Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of perioperative nurses in Sweden (ie, operating theater nurses) associated with caring for a donor patient during organ procurement procedures. We sought to determine the nurses' main concerns and how they dealt with them. Using constructivist grounded theory methodology, our participant sample included 10 nurses, one of whom self-identified as male. The average age of the participants was 51.8 years (range = 38 to 63 years). After interviewing the participants and coding their responses, we developed the core category of optimum organ procurement. The generated grounded theory comprises four main categories: brace oneself, facilitate, procurement, and completion. Commitment is the force that binds the perioperative nurse to a course of action. This theory may help guide a team-based approach to prepare nurses to care for donor patients with dignity and respect during procurement procedures.

Abstract
Many older gay men experience diminished psychological well-being (PWB) due to unique circumstances including discrimination, living with HIV, and aging through the HIV/AIDS crisis. However, there remains ambiguity as to how older gay men define and understand PWB. Our team interviewed and analyzed the accounts of 26 older (50+) self-identifying English-speaking men living in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. We drew on tenets of constructivist grounded theory and intersectionality to account for unique contextual considerations and power relations. Semi-structured Zoom interviews were conducted from August-October 2022. Interview transcripts were compared to generate high-order conceptual findings underpinned by processes understood as central to PWB. Three PWB temporal processes highlighted interlocking social and contextual circumstances intersecting with power and maturation: (1) being emotionally balanced, (2) living gratitude (3) and fully embracing self-acceptance. Being emotionally balanced supported the affective and sustainable state of contentment, living gratitude drew from the wisdom of accrued experiences to cultivate a positive affective state inclusive to recognising social location privileges, whilst fully embracing self-acceptance redressed the harms of anti-gay discourses that men endured throughout their lives. The knowledge is relevant to service and resource development to deliver tailored PWB supports to older gay men.

Abstract
Previous studies show that Black women in the United States experience disproportionately poorer health outcomes compared to women of other racial/ethnic groups. Recently the focus is on improving the health of Black women in the United States. However, there is little empirical evidence on what Black women need to improve their health to be well. The goal of this constructivist grounded theory was to increase the understanding of wellness among middle-class Black women (N = 30) in a large Midwestern city in the United States through an intersectional lens. The findings show that the connection and balance between mind, body, and spirit was the core experience of wellness among middle-class Black women. Mind, body, and spirit was described in three ways-(a) mentally managing, (b) physically caring for my body, and (c) connecting spiritually-with the women also noting the barriers and facilitators they endured to be well. Each of these categories highlight the tension middle-class Black women experience with trying to be well. Implications for future practice and research with middle-class Black women are discussed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the self and identity perspectives among Chinese adolescents with severe mental illness (SMI), with a focus on their illness experience and subjective meaning of a formal diagnosis. Thirty-one Chinese adolescents were interviewed and the interview data were analysed strictly according to principles suggested by the constructivist grounded theory approach. Five theoretical codes emerged in this study, including changes of personal values and beliefs, accumulated persistent developmental challenges and personal stresses, ineffective coping strategies and development, symptoms and development of mental illness, and changed perceptions and understandings of self. A proposed model of "The dynamic interactions of Chinese adolescents' identity and mental illness", was constructed and visualized. The results revealed that adolescents' identity formation is a fluctuating and non-linear process, but tends to be predominantly negative. The negative self, as informed by long-term ineffective coping with accumulated persistent developmental challenges and stressful events, develops towards a more serious status of negative identity and contributes to relapse symptoms, although this impact occurs variably with perceived personal characteristics. Besides, some participants who had achieved a state of "Buddha-like numbness" made a conscious decision to live a seemingly normal life while coexisting with their illness. The study also highlighted the positive aspects of identity formation that can arise from the experience of illness, including an enhanced sense of realism and increased empathy. Our findings will imply much the need for person-centred treatment plan and services that take into account of individual situations.

Abstract
National estimates indicate that intimate partner violence (IPV) impacts people of all social demographics. Although IPV is a pervasive issue, LGBTQ+ individuals and heterosexual men note stark disparities in responses from victim advocates compared to heterosexual women. To highlight the influence of agency training on advocates' perceptions of IPV and diverse survivor populations, interviews were conducted with victim advocates and constructivist grounded theory methods were employed. Analyses show that advocates undergo a three-phase process of learning about IPV when starting at their agencies. Advocate's narratives highlight limitations in training and the importance of workplace experiences in growing understanding of IPV.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Major depressive disorder is the most prevalent of all mental illnesses. 10%-20% of patients with depression and 1% of the population overall have treatment-resistant depression (TRD). DBS is an emerging investigational treatment for TRD with documented clinical efficacy and safety. The framework of the recovery model includes both clinical and personal recovery. Personal recovery is a self-process in which hope, empowerment and optimism are embraced to overcome the impact of mental illness on one's sense of self. Although clinical and functional outcomes of DBS for TRD have been well documented in the previous studies, personal recovery as an outcome has been explored only in a handful of studies. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This is the first qualitative study exploring personal recovery from DBS treatment specific to the target of subcallosal cingulate cortex in patients with TRD. Since the existing literature on personal recovery in DBS studies is limited, the contribution of this paper is crucial to this field. For individuals who responded to deep brain stimulation clinically, neither participants nor family believed it cured their depression, but rather there was a significant decrease in the severity of symptoms of depression. A holistic-oriented framework (that includes personal recovery) is significant for those individuals with TRD undergoing DBS. Personal and clinical recovery are two different constructs, and individuals may experience one or the other or both. The experience of participants who responded to deep brain stimulation recognized that the recovery from depression is a process of reconstructing self. This process involved a period of adjustment that evoked a deeper self-awareness, re-engagement with daily living and newfound gratitude in living. Individuals transitioned from an emotionally driven life to one where future goals were considered. Supportive relationships were instrumental in this process. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: A deep brain stimulation intervention for treatment-resistant depression offered individuals an opportunity for personal recovery where a reconstruction of self occurred. Personal recovery can be considered as an outcome in conjunction with clinical and functional outcomes in future DBS trials for TRD. The relevance of personal recovery in the prevention of relapses needs further investigation. To advocate for care and services that facilitate the process of recovery from depression, it is important to understand the personal dimensions and experience of recovery that may influence the process. To develop recovery-oriented interventions to help patients and families in recovery post-deep brain stimulation, further understanding of support and negotiating relationships during this life-altering experience is needed. ABSTRACT: Introduction Multiple trials of antidepressant treatments in patients with depression pose a major challenge to the mental health system. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an emerging and promising investigational treatment to reduce depressive symptoms in individuals with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). The clinical and functional outcomes of DBS for TRD have been well documented in previous studies; however, studies of personal recovery as an outcome of DBS specific to the target of subcallosal cingulate cortex in patients with TRD are limited. Aim To explore the processes of personal recovery in patients with treatment-resistant depression following subcallosal cingulate-deep brain stimulation. Method Participants were 18 patients with TRD who participated in the subcallosal cingulate (SCC)-DBS trial and 11 family members. They also participated in add-on individual cognitive behavioural therapy during the trial. A qualitative constructivist grounded theory approach was used to conceptualize the personal recovery process of patients and families. Results While every participant and their families' journey were unique following the deep brain stimulation intervention, a theoretical model of Balancing to Establish a Reconstructed Self emerged from the data. The themes underlying the model were (1) Balancing to Establish a Reconstructed Self: A Whole-Body Experience, (2) The Liminal Space in-between: Balancing with Cautious Optimism, (3) Hope: Transitioning from Emotion-Focussed Living to Goal-Oriented Planning and (4) Support: Negotiating Relationships. Discussion This is the first study examining recovery from patients' perspectives as an outcome of SCC-DBS intervention for TRD. The study shows that personal recovery is a gradual and continual process of reconstruction of the self, developing through supportive relationships. Clinical and personal recovery are two distinct constructs, and individuals may experience one or the other or both. Most patients who do respond clinically experience improvement in terms of having optimism and hope. Some patients, however, respond with significant symptom reduction but are not able to achieve personal recovery to experience joy or hope for improved quality of living. Implications for Practice Strategies for personal recovery for both patients and family need to be considered during and post deep brain stimulation intervention. Nurses working with these patients and families may benefit from education, training and support to assess and engage in conversations about their recovery process.

