Association between short-term ozone exposure and allergic conjunctivitis in China: A multi-city case-crossover study

Short-term exposure to ozone has been linked to multiple allergic diseases, but the relationship between ozone exposure and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between short-term exposure to ozone and the risk of AC. We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study across five Chinese cities from 2014 to 2022. Daily outpatient visit records for AC were identified in five hospitals using either the diagnosis name or ICD-10 code H10.1. Data on air pollution and meteorological conditions were also collected. We first examined the city-specific association between short-term ozone exposure and AC using conditional logistic regression. A random-effects meta-analysis was then conducted to obtain overall estimates. During the study period, 130,093 outpatient visits for AC occurred, with 58.8% (76,482) being male and 41.2% (53,611) female. A one-standard-deviation (SD) increase in ozone was associated with an 8.3% increase (95% CI: 3.8%, 13.0%) in AC outpatient visits. Similar positive associations were observed when adjusting for other pollutants (PM2.5, CO, SO2 and NO2) in two-pollutant and multi-pollutant models. Furthermore, the positive association remained consistent when using mixed-effects regression models or further adjusting for meteorological conditions. In addition, no effect modification of the AC-ozone association by sex, age and season was apparent. This study provides evidence supporting a positive association between short-term ozone exposure and AC risk in China. This highlights the potential value of mitigating ozone pollution to reduce the risk of ocular surface disorders.

Understanding mechanistic variability in physiological and biochemical responses of pea cultivars (Pisum sativum L.) to ozone exposure

Increasing concentration of ground level O3 and its negative impacts on agricultural output is well documented, however, the response of leguminous crop plants is still sparsely cited. Given their nutritional richness, legume seeds are widely esteemed as a crucial dietary staple worldwide, prized for their abundance of oil, protein, dietary fiber, and low-fat characteristics. Termed as the "poor man's meat" due to their high-quality protein, they hold immense economic value. Acknowledging the significance of legumes, a field experiment was conducted to understand the physiological and antioxidant responses, stomatal characteristics, and yield response in three cultivars of Pisum sativum L. (K Agaiti, K Uday and K Damini), exposed to elevated ozone (O3). In the present study, Pisum sativum cultivars were subjected to ambient (control) and elevated (+15 ppb) concentrations of O3, using separate sets of OTCs. Elevated O3 stimulated the activity of the enzymes of Halliwell Asada pathway, which were responsible for the differential response of the three experimental cultivars. While K Agaiti and K Uday focused on upregulating their antioxidant defense, K Damini followed the strategy of biomass allocation. Test weight showed that K Damini was most efficient in succoring the yield losses under elevated O3. Under elevated O3, test weight reduced by 8.91%, 7.52%, and 5.1%, respectively, in K Agaiti, followed by K Uday and K Damini, rendering K Agaiti most sensitive to O3 stress. The present study not only helps us to elucidate the O3 sensitivity of the selected experimental cultivars, it also helps us in screening O3 tolerant cultivars for future agricultural practices.

Large-Scale Computational Screening-Aided Development of High-Performance Adsorbent for Simultaneous Capture of Aromatic Volatile Organic Compounds

The development of an efficient adsorbent for the simultaneous capture of large amounts of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX) is an important and challenging issue. Here, through a stepwise screening of 10,142 metal-organic framework (MOF) structures from the computation-ready, experimental (CoRE) MOF database, 65 MOFs are proposed as promising adsorbent candidates for BTEX capture by considering the structures with accessible pore sizes for BTEX adsorption, sufficient hydrophobicity, high benzene selectivity (>0.2), and large total BTEX uptake (>3 mmol/g). Among the top-performing MOFs in terms of the BTEXmatrix (total BTEX uptake × benzene selectivity), EGUELUY01 was synthesized, and it exhibited large uptakes (≈5 mmol/g) for all BTEX components at concentrations of 1200-1500 ppm, which are superior to the BTEX uptake of the benchmark adsorbent, activated carbon. Moreover, some structure-property relationships required for BTEX adsorbents are provided through the obtained large-scale simulation data and machine learning analysis. The determined relationships will be useful for the future development of efficient BTEX adsorbents.

Glycerophospholipid metabolism changes association with ozone exposure

Exposure to ozone (O3) has been associated with cardiovascular outcomes in humans, yet the underlying mechanisms of the adverse effect remain poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the association between O3 exposure and glycerophospholipid metabolism in healthy young adults. We quantified plasma concentrations of phosphatidylcholines (PCs) and lysophosphatidylcholines (lysoPCs) using a UPLC-MS/MS system. Time-weighted personal exposures were calculated to O3 and co-pollutants over 4 time windows, and we employed orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis to discern differences in lipids profiles between high and low O3 exposure. Linear mixed-effects models and mediation analysis were utilized to estimate the associations between O3 exposure, lipids, and cardiovascular physiology indicators. Forty-three healthy adults were included in this study, and the mean (SD) time-weighted personal exposures to O3 was 9.08 (4.06) ppb. With shorter exposure durations, O3 increases were associated with increasing PC and lysoPC levels; whereas at longer exposure times, the opposite relationship was shown. Furthermore, two specific lipids, namely lysoPC a C26:0 and lysoPC a C17:0, showed significantly positive mediating effects on associations of long-term O3 exposure with pulse wave velocity and systolic blood pressure, respectively. Alterations in specific lipids may underlie the cardiovascular effects of O3 exposure.

Ozone induced multigenerational glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in Drosophila

Ozone (O3), a persistent pollutant, poses a significant health threat. However, research on its multigenerational toxicity remains limited. Leveraging the Drosophila model with its short lifespan and advanced genetic tools, we explored the effects of O3 exposure across three generations of fruit flies. The findings revealed that O3 disrupted motility, body weight, stress resistance, and oxidative stress in three generations of flies, with varying effects observed among them. Transcriptome analysis highlighted the disruption of glucose metabolism-related pathways, encompassing gluconeogenesis/glycolysis, galactose metabolism, and carbon metabolism. Hub genes were identified, and RT-qPCR results indicated that O3 decreased their transcription levels. Comparative analysis of their human orthologs was conducted using Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) and DisGeNET databases. These genes are linked to various metabolic diseases, including diabetes, hypoglycemia, and obesity. The trehalose content was reduced in F0 generation flies but increased in F1-F2 generations after O3 exposure. While the trehalase and glucose levels were decreased across F0-F2 generations. TAG synthesis-related genes were significantly upregulated in F0 generation flies but downregulated in F1-F2 generations. The expression patterns of lipolysis-related genes varied among the three generations of flies. Food intake was increased in F0 generation flies but decreased in F1-F2 generations. Moreover, TAG content was significantly elevated in F0 generation flies by O3 exposure, while it was reduced in F2 generation flies. These differential effects of O3 across three generations of flies suggest a metabolic reprogramming aimed at mitigating the damage caused by O3 to flies. The study affirms the viability of employing the Drosophila model to investigate the mechanisms underlying O3-induced glucose and lipid metabolism disorders while emphasizing the importance of studying the long-term health effects of O3 exposure. Moreover, this research highlights the Drosophila model as a viable tool for investigating the multigenerational effects of pollutants, particularly atmospheric pollutants.

Carbon based nanocomposites, surface functionalization as a promising material for VOCs (volatile organic compounds) treatment

Urban residential and industrial growth development affects sustainable and healthful indoor environments. Environmental issues are a global problem. The deterioration of indoor air quality has prompted the creation of several air cleansing techniques. This review explains how carbon-based materials have influenced the development of air purification systems using photocatalysis. These carbon-based materials offer unique properties and advantages in VOC removal processes. Biochar, produced from biomass pyrolysis, provides an environmentally sustainable solution with its porous structure and carbon-rich composition. Carbon quantum dots, with their quantum confinement effects and tunable surface properties, show promise in VOC sensing and removal applications. Polymers incorporating reduced graphene oxide demonstrate enhanced adsorption capabilities owing to the synergistic effects of graphene and polymer matrices. Activated carbon fibers, characterized by their high aspect ratio and interconnected porosity, provide efficient VOC removal with rapid kinetics. With their unique electronic and structural properties, graphitic carbon nitrides offer opportunities for photocatalytic degradation of VOCs under visible light. Catalysts integrated with MXene, a two-dimensional nanomaterial, exhibit enhanced catalytic activity for VOC oxidation reactions. Using various carbon-based materials in VOC removal showcases the versatility and effectiveness of carbon-based approaches in addressing environmental challenges associated with indoor air pollution. Metal-organic-framework materials are carbon-based compounds. It examines the correlation between VOC mineralization and specific characteristics of carbon materials, including surface area, adsorption capability, surface functional groups, and optoelectronic properties. Discussions include the basics of PCO, variables influencing how well catalysts degrade, and degradation mechanisms. It explores how technology will improve in the future to advance studies on healthy and sustainable indoor air quality.

