Abstract
Sleep is essential to maintaining health and wellbeing of individuals, influencing a variety of outcomes from mental health to cardiometabolic disease. This study aims to assess the relationships between various sleep phenotypes and blood metabolites. Utilizing data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, we performed association analyses between 40 sleep phenotypes, grouped in several domains (i.e., sleep disordered breathing (SDB), sleep duration, timing, insomnia symptoms, and heart rate during sleep), and 768 metabolites measured via untargeted metabolomics profiling. Network analysis was employed to visualize and interpret the associations between sleep phenotypes and metabolites. The patterns of statistically significant associations between sleep phenotypes and metabolites differed by superpathways, and highlighted subpathways of interest for future studies. For example, some xenobiotic metabolites were associated with sleep duration and heart rate phenotypes (e.g. 1H-indole-7-acetic acid, 4-allylphenol sulfate), while ketone bodies and fatty acid metabolism metabolites were associated with sleep timing measures (e.g. 3-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), 3-hydroxyhexanoylcarnitine (1)). Heart rate phenotypes had the overall largest number of detected metabolite associations. Many of these associations were shared with both SDB and with sleep timing phenotypes, while SDB phenotypes shared relatively few metabolite associations with sleep duration measures. A number of metabolites were associated with multiple sleep phenotypes, from a few domains. The amino acids vanillylmandelate (VMA) and 1-carboxyethylisoleucine were associated with the greatest number of sleep phenotypes, from all domains other than insomnia. This atlas of sleep-metabolite associations will facilitate hypothesis generation and further study of the metabolic underpinnings of sleep health.

Abstract
Background Primary insomnia (PI) refers to syndromes of difficulty falling asleep, poor sleep quality, early awakening, and difficulty falling asleep after waking up. Although there have been numerous studies, the specific etiology and pathogenesis of PI are still misunderstanding. In recent years, the gut microbiota has been proved to be involved in the metabolism of many mental disorders. But the specific mechanisms of its involvement in PI have not been fully elucidated. This study aims to explore the relationship between the gut microbiota and the symptoms, cognitive function changes in PI. Methods In this study, the gut microbiota of PI patients and healthy controls was profiled by performing stool 16s rRNA gene sequencing. The co-occurrence network was constructed by using Weight Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) algorithm. The correlation between gut microbiota associated pathways and traits in PI were predicted. Results WGCNA results demonstrated several Operational Taxonomic Units (OTU) modules are correlated to symptoms. By using PICRUSt2 software, we predicted the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways of microbiota in modules. For instance, sleep efficiency may be correlated with the presence of Insulin signaling pathway, Flavonoid biosynthesis, Ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, Nitrotoluene degradation, Biotin metabolism, RNA polymerase and Chlorocyclohexane and chlorobenzene degradation. Total sleep time may be correlated with the presence of Tyrosine metabolism, Propanoate metabolism, Carbon fixation pathways in prokaryotes, Carotenoid biosynthesis, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Nitrotoluene degradation and Biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids. The severity of insomnia may be correlated with Insulin signaling pathway, Flavonoid biosynthesis, Ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, Nitrotoluene degradation, Biotin metabolism and RNA polymerase. Change of name score in Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) may be correlated with Tyrosine metabolism, Propanoate metabolism, Carbon fixation pathways in prokaryotes, Carotenoid biosynthesis, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Nitrotoluene degradation, Biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, Apoptosis, Steroid hormone biosynthesis, Geraniol degradation, Protein digestion and absorption and Bisphenol degradation in Gut Microbiota (GM). Conclusion This study revealed the potential relationships between gut microbiota and PI. By using pathway prediction and enrichment analysis, we concluded many metabolic pathways may associated with some important traits of insomnia patients, including sleep efficiency, severe insomnia, total sleep time and change of name score in MoCA. The metabolic pathways include Insulin signaling pathway, Flavonoid biosynthesis, Ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, Nitrotoluene degradation, Biotin metabolism, RNA polymerase and Chlorocyclohexane, chlorobenzene degradation, Tyrosine metabolism, Propanoate metabolism, Carbon fixation pathways in prokaryotes, Carotenoid biosynthesis, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, Apoptosis, Steroid hormone biosynthesis, Geraniol degradation, Protein digestion and absorption and Bisphenol degradation.Our study demonstrated that PI patients demonstrate significant changes in gut microbiota, which will help delineate the relationship between gut microbiota and syndromes of PI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-quality sleep and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can result in series of chronic diseases. Healthy diet has been considered as an effective and simple strategy to optimize sleep quality. However, current evidence on the correlation of dietary composite antioxidant intake with sleep health remained obscure. AIM OF THE STUDY To determine the relationship of composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and sleep health. METHODS Cross-sectional analyses were based on National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008. Dietary consumption was assessed by trained staff using 24-h diet recall method and CDAI was calculated based on previous validated approach that included six antioxidants. Sleep-related outcomes were self-reported by a set of questionnaires and classified into OSA, day sleepiness, and insufficient sleep. Weighted logistic regression was conducted to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Restricted cubic spline (RCS) regressions were also used to evaluate the dose-response of CDAI and three sleep-related outcomes. RESULTS A total of 7274 subjects included (mean age: 46.97 years) were enrolled in our study, including 3658 were females (52.54%) and 3616 were males (47.46%). Of them, 70.6%, 29.51%, and 35.57% of the subjects reported that they had OSA, day sleepiness and insufficient sleep, respectively. Logistic regression showed the highest quartile of CDAI was inversely associated with the risk of OSA (OR: 0.69, 95%CI: 0.49-0.97), day sleepiness (OR: 0.64, 95%CI: 0.44-0.94) and insufficient sleep (OR: 0.68, 95%CI: 0.50-0.92) compared with the lowest quartile. RCS showed linear relationship of CDAI and insufficient sleep but non-linear relationship of CDAI with OSA and day sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS Our results show that CDAI was non-linearly associated with lower risk of OSA and day sleepiness whereas a linear inverse association between CDAI and insufficient sleep was observed. These findings implicate that combined intake of antioxidants could be a promising and effective approach to optimize sleep quality for public.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between dietary carotenoid intake and sleep duration. METHODS Adults enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018 without missing information on dietary carotenoid intake (α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and lutein + zeaxanthin), sleep duration, and covariates were included. Participants' carotenoid consumption was divided into three groups by quartiles and sleep duration was grouped as short (< 7 h/night), optimal (7-8 h/night), and long (> 8 h/night). Multinominal logistic regression was constructed to examine the association between dietary carotenoid intake and sleep duration. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression was further utilized to explore their dose-response relationship. The weighted quantile sum (WQS) model was adopted to calculate the mixed and individual effect of 5 carotenoid sub-types on sleep duration. RESULTS Multinominal logistic regression presented that people with higher intakes of α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and lutein + zeaxanthin were less likely to sleep too short or too long. Consistent with the findings from multinominal logistic regression, the RCS models suggested a reverse U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and carotenoid intakes. The mixed effects were also significant, where β-cryptoxanthin and lutein + zeaxanthin were the top 2 contributors associated with the decreased risks of short sleep duration, while β-carotene, α-carotene, and β-cryptoxanthin were the main factors related to the lower risk of long sleep duration. CONCLUSION Our study revealed that the American adults with optimal sleep duration were associated with more dietary carotenoid intake, in comparison to short or long sleepers.

