Abstract
The extraction of bioactive compounds is based on the application of various extraction techniques. Therefore, the stem and root bark of the plant species Morinda lucida L. were used in this research, while the extraction procedure was performed using three extraction techniques: HAE (homogenizer extraction), UAE (ultrasound extraction) as modern, and MAC (maceration) as conventional extraction technique. The presence of different classes of secondary metabolites was determined using the UHPLC method, while the content of total phenols and flavonoids was determined spectrophotometrically. The biological potential was investigated by in vitro antioxidant and enzyme assays. Different extraction technologies showed significant differences in only two classes of phenols, namely lignans and phenolic acids, which were significantly higher in HAE than in UAE and MAC. These findings highlight the significant effect of stem and bark extracts of M. lucida, opening the way for innovative industrial exploitation of these matrices.

Abstract
The escalating global burden of cardiovascular diseases is a growing concern. Numerous research studies have established that plant-derived polyphenols, including α-pinene-a monocyclic monoterpene found in various plant essential oils-have significant effects on key cardiovascular mechanisms. These effects are mediated through their influence on antioxidant systems, cellular signaling pathways, and gene transcription processes. This study investigated the protective effects of α-pinene against cardiac damage caused by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in Wistar rats. Rats were divided into four groups: a control group receiving saline, a disease control group-administered CCl4 (1 mL/kg body weight, intraperitoneally), and two treatment groups receiving α-pinene orally at doses of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg body weight alongside CCl4, to assess its dose-dependent effects. We conducted comprehensive evaluations, including assessments of serum and cardiac toxicity biomarkers, inflammatory mediators, antioxidant defense mechanisms, lipid peroxidation levels, lipid profiles, and histopathological analyses. CCl4 exposure resulted in notable increases in free fatty acids (FFA), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), phospholipids (PL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels, and a decrease in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Treatment with α-pinene at 100 mg/kg effectively counteracted these lipid profile changes. CCl4 also caused lipid oxidation and a reduction in antioxidant activities, which were restored to normal levels with α-pinene treatment at 100 mg/kg body weight. Moreover, an upsurge in inflammatory markers (interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP)) and cardiac toxicity biomarkers (creatine kinase (CK), and creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB) and troponin) induced by CCl4 intoxication was reversed by α-pinene. Histopathological studies further validated these findings. The study concludes that α-pinene, administered at a dosage of 100 mg/kg body weight, effectively alleviates cardiac injury induced by CCl4. The data suggest that α-pinene exerts its protective effects through modulation of various signaling pathways involved in CCl4-induced cardiac toxicity.

Abstract
Background: Subclinical myocardial injury (SCMI) is associated with an increased risk of poor cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes. Understanding the underlying risk factors for SCMI is crucial for the prevention and management of CVD. We hypothesized that atherogenic dyslipidemia, a combination of high triglycerides (TG) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), is associated with an increased risk of SCMI. Methods: This analysis from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES-III) included 7093 participants (age 59.3 ± 13.4 years, 52.8% women, and 49.4% White) free of CVD. Atherogenic dyslipidemia was defined as TG ≥ 150 mg/dL and HDL-C < 40 mg/dL in men or <50 mg/dL in women. A validated electrocardiographic-based cardiac infarction injury score (CIIS) ≥ 10 was considered positive for SCMI. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of different combinations of TG and HDL-C groups, including atherogenic dyslipidemia with SCMI. Results: About 22.5% (n = 1594) of participants had atherogenic dyslipidemia, and 26.3% (n = 1862) had SCMI. Compared to participants with normal TG and normal HDL-C, those with atherogenic dyslipidemia had a higher prevalence of SCMI (31.2% vs. 23.9%, p-value < 0.001). In a multivariable logistic regression model, atherogenic dyslipidemia was associated with the highest odds of SCMI followed by high TG/normal HDL-C, then low HDL-C/normal TG [OR (95% CI): 131 (1.14, 1.52), 1.13 (0.97, 1.33), and 1.01 (0.86, 1.20), respectively). Conclusions: Atherogenic dyslipidemia is associated with a higher risk of SCMI, which highlights the role of nontraditional risk factors in the development of subclinical CVD.

