Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the rates of depression, anxiety, and stress and quality of sleeping among COVID-19 patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A case and control design has been employed, involving patients affected by COVID-19 infection (884 with T2DM vs. 884 controls without T2DM) and hospitalized in Istanbul (Turkey) from January to December 2021. A multivariate stepwise regression approach was used to test the associations between sociodemographic, metabolic, serum markers, mental health scores, and T2DM/COVID-19 patients' clinical presentation. A statistically significant difference between T2DM and non-T2DM was found with respect to age, gender, BMI (body mass index), smoking, physical exercise, and physical comorbidities as well as levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and sleeping disorders (0.0003 ≤ all p = 0.025). With regard to serum biomarkers, vitamin D and ferritin were identified as useful parameters of reduction of glycated hemoglobin as well as COVID-19 infection among T2DM patients. This study detected that 25% of patients with COVID-19 and T2DM experienced mental distress, with sleeping disturbances and lifestyle changes markedly impacting their clinical outcome alongside metabolic and serum parameters.

Sleep quality, quality of life, fatigue, and mental health in COVID-19 post-pandemic Türkiye: a cross-sectional study. Front Public Health 2024; 12:1250085. Abstract
Aim This study explores the predictors and associated risk factors of sleep quality, quality of life, fatigue, and mental health among the Turkish population during the COVID-19 post-pandemic period. Materials and methods A cross-sectional survey using multi-stage, stratified random sampling was employed. In total, 3,200 persons were approached. Of these, 2,624 (82%) completed the questionnaire package consisting of socio-demographic information, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the WHO Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF), Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS), Patients Health Questionnaire (PHQ-15), GAD-7 anxiety scale, and the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21). Results Significant differences between genders were found regarding socio-demographic characteristics (p < 0.01). Using PHQ-15 for depressive disorders, significant differences were found between normal and high severity scores (≥ 10), regarding age group (p < 0.001), gender (p = 0.049), educational level (p < 0.001), occupational status (p = 0.019), cigarette smoking (p = 0.002), waterpipe-narghile smoking (p = 0.039), and co-morbidity (p = 0.003). The WHOQOL-BREF indicated strong correlations between public health, physical health, psychological status, social relationships, environmental conditions, and sleep disorders (p < 0.01). Furthermore, comparisons of the prevalence of mental health symptoms and sleeping with PHQ-15 scores ≥ 10 (p = 0.039), fatigue (p = 0.012), depression (p = 0.009), anxiety (p = 0.032), stress (p = 0.045), and GAD-7 (p < 0.001), were significantly higher among the mental health condition according to sleeping disorder status. Multiple regression analysis revealed that DASS21 stress (p < 0.001), DASS21 depression (p < 0.001), DASS21 anxiety (p = 0.002), physical health (WHOQOL-BREF) (p = 0.007), patient health depression-PHQ-15 (p = 0.011), psychological health (WHOQOL-BREF) (p = 0.012), fatigue (p = 0.017), and environmental factors (WHOQOL-BREF) (p = 0.041) were the main predictor risk factors associated with sleep when adjusted for gender and age. Conclusion The current study has shown that sleep quality was associated with the mental health symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and fatigue. In addition, insufficient sleep duration and unsatisfactory sleep quality seemed to affect physical and mental health functioning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to determine the association between cigarette smoking, waterpipe smoking, and co-morbidity diseases on hearing loss. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1015 patients [386 males (38%) and 629 females (62%)] who were aged are between 25 and 65 years. The study used clinical, physical examinations and Pure-Tone Audiometry (PTA) to assess hearing. Univariate and multivariate stepwise logistic regression analyses were used for the statistical analysis. RESULTS Out of 1015 patients assessed, 199 were cigarette smokers with hearing loss (21.6%) and 111 waterpipe smokers with hearing loss (12%). There were statistically significant differences between cigarette smokers with hearing loss regarding (p<0.001), gender (p<0.001), BMI (p<0.001), hypertension (p<0.001), tinnitus (p<0.001), vertigo and/or dizziness (p<0.001), and migraine/headaches (p<0.001). Also there were statistically significant differences between waterpipe smokers with hearing loss, none smokers concerning age groups (p<0.001), BMI (p<0.001), using MP3 players (p=0.004), family history of hypertension (p=0.026), ATP III metabolic syndrome (p=0.010), IDF metabolic syndrome (p=0.012), tinnitus (p<0.001), vertigo/dizziness (p<0.001), and migraine/headaches (p=0.025). Multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis indicated that tinnitus (p<0.001), dizziness (p<0.001), nausea (p=0.001), headaches and migraine (p<=0.003), fatigue (p=0.004), and vertigo (p=0.022) were considered as risk predictors risk hearing loss related cigarette smokers. Also, analysis revealed that tinnitus (p<0.001), nausea (p=0.001), headaches and migraines (p<0.001), Type 2 diabetes mellitus (p<0.001), and vertigo (p=0.021), were considered as risk predictors for hearing loss related waterpipe smokers. CONCLUSION The present study suggests cigarette smoking and waterpipe smoking, life-style factors are possible risk factors for hearing loss among smoker participants.

Abstract
Racism and racial discrimination heavily impact on health and mental health of ethnic minorities. In this conceptual paper and narrative review, we aim to report on relevant evidence from the international literature describing the prevalence and the qualitative aspects of mental illness due to racism and ethnic- discrimination in different settings and populations. Some variables related to racism, such as cultural, institutional, interpersonal factors, as well as the concepts of perceived and internalised racism will be described and discussed. These are relevant characteristics in the explanatory model of the relationship between racism and mental health. Epidemiological data on the prevalence of depressive and psychotic symptoms as well as substance abuse/misuse among ethnic minorities in large catchment areas, such as United States and United Kingdom, will be represented. We conclude that anti-racism policies are essential in order to address racism and racial discrimination around the world. Pluralistic societies should be promoted in order to understand mental illnesses among ethnic and cultural minorities. Also, anti-racism programs should be delivered in the educational and health-care settings and their impact evaluated.

Abstract
Background The world experienced the greatest pandemic of the 21st century with the emergence of a new and readily transmissible the coronavirus disease. Understanding knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the public towards the pandemic is an essential part of developing effective preventive strategies. Aim The objective of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) concerning the coronavirus (COVID-19) among population in Istanbul. Methods This is a cross-sectional and multi-stage, stratified random sampling based on multi-center population of Istanbul. A total of 5,414 persons were contacted and 4361 participants (80.5%) gave consent. The data were analyzed using descriptive and multiple regression analyses. Results There were significant differences between low education and high educational level with respect to age groups, gender, occupation, income, residence, number of rooms and family members (P < 0.001). Responses concerning knowledge of COVID-19 indicated that subjects with high education level were significantly higher regarding knowledge of the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and methods of detecting COVID-19 respectively. Majority of the participants consider COVID-19 risk is higher than AIDS or Cancer (75.8% of low education vs. 67.2% of high education level (P < 0.001). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis revealed that monthly income status (P < 0.001), appropriate method of detecting COVID-19 (P < 0.001), occupational status (P < 0.001), medical mask prevent against COVID-19 (P < 0.001), eating or contacting wild animals (P < 0.001), isolation and treatment of people reduce risk (P < 0.001), isolation 14 days (P < 0.001), avoid going to crowded places such as train-metro, bus, restaurants and shopping (P = 0.003), COVID-19 spreads via-respiratory droplets (P = 0.004), afraid of travel (P = 0.026) were significantly associated with COVID-19 knowledge. Conclusions The current study results revealed that the educational level and occupation especially sedentary are correlated positively with knowledge, attitude and practices. This finding is not surprising since higher education levels and professional status are associated with good KAP in most epidemic diseases including COVID-19. Nevertheless, the recent experience with COVID-19 has provided lessons on strategy and policy making.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and psychological fatigue as a mental health issue among the population of Istanbul, Turkey. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS This is a cross-sectional study conducted in Istanbul, Turkey, between March and June 2020, where a total of 4,700 persons were approached and 3,672 (78%) of participants (64.4% males and 35.6% females) completed the Knowledge Attitude Practices (KAP) and Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) questionnaires. RESULTS In this study, 64.1% of participants were categorized as psychologically fatigued and 35.9% as normal. There was a significant difference between fatigued and normal participants with respect to age, educational level, occupational status, place of residence and number of family members (p < .001). Other differences related to knowledge of COVID-19 were symptoms, treatment, ways of spreading (p < .001), prevention by avoiding crowded places (p = .008) and isolation (p = .002). For attitudinal items, normal participants generally showed more positive attitudes than the fatigued in believing that COVID-19 will finally be controlled, satisfaction with preventive measures taken by the authorities, reporting suspected cases with symptoms and trusting that Turkey can overcome the COVID-19 pandemic (p < .001). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis indicated that level of education, avoiding going to crowded places, eye, nose and mouth organs are sensitive organs to the virus, keeping physical distance due to epidemic affect by COVID-19 virus, isolation and treatment of people reduce the spread of COVID-19 virus and 14-days period of time, COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through contact with the respiratory droplets of an infected person, occupational status, health education programme needed and antibody treatment variables were significantly associated with fatigue after adjusting for age, gender and income variables. CONCLUSION The current study provides valuable information for policymakers and mental health professionals worldwide regarding associations between the mental health of individuals and the ongoing outbreak, COVİD-19.