Abstract
Introduction B vitamins help generate energy within cells. A significant portion of populations in developed countries suffer a deficiency in one or more B vitamins. This study assesses the use of vitamin B supplements and their effects. Methodology This cross-sectional study was conducted using public participants in Saudi Arabia. Participants from all over Saudi Arabia were recruited through self-conducted surveys to study the effects of using vitamin B supplements on appetite, BMI, energy, and sleep, and to identify any side effects in participants. Inclusion criteria included age (18 years or older) and use of vitamin B supplements. Children, pregnant women, adults who had never used vitamin B, and those not willing to participate in the study were excluded. Results In total, 1,521 adults were recruited. Most of the participants were young Saudi Females. While taking vitamin B supplements, a minority of participants complained of mild gastrointestinal upset, but a significant proportion experienced no side effects. In this study, a significant proportion of participants experienced an increase in appetite, which was associated with a significant increase in BMI after taking vitamin B supplements. This study also explored increases in energy, which were significant and associated with significant increases in sleeping time. Male participants in the present study noticed a significant increase in erectile dysfunction (ED). Conclusions This study found significant effects of vitamin B supplements on BMI, appetite, energy, and sleep, as well as an increase in ED in male participants. More studies are needed to further explore these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related fatigue is difficult to treat, and dietary interventions are promising yet underused. OBJECTIVE We explored associations between dietary patterns and fatigue, and the effect of a dietary intervention versus control on fatigue using Women's Healthy Eating and Living study data, plus mediators and moderators of the intervention effect. METHODS The Women's Healthy Eating and Living study was a randomized controlled trial among early-stage breast cancer survivors. The 4-year intervention encouraged fruits, vegetables, fiber, and 15% to 20% calories from fat. Fatigue outcomes included a 9-item energy scale and a single-item tiredness question. Dietary quality was estimated using a modified Healthy Eating Index (24-hour dietary recall) and serum carotenoid concentrations. Nutrient timing was obtained from 4-day food logs. RESULTS Among 2914 total participants, lower body mass index was associated with less tiredness and more energy at baseline (P < .001 for both). Earlier start and end times for daily eating windows were associated with less tiredness (P = .014 and P = .027, respectively) and greater energy (P = .006 and P = .102, respectively). The intervention did not lead to improvements in fatigue on average (P > .125). However, the intervention was more effective for participants who were younger, had fewer comorbidities, and did not have radiation treatment. Mediators included increases in serum carotenoids, increases in the modified Healthy Eating Index, and weight loss/maintenance. CONCLUSION Diet quality and earlier eating windows were associated with less fatigue. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Programs that encourage high diet quality and a morning meal and discourage nighttime eating should be tested for efficacy in reducing cancer-related fatigue in survivorship.

Abstract
Introduction Introduction: the interaction between immunity and nutrition is complex and multifaceted. Micronutrients, including vitamins and minerals, are essential for immune function. In turn, immune function and lifestyle habits can affect nutritional needs and micronutrient utilization, creating an interdependence between nutrition and immunity that can be modulated by both external and internal factors. Objectives: to examine the relationship between micronutrient intake and immune function, and how debilitating factors such as aging, disease, and stress can impact this relationship. Methods: a review of scientific evidence and recommendations from major international scientific societies was conducted to identify the importance of micronutrients in immune function and how debilitating factors can alter their impact. Results: the effect of different micronutrients on immune function is described. Debilitating factors like aging, stress, and chronic diseases can compromise the immune system and make the body more susceptible to infections. However, adequate intake of micronutrients and healthy habits can help to strengthen immunity and mitigate the effects of these debilitating factors. Conclusion: immunonutrition is a critical component for maintaining a strong and healthy immune system. Sufficient intake of micronutrients and healthy lifestyle habits can help improve immunity, especially in the presence of debilitating factors.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation, which is a decrease in duration and quality of sleep, is a common problem in today's life. Epidemiological and interventional investigations have suggested a link between sleep deprivation and overweight/obesity. Sleep deprivation affects homeostatic and non-homoeostatic regulation of appetite, with the food reward system playing a dominant role. Factors such as sex and weight status affect this regulation; men and individuals with excess weight seem to be more sensitive to reward-driven and hedonistic regulation of food intake. Sleep deprivation may also affect weight through affecting physical activity and energy expenditure. In addition, sleep deprivation influences food selection and eating behaviours, which are mainly managed by the food reward system. Sleep-deprived individuals mostly crave for palatable energy-dense foods and have low desire for fruit and vegetables. Consumption of meals may not change but energy intake from snacks increases. The individuals have more desire for snacks with high sugar and saturated fat content. The relationship between sleep and the diet is mutual, implying that diet and eating behaviours also affect sleep duration and quality. Consuming healthy diets containing fruit and vegetables and food sources of protein and unsaturated fats and low quantities of saturated fat and sugar may be used as a diet strategy to improve sleep. Since the effects of sleep deficiency differ between animals and humans, only evidence from human subject studies has been included, controversies are discussed and the need for future investigations is highlighted.

Abstract
Objective The present study aimed to explore the correlation of serum total folic acid concentration with severe difficulty falling asleep among US adults. Methods Cross-sectional data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2006 and 2007 to 2008 cycles. Participants were divided into the severe difficulty falling asleep (SDFA) group and the control group according to the monthly frequency of having difficulty falling asleep. Serum total folic acid was taken as independent and dependent variables, respectively. The correlation of serum total folic acid concentration with severe difficulty falling asleep was examined using multivariable logistic regression models, where the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidential intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results Overall, 8,926 individuals from the NHANES 2005 to 2006 and 2007 to 2008 waves were included in the analysis, of whom 683 participants had severe difficulty falling asleep. Higher serum total folic acid concentration (ng/ml) was associated with lower odds of severe difficulty falling asleep after adjusting for potentially confounding factors (OR = 0.98; 95% CI: 0.97-1.00), while participants at the highest quartile had the least odds of severe difficulty falling asleep (OR = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.40-0.74). The subgroup analysis based on gender, smoking history, and diabetes showed that this negative correlation was more significant in males, smokers, and nondiabetic population after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion High levels of serum folic acid were significantly related to less odds of severe difficulty in falling asleep among US adults, suggesting that folic acid supplementation may be beneficial to the prevention and even treatment of severe difficulty falling asleep.

Abstract
Based on nationally representative samples from US, we aimed to assess the associations of vitamins with hearing loss, vision disorder and sleep problem. A total of 25,312, 8425 and 24,234 participants were included in this study to investigate the relationship of vitamins with hearing loss, vision disorder and sleep problem from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, respectively. Vitamins including niacin, folic acid, vitamin B6, A, C, E and carotenoids were considered in our study. Logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between all included dietary vitamin intake concentrations and the prevalence of specific outcomes. Increased lycopene (odds ratio [OR]: 0.904, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.829-0.985) intake was associated with a deceased prevalence of hearing loss. Higher dietary intake of folic acid (OR: 0.637, 95% CI: 0.443-0.904), vitamin B6 (0.667, 0.465-0.947), alpha-carotene (0.695, 0.494-0.968), beta-carotene (0.703, 0.505-0.969) and lutein + zeaxanthin (0.640, 0.455-0.892) were associated with a decreased prevalence of vision disorder. The inversely associations of sleeping problem with niacin (OR: 0.902, 95% CI: 0.826-0.985), folic acid (0.882, 0.811-0.959), vitamin B6 (0.892, 0.818-0.973), vitamin C (0.908, 0.835-0.987), vitamin E (0.885, 0.813-0.963) and lycopene (0.919, 0.845-0.998) were also observed. Our findings provide evidence that increased specific vitamin intake is associated with decreased prevalence of hearing loss, vision disorder and sleep problem.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the association of vitamin D with sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic and the influence of daily sunlight on this association. METHODS This cross-sectional, population-based study among adults stratified by multistage probability cluster sampling was conducted from October to December 2020 in the Iron Quadrangle region of Brazil. The outcome was sleep quality, evaluated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) concentrations were determined by indirect electrochemiluminescence and a deficiency was classified as 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL. To assess sunlight, the average daily sunlight exposure was calculated and was classified as insufficient when less than 30 min/d. Multivariate logistic analysis was used to estimate the association between vitamin D and sleep quality. A directed acyclic graph was used to select minimal and sufficient sets of adjustment variables for confounding from the backdoor criterion. RESULTS In a total of 1709 individuals evaluated, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 19.8% (95% CI, 15.5-24.9%), and the prevalence of poor sleep quality was 52.5% (95% CI, 48.6-56.4%). In multivariate analysis, vitamin D was not associated with poor sleep quality in individuals with sufficient sunlight. Moreover, in individuals with insufficient sunlight, vitamin D deficiency was associated with poor sleep quality (odds ratio [OR], 2.02; 95% CI, 1.10-3.71). Furthermore, each 1-ng/mL increase in vitamin D levels reduced the chance of poor sleep quality by 4.2% (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.92-0.99). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency was associated with poor sleep quality in individuals with insufficient exposure to sunlight.