Abstract
CONTEXT Postprandial lipemia (PPL) is associated with increased risk of endothelial dysfunction (ED), a precursor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The effects of low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diets on ASCVD risk are uncertain; therefore, gaining a greater understanding of LCHF meals on PPL may provide valuable insights. OBJECTIVE The current systematic review investigated the effects of single LCHF meal consumption on PPL and markers of ED. DATA SOURCES CINAHL Plus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched for key terms related to endothelial function, cardiovascular disease, glycemia, lipemia, and the postprandial state with no restriction on date. DATA EXTRACTION Full-text articles were independently screened by 2 reviewers, of which 16 studies were eligible to be included in the current review. All trials reported a minimum analysis of postprandial triglycerides (PPTG) following consumption of an LCHF meal (<26% of energy as carbohydrate). Results were reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. DATA ANALYSIS Single-meal macronutrient composition was found to play a key role in determining postprandial lipid and lipoprotein responses up to 8 hours post-meal. Consumption of LCHF meals increased PPTG and may contribute to ED via reduced flow-mediated dilation and increased oxidative stress; however, energy and macronutrient composition varied considerably between studies. CONCLUSION Consumption of an LCHF meal had a negative impact on PPL based on some, but not all, single-meal studies; therefore, the contribution of LCHF meals to cardiometabolic health outcomes remains unclear. Further research is needed on specific categories of LCHF diets to establish a causal relationship between postprandial modulation of lipids/lipoproteins and impaired vascular endothelial function. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adopting a physically active lifestyle and maintaining a diet rich in antioxidants can reduce the risk of vascular diseases. Arterial stiffness is an early marker for cardiovascular diseases, indicating vascular damage. This study investigates the relationship between physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviour (SB), dietary antioxidant, trace elements intake and vascular health in men and women, with a focus on pulse wave velocity (PWV), the gold standard for assessing arterial stiffness. DESIGN This is a nationwide population-based cross-sectional study (Observation of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Luxembourg 2 (ORISCAV-LUX 2)). SETTING The study was conducted in Luxembourg, between November 2016 and January 2018. PARTICIPANTS In total, 988 participants from the ORISCAV-LUX 2 study, who were Luxembourg residents, aged 25-79 years, underwent the required physical examination, agreed to wear an accelerometer for 1 week and presented no personal history of myocardial infarction or stroke, were included in the analysis. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE PWV was assessed with the validated Complior instrument. Elastic-net models were used to investigate the associations of dietary intake (antioxidant and trace elements) and movement behaviours (PA and SB) with PWV in men and women. RESULTS The findings reveal diverse associations between PA, SB, dietary intake and PWV, with distinct patterns observed in men and women. In women, a longer median moderate-to-vigorous PA bout length (mean coefficient (β)=-0.039), a higher long-range temporal correlation (higher scaling exponent alpha) at larger time scales (>120 min; β=-1.247) and an increased intake of vitamin C (β=-1.987) and selenium (β=-0.008) were associated with lower PWV. In men, a shorter median SB bout length (β=0.019) and a lower proportion of SB time accumulated in bouts longer than 60 min (β=1.321) were associated with lower PWV. Moreover, a higher daily intake of polyphenols (β=-0.113) and selenium (β=-0.004) was associated with lower PWV in men. CONCLUSION This study underscores the multifaceted nature of the associations between movement behaviours and dietary intake with PWV, as well as sex differences. These findings highlight the significance of considering both movement behaviours and dietary antioxidant intake in cardiovascular health assessments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The presence of sensory impairment among older age cohorts exerts a significant impact on both individuals and society generally. Although the impact of dietary patterns on health is vital across all stages of life, there still a paucity of comprehensive research on the association between dietary variety and sensory impairments. OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential relationship between dietary diversity and the prevalence of visual and hearing impairment or dual sensory impairments (visual and hearing impairment) among the oldest old population. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study relied on data obtained from the 2018 survey conducted by the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Subjects aged 80 and older with complete vision and hearing data were included in the study. Multivariate logistic regression models were developed to examine the association between dietary components and visual and hearing impairment while controlling for age, gender, socioeconomic demographic factors, living habits, other food habits, and general health status. RESULTS The study included 10,093 participants, with an average age of 92.29 ± 7.75 years. Vision and hearing function were assessed based on the ability to distinguish the direction of the break in the circle and the requirement for hearing aids, respectively. Upon controlling for confounding variables, individuals with a greater Dietary Diversity Score (DDS, the number of food groups, range: 1-11) had a reduced likelihood of experiencing visual impairment (odds ratio [OR] = 0.944, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.915-0.974) and dual sensory impairment (OR = 0.930, 95% CI, 0.905-0.955). In comparison to the low dietary variety group (insufficient dietary diversity, DDS < 4), the high dietary diversity group (sufficient dietary diversity, DDS ≥ 4) exhibited a decreased risk of visual impairment (OR = 0.820, 95% CI, 0.713-0.944) and dual sensory impairment (OR = 0.751, 95% CI, 0.667-0.846). However, no statistically significant correlation was observed between dietary diversity and the presence of only hearing impairment (OR = 0.924, 95% CI, 0.815-1.047) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: The synthesis of research findings suggests that following diverse dietary patterns and healthy nutritional practices may be an effective and affordable way to prevent age-related decline in visual impairment and dual sensory impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endothelial function declines with age and plays a critical role in cardiovascular health. Therefore, investigating endothelial function in successful aging models, such as centenarians, is of interest. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery is the gold standard for measuring endothelial function in vivo in humans. Therefore, we investigated, for the first time, the FMD of the brachial artery in a group of healthy centenarians. METHODS Selected as part of the ABCD project (nutrition, cardiovascular wellness, and diabetes) centenarians (aged ≥100 years) living in the municipalities of Madonie (Palermo, Italy) were compared with a younger (aged <65 years) sex-matched control group from the ABCD general cohort. FMD of the brachial artery was measured in all participants using a real-time computed video analysis system for B-mode ultrasound images. Body composition (bioimpedance), carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were also measured. RESULTS Eleven participants (males 36.4 %; age: 101 ± 1 years) out of 28 healthy centenarians successfully cooperated with the FMD test procedures, which require remaining with the upper limb immobile for approximately 10 min. This subgroup was compared with a control group of 76 healthy and younger individuals (males 36.8 %; aged: 41 ± 14 years; P < 0.001). Centenarians exhibited better endothelial function than the control group (FMD: 12.1 ± 4.3 vs 8.6 ± 5.3 %; P < 0.05). The carotid IMT was higher in the centenarian group than in the control group (0.89 ± 0.09 vs 0.56 ± 0.18 mm; P < 0.001), whereas the ABI was comparable between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS This small group of centenarians demonstrated an unusually favorable endothelial function, which may contribute to their unique aging profile. Further research is needed to determine whether FMD is a valid prognostic marker for successful aging.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a notable surge in the popularity of beetroot-based dietary supplements, driven by their rich nitrate composition. Several types of beetroot-based dietary supplements can be found in markets worldwide; however, ensuring the safety of dietary supplements is a crucial consideration, as there is limited evidence on their safety, especially for older populations. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a nitrate-rich beetroot extract in older participants taking supplements over 12 weeks. The participants were randomly assigned to receive 20 g daily of beetroot extract or a matching placebo. The safety and tolerability of the supplementation were evaluated as the occurrence of adverse events and anthropometric, biochemical, and hemodynamic parameters were measured. No serious adverse events were reported in any group. Anthropometric, biochemical, and hemodynamic parameter changes between the baseline and the end of the study were not statistically significant in either group. However, interestingly, the group receiving beetroot extract supplementation exhibited a notable increase in plasma nitrate levels (p = 0.076, f = 0.50) and showed a decrease in insulin levels (p = 0.026, f = 0.59). In conclusion, we found that 20 g of beetroot extract supplementation for 12 weeks was safe and well tolerated in older participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sedentary behavior has been shown to negatively affect parameters of endothelial function and central hemodynamics, both of which are closely associated with vascular health. Exercise prior to sedentary behavior has demonstrated potential as a preventive strategy to mitigate these detrimental effects. To evaluate the impact of exercise prior to sedentary behavior on vascular health parameters in the adult population, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, synthesizing the available body of knowledge. METHODS A literature search was carried out in 6 databases. For each outcome, standard error and mean difference or standardized mean difference were calculated, as appropriate. An analysis was performed using a random effects model with a 95% confidence interval, using the inverse variance statistical method. Risk of bias assessment was performed using ROB2 and considerations for crossover trials. The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE system. RESULTS Exercise performed prior to prolonged sedentary behavior resulted in increased flow-mediated vasodilation at the first and third hours of sedentary time, compared with the control condition of sedentary behavior without prior exercise [MD: 1.51% (95% CI: 0.57 to 2.45) and MD: 1.36% (95% CI: 0.56 to 2.16), respectively]. Moreover, prior exercise led to increased shear rate at the first and third hours of sedentary time [MD: 7.70 s^-1 (95% CI: 0.79 to 14.61) and MD: 5.21 s^-1 (95% CI: 1.77 to 8.43), respectively]. Furthermore, it increased blood flow at the third hour [SMD: 0.40 (95%CI: 0.07 to 0.72)], compared with the control condition of prolonged sedentary behavior without prior exercise. Regarding hemodynamic parameters, exercise prior to prolonged sedentary behavior decreased mean arterial pressure during the first and third hours of sedentary behavior [MD: -1.94 mmHg (95% CI: -2.77 to -1.11) and MD: -1.90 mmHg (95% CI: -3.27 to -0.53), respectively], and an increase in heart rate during the first hour [MD: 4.38 beats per minute (95%CI: 2.78 to 5.98)] compared with the control condition of prolonged sedentary behavior without prior exercise. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this research suggest that prior exercise may prevent the impairment of vascular health parameters caused by sedentary behavior. However, the quality of the evidence was estimated as moderate. Therefore, further experimental studies and high-quality clinical trials are needed in this field to strengthen the results and conclusions drawn. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42023393686.

Abstract
The relationship between phthalates, a group of chemical pollutants classified as endocrine disruptors, and oxidative stress is not fully understood. The aim of the present hospital-based study was to explore the associations between circulating levels of 10 phthalate metabolites and 8 biomarkers of oxidative stress in adipose tissue. The study population (n = 143) was recruited in two hospitals in the province of Granada (Spain). Phthalate metabolite concentrations were analyzed by isotope diluted online-TurboFlow-LC-MS/MS in serum samples, while oxidative stress markers were measured by commercially available kits in adipose tissue collected during routine surgery. Statistical analyses were performed by MM estimators' robust linear regression and weighted quantile sum regression. Mainly, positive associations were observed of monomethyl phthalate (MMP), monoiso-butyl phthalate (MiBP), and mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP) (all low molecular weight phthalates) with glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), while an inverse association was found between monoiso-nonyl phthalate (MiNP) (high molecular weight phthalate) and the same biomarkers. WQS analyses showed significant effects of the phthalate mixture on GSH (β = -30.089; p-value = 0.025) and GSSG levels (β = -19.591; p-value = 0.030). Despite the limitations inherent to the cross-sectional design, our novel study underlines the potential influence of phthalate exposure on redox homeostasis, which warrants confirmation in further research.

Abstract
Peripheral vascular dysfunction, measured as flow-mediated dilation (FMD), is present across all phases of stroke recovery and elevates the risk for recurrent cardiovascular events. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to characterize baseline FMD in individuals' poststroke, with consideration for each phase of stroke recovery. Three databases (PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase) were searched between January 1, 2000 and October 12, 2023 for studies that examined baseline FMD in stroke. Three reviewers conducted abstract and full-text screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. A random effects model was used to estimate FMD across studies. Meta-regression was used to examine the impact of age and time since stroke (acute, subacute, chronic) on FMD. Twenty-eight studies with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke were included. Descriptive statistics for the demographics and FMD values of each study are presented. For the meta-analysis, average estimate FMD was 3.9% (95% CI: 2.5-5.3%). We report a large amount of heterogeneity (Cochrane's Q P value <0.001, and I2 = 99.6%). Differences in average age and the time poststroke between studies were not significantly associated with differences in FMD values. Despite the large heterogeneity for FMD values across studies, our primary finding suggests that FMD remains impaired across all phases of stroke.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This systematic review and meta-analysis offers invaluable insight into poststroke vascular function. Despite the inherent heterogeneity among the 28 studies analyzed, we report that peripheral vascular dysfunction, as quantified by flow-mediated dilation, exists across all stages of stroke recovery. This finding underscores the importance for interventions that focus on improving vascular health and secondary stroke prevention.