Abstract
Background Sleep disturbance is a major health issue among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) has been the most widely used instrument to measure subjective sleep disturbance. Aim The aim of this study was to determine the impact of sleeping factor structure of the PSQI as potential predictor for glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) among people living with T2DM in the Turkish community to facilitate its use in the clinical practice and research. Subjects and Methods This is a cross-sectional study and participants were between the age group of 25 and 65 years old who visited the diabetes and endocrinology department of Mega Medipol University Teaching Hospital, Istanbul. The PSQI was conducted on 871 patients with T2DM. Good sleep quality was defined as PSQI score <5. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associated risk factors for the T2DM. Results The current study showed significant differences between male and female patients with respect to their age in years, body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2), physical activity, smoking habit, sheesha smoking, income, family history of metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease (CHD), and PSQI. The results revealed significant differences between HbA1c ≤7 and females and HbA1c >7 T2DM patients with respect to gender, BMI (kg/m2), CHD, and PSQI. The study demonstrated significant differences between sleeping categories PSQI as good, average, and poor sleeping among T2DM patients with respect to age and gender. Meanwhile, significant differences were reported between sleeping categories among T2DM patients with respect to their: number of sleeping hours, wake-up time, sleeping time, HbA1c, fasting blood glucose, uric acid, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This study showed very strong statistically significant correlations between low HbA1c and poor sleep quality in patients with T2DM patients, including subjective sleep quality r = 0.763, sleep latency r = 0.327, sleep duration r = 0.472, habitual sleep efficiency r = 0.575, sleep disturbances r = 0.564, use of sleep medication r = 0.728, and daytime dysfunction r = 0.734. Multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed that Vitamin D (mmol/L) (P < 0.001), HbA1c (P < 0.001), duration of DM (P < 0.001), uric acid (mmol/L) (P < 0.001), systolic blood pressure mmHg (P = 0.006), diastolic blood pressure mmHg (P = 0.015), and BMI (P = 0.024) were considered at higher risk as the predictors for sleeping quality among T2DM patients. Conclusion The results suggest a strong positive correlation between PSQI with HbA1c levels, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, age, BMI, among type 2 diabetic patients. This study ascertains that poor sleep quality may be due to elevated level of HbA1c, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, and/or hypertension.

Abstract
Background: Several conducted studies have reported a higher and more frequent Helicobacter pylori infection rate in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and its association between H. pylori infection and T2DM. Materials and Methods: A case and control study was conducted based on 529 T2DM patients and 529 control. H. pylori was assessed by Serum anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgA. Furthermore, patients were investigated for fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), serum cholesterol, and other biochemistry parameters. Results: The findings showed a positive significantly higher antibody titer for H. pylori infection (IgA > 250) in diabetic patients (50.7%) compared to controls (38.2%) (P < 0.001). Similarly, H. pylori infection for IgG > 300 titer was higher in T2DM patients (73.5%) compared to controls 61.8%) (P < 0.001). Further, the mean values were statistically significant diabetes with H. pylori infection for IgG > 300 titer and IgA > 250 titer, regarding Vitamin D, HbA1C (P < 0.001), FBG, calcium, creatinine, total cholesterol, LHDL, triglyceride levels, uric acid, bilirubin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The diabetic patients showed higher prevalence rate of symptoms than controls included: hypertension (14.3%), vomiting (15.5%), muscular symptoms (35.2%), bloating/distension (13.2%), abdominal pain (17%), nausea (9.6%), anemia (17%), kidneys (20.8%), chronic bronchitis (14.7%), gastrointestinal (23.8%), and diarrhea (20.4%). Conclusions: The current study revealed that H. pylori infections were significantly higher in diabetic patients compared to controls. Furthermore, T2DM patients infected with H. pylori positive reported a higher prevalence rate of symptoms than H. pylori negative.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the predictive risk factors for appendicitis and the cost-effectiveness of using abdominal helical computed tomography (CT) in comparison to abdominal ultrasonography (US) for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in patients. Subjects and Methods: The typical case was a patient with abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant and suspicion of appendicitis. A total of 643 patients who were consequently treated with appendectomy upon diagnosis of acute appendicitis between January 2015 and December 2018 were included in the study. The four diagnostic alternatives chosen were US, CT, biochemistry parameters, and physical examination in the hospital. Results: There were statistically significant differences between male and female patients with regards to age, BMI, cigarette smoking, sheesha smoking, family history of diabetes, hypertension and family history of gastrointestinal discomfort (GI), anxiety (P < 0.001), red eye (P = 0.006), dizziness (P = 0.021), headache (P < 0.001), muscular symptoms, weakness and cramps (P < 0.001), bloating or swollen stomach (P < 0.001), UTI (P < 0.001), chest pain (P < 0.001), guarding (P < 0.001), loss of appetite (P = 0.004), nausea (P < 0.001) vomiting (P = 0.042), anorexia (P = 0.009), and constipation (P = 0.002). Moreover, there were statistically significant differences between male and female patients for pain (P < 0.001), pain right belly (P = 0.027), severe crumps (P = 0.007), high temperature and fever (P < 0.001), irritable bowel syndrome (P < 0.001), right iliac fossa (RIF) pain (P = 0.008), rebound tenderness (P = 0.024), positive bowel sounds (P = 0.029), and pointing tenderness (P < 0.001). Multivariate stepwise logistic regression showed nausea (P < 0.001), C-reactive protein (CRP) (P < 0.001), dizziness (P = 0.016), vomiting (P < 0.001), muscular symptoms (P = 0.007), irritable bowel syndrome (P = 0.034), guarding (P = 0.040), and loss appetite (P = 0.046) were considered at higher risk as predictors for appendicitis patients. Conclusions: CT is more cost-effective than the US and clinical examination for determining appendicitis. The current study suggested that nausea, C-reactive protein, dizziness, vomiting, muscular symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome, guarding, and loss appetite were considered as higher risk predictors for appendicitis patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to explore the co-morbidity between Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Schizophrenia (SZ) among a large number of patients describing their clinical characteristics and rate of prevalence. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A cohort-study was carried out on 396 patients affected by MDD and SZ who consecutively attended the Department of Psychiatry, Rumeilah Hospital in Qatar. We employed the World Health Organization - Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5) for diagnoses. Patients were also grouped in MDD patients with and without co-morbid SZ (MDD vs MDD/SZ) for comparisons. RESULTS A total of 396 subjects were interviewed. MDD patients with comorbid SZ (146(36.8%)) were 42.69±14.33 years old whereas MDD without SZ patients (250 (63.2%)) aged 41.59±13.59. Statistically significant differences between MDD with SZ patients and MDD without SZ patients were: higher BMI (Body Mass Index) (p=0.025), lower family income (p=0.004), higher rate of cigarette smoking (p<0.001), and higher level of consanguinity (p=0.023). Also, statistically significant differences were found in General Health Score (p=0.017), Clinical Global Impression-BD Score (p=0.042), duration of illnesses (p=0.003), and Global Assessment of Functioning (p=0.012). Rates of anxiety dimensions (e.g.: general anxiety, agoraphobia, somatisation, etc.), mood dimensions (e.g.: major depression, mania, oppositional defiant behaviour, Bipolar disorder), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, psychotic and personality dimensions were higher among MDD with SZ patients than MDD without SZ. CONCLUSION This study confirms that MDD with SZ is a common comorbidity especially among patients reporting higher level of consanguinity. MDD/SZ comorbidity presents unfavourable clinical characteristics and higher levels of morbidity at rating scales.