Abstract
The associations of sleep duration and midday napping with homocysteine (Hcy) levels, and whether these sleep behaviors modify the association between genetic predisposition and Hcy levels, has yet to be investigated. We included 19,426 participants without severe health conditions at baseline from the Dongfeng−Tongji cohort. In a subgroup of 15,126 participants with genetic data, a genetic risk score (GRS) based on 18 Hcy-related loci was constructed to test the gene−sleep interactions in Hcy. Hcy levels were higher in subjects with a long sleep duration (≥9 h) and midday napping (>90 min), as compared to those who reported a moderate sleep duration (7 to <8 h) and midday napping (1−30 min) (all p values < 0.05). A long sleep duration and midday napping showed a joint effect in increasing Hcy (p for trend < 0.001). Significant interactions regarding Hcy levels were observed for a long sleep duration with GRS and MTHFR rs1801133, and long midday napping with DPEP1 rs12921383 (all p values for interaction < 0.05). Overall findings indicated that a long sleep duration and midday napping were associated with elevated serum Hcy levels, independently and jointly, and amplified the genetic susceptibility to higher Hcy.

Abstract
Vitamin A is essential for brain function, in addition to its important roles in vision, immunity, and reproduction. Previous studies have shown that retinoic acid (RA), the bioactive form of vitamin A, is involved in the regulation of various intracellular responses related to biological rhythms. RA is reported to affect the circadian rhythm by binding to RA receptors, such as receptors in the circadian feedback loops in the mammalian suprachiasmatic nucleus. However, evidence of the impacts of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) on biological rhythms is limited, and most of the related studies were conducted on animals. In this review, we described the physiological functions of biological rhythms and physiological pathways/molecular mechanisms regulating the biological rhythms. We then discussed the current understanding of the associations of VAD with biological rhythm disorders/diseases (sleep disorders, impairments in learning/memory, emotional disorders, and other immune or metabolism diseases) and summarized the currently proposed mechanisms (mainly by retinoid nuclear receptors and related proteins) for the associations. This review may help recognize the role of VAD in biological rhythm disorders and stimulate clinical or epidemiological studies to confirm the findings of related animal studies.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the relation between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (s-25(OH)D) and subjective sleep measures in an Arctic population (69°N). Methods Cross-sectional data was collected from 21,083 individuals (aged ≥40 years) participating in the population based Tromsø Study: Tromsø7 (2015–2016). The present study included 20,438 participants, after having excluded respondents missing data on s-25(OH)D (n = 161) and/or subjective sleep measures (including sleep duration, insomnia, and daytime sleepiness)(n = 490). Based on s-25(OH)D (assessed using LC-MS/MS), participants were grouped as deficient (<30 nmol/L), insufficient (30–49.9 nmol/L), sufficient (50–75 nmol/L), or high (>75 nmol/L). Sleep duration was grouped as inadequate (ISD) if < 7 or ≥9 h. Linear and logistic regression were used to calculate unstandardized β-values and odds ratios [95% confidence intervals]. The analyses were adjusted for season, age, BMI, lifestyle factors and relevant comorbidities. Results In both men and women, s-25(OH)D was positively associated with sleep duration, and compared to the sufficient s-25(OH)D group, the insufficient s-25(OH)D group reported significantly shorter sleep duration in both sexes. There was an increased odds of ISD in both men and women but adjusted for confounding factors this was only significant in women (1.16 [1.03, 1.32], p = .017). In men, there were no significant associations between s-25(OH)D and the remaining sleep measures. Women in the high s-25(OH)D group had lower ESS-scores (−0.28 [-0.47, −0.08], p = .006), but higher odds of insomnia (1.16 [1.01, 1.33], p = .036) compared to women in the sufficient group. Conclusions In this Arctic population, a tenuous association was found between s-25(OH)D and subjective sleep measures, predominantly in women. 25(OH)D was associated with self-reported sleep measures in this Arctic population. 25(OH)D was positively associated with self-reported sleep duration in both sexes. Women with sufficient 25(OH)D had lower odds of insomnia. RCTs are needed to determine the role of vitamin D in sleep health.

Abstract
BackgroundPoor sleep quality and vitamin D deficiency are common in stroke patients. Our aim was to evaluate the possible association between vitamin D and sleep quality in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients.MethodsA total of 301 AIS patients were screened and completed 1-month follow-up. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was used to assess the vitamin D status by a competitive protein-binding assay at baseline. All patients were divided into equal quartile according to the distribution of 25(OH)D. One month after stroke, sleep quality was evaluated by using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire; depression status was confirmed by 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD).ResultsThere were 89 (29.6%) AIS patients with poor sleep quality 1-month post-event. Within 24 h after admission, serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in patients with poor sleep quality after stroke (P < 0.001). In the results of multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio (OR) of poor sleep quality was 6.199 (95% CI, 2.066–18.600) for the lowest quartile of 25(OH)D compared with the highest quartile. In patients without depression, reduced 25(OH)D were still significantly associated with poor sleep quality (OR = 8.174, 95% CI = 2.432–27.473). Furthermore, 25(OH)D and HAMD score were combined to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of poor sleep quality, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.775.ConclusionReduced serum levels of vitamin D at admission were independently and significantly associated with poor sleep quality at 1 month after stroke. Our findings suggested the combination of vitamin D and depression status could provide important predictive information for post-stroke sleep quality.

Abstract
Background: Poor sleep quality is a common problem in the general population that affects the quality of life of individuals. Aim: This systematic review aimed to determine the effect of vitamin D on sleep quality (primary outcome) and side effects (secondary outcome). Methods: A systematic search was performed using Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Sciences, Scopus, Google Scholar, SID, and Magiran databases with no limit at the time of publication. Cochrane collaboration instrument was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. RevMan software was used for meta-analysis. Mean Difference was calculated due to the same sleep quality measurement tools in all studies. Heterogeneity of studies was assessed using I-squared (I2). Due to high heterogeneity (I2 > 75%), Random Effect was used instead of Fixed Effect. Results: Out of a total of 1637 titles and abstracts found, after removing duplicate items (23 items), 1596 items were removed due to irrelevance and lack of inclusion criteria. 18 articles were fully studied due to insufficient abstract information and finally, 5 articles were entered into systematic review and meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the use of vitamin D supplementation significantly improves sleep quality (MD: -1.32; 95%CI: -2.55 to -0.09; P = 0.04). Conclusions: Also, according to the findings of this study, receiving vitamin D supplementation did not cause any side effects. According to the results of this review study, sleep quality in people receiving vitamin D significantly improved compared to the control group.

Abstract
Chronotype is the attitude of subjects to carry out their daily activities mainly in the morning ("lark") or in the evening ("owl"). The intermediate chronotype is located between these two categories. It has been demonstrated that chronotype can influence the incidence, course and response to treatments of tumors. In particular patients diagnosed with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) and evening chronotype are characterized by unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, metabolic syndrome, a worsen cardiometabolic profile, a poor prognosis with a progressive disease and the development of metastasis. In addition, evening chronotype has been associated with sleep disturbances, which in turn have been related to tumor development and progression of tumors. There is a strict connection between sleep disturbances and NENs because of the hyperactivation of proangiogenic factors that caused aberrant neoangiogenesis. A nutritional tailored approach could represent a tool to align subjects with evening chronotype to physiological biological rhythms based on the properties of some macro and micronutrients of being substrate for melatonin synthesis. Thus, we aimed to provide an overview on the association of chronotype categories and sleep disturbances with NENs and to provide nutritional advices to manage subjects with NENs and these disturbances of circadian rhythm.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between chronotype, sleep problems and serum levels of GABA (gamma amminobutyric acid), glutamate and homocysteine in children and adolescents diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as factors affecting this relationship. Sleep problems of 46 children and adolescents aged 7-18 years diagnosed with ADHD and 30 healthy volunteers aged 7-18 years were evaluated with Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) while chronotypes were evaluated with Children's Chronotype Questionnaire (CCQ). Serum glutamate, GABA and homocysteine levels were measured using immunosorbent test (ELISA) kits. Sleep problems were significantly more common in the ADHD group compared to the control group (p < .001). Serum GABA, glutamate and homocysteine levels were found to be predictor biomarkers for ADHD, independent of total sleep problem score. When the homocysteine levels were above the cut-off point of 9.445 µmol/L, the sensitivity in early diagnosis of ADHD was 84.8% and the specificity was 70.0%. Although ADHD is a disorder in which sleep problems are common, increased serum GABA, glutamate and homocysteine are important in diagnosing ADHD independent of ADHD-related sleep problems. Homocysteine levels may be an important predictor for the presence of ADHD.

