The environmental effects of microplastics and microplastic derived dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments: A review

Currently, microplastics (MPs) have ubiquitously distributed in different aquatic environments. Due to the unique physicochemical properties, MPs exhibit a variety of environmental effects with the coexisted contaminants. MPs can not only alter the migration of contaminants via vector effect, but also affect the transformation process and fate of contaminants via environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs). The aging processes may enhance the interaction between MPs and co-existed contaminants. Thus, it is of great significance to review the aging mechanism of MPs and the influence of coexisted substances, the formation mechanism of EPFRs, environmental effects of MPs and relevant mechanism. Moreover, microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) may also influence the elemental biogeochemical cycles and the relevant environmental processes. However, the environmental implications of MP-DOM are rarely outlined. Finally, the knowledge gaps on environmental effects of MPs were proposed.

Photochemical behaviors of sludge extracellular polymeric substances from bio-treated effluents towards antibiotic degradation: Distinguish the main photosensitive active component and its environmental implication

Activated sludge extracellular polymeric substances (ASEPSs) comprise most dissolved organic matters (DOMs) in the tail water. However, the understanding of the link between the photolysis of antibiotic and the photo-reactivity/photo-persistence of ASEPS components is limited. This study first investigated the photochemical behaviors of ASEPS's components (humic acids (HA), hydrophobic substances (HOS) and hydrophilic substances (HIS)) separated from municipal sludge's EPS (M-EPS) and nitrification sludge's EPS (N-EPS) in the photolysis of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The results showed that 60% of SDZ was removed by the M-EPS, but the effect in the separated components was weakened, and only 24% - 39% was degraded. However, 58% of SDZ was cleaned by HOS in N-EPS, which was 23% higher than full N-EPS. M-EPS components had lower steady-state concentrations of triplet intermediates (3EPS*), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) than M-EPS, but N-EPS components had the highest concentrations (5.96 ×10-15, 8.44 ×10-18, 4.56 ×10-13 M, respectively). The changes of CO, C-O and O-CO groups in HA and HOS potentially correspond to reactive specie's generation. These groups change little in HIS, which may make it have radiation resistance. HCO-3 and NO-3 decreased the indirect photolysis of SDZ, and its by-product N-(2-Pyrimidinyl)1,4-benzenediamine presents high environmental risk.

Investigation on ozone formation mechanism and control strategy of VOCs in petrochemical region: Insights from chemical reactivity and photochemical loss

To investigate disparities in VOCs pollution characteristics, O3 generation activity, and source apportionment outcomes resulting from photooxidation, online monitoring of 106 VOCs was conducted in Jinshan District, Shanghai from April to October 2020. The observed VOCs concentrations (VOCs-obs) were 47.1 ppbv and 59.2 ppbv for clear days (CD) and O3-polluted days (OPD), respectively. The increase in daytime concentrations of alkenes is a significant factor contributing to the enhanced atmospheric photochemical activity during the OPD period, corroborated by VOCs-loss, ozone formation potential (OFP), propy-equiv concentration, and LOH. The sensitivity analysis of O3-NOx-VOCs indicated that O3 formation was in a transitional regime towards NOx-limited conditions. The results of positive matrix factorization (PMF) demonstrated that refining and petrochemicals (20.8-25.0 %), along with oil and gas evaporation (15.6-16.7 %) were the main sources of VOCs concentrations. Notably, source apportionment based on VOCs-obs underestimated the contributions from sources of reactive components. It is worth highlighting that the sunlight impact & background source was identified as the major contributor to LOH (21.6 %) and OFP (25.3 %), signifying its significant role in O3 formation. This study reiterates the importance of controlling reactive VOC components to mitigate O3 pollution and provides a scientific foundation for air quality management, with emphasis on priority species and controlling sources.

