Abstract
This systematic review aimed to explore the impact of different types of footwear and footwear characteristics on the running economy (RE) of long-distance runners and providing guidance for running enthusiasts and clinical practice. A comprehensive search of Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDiscous, SCOPUS, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases from inception to April 2024 was performed. Trials evaluating the RE of adults participating in long-distance running included comparing different footwear characteristics. This review followed the PRISMA statement. Two reviewers screened titles and abstracts to make a relevant shortlist, then retrieved and evaluated full texts against inclusion criteria for eligibility. Two independent reviewers evaluated the methodological quality of each included analysis by employing the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale (PEDro scale). The standardized mean difference (SMD) for the results of RE studies in each study was calculated. Of the 1338 records retrieved, 26 studies were identified in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Limited evidence indicated that compared with shod running, barefoot running (SMD = - 0.50 [95% CI - 0.86, - 0.14], P = 0.006) and minimalist running (SMD = - 0.62 [95% CI - 0.83, - 0.42], P < 0.00001) had a positive impact on RE. Compared with barefoot running, minimalist running did not show a beneficial effect (SMD = 0.37 [95% CI - 0.07, 0.81], P = 0.10) on RE. Additionally, compared with the control condition, RE showed some improvement with increased footwear longitudinal bending stiffness (SMD = - 0.53 [95% CI - 0.90, - 0.17], P = 0.005) and cushioning (SMD = - 0.33 [95% CI - 0.61, 0.06], P = 0.02). However, compared with control, RE did not change with footwear comfort (SMD = - 0.11 [95% CI - 0.42, 0.21], P = 0.51). Barefoot running or minimalist running may be more economical than shod running, high longitudinal bending stiffness and high cushioning shoes could improve RE.

Abstract
Advanced footwear technologies contain thicker, lightweight, and more resilient midsoles and are associated with improved running economy (RE) compared with traditional footwear. This effect is highly variable with some individuals gaining a greater RE benefit, indicating that biomechanics plays a mediating role with respect to the total effect. Indeed, the energy generated by contractile elements and the elastic energy recovered from stretched tendons and ligaments in the legs and feet are likely to change with footwear. Therefore, if RE is to be maximized according to individual characteristics, an individualized approach to footwear selection is required. However, current theoretical frameworks hinder this approach. Here, we introduce a framework that describes causal relationships between footwear properties, biomechanics, and RE. The framework proposes that RE changes with footwear due to (1) a direct effect of footwear properties-for example, increased or decreased energy return-and (2) a mediating effect of footwear on ankle and foot biomechanics and the spring-mass system. By describing the total effect as 2 complementary pathways, the framework facilitates research that aims to separately quantify direct and mediating effects of footwear. This may permit the development of footwear materials that can separately target the direct and individual mediating effects.

Abstract
Every four years the world's best athletes come together to compete in the Olympic games, electrifying audiences with incredible feats of speed, strength, endurance and skill as personal best performances and new records are set. However, the exceptional talent that underpin such performances is incomprehensible to most casual observers who often cannot appreciate how unique these athletes are. In this regard, endurance running, specifically the marathon, a 42.195 km foot race, provides one of the few occasions in sport outside of Olympic, world and national competitions, that permits sport scientists and fans alike to directly compare differences in the physiology between recreational and elite competitors. While these individuals may all cover the same distance, on the same course, on the same day - their experience and the physiological and psychological demands placed upon them are vastly different. There is, in effect, a "race within a race". In the current review we highlight the superior physiology of the elite endurance athlete, emphasizing the gap between elite competitors and well-trained, but less genetically endowed athletes. We draw attention to a range of inconsistencies in how current sports science practices are understood, implemented, and communicated in terms of the elite and not-so-elite endurance athlete.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drafting for drag reduction is a tactic commonly employed by elite athletes of various sports. The strategy has been adopted by Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge on numerous marathon events in the past, including the 2018 and 2022 editions of the Berlin marathon (where Kipchoge set two official world records), as well as in two special attempts to break the 2 h mark for the distance, the Nike Breaking2 (2017) and the INEOS 1:59 Challenge (2019), where Kipchoge used an improved drafting formation to finish in 1:59:40, although that is not recognized as an official record. RESULTS In this study, the drag of a realistic model of a male runner is calculated by computational fluid dynamics for a range of velocities. The formations employed in the past by Kipchoge, as well as alternative formations, are analyzed and systematically compared with respect to mechanical power. In a quest to show that running an official marathon in under 2 h is possible, the power analysis is extended to the pacers. We developed a simple drafting and pacing strategy that Kipchoge could have used to run the 2022 Berlin marathon in a surprising 1 h, 59 min and 48 s. CONCLUSIONS Elite marathon runners can make better use of the pacers to experience reduced drag in races. The associated energy reduction makes it possible to run faster, finishing the race in less time. Using a better drafting strategy and a positive splitting pacing strategy, Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge could have broken the sub 2 h barrier in both the 2018 and 2022 editions of Berlin Marathon.

Abstract
Runners often reduce their pace during inclined running to maintain a constant metabolic workload, known as iso-efficiency speed (a speed-incline combination with the same metabolic intensity as level running). This study investigates changes in lower extremity (LE) joint work profiles when running on an incline at iso-efficiency speed. Eleven collegiate distance runners completed a treadmill running task under three conditions (0%, 4%, and 8% incline). Running velocity was reduced with increasing incline to ensure a consistent metabolic workload across conditions. An 8-camera motion capture system and an instrumented treadmill collected kinematics and ground reaction forces. Visual 3D was used to calculate ankle, knee, and hip joint powers, while custom software (MATLAB) calculated ankle, knee, and hip joint positive and negative work values. A significant increase in LE total positive work was attributed to greater ankle and hip joint positive work with steeper inclines. Reduced LE total negative work resulted from lower knee and hip joint negative work as incline increased. Results suggest that at iso-efficiency speeds, inclined treadmill running increases eccentric demands on the ankle joint and concentric demands on the ankle and hip joints, benefiting training programmes to optimize cardiorespiratory stimuli while reducing mechanical demand on specific extremity structures.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate, in distance runners, the acute effects of moderate durations (60 s per leg) of static (SS) and dynamic stretching (DS) on running economy (RE) and performance. METHODS Twelve recreational runners completed a randomized crossover design. Initially, the second ventilatory threshold (VT2) and the speed associated with the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) (vVO2max) were determined through an incremental test. Then, participants completed submaximal continuous-running (75%VT2 and 85%VT2) and running-until-exhaustion (vVO2max) tests preceded by 3 warm-ups: running plus SS or DS (SS or DS conditions) and running without stretching (NS condition). The SS and DS conditions consisted of 5 minutes of running plus 10 minutes of SS or DS, respectively, and the NS condition consisted of 15 minutes of running without stretching. RE at 75%VT2 and 85%VT2, time to exhaustion, and total running distance were evaluated. Rating of perceived exertion was also assessed. RESULTS Running economy at 75%VT2 resulted significantly better in the DS than in the NS (P < .001) and in the SS (P < .05). Time to exhaustion and total running distance were significantly improved in DS compared with NS (P < .001) and SS (P < .01). No differences in rating of perceived exertion among conditions were found. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that, in recreational distance runners, a preexercise moderate-duration bout of DS improved RE and enhanced total running distance and time to exhaustion, whereas 60 seconds of SS did not induce significant improvements. Overall, our study demonstrates the effectiveness of moderate DS durations in optimizing RE and performance parameters, showing that such effects depend on the stretching modality used.

Abstract
Background Elbow injuries are likely to generate a decreased range of motion (ROM), which might negatively affect athletic performance. To date, the effect of elbow stiffness on endurance running performance has never been studied. We conducted an observational, prospective, cross-over study to examine the impact of elbow stiffness on running economy. Methods Twenty trained athletes performed running economy tests at 12 km·h-1, with and without a limited elbow ROM (flexion: 90°, extension: 45°), imposed by a dynamic brace mimicking a severe elbow stiffness. Relative intensity and performance indexes were measured during a subsequent maximal incremental exercise test. Results Running economy was measured at 180 ± 10.6 mlO2·km-1·kg-1 with a full ROM, and 180.2 ± 12.3 mlO2·km-1·kg-1 with the limited ROM showing a non-significant 0.1% difference (p = 0.871). Discussion Athletes experiencing post-traumatic elbow stiffness can find reassurance in knowing that it does not seem to impact a crucial metric of endurance running performance, namely running economy. Further research could explore elbow movement at different intensities of running, from higher aerobic speeds to sprinting.

