Abstract
Considering sex as a biological variable in modern digital health solutions, we investigated sex-specific differences in the trajectory of four physiological parameters across a COVID-19 infection. A wearable medical device measured breathing rate, heart rate, heart rate variability, and wrist skin temperature in 1163 participants (mean age = 44.1 years, standard deviation [SD] = 5.6; 667 [57%] females). Participants reported daily symptoms and confounders in a complementary app. A machine learning algorithm retrospectively ingested daily biophysical parameters to detect COVID-19 infections. COVID-19 serology samples were collected from all participants at baseline and follow-up. We analysed potential sex-specific differences in physiology and antibody titres using multilevel modelling and t-tests. Over 1.5 million hours of physiological data were recorded. During the symptomatic period of infection, men demonstrated larger increases in skin temperature, breathing rate, and heart rate as well as larger decreases in heart rate variability than women. The COVID-19 infection detection algorithm performed similarly well for men and women. Our study belongs to the first research to provide evidence for differential physiological responses to COVID-19 between females and males, highlighting the potential of wearable technology to inform future precision medicine approaches.

Abstract
The soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), as a correlate of chronic low-grade inflammation, may be used to predict individual cardiovascular risk. Since chronic low-grade inflammation is thought to be associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, this study aimed to evaluate if suPAR plasma levels are correlated with cardiovascular risk factors in young and healthy adults (aged 25-41 years). Consequently, data from the GAPP (genetic and phenotypic determinants of blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors) study were used to investigate suPAR plasma levels in relation to the following cardiovascular risk factors and laboratory parameters: BMI, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking status, blood pressure parameters, glucose status, and lipid levels. Additionally, suPAR was compared to the healthy lifestyle score and the Framingham score representing the overall cardiovascular risk profile. These associations were assessed using two different statistical approaches. Firstly, all cardiovascular risk factors and scores were compared amongst sex-specific suPAR plasma levels with ANOVA analysis. Secondly, sex-specific multivariable linear regressions were performed. Female participants had higher plasma suPAR levels than male participants (1.73 ng/mL versus 1.50 ng/mL; p < 0.001). A significant inverse correlation between suPAR plasma levels and HDL cholesterol was found in men (p = 0.001) and women (p < 0.001). Furthermore, male (p < 0.001) and female participants (p < 0.001) who smoked showed significantly higher plasma levels of suPAR (p < 0.001). For male participants, an inverse correlation of the healthy lifestyle score with suPAR plasma levels (p = 0.001) and a positive correlation of the Framingham score with suPAR plasma levels (p < 0.001) were detected. In women, no such correlation was found. The cholesterol levels (p = 0.001) and HbA1c (p = 0.008) correlated significantly with plasma suPAR levels in female participants. suPAR plasma levels were found to be strongly associated with certain cardiovascular risk factors; however, sex-specific differences were found. These sex-specific differences might be explained by the higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in men resulting in a stronger correlation of suPAR as a marker of low-grade inflammation, since the existence of the risk factors already led to subclinical damage in men. Further research on suPAR levels in an older study population is needed.

Abstract
It is unknown whether neurological symptoms are associated with brain injury after SARS-CoV-2 infections and whether brain injury and related symptoms also emerge in Long-COVID patients. Biomarkers such as serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP) can be used to elucidate neuro-axonal and astroglial injuries. We investigated whether these biomarkers are associated with COVID-19 infection status, associated symptoms and Long-COVID. From 146 individuals of the general population with a post-acute, mild-to-moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection, sNfL and sGFAP were measured before, during and after (five and ten months) the infection. Individual symptoms and Long-COVID status were assessed using questionnaires. Neurological associated symptoms were described for individuals after a mild and moderate COVID-19 infection; however, sNfL (p = 0.74) and sGFAP (p = 0.24) did not change and were not associated with headache (p = 0.51), fatigue (p = 0.93), anosmia (p = 0.77) or ageusia (p = 0.47). In Long-COVID patients, sGFAP (p = 0.038), but not sNfL (p = 0.58), significantly increased but was not associated with neurological associated symptoms. Long-COVID status, but not post-acute SARS-CoV-2 infections, may be associated with astroglial injury/activation, even if neurological associated symptoms were not correlated.

Abstract
There is a need for blood biomarkers to detect individuals at different Alzheimer's disease (AD) stages because obtaining cerebrospinal fluid-based biomarkers is invasive and costly. Plasma phosphorylated tau proteins (p-tau) have shown potential as such biomarkers. This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and aimed to determine whether quantification of plasma tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 (p-tau181), threonine 217 (p-tau217) and threonine 231 (p-tau231) is informative in the diagnosis of AD. All p-tau isoforms increase as a function of Aβ-accumulation and discriminate healthy individuals from those at preclinical AD stages with high accuracy. P-tau231 increases earliest, followed by p-tau181 and p-tau217. In advanced stages, all p-tau isoforms are associated with the clinical classification of AD and increase with disease severity, with the greatest increase seen for p-tau217. This is also reflected by a better correlation of p-tau217 with Aβ scans, whereas both, p-tau217 and p-tau181 correlated equally with tau scans. However, at the very advanced stages, p-tau181 begins to plateau, which may mirror the trajectory of the Aβ pathology and indicate an association with a more intermediate risk of AD. Across the AD continuum, the incremental increase in all biomarkers is associated with structural changes in widespread brain regions and underlying cognitive decline. Furthermore, all isoforms differentiate AD from non-AD neurodegenerative disorders, making them specific for AD. Incorporating p-tau181, p-tau217 and p-tau231 in clinical use requires further studies to examine ideal cut-points and harmonize assays.

