Abstract
Aim We aim to describe disparities in dual and polytobacco use at the intersection of age, sex, race and ethnicity, and income. Methods We used the 2018-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey to estimate the prevalence of combinations of dual (two products) and polytobacco (three or more products) use for cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco (n = 135,268). We created five mutually exclusive categories: 1) cigarettes and e-cigarettes, 2) cigarettes and cigars, 3) cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, 4) dual/polyuse without cigarettes, and 5) polyuse with cigarettes. We estimated the dual/polyuse prevalence at the intersection of age (18-34, 35-54, 55+ years), sex (male, female), race and ethnicity (Non-Hispanic White, Non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and Non-Hispanic Other), and annual household income (<$50,000, $50,000-$99,999, ≥$100,000), resulting in 72 sociodemographic categories. We used a visualization tool that allowed for detailed characterization and identification of dual and polytobacco use disparities. Results Females were in three of the top four groups with the highest cigarette and e-cigarette dual use. Cigarette and cigar dual use was disproportionately high among low-income Non-Hispanic Black male adults aged 35-54 and 18-34. The highest prevalence of both polyuse with cigarettes and dual/polyuse without cigarettes was among low-income, Non-Hispanic White male adults aged 18-34 years. Conclusion We identified the population groups disproportionately using two or more tobacco products. This information is helpful for surveillance and for the implementation of tobacco control policies aimed at decreasing disparities in tobacco use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: E-cigarettes are promoted as less harmful than cigarettes. There has not been a direct comparison of health effects of e-cigarettes or dual use (concurrently using e-cigarettes and cigarettes) with those of cigarettes in the general population. METHODS: Studies in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PsychINFO published through October 1, 2023, were pooled in a random-effects meta-analysis if five or more studies were identified with a disease outcome. We assessed risk of bias with Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Exposure and certainty with Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations. Outcomes with fewer studies were summarized but not pooled. RESULTS: We identified 124 odds ratios (94 cross-sectional and 30 longitudinal) from 107 studies. Pooled odds ratios for current e-cigarette versus cigarette use were not different for cardiovascular disease (odds ratio, 0.81; 95% confidence interval, 0.58 to 1.14), stroke (0.73; 0.47 to 1.13), or metabolic dysfunction (0.99; 0.91 to 1.09) but were lower for asthma (0.84; 0.74 to 0.95), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (0.53; 0.38 to 0.74), and oral disease (0.87; 0.76 to 1.00). Pooled odds ratios for dual use versus cigarettes were increased for all outcomes (range, 1.20 to 1.41). Pooled odds ratios for e-cigarettes and dual use compared with nonuse of either product were increased (e-cigarette range, 1.24 to 1.47; dual use, 1.49 to 3.29). All included studies were assessed as having a low risk of bias. Results were generally not sensitive to study characteristics. Limited studies of other outcomes suggest that e-cigarette use is associated with additional diseases. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to reassess the assumption that e-cigarette use provides substantial harm reduction across all cigarette-caused diseases, particularly accounting for dual use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Racial/ethnic discrimination (hereafter, discrimination) is associated with tobacco use. However, little is known about the relationship between discrimination and dual/polytobacco use and tobacco use disorder (TUD), including how these relationships vary by race/ethnicity. METHODS Data on adults 18 and older come from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (n = 35,881). Past-year discrimination was measured using the Experiences of Discrimination scale. Past 30-day exclusive, dual, and polytobacco use was measured as the mutually exclusive use of any combination of four types of tobacco products: cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems, other combustibles (i.e., cigars and pipe), and smokeless tobacco. Past-year TUD was defined according to DSM-5 criteria. Associations between discrimination and exclusive, dual, and polytobacco use and discrimination and TUD were estimated using multinomial logistic regression and logistic regression, respectively. Models were stratified by race/ethnicity (i.e., Hispanic, non-Hispanic (NH) White, NH Black, another race/ethnicity) to assess effect modification. RESULTS Adults who used tobacco and who had TUD was 24.2% and 19.2%, respectively. More discrimination was associated with higher odds of exclusive, dual, and polytobacco use as well as TUD. Models stratified by