Abstract
This report provides an extensive review of the experimental programme of direct detection searches of particle dark matter. It focuses mostly on European efforts, both current and planned, but does it within a broader context of a worldwide activity in the field. It aims at identifying the virtues, opportunities and challenges associated with the different experimental approaches and search techniques. It presents scientific and technological synergies, both existing and emerging, with some other areas of particle physics, notably collider and neutrino programmes, and beyond. It addresses the issue of infrastructure in light of the growing needs and challenges of the different experimental searches. Finally, the report makes a number of recommendations from the perspective of a long-term future of the field. They are introduced, along with some justification, in the opening overview and recommendations section and are next summarised at the end of the report. Overall, we recommend that the direct search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector target should be given top priority in astroparticle physics, and in all particle physics, and beyond, as a positive measurement will provide the most unambiguous confirmation of the particle nature of dark matter in the Universe.

Abstract
Therapeutic education is defined as all the tools taught to patients with the aim of improving their compliance to treatments. In a chronic disease, such as cystic fibrosis, this education should be done during the first months of child's life with the collaboration of parents and then gradually given to children from the age of 6 until they are autonomous in the management of their treatment during adolescence. The tools used for therapeutic education should be playful, varied and adapted to the child's development, while respecting a standard for competences. In this article, we will define the main approaches of therapeutic education in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Selecting broiler chickens for ultimate pH of breast muscle: analysis of divergent selection experiment and phenotypic consequences on meat quality, growth, and body composition traits. Abstract
Genetic parameters for ultimate pH of pectoralis major muscle (PM-pHu) and sartorius muscle (SART-pHu); color parameters L*, a*, b*; logarithm of drip loss (LogDL) of pectoralis major (PM) muscle; breast meat yield (BMY); thigh and drumstick yield (TY); abdominal fat percentage (AFP); and BW at 6 wk (BW6) were estimated in 2 lines of broiler chickens divergently selected for PM-pHu. Effects of selection on all the previous traits and on glycolytic potential, pectoralis major muscle pH at 15 min postmortem, curing-cooking yield (CCY), cooking loss (CL), and Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) of the PM muscle were also analyzed after 5 generations. Strong genetic determinism of PM-pHu was observed, with estimated h(2) of 0.57 ± 0.02. There was a significant positive genetic correlation (rg) between PM-pHu and SART-pHu (0.54 ± 0.04), indicating that selection had a general rather than a specific effect on energy storage in skeletal muscles. The h(2) estimates of L*, a*, and b* parameters were 0.58 ± 0.02, 0.39 ± 0.02, and 0.48 ± 0.02, respectively. Heritability estimates for TY, BMY, and AFP were 0.39 ± 0.04, 0.52 ± 0.01, and 0.71 ± 0.02, respectively. Our results indicated different genetic control of LogDL and L* of the meat between the 2 lines; these traits had a strong rg with PM-pHu in the line selected for low ultimate pH (pHu) value (pHu-; -0.80 and -0.71, respectively), which was not observed in the line selected for high pHu value (pHu+; -0.04 and -0.29, respectively). A significant positive rg (0.21 ± 0.04) was observed between PM-pHu and BMY but not between PM-pHu and BW6, AFP, or TY. Significant phenotypic differences were observed after 5 generations of selection between the 2 lines. The mean differences (P < 0.001) in pHu between the 2 lines were 0.42 and 0.21 pH units in the breast and thigh muscle, respectively. Breast meat in the pHu+ line exhibited lower L* (-5 units; P < 0.001), a* (-0.22 units; P < 0.001), b* (-1.53 units; P < 0.001), and drip loss (-1.6 units; P < 0.001) than in the pHu- line. Breast meat of the pHu+ line was also characterized by greater CCY (+6.1 units; P < 0.001), lower CL (-1.66 units; P < 0.01), and lower WBSF after cooking (-5.1 units; P < 0.001) compared to the pHu- line. This study highlighted that selection based on pHu can be effective in improving the processing ability of breast meat and reducing the incidence of meat quality defects without affecting chicken growth performance.