Abstract
Premature atrial contractions (PACs) are frequently observed on electrocardiograms and are associated with increased risks of atrial fibrillation (AF), stroke, and mortality. In this study, we aimed to identify genetic susceptibility loci for PAC frequency. We performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis with PAC frequency obtained from ambulatory cardiac monitoring in 4,831 individuals of European ancestry. We identified a genome-wide significant locus at the SCN5A gene. The lead variant, rs7373862, located in an intron of SCN5A, was associated with an increase of 0.12 [95% CI 0.08–0.16] standard deviations of the normalized PAC frequency per risk allele. Among genetic variants previously associated with AF, there was a significant enrichment in concordance of effect for PAC frequency (n = 73/106, p = 5.1 × 10−5). However, several AF risk loci, including PITX2, were not associated with PAC frequency. These findings suggest the existence of both shared and distinct genetic mechanisms for PAC frequency and AF. Abstract
OBJECTIVES We investigated machinelearningbased identification of presymptomatic COVID-19 and detection of infection-related changes in physiology using a wearable device. DESIGN Interim analysis of a prospective cohort study. SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS Participants from a national cohort study in Liechtenstein were included. Nightly they wore the Ava-bracelet that measured respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV), wrist-skin temperature (WST) and skin perfusion. SARS-CoV-2 infection was diagnosed by molecular and/or serological assays. RESULTS A total of 1.5 million hours of physiological data were recorded from 1163 participants (mean age 44±5.5 years). COVID-19 was confirmed in 127 participants of which, 66 (52%) had worn their device from baseline to symptom onset (SO) and were included in this analysis. Multi-level modelling revealed significant changes in five (RR, HR, HRV, HRV ratio and WST) device-measured physiological parameters during the incubation, presymptomatic, symptomatic and recovery periods of COVID-19 compared with baseline. The training set represented an 8-day long instance extracted from day 10 to day 2 before SO. The training set consisted of 40 days measurements from 66 participants. Based on a random split, the test set included 30% of participants and 70% were selected for the training set. The developed long short-term memory (LSTM) based recurrent neural network (RNN) algorithm had a recall (sensitivity) of 0.73 in the training set and 0.68 in the testing set when detecting COVID-19 up to 2 days prior to SO. CONCLUSION Wearable sensor technology can enable COVID-19 detection during the presymptomatic period. Our proposed RNN algorithm identified 68% of COVID-19 positive participants 2 days prior to SO and will be further trained and validated in a randomised, single-blinded, two-period, two-sequence crossover trial. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The potential of disease-modifying therapies for Alzheimer's disease has greatly stimulated interest in the development of minimally invasive testing for early identification of at-risk individuals. Accordingly, identification of blood-based biomarkers is paramount. The recent discovery of plasma phosphorylated at threonine217 (p-tau217) may provide a turning point in Alzheimer's disease detection. This systematic review aims to evaluate the available evidence on the use of plasma p-tau217 as a marker to predict Alzheimer's disease and to monitor disease progression. MATERIAL AND METHODS This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Study quality was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. In total, 676 publications were identified, of which 16 were in accordance with the pre-defined eligibility criteria. RESULTS Current evidence shows that plasma p-tau217 is a sensitive maker of the clinical manifestation and progression of Alzheimer's disease and of pathological changes associated with this condition, including amyloid accumulation, tau burden, brain atrophy and physical degradation. Moreover, given that plasma p-tau217 does not predict such changes in patients with other neurodegenerative disorders, plasma p-tau217 is also specific to Alzheimer's disease. CONCLUSION More large, diverse community studies are needed to harmonize plasma p-tau217 measurements and to determine widely applicable diagnostic cut-off values.

Abstract
Background: Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and with beneficial effects on CV risk factors. The albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR) is a risk factor for CVD, all-cause mortality and accelerated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decline in the general population. We aimed to investigate the association between n-3 PUFAS and ACR in heathy individuals with preserved GFR. Design and Methods: The present cross-sectional analysis is part of the GAPP study, a population-based cohort of healthy adults aged 25-41 years. Individuals with known CVD, diabetes, or a BMI >35 kg/m2 were excluded. eGFR was calculated according to the combined Creatinine/Cystatin C CKD-EPI formula. ACR was obtained from a fasting morning urine sample. The Omega-3 Index (relative amount of EPA and DHA of total fatty acids in %) was obtained from whole blood aliquots. Results: Overall, 2001 participants (median age 37 years IQR 31; 40, 53% female) were included in this analysis. Median Omega-3 Index was 4.59 (IQR 4.06; 5.25) and median eGFR 111 ml/min/1.73 m2 (IQR 103; 118). Median ACR was 0.14 mg/mmol (IQR 0; 0.43). We found a significant inverse association of the Omega-3 Index with ACR (ratio 0.84, 95%CI 0.73-0.96; p = 0.011) which remained after comprehensive adjustment (ratio 0.86, 95%CI 0.74-1.00; p = 0.048). No association of the Omega-3 Index with eGFR was found. The adjusted difference in eGFR per 1-unit increase in Omega3-Index was -0.21 (95%CI -0.76; 0.35; p = 0.47). Conclusions: A higher Omega-3 Index was significantly associated with lower ACR in this young and healthy population with preserved eGFR. Omega-3 fatty acids may exhibit cardio- and nephroprotective effects in healthy individuals through modulation of ACR.