Abstract
Introduction Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV) is an established treatment for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), but it is often improperly used or rejected. The patterns of acceptance and adherence to NPPV, conceiving constraints, and strengths related to its adaptation have not been explored from a qualitative perspective yet. Objectives This study aims to qualitatively explore patterns of adaptation to NPPV in people affected by COPD and to identify the core characteristics and the specific adaptive challenges during the adaptation process. Methods Forty-two people with moderate or severe COPD were recruited and 336 unstructured interviews were conducted. A Constructivist Grounded Theory was used to gather and analyze data: the transcriptions were mutually gathered in open, selective, and theoretical phases, with open, selective, and theoretical coding, respectively. Results The analysis resulted in a non-linear and dynamic process, characterized by three phases: deciding, trying NPPV, and using NPPV. The patterns revealed that positive and negative NPPV experiences, together with beliefs, emotions, stressful mental states, and behaviors result in different acceptance and adherence rates. Discussions These findings may be helpful to implement new care strategies to promote acceptance and adherence to NPPV.

Abstract
Therapists report significant countertransference reactions when treating clients with eating disorders (EDs). Countertransference may be pronounced among therapists with eating disorder lived experience (EDLE). Minimal research examines how therapists with EDLE negotiate their experiences while treating ED clients. Informed by the person-of-the-therapist philosophy, this study sought to understand how therapists use and manage their EDLE when working with ED clients. Using constructivist grounded theory methodology, semistructured interviews (Mtime = 89 min) were conducted with 22 therapists with EDLE. Results revealed that therapists engaged in two interconnected systems. The Central System helps therapists transform their lived experiences into clinical guidance. The Checks and Balances System allows therapists to find a balance between connecting with the client and allowing for differences in experiences to emerge. Lastly, three personal processes existing outside of these systems were found to impact therapists' use of self. Findings provide novel ways that therapists can use their EDLE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research shows that nursing home residents' basic care needs are often neglected, potentially resulting in incidents that threaten patients' safety and quality of care. Nursing staff are at the frontline for identifying such care practices but may also be at the root of the problem. The aim of this study was to generate new knowledge on reporting instances of neglect in nursing homes based on the research question "How is neglect reported and communicated by nursing home staff?" METHODS A qualitative design guided by the principles of constructivist grounded theory was used. The study was based on five focus-group discussions (20 participants) and 10 individual interviews with nursing staff from 17 nursing homes in Norway. RESULTS Neglect in nursing homes is sometimes invisible due to a combination of personal and organizational factors. Staff may minimize "missed care" and not consider it neglect, so it is not reported. In addition, they may be reluctant to acknowledge or reveal their own or colleagues' neglectful practices. CONCLUSION Neglect of residents in nursing homes may continue to occur if nursing staff's reporting practices are making neglect invisible, thus proceeding to compromise a resident's safety and quality of care for the foreseeable future.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study explored how Registered Nurses (RNs) in rural practice deal with psychologically traumatic events when living and working in the same rural community over time. BACKGROUND Rural RNs who are exposed to trauma may be at high risk for psychological distress (e.g. secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder), in the context of isolated practice and slower emergency response times. DESIGN AND METHODS Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory methodology was chosen for this qualitative study. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 19 RNs from six rural acute care hospitals. A total of 33 interviews were conducted with 19 face-to-face initial interviews, 14 follow-up telephone interviews and 14 reflective journals. Adherence to the COREQ EQUATOR guidelines was maintained. RESULTS Participants were exposed to a multitude of trauma-related events, with their main concern of being intertwined with events for life. They dealt with this by staying strong, which included relying upon others, seeking inner strength, attempting to leave the past behind and experiencing transformational change over time. Being embedded in the community left them linked with these trauma-related events for life. Staying strong was a crucial element to their ability to cope and to face future events. CONCLUSIONS The psychological implications of trauma-related events when working and living in rural acute care practice settings are significant and complex. Findings highlight the need for organizational support and processes and may contribute to improved psychological services and management practices. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Key learnings were that rural nurses, who live and work in the same community, experience psychological changes over time from traumatic events that stay with them for life; employers fail to recognise the seriousness of this issue and trauma-informed policies with associated resources are lacking.

Abstract
Spoken language interpreters play a critical role in bridging the linguistic and cultural gap between refugee newcomers and service providers in resettlement countries. Little is known about the positions interpreters assume in their work with refugee newcomers and the meaning-making processes attached. Our study used constructivist grounded theory techniques and Situational Analysis to analyse interview transcripts and identify positions taken. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 12 professional interpreters working in the southeastern United States. Findings suggest interpreters break the mould of the dominant training paradigm-the black box interpretation model-to support the realities of their clients' needs. We conceptualised five prominent positions interpreters take-the conduit, the clarifier, the co-clinician, the comforter, and the volunteer. Practice recommendations include incorporating identified positions into professional interpreter training and supervision agendas.

