Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) most likely derived from natural sources were observed in two sediment cores covering the last 100 years in an Amazon estuarine region. A considerable change in the PAHs main source was observed in the 1960s. Before the 1960s, the sources of PAHs seem to be related to biogenic and/or early-diagenetic processes. Concentrations of perylene were higher before the 1960s and suggest that its primary source to the sediments in the Amazon region is linked to a short-term diagenetic transformation of their biogenic precursors. The natural formation of alkylated PAHs in sediments was linked to the methylation of the parental aromatic hydrocarbons due to sediment maturation processes and the dehydrogenation of sterols in the sediments. The relatively rapid reaction occurring in recent sediments of the Amazon region suggests the importance of the microbial community in the transformation of biogenic precursors to alkylated-PAHs in the sediments.

Abstract
Sterols and endocrine-disrupting chemicals were analyzed in two dated sediment cores collected in the Jaguaribe river to determine the recent decades' influence of urbanization and agropastoral activities on the inputs of fecal pollution in a semi-arid region of Brazil. Stigmasterol and sitosterol were the most abundant of the 6 sterols examined in both cores, indicating an important contribution of organic matter from mangrove forests to the study region. Coprostanol presented a continuous increase in concentrations from the 1930s to the 2000s in one core, however, showing higher concentrations (>100 ng g-1) in the upper layers of both cores. The sterols diagnostic ratios indicated fecal pollution through both cores, especially from the 1940s to 1970s. The coprostanol levels followed the variations in population growth in the state of Ceará. Estriol and estrone were the most abundant estrogenic hormones found in both cores. These compounds are probably related to the intense livestock activities in the Ceará state, especially after the 1970s. The baseline levels of fecal sterols and estrogen hormones found in this study possibly represent a previous unimpacted scenario and may be used for future evaluations of fecal pollution from urbanization and livestock activities.

Abstract
The Jundiaí-Potengi Estuary (EJP) is located on the semi-arid coast of northeastern Brazil and is influenced by multiple sources of contamination. The sediment quality of EJP was assessed by using a multi-geochemical approach during the dry and wet seasons. Sediments were analyzed for concentrations of nutrients, metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, hormones (natural and synthetic), and sterols. The results were integrated by multivariate methods. The sediment was altered by the presence of contaminants from anthropogenic and natural sources. The middle and lower estuarine areas were considered more degraded in both seasons. In these regions, metals, hormones, sterols, and PAHs were found, indicating that these regions are severely affected by industrial, sanitary and aquaculture effluents, combustion of fossil fuels, and oil spills. The upstream region was contaminated by pesticides. The contamination pattern along the EJP shows the prevalence of local sources which continuously release the chemicals into the estuary. Worse conditions occurred during the rainy season, when the runoff from urban and rural areas is more intense and carries a greater load of contaminants to the EJP.

Abstract
Trace metals, dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDTs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were quantified in surface sediments from mud depocenters located in the western South Atlantic upper continental margin. There was no anthropogenic trace metal pollution observed, and the higher As values were attributed to high CaCO3 content in the area. The results indicate PCB sources associated with long-range atmospheric transport in addition to past DDT use for agriculture and pest control. PAHs were mainly originated from biomass and fossil fuel combustion, and their distribution is in alignment with the riverine runoff influence in southern region, which is transported towards the northern regions by coastal currents. Higher concentrations of 2-3 ring PAHs and DDTs in shallow and northern stations indicate a coastal influence. This work presents baseline information on the extent of anthropogenic influence in mud depocenters located in the western South Atlantic upper continental margin, showing these locations as potential source to sink of anthropogenic contaminants.

Abstract
18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were evaluated in the Jaguaribe River to explore the influence of grain size, organic carbon, humic and fulvic acids and black carbon on their adsorption onto sediment. The ∑PAHs concentrations variated from 0.6 to 3752.0 ng g-1 with highest concentrations in the estuarine zone. The PAHs predominant source along the river was from mixed sources, mainly related to biomass combustion, small oil spills related to recreational nautical activities and runoff from cities. Organic and inorganic parameters presented influence on PAHs distribution along the river, with humic acid as a determinant factor. These research findings are of importance to an assessment of the fate and transport of PAHs in estuarine systems.

