An Updated Review of Toxicity Effect of the Rare Earth Elements (REEs) on Aquatic Organisms

Toxicity of rare earth elements (REEs) to marine organisms: Using species sensitivity distributions to establish water quality guidelines for protecting marine life

A lack of chronic rare earth element (REE) toxicity data for marine organisms has impeded the establishment of numerical REE water quality benchmarks (e.g., guidelines) to protect marine life and assess ecological risk. This study determined the chronic no (significant) effect concentrations (N(S)ECs) and median-effect concentrations (EC50s) of eight key REEs (yttrium (Y), lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), gadolinium (Gd), dysprosium (Dy) and lutetium (Lu)) for 30 coastal marine organisms (encompassing 22 phyla and five trophic levels from temperate and tropical habitats). Organisms with calcifying life stages were most vulnerable to REEs, which competitively inhibit calcium uptake. The most sensitive organism was a sea urchin, with N(S)ECs ranging from 0.64 μg/L for Y to 1.9 μg/L for La and Pr, and EC50s ranging from 4.3 μg/L for Y to 14.4 μg/L for Pr. Conversely, the least sensitive organism was a cyanobacterium, with N(S)ECs ranging from 121 μg/L for Y to 469 μg/L for Pr, and EC50s ranging from 889 μg/L for Y to 3000 μg/L for Pr. Median sensitivity varied 215-fold across all organisms. The two-fold difference in median toxicity (μmol/L EC50) among REEs (Y ∼ Gd > Lu ∼ Nd ∼ Dy ∼ Ce > La ∼ Pr) was attributed to offset differences in binding affinity (log K) to cell surface receptors and the percentage of free metal ion (REE3+) in the test waters. The toxicity (EC50) of the remaining REEs (samarium, europium, terbium, holmium, thulium and ytterbium) was predicted using a combination of physicochemical data and measured EC50s for the eight tested REEs, with good agreement between predicted and measured EC50s for selected organisms. Numerical REE water quality guidelines to protect marine life were established using species sensitivity distributions (e.g., for 95 % species protection, values ranged from 1.1 μg/L for Y to 3.0 μg/L for La, Pr or Lu).

Rare earth elements and warming: Implications for adult mussel health and sperm quality

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of europium (Eu) exposure (10 μg/L), warming (a 4 °C increase), and their combination on Mytilus galloprovincialis. Biochemical and histopathological changes in adult mussels were evaluated after a 28-day exposure period. Additionally, biochemical and physiological alterations in sperm were measured following a 30-min exposure period. The overall responses to each treatment were assessed using the Integrated Biological Response index version 2 (IBRv2). In adult mussels, warming elevated metabolism and activated glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), leading to redox imbalance and cellular damage. Europium exposure alone slightly enhanced metabolism and GSTs activity, resulting in cellular damage and histopathological injuries in digestive tubules. The combined exposure to Eu and warming was the most detrimental treatment for adults, as indicated by the highest IBRv2 value. This treatment slightly increased metabolism and uniquely elevated the activity of antioxidant enzymes, as well as GSTs and carboxylesterases. Despite these responses, they were inadequate to prevent redox imbalance, cellular damage, and histopathological injuries in digestive tubules and gills. Regarding sperm, warming reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production but raised lipid peroxidation levels. Sperm exposed to this treatment also increased their oxygen consumption and exhibited reduced velocity. The IBRv2 indicated that Eu was the most harmful treatment for sperm, significantly increasing ROS production and notably decreasing sperm velocity. When combined with warming, Eu elevated superoxide anion (O2-) production, lowered sperm velocity, and increased oxygen consumption. This study underscores the importance of investigating the effects of rare earth elements and their interaction with climate change-related factors.

A review of greener approaches for rare earth elements recovery from mineral wastes

The use of rare earth elements (REE) in many various fields, including high-tech products, increases the demand for these materials day by day. The production of REE from primary sources has expanded in response to increasing demand; however, due to its limited, a more sustainable supply is also started to offer for the REE demand by using secondary sources. The most commonly used metallurgical method for REE recovery is hydrometallurgical processes. However, it has some disadvantages, like pyrometallurgical methods. In the review, studies of the environmental impacts of REE production from primary sources and life cycle assessments of products containing REE were investigated. According to the results, it has been seen that those studies in the literature in which hydrometallurgical methods have changed to more environmentally friendly approaches have begun to increase. In this review, mine wastes, which are secondary sources, were defined, conventional methods of recovery of rare earth elements were discussed, greener approaches to the recovery of REE from these sources were comprehensively examined and studies in the literature were evaluated. Furthermore, it was stated that there are limited studies on green approaches and REE recovery from mineral wastes and that this field is developing with an emphasis on the current outlook and future perspectives.

Into the deep: Exploring the molecular mechanisms of hyperactive behaviour induced by three rare earth elements in early life-stages of the deep-sea scavenging amphipod Tmetonyx cicada (Lysianassidae)

With increasing socio-economic importance of the rare earth elements and yttrium (REY), Norway has laid out plans for REY mining, from land-based to deep-sea mining, thereby enhancing REY mobility in the marine ecosystem. Little is known about associated environmental consequences, especially in the deep ocean. We explored the toxicity and modes of action of a light (Nd), medium (Gd) and heavy (Yb) REY-Cl3 at four concentrations (3, 30, 300, and 3000 μg L-1) in the Arcto-boreal deep-sea amphipod Tmetonyx cicada. At the highest concentration, REY solubility was limited and increased with atomic weight (Nd < Gd < Yb). Lethal effects were practically restricted to this treatment, with the lighter elements being more acutely toxic than Yb (from ∼50 % mortality in the Gd-group at dissolved 689-504 μg L-1 to <20 % in the Yb-group at ca. 2000 μg L-1), which could be a function of bioavailability. All three REY induced hyperactivity at the low-medium concentrations. Delving into the transcriptome of T. cicada allowed us to determine a whole array of potential (neurotoxic) mechanisms underlying this behaviour. Gd induced the vastest response, affecting serotonin-synthesis; sphingolipid-synthesis; the renin-angiotensin system; mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum functioning (Gd, Nd); and lysosome integrity (Gd, Yb); as well as the expression of hemocyanin, potentially governing REY-uptake (Gd, Yb). While Nd and Yb shared only few pathways, suggesting a link between mode of action and atomic weight/radius, almost all discussed mechanisms imply the disruption of organismal Ca-homeostasis. Despite only fragmental genomic information available for crustaceans to date, our results provide novel insight into the toxicophysiology of REY in marine biota. The neurotoxic/behavioural effects in T. cicada at concentrations with potential environmental relevance warn about the possibility of bottom-up ecological consequences in mining exposed fjords and deep-sea ecosystems, calling for follow-up studies and regulatory measures prior to the onset of REY mining in Norway.

Acute and chronic toxicity of rare earth elements-enriched sediments from a prospective mining area: Effects on life history traits, behavioural and physiological responses of Gammarus fossarum (Crustacea Amphipoda)

Rare earth elements (REE) have an essential role and growing importance in the world's economy. They are attracting interest from society, policymakers, and scientists. The rapidly growing global demand for REE in several strategic industrial and agricultural sectors led many countries to consider the (re)-opening of mining activities for REE extraction. Hence, their increasing use led to the disruption of their biogeochemical cycles with anthropic abnormalities already observed in aquatic ecosystems. Nonetheless, REE remain less studied, and their mechanisms of toxicity actions are not fully understood. As amphipods, Gammarus fossarum represent an important part of the aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblage and are generally used in ecotoxicological studies for their high ecological relevance. However, their use for the study of REE effects has been rather limited so far. The current study aims to assess the potential effects of two naturally REE-enriched sediments (N2 and B4) on G. fossarum. Effects on life history traits, behavioural and physiological responses have been evaluated. Exposing G. fossarum males for 72h to sediments N2 and B4 led to a decrease in haemolymph osmolality and locomotion while an increase in ventilatory activity was observed. Exposing G. fossarum pre-copula pairs with females at the same reproductive stage to the naturally REE-enriched sediments, for one moult cycle duration (∼30 days) showed that sediment B4 led to i) a significant uptake of REE, ii) a significant decrease in the proportion of females with oocytes and iii) a significant reduction in the total number of juveniles. The physicochemical analyses of sediments showed that B4 contains the highest amount of REE with a higher proportion of light REE. The present study gives the first insights into the potential toxicity of REE on G. fossarum as they may have deleterious effects on G. fossarum population's dynamics, which may alter the functioning of aquatic ecosystems.