Abstract
CONTEXT Some studies have highlighted the difficulty for physicians to evaluate patient's ability to consent to bio-medical research in the elderly population. The University of California Brief Assessment of Capacity to Consent (UBACC) is a rapid questionnaire to assess the ability to consent, previously validated among schizophrenic patients. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the accuracy of the UBACC scale, French version, to determine the capacity to consent to biomedical studies of older people with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer Disease (AD). DESIGN A prospective validation study between September 2008 to November 2011. SETTING A Memory clinic. PATIENTS We included 61 subjects in a memory clinic who had already consented to participate to a biomedical research and had signed a consent form. Those subjects, who had memory impairment, had a comprehensive neuro-psychological (including Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE)/30), clinical, biological assessment and brain imagery during day-care hospital. They were classified as MCI or AD patients. Control group included patients' caregivers without memory complaints and a normal comprehensive neuro-psychological assessment. INTERVENTION AND MEASUREMENTS The consent form was once again explained to the subjects by a physician who subjectively evaluated if subjects had understood the study. Then, the 10 questions of the French version of the UBACC scale (max score 20) were asked to the participants. This scale evaluates the understanding of the study's aim, risks and benefits. A comparison was made between subjective assessment and the UBACC score. RESULTS The physician considered that 18/61 patients (2 MCI and 16 AD) had not understood. These ones had a lower UBACC score (Score/20 (SD) [range]: 7.56 (3.03) [0-12] versus 17.72 (2.68) [13-28], p<0.001), a lower MMSE (Score/ 30 (SD): 21.1 (5.9) versus 27.3 (2.9); p<0.001) and were older (age (years old) 80.8 versus 76.6. p<0.0001) compared to those who had understood. Moreover, all the patients who had not understood had an UBACC score ≤ 12. The administration time was accurate in this population (<10 minutes). CONCLUSION The UBACC scale, in its French version, was accurate to assess capacity to consent in an older, cognitively impaired population.

Abstract
Plant infection by pathogens generates various forms of symptoms. Most of them have been described as soon as they become visible, whereas preceding, discrete signs during incubation are poorly or not understood. In Vitis vinifera, esca-related pathogenic fungi inhabit living trunk wood and induce the so-called apoplexy, a sudden wilting of leaves within a few days. To further understand the apoplexy expression, the period preceding symptom appearance was investigated by following physiological and molecular markers associated with photosynthetic mechanisms and stress responses. Within the week preceding symptoms, drastic physiological alterations of photosynthesis were registered in pre-apoplectic vines, as revealed by a decrease in gas exchange, changes in chlorophyll fluorescence, and repression of photosynthesis-related genes. In the meantime, expression of defense-related genes was induced and amplified during symptom expression. Water-stress-related genes were specifically investigated because water transport may be impeded by clogging xylem vessels due to esca-causing fungi. Neither of the tested water-stress-related genes was affected in pre-apoplectic grapevine leaves whereas these genes were downregulated in drying leaves. Our results suggest that, during incubation of esca apoplexy, grapevine perceives some signals (likely fungi-originated toxins) and reacts by reducing photosynthesis and triggering defense mechanisms.

Abstract
PURPOSE This paper examines and reviews studies on the efficacy of computer-based cognitive intervention programmes in the elderly affected by Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI patients are at higher risk to progress to dementia. Recent effort has been made to slow the cognitive decline and delay the onset of dementia in this population. METHOD MEDLINE sources were searched with the following subject headings: computer-based cognitive intervention, cognitive stimulation, cognitive training, aging, elderly, cognitive impairment. Selected studies were quality assessed and data extracted by two reviewers. RESULTS Several studies reported encouraging results on cognitive interventions programmes as a means to improve cognitive abilities and emotional states and to decrease subjective memory complaints in MCI patients. CONCLUSION Though both traditional and computer-based cognitive intervention programmes seem to be effective, the computer-based ones present more advantages: 1) they could individualize the programme tailored to the patient's neuropsychological pattern and needs. 2) they permit the user to make an immediate objective comparison with data collected earlier and thus help in setting up a systematic training plan by providing instant value-free feedback. 3) they offer a possibility of a widescale dissemination.