Urban canopy height ozone distribution in a Chinese inland city: Effects of anthropogenic NO emissions

With the increase of urban building height, people pay more and more attention to the characteristics of pollutants in urban canopy height. This study combined the generalized additive model (GAM) and the observation-based model (OBM) to explore the vertical characteristics and drivers of ozone (O3) based on meteorology tower (200 m) data to quantify the effects of factors and photochemical reactions on O3 formation at different heights. The F values of GAM reflect the importance of each factor, indicating that NO (F is 33.99 in the peak season, 36.72 in the non-peak season) was the dominant driver of O3 and was more important in the lower layer (20-116 m). Temperature (F is 35.42) was the main contributor to O3 pollution in the peak season, especially for O3 in the upper layer (116-200 m). The net O3 production rate in the peak season was 1.47 times that in the non-peak season due to strong photochemical reactions and meteorological conditions. And the net O3 production rate decreased sharply with increasing height in the two seasons. Less net O3 production in the upper layer was accompanied by a higher O3 mixing ratio, which indicated that there was more background O3 in the upper layer. OBM model results showed that the reaction between hydroperoxyl radical (HO2) and NO was the primary contribution pathway, accounting for 54.00 % and 57.50 % in the peak and non-peak seasons, respectively. O3 formation was highly sensitive to VOCs, while NOx reduction could have positive or negative effects on O3 depending on the levels of hydroxyl radical (OH). The understanding of the formation mechanism of O3 and the influence of NO on O3 provides insights into the importance of anthropogenic activities at urban canopy heights in shaping the vertical structure of O3.

A comprehensive observation on the pollution characteristics of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) in Beijing, China

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is a typical secondary photochemical product in the atmospheric environment with significant adverse effects on human health and plant growth. In this study, PAN and other pollutants, as well as meteorological conditions were observed intensively from August to September in 2022 at a typical urban sampling site in Beijing, China. The mean and maximum PAN concentrations during the observation period were 1.00 ± 0.97 ppb and 4.84 ppb, respectively. Severe photochemical pollution occurred during the observation period, with the mean PAN concentration about 3.1 times higher than that during the clean period. There was a good positive correlation between O3 and PAN, and their correlation was higher during the O3 exposure period than that during the clean period. The simulated results by box-model coupled with the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM v3.3.1) showed that the O3-related reactions were the largest sources of OH radicals during O3 exposure period, which was conducive to the co-contamination of PAN and O3. Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) and methylglyoxal (MGLY) were the largest OVOCs precursors of peroxyacetyl radicals (PA), with the contributions to the total PA generated by OVOCs about 67 % - 83 % and 17 % - 30 %, respectively. The reduction of emissions from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and solvent usage has the highest reduction effect on PAN and O3, followed by the control of gasoline vehicle exhaust emissions. This study deepens the understanding of the PAN photochemistry in urban areas with high O3 background conditions and the impact of anthropogenic activities on the photochemical pollution. Meanwhile, the findings of this study highlight the necessity of strengthening anthropogenic emissions control to effectively reduce the co-contamination of PAN and O3 in Beijing in the future.

Methyl nitrate as a byproduct in advanced water treatment systems: Liquid chromatographic determination method and cause of formation

Neutral low-molecular-weight organics such as methyl nitrate that can readily pass through reverse osmosis (RO) membranes employed in potable water reuse facilities attract interest owing to public health considerations. In this study, a novel determination method based on high-performance liquid chromatography, online photochemical conversion to peroxynitrite, and luminol chemiluminescence detection was developed for methyl nitrate measurement in treated water. The maximum photochemical conversion efficiency of methyl nitrate to peroxynitrite was found to be 6.5% using a 222-nm excimer lamp. The calibration curve for the developed method was linear between 1.0 × 10-9 and 1.0 × 10-7 M, and the limit of detection was 0.3 nM (0.03 μg/L) given an injection volume of 200 μL. The methyl nitrate concentrations in RO permeate from reclaimed wastewater and product water after subsequent treatment by a UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation process (AOP) were 2.2 and 22.5 nM (0.17 and 1.7 μg/L), respectively. UV irradiation of RO permeate in the laboratory using a low-pressure Hg lamp confirmed the formation of methyl nitrate in the permeate in the absence of H2O2 and residual chloramines. This chemiluminescent detection method for methyl nitrate will promote a greater understanding of the origin and formation of this treatment byproduct in reclaimed wastewater.