Rare earth metallic elements in plants: assessing benefits, risks and mitigating strategies

Rare earth elements (REEs) comprises of a uniform group of lanthanides and scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) finding their key importance in agriculture sectors, electronic and defense industries, and renewable energy production. The immense application of REEs as plant growth promoters has led to their undesirable accumulation in the soil system raising concerns for REE pollution as upcoming stresses. This review mainly addresses the chemistry of REEs, uptake and distribution and their biphasic responses in plant systems and possible plausible techniques that could mitigate/alleviate REE contamination. It extends beyond the present understanding of the biphasic impacts of rare earth elements (REEs) on physio-biochemical attributes. It not only provides landmarks for further exploration of the interrelated phytohormonal and molecular biphasic nature but also introduces novel approaches aimed at mitigating their toxicities. By delving into innovative strategies such as recycling, substitution, and phytohormone-assisted mitigation, the review expands upon existing knowledge of REEs whilst also offering pathways to tackle the challenges associated with REE utilization.

Levels of rare earth elements on three abandoned mining sites of bauxite in southern Italy: A comparison between TXRF and ICP-MS

The essential utilization of rare earth elements (REEs) for the production of several electronic devices is making the demand for them being increased all the time. This extensive use of these elements has also increased concern about human and environmental health. Previous studies have shown that REE levels are higher in environmental samples near mining sites, and they are highly possible to be transferred to biota. In this study, REE levels were determined in environmental samples collected from three abandoned mining sites of bauxite (Gargano, Otranto, and Spinazzola) in the region of Puglia, Southern Italy. The samples were digested and analyzed by two different techniques, Total X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) to investigate which technique is the most suitable for analysis of the REE content in samples from abandoned mining sites of bauxite. Only 6 REEs could be detected by TXRF, while all REEs were detected in all the samples by ICP-MS. Spinazzola is the richest site and Ce the most abundant REE in all three regions. REE levels are correlated between the soil and biota samples in many cases, although the calculation of the bioconcentration factor showed that REEs are not bioaccumulative. ICP-MS seems to be a more suitable technique for analysis of the whole REE content in environmental samples from abandoned mining sites of bauxite.

Synergistic Antioxidant Effects of Cysteine Derivative and Sm-Cluster for Food Applications

The incorporation of antioxidants in food products is essential to prevent or delay deterioration, thereby addressing food spoilage. Thiol compounds, recognized for their natural antioxidant properties, are widely used in various foods; however, their antioxidant capacity is often limited. This study investigates the potential enhancement of thiol antioxidant capacity through the addition of a soluble, low-toxic inorganic Sm-cluster. Our findings demonstrate that the Sm-cluster significantly bolsters the antioxidant efficacy of thiol compounds. We explored, for the first time, the in vitro antioxidant activities of an Sm-oxo/hydroxy cluster combined with a cysteine derivative for potential food applications. The composition exhibited a robust inhibition of aromatic aldehyde flavor compound oxidation and displayed strong, dose-dependent DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazine) radical scavenging activity. Notably, the antioxidant activity of the Sm-cluster/cysteine derivative was further enhanced under strong visible light conditions, which typically increased the likelihood of oxidation. These results suggest that the combination of inorganic cluster and thiol compounds presents a promising natural alternative to traditional antioxidants in the food industry.

Development of Broad-Range Microbial Minimal Culture Medium for Lanthanide Studies

Rare Earth Elements (REE), also known as Lanthanides (Ln3+), are a group of 17 elements showing peculiar physical and chemical properties. Unlike technological applications, very little is known about the physiological role and toxicity of Ln3+ on biological systems, in particular on microorganisms (e.g., bacteria), which represent the most abundant domains on our planet. Up to now, very limited studies have been conducted due to Ln3+ precipitation with some anions commonly present in the culture media. Therefore, the development of a minimal medium is essential to allow the study of Ln3+-microbial interactions, limiting considerably the precipitation of insoluble salts. In this regard, a new minimal culture medium capable of solubilizing large amounts of Ln3+ and allowing the growth of different microbial taxa was successfully developed. Assays have shown that the medium is capable of solubilizing Ln3+ up to 100 times more than other common culture media and allowing the growth of 63 bacteria and 5 fungi. The kinetic growth of one yeast and one Gram-positive bacterium has been defined, proving to support superior growth and biomass compared to other commonly used minimal media. Moreover, the sensitivity and uptake/absorption of a Bacillus stratosphericus strain were tested, highlighting its capability to tolerate concentrations up to 10 mM of either Cerium, Gadolinium or Lanthanum and accumulate different quantities of the three.

Fish 3D Locomotion app: a user-friendly computer application package for automatic data calculation and endpoint extraction for novel tank behavior in fish

This paper introduces the Fish 3D Locomotion app (F3LA), a Python-based, Graphical User Interface (GUI)-equipped tool designed to automate behavioral endpoint extraction in zebrafish locomotion assays. Building on our previous work, which utilized a specialized aquatic tank with a mirror and a single camera for fish movement tracking in three dimensions, F3LA significantly enhances data processing efficiency. Its accuracy was tested by reanalyzing and comprehensively comparing the calculated data with the previously published data from prior publications. From the comparison results, 90% of endpoints showed a similar statistical difference result. These minor differences were due to the different starting points for the dataset and updated calculation formulas that are implemented in F3LA. In addition, shoaling area or shoaling volume calculations are also included in F3LA as a new feature that can serve as sensitive indicators of social cohesion, group dynamics, or stress responses, offering insights into neuropsychological conditions or the effects of pharmacological interventions. Furthermore, F3LA offers a marked improvement over manual operations, being at least five times faster, while maintaining consistent accuracy as it reduces human-induced errors, ensuring a higher degree of reliability in the results. Finally, the potency of F3LA was tested to evaluate the toxicities of 14 rare earth elements (REEs) to the adult zebrafish behaviors. Based on the results, our findings suggested that each tested REE altered fish behaviors in different patterns and magnitudes to each other. However, among the tested light rare earth elements (LREEs), neodymium was demonstrated to cause more relatively severe behavior alterations than other LREEs, indicated by the statistically higher value of entropy (0.2695 ± 0.04977 (mean with a standard deviation)) than the control group (0.2352 ± 0.05896). Meanwhile, in terms of heavy rare earth elements (HREEs), erbium seemed to lead to more distinct behavior toxicities than other HREEs, which was shown by the statistically lower level of fractal dimension (2.022 ± 0.3412) than the untreated group (2.255 ± 0.1661). Taken together, F3LA's development marks a significant advance in high-throughput toxicological and pharmacological assessments in zebrafish, leveraging three-dimensional locomotion data for a more comprehensive analysis of fish behavior performance, providing a significant contribution to research in various fields.

pH-Responsive Biocompatible Fluorescent Hydrogel for Selective Sensing and Adsorptive Recovery of Dysprosium

The elevated accumulation of electronic wastes, especially containing Dysprosium ion [i.e., Dy(III)], is emerging as a potential environmental threat. To overcome the deleterious effects of Dy(III), detection and removal of Dy(III) is crucial. Moreover, recovery of high-value Dy(III) is economically beneficial. However, the availability of a single material, capable of sensing Dy(III) in nanomolar concentration and simultaneously adsorbing it with high adsorption capacity (AC), is rare. Therefore, to solve this problem, a pH-responsive fluorescent amino graphene oxide-impregnated-engineered polymer hydrogel (AGO-EPH) has been synthesized, suitable for selective sensing of Dy(III) in nanomolar concentration and adsorbing it from wastewater at ambient temperature. This terpolymeric hydrogel is synthesized from two nonfluorescent monomers, propenoic acid (PNA) and prop-2-enamide (PEAM), along with an in situ generated comonomer (3-acrylamidopropanoic acid/AAPPA) through N-H activation during polymerization. Surface properties and structural details of AGO-EPH are established using NMR, FTIR, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, Raman, MALDI-mass, and DLS studies. The AGO-EPH exhibits blue fluorescence with selective turn-off sensing of Dy(III) with the detection limit of 1.88 × 10-7 (M). The maximum AC of AGO-EPH is 41.97 ± 0.39 mg g-1. The developed AGO-EPH shows consistent adsorption-desorption property over five cycles, with more than 90% desorption efficiency per cycle, confirming significant recovery of the valuable Dy(III). From Logic gate calculations, complexation of Dy(III) and AGO-EPH may be the reason behind fluorescence quenching. The AGO-EPH also shows antibacterial action against ∼3 × 108 cells mL-1 of E. coli solution. Overall, the developed pH-responsive engineered hydrogel can be used as a potential low-cost sensing device and reusable adsorbent for Dy(III).

Exploring Rare Earth Element behavior in the Mount Etna volcanic aquifers (Sicily)

This study presents the first data on REY (Rare Earth Elements plus Yttrium) in the aquifer of Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). Patterns normalized to chondrites indicate strong water-rock interaction, facilitated by a slightly acidic pH resulting from the dissolution of magma-derived CO2. REY patterns provide insights into the processes of both mineral dissolution and the formation of secondary phases. The relative abundance of light to heavy rare earth elements is compatible with the prevailing dissolution of ferromagnesian minerals (e.g., olivine or clinopyroxenes), reinforced by its strong correlation with other proxies of mineral dissolution (e.g., Mg contents). Pronounced negative Ce anomalies and positive Y anomalies demonstrate an oxidizing environment with continuous formation of secondary iron and/or manganese oxides and hydroxides. The Y/Ho fractionation is strongly influenced by metal complexation with bicarbonate complexes, a common process in C-rich waters. In the studied system, the measured REY contents are always below the limits proposed by Sneller et al. (2000, RIVM report, Issue 601,501, p. 66) for surface water and ensure a very low daily intake from drinking water.