Abstract
ABSTRACT To further understand the development of esca disease in grapevine, its physiological impact on plants grown in the vineyard was characterized, focusing mainly on photosynthesis. For this purpose, the state of the photosynthetic apparatus was evaluated in symptomatic and asymptomatic leaves in esca-infected grape plants, and wood carbohydrates stored in annual canes were assayed. In symptomatic leaves, esca greatly affected grapevine physiology. Foliar symptoms were associated with both stomatal closure and alteration of the photosynthetic apparatus as revealed by (i) a decrease in CO(2) assimilation, transpiration, and a significant increase in intercellular CO(2) concentration; (ii) a strong drop in both the maximum fluorescence yield and the effective Photosystem II quantum yield; and (iii) a reduction of total chlorophyll but a stable carotenoid content. On symptomatic canes, all these variables were affected more on leaves with symptoms than without symptoms, suggesting a gradation in photosynthesis disruptions in the plant according to the degree of symptom severity. In addition, canes of symptomatic plants had reduced carbohydrate reserves during the winter rest, whether they exhibit symptoms or not. The following year, the lower pool of reserves may contribute to a significant decrease in plant development, as well as a global loss in plant vigor.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a major phytoalexin in grapevine but its synthesis in response to phytopathogen attack decreases with grape berry ripening. A chimeric gene combining an alfalfa PR 10 promoter and Vst1 (Vitis stilbene synthase 1) gene was introduced into the genome of 41B rootstock. Transgenic plants were analysed for resveratrol production in leaves infected with Botrytis using an in vitro test. Among the 50 transgenic lines analysed, some exhibited a production lower than the non-transgenic control, but others accumulated resveratrol from 5-100-fold. Moreover, in the latter clones, symptoms were highly reduced in response to infection. These results were a good indication that the combination of a pathogen-inducible promoter and a defence gene may increase tolerance against fungi in grapevine. The efficacy of this approach should be further tested by experiments conducted in the vineyard.

Abstract
A fraction containing the mannoproteins released during fermentation from the winemaking strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Maurivin PDM, was able to reduce the visible protein haze in white wine. This fraction of haze protective mannoprotein material (HPM) could be recovered by either ultrafiltration or ethanol precipitation. The kinetics of the release of both mannose- and glucose-containing polymers during the growth cycle of PDM were determined as a guide to the release of HPM. Active HPM was first detected in the culture supernatant when the cells were exponentially growing. HPM was also released into the medium under an environment simulating winemaking conditions by PDM cells during fermentation as well as during storage on yeast lees. Since the amounts of HPM released during fermentation are greater than those subsequently extracted from the cell wall, fermentation would be a more viable procedure than extraction from yeast cells for the commercial production of HPM. Yeast invertase, a mannoprotein with haze protective activity, was used as a model substrate to investigate the mechanism of haze protection. Invertase was found to reduce visible turbidity but not prevent protein precipitation. Invertase itself did not precipitate but remained soluble in the wine. On the basis of these observations, we propose that the mechanism of haze protection may be one of competition between HPM and wine proteins for unknown wine component(s), the latter being required for the formation of large insoluble aggregates of denatured protein. As the available concentration of these components decreases, due to the presence of HPM, the particle size of the haze decreases and thus visible turbidity declines.

Abstract
1. The roux plumage sex-linked recessive gene may be used for early sexing of Japanese quail in crossbreeding production systems with wild-type and roux lines. However, associated effects of the gene on carcase and meat composition need to be assessed. 2. Quail carcases from pure Line K males and females (100% K), a heavy meat line which was used as the recipient line for the introgression of the roux gene, and from same-age roux or wild-type females from the second generation of introgression (75% K) were dissected. The effects of sex, line and plumage colour on carcase components and on protein and lipid contents of various tissues were estimated. 3. Expected sex differences in carcase weights were obtained, with marginally higher values for females. However, weights of parts and carcase yield (ratio of empty carcase weight without head, neck and feet over live body weight) were similar for both sexes in pure Line K which had a 68% carcase yield. Lipid contents in leg meat were higher in males (3.1%) than in females (2.7%). 4. The roux gene did not seem to have any major impact on carcase parts or composition. However, in roux birds, leg skin was marginally higher in lipids and pectoralis major lower in proteins than in wild-type ones.