Abstract
It is unclear if running power (RP) estimated by the Stryd footpod device maintains its linear relationship to metabolic power (WMET) when switching between training and racing shoe types. This study determined if RP estimated by the Stryd footpod and its other spatiotemporal metrics reflect the improvement (decrease) in WMET when wearing high-performance racing shoes (HPRS; Nike AlphaFly Next%) compared to control training shoes (CTS; Nike Revolution 5). Fourteen well-trained runners completed two treadmill tests: Absolute Velocity Running Test (AVRT; 11.3-14.5 km·hr-1) and Relative Velocity Running Test (RVRT; 55-75% VO2MAX). WMET was determined with indirect calorimetry. RP was not significantly different between shoe types (p > 0.432) during the AVRT, but WMET was ~5% lower in HPRS (p < 0.001). During the RVRT, participants ran ~6% faster and at ~6% higher RP (both, p < 0.001) in HPRS for the same WMET (p = 0.869). Linear mixed models confirmed WMET was ~5% lower in HPRS for a given RP (p < 0.001). Still, RP and WMET were strongly related within shoe types (p < 0.001, conditional-R2 = 0.982, SEE = 2.57%). Form power ratio and ground contact time correlated with energetic cost (p < 0.011) but did not fully reflect the influence of shoe type. Therefore, runners should account for their shoe type when using RP to indicate WMET between training and racing.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been shown to improve chronic diseases. Probiotics have been found to have similar effects. However, the additive effects of HIIT in combination with probiotics supplementation are unclear. The aim of current study was to investigate whether there were additive effects when implementing both HIIT and probiotics simultaneously. METHODS Forty-seven obese middle-aged women (Age: 44.5 ± 5.94 years, body fat percentage: 40.0 ± 4.1%) were recruited and assigned into four groups: control group (C, n = 12), probiotics group (P, n = 12), HIIT group (H, n = 11), and HIIT with probiotics group (HP, n = 12). All the participants consumed probiotics (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TWK10, 6 × 1010 CFU/day) or placebo supplements daily. Exercise intervention groups conducted HIIT training (85-90% vVO2max for 2 min, followed by a 1-min inactive rest interval, repeated for 7 cycles) 3 sessions per week for 8 weeks. Anthropometry, cardiorespiratory endurance, blood glucose, and lipid profile were measured at baseline and after the 8-week intervention. RESULTS After the intervention, there were significant changes between groups in the variations and rates of change in waist circumference, hip circumference, and TTE. The waist circumference in group H significantly increased compared to groups C and P, while group HP did not show significant difference compared to group C. On the other hand, the hip circumference decreased significantly in group HP compared to group C, and the decreased rate in group HP was significantly greater than in groups C and P. Furthermore, the increase rates in TTE were higher in group H and HP compared to group C. CONCLUSION HIIT improves TTE but negatively affects waist circumference compared to the control group. However, when combined with probiotics, the probiotics not only help enhance TTE but also counteract the negative impact on waist circumference and further reduce hip circumference, resulting in a synergistic effect. Abstract
High-intensity training (HIT) has commonly been the most effective training method for improvement in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and work economy, alongside a substantial volume of low-intensity training (LIT). The polarized training model combines both low- and high-intensity training into a specific training intensity distribution and has gained attention as a comprehensive approach. The objective of this review was to systematically search the literature in order to identify the effects of polarized training intensity distribution on VO2max, peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), and work economy among endurance athletes. A literature search was performed using PubMed and SPORTDiscus. A total of 1836 articles were identified, and, after the selection process, 14 relevant studies were included in this review. The findings indicate that a polarized training approach seems to be effective for enhancing VO2max, VO2peak, and work economy over a short-term period for endurance athletes. Specifically, a training intensity distribution involving a moderate to high volume of HIT (15-20%) combined with a substantial volume of LIT (75-80%) appears to be the most beneficial for these improvements. It was concluded that polarized training is a beneficial approach for enhancing VO2max, VO2peak, and work economy in endurance athletes. However, the limited number of studies restricts the generalizability of these findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examines variability in air consumption (AC) between firefighters (FF) working at a standardized pace, evaluates the relationship between air consumption efficiency (ACE) and work economy, identifies parameters associated with ACE, and explores the relationship between ACE and self-paced work rate. METHODS FF completed randomized trials of an air consumption drill at a standardized pace while breathing through a self-contained breathing apparatus and a gas analyzer. A subsample completed another trial at a self-selected pace. RESULTS The average AC variability (±1 standard deviation) was ~3.1 min of cylinder usage (13.7%). AC was positively associated with work economy and numerous physiological and anthropometric outcomes. No relationship was found between ACE and self-paced air consumption drill time. CONCLUSIONS FF working at higher internal strain demonstrated poorer ACE. Improving metabolic tolerance may extend the self-contained breathing apparatus' functional duration to enhance productivity and safety.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Running economy (RE) deteriorates during prolonged running, although the effect of measuring energy cost (EC) or oxygen cost (OC) on the magnitude of these changes has not been investigated. Similarly, it is unknown if runners' performance level may influence the deterioration of RE during prolonged running. The aims of this study were to compare changes in EC and OC measurements of RE during a prolonged run in a large cohort of well-trained male runners, and to compare changes between runners of high- and low-performance standard. METHODS Forty-four male runners (maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O 2max ) 62.4 mL·kg -1 ·min -1 ; 10-km time: 35:50 ± 4:40 mm:ss) completed an incremental test determining lactate threshold 1 (LT1) and V̇O 2max , and on a separate occasion, a 90-min run at LT1. Respiratory gases were collected at 15-min intervals. Subsequently, subgroups of high- (HP; 10-km time: 31:20 ± 01:00 mm:ss) and low-performing (LP; 10-km time: 41:50 ± 01:20 mm:ss) runners were compared. RESULTS RE deterioration was only fractionally larger when expressed as OC than EC (0.1% greater from 30-90 min; P < 0.001), perhaps due to the small change in respiratory exchange ratio (-0.01) in this study. For the HP group, increases were lower than LP after 90 min in both EC (+2.3% vs +4.3%; P < 0.01) and OC (+2.4% vs +4.5%; P < 0.01). Similarly, at standardized distances, changes were lower for HP versus LP, for example, at 16.7 km + 1.0 versus +3.2% for EC ( P < 0.01), and +1.2 vs +3.4% for OC ( P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The deterioration of RE was dependent on athlete's performance level, with HP runners displaying superior RE durability. The use of EC or OC had only a fractional influence on RE durability, although this may gain importance with larger shifts in substrate metabolism.