Biochemical and biophysical interaction of rare earth elements with biomacromolecules: A comprehensive review

The growing utilization of rare earth elements (REEs) in industrial and technological applications has captured global interest, leading to the development of high-performance technologies in medical diagnosis, agriculture, and other electronic industries. This accelerated utilization has also raised human exposure levels, resulting in both favourable and unfavourable impacts. However, the effects of REEs are dependent on their concentration and molecular species. Therefore, scientific interest has increased in investigating the molecular interactions of REEs with biomolecules. In this current review, particular attention was paid to the molecular mechanism of interactions of Lanthanum (La), Cerium (Ce), and Gadolinium (Gd) with biomolecules, and the biological consequences were broadly interpreted. The review involved gathering and evaluating a vast scientific collection which primarily focused on the impact associated with REEs, ranging from earlier reports to recent discoveries, including studies in human and animal models. Thus, understanding the molecular interactions of each element with biomolecules will be highly beneficial in elucidating the consequences of REEs accumulation in the living organisms.

The impact of global climate changes on trace and rare earth elements mobilization in emerging periglacial terrains: Insights from western shore of Admiralty Bay (King George Island, Antarctic)

In the rapidly changing climate, the biogeochemical behaviours of trace elements and Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in emerging periglacial environments assumes profound importance. This study provides pivotal insights into this dynamic by investigating the Antarctic's response to global climate change. The bedrock of King George Island is rich in REEs, with the presence of trace metals (TEs), with the highest concentrations of metals found in ornithogenic soil (∑REE 84.01-85.53 mg∙kg-1 dry weight). REEs in the studied soil, found mainly in igneous rocks, as is indicated by the positive correlation of these elements with sodium and calcium. The TEs released as a result of weathering are leached by water flowing down local watercourses to Admiralty Bay, as indicated by the decreasing results of ∑REE = 11.59 μg∙dm-3 in watercourse water, ∑REE = 1.62 μg∙dm-3 in watercourse pools and ∑REE = 0.66 μg∙dm-3 in the water of Admiralty Bay at the outlet of the watercourse. Water originating from the melting of snow on the glacier also carried REEs (∑REE = 0.14 μg∙dm-3), a fact which suggest the further influx of these elements from atmospheric deposition. The Prasiola crispa turned out to be the most susceptible to the accumulation of REEs (∑ 80.73 ± 5.05 μg g-1) and TEs, with the exception of chromium and zinc, whose concentrations were found to be at their highest in Deschampsia antarctica. In Usnea antarctica, Xanthoria candelaria, and Ceratodon purpureus and Politrichastrum alpinum, a dominant role in the accumulation of REEs was played by HREEs. The determined enrichment factor (EF) indicates that the soil cover is a source of REEs (EFAlgae for ∑REE = 5.07; EFLichen for ∑REE = 6.65; EFBryophyta for ∑REE = 5.04; EFVascular for ∑REE = 4.38), while Ni, As and Pb accumulated in plants may originate from other sources than the soil.

Cellular Response of Adapted and Non-Adapted Tetrahymena thermophila Strains to Europium Eu(III) Compounds

Europium is one of the most reactive lanthanides and humans use it in many different applications, but we still know little about its potential toxicity and cellular response to its exposure. Two strains of the eukaryotic microorganism model Tetrahymena thermophila were adapted to high concentrations of two Eu(III) compounds (EuCl3 or Eu2O3) and compared to a control strain and cultures treated with both compounds. In this ciliate, EuCl3 is more toxic than Eu2O3. LC50 values show that this microorganism is more resistant to these Eu(III) compounds than other microorganisms. Oxidative stress originated mainly by Eu2O3 is minimized by overexpression of genes encoding important antioxidant enzymes. The overexpression of metallothionein genes under treatment with Eu(III) compounds supports the possibility that this lanthanide may interact with the -SH groups of the cysteine residues from metallothioneins and/or displace essential cations of these proteins during their homeostatic function. Both lipid metabolism (lipid droplets fusing with europium-containing vacuoles) and autophagy are involved in the cellular response to europium stress. Bioaccumulation, together with a possible biomineralization to europium phosphate, seems to be the main mechanism of Eu(III) detoxification in these cells.

Distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the feathers of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) from different geographical locations of the Antarctic peninsula area

Antarctica is the most remote and coldest regions of the planet, but the presence of REEs there has received little attention. This study assessed REE-contents in the feathers of adult gentoo penguins from Ardley Island, Kopaitic Island and Base O'Higgins. Field work was accomplished during 2011 (austral summer), and determination of elements was performed with ICP-MS. In general, REE-levels showed descending relations as follows: Ce > La > Y > Nd > Sc > Pr > Gd > Sm > Dy >Er > Yb > Eu > Ho > Tb > Tm > Lu. The data showed an increase of the levels of REEs from the lower part of the feather to the tip. This finding seems to be spatially dependent, but geochemical, anthropogenic conditions, feeding habits, sex, or even health status of birds should also be considered. It is a subject that requires deeper attention in future studies.

Enhanced removal of rare earth elements from aqueous media: exploring the potential of AM-3 and AM-4 titanosilicates

This study investigates the impact of three key variables on the performance of nanoporous AM-3 and layered AM-4 titanosilicates in removing nine REEs (Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy) from natural mineral water and identifies optimal operational conditions using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experimental conditions were determined by a Box-Behnken Design of 3 factors-3 levels (pH 4, 6, and 8; sorbent dose 20, 100, and 180 mg/L; and element concentration 1, 3, and 5 μmol/L). Three-dimensional response surfaces were used to assess the linear, quadratic, and interaction influences of each factor on the REEs' removal percentage. The pH was the most significant factor in the removal process using AM-3, while the sorbent dose was more important for AM-4. The results highlighted the sorbents' strong capacity for REE removal. The optimal operating conditions obtained by RSM were applied to aqueous solutions with salinity 10 (common in coastal and transitional systems) and 30 (average seawater salinity). The results showed that AM-3 has a strong potential for removing REEs in solutions with salinity 10 and 30, while AM-4 was less efficient due to competition between REEs and other ions present in the solution.

Effect of lanthanum nitrate on adipogenesis in mice

Lanthanum (La) is widely used in modern industry and agriculture because of its unique physicochemical properties and is broadly exposed in the population. Some studies have shown that La may have some effects on adipogenesis, but there is a lack of related in vivo evidence. In this study, the effects of La(NO3 )3 on adipogenesis and its associated mechanism were studied using C57BL/6J mouse model. The results showed that La(NO3 )3 exposure caused a decrease in body weight and the percentage of fat content in mice. In addition, the adipose marker molecules and specific adipogenic transcription factors decreased in both white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT). Detection of signaling pathway-related molecules revealed that canonical wnt/β-catenin pathway-related molecules were upregulated in both adipose tissues. In summary, in vivo exposure to La(NO3 )3 might inhibited adipogenesis in mice, possibly through upregulation of the canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Mechanistic analysis of the sub chronic toxicity of La and Gd in Daphnia magna based on TKTD modelling and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence imaging

The release of lanthanides (Ln) into the environment has increased in recent decades due to their expanding applications in society. Studying their toxicity in aquatic ecosystems is urgent and challenging, with contradictory evidence presented in the literature. This study compared the biodistribution of La and Gd in Daphnia magna exposed to sub-chronic conditions and developed the first Toxicokinetic-Toxicodynamic (TKTD) model for these lanthanides with this model crustacean. D. magna were initially exposed for 7 days to concentrations close to the LC50 of La (2.10 mg L-1) and Gd (1.70 mg L-1). After exposure, half of the live daphnids were introduced in a clean media to allow depuration over 24 h, while the other organisms were directly prepared for synchrotron imaging measurements. Synchrotron X-ray fluorescence analysis revealed that metal distribution in the organisms was similar for both La and Gd, predominantly localized in the intestinal tract, even after the depuration process. These results indicate that ingested metal can adversely affect organisms under sub-chronic exposure conditions, highlighting the importance of using nominal concentrations as a more suitable indicator of metal bioavailability for risk assessment. The General Unified Threshold Model of Survival (GUTS) TKTD framework, in its reduced form (GUTS-RED), was developed for La and Gd using dissolved and nominal concentrations. D. magna were exposed for 7 days to concentrations from 0.5 to 5 mg L-1 of La or Gd and mortality monitored daily. The mechanistic model revealed a faster toxicokinetics for La than Gd and a higher toxicity for Gd than La in the organism. This study confirmed, despite similar chemical properties, the variation in both toxicity and toxicokinetics between these two metals.