Abstract
School-based policing has become common practice, but there is limited qualitative research examining what meanings students make of police presence in their schools. This study sought to understand how students construct narratives of police presence in their schools based on their experiences with school resource officers (SROs). Drawing on constructivist grounded theory methodology with a sample of 17 students, this study found that students are continuously integrating multiple conflicting narratives about SROs: students experience SROs as an established yet ambiguous presence, which produces mixed feelings of reassurance, wariness, and intimidation. Students manage the conflicts between these narratives by positioning school-based police as a fixed structure with pitfalls and positives but no alternatives. Additionally, students experience SROs as being available to them in relational capacities. The primary recommendations from this study are for schools and communities to (1) reconsider the appropriateness of SRO programs with student perspectives at the center of dialogue, and (2) invest in non-law enforcement school-based professionals who students experience as available and relational.

Abstract
In experimental cognitive psychology, objects of inquiry are typically operationalized with psychological tasks. When interpreting results from such tasks, we focus primarily on behavioral measures such as reaction times and accuracy rather than experiences - i.e., phenomenology - associated with the task, and posit that the tasks elicit the desired cognitive phenomenon. Evaluating whether the tasks indeed elicit the desired phenomenon can be facilitated by understanding the experience during task performance. In this paper we explore the breadth of experiences that are elicited by and accompany task performance using in-depth phenomenological and qualitative methodology to gather subjective reports during the performance of a visuo-spatial change detection task. Thirty-one participants (18 females) were asked to remember either colors, orientations or positions of the presented stimuli and recall them after a short delay. Qualitative reports revealed rich experiential landscapes associated with the task-performance, suggesting a distinction between two broad classes of experience: phenomena at the front of consciousness and background feelings. The former includes cognitive strategies and aspects of metacognition, whereas the latter include more difficult-to-detect aspects of experience that comprise the overall sense of experience (e.g., bodily feelings, emotional atmosphere, mood). We focus primarily on the background feelings, since strategies of task-performance to a large extent map onto previously identified cognitive processes and discuss the methodological implications of our findings.

Abstract
Despite the increasing integration of arts-based methods within qualitative research, few expressive arts methods have been studied to understand their process, rationale and impact on the inquiry process. We conducted a grounded theory study on family experiences of paediatric HSCT where we simultaneously adapted and studied a 'dialoguing with images' (DI) expressive arts process as method. Fifteen family members participated in two interviews, drew an image and were guided through the DI method. We articulate the social process shared by researchers, participants and the images as they co-constructed knowledge through the DI method. The four distinct phases of the method include: 1) containing the imaginative space within an outer and inner frame, 2) creating an embodied image: image work is an expressive, generative process, 3) a shared, participatory aesthetic interpretation and 4) crystallizing stories of illness. The findings are grounded in expressive arts theory and philosophy, hermeneutics and analytical art psychotherapy theory.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally homeless mentally ill (HMI) individuals are considered one of the most vulnerable populations. An individual-centric, psychopathology-oriented focus of the existing mental health-care system limits the understanding of the HMI individuals through the disability lens overlooking their strengths and resilience that enable them to survive extremely hostile environments. Contemporary mental health research has embraced a paradigm shift that allows researchers to look beyond the predominant medical model to give precedence to a socio-culturally contexted and experientially firm understanding of human behaviour. AIM Through the theoretical lens of social suffering, this article attempts to understand the lived experiences of the HMI women, the perspective of their caregivers and the standpoint of service providers in the context of homelessness and mental illness. METHODOLOGY A documentary analysis as a qualitative research methodology has been used to reflect upon the concerns mentioned above. Following Figueroa's approach to the analysis of audio-visual texts, the documentary Lapata Zindagi, directed by Radhika Lata Murthy, has woven the stories of four HMI women and their caregivers have been analysed. The two-phased analysis involved constructivist grounded theory procedures. RESULTS The methodological steps, rigour and the resulting categories (experience of social suffering associated with homelessness among HMI women, denial of care and rights within patriarchy, helplessness associated with the burden of caregiving and roles of NGO and community in building hope and empowerment) have been discussed through the lens of social suffering and how stakeholders might facilitate hope and empowerment amidst it. CONCLUSION The article highlights the dire and urgent need to integrate mental health into primary health care and community-based intervention and move beyond clinical recovery to nurture 'hope' to enable recovery and empowerment for such marginalised populations.

Abstract
AIM To explore nurses' and midwives' experiences, views, perceptions and impact on their responses to out of work emergencies where first aid may be required. DESIGN A constructivist grounded theory study was conducted between 2012 and 2019. METHODOLOGY In-depth, semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 16 nurses and midwives. Participants were recruited via a participant referral process with registered nurses and midwives being accessed from three NHS organizations. Data were analysed and coded using constant comparative analysis with the support of Nvivo 10 software leading to the construction of a substantive grounded theory. RESULTS A core enduring in vivo theme, 'The Right Thing to Do', emerged as a central conceptual reality constructed via three key in vivo themes; 'Something I've Heard', 'Am I Covered?' and 'Just Who I Am', each with several sub-themes. A pervading anxiety about responding at off-duty situations requiring first aid was persistently evident across these themes. CONCLUSION The study showed a strong sense of moral agency among nurses and midwives, despite a powerful underlying feeling of anxiety surrounding broader issues of urban myth, protection and personal and professional identity. The substantive theory emerged as 'doing "The Right Thing" in a climate of anxiety'. IMPACT The study illuminates an area that has previously been the subject of anecdotal debate. The substantive theory, 'doing "The Right Thing" in a climate of anxiety' illustrates the issues and tensions that exist surrounding the off-duty response. Implications and recommendations for practice and education focus on the fostering of knowledge and understanding of professional identity, position in law and scope of practice, together with potential future research directions. This work provides the first in-depth qualitative study contributing a significant new perspective both nationally and globally.

Abstract
Background Cameroon became a republic in 1960 but tensions have continued over the last half century; such tensions, and some of the opportunities afforded, have shaped policy decisions around issues including nursing education. Aims The aim of this paper is to present a constructivist grounded theory of the evolution of nurse education in Cameroon based on interviews and available historical records. Methods Two data sources were used to develop the theory. Semi-structured interviews were carried out by the researcher with a purposive sample of 10 informants. Informants involved in the historical and current development of nurse education policy and practice were interviewed. Historical records were also located and examined, to understand the differing philosophical and pragmatic basis for decision-making in relation to nurse education in Cameroon. Results The emergent grounded theory is entitled 'Seizing the opportunity of the moment'. This theory outlines the evolution of nurse education in Cameroon since the country gained independence. It explores the centrality of timeliness and context on the evolution of nurse education policy. Conclusions Conclusions are drawn that identify the current context in Cameroon as a critical moment for harmonisation of policy and practice for nurse education.