race/ethnicity suggest that discrimination was associated with dual/polytobacco use among NH Black adults (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.002-1.11) and NH White adults (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.13-1.22). While more discrimination was associated with TUD among all racial/ethnic groups, the relationship was the strongest for NH White adults. CONCLUSIONS Discrimination was associated with more severe tobacco use outcomes among multiple racial/ethnic groups, but associations were the strongest for NH White adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine trends in single, dual, and polytobacco use between 2014-2020 for US youth and to identify disparities in these trends by grade level, sex, and race/ethnicity. DESIGN A secondary analysis of the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS). SUBJECTS A total of 122 566 students. MEASURES Past 30-day exclusive use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, other combustibles (cigars, little cigars, cigarillos, hookah, pipe tobacco, bidis) and smokeless tobacco (snus, smokeless, dissolvable); dual use of each product with e-cigarettes; polyuse with e-cigarettes; dual/polyuse without e-cigarettes. ANALYSIS Multivariable modified Poisson regression. RESULTS Compared to 2014, exclusive e-cigarette use (APR = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.96, 3.21) trended upward while exclusive cigarette (APR = .34, 95% CI: .23, .50), 'other' combustibles (APR = .47, 95% CI: .37, .58), and smokeless tobacco (APR = .40, 95% CI: .25, .65) use trended downward in 2020. Polytobacco use with and without e-cigarettes trended downward in 2020 compared to 2014. We also saw differences in trends across sociodemographic groups. Comparing 2020 to 2014, exclusive e-cigarette use was higher for females than males, 'other' combustible tobacco use remained stable for Non-Hispanic Black students but decreased for other racial/ethnic groups, and dual e-cigarette/cigarette use trended upward more for middle school students than high school students. CONCLUSIONS Despite decreased trends in tobacco product use without e-cigarettes between 2014-2020, differences in tobacco product use trends by grade level, sex, and race/ethnicity were identified. Prevention efforts targeting disparities in tobacco product use are needed.

Abstract
Background: Research characterizing patterns of tobacco and cannabis use by product type and route of administration among youth and young adults (YAs) is limited. Methods: We conducted latent class analysis of tobacco and cannabis use (i.e., cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), cigars, blunts, cannabis vaping, and other cannabis use (without blunting/vaping)) among youth (ages 15-17) and YAs (ages 18-24) who used at least one product in the past 30 days, using data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (Wave 4, 2016-2017). We used multinomial logistic regression models to examine associations between sociodemographic characteristics and use classes. Results: The latent use classes for youth included cigarettes (2.5%), ENDS (2.6%), blunts (2.5%), other cannabis (6.3%), ENDS + cannabis vaping (2.7%), and cigarettes + cigars + other cannabis (1.5%), while the latent use classes for YAs included cigarettes (11.7%), ENDS (3.9%), blunts (5.3%), other cannabis (7.0%), cigarettes + cigars (8.2%), and cigarettes + ENDS + cannabis vaping (4.9%). We compared use classes to never/former use for youth (82.0%) and YAs (59.0%) and found that they differed by each sociodemographic characteristic. For example, non-Hispanic Black YAs had higher odds of cigarettes + cigar use compared to non-Hispanic White YAs, whereas racial/ethnic minority youth and YAs had lower odds of other dual/poly use groups compared to their non-Hispanic White counterparts. Conclusions: We observed differences in use classes by sociodemographic characteristics for youth and YAs. Health professionals must consider tobacco and cannabis use patterns when implementing prevention and cessation interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Current use of tobacco and marijuana products is largely defined as use within the past 30-days or more recently. These products are not used in the same manner, frequency, or context especially among young adults who are increasingly at risk for poly-product use. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of most recent product use across select tobacco and marijuana products. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data used in this study come from a cross-sectional survey conducted among a nationally representative sample of young adults ages 18-34 (n = 1,189) in the U.S. from October-November 2020. Respondents were asked about past product and most recent use of select tobacco/nicotine products (cigarettes, little filtered cigars and cigarillos, large cigars, e-cigarettes, hookah/water pipes) and marijuana products (blunts, e-cigarettes with marijuana, and other products with marijuana). RESULTS A high proportion of young adults reported having used at least one tobacco (79.6%) or marijuana (68.6%) products. There is variability in the distribution of most recent use across different tobacco and marijuana users even within the past 3 to past 6 months where nearly one in five users of any product report last use. The average number of tobacco/nicotine products used as well as concurrent marijuana use were lowest when looking at those whose most recent use was within the past 30-days. As the measures of most recent use became more broad, the number of tobacco/nicotine products used increased as did the prevalence of concurrent marijuana use which extended through the past 6-months. CONCLUSION Measures of current use may need to be expanded beyond the past 30-days to include through the past 6-months to better encapsulate usage patterns when considering poly-tobacco and marijuana co-use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Racial/ethnic discrimination (hereafter, discrimination) is associated with use of individual tobacco and cannabis products. However, we know little about how discrimination affects dual/polytobacco and cannabis use and associated use disorders. METHODS We used cross-sectional data on adults (18+) from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (n = 35,744). We defined past-year discrimination as a summary scale (range: 0-24) based on six scenarios. We created a mutually exclusive six-category use variable: noncurrent, individual tobacco and noncannabis, individual tobacco and cannabis, individual cannabis and nontobacco, dual/polytobacco and noncannabis, and dual/polytobacco and cannabis based on past 30-day tobacco use of four products (i.e., cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems, other combustibles (cigars, pipe), smokeless tobacco) and cannabis use. We also examined past-year tobacco use disorder (TUD) and cannabis use disorder (CUD) as a four-level variable: no disorders, TUD only, CUD only, and TUD and CUD. We estimated associations between discrimination and each outcome using adjusted multinomial logistic regression and assessed effect modification by stratifying adjusted models by race/ethnicity (i.e., Hispanic, non-Hispanic (NH) White, NH Black, and another race/ethnicity). RESULTS Experiencing more discrimination was associated with each outcome but was most strongly associated with dual/polytobacco and cannabis use (OR: 1.13, 95 % CI: 1.07-1.19) and joint TUD and CUD (OR: 1.16, 95 % CI: 1.12-1.20). Models stratified by race/ethnicity showed that discrimination was associated with dual/polytobacco and cannabis only among NH White adults, and with joint TUD and CUD only among NH Black and NH White adults. CONCLUSIONS Discrimination was associated with tobacco and cannabis use outcomes among multiple adult racial/ethnic populations, but associations were more profound for NH White and NH Black adults than adults from other racial/ethnic populations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION U.S. smoking prevalence varies greatly by race/ethnicity. However, little is known about how smoking initiation, cessation, and intensity vary by birth cohort and race/ethnicity. METHODS Adult smoking data were obtained from the 1978-2018 National Health Interview Surveys. Age‒period‒cohort models with constrained natural splines were developed to estimate historical smoking patterns among non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, non-Hispanic Asian and Pacific Islander, and non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaskan Native individuals. Annual smoking prevalence and probabilities of smoking initiation, cessation, and intensity by age, year, gender, and race/ethnicity were estimated for the 1900 to 2000 birth cohorts. Analysis was conducted in 2020-2021. RESULTS Smoking initiation probabilities were highest for the American Indian and Alaskan Native population, second highest among the non-Hispanic White population, and lowest among Asian and Pacific Islander and Hispanic populations across birth cohorts. Historically, initiation probabilities among non-Hispanic Black populations were comparable with those among non-Hispanic White populations but have decreased since the 1970 birth cohort. Cessation probabilities were lowest among American Indian and Alaskan Native and non-Hispanic Black populations and highest among non-Hispanic White and Asian and Pacific Islander populations across cohorts and ages. Initiation and cessation probabilities produce observed patterns of smoking where prevalence among American Indian and Alaskan Native populations is highest across all ages and cohorts. Across cohorts, smoking prevalence among non-Hispanic Black populations, particularly males, is lower than among non-Hispanic White populations at younger ages but higher at older ages. CONCLUSIONS There are important and persistent racial/ethnic differences in smoking prevalence, initiation, cessation, and intensity across U.S. birth cohorts. Targeted interventions should address widening smoking disparities by race/ethnicity, particularly for American Indian and Alaskan Native and non-Hispanic Black populations.