Abstract
Endurance performance declines with advancing age. Of the three main physiological factors that determine endurance running performance [maximal oxygen consumption (V̇o2max), lactate threshold, and running economy (RE)], V̇o2max appears to be most affected by age. Although endurance performance declines with age, recently, endurance performance has rapidly improved in master athletes as the number of master athletes competing in endurance events has increased. Master athletes represent an intriguing model to study healthy aging. In this case study, we reassessed the physiological profile of a 76-yr-old distance runner who broke the marathon world record for men over 70 yr of age in 2018. This runner was tested a few months before breaking the world record and retested in 2024. Between 2018 and 2024, his marathon running velocity decreased significantly. Therefore, the purpose of this case study was to determine the physiological changes that explain his performance decline. RE remained similar to 2018, and while there was not a clear breakpoint in blood lactate, he still likely runs marathons at a high percentage (∼90%) of his V̇o2max. However, V̇o2max declined by 15.1%. HRmax declined by 3.2% and maximal O2 pulse declined by 12.4%, suggesting that maximal stroke volume and/or arteriovenous O2 difference decreased. Altogether, although this marathoner continues to compete at an elite level, his performance has declined since his record-breaking marathon due to a reduction in V̇o2max. This is likely caused by reductions in maximal stroke volume and/or arteriovenous O2 difference. We speculate that these changes reflect primarily age-related processes.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We performed 6-yr follow-up testing on a world record-breaking master marathon runner. We determined that his performance declined since his record-breaking marathon in 2018 primarily due to a reduction in V̇o2max. His max heart rate (HR) changed minimally, but his peak O2 pulse decreased, suggesting that his maximal stroke volume and/or arteriovenous O2 difference decreased. These changes likely reflect primarily age-related effects in the absence of an overt pathological disease process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various studies have shown that the type of intensity measure affects training intensity distribution (TID) computation. These conclusions arise from studies presenting data from meso- and macrocycles, while microcycles, e.g., high-intensity interval training shock microcycles (HIIT-SM) have been neglected so far. Previous literature has suggested that the time spent in the high-intensity zone, i.e., zone 3 (Z3) or the "red zone", during HIIT may be important to achieve improvements in endurance performance parameters. Therefore, this randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the TID based on running velocity (TIDV), running power (TIDP) and heart rate (TIDHR) during a 7-day HIIT-SM. Twenty-nine endurance-trained participant were allocated to a HIIT-SM consisting of 10 HIIT sessions without (HSM, n = 9) or with (HSM + LIT, n = 9) additional low-intensity training or a control group (n = 11). Moreover, we explored relationships between time spent in Z3 determined by running velocity (Z3V), running power (Z3P), heart rate (Z3HR), oxygen uptake ( Z 3 V ˙ O 2 ) and changes in endurance performance. RESULTS Both intervention groups revealed a polarized pattern for TIDV (HSM: Z1: 38 ± 17, Z2: 16 ± 17, Z3: 46 ± 2%; HSM + LIT: Z1: 59 ± 18, Z2: 14 ± 18, Z3: 27 ± 2%) and TIDP (Z1: 50 ± 8, Z2: 14 ± 11, Z3: 36 ± 7%; Z1: 62 ± 15, Z2: 12 ± 16, Z3: 26 ± 2%), while TIDHR (Z1: 48 ± 13, Z2: 26 ± 11, Z3: 26 ± 7%; Z1: 65 ± 17, Z2: 22 ± 18, Z3: 13 ± 4%) showed a pyramidal pattern. Time in Z3HR was significantly less compared to Z3V and Z3P in both intervention groups (all p < 0.01). There was a time x intensity measure interaction for time in Z3 across the 10 HIIT sessions for HSM + LIT (p < 0.001, pη2 = 0.30). Time in Z3V and Z3P within each single HIIT session remained stable over the training period for both intervention groups. Time in Z3HR declined in HSM from the first (47%) to the last (28%) session, which was more pronounced in HSM + LIT (45% to 16%). A moderate dose-response relationship was found for time in Z3V and changes in peak power output (rs = 0.52, p = 0.028) as well as time trial performance (rs = - 0.47, p = 0.049) with no such associations regarding time in Z3P, Z3HR, and Z 3 V ˙ O 2 . CONCLUSION The present study reveals that the type of intensity measure strongly affects TID computation during a HIIT-SM. As heart rate tends to underestimate the intensity during HIIT-SM, heart rate-based training decisions should be made cautiously. In addition, time in Z3V was most closely associated with changes in endurance performance. Thus, for evaluating a HIIT-SM, we suggest integrating a comprehensive set of intensity measures. Abstract
Beetroot juice supplementation (BRJ) should increase nitric oxide bioavailability under conditions of muscle deoxygenation and acidosis that are a normal consequence of the maximal effort exercise test used to identify forearm critical impulse. We hypothesized BRJ would improve oxygen delivery:demand matching and forearm critical impulse performance. Healthy males (20.8 ± 2.4 years) participated in a randomized crossover trial between October 2017 and May 2018 (Queen's University, Kingston, ON). Participants completed 10 min of rhythmic maximal effort forearm handgrip exercise 2.5 h post placebo (PL) vs. BRJ (9 completed PL/BRJ vs. 4 completed BRJ/PL) within a 2 week period. Data are presented as mean ± SD. There was a main effect of drink (PL > BRJ) for oxygen extraction (P = 0.033, ηp2 = 0.351) and oxygen consumption/force (P = 0.017, ηp2 = 0.417). There was a drink × time interaction (PL > BRJ) for oxygen consumption/force (P = 0.035, ηp2 = 0.216) between 75 and 360 s (1.25-6 min) from exercise onset. BRJ did not influence oxygen delivery (P = 0.953, ηp2 = 0.000), oxygen consumption (P = 0.064, ηp2 = 0.278), metabolites ((lactate) (P = 0.196, ηp2 = 0.135), pH (P = 0.759, ηp2 = 0.008)) or power-duration performance parameters (critical impulse (P = 0.379, d = 0.253), W' (P = 0.733, d = 0.097)). BRJ during all-out handgrip exercise does not influence oxygen delivery or exercise performance. Oxygen cost of contraction with BRJ is reduced as contraction impulse is declining during maximal effort exercise resulting in less oxygen extraction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to study the clinical decision-making practice of Italian physiotherapists in return to running (RTR) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, and the differences in decision-making in relation to physiotherapist's characteristics. METHODS An online survey was developed, 1404 physiotherapists were contacted by email, via chartered association, or via social media. RESULTS Most respondents (83%) indicated that the RTR decision should be made by a multidisciplinary team with RTR clearance around 3-4 months after surgery (47%). The most important criteria guiding the RTR decision were knee flexion range of motion (ROM) >130° (50%), complete extension ROM (95%), no pain (45%) and no effusion (68%). A Limb Symmetry Index (LSI) >70% for quadriceps (49%), hamstring (48%) and LSI >90% for posterolateral hip (45%) and triceps surae strength (42%) should be achieved for RTR. Approximately half of the participants (49%) do not consider ACL laxity tests to be used for RTR decisions. Response differences were found between sample subgroups. More experienced physiotherapists and those with post graduate training had lower thresholds to clear RTR. CONCLUSIONS Experienced physiotherapists who treated a higher number of patients after ACL reconstruction, who had certified specialist training and a specific interest towards ACL rehabilitation, generally reported clinical practice modalities more in line with current evidence.

Abstract
This study investigated the test-retest reliability of running economy (RE) and metabolic and cardiorespiratory parameters related to endurance running performance using a multistage incremental treadmill test. On two occasions separated by 21-28 days, 12 male middle- and long-distance runners ran at 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 km/hr for 8 min each stage, immediately followed by a ramp test to volitional exhaustion. Carbohydrate (10% maltodextrin solution) was consumed before and during the test to provide ∼1 g/min of exercise. RE, minute ventilation (V˙E), oxygen consumption (V˙O2), carbon dioxide production (V˙CO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), heart rate (HR), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and blood glucose and lactate concentrations were recorded for each stage and at volitional exhaustion. Time-to-exhaustion (TTE) and peak oxygen consumption (V˙O2peak) during the ramp test were also recorded. Absolute reliability, calculated as the coefficient of variation (CV) between repeated measures, ranged from 2.3% to 3.1% for RE, whereas relative reliability, calculated as the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), ranged from .42 to .79. V˙E, V˙O2, V˙O2peak, V˙CO2, RER, and HR had a CV of 1.1%-4.3% across all stages. TTE and RPE had a CV of 7.2% and 2.3%-10.8%, respectively, while glucose and lactate had a CV of 4.0%-17.8%. All other parameters, except for blood glucose, were demonstrated to have good-to-excellent relative reliability assessed by ICC. Measures of RE, V˙O2peak, and TTE were reliable during this two-phase multistage incremental treadmill test in a cohort of trained and highly trained male middle- and long-distance runners.

This study compared the impact of interval anaerobic training (IAT) sessions consisting of either high-intensity running or throwing that were performed twice a week together with regular judo training on the anaerobic and aerobic performance of experienced judo athletes. Employing a repeated-measures, counterbalancing, research design, 12 national team judo athletes (7 women and 5 men; mean age, 20.4 ± 0.95 years; mean judo training experience, 13.4 ± 1.4 years; competitive level, black belt first and second Dan) performed each IAT modality for 6 weeks, for a full training cycle of 12 weeks. Assessments of their anaerobic fitness (Cunningham and Faulkner Anaerobic Treadmill Test), sport-specific anaerobic fitness (Special Judo Fitness Test [SJFT]), and aerobic capacity (maximal incremental treadmill running test) were performed before, after 6 weeks, and after 12 weeks of training. The uphill running performance improved by 13.1% over the 12-week period ( p = 0.047). Simultaneously, there was a 9.0% improvement in the SJFT index and a 6.9% increase in the number of throws ( p = 0.011 and p = 0.017, respectively). Although a trend for throwing drills being more effective than interval sprint running was observed, the interaction effect lacked statistical significance ( p = 0.074). Moreover, no substantial changes were noted in aerobic endurance markers. In conclusion, this study suggests that incorporating specific and nonspecific high-intensity drills into a routine training regimen may enhance anaerobic capacity among well-trained judo athletes, potentially leading to favorable competitive outcomes.

