Abstract
Physicochemical parameters, microbial diversity using sequencing and amplicon, and metabolite concentrations from Ginger Bug and Ginger Beer were characterized. Furthermore, the sensory aspects of the beverage were determined. The longer ginger bug activation time (96 h) resulted in higher production of organic acids and alcohols, increased phenolic and volatile compounds concentration, greater microbial diversity, and increased lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. In the same way, the longer fermentation time (14 days) of ginger beer resulted in higher ethanol content, volatile compounds, and phenolic compounds, in addition to better sensory characteristics. Our results showed that ginger beer produced with ginger bug and fermented for 14 days showed better volatile and phenolic compound profiles, physicochemical parameters, microbial diversity, and sensory characteristics.

Abstract
Aeromonas sp. is a Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, oxidase-positive, facultative anaerobic bacterium and a natural contaminant found in aquatic environments. Some species can invade, colonize, and damage host cells due to the presence of virulence factors, such as flagella, elastase, hemolysins, aerolysins, adhesins, enterotoxins, phospholipases and lipases, that lead to pathogenic activities. Consequently, can cause many health disorders that range from gastrointestinal problems, enteric infections, and ulcers to hemorrhagic septicemia. Aeromonas has been isolated and identified from a variety of sources, including drinking water and ready-to-eat foods (fish, meat, fresh vegetables, dairy products, and others). Some species of this opportunistic pathogen are resistant to several commercial antibiotics, including some used as a last resort for treatment, which represents a major challenge in the clinical segment. Antimicrobial resistance can be attributed to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics by society in aquaculture and horticulture. In addition, antibiotic resistance is attributed to plasmid transfer between microorganisms and horizontal gene transfer. This review aimed to (i) verify the occurrence of Aeromonas species in water and food intended for human consumption; (ii) identify the methods used to detect Aeromonas species; (iii) report on the virulence genes carried by different species; and (iv) report on the antimicrobial resistance of this genus in the last 5 years of research. Additionally, we present the existence of Aeromonas spp. resistant to antimicrobials in food and drinking water represents a potential threat to public health.

Abstract
Eriocitrin (eriodictyol 7-O-β-rutinoside), a citrus flavonoid from lemon juice and peel, reduces hyperglycemia and improves diabetes-related biomarkers in prediabetes patients. Eriocitrin is first metabolized by gut microbiota, producing energy for gut cells and short chain fatty acids that play a relevant role in glycemic control. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of Eriomin®, a nutraceutical composed of 70% eriocitrin, 5% hesperidin, and 4% naringin, on the microbiota of prediabetic patients. Patients were randomly divided into two groups and received unlabeled capsules of Eriomin® (200 mg/day) or placebo during 12 weeks. After treatment with the nutraceutical, it was a 6% decrease of hyperglycemia and 22% increase of GLP-1 blood levels of (p < .05). The profile of intestinal microorganisms, obtained by 16S rRNA sequencing of the patients' feces extract, showed changes in microbiota composition, such as lower growth of Firmicutes and less abundance of the Lachnospiraceae family. The family Ruminococcaceae increased and Blautia genus reduced with Eriomin® supplementation. In additional, Blautia was positively correlated with hyperglycemia reduction. In conclusion, the nutraceutical Eriomin® moderately reduced the growth of microorganisms associated with intestinal dysbiosis and increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria. Changes promoted mainly by the flavonoid eriocitrin in the microbiota were related to a lower glycemic level and increased production of GLP-1 in patients with prediabetes.

Abstract
Mini-roses (Rosa chinensis Jacq.) is largely used in salty dishes and desserts. This study evaluated instrumental color, sugars, organic acids, phenolics, volatiles, and the indigenous microbiota (fungi and bacteria) in edible mini-roses farmed in discarded fruits biocompost and animal manure systems. A descriptive sensory analysis of flowers was also performed. Mini-roses farmed in biocompost had higher luminosity and intensity of instrumental red color, a higher concentration of phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins related to red color, and fructose than mini-roses farmed in animal manure (p < 0.05). Furthermore, mini-roses farmed in biocompost had higher concentrations of various volatiles (p < 0.05), including hexyl acetate and cis-3 -hexenyl butyrate related to the fruity aroma. Bacterial groups related to plant growth-promoting such as Stenotrophomonas and endophilic fungal groups such as Eurotiales sp, Pleosporales sp were found in higher abundance (p < 0.05) in mini-roses farmed in biocompost. Mini-rose farmed in biocompost also received higher score (p < 0.05) for fruity aroma and red color than mini-rose mini-roses farmed in animal manure. Results indicate that farming mini-roses using biocompost from discarded fruits impacts the synthesis of phenolics and volatiles, resulting in a more intense fruity aroma and red color. Findings also suggest that the microbiota of mini-roses farmed in biocompost or animal manure do not represent a major risk for the safety of these products.

