A critical review of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems: Degradation mechanisms and removing strategies

Plastic waste discarded into aquatic environments gradually degrades into smaller fragments, known as microplastics (MPs), which range in size from 0.05 to 5 mm. The ubiquity of MPs poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and, by extension, human health, as these particles are ingested by various marine organisms including zooplankton, crustaceans, and fish, eventually entering the human food chain. This contamination threatens the entire ecological balance, encompassing food safety and the health of aquatic systems. Consequently, developing effective MP removal technologies has emerged as a critical area of research. Here, we summarize the mechanisms and recently reported strategies for removing MPs from aquatic ecosystems. Strategies combining physical and chemical pretreatments with microbial degradation have shown promise in decomposing MPs. Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, algae, and specific enzymes are being leveraged in MP remediation efforts. Recent advancements have focused on innovative methods such as membrane bioreactors, synthetic biology, organosilane-based techniques, biofilm-mediated remediation, and nanomaterial-enabled strategies, with nano-enabled technologies demonstrating substantial potential to enhance MP removal efficiency. This review aims to stimulate further innovation in effective MP removal methods, promoting environmental and social well-being.

Inferior Frontal Sulcal Hyperintensity on Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery Is Related to Cerebrospinal Fluid Clearance via Putative Meningeal Lymphatics

Inferior frontal sulcal hyperintensity (IFSH) on FLAIR sequence may indicate elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) wastes. The objective of this study was to investigate its association with the clearance function of putative meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs). We included patients who underwent FLAIR sequence and dynamic contrast MRI with intrathecal administration of contrast agent. The visibility of IFSH was quantitatively assessed by measuring the mean signal intensity of inferior frontal sulci on 2D FLAIR. The clearance function of putative mLVs was defined as the percentage change of signal unite ratio in the parasagittal dura from baseline to 4.5, 15 and 39 hours after intrathecal injection on dynamic contrast MRI. Additionally, imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease, including white matter hyperintensities and enlarged perivascular spaces, were measured. Correlation analysis and linear regression were employed to verify the association of IFSH with the clearance function of mLVs. A total of 76 patients were included in the study. The visibility of IFSH was found to be associated with the percentage change of signal unite ratio in parasagittal dura from baseline to 15 and 39 hours in adjusted analyses. Furthermore, the visibility of IFSH was positively related to the age, scores of both periventricular and deep white matter hyperintensities, and the grade of enlarged perivascular spaces in centrum semiovale. These findings suggest that the visibility of IFSH on 2D FLAIR may serve as an indicator of clearance dysfunction of mLVs and may be implicated in the development of cerebral small vessel disease.

A review of quantification methods for light absorption enhancement of black carbon aerosol

Black carbon (BC) is a distinct type of carbonaceous aerosol that has a significant impact on the environment, human health, and climate. A non-BC material coating on BC can alter the mixing state of the BC particles, which considerably enhances the mass absorption efficiency of BC by directing more energy toward the BC cores (lensing effect). A lot of methods have been reported for quantifying the enhancement factor (Eabs), with diverse results. However, to the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive review specific to the quantification methods for Eabs has not been systematically performed, which is unfavorable for the evaluation of obtained results and subsequent radiative forcing. In this review, quantification methods are divided into two broad categories, direct and indirect, depending on whether experimental removal of the coating layer from an aged carbonaceous particle is required. The direct methods described include thermal peeling, solvent dissolution, and optical virtual exfoliation, while the indirect methods include intercept-linear regression fitting, minimum R squared, numerical simulation, and empirical value. We summarized the principles, procedures, virtues, and limitations of the major Eabs quantification methods and analyzed the current problems in the determination of Eabs. We pointed out what breakthroughs are needed to improve or innovate Eabs quantification methods, particularly regarding the need to avoid the influence of brown carbon, develop a broadband Eabs quantification scheme, quantify the Eabs values for the emissions of low-efficiency combustions, measure the Eabs of particles in a high-humidity environment, design a real-time monitor of Eabs by a proper combination of mature techniques, and make more use of artificial intelligence for better Eabs quantification. This review deepens the understanding of Eabs quantification methods and benefits the estimation of the contribution of BC to radiative forcing using climate models.

Lignin Degradation by Klebsiella aerogenes TL3 under Anaerobic Conditions

Lignin, the largest non-carbohydrate component of lignocellulosic biomass, is also a recalcitrant component of the plant cell wall. While the aerobic degradation mechanism of lignin has been well-documented, the anaerobic degradation mechanism is still largely elusive. In this work, a versatile facultative anaerobic lignin-degrading bacterium, Klebsiella aerogenes TL3, was isolated from a termite gut, and was found to metabolize a variety of carbon sources and produce a single kind or multiple kinds of acids. The percent degradation of alkali lignin reached 14.8% under anaerobic conditions, and could reach 17.4% in the presence of glucose within 72 h. Based on the results of infrared spectroscopy and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, it can be inferred that the anaerobic degradation of lignin may undergo the cleavage of the C-O bond (β-O-4), as well as the C-C bond (β-5 and β-β), and involve the oxidation of the side chain, demethylation, and the destruction of the aromatic ring skeleton. Although the anaerobic degradation of lignin by TL3 was slightly weaker than that under aerobic conditions, it could be further enhanced by adding glucose as an electron donor. These results may shed new light on the mechanisms of anaerobic lignin degradation.

Harnessing recalcitrant lignocellulosic biomass for enhanced biohydrogen production: Recent advances, challenges, and future perspective

Biohydrogen (Bio-H2) is widely recognized as a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source, devoid of any detrimental impact on the environment. Lignocellulosic biomass (LB) is a readily accessible and plentiful source material that can be effectively employed as a cost-effective and sustainable substrate for Bio-H2 production. Despite the numerous challenges, the ongoing progress in LB pretreatment technology, microbial fermentation, and the integration of molecular biology techniques have the potential to enhance Bio-H2 productivity and yield. Consequently, this technology exhibits efficiency and the capacity to meet the future energy demands associated with the valorization of recalcitrant biomass. To date, several pretreatment approaches have been investigated in order to improve the digestibility of feedstock. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of comprehensive systematic studies examining the effectiveness of pretreatment methods in enhancing Bio-H2 production through dark fermentation. Additionally, there is a dearth of economic feasibility evaluations pertaining to this area of research. Thus, this review has conducted comparative studies on the technological and economic viability of current pretreatment methods. It has also examined the potential of these pretreatments in terms of carbon neutrality and circular economy principles. This review paves the way for a new opportunity to enhance Bio-H2 production with technological approaches.

Exploring the potential of selective oxidation in bioconjugation of collagen with xyloglucan carboxylates

Xyloglucan (XG), as a natural biopolymer, possesses a sound biocompatibility and an impressive biodegradability, which are usually featured with abundant hydroxyl groups available for the bioconjugation with a bioactive moiety, suggesting a promising or unique value possibly applied in the field of biomedicine. In this study, XG was extracted from Tamarind seeds and subjected to four regioselective oxidation methods to introduce carboxyl groups onto the XG molecules for a bioconjugation with collagen. Galactose oxidase and reducing end aldehyde group oxidation mainly resulted in a low carboxylate content at ∼0.34 mmol/g, whereas the primary and secondary hydroxyl group oxidations would lead to a high carboxyl content at ∼0.84 mmol/g. The number-average molar mass (Mn) and weight-average molar mass (Mw) of XG were 8.8 × 105 g/mol and 1.1 × 106 g/mol, respectively. The oxidized XGs were then subjected to a further biofunctionalization with the collagen through EDC/NHS coupling, which exhibited a degree of conjugation rate, ranged from 50 % to 72 %. The collagen-conjugated at the C6 position of XGs exhibited the highest cell viability recorded at 168 % in promoting cell growth and proliferation after 72 h of culture, surpassing that of pure collagen recorded at 138 %, which may indeed suggest a promising value in a biomedical application.

Recurrent patellar dislocation patients with high-grade J-sign have multiple structural bone abnormalities in the lower limbs

PURPOSE

To explore the relationship between preoperative J-sign grading and structural bone abnormalities in patients with recurrent patellar dislocation (RPD).

METHODS

A retrospective study was conducted on RPD patients over 5 years. Patients were categorised based on J-sign grade into low (J- and J1+), moderate (J2+) and high groups (J3+). Trochlear dysplasia (TD) and osseous structures (femoral anteversion angle [FAA], knee torsion, tibial tuberosity-trochlear groove [TT-TG] distance, Caton-Deschamps index) were assessed and grouped according to risk factor thresholds. The χ2 test was used to compare composition ratio differences of structural bone abnormalities among the groups.