Abstract
After two generations of introgression of the sex-linked recessive roux color mutation into a commercial broiler Japanese quail line with wild-type plumage, growth, carcass, egg laying, and reproduction of birds were evaluated and compared for all types of birds produced (considering sex, line, and plumage). Usual sex differences were obtained for BW, with larger values in females and 5% sexual dimorphism. Weights were larger also in the pure commercial line, which had a higher hatching rate (HR) than the introgressed birds at 17 to 19 wk of age. Roux plumage was significantly associated with 3% lower BW and 30% less abdominal fat (AF) pad. Egg production was not influenced by the roux mutation, but egg weight (EW) was 2% lower. Characteristics associated with the roux gene are similar to those reported for the albino mutation, except for AF, which was not tested in albino quail. The similarity of the pleiotropic effects might result from some modification that the two mutations induce in an early step of a metabolic pathway involved both in coloration and in growth. From a practical breeding standpoint, the roux gene appears to be a interesting candidate gene for auto-sexing in quail production.

Abstract
The Radio Communication Project (RCP) in Nepal is an ongoing, theory-based, multimedia reproductive health campaign which began in 1995. It consists of two entertainment-education radio serials (a soap opera for the general public and a dramatized distance education serial for health workers), additional radio spot advertisements and promotions, and complementary print materials. This paper examines impact data from a variety of sources, including a pre- and postpanel survey of currently married women (N = 1905), three waves of clinic-based observations of client-provider interactions (N = 240 per wave) and client exit interviews (N = 240 per wave), and 2 years of clinic service statistics, in order to draw inferences about the separate and combined effects of the RCP components. The study found increased health worker interpersonal interaction skills, improved quality of client-provider interactions, increased client self-efficacy in dealing with health workers, improved client attitudes toward health services and toward the practice of family planning, increased adoption of family planning, and increased family planning service utilization, all attributable to the RCP. The panel data allowed statistical control of the influence of predisposing factors before the campaign on postcampaign ideation and behavior. The effect of the RCP on contraceptive behavior was largely indirect through its influence on ideation. Implications for the design of integrated, multimedia, entertainment-education campaigns and integrated evaluation designs are discussed.

Abstract
The effects of dietary protein and zinc restrictions on Heligmosomoides polygyrus were compared following primary and challenge infection in female BALB/c mice fed either control (24%), marginal (7%) or low (3%) protein combined with either high or low zinc (60 or 3 mg Zn/kg diet). Dietary protein restriction (3%) resulted in significantly lower body weight gain. As well, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) significantly decreased with decreasing dietary protein level. However, neither plasma albumin concentration nor relative thymus or spleen weights were reduced. Marginal zinc deficiency was confirmed by significantly lower tibia and liver zinc concentration, but food intake, body weight gain, relative thymus and spleen weights, and alkaline phosphatase activity were not altered. On day 29 post-primary infection, worm burdens were significantly higher in mice fed either marginal or low protein and in mice fed a low zinc diet, while parasite egg output was significantly higher in mice fed both low protein and low zinc diet. Immune status was compromised in mice fed low protein (significantly lower serum IgG1 and lower eosinophilia), and in mice fed low zinc diet (significantly lower eosinophilia). Early in the infection, IgE titres were elevated in mice fed low protein or low zinc, but IgE titres declined to levels lower that the control diet groups after 14-21 days. On day 29 post-challenge infection, worm burdens and parasite egg output were significantly higher in mice fed low protein, whereas the other group had expelled almost all parasites. Dietary restriction had no effect on IgE. Significantly reduced serum IgG1 titres and eosinophilia in mice fed 3% protein supported the view that low dietary protein but not low zinc increased host susceptibility to H. polygyrus by compromising host immune function following reinfection in immunized mice.

Abstract
We assessed diets in 16 Dene/Métis communities in the Canadian Arctic. We described nutrient intakes and identified nutrients at risk among adult Dene/Métis, evaluated the influence of traditional food on diet quality, and examined the direction of dietary change by comparing intergenerational and between-community differences in dietary intake. Diet varied according to sex, age and community. Nutrients of possibly inadequate intake (irrespective of subject sex, age or community) included calcium, vitamin A and folic acid. Dietary fiber intake was also of concern. Traditional food (animals and plants harvested from the local environment) was consumed on 65. 4% of interview days; on those days intakes of iron, zinc and potassium were higher (P < 0.05) and those of sodium, fat, saturated fat and sucrose were lower (P < 0.05) than on days when market food only was consumed. In this population, the shift away from traditional food towards a diet composed exclusively of market food was characterized by an increase (P < 0.05) in absolute energy intake and an increase (P < 0.01) in the relative contributions of carbohydrate (particularly sucrose), fat and saturated fat. This pattern of change calls for initiatives to document the current health status of this population and to prevent potential negative health consequences of dietary change.