Abstract
Over recent decades, hydrocarbon concentrations have been augmented in soil and water, mainly derived from accidents or operations that input crude oil and petroleum into the environment. Different techniques for remediation have been proposed and used to mitigate oil contamination. Among the available environmental recovery approaches, bioremediation stands out since these hydrocarbon compounds can be used as growth substrates for microorganisms. In turn, microorganisms can play an important role with significant contributions to the stabilization of impacted areas. In this review, we present the current knowledge about responses from natural microbial communities (using DNA barcoding, multiomics, and functional gene markers) and bioremediation experiments (microcosm and mesocosm) conducted in the presence of petroleum and chemical dispersants in different samples, including soil, sediment, and water. Additionally, we present metabolic mechanisms for aerobic/anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation and alternative pathways, as well as a summary of studies showing functional genes and other mechanisms involved in petroleum biodegradation processes.

Abstract
Burn trauma is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity. None of the currently available formulas for mortality prediction take into account the impact of comorbidities on burn patients' outcome. In this study, we evaluate the impact of comorbidities on in-hospital mortality and prolonged length of hospital stay (≥30 days). A retrospective analysis of burn patients' medical records, over a 5-year period, was undertaken. A total of 677 patients were included. The mortality rate was 6.5%. Deceased patients and survivors with length of hospital stay (LOS) of 30 or more days were significantly older, had larger %TBSA burned, were more likely to have inhalation injury and comorbidities, and had higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) scores. On the multivariate logistic regression models, age, %TBSA burned, CCI score and the presence of inhalation injury were independently associated with mortality and prolonged LOS. In conclusion, the authors suggest that the inclusion of comorbidities should be considered on burn admission scores in an attempt to better predict burn mortality.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of feeding paraprobiotics obtained by six processes [heat, ultrasound, high pH, low pH, irradiation and supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2)] on biochemical parameters and intestinal microbiota of Wistar male rats. Daily administration of paraprobiotics did not affect (p ≥ 0.05) the food intake, body weight, glucose and triglycerides levels, expression of antioxidant enzymes or thermal shock proteins in comparison to the control. Bifidobacterium lactis inactivated by irradiation and supercritical CO2 decreased the total cholesterol levels in serum (p < 0.05). Bifidobacterium lactis inactivated by supercritical CO2 increased the albumin and creatinine levels, while decreased the HDL-cholesterol levels (p < 0.05). Clostridiales (45.6-56%), Bacteroidales (31.9-44.2%) and Lactobacillales (3.9-7.8%) corresponded to the major orders in paraprobiotic groups. The properties of paraprobiotics are dependent on the method of inactivation, the intensity of the method employed and on the strain used.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the impact of the food matrix (orange juice and yogurt) on the effects of the spore-forming probiotic microorganism Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 6086 in health parameters and gastrointestinal tract (gut) bacterial diversity in Wistar male rats. Rats (n = 48) were randomly distributed into six groups. The groups were the Control (which received sterile distilled water), Juice (which received orange juice), Yogurt (which received yogurt), Probiotic Bacillus (which received B. coagulans GBI-30 6086 in distilled water), Probiotic Juice (which received orange juice with B. coagulans GBI-30 6086), and Probiotic Yogurt (which received yogurt with B. coagulans GBI-30 6086). Each animal belonging to the different groups was treated for 21 days. The daily administration of probiotic juice or probiotic yogurt did not affect the rats’ food or body weight. Rats fed with Probiotic Yogurt showed lower glucose and triglycerides levels (p < 0.05) in comparison to the control group (p < 0.05), while no changes in these parameters were observed in the rats fed with Probiotic Juice. Rats fed with Probiotic Yogurt showed a higher gut bacterial diversity than the control group (p < 0.05), and higher abundance (p < 0.05) of Vibrionales, Enterobacteriales, Burkholderiales, Erysipelotrichales, and Bifidobacteriales compared to all other groups. No changes were observed in the expression levels of antioxidant enzymes or heat shock protein 70 of rats fed with probiotic yogurt or probiotic juice. Results reveal that the consumption of yogurt containing B. coagulans GBI-30 6086 decreases triglycerides and glucose levels and positively impacts the gut bacterial ecology in healthy rats. These animal model findings indicate that the matrix also impacts the functionality of foods carrying spore-forming probiotics. Besides, this research indicates that yogurt is also a suitable food carrier of Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 6086.

Abstract
During the last decade, there was a substantial increase in the research on metal-doped oxide semiconductor nanoparticles due to advances in the engineering of nanomaterials and their potential application in spintronics, biomedicine and photocatalysis fields. In this regard, doping a nanomaterial is a powerful tool to tune its physicochemical properties. The aim of this work is to shine a new light on the role of the neighbouring elements on the oxidation state of the Ce-impurity, from both experimental and theoretical points of view. Herein, we present an accurate study of the mechanisms involved in the oxidation states of the Ce-ions during the doping process of SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction measurements have displayed the tetragonal rutile-type SnO2 phase in all samples. However, the Bragg's peak (111) and (220) located at 2θ ∼29° and ∼47° evidence the formation of a secondary CeO2 phase for samples with Ce content up to 10%. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements, at Ce L3 edge, were performed on the NPs as a function of Ce content. The results show, on one side, the coexistence of Ce3+ and Ce4+ states in all samples; and on the other side, a clear reduction in the Ce3+ population driven by the increase of Ce content. It is shown that this is induced by the neighboring cation, and confirmed by magnetic measurements. The monotonic damping of the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio experimentally, was connected with theoretical calculations via density functional theory by simulating a variety of point defects composed of Ce impurities and surrounding oxygen vacancies. We found that the number of oxygen vacancies around the Ce-ions is the main ingredient to change the Ce oxidation state, and hence the magnetic properties of Ce-doped SnO2 NPs. The presented results pave the way for handling the magnetic properties of oxides through the control of the oxidation state of impurities.