Abstract
Phylogenetic niche conservatism (PNC) shapes the distribution of organisms by constraining lineages to particular climatic conditions. Conversely, if areas with similar climates are geographically isolated, diversification may also be limited by dispersal. Neotropical xeric habitats provide an ideal system to test the relative roles of climate and geography on diversification, as they occur in disjunct areas with similar biotas. Sicariinae sand spiders are intimately associated with these xeric environments, particularly seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) and subtropical deserts/scrublands in Africa (Hexophthalma) and the Neotropics (Sicarius). We explore the role of PNC, geography and biome shifts in their evolution and timing of diversification. We estimated a time-calibrated, total-evidence phylogeny of Sicariinae, and used published distribution records to estimate climatic niche and biome occupancy. Topologies were used for estimating ancestral niches and biome shifts. We used variation partitioning methods to test the relative importance of climate and spatially autocorrelated factors in explaining the spatial variation in phylogenetic structure of Sicarius across the Neotropics. Neotropical Sicarius are ancient and split from their African sister-group around 90 (57-131) million years ago. Most speciation events took place in the Miocene. Sicariinae records can be separated in two groups corresponding to temperate/dry and tropical/seasonally dry climates. The ancestral climatic niche of Sicariinae are temperate/dry areas, with 2-3 shifts to tropical/seasonally dry areas in Sicarius. Similarly, ancestral biomes occupied by the group are temperate and dry (deserts, Mediterranean scrub, temperate grasslands), with 2-3 shifts to tropical, seasonally dry forests and grasslands. Most of the variation in phylogenetic structure is explained by long-distance dispersal limitation that is independent of the measured climatic conditions. Sicariinae have an ancient association to arid lands, suggesting that PNC prevented them from colonizing mesic habitats. However, niches are labile at a smaller scale, with several shifts from deserts to SDTFs. This suggests that PNC and long-distance dispersal limitation played major roles in confining lineages to isolated areas of SDTF/desert over evolutionary history, although shifts between xeric biomes occurred whenever geographical opportunities were presented.

Abstract
Anthropogenic molecular markers were used to assess chemicals inputs and ecological risks associated from multiple sources to sediments in one of the largest tropical mangrove forests of South America, with a particular focus on lesser studied compounds resulting from rural activities. Total concentrations ranged from 23.4 to 228.2 ng g-1 for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑PAHs), 750.4 to 5912.5 ng g-1 for aliphatic hydrocarbons (∑AHs), 32.4 to 696.6 ng g-1 for pesticides (∑pesticides), 23.1 to 2109.7 ng g-1 for coprostanol and sterols (∑sterols), 139.3 to 580.2 ng g-1 for naturals hormones (∑natural hormones) and 334.1 to 823.4 ng g-1 for synthetics hormones (∑synthetic hormones). The PAHs and AHs used as traditional anthropogenic markers showed a mixture between natural and anthropogenic sources, related mainly to inputs from higher plants, phytoplankton and both, biomass and petroleum combustion. Rural activities linked to agricultural pest control are the predominant source of pesticides, although minor inputs from pesticides used in urban public health campaigns and household activities were also detected. Synthetic hormones levels are two to three orders of magnitude greater than natural hormones levels and no correlations were observed between the main sewage markers and synthetic hormone concentrations, rural activities such as animal husbandry, which use drugs in management, may be the predominant anthropogenic sources of these compounds in the region. Traditional markers failed to detect ecological risks in rural areas, where synthetic substances (e.g. pesticides and hormones) are widely used and introduced in the environment.

Abstract
Molecular markers are useful tools to characterize natural and anthropogenic impacts on coastal zones. Distribution of n-alkanes showed that the Pacoti River was predominantly influenced by terrigenous input. Distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) indices showed a mix of natural sources, especially pyrogenic influences. Sterol and hormone levels showed sewage discharge. Integrated geographic assessment showed that pyrogenic process and sewage discharge are predominant along the river because of natural and different anthropogenic activities. The upstream region is influenced by rural activities such as livestock and discharge from the sewage treatment plant, whereas the estuarine region is influenced by urban and industrial activities, predominantly the discharge of treated or untreated sewage, vehicle traffic, and manufacture of red ceramics. On the other hand, on the river mouth, there is the predominance of aquaculture activities. Traditional anthropogenic markers are not sufficient for producing a comprehensive assessment of anthropogenic impacts in areas with multiple activities.