Abstract
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) provides a noninvasive and integrated assessment of the response of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems to exercise. This information improves the diagnosis, risk stratification, and therapeutic management of several clinical conditions. Additionally, CPET is the gold standard test for cardiorespiratory fitness quantification and exercise prescription, both in patients with cardiopulmonary disease undergoing cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation programs and in healthy individuals, such as high-level athletes. In this setting, the relevance of practical knowledge about this exam is useful and of interest to several medical specialties other than cardiology. However, despite its multiple established advantages, CPET remains underused. This article aims to increase awareness of the value of CPET in clinical practice and to inform clinicians about its main indications, applications, and basic interpretation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The metabolic cost of locomotion is a key factor in walking and running performance. It has been studied by analysing the activation and co-activation of the muscles of the lower limbs. However, these measures do not comprehensively address muscle mechanics, in contrast to approaches using muscle moments and co-contraction. RESEARCH QUESTION What is the effect of speed and type of locomotion on muscle moments and co-contraction, and their relationship with metabolic cost during walking and running? METHODS Eleven recreational athletes (60.5 ± 7.1 kg; 169.0 ± 6.6 cm; 23.6 ± 3.3 years) walked and ran on a treadmill at different speeds, including a similar speed of 1.75 m.s-1. Metabolic cost was estimated from gas exchange measurements. Muscle moments and co-contraction of ankle and knee flexors and extensors during the stance and swing phases were estimated using an electromyographic-driven model. RESULTS Both the slowest and fastest walking speeds had significantly higher metabolic costs than intermediate ones (p < 0.05). The metabolic cost of walking was correlated with plantarflexors moment during swing phase (r = 0.62 at 0.5 m.s-1, r = 0.67 at 1,25 m.s-1), dorsiflexors moment during stance phase (r = 0.65 at 1.25 m.s-1, r = 0.67 at 1.5 and 1.75 m.s-1), and ankle co-contraction during the stance phase (r = 0.63 at 1.25 and 1.75 m.s-1). The metabolic cost of running at 3.25 m.s-1 during the swing phase was correlated with the dorsiflexors moment (r = 0.63), plantarflexors moment (r = 0.61) and ankle co-contraction (r = 0.60). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Fluctuations in metabolic cost of walking and running could be explained, at least in part, by increased ankle antagonist moments and co-contraction.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to determine associations between running economy (RE) and running sagittal plane kinematic and kinetic parameters. METHOD A total of 30 male recreational runners (age: 21.21 ± 1.22 yr, V̇O 2max : 54.61 ± 5.42 mL·kg -1 ·min -1 ) participated in two separate test sessions. In the first session, the participant's body composition and RE at 10 and 12 km·h -1 were measured. In the second session, measurements were taken for the sagittal plane of hip, knee, and ankle angles and range of motion (ROM), as well as ground reaction force. RESULTS Moderate correlations were found between lower energy costs at 12 km·h -1 and smaller hip flexion at toe-off ( r = 0.373) as well as smaller peak hip flexion during stance ( r = 0.397). During the swing phase, lower energy costs at 10 km·h -1 were moderately correlated with smaller peak knee flexion and smaller knee flexion and extension ROM ( r = 0.366-0.443). Lower energy costs at 12 km·h -1 were moderately correlated with smaller peak hip and knee flexion as well as knee extension ROM ( r = 0.369-0.427). In terms of kinetics, there was a moderate correlation between higher energy costs at 10 km·h -1 and larger peak active force, as well as larger peak braking and propulsion force ( r = -0.470-0.488). Lower energy costs at 12 km·h -1 were moderately to largely correlated with smaller peak impact and braking force ( r = 0.486 and -0.500, respectively). Regarding the statistical parametric mapping analysis, most outcomes showed associations with RE at 10 km·h -1 , including knee flexion (42.5%-65.5% of the gait cycle), ankle plantarflexion (32.5%-36% of the gait cycle), active force (30.5%-35% of the stance phase), and propulsion force (68%-72.5% of the stance phase). Lower energy costs at 12 km·h -1 were correlated with smaller hip flexion (5.5%-12% and 66.5%-74%) and smaller knee flexion (57%-57.5%) during the running gait cycle. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that biomechanical factors are associated with RE in recreational runners. To design effective training methods to improve RE, coaches and runners should focus on the sagittal plane kinematics of the hip, knee, and ankle, as well as lower vertical and horizontal kinetic parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drafting is a common technique to reduce the drag experienced by elite runners on races, leading to faster finish times. The tactic has been successfully used in previous marathon world records. In the 2023 Chicago Marathon, Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum broke the marathon record after a 2:00:35 finish. This feat is impressive considering the lack of use of drafting, despite the availability of two pacers for the majority of the race. METHODS In this study, the drag faced by Kiptum and his pacers during the race is calculated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The performance of each runner is evaluated from an energetic standpoint, and the analysis is extended to include more efficient drafting formations. RESULTS Running in proper formations results in drag reductions in excess of 70% for the main runner. Our results indicate that, by properly using the advantages of drafting, Kiptum could have finished the race at a staggering 1:57:34, a full three minutes better than his own record and 215 s better than the previous world record. CONCLUSION Proper use of drafting does indeed improve the energetic performance of a runner, allowing for lower race times and potentially helping elite runners in breaking the 2-h barrier for a marathon.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the criterion and longitudinal validity of field- and laboratory-derived heart rate (HR) indices of resting and submaximal fitness tests (SMFTs) as measures of cardiorespiratory fitness. DESIGN Observational, repeated measures. METHODS Twenty-nine semi-professional footballers participated. Laboratory assessments took place at the start and end of a preseason training period, whereby resting, SMFT HR-derived indices, and criterion measures of cardiorespiratory fitness (running economy [RE], maximal oxygen uptake [V̇O2 max] and aerobic speed [MAS]) were collected. Throughout this training period, two field-based SMFT protocols, prescribed at different intensities, were administered weekly. Individual slopes were calculated from the analysis of within-athlete change scores. Associations between laboratory and field measures were assessed via Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) and linear regression models. RESULTS Relationships between SMFT HR-derived indices from laboratory and field were very-large for exercise HR (r = 0.74 to 0.87) and moderate to very-large for HR recovery (0.43 to 0.76). Moderate to very-large inverse relationships were observed between exercise HR and HR recovery with V̇O2 max and MAS (-0.41 to -0.78), whereas resting HR showed no substantial relationships. Changes in exercise HR showed large and very-large inverse correlations with preseason changes in V̇O2 max (-0.54 to -0.60) and MAS (-0.64 to -0.83). Relationships between changes in HR recovery and maximal cardiorespiratory criterion measures were moderate to large (-0.32 to -0.63). CONCLUSION SMFT exercise HR is a valid proxy measure of cardiorespiratory fitness irrespective of test setting, whereas the validity of HRR remains elusive and appears to vary between exercise intensities.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to derive mathematical equations that closely describe published data on world record running speed as a function of distance, age, and sex. Running speed declines with increasing distance and age. Over long distances, where aerobic metabolism is dominant, speed declines in proportion to the logarithm of distance. Over short distances, anaerobic metabolism contributes significantly to performance, and speed is increased relative to the trend of the long-distance data. Equations are derived that explicitly represent these effects. The decline in speed with age is represented by an age-dependent multiplicative factor, which exhibits increasing sensitivity to age as age increases. Using these equations, data are analyzed separately for males and females, and close fits to published data are demonstrated, particularly for younger age groups. These equations provide insight into the contributions of aerobic and anaerobic components of metabolism to athletic performance and a framework for comparisons of performance across wide ranges of distance and age.NEW & NOTEWORTHY World record speeds at different distances for men and women in different age categories are used to develop a model to predict running performance as a function of race distance, age, and sex. This empirical model quantifies the decline in running speed with distance and age in a way that provides insight into the aerobic and anaerobic contributions to running speed and may help with developing training strategies for different age groups at various distances.

Abstract
Successful performance in long distance race requires both high efficiency and stability. Previous research has demonstrated the high running efficiency of trained runners, but no prior study quantitatively addressed their orbital stability. In this study, we evaluated the efficiency and orbital stability of 8 professional long-distance runners and compared them with those of 8 novices. We calculated the cost of transport and normalized mechanical energy to assess physiological and mechanical running efficiency, respectively. We quantified orbital stability using Floquet Multipliers, which assess how fast a system converges to a limit cycle under perturbations. Our results show that professional runners run with significantly higher physiological and mechanical efficiency but with weaker orbital stability compared to novices. This finding is consistent with the inevitable trade-off between efficiency and stability; increase in orbital stability necessitates increase in energy dissipation. We suggest that professional runners have developed the ability to exploit inertia beneficially, enabling them to achieve higher efficiency partly at the cost of sacrificing orbital stability.