Abstract
Early mobilisation of mechanically ventilated patients has been suggested to be effective in mitigating muscle weakness, yet it is not a common practice. Understanding staff experiences is crucial to gain insights into what might facilitate or hinder its implementation. In this constructivist grounded theory study, data from two Scottish intensive care units were collected to understand healthcare staff experiences relating to early mobilisation in mechanical ventilation. Data included observations of mobilisation activities, individual staff interviews and two focus groups with multidisciplinary staff. Managing Risks emerged as the core category and was theorised using the concept of risk. The middle-range theory developed in this study suggests that the process of early mobilisation starts by staff defining patient status and includes a process of negotiating patient safety, which in turn enables performing accountable mobilisation within the dynamic context of an intensive care unit setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Newly Graduated Nurses in different socio-cultural contexts confront dissimilar situations and influences on role transfer. It is important to understand how newly graduated nurses reconstruct their own professional concept of clinical nurses. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore how Taiwanese newly graduated nurses perceived their new role and the process through which they transition into the professional role. METHODS Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory guided the study's design and implementation. Purposive and theoretical sampling and the snowball technique were used to recruit 30 participants from 3 tertiary and 2 community hospitals in Taiwan. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim into a readable format. Initial, focused and theoretical coding was utilized for data analysis. The criteria of credibility, originality, resonance and usefulness guided assessment of the study's quality and ensured the trustworthiness of the study process. RESULTS The process of role transition to become a nurse comprised four stages: hesitation, psychological preparation, development and appreciation. The hesitation stage was interpreted as a phase of passive learning. In the psychological preparation, newly graduate nurses began to take full work responsibility. The development stage saw them gain work confidence and, in the appreciation stage, they acquired a full picture of their roles. CONCLUSION To bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practice and reduce the time new graduate nurses need for role adjustment contributes to an early stage of Hesitation rather than the Appreciation stage of role transition. The findings suggest the need for further research to explore newly graduated nurses' needs during the process of role transition.

Abstract
Non-profit organizations that address gender-based violence must create diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplaces for advocates so that they can adequately serve diverse survivors. Despite recent efforts, differential treatment and high turnover among minority advocates continue. Further strategies to eliminate discriminative organizational practices are needed. We interviewed 25 advocates employed by non-profit organizations in a Southeastern state to examine how race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality shape their work experiences. Guided by constructivist grounded theory and intersectionality, data analysis yielded four major themes that covered white dominance in advocacy, essentialized womanhood and heteronormativity, serving communities of color, working in the Deep South. Patriarchal values, religious norms, and gender roles influenced how advocates' work was received by the communities. Racial/ethnic minority, and sexual and/or gender minority advocates faced discrimination, tokenism, and negative stereotypes. Transforming organizational climate and policies is necessary to support minority advocates' work engagement and ability to serve marginalized communities.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe essential aspects of care continuity from the perspectives of persons with complex care needs and their family carers. BACKGROUND Continuity of care is an important aspect of quality, safety and efficiency. For people with multiple chronic diseases and complex care needs, care must be experienced as connected and coherent, and consistent with medical and individual needs. The more complex the need for care, the greater the need for continuity across different competencies, services and roles. DESIGN A constructivist grounded theory approach was applied. METHODS Sixteen patients with one or more chronic diseases needing both health care and social care, living in their private homes, and twelve family carers, were recruited. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed with constructivist grounded theory. The COREQ checklist was followed. RESULTS A conceptual model of care continuity was constructed, consisting of five categories that were interconnected through the core category: time and space. Patients' and family carers' experiences of care continuity were closely related to timely personalised care delivery, where access to tailored information, regardless of who was performing a care task, was essential for mutual understanding. This required clarity in responsibilities and roles, interprofessional collaboration and achieving a trusting relationship between each link in the chain of care, over time and space. To achieve care continuity, all the identified categories were important, as they worked in synergy, not in isolation. CONCLUSION Care continuity for people with complex care needs and family carers is experienced as multidimensional, with several essential aspects that work in synergy, but varies over time and depends on each person's own resources and situational and contextual circumstances. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The findings promote understanding of patients' and family carers' experiences of care continuity and may guide the delivery of care to people with complex care needs.

Abstract
Early childhood home visiting to improve health and development is commonly delivered by child health care (CHC) whereas home visitors from the social services are rare. We applied a constructivist grounded theory approach to explore the practice and contributions of parental advisors from the preventive social services in a home visiting collaboration with CHC in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area of Sweden. The analysis rendered a conceptual model of a situation-based practice, built on interactive encounters between parents and professionals. It includes strengthening of positive parenting, connecting parents to additional services, early detection of needs and provision of psychosocial support in accordance with each family's specific situation. Rooted in the training and experience in social work, the practice can be seen as contributory to the delivery of complex support to families through home visiting and could provide input to efforts of improving training of home visitors in different contexts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To explore and understand the relationship between sexting behavior and adolescent mental health and well-being. METHOD A constructivist grounded theory study was conducted. Seventeen 18-22-year-old participants provided recollective and reflective accounts of sexting experiences throughout their adolescence. RESULTS Engaging in the Culture of Teen Sexting materialized as the central process and title for the grounded theory that emerged. Six primary processes included Engaging in the Culture of Teen Sexting, Identifying Motivating Factors, Forming Perceptions and Feelings, Acknowledging and Managing Risks, Connecting Mental Health and Sexting, and Finding a Sexual Self. DISCUSSION The findings suggested sexting is part of teen culture and normal adolescent sexual growth and development. Acknowledging sexting as a culture and normal part of sexual growth and development will assist pediatric nurse practitioners in engaging teens in conversations about sexting, helping them to navigate the risks of sexting and find healthy ways to manage sexting behavior.

Abstract
AIMS This study aims to report on the everyday concern of the 'potential for misinterpretation', which was the basic social problem revealed in a grounded theory study exploring male nurse practice in inpatient rehabilitation in Australia. BACKGROUND Male nurses account for approximately 10% of nursing workforce across western countries and they practice in a range of clinical areas; however, how they practice in inpatient rehabilitation remains unexplored. METHODS Constructivist grounded theory was used in this study and was conducted in two phases: (i) involved semi-structured interviews with 11 male nurses from October 2013 to June 2014 and (ii) observation of practice of 12 male nurses and semi-structured interviews with male nurses and 15 patients from February to April 2015. RESULTS Nurse participants encountered the intersection of two pervasive patient ideologies about male nurses. Patients perceived nursing to be women's work and that male nurses are sexual threats. These two intersecting ideologies created a concern for male nurses working in inpatient rehabilitation and that concern was labelled 'potential for misinterpretation'. CONCLUSION Gender stereotypes impacted on the ability of male nurses to practise nursing in inpatient rehabilitation. Male nurses were mindful on a daily basis that misinterpretation could, and did, happen in inpatient rehabilitation.