Abstract
Cancer-related fatigue is a prevalent, debilitating condition, and preliminary evidence suggests a relationship between higher diet quality and lower fatigue. Serum-based carotenoids, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E are biomarkers of fruit and vegetable intake and therefore diet quality. To further elucidate the link between diet quality and cancer-related fatigue, associations were assessed between these serum-based nutrients and fatigue among American adults with special attention to cancer history. Data were analyzed from the United States 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset. Ten carotenoids, vitamin A, vitamin E, and γ-tocopherol were measured from fasting blood samples and fatigue was patient-reported. Associations between carotenoid concentration and fatigue were estimated using ordinal logistic regression models. Adjusted models included a diagnosis of cancer (with the exception on non-melanoma skin cancer, yes/no), age, body mass index, race/ethnicity, education, and exercise habits as covariates, and additional models included a cancer×nutrient interaction. Of 4091 participants, 272 (8.0%) reported a history of cancer. Greater fatigue was associated with lower serum trans-lycopene, retinyl palmitate, and retinyl stearate (all p<0.05) in separate models adjusting for potential confounders. For these nutrients, a one-standard deviation increase in nutrient was associated with a 6.8-9.9% lower risk of greater fatigue. Among cancer survivors only (n=272), statistically significant associations were not observed between any of the nutrients and fatigue. In conclusion, greater serum concentrations of carotenoid biomarkers were associated with less fatigue. These results support further exploration into relationships between carotenoid intake, diet quality, and persistent fatigue.

Abstract
Background This study examined the effect of vitamin B12 supplementation on sleep parameters of latency, total sleep time, wake-after-sleep onset, total time in bed and sleep efficiency in healthy adults. Methods This quasi-experimental pre-test, post-test design recruited adults 25–50 years old, with normal vitamin B12 levels. Sleep parameters were assessed using Phillips Respironics Actiwatch-2® on non-dominant wrist from Monday to Thursday for four weeks. Pre-supplementation data was collected for the first two weeks; then participants started 3mg pre-packaged cyanocobalamin supplements daily for 14 days. Post-supplementation data was collected for weeks three and four. Serum was collected by venipuncture at the beginning and end of the study for vitamin B12 assay. Descriptive statistics involved median and interquartile range [IQR]. A comparison of the sleep parameters before and after cyanocobalamin supplementation was done using non-parametric inferential analysis. Results Fourteen healthy adult participants completed the study; nine females and five males with median age of 37[17] years and a normal range of serum vitamin B12 level (169–695 pmol/L). Median serum vitamin B12 level was significantly elevated following supplementation (355[217] to 961[679]) pmol/L; p = 0.020); but there was no change in any of the sleep parameters measured. Spearman's rho correlation analysis showed no correlation between serum vitamin B12 levels and the sleep parameters for pre-supplementation and post-supplementation weeks. Conclusion Two weeks of cyanocobalamin supplementation (3mg/day) resulted in the expected increase in serum vitamin B12 levels in healthy adults but did not influence their sleep wake activity.

Abstract
Background/objectives Insomnia is highly prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study therefore evaluated the associations between various micronutrients and insomnia in patients with T2DM. Subjects/methods Between January 2018 and December 2020, a total of 418 T2DM patients with or without insomnia were recruited. Clinical and biochemical parameters, as well as micronutrient levels, were measured in each participant. Insomnia and sleep quality were assessed using the Athens Insomnia Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, respectively. Results Insomnia was found in 24.16% of patients with T2DM. Compared with T2DM patients without insomnia, patients with insomnia had significantly higher levels of vitamin B12 (VitB12). Increased VitB12 was an independent risk factor for insomnia (OR 1.61 [1.06–2.45], P = 0.03). A cut-off value of 517.50 pg/ml VitB12 (P = 0.01, AUC 0.61, standard error 0.04) predicted insomnia risk. Moreover, increased VitB12 levels in patients with insomnia were closely correlated with the use of mecobalamin. Conclusions This study suggests that elevated serum VitB12 level is independently associated with the incidence of insomnia and predicts increased insomnia risk in Chinese patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D has been linked to sleep health in observational studies. Data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with vitamin D is scarce. Methods This study presents the results of a secondary analysis of 189 vitamin D insufficient participants (47.1% women) in a previously performed RCT, of which 92 were randomized to vitamin D (100,000 IU (2500 μg) as a bolus dose followed by 20,000 IU (500 μg) per week), and 97 to placebo. At baseline and after 4 months at the end of the study serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (s-25(OH)D) was measured, and the study questionnaire assessing sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, and symptoms of insomnia, was completed. Results At baseline, mean s-25(OH)D was 35.0 ± 11.8 and 35.5 ± 13.3 nmol/L in the vitamin D and placebo groups, respectively. After four months, we found no statistically significant differences between the intervention groups in any of the assessed sleep outcomes, neither when stratified by sex, nor when performed in subgroups based on baseline or end of study s-25(OH)D level or presence of sleep complaints at baseline. Conclusions We were not able to demonstrate a significant effect of vitamin D supplementation on sleep in this vitamin D insufficient population. RCT investigating vitamin D for 4 months in participants with low vitamin D status. Vitamin D did not improve sleep duration, excessive daytime sleepiness or insomnia. The role of vitamin D in sleep health remains controversial.

Abstract
Background Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) has been frequently used to study in many malignant tumors, while serum nutritional markers are used to determine a person's health status. However, the link between serum micronutrient concentrations and HE4 has not yet been clarified. Methods A total of 2464 eligible female participants and serum concentrations of nutritional biomarkers were chosen from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2001-2002. For statistical analysis, we used the χ 2 test, multivariable linear regression, and analysis of variance. Adjusted models were used, and the concentrations of serum nutritional biomarkers were divided into quartiles. Results The mean age of the participants was 48.07 years. Among twelve micronutrients, five were negatively associated with HE4 in models 1, 2 and 3. Only α-carotene, trans-β-carotene, cis-β-carotene, trans-lycopene and retinol were associated with HE4, with beta coefficients of -0.102, -0.027, -0.506, -0.131 and -0.054, respectively. After performing quartile-based analysis, statistical significance was only found for serum α-carotene, trans-lycopene, and retinol in the three models. In model 3, the beta coefficients [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] of the fourth quartiles compared to the first quartiles for α-carotene, trans-lycopene, and retinol were -3.390 (-5.053, -1.727), -4.036 (-5.722, -2.351) and -4.146 (-5.899, -2.393), respectively. Serum concentrations of these three nutritional biomarkers were inversely related to serum HE4 concentration (p trend <0.001). Conclusion HE4 is a useful and novel biomarker that can be used with many diseases, especially ovarian cancer. Three of our selected micronutrients were inversely associated with HE4 concentration. Supplement of micronutrients may reduce the levels of HE4 and the subsequent of ovarian cancer's risk. Therefore, a formula that correlates HE4 with nutritional biomarkers needs to be established before use in clinical applications.

