sex differences in BP reactivity during exercise and PEI, and sex differences in body size contribute to HG strength differences.

Abstract
This study was aimed at comparing the force-velocity relationship during cycling and arm cranking in males and females. Thirty-two male and twenty-two female healthy volunteers performed a force-velocity test on a cycle ergometer and a cranking ergometer in a randomly selected order. The theoretical values of the maximum force at zero speed (F0) and the maximum velocity at zero braking force (v0) for the lower and upper limbs were determined, and the maximum anaerobic power (Pmax) was calculated from the individual force-velocity relationship. The Pmax and F0 of the upper limbs related to the lower limbs correspond to 78.2 ± 14.3% and 80.1 ± 17.3% in men and 65.5 ± 12.5% and 74.5 ± 6.5% in women, respectively. The theoretical maximum velocity v0 of the upper limbs to the lower limbs attained 129.1 ± 29.0% in men and 127.4 ± 26.4% in women. The results of the study can serve as reference data for the force-velocity characteristics of the upper and lower limbs of male and female athletes. The results can be used both in training and rehabilitation programs, where the starting point is the objectification of possible strength deficits in various areas of the force-velocity characteristic spectrum of the muscles of the upper and lower limbs.

Abstract
Background Despite the association between motor dysfunction and dementia, quantitative assessment of dementia-related specific motor dysfunction in patients with severe dementia is difficult. Thus, this study aimed to develop a new method to measure upper limb motor function in people with dementia. Methods We examined the relationship between dementia severity and dementia-related specific motor dysfunction using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), a dementia screening test. Participants comprised 16 nursing home residents with a mean age of 86 years and MMSE score of 14.56 (range, 1-23) Points. Participants were seated in a circle and instructed to play a drum that was placed in their lap using mallets (drumsticks) in their dominant hand. Acceleration and gyroscopic sensors were attached to their wrists to collect data on arm movements while drumming. Upper limb motor characteristics were confirmed by recording acceleration and arm movement during drumming and analyzing the correlation with handgrip strength. Results Handgrip strength was correlated with arm elevation angle during drumming. The arm elevation angle displayed a significant regression equation with the MMSE score and showed the best regression equation along with handgrip strength (adjusted R2 = 0.6035, p = 0.0009). Conclusion We developed a new method using drums to measure upper limb motor function in people with dementia. We also verified that the average arm elevation angle during drumming could predict cognitive dysfunction. This system may be used to monitor people with dementia in a simple and safe way.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: With the aging population, the incidence of degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is increasing. Sarcopenia is an age-related muscular decrease. Although epidural balloon neuroplasty is effective in patients with LSS refractory to conventional treatments, its effect has not been assessed in patients with sarcopenia. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of epidural balloon neuroplasty in patients with LSS and sarcopenia. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the following details from the electronic medical records: patient characteristics, including sex, age, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, stenosis grading, pain duration, location, pain intensity, and medications. Back and leg pain intensity was evaluated before and after the procedure at one, three, and six months during the follow-up period. A generalized estimating equations model was used at six months follow-up. Patients were divided into sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups using the cross-sectional area of the psoas muscle at the level of L3 on magnetic resonance imaging. Results: A total of 477 patients were included (sarcopenia group: 314 patients, 65.8%; non-sarcopenia group: 163 patients, 34.2%). Age, sex, body mass index, and medication quantification scale III were statistically different between both groups. The generalized estimating equations analyses-with unadjusted and adjusted estimation-revealed a significantly reduced pain intensity after the procedure compared to the baseline in both groups. The difference in pain intensity between both groups was not statistically different. Conclusions: Percutaneous epidural balloon neuroplasty may be considered for patients with chronic lumbar LSS regardless of accompanying sarcopenia.

Abstract
Low muscle mass and myosteatosis are associated with poor clinical outcomes. Computed tomography (CT) imaging is an objective method for muscle mass and quality assessment; however consensus on cut-off values is lacking. This study assessed age-, sex-, and body mass index (BMI)-specific reference values of skeletal muscle parameters and correlated muscle mass with 24-h urinary creatinine excretion (24-h UCE). In total, 960 healthy subjects were included in this study. Muscle mass and quality were determined using axial CT slices at the vertebral level L3. The muscle area was indexed for height (skeletal muscle index [SMI]). The mean age was 53 ± 11 years, and 50% were male. The SMI reference values for low muscle mass in males were 38.8 cm2/m2 (20-29 years), 39.2 (30-39 years), 39.9 (40-49 years), 39.0 (50-59 years), 37.0 (60-69 years), and 36.8 (70-79 years). For females, these reference values were 37.5 cm2/m2 (20-29 years), 35.5 (30-39 years), 32.8 (40-49 years), 33.2 (50-59 years), 31.2 (60-69 years), and 31.5 (70-79 years). 24-h UCE and SMI were significantly correlated (r = 0.54, p < 0.001) without bias between the two methods of assessing muscle mass. This study provides age-, sex-, and BMI-specific reference values for skeletal muscle parameters that will support clinical decision making.