Determination of dose- and time-dependent hepatotoxicity and apoptosis of Lanthanum oxide nanoparticles in female Swiss albino mice

Nanosized lanthanum oxide particles (La2O3) are commonly utilized in various industries. The potential health risks associated with La2O3 nanoparticles, cytotoxic effects at varying doses and time intervals, and the mechanisms behind their induction of behavioral changes remain uncertain and necessitate further investigation. Therefore, this study examined in vivo hepatotoxicity, considering the quantity (60, 150, and 300 mg/kg) and time-dependent induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) over one week or 21 days. The mice received intraperitoneal injections of three different concentrations in Milli-Q water. Throughout the experiments, no physical changes or weight loss were observed among the groups. However, after 21 days, only the highest concentration showed signs of anxiety in the activity cage (p < 0.05). Subsequently, all animals treated with La2O3 NPs exhibited a significant loss of learning and memory recall using the Active Avoidances test, after 21 days (p < 0.001). Markers for anti-reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly upregulated in response to all concentrations of NPs after seven days compared to the control group. This was confirmed by a significant increase in glutathione peroxidase (Gpx1) and pro-apoptotic Caspase-3 expression at the lowest and highest doses. Additionally, both transcription and protein levels of the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 surpassed P53 protein in a dosage-dependent manner, indicating activation of the primary anti-apoptosis pathway. After 21 days, P53 levels exceeded BCL-2 protein levels, confirming a significant loss of BCL-2 mRNA, particularly at the 300 mg/kg concentration. Furthermore, a higher transcription level of Caspase-3, SOD, and Gpx1 was observed, with the highest values detected at the 300 mg/kg concentration, indicating the activation of cell death. Histopathological analysis of the liver illustrated apoptotic bodies resulting from La2O3 NP concentration. The investigation revealed multiple inflammatory foci, cytoplasmic degeneration, steatosis, and DNA fragmentation consistent with increased damage over time due to higher concentrations. Blood samples were also analyzed to determine liver enzymatic changes, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lipid profiles. The results showed significant differences among all La2O3 NP concentrations, with the most pronounced damage observed at the 300 mg/kg dose even after 21 days. Based on an animal model, this study suggests that La2O3 hepatotoxicity is likely caused by the size and shape of nanoparticles (NPs), following a dose and time-dependent mechanism that induces the production of reactive oxygen species and behavioral changes such as anxiety and memory loss.

Effects of gadolinium (Gd) and a Gd-based contrast agent (GBCA) on early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Gadolinium (Gd) is one of the rare earth elements (REY) and is widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Anthropogenic Gd enrichment has frequently been found in wastewater treatment plant effluents in industrialised countries, rising concerns regarding effects on aquatic biota. This study investigates the acute toxicity and sublethal effects of Gd in two forms, as inorganic salt (GdCl3) and as Gd-based contrast agent (GBCA), on early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Nominal exposure concentrations ranged from 3 to 3000 μg L-1, with an exposure duration of 96 h. None of the two tested compounds were acutely toxic to embryos and larvae. Similarly, we did not observe any effects on larval development and locomotive behaviour. However, we found significant changes in the brain activity of larvae exposed to the highest concentrations of GdCl3 and the GBCA. Our findings show that Gd can have sublethal effects on developing fish at lower concentrations than reported previously, highlighting the necessity of investigating the long-term fate and effects of GBCAs released into the aquatic environment.

Evaluation of Holmium(III), Erbium(III), and Gadolinium(III) Accumulation by Cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis Using Neutron Activation Analysis and Elements' Effects on Biomass Quantity and Biochemical Composition

Rare-earth elements are released into the aquatic environment as a result of their extensive use in industry and agriculture, and they can be harmful for living organisms. The effects of holmium(III), erbium(III), and gadolinium(III) when added to a growth medium in concentrations ranging from 10 to 30 mg/L on the accumulation ability and biochemical composition of Arthrospira platensis were studied. According to the results of a neutron activation analysis, the uptake of elements by cyanobacteria occurred in a dose-dependent manner. The addition of gadolinium(III) to the growth medium did not significantly affect the amount of biomass, whereas erbium(III) and holmium(III) reduced it up to 22% compared to the control. The effects of rare-earth elements on the content of proteins, carbohydrates, phycobiliproteins, lipids, β carotene, and chlorophyll a were evaluated. The studied elements had different effects on the primary biomolecule content, suggesting that holmium(III) and erbium(III) were more toxic than Gd(III) for Arthrospira platensis.

Effects of rare earth element samarium doped zinc oxide nanoparticles on Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819): Filtration rates and histopathology

BACKGROUND

Doping was reported to improve the photo catalytic performance, antioxidant, antibacterial and other biological properties of nanoparticles. While, improving the nanoparticle properties, doping could change toxicity profile to living organism. Hence, the aim of this work was to assess the effects of samarium doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (Sm doped ZnO NPs) on the edible mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

METHODS

Sm doped ZnO nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. 156 mussels were exposed during 7 days to a low, intermediate and high concentration of Sm doped ZnO NPs (0.5, 1 and 1.5 mg/L, respectively). The filtration rates were assessed after 1 and 2 h. Histopathological alterations were determined in gills, digestive glands and gonads using a quantitative analysis.

RESULTS

The filtration rates decreased in all individuals exposed to Sm doped ZnO NPs, a significant decrease was noted with the low and intermediate concentration (0.5 and 1 mg/L) of Sm doped ZnO NPs after 1 and 2 h, respectively. The histopathological index (Ih) estimated for gills, digestive glands and gonads showed differences depending on the organ and the nanoparticle concentration. The highest Ih were reported for digestive glands and female gonads exposed to the intermediate concentration (1 mg/L) of Sm doped ZnO NPs. As for gills and male gonads, the highest Ih were noted with the high concentration (1.5 mg/L) of Sm doped ZnO NPs.

CONCLUSION

Results from this study revealed the toxicity of Sm doped ZnO NPs in Mytilus galloprovincialis gills, digestive glands and gonads. The toxicity induced by this nanoparticle varies depending on the organ and the concentration.

Occurrence of rare earth elements in water, sediment, and freshwater fish of diverse trophic levels and feeding ecology: Insights from the Po river (northwest Italy)

To date, the occurrence of rare earth elements (REEs) in freshwater ecosystems has garnered limited attention in the scientific literature. Furthermore, a dearth of data exists regarding their potential bioaccumulation in freshwater fish. To fill this knowledge gap, we studied REEs concentrations in water, sediment, and fish specimens collected along the Po River (northwest Italy) and calculated biota-sediment accumulation (BSAF) and bioconcentration (BCF) factors, while taking into account fish feeding behavior and trophic level effects on the overall content of total REEs (ƩREEs). The fish communities were composed of native and non-native species. Remarkably low concentrations of REEs (<0.0003 mg/L) were detected in the water samples, indicating REEs insolubility. In contrast, sediment samples were found to be a good sink for REEs, with a higher mean ƩREEs recorded for the samples from the Moncalieri station (70.93 mg/kg). Notably, no significant differences in ƩREEs concentration were observed in the muscle tissue of fish samples from the three stations. The highest mean ƩREEs was recorded in the samples from the Murazzi station (0.027 mg/kg). The BSAF was very low, consistently below the unit, indicating an absence of bioaccumulation in fish muscle from sediment. In contrast, the BCF was high for several REEs, mainly for Sc and Y. While feeding ecology did not appear to affect REEs accumulation in muscle, there was a significant negative relationship between the trophic level and ΣREEs, indicating a trophic dilution of REEs from predator (Silurus glanis) to planktivorous (Alburnus arborella) fish. This study provides baseline concentrations, trophic transfers, and patterns of REEs in a river system. Further studies are needed to understand the transfer of REEs to other biotic components of lotic ecosystems.

Hormesis and Low Toxic Effects of Three Lanthanides in Microfungi Isolated from Rare Earth Mining Waste in Northwestern Russia

The low-dose toxicity of chloride and nitrate salts of three lanthanides (La, Ce and Nd) was tested on six microfungal species. Five of them (Geomyces vinaceus, Aspergillus niveoglaucus, Pseudogymnoascus pannorum, Penicillium simplicissimum and Umbelopsis isabellina) were isolated from the loparite ore tailings on the Kola Peninsula, northwestern Russia. Sydowia polyspora was a control strain. In the case of nitrate salts, the toxicity of REEs to four of six microorganisms was significantly (p < 0.5) lower compared to chloride salts. In this case, nitrates can play the role of exogenous nutrients, compensating for the toxic effect of REEs. Interestingly, U. isabellina only showed an opposite response, indicating the highest toxicity of nitrate (IC5 = 9-20 mg/L) REEs' salts compared to chlorides (IC5 = 80-195 mg/L) at low concentration levels. In addition, treatment with lanthanides showed a "hormesis effect" on fungal growth with stimulation at low doses and inhibition at high doses. However, U. isabellina and S. polyspora demonstrated the absence of hormetic response under the treatment of REEs' nitrate salt. Taking into account the specific hormetic responses and high tolerance of P. simplicissimum and U. isabellina to lanthanides, our findings may be useful in the assessment of the potential application of the selected fungi to bioremediation and REE bioleaching.