Abstract
AimThe aim was to determine the association between internet addition [IA] and fatigue, sleep disturbance, depression, and life style factors among school children.Subjects and methodsA cross-sectional survey based on multistage stratified random sampling and 1188 students (73.3%) gave consent during October 2011 to December 2012. Data including socio-demographic details, lifestyle and dietary habits Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Fatigue Scale, Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS] and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) test. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed.ResultsThe overall prevalence of IA among school children was 19.8%. The proportion of IA was significantly more among males (56.4%) as compare to females (43.6%; P = 0.035), school performance (P < 0.001) and family income (P = 0.032). Those with IA had significantly less number of sleep hours (6.16 ± 0.80 vs. 6.58 ± 1.29; P < 0.001) as compared to normal. Those with IA had significantly high number of hours internet use (3.82 ± 1.64 vs. 3.03 ± 1.64; P < 0.001) as compared to normal. A significantly larger proportion of IA than normal subjects reported having headaches (P = 0.010), double vision (P = 0.037), eye hurt (P = 0.021), eye tired (P = 0.005), dizziness (34.4% vs. 27.3%; P = 0.002), fatigue, and hearing problem (P = 0.048). A significantly larger proportion of students with IA most frequently gratifying site (19.9% vs. 11.6%; P < 0.001), browsed games (38.6% vs. 29.9%; P = 0.010), chat sites (29.7% vs. 22%; P = 0.013), email (54.2% vs. 63.1%; P = 0.36), and research (61.0% vs. 69.2%; P = 0.017).ConclusionThe current study confirmed the of evidence linking problematic internet use with negative fatigue, greater numbers of symptoms, anxiety, sleeping disturbances, depressive and lifestyle risk factors, among vulnerable young children.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
Background: To explore the essence of game changing on applying joint venture (JV) approach for healthcare system improvement in developing countries. Methods: This is cross-sectional study exploring the factors influencing the successful implementation of JV for the healthcare services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The study included: Qatar Statistical Authority, CIA fact book, Ministry of Health Annual Report, Hamad Medical Corporation Annual Report, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development information, and Qatar's healthcare system history. Results: The research indicated that the LMIC healthcare system would benefit from affiliation with leading technology partner for healthcare reform. The findings support the view of LMIC healthcare systems’ needs to incorporate joint venture approach in implementing JV concept for process improvement and knowledge transfer to contribute in country economic growth, development, and stability. Current study explored evidence supporting decision maker and management control of JV trends in different ways in comparison with developed countries. JV can also help the organization to share the risk and cost of large capital investment. Conclusions: The present study supports observations on expending the use of JVs as approach for improvement in LMIC healthcare system. The current study confirmed the advantages of JV which include helping businesses grow faster, increasing productivity, and generating greater profits, both parties sharing the risks and costs, accessing new markets and distribution networks.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) attending primary healthcare. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This is a cross-sectional study and participants were between 25 and 70 years old who visited the diabetes and endocrinology department of Mega Medipol University Teaching Hospital, Istanbul. The diagnosis of RLS was performed according to the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group consensus criteria. The RLS and PSQI instruments were conducted on 871 patients with T2DM. Good sleep quality was defined as PSQI score <5. RLS severity was assessed by the Restless Legs Syndrome-6 Scales (RLS-6). The scale development and validation was carried out using Rasch measurement model. RESULTS The prevalence of RLS was 22.8% including 60.3% of females and 39.7% of males. This study showed significant differences between RLS and no RLS patients with respect to their age (years), body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2), physical activity, smoking habit, sheesha smoking, income, and sleeping quality with PSQI. Also, the analysis presented that statistically significant differences between both RLS and no RLS reported sleep complaints including difficulty falling asleep, inadequate sleep, anytime fatigue, and leg discomfort. There were statistically significant differences between RLS and no RLS patients regarding hypoglycemia, numbness in legs, retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy high blood pressure, depression, stroke, anemia, diabetic foot, ulcer, arthritis, respiratory disease, metabolic syndrome, and coronary heart disease. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences between RLS and no RLS concerning the number of sleeping hours, wake-up time (AM), sleeping time (PM), BMI (kg/m2), HbA1c, vitamin D, calcium, creatinine, fasting blood glucose, low-density lipoprotein, triglyceride, uric acid, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (mmHg). CONCLUSION This study confirms positive relation and high prevalence of RLS among patients with T2DM visiting primary healthcare. The results suggest that physical activity is associated with a better perception of functional capacity and pain in diabetic patients with RLS, and thus a more active lifestyle should be encouraged.

Abstract
Background: There has been substantial interest in developing methods to predict the risk of breast cancer.
The Gail model is one the first model have been widely used to identify women at higher risk of breast cancer. Aim: This
study aimed to determine the 5-year and the general life-time risk of breast cancer and also to determine breast cancer
predictors in women using the Gail model. Methods: We used the Gail model to estimate the risk of breast cancer
in female Turkish outpatients aged above 35 years in this cross-sectional study. Age, life-style habits, breast-feeding
duration, family history of breast cancer, and body mass index were compared between high and low-risk subjects.
We have performed the Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item
(GAD-7) tools on patients regarding depression and anxiety. We also assessed the association of these covariates with
the estimated risk of breast cancer in multivariate linear regression analysis. Results: We enrolled 1065 subjects with
a mean age of 52.9 ± 8.4 years. The mean of the five-year risk for breast cancer was 1.33%±0.6. Meanwhile, the mean of
lifetime risks for breast cancer was 10.15%±3.18, respectively. Nearly one-third of the participants had one child,
55.9% had breast-fed their children more than six months. Meanwhile, 18.5% of the subjects had a high depression
score, 15.2% had a high anxiety score. Higher age, age at first birth, and parity; lower age at menarche; presence of
menopause and family history of breast cancer were higher in the high-risk group. Higher age, and age at first birth;
lower age at menarche; family history of breast cancer, presence of menopause, and parity were independently associated
with higher breast cancer risk. Conclusion: We identified certain risk factors for breast cancer in our study population
and Gail model is a reliable and useful breast cancer risk prediction model for clinical decision-making. This study
contributes to the body of evidence in order to facilitate early detection and better plan for possible malignancies in
Turkish population.

Abstract
Background: The unfair distribution and delivery of health-care resources have been recognized as a problem in the worldwide. In the past 18 years, Turkey has undergone rapid social, cultural, and economic changes. The lifestyle and dietary habits of its people have also been changing, and the rates of diabetes, obesity, cancer, and other chronic diseases have increased dramatically over the past two decades. The health transformation program (HTP) has improved the Turkish health-care system since 2003. The main goal of HTP was to progress government, to provide equality between citizens, to give satisfaction to users and providers, and to subsidise the health-care system in Turkey. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess health-care services and health care quality delivery in the Republic of Turkey with special emphasis on governmental hospitals, university hospitals, primary healthcare centers (PHC) and to make comparison with low-, medium- and high-income countries. Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive study. The ministry of health Annual Reports, websites of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), The World Fact Book, organization for economic cooperation and development report, Compendium of Health Statistics, the Google engine, and PubMed were searched for information about Turkey's health-care system and its history. Papers and websites in English were evaluated. There was no restriction on types of articles and sources. Results: Turkey has made outstanding reforms in health status in the last two decades, especially after the implementation of the HTP. The doctor's perception has more influence regarding consultation length and visit than the patient’s. The results of consultations in volunteer practices in Istanbul showed that the mean and SD of the consultation length for the whole sample of 360 patients was 7.95 ± 4.38, (with range = 3–25 min). Consultation time has been affected by the patients’ diseases, genders that women got longer consultation time, medical practices at the urban or rural areas, and ages which older patients required longer consultation time. The current study revealed that increasing doctor's workload leads to decrease the length of consultations. Moreover, average life expectancy reached 75.3 for men and 80.7 for women in 2015. The infant mortality rate decreased to 10.7/1000 live births in 2015, down from 117.5 in 1980. The leading causes of death are diseases of the circulatory system followed by cancer. Conclusions: The Turkish health system and health-care delivery have been improved over the last decade. Still far from perfect, there is a particular planning to increase medical workforce in PHC including well-trained staffs for a specific area. An urgent need is to acquire more accurate and reliable data from hospital and PHC centers in Turkey. Additional some attempts should be made to assess quality of healthcare in relation to services and process.