Abstract
Family history of hypertension is associated with early autonomic dysfunction and increased oxidative stress. These alterations have been found to be reinforced by the overweight factor. Conversely, an active lifestyle is effective in improving the mechanisms regulating blood pressure control. Hence, we ought to investigate the effects of an active lifestyle on the hemodynamic, autonomic and oxidative stress parameters in individuals carrying both family history of hypertension and overweight risk factors. Fifty-six normotensive males were divided into four groups: eutrophic offspring of normotensive parents (EN, n = 12), eutrophic and inactive with hypertensive parents (EH, n = 14), overweight and inactive with hypertensive parents (OH, n = 13), and overweight and physically active with hypertensive parents (OAH, n = 17). Cardiovascular autonomic modulation was assessed by heart rate (HRV) and blood pressure (BPV) variability indexes. Oxidative stress included pro/antioxidant markers and nitrite concentration. Inactive offspring of hypertensive parents (EH and OH) showed higher LFSBP (vs EN), an indicator of sympathetic outflow to the vasculature and reduced anti-oxidant activity (vs EN), while higher pro-oxidant markers were found exclusively in OH (vs EN and EH). Conversely, the OAH group showed bradycardia, higher vagally-mediated HFabs index (vs OH and EN), lower sympathovagal balance (vs OH) and preserved LFSBP. Yet, the OAH showed preserved pro/antioxidant markers and nitrite levels. Our findings indicates that overweight offspring of hypertensive parents with an active lifestyle have improved hemodynamic, cardiac autonomic modulation and oxidative stress parameters compared to their inactive peers.

Abstract
Aim The social environment (SE), including social contacts, norms and support, is an understudied element of the living environment which impacts health. We aim to comprehensively summarize the evidence on the association between the SE and risk factors of cardiometabolic disease (CMD). Methods We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis based on studies published in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection from inception to 16 February 2021. Studies that used a risk factor of CMD, e.g., HbA1c or blood pressure, as outcome and social environmental factors such as area-level deprivation or social network size as independent variables were included. Titles and abstracts were screened in duplicate. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Data appraisal and extraction were based on the study protocol published in PROSPERO. Data were synthesized through vote counting and meta-analyses. Results From the 7521 records screened, 168 studies reported 1050 associations were included in this review. Four meta-analyses based on 24 associations suggested that an unfavorable social environment was associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic risk factors, with three of them being statistically significant. For example, individuals that experienced more economic and social disadvantage had a higher "CVD risk scores" (OR = 1.54, 95%CI: 1.35 to 1.84). Of the 458 associations included in the vote counting, 323 (71%) pointed towards unfavorable social environments being associated with higher CMD risk. Conclusion Higher economic and social disadvantage seem to contribute to unfavorable CMD risk factor profiles, while evidence for other dimensions of the social environment is limited.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Complexity in healthcare systems has been arbitrarily defined as tasks or systems ranging from complicated to intractable, with a general view of these not being 'simple'. Complexity in healthcare systems in first-world countries has been well elucidated, however, data from third-world countries is still scant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present four cases each from three different organ systems-chronic kidney disease, alcohol use disorder, and heart failure-in the backdrop of our healthcare organization. We present our analysis of the complexities faced clinically and, in our local healthcare system which led to these events. RESULTS Analysis of these cases showed that patients with chronic kidney disease had vertebral-spinal pathologies due to poor infection control measures during haemodialysis. All these patients were young with a long history of secondary hypertension. In patients with alcohol use disorder, a common theme of how government regulations and peer pressure promote alcohol use is analysed. In the four patients with unexplained heart failure, vascular health is viewed as a fractal dimension and the various factors affecting vascular health are elaborated. CONCLUSION Complexities exist clinically in making a diagnosis, and organizationally, in the variables and nodes dictating patient outcomes. Clinical complexities cannot be simplified but have to be navigated in an optimized way to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Postmastectomy syndrome (PMS) is a complex neurovascular set of symptoms that develops in most patients after breast cancer (BC) treatment and significantly reduces the quality of life. One of the potential mechanisms of its occurrence is considered to be an endothelial dysfunction. The possible method of reducing manifestation of endothelial dysfunction is systematic aerobic dynamic training. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of 12-week aerobic dynamic training program of moderate intensity on the endothelial dysfunction laboratory markers and life quality in patients with PMS. MATERIAL AND METHODS Single-center prospective randomized trial included 40 patients with PMS divided into study (20 patients) and comparative (20 patients) groups, as well as 20 healthy female volunteers. The expression level of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) were evaluated in all participants at baseline by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method, and additionally psychological and physical component of health by SF-36 questionnaire were assessed in patients with PMS. Patients of study group received a course of 12-week partially controlled aerobic dynamic training of moderate intensity lasting 45 minutes with frequency equal 5 times per week. Patients with PMS were re-evaluated for ICAM-1 and PECAM-1, as well as for life quality. RESULTS The group of patients with PMS after BC treatment had increased level of ICAM-1 in long-term period, that may indicate endothelial dysfunction. Statistically significant decrease of endothelial dysfunction laboratory markers was revealed in patients with PMS, who underwent the course of cardiorespiratory training. In the same time, the dynamics of changes in ICAM-1 was higher in the study group than in comparative group. Further, improvement of physical and psychological components of health by SF-36 questionnaire was found. CONCLUSIONS The program of cardiorespiratory trainings of moderate intensity in patients, who had BC treatment a year ago, decreases intercellular adhesion molecules level that may show an improvement of endothelial dysfunction.

Abstract
Introduction Mental stress has been identified as a trigger of cardiovascular events. A single episode of stress can induce acute impairments in endothelial function in healthy adults. Importantly, during stressful periods, individuals often resort to unhealthy behaviors, such as increased consumption of high-fat foods, which is also known to negatively impact endothelial function. Therefore, this study examined whether consumption of a high-fat meal would further exacerbate the negative effect of mental stress on vascular function. Methods In a randomized, counterbalanced, cross- over, postprandial intervention study, 21 healthy males and females ingested a high-fat (56.5 g fat) or a low-fat (11.4 g fat) meal 1.5 h before an 8-min mental stress task (Paced-Auditory-Serial-Addition-Task, PASAT). Plasma triglyceride (TAG) concentration was assessed pre-and post-meal. Forearm blood flow (FBF), blood pressure (BP), and cardiovascular activity were assessed pre-meal at rest and post-meal at rest and during stress. Endothelial function, measured by brachial flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) was assessed pre-meal and 30 and 90 min following mental stress. Results Plasma TAG concentration was significantly increased following the high-fat meal compared to the low-fat condition. Mental stress induced similar increases in peripheral vasodilation, BP, and cardiovascular activity, and impaired FMD 30 min post-stress, in both conditions. FMD remained significantly impaired 90 min following stress in the high-fat condition only, suggesting that consumption of fat attenuates the recovery of endothelial function following mental stress. Discussion Given the prevalence of fat consumption during stressful periods among young adults, these findings have important implications for dietary choices to protect the vasculature during periods of stress.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Approximately 10% of the adults with hypertension fail to achieve the recommended blood pressure treatment targets on 3 antihypertensive medications or require ≥ 4 medications to achieve goal. These patients with 'resistant hypertension' have an increased risk of target organ damage, adverse clinical events, and all-cause mortality. Although lifestyle modification is widely recommended as a first-line approach for the management of high blood pressure, the effects of lifestyle modifications in patients with resistant hypertension has not been widely studied. This review aims to provide an overview of the emerging evidence on the benefits of lifestyle modifications in patients with resistant hypertension, reviews potential mechanisms by which lifestyles may reduce blood pressure, and discusses the clinical implications of the recent findings in this field. RECENT FINDINGS Evidence from single-component randomized clinical trials demonstrated that aerobic exercise, weight loss and dietary modification can reduce clinic and ambulatory blood pressure in patients with resistant hypertension. Moreover, evidence from multi-component trials involving exercise and dietary modification and weight management can facilitate lifestyle change, reduce clinic and ambulatory blood pressure, and improve biomarkers of cardiovascular risk. This new evidence supports the efficacy of lifestyle modifications added to optimized medical therapy in reducing blood pressure and improving cardiovascular risk biomarkers in patients with resistant hypertension. These findings need to be confirmed in larger studies, and the persistence of benefit over extended follow-up needs further study.