Spatiotemporal profile and ecological impacts of major and trace elements in surface sediments of marginal seas of the Arctic and Northern Pacific Oceans

The status and ecological impacts of sedimentary elements of the marginal seas of Arctic and Northern Pacific Oceans was investigated during 2016 to 2018 by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Industrial (0.006 mg kg-1-64.6 g kg-1), precious (0.003-43.8 mg kg-1), rare earth (0.006-112.9 mg kg-1), and heavy metal (0.009-398.9 mg kg-1) elements showed spatial variation, and temporal uniformity. The results indicated ΣREEs and light REEs enrichment compared to chondrite and heavy REEs, respectively, while nonsignificant positive and negative δCe and δEu anomalies existed, respectively. High contamination and extreme enrichment of priority control, industrial (As, Mo, Re, Sb), precious (Au, Ir, Pd, Pt, and Ru) and RE elements indicated potential moderate to high ecological and biological risks. The study highlighted the ecological importance and fragile nature of these ecosystems and calls for an urgent action to ensure sustainability of these ecosystems.

Long-term toxicity of chlorpromazine, diclofenac and two lanthanides on three generations of Ceriodaphnia dubia

Amultigenerational study on Ceriodaphnia dubia was carried out by exposing three subsequent generations to pharmaceuticals chlorpromazine (CPZ) and diclofenac (DCF), and two lanthanide chlorides, gadolinium as GdCl3 and europium as EuCl3. As the treatments, environmentally relevant concentrations were chosen (0.001, 0.01 and 0.1 mg/L for CPZ; 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/L for DCF; 0.425, 4.25 and 42.5 µg/L for Gd and 0.41, 4.1 and 41 µg/L for Eu). Survival, population growth and reproduction success were evaluated at 21 and 30 days of exposure, and the whole observation period lasted 40 days. The least sensitive to all selected substances was the first daphnid generation (F1). Within 21-day exposure, no significant effects of the psychotropic drug CPZ on C. dubia survival were observed in generations F1-F3. The anti-inflammatory drug DCF did not affect survival in the F1 generation; however, it significantly reduced survival in the F3 generation at 1-10 mg/L. Both lanthanides did not affect survival in the F1 and F2 generations of C. dubia but considerably decreased survival in the F3 at 4-42 µg/L. Both pharmaceuticals stimulated the reproduction of C. dubia in the F1 generation, while inhibition occurred at the highest tested concentrations in generations F2 and F3. The inhibitory effect on the reproductive success of lanthanides in the F2 generation resembled that for CPZ but not for DCF. The dynamics of adverse effects during the 21-30-day period revealed that despite increased mortality in the controls (up to 30%), concentrations used in the study minified, in most instances, the survival and aggravated population growth and reproduction success of C. dubia. Our data suggest that C. dubia as a test organism can be used for 21 days in multigenerational investigations, especially when testing close to environmental concentrations. In this respect, the standard C. dubia chronic toxicity assay seems limited since prolonged observations and several generations of daphnids are required to obtain reliable information for the risk assessment of potentially aggressive chemicals.

First report of some rare earth elements and trace elements in sands from different islands located in the Marine Natural Monument Archipelago Cayos Cochinos, Caribbean Sea

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of chemicals widely used in emerging technologies today, and are often labeled as potential environmental contaminants. The Cayos Cochinos Archipelago is a protected area of Honduras, Central America, with intertidal and supratidal sands, making it a prime candidate for pollution research. In December 2022, sand samples from the Cayos Cochinos area was collected and analyzed by X-ray fluorescence to determine the levels of REEs and some less-studied trace elements (TEs). Based on the findings, REEs mean contents (μg g-1 d.w.) fluctuated between 2.96 for Y to 667.1 for Nd, while TEs ranged from 10.37 for Th to 3896.2 for Sr. Also, the results showed significantly higher levels of La, Pr, Y, Sr, Ba, and Th in the supratidal zone than in the intertidal zone. The data are useful as a basis for understanding the presence of chemical elements in near-shore marine areas and subsequently help identify sustainable practices that will reduce the impacts of these chemicals.

Yeast Deletomics to Uncover Gadolinium Toxicity Targets and Resistance Mechanisms

Among the rare earth elements (REEs), a crucial group of metals for high-technologies. Gadolinium (Gd) is the only REE intentionally injected to human patients. The use of Gd-based contrasting agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the primary route for Gd direct exposure and accumulation in humans. Consequently, aquatic environments are increasingly exposed to Gd due to its excretion through the urinary tract of patients following an MRI examination. The increasing number of reports mentioning Gd toxicity, notably originating from medical applications of Gd, necessitates an improved risk-benefit assessment of Gd utilizations. To go beyond toxicological studies, unravelling the mechanistic impact of Gd on humans and the ecosystem requires the use of genome-wide approaches. We used functional deletomics, a robust method relying on the screening of a knock-out mutant library of Saccharomyces cerevisiae exposed to toxic concentrations of Gd. The analysis of Gd-resistant and -sensitive mutants highlighted the cell wall, endosomes and the vacuolar compartment as cellular hotspots involved in the Gd response. Furthermore, we identified endocytosis and vesicular trafficking pathways (ESCRT) as well as sphingolipids homeostasis as playing pivotal roles mediating Gd toxicity. Finally, tens of yeast genes with human orthologs linked to renal dysfunction were identified as Gd-responsive. Therefore, the molecular and cellular pathways involved in Gd toxicity and detoxification uncovered in this study underline the pleotropic consequences of the increasing exposure to this strategic metal.

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Duckweed Counting Using StarDist and Its Application on Measuring Growth Inhibition Potential of Rare Earth Elements as Contaminants of Emerging Concerns

In recent years, there have been efforts to utilize surface water as a power source, material, and food. However, these efforts are impeded due to the vast amounts of contaminants and emerging contaminants introduced by anthropogenic activities. Herbicides such as Glyphosate and Glufosinate are commonly known to contaminate surface water through agricultural industries. In contrast, some emerging contaminants, such as rare earth elements, have started to enter the surface water from the production and waste of electronic products. Duckweeds are angiosperms from the Lemnaceae family and have been used for toxicity tests in aquatic environments, mainly those from the genus Lemna, and have been approved by OECD. In this study, we used duckweed from the genus Wolffia, which is smaller and considered a good indicator of metal pollutants in the aquatic environment. The growth rate of duckweed is the most common endpoint in observing pollutant toxicity. In order to observe and mark the fronds automatically, we used StarDist, a machine learning-based tool. StarDist is available as a plugin in ImageJ, simplifying and assisting the counting process. Python also helps arrange, manage, and calculate the inhibition percentage after duckweeds are exposed to contaminants. The toxicity test results showed Dysprosium to be the most toxic, with an IC50 value of 14.6 ppm, and Samarium as the least toxic, with an IC50 value of 279.4 ppm. In summary, we can provide a workflow for automatic frond counting using StarDist integrated with ImageJ and Python to simplify the detection, counting, data management, and calculation process.

Concentration of fifty-six elements in excreta of penguins from the Antarctic Peninsula area

Seabird feces as indicators of the exposure to environmental contaminants have been studied worldwide. Penguins are indicator species for marine pollution, but their role as biovectors of rare earth elements (REEs) to ecosystems have been little studied. The present study quantified the concentration of REEs and trace elements (TEs) in feces of gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua). Adult penguin excreta from Fildes Bay (King George Island) and Yelcho Base (Palmer Archipelago) were collected and then analyzed by ICP-MS. Among REEs, levels ranged from 0.0038 to 1.02 μg g^-1 d.w. for Lu and Ce, respectively. For TEs, the levels varied widely through the sample set, with Al, Fe, Sr, Zn and Ti as the highest mean levels, particularly at Fildes Bay. The data show that gentoo penguins act as a biovector organism by transporting TEs and REEs from the sea to land via excreta, reaffirming that this species acts as an important biovector organism in Antarctic ecosystems. The potential impacts of this process on Antarctic ecosystems needs further research.