Abstract
Pan-immunoglobulin assays can simultaneously detect IgG, IgM and IgA directed against the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the S1 subunit of the spike protein (S) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 S1-RBD Ig). In this work, we aim to evaluate a quantitative SARS-CoV-2 S1-RBD Ig electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) regarding analytical, diagnostic, operational and clinical characteristics. Our work takes the form of a population-based study in the principality of Liechtenstein, including 125 cases with clinically well-described and laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and 1159 individuals without evidence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 cases were tested for antibodies in sera taken with a median of 48 days (interquartile range, IQR, 43-52) and 139 days (IQR, 129-144) after symptom onset. Sera were also tested with other assays targeting antibodies against non-RBD-S1 and -S1/S2 epitopes. Sensitivity was 97.6% (95% confidence interval, CI, 93.2-99.1), whereas specificity was 99.8% (95% CI, 99.4-99.9). Antibody levels linearly decreased from hospitalized patients to symptomatic outpatients and SARS-CoV-2 infection without symptoms (p < 0.001). Among cases with SARS-CoV-2 infection, smokers had lower antibody levels than non-smokers (p = 0.04), and patients with fever had higher antibody levels than patients without fever (p = 0.001). Pan-SARS-CoV-2 S1-RBD Ig in SARS-CoV-2 infection cases significantly increased from first to second follow-up (p < 0.001). A substantial proportion of individuals without evidence of past SARS-CoV-2 infection displayed non-S1-RBD antibody reactivities (248/1159, i.e., 21.4%, 95% CI, 19.1-23.4). In conclusion, a quantitative SARS-CoV-2 S1-RBD Ig assay offers favorable and sustained assay characteristics allowing the determination of quantitative associations between clinical characteristics (e.g., disease severity, smoking or fever) and antibody levels. The assay could also help to identify individuals with antibodies of non-S1-RBD specificity with potential clinical cross-reactivity to SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Knowledge of the sensitivities of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody tests beyond 35 days after the clinical onset of COVID-19 is insufficient. We aimed to describe positivity rate of SARS-CoV-2 assays employing three different measurement principles over a prolonged period. Two hundred sixty-eight samples from 180 symptomatic patients with COVID-19 and a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test followed by serological investigation of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were included. We conducted three chemiluminescence (including electrochemiluminescence assay (ECLIA)), four enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and one lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) test formats. Positivity rates, as well as positive (PPVs) and negative predictive values (NPVs), were calculated for each week after the first clinical presentation for COVID-19. Furthermore, combinations of tests were assessed within an orthogonal testing approach employing two independent assays and predictive values were calculated. Heat maps were constructed to graphically illustrate operational test characteristics. During a follow-up period of more than 9 weeks, chemiluminescence assays and one ELISA IgG test showed stable positivity rates after the third week. With the exception of ECLIA, the PPVs of the other chemiluminescence assays were ≥95% for COVID-19 only after the second week. ELISA and LFIA had somewhat lower PPVs. IgM exhibited insufficient predictive characteristics. An orthogonal testing approach provided PPVs ≥ 95% for patients with a moderate pretest probability (e.g., symptomatic patients), even for tests with a low single test performance. After the second week, NPVs of all but IgM assays were ≥95% for patients with low to moderate pretest probability. The confirmation of negative results using an orthogonal algorithm with another assay provided lower NPVs than the single assays. When interpreting results from SARS-CoV-2 tests, the pretest probability, time of blood draw, and assay characteristics must be carefully considered. An orthogonal testing approach increases the accuracy of positive, but not negative, predictions.

Abstract
Objectives The sensitivity of molecular and serological methods for COVID-19 testing in an epidemiological setting is not well described. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of negative RT-PCR results at first clinical presentation as well as negative serological results after a follow-up of at least 3 weeks. Methods Among all patients seen for suspected COVID-19 in Liechtenstein (n=1921), we included initially RT-PCR positive index patients (n=85) as well as initially RT-PCR negative (n=66) for follow-up with SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing. Antibodies were detected with seven different commercially available immunoassays. Frequencies of negative RT-PCR and serology results in individuals with COVID-19 were determined and compared to those observed in a validation cohort of Swiss patients (n=211). Results Among COVID-19 patients in Liechtenstein, false-negative RT-PCR at initial presentation was seen in 18% (12/66), whereas negative serology in COVID-19 patients was 4% (3/85). The validation cohort showed similar frequencies: 2/66 (3%) for negative serology, and 16/155 (10%) for false negative RT-PCR. COVID-19 patients with negative follow-up serology tended to have a longer disease duration (p=0.05) and more clinical symptoms than other patients with COVID-19 (p<0.05). The antibody titer from quantitative immunoassays was positively associated with the number of disease symptoms and disease duration (p<0.001). Conclusions RT-PCR at initial presentation in patients with suspected COVID-19 can miss infected patients. Antibody titers of SARS-CoV-2 assays are linked to the number of disease symptoms and the duration of disease. One in 25 patients with RT-PCR-positive COVID-19 does not develop antibodies detectable with frequently employed and commercially available immunoassays.