Toxicity of fresh and aged anthropogenic smoke particles emitted from different burning conditions

There is substantial evidence that photochemical reactions in the atmosphere cause physico-chemical transformation of combustion smoke, but how this processing modifies potential health effects in exposed populations is not well understood. Here we utilized a new approach to simulate photochemical aging of anthropogenic smoke emissions (a mixture of plastic, plywood, and cardboard smoke) from two different burning conditions (smoldering vs. flaming) and investigated their adverse outcomes associated with mutagenic activity and the relative potencies of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Aging resulted in increased oxygenated volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions but largely degraded particle-bound PAH components in the smoke. Chemical transformation during aging was more dramatic for flaming versus smoldering smoke. Due to the PAH degradation, mutagenicity of the aged smoke from flaming combustion was much lower (up to 4 times) than that of the fresh smoke on per-particle mass basis. However, on the basis of particle emitted per fuel mass burned, the aged and fresh smoke particles exhibited similar mutagenic activities, which were up to 3 times higher for smoldering versus flaming smoke emissions. Similarly, the PAH toxicity equivalent (PAH-TEQ) of the aged smoldering smoke was 3 times higher than that of the aged flaming smoke particles, suggesting that some PAHs (e.g., indeno[c,d]pyrene and benzo[b]fluoranthene) in the smoldering smoke were more photochemically stable during aging. These findings increase understanding of the evolution of smoke emitted at different burning conditions and the role of photochemical transformations on mutagenicity and PAH-induced toxicity.

Sources-oriented contributions to ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation potential based on initial VOCs in an urban area of Eastern Asia

Over the past decades, the pollution of ozone (O₃) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the atmosphere has become a major concern worldwide due to their adverse effects on human health, air quality and climate. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are crucial precursors of O₃ and SOA, but identifying the primary sources of VOCs that contribute to the formation of O₃ and SOA has been challenging due to the rapid consumption of VOCs by oxidants in the air. To address this issue, a study was conducted in a Taipei urban area in Taiwan, where the hourly data of 54 VOC species were collected from March 2020 to February 2021 detected by Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations (PAMS). The initial mixing ratios of VOCs (VOCs_ini) were determined by combining the observed VOCs (VOCs_obs) and the consumed VOCs resulting from photochemical reactions. Additionally, the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) were estimated based on VOCs_ini. The OFP derived from VOCs_ini (OFP_ini) was found to exhibit a strong correlation with O₃ mixing ratios (R² = 0.82), whereas the OFP obtained from VOCs_obs did not show such a correlation. Isoprene, toluene and m,p-xylene were the top three species contributing to OFP_ini, while toluene and m,p-xylene were the top two contributors to SOAFP_ini. Positive matrix factorization analysis revealed that biogenic, consumer/household products, and industrial solvents were the major contributors to OFP_ini in four seasons, and SOAFP_ini mostly came from consumer/household products and industrial solvents. This study highlights the importance of considering photochemical loss caused by different VOCs reactivity in the atmosphere when evaluating OFP and SOAFP. Moreover, it emphasizes the need to prioritize controlling the sources emitting the dominant VOC precursors of O₃ and SOA to effectively alleviate the scenarios of elevated O₃ and particulate matter.