Abstract
Establishing the links between running technique and economy remains elusive due to high inter-individual variability. Clustering runners by technique may enable tailored training recommendations, yet it is unclear if different techniques are equally economical and whether clusters are speed-dependent. This study aimed to identify clusters of runners based on technique and to compare cluster kinematics and running economy. Additionally, we examined the agreement of clustering partitions of the same runners at different speeds. Trunk and lower-body kinematics were captured from 84 trained runners at different speeds on a treadmill. We used Principal Component Analysis for dimensionality reduction and agglomerative hierarchical clustering to identify groups of runners with a similar technique, and we evaluated cluster agreement across speeds. Clustering runners at different speeds independently produced different partitions, suggesting single speed clustering can fail to capture the full speed profile of a runner. The two clusters identified using data from the whole range of speeds showed differences in pelvis tilt and duty factor. In agreement with self-optimisation theories, there were no differences in running economy, and no differences in participants' characteristics between clusters. Considering inter-individual technique variability may enhance the efficacy of training designs as opposed to 'one size fits all' approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The running performance of middle-distance and long-distance runners is determined by factors such as maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), velocity at VO2max (vVO2max), maximum metabolic steady state (MMSS), running economy, and sprint capacity. Strength training is a proven strategy for improving running performance in endurance runners. However, the effects of different strength training methods on the determinants of running performance are unclear. OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to compare the effect of different strength training methods (e.g., high load, submaximal load, plyometric, combined) on performance (i.e., time trial and time until exhaustion) and its determinants (i.e., VO2max, vVO2max, MMSS, sprint capacity) in middle-distance and long-distance runners. METHODS A systematic search was conducted across electronic databases (Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, SCOPUS). The search included articles indexed up to November 2022, using various keywords combined with Boolean operators. The eligibility criteria were: (1) middle- and long-distance runners, without restriction on sex or training/competitive level; (2) application of a strength training method for ≥ 3 weeks, including high load training (≥ 80% of one repetition maximum), submaximal load training (40-79% of one repetition maximum), plyometric training, and combined training (i.e., two or more methods); (3) endurance running training control group under no strength training or under strength training with low loads (< 40% of one repetition maximum); (4) running performance, VO2max, vVO2max, MMSS and/or sprint capacity measured before and after a strength training intervention program; (5) randomized and non-randomized controlled studies. The certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach. A random-effects meta-analysis and moderator analysis were performed using Comprehensive meta-analysis (version 3.3.0.70). RESULTS The certainty of the evidence was very low to moderate. The studies included 324 moderately trained, 272 well trained, and 298 highly trained athletes. The strength training programs were between 6 and 40 weeks duration, with one to four intervention sessions per week. High load and combined training methods induced moderate (effect size = - 0.469, p = 0.029) and large effect (effect size = - 1.035, p = 0.036) on running performance, respectively. While plyometric training was not found to have a significant effect (effect size = - 0.210, p = 0.064). None of the training methods improved VO2max, vVO2max, MMSS, or sprint capacity (all p > 0.072). Moderators related to subject (i.e., sex, age, body mass, height, VO2max, performance level, and strength training experience) and intervention (i.e., weeks, sessions per week and total sessions) characteristics had no effect on running performance variables or its determinants (all p > 0.166). CONCLUSIONS Strength training with high loads can improve performance (i.e., time trial, time to exhaustion) in middle-distance and long-distance runners. A greater improvement may be obtained when two or more strength training methods (i.e., high load training, submaximal load training and/or plyometric training) are combined, although with trivial effects on VO2max, vVO2max, MMSS, or sprint capacity.

Abstract
The heat generation of the human body dramatically varies between resting and active status, so dynamic heat dissipation is required to ensure optimal thermal comfort. Herein, we propose a spectrally self-adaptive smart fabric (SSSF) by covering polyester fabric with silver nanowires, which autonomously adjusts its emissivity in response to the body's movement status from dry to wet states. During periods of inactivity, the SSSF maintains radiative heat insulation with a low emissivity state of 0.39. Conversely, during vigorous physical activity, its emissivity is improved to 0.83 when the sweat penetrates the SSSF, facilitating greater heat dissipation. Comparative experiments demonstrate the superior thermal management capabilities of the SSSF, with a 19.5 % reduction in heat dissipation power relative to traditional fabrics when in the low emissivity mode, and an impressive 67.6 % enhancement in heat dissipation power as it changes from low to high emissivity mode. This work provides an adaptive approach to emissivity modulation, offering an effective solution for dynamic heat dissipation of humans across various states of activity, thereby enhancing personal thermal comfort.

Abstract
Ratio-scaled VO2 is the widely used method for quantifying running economy (RE). However, this method should be criticized due to its theoretical defect and curvilinear relationship indicated by the allometric scaling, although no consensus has been achieved on the generally accepted exponent b value of body weight. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a quantitative synthesis of the reported exponents used to scale VO2 to body weight. Six electronic databases were searched based on related terms. Inclusion criteria involved human cardiopulmonary testing data, derived exponents, and reported precision statistics. The random-effects model was applied to statistically analyze exponent b. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were conducted to explore the potential factors contributing to variation in b values. The probability of the true exponent being below 1 in future studies was calculated. The estimated b values were all below 1 and aligned with the 3/4 power law, except for the 95 % prediction interval of the estimated fat-free body weight exponent b. A publication bias and a slightly greater I2 and τ statistic were also observed in the fat-free body weight study cohort. The estimated probabilities of the true body weight exponent, full body weight exponent, and fat-free body weight exponent being lower than 1 were 93.8 % (likely), 95.1 % (very likely), and 94.5 % (likely) respectively. 'Sex difference', 'age category', 'sporting background', and 'testing modality' were four potential but critical variables that impacted exponent b. Overall, allometric-scaled RE should be measured by full body weight with exponent b raised to 3/4.

J Strength Cond Res 38(5): 985-990, 2024-Running economy is a key component of distance running performance and is associated with gait parameters. However, there is no consensus of the link between the running economy (RE), ground contact time, and footstrike patterns. Thus, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between RE, ground contact time, and thigh muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) in highly trained distance runners and to compare these parameters between 2 habitual footstrike patterns (midfoot vs. rearfoot). Seventeen male distance runners ran on a treadmill to measure RE and gait parameters. We collected the CSAs of the right thigh muscle using a magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The RE had a significant negative relationship with distance running performance ( r = -0.50) and ground contact time ( r = -0.51). The ground contact time had a significant negative relationship with the normalized CSAs of the vastus lateralis muscle ( r = -0.60) and hamstrings ( r = -0.54). No significant differences were found in RE, ground contact time, or normalized CSAs of muscles between midfoot ( n = 10) and rearfoot ( n = 7) strikers. These results suggest that large CSAs of knee extensor muscles results in short ground contact time and worse RE. The effects of the footstrike pattern on the RE appear insignificant, and the preferred footstrike pattern can be recommended for running in highly trained runners.

Abstract
Beetroot juice (BRJ) supplementation increases nitric oxide bioavailability with hypoxia and acidosis, characteristics of high-intensity exercise. We investigated whether BRJ improved forearm oxygen delivery:demand matching in an intensity-dependent manner. Healthy men (21 ± 2.5 years) participated in a randomized crossover trial between October 2017 and May 2018 (Queen's University, Kingston, ON, Canada). Participants completed a forearm incremental exercise test to limit of tolerance (IET-LOT) 2.5 h post placebo (PL) versus BRJ (2 completed PL/BRJ vs. 9 completed BRJ/PL) within a 2-week period. Data are presented as mean ± standard deviation. There was a significant main effect of drink (PL < BRJ; P = 0.042, ηp2 = 0.385) and drink × intensity interaction for arteriovenous oxygen difference (PL < BRJ; P = 0.03; ηp2= 0.197; 20%-50% and 90% LOT). BRJ did not influence oxygen delivery (P = 0.893, ηp2 = 0.002), forearm blood flow (P = 0.589, ηp2 = 0.03) (forearm vascular conductance (P = 0.262, ηp2 = 0.124), mean arterial pressure (P = 0.254,ηp2 = 0.128)), oxygen consumption (P = 0.194, ηp2 = 0.179) or LOT (P = 0.432, d = 0.247). In healthy men, BRJ did not improve forearm oxygen delivery (vasodilatory or pressor response) during IET-LOT. Increased arteriovenous oxygen difference at submaximal intensities did not significantly influence oxygen consumption or performance across the entire range of forearm exercise intensities. This study adds to the growing body of evidence that BRJ does not influence small muscle mass blood flow in humans regardless of exercise intensity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Running economy is defined as the energy demand at submaximal running speed, a key determinant of overall running performance. Strength training can improve running economy, although the magnitude of its effect may depend on factors such as the strength training method and the speed at which running economy is assessed. AIM To compare the effect of different strength training methods (e.g., high loads, plyometric, combined methods) on the running economy in middle- and long-distance runners, over different running speeds, through a systematic review with meta-analysis. METHODS A systematic search was conducted across several electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and SCOPUS. Using different keywords and Boolean operators for the search, all articles indexed up to November 2022 were considered for inclusion. In addition, the PICOS criteria were applied: Population: middle- and long-distance runners, without restriction on sex or training/competitive level; Intervention: application of a strength training method for ≥ 3 weeks (i.e., high loads (≥ 80% of one repetition maximum); submaximal loads [40-79% of one repetition maximum); plyometric; isometric; combined methods (i.e., two or more methods); Comparator: control group that performed endurance running training but did not receive strength training or received it with low loads (< 40% of one repetition maximum); Outcome: running economy, measured before and after a strength training intervention programme; Study design: randomized and non-randomized controlled studies. Certainty of evidence was assessed with the GRADE approach. A three-level random-effects meta-analysis and moderator analysis were performed using R software (version 4.2.1). RESULTS The certainty of the evidence was found to be moderate for high load training, submaximal load training, plyometric training and isometric training methods and low for combined methods. The studies included 195 moderately trained, 272 well trained, and 185 highly trained athletes. The strength training programmes were between 6 and 24 weeks' duration, with one to four sessions executed per week. The high load and combined methods induced small (ES = - 0.266, p = 0.039) and moderate (ES = - 0.426, p = 0.018) improvements in running economy at speeds from 8.64 to 17.85 km/h and 10.00 to 14.45 km/h, respectively. Plyometric training improved running economy at speeds ≤ 12.00 km/h (small effect, ES = - 0.307, p = 0.028, β1 = 0.470, p = 0.017). Compared to control groups, no improvement in running economy (assessed speed: 10.00 to 15.28 and 9.75 to 16.00 km/h, respectively) was noted after either submaximal or isometric strength training (all, p > 0.131). The moderator analyses showed that running speed (β1 = - 0.117, p = 0.027) and VO2max (β1 = - 0.040, p = 0.020) modulated the effect of high load strength training on running economy (i.e., greater improvements at higher speeds and higher VO2max). CONCLUSIONS Compared to a control condition, strength training with high loads, plyometric training, and a combination of strength training methods may improve running economy in middle- and long-distance runners. Other methods such as submaximal load training and isometric strength training seem less effective to improve running economy in this population. Of note, the data derived from this systematic review suggest that although both high load training and plyometric training may improve running economy, plyometric training might be effective at lower speeds (i.e., ≤ 12.00 km/h) and high load strength training might be particularly effective in improving running economy (i) in athletes with a high VO2max, and (ii) at high running speeds. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of a wearable device and a phone application for measuring spatiotemporal parameters and their relationship with running economy (RE) by comparing them with photocell data in runners of different abilities. Twenty-three male runners were divided into well-trained and recreational groups and performed a 4-min running bout at 17 and 13 km·h-1 respectively. During the bout, were measured the spatiotemporal parameters with three devices (Stryd, Runmatic, and Optojump) and RE with a gas analyser. Pearson correlation showed perfect relationships for stride frequency (SF) and stride length (SL) between the devices, and moderate for flight time (FT) and contact time (CT). There were no correlations between the spatiotemporal parameters and RE measurements. Coefficient of variation was ~ 5% in all devices for CT, SF, and SL, and higher for FT (15-24%). CT was underestimated (15-16% with Runmatic and Stryd, respectively) and FT was overestimated (36-40%) compared to Optojump. Bland-Altman plots revealed that Runmatic could be a more accurate system than Stryd. In conclusion, both devices were valid tools for measuring spatiotemporal parameters during running at RE speed. Runmatic was more valid and reliable in comparison with Stryd. In addition, at lower running speeds the devices showed less reliability.