Abstract
Aim: To ascertain the active role of uric acid and vitamin D as potential biomarkers for impaired glucose metabolism among people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Turkish community. Subjects and Methods: This study was based on 680 patients with T2DM and 680 healthy subjects aged between 25 and 70 years, who visited the diabetes and endocrinology department of Istanbul Mega Medipol University Teaching Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey, during January 2016 to April 2018. The investigated biochemical indices included lipid profiles (low-density lipoprotein [LDL], high-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, and triglyceride [TG]), uric acid, blood pressure (BP), serum creatinine, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), postprandial glucose, and any related comorbidities. Results: This study reported significant differences between family history duration of patients with T2DM of ≤5 and >5 years when compared to that of control subjects with respect to body mass index (BMI), smoking habit, sheesha smoking, income, family history of metabolic syndrome, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and nephropathy. Similarly, significant differences were found between patients with T2DM (with family history T2DM duration of less than 5 years and more than 5 years in contrast to healthy subjects’ level of LDL, TG, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, systolic BP (SBP), bilirubin, albumin, magnesium, potassium, calcium, number of sleeping hours, and TSH. We uncovered the correlation between serum uric acid level with the clinical biochemical indices related to T2DM: serum calcium (r = 0.336), magnesium (r = 0.272), potassium (r = 0.205), HbA1c (r = 0.638), fasting blood glucose (P = 0.486), bilirubin (r = 0.251), albumin (r = 0.285), LDL (r = 0.322), TG (r = 0.434), diastolic BP (DBP) (r = 0.392), SBP (r = 0.344), BMI (r = 0.482), waist circumference (WC) (r = 0.366), age (r = 0.217), number of sleeping hours (r = 0.275), and TSH (r = 0.445). Multivariate stepwise logistic regression showed that variables, such as serum vitamin D, uric acid, TSH, HbA1c, DBP, WC, BMI, and SBP, were considered at higher risk as significant (P < 0.001) predictors for T2DM. Conclusion: The results suggest strong positive correlation between serum uric acid level with BP (SBP and DBP), age, BMI, and WC among patients with T2DM. This study ascertains that an increase in uric acid level may be due to elevated level of HbA1c, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, and/or hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychiatric co-morbidity is a common condition, partly due to the overlap of symptoms in the categorical diagnosis of mental disorders. The co-occurrence of schizophrenia (SZ) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common and challenging co-morbid condition. Also, the relationship between SZ and OCD remains unclear. AIM The aim of this study was to describe the co-morbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) among schizophrenia (SZ) patients and compare clinical characteristics of schizophrenia patients with versus without comorbid OCD. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A cohort-study was carried out on 396 patients enrolled between November 2011 to June 2014 at the Department of Psychiatry, Rumeilah Hospital in Qatar. We employed the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI), and Structured clinical interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5) for diagnoses, the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale Symptom Checklist for scoring OCD. Patients were grouped in SZ patients with and without comorbid OCD (SZ-OCD vs SZ). RESULTS 396 subjects were interviewed. Age of SZ-OCD patients was 42.69 ± 14.33 (years old) whereas SZ patients without OCD ranged 41.59 ± 13.59 years old. There were statistically significant differences in clinical characteristics between SZ with and without OCD : age (p = 0.010), BMI (body mass index; p = 0.011), education (p = 0.033), employment (p = 0.019), cigarette smoking (p = 0.039), sheesha smoking (p = 0.008), and prevalence of consanguinity (p = 0.043). In particular, the rate of consanguinity in the current generation was 31.8% [95% CI = 29.1-34.7]. Also, there were statistically significant differences at Hamilton Depression score, General Health Score, Clinical Global Impression- Score, duration of illnesses, and Global Assessment of Functioning (p < 0.001). The results show that anxious, mood and psychotic dimensions rated higher among SZ - OCD ones than SZ only patients. CONCLUSION This study confirms that SZ-OCD is a common co-morbidity and prevalence of SZ OCD is higher among patients reporting a degree of consanguinity. Even if this condition is under-recognized in clinical practice, it may significantly change SZ presentation and outcome since psychopathological dimensions report higher scores in the co-morbidity sample.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes (T2D) susceptibility is influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors. To date, the majority of genetic studies of T2D have been in populations of European and Asian descent. The focus of this study is on genetic variations underlying T2D in Qataris, a population with one of the highest incidences of T2D worldwide. RESULTS Illumina HiSeq exome sequencing was performed on 864 Qatari subjects (574 T2D cases, 290 controls). Sequence kernel association test (SKAT) gene-based analysis identified an association for low frequency potentially deleterious variants in 6 genes. However, these findings were not replicated by SKAT analysis in an independent cohort of 12,699 exomes, primarly due to the absence of low frequency potentially deleterious variants in 5 of the 6 genes. Interestingly one of the genes identified, catenin beta 1 (CTNNB1, β-catenin), is the key effector of the Wnt pathway and interacts with the nuclear receptor transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2), variants which are the most strongly associated with risk of developing T2D worldwide. Single variant analysis did not identify any associated variants, suggesting the SKAT association signal was not driven by individual variants. None of the 6 associated genes were among 634 previously described T2D genes. CONCLUSIONS The observation that genes not previously linked to T2D in prior studies of European and Asian populations are associated with T2D in Qatar provides new insights into the complexity of T2D pathogenesis and emphasizes the importance of understudied populations when assessing genetic variation in the pathogenesis of common disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and thyroid diseases among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. METHODS This was a cohort case and control study, 546 T2DM patients and 546 control study participants were enrolled, aged between 25 and 65 years. The subjects were also investigated for fasting blood glucose levels (FBG), post prandial glucose (PPG,) glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T3, T4, and presence of other comorbid conditions. Thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy was suggested to patients whose thyroid nodules were greater than 1.00 cm. RESULTS There were significant differences between T2DM patients and control subjects regarding BMI (kg/m2), physical activity, cigarette smoking, sheesha smoking, family history of diabetes, hypertension and family history of thyroid nodules. The clinical biochemistry values among T2DM for vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, HbA1c, HLDL, LDL, triglyceride, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were lower than control subjects, but higher in creatinine, albumin, TSH, T3, and T4 which appeared statistically significant differences (P < 0.001). Also, the study revealed statistically significant differences between subjects vitamin D deficiency and with thyroid nodules for calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, HbA1c, high density lipoprotein (HDL), SBP and DBP, TSH, T3, and T4 among T2DM patients and control subjects (P < 0.001). Multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that TSH, HbA1c, vitamin D deficiency, SBP (mm Hg), BMI, family history of DM, serum calcium level and family history of thyroid were considered at higher risk as predictors of thyroid among T2DM patients. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that obesity, HbA1c, the environment, and genetic susceptibility among T2DM, may increase the risk of thyroid disease and cancer. Although evidence has shown that thyroid cancer incidence has been rising more rapidly over time than the occurrence of cancers of other sites, due to an increase of obesity, diabetes and lack of physical activity, this study lacks of direct evidence supporting this conclusion.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Camel's milk is a safe and therapeutic nutrient. Camel's milk allergy is almost unknown. OBJECTIVE To identify the clinical and laboratory features of camel's milk allergy. METHODS In this retrospective study, the records of patients with camel's milk allergy were reviewed. Data collected included age, sex, clinical presentation, concomitant allergies, family history, laboratory tests (complete blood cell count [CBC], white blood cell [WBC] count, total immunoglobulin E [IgE], food specific IgE), and skin-prick tests (SPT) to camel's milk and other foods. RESULTS Nine patients (four male patients, five female patients; mean age ± SD 4.3 ± 2.4 years) presented with cutaneous urticaria and/or angioedema (five patients [55.6%]) and anaphylaxis (four patients [44.4%]). Allergic reactions occurred within the first 15 minutes of ingesting camel's milk in all the patients (100%). Concurrent allergies were observed in 77.8% of the patients, of whom, five patients (71.4%) had atopic dermatitis (AD) and two patients (22%) had cow's milk allergy that exacerbated AD. All the patients (100%) had a family history of allergies. The family farm was the source of camel's milk in all the patients (100%). The WBC count was 9425 ± 1452.8 (mean ± SD) cells/μL, and eosinophils was 612 ± 455.4 (mean ± SD) cells/μL, and the median IgE was 301.5 kU/mL. A camel's milk SPT resulted in a wheal of 8.7 ± 4.9 (mean ± SD) mm. CONCLUSION Camel's milk allergy is a distinct, yet very rare, disease entity. Cutaneous and systemic allergic reactions are the main clinical manifestations. Concomitant other allergies, viz., AD, and positive family history are risk factors. Early life exposure to camel's milk is a possible risk factor. High blood eosinophil counts and total IgE levels were observed in patients with camel's milk allergy. In the presence of a consistent and specific clear-cut history of camel's milk-related symptoms, a SPT was a dependable confirmatory test.