Settleable atmospheric particulate matter harms a marine invertebrate: Integrating chemical and biological damage in a bivalve model

Some atmospheric pollutants may affect aquatic ecosystems after settling, generating contamination, bioaccumulation, and threats to aquatic species. Metallurgical processes result in the emission of settleable atmospheric particulate matter (SePM), including metals and metalloids, along with rare earth elements (REE) that are considered emerging contaminants. We report the 30-day exposure of brown mussels (Perna perna) to SePM collected in a metallurgical area of southeast Brazil close to estuarine ecosystems, followed by a 30-day clearance period, to evaluate the toxic potential of SePM to this model mollusk. The bioaccumulation of 28 elements identified in SePM and the sublethal effects were evaluated. REEs were found in SePM (Ce, Y, and La). Significant bioaccumulation of eight metals (Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Cd, and Ba) was found in the bivalves and correlates with the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, showing a dose-dependent mode and suggesting a pre-pathological condition that could lead to ecological disturbances over time. Conversely, the unchanged lipid-peroxidation level after SePM exposure could indicate the effectiveness of the antioxidant system in protecting gills and digestive glands. The clearance period was not enough to successfully reverse the negative effects observed. So far, the current results enhance the comprehension of the negative role of SePM on metal bioaccumulation and metal-induced toxicity to aquatic biota. Thus, this report adds innovative findings on the role of SePM in aquatic pollution in coastal areas affected by atmospheric pollution, which should be relevant for future public policies to verify and control the environmental pollution.

Intracellular bioaccumulation of the rare earth element Gadolinium in ciliate cells resulting in biogenic particle formation and excretion

Ciliates are abundant unicellular organisms capable of resisting high concentrations of metal ions in the environment caused by various anthropogenic activities. Understanding the cellular pathways involved in resistance to and detoxification of elements is required to predict the impact of ciliates on environmental element cycles. Here, we investigated the so far unknown process of tolerance, cellular uptake and bioaccumulation of the emerging rare earth element gadolinium (Gd) in the common ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis. Gd treatment results in the intracellular formation and excretion of biogenic Gd-containing particles. This cellular process effectively removes dissolved Gd from the organic growth medium by 53.37% within 72 h. Based on light and electron microscopic observations, we postulate a detoxification pathway: Cells take up toxic Gd³⁺ ions from the medium by endocytosis, process them into stable Gd-containing particles within food vacuoles, and exocytose them. Stable biogenic particles can be isolated, which are relatively homogeneous and have a diameter of about 3 µm. They consist of the elements Gd, C, O, P, Na, Mg, K, and Ca. These findings broaden the view of metal ion accumulation by protists and are of relevance to understand environmental elemental cycles and may inspire approaches for metal recovery or bioremediation.

Lanthanum Chloride Induces Axon Abnormality Through LKB1-MARK2 and LKB1-STK25-GM130 Signaling Pathways

Lanthanum (La) is a natural rare-earth element that can damage the central nervous system and impair learning and memory. However, its neurotoxic mechanism remains unclear. In this study, adult female rats were divided into 4 groups and given distilled water solution containing 0%, 0.125%, 0.25%, and 0.5% LaCl₃, respectively, and this was done from conception to the end of the location. Their offspring rats were used to establish animal models to investigate LaCl₃ neurotoxicity. Primary neurons cultured in vitro were treated with LaCl₃ and infected with LKB1 overexpression lentivirus. The results showed that LaCl₃ exposure resulted in abnormal axons in the hippocampus and primary cultured neurons. LaCl₃ reduced the expression of LKB1, p-LKB1, STRAD and MO25 proteins, and directly or indirectly affected the expression of LKB1, leading to decreased activity of LKB1-MARK2 and LKB1-STK25-GM130 pathways. This study indicated that LaCl₃ exposure could interfere with the normal effects of LKB1 in the brain and downregulate LKB1-MARK2 and LKB1-STK25-GM130 signaling pathways, resulting in abnormal axon in offspring rats.

Visible-UVC upconversion polymer films for prevention of microbial infection

Bacterial infections caused by the growth and reproduction of pathogenic bacteria on wounds are one of the main reasons that hinder wound healing. Antibacterial wound dressings protect wounds from bacterial infections. Herein, we developed a polymeric antibacterial composite film using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) as the substrate. The film used praseodymium-doped yttrium orthosilicate (Y₂SiO₅: Pr³⁺, YSO-Pr) to convert visible light into short-wavelength ultraviolet light (UVC) to kill bacteria. The YSO-Pr/PVA/SA showed upconversion luminescence in photoluminescence spectrometry tests, and the emitted UVC inhibited Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria in antibacterial tests. In vivo animal tests showed that YSO-Pr/PVA/SA is effective and safe for inhibiting bacteria in real wounds. The in vitro cytotoxicity test further confirmed the good biocompatibility of the antibacterial film. In addition, YSO-Pr/PVA/SA exhibited sufficient tensile strength. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of upconversion materials for use in medical dressings.

Locked up Inside the Vessels: Rare Earth Elements Are Transferred and Stored in the Conductive Tissues of the Accumulating Fern Dryopteris erythrosora

Rare earth elements (REEs) are strategic metals strongly involved in low-carbon energy conversion. However, these emerging contaminants are increasingly disseminated into ecosystems, raising concern regarding their toxicity. REE-accumulating plants are crucial subjects to better understand REE transfer to the trophic chain but are also promising phytoremediation tools. In this analysis, we deciphered REE accumulation sites in the REE-accumulating fern Dryopteris erythrosora by synchrotron X-ray μfluorescence (μXRF). This technique allows a high-resolution and in situ analysis of fresh samples or frozen-hydrated cross sections of different organs of the plant. In the sporophyte, REEs were translocated from the roots to the fronds by the xylem sap and were stored within the xylem conductive system. The comparison of REE distribution and accumulation levels in the healthy and necrotic parts of the frond shed light on the differential mobility between light and heavy REEs. Furthermore, the comparison emphasized that necrotized areas were not the main REE-accumulating sites. Finally, the absence of cell-to-cell mobility of REEs in the gametophyte suggested the absence of REE-compatible transporters in photosynthetic tissues. These results provide valuable knowledge on the physiology of REE-accumulating ferns to understand the REE cycle in biological systems and the expansion of phytotechnologies for REE-enriched or REE-contaminated soils.

Effect of rare earth oxide microparticles on mechanical, corrosion, antibacterial, and hemolytic behavior of Mg-Hydroxyapatite composite for orthopedic applications - A preliminary in-vitro study

The current study focused on developing a multifunctional Mg-based biodegradable composite that mitigates the trade-off between strength, antibacterial, and cytotoxicity behavior for orthopedic bone implants. The composite has been reinforced with natural mineral-based Hydroxyapatite and rare earth oxide (REO): Neodymium oxide. The effect of different concentrations of REO on the mechanical, antibacterial, and corrosion properties was analyzed. The antibacterial properties were assessed against gram-positive B. Subtilis and gram-negative E. Coli bacterial pathogens. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of the composites was assessed via Hemolysis percentage calculations. In addition, the microstructure characterization was performed via FESEM, XRD, and EDS techniques, and different intermetallic phase formations were recorded. Contact angle measurements were done via the sessile drop method to analyze the impact of rare earth oxide on the surface properties of the synthesized composites and their relationship with bacterial adhesion. The corrosion studies and swelling rates were performed under PBS and DMEM solutions. The composite with the addition of 1.5% REO outperformed the experiments with a compressive strength of 126.4 MPa, and a corrosion rate less than 0.2 mm/yr. The corrosion rates and degree of swelling were seen to be more stable in DMEM solution as compared to PBS. Improved antibacterial rates were observed against both pathogens after the addition of REO along with a hemolysis percentage less than 5% for Mg-HA-1.5Nd₂ O₃ . The composites showed increased hydrophobicity (>75%) by the addition of 1.5% REO. Hence, it was concluded that REO (Nd₂ O₃ ) addition to the Mg-Hydroxyapatite composite is a feasible choice as a biomaterial for bone implant applications.

Occurrence of rare earth elements (REEs) and trace elements (TEs) in feathers of adult and young Gentoo penguins from King George Island, Antarctica

Penguins are sentinel species for marine pollution, but their role as potential biovectors of REEs or TEs to ecosystems has been poorly studied. The present study analyzed (ICP-MS) feathers of young and adult Gentoo penguins from Fildes Bay, for 63 elements (including 15 REEs). Most of the REEs were present at very low levels, ranging from 0.002 (Lu) to 0.452 (Sm) μg g^-1 d.w., several orders of magnitude lower than TEs. The content of TEs varied widely, with Al, Fe, Zn, Sr, Ba, Ti and Mn as the seven having the highest concentrations in the feathers of both age groups. The results show that P. papua deposits REEs and TEs through the feathers on the penguin rockery, whose potential actual impacts and long-term fate in remote regions need deeper research. This work presents essential baseline data that will be useful for further studies on Antarctic penguins.