Abstract
An outbreak of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) occurred in November 2012 in Switzerland (CH), traditionally PRRSV-free. It was detected after a German boar stud informed a semen importer about the detection of PRRSV during routine monitoring. Tracing of semen deliveries revealed 26 Swiss sow herds that had used semen from this stud after its last negative routine monitoring and 62 further contact herds. All herds were put under movement restrictions and examined serologically and virologically. As a first measure, 59 sows from five herds that had previously been inseminated with suspicious semen were slaughtered and tested immediately. Investigations in the stud resulted in 8 positive boars with recent semen deliveries to CH (Seven with antibodies and virus, one with antibodies only). In one boar out of six tested, virus was detected in semen. Of the 59 slaughtered sows, five from three herds were virus-positive. In one herd, the virus had spread, and all pigs were slaughtered or non-marketable animals euthanized. In the remaining herds, no further infections were detected. After confirmatory testings in all herds 3 weeks after the first examination gave negative results, restrictions were lifted in January 2013, and Switzerland regained its PRRSV-free status. The events demonstrate that import of semen from non-PRRS-free countries--even from negative studs--poses a risk, because monitoring protocols in boar studs are often insufficient to timely detect an infection, and infections of sows/herds occur even with low numbers of semen doses. The outbreak was eradicated successfully mainly due to the high disease awareness of the importer and because immediate actions were taken before clinical or laboratory diagnosis of a single case in the country was made. To minimize the risk of an introduction of PRRSV in the future, stricter import guidelines for boar semen have been implemented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Induced moderate hypothermia (HT) for 72 h has been shown to reduce the combined outcome of death or severe neurodevelopmental disabilities in asphyxiated full-term infants. A pathological amplitude integrated EEG background as early as 3-6 h after birth, has been shown to correlate to poor prognosis. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between amplitude integrated EEG during HT treatment and short-term outcome in asphyxiated full-term infants with moderate/severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. METHODS Between December 2006 and December 2007, 24 infants were treated with moderate HT (33.5 degrees C for 72 h) using a cooling mattress. Motor functions were assessed at 4 and 12 months of age. RESULTS Of the total birth cohort of 28,837 infants, 26 infants fulfilled the criteria for HT treatment (0.9/1000) of whom 23 was treated with HT and all of these infants had available amplitude integrated EEG data. Normal 1-year outcome was found in 10/15 infants with severely abnormal burst-suppression pattern or worse at 6 h of age. Severe abnormalities were found to be significantly predictive for abnormal outcome after 36 h. CONCLUSION Among asphyxiated infants treated with HT, only those who had aEEG abnormalities persisting at and beyond 24 h after birth showed poor neurological outcome at 1 year.

Abstract
It is well known that sera of patients with systemic autoimmunity contain autoantibodies to nuclear antigens. It is also known that patients with systemic autoimmunity have an increased risk for the development of tumours. Interestingly, tumour patients frequently develop autoantibodies and there is a growing list of potential tumour-associated antigens. It is, however, not known whether or not patients with systemic autoimmunity also develop antibodies to tumour-associated antigens. Here we describe the development of a novel multiprotein array allowing us to screen for autoantibodies to 30 different tumour-associated antigens in parallel. Using this novel assay, we found that the frequency of autoantibodies to the selected tumour-associated antigens is increased between 2- and 14-fold in patients with systemic autoimmunity compared with an age-matched control group.

The change in a worker's capability led to a work conception based on current ability.

Abstract
The phytotoxic effects of auxin herbicides, including the quinoline carboxylic acids quinmerac and quinclorac, the benzoic acid dicamba and the pyridine carboxylic acid picloram, were studied in relation to changes in phytohormonal ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) levels and the production of H(2)O(2) in cleavers (Galium aparine). When plants were root-treated with 10 microM quinmerac, ethylene synthesis was stimulated in the shoot tissue, accompanied by increases in immunoreactive levels of ABA and its precursor xanthoxal. It has been demonstrated that auxin herbicide-stimulated ethylene triggers ABA biosynthesis. The time-course and dose-response of ABA accumulation closely correlated with reductions in stomatal aperture and CO(2) assimilation and increased levels of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), deoxyribonuclease (DNase) activity and chlorophyll loss. The latter parameters were used as sensitive indicators for the progression of tissue damage. On a shoot dry weight basis, DNase activity and H(2)O(2) levels increased up to 3-fold, relative to the control. Corresponding effects were obtained using auxin herbicides from the other chemical classes or when ABA was applied exogenously. It is hypothesized, that auxin herbicides stimulate H(2)O(2) generation which contributes to the induction of cell death in Galium leaves. This overproduction of H(2)O(2) could be triggered by the decline of photosynthetic activity, due to ABA-mediated stomatal closure.

Abstract
Enantiomers of triaziflam and structurally related diaminotriazines were synthesized and their herbicidal mode of action was investigated. The compounds caused light and dark-dependent effects in multiple test systems including heterotrophic cleaver and photoautotrophic algal cell suspensions, the Hill reaction of isolated thylakoids and germinating cress seeds. Dose-response experiments revealed that the (S)-enantiomers of the compounds preferentially inhibited photosystem II electron transport (PET) and algae growth with efficacies similar to that of the herbicide atrazine. In contrast, the (R)-enantiomers of the diaminotriazines were up to 100 times more potent inhibitors of growth in cleaver cell suspensions and cress seedlings in the dark than the (S)-enantiomers. The most active compound, the (R)-enantiomer of triaziflam, inhibited shoot and root elongation of cress and maize seedlings at concentrations below 1 microM. The meristematic root tips swelled into a club shape which is typical for the action of mitotic disrupter herbicides and cellulose biosynthesis inhibitors. Microscopic examination using histochemical techniques revealed that triaziflam (R)-enantiomer blocks cell division in maize root tips 4 h after treatment. The chromosomes proceeded to a condensed state of prometaphase but were unable to progress further in the mitotic cycle. Disruption of mitosis was accompanied by a loss of spindle and phragmoplast micotubule arrays. Concomitantly, cortical microtubules decreased which could lead to isodiametric cell growth and consequently to root swelling. In addition, a decline in cellulose deposition in cell walls was found 24 h after treatment. Compared to the (R)-form, triaziflam (S)-enantiomer was clearly less active. The results suggest that triaziflam and related diaminotriazines affect enantioselectively multiple sites of action which include PET inhibitory activity, mitotic disruption by inhibiting microtubule formation and inhibition of cellulose synthesis.