Abstract
Congenital facial palsy is a rare medical condition that causes paralysis of the facial muscles, lack of facial expression, and an unusual appearance. Findings from developmental psychology suggest that the face plays a central role in the construction of self. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 adults born with congenital facial palsy. Participant's constructions of self across the life span were explored and a grounded theory of this process was constructed. Theoretical sampling was conducted with two parents of children born with the condition. All participants reported "struggling to make connections," "experiencing invalidation," and "struggling to regulate affect," which lead to "constructing a defective sense of self." Alternatively, "making validating connections" facilitated the process of "constructing a validated sense of self." This study provides insight into the unique social and emotional challenges often experienced by those born with congenital facial palsy and highlights the need for early psychosocial intervention.

Abstract
Care for sick parents and their dependent children (<18 years) has become a pertinent issue in health care. Nurses play an important role in caring for parents with cancer as well as their children. By utilizing a constructivist grounded theory approach, the aim of this study was to expand the research-based knowledge of nurses' experiences of personal emotions in this research field and to develop a subsequent explanatory theory extending the existing concept of emotional labor. Interviews with 12 nurses were conducted and analyzed. The nurses experienced this area of work as particularly emotionally challenging and attempted to manage personal emotions through regulating and processing strategies. Through this process, they sought for emotional strength by balancing their private lives and work lives to manage work-related emotions. An increased awareness of emotional labor may strengthen nurses' emotional competence in nursing.

Abstract
Psychological problems are common among people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) following stoma surgery. However, the ways in which stoma-related psychological needs are identified and addressed in health care settings remain unexplored. In this study, we investigated the perspectives of young people with a stoma and health care professionals about access to psychological support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with young people with an IBD stoma (18-29 years, n = 13) and health care professionals (n = 15), including colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, specialist nurses in IBD and stoma care, and general practitioners in England. Data collection and analysis were informed by constructivist grounded theory. Three analytic categories were developed: "initiating support-seeking," "affirming psychological needs," and "mobilizing psychological support," which capture young peoples' trajectory to access psychological support. Based on the findings, we highlight the need for both patients and health care professionals to assign greater priority to the identification of psychological symptoms post-stoma surgery. More effective care pathways, which include responsive psychological services, would enhance access to psychological support for young people with a stoma.

Abstract
Delirium is associated with increased mortality, morbidity, and length of hospital stay. In the acute stroke setting, delirium identification is challenging due to the complexity of cognitive screening in this patient group. The aim of this study was to explore how members of interprofessional stroke-unit teams identified and responded to a potential delirium in a patient. Online focus groups and interviews utilizing case vignettes were conducted with 15 participants: nurses, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and physiotherapists working in acute stroke services. Participants' understandings of delirium varied, most participants did not identify the symptoms of a possible hypoactive delirium, and nearly all participants discussed delirium symptoms in tentative terms. Aspects of interprofessional working were discussed through the expression of distinct roles around delirium identification. Although participants demonstrated an ethos of person-focused care, there are ongoing challenges involved in early identification and management of delirium in stroke survivors.

Abstract
People seeking asylum experience traumatic events and psychological difficulties in country-of-origin, in 'flight', and during re-settlement. Research with this population has focussed on using quantitative methods to examine psychopathology from exposure to traumatic events, and there is a paucity of qualitative research exploring subjective experiences of this population throughout their asylum journey. Few studies have examined ways asylum seekers might cope with such events. This study aimed to address this gap by employing Constructivist Grounded Theory to understand the ways people seeking asylum conceptualize and cope with their experiences across the asylum process. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven people seeking asylum accessing a third sector mental health project and/or primary-care health service. Four main themes emerged from the data: 'Before Asylum', 'Displacement', 'Identity in the UK' and 'Reflections on the Future'. The stress of the asylum system and adaptation to new environments are core aspects of the theory, along with an exploration of how people cope with these circumstances, via internal psychological strategies and external support sources. Prior experiences (including the development of 'inner strength') impacted upon how participants conceptualized their everyday experiences, and this shaped their considerations for the future. Service implications are discussed.

Abstract
AIM To generate a unique and contemporary leadership theory reflecting the essence of nursing within a complex health care environment. BACKGROUND As health care faces unprecedented change and increasing complexity, a nursing leadership theory embedded within complexity science is vital for teams to be innovative, nimble and focused on human-centred care. METHODS Constructivist grounded theory framed exploration of human issues embedded in nursing leadership. The constructivist approach sought thematic and theoretical sensitivity through the rich co-creative experience of participants, researchers, literature and data. Focus groups were convened over 18 months with 39 nurse leaders from bedside to boardroom. RESULTS Constant comparative methods resulted in 15 attributes. Advanced coding positioned the 15 attributes into constructs: Awakener, Connector and Upholder. Definitions emerged through the constructivist process organically connecting attributes and constructs to the potential outcomes identified in the theory as cultures of excellence, trust and caring. CONCLUSIONS The final constructivist process revealed a nursing-specific theory: human-centred leadership in health care uniquely suited to assist leaders in addressing structure, process and outcomes. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Efforts by nurse leaders to test the theory with metrics related to nursing excellence will result in validation of the theory and validation of the proposed sustained culture change.

Abstract
In this article, we explore the psychological process through which Vietnamese family caregivers adjust to their role as primary caregivers for their relatives with dementia. The study adopted a constructivist grounded theory approach to collect data with 30 face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 20 self-identified primary caregivers of older adults with dementia in Vietnam. The core adjustment process, consisting of four stages (Experience, Acknowledgment, Experiment, and Acceptance [EAEA]), to caregiving role emerged from the data. The EAEA process highlights the importance of self-perception, self-perception focused strategies, and acceptance of caregivers and suggests an adjustment process to their "becoming self" in caregiving. The EAEA process was reflected in the transactional relationship with caregiver personal factors (demographic and relational characteristics with care recipients, personal beliefs in and commitments to caregiving, and personal history of caregiving and coping with past adversity) and structural factors (cultural values and norms, social support, and social pressure).

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To explore how information concerning ICU patients´ families is included in the ICU clinicians' daily handover. BACKGROUND Handover refers to the transfer of information and care responsibility between clinicians. An effective and precise handover are of great importance to ensure quality of care. Although improvements in handovers have received increasing attention in recent decades, little is known about how information about ICU patients' family members is included in handovers. DESIGN A qualitative study using Charmaz' constructivist grounded theory approach. METHODS Data were gathered through participant observation, focus groups, dyadic and individual interviews of physicians and nurses from four ICUs in different Norwegian hospitals. The data consist of 270 observation hours, seven focus groups, three dyadic interviews and two individual interviews. Field notes and transcribed interview data were analysed using constructivist grounded theory approach. COREQ checklist was applied as reporting guideline for this study. FINDINGS "A game of whispers" emerged as the core category, representing missing information about the patient's family during the handover. Together with three subcategories: "documentation dilemmas," "being updated" and "talking together," the core category explains how transfer of family-related information between clinicians is continually processed and resolved. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates challenges related to appropriate and high-quality handover concerning ICU patients´ families. Oral handovers are essential in terms of clinicians' need to elaborate on written information and update each other. However, oral transmission involves a high risk of information loss during the handover. Written documentation about the family seems to be inadequate and poorly structured. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The study findings suggest a need for increased awareness in practice and research of the importance of transferring appropriate and reliable information about patients' families between ICU clinicians. User-friendly handover tools and patient records that include information on patients' family members should be developed.