Low-level ambient ozone exposure associated with neutrophil extracellular traps and pro-atherothrombotic biomarkers in healthy adults

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Uncertainty of the causality determinations for ambient ozone (O3) on cardiovascular events is heightened by the limited understanding of the mechanisms involved in humans. We aimed to examine the pro-atherothrombotic impacts of O3 exposure and to explore the potential mediating roles of dysfunctional neutrophils, focusing on neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs).

METHODS

A longitudinal panel study of 152 healthy adults was conducted in the cool to cold months with relatively low levels of O3 between September 2019 and January 2020 in Beijing, China. Four repeated measurements of indicators reflecting atherothrombotic balance and NETs were performed for each participant.

RESULTS

Daily average exposure levels of ambient O3 were 16.6 μg/m3 throughout the study period. Per interquartile range increase in average concentrations of O3 exposure at prior up to 7 days, we observed elevations of 200.1-276.3% in D-dimer, 27.2-36.8% in thrombin-antithrombin complex, 10.8-60.3% in plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, 13.9-21.8% in soluble P-selectin, 16.5-45.1% in matrix metalloproteinase-8, and 2.4-12.4% in lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2. These pro-atherothrombotic changes were accompanied by endothelial activation, lung injury, and immune inflammation. O3 exposure was also positively associated with circulating NETs indicators, including citrullinated histone H3, neutrophil elastase, myeloperoxidase, and double-stranded DNA. Mediation analyses indicated that NETs could mediate O3-associated pro-atherothrombotic responses. The observational associations remained significant and robust after controlling for other pollutants, and were generally greater in participants with low levels of physical activity.

CONCLUSIONS

Ambient O3 exposure was associated with significant increases in NETs and pro-atherothrombotic potential, even at exposure levels well below current air quality guidelines of the World Health Organization.

Long-term exposure to ambient ozone and cardiovascular diseases: Evidence from two national cohort studies in China

INTRODUCTION

The health effects of ambient ozone have been investigated in many previous studies. However, the effects of long-term exposure to ambient ozone on the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) remain inconclusive.

OBJECTIVES

To estimate the associations of long-term exposure to maximum daily 8-hours average ozone (MDA8 O3) with the incidence of total CVD, heart disease, hypertension, and stroke.

METHODS

This was a prospective cohort study, and the data was obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS) implemented during 2011-2018 and the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) implemented during 2010-2018. We applied a Cox proportional hazards regression model to evaluate the associations of MDA8 O3 with total CVD, heart disease, hypertension, and stroke risks, and the corresponding population-attributable fractions (PAF) attributable to MDA8 O3 were also calculated. All analyses were conducted by R software.

RESULTS

The mean MDA8 O3 concertation of all included participants in the CHARLS and CFPS were 51.03 part per billion (ppb) and 51.15 ppb, respectively. In the CHARLS including 18,177 participants, each 10 ppb increment in MDA8 O3 concentration was associated with a 31% increase [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.31, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22-1.42] in the risk of incident heart disease, and the corresponding population-attributable fractions (PAF) was 13.79% [10.12%-17.32%]. In the CFPS including 30,226 participants, each 10 ppb increment in MDA8 O3 concentration was associated with an increase in the risk of incident total CVD (1.07 [1.02-1.13]), and hypertension (1.10 [1.03-1.18]). The PAFs of total CVD, and hypertension attributable to MDA8 O3 were 3.53% [0.82%-6.16%], and 5.11% [1.73%-8.38%], respectively. Stratified analyses showed greater associations in males, urban areas, and Southern China.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term exposure to MDA8 O3 may increase the incidence of CVD. Therefore, the policies that control O3 and related precursors are persistently needed.

First-time calculation of the spatial distribution of concentration and air quality index over South Africa using TROPOMI data

The release of toxic gases into the atmosphere may reach concentrations that can cause undesirable health, economic, or aesthetic effects. It is therefore important to monitor the amounts of pollutants injected into the atmosphere from various sources. Most countries have a ground network with multiple measuring sites and instruments, that can measure the air quality index (AQI). However, the main challenge with the networks is the low spatial coverage. In this work, satellite data is used to calculate for the first time the spatial distribution of AQI and pollutant concentration over South Africa. The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) onboard Sentinel-5P data is used to calculate AQI from carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) gases. The results that the month of June has the worst air quality distribution throughout the country, while March has the best air quality distribution. Overall, the results clearly show that TROPOMI has the capability to measure air quality at a country and city level.Implications: In this work, satellite data is used to calculate for the first time the spatial distribution of the air quality index (AQI) and pollutant concentration over South Africa. Currently, South Africa has a ground network of instruments that measure AQ, however, the network does not cover the whole country. In this work, we show that the use of TROPOMI can compliment the current network and provide data for the areas not covered.

Hourly effect of atmospheric reactive nitrogen species on the onset of acute ischemic stroke: Insight from the Shanghai Stroke Service System Database

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is one of the most predominant causes of mortality and disability in China. Significant uncertainties in stroke diagnosis and time of onset have resulted in inconsistent evidence on the association between ambient air pollution and the risk of AIS. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of air pollution on AIS onset based on high time-resolution air pollution data and a stroke-specific registry across the past five years. Hourly concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, O3, SO2, CO, NO2 and nitrous acid (HONO) were monitored from 2017 to 2021, with which a distributed lag non-linear model and conditional logistic regression models coupled with a time-stratified case-crossover design were applied to 106,623 AIS cases recorded in the Shanghai Stroke Service (4S) database during the study period. Results from the conditional logistic regression models indicate that acute exposure to PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and HONO was found to be associated with AIS onset, respectively. The corresponding cumulative excessive risks of AIS onset were 0.8 %, 1 %, 2.4 %, 2.1 % and 1.8 % for each interquartile range increase in the respective concentration. The longest lag-effect (up to 13 h) was observed for reactive nitrogen species (RNS), such as NO2 and HONO, which remained robust in two-pollutant models. Similar important role of RNS in AIS onset were confirmed by the distributed lag non-linear model. By demonstrating the transient effect of ambient air pollution on AIS, especially the relationships between RNS and AIS for the first time, our study provides stringent evidence for future mitigation strategies for pollution emission and public health.

Maternal Exposure to Ozone and the Risk of Birth Defects: A Time-Stratified Case-Crossover Study in Southwestern China

A few studies have explored the relationship between air pollution exposure and the risk of birth defects; however, the ozone-related (O3) effects on preconception and first-trimester exposures are still unknown. In this time-stratified case-crossover study, conditional logistic regressions were applied to explore the associations between O3 exposure and the risk of birth defects in Chongqing, China, and stratified analyses were constructed to evaluate the modifiable factors. A total of 6601 cases of birth defects were diagnosed, of which 56.16% were male. O3 exposure was associated with an increased risk of birth defects, and the most significant estimates were observed in the first month before pregnancy: a 10 ug/m3 increase of O3 was related to an elevation of 4.2% [95% confidence interval (CI), 3.4-5.1%]. The associations between O3 exposure and congenital malformations and deformations of the musculoskeletal system were statistically significant during almost all exposure periods. Pregnant women with lower education and income, and from rural areas, were more susceptible to O3 exposure, with the strongest odds ratios (ORs) of 1.066 (95%CI, 1.046-1.087), 1.086 (95%CI, 1.034-1.140), and 1.053 (95%CI, 1.034-1.072), respectively. Our findings highlight the health risks of air pollution exposure and raise awareness of pregnant women's vulnerability and the susceptibility window period.

Recent advances in oxidative degradation of plastics

Oxidative degradation is a powerful method to degrade plastics into oligomers and small oxidized products. While thermal energy has been conventionally employed as an external stimulus, recent advances in photochemistry have enabled photocatalytic oxidative degradation of polymers under mild conditions. This tutorial review presents an overview of oxidative degradation, from its earliest examples to emerging strategies. This review briefly discusses the motivation and the development of thermal oxidative degradation of polymers with a focus on underlying mechanisms. Then, we will examine modern studies primarily relevant to catalytic thermal oxidative degradation and photocatalytic oxidative degradation. Lastly, we highlight some unique studies using unconventional approaches for oxidative polymer degradation, such as electrochemistry.