Abstract
Plant-derived essential oils can be used as insecticides for vector control. However, to establish their safety, it is necessary to perform toxicological studies. Herein, we evaluated the chemical composition and insecticidal activity of the essential oil from the leaves of Croton argyrophyllus on the third- and fourth-instar larvae and adult Aedes aegypti (L., 1762). We also evaluated the acute toxicity of the essential oil in adult female Mus musculus. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) and 90 (LC90) of C. argyrophyllus essential oil on larvae of Ae. aegypti were 0.31 and 0.70 mg ml-1, respectively, and 5.92 and 8.94 mg ml-1, respectively, on Ae. aegypti adults. The major components of the essential oil were spathulenol (22.80%), (E)-caryophyllene (15.41%), α-pinene (14.07%), and bicyclogermacrene (10.43%). It also displayed acute toxicity in adults of Mus musculus; the intraperitoneal and oral lethal dose 50 (LD50) were 2,000 mg kg-1 and 2,500 mg kg-1, respectively. The results showed that the essential oil from C. argyrophyllus leaves has insecticidal activity on Ae. aegypti larvae and adults at an average lethal concentration below the median lethal dose needed to cause acute toxicity in the common mouse.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) mRNA expression in nondialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, comparing with data from hemodialysis (HD) patients and healthy individuals. METHODS Twenty nondialysis CKD patients (62.0 ± 8.1 years old, 11 men, estimated glomerular filtration rate of 36.8 ± 13.6 mL/min/1.73 m(2)), twenty HD patients (55.0 ± 15.2 years old, 13 men, and dialysis vintage of 76.5 ± 46.3 months) and eleven healthy individuals (50.9 ± 8.0 years old, 6 men) were enrolled in the study. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated and processed for the evaluation of expression of NF-κB and Nrf2 by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Nrf2 mRNA expression was significantly higher in nondialysis (1.12 ± 0.57) when compared to HD patients (0.58 ± 0.35, p = 0,006) but similar to healthy individuals (1.13 ± 0.64). Inversely, NF-κB mRNA expression was lower in nondialysis (1.21 ± 0.71) when compared to HD patients (2.08 ± 0.7, p < 0.0001) and similar to healthy individuals (1.04 ± 0.22). Nrf2 mRNA was positively correlated with NF-κB mRNA expression in nondialysis CKD patients (r = 0.52, p = 0.02) and healthy individuals (r = 0.77, p < 0.006). By contrast, Nrf2 mRNA was inversely correlated with NF-κB mRNA expression (r = -0.65, p = 0.003) in HD patients. CONCLUSION Nondialysis CKD patients may conserve regular homeostatic balance between Nrf2 and NF-κB expressions, being comparable to healthy individuals. However, HD patients seem to have Nrf2 downregulation and NF-κB upregulation. Thus, the association among Nrf2 and NF-κB expressions and nutritional status, kidney disease progression or immune deregulation deserve further investigation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance to ten antimicrobial agents and the presence of bla ( TEM1 ) gene of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from three natural oligotrophic lakes with varying degrees of anthropogenic influence. A total of 272 indigenous bacteria were recovered on eosin methylene blue medium; they were characterized for antimicrobial resistance and identified taxonomically by homology search and phylogenetic comparisons. Based on 16S ribosomal RNA sequences analysis, 97% of the isolates were found to be Gram-negative bacteria; they belonged to 11 different genera. Members of the genera Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, and Pseudomonas predominated. Most of the bacteria were resistant to at least one antimicrobial. The incidence of resistance to beta-lactams, chloramphenicol, and mercury was high, whereas resistance to tetracycline, aminoglycosides, and nalidixic acid was low. There was a great frequency of multiple resistances among the isolates from the three lakes, although no significant differences were found among the disturbed and reference lakes. The ampicillin resistance mechanism of 71% of the isolates was due to the gene bla ( TEM1 ). Our study suggests that multiresistant Gram-negative bacteria and the bla ( TEM1 ) gene are common in freshwater oligotrophic lakes, which are subject to different levels of anthropogenic inputs.