Abstract
Research exploring illness experiences of young people with sickle cell disease (SCD) has, to date, ignored fatigue, despite the distinctive anemic nature of SCD. To examine adolescents with SCD fatigue experiences, we conducted narrative and picture-elicitation interviews with 24 adolescents in Ghana. A grounded theory, "body as a machine," was constructed from the narratives. Fatigue represented the most restrictive and disruptive aspect of growing up with SCD. Its meaning and significance laid in what it symbolized. Fatigue represented a socially undesirable feature that was stigmatizing, due to the expectations of high physicality in adolescence. Fatigue was therefore a major threat to "normalcy." The social significance of the physical body and its capacities shaped the adolescents' fatigue experiences. Managing fatigue to construct/maintain socially acceptable identities dominated the adolescents' lives. Consequently, there is a need for a recognition of the significance of fatigue to adequately support young people growing up with SCD.

Abstract
Pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is an intensive treatment that can be life-threatening. All family members experience distress. We conducted a grounded theory study using a family systems-expressive arts framework to develop a theoretical understanding of the family experience of HSCT. Six families (15 family members) participated in two interviews, drew an image, and were guided through a "dialoguing with images" process. Participants did not always perceive HSCT as an experience they had lived as a family and were surprised to hear other family members' experiences. While one mother drew, she suddenly understood it was not only her ill child, but the entire family who had "fallen down the rabbit hole." The family experience of HSCT is described across (a) the pre-HSCT trajectory, (b) family fragmentation (hospitalization), and (c) family reintegration. We identified a critical need for targeted family intervention during the transition into HSCT, throughout and following hospitalization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Young children living in families experiencing social vulnerability, including low income, mental illness, addictions, social isolation, and/or homelessness, are at risk of developmental delay. Two-generation programs can improve outcomes for preschool children, but underlying mechanisms and outcomes for younger children remain unclear. PURPOSE We explored program facilitation and identified developmental benefits of a two-generation program beginning prenatally. METHODS In our convergent, concurrent mixed methods study, we interviewed agency staff (n = 10) and held focus groups with parents (n = 14). We compared child (N = 100) development between program intake and exit as measured by the Ages and Stages Questionnaires 3rd edition. RESULTS Our core category, Engaging From Both Sides, included (a) Mitigating Adversity (focused codes Developing Trust, Letting Go of Fear, and Putting in the Effort); (b) Continual Learning (focused codes Staying Connected, and Taking it to the Community); (c) Fostering Families (focused codes Cultivating Optimism, and Happiness and Love); (d) Unravelling Cycles of Crisis (focused codes Advocating, and Helping Parents' Parent); and (e) Becoming Mainstream (focused codes Knowing Someone Has Your Back, and Managing Stress, Anxiety, and Anger). We found significant improvements in child Fine Motor, Problem-Solving, and Personal-Social domains between program intake and exit. CONCLUSIONS Our study adds to existing literature regarding mechanisms of two-generation programs beginning prenatally. Mitigating effects of intergenerational adversity was the primary motivation for interaction and engagement of staff and parents in two-generation programming, which improved child development.

Abstract
Sibling abuse is a global problem, arguably the most prevalent form of family violence, and as harmful as other familial abuse. There is evidence internationally that sibling abuse often goes unrecognized or is minimized by professionals from education, health and social care. The responses of social workers are of particular interest as key decision makers in child welfare, yet research has focused on concerns about parental abuse rather than risks presented by children within a family. This paper presents findings from research examining social worker decision-making in cases involving sibling sexual behavior. Interviews were conducted across six Scottish local authorities with twenty-one social workers having responsibility for such cases. Forty-five hours of in-depth interviews regarding 21 families and 54 children involved in sibling sexual behavior were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using constructivist grounded theory. The study found that social workers frame sibling relationships as non-abusive and of intrinsic value, and when faced with contradictory evidence engage in a number of mechanisms to maintain this frame. This paper makes a significant contribution to the sociology of siblinghood and provides an explanation that is more profound than existing theories for the internationally recognized problem of the marginalization of sibling abuse.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease, and patients with RA receive services in various settings-for example, in nurse-led follow-up consultations. The present study aimed to investigate how the management of RA in everyday life is expressed in interactions between nurses and women with RA during nursing consultations. METHODS The study was conducted in accordance with constructivist grounded theory, with data based on participant observations and subsequent interviews with 10 women with RA. RESULTS A core category was developed, "Collaboration through mutual acknowledgement", which documented how the women and nurses confirmed their shared understanding of the content and the structure of the consultation. Three subcategories were identified: (i) "On safe ground", which illustrated that biomedical factors, such as blood test results and pharmacological treatment, structured the basis of the dialogue; (ii) "Venturing forward", which documented how both parties were aware of each other's reactions when the dialogue dealt with women's perspectives of illness in their everyday lives; and (iii) "Gentle steering", which showed that the nurses gently steered the dialogue if the women strayed from the planned content. CONCLUSIONS Both parties agreed that a disease perspective consistent with biomedical factors formed the basis for further dialogue. Subsequently, the women's perspectives on illness were included, and the women felt acknowledged. Therefore, the recommendation is that the consultations start by all parties agreeing on a shared agenda to facilitate the inclusion of the women's perspectives on illness.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: In the nursing perspective of Roy's adaptation model, to be adapted means to have positive interactions with one's environment. The ability to use effective coping strategies is an essential ingredient of mental health recovery. However, coping difficulties are often a problem for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, especially those who have inadequate social support. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: "Filters in the coping process" is a grounded theory of coping in people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder. A filter effect impairs their ability and limits their opportunities to use effective coping strategies. These filters are as follows: to have been helped, to understand in one's own way, to act despite limited freedom and to modulate the process of self-disclosure. "Surface coping" is the product of the effect of these filters on coping attempts and possibilities. It does not reflect the person's real potential. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: By offering an alternative, holistic nursing perspective, the filter model provides the nurse with factors to consider when assessing clients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, so as to plan interventions towards improving their coping capacity. By allowing for the presence of surface coping, the nurse will have less tendency to form negative judgments about clients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder. ABSTRACT: Introduction Numerous studies confirm the coping difficulties of people diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder, especially those with limited social support. Further, the coping process is itself poorly understood. Aim Starting from a conceptualization of the adaptation of Roy's model, the aim of this study was to describe the coping process of people with schizophrenia spectrum disorder in the context of an inadequate social support. Method A constructivist grounded theorization was performed with a sample of 30 persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Results The results are a model named: "Filters in the coping process of people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder who have inadequate social support." The type of coping strategies used evolves over time and in accordance with the filters. The consequence of the process is "surface coping." Discussion The coping potential of people with schizophrenia spectrum disorder is affected by environmental factors as well as factors inherent to the disorder itself. The filter model provides a holistic perspective, as opposed to merely focusing on behaviours. Implication for practice The findings of this study could improve nursing interventions through a better understanding of impediments to coping: what they are, how they arise and the nature of their effects.