Temporal evolution of speciated volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from solvent use sources in the Pearl River Delta Region, China (2006-2019)

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from solvent use sources constitute an important part of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. While stringent control measures targeting VOCs have been implemented in recent years, an assessment of historical trends is imperative to evaluate their effectiveness. In this study, trends of VOC emissions, compositions, and reactivity from solvent use sources in the PRD region from 2006 to 2019 were estimated using a developed methodology, which considered the improvement of manufacturing equipment and removal efficiency. Results showed that total VOC emissions from solvent use sources displayed an overall increase from 277 kt in 2006 to 400 kt in 2019 despites some fluctuations, with metal products contributing more than 20 % each year. Aromatics and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) accounted for over 70 % of total VOC emissions, increasing by 21 kt and 52 kt respectively. OFP and SOAFP increased by 40 % and 23 % respectively from 2006 to 2019. Specific aromatic species, including m/p-xylene, toluene, 1,2,3,5-tetramethylbenzene, o-xylene and ethylbenzene were identified as key species in both VOC emission amount and reactivity. This study aims to facilitate the understanding of VOC emission evolution from solvent use sources in the region and provide insights into the impact of enacted measures, aiding in the future development of more targeted and efficient strategies in the PRD region.

Fatty acids metabolism in ozone-induced pulmonary inflammatory injury: Evidence, mechanism and prevention

Ozone (O3) is a major air pollutant that directly threatens the respiratory system, lung fatty acid metabolism disorder is an important molecular event in pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Liver kinase B1 (LKB1) and nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome not only regulate inflammation, but also have close relationship with fatty acid metabolism. However, the role and mechanism of LKB1 and NLRP3 inflammasome in lung fatty acid metabolism, which may contribute to ozone-induced lung inflammation, remain unclear, and effective strategy for preventing O3-induced pulmonary inflammatory injury is lacking. To explore these, mice were exposed to 1.00 ppm O3 (3 h/d, 5 days), and pulmonary inflammation was determined by airway hyperresponsiveness, histopathological examination, total cells and cytokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Targeted fatty acids metabolomics was used to detect medium and long fatty acid in lung tissue. Then, using LKB1-overexpressing adenovirus and NLRP3 knockout (NLRP3-/-) mice to explore the mechanism of O3-induced lung fatty acid metabolism disorder. Results demonstrated that O3 exposure caused pulmonary inflammatory injury and lung medium and long chain fatty acids metabolism disorder, especially decreased dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA). Meanwhile, LKB1 expression was decreased, and NLRP3 inflammasome was activated in lung of mice after O3 exposure. Additionally, LKB1 overexpression alleviated O3-induced lung inflammation and inhibited the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome. And we found that pulmonary fatty acid metabolism disorder was ameliorated of NLRP3 -/- mice compared with those in wide type mice after O3 exposure. Furthermore, administrating DGLA intratracheally prior to O3 exposure significantly attenuated O3-induced pulmonary inflammatory injury. Taken together, these findings suggest that fatty acids metabolism disorder is involved in O3-induced pulmonary inflammation, which is regulated by LKB1-mediated NLRP3 pathway, DGLA supplement could be a useful preventive strategy to ameliorate ozone-associated lung inflammatory injury.

Efficient Ozone Elimination Over MnO2 via Double Moisture-Resistance Protection of Active Carbon and CeO2

The widespread ozone (O3) pollution is extremely hazardous to human health and ecosystems. Catalytic decomposition into O2 is the most promising method to eliminate ambient O3, while the fast deactivation of catalysts under humid conditions remains the primary challenge for their application. Herein, we elaborately developed a splendidly active and stable Mn-based catalyst with double hydrophobic protection of active carbon (AC) and CeO2 (CeMn@AC), which possessed abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies and excellent desorption of peroxide intermediates (O22-). Under extremely humid (RH = 90%) conditions and a high space velocity of 1200 L h-1 g-1, the optimized CeMn@AC achieved nearly 100% O3 conversion (140 h) at 5 ppm, showing unprecedented catalytic activity and moisture resistance toward O3 decomposition. In situ DRIFTS and theory calculations confirmed that the exceptional moisture resistance of CeMn@AC was ascribed to the double protection effect of AC and CeO2, which cooperatively prevented the competitive adsorption of H2O molecules and their accumulation on the active sites of MnO2. AC provided a hydrophobic reaction environment, and CeO2 further alleviated moisture deterioration of the MnO2 particles exposed on the catalyst surface via the moisture-resistant oxygen vacancies of MnO2-CeO2 crystal boundaries. This work offers a simple and efficient strategy for designing moisture-resistant materials and facilitates the practical application of the O3 decomposition catalysts in various environments.

Variability in Microbial Communities Driven by Particulate Matter on Human Facial Skin

Microbial communities are known to play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and can be used as an indicator for assessing environmental pollution. Numerous studies have revealed that air pollution can alter the structure of microbial communities, which may increase health risks. Nevertheless, the relationships between microbial communities and particulate matter (PM) caused by air pollution in terms of health risk assessment are not well understood. This study aimed to validate the influences of PM chemical compositions on microbial communities and assess the associated health risks. Our results, based on similarity analysis, revealed that the stability structure of the microbial communities had a similarity greater than 73%. In addition, the altered richness and diversity of microbial communities were significantly associated with PM chemical compositions. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exerted a positive influence on microbial communities in different environmental variables. Additionally, a stronger linear correlation was observed between hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and the richness of microbial communities. All estimated health risks from PM chemical compositions, calculated under different environmental variables, significantly exceeded the acceptable level by a factor of more than 49. Cr and 1,2-Dibromoethane displayed dual adverse effects of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Overall, the study provides insights into the fundamental mechanisms of the variability in microbial communities driven by PM, which may support the crucial role of PM chemical compositions in the risk of microorganisms in the atmospheric environment.

Traceability and policy suggestions for ozone pollution in heavy industrial city in Northeast China

In the heavy industrial city of Northeast China, there has been a significant decrease in particulate matter pollution while experiencing a sharp increase in ozone (O3) pollution. However, the main influencing factors and source contributions to O3 remain unclear. Taking the case of Siping as an example, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics, assessed local source contributions to O3, and revealed regional transmission effects using numeric simulation and statistical methods. Temporally, higher O3 concentrations were observed in summer and the afternoon, with hourly peaks up to 254 µg/m3. Spatially, O3 pollution was mainly contributed by background concentrations (34.52%), external transport (34.50%), and local emissions (30.98%) during the case study period (June 11-18, 2021). Among the local emission sources, biological emissions, the industrial sector, and the traffic sector accounted for 35.30%, 32.09%, and 23.58% of the O3 concentration, respectively. For regional atmospheric transmission, high O3 pollution was accompanied by wind from the southwest directions, and the trajectory of air mass transport suggests that eastern Mongolia, the Korean Peninsula, and its neighboring regions contribute to O3 pollution. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis showed that O3 pollution in Siping is a co-controlled region by anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs) and NOX, which implies control in an optimal ratio of VOCs and NOX emissions. Thus, our results highlight the importance of joint prevention and control of O3 pollution in the region, optimization of biogenic landscape ecology, and control of VOCs and NOx in both the industrial and transport sectors.

Data-driven, explainable machine learning model for predicting volatile organic compounds' standard vaporization enthalpy

The accurate prediction of standard vaporization enthalpy (ΔvapHm°) for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of paramount importance in environmental chemistry, industrial applications and regulatory compliance. To overcome traditional experimental methods for predicting ΔvapHm° of VOCs, machine learning (ML) models enable a high-throughput, cost-effective property estimation. But despite a rising momentum, existing ML algorithms still present limitations in prediction accuracy and broad chemical applications. In this work, we present a data driven, explainable supervised ML model to predict ΔvapHm° of VOCs. The model was built on an established experimental database of 2410 unique molecules and 223 VOCs categorized by chemical groups. Using supervised ML regression algorithms, the Random Forest successfully predicted VOCs' ΔvapHm° with a mean absolute error of 3.02 kJ mol-1 and a 95% test score. The model was successfully validated through the prediction of ΔvapHm° for a known database of VOCs and through molecular group hold-out tests. Through chemical feature importance analysis, this explainable model revealed that VOC polarizability, connectivity indexes and electrotopological state are key for the model's prediction accuracy. We thus present a replicable and explainable model, which can be further expanded towards the prediction of other thermodynamic properties of VOCs.