RESULTS

A total of 256 patients were included, with 206 (80.5%) females. The distribution of J-sign grade was as follows: 89 knees (34.8%) of low grade, 86 moderate (33.6%) and 81 high (31.6%). Among the five structural bone abnormalities, TD was the most common with a prevalence of 78.5%, followed by increased TT-TG at 47.4%. Excessive tibiofemoral rotation had the lowest occurrence at 28.9%. There were 173 (67.6%) patients who had two or more abnormalities, while 45 (17.6%) had four to five bony abnormalities. Among patients with any bony abnormality, the proportion of high-grade J-sign surpassed 40%. Patients with moderate and high-grade J-sign had more increased FAA and more pronounced patella alta (all p < 0.001). The proportion of excessive knee torsion and TD increased with increasing each J-sign grade, with the more notable tendency in knee torsion (high vs. moderate vs. low-grade: 61% vs. 22% vs 7%, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the higher J-sign grade was also associated with more combined bony abnormalities (p < 0.001). In the high-grade J-sign group, 90.2% of the knees had two or more bony risk factors and 40.7% had four or more, which were significantly higher than the moderate and low-grade J-sign groups (40.7% vs. 11.6% vs. 2.2%, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

In patients with a high-grade J-sign, over 90% of the lower limbs had two or more structural bone risk factors, and more than 40% had four or more. These proportions were significantly higher compared to knees with low-grade and moderate J-sign. In clinical practice, when treating high-grade patellar mal-tracking, it is important to focus on and correct these strongly correlated abnormal bone structures.

Modulating the pH profile of vanillin dehydrogenase enzyme from extremophile Bacillus ligniniphilus L1 through computational guided site-directed mutagenesis

Vanillin dehydrogenase (VDH) has recently come forward as an important enzyme for the commercial production of vanillic acid from vanillin in a one-step enzymatic process. However, VDH with high alkaline tolerance and efficiency is desirable to meet the biorefinery requirements. In this study, computationally guided site-directed mutagenesis was performed by increasing the positive and negative charges on the surface and near the active site of the VDH from the alkaliphilic marine bacterium Bacillus ligniniphilus L1, respectively. In total, 20 residues including 15 from surface amino acids and 5 near active sites were selected based on computational analysis and were subjected to site-directed mutations. The optimum pH of the two screened mutants including I132R, and T235E from surface residue and near active site mutant was shifted to 9, and 8.6, with a 2.82- and 2.95-fold increase in their activity compared to wild enzyme at pH 9, respectively. A double mutant containing both these mutations i.e., I132R/T235E was produced which showed a shift in optimum pH of VDH from 7.4 to 9, with an increase of 74.91 % in enzyme activity. Therefore, the double mutant of VDH from the L1 strain (I132R/T235E) produced in this study represents a potential candidate for industrial applications.

Potential applications of extremophilic bacteria in the bioremediation of extreme environments contaminated with heavy metals

Protecting the environment from harmful pollutants has become increasingly difficult in recent decades. The presence of heavy metal (HM) pollution poses a serious environmental hazard that requires intricate attention on a worldwide scale. Even at low concentrations, HMs have the potential to induce deleterious health effects in both humans and other living organisms. Therefore, various strategies have been proposed to address this issue, with extremophiles being a promising solution. Bacteria that exhibit resistance to metals are preferred for applications involving metal removal due to their capacity for rapid multiplication and growth. Extremophiles are a special group of microorganisms that are capable of surviving under extreme conditions such as extreme temperatures, pH levels, and high salt concentrations where other organisms cannot. Due to their unique enzymes and adaptive capabilities, extremophiles are well suited as catalysts for environmental biotechnology applications, including the bioremediation of HMs through various strategies. The mechanisms of resistance to HMs by extremophilic bacteria encompass: (i) metal exclusion by permeability barrier; (ii) extracellular metal sequestration by protein/chelator binding; (iii) intracellular sequestration of the metal by protein/chelator binding; (iv) enzymatic detoxification of a metal to a less toxic form; (v) active transport of HMs; (vi) passive tolerance; (vii) reduced metal sensitivity of cellular targets to metal ions; and (viii) morphological change of cells. This review provides comprehensive information on extremophilic bacteria and their potential roles for bioremediation, particularly in environments contaminated with HMs, which pose a threat due to their stability and persistence. Genetic engineering of extremophilic bacteria in stressed environments could help in the bioremediation of contaminated sites. Due to their unique characteristics, these organisms and their enzymes are expected to bridge the gap between biological and chemical industrial processes. However, the structure and biochemical properties of extremophilic bacteria, along with any possible long-term effects of their applications, need to be investigated further.

An Investigation of Cerebral Vascular Functional Properties in Middle-to-Old Age Community People With High Vascular Risk Profiles

BACKGROUND

Vascular degeneration is an important cause of brain damage in aging. Assessing the functional properties of the cerebral vascular system may aid early diagnosis and prevention.

To investigate the relationships between potential vascular functional markers and vascular risks, brain parenchymal damage, and cognition.

ASSESSMENT

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) in gray matter calculated using pCASL, blood transit times calculated using rsfMRI, and the SD of internal carotid arteries signal (ICAstd ) calculated using rsfMRI; visual assessment for lacunes; quantification of white matter hyperintensity volume; permutation test for quality control; collection of demographic and clinical data, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Mini-Mental State Examination.

STATISTICAL TESTS

Kolmogorov-Smirnov test; Spearman rank correlation analysis; Multivariable linear regression analysis controlling for covariates; The level of statistical significance was set at P < 0.05.

RESULTS

Age was negatively associated with ICAstd (β = -0.180). Diabetes was associated with longer blood transit time from large arteries to capillary bed (β = 0.185, adjusted for age, sex, and intracranial volume). Larger ICAstd was associated with less presence of lacunes (odds ratio: 0.418, adjusted for age and sex). Higher gray matter CBF (β = 0.154) and larger ICAstd (β = 0.136) were associated with better MoCA scores (adjusted for age, sex, and education).

DATA CONCLUSION

Prolonged blood transit time, decreased ICAstd , and diminished CBF were associated with vascular dysfunction and cognitive impairment. They may serve as vascular functional markers in future studies.

The Role of CCTA-derived Cardiac Structure and Function Analysis in the Prediction of Readmission in Nonischemic Heart Failure

Cardiac function and structure significantly impact nonischemic heart failure (HF) patient outcomes. This study investigated 236 patients (107 nonischemic heart failure, 129 healthy) to assess the relationship between coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA)-derived parameters and clinical outcomes. Among the nonischemic heart failure patients, 37.3% experienced readmissions. In this group, specific CCTA measurements were identified as significant predictors of readmission: epicardial adipose tissue (CTEAT) at 54.49 cm3 (HR: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.03-1.07; P < 0.001), cardiac muscle mass to lumen volume (CTV/M) at 20% (HR: 0.59; 95% CI: 0.48-0.72; P < 0.001), peri-coronary adipose (CTPCAT) at -64.68 HU (HR: 1.1; 95% CI: 1.03-1.16; P = 0.002) for the right coronary artery, -81.07 HU (HR: 1.3; 95% CI: 1.1-1.53; P = 0.002) for the left anterior descending artery, and -73.42 HU (HR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.18-1.51; P < 0.001) for the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery. In patients with nonischemic heart failure, increased CTEAT, CTPCAT, and CTV/M independently predicted rehospitalization.

A critical review on plastic waste life cycle assessment and management: Challenges, research gaps, and future perspectives

The global production and consumption of plastics, as well as their deposition in the environment, are experiencing exponential growth. In addition, mismanaged plastic waste (PW) losses into drainage channels are a growing source of microplastic (MP) pollution concern. However, the complete understanding of their environmental implications throughout their life cycle is yet to be fully understood. Determining the potential extent to which MPs contribute to overall ecotoxicity is possible through the monitoring of PW release and MP removal during remediation. Life cycle assessments (LCAs) have been extensively utilized in many comparative analyses, such as comparing petroleum-based plastics with biomass and single-use plastics with multi-use alternatives. These assessments typically yield unexpected or paradoxical results. Nevertheless, there is still a paucity of reliable data and tools for conducting LCAs on plastics. On the other hand, the release and impact of MP have so far not been considered in LCA studies. This is due to the absence of inventory-related data regarding MP releases and the characterization factors necessary to quantify the effects of MP. Therefore, this review paper conducts a comprehensive literature review in order to assess the current state of knowledge and data regarding the environmental impacts that occur throughout the life cycle of plastics, along with strategies for plastic management through LCA.

Natural deep eutectic solvents-based green extraction of vanillin: optimization, purification, and bioactivity assessment

The sustainable extraction of natural compounds has recently attracted significant attention. The extraction of high-quality natural vanillin in active form is crucial for its efficient use in various industries, but conventional solvents are not suitable for this purpose. The flammability, volatility, and toxicity of organic solvents can harm extraction personnel, and their waste liquid can cause environmental pollution. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and non-toxic organic alternative to conventional solvents. In this study, 20 different NADES were tested for the sustainable extraction of natural vanillin. Among these, a DES system composed of choline chloride: 1,4-butanediol: lactic acid exhibited the highest extraction rate (15.9 mg/g). Employing response surface methodology (RSM), optimal extraction conditions were determined, yielding a vanillin content 18.5 mg/g with water content of 33.9%, extraction temperature of 64.6°C, extraction time of 32.3 min, and a solid-liquid ratio of 44.9 mg/mL. Subsequently, the optimized NADES system was then assessed for reusability in extracting vanillin from vanilla pods and kraft lignin over three cycles, retaining 43% of its extraction efficiency and demonstrating potential for waste reduction. Purification of vanillin was achieved through chromatography using a non-polar resin SP700, with ethanol as a desorption eluent and a feed solution pH of 4.0, resulting in the highest vanillin purity. HPLC and GC-MS analyses confirmed purity, while antioxidant activity assays (DPPH and ABTS) showcased significant antioxidant activity of the purified vanillin. Moreover, vanillin exhibited notable antimicrobial activity against a panel of food-borne bacteria. This study introduces an environmentally friendly approach to vanillin extraction highlights using NADES, emphasizing the potential for producing high-quality bioactive vanillin with reduced environmental impact. The applicability of NADES systems extends beyond vanillin, offering a versatile method for extracting diverse natural compounds.