Abstract
Generalist health professionals, often without formal mental health training, provide treatment and care to people with serious mental illness who present with physical health problems in general hospital settings. This article will present findings from a constructivist grounded theory study of the work delivered by generalist health staff to consumers with mental illness on the general medical/surgical wards of two metropolitan hospitals in Sydney, Australia. The results analysed included three participant observations, two focus groups, and 21 interviews and hospital policy and protocol documents. A substantive theory of mental health work in general hospital settings is illustrated which conceptualizes the following categories: (i) the experience: conflicting realities and ideals; (ii) The Context: facilitating social distancing; and (iii) the social processes: invisibility affecting confidence. The categories are understood through the theoretical lens of symbolic interactionism with the theory providing insights into how the generalist health professionals understand their sense of self or identity.

Abstract
In recent times, parents have become increasingly concerned, both subjectively and objectively, about their adolescents' body height/weight growth. Parent-adolescent interactions about this issue and the potential socio-psychological consequences of such interactions should be considered as an important influencing factor on the future of adolescents' sexual and reproductive health. To achieve a greater understanding of such concerns, it is necessary to further elucidate parents' experiences on this topic, so as to expand the existing literature. This study aimed to explain the perceptions of parents' concerns regarding their adolescents' growth characteristics in the socio-cultural context of Iran as a transitional society. This paper is part of a larger qualitative study designed using the Constructivist Grounded Theory Methodology (CGTM). We conducted open-ended intensive interviews with eleven parents individually and recruited them through purposeful and theoretical sampling from a teaching hospital, community, and a primary school in Tehran with theoretical sampling variation in terms of teenagers' age, sex, and birth order, place of residence, parents' occupation and education, and the self-reported socio-economic status. Using the analytical procedures of the CGTM, we performed analyses. In the findings, the concept of 'living with constant sense of uncertainty' emerged from the subcategories including 'feeling existing and potential concern about expected minimum and maximum bio-positions of growth,' 'feeling potential concern about biological health consequences,' 'feeling potential concern about the emergence of early/late maturity signs,' 'feeling potential concern about adolescent's emotional threat,' 'feeling concerned about future employment, education, marriage, and fertility,' and 'feeling potential concern about the society's view'. These findings suggest that parents are living with a constant sense of uncertainty about their teens' growth characteristics throughout the transition from adolescence. All stakeholders including parents, health-care practitioners and policymakers, and anthropologists/sociologists should be focus on such concerns, in order to manage them and their possible socio-psychological burdens.

Abstract
This article explores some core findings from a qualitative investigation of parents' experiences of their child's treatment in an adolescent mental health service in Sydney, Australia. In particular, the research question was, "How does parents' involvement in the child/adolescent's treatment influence their perception of how they can be helpful in their child's recovery?" The theme of parent hope emerged from the broad qualitative exploration of parent's experience of their involvement in their adolescent's intensive treatment program. A purposive sample of 14 sets of parents participated, being interviewed at admission, discharge, and 6 months following their adolescent's discharge. A continuum of high, moderate, and low levels of hope were evident in this parent sample 6 months after their treatment involvement. The strongly emergent theme was the relationship between parents' hope and agency/self-efficacy. Parents who remained more passive in expecting expert helpers to fix their child experienced reduced hope months after finishing the program. When parents positively changed their interaction with their child, they felt a more sustained hopefulness. These findings generate the hypothesis that if parents are actively involved in changing themselves as part of their child's treatment, they experience increased hope and effectiveness in contributing to their child's recovery.

Abstract
Saskatoon has nearly half of the diagnoses of HIV in Saskatchewan, Canada, with an incidence rate among Indigenous populations within inner-city contexts that is 3 times higher than national rates. Previous research does not adequately explore the relations between HIV vulnerabilities within these contexts and the experiences of illness disclosure that are informed by identity transformations, experiences of stigma, and social support. From an intersectionality framework and a constructivist grounded theory approach, this research involved in-depth, semistructured interviews with 21 Indigenous people living with HIV and/or AIDS in Saskatoon, both male and female. In this article, we present the key themes that emerged from the interviews relating to experiences of HIV disclosure, including experiences of and barriers to the disclosure process. In the end, we highlight the important identity transformation and role of being and becoming a "helper" in the community and how it can be seen as a potential support for effective community health interventions.

Abstract
Purpose: Transgender persons experience a disproportionate representation in adverse mental health conditions globally. In Sweden, there are tangible efforts to improve mental healthcare overall, but transgender persons still struggle with meeting their mental healthcare needs and there is an absence of understanding the role of mental healthcare for this population and how services are being utilized. Thus, the aim of this study was to gain knowledge from transgender individuals in Sweden concerning their mental healthcare, their needs, expectations, and realities, regardless of transition status. Methods: Eleven in-depth interviews were conducted with persons who identified as transgender, older than 18 years, at some stage of transition in Sweden. Data were collected, analyzed, and interpreted using constructivist ground theory. Results: Three categories emerged from the analysis, Feeling Objectification Rather than Subjectivity, Constructing the Narrative, and Reflecting on Aspects of Care that illustrate the dual tensions at play in transgender visibility, communication with mental healthcare professionals, and expectations of care. Six subcategories further delineate the specific forces at work that construct the mental healthcare experiences for trans persons. Conclusion: Increased knowledge and visibility of transgender persons are needed to adequately serve the mental healthcare needs for this population. Currently, there are barriers that inhibit transgender persons from getting the mental healthcare assistance desired and needed, as they do not view the healthcare system as safe space. As steps are being taken to depathologize transgender identities, momentum should be continued to create space for trans persons that enables unencumbered mental health assistance.

Abstract
Patient-centered care provision is challenging under ideal circumstances; myotonic dystrophy (DM1) and Huntington's disease (HD) are examples of chronic, progressive health conditions that may challenge its limits. If we can understand how care unfolds in these conditions, health care providers may be better equipped to address patients' needs. Constructivist grounded theory informed data collection and analysis. Fourteen patients with DM1 or HD, and 10 caregivers participated in semistructured interviews. Constant comparative analysis was used to identify themes. Participants attended clinic to seek expert information and social support. Medical management, altruism, and support provided the motivation. However, motivations evolved, with clinic becoming more important for caregivers as patients deteriorated. Clinic was conceptualized as a "safe space" to actively participate in health care and research. In the absence of disease-halting or curative treatments, participants perceived that they derived a therapeutic benefit from seeking care and from engaging in education and advocacy.