Abstract
The tyrannids are one of the most diverse groups of birds in the world, and the most numerous suboscine family in the Neotropics. Reflecting such diversity, many taxonomic issues arise in this group, mainly due to morphological similarities, even among phylogenetically distant species. Other issues appear at higher taxonomic levels, mostly brought up by genetic studies, making systematics a rather inconclusive issue. This study looks into the use of DNA barcodes method to discriminate and identify Tyrannidae species occurring in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes of Brazil. We analysed 266 individuals of 71 tyrant-flycatcher species from different geographical locations by sequencing 542 bp of the mtDNA COI gene. The great majority of the analysed species showed exclusive haplotypes, usually displaying low intraspecific diversity and high interspecific divergence. Only Casiornis fuscus and Casiornis rufus, suggested in some studies to belong to a single species, could not be phylogenetically separated. High intraspecific diversity was observed among Elaenia obscura individuals, which can suggest the existence of cryptic species in this taxon. The same was also observed for Suiriri suiriri, considered by some authors to comprise at least two species, and by others to be divided into three subspecies. Additionally, the use of sequences from voucher specimens allowed us to correct four misidentifications that had happened in the field. Our findings suggest a great power of the COI barcodes to discriminate species of the Tyrannidae family that are found in Brazil.

Abstract
The Thamnophilus punctatus complex has been recently reviewed on the basis of morphological and vocal characters, and is divided in six different species. Two of the new species, although well defined on the basis of morphological differences, could not be unambiguously distinguished through their loud songs. The Planalto Slaty-antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and the Sooretama Slaty-antshrike (T. ambiguus) are most easily distinguished by subtle and localized changes in plumage colors of males and females. In the present study we used sequences of the control region, Cytochrome b, and ND2 genes, of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to evaluate the levels of molecular differentiation between these two species. The mean pairwise distance between the two species was 3.8%, while it varied from 2.7% to 4.9% for each mtDNA region. Although extensive variation was also detected among haplotypes within species, especially for T. ambiguus, we suggest that the genetic divergence found between T. ambiguus and T. pelzelni is high enough to corroborate the separate species status of these two antbird taxa.

Abstract
Forest fragmentation affects bird populations in many ways, modifying the composition of communities and favouring open country species. The Atlantic Forest is considered one of the most important biomes in the world, due to its great biodiversity, accelerated rates of deforestation, and high endemism. Despite these characteristics, few studies have evaluated the effects of forest fragmentation in the genetic structure of Atlantic forest bird populations. So, this study aims to verify the effects of forest fragmentation in the genetic population structure of Conopophaga lineata, through RAPD markers. To achieve this goal, 89 C. lineata individuals were captured in nine Atlantic Forest fragments in Minas Gerais State. The RAPD data indicate that forest fragmentation has not affected the genetic variation of C. lineata populations (Mann-Whitney U=3.50; p=0.11). Great part of the genetic variability of this species is found within populations and it was not observed a correlation between genetic and geographic distance (Mantel test t=0.6250; p=073). UPGMA analyses did not show defined clades and all branches showed low statistical support. The low population differentiation observed in this species can be due to a high gene flow among populations or a recent fragmentation. Thus, the current diversity status of C. lineata populations indicates that this species is not significantly affected by fragmentation. However, more genetic studies are essential to improve conservation strategies of Brazilian Atlantic Forest birds.

Abstract
We report on the use of dynamic scale theory and fractal analyses in the study of distinct growth stages of layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and a side-chain-substituted azobenzene copolymer (Ma-co-DR13). The LBL films were adsorbed on glass substrates and characterized with atomic force microscopy with the Ma-co-DR13 at the top layer. The granular morphology exhibited by the films allowed the observation of the growth process inside and outside the grains. The growth outside the grains was found to follow the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model, with fractal dimensions of ca. 2.6. One could expect that inside the grains the morphology would be close to a Euclidian surface with fractal dimension of ca. 2 for any growth stage. The latter, however, was observed only for thicker films containing more than 10 bilayers. For thinner films the morphology was well described by a self-affine fractal. Such dependence of the growth behavior with the film thickness is associated with a more complete coverage of adsorption sites in thicker films due to diffusion of polymer molecules.