Recent advances in sustainable hydrogen production from microalgae: Mechanisms, challenges, and future perspectives

The depletion of fossil fuel reserves has resulted from their application in the industrial and energy sectors. As a result, substantial efforts have been dedicated to fostering the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources via technological advancements in industrial processes. Microalgae can be used to produce biofuels such as biodiesel, hydrogen, and bioethanol. Microalgae are particularly suitable for hydrogen production due to their rapid growth rate, ability to thrive in diverse habitats, ability to resolve conflicts between fuel and food production, and capacity to capture and utilize atmospheric carbon dioxide. Therefore, microalgae-based biohydrogen production has attracted significant attention as a clean and sustainable fuel to achieve carbon neutrality and sustainability in nature. To this end, the review paper emphasizes recent information related to microalgae-based biohydrogen production, mechanisms of sustainable hydrogen production, factors affecting biohydrogen production by microalgae, bioreactor design and hydrogen production, advanced strategies to improve efficiency of biohydrogen production by microalgae, along with bottlenecks and perspectives to overcome the challenges. This review aims to collate advances and new knowledge emerged in recent years for microalgae-based biohydrogen production and promote the adoption of biohydrogen as an alternative to conventional hydrocarbon biofuels, thereby expediting the carbon neutrality target that is most advantageous to the environment.

Structure-activity relationships of bioactive polysaccharides extracted from macroalgae towards biomedical application: A review

Macroalgae are valuable and structurally diverse sources of bioactive compounds among marine resources. The cell walls of macroalgae are rich in polysaccharides which exhibit a wide range of biological activities, such as anticoagulant, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antitumor activities. Macroalgae polysaccharides (MPs) have been recognized as one of the most promising candidates in the biomedical field. However, the structure-activity relationships of bioactive polysaccharides extracted from macroalgae are complex and influenced by various factors. A clear understanding of these relationships is indeed critical in developing effective biomedical applications with MPs. In line with these challenges and knowledge gaps, this paper summarized the structural characteristics of marine MPs from different sources and relevant functional and bioactive properties and particularly highlighted those essential effects of the structure-bioactivity relationships presented in biomedical applications. This review not only focused on elucidating a particular action mechanism of MPs, but also intended to identify a novel or potential application of these valued compounds in the biomedical field in terms of their structural characteristics. In the last, the challenges and prospects of MPs in structure-bioactivity elucidation were further discussed and predicted, where they were emphasized on exploring modern biotechnology approaches potentially applied to expand their promising biomedical applications.

Derotational distal femoral osteotomy improves subjective function and patellar tracking after medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction in recurrent patellar dislocation patients with increased femoral anteversion: A systematic review and meta-analysis

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to systematically review and quantitatively analyse the clinical outcomes of combined derotational distal femoral osteotomy (D-DFO) and medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFL-R) in the treatment of recurrent patellar dislocation (RPD) with increased femoral anteversion angle (FAA).

METHODS

This study was performed in line with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and AMSTAR (Assessing the Methodological Quality Of Systematic Reviews) Guidelines. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were searched to identify studies reporting clinical outcomes of combined D-DFO and MPFL-R in RPD patients with increased FAA. Data on patient-reported outcome measures, radiological parameters, patellar tracking as revealed by J-sign and complications were extracted based on the inclusion criteria. The Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Study score was used for quality assessment. Review Manager and R statistical software were used to perform the statistical analysis.

RESULTS

Eleven studies with a total of 569 knees in 553 patients were included. Patients were predominantly female (79%). The weighted mean of FAA decreased from 33.6° to 13.0° (weighted mean difference = 20.59; p < 0.00001) after the combined procedure. Significant improvements (p < 0.00001) were identified in the Lysholm score (weighted mean: 55.5 vs. 80.4), International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score (weighted mean: 52.8 vs. 78.6) and Kujala score (weighted mean: 54.5 vs. 80.6). The incidence of residual J-sign ranged from 14.3% to 38.3% with an overall pooled rate of 28.2% (95% confidence interval = 22.8%-33.6%). The overall redislocation rate was 1.1%. No patients experienced surgical site infection or bone nonunion. Two studies compared the clinical outcomes of MPFL-R with and without D-DFO. Compared with isolated MPFL-R, the combined procedure yielded a better Lysholm score (weighted mean: 84.9 vs. 79.3, p < 0.0001), IKDC score (weighted mean: 84.1 vs. 79.9, p = 0.001), Kujala score (weighted mean: 84.3 vs. 79.4, p < 0.0001) and a lower residual J-sign rate (26/97 [26.8%] vs. 44/105 [41.9%], p = 0.02), respectively.

CONCLUSION

The combination of D-DFO and MPFL-R led to improved clinical outcomes and a low redislocation rate in patients with RPD and increased FAA. Additional D-DFO can achieve more favourable results in subjective function and patellar tracking than isolated MPFL-R in the setting of excessive FAA.

The Drainage Dysfunction of Meningeal Lymphatic Vessels Is Correlated with the Recurrence of Chronic Subdural Hematoma: a Prospective Study

Meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) were recently discovered to be involved in the waste drainage process in the brain, which has also been associated with a variety of neurological diseases. This research paper hypothesizes that the drainage function of mLVs may be affected after chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) and the alterations of mLVs' drainage may predict CSDH recurrence. In this prospective observational study, unenhanced 3D T2-fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D T2-FLAIR) MRI data were collected from CSDH patients and healthy participants for analysis. Patients with CSDH who underwent surgery received MRI scans before and after surgery, whereas healthy controls and patients with CSDH who received pharmaceutical treatment received only one MRI scan at enrollment. The signal unit ratio (SUR) of mLVs were then measured according to the MRI data and calculated to define mLVs' drainage function. Finally, the relationship between mLVs' drainage function and CSDH recurrence was analyzed accordingly. Thirty-four participants were enrolled in this study, including 27 CSDH patients and 7 controls. The SUR of mLVs in all CSDH patients changed significantly before and after surgery. Moreover, the drainage function of the mLVs ipsilateral to hematoma (mLVs-IH) in CSDH patients was significantly lower than that in the controls (p < 0.05). Last, a higher improvement rate of the drainage function of the mLVs-IH is correlated to a lower risk of recurrence (p < 0.05). This study revealed the mLVs' drainage dysfunction after CSDH through non-invasive MRI. Furthermore, the drainage function of mLVs is an independent predictive factor of CSDH recurrence.

Higher Functional Connectivity of Ventral Attention and Visual Network to Maintain Cognitive Performance in White Matter Hyperintensity

Ventral attention network (VAN), associated with cognitive performance, is one of the functional networks that are most vulnerable in white matter hyperintensity (WMH). Considering the global interaction of networks for cognitive performance, we hypothesized that VAN-related between-network connectivity might play a role in maintaining cognition in patients with WMH. We included 139 participants for both cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis from CIRCLE study (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03542734) between January 2014 and January 2021. Differences of VAN-related between-network connectivity were compared between normal-cognition (NC) and cognitive-impairment (CI) groups cross-sectionally, and between cognitive-decline (CD) and cognitive non-decline (CND) groups longitudinally by using t-test. False Discovery Rate was used for multiple comparison correction. The relationship between the network connectivity and WMH was tested on linear and quadratic models. Subgroup analysis of different WMH burdens were performed to test the difference of network connectivity between NC and CI groups. Among VAN-related between-network connectivity, only VAN-Visual Network (VN) connectivity was higher both in NC (n = 106) and CND (n = 113) groups versus CI (n = 33) and CD groups (n = 26), respectively. There was an inverted U-shaped relation between periventricular WMH (PWMH) burden and VAN-VN connectivity. Normal-cognition participants had higher VAN-VN connectivity among high, but not low PWMH burden subgroups. These findings suggest that the VAN-VN connectivity plays an important role in maintaining cognitive performance in WMH patients. It may serve as a unique marker for cognitive prediction and a potential target for intervention to prevent cognitive decline in WMH patients.

Strategies for efficient management of microplastics to achieve life cycle assessment and circular economy

The anticipated increase in the influx of plastic waste into aquatic environments has propelled the identification and elimination of plastic waste into the global agenda. The plastics sector generates a significant volume of materials, which, due to their extended durability, accumulate rapidly in natural ecosystems. Consequently, this indiscriminate utilization, along with the deposition of plastic waste (PW) in landfills and inadequate recycling practices, leads to diverse economic, social, and environmental consequences. Microplastics (MPs) are a type of PW that has been fragmented into particles measuring less than 5 mm. These particles have been found in several environments, including the air, soil, freshwater, and ocean ecosystems, where they accumulate in large quantities. In order to gain insight into the ecological risks and resource implications associated with a plastic product, it is strongly advised to conduct life cycle and sustainability analyses. Therefore, this paper examines various strategies aimed at achieving effective management of MP waste in order to develop a conceptual framework for MPs in circular economy and life cycle assessment (LCA). The findings of this study provides a new avenue for future research and contribution to manage MP waste as well as reduce their environmentally hazardous impact.