Divergent summertime surface O3 pollution formation mechanisms in two typical Chinese cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Fenwei Plain

Recently, severe summertime ozone (O₃) pollution has swept across most areas of China, especially the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region and Fenwei Plain. By focusing on Beijing and Yuncheng, which are two typical cities in the BTH region and the Fenwei Plain, we intended to reveal the neglected fact that they had disparate emission features and atmospheric movements but suffered from similar high-O₃ pollution levels. Field observations indicated that Yuncheng had lower volatile organic compound (VOC) and NO_x concentrations but higher background O₃ levels. The model simulation verified that both photochemical reactions and net O₃ generation were stronger in Beijing. Ultimately, faster net O₃ generation rates (8.4 ppbv/h) plus lower background O₃ values in Beijing and lower net O₃ generation rates (6.2 ppbv/h) plus higher background O₃ values in Yuncheng caused both regions to reach similar O₃ peak values in July 2020. However, different O₃ control measures were appropriate for the two cities according to the different simulated O₃-VOCs-NO_x responses. Additionally, as surface O₃ levels are greatly affected by the ongoing O₃ production/depletion process that occurs in three dimensions, exploring the effects of spatially distributed O₃ on surface O₃ should be high on the agenda in the future.

Migration of terephthalate from scraps of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in water and artificial seawater

We report the migration of terephthalate and some low molecular weight organic compounds from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) scraps in Milli-Q water and artificial seawater (ASW). The photochemical processes and the subsequent dark reactions were investigated using PET scraps obtained from postconsumer bottles of commercial non‑carbonated mineral water. Concentrations of terephthalate exponentially increased with irradiation time, reaching approximately 6-8 μmol L^-1 in ASW after 80 h irradiation. The photochemical migrations of compounds related to terephthalate were also observed. Concentrations of terephthalate and related compounds reached higher concentrations in ASW than in Milli-Q water. After 80 h irradiation, two dark experiments were conducted: one on the solutions after irradiation without PET scraps, and the other on photochemically damaged PET scraps. In ASW in the dark without PET scraps, the terephthalate concentration increased, and concentrations of other compounds related to terephthalate also changed. The results suggested that terephthalate was generated by hydrolytic reaction in dark ASW from the scission products of PET which were generated during the irradiation of PET scraps. Photochemically damaged PET scraps released terephthalate and related compounds in the dark. The half-life of the photo-irradiated PET scraps in the dark is approximately 205 years. Our results show that PET bottles in marine environments can continuously release terephthalate and other low molecular weight organic compounds during the day at the sunny surface, at the dark ocean floor, and during the night.

Atmospheric chemical processes of microcystin-LR at the interface of sea spray aerosol

Microcystins are the most toxic toxins released by cyanobacteria and they have adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and even human health. Although the removal and detoxification of microcystins in various water bodies have been extensively studied, the interaction mechanism and reaction process of microcystins once they enter the atmosphere are largely unknown, especially at the organic-enriched sea spray aerosol (SSA) interface. Herein, using the surface technique of Langmuir trough coupled in-situ infrared reflection-absorption spectra, we studied the interfacial behavior of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in artificial seawater containing humic acid and typical surfactants in the presence or absence of UV-irradiation. Zwitterionic 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC) and anionic stearic acid (SA) were chosen as typical film-forming species, results obtained from the surface pressure-area isotherms showed that MC-LR caused greater expansion of the DSPC monolayer. The comparable results of MC-LR in DSPC/SA-containing systems indicated that the interaction ability was closely related to the monolayer molecular structure and was regulated by electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, the presence of humic acid (HA) could enhance the interaction between microcystin and monolayer molecules. UV-irradiation experiments showed that the photosensitized reaction greatly promoted the removal of microcystin embedded in the SSA surface compared with the direct photolysis effect in the absence of HA. These findings highlight that the toxic effects of microcystins after entering the atmosphere may be weakened by photochemical reactions.

Photoinduced evolution of optical properties and compositions of methoxyphenols by Fe(III)-carboxylates complexes in atmospheric aqueous phase