J Strength Cond Res 37(2): 494-536, 2023-Biological sex and its relation with exercise participation and sports performance continue to be discussed. Here, the purpose was to inform such discussions by summarizing the literature on sex differences in numerous strength training-related variables and outcomes-muscle strength and endurance, muscle mass and size, muscle fiber type, muscle twitch forces, and voluntary activation; strength training participation rates, motivations, preferences, and practices; and injuries and changes in muscle size and strength with strength training. Male subjects become notably stronger than female subjects around age 15 years. In adults, sex differences in strength are more pronounced in upper-body than lower-body muscles and in concentric than eccentric contractions. Greater male than female strength is not because of higher voluntary activation but to greater muscle mass and type II fiber areas. Men participate in strength training more frequently than women. Men are motivated more by challenge, competition, social recognition, and a desire to increase muscle size and strength. Men also have greater preference for competitive, high-intensity, and upper-body exercise. Women are motivated more by improved attractiveness, muscle "toning," and body mass management. Women have greater preference for supervised and lower-body exercise. Intrasexual competition, mate selection, and the drive for muscularity are likely fundamental causes of exercise behaviors in men and women. Men and women increase muscle size and strength after weeks of strength training, but women experience greater relative strength improvements depending on age and muscle group. Men exhibit higher strength training injury rates. No sex difference exists in strength loss and muscle soreness after muscle-damaging exercise.

Abstract
Introduction: If the aim is to increase maximal strength (MSt) and muscle mass, resistance training (RT) is primarily used to achieve these outcomes. However, research indicates that long-duration stretching sessions of up to 2 h per day can also provide sufficient stimuli to induce muscle growth. In RT literature, sex-related differences in adaptations are widely discussed, however, there is a lack of evidence addressing the sex-related effects on MSt and muscle thickness (MTh) of longer duration stretch training. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of 6 weeks of daily (1 h) unilateral static stretch training of the plantar flexors using a calf-muscle stretching device. Methods: Fifty-five healthy (m = 28, f = 27), active participants joined the study. MSt and range of motion (ROM) were measured with extended and flexed knee joint, and MTh was investigated in the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius. Results: Statistically significant increases in MSt of 6%-15% (p < .001-.049, d = 0.45-1.09), ROM of 6%-21% (p < .001-.037, d = 0.47-1.38) and MTh of 4%-14% (p < .001-.005, d = 0.46-0.72) from pre-to post-test were observed, considering both sexes and both legs. Furthermore, there was a significant higher increase in MSt, MTh and ROM in male participants. In both groups, participants showed more pronounced adaptations in MSt and ROM with an extended knee joint as well as MTh in the medial head of the gastrocnemius (p < .001-.047). Results for relative MSt increases showed a similar result (p < .001-.036, d = 0.48-1.03). Discussion: Results are in accordance with previous studies pointing out significant increases of MSt, MTh and ROM due to long duration static stretch training. Both sexes showed significant increases in listed parameters however, male participants showed superior increases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We matched highly trained competitive male and female athletes using maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O<inf>2max</inf>) per kg skeletal muscle mass (SMM) to show sex differences in factors limiting V̇O<inf>2max</inf>. METHODS Thirteen highly trained male (28±3.0 yr) vs. 13 female (21.3±3.0 yr) endurance athletes and 10 male (23.9±3.8 yr) vs. 10 female sprinters (21.9±3.3 yr) performed an incremental running treadmill test until exhaustion. Main cardiorespiratory variables were measured using ergospirometry. SMM was determined using the dual X-ray absorptiometry method and a regression equation based on measured appendicular lean soft tissue. Basic hematological parameters were obtained from capillary blood samples taken before exercise. RESULTS In both endurance and sprint groups, male athletes had significantly higher muscle mass (by 8-12%) and substantially lower total fat (by 55-58%). For almost all body composition indicators, the effect size of sex differences was very large (Cohens d>1.4). Male athletes obtained significantly higher values in cardiorespiratory variables (by 12-34%) and factors related to oxygen transport (9-13%). Cohens d of the revealed differences was large or very large in both groups (0.8-2.1 in sprinters and 0.8-2.3 in endurance athletes). CONCLUSIONS Male and female competitive athletes having the same V̇̇O<inf>2max</inf> per kg SMM strongly differ in main factors limiting maximum oxygen uptake. These differences are more pronounced in endurance- than in sprint-trained athletes. The strongest differences are seen for body composition (fat, lean, and muscle mass) and central cardiac factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A comprehensive examination of the sport-specific activities performed around the time of injury is important to hypothesise injury mechanisms, develop prevention strategies, improve management, and inform future investigations. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise the current literature describing the activities performed around the time of injury in football (soccer). METHODS A systematic search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and OpenGrey. Studies were included if participants were football players aged > 13 years old and the activities performed at the time of injury were reported together with the total number of injuries. Risk of bias was assessed using an adapted version of checklists developed for prevalence studies. The activities reported by the studies were grouped to account for inconsistent reporting, and the proportion of each injury activity was calculated. Data were not meta-analysed due to high heterogeneity of methods and classification criteria. RESULTS We included 64 studies reporting on 56,740 injuries in total. ACL injures were analysed by 12 studies, ankle/foot and knee injuries were analysed by five studies, thigh injuries were analysed by four studies, hip/groin injuries were analysed by three studies, and hamstring injuries were analysed by two studies. Five studies analysed more than one type of injury and 38 studies did not specify the type of injuries analysed. Running and kicking were the predominant activities leading to thigh and hamstring injuries. Changing direction and kicking were the predominant activities leading to hip and groin injuries and duels were the predominant activities leading to ankle injuries. Duels and pressing seem the predominant activities leading to ACL injuries, while results for other knee and general injuries were inconsistent. CONCLUSIONS A qualitative summary of the activities performed at the time of injury has been reported. The results need to be interpreted carefully due to the risk of bias observed in the included studies. If we are to meaningfully progress our knowledge in this area, it is paramount that future research uses consistent methods to record and classify injuries and activities leading up to and performed at the time of injury. Abstract
Changes in the body composition of 50 Thoroughbreds colts and fillies, born between 2004 and 2010, were compared between those reared at the Hidaka Training and Research Center (Hidaka), Hokkaido, which is extremely cold in winter, and those reared at the Miyazaki Yearling Training Farm (Miyazaki), Kyushu, which is mildly cold in winter. The horses were divided into two sex groups and reared and trained in Hidaka or Miyazaki for 7 months from October of one year of age to April of two years of age. Body weight (BW), rump fat thickness (RFT), fat-free mass (FFM), and percentage of fat (%F) were used as parameters of body composition. This study revealed that BW and FFM were higher, and %F was lower in colts than in fillies at both training sites. Among colts, Miyazaki colts tended to have higher FFM values than Hidaka colts, and %F was significantly lower in Miyazaki colts than in Hidaka colts. Furthermore, from October to April, Miyazaki horses had a higher rate of increase in BW than Hidaka horses in both sexes and a higher rate of increase in FFM in colts. The higher rate of increase in FFM in Miyazaki colts suggests that training young Thoroughbreds in winter under mildly cold climate is more effective, than severely cold climate, particularly in colts.