Abstract
Introduction The present study investigated the role of training intensity in the dose-response relationship between endurance training and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The hypothesis was that beginners would benefit from an increase in training intensity after an initial training phase, even if the energy expenditure was not altered. For this purpose, 26 weeks of continuous moderate training (control group, CON) was compared to training with gradually increasing intensity (intervention group, INC) but constant energy expenditure. Methods Thirty-one healthy, untrained subjects (13 men, 18 women; 46 ± 8 years; body mass index 25.4 ± 3.3 kg m-2; maximum oxygen uptake, VO2max 34 ± 4 ml min-1 kg-1) trained for 10 weeks with moderate intensity [3 days/week for 50 min/session at 55% heart rate reserve (HRreserve)] before allocation to one of two groups. A minimization technique was used to ensure homogeneous groups. While group CON continued with moderate intensity for 16 weeks, the INC group trained at 70% HRreserve for 8 weeks and thereafter participated in a 4 × 4 training program (high-intensity interval training, HIIT) for 8 weeks. Constant energy expenditure was ensured by indirect calorimetry and corresponding adjustment of the training volume. Treadmill tests were performed at baseline and after 10, 18, and 26 weeks. Results The INC group showed improved VO2max (3.4 ± 2.7 ml kg-1 min-1) to a significantly greater degree than the CON group (0.4 ± 2.9 ml kg-1 min-1) (P = 0.020). In addition, the INC group exhibited improved Vmax (1.7 ± 0.7 km h-1) to a significantly greater degree than the CON group (1.0 ± 0.5 km h-1) (P = 0.001). The reduction of resting HR was significantly larger in the INC group (7 ± 4 bpm) than in the CON group (2 ± 6 bpm) (P = 0.001). The mean heart rate in the submaximal exercise test was reduced significantly in the CON group (5 ± 6 bpm; P = 0.007) and in the INC group (8 ± 7 bpm; P = 0.001), without a significant interaction between group and time point. Conclusion Increasing intensity leads to greater adaptations in CRF than continuing with moderate intensity, even without increased energy expenditure. After 26 weeks of training in the moderate- and higher-intensity domain, energy-matched HIIT elicited further adaptations in cardiorespiratory fitness. Thus, training intensity plays a crucial role in the dose-response relationship between endurance training and fitness in untrained but healthy individuals. Abstract
PURPOSE Acute ingestion of a ketone monoester, with and without co-ingestion of carbohydrate, was investigated for effects on running economy (RE), time to exhaustion (TTE), and other related indices of endurance running performance. METHODS Using a three condition, placebo-controlled, randomized crossover design, 11 male middle- and long-distance runners ran at five submaximal speeds (10-14 km·h -1 ) on a motorized treadmill for 8 min each, immediately followed by a ramp test to volitional exhaustion. Participants consumed either a 10% carbohydrate solution (CHO), a 10% carbohydrate solution with 750 mg·kg -1 body mass of an ( R )-3-hydroxybutyl ( R )-3-hydroxybutyrate ketone monoester (CHO + KE), or 750 mg·kg -1 body mass of the ketone monoester in flavored water (KE) before (two-thirds of the dose) and during (one-third of the dose) exercise. RESULTS β-hydroxybutyrate concentration averaged 1.8 ± 0.3 and 2.1 ± 0.3 mM during exercise in CHO + KE and KE, respectively. RE was lower at each submaximal running speed (effect size = 0.48-0.98) by an average of 4.1% in KE compared with CHO, but not between CHO + KE and CHO. TTE did not differ between CHO (369 ± 116 s), CHO + KE (342 ± 99 s), or KE (333 ± 106 s) ( P = 0.093). CONCLUSIONS Acute ingestion of a ketone monoester without carbohydrate, but not when coingested with carbohydrate, improved RE in middle- and long-distance runners at a range of submaximal running speeds and did not alter TTE in a short-duration ramp test to volitional exhaustion. Further investigation is required to examine if these differences translate into positive performance outcomes over longer durations of exercise.

Abstract
A growing number of companies are developing or using wearable sensor technologies that can monitor, analyse and transmit data from humans in real time that can be used by the sporting, biomedical and media industries. To explore this phenomenon, we describe and review two high-profile sporting events where innovations in wearable technologies were trialled: the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020, Japan) and the 2022 adidas Road to Records (Germany). These two major sporting events were the first time academic and industry partners came together to implement real-time wearable solutions during major competition, to protect the health of athletes competing in hot and humid environments, as well as to better understand how these metrics can be used moving forwards. Despite the undoubted benefits of such wearables, there are well-founded concerns regarding their use including: (1) limited evidence quantifying the potential beneficial effects of analysing specific parameters, (2) the quality of hardware and provided data, (3) information overload, (4) data security and (5) exaggerated marketing claims. Employment and sporting rules and regulations also need to evolve to facilitate the use of wearable devices. There is also the potential to obtain real-time data that will oblige medical personnel to make crucial decisions around whether their athletes should continue competing or withdraw for health reasons. To protect athletes, the urgent need is to overcome these ethical/data protection concerns and develop wearable technologies that are backed by quality science. The fields of sport and exercise science and medicine provide an excellent platform to understand the impact of wearable sensors on performance, wellness, health, and disease.