Abstract
AIM: The objective of study to explore the association between thyroid dysfunction and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) related to family history and co-morbid conditions.METHODS: This was a case and control study, 762 T2DM patients and 762 control study participants were enrolled, aged between 25 and 65 years. The study based on biochemistry parameters included: fasting blood glucose levels (FBG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), serum cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T3, and T4.RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between T2DM patients and control subjects regarding BMI, physical activity, smoking, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, family history thyroid nodules, and number of sleeping hours. The study found statistically significant differences between T2DM and control subjects on calcium (p=0.028), magnesium (p<0.001), potassium (p<0.001), phosphorous (p=0.038), fasting blood glucose (p<0.001), HbA1c (p<0.001), LDL (p=0.002), albumin (p<0.001), billirubin (p=0.015), triglyceride (p<0.001), SBP (p=0.009) and, DBP (p=0.002), TSH (p<0.001), T3 (p<0.001), and T4 (p<0.001). There were statistically significant differences between subjects with and those without thyroid nodules for calcium (p<0.001), magnesium (p<0.001), phosphorous (p=0.022), HDL (p=0.050), TSH (p<0.001), T3 (p<0.001), and T4 (p<0.001). Multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that TSH mIU/L ( <0.001), HbA1c ( p< 0.001), family history of thyroid (p< 0.001), Waist circumference, (p<0.001), SBP mmHg (p= 0.002), [DBP mmHg ( p= 0.003), BMI (p= 0.006), Serum Calcium level (mmol/L) (p <0.001], and family history of DM ( p= 0.015) were considered at higher risk as a predictors of thyroid amongT2DM patients.CONCLUSION: The study found a high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in Turkish T2DM patients compared to the general population. This study suggests that obesity, HbA1c, the environment, and genetic susceptibility among T2DM, may increase the risk of thyroid disease and cancer.

Abstract
AIM The current study was aiming to investigate the relation between vitamin D, retinopathy, and hearing loss among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. METHODS Cross-sectional study carried on 638 subjects aged between 20 and 60 years who visited the Endocrinology, Ophthalmology, and ENT Outpatient Clinics of the Medipol Hospital during the period from March 2016 to May 2017. Two audiometers Grason Stadler GSI 61 and Interacoustics AC40 Clinical audiometer were used to evaluate the hearing loss. Risk factors for diabetic retinopathy were evaluated, including age, sex, diabetes duration, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), hypertension, and lipid profiles. RESULTS The mean age (± SD, in years) for retinopathy with hearing loss versus normal subjects was 47.7 ±10.2 versus 48.5±9.1. The associated risk factors were significantly higher in T2DM with hearing loss, hypertension (32.6% versus 15.7%), tinnitus (40.0% versus 18.0%), vertigo (59.7% versus 26.8%), and headache (54.9% versus 45.3%), than in normal hearing diabetes. There were statistically significant differences between hearing impairment versus normal hearing for vitamin D [19.40±9.71 ng/ml versus 22.67±9.28 ng/ml; p<0.001], calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, albumin, systolic blood pressure [131.70±9.25 Hg versus 127.73±11.98 Hg], diastolic blood pressure [82.20±8.60 mm Hg versus 79.80±8.20 mm Hg], and microalbuminuria. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that variables such as vertigo, duration of DM, mobile/I pad phone, vitamin D deficiency, sleeping disturbance, headache, frequently TV watching, tinnitus, cigarette smokers, and hypertension were considered at higher risk as a predictors of retinopathy with hearing loss among diabetic patients. CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency is considered as a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy and hearing loss among diabetic patients. Meanwhile, hyperglycemia could be considered as a modifiable risk factor for diabetic retinopathy; tight glycemic control may be the most effective and important therapy for improving quality of life and substantially reducing the incidence of retinopathy and in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Background An insufficient number of studies have been carried out in the Middle East to evaluate the role of structured psychotherapeutic interventions in enhancing breast cancer patients’ psychological well-being, quality of life and treatment compliance. This study has been designed to address this limitation by exploring the benefit of two structured psychotherapeutic interventions, crisis counseling and psychoeducation, in enhancing breast cancer patients’ psychological well-being, quality of life and treatment compliance in Qatar. Methods A total of 201 women with early-stage breast cancer from the state of Qatar were recruited and randomized into either the control group or one of the treatment groups (crisis counseling or psychoeducation). Each of the two treatment interventions consisted of a total of six 60- to 90-minute sessions, which were provided over a period of 12 weeks. The short- and long-term benefits of the crisis counseling and psychoeducation interventions were evaluated in terms of improving patients’ psychological well-being, quality of life and treatment compliance by asking all the patients to complete the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, 21 item version (DASS-21) and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life scale (QLQ-C30) instruments at different points in time and by monitoring their compliance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. Results This study revealed that both of the study interventions, crisis counseling and psychoeducation, were effective in improving women’s psychological well-being and quality of life over time in comparison to the control group, but had no significant impact on patients’ compliance with treatment. In addition, the study showed that psychoeducation conferred a greater advantage than did the crisis counseling model, especially in improving women’s psychological well-being over time. Conclusion This study is considered the first of its kind in Qatar to provide evidence on the benefit of crisis counseling and psychoeducation interventions in improving the psychological well-being and quality of life of women with early-stage breast cancer in Qatar. In addition, this study has provided innovative research that can be used as evidence to propose changes to the psychotherapy services for breast cancer patients in Qatar. This research study aims to provide a first step toward further research in the future, which will hopefully lead to a better health care system for cancer patients in Qatar.