Short-term exposure to air pollution on peripheral white blood cells and inflammation biomarkers: a cross-sectional study on rural residents

Effects of short-term exposure to ambient air pollution on systemic immunological and inflammatory biomarkers in rural population have not been adequately characterized. From May to July 2021, 5816 participants in rural villages of northern Henan Province, China, participated in this cross-sectional study. Blood biomarkers of systemic inflammation were determined including peripheral white blood cells (WBC), eosinophils (EOS), basophils (BAS), monocytes (MON), lymphocytes (LYM), neutrophils (NEU), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). The concentrations of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5), PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3) were assessed up to 7 days prior to the blood draw. A generalized linear model was used to analyze the associations between air pollution exposure and the above-mentioned blood biomarkers. Significantly positive associations were revealed between PM2.5, CO and WBC; CO, O3 and LYM; PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO and NEU; PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO and NLR; PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, O3 and hs-CRP. Meanwhile, negative associations were found between SO2 and WBC; PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO, or O3 and EOS; PM2.5, SO2, or CO and BAS; SO2, NO2 or O3 and MON; PM2.5, PM10, SO2, or NO2 and LYM. Moreover, men, individuals with normal body mass index (BMI), current smokers, and those older than 60 years were found vulnerable to air pollution effects. Taken together, short-term exposure to air pollution was associated with systemic inflammatory responses, providing insight into the potential mechanisms for air pollution-induced detrimental systemic effects in rural residents.

Advances on chalcogenide quantum dots-based sensors for environmental pollutants monitoring

Water contamination represents a significant ecological impact with global consequences, contributing to water scarcity worldwide. The presence of several pollutants, including heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and pathogens, in water resources underscores a pressing global concern, prompting the European Union (EU) to establish a Water Watch List to monitor the level of these substances. Nowadays, the standard methods used to detect and quantify these contaminants are mainly liquid or gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/GC-MS). While these methodologies offer precision and accuracy, they require expensive equipment and experienced technicians, and cannot be used on the field. In this context, chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs)-based sensors have emerged as promising, user-friendly, practical, and portable tools for environmental monitoring. QDs are semiconductor nanocrystals that possess excellent properties, and have demonstrated versatility across various sensor types, such as fluorescent, electrochemical, plasmonic, and colorimetric ones. This review summarizes recent advances (2019-2023) in the use of chalcogenide QDs for environmental sensing, highlighting the development of sensors capable of detect efficiently heavy metals, anions, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, endocrine disrupting compounds, organic dyes, toxic gases, nitroaromatics, and pathogens.

From Inhalation to Neurodegeneration: Air Pollution as a Modifiable Risk Factor for Alzheimer's Disease

Air pollution, a growing concern for public health, has been linked to various respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Emerging evidence also suggests a link between exposure to air pollutants and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review explores the composition and sources of air pollutants, including particulate matter, gases, persistent organic pollutants, and heavy metals. The pathophysiology of AD is briefly discussed, highlighting the role of beta-amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and genetic factors. This article also examines how air pollutants reach the brain and exert their detrimental effects, delving into the neurotoxicity of air pollutants. The molecular mechanisms linking air pollution to neurodegeneration are explored in detail, focusing on oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and protein aggregation. Preclinical studies, including in vitro experiments and animal models, provide evidence for the direct effects of pollutants on neuronal cells, glial cells, and the blood-brain barrier. Epidemiological studies have reported associations between exposure to air pollution and an increased risk of AD and cognitive decline. The growing body of evidence supporting air pollution as a modifiable risk factor for AD underscores the importance of considering environmental factors in the etiology and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, in the face of worsening global air quality.

Calibration and Inter-Unit Consistency Assessment of an Electrochemical Sensor System Using Machine Learning

This paper addresses the challenges of calibrating low-cost electrochemical sensor systems for air quality monitoring. The proliferation of pollutants in the atmosphere necessitates efficient monitoring systems, and low-cost sensors offer a promising solution. However, issues such as drift, cross-sensitivity, and inter-unit consistency have raised concerns about their accuracy and reliability. The study explores the following three calibration methods for converting sensor signals to concentration measurements: utilizing manufacturer-provided equations, incorporating machine learning (ML) algorithms, and directly applying ML to voltage signals. Experiments were performed in three urban sites in Greece. High-end instrumentation provided the reference concentrations for training and evaluation of the model. The results reveal that utilizing voltage signals instead of the manufacturer's calibration equations diminishes variability among identical sensors. Moreover, the latter approach enhances calibration efficiency for CO, NO, NO2, and O3 sensors while incorporating voltage signals from all sensors in the ML algorithm, taking advantage of cross-sensitivity to improve calibration performance. The Random Forest ML algorithm is a promising solution for calibrating similar devices for use in urban areas.

The relationship between air pollutants and preterm birth and blood routine changes in typical river valley city

OBJECTIVE

To collect maternal maternity information on preterm births in two tertiary hospitals in the urban area of Baota District, Yan'an City, from January 2018 to December 2020, to explore the long-term and short-term effects of air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3) and preterm births, and to explore changes in blood cell counts due to air pollutants.

METHODS

Daily average mass concentration data of six air pollutants in the urban area of Yan'an City from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2020 were collected from the monitoring station in Baota District, Yan'an City. Meteorological information was obtained from the Meteorological Bureau of Yan'an City, including temperature,relative humidity and wind speed for the time period. The mass concentration of air pollutants in each exposure window of pregnant women was assessed by the nearest monitoring station method, and conditional logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between air pollutants and preterm births, as well as the lagged and cumulative effects of air pollutants. Multiple linear regression was used to explore the relationship between air pollutants and blood tests after stepwise linear regression was used to determine confounders for each blood test.

RESULTS

The long-term effects of pollutants showed that PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2and CO were risk factors for preterm birth. In the two-pollutant model, PM2.5, PM10, SO2 and NO2 mixed with other pollutants were associated with preterm birth. The lagged effect showed that PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO, and CO were associated with preterm birth; the cumulative effect showed that other air pollutants except O3 were associated with preterm birth. The correlation study between air pollutants and blood indicators showed that air pollutants were correlated with leukocytes, monocytes, basophils, erythrocytes, hs-CRPand not with CRP.

CONCLUSION

Exposure to air pollutants is a risk factor for preterm birth. Exposure to air pollutants was associated with changes in leukocytes, monocytes, basophils and erythrocytes and hs-CRP.

Synergistic effects of copper and oxygen vacancies in enhancing the efficacy of partially crystalline CuMnxOy catalyst for ozone decomposition

To tackle the challenge of ground-level ozone pollution, this study proposed a potential catalytic design approach for ozone decomposition using Cu-Mn bimetallic oxide. This approach is grounded in an understanding of the intrinsic reactivity for catalyst and incorporates a novel potassium-driven low-temperature oxidation process for catalyst synthesis. The research highlights the creation of a highly reactive Cu-Mn oxide phase with extensive defect coverage, leading to significantly increased reaction rates. It also identifies the MnO2(100) facet as a crucial active phase, where oxygen vacancies simultaneously enhance O3 adsorption and decomposition, albeit with a concurrent risk of O2 poisoning due to the stabilization of adsorbed O2. Crucially, the incorporation of Cu offsets the effects of oxygen vacancies, influencing conversion rates and lessening O2 poisoning. The synergistic interplay between Cu and oxygen vacancies elevates the performance of the defect-rich Cu-Mn oxide catalyst. By combining computational and experimental methods, this study not only advances the understanding of the Cu-Mn oxide system for ozone decomposition but also contributes valuable insights into developing more efficient catalysts to mitigate ozone pollution.

Stable O3 Decomposition by Layered Double Hydroxides: The Pivotal Role of NiOOH Transformation

Because ozone (O3) is a significant air pollutant, advanced O3 elimination technologies, particularly those under high-humidity conditions, have become an essential research focus. In this study, a nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) was modified via intercalation with octanoate to develop an effective hydrophobic catalyst (NiFe-OAa-LDH) for O3 decomposition. The NiFe-OAa-LDH catalyst sustained its O3 decomposition rate of >98% for 48 h under conditions of 90% relative humidity, 840 L/(g·h) space velocity, and 100 ppm inlet O3 concentration. Moreover, it maintained a decomposition rate of 90% even when tested at a higher airflow rate of 2500 L/(g·h). Based on the changes induced by the Ni-OII to Ni-OIII bonds in NiFe-OAa-LDH during O3 treatment, catalytic O3 decomposition was proposed to occur in two stages. The first stage involved the reaction between the hydroxyl groups and O3, leading to the breakage of the O-H bonds, formation of NiOOH, and structural changes in the catalyst. This transformation resulted in the formation of abundant and stable hydrogen vacancies. According to density functional theory calculations, O3 can be effectively decomposed at the hydrogen vacancies with a low energy barrier during the second stage. This study provides new insights into O3 decomposition.