Abstract
The fabrication of varied molecular architectures in layer-by-layer (LbL) films is exploited to control the photoluminescence (PL) of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) in an unprecedented way. This was achieved by controlling the Förster energy transfer between PPV layers (donors) and layers of a commercial azodye, Brilliant Yellow (BY) (acceptors). Energy transfer was controlled by inserting spacer layers of inert polymers between PPV and BY layers and by photoaligning the BY molecules via trans-cis-trans isomerization. The PPV/BY LbL films displayed polarized PL whose intensity could be varied almost continuously by changing the time of photoalignment, which was carried out by impinging a linearly polarized laser light simultaneously to the PL experiments. For PPV/BY films with no spacer layers, PL was completely quenched, but its intensity increased with the number of spacing layers. Further increase in PL was obtained by photoaligning the BY molecules perpendicularly to the PPV molecules. This minimizes energy transfer, since Förster processes are directional, dipole-dependent resonant transfers. Energy transfer is also controlled by imparting a preferential orientation of the PPV chains on PPV/BY LbL films deposited onto flexible Teflon substrates that may be stretched.

Abstract
Among azoospermic and severely oligozoospermic men, 7-15% present microdeletions of a region on the long arm of the Y chromosome that has been called AZF (azoospermia factor). Because these deletions present varying relative frequencies in different populations, we decided to ascertain whether their presence was correlated with specific Y-chromosome haplotypes. For that, we evaluated 51 infertile Israeli men, 9 of whom had microdeletions in AZF. Haplotypes were identified using a hierarchical system with eight biallelic DNA markers. We also checked for the presence of the deletion marker 50f2/C, which was absent in all seven patients with isolated AZFc deletion and also in the one patient with isolated AZFb deletion, suggesting that these microdeletions overlap. As expected, haplogroup J was the most common (47%), followed by equal frequencies of haplogroups Y* (xDE, J, K), P* (xR1a, R1b8), K* (xP), and E. In six patients with AZFc deficiencies of comparable size, three belonged to haplogroup J, two belonged to haplogroup P* (xR1a, R1b8), and one belonged to haplogroup R1a. Also, there were no significant differences in the haplotype frequencies between the groups with and without microdeletions. Thus we did not identify any association of a specific haplogroup with predisposition to de novo deletion of the AZF region in the Israeli population.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The prolonged life span of populations is the obvious reason for an increasing proportion of elderly patients with acute renal failure (ARF). The role of age as a factor indicative of a poor prognosis is a matter of controversy. OBJECTIVE To evaluate this role we have analyzed the final outcome of elderly patients with ARF treated in our Nephrology Service. MATERIAL AND METHODS Among 361 ARF cases prospectively studied during a two-year period (January 1995 to December 1996), 130 (36%) occurred in patients over 70 years of age. Etiology, clinical course and prognosis were analyzed. The average age was 76.0 +/- 4.7 years, varying from 70 to 94 years; 84 patients (65%) were male, and surgical causes accounted for 51% of geriatric ARF. RESULTS The most frequent causes were: ischemic (volume depletion, arterial hypotension, and/or low cardiac output) in 48 patients (38%), sepsis in 40 (312%), nephrotoxic drugs in 46 (35%) and obstructive abnormalities in 10 (7.7%); in other 14 (11%) they were diagnosed more than a causal agent. Oliguria was present in 37. 2% (81 patients), and dialysis was needed in 50 patients (39%). The mortality in the population with age below 70 years was 43% and in the elderly patients was 53.8%; total mortality was similar in both groups of patients (p=0.085). Oliguria, need for dialysis, presence of surgical causes of ARF, and ARF acquired within the intensive care unit were associated with poor prognosis in elderly group. CONCLUSION We concluded that the percentile of elderly patients with ARF is elevated; they presented mortality about of 50%, and this is not superior to the observed in the youngest population; oliguria, dialysis need, ICU cares and surgery are factors of unfavorable prognostic in these patients.