Abstract
Twenty-eight 9- to 14 years old boys from divorced families were compared with twenty-six 9- to 14 years old boys from two-parent families. Californian Child Q-Sort assessments (Block and Block 1980) were obtained from themselves, as well as from mother, father, a friend, and from the trained interviewer. Boys with divorced parents indicated more stress without showing it to others. They longed for appreciation from the others, showed lower self-esteem and more helplessness, but not more dissocial behavior. Supportive representation of their mother correlated positively with ego-resiliency and self-esteem, and negatively with helplessness, while others did not seem to notice the boys' helplessness. They indicated less dissocial and more social behavior, they were more sensitive and had better relations with other children. Supportive representation of fathers was beneficial only for the control group. The data correspond to differences in quality of narrative language published previously. They are discussed from an attachment theory perspective.

Abstract
The genes SAM1 and SAM2 encoding the two different methionine adenosyltransferases (EC 2.5.1.6) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae were used as templates to generate specific DNA-probes. This heterologous mixture of DNA-probes was hybridized under low stringency hybridization conditions to a Corynebacterium glutamicum colony-array representing the complete genome. Subsequently, one genomic fragment was isolated which contained the C. glutamicum methionine adenosyltransferase gene metK (1.224 kb). When overproduced in Escherichia coli, MetK (44.2 kDa) of C. glutamicum had methionine adenosyltransferase activity. In addition, overexpression of metK in C. glutamicum led to an increased intracellular S-adenosylmethionine concentration. The metK transcript was detected by reverse transcription PCR in C. glutamicum cells in the exponential growth phase but not in the stationary phase.

Abstract
The growth-inhibiting effects of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) at high concentration and the synthetic auxins 7-chloro-3-methyl-8-quinolinecarboxylic acid (quinmerac), 2-methoxy-3,6-dichlorobenzoic acid (dicamba), 4-amino-3,6, 6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram), and naphthalene acetic acid, were investigated in cleavers (Galium aparine). When plants were root treated with 0.5 mM IAA, shoot epinasty and inhibition of root and shoot growth developed during 24 h. Concomitantly, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase activity, and ACC and ethylene production were transiently stimulated in the shoot tissue within 2 h, followed by increases in immunoreactive (+)-abscisic acid (ABA) and its precursor xanthoxal (xanthoxin) after 5 h. After 24 h of treatment, levels of xanthoxal and ABA were elevated up to 2- and 24-fold, relative to control, respectively. In plants treated with IAA, 7-chloro-3-methyl-8-quinolinecarboxylic acid, naphthalene acetic acid, 2-methoxy-3,6-dichlorobenzoic acid, and 4-amino-3,6,6-trichloropicolinic acid, levels of ethylene, ACC, and ABA increased in close correlation with inhibition of shoot growth. Aminoethoxyvinyl-glycine and cobalt ions, which inhibit ethylene synthesis, decreased ABA accumulation and growth inhibition, whereas the ethylene-releasing ethephon promoted ABA levels and growth inhibition. In accordance, tomato mutants defective in ethylene perception (never ripe) did not produce the xanthoxal and ABA increases and growth inhibition induced by auxins in wild-type plants. This suggests that auxin-stimulated ethylene triggers ABA accumulation and the consequent growth inhibition. Reduced catabolism most probably did not contribute to ABA increase, as indicated by immunoanalyses of ABA degradation and conjugation products in shoot tissue and by pulse experiments with [(3)H]-ABA in cell suspensions of G. aparine. In contrast, studies using inhibitors of ABA biosynthesis (fluridone, naproxen, and tungstate), ABA-deficient tomato mutants (notabilis, flacca, and sitiens), and quantification of xanthophylls indicate that ABA biosynthesis is influenced, probably through stimulated cleavage of xanthophylls to xanthoxal in shoot tissue.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The two radioiodinated fatty acid analogs 15-(para-131 I-phenylpentadecanoic acid (pPPA) and 15-(ortho-131I-phenyl)-pentadecanoic acid (oPPA) are isomers with individually different routes in lipid metabolism but with near equal transport kinetics into tissue. METHODS Normal adult male Wistar rats (n = 79) and those with liver cell damage from adriamycin treatment (n = 84) received 1.48- 1.85 MBq 131I-pPPA or 131I-oPPA (specific activity, 33.3-46.3 GBq/microM) into the jugular vein. At 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 20 min, livers of up to five animals per group were examined for total tracer uptake and tracer incorporation into various lipid fractions. RESULTS Uptake of both isomers into the total liver plateaued at about 2 min; the ratio oPPA/pPPA in normal liver averaged 2.63 and was significantly higher than the average ratio of 1.50 after adriamycin treatment. This fall in ratio was mainly due to an increase of pPPA uptake. Significant differences of the respective ratios were found in the plateau for the phospholipids (9.7 versus 3.0), cholesterol (2.4 versus 0.7) and triglycerides (2.0 versus 0.4). CONCLUSION The dual-tracer technique with pPPA and oPPA promises to be clinically useful for the diagnosis of liver disease by imaging the ratios of tracer uptake in the total liver and by in vitro analysis of the uptake ratio in serum triglycerides.