Abstract
New and promising variables are being developed to analyze performance and fatigue in trail running, such as mechanical power, metabolic power, metabolic cost of transport and mechanical efficiency. The aim of this study was to analyze the behavior of these variables during a real vertical kilometer field test. Fifteen trained trail runners, eleven men (from 22 to 38 years old) and four women (from 19 to 35 years old) performed a vertical kilometer with a length of 4.64 km and 835 m positive slope. During the entire race, the runners were equipped with portable gas analyzers (Cosmed K5) to assess their cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses breath by breath. Significant differences were found between top-level runners versus low-level runners in the mean values of the variables of mechanical power, metabolic power and velocity. A repeated-measures ANOVA showed significant differences between the sections, the incline and the interactions between all the analyzed variables, in addition to differences depending on the level of the runner. The variable of mechanical power can be statistically significantly predicted from metabolic power and vertical net metabolic COT. An algebraic expression was obtained to calculate the value of metabolic power. Integrating the variables of mechanical power, vertical velocity and metabolic power into phone apps and smartwatches is a new opportunity to improve performance monitoring in trail running.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fluid loss during prolonged exercise in hot conditions poses thermoregulatory and cardiovascular challenges for athletes that can lead to impaired performance. Pre-exercise hyperhydration using nutritional aids is a strategy that may prevent or delay the adverse effects of dehydration and attenuate the impact of heat stress on exercise performance. OBJECTIVES The aim of this systematic review was to examine the current literature to determine the effect of pre-exercise hyperhydration on performance, key physiological responses and gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS English language, full-text articles that compared the intervention with a baseline or placebo condition were included. An electronic search of Medline Complete, SPORTDiscus and Embase were used to identify articles with the final search conducted on 11 October 2022. Studies were assessed using the American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist. RESULTS Thirty-eight studies involving 403 participants (n = 361 males) were included in this review (n = 22 assessed exercise performance or capacity). Two studies reported an improvement in time-trial performance (range 5.7-11.4%), three studies reported an improvement in total work completed (kJ) (range 4-5%) and five studies reported an increase in exercise capacity (range 14.3-26.2%). During constant work rate exercise, nine studies observed a reduced mean heart rate (range 3-11 beats min-1), and eight studies reported a reduced mean core temperature (range 0.1-0.8 °C). Ten studies reported an increase in plasma volume (range 3.5-12.6%) compared with a control. Gastrointestinal symptoms were reported in 26 studies, with differences in severity potentially associated with factors within the ingestion protocol of each study (e.g. treatment, dose, ingestion rate). CONCLUSIONS Pre-exercise hyperhydration may improve exercise capacity during constant work rate exercise due to a reduced heart rate and core temperature, stemming from an acute increase in plasma volume. The combination of different osmotic aids (e.g. glycerol and sodium) may enhance fluid retention and this area should continue to be explored. Future research should utilise valid and reliable methods of assessing gastrointestinal symptoms. Furthermore, studies should investigate the effect of hyperhydration on different exercise modalities whilst implementing a strong level of blinding. Finally, females are vastly underrepresented, and this remains a key area of interest in this area.

J Strength Cond Res 37(11): 2260-2266, 2023-A new footwear regulation based on limiting the stack height (i.e., amount of material between the feet and the ground) has been established by World Athletics to ensure that performance is achieved through the primacy of human effort over technology in running shoes. Analyzing the effect of legal and illegal shoes on running performance is therefore needed to determine its effectiveness. Thus, this study aimed (a) to compare the effect of 2 footwear models categorized as legal and illegal by the World Athletics regulation on track running performance and (b) to analyze the derived metrics of the athletes' biomechanics when using each footwear model at racing paces. Within 1 week, 14 highly trained athletes performed 2 testing sessions composed of 2 time trials of 9- and 3-minute duration with 30 minutes of recovery between them. The athletes wore the "Nike ZoomX Dragonfly" track spikes model and the "Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next % 2" marathon shoe model in a counterbalanced randomized order. The results revealed that (a) there was only a small worthwhile improvement in the 3-minute time trial when using the marathon shoes of 0.97% (-0.04 to 1.98%) and (b) there was a main effect of footwear in 7 of the 9 biomechanical variables analyzed (p ≤ 0.050). The ground contact time was the unique performance predictor (p = 0.005, adjusted R2 = 0.476). Altogether, the use of legal and illegal running shoes altered the runners form, which only influenced the mid-distance performance.

Abstract
Anthropometric parameters are crucial prerequisite to achieve success in professional running sports. However, it is not clear how these parameters are relevant for athletes performing on a less demanding sport level as academic competitions. To help coaches and selectors working on this level, we have explored anthropometric variables and body composition in 68 academic athletes: 26 sprinters, 22 middle distance runners, and 20 long distance runners. Sprinters have a more massive body shape, shorter lower legs in relation to the length of the thigh, broader shoulders and narrower hips, greater musculature and cellular mass. A slender figure, a longer shin, and the greatest subcutaneous fat and extracellular mass characterize long-distance runners. Middle-distance runners are the slimmest, and have a narrow trunk and little subcutaneous fat. Sprinters and long-distance runners are mesomorphic, while middle-distance runners present more mixed mesomorph-ectomorph type. The principal component analysis highlighted the importance of the overall size of the body, limbs musculature and the length of the lower limb together with its segments, and also body fatness. This approach emphasized the morphological distinctiveness of runners at particular distances and allows the use of somatic features as predictors of running performance.

Abstract
Completing selected training sessions with reduced glycogen availability is associated with greater signalling and improved muscle oxidative capacity, although it may impact the overall quality of the session. We examined the effects of low carbohydrate availability on high intensity exercise performance, running economy, critical speed, and substrate metabolism. On two occasions, nine male runners (V̇O2peak 60.3 ± 3.3 mL.kg-1.min-1) completed a glycogen depletion protocol involving 90-min at 75%vV̇O2peak followed by 10 × 1-min at 110% vV̇O2peak. This was followed either by high (HIGH) or low (LOW) carbohydrate intake (>6 g.kg-1.day-1 and <50 g.day-1, respectively) until completion of a performance protocol on day 2 consisting of a series of time-trials (TT) (50m to 3000m) and physiological assessments. There were no differences between LOW and HIGH for any TT distance (mean TT performance times for LOW and HIGH were: 3000m TT 651.7 ± 52.8s and 646.4 ± 52.5s, 1500 m TT 304.0 ± 20.2s and 304.2 ± 22.1s, 400 m TT 67.64 ± 4.2s and 67.3 ± 3.8s, 50 m TT 7.27 ± 0.44s and 7.25 ± 0.45s, respectively, P > 0.05), though some athletes performed better in LOW (n = 5). While fat oxidation in LOW was significantly greater than HIGH (Δ0.32 ± 0.14 g.min-1; P < 0.001 at 14 km.h-1 and Δ0.34 ± 0.12 g.min-1 at 16 km.h-1; P < 0.01), running economy did not differ between trials (P > 0.05). Acute manipulation of carbohydrate availability showed immediate effects on substrate metabolism evidenced by greater fat oxidation without changes in RE. Acute low carbohydrate availability did not affect high intensity running performance across a range of distances.Highlights Acute manipulation of muscle glycogen availability using an exercise and dietary manipulation protocol did not affect subsequent high intensity running performance across a range of running distances.Reduced muscle glycogen resulted in a marked increase in fat oxidation in low glycogen condition but no changes in running economy or critical speed.Individual factors should be considered when prescribing high intensity sessions with restricted carbohydrate availability.

Abstract
Research assessing exercise-induced hypohydration on running performance in a temperate environment is scarce. Given the weight-bearing nature of running, the negative effects of hypohydration might be offset by the weight-loss associated with a negative fluid balance. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of exercise-induced hypohydration on running performance in temperate conditions. Seventeen intermittent games players (age 22 ± 1 y; VO2peak 52.5 ± 4.1 mL∙kg-1∙min-1) completed preliminary and familiarisation trials, and two experimental trials consisting of 12 blocks of 6 min of running (65% VO2peak; preload) with 1 min passive rest in-between, followed by a 3 km time trial (TT). During the preload, subjects consumed minimal fluid (60 mL) to induce hypohydration (HYP) or water to replace 95% sweat losses (1622 ± 343 mL; EUH). Body mass loss (EUH -0.5 ± 0.3%; HYP -2.2 ± 0.4%; P < 0.001), and other changes indicative of hypohydration, including increased serum osmolality, heart rate, thirst sensation, and decreased plasma volume (P ≤ 0.022), were apparent in HYP by the end of the preload. TT performance was ~6% slower in HYP (EUH 900 ± 87 s; HYP 955 ± 110 s; P < 0.001). Exercise-induced hypohydration of ~2% body mass impaired 3 km running TT performance in a temperate environment.