Abstract
We have identified a novel polymorphic L1 retroposon insertion, designated LY1, in the centromeric alphoid array of the human Y chromosome. The element belongs to the transpositionally active Ta subset and its presence is compatible with normal centromere function. It was found at highest frequency in China, where it accounts for 23% of the Han sample, and was present at low frequencies in the surrounding areas, but was not found at all outside Asia. Chromosomes carrying LY1 show considerable microsatellite diversity, suggesting an ancient origin for the lineage at approximately 10 000 years ago (with wide confidence limits), but only limited subsequent migration.

Abstract
In this work, we analyze several characteristics influencing the low variability of the microsatellite DYS19 in the major founder Amerindian Y chromosome lineage containing the point mutation DYS199-T. Variation of DYS19 was compared with that of five other Y-linked tetranucleotide repeat loci (DYS389A, DYS389B, DYS390, DYS391, and DYS393) in the DYS199-T lineage. All the other microsatellites showed significantly higher levels of variability than DYS19 as measured by gene diversity and repeat number variance. Moreover, we had previously shown that DYS19 had high diversity in Brazilians and in several other populations worldwide. Thus, the slow DYS19 evolution in the DYS199-T lineage seems to be both locus and allele specific. To understand the slow DYS19 evolutionary rate, the microsatellite loci were compared according to their mapping on the Y chromosome and also on the basis of structural aspects such as the base composition of the repeat motif and flanking regions and the degree of perfection and size (repeat number) of the variable blocks. The only observed difference that might be related to the low DYS19 variability is its small average number of repeats, a value expected to be closer to the founder DYS19 allele in the DYS199-T lineage. These data were also compared to other derived Y lineages. The Tat-C lineage displayed a lower DYS19 variability correlated to a small average repeat number, while in the DYS234-G lineage, a high DYS19 variability was found associated to a larger average repeat number. This approach reveals that evolution of Y microsatellites in lineages defined by slowly evolving markers, such as point mutations, can be greatly influenced by the size (number of repeats of the variable block) of the founder allele in each microsatellite locus. Thus lineage-dating methods using microsatellite variation should be practiced with great care.

Abstract
Y chromosomal DNA polymorphisms were used to investigate Pleistocene male migrations to the American continent. In a worldwide sample of 306 men, we obtained 32 haplotypes constructed with the variation found in 30 distinct polymorphic sites. The major Y haplotype present in most Native Americans was traced back to recent ancestors common with Siberians, namely, the Kets and Altaians from the Yenissey River Basin and Altai Mountains, respectively. Going further back, the next common ancestor gave rise also to Caucasoid Y chromosomes, probably from the central Eurasian region. This study, therefore, suggests a predominantly central Siberian origin for Native American paternal lineages for those who could have migrated to the Americas during the Upper Pleistocene.

Abstract
CONTEXT The drawing up of adequate Public Health action planning to address the true needs of the population would increase the chances of effectiveness and decrease unnecessary expenses. OBJECTIVE To identify homogeneous regions in the UNIFESP/EPM healthcare center (HCC) coverage area based on sociodemographic indicators and to relate them to causes of deaths in 1995. DESIGN Secondary data analysis. SETTING HCC coverage area; primary care. SAMPLE Sociodemographic indicators were obtained from special tabulations of the Demographic Census of 1991. MAIN MEASURES Proportion of children and elderly in the population; family providers' education level (maximum: > 15 years, minimum: < 1 year) and income level (maximum: > 20 minimum wages, minimum: < 1 minimum wage); proportional mortality distribution RESULTS The maximum income permitted the construction of four homogeneous regions, according to income ranking. Although the proportion of children and of elderly did not vary significantly among the regions, minimum income and education showed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) difference between the first region (least affluent) and the others. A clear trend of increasing maximum education was observed across the regions. Mortality also differed in the first region, with deaths generated by possibly preventable infections. CONCLUSION The inequalities observed may contribute to primary health prevention.