Abstract
This cross-cultural study examined continuity in parent-child relationships from infancy to middle childhood in a sample of German families. Connections were traced between individual differences in a composite of markers of the parent-child attachment relationship system (including classification of the infant via the Strange Situation and parent via the Adult Attachment Interview and for mothers' ratings of sensitivity) and later parent-child communications. Findings within the mother-child relationship revealed modest links between the composite and communications and were taken to suggest that the divergent fields of attachment and family communication research are addressing similar underlying relationship processes involving the interplay between relatedness and autonomy. Further findings revealed that the composite modestly predicted variability in children's competence in forming friendships and that differences in concurrent child-mother communications significantly added to and possibly mediated these effects. Results were interpreted as supporting a process model of development, whereby adaptation is influenced by both current and past relationship status.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate, if the the combined treatment of compression stockings and drug treatment with oxerutins (O-(beta-hydroxyethyl)-rutosides, Venoruton) provides additional benefit for patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) compared to compression treatment alone. Oxerutins belong to the group of oedema protective agents and possess anti-exudative and membrane protective activity. A total of 133 female patients with CVI grade II participated in this double-blind, randomised, multi-centre, parallel-group study with two treatment groups. The whole study lasted for 19 weeks, and consisted of a one week placebo run-in phase, 12 weeks treatment phase, followed by a 6 weeks treatment-free follow-up period. All patients received a basis compression therapy that consisted of standard compression stockings. In order to standardise initial fitting of stockings in this multi-centre setting, stockings were fitted after one week of standard diuretics starting at baseline and then stockings were worn for the following 11 weeks. Patients were randomised to receive oxerutins (2 x 500 mg daily) or matching placebo. Leg volumes (water displacement) and associated subjective symptoms (visula analogue scale) were measured during a placebo run-in period at enrolment (week - 1) and half a week later (week - 1/2), at baseline week 0), at 4, 8, 12 weeks on treatment, and again after a 3- and 6-weeks treatment-free follow-up. The primary efficacy criterion, the area under the baseline from week 0 to week 18 (AUB0-18) of leg volume changes, as measurement of the global change of leg oedema during the study, resulted in a superior reduction of -5589 ml.d for the combined treatment with oxerutins compared to -2101 ml.d for placebo (p = 0.012). The mean change of leg volume compared to baseline after 12 weeks of treatment was -63.9 ml for stockings and oxerutins, and -32.9 ml for the patients who received stockings and placebo (p < 0.05). Oxerutins showed a prolonged effect in the follow-up phase compared to placebo, with mean AUB values for week 12 to week 18 of -1769 ml.d versus -133 ml.d (p < 0.01). The study demonstrated that the combined therapy of compression stockings and drug treatment with oxerutins is significantly superior in reducing leg oedema resulting from chronic venous insufficiency compared to compression treatment alone.

The rolA gene of the TL-DNA of Agrobacterium rhizogenes Ri-plasmid plays a major role in establishing the hairy root syndrome in transgenic plants. Transgenic tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L.) expressing constitutively the rolA gene under the transcriptional control of the 35S RNA promoter show pronounced phenotypical alterations. P35S-rolA transgenic tobacco plants are characterized by stunted growth, dark green wrinkled leaves with an altered length-to-width ratio, condensed influorescences, retarded onset of flowering, a reduced number of flowers and shortened styles. To investigate whether the pleiotropic alterations of growth and development are linked to an altered hormonal status we have compared the immunoreactive content of indole-3-acetic acid, cytokinins, abscisic acid, gibberellin and the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) of seedlings and different tissues of P35S-rolA transgenic plants, transgenic plants expressing the rolA gene under control of its own phloem-specific promoter and wild-type plants. Multiple tissue-specific alterations of phytohormone concentrations are the consequence of rolA gene activity. Changes of phytohormonal content can explain part of the rolA-induced phenotypic alterations. Most strikingly, in young and fully developed leaves of rolA and P35S-rolA transgenic clones a 40-60% reduction of immunoreactive gibberellin A1 was found, as compared to wild-type leaves. Treatment of wild-type tobacco plants with inhibitors of gibberellin biosynthesis phenotypic alterations similar to those of rolA transgenic plants. This suggests that the reduction of gibberellic acid content is indirectly but causally involved in rolA-induced alterations of stem elongation and planar leaf blade growth.

Abstract
Radioiodine labelled 17-iodo-heptadecanoic acid (IHA) is used for non-invasive study of myocardial metabolism in coronary heart disease and cardiomyopathy. Yet in the interpretation of in vivo myocardial tracer kinetics, it is controversial whether the intracellular degradation of IHA or the removal of iodide across cellular membranes is the rate-limiting step in iodide release from the myocardium. In five patients undergoing coronary sinus catheterization, a mixture of about 40 kBq of [123I] NaI was injected into the left coronary artery. During the following 15-min period, frequent blood samples were taken from the aorta and the coronary sinus. In the aqueous phase of the venous blood, 14CO2 and inorganic 131I appeared nearly in parallel, with a peak time of 4-5 min. Moreover, as shown by the AV difference, there was no significant back diffusion of IHA and no significant non-specific deiodination detectable over the period of observation. There was myocardial retention of inorganic iodide (123I) injected into the left coronary artery. The data strongly support the premise that lipid turnover through beta-oxidation is the rate-limiting step in the externally measured release of iodide after IHA injection, provided that recirculating inorganic radioactive iodide is corrected for. In addition, 15 volunteers were studied using [11C]palmitic acid and [123I]IHA using PET and dynamic planar camera scintigraphy with iodide correction. There was no significant difference between the mean values of the elimination half-times, and also no significant correlation between half-times of both fatty acids for single individuals.

Abstract
15-(ortho-123I-phenyl)-pentadecanoic acid (oPPA) in contrast to the para-isomer pPPA has a prolonged retention in the normal human myocardium. Following qualitative evaluation, a semi-quantitative analysis of oPPA-SPECT is presented in 52 patients (41 with coronary artery disease (CAD) and 11 normals). Data were compared to the results of coronary angiography (CAD patients). Up to 220 MBq 123I-labelled oPPA were injected intravenously after overnight fasting and bicycle exercise. Four minutes later SPECT acquisition (180 degrees technique) was started. In 15 patients a second dose of oPPA was injected 2.5 h later and the study was repeated under rest conditions. Compared to our qualitative analysis the semi-quantitative approach revealed a lower sensitivity of 76% for the detection of CAD (global, stenoses greater than 50%) (specificity was not analysed because the normal patients served as the control group for the calculation of normal values). Because the sensitivity does not exceed that of 201Tl-SPECT or MIBI-SPECT, oPPA is not recommended for the detection of CAD, but it may serve for the evaluation of myocardial viability in ischaemic regions.