Abstract
Several reports have suggested that the risk of exertional heat illness (EHI) in Thoroughbred racehorses increases in high ambient temperatures. Heat dissipation in horses during exercise becomes less efficient when the body temperature and ambient temperature are close. Therefore, we hypothesised that exercise at 40 °C may increase body temperature, oxygen consumption, and cardiac output during incremental exercise tests compared to 20 and 30 °C. Six trained Thoroughbred horses were studied in a randomised, crossover design at three ambient temperatures with a 6-day washout period. Using a 3% inclined treadmill, horses performed incremental exercise tests at 1.7, 3.5, 6, 8, and 10 m/s for 90 s at ambient temperatures of 20, 30, and 40 °C. The effects of ambient temperature at 10 m/s on physiological variables were analysed using mixed models (P<0.05). Pulmonary arterial temperature and rectal temperature at 40 °C were higher than those at 20 °C (P<0.001) and 30 °C (P<0.001). Similarly, oxygen consumption (vs 20 °C, P=0.009; vs 30 °C, P=0.006) and cardiac output (vs 20 °C, P=0.001; vs 30 °C, P=0.001) at 40 °C were higher than those at 20 and 30 °C. Arterial O2 partial pressure, O2 saturation, and pH at 40 °C were lower than those at 20 and 30 °C. Arterial CO2 partial pressure at 40 °C was higher than that at 20 and 30 °C. No differences were observed in arterial-mixed venous O2 concentration difference (P=0.391) and plasma lactate concentration (P=0.134) at different ambient temperatures. These results indicate that exercise at 40 °C causes excessive high body temperature, decreased running economy, and increased cardiac output compared to exercise at 20 and 30 °C. We strongly suggest that trainers and veterinarians should anticipate the occurrence of increased thermal stresses when ambient temperature is extremely high even in dry conditions and prepare to mitigate the risk of EHI from the perspective of equine welfare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Advanced footwear technology improves average running economy compared with racing flats in sub-elite athletes. However, not all athletes benefit as performance changes vary from a 10% drawback to a 14% improvement. The main beneficiaries from such technologies, world-class athletes, have only been analyzed using race times. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to measure running economy on a laboratory treadmill in advanced footwear technology compared to a traditional racing flat in world-class Kenyan (mean half-marathon time: 59:30 min:s) versus European amateur runners. METHODS Seven world-class Kenyan and seven amateur European male runners completed a maximal oxygen uptake assessment and submaximal steady-state running economy trials in three different models of advanced footwear technology and a racing flat. To confirm our results and better understand the overall effect of new technology in running shoes, we conducted a systematic search and meta-analysis. RESULTS Laboratory results revealed large variability in both world-class Kenyan road runners, which ranged from a 11.3% drawback to a 11.4% benefit, and amateur Europeans, which ranged from a 9.7% benefit to a 1.1% drawback in running economy of advanced footwear technology compared to a flat. The post-hoc meta-analysis revealed an overall significant medium benefit of advanced footwear technology on running economy compared with traditional flats. CONCLUSIONS Variability of advanced footwear technology performance appears in both world-class and amateur runners, suggesting further testing should examine such variability to ensure validity of results and explain the cause as a more personalized approach to shoe selection might be necessary for optimal benefit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-impact loads have been linked with running injuries. Fatigue has been proposed to increase impact loads, but this relationship has not been rigorously examined, including the associated role of muscle strength, power, and endurance. PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the effect of fatigue on impact loading in runners and the role of muscle function in mediating changes in impact loading with fatigue. METHODS Twenty-eight trained endurance runners performed a fixed-intensity time to exhaustion test at 85% of V̇O 2max . Tibial accelerations were measured using leg-mounted inertial measurement units and sampled every minute until volitional exhaustion. Tests of lower limb muscle strength, power, and endurance included maximal isometric strength (soleus, knee extensors, and knee flexors), single leg hop for distance, and the one leg rise test. Changes in peak tibial acceleration (PTA, g ) were compared between time points throughout the run (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Associations between the change in PTA and lower limb muscle function tests were assessed (Spearman's rho [ rs ]). RESULTS PTA increased over the duration of the fatiguing run. Compared with baseline (0%) (mean ± SD, 9.1 g ± 1.6 g ), there was a significant increase at 75% (9.9 g ± 1.7 g , P = 0.001) and 100% (10.1 g ± 1.8 g , P < 0.001), with no change at 25% (9.6 g ± 1.6 g , P = 0.142) or 50% (9.7 g ± 1.7 g , P = 0.053). Relationships between change in PTA and muscle function tests were weak and not statistically significant ( rs = -0.153 to 0.142, all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Peak axial tibial acceleration increased throughout a fixed-intensity run to exhaustion. The change in PTA was not related to performance in lower limb muscle function tests.

Abstract
Studies have reported that a stiff triceps surae muscle and tendon-aponeurosis and also a more compliant quadriceps muscle and tendon-aponeurosis, are related to lower oxygen cost during running. However, to date, no study has investigated in a single experiment how oxygen cost during running is related to the stiffness of the free tendons (Achilles tendon, patellar tendon) and all the superficial muscles of two major muscle groups for running (i.e., quadriceps, triceps surae). Thus, 17 male trained runners/triathletes participated in this study and visited the laboratory on three occasions. On the first day, the participants were familiarized with the tests. On the second day, the passive compression stiffness of the triceps surae muscle (i.e., gastrocnemii), Achilles tendon, quadriceps muscle (i.e., vastii, rectus femoris), and patellar tendon was non-invasively measured using a digital palpation device (MyotonPRO). In addition, an incremental test was applied to test the VO2max of the participants. Thereafter, in the third visit, after at least 48-h of rest, participants performed a 15-min run on the treadmill with a speed reflecting a velocity of 70% VO2max, to assess oxygen costs during running. The Spearman correlation showed a significant negative correlation between passive Achilles tendon compression stiffness and running oxygen consumption, with a large effect size (rρ = -0.52; CI (95%) -0.81 to -0.33; P = 0.03). Moreover, no further significant relationship between oxygen cost during running and the passive compression stiffness of the quadriceps muscle and patellar tendon, as well as the triceps surae muscle, was detected. The significant correlation indicates that a stiffer passive Achilles tendon can lead to a lower oxygen cost during running. Future studies will have to test the causality of this relationship with training methods such as strength training that are able to increase the Achilles tendon stiffness.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cost of locomotion (C L ) has been shown to increase after endurance running and cycling bouts. The main purpose of this study was to compare, in the same participants, the effect of both modalities on C L when matched for relative intensity and duration. METHODS Seventeen recreational athletes performed two incremental tests in running and cycling to determine the first ventilatory threshold then two 3-h bouts of exercise at 105% of threshold, with gas exchange measurements taken for 10 min at the start, middle and end of the 3 h to calculate C L . Neuromuscular fatigue during isometric knee extensor contractions and force-velocity profile on a cycle ergometer were assessed before and immediately after the 3-h trials. RESULTS C L significantly increased at mid (+3.7%, P = 0.006) and end (+7.4%, P < 0.001) of exercise for cycling compared with start, whereas it did not change with time for running. Cardio-respiratory and metabolic variables changed similarly for cycling and running, therefore not explaining the time-course differences in C L between modalities. Changes in C L during cycling correlated significantly with loss of maximal force extrapolated from the force-velocity profile ( r = 0.637, P = 0.006) and changes in cadence ( r = 0.784, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The type of locomotion influences the effects of exercise on energy cost because 3 h of exercise at the same relative intensity caused a significant increase of cycling C L , and no changes in running C L . The changes in C L in cycling are likely due, at least in part, to fatigue in the locomotor muscles.

Abstract
The aim of this four-armed parallel group randomized-controlled trial was to evaluate if plyometric training could have different effects on running performance and physiological adaptations depending on the training intensity distribution (TID) in an 8-week intervention in endurance athletes. Sixty well-trained male runners (age: 34 ± 6 years, relative ⩒O2peak : 69 ± 3 ml kg-1 min-1 ) were recruited and allocated to a pyramidal (PYR), pyramidal + plyometric training (PYR + PLY), polarized (POL), and polarized + plyometric training (POL + PLY) periodization. The periodization patterns were isolated manipulations of TID, while training load was kept constant. Participants were tested pre- and post-intervention for body mass, velocity at 2 and 4 mmol·L-1 of blood lactate concentration (vBLa2, vBLa4), absolute and relative ⩒O2peak and 5-km running time trial performance, counter movement jump and squat jump. There were significant group × time interactions for vBla4 (p = 0.0235), CMJ (p = 0.0234), SJ (p = 0.0168), and 5-km running time trial performance (p = 0.0035). Specifically, vBla4 and 5-km running time trial performance showed the largest post-intervention improvements in PYR + PLY (2.4% and 1.6%) and POL + PLY (2.1% and 1.8%), respectively. No significant interactions were observed for body mass, absolute and relative ⩒O2peak , peak heart rate, lactate peak and rating of perceived exertion. In conclusion, an 8-week training periodization seems to be effective in improving performance of well-trained endurance runners. Including plyometric training once a week appeared to be more efficacious in maximizing running performance improvements, independently from the TID adopted.

Abstract
Advancements in running shoe technology over the last 5 years have sparked controversy in athletics as linked with clear running economy and performance enhancements. Early debates mainly surrounded 'super shoes' in long-distance running, but more recently, the controversy has filtered through to sprint and middle-distance running with the emergence of 'super spikes'. This Current Concepts paper provides a brief overview on the controversial topic of super shoes and super spikes. The defining features of technologically advanced shoes are a stiff plate embedded within the midsole, curved plate and midsole geometry, and lightweight, resilient, high-energy returning foam that - in combination - enhance running performance. Since the launch of the first commercially available super shoe, all world records from the 5 km to the marathon have been broken by athletes wearing super shoes or super spikes, with a similar trend observed in middle-distance running. The improvements in super shoes are around 4% for running economy and 2% for performance, and speculatively around 1% to 1.5% for super spikes. These enhancements are believed multifactorial in nature and difficult to parse, although involve longitudinal bending stiffness, the 'teeter-totter effect', the high-energy return properties of the midsole material, enhanced stack height and lightweight characteristic of shoes.