Abstract
Abuse liability (AL) of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is relevant as the category increases in popularity as a potentially less-harmful alternative to cigarette smoking. AL assessments are important to the FDA in determining if a new product is appropriate for the protection of public health. This paper reports the results for Vuse Solo (G2 cartridge design) compared to high and low AL-comparators evaluated in an open-label, randomized crossover confinement AL study. The confinement design was adapted from previous ambulatory studies of Vuse Solo (G1 cartridge design) and included product familiarization sessions before each four-hour test session in which subjective measures, nicotine pharmacokinetics (PK), and physiological endpoints were assessed following a single 10-min ad libitum product use session. Product liking, intent to use again, suppression of urge to smoke, and nicotine PK were lower after use of Vuse Solo compared to cigarettes and higher after use of Vuse Solo compared to nicotine gum. No significant differences in blood pressure or heart rate were observed between the products pre- to post-product use. These data reinforce previous research and provide the scientific evidence to support regulatory decisions demonstrating that Vuse Solo has an AL profile lower than that of combustible cigarettes but higher than that of nicotine gum and, therefore, may be a suitable replacement for cigarette smoking for some adult smokers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Little filtered cigars and cigarillos (LCCs) are consumed infrequently, co-administered with marijuana, and concurrently used with other tobacco products. Reliance on the past 30-day use estimate, a marker of tobacco user status, may underestimate the dynamic nature of intermittent LCC and other tobacco product use. We developed a framework to capture the intermittent nature of exclusive LCC use and dual/poly use with cigarettes and large cigars using broader timing of last product use categories and product use modality (e.g., with marijuana). METHODS Data come from the baseline C'RILLOS study, a U.S. nationally representative sample of young adults aged 18-34 (n = 1063) collected in October 2019. We developed a consumption taxonomy framework that accounted for respondents' modality of LCC use (i.e., use with tobacco, LCC-T, or use with marijuana as blunts, LCC-B), the exclusive use of LCCs and other tobacco products (i.e., cigarettes, and large cigars) or their co-use and the timing of last product use (i.e., ever and past 30 days, past 3 months, past 6 months, greater than 6 months). RESULTS Seventy-five percent of our sample reported ever use of any combustible tobacco product, including LCCs. The most common ever use pattern was poly use of LCC-T + LCC-B + cigarettes (16%). Our consumption taxonomy framework demonstrated the fluid nature of combustible tobacco product use among LCC users. For instance, among past 30-day cigarette users, 48% reported using LCC-T, 39% reported using LCC-B, and 32% reported using large cigars in the past 3 months or more. DISCUSSION The tobacco use field currently classifies 'tobacco users' based on the product they smoked in the past 30 days. Any tobacco product use beyond the past 30-day period is considered 'discontinued use' and not the focus of intervention or tobacco regulatory science decisions. We documented the substantial proportion of young adult LCC, cigarette, and large cigar users who either exclusively or dual/poly used these combustible products in recent (e.g., past 3 months) periods. To prevent underestimation of use, surveillance measures should assess the use modality, timing of last product use, and exclusive/multiple product use to more accurately identify the smoking status of young adult LCC users.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is mixed evidence regarding whether older (vs. younger) smokers are more or less likely to quit smoking. We examined how age is associated with cigarette and all tobacco product abstinence and the potential moderating effects of smoking frequency. AIMS AND METHODS Data from a 4-year cohort of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study were used, including 7512 smokers at Wave 1 who had smoking status data at Wave 4. Logistic regression models were used to examine the effects of age (18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, and ≥55 years) on Wave 4, 30-day and 12-month cigarette and all tobacco product abstinence, adjusting for covariates and the interaction between age and cigarette use frequency (nondaily, light daily, and heavy daily). RESULTS Older smokers (≥55 years) were more likely to be heavy daily smokers than younger smokers 18-24 and 25-34 years, but were less likely to have a past-year cigarette quit attempt. Younger smokers 45-54 years were less likely to report 12-month cigarette abstinence than older smokers (odds ratio = 0.72 [0.54-0.95]). Younger smokers 18-24 and 45-54 years were less likely to report 12-month tobacco product abstinence than older smokers (odds ratio = 0.65 [0.45-0.93]; odds ratio = 0.73 [0.55-0.96], respectively). Thirty-day cigarette abstinence significantly decreased as age increased for nondaily smokers, significantly increased for heavier daily smokers, but remained similar across age for light daily smokers. CONCLUSIONS Older smokers were more likely to report 12-month cigarette and tobacco abstinence than younger smokers 45-54 years old, and the effect of age on abstinence differed by smoking frequency/intensity. Smoking cessation interventions need to be age specific and consider smoking frequency. IMPLICATIONS This study shows that although older smokers are more likely to be heavy smokers and less likely to have a quit attempt at baseline, they are more likely to have 12-month cigarette and tobacco abstinence than younger smokers. Furthermore, 30-day cigarette abstinence significantly decreases as age increases for nondaily smokers and significantly increases for heavy daily smokers, suggesting that the effect of cigarette smoking frequency and intensity changes with age. Smoking cessation interventions need to be age specific as well as consider the smoking frequency/intensity of each age group. Younger smokers may need more targeted cessation interventions to successfully quit.