Abstract
We have used Y-chromosomal polymorphisms to trace paternal lineages in Polynesians by use of samples previously typed for mtDNA variants. A genealogical approach utilizing hierarchical analysis of eight rare-event biallelic polymorphisms, seven microsatellite loci, and internal structural analysis of the hypervariable minisatellite, MSY1, has been used to define three major paternal-lineage clusters in Polynesians. Two of these clusters, both defined by novel MSY1 modular structures and representing 55% of the Polynesians studied, are also found in coastal Papua New Guinea. Reduced Polynesian diversity, relative to that in Melanesians, is illustrated by the presence of several examples of identical MSY1 codes and microsatellite haplotypes within these lineage clusters in Polynesians. The complete lack of Y chromosomes having the M4 base substitution in Polynesians, despite their prevalence (64%) in Melanesians, may also be a result of the multiple bottleneck events during the colonization of this region of the world. The origin of the M4 mutation has been dated by use of two independent methods based on microsatellite-haplotype and minisatellite-code diversity. Because of the wide confidence limits on the mutation rates of these loci, the M4 mutation cannot be conclusively dated relative to the colonization of Polynesia, 3,000 years ago. The other major lineage cluster found in Polynesians, defined by a base substitution at the 92R7 locus, represents 27% of the Polynesians studied and, most probably, originates in Europe. This is the first Y-chromosomal evidence of major European admixture with indigenous Polynesian populations and contrasts sharply with the picture given by mtDNA evidence.

Abstract
We have identified a new T-->C transition on the human Y chromosome. C-allele chromosomes have been found only in a subset of the populations from Asia and northern Europe and reach their highest frequencies in Yakut, Buryats, and Finns. Examination of the microsatellite haplotypes of the C-allele chromosomes suggests that the mutation occurred recently in Asia. The Y chromosome thus provides both information about population relationships in Asia and evidence for a substantial paternal genetic contribution of Asians to northern European populations such as the Finns.

Abstract
We surveyed several human populations worldwide with three PCR-based polymorphisms located in the human Y chromosome: the alphoid heteroduplex [alpha(h)] polymorphic system, the DYS19 microsatellite locus, and a polymorphic Alu insertion (YAP). By typing with the former two polymorphisms [alpha(h) and DYS19] we found 46 different haplotypes in 364 males from several populations worldwide. There were significant geographic differences in the distribution of the haplotypes, several of which were seen in only one population and can be used as populational markers in future surveys. The haplotypic diversity in major ethnic groups revealed high levels in Greater Asians, followed by Africans and Caucasians, and a very low diversity was seen in Amerindians. The discrimination probability of such haplotypes for a random sample of Brazilian Caucasians was 0.82, suggesting great potential usefulness in forensic studies. The parsimonious relationship between different alpha(h) types and the addition of the YAP polymorphism data allowed the construction of an informative picture of the origin and evolution of the antiquity of the alpha(h) polymorphism. The DYS19 allele diversity related to each alpha(h) type allowed a crude estimation of the antiquity of many alpha(h) types. These ancient alpha(h) types were present in different populations suggesting a common ancestor that could antedate the first out-of-Africa migrations.

Abstract
We have studied the allele frequency distribution of the microsatellite locus DYS19 in several populations with different geographical origins worldwide. Three new alleles were found. In addition, remarkable geographic and ethnic differences were observed in the allele frequency profiles and DNA marker (gene) diversity among populations and major ethnic groups. Amerindians showed an overwhelming predominance of the A allele, while in Caucasians the B allele was modal, and in Greater Asians and Africans allele C became predominant. Even within these geographic regions there were significant gradients, as exemplified by the decreasing frequency profile of the B allele from Great Britain over Germany to Slovakia. Thus, DYS19 emerges as a useful tool for studying the structure and dynamics of human populations.

Abstract
We have developed a system for revealing informative and useful haplotypes for the human Y chromosome using PCR. Variant alphoid satellite DNA subunits were amplified and analysed by digestion with HindIII to score a restriction site polymorphism, or on polyacrylamide gels to reveal 13 heteroduplex haplotypes. Heteroduplexes are double-stranded DNA molecules containing mismatches; the haplotype is the combination of alleles on the same chromosome. Structural studies showed that the heteroduplexes analysed here were formed from loci at the left (short arm) and right (long arm) edges of the centromeric alphoid array which differed by a 4-bp insertion/deletion and several point mutations. Consequently, many haplotypes may have arisen only once and are useful for evolutionary studies.