Decolorization of reactive azo dye using novel halotolerant yeast consortium HYC and proposed degradation pathway

The presence of high salinity levels in textile wastewater poses a significant obstacle to the process of decolorizing azo dyes. The present study involved the construction of a yeast consortium HYC, which is halotolerant and was recently isolated from wood-feeding termites. The consortium HYC was mainly comprised of Sterigmatomyces halophilus SSA-1575 and Meyerozyma guilliermondii SSA-1547. The developed consortium demonstrated a decolourization efficiency of 96.1% when exposed to a concentration of 50 mg/l of Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The HYC consortium significantly decolorized RB5 up to concentrations of 400 mg/l and in the presence of NaCl up to 50 g/l. The effects of physicochemical factors and the degradation pathway were systematically investigated. The optimal pH, salinity, temperature, and initial dye concentration were 7.0, 3%, 35 °C and 50 mg/l, respectively. The co-carbon source was found to be essential, and the addition of glucose resulted in a 93% decolorization of 50 mg/l RB5. The enzymatic activity of various oxido-reductases was assessed, revealing that NADH-DCIP reductase and azo reductase exhibited greater activity in comparison to other enzymes. UV-Visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were utilized to identify the metabolites generated during the degradation of RB5. Subsequently, a metabolic pathway was proposed. The confirmation of degradation was established through alterations in the functional groups and modifications in molecular weight. The findings indicate that this halotolerant yeast consortium exhibits promising potential of degrading dye compounds. The results of this study offer significant theoretical basis and crucial perspectives for the implementation of halotolerant yeast consortia in the bioremediation of textile and hypersaline wastewater. This approach is particularly noteworthy as it does not produce aromatic amines.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, statin therapy, and cerebral microbleeds: The CIRCLE study

BACKGROUND

Current evidence suggests a potential association between cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, and statin use, but the exact relationship remains unclear. This study aims to prospectively examine these relationships in a stroke-free population.

METHODS

From January 2010 to January 2020, we enrolled stroke-free individuals with at least one cerebral small vessel disease imaging marker from the CIRCLE study (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03542734). Participants underwent baseline and 1-year follow-up susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), and baseline LDL-C testing. New CMBs were categorized as strictly lobar and deep CMBs based on location.

RESULTS

A total of 209 individuals were included. Baseline serum LDL-C levels were divided into quartiles: Q1 (≤1.76 mmol/L), Q2 (1.77-2.36 mmol/L), Q3 (2.37-2.93 mmol/L), and Q4 (>2.93 mmol/L). The incidence of new deep CMBs was 30.0%, 11.1%, 10.9%, 8.2% in Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, respectively. Multivariate logistic model revealed that only LDL-C in Q1 was associated with increased incidence of new deep CMBs (OR = 4.256; 95% CI: 1.156-15.666; p = 0.029). In a subset of 169 participants without prior statin use, the use of atorvastatin was associated with reduced occurrence of new deep CMBs (OR = 0.181; 95% CI: 0.035-0.928; p = 0.040), while it was not found with rosuvastatin (OR = 0.808; 95% CI: 0.174-3.741; p = 0.785).

CONCLUSIONS

While lower LDL-C levels were associated with higher CMB development, statin therapy did not increase the risk of new CMBs. Atorvastatin even demonstrated a protective effect.

Characterization and bioactivities of exopolysaccharide produced from Azotobacter salinestris EPS-AZ-6

This study involved the extraction of an exopolysaccharide (EPS) from Azotobacter salinestris AZ-6, which was isolated from soil cultivated with leguminous plants. In a medium devoid of nitrogen, the AZ-6 strain displayed a maximum EPS yield of 1.1 g/l and the highest relative viscosity value of 3.4. The homogeneity of the polymer was demonstrated by the average molecular weight of 1.61 × 106 Da and a retention time of 17.211 min for levan. The presence of characteristic functional groups and structural units of carbohydrate polymers has been confirmed through spectroscopic analyses utilizing Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed a noteworthy decrease in weight (74 %) in the temperature range spanning from 260 to 350 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was utilized to verify the crystalline and amorphous characteristics of EPS-AZ-6. The EPS-AZ-6 exhibited significant cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 tumor cell line, as evidenced by an IC50 value of 6.39 ± 0.05 μg/ml. It also demonstrated a moderate degree of cytotoxicity towards HepG-2 cell line, as indicated by an IC50 value of 29.79 ± 0.41 μg/ml. EPS-AZ-6 exhibited potent antioxidant and in vitro antibacterial properties. These characteristics suggest the potential application value of EPS-AZ-6 in the food industry and pharmaceutical applications.

Construction of Data-Driven Performance Digital Twin for a Real-World Gas Turbine Anomaly Detection Considering Uncertainty

Anomaly detection and failure prediction of gas turbines is of great importance for ensuring reliable operation. This work presents a novel approach for anomaly detection based on a data-driven performance digital twin of gas turbine engines. The developed digital twin consists of two parts: uncertain performance digital twin (UPDT) and fault detection capability. UPDT is a probabilistic digital representation of the expected performance behavior of real-world gas turbine engines operating under various conditions. Fault detection capability is developed based on detecting UPDT outputs that have low probability under the training distribution. A novel anomaly measure based on the first Wasserstein distance is proposed to characterize the entire flight data, and a threshold can be applied to this measure to detect anomaly flights. The proposed UPDT with uncertainty quantification is trained with the sensor data from an individual physical reality and the outcome of the UPDT is intended to deliver the health assessment and fault detection results to support operation and maintenance decision-making. The proposed method is demonstrated on a real-world dataset from a typical type of commercial turbofan engine and the result shows that the F1 score reaches a maximum of 0.99 with a threshold of 0.45. The case study demonstrated that the proposed novel anomaly detection method can effectively identify the abnormal samples, and it is also possible to isolate anomalous behavior in a single performance signal, which is helpful for further fault diagnosis once an anomaly is detected.

Glymphatic function plays a protective role in ageing-related cognitive decline

OBJECTIVE

The glymphatic pathway, characterised as a cerebral drainage system, influences cognitive function in neurodegenerative diseases; however, evidence is limited in a normal ageing population. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of glymphatic function on ageing-related cognitive decline.

METHODS

We retrospectively reviewed the Cognitive Impairment, Retinopathy, and Cerebrovascular Lesions in the Elderly (CIRCLE) study, and participants with multi-model magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and Mini-Mental State Examinations (MMSE) were enrolled. Glymphatic function was evaluated via the diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index. Regression models were used to estimate the impact of the DTI-ALPS index on cognitive decline cross-sectionally and longitudinally. We further analysed the mediation effect of the DTI-ALPS on age and cognitive function.

RESULTS

A total of 633 participants were included in this study (48.2% female; mean age, 62.8 ± 8.9 years). The DTI-ALPS index was positively associated with cognitive function cross-sectionally (β = 0.108, P = 0.003), and was an independent protective factor for cognitive decline longitudinally (odds ratio (OR) = 0.029, P = 0.007). The DTI-ALPS index declined progressively with ageing (r = -0.319, P <0.001), and the decrease was more pronounced after 65 years of age. Furthermore, the DTI-ALPS index mediated the relationship between age and MMSE score (β = -0.016, P <0.001). The mediation effect accounted for 21.3%, which was higher in subjects aged over 65 years (25.3%) compared with those aged under 65 years (5.3%).

CONCLUSION

Glymphatic function played a protective role in normal ageing-related cognitive decline, which may serve as a potential therapeutic target against cognitive decline in future.

Bioplastic production in terms of life cycle assessment: A state-of-the-art review

The current transition to sustainability and the circular economy can be viewed as a socio-technical response to environmental impacts and the need to enhance the overall performance of the linear production and consumption paradigm. The concept of biowaste refineries as a feasible alternative to petroleum refineries has gained popularity. Biowaste has become an important raw material source for developing bioproducts and biofuels. Therefore, effective environmental biowaste management systems for the production of bioproducts and biofuels are crucial and can be employed as pillars of a circular economy. Bioplastics, typically plastics manufactured from bio-based polymers, stand to contribute to more sustainable commercial plastic life cycles as part of a circular economy in which virgin polymers are made from renewable or recycled raw materials. Various frameworks and strategies are utilized to model and illustrate additional patterns in fossil fuel and bioplastic feedstock prices for various governments' long-term policies. This review paper highlights the harmful impacts of fossil-based plastic on the environment and human health, as well as the mass need for eco-friendly alternatives such as biodegradable bioplastics. Utilizing new types of bioplastics derived from renewable resources (e.g., biowastes, agricultural wastes, or microalgae) and choosing the appropriate end-of-life option (e.g., anaerobic digestion) may be the right direction to ensure the sustainability of bioplastic production. Clear regulation and financial incentives are still required to scale from niche polymers to large-scale bioplastic market applications with a truly sustainable impact.