Abstract
Background To date, hemodialysis (HD) is the most common therapy for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. However, it causes different complications such as sleep disorders. Sleep regulation is connected to vitamin D; hence, its deficiency might influence the quality and duration of sleep. This study is aimed at evaluating the correlation of sleep quality and vitamin D levels in 80 HD patients. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed on 80 hemodialysis patients admitted to 29 Bahman hospitals in Tabriz, Iran. Before beginning of dialysis, serum 25 (OH) D levels were assessed among patients and the sleep patterns and sleep quality of patients were accurately calculated by the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) standard questionnaire. Results Our results showed that 22 HD patients (27.5%) had severe sleep disorders. In addition, it was found that serum levels of vitamin D had significant correlation with sleep quality (r = −0.341, p = 0.002) in general, even after adjusting confounding factors such as calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), and parathyroid hormone (PTH) level. In poor sleepers (PSQI ≤ 5), a negative correlation was observed between the levels of vitamin D and PSQI score (r = −0.397, p = 0.004). PSQI scores in the normal range of PTH (r = −0.377, p = 0.006) and in >600 pg/ml of PTH (r = −0.675, p = 0.011) had a correlation with vitamin D levels. The level of vitamin D was the single independent predictor of sleep efficiency (β coefficient = −0.386, p = 0.001). Conclusion The present project reported that the positive effect of vitamin D is associated with sleep disorder in HD patients. In future studies, normal levels of Ca and P should be considered along with normal vitamin D levels among the included patients.

Abstract
A high homocysteine level is known to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases; however, whether or not low homocysteine level contributes to any damage to the body has not been extensively studied. Furthermore, acquiring healthy subject databases from domestic studies on homocysteine is not trivial. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the causality between serum homocysteine levels and health status and lifestyle factors, particularly with a focus on low serum homocysteine levels. Additionally, we discussed a systematic methodical platform for data collection and statistical analysis, using the descriptive analysis of the chi-square test, t test, multivariate analysis of variance, and logistic regression.This study was a cross-sectional analysis of 5864 subjects (i.e., clients of a health examination clinic) in Taipei, Taiwan during a general health check-up in 2017. The patients' personal information and associated links were excluded. A sample group was selected as per the health criteria defined for this research whose data were processed using SPSS for descriptive statistical analysis using chi-square test, t test, multivariate analysis of variance, and logistic regression analysis.Those working for >12 hours/day had a higher homocysteine level than those working for <12 hours/day (P < .001). The average serum homocysteine level was 7.9 and 8.6 mol/L for people with poor sleep quality and good sleep quality, respectively (P = .003). The homocysteine value of people known to have cancer was analyzed using the logistic regression analysis, revealing a Δodds value of 0.898. The percentage of subjects with a homocysteine value of ≤6.3 μmol/L, who perceived their health status as "not very good" or "very bad," was higher than those with a higher homocysteine level. The number of subjects who perceived their health as poor was higher than expected.The results suggest that the homocysteine level could be an effective health management indicator. We conclude that normal homocysteine level should not be ≤6.3 μmol/L. Moreover, homocysteine should not be considered as harmful and its fluctuations from the normal range could be utilized to infer a person's physical status for health management.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Low serum vitamin D levels are known to be associated with working conditions and poor sleep, but precedent studies on this issue were limited by the absence of objective sleep measurements or clear distinction between daytime and night shift work. Hence, we aimed to examine serum vitamin D levels and sleep in daytime and night-shift workers using actigraphy. METHODS A total of 412 night-shift and 432 daytime workers at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital was recruited. All participants completed questionnaires regarding demographic and clinical characteristics. They underwent blood tests for serum vitamin D levels. Objective sleep data were obtained from 150 night-shift workers and 203 daytime workers using actigraphy. RESULTS There was no significant difference in serum vitamin D levels between night-shift and daytime workers after controlling for possible confounders. In daytime workers, vitamin D deficiency was closely related to shorter duration of total sleep time (odds ratio [OR]: 3.07, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.51-6.26, P = .002) and higher risk of excessive daytime sleepiness (OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.30-3.74, P = .003). Deficient vitamin D was also associated with life quality impairment regarding psychological health (OR: 1.83, 95% CI: 1.07-3.29, P = .028) and social relationship (OR: 1.78, 95% CI: 1.10-2.88, P = .020). However, in night-shift workers, no significant association was observed between serum vitamin D level and sleep parameters, depressive/anxiety symptoms, or quality of life. CONCLUSIONS The modest adverse impact of poor vitamin D status on sleep could be attenuated by substantial shift work-related sleep disturbances in night-shift workers. Further studies might be needed to clarify the beneficial effect of vitamin D supplementation for improving sleep and daytime sleepiness in workers with various working conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of carotenoid intake on the risk of mental disorders and poor sleep quality is unclear. Thus, we sought to examine the association between carotenoid intake, mental health, and sleep quality among university students. METHODS A total of 368 healthy university students (181 men, 49%), aged 18 to 43 years, volunteered for this study. Dietary intake, physical activity, sleep quality, mental health, and body mass index (BMI) were evaluated. A multivariable logistic regression analysis test was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 22.9 ± 3.9 years and mean BMI was 23.1 ± 3.8 kg/m2. The students in the highest quartile of carotenoid intake had a significantly lower risk of poor sleep quality (OR = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.09 to 0.40; P < 0.001) and depression (OR = 0.27, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.59; P = 0.001). In the sex-stratified subgroup analysis, the depression risk was significant for men (OR = 0.28, 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.59; P = 0.007), but not for women. Furthermore, we did not observe any specific relationship between carotenoid intake and the risk of anxiety or stress. CONCLUSION It appears that the students with higher carotenoid intake may have a better quality of sleep and lower risk of depression. More longitudinal and in-depth qualitative and quantitative research, with a longer-term follow-up, is needed to support the veracity of our findings.

Abstract
Studies have explored how vitamin B12 status affects sleep among elders and children, but this remains to be investigated among young adults. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess the association between serum vitamin B12 and sleep among female college students in Saudi Arabia. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 355 participants (age (years), 20.7 ± 1.5; body mass index, 23.6 kg/m2 ± 5.2) at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fasting blood samples were analyzed regarding the serum vitamin B12 and blood lipids. Anthropometric, socio-demographic, clinical history, stress, physical activity, and dietary data were collected. We assessed the sleep statuses of the participants using the PSQI. Around 72% of the participants were “poor” sleepers (PSQI > 5). Subgroup analysis within the tertiles showed that participants with higher vitamin B12 in the second and third tertiles reported better scores for sleep quality (B ± SE = −12.7 ± 5.6, p = 0.03; B ± SE = −32.7 ± 16.4, p = 0.05, respectively) and also reported a lower use of sleep medication (B ± SE = −21.2 ± 9.9, p = 0.03, in the second tertile only), after adjusting for the waist–hip ratio and stress. However, sleep was not found to be directly associated with either serum vitamin B12 or dietary vitamin B12. In conclusion, the serum vitamin B12 results show that the participants with higher vitamin B12 in the second and third tertiles reported better scores on the sleep quality scale and a lower use of sleep medication. However, no such associations were observed with the overall PSQI. More studies with larger sample sizes are needed to establish a direct relationship between sleep and vitamin B12.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined relationships of vitamin D status with over time changes in patterns of sleep in a longitudinal study of Whites and African-American urban middle-aged adults, while further testing effect modification by age group, sex and race and the potential roles of dietary and supplemental vitamin D. METHODS Data on 1,760 middle-aged participants in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span (HANDLS study: Age range at v2: 33-71y, mean±SD:53.0±8.8, % women: 58.4%, % African-American:60.3%) were used, with complete baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] serum concentration data, initial selected covariates and mediators, and initial and/or follow-up data on five sub-scales (sleep duration, daytime dysfunction, sleep disturbance, sleep latency and sleep quality) of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Mean±SD time between initial and follow-up visits: 4.1±1.5 years. Time-interval multiple mixed-effects linear regression models were used. RESULTS Upon multiple testing adjustment, among Whites, initial 25(OH)D was associated with better sleep duration [25(OH)D × TIME γ±SE: -0.027±0.011, P=0.017] and sleep quality [25(OH)D × TIME γ±SE: -0.026±0.010, P=0.008] over time, with heterogeneity by race found for both relationships (P<0.05 for 25(OH)D × TIME × Race in the un-stratified model). These relationships remained unaltered after further adjustment for dietary and supplemental vitamin D, indicating that this association may be largely explained by sunlight exposure. LIMITATIONS Limitations included small sample size, selection bias, residual confounding and lack of objective sleep measures. Conclusions Vitamin D status, possibly through mechanisms involving sunlight exposure, was linked to a potential improvement in sleep duration and quality among White urban adults.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Although associations between sleep quality and environmental factors and nutrient intake have been reported, interactions between these factors have not been elucidated in detail. Therefore, this cross-sectional study examined the effects of regular exercise and nutrient intake on sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which is the most frequently used index for sleep evaluation. METHODS The participants included 378 individuals aged 40 years or older living in Shika Town, Ishikawa Prefecture. Of these individuals, 185 met the inclusion criteria. The participants completed a self-administered questionnaire assessing lifestyle habits and frequency and duration of exercise, the PSQI, and the brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ) on nutrient intake. RESULTS A two-way analysis of covariance on regular exercise and PSQI scores indicated that protein intake (17.13% of energy) was significantly higher in the regular exercise and PSQI ≤10 groups than in the non-regular exercise or PSQI ≥11 groups (p = 0.002). In a multiple logistic regression analysis with PSQI scores (≤10 and ≥11), protein intake was a significant independent variable in any of the models adjusted for confounding factors such as age, sex, body mass index, current smoker, and current drinker (OR: 1.357, 95% CI: 1.081, 1.704, p = 0.009) in the regular exercise group but not in the non-regular exercise group.Conclusions We identified a positive relationship between sleep quality and protein intake in the regular exercise group. These findings suggest that regular exercise at least twice a week for 30 minutes or longer combined with high protein intake contributes to good sleep quality.