Abstract
The combination of different microorganisms and their metabolisms makes the use of microbial consortia in bioremediation processes a useful approach. In this sense, this study aimed at structuring and selecting a marine microbial consortium for Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) detoxification and decolorization. Experimental design was applied to improve the culture conditions, and metatranscriptomic analysis to understand the enzymatic pathways. A promising consortium composed of Mucor racemosus CBMAI 847, Marasmiellus sp. CBMAI 1062, Bacillus subtilis CBMAI 707, and Dietzia maris CBMAI 705 was selected. This consortium showed 52% of detoxification and 86% of decolorization in the validation assays after seven days of incubation in the presence of 500 ppm of RBBR. Reduction in RBBR color and toxicity were achieved by biosorption and microbial metabolisms. Metatranscriptomic data indicate that the consortium was able to decolorize and breakdown the RBBR molecule using a coordinated action of oxidases, oxygenases, and hydrolases. Epoxide hydrolases and glyoxalases expression could be associated with the decrease in toxicity. The efficiency of this marine microbial consortium suggests their use in bioremediation processes of textile effluents.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of consumption of wheat-durum pasta added of Bifidobacterium animalis inactivated by gamma-irradiation (paraprobiotic) on health and gut microbiota of rats. Twenty-one male rats were divided into three groups as follow: control (Control) receiving standard diet; pasta control (PC) receiving diet containing pasta, and paraprobiotic pasta Bifidobacterium-irradiated (PPBI), receiving paraprobiotic pasta. The serum levels of glucose and total cholesterol were reduced (p < 0.05) in PPBI when compared to the Control (p < 0.05). PPBI showed high abundance (p ˂ 0.05) of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria and a lower abundance of Bacteriodes compared to Control and PC. Besides, the PPBI showed high abundance (p ˂ 0.05) of Clostridiales, Lactobacillales; Bifidobacteriales, Bacillales, and Coriobacteriales in comparison to Control. Specific genera such as Bifibacterium, Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus, Allobaculum, and Blautia were more related to PPBI. Findings reveal wheat-durum pasta as a potential vehicle for delivering paraprobiotics B. animalis.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ingestion of live (9 log CFU mL-1) and ultrasound-inactivated (paraprobiotic, 20 kHz, 40 min) Lacticaseibacillus casei 01 cells for 28 days on healthy parameters (biochemical and cardiovascular) and intestinal microbiota (amplicon sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA) of rats fed a high-fat diet. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were divided into four groups of six animals: CTL (standard diet), HFD (high-fat diet), HFD-LC (high-fat diet and live L. casei), and HFD-ILC (high-fat diet and inactivated L. casei). The administration of live and ultrasound-inactivated L. casei prevented the increase (p < 0.05) in cholesterol levels (total and LDL) and controlled the insulin resistance in rats fed a high-fat diet. Furthermore, it promoted a modulation of the intestinal microbial composition by increasing (p < 0.05) beneficial bacteria (Lachnospiraceae and Ruminoccocaceae) and decreasing (p < 0.05) harmful bacteria (Clostridiaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Helicobacteriacea), attenuating the effects promoted by the HFD ingestion. Only live cells could increase (p < 0.05) the HDL-cholesterol, while only inactivated cells caused attenuation (p < 0.05) of the blood pressure. Results show beneficial effects of live and inactivated L. casei 01 and indicate that ultrasound inactivation produces a paraprobiotic with similar or improved health properties compared to live cells.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to compare the capacity to modulate the intestinal microbiota and the production of metabolites after 14 d administration of a commercial dietary supplement and a manufactured ice cream, both containing the same quantity of inulin and the same viable counts of Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium animalis BB-12, using the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) model. Samples of the colonic contents were evaluated microbiologically by real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) and next-generation sequencing and chemically by the production of SCFA (acetate, propionate and butyrate) and ammonium ions ($\text{NH}_4^ + $). Statistical analyses were carried out for all the variables using the two-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey multiple comparisons test (P < 0·05) for metabolite production, qRT-PCR and the bioinformatics analysis for microbiota diversity. Dietary supplement and ice cream were able to deliver the probiotic L. acidophilus and B. animalis to the simulated colon and modulate the microbiota, increasing beneficial micro-organisms such as Bifidobacterium spp., Bacteroides spp. and Faecalibacterium spp. for dietary supplement administration, and Lactobacillus spp. for ice cream supplementation. However, the ice cream matrix was probably more favourable for the maintenance of the metabolic activity of the probiotics in the SHIME® model, due to the larger amounts of acetate, propionate, butyrate and ammonium ions obtained after 14 d of supplementation. In conclusion, both ways of probiotic supplementation could be efficient, each with its own particularities.