Abstract
The rolC gene of Agrobacterium rhizogenes, which drastically affects growth and development of transgenic plants, codes for a cytokinin-beta-glucosidase. Indeed, rolC protein expressed in Escherichia coli as a fusion protein hydrolyses cytokinin glucosides, thus liberating free cytokinins. Furthermore, beta-glucosidase activity present in E. coli extracts expressing the rolC protein was inhibited by affinity-purified antibodies specific for the rolC protein. Finally, rolC proteins expressed in transgenic plants were shown to be responsible for cytokinin-beta-glucosidase activity. Morphological and phytohormonal analysis, performed on transgenic plants that are somatic mosaics for the expression of the rolC gene, extend and confirm our interpretation that the developmental, physiological and morphological alterations caused by rolC expression in transgenic plants are primarily due to a modification of the cytokinin balance. These observations shed new light on the control of growth and differentiation in plants by growth factors.

Abstract
The light reflexion rheography is described as non-invasive investigation method for the venous system. The basic principle of the method and its applications are explained as well as its evaluation and the peculiarities which are to be taken into consideration thereby are discussed in detail. The comprising evaluation of the haemodynamic changes in chronic diseases of the veins is particularly elucidated by the method with regard to an improvable chronic venous insufficiency and to the differentiation between epifascial and subfascial pathological changes on the venous system. The method is suitable for the differentiation of the possible forms of therapy as well as for the examination of the result of the treatment. By means of this method a judgment of the efficacy of preparations for vein diseases is not possible. At the earliest the technique is comparable with the bloody measurement of the venous pressure-phlebodynamometry. Its smaller exactness should be compensated by triple measurement. The possibilities of errors as well as the advantages of the method and its areas of application preferred are discussed in detail. The light reflexion rheography is nowadays together with the ultrasound Doppler diagnostics a technique of diagnostics which should be present in every phlebologic practice.

Abstract
We present our experience with 105 patients in whom percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was performed in 112 stenosed or occluded supra-aortic arteries. Symptoms of cerebrovascular and/or vertebrobasilar insufficiency were present in 104 of the 105 patients. The angioplasty was successful in 35 stenoses of the internal carotid artery, 2 stenoses of the common carotid artery, 1 stenosis of the external carotid artery, 15 stenoses of the vertebral artery, 3 stenoses of the innominate artery and 44 stenoses of the subclavian artery. There were only 4 minor-complications (2 haematomas, 1 transient ischemic attack, 1 small thrombus of the internal carotid artery which was detected by 111-indium platelet scintigraphy and treated by thrombendarterectomy before the appearance of neurological symptoms). All patients were symptom free after angioplasty. During the observations period of 3 to 109 months (average 58 months) there were only two cases with re-stenosis after subclavian angioplasty. The results of more than 700 personal and international published percutaneous transluminal angioplasties of supra-aortic arteries are presented. The results suggest that angioplasty of supra-aortic arteries is an effective method. On strict definition of the indications, the complication rate for angioplasty of the supra-aortic arteries is not likely to be higher than that for operative treatment.

Cytokinins of the urea and adenine type induced leaf abscission in young cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) plants in the following order of activity: N-phenyl-N'-1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-ylurea (thidiazuron) >> N-phenyl-N'-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)urea > isopentenyladenine >/= 6-benzyladenine > zeatin = dihydrozeatin > kinetin. It is suggested that ethylene production is implicated in this response because it was stimulated by the compounds in cotton leaf discs with nearly the same effectiveness. Moreover, similar to thidiazuron (JC Suttle [1985] Plant Physiol 78: 272-276), isopentenyladenine-induced defoliation was inhibited by aminoethoxyvinylglycine, and the effect was restored by 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid.

Abstract
The human myocardium retains oPPA as opposed to pPPA. Therefore turnover of oPPA was compared with that of pPPA in rat hearts and in man, the latter by using substrates double-labeled with 123/131I and 14C. Moreover, substrate binding to coenzyme-A was tested in vitro. In rats, oPPA remained mainly in the pool of free fatty acids, as opposed to pPPA, which was metabolized by mitochondrial beta-oxidation. Binding to coenzyme-A at maximum was 62% for oPPA, 81% for pPPA and 90% for palmitic acid. In man, after i.v. and intracoronary injection of double-labeled oPPA, the two radionuclides reappeared together in venous blood and in coronary sinus respectively, in an unchanged ratio but at a significantly lower rate than with pPPA. It can be concluded that oPPA is bound to coenzyme-A and is retained in the cytosolic lipid pool, while pPPA is metabolized by mitochondrial beta-oxidation. A dual-tracer application of oPPA and pPPA has the potential of being a specific probe for the function of the carnitine shuttle.

Furthermore, the alternative and supplementary prescription of physiotherapy and movement cure depending on findings is dealt with.

Abstract
In the chronic venous insufficiency on the basis of a primary varicosis the occlusion plethysmography of the veins is a suitable remedy in the positioning trial before and after a combined phlebectomy to determine the capacity of the venous part of the circulation on the lower extremity. In altogether 160 patients the functional capacity of the venous valves with the initial inclination to swelling St as well as the capacity of the venous vascular system on the calf and the ankle were established by the determination of the maximal venous capacity Vmax. It could be proved that particularly in stage III of the chronic venous insufficiency the haemodynamically most effective efficacy can be achieved by an operation of the varices.