First metal and metalloid study assessment for the Black Triggerfish Melichthys niger (Bloch, 1786): Baseline data from a pristine South Atlantic oceanic island

Metal and metalloid concentrations in Black Triggerfish, Melichthys niger (Tetraodontiformes, Balistidae), and sediments from Trindade Island, an isolated, pristine, and understudied environment in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean were determined. Several elements were detected in sediment, including Rare Earth Elements (REE). Hg and the REE Nd were, however, not detected. Elements determined in triggerfish are indicative of systemic circulation and the presence of toxic elements indicates an exposure source. No significant associations were detected between elements in fish organs and total length, suggesting no bioaccumulation with age, nor between organs and sediment, indicating probable dietary origin. Biliary excretion indicated a local chronic source of As and Cd and non-quantifiable REE elimination. Hg concentrations were over thresholds that affect fish biochemistry processes. These baseline data are valuable concerning elemental contamination in remote oceanic islands, with the potential to be applied to future biomonitoring efforts and conservation measures for reef ecosystems worldwide.

Maternal cerium nitrate exposure induces developmental immunotoxicity in BALB/c mouse offspring

With the increasing application of cerium and rare-earth elements (REEs), cerium exposure is becoming more widespread. However, there remains a paucity of evidence on developmental immunotoxicity of cerium. This study was designed to examine the developmental immunotoxicity of gestational and postnatal exposure to cerium nitrate (CN) in BALB/C mouse offspring. Dams were given CN by oral gavage at 0, 0.002, 0.02 and 0.2 mg/kg from gestation day 5 (GD5) to postnatal day 21 (PND 21). On PND 21, the highest dose of CN significantly suppressed the NK cell cytotoxicity, and reduced the proportions of NK cells in peripheral blood and spleen of both female and male pups, however, the proportions of monocytes in peripheral blood and macrophages in spleen only increased in female pups. For adaptive immunity, on PND 21, the suppression of T/B lymphocyte proliferation, humoral and cellular immune responses (number of splenic plaque-forming cells, PFC, and delayed-type hypersensitivity, DTH) were observed in both female and male pup mice exposed to 0.2 mg/kg CN. However, the fall of proportions of T/B lymphocytes in peripheral blood (PB), spleen and mesenteric lymph node (MLN) only found in female pups at 0.2 mg/kg on PND 21. Most indications recovered to normal after 3-week cessation of CN exposure, except the reduction of DTH and PFC. From the findings in this study, the lowest-observed-adverse-effect level (LOAEL) of CN for developmental immunotoxicity was estimated to be 0.2 mg/kg bw per day.

Cerium improves the physiology and medicinal components of Dendrobium nobile Lindl. under copper stress

Heavy metal stress affects the quality of medicinal plants, and rare earth elements can effectively alleviate heavy metal stress. In this paper, we investigated the effects of rare earth element cerium (0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 mg/L) on the physiological and medicinal components of Dendrobium nobile Lindl. under copper (200 mg/L) stress. The results revealed that cerium (Ce) had a good alleviating effect on copper (Cu) stress, low concentrations of Ce (10-20 mg/L) significantly improved the resistance and medicinal qualities of the plant such as polysaccharide, polyphenol and flavonoid, it also increased the content of photosynthetic pigment, proline, soluble sugar and soluble protein of D. nobile Lindl., effectively balance the osmotic pressure and the generation and removal of reactive oxygen species in the plant, thereby the toxic effect of copper on D. nobile Lindl. is alleviated. From the point of view of the treatment time when the optimal relieving concentration appeared, the optimal concentration for relieving antioxidant enzyme activity all appeared at the treatment time of 10 d, the optimum concentrations of other indicators all appeared at the treatment time of 15 d. Overall, this study suggests that the optimum level of Ce (10-20 mg/L) might be promising for alleviating the adverse impacts of copper stress and promoting the accumulation of medicinal components in D. nobile Lindl.

Increasing Temperatures Potentiate the Damage of Rare Earth Element Yttrium to the Crop Plant Triticum aestivum L

Given that increasing temperature may aggravate the toxicity of pollutants, it is a daunting challenge to evaluate the realistic risks of rare earth elements (REEs) under global warming. Here, we studied how elevated temperatures (27 and 32 °C) impact the effect of yttrium (Y) on wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) at concentrations not causing effects (0, 0.5, and 1 μM) at the control temperature (22 °C) in a hydroponic system. After 14 days of exposure, significant inhibition (p < 0.05, 29.5%) of root elongation was observed only at 1 μM of Y at 32 °C. Exposure to Y at 27 °C showed no visible effects on root length, but induced significant (p < 0.05) metabolic disorders of a range of carbohydrates and amino acids related to galactose, phenylalanine, and glutamate metabolisms. Such cases were even shifted to substantial perturbation of the nucleotide pool reallocation involved in the disruption of purine and pyrimidine metabolism at 32 °C. These observations were regulated by sets of genes involved in these perturbed pathways. Using weighted gene co-expression network analysis, the disorder of nucleotide metabolism was shown to be responsible for the aggravated Y phytotoxicity at the extreme high temperature. Although the temperature fluctuation considered seems to be in an extreme range, unexpected implications driven by high temperature cannot be neglected. Our findings thus reduce the gaps of knowledge in REE toxicity to plants under future climate warming scenarios and highlight the importance of incorporating environmental temperature into the framework of the risk assessment of REEs.

Trace and rare earth elements in excreta of two species of marine mammals from South Shetland Islands, Antarctica

Pinnipeds are sentinel species for marine pollution, but their role as vectors of trace elements (TEs) or rare earth elements (REEs) to ecosystems has been poorly studied. The present study tested pinniped feces for 61 elements, including REEs. Feces of adult seals (Mirounga leonina, Hydrurga leptonyx) from Fildes Bay, King George Island, Antarctica, were analyzed by ICP-MS. TEs varied by several orders of magnitude across the suite examined herein, with Fe, Al, Zn, Mn, HgII and Sr as the top six in both species. Of the REEs, Ce, Dy, Er, Eu, Gd, Ho, La, Lu, Nd, Pr, Sc, Sm, Tb, Y and Yb were found consistently in all samples and ranged from 0.935 to 0.006 μg g^-1 d.w. The results show that both species act as biovector organisms of TEs and REEs through feces in remote environments, whose actual impacts and long-term fate need further exploration.

Gadolinium based contrast agents (GBCAs): Uniqueness, aquatic toxicity concerns, and prospective remediation

The current toxicity concerns of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) have birthed the need to regulate and, sometimes restrict its clinical administration. However, tolerable concentration levels of Gd in the water sector have not been set. Therefore, the detection and speedy increase of the anthropogenic Gd-GBCAs in the various water bodies, including those serving as the primary source of drinking water for adults and children, is perturbing. Nevertheless, the strongly canvassed risk-benefit considerations and superior uniqueness of GBCAs compared to the other ferromagnetic metals guarantees its continuous administration for Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigations regardless of the toxicity concerns. Unfortunately, findings have shown that both the advanced and conventional wastewater treatment processes do not satisfactorily remove GBCAs but rather risk transforming the chelated GBCAs to their free ionic metal (Gd ³⁺) through inadvertent degradation processes. This unintentional water processing-induced GBCA dechelation leads to the intricate  pathway for unintentional human intake of Gd ion. Hence exposure to its probable ecotoxicity and several reported inimical effects on human health such as; digestive symptoms, twitching or weakness, cognitive flu, persistent skin diseases, body pains, acute renal and non-renal adverse reactions, chronic skin, and eyes changes. This work proposed an economical and manageable remediation technique for the potential remediation of Gd-GBCAs in wastewater, while a precautionary limit for Gd in public water and commercial drinks is advocated.

Interaction of the Fungal Metabolite Harzianic Acid with Rare-Earth Cations (Pr3+, Eu3+, Ho3+, Tm3+)

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are in all respect a class of new contaminants that may have toxic effects on organisms and microorganisms and information on their interactions with natural ligands should be of value to predict and control their diffusion in natural environments. In the current study, we investigate interactions of tripositive cations of praseodymium, europium, holmium, and thulium with harzianic acid (H₂L), a secondary metabolite produced by selected strains of fungi belonging to the Trichoderma genus. We applied the same techniques and workflow previously employed in an analogous study concerning lanthanum, neodymium, samarium, and gadolinium tripositive cations. Therefore, in the current study, HPLC-ESI-HRMS experiments, circular dichroism (CD), and UV-Vis spectrophotometric absorption data, as well as accurate pH measurements, were applied to characterize bonding interactions between harzianic acid and Pr³⁺, Eu³⁺, Ho³⁺, and Tm³⁺ cations. Problems connected to the low solubility of harzianic acid in water were overcome by employing a 0.1 M NaClO₄/(CH₃OH + H₂O 50/50 w/w) mixed solvent. For Pr³⁺, Ho³⁺, and Tm³⁺, only the mono complexes PrL⁺, HoL⁺, and TmL⁺ were detected and their formation constant determined. Eu³⁺ forms almost exclusively the bis complex EuL2− for which the corresponding formation constant is reported; under our experimental conditions, the mono complex EuL⁺ is irrelevant. Combining the results of the present and previous studies, a picture of interactions of harzianic acid with rare-earth cations extending over 8 of the 17 REEs can be composed. In order to complement chemical information with toxicological information, a battery of bioassays was applied to evaluate the effects of praseodymium, europium, holmium, and thulium tripositive cations on a suite of bioindicators including Aliivibrio fischeri (Gram-negative bacterium), Raphidocelis subcapitata (green alga), and Daphnia magna (microcrustacean), and median effective concentration (EC50) values of Pr³⁺, Eu³⁺, Ho³⁺, and Tm³⁺ for the tested species were assessed.