Abstract
Aging accompanied by several age-related complications, is a multifaceted inevitable biological progression involving various genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The major factor in this process is oxidative stress, caused by an abundance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER). ROS and RNS pose a threat by disrupting signaling mechanisms and causing oxidative damage to cellular components. This oxidative stress affects both the ER and mitochondria, causing proteopathies (abnormal protein aggregation), initiation of unfolded protein response, mitochondrial dysfunction, abnormal cellular senescence, ultimately leading to inflammaging (chronic inflammation associated with aging) and, in rare cases, metastasis. RONS during oxidative stress dysregulate multiple metabolic pathways like NF-κB, MAPK, Nrf-2/Keap-1/ARE and PI3K/Akt which may lead to inappropriate cell death through apoptosis and necrosis. Inflammaging contributes to the development of inflammatory and degenerative diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and retinopathy. The body's antioxidant systems, sirtuins, autophagy, apoptosis, and biogenesis play a role in maintaining homeostasis, but they have limitations and cannot achieve an ideal state of balance. Certain interventions, such as calorie restriction, intermittent fasting, dietary habits, and regular exercise, have shown beneficial effects in counteracting the aging process. In addition, interventions like senotherapy (targeting senescent cells) and sirtuin-activating compounds (STACs) enhance autophagy and apoptosis for efficient removal of damaged oxidative products and organelles. Further, STACs enhance biogenesis for the regeneration of required organelles to maintain homeostasis. This review article explores the various aspects of oxidative damage, the associated complications, and potential strategies to mitigate these effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biological ageing is tightly linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to investigate the relationship between Life's Essential 8 (LE8), a currently updated measure of cardiovascular health (CVH), and biological ageing. METHODS This cross-sectional study selected adults ≥ 20 years of age from the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. LE8 scores (range 0-100) were obtained from measurements based on American Heart Association definitions, divided into health behavior and health factor scores. Biological ageing was assessed by different methods including phenotypic age, phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel), biological age and biological age acceleration (BioAgeAccel). Correlations were analyzed by weighted linear regression and restricted cubic spline models. RESULTS Of the 11,729 participants included, the mean age was 47.41 ± 0.36 years and 5983 (51.01%) were female. The mean phenotypic and biological ages were 42.96 ± 0.41 and 46.75 ± 0.39 years, respectively, and the mean LE8 score was 67.71 ± 0.35. After adjusting for potential confounders, higher LE8 scores were associated with lower phenotypic age, biological age, PhenoAgeAccel, and BioAgeAccel, with nonlinear dose-response relationships. Negative associations were also found between health behavior and health factor scores and biological ageing, and were stronger for health factors. In health factor-specific analyses, the β negativity was greater for blood glucose and blood pressure. The inverse correlations of LE8 scores with phenotypic age and biological age in the stratified analyses remained solid across strata. CONCLUSIONS LE8 and its subscale scores were strongly negatively related to biological ageing. Encouraging optimal CVH levels may be advantageous in preventing and slowing down ageing.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifaceted condition that increases the possibility of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. MetS includes obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, endothelial dysfunction, and platelet hyperactivity. There is a concerning rise in the occurrence and frequency of MetS globally. The rising incidence and severity of MetS need a proactive, multipronged strategy for identifying and treating those affected. For many MetS patients, achieving recommended goals for healthy fat intake, blood pressure control, and blood glucose management may require a combination of medicine therapy, lifestyles, nutraceuticals, and others. However, it is essential to note that lifestyle modification should be the first-line therapy for MetS. In addition, MetS requires pharmacological, nutraceutical, or other interventions. This review aimed to bring together the etiology, molecular mechanisms, and dietary strategies to combat hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, and platelet dysfunction in individuals with MetS.

Abstract
In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the recent findings about the treatment of neovascular retinal diseases. The use of conventional drugs and nutraceuticals endowed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may support conventional therapies will be considered, with the final aim of achieving risk reduction (prevention) and outcome improvement (cooperation between treatments) of such sight-threatening proliferative retinopathies. For this purpose, we consider a medicinal product one that contains well-defined compound(s) with proven pharmacological and therapeutic effects, usually given for the treatment of full-blown diseases. Rarely are prescription drugs given for preventive purposes. A dietary supplement refers to a compound (often an extract or a mixture) used in the prevention or co-adjuvant treatment of a given pathology. However, it must be kept in mind that drug-supplement interactions may exist and might affect the efficacy of certain drug treatments. Moreover, the distinction between medicinal products and dietary supplements is not always straightforward. For instance, melatonin is formulated as a medicinal product for the treatment of sleep and behavioral problems; at low doses (usually below 1 mg), it is considered a nutraceutical, while at higher doses, it is sold as a psychotropic drug. Despite their lower status with respect to drugs, increasing evidence supports the notion of the beneficial effects of dietary supplements on proliferative retinopathies, a major cause of vision loss in the elderly. Therefore, we believe that, on a patient-by-patient basis, the administration of nutraceuticals, either alone or in association, could benefit many patients, delaying the progression of their disease and likely improving the efficacy of pharmaceutical drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND If retinal indices of neurodegeneration are to be biomarkers for the monitoring of cerebral neurodegeneration, it is important to establish whether potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia are associated with retinal neurodegenerative changes. OBJECTIVE To study associations of dementia risk factors with retinal sensitivity, an index of retinal neural function, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, an index of retinal neural structure. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from The Maastricht Study (up to 5,666 participants, 50.5% men, mean age 59.7), and investigated associations with regression analyses (adjusted for potential confounders). RESULTS Most risk factors under study (i.e., hyperglycemia, unhealthy diet, lower cardiorespiratory fitness, smoking, alcohol consumption, and hypertension) were significantly associated with lower retinal sensitivity and lower RNFL thickness. CONCLUSION Findings of this population-based study support the concept that retinal neural indices may be biomarkers for the monitoring of therapeutic strategies that aim to prevent early-stage cerebral neurodegeneration and, ultimately, dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Erchen decoction, a traditional Chinese medicine formula, can reduce the level of oxidative stress for the treatment of dyslipidemia phlegm-dampness retention syndrome (DPDRS); however, studies have not elucidated the mechanism underlying its metabolic action. Here, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomic techniques were utilized to characterize the in vivo effects of Erchen decoction in achieving reduction of oxidative stress levels and understand the potential metabolic mechanisms of action. METHODS We constructed a DPDRS animal model using a multifactorial composite modeling approach, and Erchen decoction was administered by gavage. We employed LC-MS-based metabolomic techniques in combination with serum-associated factors, gene transcription, methylation detection, and hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS In this study, the constructed animal model of DPDRS had satisfactory quality. Erchen decoction treatment reduced the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, t total cholesterol and riglyceride; it improved the endothelial structure, increased levels of serum β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate and glutathione concentrations, increased aortic phosphoserine aminotransferase and phosphoserine phosphatase gene expression levels, and decreased aortic phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase methylation level. A total of 64 differential metabolites were obtained using LC-MS assay, and 34 differential metabolic pathways were obtained after enrichment. CONCLUSIONS Erchen decoction treatment of DPDRS mice reversed lipid indexes, improved vascular endothelial structure, increased serum and aortic anti-oxidative stress factor concentration and expression levels, and decreased methylation levels, thereby reducing oxidative stress and protecting vascular endothelium. Tricarboxylic acid cycle and metabolic pathways of serum glutamine, serine, tryptophan, pyrimidine, and pyruvate were the most relevant metabolic pathways involved in reducing oxidative stress levels by Erchen decoction during DPDRS treatment; especially, mitochondrial redox homeostasis maintenance in endothelial cells may be crucial. In this work, the therapeutic potential of Erchen decoction for reducing the oxidative stress level in DPDRS was demonstrated; however, its in-depth mechanism is worth further exploration.