Abstract
Several clinical trials have reported that patients with cancer cachexia can benefit from n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) supplements; however, the results have been conflicting. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of n-3 PUFAs on cancer cachexia. A search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was performed to identify the included randomized controlled trials. Trials including patients with cancer cachexia who were administered a course of n-3 PUFAs were included. A meta-analysis on body weight, lean body weight, proinflammatory factors, quality of life, and median duration of survival was conducted. A total of 12 randomized controlled trials with 1184 patients were included. No effect on body weight (standard mean difference [SMD], 0.10; 95% CI, -0.06 to 0.26; P = .236), lean body weight (SMD, -0.17; 95% CI, -0.36 to 0.03, P = .095), or proinflammatory factors (interleukin-6: SMD, 0.31; 95% CI, -0.14 to 0.75; P = .18; tumor necrosis factor-α: SMD, -0.85; 95% CI, -2.39 to 0.69; P = .28) was observed. The use of n-3 PUFAs was associated with a significant improvement in quality of life (SMD, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.01-1.40; P = .048) and median duration of survival (median survival ratio, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.02-1.19; P = .014). For patients with cancer cachexia, our meta-analysis indicated that n-3 PUFAs improved quality of life and survival, but not body weight.

Abstract
It is difficult to easily estimate skeletal muscle (SM) volume in children. We aimed to develop regression-based prediction equations to estimate the total body and regional SM volume using calliper measurements of skinfold thickness and limb circumference and to investigate the validity of these equations. In total, 142 healthy, prepubertal, Japanese children, aged 6-12 years, were divided into two groups: the model development group (sixty boys, thirty-eight girls) and the validation group (twenty-six boys, eighteen girls). Contiguous magnetic resonance images were obtained from the first cervical vertebra to the ankle joints as reference data. SM volume was calculated from the summation of the digitised cross-sectional areas. Limb and waist circumferences were measured at mid-upper arm, mid-thigh, maximal calf and at the level of umbilicus. Each girth was corrected for subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness, as estimated by skinfold thickness measurements. Skinfold thickness was measured at the posterior upper arm, anterior thigh, medial calf and lateral to the umbilicus, using callipers. Significant correlations were observed between the site-matched SM volume, measured by MRI, and each corrected girth × standing height value in the model development group. When these SM volume prediction equations were applied to the validation group, the measured total body and regional SM volume were similar to the predicted values. These results suggest that the anthropometric prediction equations developed in this study provide reliable information about the total and regional SM volume in prepubertal Japanese children, with varying degrees of estimation accuracy for each region.