Abstract
In this work, we present a coupled experimental and theoretical first-principles investigation on one of the more promising oxide-diluted magnetic semiconductors, the Sn1-xCoxO2 nanoparticle system, in order to see the effect of cobalt doping on the physical and chemical properties. Our findings suggest that progressive surface enrichment with dopant ions plays an essential role in the monotonous quenching of the surface disorder modes. That weakening is associated with the passivation of the oxygen vacancies as the Co excess at the surface becomes larger. Room-temperature 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy data analysis revealed the occurrence of a distribution of isomer shifts, related to the different non-equivalent surroundings of Sn4+ ions and the coexistence of Sn2+/Sn4+ at the particle surfaces provoked by the inhomogeneous distribution of Co ions, in agreement with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Magnetic measurements revealed a paramagnetic behavior of the Co ions dispersed in the rutile-type matrix with antiferromagnetic correlations, which become stronger as the Co content is increased. Theoretical calculations show that a defect with two Co mediated by a nearby oxygen vacancy is the most likely defect. The predicted effects of this defect complex are in accordance with the experimental results.

Abstract
In this work, the amplicon sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene was employed to investigate the bacterial diversity in ingredients, processing environment, and ripened cheeses collected from three farms producing Serra da Canastra artisanal cheese. The data obtained indicated a remarkable variability in the bacteria consortia of the milk, whey, and environmental samples collected in farms 1, 2, and 3, despite their location in the same city. On the other hand, the starter culture and final product (ripened cheese) presented more constant and similar microbiota no matter the farm. The findings suggest that Streptococcus and Lactococcus have competitive advantages throughout Serra da Canastra cheese-making/ripening, which is crucial for their high relative abundance in the final products. An exploratory assessment based on sequencing data available in the literature showed that the Serra da Canastra cheeses sequences clustered with specific cheese varieties that are also made from raw milk but ripened for very different periods. The findings of this study highlight that despite the variability of milk and whey microbiota among the three farms, the starter culture ("pingo") has strong relevance in shaping the microbiota of the final product.

Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons (AH) are widely distributed in nature, and many of them have been reported as relevant environmental pollutants and valuable carbon sources for different microorganisms. In this work, high-throughput sequencing of a metagenomic fosmid library was carried out to evaluate the functional and taxonomic diversity of genes involved in aromatic compounds degradation in oil-impacted mangrove sediments. In addition, activity-based approach and gas chromatography were used to assess the degradation potential of fosmid clones. Results indicated that AH degradation genes, such as monooxygenases and dioxygenases, were grouped into the following categories: anaerobic degradation of aromatic compounds (20.34%), metabolism of central aromatic intermediates (35.40%) and peripheral pathways for catabolism of aromatic compounds (22.56%). Taxonomic affiliation of genes related to aromatic compounds metabolism revealed the prevalence of the classes Alphaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria. Aromatic hydrocarbons (phenol, naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene and benzopyrene) were used as the only carbon source to screen clones with degradation potential. Of the 2500 clones tested, 48 showed some respiratory activity in at least one of the five carbon sources used. The hydrocarbon degradation ability of the top ten fosmid clones was confirmed by GC-MS. Further, annotation of assembled metagenomic fragments revealed ORFs corresponding to proteins and functional domains directly or indirectly involved in the aromatic compound metabolism, such as catechol 2,3-dioxygenase and ferredoxin oxidoreductase. Finally, these data suggest that the indigenous mangrove sediment microbiota developed essential mechanisms towards ecosystem remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon impact.

Abstract
The Centre for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (CIDACS) was created in 2016 in Salvador, Bahia-Brazil with the objective of integrating data and knowledge aiming to answer scientific questions related to the health of the Brazilian population. This article details our experiences in the establishment and operations of CIDACS, as well as efforts made to obtain high-quality linked data while adhering to security, ethical use and privacy issues. Every effort has been made to conduct operations while implementing appropriate structures, procedures, processes and controls over the original and integrated databases in order to provide adequate datasets to answer relevant research questions. Looking forward, CIDACS is expected to be an important resource for researchers and policymakers interested in enhancing the evidence base pertaining to different aspects of health, in particular when investigating, from a nation-wide perspective, the role of social determinants of health and the effects of social and environmental policies on different health outcomes.

Background
Globally, it has been noted that fishermen have a higher mortality from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and injury from work-related accidents when compared to the general population. A potential increase in unemployment in fishermen in New Bedford could result in a lower income level which relates to an increase in risk behaviors, less health screenings, and negative health behaviors. While there is a lack of health-related data among fishermen across the globe, there is little information regarding the health among fishermen, who are predominantly immigrants, in the US.
Objectives
The objectives include designing a health promotion fair to prepare nursing students with the skills to educate fishermen associated with nutrition, diabetes mellitus, cancer and hypertension as identified by key informants in the community.
Results
Students expressed gains in achieving nursing competencies related to collaboration, communication, and teaching/learning by designing a fair with stations related to the four health topics with posters and activities. Educational materials were available in both Portuguese and English to support this aggregate who expressed learning new knowledge. Networking among local fishing agencies, nursing students and the fishermen supported this project from start to finish.
Conclusions
Despite limited access to this vulnerable group, learning nursing competencies and increased fishermen’s knowledge were realized. Connecting students with vulnerable populations is an effective way to promote learning for both groups.
Key messages
Multiple gains are noted when nursing students are paired with vulnerable community aggregates. Learning to work in the community with local agencies and groups is an effective teaching/learning pedagogy.