Age-related hearing loss affects a significant proportion of adults aged 60 years and above, with a prevalence of 65%. This condition has a negative impact on both physical and mental well-being, and while hearing interventions can help alleviate the effects of hearing loss, they cannot completely restore normal hearing or halt the progression of age-related hearing loss. Oxidative stress and inflammation have been identified as potential contributors to this condition. By addressing modifiable lifestyle risk factors that exacerbate oxidative stress, there may be an opportunity to prevent hearing loss. Therefore, this narrative review provides an overview of the major modifiable lifestyle risk factors associated with age-related hearing loss, that is, exposure to noise and ototoxic chemicals, smoking, diet, physical activity, and the presence of chronic lifestyle diseases, and offers an overview of the role of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of this condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Microvascular dysfunction (MVD) is an important contributor to major clinical disease such as stroke, dementia, depression, retinopathy, and chronic kidney disease. Alcohol consumption may be a determinant of MVD. OBJECTIVE Main objectives were (1) to study whether alcohol consumption was associated with MVD as assessed in the brain, retina, skin, kidney and in the blood; and (2) to investigate whether associations differed by history of cardiovascular disease or sex. DESIGN We used cross-sectional data from The Maastricht Study (N = 3,120 participants, 50.9% men, mean age 60 years, and 27.5% with type 2 diabetes [the latter oversampled by design]). We used regression analyses to study the association between total alcohol (per unit and in the categories, i.e. none, light, moderate, high) and MVD, where all measures of MVD were combined into a total MVD composite score (expressed in SD). We adjusted all associations for potential confounders; and tested for interaction by sex, and history of cardiovascular disease. Additionally we tested for interaction with glucose metabolism status. RESULTS The association between total alcohol consumption and MVD was non-linear, i.e. J-shaped. Moderate versus light total alcohol consumption was significantly associated with less MVD, after full adjustment (beta [95% confidence interval], -0.10 [-0.19; -0.01]). The shape of the curve differed with sex (Pinteraction = 0.03), history of cardiovascular disease (Pinteraction < 0.001), and glucose metabolism status (Pinteraction = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS The present cross-sectional, population-based study found evidence that alcohol consumption may have an effect on MVD. Hence, although increasing alcohol consumption cannot be recommended as a policy, this study suggests that prevention of MVD may be possible through dietary interventions.

Abstract
This work presents an analysis of the effect on glycemic variation caused by modifying the macronutrient intake sequence in a person without a diagnosis of diabetes. In this work, three types of nutritional studies were developed: (1) glucose variation under conditions of daily intake (food mixture); (2) glucose variation under conditions of daily intake modifying the macronutrient intake sequence; (3) glucose variation after a modification in the diet and macronutrient intake sequence. The focus of this research is to obtain preliminary results on the effectiveness of a nutritional intervention based on the modification of the sequence of macronutrient intake in a healthy person during 14-day periods. The results obtained corroborate the positive effect on the glucose of consuming vegetables, fiber, or proteins before carbohydrates, decreasing the peaks in the postprandial glucose curves (vegetables: 113-117 mg/dL; proteins: 107-112 mg/dL; carbohydrates: 115-125 mg/dL) and reducing the average levels of blood glucose concentrations (vegetables: 87-95 mg/dL; proteins: 82-99 mg/dL; carbohydrates: 90-98 mg/dL). The present work demonstrates the preliminary potential of the sequence in the macronutrient intake for the generation of alternatives of prevention and solution of chronic degenerative diseases, improving the management of glucose in the organism and permeating in the reduction of weight and the state of health of the individuals.

Dietary Antioxidants, Quality of Nutrition and Cardiovascular Characteristics among Omnivores, Flexitarians and Vegetarians in Poland-The Results of Multicenter National Representative Survey WOBASZ. Abstract
Several reports have shown that more plant-based dietary patterns provide a higher intake of antioxidants compared to diets rich in meat and animal products. Data on the intake of key nutrients in cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention in relation to particular diets in countries of Central and Eastern Europe are scarce. The aim of this study was to assess quality of nutrition and CVD characteristics in a representative sample of Polish adults following different dietary patterns. Special regard was paid to the intake of natural antioxidants. The study comprised 13,318 (7159 females) randomly selected adults aged ≥ 20 years participating in the National Multicentre Health Surveys WOBASZ and WOBASZ II. The subjects were categorized into groups of omnivores (92.4%), flexitarians (7.4%) and vegetarians (0.16%) according to type of diet using the Food Frequency Questionnaire and 24 h dietary recall. The obtained results showed that neither flexitarians nor vegetarians represented better dietary habits or lifestyle behaviors compared to omnivores. Flexitarians had significantly lower daily energy intake than omnivores, but their diet was rich in total fat (above 30% of daily energy consumption) and low in fiber. Omnivores declared a higher consumption of fresh vegetables (p < 0.001), fresh fruit (p < 0.01), coffee (p < 0.01) and tea (p < 0.05, in women only) than flexitarians. Omnivores had significantly higher intake of natural antioxidants (vitamin C, E, zinc in both genders and vitamin A in men) as compared with flexitarians. Among women, the highest adherence to the intake of recommended amounts of antioxidant nutrients was noted among omnivores. Among men, vegetarians had the highest proportion of meeting the guidelines for vitamin A (77.8%), E (66.7%) and C (66.7%), while the lowest proportions were found in flexitarians (69.9%, 39.5% and 32.4%, respectively). The groups did not differ in terms of smoking and physical activity level. There were no significant differences in the analyzed CVD characteristics between omnivores and flexitarians. In women, vegetarians had substantially lower BMI than omnivores (p < 0.05) and flexitarians (p < 0.05) and a lower mean serum glucose compared with omnivores (p < 0.01) and flexitarians (p < 0.05). Vegetarians had lower prevalence of hypertension and obesity than meat eaters. In conclusion, the results of the current research showed an inappropriate intake of several nutrients, including highly potent antioxidants, irrespective of the dietary regimen. Flexitarians did not have a more favorable CVD profile than omnivores. Taking into account the growing popularity of diets with reduced animal products, there is a need to elaborate strategies providing Polish adults with guidance regarding properly balanced nutrition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular disease is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in COPD. Endothelial dysfunction is suggested to be involved in cardiovascular disease pathogenesis, and multiple studies report endothelial dysfunction in COPD. This article summarized the current knowledge on endothelial function in COPD patients. AREAS COVERED Databases were screened until November 2022 for studies using ultrasound-based flow-mediated dilation in patients with stable COPD. Pooled effect sizes were calculated using random effects model. Meta-regression analyses assessed the effects of demographic and clinical variables. EXPERT OPINION 34 studies were identified (1365 COPD patients; 617 controls). Pooled analysis demonstrated an impaired endothelial-dependent (-2.33%; 95%CI -3.30/-1.35; p < 0.001) and endothelial-independent dilation (-3.11%; 95%CI -5.14/-1.08; p = 0.003) in COPD patients when compared to non-COPD controls. Meta-regression identified that higher age, worse severity of airflow obstruction, and current smoking were significantly associated with impaired endothelial function. Studies evaluating the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions on endothelial function in COPD patients demonstrated conflicting results.