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Consumers have shifted to online purchases for many products, including tobacco and e-cigarettes. These shifts have occurred alongside internet tobacco purchasing restrictions being proposed and enacted across the US. The aim of this study was to identify motivations for and against purchasing tobacco and e-cigarettes online, to better understand potential impacts or loopholes. METHODS We surveyed 463 US adults who reported ever purchasing tobacco or e-cigarettes in April 2021, using Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Participants who reported purchasing tobacco or e-cigarettes online were asked to describe their reasons for doing so. Those who reported never purchasing online were asked to describe their reasons. Responses were triple-coded and thematically analyzed. RESULTS Most respondents (n=330; 71.3%) had purchased tobacco or e-cigarettes online. We identified 14 reasons for purchasing tobacco or e-cigarettes online across four themes: price (cheaper online, discounts, bulk purchases, avoiding taxes), product characteristics (availability, quality), buying experience (convenience, time, COVID-19 concerns, avoiding shame, discretion, avoiding salespersons, reading reviews), and curiosity. We identified 13 reasons for not purchasing tobacco or e-cigarette products online across seven themes: buying experience (convenience, time, discretion, seeing the product), concerns (legality, safety, quality), consumption, price, supporting local, unaware, and uninterested. CONCLUSIONS Both online and offline purchasers stated price and convenience motivated their choice to purchase tobacco or e-cigarettes online. Though few participants mentioned purchasing illicit products, concerns about legality and quality of online purchases were raised, and there was some awareness that online purchases attracted lower taxation.

Abstract
Research on whether sexual orientation discrimination is associated with multiple tobacco product use among sexual minority (SM) adults is limited. Thus, we explored the associations between sexual orientation discrimination and exclusive, dual, and polyuse among a subset of SM adults (18+) (n = 3453) using the 2012–2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III. We evaluated six indicators of prior-to-past-year sexual orientation discrimination separately and as a summary scale and defined past-year exclusive, dual, and polyuse based on cigarette, electronic nicotine delivery systems, other combustible (cigars and traditional pipe), and smokeless tobacco products. Using multinomial logistic regression, we estimated adjusted associations between sexual orientation discrimination and exclusive, dual, and polyuse. Experiencing discrimination in public places, being called names, and being bullied, assaulted, or threatened were associated with dual use, while experiencing discrimination when obtaining health care or insurance and when receiving health care were associated with polyuse. Each one-unit increase in the sexual orientation discrimination summary scale was associated with 5% and 10% higher odds of dual (95% CI: 1.01–1.10) and polyuse (95% CI: 1.02–1.18), respectively. To conclude, we advise health professionals to consider the salience of discrimination against SM adults and how these experiences lead to dual/polyuse.

Abstract
Adults experiencing homelessness smoke conventional cigarettes and engage in concurrent tobacco product use at very high rates; however, little is known about how use patterns, perceived disease risk, barriers to quitting smoking, and smoking cessation intervention preferences differ by sex in this group. Participants comprised a convenience sample of 626 adult conventional cigarette smokers experiencing homelessness. Participants self-reported their sex, smoking history, mental health and substance use diagnosis history, other concurrent tobacco product use (CU), disease risk perceptions, perceived barriers to quitting smoking, and preferences regarding tobacco cessation interventions via a computer-administered survey. CU rates were 58.1% amongst men and 45.3% amongst women smokers. In both sexes, CUs started smoking earlier (p-values < 0.001) and were more likely to have been diagnosed with a non-nicotine substance use disorder (p-values < 0.014) relative to cigarette-only users. Among men only, CUs were younger, smoked more cigarettes per day and were more likely to identify as non-Hispanic White (p-values < 0.003) than cigarette-only users. Additionally, male CUs reported a greater risk of developing ≥1 smoking-related disease if they did not quit for good; were more likely to endorse craving cigarettes, being around other smokers, habit, stress/mood swings, and coping with life stress as barriers for quitting smoking; and were less likely to prefer medications to quit smoking relative to male cigarette-only users (p-values < 0.04). On the other hand, female CUs reported a greater risk of developing ≥1 smoking-related disease even if they quit for good; were more likely to endorse stress/mood swings and coping with life stress as barriers for quitting smoking relative to female cigarette-only users (p-values < 0.05); and did not differentially prefer one cessation medication over another. Overall, findings confirm high rates of CU among both sexes, characterize those who may be more likely to be CUs, and reveal opportunities to educate men and women experiencing homeless on the benefits of evidence-based interventions for smoking cessation.