The epidemic of acute lymphoid leukemia in China: current trends and future prediction

Background

China has experienced one of the fastest increases in the incidence of acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL). The aim of this study was to assess the long-term trends of the incidence and mortality of ALL in mainland China between 1990 and 2019 and to project these trends through 2028.

Methods

Data on ALL were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019; population data were extracted from World Population Prospects 2019. An age-period-cohort framework was used in the analysis.

Results

The net drift for the incidence of ALL was 7.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.1%, 7.8%) per year in women and 7.1% (95% CI: 6.7%, 7.6%) in men, and local drift was found to be higher than 0 in every studied age group (p<0.05). The net drift for mortality was 1.2% (95% CI: 1.0%, 1.5%) in women and 2.0% (95% CI: 1.7%, 2.3%) in men. Local drift was lower than 0 in boys aged 0-4 years and girls aged 0-9 years and higher than 0 in men aged 10-84 years and women aged 15-84 years. The estimated period relative risks (RRs) for both incidence and mortality showed increasing trends in the recent period. The cohort RRs for incidence showed increasing trends in both sexes; however, the cohort RR for mortality was decreased in the recent birth cohort (women born after 1988-1992 and men born after 2003-2007). Compared with that in 2019, the incidence of ALL in 2028 is projected to increase by 64.1% in men and 75.0% in women, and the mortality is predicted to decrease by 11.1% in men and 14.3% in women. The proportion of older adult/adults individuals with incident ALL and ALL-related death was projected to increase.

Conclusions

Over the last three decades, the incidence and mortality rates of ALL have generally increased. It is projected that the incidence rate of ALL in mainland China will continue to increase in the future, but the associated mortality rate will decline. The proportion of older adult/adults individuals with incident ALL and ALL-related death was projected to increase gradually among both sexes. More efforts are needed, especially for older adult/adults individuals.

The integrating sphere system plus in-situ absorption monitoring: A new scheme to study absorption enhancement of black carbon in ambient aerosols

Black carbon (BC) is the strongest light-absorbing aerosol in the atmosphere. The coating process causes lensing effects to enhance the BC absorption. The reported BC absorption enhancement values (E_abs) significantly differ partly due to the measurement methods used. The biggest difficulty in measuring the E_abs values is how to denude the coated particles so that the true value of absorption without coatings can be distinguished from lensing effects. In this study, we proposed a new approach based on an integrating sphere (IS) system plus in-situ absorption monitoring instrument to study E_abs in ambient aerosols. This approach is capable of (i) "de-lensing through solvent dissolution and solvent de-refraction", by which the absorption coefficient of denuded BC is acquired, and (ii) monitoring in-situ absorption with photoacoustic spectroscopy. With the help of the EC concentration measured by a thermal/optical carbon analyser, the E_abs values were calculated as the quotient of in-situ mass absorption efficiency divided by denude mass absorption efficiency. We applied this new approach to measure the E_abs values of four seasons in Beijing and found an annual mean of 1.90 ± 0.41 in 2019. More importantly, a previous assumption that BC absorption efficiency may be progressively enhanced by increased air pollution was validated and quantified using a logarithmic relationship of E_abs = 0.6 ln (PM_2.5 ̶ 3.59) ̶ 0.43 (R² = 0.99). This signals a continued drop of E_abs for future ambient aerosols with the sustained improvement in local air quality in China, meriting serious attention to its influences in climate, air quality, and atmospheric chemistry.

Biodegradation of willow sawdust by novel cellulase-producing bacterial consortium from wood-feeding termites for enhancing methane production

This study was designed to develop a cellulase-producing bacterial consortium (CBC) from wood-feeding termites that could effectively degrade willow sawdust (WSD) and consequently enhance methane production. The bacterial strains Shewanella sp. SSA-1557, Bacillus cereus SSA-1558, and Pseudomonas mosselii SSA-1568 exhibited significant cellulolytic activity. Their CBC consortium showed positive effects on cellulose bioconversion, resulting in accelerated WSD degradation. After nine days of pretreatment, the WSD had lost 63%, 50%, and 28% of its cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, respectively. The hydrolysis rate of treated WSD (352 mg/g) was much higher than that of untreated WSD (15.2 mg/g). The highest biogas production (66.1 NL/kg VS) with 66% methane was observed in the anaerobic digester M-2, which contained a combination of pretreated WSD and cattle dung in a 50/50 ratio. The findings will enrich knowledge for the development of cellulolytic bacterial consortia from termite guts for biological wood pretreatment in lignocellulosic anaerobic digestion biorefineries.

Fabrication of bio-inspired anisotropic structures from biopolymers for biomedical applications: A review

The anisotropic features play indispensable roles in regulating various life activities in different organisms. Increasing efforts have been made to learn and mimic various tissues' intrinsic anisotropic structure or functionality for broad applications in different areas, especially in biomedicine and pharmacy. This paper discusses the strategies for fabricating biomaterials using biopolymers for biomedical applications with the case study analysis. Biopolymers, including different polysaccharides, proteins, and their derivates, that have been confirmed with sound biocompatibility for different biomedical applications are summarized, with a special focus on nanocellulose. Advanced analytical techniques for understanding and characterizing the biopolymer-based anisotropic structures for various biomedical applications are also summarized. Challenges still exist in precisely constructing biopolymers-based biomaterials with anisotropic structures from molecular to macroscopic levels and fitting the dynamic processes in native tissue. It is foreseeable that with the advancement of biopolymers' molecular functionalization, biopolymer building block orientation manipulation strategies, and structural characterization techniques, developing anisotropic biopolymer-based biomaterials for different biomedical applications would significantly contribute to a friendly disease-curing and healthcare experience.

Host-Specific Diversity of Culturable Bacteria in the Gut Systems of Fungus-Growing Termites and Their Potential Functions towards Lignocellulose Bioconversion

Fungus-growing termites are eusocial insects that represent one of the most efficient and unique systems for lignocellulose bioconversion, evolved from a sophisticated symbiosis with lignocellulolytic fungi and gut bacterial communities. Despite a plethora of information generated during the last century, some essential information on gut bacterial profiles and their unique contributions to wood digestion in some fungus-growing termites is still inadequate. Hence, using the culture-dependent approach, the present study aims to assess and compare the diversity of lignocellulose-degrading bacterial symbionts within the gut systems of three fungus-growing termites: Ancistrotermes pakistanicus, Odontotermes longignathus, and Macrotermes sp. A total of 32 bacterial species, belonging to 18 genera and 10 different families, were successfully isolated and identified from three fungus-growing termites using Avicel or xylan as the sole source of carbon. Enterobacteriaceae was the most dominant family represented by 68.1% of the total bacteria, followed by Yersiniaceae (10.6%) and Moraxellaceae (9%). Interestingly, five bacterial genera such as Enterobacter, Citrobacter, Acinetobacter, Trabulsiella, and Kluyvera were common among the tested termites, while the other bacteria demonstrated a termite-specific distribution. Further, the lignocellulolytic potential of selected bacterial strains was tested on agricultural waste to evaluate their capability for lignocellulose bioconversion. The highest substrate degradation was achieved with E. chengduensis MA11 which degraded 45.52% of rice straw. All of the potential strains showed endoglucanase, exoglucanase, and xylanase activities depicting a symbiotic role towards the lignocellulose digestion within the termite gut. The above results indicated that fungus-growing termites harbor a diverse array of bacterial symbionts that differ from species to species, which may play an inevitable role to enhance the degradation efficacy in lignocellulose decomposition. The present study further elaborates our knowledge about the termite-bacteria symbiosis for lignocellulose bioconversion which could be helpful to design a future biorefinery.

Biodegradation of low-density polyethylene plastic waste by a constructed tri-culture yeast consortium from wood-feeding termite: Degradation mechanism and pathway

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most common synthetic polymers, and PE waste pollution has been an environmental and health concern for decades. Biodegradation is the most eco-friendly and effective approach for plastic waste management. Recently, an emphasis has been placed on novel symbiotic yeasts isolated from termite guts as promising microbiomes for multiple biotechnological applications. This study might be the first to explore the potential of a constructed tri-culture yeast consortium, designated as DYC, isolated from termites for the degradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The yeast consortium DYC stands for the molecularly identified species Sterigmatomyces halophilus, Meyerozyma guilliermondii, and Meyerozyma caribbica. The LDPE-DYC consortium showed a high growth rate on UV-sterilized LDPE as a sole carbon source, resulting in a reduction in tensile strength (TS) of 63.4% and a net LDPE mass reduction of 33.2% compared to the individual yeasts. All yeasts, individually and in consortium, showed a high production rate for LDPE-degrading enzymes. The hypothetical LDPE biodegradation pathway that was proposed revealed the formation of several metabolites, including alkanes, aldehydes, ethanol, and fatty acids. This study emphasizes a novel concept for using LDPE-degrading yeasts from wood-feeding termites for plastic waste biodegradation.

Choroid Plexus Enlargement Exacerbates White Matter Hyperintensity Growth through Glymphatic Impairment

OBJECTIVE

Choroid plexus (CP) is a key regulator in cerebrospinal fluid production, but its contribution to glymphatic clearance function and association with white matter hyperintensity (WMH) remains unclear.