Neodymium oxide nanostructures and their cytotoxic evaluation in human cancer cells

Neodymium oxide exhibits a unique property, which facilitates and largely utilized as an industrial applications. A number of cytotoxic study is available but very limited information is available to understand their biological activity with neodymium oxide at a very low conc- entration of the material. The present work was designed to understand the cytotoxicity against liver (HepG-2) and lung (A-549) cancer cells. Initially, Neodymium oxides (Nd₂O₃) were prepared and characterized with various instruments. The crystallinity and morphology of Nd₂O₃ powder were examined with instruments such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX) respectively, revealed the size of curved nanostructure are ~140 ± 2 in diameter whereas length goes upto ~700 nm with elemental composition. The cytotoxicity study was conducted with MTT, NRU assay with genotoxicity study via ROS, cell cycle and qPCR analysis. The cells cytotoxic assessment were analysed via MTT(3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)- 2,5-Diphenyl tetra zolium Bromide) and Neutral Red Uptake (NRU) assay with neodymium oxide (Nd₂O₃), which indicates the reduction in cell viability. Additionally, cell-cycle analysis showed an increase in the apoptotic peak after a 24-h. Quantitative real-time PCR (RT-PCR) data revealed that apoptotic genes such as p53, bax, and caspase-3 were up regulated, whereas bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic gene, was down regulated; therefore, apoptosis was mediated through ROS and genotoxicity pathways. The experiments of cytotoxicity was tested and concludes that the Nd₂O₃ express a moderate and dose dependent effect on cancer cells. The ROS, cell cycle analysis and qPCR showed that Nd₂O₃ exhibit the capability to cells death via ROS generation and genotoxicity study pathways.

Reversible Metal Ion/Complex Binding to Chitin Controlled by Ligand, Redox, and Photochemical Reactions and Active Movement of Chitin on Aquatic Arthropods

There is strong adsorption of metal ions and their complexes to chitin, which depends on both the oxidation and complexation states of many of the said elements (whereas others display chemical reactions detectable via electrochemical methods while being retained by chitin); thus, ad- and desorption at ambient water concentrations (often in the nMol/L range) are controlled by the presence and photochemical properties (concerning Eu and probably U and Ag) of mainly biogenic organic matter (both DOC and POC, and DON). With chitin forming the outer hull of mobile organisms (animals), this biopolymer is expected to take part in metal distribution in aquatic (limnetic and riverine) ecosystems. Having studied the attachment of many different elements to both crayfish and grafted (marine shrimp) chitin, with the highest accumulations observed in Bi, V, Ni, and LREEs, one should consider secondary biochemical transformations which take place at different water and sediment levels. After chitin had been embedded into sediment, methanogenesis (which requires Ni), Bi, and Sb biomethylations and photodesorption in the illuminated water column will occur if there are appropriate organics, causing the vertical separation of Eu from other REEs, at least during the daytime. Eutrophication will enhance both the production and especially the photooxidation rates of organics in water because phosphorylated sugars and lipids are formed quantitatively within min P, which enter water and undergo Eu-mediated photooxidation much more readily. Another biopolymer, gelatin, acts as an inert matrix-enhancing organic photooxidation product via Eu, producing chemical waves, indicating autocatalysis upon light impact. From the redox-related photodesorption of metal analytes from chitin, both sensors and devices for (light-assisted) electrochemical energy conversion are being developed by our workgroup. The electrochemical determination of adsorption thermodynamics on chitin is thus directly linked to its applications in environmental monitoring and technology.

Lanthanides Toxicity in Zebrafish Embryos Are Correlated to Their Atomic Number

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical metallic materials with a broad application in industry and biomedicine. The exponential increase in REEs utilization might elevate the toxicity to aquatic animals if they are released into the water due to uncareful handling. The specific objective of our study is to explore comprehensively the critical factor of a model Lanthanide complex electronic structures for the acute toxicity of REEs based on utilizing zebrafish as a model animal. Based on the 96 h LC₅₀ test, we found that the majority of light REEs display lower LC₅₀ values (4.19–25.17 ppm) than heavy REEs (10.30–41.83 ppm); indicating that they are atomic number dependent. Later, linear regression analyses further show that the average carbon charge on the aromatic ring (aromatic C_avg charge) can be the most significant electronic structural factor responsible for the Lanthanides’ toxicity in zebrafish embryos. Our results confirm a very strong correlation of LC₅₀ to Lanthanide’s atomic numbers (r = 0.72), Milliken charge (r = 0.70), and aromatic C_avg charge (r = −0.85). This most significant correlation suggests a possible toxicity mechanism that the Lanthanide cation’s capability to stably bind to the aromatic ring on the residue of targeted proteins via a covalent chelating bond. Instead, the increasing ionic bond character can reduce REEs’ toxicity. In addition, Lanthanide toxicity was also evaluated by observing the disruption of photo motor response (PMR) activity in zebrafish embryos. Our study provides the first in vivo evidence to demonstrate the correlation between an atomic number of Lanthanide ions and the Lanthanide toxicity to zebrafish embryos.

Mobility and Retention of Rare Earth Elements in Porous Media

There is growing concern that rare earth elements (REEs) will become emerging soil-water contaminants because of their increased use in new technologies and products, which may lead to unavoidable release to the environment. To better understand the environmental behavior of REEs, a comprehensive set of adsorption and column transport experiments was conducted in quartz sand media. The retention and mobility of three representative REEs (La, Gd, and Er) were studied in the presence and absence of humic acid (HA; 5, 20, and 50 mg L^-1) and under a range of pH conditions (5-8). Results show that REE mobility and retention are controlled by the amount of REE-HA complexes formed in a solution, which increases with increasing HA concentrations and solution pH. Gadolinium is the most mobile among the representative REEs, followed by Er and La, corresponding to the amount of (calculated) REE-HA complexes. Increasing HA concentrations in the REE solution inhibits REE retention in both the batch adsorption and column experiments. The same retardation trend was observed for lower HA concentrations (Gd > Er > La). In a fixed HA concentration, HA and REE adsorption decrease simultaneously as the solution pH increases, indicating the co-adsorption of REEs and HA on the sand. Scanning electron microscopy detection of elongated regions attached to the sand, where high REE and carbon (HA) concentrations were measured, further suggests the co-adsorption of REE-HA complexes. Modeling the column experiments shows that the time-dependent attachment is dominant at high HA concentrations, while at lower HA concentrations, both the time-dependent and spontaneous attachments play equal roles. These results provide a quantitative characterization of REE retention and mobility in sand media.

Lanthanum and Gadolinium availability in aquatic mediums: New insights to ecotoxicology and environmental studies

Studies dealing with Rare Earth Elements (REE) ecotoxicological behavior are scattered and with potential conflicting results. Climate change impacts on aquatic biota and is known to modify contaminants toxicokinetic. Nevertheless, the current knowledge on the potential interactions between climate change and REE is virtually non-existent. Therefore, we focus our research on La and Gd as representatives of Light and Heavy REE that also are of great environmental concern. Experiments on different mediums (fresh-, brackish- and seawater) were designed to run at present-day and near-future conditions (T°=+4 °C, pH=△-0.4). Sampling was taken at different time scales from minutes to hours for one day. The main challenge was to evaluate the availability of La and Gd under environmental conditions closely related to climate changes scenarios. Furthermore, this study will contribute to the baseline knowledge by which future research towards understanding REE patterns and toxicity will build upon. Lanthanum and Gd behave differently with salinity. Temperature also affects the availability of dissolved La in freshwater. On the other hand, pH reduction causes the decrease of Gd in freshwater. In this medium, concentrations reduce sharply, presumably due to sorption processes or precipitates. In the brackish water experiment only the dissolved La levels in the Warming (T°=+4 °C) and Warming & Acidification (T°=+4 °C, pH=△0.4) diminished significantly through time. Dissolved La and Gd levels in seawater were relatively constant with time. The speciation of both elements is also of great relevance for ecotoxicological experiments. The trivalent free ions (La3+ and Gd3+) were the most common species in the trials. However, as ionic strength increases, the availability of other complexes rose, which should be subject of great attention for upcoming ecotoxicological studies.