The changes in optical properties and chemical compositions of methoxyphenols, which acted as an important aromatic compound from the biomass burning, were investigated in the presence of Fe(III)-carboxylates under aqueous phase conditions. The light was confirmed to be a key factor for stimulating the reaction of methoxyphenols and Fe(III)-carboxylates. The photoinduced evolution of optical properties of methoxyphenols was dependent on various factors, including irradiation intensity, types of carboxylates, dissolved oxygen and pH. The changes in the mass absorption efficiency at 306 nm (MAE₃₀₆) positively relied on irradiation intensity and dissolved oxygen. The acceleration effects of carboxylates on the decreases in MAE₃₀₆ of methoxyphenols followed the order of oxalate > citrate > malonate. The change amplitude of MAE₃₀₆ decreased with an increasing pH (3.5-9), while that of the mass absorption efficiency at 364 nm (MAE₃₆₄) increased with pH ranging from 3.5 to 7. The compositional evolutions of methoxyphenols by the photochemical aging were analyzed with the attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), confirming the decrease of CO groups and the increase of O-H and C-O groups. The photochemical reaction pathways of methoxyphenols with Fe(III)-carboxylates were proposed according to optical properties and compositions measurements.

Non-Leaching, Rapid Bactericidal and Biocompatible Polyester Fabrics Finished with Benzophenone Terminated N-halamine

Pathogenic bacteria can proliferate rapidly on porous fabrics to form bacterial plaques/biofilms, resulting in potential sources of cross-transmissions of diseases and increasing cross-infection in public environments. Many works on antibacterial modification of cotton fabrics have been reported, while very few works were reported to endow poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics with non-leaching antibacterial function without compromising their innate physicochemical properties though PET is the most widely used fabric. Therefore, it is urgent to impart the PET fabrics with non-leaching antibacterial activity. Herein, a novel N-halamine compound, 1-chloro-3-benzophenone-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (Cl-BPDMH), was developed to be covalently bonded onto PET fabrics, rendering non-leaching antibacterial activity while negligible cytotoxicity based on contact-killing principle. Bacterial was easily adhered to Cl-BPDMH finished PET fabrics, and then it was inactivated quickly within 10 s. Furthermore, the breaking strength, breaking elongation, tearing strength, water vapor permeability, air permeability and whiteness of Cl-BPDMH finished PET fabrics were improved obviously compared to raw PET fabrics. Hence, this work developed a facile approach to fabricate multifunctional synthetic textiles to render outstanding and rapid bactericidal activity without compromising their physicochemical properties and biocompatibility.

Nanosecond Photochemical Reaction (nsPCR) for Enhanced Mass Spectrometric Identification, Quantification, and Visualization of Metabolites and Neuropeptides

Small-molecule (e.g., metabolite) and low-abundance neuropeptide analyses by mass spectrometry (MS) represent important research directions and have witnessed tremendous growth and developments during past decades. With innate advantages of MS and gentle nature of soft ionization techniques including electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), profiling and visualization of these bioactive metabolites and neuropeptides have undergone technological advancements that can be applied to real biological systems, although numerous challenges still exist. We herein present a rapid and efficient strategy to improve both metabolite and neuropeptide analysis, the nanosecond photochemical reaction (nsPCR)-enabled fast chemical derivatization. Amine-directed chemoselectivity facilitates the rapid tagging on amine-containing metabolites and neuropeptides, resulting in improved detection sensitivity. Additionally, the nsPCR generates a localized pH jump zone and enables localized thermophoresis at nanosecond timescale which benefits on-demand matrix removal during MALDI-MS identification and visualization of low-abundance biomolecules. A step-by-step nsPCR experimental protocol is introduced in detail herein for both spot analysis and imaging analysis, followed by suggestions for data analysis to ensure successful application of the nsPCR strategy.

Fiber-optic sample illuminator design for the observation of light induced phenomena with transmission electron microscopy in situ: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy

Antibacterial photodynamic therapy is a promising treatment for problematic infections caused by bacteria and fungi. Despite its undoubted effectiveness, the ultrastructural mechanism of microbial death remains not fully described and distinct organisms respond to the treatment with different efficacy. For this reason, it was decided to try imaging the process using the in situ transmission electron microscopy method. To conduct an observational experiment, the microscope was significantly modified. Liquid cell methods were used, electron doses and their influence on the sample were estimated, and a fiber-optic sample illuminator was designed and built. The modifications allowed for the light-induced characterization of photosensitizer-bacteria interaction. Microscope modification is a promising platform for further studies of light-induced phenomena in both life and material science.