Abstract
Resistance training (RT) progress is determined by an individual's muscle strength, measured by one-repetition maximum (1RM). However, this evaluation is time-consuming and has some safety concerns. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a valid and easy-to-use method to assess skeletal muscle mass (SMM). Although BIA measurements are often correlated with muscle strength, few studies of 1RM for RT and BIA measurements are available. This observational study examined the relationship between 1RM and BIA measurements and developed BIA-based prediction models for 1RM. Thirty-five healthy young Japanese adults were included. SMM and the skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) were measured using the BIA device. In addition, dominant-leg 1RM was measured using a unilateral leg-press (LP) machine. The correlations between BIA measurements and 1RM were calculated, and simple regression analyses were performed to predict 1RM from the BIA variables. The results showed significant correlations between 1RM and dominant-leg SMM (R = 0.845, P = 0.0001) and SMI (R = 0.910, P = 0.0001). The prediction models for 1RM for LP derived from SMM of the dominant leg and SMI were Y = 8.21x + 8.77 (P = 0.0001), R2 = 0.73, and Y = 15.53x - 36.33 (P = 0.0001), R2 = 0.83, respectively. Our results indicated that BIA-based SMI might be used to predict 1RM for LP accurately.

BACKGROUND Changes in sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and volume may contribute to neck-related concussion symptoms and whiplash-associated disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data on healthy SCM morphology can provide information that may lead to targeted treatment protocols. OBJECTIVES To examine sex-related differences in MRI-based SCM CSA, SCM volume and neck area in healthy young adults, to analyze associations between measurements and participant variables and to assess inter-rater reliability for measurement quantification. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS 13 males and 14 females underwent MRI scans. Slices obtained from C3-C7 were analyzed by three raters. SCM CSA at C4, total SCM volume from C3-C7 and neck area at C4 were quantified. Measurements were calculated as absolute and normalized values by body mass. Multivariable regression was used to analyze associations between normalized measurement values and participant variables. Inter-rater reliability was determined using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). RESULTS Females had significantly lower normalized overall average SCM CSA (mean difference 1.3 mm2/kg (95% CI 0.4-2.2, p = 0.006) and total SCM volume (mean difference 140.8 mm3/kg (95% CI 66.1-215.5, p < 0.001) than males. Regression models indicated female sex was associated with lower normalized overall average SCM CSA (p = 0.004) and total SCM volume (p < 0.001). Inter-rater reliability was excellent for SCM CSA (ICC3,3 = 0.909), SCM volume (ICC3,3 = 0.910) and neck area (ICC3,3 = 0.995). CONCLUSIONS These results enhance our understanding of sex-related differences in SCM morphology and will inform future research and clinical practice related to cervical muscle injury.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of total body and appendicular bone mineral content (BMC, kg) and bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm2) in Japanese collegiate Sumo wrestlers. A total of 54 male college Sumo wrestlers were recruited for the study and assigned to two groups according to their body weight (middleweight, 85–115 kg, n = 23 and heavyweight, > 115 kg, n = 31). The BMC, BMD, fat mass, and lean soft tissue mass (LSTM) values were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for the total body and appendicular regions. Heavyweight Sumo wrestlers had significantly higher body weight, fat mass, and LSTM compared to middleweight Sumo wrestlers. The mean total body and regional BMC values were significantly higher in heavyweight than in middleweight Sumo wrestlers. The total body and leg BMD was significantly higher in heavyweight than in middleweight Sumo wrestlers, and was significantly correlated with body weight, but not arm BMD. The present study indicates that BMC and BMD might not sharply elevate among even heavyweight athletes, although heavier Sumo wrestlers had a greater BMC and BMD.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the relationship between dietary fiber intake and skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, and muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) among men and women with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods This cross-sectional study involved 260 men and 200 women with T2D. Percent skeletal muscle mass (%) or percent body fat mass (%) was calculated as (appendicular muscle mass [kg] or body fat mass [kg]/body weight [kg]) × 100. MFR was calculated as appendicular muscle mass divided by body fat mass. Information about dietary fiber intake (g/day) was obtained from a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire. Results Dietary fiber intake was correlated with percent body fat mass (r = -0.163, p = 0.021), percent skeletal muscle mass (r = 0.176, p = 0.013), and MFR (r = 0.157, p = 0.026) in women. However, dietary fiber intake was not correlated with percent body fat mass (r = -0.100, p = 0.108), percent skeletal muscle mass (r = 0.055, p = 0.376), and MFR (r = 0.065, p = 0.295) in men. After adjusting for covariates, dietary fiber intake was correlated with percent body fat mass (β = 0.229, p = 0.009), percent skeletal muscle mass (β = 0.364, p < 0.001), and MFR (β = 0.245, p = 0.006) in women. Further, dietary fiber intake was related to percent skeletal muscle mass (β = 0.221, p = 0.008) and tended to be correlated with percent body fat mass (β = 0.148, p = 0.071) in men. Conclusion Dietary fiber intake was correlated with skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, and MFR among women with T2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical disc diseases have been treated by means of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA). Nevertheless, some patients will experience a mobility failure in their cervical prostheses over time because of heterotopic ossification (HO). Aim of this study is to investigate the role of gender in long-term outcomes after CDA. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective, single-center study including patients who underwent single-level CDA with a Bryan prosthesis was performed, including a narrative review about gender differences in both structural and biomechanical features of the cervical spine. RESULTS Study patients (14M, 30F) had an average follow-up period of 9,8 ± 3,2 years. Significant differences emerged between genders for specific items in Neck Disability Index (NDI) preoperative evaluation, with females reporting worse pain scores (p=0.05). After stratification by age we report a higher preoperative overall NDI score for female patients under 36 years of age (p=0.03). In an intergender, BMI-specific comparison we also found a significant difference in NDI preoperative score with normal-weight male patients faring worse than overweight ones (p= 0.05). At a radiological level, we found a tendency towards a higher HO incidence in male patients (62% males, 17% females, p=0.06). Women's cervical spine has peculiar features including bone structure, muscular action, soft-tissue response, genetic and epigenetic response to osteoarthritis. CONCLUSION The incidence of mobility failure in our series of single-level CDA was lower in females. Several gender specific factors both in static and dynamic features may play a significant role in spinal pathology and CDA long-term radiological outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although shoulder conditions have been reported as an adverse event after intramuscular vaccination in the deltoid muscle, epidemiologic data on shoulder conditions after vaccination are limited. OBJECTIVE To estimate the risk for shoulder conditions after vaccination and assess possible risk factors. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING Kaiser Permanente Southern California, a large integrated health care organization. PARTICIPANTS Kaiser Permanente Southern California members aged 3 years or older who had an intramuscular vaccination administered in the deltoid muscle between 1 April 2016 and 31 December 2017. MEASUREMENTS A natural language processing (NLP) algorithm was used to identify potential shoulder conditions among vaccinated persons with shoulder disorder diagnosis codes. All NLP-identified cases were manually chart confirmed on the basis of our case definition. The characteristics of vaccinated persons with and without shoulder conditions were compared. RESULTS Among 3 758 764 administered vaccinations, 371 cases of shoulder condition were identified, with an estimated incidence of 0.99 (95% CI, 0.89 to 1.09) per 10 000 vaccinations. The incidence was 1.22 (CI, 1.10 to 1.35) for the adult (aged ≥18 years) and 0.05 (CI, 0.02 to 0.14) for the pediatric (aged 3 to 17 years) vaccinated populations. In the adult vaccinated population, advanced age, female sex, an increased number of outpatient visits in the 6 months before vaccination, lower Charlson Comorbidity Index, and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine were associated with a higher risk for shoulder conditions. Among influenza vaccines, quadrivalent vaccines were associated with an increased risk for shoulder conditions. Simultaneous administration of vaccines was associated with a higher risk for shoulder conditions among elderly persons. LIMITATION Generalizability to other health care settings, use of administrative data, and residual confounding. CONCLUSION These population-based data suggest a small absolute risk for shoulder conditions after vaccination. Given the high burden of shoulder conditions, clinicians should pay attention to any factors that may further increase risks. PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) depends on population-specific prediction equations and there is no population-specific equation for predicting fat-free mass (FFM) in Malawian adolescents. This study aimed at determining the agreement between FFM measured by deuterium oxide dilution technique (the reference) and FFM by BIA; and propose BIA-based prediction equations to estimate FFM for Malawian adolescents. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study. SETTING The study was conducted in Blantyre, Malawi PARTICIPANTS: 186 Malawian adolescents aged between 10 and 18 years were included in this study. Body composition was estimated by both the BodyStat BIA analyser and the deuterium oxide dilution method. RESULTS BIA inbuilt equation underestimated FFM compared with deuterium oxide dilution (p=0.039). The new prediction equation for FFM (kg)=-4.316+ 0.425* height2(cm)/resistance (Ω)+1.287* sex (male=1, female=0)+0.307*age(years)+0.344* weight(kg)+0.019*reactance(Ω) yielded an R2 of 0.926. The equation for total body water (TBW) (kg)=-2.152 + 0.328*height2(cm)/resistance (Ω) 0.910*sex (male=1, female=0)+0.307 *age (years)+0.249*weight(kg)+0.015*reactance(Ω) yielded an R2 of 0.922. The Bland-Altman plot illustrated a good level of concordance between the FFM and TBW predicted by the new equations and the values derived using deuterium dilution method. CONCLUSIONS The new BIA prediction equations for estimating FFM and TBW could be used to assess with very good accuracy and precision the body composition of Malawian and adolescents with similar characteristics.