Abstract
This study examines patterns of use for menthol/non-menthol cigarettes and Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) from 2013 to 2019 among U.S. adults. We calculated the weighted population prevalence of current exclusive and dual use for each product (i.e., menthol/non-menthol cigarettes and ENDS) stratified by age, sex, race/ethnicity, household income, and education in all surveys using data from three nationally representative surveys: the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Waves 1–4 (W1-W4), 2013–2018; the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2015; and the Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) 2014–2015 (T1) and 2018–2019 (T2). Exclusive non-menthol cigarette use (PATH: 9.0%W1, 9.4%W4; NHIS: 8.7%; TUS-CPS: 8.1%T1, 6.9%T2) and dual non-menthol cigarette/ENDS use (PATH: 2.4%W1, 1.5%W4; NHIS: 1.5%; TUS-CPS: 1.1%T1, 0.6%T2) were the most common single and dual tobacco use patterns, respectively, across all surveys. Both exclusive menthol cigarette use (3.9%T1-3.3%T2) and non-menthol cigarette use (8.1%T1-6.9%T2) declined in TUS-CPS from 2014/5–2018/9. Dual menthol cigarette/ENDS use also declined (PATH: 1.5%W1-1.1%W4; TUS-CPS: 0.5%T1-0.3%T2), as did dual non-menthol cigarette/ENDS use (PATH: 2.4%W1-1.5%W4; TUS-CPS 1.1%T1-0.6%T2). Across surveys, exclusive menthol cigarette use and dual menthol cigarette/ENDS use were more common among individuals aged 25–34 years old; non-Hispanic Blacks (NHBs); and low-income earners. Single and dual use patterns of menthol/non-menthol cigarettes and ENDS have declined over time. Nevertheless, certain vulnerable population groups, including NHBs and low-income earners, disproportionately use exclusive menthol cigarettes and dual menthol cigarette/ENDS, making menthol bans a potential policy target for reducing tobacco-related health disparities.

Abstract

We used data from the 2014/2015 and 2018/2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) and the 2015–2019 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) to estimate trends in the following use patterns: exclusive use of cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), other combustibles (cigars/cigarillos/little filtered cigars and traditional pipes/hookah), and smokeless tobacco (four categories); dual use (two product groups) of each product group with cigarettes (three categories); polyuse with cigarettes (all four product groups; one category); and dual/polyuse without cigarettes (one category). We estimated trends in product use patterns overall and by age, sex, and race/ethnicity using two-sample tests for differences in linear proportions. From 2014/2015 to 2018/2019, exclusive ENDS use increased, whereas cigarettes and ENDS dual use decreased. Furthermore, polyuse with cigarettes decreased, whereas dual/polyuse without cigarettes increased, with trends varying by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Our findings suggest that patterns of dual/polyuse with and without cigarettes have changed in recent years, indicating the need for further surveillance of concurrent tobacco product use patterns.