Abstract
Aim: The present research aimed to determine the relation between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and thyroid volume and nodule prevalence among Turkish population patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was carried on 850 patients between the ages of 20 and 65 who visited the diabetic, endocrinology, and general surgery outpatient clinics in the Mega Medipol and Medipol Hospital between January 2014 and December 2017. This study included sociodemographic information, body mass index (BMI), diabetes mellitus (DM), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures, and clinical biochemistry results such as serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose levels, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), T3, T4, and other MetS parameters. Thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy was suggested to patients whose thyroid nodules were greater than 1.00 cm. The definition and diagnostic of MetS used as proposed by the National Cholesterol Education Program—Third Adult Treatment Panel. Results: There were statistically significant differences between patients with thyroid nodules and those without regarding age, gender, BMI, physical activity, cigarette smoking, shisha smoking, family history of diabetes, hypertension, and thyroid. Meanwhile, statistically significant differences were found between with and without MetS for calcium (P = .028), magnesium (P < .001), potassium (P < .001), fasting blood glucose (P = .047), HbA1c (P < .001), HDL (P < .001), LDL (P < .001), albumin (P = .008), bilirubin (P = .002), triglyceride (P = .011), SBP (P = .001) and DBP (P = .011), TSH (P = .005), T3 (P < .001), and T4 (P < .001). Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences between participants with and without thyroid nodules for calcium (P < .001), magnesium (P < .001), potassium (P < .001), fasting blood glucose (P = .010), HbA1c (P = .019), HDL (P < .001), LDL (P = .012), albumin (P = .002), bilirubin (P < .001), triglyceride (P < .001), SBP (P < .001) and DBP (P = .004), TSH (P = .015), T3 (P < .001), and T4 (P < .001). Multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis used for independent predictors for the presence of thyroid nodules which TSH (P < .001), family history of thyroid and DM (P < .001), age in years (P = .025), DBP and SBP (P < .001), BMI (P = .014), HDL-C (P = .034), and waist circumference (in cm; P = .044) were considered at higher risk as a predictors of thyroid with patients with MetS. Conclusion: The results of the current study confirm a strong positive association between MetS and thyroid nodules risk among patients with MetS. This study suggest that the patients with MetS can be considered as a marker to have moderately increased risk of future thyroid nodules and cancer. Meanwhile, MetS, obesity, and hyperglycemia could be a qualifiable and modifiable risk factor for thyroid nodules. The regularly glycemic control may be the most important treatment for the reduction of incidence or the prevention of thyroid.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the gender differences in the prevalence of somatoform disorders among a sample of Qatari patients who were visiting primary health care centers and to investigate the severity of diagnostic categories and the most frequent somatic symptoms in these patients. The first stage of the study was conducted with the help of general practitioners, using the somatic symptom module of the Patient Health Questionnaire 12-item General Health Questionnaire. Overall, 2320 subjects were approached, and a total of 1689 patients, of whom 892 were men and 797 were women, agreed to participate in the study. The prevalence rate of somatoform disorders among the total screened sample was 23.9%. The prevalence rate was slightly higher in Qatari women (24.2%) than in Qatari men (23.7%). Housewives (43.5%) and men in administrative posts (37.9%) reported higher somatic symptoms compared to other professions. Prolonged depressive reaction was significantly higher in women compared to men ( P = .003). There was a significant gender difference in certain psychiatric diagnostic categories such as depressive episode, recurrent depressive disorder, dysthymia, and brief depressive reaction. Backache was the most common reported symptom in men, whereas headache was more common in women. The present study revealed that the prevalence of somatoform disorders in Qatar is as high as the overall prevalence reported in prior studies done in other primary care settings. The prevalence of somatoform disorders was slightly higher in Qatari women than in men.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate iron deficiency anemia and Vitamin D deficiency among autism children and to assess the importance of risk factors (determinants). Subjects and Methods: This was a case–control study conducted among children suffering from autism at the Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. A total of 308 cases and equal number of controls were enrolled. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic was the instrument used for diagnosis of Autism. Results: The mean age (±standard deviation, in years) for autistic versus control children was 5.39 ± 1.66 versus 5.62 ± 1.81, respectively. The mean value of serum iron levels in autistic children was severely reduced and significantly lower than in control children (74.13 ± 21.61 μg/dL with a median 74 in autistic children 87.59 ± 23.36 μg/dL in controls) (P = 0.003). Similarly, the study revealed that Vitamin D deficiency was considerably more common among autistic children (18.79 ± 8.35 ng/mL) as compared to healthy children (22.18 ± 9.00 ng/mL) (P = 0.004). Finally, mean values of hemoglobin, ferritin, magnesium; potassium, calcium; phosphorous; glucose, alkaline phosphate, hematocrit, white blood cell, and mean corpuscular volume were all statistically significantly higher in healthy control children as compared to autistic children (P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that serum iron deficiency, serum calcium levels, serum Vitamin D levels; ferritin, reduced physical activity; child order, body mass index percentiles, and parental consanguinity can all be considered strong predictors and major factors associated with autism spectrum disorders. Conclusion: This study suggests that deficiency of iron and Vitamin D as well as anemia were more common in autistic compared to control children.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hearing loss and its association with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a highly endogamous population. DESIGN This is a cross-sectional study. SETTING The present study is carried out in Ear Nose Throat (ENT) and Endocrinology outpatient clinics of the Hamad General and Rumeilah Hospitals, Hamad Medical Corporation. SUBJECTS All subjects aged between 20 and 59 years who visited the Endocrinology and ENT outpatient clinics of the Hamad Medical Corporation with hearing difficulty were included in this study during the period from January 2013 to July 2014. METHOD During the study period, prevalence, hearing, audiological test, family history and medical problems associated with hearing impairment in middle aged patients were recorded. Two audiometers Grason Stadler GSI 61 and Madsen Orbiter 922 were used to evaluate the hearing loss. RESULT Majority of the hearing loss observed at the age above 45 years old, (44.8% vs 51.7%, p=0.05). The prevalence of hearing impairment was higher in Qataris than in non-Qataris (59.7% vs 46.6%, p<0.001). The consanguineous marriages were observed higher in Hearing loss (32.1%) than in normal hearing (21.8%) (p=0.028). The mean of diabetes onset duration (7.8±4.12years), sleeping disorder (5.81±1.29h), obese subjects (38% vs 27.4%); family history of diabetes (30.6 vs 23.1%) were higher among hearing impairment. The associated risk factors were significantly higher in T2DM with hearing loss, hypoglycemia (32.8% vs 27.4%), retinopathy (313% vs 18.5%), Nephropathy (17.9% vs 9.8%), Neuropathy (17.9% vs 10.2%), macro-vascular disease (11.9% vs 6.2%), diabetic foot ulcer (20.9% vs 12.6%), Tinnitus (68.7% vs 51.3%), and Vertigo (25.4% vs 16.9%) than in normal hearing diabetes. There was a statistically significant differences between hearing impairment and normal hearing among T2DM regarding hearing assessment frequency (p=0.041). There were statistically significant differences between hearing impairment versus normal hearing for vitamin D [18.91±7.65ng/mL vs 22.85±9.00ng/mL; p<0.001], calcium [1.80±0.12ng/mL vs 1.96±0.14mmol/L; p<0.001], magnesium [0.80±0.09mmol/L vs 0.8±0.14mmol/L; p<0.001], phosphorous [1.42±0.30mmol/L vs 1.56±0.26mmol/L; p<0.001], ceatinine [1.42±0.30mmol/L vs 1.56±0.26mmol/L; p<0.001], cholesterol [4.92±1.08mmol/L vs 4.40±1.01mmol/L; p=0.035], LDL [1.92±0.88mmol/L vs 2.09±0.92mmol/L; p=0.024], albumin [43.1±6.10mmol/L vs 39.8±7.93mmol/L; p=0.010], systolic blood pressure [135.8±16.6Hg vs 130.2±12.5Hg; p=0.017] and, diastolic blood pressure [85.1±9.2mmHg vs 83.0±7.9mmHg; p=0.012]. There were highly statistically significant differences between hearing impairment versus normal for both side right and left ear frequency in Db unit (p<0.001). The multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed that head ache (p<0.001), family history of DM (p<0.001), sleep disturbance (p<0.001), high blood pressure (p=0.006), consanguinity (p=0.010), nationality (p=0.014), age in years (p=0.025), and sheesha smokers (p=0.045) were considered at higher risk as a predictors of hearing loss among diabetic patients. CONCLUSION The current study results confirm previous reports that adults with DM and hypertension associated showed greater hearing impairment in highly endogamous population… Diabetic patients with hearing loss were likely to have high blood glucose and other risk factors like hypertension, retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy.