Abstract
Introduction: If the aim is to increase maximal strength (MSt) and muscle mass, resistance training (RT) is primarily used to achieve these outcomes. However, research indicates that long-duration stretching sessions of up to 2 h per day can also provide sufficient stimuli to induce muscle growth. In RT literature, sex-related differences in adaptations are widely discussed, however, there is a lack of evidence addressing the sex-related effects on MSt and muscle thickness (MTh) of longer duration stretch training. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of 6 weeks of daily (1 h) unilateral static stretch training of the plantar flexors using a calf-muscle stretching device. Methods: Fifty-five healthy (m = 28, f = 27), active participants joined the study. MSt and range of motion (ROM) were measured with extended and flexed knee joint, and MTh was investigated in the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius. Results: Statistically significant increases in MSt of 6%-15% (p < .001-.049, d = 0.45-1.09), ROM of 6%-21% (p < .001-.037, d = 0.47-1.38) and MTh of 4%-14% (p < .001-.005, d = 0.46-0.72) from pre-to post-test were observed, considering both sexes and both legs. Furthermore, there was a significant higher increase in MSt, MTh and ROM in male participants. In both groups, participants showed more pronounced adaptations in MSt and ROM with an extended knee joint as well as MTh in the medial head of the gastrocnemius (p < .001-.047). Results for relative MSt increases showed a similar result (p < .001-.036, d = 0.48-1.03). Discussion: Results are in accordance with previous studies pointing out significant increases of MSt, MTh and ROM due to long duration static stretch training. Both sexes showed significant increases in listed parameters however, male participants showed superior increases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Standard liver weight (SLW) is frequently used in deceased donor liver transplantation to avoid size mismatches with the recipient. However, some deceased donors (DDs) have fatty liver (FL). A few studies have reported that FL could impact liver size. To the best of our knowledge, there are no relevant SLW models for predicting liver size.
AIM To demonstrate the relationship between FL and total liver weight (TLW) in detail and present a related SLW formula.
METHODS We prospectively enrolled 212 adult DDs from West China Hospital of Sichuan University from June 2019 to February 2021, recorded their basic information, such as sex, age, body height (BH) and body weight (BW), and performed abdominal ultrasound (US) and pathological biopsy (PB). The chi-square test and kappa consistency score were used to assess the consistency in terms of FL diagnosed by US relative to PB. Simple linear regression analysis was used to explore the variables related to TLW. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to formulate SLW models, and the root mean standard error and interclass correlation coefficient were used to test the fitting efficiency and accuracy of the model, respectively. Furthermore, the optimal formula was compared with previous formulas.
RESULTS Approximately 28.8% of DDs had FL. US had a high diagnostic ability (sensitivity and specificity were 86.2% and 92.9%, respectively; kappa value was 0.70, P < 0.001) for livers with more than a 5% fatty change. Simple linear regression analysis showed that sex (R2, 0.226; P < 0.001), BH (R2, 0.241; P < 0.001), BW (R2, 0.441; P < 0.001), BMI (R2, 0.224; P < 0.001), BSA (R2, 0.454; P < 0.001) and FL (R2, 0.130; P < 0.001) significantly impacted TLW. In addition, multiple linear regression analysis showed that there was no significant difference in liver weight between the DDs with no steatosis and those with steatosis within 5%. Furthermore, in the context of hepatic steatosis, TLW increased positively (non-linear); compared with the TLW of the non-FL group, the TLW of the groups with hepatic steatosis within 5%, between 5% and 20% and more than 20% increased by 0 g, 90 g, and 340 g, respectively. A novel formula, namely, -348.6 + (110.7 x Sex [0 = Female, 1 = Male]) + 958.0 x BSA + (179.8 x FLUS [0 = No, 1 = Yes]), where FL was diagnosed by US, was more convenient and accurate than any other formula for predicting SLW.
CONCLUSION FL is positively correlated with TLW. The novel formula deduced using sex, BSA and FLUS is the optimal formula for predicting SLW in adult DDs.