Ozonolysis of Terpene Flavor Additives in Vaping Emissions: Elevated Production of Reactive Oxygen Species and Oxidative Stress

The production of e-cigarette aerosols through vaping processes is known to cause the formation of various free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Despite the well-known oxidative potential and cytotoxicity of fresh vaping emissions, the effects of chemical aging on exhaled vaping aerosols by indoor atmospheric oxidants are yet to be elucidated. Terpenes are commonly found in e-liquids as flavor additives. In the presence of indoor ozone (O3), e-cigarette aerosols that contain terpene flavorings can undergo chemical transformations, further producing ROS and reactive carbonyl species. Here, we simulated the aging process of the e-cigarette emissions in a 2 m3 FEP film chamber with 100 ppbv of O3 exposure for an hour. The aged vaping aerosols, along with fresh aerosols, were collected to detect the presence of ROS. The aged particles exhibited 2- to 11-fold greater oxidative potential, and further analysis showed that these particles formed a greater number of radicals in aqueous conditions. The aging process induced the formation of various alkyl hydroperoxides (ROOH), and through iodometric quantification, we saw that our aged vaping particles contained significantly greater amounts of these hydroperoxides than their fresh counterparts. Bronchial epithelial cells exposed to aged vaping aerosols exhibited an upregulation of the oxidative stress genes, HMOX-1 and GSTP1, indicating the potential for inhalation toxicity. This work highlights the indirect danger of vaping in environments with high ground-level O3, which can chemically transform e-cigarette aerosols into new particles that can induce greater oxidative damage than fresh e-cigarette aerosols. Given that the toxicological characteristics of e-cigarettes are mainly associated with the inhalation of fresh aerosols in current studies, our work may provide a perspective that characterizes vaping exposure under secondhand or thirdhand conditions as a significant health risk.

Anti-Inflammatory Activity of No-Ozone Cold Plasma in Porphyromonas gingivalis Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Periodontitis Rats

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) in the oral cavity. This periodontal disease causes damage to the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone and can cause tooth loss, but there is no definite treatment yet. In this study, we investigated the possibility of using no-ozone cold plasma to safely treat periodontitis in the oral cavity. First, human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were treated with P. gingivalis-derived lipopolysaccharide (PG-LPS) to induce an inflammatory response, and then the anti-inflammatory effect of NCP was examined, and a study was conducted to identify the mechanism of action. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory effect of NCP was verified in rats that developed an inflammatory response similar to periodontitis. When NCP was applied to PG-LPS-treated HGFs, the activities of inflammatory proteins and cytokines were effectively inhibited. It was confirmed that the process of denaturing the medium by charged particles of NCP is essential for the anti-inflammatory effect of NCP. Also, it was confirmed that repeated treatment of periodontitis rats with NCP effectively reduced the inflammatory cells and osteoclast activity. As a result, this study suggests that NCP can be directly helpful in the treatment of periodontitis in the future.

The Impact of Climate Change on Immunity and Gut Microbiota in the Development of Disease

According to the definition provided by the United Nations, "climate change" describes the persistent alterations in temperatures and weather trends. These alterations may arise naturally, such as fluctuations in the solar cycle. Nonetheless, since the 19th century, human activities have emerged as the primary agent for climate change, primarily attributed to the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. Climate change can potentially influence the well-being, agricultural production, housing, safety, and employment opportunities for all individuals. The immune system is an important interface through which global climate change affects human health. Extreme heat, weather events and environmental pollutants could impair both innate and adaptive immune responses, promoting inflammation and genomic instability, and increasing the risk of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases. Moreover, climate change has an impact on both soil and gut microbiome composition, which can further explain changes in human health outcomes. This narrative review aims to explore the influence of climate change on human health and disease, focusing specifically on its effects on the immune system and gut microbiota. Understanding how these factors contribute to the development of physical and mental illness may allow for the design of strategies aimed at reducing the negative impact of climate and pollution on human health.

Geographic sources of ozone air pollution and mortality burden in Europe

Ground-level ozone (O3) is a harmful air pollutant formed in the atmosphere by the interaction between sunlight and precursor gases. Exposure to current O3 levels in Europe is a major source of premature mortality from air pollution. However, mitigation actions have been mainly designed and implemented at the national and regional scales, lacking a comprehensive assessment of the geographic sources of O3 pollution and its associated health impacts. Here we quantify both national and imported contributions to O3 and their related mortality burden across 813 contiguous regions in 35 European countries, representing about 530 million people. Imported O3 contributed to 88.3% of all O3-attributable deaths (intercountry range 83-100%). The greatest share of imported O3 had its origins outside the study domain (that is, hemispheric sources), which was responsible for 56.7% of total O3-attributable mortality (range 42.5-87.2%). It was concluded that achieving the air-quality guidelines set out by the World Health Organization and avoiding the health impacts of O3 require not only the implementation of national or coordinated pan-European actions but also global strategies.

Interaction between ozone and paternal smoking on fetal congenital heart defects among pregnant women at high risk: a multicenter maternal-fetal medicine study

BACKGROUND

Evidence remains limited on the association between maternal ozone (O3) exposure and congenital heart defects (CHDs) in offspring, and few studies have investigated the interaction and modification of paternal smoking on this association.

METHODS

Using a sample including pregnant women at high risk of fetal CHD (with metabolic disease, first-trimester viral infection, family history of CHD, etc.) from a maternal-fetal medicine study covering 1313 referral hospitals in China during 2013-2021, we examined the associations between maternal O3 exposure during 3-8 weeks of gestational age and fetal CHD in offspring and investigated the interaction and modification of paternal smoking on this association. CHD was diagnosed by fetal echocardiograms, maximum daily 8-hour average O3 exposure data at a 10 km × 10 km spatial resolution came from the Tracking Air Pollution in China dataset, and paternal smoking was collected using questionnaires. Logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

RESULTS

Among 27,834 pregnant women at high risk of fetal CHD, 17.4% of fetuses were diagnosed with CHD. Each 10 μg/m3 increase in maternal O3 exposure was associated with a 17% increased risk of CHD in offspring (OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.14-1.20). Compared with paternal nonsmoking and maternal low O3 exposure, the ORs (95% CI) of CHD for smoking and low O3 exposure, nonsmoking and high O3 exposure, and smoking and high O3 exposure were 1.25 (1.08-1.45), 1.81 (1.56-2.08), and 2.23 (1.84-2.71), respectively. Paternal smoking cessation seemingly mitigated the increased risk of CHD.

CONCLUSIONS

Maternal O3 exposure and paternal smoking were interactively associated with an increased risk of fetal CHD in offspring, which calls for effective measures to decrease maternal exposure to O3 pollution and secondhand smoke for CHD prevention.

CTNNAL1 promotes the structural integrity of bronchial epithelial cells through the RhoA/ROCK1 pathway

Adhesion molecules play critical roles in maintaining the structural integrity of the airway epithelium in airways under stress. Previously, we reported that catenin alpha-like 1 (CTNNAL1) is downregulated in an asthma animal model and upregulated at the edge of human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) after ozone stress. In this work, we explore the potential role of CTNNAL1 in the structural adhesion of HBECs and its possible mechanism. We construct a CTNNAL1 ‒/‒ mouse model with CTNNAL1-RNAi recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) in the lung and a CTNNAL1-silencing cell line stably transfected with CTNNAL1-siRNA recombinant plasmids. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining reveals that CTNNAL1 ‒/‒ mice have denuded epithelial cells and structural damage to the airway. Silencing of CTNNAL1 in HBECs inhibits cell proliferation and weakens extracellular matrix adhesion and intercellular adhesion, possibly through the action of the cytoskeleton. We also find that the expressions of the structural adhesion-related molecules E-cadherin, integrin β1, and integrin β4 are significantly decreased in ozone-treated cells than in vector control cells. In addition, our results show that the expression levels of RhoA/ROCK1 are decreased after CTNNAL1 silencing. Treatment with Y27632, a ROCK inhibitor, abolished the expressions of adhesion molecules induced by ozone in CTNNAL1-overexpressing HBECs. Overall, the findings of the present study suggest that CTNNAL1 plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity of the airway epithelium under ozone challenge, and is associated with epithelial cytoskeleton dynamics and the expressions of adhesion-related molecules via the RhoA/ROCK1 pathway.