Abstract
Obesity and hypertension are intimately linked due to the various ways that the important cell types such as vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC), endothelial cells (EC), immune cells, and adipocytes, communicate with one another to contribute to these two pathologies. Adipose tissue is a very dynamic organ comprised primarily of adipocytes, which are well known for their role in energy storage. More recently adipose tissue has been recognized as the largest endocrine organ because of its ability to produce a vast number of signaling molecules called adipokines. These signaling molecules stimulate specific types of cells or tissues with many adipokines acting as indicators of adipocyte healthy function, such as adiponectin, omentin, and FGF21, which show anti-inflammatory or cardioprotective effects, acting as regulators of healthy physiological function. Others, like visfatin, chemerin, resistin, and leptin are often altered during pathophysiological circumstances like obesity and lipodystrophy, demonstrating negative cardiovascular outcomes when produced in excess. This review aims to explore the role of adipocytes and their derived products as well as the impacts of these adipokines on blood pressure regulation and cardiovascular homeostasis.

Abstract
Blood-flow-restricted exercise (BFRE) has been gaining constantly increasing interest in rehabilitation, but its influence on endothelial functions has not been well studied yet. Our aim is to examine the influence of low-resistance BFRE on endothelial functions and angiogenesis. This prospective cross-over study involved 35 young healthy adults. They conducted a 21-min low-resistant exercise with blood flow restricted by pressure cuffs placed on arms and tights. They also did the same training but without blood flow restriction. Endothelial parameters and angiogenesis biomarkers were evaluated before and up to 20 min after exercise. Both types of exercise increased Flow-Mediated Dilatation (FMD) but elevation after BFRE was more significant compared to the controls. The stiffness index decreased only after BFRE, while the reflection index decreased significantly after both types of exercise but was higher after BFRE. Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) concentrations were increased by both exercise types but elevations were higher after BFRE compared to the controls. Only BFRE elevated the mean serum CD34 protein concentration. Based on these results, we can assume that low-resistance BFR exercise stimulates angiogenesis and improves endothelial functions more significantly compared to the same training performed without blood flow restriction.

Abstract
Polyphenols-rich food has been utilized to induce a positive effect on human health. Considering that fruit and vegetable by-products (seeds, pomace, and peels) are sources of polyphenols, previous studies have investigated the effect of dietary supplementation with food by-products on cardiometabolic disorders, such as high fasting blood glucose, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Endothelial dysfunction has also been considered a cardiometabolic parameter, given that it precedes cardiovascular disease. However, there is a scarcity of narrative reviews reporting the effect of food by-product supplementation on cardiometabolic disorders in animal and human clinical trials. In this sense, the present narrative review aims to investigate the impact of fruit and vegetable by-product supplementation on cardiometabolic disorders in humans and animals, exploring the possible mechanisms whenever possible. Research articles were retrieved based on a search of the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar using the following keywords and synonyms combined: (“fruit by-products” or “food waste” or “pomace” or “bagasse” or “seeds” or “waste products”) AND (“heart disease risk factors” or “endothelial dysfunction” or “atherosclerosis”). It was shown that fruit and vegetable by-products could efficiently improve cardiometabolic disorders in patients with chronic diseases, including hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. Such effects can be induced by the polyphenols present in food by-products. In conclusion, food by-product supplementation has a positive effect on cardiometabolic disorders. However, further studies investigating the effect of food by-products on cardiometabolic disorders in humans are still necessary so that solid conclusions can be drawn.

Soybean-Derived Tripeptide Leu-Ser-Trp (LSW) Protects Human Vascular Endothelial Cells from TNFα-Induced Oxidative Stress and Inflammation via Modulating TNFα Receptors and SIRT1. Abstract
Soybean is a rich source of high-quality proteins and an excellent food source of bioactive peptides. A tripeptide, Leu−Ser−Trp (LSW), was previously identified from soybean as an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptide. In the present work, we further studied its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in human vascular endothelial cells (EA.hy926) and elucidated the mechanisms underlying these biological activities. In tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα)-stimulated EA.hy926 cells, LSW significantly inhibited oxidative stress, both reduced superoxide and malondialdehyde levels (p < 0.001), owing to its free-radical-scavenging ability. LSW treatment also mitigated the elevated protein expression of vascular adhesion molecule-1 (p < 0.001) and cyclooxygenase 2 (p < 0.01) via inhibition of NF-κB and p38/JNK signaling, respectively. Additionally, LSW also inhibited the endogenous formation of TNFα and attenuated the expression of its two receptors in EA.hy926 cells. Furthermore, LSW upregulated sirtuin-1 level, which partially contributed to its anti-inflammatory activity. These results demonstrate the multiple roles of LSW in ameliorating vascular endothelial oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, which support its uses as a nutraceutical or functional food ingredient for combating endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Simple Summary Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are essential components to the management of most solid malignancies. These modalities exert their effects primarily by mediating the DNA damage of malignant cells; however, healthy cells are also damaged by the same mechanisms and can incur acute and late side effects resulting in both morbidity and mortality. Dietary interventions have been shown to reduce cancer growth, progression, and metastasis in many different solid tumor models and they show promise for improving cancer outcomes in early phase clinical studies. Here, we review preclinical and clinical studies that examine how dietary interventions can impact cancer treatment toxicity and efficacy in patients who were undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. This information can help clinicians tailor the dietary regimens to patients based on their treatment methods and promote larger clinical trials to test the dietary effects on cancer treatment safety and efficacy. Abstract Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are first-line treatments in the management of advanced solid tumors. Whereas these treatments are directed at eliminating cancer cells, they cause significant adverse effects that can be detrimental to a patient’s quality of life and even life-threatening. Diet is a modifiable risk factor that has been shown to affect cancer risk, recurrence, and treatment toxicity, but little information is known how diet interacts with cancer treatment modalities. Although dietary interventions, such as intermittent fasting and ketogenic diets, have shown promise in pre-clinical studies by reducing the toxicity and increasing the efficacy of chemotherapeutics, there remains a limited number of clinical studies in this space. This review surveys the impact of dietary interventions (caloric restriction, intermittent and short-term fasting, and ketogenic diet) on cancer treatment outcomes in both pre-clinical and clinical studies. Early studies support a complementary role for these dietary interventions in improving patient quality of life across multiple cancer types by reducing toxicity and perhaps a benefit in treatment efficacy. Larger, phase III, randomized clinical trials are ultimately necessary to evaluate the efficacy of these dietary interventions in improving oncologic or quality of life outcomes for patients that are undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Abstract
Minerals and vitamins involved in the antioxidant defense system are essential for healthy growth and proper development during infancy. Milk and dairy products are of particular importance for improving the supply of these nutrients to children. Indeed, the present study aimed to evaluate the nutrient intake and food sources of zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), retinol and carotenoids (sources of vitamin A), and vitamins C and E, and to analyze their relationships with personal and familiar factors in Spanish children from the EsNuPI study. One subpopulation representative of the Spanish population from 1 to <10 years old (n = 707) (reference group, REF) who reported consuming all types of milk over the last year, and another subpopulation of the same age who reported consuming fortified milk formulas (FMFs) (including follow-on formula, young child formula, growing up milk, toddler’s milk, and enriched and fortified milk) (n = 741) (fortified milk consumers, FMCs) completed two 24 h dietary recalls used to estimate their nutrient intakes and to compare them to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Dietary Reference Values (DRVs). The REF reported higher median intakes than FMCs for Se (61 µg/kg vs. 51 µg/kg) and carotenoids (1079 µg/day vs. 998 µg/day). Oppositely, FMCs reported higher intakes than REF for Zn (7.9 mg/day vs. 6.9 mg/day), vitamin A (636 µg/day vs. 481 µg/day), vitamin E (8.9 mg/day vs. 4.5 mg/day), vitamin C (113 mg/day vs. 71 mg/day), and retinol (376 µg/day vs. 233 µg/day). In the REF group, more than 50% of the children met the EFSA recommendations for Zn (79.6%), Se (87.1%), vitamin A (71.3%), and vitamin C (96.7%), respectively. On the other hand, 92.2% were below the EFSA recommendations for vitamin E. In the FMC group, more than 50% of the children met the EFSA recommendations for Zn (55.2%), Se (90.8%), vitamin A (75.7%), vitamin E (66.7%), and vitamin C (100%). We found statistically significant differences between subpopulations for all cases except for Se. In both subpopulations, the main sources of all antioxidant nutrients were milk and dairy products. For carotenoids, the main sources were vegetables and fruits followed by milk and dairy products. A high percentage of children had vitamins A and E intakes below the recommendations, information of great importance to stakeholders. More studies using intakes and biomarkers are needed, however, to determine an association with diverse factors of oxidative damage.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a world wild health care issue marked by insulin resistance, a risk factor for the metabolic disorder that exaggerates endothelial dysfunction, increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor PPAR) agonists have therapeutically mitigated hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in T2D patients. Therefore, we aimed to experimentally investigate the efficacy of newly designed synthetic PPARα/Ƴ partial agonists on a High-Fat Diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T2D. Female Wistar rats (200 ± 25 g body weight) were divided into four groups. The experimental groups were fed the HFD for three consecutive weeks before STZ injection (45 mg/kg/i.p) to induce T2D. Standard reference PPARƳ agonist pioglitazone and the partial synthetic PPARƳ (PIO; 20 mg/kg/BW, orally) were administered orally for 2 weeks after 72 h of STZ injection. The aorta tissue was isolated for biological ELISA, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting investigations for vascular inflammatory endothelial mediators endothelin-1 (ET-1), intracellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), E-selectin, and anti-inflammatory vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), as well as microRNA126-5p and p-AKT/p-Pi3k/p-PDK-1/p-mTOR, endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS) immunohistochemical staining all are coupled with and histopathological examination. Our results revealed that HFD/STZ-induced T2D increased fasting blood glucose, ET-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, and VIP levels, while decreasing the expression of both microRNA126-5p and p-AKT/p-Pi3k/p-PDK-1/p-mTOR phosphorylation. In contrast, the partial synthetic PPARƳ derivative evidenced a vascular alteration significantly more than reference PIO via decreasing (ET-1), ICAM-1, E-selectin, and VIP, along with increased expression of microRNA126-5p and p-AKT/p-Pi3k/p-PDK-1/p-mTOR. In conclusion, the partial synthetic PPARƳ derivative significantly affected HFD/STZ-induced T2D with vascular complications in the rat aorta.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis refers to the deposition of lipids and the co-existence of inflammation and impaired inflammation resolution in pan-vasculature, which causes lumen narrowing, hardening, plaque formation, and the manifestation of acute cardiovascular events. Emerging evidence has suggested that vascular circulation can be viewed as a complex homeostatic system analogous to a mini-ecosystem which consists of the vascular microenvironment (niche) and the crosstalk among phenotypically and functionally diverse vascular cell types. Here, we elucidate how cell components in the vascular wall affect vascular homeostasis, structure, function, and atherosclerosis in a holistic perspective. Finally, we discuss the potential role of vascular-stabilizing strategies including pharmacotherapies, natural substances and lifestyle modifications, in preventing cardiovascular diseases by preserving vascular integrity and homeostasis.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation is associated with various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer, which severely affect the health and quality of life of people. Oxidative stress induced by unbalanced production and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the essential risk factors for chronic inflammation. Recent studies, including the studies of mushrooms, which have received considerable attention, report that the antioxidant effects of natural compounds have more advantages than synthetic antioxidants. Mushrooms have been consumed by humans as precious nourishment for 3,000 years, and so far, more than 350 types have been identified in China. Mushrooms are rich in polysaccharides, peptides, polyphenols, alkaloids, and terpenoids and are associated with several healthy biological functions, especially antioxidant properties. As such, the extracts purified from mushrooms could activate the expression of antioxidant enzymes through the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway to neutralize excessive ROS and inhibit ROS-induced chronic inflammation through the NF-κB pathway. Recently, the antioxidant properties of mushrooms have been successfully applied to treating cardiovascular disease (CAD), neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. The present review summarizes the antioxidant properties and the mechanism of compounds purified from mushrooms, emphasizing the oxidative stress regulation of mushrooms to fight against chronic inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The impact of the dietary potential inflammatory effect on diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has not been adequately investigated. The present study aimed to explore the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and DKD in US adults. DESIGN This is a cross-sectional study. SETTING Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2016) were used. DII was calculated from 24-h dietary recall interviews. DKD was defined as diabetes with albuminuria, impaired glomerular filtration rate or both. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were adopted to evaluate the associations. PARTICIPANTS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2016) were used, which can provide the information of participants. RESULTS Four thousand two-hundred and sixty-four participants were included in this study. The adjusted OR of DKD was 1·04 (95 % CI 0·81, 1·36) for quartile 2, 1·24 (95 % CI 0·97, 1·59) for quartile 3 and 1·64 (95 % CI 1·24, 2·17) for quartile 4, respectively, compared with the quartile 1 of DII. A linear dose-response pattern was observed between DII and DKD (Pnonlinearity = 0·73). In the stratified analyses, the OR for quartile 4 of DII were significant among adults with higher educational level (OR 1·83, 95 % CI 1·26, 2·66) and overweight or obese participants (OR 1·67, 95 % CI 1·23, 2·28), but not among the corresponding another subgroup. The interaction effects between DII and stratified factors on DKD were not statistically significant (all P values for interactions were >0·05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that a pro-inflammatory diet, shown by a higher DII score, is associated with increased odd of DKD.