Light-induced in situ transmission electron microscopy: Novel approach for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy imaging

The novel approach for imaging of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy processes presented in this work is based on transmission electron microscopy methods. With the use of liquid cell, illumination system, and lowered electron dose the successful light-induced in-situ observations on Staphylococcus aureus encapsulated with methylene blue were performed. Results showed that with specified imaging parameters it is possible to conduct reliable research on bacteria in electron microscope despite the unfavorable damaging effect of the highly energetic electron beam used for imaging. This approach differs from the common methods, as it provides direct observations of the processes occurring upon light illumination. The effects obtained with the proposed method are very promising and may serve to answer why different microorganisms respond to the therapy differently.

Photoenhanced heterogeneous reaction of O3 with humic acid: Focus on O3 uptake and changes in the composition and optical property

Heterogeneous photochemical reaction of O₃ with humic acid (HA) under simulated sunlight was performed using a flow tube reactor coupled to an O₃ analyzer at ambient pressure. It was confirmed that light significantly enhanced the uptake of O₃ on HA. The initial uptake coefficient (γ_i) and the steady-state uptake coefficient (γ_ss) of O₃ under irradiation increased by 1.6 and 3.8 times compared to those in the dark, respectively. The γ_i and γ_ss on HA varied in the range of 0.76-2.77 × 10^-5 and 1.50-9.55 × 10^-6, respectively, which were dependent on various environmental factors including HA mass, total irradiance, initial O₃ concentration, O₂ content, temperature, relative humidity (RH) and HA solution pH. Both γ_i and γ_ss showed linear dependence on the total irradiance (0-2.07 × 10¹⁶ photons/(cm²⋅s)) of the light source, and increased with the HA mass (0-3.2 μg/cm²), temperature (278-298 K) and HA solution pH (4.0-9.6). However, they showed negative correlations with the initial O₃ concentration and O₂ content. The γ_i remained constant in the RH range of 7%-60%, while γ_ss exhibited the maximum value at RH = 20%. During the ozonization of HA under irradiation, some functional groups were consumed, including CH₂, CH₃, aromatic CC, OH, CO, COOH and COO^-. HA aged by O₃ exhibited a decrease in the mass absorption efficiency (MAE) and a small increase in the absorption Ångström exponent between 300 and 600 nm wavelength (AAE_300,600), which was ascribed to changes in the composition of HA during the photochemical ozonization process.

Singlet oxygen production abilities of oxidated aromatic compounds in natural water

Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is well known to be formed through energy transfer from excited state organic matters to O₂, playing an important role in the transformations of contaminants. However, the contribution of small oxidated aromatic compounds (OACs) to the production of ¹O₂ in surface water is unclear. In this study, 28 OACs were selected to investigate the correlations between their photochemical production abilities of ¹O₂ and molecular structures. Our results showed that the steady-state concentrations and quantum yields of ¹O₂ (Φ_1O2) generated by OACs were in the range of 7.0 × 10^-14-1.4 × 10^-12 M and 2.2 × 10^-4-4.7 × 10^-2, respectively, indicating that the photochemical production abilities of ¹O₂ by OACs varied greatly with types and positions of functional groups on the molecule. More importantly, the observed photochemical production of ¹O₂ was most notable in cases of molecules containing -OCH₃ group and benzoquinone. A good quantitative structure-property relationship model was established between ¹O₂ producing ability, energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (E_LUMO) and the most positive net charge of hydrogen atoms (qH⁺) of OACs. In addition, the role of ¹O₂ produced by 2, 6-dimethoxy-1, 4-benzoquinone, the OAC with the highest Φ_1O2, in the photodegradation of organic contaminants was validated by the enhanced degradation of atorvastatin under simulated sunlight, suggesting that OACs ubiquitously existed in surface water may greatly affect the fate and ecological risks of organic contaminants.