Assessment of ground-level ozone pollution in Türkiye according to new WHO limits

Ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant and is attributable to respiratory diseases and mortality. For this reason, the World Health Organization (WHO) implemented a new long-term (peak season) limit value for ozone. The previous studies related to ozone in Türkiye were spatially limited to certain locations. In this study, annual mean and peak season ozone concentrations, and limit exceedances were investigated for Türkiye for the year 2021. Moreover, ozone peak seasons were determined for the first time for 126 air quality monitoring stations. The annual mean ozone concentration was determined as 44.3 ± 19.3 µg/m3 whereas the peak season average ozone level was 68.4 ± 27.2 µg/m3. April-September period was the most frequently observed ozone peak season. Among all stations, Erzurum Palandöken was by far the most polluted station in terms of annual mean and limit exceedances of ozone. Ankara Siteler stations have the highest rank in peak season mean. 87 and 83 stations exceeded the short-term and long-term recommendations of WHO, respectively. Four hotspot regions were revealed in terms of peak season exceedance: Adana and surrounding provinces, the surroundings of Burdur and Isparta provinces, and the northeastern and northwestern parts of Türkiye. To protect public health, WHO recommendations for 8-h and peak season limits should be immediately implemented in Turkish regulations.

Dietary fatty acids modulate oxidative stress response to air pollution but not to infection

Anthropogenic changes to the environment expose wildlife to many pollutants. Among these, tropospheric ozone is of global concern and a highly potent pro-oxidant. In addition, human activities include several other implications for wildlife, e.g., changed food availability and changed distribution of pathogens in cities. These co-occurring habitat changes may interact, thereby modulating the physiological responses and costs related to anthropogenic change. For instance, many food items associated with humans (e.g., food waste and feeders for wild birds) contain relatively more ω6-than ω3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Metabolites derived from ω6-PUFAs can enhance inflammation and oxidative stress towards a stimulus, whereas the opposite response is linked to ω3-derived metabolites. Hence, we hypothesized that differential intake of ω6-and ω3-PUFAs modulates the oxidative stress state of birds and thereby affects the responses towards pro-oxidants. To test this, we manipulated dietary ω6:ω3 ratios and ozone levels in a full-factorial experiment using captive zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Additionally, we simulated an infection, thereby also triggering the immune system's adaptive pro-oxidant release (i.e., oxidative burst), by injecting lipopolysaccharide. Under normal air conditions, the ω3-diet birds had a lower antioxidant ratio (GSH/GSSG ratio) compared to the ω6-diet birds. When exposed to ozone, however, the diet effect disappeared. Instead, ozone exposure overall reduced the total concentration of the key antioxidant glutathione (tGSH). Moreover, the birds on the ω6-rich diet had an overall higher antioxidant capacity (OXY) compared to birds fed a ω3-rich diet. Interestingly, only the immune challenge increased oxidative damage, suggesting the oxidative burst of the immune system overrides the other pro-oxidative processes, including diet. Taken together, our results show that ozone, dietary PUFAs, and infection all affect the redox-system, but in different ways, suggesting that the underlying responses are decoupled despite that they all increase pro-oxidant exposure or generation. Despite lack of apparent cumulative effect in the independent biomarkers, the combined single effects could together reduce overall cellular functioning and efficiency over time in wild birds exposed to pathogens, ozone, and anthropogenic food sources.

Accelerated aging and altered subclinical response to ozone exposure in young, healthy adults

Ozone exposure induces a myriad of adverse cardiopulmonary outcomes in humans. Although advanced age and chronic disease are factors that may exacerbate a person's negative response to ozone exposure, there are no molecular biomarkers of susceptibility. Here, we examine whether epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) is associated with responsiveness to short-term ozone exposure. Using data from a crossover-controlled exposure study (n = 17), we examined whether EAA, as measured in lung epithelial cells collected 24 h after clean air exposure, modifies the observed effect of ozone on autonomic function, cardiac electrophysiology, hemostasis, pulmonary function, and inflammation. EAA was assessed in lung epithelial cells extracted from bronchoalveolar lavage fluids, using the pan-tissue aging clock. We used two analytic approaches: (i) median regression to estimate the association between EAA and the estimated risk difference for subclinical responses to ozone and (ii) a block randomization approach to estimate EAA's effect modification of subclinical responses. For both approaches, we calculated Fisher-exact P-values, allowing us to bypass large sample size assumptions. In median regression analyses, accelerated epigenetic age modified associations between ozone and heart rate-corrected QT interval (QTc) ([Formula: see text]= 0.12, P-value = 0.007) and between ozone and C-reactive protein ([Formula: see text] = -0.18, P = 0.069). During block randomization, the directions of association remained consistent for QTc and C-reactive protein; however, the P-values weakened. Block randomization also revealed that responsiveness of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) to ozone exposure was modified by accelerated epigenetic aging (PAI-1 difference between accelerated aging-defined block groups = -0.54, P-value = 0.039). In conclusion, EAA is a potential biomarker for individuals with increased susceptibility to ozone exposure even among young, healthy adults.

Peripheral HMGB1 is linked to O3 pathology of disease-associated astrocytes and amyloid

INTRODUCTION

Ozone (O3) is an air pollutant associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. The lung-brain axis is implicated in O3-associated glial and amyloid pathobiology; however, the role of disease-associated astrocytes (DAAs) in this process remains unknown.

METHODS

The O3-induced astrocyte phenotype was characterized in 5xFAD mice by spatial transcriptomics and proteomics. Hmgb1fl/fl LysM-Cre+ mice were used to assess the role of peripheral myeloid cell high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1).

RESULTS

O3 increased astrocyte and plaque numbers, impeded the astrocyte proteomic response to plaque deposition, augmented the DAA transcriptional fingerprint, increased astrocyte-microglia contact, and reduced bronchoalveolar lavage immune cell HMGB1 expression in 5xFAD mice. O3-exposed Hmgb1fl/fl LysM-Cre+ mice exhibited dysregulated DAA mRNA markers.

DISCUSSION

Astrocytes and peripheral myeloid cells are critical lung-brain axis interactors. HMGB1 loss in peripheral myeloid cells regulates the O3-induced DAA phenotype. These findings demonstrate a mechanism and potential intervention target for air pollution-induced AD pathobiology.

HIGHLIGHTS

Astrocytes are part of the lung-brain axis, regulating how air pollution affects plaque pathology. Ozone (O3) astrocyte effects are associated with increased plaques and modified by plaque localization. O3 uniquely disrupts the astrocyte transcriptomic and proteomic disease-associated astrocyte (DAA) phenotype in plaque associated astrocytes (PAA). O3 changes the PAA cell contact with microglia and cell-cell communication gene expression. Peripheral myeloid cell high mobility group box 1 regulates O3-induced transcriptomic changes in the DAA phenotype.

Efficient ozone decomposition in high humidity environments using novel iron-doped OMS-2-loaded activated carbon material

This study effectively addresses the rapid deactivation of manganese-based catalysts in humid environments during ozone decomposition by introducing iron-doped manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (Fe-OMS-2) catalysts supported on activated carbon (AC). By optimizing the doping ratio of Fe-OMS-2, the Fe-OMS-20.5/AC catalyst achieves nearly 100% ozone decomposition efficiency across a wide range of relative humidity levels (0 to 60%), even at elevated air flow rates of 800 L·g-1·h-1, outperforming standalone AC, Fe-OMS-2, or a simple mixture of OMS-2 and AC. The Fe-OMS-20.5/AC catalyst features a porous surface and a mesoporous structure, providing a substantial specific surface area that facilitates the uniform distribution of the Fe-OMS-2 active phase on the AC surface. The incorporation of Fe3+ ions enhances electron transfer between valence state transitions of Mn, thereby improving the catalyst's efficiency in ozone decomposition. Additionally, the AC component protects catalytic sites and enhances the catalyst's humidity resistance. In conclusion, this research presents a novel strategy for developing highly efficient and cost-effective ozone decomposition catalysts that enhance dehumidification, significantly contributing to industrial ozone treatment technologies and advancing environmental protection.

Evidence shows a strong link between climate change and its effects on asthma. Healthcare professionals must be educated to advocate for and lead effective strategies to reduce the health risks of climate change.