Abstract
Vitamin B12 insufficiency is a global health issue among women of childbearing age, yet few studies have investigated its prevalence and risk factors among healthy Middle Eastern populations. This cross-sectional study included 346 Saudi women aged 19–30 years and enrolled at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A series of questionnaires were administered to record the study participants’ sociodemographic status, medical history, dietary intake, and physical activity. Participants’ anthropometric data were also recorded and their fasting blood samples were analyzed. The rate of vitamin B12 insufficiency (≤220 pmol/L) was approximately 6% among the study participants. After adjusting for confounding factors, it was observed that the risk factors for vitamin B12 insufficiency included daily sitting time ≥ 7 h, low income (<10,000 Saudi riyal) and increasing age. The recommended dietary allowance of vitamin B12 (>2.4 mcg/day) has been shown to confer reasonable protection against vitamin B12 insufficiency. These study findings highlight that a combination of increased physical activity and dietary vitamin B12 intake above the current recommended dietary allowance may help improve the serum vitamin B12 levels of young women of childbearing age, especially those with a low socioeconomic status. Timely detection and protection against vitamin B12 insufficiency in this subpopulation are important to prevent maternal and fetal health risks.

Abstract
This paper is a literature overview of the complex relationship between vitamin C and two opposing physiological states, physical activity and sleep. The evidence suggests a clinically important bidirectional association between these two phenomena mediated by different physiological mechanisms. With this in mind, and knowing that both states share a connection with oxidative stress, we discuss the existing body of evidence to answer the question of whether vitamin C supplementation can be beneficial in the context of sleep health and key aspects of physical activity, such as performance, metabolic changes, and antioxidant function. We analyze the effect of ascorbic acid on the main sleep components, sleep duration and quality, focusing on the most common disorders: insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome. Deeper understanding of those interactions has implications for both public health and clinical practice.

Abstract
The antioxidant vitamin E (α-tocopherol, α-TOH) protects lipids from oxidation by reactive oxygen species. We hypothesized that lifestyle factors associate with vitamin E metabolism marked by urinary α-tocopheronolactone hydroquinone (α-TLHQ) and α-carboxymethyl-hydroxychroman (α-CEHC levels), as potential reflection of lipid oxidation. We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Netherlands Epidemiology of Obesity Study. Serum α-TOH, and urinary α-TLHQ and α-CEHC were quantified by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Information on the lifestyle factors (sleep, physical activity (PA), smoking and alcohol) were collected through questionnaires. Multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to assess the associations between the lifestyle factors and α-TOH measures. A total of 530 participants (46% men) were included with mean (SD) age of 56 (6) years. Of the examined lifestyle factors, only poor sleep was associated with a higher serum α-TOH (mean difference: 4% (95% CI: 1, 7%)). Current smoking was associated with higher urinary α-CEHC (32%: (14%, 53%)), with evidence of a dose–response relationship with smoking intensity (low pack years, 24% (2, 52%); high pack years, 55% (25, 93%)). Moderate physical activity was associated with a lower α-TLHQ relative to α-CEHC (−17%: (−26, −6%), compared with low PA). Only specific lifestyle factors associate with vitamin E metabolism. Examining serum α-TOH does not provide complete insight in vitamin E antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Vitamin D contributes to numerous physiological processes within the body but primarily calcium and bone homeostasis. Emerging evidence highlights a novel role for vitamin D in maintaining and regulating optimal sleep. Sleep is a known regulator of bone health, highlighting the interconnectedness between vitamin D concentrations, sleep duration and bone metabolism. It is possible that the relationship between sleep length and vitamin D is bidirectional, with vitamin D playing a role in sleep health and conversely, sleep affecting vitamin D levels. Nevertheless, limited information on the direction of the interaction is available, and much remains to be learned concerning the complex relationship between insufficient sleep duration and vitamin D deficiency. Given the potential to implement interventions to improve sleep and vitamin D supplementation, understanding this relationship further could represent a novel way to support and improve health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Although some juices affect subjective sleep quality, there is a lack of information on the effect of a specific juice on objective sleep quality and heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep; thus the present study investigated whether a blended juice made from natural extracts influenced sleep quality and HRV during sleep in adults with disturbed sleep. SUBJECTS/METHODS A randomized, crossover study was conducted on twenty-five adults (15/10, female/male) complaining of difficulty initiating or maintaining nighttime sleep (Pittsburgh sleep quality index [PSQI] ≥ 5). During feeding sessions (FS), subjects received sleep-inducing juice made of natural ingredients (250 mL/trial) twice a day for 8 weeks or non-FS (N-FS) for 8 weeks while maintaining normal activities. Sleep quality and parameters were recorded via wearable actigraph for 7 consecutive days, and PSQI scores were assessed before and after the intervention. HRV was also monitored at rest and during sleep. RESULTS After receiving the sleep-inducing juice intervention (FS), PSQI scores were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) and correlated with a significant decline in fatigue severity scale and visual analogue scale levels (P < 0.05; both). HRV indices of vagal activity were significantly improved during FS (P < 0.05), and no significant differences in N-FS were observed. Sleep efficiency and total sleep time increased significantly (P < 0.05) and sleep latency, total counts, sleep fragmentation index, and movement index, decreased significantly (P < 0.05, all 4) during FS, with no significant differences-observed during N-FS. CONCLUSIONS This study results demonstrated that an 8-week course of sleep-inducing juice has led to improve sleep quality, suggesting an enhanced cardiac vagal tone during sleep. Thus, it could be a well-tolerated option for adults with disturbed sleep.

Abstract
Over the past decades, there has been an increase in overweight and obesity worldwide rates in both in adult and children. In parallel, it has been reported a worsening of sleep duration and quality. Some studies have shown an association between obesity and sleep disturbances (SD) vice versa, subjects with obesity have a greater risk of SD. As well as SD influences diet, also food choices have been shown to influence various sleep-related variables, such as duration and quality. For this reason, nutrition could represent an important tool not only to lose weight but also to improve sleep in patients with obesity and sleep disturbances. Thus, the aim of this review is to provide an overview of the studies that assessed the association between obesity and SD and vice versa, highlighting possible nutritional advices as a tool to improve sleep in patients with obesity and sleep disturbances.