Background
As the immigration population continues to grow; little is known about this phenomenon from the immigrants’ perspective. In recent years, nurses have embraced narrative inquiry to better understand the human experience. When relaying their stories, vulnerable groups legitimize their behavior, share their emotional experiences, and amplify their voices that may have otherwise remained silent.
Objective
Eight elderly Portuguese women who immigrated to the United States (US) were interviewed about their experience of immigration by nursing students from Portugal and U.S., as part of a student exchange. The objective of this project was to better understand the impact of immigration through narrative inquiry.
Results
On average, the women lived in the US for approximately fifty years; immigrating in their early twenties. Most women arrived alone or accompanied by spouse and/or children. Their first memories were related to snow, and solitude of being in a new country. The participants attended classes to obtain documents or learn English. All worked in the textile industry; their greatest accomplishment was buying their own house. Challenges faced were related to language and difficult jobs. Overall, they had no regrets except in leaving family members behind. Their message to the students was that love and family are most important in the world. Students were able to realize emigration and immigration from their respective countries.
Conclusions
Rich descriptions provided an in-depth understanding of the details of the women’s experience. Student nurses gained valuable skills and knowledge to understand the impact of immigration among Portuguese women using narrative inquiry.
Key messages
The use of narrative inquiry proved to be a valuable method to interview Portuguese immigrant women. Every immigrant has a unique narrative to share that allowed for nursing student’s appreciation of the experience across generations.

Abstract
Metagenomics is a powerful approach to study microorganisms present in any given environment and their potential to maintain and improve ecosystem health without the need of cultivating these microorganisms in the laboratory. In this study, we combined a cultivation-independent metagenomics approach with functional assays to identify the detoxification potential of microbial genes evaluating their potential to contribute to xenobiotics resistance in oil-impacted mangrove sediments. A metagenomic fosmid library containing 12,960 clones from highly contaminated mangrove sediment was used in this study. For assessment of metal resistance, clones were grown in culture medium with increasing concentrations of mercury. The analyses metagenomic library sequences revealed the presence of genes related to heavy metals and antibiotics resistance in the oil-impacted mangrove microbiome. The taxonomic profiling of these sequences suggests that at the genus level, Geobacter was the most abundant genus in our dataset. A functional screening assessment of the metagenomic library successfully detected 24 potential heavy metal tolerant clones, six of which were capable of growing with increased concentrations of mercury. The genetic characterization of selected clones allowed the detection of genes related to detoxification processes, such as chromate transport protein ChrA, haloacid dehalogenase-like hydrolase, lipopolysaccharide transport system, and 3-oxoacyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] reductase. Clones were capable of growing in medium containing increased concentrations of metals and antibiotics, but none manifested strong mercury removal from culture medium characteristic of mercuric reductase activity. These results suggest that resistance to xenobiotic stress varies greatly and that additional studies to elucidate the potential of metal biotransformation need to be carried out with the goal of improving bioremediation application.

Drylands occupy approximately 41% of the Earth's terrestrial surface. Climate change and land use practices are expected to affect biogeochemical cycling by the soil microbiome in these ecosystems. Understanding how soil microbial community might respond to these drivers is extremely important to mitigate the processes of land degradation and desertification. The Caatinga, an exclusively Brazilian biome composed of an extensive seasonal tropical dry forest, is exposed to variable spatiotemporal rainfall patterns as well as strong human-driven pressures. Herein, an integrated analysis of shotgun metagenomics approach coupled to meteorological data was employed to unravel the impact of seasonality and land use change on soil microbiome from preserved and agriculture-affected experimental fields in Caatinga drylands. Multivariate analysis suggested that microbial communities of preserved soils under seasonal changes were shaped primarily by water deficit, with a strong increase of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria members in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. In contrast, nutrient availability notably played a critical role in driving the microbial community in agriculture-affected soils. The strong enrichment of bacterial genera belonging to the poorly-known phylum Acidobacteria ('Candidatus Solibacter' and 'Candidatus Koribacter') in soils from dry season affected by ferti-irrigation practices presupposes a contrasting copiotrophic lifestyle and ecological role in mitigating the impact of chemical fertilization. Functional analyses identify overrepresented genes related to osmotic stress response (synthesis of osmoprotectant compounds, accumulation of potassium ions) and preferential carbon and nitrogen utilization when comparing the microbiome of preserved soils under seasonal changes, reflecting differences in the genetic potential for nutrient cycling and C acquisition in the environment. However, the prevalence of nitrosative stress and denitrification functions in irrigation/fertilization-affected soils of the dry season clearly suggest that nutrient input and disruption of natural water regime may impact biogeochemical cycles linked to the microbial processes, with potential impacts on the ecosystem functionality. These findings help to better understand how natural seasonality and agricultural management differentially affect soil microbial ecology from dry forests, providing support for the development of more sustainable land management in dryland ecosystems.