Abstract
Fast walking may require a non-uniform change of dynamic stiffness among lower limb joints to deal with this daily task's demands. The change of dynamic joint stiffness may be distinct between females and males. This study aimed to test for differences in dynamic stiffness among lower limb joints in response to increased walking speed in males and females. Thirty-five participants walked in two randomized conditions: self-selected speed and fast speed (25% greater than the self-selected speed). Dynamic stiffnesses of the ankle, knee, and hip were calculated as the linear slope of the moment-angle curve's regression line during their major power absorption phase of the walking cycle. The comparison between conditions showed that the knee (p < 0.001) and hip (p = 0.031) increased their stiffness at the fast compared to self-selected speed. Ankle stiffness was not different between conditions (p = 0.818). The comparison among joints across speeds showed that the knee had a greater increase than the ankle (p = 0.001) and hip (p < 0.001), with no difference between ankle and hip (p = 0.081). The sex of the participant influenced only the ankle stiffness, in which males had greater stiffness than females (p = 0.008). These findings demonstrated that the lower limb joints changed their dynamic stiffness differently, and only the ankle stiffness was influenced by sex. The non-uniform adjustments of stiffness may provide the necessary stability and allow the individual to deal with greater demand for walking fast.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Glycemic control is essential for preventing severe complications in patients with diabetes mellitus. This study investigated the association between grip strength and glycemic control in Korean adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS From the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2,498 participants aged over 19 years that patients with diabetes mellitus who did not have a history of cardiovascular disease or cancer were selected for analysis. Grip strength was assessed using a handheld dynamometer and was represented as age-specific and sex-specific tertiles. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of glycemic control according to the grip strength tertiles. RESULTS A significantly lower probability (OR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.47 to 0.97) for glycemic control was found in the lowest tertile of grip strength compared to the highest tertile. Furthermore, a subgroup analysis by sex only found significant associations between grip strength and glycemic control in males. CONCLUSIONS Lower grip strength was associated with poor glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus, especially in males. However, further studies are needed to confirm the causal relationship between grip strength and glycemic control.

Abstract
Indirect calorimetry (IC) is considered the gold standard for assessing resting metabolic rate (RMR). However, many people do not have access to IC devices and use prediction equations for RMR estimation. Equations using fat free mass (FFM) as a predictor have been developed to estimate RMR, as a strong relationship exists between FFM and RMR. One such equation is the Nelson equation which is used by the BodPod (BP). Yet, there is limited evidence whether the Nelson equation is superior to other common equations to predict RMR. To examine the agreement between predicted RMR from common RMR equations and the BP, and RMR measured via IC. Data from 48 healthy volunteers who completed both the BP and IC were collected. Agreement between RMR measured by BP, common regression equations, and indirect caloriometry was evaluated using repeated measures ANOVA, Bland-Altman analysis and root mean square error (RMSE). Predicted RMR values from common equations and BP were significantly different from IC with the exception of the World Health Organization (WHO) equation. Large limits of agreement and RMSE values demonstrate a large amount of error at the individual level. Despite the use of FFM, the Nelson equation does not appear to be superior to other common RMR equations. Although the WHO equation presented the best option within our sample, all equations performed poorly at the individual level. Clinicians should be aware that prediction equations may significantly under- or overestimate RMR compared to IC and when an accurate value of RMR is required, IC is recommended.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle mass reduction has been implicated in insulin resistance (IR) that promotes cardiometabolic diseases. We have previously reported that arsenic exposure increases IR concomitantly with the reduction of skeletal muscle mass among individuals exposed to arsenic. The arsenic methylation capacity is linked to the susceptibility to some arsenic exposure-related diseases. However, it remains unknown whether the arsenic methylation capacity affects the arsenic-induced reduction of muscle mass and elevation of IR. Therefore, this study examined the associations between the arsenic methylation status and skeletal muscle mass measures with regard to IR by recruiting 437 participants from low- and high-arsenic exposure areas in Bangladesh. The subjects' skeletal muscle mass was estimated by their lean body mass (LBM) and serum creatinine levels. Subjects' drinking water arsenic concentrations were positively associated with total urinary arsenic concentrations and the percentages of MMA, as well as inversely associated with the percentages of DMA and the secondary methylation index (SMI). Subjects' LBM and serum creatinine levels were positively associated with the percentage of DMA and SMI, as well as inversely associated with the percentage of MMA. HOMA-IR showed an inverse association with SMI, with a confounding effect of sex. Our results suggest that reduced secondary methylation capacity is involved in the arsenic-induced skeletal muscle loss that may be implicated in arsenic-induced IR and cardiometabolic diseases.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is characterized by a decline in systemic muscle mass and physical performance. Disc degeneration also causes back muscle atrophy. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the influence of systemic muscle mass decline on back muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration compared to disc degeneration. We included 127 patients (65.54 ± 14.93 years) with back pain who underwent lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Axial T2-weighted MRI data of the L4-5 and L5-S1 levels were used to measure the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the psoas and spinal muscles. The psoas index (cm2/m2) was used as a surrogate for systemic muscle mass. The Pfirrmann grading system was used to evaluate intervertebral disc degeneration. The functional area of the back muscles was calculated by subtracting the fat infiltration area from the CSA; the functional CSA ratio was calculated by dividing the functional CSA by the CSA. Image-processing software (ImageJ; National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA) was used for analysis. Psoas index and aging significantly affected CSA and the ratio of functional CSA of the back muscles and multifidi. Disc degeneration did not significantly affect the back muscles beyond aging in patients with back pain. Males showed substantially higher CSA of the back muscles and multifidi than females; however, sex did not affect the functional CSA ratio of these muscles. Systemic muscle mass decline showed a more powerful influence on back muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration than disc degeneration. Therefore, proper evaluation of sarcopenia is needed for patients with chronic back pain and back muscle degeneration.