Abstract
PURPOSE Few previous studies estimated the association between micronutrient status and sleep quality; no previous work was done in patients with depression compared with healthy controls. METHODS Using a case-control design, 96 patients with depression were age- and sex-matched with 96 healthy controls. Dietary assessment utilized a standardized questionnaire, and analysis focused comprehensively on 18 micronutrient items. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize findings. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of poor sleep quality. RESULTS Patients with depression had a significantly lower sleep quality than controls with PSQI scores of 7.3 ± 2.7 and 5.1 ± 2.5, respectively. The prevalence of poor sleep quality in patients with depression was almost double the prevalence of poor sleep quality in the general population. The micronutrient status of vitamin B12 and Mg successfully predicted sleep quality in healthy controls. However, in patients with depression, micronutrient status failed to predict sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS The current research showed that sleep quality was positively associated with Mg intake, and negatively associated with vitamin B12 in healthy adults. For patients with depression in this study sample, sleep quality was not associated with micronutrient intake status. Further research is needed to determine if intake of micronutrients can improve sleep and/or depressive symptoms in patients with depression.

Abstract
We conducted a narrative review on the interaction between dietary patterns with demographic and lifestyle variables in relation to health status assessment. The food pattern has the advantage of taking into account the correlations that may exist between foods or groups of foods, but also between nutrients. It is an alternative and complementary approach in analysing the relationship between nutrition and the risk of chronic diseases. For the determination of dietary patterns one can use indices/scores that evaluate the conformity of the diet with the nutrition guidelines or the established patterns (a priori approach). The methods more commonly used are based on exploratory data (a posteriori): cluster analysis and factor analysis. Dietary patterns may vary according to sex, socio-economic status, ethnicity, culture and other factors, but more, they may vary depending on different associations between these factors. The dietary pattern exerts its effects on health in a synergistic way or even in conjunction with other lifestyle factors, and we can therefore refer to a 'pattern of lifestyle'.

Abstract
Background and objectives: Lower vitamin status has been linked to cognitive deficits, pending mechanistic elucidation. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], folate and cobalamin were explored against brain volumes and white matter integrity (WMI). Methods: Two prospective waves from Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span (HANDLS) study were primarily used [Baltimore, City, MD, 2004–2015, N = 183–240 urban adults (Agev1: 30–64 years)]. Serum vitamin 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], folate and cobalamin concentrations were measured at visits 1 (v1: 2004–2009), while structural and diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (sMRI/dMRI) outcomes were measured at vscan: 2011–2015. Top 10 ranked adjusted associations were corrected for multiple testing using familywise Bonferroni (FWER < 0.05) and false discovery rates (FDR, q-value < 0.10). Results: We found statistically significant (FWER < 0.05; β±SE) direct associations of 25(OH)D(v1) with WM volumes [overall: +910 ± 336/males: +2,054 ± 599], occipital WM; [overall: +140 ± 40, males: +261 ± 67 and Agev1 > 50 years: +205 ± 54]; parietal WM; [overall: +251 ± 77, males: +486 ± 129 and Agev1 > 50 years: +393 ± 108] and left occipital pole volume [overall: +15.70 ± 3.83 and above poverty: 19.0 ± 4.3]. Only trends were detected for cobalamin exposures (q < 0.10), while serum folate (v1) was associated with lower mean diffusivity (MD) in the Anterior Limb of the Internal Capsule (ALIC), reflecting greater WMI, overall, while regional FA (e.g., cingulum gyrus) was associated with greater 25(OH)D concentration. Conclusions: Among urban adults, serum 25(OH)D status was consistently linked to larger occipital and parietal WM volumes and greater region-specific WMI. Pending longitudinal replication of our findings, randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation should be conducted against brain marker outcomes.

Abstract
Complex processes appear to link sleep duration and quality with dietary patterns. Numerous studies show healthful benefits of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, but few have examined its association with sleep duration or quality. The current study tested cross-sectional associations of DASH diet quality score with sleep quality among adults. Analyses of participants were from the 2005–2008 wave of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (n = 3941 adults ≥30 years of age, complete data). We performed sex- and age group-stratified multiple OLS regression analyses with DASH total score and components as main predictors and sleep quality as main outcomes, adjusting sequentially for socio-demographic, behavioral and health-related factors. Sex and age differences in associations of DASH with sleep quality, adjusting for covariates, were also examined by incorporating two-way interaction terms between sex/age and the DASH score in each unstratified model. We found that the DASH diet score was inversely related to poor sleep-related daytime dysfunction adjusted by age, sex, demographic and socio-economic factors. Some sex-specific associations were detected between DASH diet component scores and sleep quality. Notably, the potassium DASH component was inversely associated with Factor 1 (“sleepiness and sleep disturbance”) among women. The fiber DASH component was associated with better sleep quality and inversely related to Factor 2 (“sleep-related daytime dysfunction”) in younger subjects. This study indicates health benefits of the DASH diet for sleep duration and quality. Future longitudinal studies and randomized placebo-controlled trials are required to ascertain protective effects.

Abstract
Background/aim Deficient levels of vitamin D are an important factor in the pathogenesis of some neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and depression status and sleep disorders of patients on dialysis. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, 121 hemodialysis patients were enrolled. All patients had been on hemodialysis for at least six months at the time of the study. Sleep quality and depression status were measured by using specific inventories. All the patients filled out Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and gave blood samples. Vitamin D levels were measured for 121 patients, and statistical analysis was done by using SPSS. Results Regression analyses demonstrated that low levels of 25(OH)D and high BDI score were independent risk factors for poor sleep quality [ORs were 0.668 (0.566–0.789), 1.080 (1.001–1.164), and 1.080 (1.001–1.164), respectively]. Conclusion Our results suggest that deficiency of 25(OH)D is an important independent risk factor for poor sleep quality in hemodialysis patients.

Sleep duration is associated with vitamin D deficiency in older women living in Macao, China: A pilot cross-sectional study. PLoS One 2020; 15:e0229642. Abstract
Chinese women are known to have both a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) <50 nmol/l). Associations between sleep duration and circulating 25OHD have recently been reported but, to our knowledge, these associations have not been studied in older Chinese populations. We thus investigated whether sleep duration was associated with vitamin D status in a population from Macao, China, and whether sleep duration modified the association between MetS and vitamin D deficiency. In 207 older (>55 years) Macanese, anthropometry, blood samples and validated questionnaires, including sleep duration and cardiovascular risk factors, were simultaneously collected. On multivariable categorical analyses, those women, not men, who had short sleep duration (≤6 hours (h)) were at a 2-fold risk for vitamin D deficiency (both <50 nmol/L and <37 nmol/L; OR = 1.94, 95%CI 1.29–2.92; OR = 2.05, 95%CI 1.06–3.98, respectively) and those who had longer sleep duration (>8 h) were 3-fold more likely to have vitamin D deficiency (OR = 3.07, 95%CI 1.47–6.39; OR = 2.75, 95%CI 1.08–7.00, respectively) compared to those with normal sleep duration (6–8 h). Both women and men with MetS were 2-fold more likely to have vitamin D deficiency (women: OR = 2.04, 95%CI 1.31–3.17; OR = 2.15, 95%CI 1.11–4.17, respectively; men: OR = 2.01, 95%CI 1.23–3.28; OR = 2.04, 95%CI 1.00–4.29, respectively). Moreover, women with both short sleep duration and MetS had an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency (OR = 3.26, 95%CI 1.10–9.64). These associations were not found in those with longer sleep. Men with longer sleep and MetS had a 5-fold risk of vitamin D deficiency (OR = 5.22; 95%CI 2.70–10.12). This association was non-significant for men with shorter sleep. We conclude that both short and long sleep duration were associated with vitamin D deficiency in older Chinese women. Further research is needed in larger cohorts or with intervention studies to further examine the associations between reduced sleep, metabolic syndrome and vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although it has been shown that specific foods and nutrients are associated with sleep quality, few studies have examined the association of dietary variety and appetite with sleep quality in older adults. DESIGN AND SETTING A cross-sectional study was conducted that examined the association of dietary variety and appetite with sleep quality in Japanese adults aged ≥70 years who resided in the metropolitan area of Tokyo, Japan. PARTICIPANTS Data were collected in two steps: a mailed interview survey and an on-site survey. Those who responded to the surveys and met the inclusion criteria were included. MEASUREMENTS Dietary variety, appetite, and sleep quality were assessed using a Dietary Variety Score (DVS), Council on Nutrition Appetite Questionnaire (CNAQ) score, and sleep efficiency, respectively. The sleep efficiency is the ratio of sleep duration to total time in bed (retiring time-awakening time). We defined the individuals with a sleep efficiency less than 75% as having poor sleep quality. RESULTS Mean DVS and CNAQ score were 3.8 and 29.6 points, respectively. The rate of individuals with poor sleep quality was 11.7%. In the fully adjusted model, the odds ratios (OR) for low sleep efficiency in the middle and highest group categories of the DVS were 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54-1.29) and 0.50 (95% CI, 0.28-0.90), respectively, in reference to the lowest group category (p for trend = 0.023). The OR for low sleep efficiency in the middle and highest group categories of the CNAQ score were 0.73 (95% CI, 0.47-1.14) and 0.54 (95% CI, 0.30-0.96), respectively, in reference to the lowest group category (p for trend = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS The higher DVS and CNAQ scores were significantly associated with higher sleep efficiency. Thus, dietary variety and good appetite might help maintain good sleep quality in urban-dwelling older Japanese adults.