Energy restriction and severe zinc deficiency influence growth, survival and reproduction of Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Nematoda) during primary and challenge infections in mice. Abstract
The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the impact of severe zinc deficiency on the establishment, growth, survival and reproduction of Heligmosomoides polygyrus in the laboratory mouse, during both primary and challenge infection protocols, and (2) to determine whether the observed effects resulted from zinc deficiency per se, or from the accompanying energy restriction. Three diet groups were used: zinc-sufficient (Zn+:60 mg zinc/kg diet), zinc-deficient (Zn-:0.75 mg zinc/kg diet) and energy restricted (ER:60 mg zinc/kg diet pair fed to Zn- mice). Neither Zn- nor ER influenced the establishment of the parasite during a primary infection. However, both significantly influenced the early development of the parasite. The proportion of adult worms recovered 9 days post-infection (p.i.) was highest in Zn- mice, intermediate in ER mice and lowest in Zn+ mice. Worms were also distributed more distally in the intestine of the Zn- mice and worm survival was highest in Zn- mice, intermediate in ER mice and lowest in Zn+ mice at both 4 and 5 weeks p.i. Although the length of female worms was reduced in Zn- mice, neither per capita fecundity nor egg viability was affected by zinc deficiency. Energy restriction, on the other hand, significantly reduced worm fecundity at 5 weeks post-primary infection, but had no effect on egg viability. Zinc concentration of adult H. polygyrus was similar among dietary groups. The effects of zinc deficiency and energy restriction were also investigated 4 and 5 weeks after a challenge infection. Whereas strong host resistance was evident in Zn+ and ER mice, based on comparison of worm numbers between challenged mice and primary infection controls, no evidence of resistance was detected in Zn- mice. As in the primary infection, female worms were shorter in Zn- mice than in ER and Zn+ mice, and energy restriction but not zinc deficiency significantly affected per capita fecundity. However, in contrast to the primary infection, ER mice had elevated rather than reduced fecundity. This study demonstrates a complex interaction between H. polygyrus and zinc and energy restriction, and highlights the importance of controlling for reduced food intake in nutrition-infection studies.

Abstract
The production of H2O2 by cells in cold paraformaldehyde-fixed frozen sections of inflammatory lesions was histochemically demonstrated by incubating them with diaminobenzidine (DAB) for 2 to 6 h. Catalase (150 micrograms/ml, about 1400 U/ml) inhibited the reaction, indicating that H2O2 was required to produce the chromogenic DAB product. Granulocytes (PMNs and eosinophils) were the main types of cells stained by the DAB reaction. Positive staining of macrophages was less frequent. The H2O2 was produced by metabolic enzymes that were still active after cell death and mild fixation. An atmosphere of 95 to 100% oxygen enhanced the specific DAB reaction, and an atmosphere of 100% nitrogen eliminated it. The DAB histochemical reaction to detect H2O2 requires the presence of peroxidases to produce the colored reaction product. Within our tissue sections, such peroxidases were evidently present in excess, because addition of low concentrations of H2O2 significantly increased the reaction product. Although some of the H2O2 produced by the granulocytes may have been derived from the dismutation of superoxide (O2-), the NADPH oxidase pathway for O2- formation did not seem to be involved: NADPH oxidase, a rather labile enzyme, should not be active after mild fixation, and diphenyleneiodonium (100 microM), an inhibitor of flavine-requiring NADPH oxidase, did not inhibit the reaction. Reactive nitrogen intermediates were also not involved, because NG-monomethyl-L-arginine and NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, inhibitors of nitric oxide synthetase, did not appreciably inhibit the reaction. We conclude that stable, non-flavine-requiring oxidases, possibly cyclooxygenases or lipoxygenases, produced the H2O2 measured histochemically by our DAB reaction. These studies were made on tissue sections of acute dermal inflammatory lesions produced in rabbits by the topical application of 1% sulfur mustard [bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide] in methylene chloride. Both intact PMNs and disintegrating PMNs in the base of the crust produced H2O2. Despite the production of H2O2 and the presence of peroxidase activity, no tissue damage was seen microscopically near the H2O2-producing cells, which indicates that the tissues are well protected by the antioxidants present in this self-limiting inflammatory reaction.