Abstract
Despite the wide and growing use of microsurgery, its application in primary burn reconstruction is not very frequent as it faces a number of additional challenges in this setting. A retrospective analysis of the clinical records of all patients submitted to microvascular free tissue transfer for primary burn reconstruction over an 8-year period (from January 2009 to December 2016) was performed. An evaluation of the indications, timing, principles of flap selection, complications and outcomes of free tissue transfer in primary burn reconstruction was made. Fourteen patients required 18 microsurgical flaps for acute soft tissue reconstruction (1.1% of all patients admitted). 64.3% of the patients were male. The mean age was 59.64 years, and mean TBSA was 10.5%. The majority of the injuries were caused by flames (71.4%), followed by electrical contact (21.4%). The primary indication for microsurgical reconstruction was tissue deficit with exposure of tendons, nerves, vessels, bone and/or joints after debridement. The procedure was more often performed in the early period after injury (between the 5th and 22nd day). The most frequently used flaps were the Latissimus dorsi and the anterolateral thigh flap. Major complications included 2 total flap failures (11.1%) and a partial flap failure that required reconstruction with another free flap. Microsurgical free flaps have a valuable role in primary burn reconstruction. Despite the reported higher complication rate in this specific clinical scenario, their use may reduce the total number of surgeries needed to achieve wound closure.

Abstract
Mangroves are coastal ecosystems of transition between terrestrial and marine environments, that have been particularly contaminated in the last decades. Organic compounds are part of these contaminants, which have increased in the environment due to industrial activities and accidental oil spills. These contaminants are toxic to higher organisms, but microorganisms can metabolize most of these compounds and thus offer a tool for bioremediation purposes. The aim of the present study was to characterize the microbial potential and activity for degradation of aromatic compounds in sediment samples from mangroves using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches. Sediment samples were collected for DNA and RNA extraction from each of the mangrove sites: highly oil-impacted (Oil Mgv), anthropogenically impacted (Ant Mgv) and pristine (Prs Mgv) mangrove. Hydrocarbon concentrations in Oil Mgv sediments were higher than those observed in Ant Mgv and Prs Mgv. Genes and transcripts associated with aromatic compound degradation, particularly the meta and ortho-pathways, were more abundant in Oil Mgv and Ant Mgv suggesting that many of the aromatic compounds are being aerobically degraded by the microbiome in these sites. Functions involved in the degradation of aromatic compounds were also found in pristine site, although in lower abundance. Members of the genera Aromatoleum, Desulfococcus, Desulfatibacillum, Desulfitobacterium and Vibrio were actively involved in the detoxification of sediments affected by the oil spill. Results obtained from this study provided strong evidence that microbial degradation of aromatic compounds plays an active role in the biological response to mangrove sediment pollution and subsequent ecosystem recovery.

Abstract
Aging is an important factor contributing decisively to the clinical outcome of burn patients. The aim of this study was to assess the characteristics of patients admitted to a Burn Unit and determine the impact of aging on mortality. A retrospective analysis of patients successively admitted to a major burn centre in Portugal from 1/1/2012 to 31/12/2016 was conducted. They were divided into 2 groups: "elderly" (≥65 years) and "non-elderly" (<65 years). A total of 736 patients were included, 324 of them classified as elderly with a mean age of 78.12±7.14 years. Most of the patients in the elderly group were female (59.6%), in contrast to the non-elderly group (35%; p<0.001). The elderly patients had a higher mean length of hospital stay (20.14±18.46 days; p=0.011). Most of the burns were caused by fire (58.3%) and scalding (36.1%) and mainly after home accidents. Elderly patients showed a higher mean of burn severity index (7.26; p<0.001) and 6.8% needed an amputation. Mortality rate was significantly higher in the elderly group (11.7%; p=0.001). Age (p<0.001; OR=1.169), a higher total burn surface area (p<0.001; OR=1.081), full-thickness burns (p=0.005; OR=11.985) and the need for mechanical ventilation (p<0.001; OR=16.856) were associated with a higher mortality risk and reached statistical significance after multivariate analysis. The functional and vital prognosis of patients admitted to a burn centre is affected by multiple factors. This study showed that age, higher TBSA, full-thickness burns and need for mechanical ventilation seem to increase the risk of mortality.