Associations of ambient ozone exposure and CD4+ T cell levels with mortality among people living with HIV: An eight-year longitudinal study

There has been a consistent upward trend in ground-level ozone (O3) concentration in China. People living with HIV (PLWH) may be more vulnerable to the health impacts of O3 exposure due to their immunosuppressed state. This study aims to investigate the association between ambient O3 exposure and mortality among PLWH, as well as the potential exacerbating effects of a decreased CD4+ T cell level. Daily maximum 8-hour O3 concentrations were assigned to 7270 PLWH at a county level in Guangxi, China. Every 10-unit increase in ambient O3 concentration was associated with a significant rise in all-cause mortality ranging from 7.3 % to 28.7 % and a significant rise in AIDS-related mortality ranging from 8.4 % to 14.5 %. When PLWH had a higher CD4+ count (≥350 cells/μL), elevated O3 concentration was associated with increased blood CD4+ count at lag0 [percent change with 95 % confidence interval, 0.20(0.00, 0.40)], lag1 [0.26(0.06, 0.47)], and lag2 [0.23(0.03, 0.44)]; however, an opposite association was observed when CD4+ count was <350 cells/μL for half-year average [-2.45(-4.71, -0.14)] and yearly average [-3.42(-5.51, -1.29)] of O3 exposure. The association of O3 exposure with all-cause and AIDS-related mortality was more prominent among those with higher CD4+ count. Exploratory analysis revealed possible associations between O3 exposure and respiratory infections and clinical symptoms. These findings suggest potential synergistic effects between a compromised immune status and elevated O3 exposure levels on mortality risk among PLWH. Ambient O3 exposure should be considered as an emerging mortality risk factor for PLWH in the era of antiretroviral therapy, requiring further attention from researchers and healthcare professionals.

Elevated ozone disrupts mating boundaries in drosophilid flies

Animals employ different strategies to establish mating boundaries between closely related species, with sex pheromones often playing a crucial role in identifying conspecific mates. Many of these pheromones have carbon-carbon double bonds, making them vulnerable to oxidation by certain atmospheric oxidant pollutants, including ozone. Here, we investigate whether increased ozone compromises species boundaries in drosophilid flies. We show that short-term exposure to increased levels of ozone degrades pheromones of Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, D. mauritiana, as well as D. sechellia, and induces hybridization between some of these species. As many of the resulting hybrids are sterile, this could result in local population declines. However, hybridization between D. simulans and D. mauritiana as well as D. simulans and D. sechellia results in fertile hybrids, of which some female hybrids are even more attractive to the males of the parental species. Our experimental findings indicate that ozone pollution could potentially induce breakdown of species boundaries in insects.

A toxicological perspective on climate change and the exposome

Climate change is accompanied by changes in the exposome, including increased heat, ground-level ozone, and other air pollutants, infectious agents, pollens, and psychosocial stress. These exposures alter the internal component of the exposome and account for some of the health effects of climate change. The adverse outcome pathways describe biological events leading to an unfavorable health outcome. In this perspective study, I propose to use this toxicological framework to better describe the biological steps linking a stressor associated with climate change to an adverse outcome. Such a framework also allows for better identification of possible interactions between stressors related to climate change and others, such as chemical pollution. More generally, I call for the incorporation of climate change as part of the exposome and for improved identification of the biological pathways involved in its health effects.

Green Synthesis of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Based on a Novel Thiophene-Derivative for Electrochemical Sensing

An environmentally friendly and sustainable approach was adopted to produce a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) via electropolymerization, with remarkable electrochemical sensing properties, tested in tyrosine (tyr) detection. The 2,2'-bis(2,2'-bithiophene-5-yl)-3,3'-bithianaphtene (BT2-T4) was chosen as functional monomer and MIP electrosynthesis was carried out via cyclic voltammetry on low-volume (20 μL) screen-printed carbon electrodes (C-SPE) in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ((BMIM) TFSI). An easy and rapid washing treatment allowed us to obtain the resulting MIP film, directly used for tyr electrochemical detection, carried out amperometrically. The sensor showed a linear response in the concentration range of 15-200 μM, with LOD of 1.04 µM, LOQ of 3.17 μM and good performance in selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. Tyrosine amperometric detection was also carried out in human plasma, resulting in a satisfactory recovery estimation. The work represents the first use of BT2-T4 as a functional monomer for the production of a molecularly imprinted polymer, with a green approach afforded by using a few microliters of a room temperature ionic liquid as an alternative to common organic solvents on screen-printed carbon electrodes, resulting in a valuable system that meets the green chemistry guidelines, which is today an essential criterion in both research and application field.

Analysis of human health effects under ozone exposure in the oasis area of Hetao Plain

This article, based on OMI data products, utilizes spatial distribution, ozone-sensitive control areas, Pearson correlation methods, and the Ben-MAP model to study the changes in ozone column concentration from 2018 to 2022, along with the influencing factors and the health of populations exposed to ozone. The findings suggest a spatial variation in the ozone column concentration within the study area, with an increasing trend observed from west to east and from south to north. Over time, the ozone column concentration exhibits an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease, with the peak concentration observed in 2019 at 37.45 DU and the nadir recorded in 2022 at 33.10 DU. The monthly mean distribution exhibits an inverted V-shaped pattern during the warm season from April to September, with a peak in July (46.71 DU) and a trough in April (35.29 DU). The Hetao Plain Oasis area is primarily a NOx control area in sensitive control areas. The concentrations of O3 and precursor HCHO exhibited significant positive correlations with vegetation index and air temperature, while showing significant negative correlations with wind speed and air pressure. The precursor NO2, in contrast, exhibited a significant negative correlation with both the vegetation index and relative humidity. Based on the ground-based monitoring sites and analysis of human health benefits, the study area witnessed 1944.45 deaths attributed to warm season O3 exposure in 2018, with a subsequent reduction in premature deaths by 149.7, 588.2, and 231.75 for the years 2019 to 2021 respectively when compared to the baseline year. In 2021, the observed decrease in warm-season O3 concentration within that region compared to 2018 resulted in a significant reduction, leading to the prevention of 126 premature deaths.

Biodiversity and human health: A scoping review and examples of underrepresented linkages

Mounting evidence supports the connections between exposure to environmental typologies(such as green and blue spaces)and human health. However, the mechanistic links that connect biodiversity (the variety of life) and human health, and the extent of supporting evidence remain less clear. Here, we undertook a scoping review to map the links between biodiversity and human health and summarise the levels of associated evidence using an established weight of evidence framework. Distinct from other reviews, we provide additional context regarding the environment-microbiome-health axis, evaluate the environmental buffering pathway (e.g., biodiversity impacts on air pollution), and provide examples of three under- or minimally-represented linkages. The examples are (1) biodiversity and Indigenous Peoples' health, (2) biodiversity and urban social equity, and (3) biodiversity and COVID-19. We observed a moderate level of evidence to support the environmental microbiota-human health pathway and a moderate-high level of evidence to support broader nature pathways (e.g., greenspace) to various health outcomes, from stress reduction to enhanced wellbeing and improved social cohesion. However, studies of broader nature pathways did not typically include specific biodiversity metrics, indicating clear research gaps. Further research is required to understand the connections and causative pathways between biodiversity (e.g., using metrics such as taxonomy, diversity/richness, structure, and function) and health outcomes. There are well-established frameworks to assess the effects of broad classifications of nature on human health. These can assist future research in linking biodiversity metrics to human health outcomes. Our examples of underrepresented linkages highlight the roles of biodiversity and its loss on urban lived experiences, infectious diseases, and Indigenous Peoples' sovereignty and livelihoods. More research and awareness of these socioecological interconnections are needed.

Exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) at Nigeria's petrol stations: a review of current status, challenges and future directions

Introduction

In Nigeria, because of increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, and auto-mobilization, petrol is the most everyday non-edible commodity, and it is the leading petroleum product traded at the proliferating Nigeria's petrol stations (NPSs). However, because of inadequate occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory measures, working at NPSs exposes petrol station workers (PSWs) to a large amount of hazardous benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds.

Methods

Studies on BTEX exposures among Nigerian PSWs are scarce. Thus, constraints in quantifying the health risks of BTEX limit stakeholders' ability to design practical risk assessment and risk control strategies. This paper reviews studies on the OHS of Nigerian PSWs at the NPSs.

Results

Although knowledge, attitude, and practices on OHS in NPSs vary from one Nigeria's study setting to another, generally, safety practices, awareness about hazards and personal protective equipment (PPE), and the use of PPE among PSWs fell below expectations. Additionally, air quality at NPSs was poor, with a high content of BTEX and levels of carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, and formaldehyde higher than the World Health Organization guideline limits.

Discussion

Currently, regulatory bodies' effectiveness and accountability in safeguarding OHS at NPSs leave much to be desired. Understanding the OHS of NPSs would inform future initiatives, policies, and regulations that would promote the health and safety of workers at NPSs. However, further studies need to be conducted to describe the vulnerability of PSWs and other Nigerians who are occupationally exposed to BTEX pollution. More importantly, controlling air pollution from hazardous air pollutants like BTEX is an essential component of OHS and integral to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3, 7, and 11.