Abstract
One third of U.S. adults report short sleep (<7 h), which has been linked to negative health outcomes. Inadequate intake of micronutrients across the U.S. adult population has been reported, and a relationship between sleep conditions and micronutrient intake is emerging. This cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2005–2016) (n = 26,211) showed that participants with short sleep duration had a lower usual intake (Food + Supplements) of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D in all adults aged 19+ years, and vitamin K in adults aged 19–50 years, even after adjusting for covariates. In addition, participants reporting short sleep had a higher percentage of individuals with intake lower than the estimated average requirement (EAR) across multiple nutrients. Age and gender differences were observed in the prevalence of inadequate intake across multiple nutrients. Adults aged 51–99 years with short sleep duration had inadequate intake with respect to more nutrients. In females there was an association between short sleep and a higher prevalence of inadequate intake (Food + Spp) for calcium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, D, E, and K (above adequate intake). Conversely, males reporting short sleep only had an inadequate intake of vitamin D. Overall, we demonstrate that short sleep is associated with increased nutrient inadequacy, emphasizing the possible need for dietary supplementation.

Abstract
Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder which is associated with various diseases’ development and progression, such as obesity, type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Recent investigation of the gut-brain axis enhances our understanding of the role of the gut microbiota in brain-related diseases. However, whether the gut microbiota is associated with insomnia remains unknown. In the present investigation, leveraging the 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing of V3-V4 region and the novel bioinformatic analysis, it was demonstrated that between insomnia and healthy populations, the composition, diversity and metabolic function of the gut microbiota are significantly changed. Other than these, redundancy analysis, co-occurrence analysis and PICRUSt underpin the gut taxa composition, signaling pathways, and metabolic functions perturbed by insomnia disorder. Moreover, random forest together with cross-validation identified two signature bacteria, which could be used to distinguish the insomnia patients from the healthy population. Furthermore, based on the relative abundance and clinical sleep parameter, we constructed a prediction model utilizing artificial neural network (ANN) for auxiliary diagnosis of insomnia disorder. Overall, the aforementioned study provides a comprehensive understanding of the link between the gut microbiota and insomnia disorder.

Abstract
Background Sleep disorders and vitamin D deficiency are among the most common health problems. Few studies investigated the effect of vitamin D on objectively recorded sleep with sound methodological quality and reasonable temporal proximity. Objective To investigate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations and objective sleep parameters assessed within close temporal proximity in a population-based sample. It is expected that higher serum 25(OH)D concentrations are associated with 1) better objective sleep outcomes (longer sleep duration, higher sleep efficiency, earlier mid-sleep time) and 2) more positive subjective sleep evaluations. Methods A subset of participants (n = 1045) from the LIFE-Adult-Study was analysed. Measurement of serum 25(OH)D vitamin was performed using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Actigraphic assessments were performed using SenseWear Pro 3 devices. The following objective sleep parameters were calculated: total sleep duration, night sleep duration, night sleep efficiency, midsleep time and wake after sleep onset (WASO). Subjective sleep evaluations were assessed via questionnaire (sleep quality (PSQI), daytime sleepiness (ESS)). Data were analysed applying a multiple linear regression model with a stepwise approach. Results The regression models revealed significant associations of serum 25(OH)D concentration with night sleep duration and midsleep time. No association was found for total sleep duration and night sleep efficiency. Higher serum 25(OH)D concentration was further associated with shorter WASO in males but longer WASO in females. Moreover, serum 25(OH)D concentration did not show any significant association with subjective sleep quality and daytime sleepiness. Conclusion The results indicate that a higher concentration of serum 25(OH)D is associated with longer and earlier night sleep. Although the present study was able to demonstrate an association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and objective sleep parameters, no conclusion about underlying mechanisms or causal inferences can be drawn.

Abstract
A substantial burden of disease and mortality globally is attributable to both sleep disruption and low intakes of fruit and vegetable (FV) and there is increasing mechanistic and epidemiological evidence to support a reciprocal relationship between the two. This review provides an overview of experimental and observational studies assessing the relations between sleep and FV consumption from 52 human adult studies. Experimental studies are currently limited and show inconsistent results. Observational studies support a non-linear association with adults sleeping the recommended 7–9 hours/day having the highest intakes of FV. The potential mechanisms linking sleep and FV consumption are highlighted. Disrupted sleep influences FV consumption through homeostatic and non-homeostatic mechanisms. Conversely, FV consumption may influence sleep through polyphenol content via several potential pathways. Few human experimental studies have examined the effects of FV items and their polyphenols on sleep and there is a need for more studies to address this. An appreciation of the relationship between sleep and FV consumption may help optimize sleep and FV consumption and may reduce the burden of chronic diseases. This review provides implications for public health and directions for future work.

Abstract
There is a lack of research into 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) status, light exposure and sleep patterns in South Asian populations. In addition, results of research studies are conflicting as to whether there is an association between 25(OH)D status and sleep quality. We investigated 25(OH)D status, self-reported and actigraphic sleep quality in n = 35 UK dwelling postmenopausal women (n = 13 South Asians, n = 22 Caucasians), who kept daily sleep diaries and wore wrist-worn actiwatch (AWL-L) devices for 14 days. A subset of n = 27 women (n = 11 South Asian and n = 16 Caucasian) also wore a neck-worn AWL-L device to measure their light exposure. For 25(OH)D concentration, South Asians had a median ± IQR of 43.8 ± 28.2 nmol/L, which was significantly lower than Caucasians (68.7 ± 37.4 nmol/L)(P = 0.001). Similarly, there was a higher sleep fragmentation in the South Asians (mean ± SD 36.9 ± 8.9) compared with the Caucasians (24.7 ± 7.1)(P = 0.002). Non-parametric circadian rhythm analysis of rest/activity patterns showed a higher night-time activity (L5) (22.6 ± 14.0 vs. 10.5 ± 4.4; P = 0.0008) and lower relative amplitude (0.85 ± 0.07 vs. 0.94 ± 0.02; P < 0.0001) in the South Asian compared with the Caucasian women. More South Asians (50%) met the criteria for sleep disorders (PSQI score >5) than did Caucasians (27%) (P = 0.001, Fishers Exact Test). However, there was no association between 25(OH)D concentration and any sleep parameter measured (P > 0.05) in either ethnic group. South Asians spent significantly less time in illuminance levels over 200 lx (P = 0.009) than did Caucasians. Overall, our results show that postmenopausal South Asian women have lower 25(OH)D concentration than Caucasian women. They also have higher sleep fragmentation, as well as a lower light exposure across the day. This may have detrimental implications for their general health and further research into sleep quality and light exposure in the South Asian ethnic group is warranted.