Abstract
Although electrical burns have a rather low incidence, they are considered one of the most devastating injuries. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse specific aspects of electrical injuries and to delineate a prevention strategy. A retrospective analysis of medical records of all the patients admitted to our Unit with electrical burns over a 10-year period (2006/01/01-2015/12/31) was undertaken. Demographic data, mechanism of injury and electric current voltage, total burn surface area (TBSA), location and depth of burns, acute complications, surgical interventions and length of hospital stay (LOS) were analysed. Out of 1695 burn patients admitted to our Unit, 99 subjects (5.84%) suffered electrical burns. 97% of these patients were male. The mean age was 38.3±13.7years and mean TBSA was 11.9%±13.2%. The mechanism of injury was occupational in 75 cases. Injuries were classified as low-voltage burns (24.2%), highvoltage burns (30.3%) and flash burns (45.5%). TBSA (p=0.014), mean LOS (p=0.002) and serum creatinine kinase levels (p<0.001) were significantly higher in patients with high-voltage injury in comparison to low-voltage injury, as well as the incidence of escharotomy/ fasciotomy (p=0.049) and flap surgeries (p=0.004). Although there was a higher incidence of amputations in this group (16.7% vs. 12.5%), the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.487). The high prevalence of electrical burns in males and workers emphasizes the need to review occupational safety regulations. Educational efforts regarding potential hazards of electricity and reinforcing compliance with safety measures are essential to avoid these injuri.

Abstract
Contamination of the environment by heavy metals has been increasing in recent years due to industrial activities. Thus research involving microorganisms capable of surviving in multi-contaminated environments is extremely important. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the removal of mercury alone and in the presence of cadmium, nickel and lead by four mercury-resistant microorganisms; estimate the removal of Cd, Ni and Pb; understand the mechanisms involved (reduction, siderophores, biofilms, biosorption and bioaccumulation) in the metal resistance of the isolate Pseudomonas sp. B50D; and determine the capacity of Pseudomonas sp. B50D in removing Hg, Cd, Ni and Pb from an industrial effluent. It was shown that the four isolates evaluated were capable of removing from 62% to 95% of mercury from a culture medium with no addition of other metals. The isolate Pseudomonas sp. B50D showed the best performance in the removal of mercury when evaluated concomitantly with other metals. This isolate was capable of removing 75% of Hg in the presence of Cd and 91% in the presence of Ni and Pb. With respect to the other metals it removed 60%, 15% and 85% of Cd, Ni and Pb, respectively. In tests with effluent, the isolate Pseudomonas sp. B50D removed 85% of Hg but did not remove the other metals. This isolate presented reduction, biosorption, biofilm production and siderophore production as its metal resistance mechanisms. Pseudomonas sp. B50D was thus a candidate with potential for application in the bioremediation of effluents with complex metal contaminations.

Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons (AH), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are compounds largely found in nature. Aromatic‐ring‐hydroxylating dioxygenases (ARHD) are proteins involved in AH degradation pathways. We used ARHD functional genes from an oil‐impacted mangrove area and compared their diversity with other sites around the world to understand the ARHD biogeographic distribution patterns. For this, a comprehensive database was established with 166 operational protein families (OPFs) from 1,758 gene sequences obtained from 15 different sites worldwide, of which twelve are already published studies and three are unpublished. Based on a deduced ARHD peptide sequences consensus phylogeny, we examined trends and divergences in the sequence phylogenetic clustering from the different sites. The taxonomic affiliation of the OPF revealed that Pseudomonas, Streptomyces, Variovorax, Bordetella and Rhodococcus were the five most abundant genera, considering all sites. The functional diversity analysis showed the enzymatic prevalence of benzene 1,2‐dioxygenase, 3‐phenylpropionate dioxygenase and naphthalene 1,2‐dioxygenase, in addition to 10.98% of undefined category ARHDs. The ARHD gene correlation analysis among different sites was essentially important to gain insights on spatial distribution patterns, genetic congruence and ecological coherence of the bacterial groups found. This work revealed the genetic potential from the mangrove sediment for AH biodegradation and a considerable evolutionary proximity among the dioxygenase OPFs found in Antarctica and South America sites, in addition to high level of endemism in each continental region.

Abstract
The litterfall is the major organic material deposited in soil of Brazilian Caatinga biome, thus providing the ideal conditions for plant biomass-degrading microorganisms to thrive. Herein, the phylogenetic composition and lignocellulose-degrading capacity have been explored for the first time from a fosmid library dataset of Caatinga soil by sequence-based screening. A complex bacterial community dominated by Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria was unraveled. SEED subsystems-based annotations revealed a broad range of genes assigned to carbohydrate and aromatic compounds metabolism, indicating microbial ability to utilize plant-derived material. CAZy-based annotation identified 7275 genes encoding 37 glycoside hydrolases (GHs) families related to hydrolysis of cellulose, hemicellulose, oligosaccharides and other lignin-modifying enzymes. Taxonomic affiliation of genes showed high genetic potential of the phylum Acidobacteria for hemicellulose degradation, whereas Actinobacteria members appear to play an important role in celullose hydrolysis. Additionally, comparative analyses revealed greater GHs profile similarity among soils as compared to the digestive tract of animals capable of digesting plant biomass, particularly in the hemicellulases content. Combined results suggest a complex synergistic interaction of community members required for biomass degradation into fermentable sugars. This large repertoire of lignocellulolytic enzymes opens perspectives for mining potential candidates of biochemical catalysts for biofuels production from renewable resources and other environmental applications.