Abstract
A multicentre study concerned with the health needs of the elderly population living in urban areas and coordinated by the Panamerican Health Organization was undertaken in 6 Latin-American countries. In Brazil, 1,602 elderly residents (of 60 years of age and over) in the District of S. Paulo, constituting a multistage random sample stratified by socioeconomic status, participated in a household survey using a multidemensional functional assessment questionnaire. The results showed a highly deprived population (70% had a per capita income of less than US $ 100 per month), living mostly in multigenerational households (59% were living with children and/or grandchildren), with a high prevalence of chronic physical illnesses (only 14% referred no illness) and psychiatric disorders (27% were considered psychiatric cases), a high proportion of them showing a loss of autonomy (47% needed help in performing at least one of the activities of daily living). The results are put into perspective concerning future needs in terms of specialized health services and social support for the growing population of elderly people in Brazil.

Abstract
A polymorphic microsatellite (Y-27H39) based on a (GATA)n repeat was recently discovered on the short arm of the human Y chromosome. We have used a simple technique based on polymerase chain reaction amplification and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by highly sensitive silver staining to study the inheritance, the genetic stability and the allele frequency distribution of this polymorphism in the Brazilian population. We have analyzed 100 randomly chosen Caucasian Brazilian father-son pairs with established paternity. Five alleles, four base-pairs apart, were easily distinguishable. Their frequencies were: A (186 bp), 0.19; B (190 bp), 0.49; C (194 bp), 0.24; D (198 bp), 0.07; E (202 bp), 0.01. In all father-son pairs, there was complete allelic concordance. From these data, the probability of discrimination for forensic cases and the average probability of exclusion for paternity cases were both calculated to be 0.66.

Abstract
Because a son's genotype at a Y-linked locus uniquely specifies his father's genotype at that locus irrespective of the maternal contribution, Y-linked polymorphisms show increased exclusion power over autosomal polymorphisms in paternity cases involving a male child. This advantage is even more obvious when the alleged father is deceased or otherwise unavailable for testing. In this situation, any individual connected by patrilineage to the alleged father may be tested in his place. The usefulness of the Y-linked tetranucleotide repeat locus Y-27H39 in deficiency cases was evaluated in a set of 41 families that had a deceased alleged father and that had been tested at GENE/MG with multilocal and unilocal DNA fingerprinting probes. In sixteen of these cases the proband (child tested) was male and there were male relatives. In the thirteen cases in which paternity was included, Y-27H39 would contribute significantly to the paternity index. In one of three cases in which there was exclusion by fingerprinting probes there was also exclusion by Y-27H39. Thus, Y-27H39 is useful in deficiency paternity cases and will be specially valuable in situations where autosomal polymorphisms have limited power, such as when there is only one male living relative of the deceased father. However, our experience is that Y-linked probes can only be applied in approximately 40% of cases.

Abstract
The isomeric configuration of the 3,4-didehydroretinal chromophore of goldfish porphyropsin was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and by the regeneration of this visual pigment with authentic isomers of 3,4-didehydroretinal. A nonisomerizing, quantitative method using hydroxylamine and methylene chloride was employed to extract the 3,4-didehyroretinal chromophore from the rod outer segment membrane (containing the porphyropsin). When this extracted chromophore was injected into the HPLC, only a single major peak was observed and this peak coeluted with the authentic 11-cis 3,4-didehydroretinyl oxime. This suggests that the chromophore of goldfish porphyropsin is 11-cis 3,4-didehydroretinal. When the bleached rod outer segments (containing the opsin) were incubated with different 3,4-didehydroretinal isomers (13-cis, 11-cis, 9-cis, and all-trans), only the 11-cis isomer resulted in the degeneration of porphyropsin. This also suggests that the porphyropsin chromophore exists in the 11-cis configuration.