Abstract
A persistent challenge is characterizing patterns of tobacco use in terms of product combinations and frequency. Using Wave 4 (2016-17) Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study adult data, we conducted latent class analyses (LCA) of past 30-day frequency of use for 9 tobacco products. One-step LCA with joint multinomial logistic regression models compared sociodemographic factors between users (n = 13,716) and non-users (n = 17,457), and between latent classes of users. We accounted for survey design and weights. Our analyses identified 6 classes: in addition to non-users (C0: 75.7%), we found 5 distinct latent classes of users: daily exclusive cigarette users (C1: 15.5%); occasional cigarette and polytobacco users (C2: 3.8%); frequent e-product and occasional cigarette users (C3: 2.2%); daily smokeless tobacco (SLT) and infrequent cigarette users (C4: 2.0%); and occasional cigar users (C5: 0.8%). Compared to C1: C2 and C3 had higher odds of being male (versus female), younger (especially 18-24 versus 55 years), and having higher education; C2 had higher, while C3 and C4 had lower, odds of being a racial/ethnic minority (versus Non-Hispanic White); C4 and C5 had much higher odds of being male (versus female) and heterosexual (versus sexual minority) and having higher income; and C5 had higher odds of college or more education. We identified three classes of daily or frequent users of a primary product (cigarettes, SLT or e-products) and two classes of occasional users (cigarettes, cigars and polytobacco). Sociodemographic differences in class membership may influence tobacco-related health disparities associated with specific patterns of use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known regarding long-term impacts of anti-tobacco media campaigns on youth smoking and related disparities in the United States. METHODS We examined longitudinal cohort data from Monitoring the Future (MTF) between 2000 and 2017 in modified Poisson regression models to understand the long-term impacts of televised Truth and state-sponsored ad campaign exposure at baseline (age 18) on first cigarette and daily smoking initiation 1 to 2 years later (at modal ages 19/20). We also used additive interactions to test for potential effect modification between campaign exposure and smoking outcomes by sex, race/ethnicity, and parental educational attainment. RESULTS We found no evidence for baseline media campaign exposure to be associated with first cigarette or daily smoking initiation at modal age 19/20. Further, results showed no evidence for effect modification between campaign exposure and first cigarette or daily smoking initiation. CONCLUSIONS We found no evidence that baseline Truth and state-sponsored ad exposure was associated with first cigarette or daily smoking initiation at follow up, nor did we find any evidence for effect modification by sex, race/ethnicity, or parental education. We hypothesize that anti-tobacco media campaigns might have had a short-term impact on smoking behaviors, though these effects were not sustained long term.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the increasing changes in tobacco use patterns, "current use" definition and the survey used may have important implications for monitoring population use trends. METHODS Using three US surveys (2014/15 TUS-CPS, NHIS and PATH), we compared the adult (age 18+) prevalence of four product groups (cigarettes, other combustibles, smokeless tobacco, and e-cigarettes) based on three past 30-day frequency of use thresholds: 1+, 10+, and 25+ days. We also examined mutually exclusive single, dual, and polytobacco users as a percentage of total users for each product group. RESULTS Regardless of threshold or product, the prevalence was higher in PATH followed by NHIS and TUS-CPS, in some cases by large percentages. The differences in cigarette and smokeless tobacco use prevalence in going from the 1+ to 10+ days and to the 25+ days threshold were minimal. Applying different frequency thresholds had the largest impact on other combustibles prevalence, with a 60% reduction with the 10+ days threshold and a 80% reduction with the 25+ days threshold, compared to the 1+ days threshold, followed by e-cigarettes with 40 and 60% reductions, respectively. The proportion of dual and polytobacco users decreased considerably when using the 10+ vs. the 1+ days threshold and polytobacco use was almost non-existent with the 25+ days threshold. CONCLUSION The estimated prevalence of each tobacco product use depends largely on the survey and frequency of use threshold adopted. The choice of survey and frequency threshold merits serious consideration when monitoring patterns of tobacco use.

Associations between Black and Mild Cigar Pack Size and Demographics and Tobacco Use Behaviors among US Adults. Abstract
Pack size is an important pricing strategy for the tobacco industry, but there is limited data on how users differ based on preferred pack size for cigar products. Using data from Wave 4 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, this study identified differences in adult cigar user characteristics based on pack size purchasing behavior among users of a top cigar brand, Black and Mild. Weighted chi-square tests were used to examine the associations between Black and Mild pack size and sociodemographic, cigar and other substance use characteristics. Overall, our study found that users of Black and Mild cigars differ by demographic, cigar and other tobacco use characteristics based on preferred pack size, with smaller packs appealing to younger, female, less-experienced and less-established smokers, and larger packs appealing to older, male, more experienced, and more dependent cigar smokers. Dual use of cigarettes and cigars was also higher among users of smaller packs. While this study is cross-sectional, findings suggest that minimum packaging laws for cigars may impact younger adults who are purchasing smaller pack sizes and likely experimenting with new cigar products and styles.