Abstract
Mangroves are complex and dynamic ecosystems highly dependent on diverse microbial activities. In the last decades, these ecosystems have been exposed to and affected by diverse human activities, such as waste disposal and accidental oil spills. Complex microbial communities inhabiting the soil and sediment of mangroves comprise microorganisms that have developed mechanisms to adapt to organic and inorganic contaminants. The resistance of these microbes to contaminants is an attractive property and also the reason why soil and sediment living microorganisms and their enzymes have been considered promising for environmental detoxification. The aim of the present study was to identify active microbial genes in heavy metals, i.e., Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Hg, and antibiotic resistomes of polluted and pristine mangrove sediments through the comparative analysis of metatranscriptome data. The concentration of the heavy metals Zn, Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd, and Hg and abundance of genes and transcripts involved in resistance to toxic compounds (the cobalt-zinc-cadmium resistance protein complex; the cobalt-zinc-cadmium resistance protein CzcA and the cation efflux system protein CusA) have been closely associated with sites impacted with petroleum, sludge and other urban waste. The taxonomic profiling of metatranscriptome sequences suggests that members of Gammaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria classes contribute to the detoxification of the polluted soil. Desulfobacterium autotrophicum was the most abundant microorganism in the oil-impacted site and displayed specific functions related to heavy metal resistance, potentially playing a key role in the successful persistence of the microbial community of this site.

Abstract
Environmental contamination of mercury (Hg) has caused public health concerns with focuses on the neurotoxic substance methylmercury, due to its bioaccumulation and biomagnification in food chains. The goals of the present study were to examine: (i) the transformation of methylmercury, thimerosal, phenylmercuric acetate and mercuric chloride by cultures of Pseudomonas putida V1, (ii) the presence of the genes merA and merB in P. putida V1, and (iii) the degradation pathways of methylmercury by P. putida V1. Strain V1 cultures readily degraded methylmercury, thimerosal, phenylmercury acetate, and reduced mercuric chloride into gaseous Hg(0). However, the Hg transformation in LB broth by P. putida V1 was influenced by the type of Hg compounds. The merA gene was detected in P. putida V1, on the other hand, the merB gene was not detected. The sequencing of this gene, showed high similarity (100%) to the mercuric reductase gene of other Pseudomonas spp. Furthermore, tests using radioactive (14)C-methylmercury indicated an uncommon release of (14)CO2 concomitant with the production of Hg(0). The results of the present work suggest that P. putida V1 has the potential to remove methylmercury from contaminated sites. More studies are warranted to determine the mechanism of removal of methylmercury by P. putida V1.

Abstract
In recent decades, the concentration of trace elements has increased in soil and water, mainly by industrialization and urbanization. Recovery of contaminated areas is generally complex. In that respect, microorganisms can be of vital importance by making significant contributions towards the establishment of plants and the stabilization of impacted areas. Among the available strategies for environmental recovery, bioremediation and phytoremediation outstand. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are considered the most important type of mycorrhizae for phytoremediation. AMF have broad occurrence in contaminated soils, and evidences suggest they improve plant tolerance to excess of certain trace elements. In this review, the use of AMF in phytoremediation and mechanisms involved in their trace element tolerance are discussed. Additionally, we present some techniques used to study the retention of trace elements by AMF, as well as a summary of studies showing major benefits of AMF for phytoremediation.

Abstract
Objetivou-se avaliar o impacto da inclusão de caroço de algodão e glicerina bruta em suplementos múltiplos para bovinos em terminação na época das águas, sobre o desempenho produtivo e econômico da suplementação e aumento no peso de abate. Foram utilizados 40 bovinos, Nelore, machos, não castrados, distribuídos aleatoriamente em 4 grupos que receberam oferta média de 0,75 % do peso corporal em suplemento, pela formulação padrão (SP), inclusão de 15 % de glicerina bruta (GLIC), inclusão de 25 % de caroço de algodão (CA) ou inclusão de 15 % de glicerina bruta e 25 % de caroço de algodão (CAGLIC). Não houve influencia (p>0,05) sobre desempenho, peso de carcaça quente ou rendimento de carcaça. O incremento no peso de abate, mostrou-se favorável economicamente, independente da formulação utilizada, embora a maior rentabilidade tenha sido alcançada pelo fornecimento do suplemento CAGLIC dado ao menor custo do suplemento e manutenção do desempenho. A renda pode variar de acordo com os preços dos ingredientes padrões, devendo estes fatores ser considerados para a elaboração de suplementos múltiplos para bovinos em engorda a pasto no período das águas.

Abstract
We describe the first case, to our knowledge, of disseminated Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin infection in a child with Bare Lymphocyte Syndrome type II after undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The patient presented 30 days post HSCT with fever and lymphadenitis. Lymph node, blood, and gastric aspirates were positive for M. bovis. The patient received a prolonged treatment course with a combination of isoniazid, levofloxacin, and ethambutol. Her course was further complicated by granulomatous lymphadenitis and otitis media associated with M. bovis that developed during immune suppression taper and immune reconstitution. Ultimately, the patient recovered fully, in association with restoration of immune function, and has completed 12 months of therapy.