Abstract
Background and objective: Existing research shows that the sex differences in distance-limited ultra-cycling races decreased with both increasing race distance and increasing age. It is unknown, however, whether the sex differences in time-limited ultra-cycling races will equally decrease with increasing race distance and age. This study aimed to examine the sex differences regarding performance for time-limited ultra-cycling races (6, 12, and 24 h). Methods: Data were obtained from the online database of the Ultra-Cycling Marathon Association (UMCA) of time-limited ultra-cycling races (6, 12, and 24 h) from the years 1983–2019. A total of 18,241 race results were analyzed to compare cycling speed between men and women by calendar year, age group (<29; 30–39; 40–49; 50–59; 60–69; >70 years), and race duration. Results: The participation of both men (85.1%) and women (14.9%) increased between 1983 and 2019. The age of peak performance was between 40 and 59 years for men and between 30 and 59 years for women. Between 2000 and 2019, more men (63.1% of male participants and 52.2% of female participants) competed in 24 h races. In the 24 h races, the sex difference decreased significantly in all age groups. Men cycled 9.6% faster than women in the 12 h races and 4% faster in the 24 h races. Both women and men improved their performance significantly across the decades. Between 2000 and 2019, the improvement in the 24 h races were 15.6% for men and 21.9% for women. Conclusion: The sex differences in cycling speed decreased between men and women with increasing duration of ultra-cycling races and with increasing age. Women showed a greater performance improvement than men in the last 20 years. The average cycling speed of men and women started to converge in the 24 h races.

Abstract
Physiological strain during exercise is increased by mild dehydration (∼1%-3% body mass loss). This response may be sex-dependent, but there are no direct comparative data in this regard. This review aimed to develop a framework for future research by exploring the potential impact of sex on thermoregulatory and cardiac strain associated with exercise-induced dehydration. Sex-based comparisons were achieved by comparing trends from studies that implemented similar experimental protocols but recruited males and females separately. This revealed a higher core temperature (Tc) in response to exercise-induced dehydration in both sexes; however, it seemingly occurred at a lower percent body mass loss in females. Although less clear, similar trends existed for cardiac strain. The average female may have a lower body water volume per body mass compared with males, and therefore the same percent body mass loss between the sexes may represent a larger portion of total body water in females potentially posing a greater physiological strain. In addition, the rate at which Tc increases at exercise onset might be faster in females and induce a greater thermoregulatory challenge earlier into exercise. The Tc response at exercise onset is associated with lower sweating rates in females, which is commonly attributed to sex differences in metabolic heat production. However, a reduced sweat gland sensitivity to stimuli, lower fluid output per sweat gland, and sex hormones promoting fluid retention in females may also contribute. In conclusion, the limited evidence suggests that sex-based differences exist in thermoregulatory and cardiac strain associated with exercise-induced dehydration, and this warrants future investigations.

Abstract
This study aimed to understand the biological process related to the prevention of cardiovascular & metabolic diseases (CMD), including diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia via regular exercise. This study included 17,053 subjects aged 40–69 years in the Health Examinees Study from 2004 to 2012. Participation in regular exercise was investigated by questionnaires. Data on 42 biomarkers were collected from anthropometric measures and laboratory tests. We examined the associations between regular exercise and biomarkers using general linear models, between biomarkers and the risk of CMD using cox proportional hazard models, and the mediation effect of biomarkers using mediation analyses. Biomarker networks were constructed based on the significant differential correlations (p < 0.05) between the exercise and non-exercise groups in men and women, respectively. We observed significant mediators in 14 and 16 of the biomarkers in men and women, respectively. Triglyceride level was a noteworthy mediator in decreasing the risk of CMD with exercise, explaining 23.79% in men and 58.20% in women. The biomarker network showed comprehensive relationships and associations among exercise, biomarkers, and CMD. Body composition-related biomarkers were likely to play major roles in men, while obesity-related biomarkers seemed to be key factors in women.

Abstract
Organismic, task, and environmental constraints are known to differ between skilled male and female cricket batters during power hitting tasks. Despite these influences, the techniques used in such tasks have only been investigated in male cricket batters. This study compared power hitting kinematics between 15 male and 15 female batters ranging from university to international standard. General linear models were used to assess the effect of gender on kinematic parameters describing technique, with height and body mass as covariates. Male batters generated greater maximum bat speeds, ball launch speeds, and ball carry distances than female batters on average. Male batters had greater pelvis-thorax separation in the transverse plane at the commencement of the downswing (β = 1.14; p = 0.030) and extended their lead elbows more during the downswing (β = 1.28; p = 0.008) compared to female batters. The hypothesised effect of gender on the magnitude of wrist uncocking during the downswing was not observed (β = -0.14; p = 0.819). The causes of these differences are likely to be multi-factorial, involving aspects relating to the individual players, their history of training experiences and coaching practices, and the task of power hitting in male or female cricket.