METHODS

This retrospective study included 2 prospective 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cohorts. In cohort 1, patients with indications for lumbar puncture underwent 3-dimensional T1-weighted sequence (3D-T1) before and at 39 hours after intrathecal administration of contrast agent (glymphatic MRI). In cohort 2, patients with WMH were enrolled from the CIRCLE study and had a median follow-up time of 1.4 years. WMH and CP of the lateral ventricles were automatically segmented on T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and 3D-T1, respectively. CP volume was expressed as a ratio to intracranial volume. Glymphatic clearance was measured as signal percentage change from baseline to 39 hours at 8 brain locations based on glymphatic MRI in the first cohort, or as noninvasive diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index based on DTI in the second cohort.

RESULTS

In cohort 1, a total of 52 patients were included. Higher CP volume was correlated with slower glymphatic clearance rate in all brain locations. In cohort 2, a total of 197 patients were included. Baseline CP volume was positively associated with WMH volume and its growth. Furthermore, DTI-ALPS index partially mediated the association of CP with both WMH load and growth.

INTERPRETATIONS

Enlarged CP volume could be an indicator for larger growth of WMH, potentially involving impaired glymphatic clearance function. The exploration of CP may provide a novel perspective to clarify the mechanism of WMH pathogenesis, as well as other glymphatic-related disorders. ANN NEUROL 2023.

Characterization and 3D printing of a biodegradable polylactic acid/thermoplastic polyurethane blend with laccase-modified lignin as a nucleating agent

Polylactic acid (PLA) has been used in fused deposition method (FDM) based 3D printing for many years. Alkali lignin is an undervalued industrial by-product that could upgrade PLA's poor mechanical properties. This work presents a biotechnological approach consisting of a partial degradation of alkali lignin using Bacillus ligniniphilus laccase (Lacc) L1 for its use as a nucleating agent in a polylactic acid/thermoplastic polyurethane (PLA/TPU) blend. Results showed that adding enzymatically modified lignin (EL) increased the elasticity modulus to a maximum of 2.5-fold than the control and conferred a maximum biodegradability rate of 15 % after 6 months under the soil burial method. Furthermore, the printing quality rendered satisfactory smooth surfaces, geometries and a tunable addition of a woody color. These findings open a new door for using laccase as a tool to upgrade lignin's properties and its use as a scaffold in manufacturing more environmentally sustainable filaments with improved mechanical properties for 3D printing.

Inferior Frontal Sulcal Hyperintensity on FLAIR Is Associated with Small Vessel Disease but not Alzheimer's Disease Pathology

BACKGROUND

The inferior frontal sulci are essential sites on the route of cerebrospinal fluid outflow. A recent study suggests that inferior frontal sulcal hyperintensities (IFSH) on FLAIR images might be related to glymphatic dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate whether IFSH is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) burden.

METHODS

We retrospectively collected data from 272 non-demented subjects in the ADNI3 database. The IFSH was assessed on 3D fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images. The standardized uptake value ratios of amyloid and tau PET were used to reflect the AD pathology burden. To measure the SVD burden, we assessed white matter hyperintensities (WMH), dilation of perivascular spaces, microbleeds, and lacunes. Finally, we performed ordinal logistic regression analyses to investigate the associations between the IFSH score and AD pathology and SVD burden.

RESULTS

The IFSH score was associated with the deep WMH score (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.24 - 2.59) controlling for age and sex. The association remained significant in the multivariable regression models. There was no association between the IFSH score and AD pathology burden.

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that the IFSH sign is associated with SVD but not AD pathology. Further studies are needed to confirm the findings.

Extraction of bioactive polysaccharide from Ulva prolifera biomass waste toward potential biomedical application

Ulva prolifera macroalgae blooming caused by water eutrophication seriously affects the marine ecological environment. Exploring an efficient approach to turning algae biomass waste into high-value-added products is significant. The present work aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of the bioactive polysaccharide extraction from Ulva prolifera and to evaluate its potential biomedical application. A short autoclave process was proposed and optimized using the response surface methodology to extract Ulva polysaccharides (UP) with high molar mass. Our results indicated that UP with high molar mass (9.17 × 10⁵ g/mol) and competitive radical scavenging activity (up to 53.4 %) could be effectively extracted with the assistance of Na₂CO₃ (1.3 %, wt.) at a solid-liquid ratio of 1/10 in 26 min. The obtained UP mainly composes of galactose (9.4 %), glucose (73.1 %), xylose (9.6 %), and mannose (4.7 %). The biocompatibility of the UP and its potential application as a bioactive ingredient in 3D cell culture has been evaluated and confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence microscope imaging inspection. This work demonstrated the feasibility of extracting bioactive sulfated polysaccharides with potential applications in biomedicine from biomass waste. Meanwhile, this work also provided an alternative solution to deal with the environmental challenges incurred by algae blooming worldwide.

Biodegradability of polyethylene by efficient bacteria from the guts of plastic-eating waxworms and investigation of its degradation mechanism

Polyethylene (PE) has been regarded as non-biodegradable for decades, and the evidence for its degradation by bacteria remains unclear in the literature. Waxworms have recently gained attention for their ability to degrade natural long-chain polymers and synthetic plastic. This study aims to explore the potential of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)-degrading bacteria from the gut symbionts of lesser waxworm (Achroia grisella) larvae for the effective biodegradation of LEDP. Two bacterial isolates (LDPE-DB1 and LDPE-DB2) exhibited the greatest reduction in tensile strength among all isolates (P < 0.0001), reaching 51.3% and 58.3%, respectively. The bacterial strains LDPE-DB1 and LDPE-DB2 stand for molecularly identified species, Citrobacter freundii and Bacillus sp., respectively. After 5 days of incubation, the cell density of LDPE-DB1 and LDPE-DB2 reached 2.20 × 10⁸ and 1.8 × 10⁸ CFU/mL, respectively. However, after 30 days of incubation, the cell density reached 7.3 × 10⁸ and 5.9 × 10⁸, respectively. The formed cavities indicate the high activity of the isolated bacteria from Achroia grisella larvae where the cavities reach a depth of up to 1.2 µm. The findings of this study demonstrated the presence of LDPE-degrading bacteria in Achroia grisella and provide promising evidence for the biodegradation of plastic waste management in the environment.

Can wood-feeding termites solve the environmental bottleneck caused by plastics? A critical state-of-the-art review

The abundance of synthetic polymers has become an ever-increasing environmental threat in the world. The excessive utilization of plastics leads to the accumulation of such recalcitrant pollutants in the environment. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, unprecedented demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, face masks, and gloves made up of single-use items has resulted in the massive generation of plastic biomedical waste. As secondary pollutants, microplastic particles (<5 mm) are derived from pellet loss and degradation of macroplastics. Therefore, urgent intervention is required for the management of these hazardous materials. Physicochemical approaches have been employed to degrade synthetic polymers, but these approaches have limited efficiency and cause the release of hazardous metabolites or by-products into the environment. Therefore, bioremediation is a proper option as it is both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. On the other hand, plants evolved lignocellulose to be resistant to destruction, whereas insects, such as wood-feeding termites, possess diverse microorganisms in their guts, which confer physiological and ecological benefits to their host. Plastic and lignocellulose polymers share a number of physical and chemical properties, despite their structural and recalcitrance differences. Among these similarities are a hydrophobic nature, a carbon skeleton, and amorphous/crystalline regions. Compared with herbivorous mammals, lignocellulose digestion in termites is accomplished at ordinary temperatures. This unique characteristic has been of great interest for the development of a plastic biodegradation approach by termites and their gut symbionts. Therefore, transferring knowledge from research on lignocellulosic degradation by termites and their gut symbionts to that on synthetic polymers has become a new research hotspot and technological development direction to solve the environmental bottleneck caused by synthetic plastic polymers.

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment: Mechanisms, challenges, recent advances, and future prospects

The rapid expansion of both the global economy and the human population has led to a shortage of water resources suitable for direct human consumption. As a result, water remediation will inexorably become the primary focus on a global scale. Microalgae can be grown in various types of wastewaters (WW). They have a high potential to remove contaminants from the effluents of industries and urban areas. This review focuses on recent advances on WW remediation through microalgae cultivation. Attention has already been paid to microalgae-based wastewater treatment (WWT) due to its low energy requirements, the strong ability of microalgae to thrive under diverse environmental conditions, and the potential to transform WW nutrients into high-value compounds. It turned out that microalgae-based WWT is an economical and sustainable solution. Moreover, different types of toxins are removed by microalgae through biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation processes. Examples are toxins from agricultural runoffs and textile and pharmaceutical industrial effluents. Microalgae have the potential to mitigate carbon dioxide and make use of the micronutrients that are present in the effluents. This review paper highlights the application of microalgae in WW remediation and the remediation of diverse types of pollutants commonly present in WW through different mechanisms, simultaneous resource recovery, and efficient microalgae-based co-culturing systems along with bottlenecks and prospects.