Abstract
Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) is among the leading causes of neonatal brain injury. ODN, a peptide derived from diazepam-binding inhibitor (DBI), has potent antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties. It remains unclear, however, whether ODN is an effective treatment for HIBD. Here, we reported that treatment with ODN (10 ng/day, i.c.v.) alleviated the deficits in myodynamia and motor coordination and cognitive functions in HIBD. Meanwhile, ODN prevented the neuronal loss in the cortex and hippocampus in HIBD rats. In addition, ODN decreased ROS by generating less oxidants and more antioxidants, as reflected by a dramatic increase in total antioxidant capacity, glutathione reductase, and catalase and a marked decrease in H2O2 and total nitric oxide synthase. Collectively, these data show ODN alleviates neuron injury and motor and memory deficits by attenuating ROS production and could be used as a novel molecular for treating HIBD.

Abstract
Several studies have reported that the administration of various nanoparticles in vivo can cause oxidative stress. The combination of ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (USPIONs) and acute stress was selected because, during intravenous application of a contrast agent, patients are exposed to psycho-emotional stress. This study was designed to investigate the effect of acute stress and USPIONs on selected markers of oxidative stress (antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase activities, levels of advanced oxidation protein products, protein carbonyls, lipoperoxides and 8-isoprostanes) in plasma and erythrocytes in normotensive Wistar–Kyoto rats (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In the WKY and SHR groups, there was a significant main effect of genotype between groups on studied markers except protein carbonyls and lipoperoxides. In SHR, the combination of acute stress and USPIONs increased the antioxidant capacity of plasma and the selected enzyme activities of erythrocytes. In WKY, the combination of acute stress and USPIONs decreased the antioxidant capacity of erythrocytes and reduced levels of advanced oxidation protein products in plasma. Our study points to the fact that, when hypertensive subjects are treated with iron oxide nanoparticles, caution should be taken, especially in stress conditions, since they seem to be more vulnerable to oxidative stress produced by USPIONs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Soy whey is a byproduct generated from the processing of several soybean products. Its valorization has continued to attract significant research interest in recent times due to the nutritional and bioactive potency of its chemical composition. Herein, the neuroprotective potency of a soy whey fermented by Cordyceps militaris SN-18 against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative injury in PC12 cells was investigated. METHODS The phenolic compositions were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Antioxidant activities were assessed by ABTS•+ scavenging assay, DPPH radical scavenging assay, reducing power assay, and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. The neuroprotective effects of fermented soy whey (FSW) were investigated based on the oxidative injury model in PC12 cells. RESULTS FSW possessed higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activities compared with unfermented soy whey (UFSW) and that most of the isoflavone glycosides were hydrolyzed into their corresponding aglycones during fermentation. The extract from FSW exhibited a greater protective effect on PC12 cells against oxidative injury by promoting cell proliferation, restoring cell morphology, inhibiting lactic dehydrogenase leakage, reducing reactive oxygen species levels, and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities compared with that from UFSW. Additionally, cell apoptosis was significantly inhibited by FSW through down-regulation of caspase-3, caspase-9, and Bax and up-regulation of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL. S-phase cell arrest was attenuated by FSW through increasing cyclin A, CDK1 and CDK2, and decreasing p21 protein. CONCLUSION Fermentation with C. militaris SN-18 could significantly improve the bioactivity of soy whey by enhancing the ability of nerve cells to resist oxidative damage.