Abstract
Four 9-kDa small extracellular proteins produced by embryogenic cultures in the absence of auxin have been purified from the extracellular medium of grapevine somatic embryo cultures through cation-exchange chromatography and hydrophobic-interaction chromatography. The partial amino-acid sequences reflect high similarities between the four proteins as well as with the sequences established for carrot, spinach, millet and maize nonspecific lipid-transfer proteins. All these sequences show conservation of three cysteines at positions 4, 14 and 30-32, as well as glycine, valine, tyrosine and lysine residues at positions 5, 7, 17 and 37, respectively. In-vitro lipid-transfer assays reveal that the four proteins catalyze the transfer of phosphatidylcholine from liposomes towards mitochondria with an efficiency similar or higher than that of a purified maize lipid-transfer protein.

Abstract
Sedentary subjects were submitted to repeated concentric isokinetic strength training protocols separated by a 50-day detraining period. Peak torque output of the quadriceps muscle group increased by 54% after the first ten-week training protocol. No significant changes in mean skeletal muscle fiber area were observed while a significant increase in percent fiber type and percent fiber area was noticed for type IIa fibers. The activities of the enzymes hexokinase, malate dehydrogenase, 3-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase, and oxoglutarate dehydrogenase were also increased significantly. Fifty days without training induced a significant decline in peak torque output. All the enzymes that responded to the first training protocol maintained their elevated activities over the detraining period except for the enzyme oxoglutarate dehydrogenase. A second training protocol administered to the same subjects following the 50-day inactivity period did not result in any significant increase in maximum torque output and fiber area. It is concluded that the isokinetic strength training protocol used can increase the functional capacity of skeletal muscle, but this effect does not appear to be related to skeletal muscle fiber hypertrophy.

Abstract
Eighteen young male subjects, aged 18-30 yr, with maximal oxygen intake (VO2max) varying between 36 and 80 ml.kg-1.min-1, were studied. Between 20 and 120 min after injection, tolerance to iv glucose (20 g/m2) was not affected by VO2max but the insulin response was very significantly reduced in the better trained subjects. 125I-insulin binding to monocytes was found to be greater in the best trained subjects. Simple correlation analysis indicates that both VO2max and adiposity are related to plasma glucose and plasma insulin levels as well as to 125I-insulin binding. Because VO2max is negatively correlated to percent of body fat, a partial correlation analysis was made. Results indicate that the differences observed in athletes with regard to glucose and insulin levels and 125I-insulin binding are related to reduced adiposity rather than to enhanced VO2max.

Abstract
Forty young male adults, aged 18-30 yr, with maximal oxygen intake (VO2 max) varying between 35 and 76 ml-kg-1-min-1 were studied. The fasting subjects were perfused for 15 min with saline and thereafter for 30 min with norepinephrine (0.1 mug/kg per min). Blood variables were determined at the end of slaine perfusion, at 15 and 30 min during norepinephrine perfusion and 15 min after the end of NE perfusion. Trained subjects are characterized by lower basal plasma glucose and insulin concentration. NE perfusion produced a larger increase in plasma glucose in the trained subjects. Levels of insulin in the postperfusion period were smaller in the trained group. Serum free fatty acids (FFA) and glycerol increased less in the trained subjects during NE perfusion and this difference persisted in the post-perfusion period. During NE perfusion, blood lactate increased only in the nontrained subjects. Initial heart rate and blood pressure were lower in trained subjects but, during NE perfusion, elevated levels of blood pressure and decreased levels of heart rate were comparable in both groups. Because of similarities in responses to exercise and to NE in trained subjects, the results of the present study suggest a possible role for NE in exercise training.