Abstract
AIM The aim was to explore the association between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus [T2DM] treatment satisfactions of patients regarding their socio-economic, life-style, history medication and clinical outcome in a Turkish population SUBJECT AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted from February 2016 to September 2016. Of the total 1500 diabetic patients approached, 1094 (72.9%) gave their consent. Data analysis included, sociodemographic, serum lipid profiles (LDL, HDL), calcium, uric acid, blood pressure and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) at baseline and after six months. The Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (DTSQ) tools were used to measure the patient satisfaction. RESULTS The mean and standard deviation of age among gender, there were significant differences between males (51.81±14.40) and females (49.76±13.99) (p=0.024). There were statistically significant differences between males and females regarding place of living (city 76% vs town 26%) p<0.001) and consanguinity (p=0.040). Almost of the patients with diabetes were overweight (males 44.5% vs females 41.8%) while more than a quarter (31.2%) males were obese. Among patients with diabetes, significantly larger proportion were treated for DM with insulin (females 28.8% vs males 22.5%) and 'insulin & oral anti diabetic drugs' (females 21.6% vs males 18.4%%; p<0.001) in comparison. Reported average sleeping haours was significantly more among males (6.5±1.1 vs. 6.1±1.2; p<0.001) than females. Males and females reported significantly greater improvements in mean values of blood glucose (-2.07 p<0.001; vs. -2.36; p=0.007), HbA1c (-1.72 p<0.001; vs. -1.47 p=0.038), potassium (+0.98 p<0.001; vs. +0.93 p<0.005); albumin (-3.38 p<0.001; vs. -3.60; p<0.001); billirubin (-0.69 p=0.049; vs. -0.98; p<0.001); uric acid (+11.9 p=0.017; vs. +14.3; p<0.001); systolic blood pressure (-3.86 p<0.001; vs. -3.2 p<0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (-3.17 p<0.001; vs. -3.2 p<0.001) in comparison to 6 months before. Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that the satisfaction DTSQ scores for HbA1c (p<0.001), h of sleep (p<0.001), neuropathy (p=0.007), diabetic education (p=0.014), SBP (mmHg) (p=0.021) DBP (mmHg) (p=0.028) were identified as significantly associated with higher treatment satisfaction. CONCLUSION The study confirms a positive correlation between diabetes patient's satisfaction with care and treatment. Females DM patients compared to males had a better satisfaction score with current treatment, unacceptably low blood glucose level, flexibility in treatment and understanding of DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Very little research and survey have been performed on the occupational health, hazards, and working condition of urban and rural of workers in Qatar. The aim of the current study is to identify the health status, lifestyle condition, working-related problems, and accidents experienced by Indian subcontinental migrants (ISCM) in Qatar and their access to health-care facilities. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study based on a representative sample of 1186 workers and study covering sociodemographic characteristics, medical conditions, and health-seeking behaviors and personal experience. RESULTS There were statistically significant differences between semi-urban and urban migrant workers in terms of educational, occupation, income, working hours, and accommodation type (P < 0.001). Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences between migrant workers in terms of body mass index, delay in receiving salary, the right to medical insurance and sick day entitlement, cigarettes and shisha smoking, amenities, having on-site safety measure, and sleeping hours (P < 0.01). Moreover, there were statistically significant differences between semi-urban and urban migrant workers in terms of pain, cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal, and pseudoneurologic and medical symptoms (P < 0.01). Multiple logistic regression was used for predictors' health problems in migrant workers such as the absence of drinking water, tap water availability, safety facility tools, occupational status, shisha smoking, toilet facility, working hours, and accommodation type were considered the strong predictors. CONCLUSIONS The current study revealed that there is a lack of insufficient information for the migrants about their lifestyle, medical conditions, health risks, injury, and rights privilege in relation to legal working condition and health services.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between different demographic variables, hopelessness,
depression and social support of Breast cancer patients in Qatari’s population. Design: This is an observational cohort
hospital based study. Subjects and Methods: The study included 678 breast cancer patients. The questionnaires included
a demographic questionnaire, the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Back Depression Scale (BDS) and Multidimensional
Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The demographic questionnaire was used to assess patients’ basic
information including gender, age, marital status, education, family size, and place of residence. Medical information
regarding cancer stage, the time passed since diagnosis, treatment, and duration of disease were recorded. Results:
The mean age of the studied women was 47.7±10.2 years. Among the studied patients, 34.7% were Qataris and 65.3%
were Arab expatriates. Nearly 39.2% of the patients were in pre-menopausal status and 60.8% in post-menopausal
status. 86.1% of women were married. 14.6% were illiterate women, 20.9% were university graduates and 37.2%
were housewives. Smoking habit was less common in studied Arab women (9.1%), but, sheesha smoking was more
common, 17.7%. Daily physical activity indicated 25.7% were walking 30 minutes per-day and 14% were walking 60
minutes per day. 30.4% of them had consanguineous parents. Breast feeding was practiced among 67.7% of women and
over 73% were considered overweight and obese. Furthermore, over 75% of breast cancer women were at the Stage 3
(40.9%) and Stage 4 (35.8%) of cancer. The percentage of patients who underwent mastectomy and lumpectomy were
49.3 % and 50.7%, respectively. It was observed that 27.7% of BDI patients had moderate depression and 19.5% of
the BDI patients had severe depression and with mean and standard deviation 25.1±7.7. Also, the mean and SD of BDI
for consanguineous has showed statistically significant 28.4±5.7 than non- consanguineous 23.2± 8.0 (p<0.001). All
socio-demographic variables showed statistically significant differences with the total BHS score. The highest score
belongs to the family sub-dimension. Conclusion: The present study indicates that hopelessness of the patients with
breast cancer decreased with the increase in their social support. Therefore, activating patient social support systems is
of importance in increasing their levels of hope. The present study revealed the coexistence of the socio-demographic,
physical, psychological, and cognitive problems faced by patients with cancer.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of consanguinity on risk for mental disorders especially in primary health care-PHC settings. It was decided to ascertain prevalence of common mental disorders and consanguinity. We set out to study the burden of commonest psychiatric disorders among consanguineous marriages at PHC using the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI) and examine their symptom patterns and co-morbidity in Qatar. A prospective cross sectional study was carried out over a year between November 2011 to October 2012. A total of 2.000 Qatari subjects aged 18 to 65 years were approached; 1.475 (73.3%) gave consent and participated in this study. Prevalence of psychiatric disorders using the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI, version 3.0) showed that six most common disorders were major depression disorders (18.3%), any impulse control condition (18.3%), any anxiety disorders (17.2%), any mood disorders (16.9%), followed by separation anxiety disorders (15.2%), personality disorder (14.1%). The mean age ± SD of the 1.475 subjects interviewed was 39.3 ± 9.8 years. The rate of consanguinity in the present generation was 31.5% [95% CI = 29.1–33.7]. There were statistically significant differences between consanguineous and non-consanguineous with regards to age, educational status, occupation status, household income as well as BMI, cigarette smoking and sheesha smoking. One-fifth of all adults who attended the PHC center 20% had at least one psychiatric diagnosis. The prevalence of the generalized anxiety disorders; social phobia, specific phobia, major depression, and personality disorders were significantly higher in consanguineous marriages than in non-consanguineous.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
AimThe objectıve was to determine correlation between depression, anxiety and stress in menopausal and post-menopausal women and shedding more light on a complex relationship.MethodsA cross-sectional based on Arabian women at the Primary Health Care (PHC) Centers in Qatar during July 2012 and May 2014 and 1101 women agreed to participate and responded to the study. Depression, anxiety and stress were measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21). Data on body mass index (BMI), clinical and other parameters were used.ResultsThe mean age and SD of the menopausal age was 49.55 ± 3.12, and postmenopausal age was 58.08 ± 3.26 (P < 0.001). There were statistically significant differences between menopausal stages with regards to age, ethnicity, educational status, occupation status, and place of living. Also, there were statistically significant differences between menopausal stages with regards to BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, vitamin D deficiency, and diseases. Depression and anxiety were more common among postmenopause women. The multivariate regression analyses revealed that age in years, diastolic BP, consanguinity, regular exercise were predictor for depression. Meanwhile, diastolic BP, occupation and physical activity considered the main risk factors for anxiety. Furthermore, age in years, occupation and sheesha smoking habits were considered as the main risk factors associated with stress.ConclusionA large number of factors were associated with experiencing menopausal and psychosocial problems and which had negative effects on the quality of life among Arabian women. Abstract
Background: The Gail model is the most widely used breast cancer risk assessment tool. An accurate assessment of individual’s breast cancer risk is very important for prevention of the disease and for the health care providers to make decision on taking chemoprevention for high-risk women in clinical practice in Qatar. Aim: To assess the breast cancer risk among Arab women population in Qatar using the Gail model and provide a global comparison of risk assessment. Subjects and Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 1488 women (aged 35 years and older), we used the Gail Risk Assessment Tool to assess the risk of developing breast cancer. Sociodemographic features such as age, lifestyle habits, body mass index, breast-feeding duration, consanguinity among parents, and family history of breast cancer were considered as possible risks. Results: The mean age of the study population was 47.8 ± 10.8 years. Qatari women and Arab women constituted 64.7% and 35.3% of the study population, respectively. The mean 5-year and lifetime breast cancer risks were 1.12 ± 0.52 and 10.57 ± 3.1, respectively. Consanguineous marriage among parents was seen in 30.6% of participants. We found a relationship between the 5-year and lifetime risks of breast cancer and variables such as age, age at menarche, gravidity, parity, body mass index, family history of cancer, menopause age, occupation, and level of education. The linear regression analysis identified the predictors for breast cancer in women such as age, age at menarche, age of first birth, family history and age of menopausal were considered the strong predictors and significant contributing risk factors for breast cancer after adjusting for ethnicity, parity and other variables. Conclusion: The current study is the first to evaluate the performance of the Gail model for Arab women population in the Gulf Cooperation Council. Gail model is an appropriate breast cancer risk assessment tool for female population in Qatar.

Abstract
Introduction Breast cancer has been the most common cancer type that affects women worldwide and subsequent treatment is often associated with considerable psychological and quality of life (QoL). Aim This study aimed to assess psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) general QoL questionnaire (QLQ-C30) for breast cancer patients in Qatar. Materials and Methods This is a cross-sectional hospital-based study conducted on 678 breast cancer patients using Arabic version of the EORTC QLQ-C30 tool. Results The mean age of women was 47.7 ± 10.2 years and 33.4% of women had consanguineous parents. Six subscales out of the nine met the standards of reliability with coefficients ranging from 0.55 to 0.89. The mean score of all functioning scales was high >55. Advanced breast cancer stages of III-IV had higher symptomatic scores significantly than those in early stages for the physical function, cognitive, fatigue, insomnia, appetite loss, constipation, and financial difficulties. Correlation coefficients between each item ranged from -0.113 to 0.960, and item 21 (tense) and item 23 (irritable) had strongest negative correlations with their corresponding emotional functioning subscale, whereas items 29 (physical condition) and 30 (overall QoL) had the strongest positive correlation with Global Health/QoL subscale. Item 6 (limited work) showed a higher correlation with fatigue (r = 0.749). Likewise, item 19 (pain interfered with daily activities) of the pain subscale had higher correlations with physical functioning, role functioning, and fatigue subscales. Conclusion Qatari Arabic version of the EORTC QLQ-C30 showed acceptable psychometric properties, which is a reliable and valid instrument, that can be used by oncologists.

Abstract
Background: To determine the mean and median delays in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) diagnosis among adults in one of the world's highest gross domestic product per capita countries and identify patient and health system-related reasons for these delays. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, face-to-face, prospective study of 100 subjects with confirmed PTB, conducted at main tuberculosis (TB) admitting facilities in Qatar. The mean and median diagnostic delays were measured. The Chi-square test with two-sided P < 0.05 was considered to determine the association between factors and diagnostic delay. Results: The mean and median total diagnostic delays of PTB were 53 (95% confidence interval [CI] 42.61–63.59) and 30 (interquartile range; Q1–Q3, 15–60) days, respectively. The mean patient factor delay was 45.7 (95% CI 28.1–63.4) days, and the median was 30 (interquartile range; Q1–Q3, 15–60) days. The mean health system factor delay was 46.3 (95% CI 35.46–57.06) days, and the median was 30 (interquartile range; Q1–Q3, 18–60) days. The most common cause of patient factor delay was neglect of TB symptoms by patients (in 39% of cases), and for health-care system factor delay was a failure (mostly at general and private care levels) to suspect PTB by doctors (in 57% of cases). There were no significant associations between the presence of language barrier, patient occupation or nationality, and diagnostic delay. Conclusions: Despite a favorable comparison to other countries, there is a substantial delay in the diagnosis of PTB in Qatar. Relevant actions including health education on TB are required to minimize this delay.