Abstract
Free radicals are formed as a part of normal metabolic activities but are neutralized by the endogenous antioxidants present in cells/tissue, thus maintaining the redox balance. This redox balance is disrupted in certain neuropathophysiological conditions, causing oxidative stress, which is implicated in several progressive neurodegenerative diseases. Following neuronal injury, secondary injury progression is also caused by excessive production of free radicals. Highly reactive free radicals, mainly the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), damage the cell membrane, proteins, and DNA, which triggers a self-propagating inflammatory cascade of degenerative events. Dysfunctional mitochondria under oxidative stress conditions are considered a key mediator in progressive neurodegeneration. Exogenous delivery of antioxidants holds promise to alleviate oxidative stress to regain the redox balance. In this regard, natural and synthetic antioxidants have been evaluated. Despite promising results in preclinical studies, clinical translation of antioxidants as a therapy to treat neurodegenerative diseases remains elusive. The issues could be their low bioavailability, instability, limited transport to the target tissue, and/or poor antioxidant capacity, requiring repeated and high dosing, which cannot be administered to humans because of dose-limiting toxicity. Our laboratory is investigating nanoparticle-mediated delivery of antioxidant enzymes to address some of the above issues. Apart from being endogenous, the main advantage of antioxidant enzymes is their catalytic mechanism of action; hence, they are significantly more effective at lower doses in detoxifying the deleterious effects of free radicals than nonenzymatic antioxidants. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential of antioxidant therapy, challenges in their clinical translation, and the role nanoparticles/drug delivery systems could play in addressing these challenges.

Abstract
Ferroptosis and parthanatos are two types of programmed cell death associated with cerebral ischemia. There is a sizeable interest in seeking chemical components for the regulation of ferroptosis and parthanatos. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) and anhydrosafflor yellow B (AHSYB) mitigated cell death caused by oxidative stress due to antioxidant capacity, yet the mechanism is still uncertain. Thus, we investigated whether HSYA and AHSYB prevent death through these two pathways with the aim to elucidate their potential protective mechanisms of cerebral ischemia. In this study, oxidative stress model was established by treating PC12 cells with oxygen glucose deprivation and reperfusion (OGD/R). Cellular functions and signaling pathways were analyzed in PC12 cells using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), flow cytometry, ELISA, iron assay kit, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), immunofluorescence, and western blot analysis. And the research proved HSYA and AHSYB protected cells from oxidative stress. The phenomenon is associated with ferroptosis and parthanatos. HSYA and AHSYB upregulated cystine/glutamate antiporter system xc- (system xc-) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), returned the levels of GSH/GSSG ratio, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and iron ion, as well as alleviated lipid peroxidation. By reason of reducing ROS, HSYA and AHSYB restrained poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) overactivation, reduced the production of excess poly(ADP-ribose) (PAR) polymer and apoptosis inducing factor (AIF) nuclear translocation. The results suggested that HSYA and AHSYB limited ferroptosis and parthanatos to alleviate oxidative stress in PC12 cells. These findings may have implications for improving understanding of how drugs reduce oxidative stress and develop new strategies for treating degenerative diseases such as cerebral ischemia.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have found that aerobic exercise was more effective in improving vascular endothelial function than resistance training, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and other types of exercise, while the effects between different intensities and durations of aerobic exercise were unclear. Therefore, we performed this meta-analysis to investigate the effects of different intensities and durations of aerobic exercise on the vascular endothelial function of middle-aged and elderly people. Methods: Databases were searched up to April 2021 for studies evaluating the influences of different intensities and durations of aerobic exercise on endothelial function assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) among healthy middle-aged and elderly people. Data were pooled using random-effects models to obtain the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results A total of 9 studies involving 221 participants fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Aerobic exercise improved the overall FMD of healthy middle-aged and elderly people [WMD, 1.33 (95% CI, 0.37–2.28), P < 0.05]. Specifically, vigorous-intensity exercise increased FMD significantly in healthy middle-aged and elderly people [WMD, 1.10 (95% CI, 0.27–1.93), P < 0.05], while moderate-intensity exercise had no significant association with FMD [WMD, 1.49 (95% CI, −0.62 to 3.60), P = 0.17]. In addition, long-term (8 weeks or above) aerobic exercise increased the FMD in healthy middle-aged and elderly people [WMD, 1.63 (95% CI, 0.61–2.66), P < 0.05], while one-time acute aerobic exercise had no significant association with FMD of healthy middle-aged and elderly people [WMD, 0.89 (95% CI, −1.47 to 3.24), P = 0.46]. Specifically, 8 weeks or above of vigorous-intensity exercise increased FMD significantly in healthy middle-aged and elderly people [WMD, 1.48 (95% CI, 1.06–1.90), P < 0.01], while 8 weeks or above of moderate aerobic exercise had no significant association with FMD [WMD, 1.49 (95% CI, −0.62 to 3.60), P = 0.17]. Conclusion Aerobic exercise, especially 8 weeks or above of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise, improved the endothelial function in healthy middle-aged and elderly people.

Abstract
Although genetic variations rs780094 and rs1260326 of the glucokinase
regulatory protein gene (GCKR) could be associated with lipid profile
imbalance, their influence on acute ischemic stroke (AIS) risk has not yet
been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of
GCKR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs780094 and rs1260326 on lipid
profile parameters in patients with AIS, and to evaluate the association of
these SNPs with the risk of AIS. In a casecontrol study, a total of 148
subjects were screened for GCKR rs780094 and rs1260326 SNPs using the
polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism
(PCR-RFLP) method. The lipid profile was determined based on serum total
cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density
lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triacylglycerol (TG) concentrations. The
frequencies of the minor rs780094T allele and the minor rs1260326T allele
were significantly lower in AIS patients compared to controls. The
rs780094TT genotype and the rs1260326TT genotype were associated with
decreased risk of AIS compared to wildtype carriers. In conclusion, this is
the first study implying that decreased risk of AIS in rs780094 and
rs1260326 homozygous minor allele carriers is not caused by dyslipidemia,
but possibly by the lack of coagulation factor glycosylation.

Abstract
AIM This study investigated the roles of bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP4) and ROS in diabetic endothelial dysfunction and explored whether Salvianolic acid B (Sal B) improved endothelial function by affecting BMP4-ROS in diabetic mice. MAIN METHODS db/db mice were orally administrated with Sal B (10 mg/kg/day) for one week while db/m + mice were injected with adenoviral vectors delivering BMP4 (3 × 108 pfu) and then received one week-Sal B treatment. ROS levels were assayed by DHE staining. Protein expression and phosphorylation were evaluated by Western blot. Aortic rings were suspended in myograph for force measurement. Flow-mediated dilatations in the second-order mesenteric arteries were determined by pressure myograph. KEY FINDINGS We first revealed the existence of a BMP4-ROS cycle in db/db mice, which stimulated p38 MAPK/JNK/caspase 3 and thus participated in endothelial dysfunction. One week-treatment or 24 h-incubation with Sal B disrupted the cycle, suppressed p38 MAPK/JNK/caspase 3 cascade, and improved endothelium-dependent relaxations (EDRs) in db/db mouse aortas. Importantly, in vivo Sal B treatment also improved flow-mediated dilatation in db/db mouse second order mesenteric arteries. Furthermore, in vivo BMP4 overexpression induced oxidative stress, stimulated p38 MAPK/JNK/caspase 3, and impaired EDRs in db/m + mouse aortas, which were all reversed by Sal B. SIGNIFICANCE The present study demonstrates that Sal B ameliorates endothelial dysfunction through breaking the BMP4-ROS cycle and subsequently inhibiting p38 MAPK/JNK/caspase 3 in diabetic mice and provides evidence for the additional new mechanism underlying the benefit of Sal B against diabetic vasculopathy.