Abstract
The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory article is to identify, explore, and theorize the social and psychological processes used by people with Parkinson disease. Analytic procedures generated the five-stage theory of Preserving self of people with Parkinson disease: (a) making sense of symptoms, (b) defining turning points, (c) experiencing identity dilemmas, (d) reconnecting the self, and (e) envisioning a future. Reminders of former selves and capabilities were painful; participants desperately sought normalcy. Participants developed creative methods for maintaining independence but frequently overestimated their abilities and took risks. Participants were 15 men and 10 women (ages 40-95), most of whom lived with their families. Disease status was ascertained through medication logs and two scales: Hoehn and Yahr staging and Activities of Daily Living. Data included 62 in-depth interviews, nonparticipant observation, and participant photos, videos, and related documents. Recommendations were derived from the theory to support processes of Preserving Self as interventions designed to reduce the loss of self and to enhance Preserving self. These recommendations included developing relationships, teaching expected and unexpected feelings and behaviors, and involvement with sensory integrating activities.

Abstract
This empirical article presents four narratives from an ongoing qualitative PhD project about spirituality and family therapeutic practice. Using case studies and narrative vignettes, the article presents client perspectives on being able to discuss their spirituality in therapy, and the repercussions when therapists exclude it. The article refers to current research and provides some reflections on how we can understand spirituality in the context of family therapeutic practice; therapists for holistic, cultural, and ethical reasons should acknowledge the client's spirituality. Therapists need to reflect on their own spirituality and how it may influence their relationships with clients.

Abstract
A range of literature has explored the experience of living with a long-term condition (LTC), and frequently treats such experiences and conditions as problematic. In contrast, other research has demonstrated that it may be possible to adapt and achieve well-being, even when living with such a condition. This tends to focus on meaning and the qualitative experience of living with an LTC, and offers alternative perspectives, often of the same or similar conditions. As a result of these conflicting views, this study chose to consider two conditions which, though they may lead to life-threatening illness on occasion, do not appear to impact significantly the lives of all those affected on a daily basis. The aim of this research was to explore and explain how people make sense of two long-term, potentially life-threatening health conditions, namely, thrombophilia and asthma. In doing so, it specifically considered the contribution made by information about the condition. A constructivist grounded theory approach was adopted; this enabled the generation of a theory regarding how people make sense of their LTC, whilst acknowledging the social circumstances in which this was situated. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 participants who had given consent to take part in the research. The findings demonstrate that participants undergo a two-stage process—gaining knowledge and living with a long-term condition. The theory based on these findings indicates that those who are knowledgeable about their condition, making informed decisions in relation to it, and accept their condition are able to live with it, whilst those who do not accept their condition do not fully adapt to it or integrate it into their lives.

Abstract
Children's right to participate in their own healthcare has increasingly become highlighted in national and international research as well as in government regulations. Nevertheless, children's participation in healthcare is unsatisfactorily applied in praxis. There is a growing body of research regarding children's participation, but research from the children's own perspective is scarce. The aim of this study was thus to explore the experiences and preferences for participation in healthcare situations among children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) as a foundation for creating strategies to promote their participation in pediatric healthcare. Twenty children, aged 8 to 17 years, with JIA were interviewed individually and in focus groups. In order to increase the children's opportunities to express their own experiences, different interview techniques were used, such as draw-and-tell and role play with dolls. The analysis was conducted with a constructivist grounded theory. The result explores children's perspective of influencing processes promoting their participation in healthcare situations. The core category that emerged was, "Releasing fear and uncertainty opens up for confidence and participation," and the categories related to the core category are, "surrounded by a sense of security and comfort," and "strengthened and supported to become involved." In conclusion, the knowledge gained in this study offers new insights from the perspective of children themselves, and can constitute a valuable contribution to the understanding of necessary conditions for the development of specific interventions that promote participation among children in healthcare situations.

Abstract
This paper discusses the development of a mental health nurse clinician to a mental health nurse researcher. Understanding the theoretical and professional drives that shape mental health nurses clinical practice and how that links to becoming a researcher is discussed. Mental health nurses who conduct research have to often move between their clinical roles and that of the researcher, doing this safely using a reflective supervision approach enables the nurse to conduct the research from a stronger professional and ethical standpoint. The intention of the paper is to encourage mental health nurses to engage in research and development. Shifting between the positions of a mental health nurse clinician and a qualitative researcher has some parallels to the processes in the nurse-service user relationship. This paper addresses this development from practitioner to researcher in one mental health nurse's journey through a PhD study using constructivist grounded theory. The paper examines theoretical and professional drives that have shaped my clinical practice and the role of the researcher in constructivist grounded theory, the notion of the researcher shifting between insider and outsider status, and the importance of reflexivity in conducting research. These influences will be discussed in the context of the development of a constructivist grounded theory study of the delivery of health care to service users with a mental illness in general hospital wards.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Asking for help in the operating room occurs within a surgical culture that has traditionally valued independence, decisiveness, and confidence. A tension exists between these deeply ingrained character traits and the new culture of team-based practice that emphasizes maximizing patient safety. The objective of this study is to explore surgeon-to-surgeon help-seeking behaviors during complex and unanticipated operative scenarios. STUDY DESIGN Semistructured interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of 14 consultant surgeons from multiple specialties. We used constructivist grounded theory to explore help-seeking experiences. Analysis occurred alongside and informed data collection. Themes were identified iteratively using constant comparisons. SETTING The setting included 3 separate hospital sites in a Canadian academic health sciences center. PARTICIPANTS A total of 14 consultant surgeons from 3 separate departments and 7 divisions were included. RESULTS We developed the "Call-Save-Threat" framework to conceptualize the help-seeking phenomenon. Respondents highlighted both explicit and tacit reasons for calling for help; the former included technical assistance and help with decision making, and the latter included the need for moral support, "saving face," and "political cover." "The Save" included the provision of enhanced technical expertise, a broader intraoperative perspective, emotional support, and a learning experience. "The Threat" included potential downsides to calling, which may result in near-term or delayed negative consequences. These included giving up autonomy as primary surgeon, threats to a surgeon's image as a competent practitioner, and a failure to progress with respect to independent judgment and surgical abilities. CONCLUSIONS Our "Call-Save-Threat" framework suggests that surgeons recurrently negotiate when and how to seek help in the interests of patient safety, while attending to the traditional cultural values of autonomy and decisive action. This has important implications for surgical postgraduate education and also throughout a surgeon's career trajectory.