Cobalt oxide nanoparticles as a new strategy for enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion of noxious aquatic weeds

This study investigated the effect of cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co₃O₄-NPs) supplementation on anaerobic microbial population changes and anaerobic digestion (AD) performance and production. Co₃O₄-NPs (3 mg/L) showed the maximum enhancement of biogas yield over the cow dung (CD) as control and the co-digestion process of CD with water hyacinth (WH) by 58.9 and 27.2 %, respectively. Furthermore, methane (CH₄) yield was enhanced by 89.96 and 43.4 % over CD and co-digestion processes, respectively. Additionally, the microbiological assessment analysis using VIT® gene probe technology showed that Co₃O₄-NPs enhance the viability of total bacterial cells by 9 %. The techno-economic analysis reflects the revenue of this strategy on the highest net energy content of biogas, which was achieved with 3 mg/L Co₃O₄-NPs and was 428.05 kWh with a net profit of 67.66 USD/m³ of the substrate. Therefore, nanoparticle supplementation to the AD process can be considered a promising approach to enhance biogas and CH₄.

Environmental and Human Health Impact of Disposable Face Masks During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Wood-Feeding Termites as a Model for Plastic Biodegradation

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented form of plastic pollution: personal protective equipment (PPE). On the eve of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a tremendous increase in the production of plastic-based PPE. To control the spread of the virus, face masks (FMs) are used as primary PPE. Thus, the production and usage of FM significantly increased as the COVID-19 pandemic was still escalating. The primary raw materials for the manufacturing of FMs are non-biodegradable synthetic polymers derived from petrochemicals. This calls for an urgent need to develop novel strategies for the efficient degradation of plastics. Furthermore, most of these masks contain plastic or other derivatives of plastic. The extensive usage of FM generates millions of tons of plastic waste for the environment in a short span of time. However, their degradation in the environment and consequences are poorly understood. Therefore, the potential impacts of disposable FM on the environment and human health during the COVID-19 pandemic are clarified in the present study. Despite structural and recalcitrance variations, lignocellulose and plastic polymers have physicochemical features, including carbon skeletons with comparable chemical bonds as well as hydrophobic properties in amorphous and crystalline regions. In this review, we argue that there is much to be learned from termites by transferring knowledge from research on lignocellulose degradation by termites to that on plastic waste.

Genomic insights into the metabolic potential of a novel lignin-degrading and polyhydroxyalkanoates producing bacterium Pseudomonas sp. Hu109A

Lignin is the most abundant heterogeneous aromatic polymer present on planet Earth and is recalcitrant to degradation due to its complex structure, therefore, imposing a challenge to biorefinery procedures. Identifying new microbial strains with the potential to valorize lignin into useful compounds is indispensable to achieving green sustainable consumption. In this study, a novel Pseudomonas strain designated as Hu109A was isolated from the termite gut and the genome was sequenced and analyzed further. The genome contains a circular chromosome with the size of 5,131,917 bp having a GC content of 62.6% and 4698 genes. Genome annotation reveals that the strain possesses lignin-oxidizing enzymes such as DyP-type peroxidases, laccase, dioxygenase, and aromatic degradation gene clusters. The genome also contains O-methyltransferases which function in accelerating the lignin degradation by methylating the free hydroxyl phenolic compounds which in high concentration can inhibit the lignin peroxidase. Furthermore, the genome exhibits two gene clusters encoding the enzymes related to polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) synthesis. Pseudomonas strains are generally assumed to produce medium chain length PHAs (mcl-PHAs) only, however, strain Hu109A contains both Class II PHA synthase genes involved in mcl-PHAs and Class III PHA synthase gene involved in short-chain length PHAs (scl-PHAs). Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that using 1 g/L lignin as the sole carbon source, the maximum production of PHA observed was 103.68 mg/L, which increased to 186 mg/L with an increase in lignin concentration to 3 g/L. However, PHA production while using glucose as the sole carbon source was significantly lower than the lignin source, and maximum production was 125.6 mg/L with 3 g/L glucose. The strain Hu109A can tolerate a broad range of solvents including methanol, isopropanol, dimethylformamide, and ethanol, revealing its potential for industrial applications.

Impaired peri-olfactory cerebrospinal fluid clearance is associated with ageing, cognitive decline and dyssomnia

BACKGROUND

Animal experiments have demonstrated the dependency of cerebrospinal fluid clearance function on age and sleep, which partially underlay the cognitive decline in the elderly. However, human evidence is lacking, which could be mainly attributed to the limited methods of cerebrospinal fluid clearance function assessment.

METHOD

Serial T1-weighted and T2-fluid attenuated inversion recovery imaging were performed in 92 patients before and at multiple time points including 4.5 h, 15 h and 39 h after intrathecal injection of contrast agent to visualize the putative meningeal lymphatic pathway, peri-olfactory nerve pathway, and peri-optic nerve pathway. We defined the clearance function as the percentage change in signal unit ratio of critical locations in these pathways from baseline to 39 h after intrathecal injection, and further analysed their relationships with age, sleep, and cognitive function.

FINDINGS

Cerebrospinal fluid clearance through the putative meningeal lymphatic and perineural pathways were clearly visualized. The clearance function of putative meningeal lymphatic and perineural pathways were impaired with ageing (all P < 0.05). The clearance function through peri-olfactory nerve pathway in inferior turbinate was positively correlated with sleep quality and cognitive function (both P < 0.05), and mediated the association of sleep quality with cognitive function (percent change in β [bootstrap 95% CI]: 33% [-0.220, -0.007]).

INTERPRETATION

The impaired clearance through putative peri-olfactory nerve pathway may explain the cognitive decline in patients with sleep disturbance. The study shows a promising method to assess cerebrospinal fluid clearance function of putative peri-neural pathways via dynamic magnetic resonance imaging with intrathecal injection of contrast agent.

Biowastes for biodegradable bioplastics production and end-of-life scenarios in circular bioeconomy and biorefinery concept

Due to global urbanization, industrialization, and economic development, biowastes generation represents negative consequences on the environment and human health. The use of generated biowastes as a feedstock for biodegradable bioplastic production has opened a new avenue for environmental sustainability from the circular (bio)economy standpoint. Biodegradable bioplastic production can contribute to the sustainability pillars (environmental, economic, and social). Furthermore, bioenergy, biomass, and biopolymers production after recycling of biodegradable bioplastic can help to maintain the energy-environment balance. Several types of biodegradable bioplastic, such as starch-based, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polylactic acid, and polybutylene adipate terephthalate, can achieve this aim. In this review, an overview of the main biowastes valorization routes and the main biodegradable bioplastic types of production, application, and biodegradability are discussed to achieve the transition to the circular economy. Additionally, end-of-life scenarios (up-cycle and down-cycle) are reviewed to attain the maximum environmental, social, and economic benefit from biodegradable bioplastic products under biorefinery concept.

Arabinan hydrolysis by GH43 enzymes of Hungateiclostridium clariflavum and the potential synergistic mechanisms

Glycoside hydrolase family 43 (GH43) represents a major source of arabinan- and arabinoxylan-active enzymes. Interestingly, some microbes remarkably enriched GH genes of this family, with the reason unknown. Hungateiclostridium clariflavum DSM 19,732 is an efficient lignocellulose degrader, which harbors up to 7 GH43 genes in its genome. We cloned three of the seven GH43 genes, and found that Abn43A is a unique endoarabinanase, which unprecedently showed approximately two times larger activity on sugar beet arabinan (116.8 U/mg) than that on linear arabinan, and it is efficient in arabinooligosaccharide production. Abn43B is an exoarabinanase which directly releases arabinose from linear arabinan. Abn43C is an α-L-arabinofuranosidase which is capable of splitting the arabinose side-chains from arabinooligosaccharides, arabinoxylooligosaccharides, and arabinoxylan. Most importantly, the three GH43 enzymes synergized in hydrolyzing arabinan. Compared to Abn43B alone, a supplement of Abn43A increased the arabinose production from linear arabinan by 150%, reaching 0.44 g/g arabinan. Moreover, an addition of Abn43C to Abn43A and Abn43B boosted the arabinose production from sugar beet arabinan by 15 times, reaching 0.262 g/g arabinan. Our work suggested the intensified functions of multiple GH43 enzymes toward arabinan degradation in H. clariflavum, and a potential synergetic mechanism among the three GH43 enzymes is suggested. Exploring the region-wise diversity and functions of symbiotic bacteria in the gut system of wood-feeding termite, Coptotermes formosanus, toward the degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose, and organic dyes

The wood-feeding termite Coptotermes formosanus represents a unique and impressive system for lignocellulose degradation. The highly efficient digestion of lignocellulose is achieved through symbiosis with gut symbionts like bacteria. Despite extensive research during the last three decades, diversity of bacterial symbionts residing in individual gut regions of the termite and their associated functions is still lacking. To this end, cellulose, xylan, and dye-decolorization bacteria residing in foregut, midgut, and hindgut regions of C. formosanus were enlisted by using enrichment and culture-dependent molecular methods. A total of 87 bacterial strains were successfully isolated from different gut regions of C. formosanus which belonged to 27 different species of 10 genera, majorly affiliated with Proteobacteria (80%) and Firmicutes (18.3%). Among the gut regions, 37.9% of the total bacterial isolates were observed in the hindgut that demonstrated predominance of cellulolytic bacteria (47.6%). The majority of the xylanolytic and dye-decolorization bacteria (50%) were obtained from the foregut and midgut, respectively. Actinobacteria represented by Dietza sp. was observed in the hindgut only. Based on species richness, the highest diversity was observed in midgut and hindgut regions each of which harbored seven unique bacterial species. The members of Enterobacter, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas were common among the gut regions. The lignocellulolytic activities of the selected potential bacteria signpost their assistance to the host for lignocellulose digestion. The overall results indicate that C. formosanus harbors diverse communities of lignocellulolytic bacteria in different regions of the gut system. These observations will significantly advance our understanding of the termite-bacteria symbiosis and their microbial ecology uniquely existed in different gut regions of C. formosanus, which may further shed a light on its potential values at termite-modeled biotechnology.