Abstract
From a variety of undifferentiated plant cell suspensions, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid-dependent cells of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. Spanners Allzweck) produced large quantities of ethylene. The maximum rate was about 1 nanomole x gram fresh weight(-1) x hour(-1) during the exponential growth phase. The action of various compounds known to interfere with ethylene formation in plant tissue was studied in sunflower cell suspensions. The influence on ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid (ACC), and N-malonyl-ACC (MACC) levels suggested that the final steps in ethylene synthesis resemble those of other plant systems. This makes sunflower cells suitable for analyzing the effects of biologically active compounds on cellular ethylene biosynthesis. In particular, plant growth retardants of the norbornenodiazetine and triazole type inhibited ethylene production of sunflower cells. On the other hand, the ACC level was considerably elevated while that of MACC did not change significantly. It is assumed that the conversion of ACC to ethylene catalyzed by the ethylene-forming enzyme was influenced.

Abstract
The methodical fundaments as well as the technical solutions for a technique of the computerized analysis of non-invasively registered peripheral arterial pulse curves are demonstrated. Hereby a quantitative analysis of the pulse curves using new and significant evaluation parameters is performed as well as a reference to the probability diagnosis for the total estimation of the pulse curve is given. The technique is realised in form of a mobile microcomputer measuring place and allows an automatic registration, evaluation documentation and recording of rheograms and pulse oscillograms, respectively immediately at the patient's bed and is suited for a broad application in the angiological preliminary and special diagnostics.

Abstract
The effects of the growth retardants tetcyclacis, a norbornenodiazetine, and LAB 150 978, a dioxanylalkenyl triazole, on seedling growth and endogenous levels of phytohormone-like substances in Glycine max L. cv Maple Arrow were studied. The levels of phytohormone-like substances in the root and in the various shoot tissues were analyzed by immunoassay. After seed treatment with both compounds, shoot growth was reduced more intensively than root growth. Both compounds decreased, on a fresh weight basis, the amount of various immunoreactive gibberellins when compared with the levels in control plants, especially in the shoot tip. Likewise, the growth retardants lowered the levels of abscisic acid-like material, particularly in the primary leaf, the epicotyl and the root. In contrast, the levels of trans-zeatin-riboside and dihydrozeatin-riboside-type cytokinins were considerably elevated by the growth retardants, mainly in the primary leaf, epicotyl, and hypocotyl. On the other hand the level of isopentenyladenosine-like material was less influenced. In general, the immunoreactive 3-indoleacetic acid content in the different plant parts was changed only slightly. It is assumed that besides their effect on gibberellin content both compounds interfere directly or indirectly with the regulation of the endogenous levels of abscisic acid and cytokinins. This might be seen as an additional mode of action of growth retardants explaining some side effects on developmental processes of treated plants, e.g. delayed senescence and enhanced chlorophyll concentration in the leaves.

Abstract
Over a period of 5 years, 51 stenoses of brachiocephalic arteries were successfully dilated, and one subclavian occlusion recanalized in 42 patients. Among 24 patients there were 21 stenoses of the internal carotid artery, two stenoses of the common carotid artery, two stenoses of the innominate artery, five stenoses at the origin of the vertebral artery, and four stenoses of the subclavian artery. There were 17 patients who had stenoses of the subclavian artery. In 12 cases several arteries were affected. In 9 patients multiple (2-3) stenoses in these supraaortic arteries were dilated. In 4 cases bilateral dilatation of internal carotid arteries was performed. There were transient, minor complications in 2 patients.

Abstract
The plant growth retardant tetcyclacis inhibits cell division growth in rice suspension cultures at concentrations above 10(-6) M. Tracer experiments with rice cells revealed that tetcyclacis reduced the incorporation of mevalonic acid into terpenoids after 30 min, the uptake of leucine, uridine and thymidine after 2 h and their incorporation into the corresponding macromolecules after 3-7 h. The changes in membrane permeability concluded to have been caused by an influence on phytosterol biosynthesis are probably also the explanation for alterations of tetcyclacis-treated cells in the content of macro- and microelements.As shown by immunoassay, tetcyclacis did not modify the levels of endogenous gibberellins (Grossmann et al. 1985), cytokinins and indole acetic acid during a growth cycle of 15 d. However, a clear rise in the abscisic acid (ABA) level occurred during the first 5 d of treatment. In untreated cells such a rise coincided only with the aging of the cell culture in the stationary growth phase. Investigations of the cell polypeptide pattern using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the ABA increase following tetcyclacis treatment seems not to be a consequence of advanced cell aging.

Abstract
The present paper is a review of 37 successful catheter dilatations of supra-aortic vascular stenoses. There were sixteen patients with a total of 21 stenoses of the internal carotid, vertebral artery or common carotid artery and sixteen patients with subclavian stenoses. Amongst the patients with stenoses of the cerebral vessels, there were ten with multiple lesions and six with a single stenosis. Three patients had successful dilatations of bilateral stenoses. The indications, technique, and complications of catheter dilatation of lesions of the cerebral vessels are described and discussed.

Abstract
Cell division in cell suspension cultures can be completely blocked by the growth retardant tetcyclacis at a concentration of 10(-4) mol l(-1). In rice cells it has been demonstrated that the growth inhibition can be completely overcome by application of cholesterol independent of the duration of pretreatment with tetcyclacis. In suspension cultures of maize and soybean, too, the effect of tetcyclacis on cell division was neutralized by adding cholesterol. Other plant sterols, stigmasterol, campesterol and sitosterol were active in a decreasing order. Modifications in the cholesterol perhydro-cyclopentanophenanthrene-ring system indicate that the hydroxyl group at C-3 and the double bond between C-5 and C-6 in ring B are required for the activity. In contrast, gibberellic acid as well as ent-kaurenoic acid could not compensate retardant effects. Likewise, tetcyclasis did not change the level of gibberellins in rice cells as shown by radioimmunoassay. Thus, it is concluded that in cell suspension cultures sterols play a more important role in cell division than gibberellins.