TRPA1-PI3K/Akt-OPA1-ferroptosis axis in ozone-induced bronchial epithelial cell and lung injury

BACKGROUND

Transient receptor potential (TRP) ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) could mediate ozone-induced lung injury. Optic Atrophy 1 (OPA1) is one of the significant mitochondrial fusion proteins. Impaired mitochondrial fusion, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction and ferroptosis, may drive the onset and progression of lung injury. In this study, we examined whether TRPA1 mediated ozone-induced bronchial epithelial cell and lung injury by activating PI3K/Akt with the involvement of OPA1, leading to ferroptosis.

METHODS

Wild-type, TRPA1-knockout (KO) mice (C57BL/6 J background) and ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1)-pretreated mice were exposed to 2.5 ppm ozone for 3 h. Human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells were treated with 1 ppm ozone for 3 h in the presence of TRPA1 inhibitor A967079 or TRPA1-knockdown (KD) as well as pharmacological modulators of PI3K/Akt-OPA1-ferroptosis. Transcriptome was used to screen and decipher the differential gene expressions and pathways. Oxidative stress, inflammation and ferroptosis were measured together with mitochondrial morphology, function and dynamics.

RESULTS

Acute ozone exposure induced airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), reduced mitochondrial fusion, and enhanced ferroptosis in mice. Similarly, acute ozone exposure induced inflammatory responses, altered redox responses, abnormal mitochondrial structure and function, reduced mitochondrial fusion and enhanced ferroptosis in BEAS-2B cells. There were increased mitochondrial fusion, reduced inflammatory responses, decreased redox responses and ferroptosis in ozone-exposed TRPA1-KO mice and Fer-1-pretreated ozone-exposed mice. A967079 and TRPA1-KD enhanced OPA1 and prevented ferroptosis through the PI3K/Akt pathway in BEAS-2B cells. These in vitro results were further confirmed in pharmacological modulator experiments.

CONCLUSION

Exposure to ozone induces mitochondrial dysfunction in human bronchial epithelial cells and mouse lungs by activating TRPA1, which results in ferroptosis mediated via a PI3K/Akt/OPA1 axis. This supports a potential role of TRPA1 blockade in preventing the deleterious effects of ozone.

Real-Time Monitoring of Air Pollution Health Impacts Using Breath-Borne Gaseous Biomarkers from Rats

Offline techniques are adopted for studying air pollution health impacts, thus failing to provide in situ observations. Here, we have demonstrated their real-time monitoring by online analyzing an array of gaseous biomarkers from rats' exhaled breath using an integrated exhaled breath array sensor (IEBAS) developed. The biomarkers include total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), CO2, CO, NO, H2S, H2O2, O2, and NH3. Specific breath-borne VOCs were also analyzed by a gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometer (GC-IMS). After real-life ambient air pollution exposures (2 h), the pollution levels of PM2.5 and O3 were both found to significantly affect the relative levels of multiple gaseous biomarkers in rats' breath. Eleven biomarkers, especially NO, H2S, and 1-propanol, were detected as significantly correlated with PM2.5 concentration, while heptanal was shown to be significantly correlated with O3. Likewise, significant changes were also detected in multiple breath-borne biomarkers from rats under lab-controlled O3 exposures with levels of 150, 300, and 1000 μg/m3 (2 h), compared to synthetic air exposure. Importantly, heptanal was experimentally confirmed as a reliable biomarker for O3 exposure, with a notable dose-response relationship. In contrast, conventional biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in rat sera exhibited insignificant differences after the 2 h exposures. The results imply that breath-borne gaseous biomarkers can serve as an early and sensitive indicator for ambient pollutant exposure. This work pioneered a new research paradigm for online monitoring of air pollution health impacts while obtaining important candidate biomarker information for PM2.5 and O3 exposures.

Machine learning and XAI approaches highlight the strong connection between O 3 and N O 2 pollutants and Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia with millions of affected patients worldwide. Currently, there is still no cure and AD is often diagnosed long time after onset because there is no clear diagnosis. Thus, it is essential to study the physiology and pathogenesis of AD, investigating the risk factors that could be strongly connected to the disease onset. Despite AD, like other complex diseases, is the result of the combination of several factors, there is emerging agreement that environmental pollution should play a pivotal role in the causes of disease. In this work, we implemented an Artificial Intelligence model to predict AD mortality, expressed as Standardized Mortality Ratio, at Italian provincial level over 5 years. We employed a set of publicly available variables concerning pollution, health, society and economy to feed a Random Forest algorithm. Using methods based on eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) we found that air pollution (mainly O 3 and N O 2 ) contribute the most to AD mortality prediction. These results could help to shed light on the etiology of Alzheimer's disease and to confirm the urgent need to further investigate the relationship between the environment and the disease.

Ozone exposure affects corneal epithelial fate by promoting mtDNA leakage and cGAS/STING activation

Ozone is a common air pollutant associated with various human diseases. The human ocular surface is frequently exposed to ozone in the troposphere, but the mechanisms by which ozone affects the ocular surface health remain unclear. This study aimed to establish a mouse model to investigate the effects of ozone exposure on the ocular surface and the corneal epithelium. The findings revealed that ozone exposure disrupted corneal epithelial homeostasis and differentiation, resulting in corneal squamous metaplasia. Further, ozone exposure induced oxidative damage and cytoplasmic leakage of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), thereby activating the cGAS/STING signaling pathway. The activation of the cGAS/STING signaling pathway triggered the activation of downstream NF-κB and TRAF6 signaling pathways, causing corneal inflammation, thereby promoting corneal inflammation and squamous metaplasia. Finally, C-176, a selective STING inhibitor, effectively prevented and treated corneal inflammation and squamous metaplasia caused by ozone exposure. This study revealed the role of mtDNA leakage-mediated cGAS/STING activation in corneal squamous epithelial metaplasia caused by ozone exposure. It also depicted the abnormal expression pattern of corneal epithelial keratin using three-dimensional images, providing new targets and strategies for preventing and treating corneal squamous metaplasia and other ocular surface diseases.

Vertical Evolution of Ozone Formation Sensitivity Based on Synchronous Vertical Observations of Ozone and Proxies for Its Precursors: Implications for Ozone Pollution Prevention Strategies

Photochemical ozone (O3) formation in the atmospheric boundary layer occurs at both the surface and elevated altitudes. Therefore, the O3 formation sensitivity is needed to be evaluated at different altitudes before formulating an effective O3 pollution prevention and control strategy. Herein, we explore the vertical evolution of O3 formation sensitivity via synchronous observations of the vertical profiles of O3 and proxies for its precursors, formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), using multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) in urban areas of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and Pearl River Delta (PRD) regions in China. The sensitivity thresholds indicated by the HCHO/NO2 ratio (FNR) varied with altitude. The VOC-limited regime dominated at the ground level, whereas the contribution of the NOx-limited regime increased with altitude, particularly on heavily polluted days. The NOx-limited and transition regimes played more important roles throughout the entire boundary layer than at the surface. The feasibility of extreme NOx reduction to mitigate the extent of the O3 pollution was evaluated using the FNR-O3 curve. Based on the surface sensitivity, the critical NOx reduction percentage for the transition from a VOC-limited to a NOx-limited regime is 45-72%, which will decrease to 27-61% when vertical evolution is considered. With the combined effects of clean air action and carbon neutrality, O3 pollution in the YRD and PRD regions will transition to the NOx-limited regime before 2030 and be mitigated with further NOx reduction.

Investigation on ozone formation mechanism and control strategy of VOCs in petrochemical region: Insights from chemical reactivity and photochemical loss

To investigate disparities in VOCs pollution characteristics, O3 generation activity, and source apportionment outcomes resulting from photooxidation, online monitoring of 106 VOCs was conducted in Jinshan District, Shanghai from April to October 2020. The observed VOCs concentrations (VOCs-obs) were 47.1 ppbv and 59.2 ppbv for clear days (CD) and O3-polluted days (OPD), respectively. The increase in daytime concentrations of alkenes is a significant factor contributing to the enhanced atmospheric photochemical activity during the OPD period, corroborated by VOCs-loss, ozone formation potential (OFP), propy-equiv concentration, and LOH. The sensitivity analysis of O3-NOx-VOCs indicated that O3 formation was in a transitional regime towards NOx-limited conditions. The results of positive matrix factorization (PMF) demonstrated that refining and petrochemicals (20.8-25.0 %), along with oil and gas evaporation (15.6-16.7 %) were the main sources of VOCs concentrations. Notably, source apportionment based on VOCs-obs underestimated the contributions from sources of reactive components. It is worth highlighting that the sunlight impact & background source was identified as the major contributor to LOH (21.6 %) and OFP (25.3 %), signifying its significant role in O3 formation. This study reiterates the importance of controlling reactive VOC components to mitigate O3 pollution and provides a scientific foundation for air quality management, with emphasis on priority species and controlling sources.