Abstract
AIM The aims of this study were to determine the role of vitamin D, obesity and physical exercise in the regulation of glycemia in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients in a highly consanguineous population. DESIGN Case and control study. SETTING The survey was carried out at the Hamad General Hospital and Primary Health Care (PHC) centers in the State of Qatar. SUBJECTS The study was conducted from November 2012 to June 2014 among subjects above 30 years of age. Of the 2224 registered with diagnosed diabetes and free diseases attending Hamad General Hospital and PHC centers agreed and gave their consent to study. METHODS Questionnaire included socio-demographic variables, body mass index (BMI), consanguinity, lifestyle habits, family history of diabetes, blood pressure and development of diabetes complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy were collected at regular intervals throughout the follow-up. Univariate and multivariate statistical analysis were performed. RESULTS There were statistically significant difference between patients with diabetic and control in terms of ethnicity (p=0.012), level of education (p=0.002), occupation (p<0.001), monthly income (p<0.001), BMI(p=0.024), sport activity (p=0.018), cigarette smoking (p<0.001), consanguinity (p=0.029) and family history of Diabetes Mellitus (p<0.001) and co-morbidity hypertension (p=0.041). Further, the biochemistry values in the studied subjects with T2DM compared to healthy controls and the study revealed that serum Vitamin D, BMI, fasting glucose level, calcium, HbA1c, total cholesterol HDL, LDL, bilirubin, triglycerides, uric acid and blood pressure systolic and diastolic were higher in T2DM compared to their counterparts. Multivariate logistic regression showed that vitamin D deficiency ng/mL, Family History of T2DM, BMI (kg/m2) hypertension, consanguinity, income, mother occupation, ethnicity, educational level and Lack of physical exercise variables were significant predictors of diabetes. In the group of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients, 39.3% as opposed to 51.2% in the control group had vitamin D deficiency, 25(OH) D3 levels≤10ng/ml (p<0.001). In the group of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients, 34.6% as opposed to 37.9% in the control group had vitamin D insufficiency, 25(OH)D3 levels <20ng/ml (p < 0.001). In the group of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients, 22.8% as opposed to 14.2% in the control group had vitamin D sufficiency, 25(OH)D3 levels >30 10ng/ml (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Vitamin D, family history of diabetes, consanguinity marriages' and hereditary gene-environment interactions and physical exercise may also contribute to the current diabetes epidemic in Qatari's Arab populations.

Abstract
Background: The effects of shift work on coronary heart diseases (CHD) are well described. Most of the studies on coronary events in shift workers are supportive of the hypothesis that they are at increased risk. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the relation shift work has to risk of CHD in a cohort of men from different Asian races working in a fertilizer plant in the Middle East. Design: This is a case series of cohort study. Subjects: The medical records for 2562 staff employed at the plant, from the start of the company in 1972 till 2003, were surveyed. Of these, 648 were shift workers and 1914 were daytime workers. A total of 223 employees had cardiovascular event. Methods: For each case we recorded the date and age at start of employment, and the age at the time of diagnosis. Data from their last medical examination in the company were used to calculate their BMI, and to register whether they were smokers, had diabetes, or were senior or intermediate staff. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed. Results: The incidence of CHD is significantly higher in shift workers (13.5%) compared with the daytime workers (7.1%). Also, there was a statistically significant difference between shift workers and daytime workers concerning hypertension and cerebrovascular incidents. Conclusion: Our results suggest the possibility of an overall relationship between shift work and cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Purpose: To establish and test the clinical efficacy of a new diagnostic algorithm with the extensive utilization of modified carpal box radiography (mX-CB) in the detection of scaphoid fractures. Material and Methods: Initial and early follow-up radiographic evaluation of 146 suspected scaphoid fractures were carried out by mX-CB. Patients with unconfirmed diagnosis were referred to CT. Patients were followed for 1 year after injury. Sensitivity, specificity and interobserver agreement of reading mX-CB images were determined statistically. Results: No non-union or avascular necrosis was seen at 1 year after the injury. 90% of the fractures were diagnosed by mX-CB, only 6.8% of the patients needed referral to CT. Sensitivity of mX-CB at initial presentation was 81.6%. Interobserver agreement was very high among evaluators of mX-CB images. Conclusion: Extensive utilization of mX-CB as primary and early follow-up investigation resulted in high initial diagnostic accuracy and low referral rate to a more expensive diagnostic modality.

Abstract
This study reports on findings of a survey of smoking behavior and attitudes of approximately 1500 public secondary school boys in three major cities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), one of the most rapidly developing societies in the world. Using an adaptation of the World Health Organizations Smoking Questionnaire and a multi-stage cluster sample of public schools and classes, the survey determined that 18.9 percent were current smokers and another 28.2 percent had smoking experience but were not active at the time of the study. The majority of smokers were not UAE nationals and had begun smoking between the ages of ten to fifteen. Almost 60 percent of current smokers reported modest consumption of one to six cigarettes daily and nearly two-thirds reported a desire to stop their smoking. Smokers also were much more likely to come from families in which other family members smoked. Implications of findings for prevention programs point to a broad public and school-based effort for the UAE.

Abstract
Background: The association between depression and loss of bone mineral density (BMD) has been reported as controversial. Objective: The objectıve of the current study was to investigate whether an association exists between depression and low BMD during the menopausal and postmenopausal period. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was used to generate menopause symptoms experienced by Arabian women at the Primary Health Care Centers in Qatar. A multi-stage sampling design was used, and a representative sample of 1650 women aged 45–65 years were included during July 2012 and November 2013. This prospective study explored the association between bone density and major depressive disorder in women. Bone mineral densitometry measurements (BMD) (g/m2) were assessed at the BMD unit using a lunar prodigy DXA system (Lunar Corp., Madison, WI). Data on body mass index (BMI), clinical biochemistry variables including serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D were collected. The Beck Depression Inventory was administered for depression purposes. Results: Out of 1650 women 1182 women agreed to participate in the study (71.6%). The mean age and standard deviation (SD) of the menopausal age were 48.71 ± 2.96 with depressed and 50.20 ± 3.22 without depressed (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the mean and SD of postmenopausal age were 58.55 ± 3.27 with depression and 57.78 ± 3.20 without depression (P < 0.001). There were statistically significant differences between menopausal stages with regards to a number of parity, and place of living. There were statistically significant differences between menopausal stages with regards to BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, Vitamin D deficiency, calcium deficiency and shisha smoking habits. Overall, osteopenia and osteoporosis and bone loss were significantly lower in postmenopausal women than in menopausal women (P < 0.001). Similarly, T-score and Z-score were lower with depression menopause and postmenopausal women (P < 0.001). The multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that the depression, the mean serum Vitamin D deficiency, calcium level deficiency, less physical activity, comorbidity, number of parity, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and shisha smoking habits were considered as the main risk factors associated with bone mineral loss after adjusting for age, BMI and other variables. Conclusion: Depression is associated with low BMD with a substantially greater BMD decrease in depressed women and cases of clinical depression. Depression should be considered as an important risk factor for osteoporosis.

Abstract
ObjectiveMost children experience some degree of fear during their development. Excessive fears can create serious obstacles to children. The aim of this study was to identify the most common fears in a sample of children and adolescents and examine the socio-demographic correlates of fears.Subjects and methodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted during the period July 2010 to February 2012 at Public and Private Schools of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, in Qatar. Out of 2188 students approached, 1703 students agreed to participate in this study, with a response rate of 77.8%. The questionnaire includes socio-demographic information, academic performance, behaviour at home and various fears.ResultsMore than half of the children experienced fears (56.7%). Most of them were in the intermediate level, 12–15 years old (46.1%). Overall, reported fears were significantly more frequent in girls (62.6%) than boys (37.4%) (P < 0.001). A significant difference was observed between girls and boys who experienced fears in their age group (P < 0.001), education of mother (P = 0.04), household income (P = 0.008) and academic performance (P < 0.001). The most frequent reported fears were fear of someone dying in the family (85.2%), parents getting divorced (84.5%), breaking religious law (82%), being kidnapped (78.2%), family members ill (78%) and dying (76.7%).ConclusionsThe study findings revealed that fears were highly prevalent in Arab children and adolescents in Qatar. Girls reported more fears than boys.