Naturally Derived Janus Cellulose Nanomaterials: Anisotropic Cellulose Nanomaterial Building Blocks and Their Assembly into Asymmetric Structures

Naturally derived cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) with desirable physicochemical properties have drawn tremendous attention for their versatile applications in a broad range of fields. More recently, Janus amphiphilic cellulose nanomaterial particles with asymmetric structures (i.e., reducing and nonreducing ends and crystalline and amorphous domains) have been in the spotlight, offering a rich and sophisticated toolbox for Janus nanomaterials. With careful surface and interfacial engineering, Janus CNM particles have demonstrated great potential as surface modifiers, emulsifiers, stabilizers, compatibilizers, and dispersants in emulsions, nanocomposites, and suspensions. Naturally derived Janus CNM particles offer a fascinating opportunity for scaling up the production of self-standing Janus CNM membranes. Nevertheless, most Janus CNM membranes to date are constructed by asymmetric fabrication or asymmetric modification without considering the Janus traits of CNM particles. More future research should focus on the self-assembly of Janus CNM particles into bulk self-standing Janus CNM membranes to enable more straightforward and sustainable approaches for Janus membranes. This review explores the fabrication, structure-property relationship, and Janus configuration mechanisms of Janus CNM particles and membranes. Janus CNM membranes are highlighted for their versatile applications in liquid, thermal, and light management. This review also highlights the significant advances and future perspectives in the construction and application of sustainable Janus CNM particles and membranes.

Biomechanical Characteristics of the Femoral Isthmus during Total Hip Arthroplasty in Patients with Adult Osteoporosis and Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: A Finite Element Analysis

Objective

This study investigated the underlying mechanisms of high fracture incidence in the femoral isthmus from a biomechanical perspective.

Methods

We retrospectively analyzed a total of 923 primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients and 355 osteoporosis (OP) patients admitted from January 2010 to January 2018. Through a series of screening conditions, 47 patients from each group were selected for inclusion in the study. The datasets on the unaffected side and affected side of the patients with unilateral developmental dysplasia of the hip (uDDH) were respectively classified as the normal group (Group I) and he tDDH group (Group II), and that of patients with osteoporosis were classified as the OP group (Group III). In this study, first, we collected computed tomography (CT) images and measured geometric parameters (inner and outer diameters) of the isthmus. Thereafter, to study biomechanical properties, we established six finite element models and calculated values of von Mises stress for each group with the methods of data conversion and grid processing.

Results

Compared with those of patients in the normal group, the values of the inner and outer diameters of femoral isthmus of patients in the DDH group were significantly lower (P < 0.001), while the inner diameters of patients in the OP group were significantly higher (P < 0.001) and the outer diameters of patients in the OP group showed no significant difference (P> 0.05). The cortical rates of patients in the normal group and the DDH group appeared insignificant (P > 0.05), and those of patients in normal group were significantly higher than those of patients in the OP group (P < 0.001). Moreover, patients in the DDH group showed a higher von Mises stress value than patients in the normal group (P < 0.001), but statistically speaking the values between patients in the OP and normal groups were insignificant (P > 0.05).

Conclusions

The relatively shorter inner and outer diameters of the isthmus in DDH resulted in intensive von Mises stress under the torque of the hip location, and induced a high fracture incidence. However, in patients in the OP group, the geometric morphology exhibited no anatomical variation, and the fracture was not due to the intensity of von Mises stress.

The epidemic of thyroid cancer in China: Current trends and future prediction

Background

Thyroid cancer (TC) is one of the most common cancers in China. The aim of this study was to identify the potential age, period, and cohort effect under the long-term trends in TC incidence and mortality, making projections up to 2030.

Methods

Incidence and mortality data on TC were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The population predictions were obtained from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2019. An age–period–cohort model was used for the analysis.

Results

From 1990 to 2019, the net drift (the overall annual percentage change of TC over time adjusted for age groups) of the TC incidence was 5.01% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.72%, 5.29%) for men and 1.48% (95% CI: 1.14%, 1.82%) for women. The net drift of TC mortality was 1.64% (95% CI: 1.38%, 1.91%) for men and –2.51% (95% CI: –2.77%, –2.26%) for women. Regarding the incidence of TC, both the period and the cohort relative risks (RRs) in men and women showed an overall increasing trend. As to the mortality rate of TC, both the period and cohort RRs in women showed a monotonic declining trend. The period RRs for men decreased after 2015, but the cohort RRs revealed a fluctuating upward pattern. From 2019 to 2030, the TC incidence was projected to rise by 32.4% in men and 13.1% in women, the mortality declining by 13.0% in men and 17.3% in women. The elderly was projected to have an increasing proportion of TC occurrence and deaths.

Conclusions

Over the past 30 years, the incidence rate of TC in China has continually increased, and this trend was projected to continue. Although male mortality has increased in the past, it is expected to decline in the future. The proportion of older people among TC occurrence and death was projected to gradually increase, and the difficulties elderly with TC lrequire more attention.

Investigating the relationship between mass concentration of particulate matter and reactive oxygen species based on residential coal combustion source tests

Particulate matter (PM) has been considered to be closely related to human health, especially fine particulate matter. However, whether PM mass concentration alone is a good indicator for health impact remains a challenging question. In this study, emissions from residential coal combustion (RCC), one of the important PM sources in northern China, were tested to examine the relationship between the emission factors of particle-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) (EF_ROS) and PM (EF_PM). A total of 24 combinations of source tests were conducted, including eight types of coal with different geological maturities (two anthracites and six bituminous) burned in three types of stoves (one honeycomb coal stove, one old chunk stove, and one new chunk stove). Here, ROS was defined as generated hydroxyl radical (·OH) by PM, and results showed EF_ROS from 24 residential coal combustion varied greatly by nearly 20 times. EF_ROS ranged 0.78-14.85 and 2.99-12.91 mg kg^-1 for the emissions from honeycomb and chunk coals, respectively. Moreover, the correlation between EF_ROS and EF_PM was significantly positive in honeycomb coal emissions (r = 0.82, p < 0.05), but it was insignificant in chunk coal emissions (r = 0.07, p > 0.05). For honeycomb coal emissions, organic carbon (OC) was quite abundant in PM and it might be the predominant contributor to both EF_PM and EF_ROS, resulting in a strong and positive correlation. For chunk coal emissions, high EF_ROS was mainly related to relatively high metal emissions in AN and LVB, while the metals were not major components in PM, leading to a poor correlation between EF_PM and EF_ROS. Therefore, this study revealed that PM was not always positively correlated with ROS from residential coal burning, and the relationship was mainly determined by the compositions of PM, suggesting PM mass concentration alone may not be the best indicator for assessing health impacts.

Different mechanisms in periventricular and deep white matter hyperintensities in old subjects

Objective

Although multiple pieces of evidence have suggested that there are different mechanisms in periventricular white matter hyperintensities (PWMHs) and deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMHs), the exact mechanism remains uncertain.

Methods

We reviewed clinical and imaging data of old participants from a local She Ethnic group. We assessed the cerebral blood flow of white matter (WM-CBF) on arterial spin-labeling, deep medullary veins (DMVs) visual score on susceptibility-weighted imaging, and index for diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS index), indicating glymphatic function on diffusion tensor imaging. Furthermore, we investigated their relationships with volumes of PWMHs and DWMHs.

Results

A total of 152 subjects were included, with an average age of 63 ± 8 years old. We found that higher age and history of hypertension were independently related to higher volumes of both PWMHs and DWMHs (all p &lt; 0.05). Lower ALPS index was independently associated with higher PWMHs volumes (β = 0.305, p &lt; 0.001), and this relationship was accounted for by the indirect pathway via DMVs score (β = 0.176, p = 0.017). Both lower ALPS index and WM-CBF were independent risk factors for higher DWMHs volumes (β = −0.146, p = 0.041; β = −0.147, p = 0.036).

Conclusions

Our study indicated that there were different mechanisms in PWMHs and DWMHs. PWMHs were mainly attributed to the damage of veins due to the dysfunction of the glymphatic pathway, while DWMHs could be affected by both ischemia-hypoperfusion and dysfunction of the glymphatic pathway.

Advances in knowledge

The relationship between glymphatic dysfunction and PWMHs might be accounted for by the indirect pathway via venous abnormalities, a glymphatic dysfunction, and lower CBF in white matter were independent risk factors for DWMHs.