Ratiometric fluorescence determination of hydrogen peroxide using carbon dot-embedded Ag@EuWO4(OH) nanocomposites

A sheet-like carbon dot-embedded Ag@EuWO₄(OH) luminescent nanoprobe was successfully developed for assaying hydrogen peroxide. Firstly, the carbon dot-embedded EuWO₄(OH) nanosheets were prepared in a Eu(NO₃)₃·6H₂O-(NH₄)₁₀H₂(W₂O₇)₆·xH₂O-CS(NH₂)₂ hydrothermal synthetic system. Subsequently, the carbon dot-embedded EuWO₄(OH) was functionalized by Ag nanoparticles using an in situ photochemical deposition strategy upon ultraviolet light irradiation. Taking advantage of the dual emissions of the luminescence from carbon dots and characteristic red transitions of Eu³⁺ ions in the integrated system, the carbon dot-embedded Ag@EuWO₄(OH) luminescent composites exhibit ratiometric fluorescence responsive activity towards hydrogen peroxide. The luminescent intensity ratio of Eu³⁺ (614 nm) to carbon dots (389 nm) shows a polynomial function with changing hydrogen peroxide concentration. The corresponding detection limit is 60 μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 (S/N = 3) implying the potential use of the carbon dot-embedded Ag@EuWO₄(OH) as nanoprobe. The method was applied to the quantification of H₂O₂ in real samples with satisfactory results. Graphical abstract A carbon dot-embedded Ag@EuWO₄(OH) luminescence ratiometric probe was successfully prepared through hydrothermal method and in situ photochemical deposition strategy. The luminescence intensity ratio of Eu³⁺ to carbon dots shows synergistic luminescence response activity towards H₂O₂ with detection limit of 60 μM.

Insight into the photochemistry of atmospheric oxalate through hourly measurements in the northern suburbs of Nanjing, China

Oxalate-iron is an integral part of the photochemical system in the atmosphere. Here, we combined high-resolution online observations and laboratory simulations to discuss the distribution of oxalate and oxalate-iron photochemical system in Nanjing atmosphere at the molecular level. The results show that the oxidation state of iron in the oxalate-iron photochemical system changes significantly and regularly. Among them, Fe (II)/Fe (III) is 3.82 during the day and 0.76 at night. At the same time, Cl^- may accelerate the generation of hydroxyl radicals in the system and promote the photooxidation rate of oxalate. Oxalate can be converted into formate (C1) and acetate (C2) in the photochemical system, but <4% of degraded oxalate is converted, which means that the photochemical system may not be the main source of formate and acetate in the atmosphere. Besides, the ratio of C1/C2 < 1 in the conversion is opposite to the ratio of C1/C2 > 1 in the general secondary conversion, which means that not all ratio of C1/C2 in the photochemical pathway is >1. These results are beneficial for us to understand the effect of the oxalate-iron photochemical system on the distribution of oxalate in the atmosphere, and also help us to analyze the conversion of organics in the atmospheric aqueous phase.

Influence of urban forest on traffic air pollution and children respiratory health

This study aimed to assess the air quality, the prevalence of child respiratory morbidity, and the association between them, in urban areas where concentrations of pollutants are expected to be below national limits. The monitoring of PM_10, NO₂ and O₃ was performed in five schools, during 9 months. Information about respiratory diseases and associated symptoms were collected from each student using a questionnaire based on the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. The PM₁₀ and NO₂ concentrations were higher at points closer to roads and avenues with intense vehicle flow and lower at the point closer to a park, with dense vegetation. All sampling points exceeded the annual limit established by WHO for PM₁₀. Some maximum PM₁₀ concentrations recorded close to the road was six times higher than the international limit. In total, 340 answered questionnaires were collected (68% response rate). Respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, sneezing, running nose, tearing, and itchy eyes had positive and strong correlation to the primary pollutants (0.70 to 0.87), but the frequency of some symptoms was lower close to the urban forest. Therefore, our results confirm the importance of creating and maintaining green areas in urban space, considering all ecosystem services provided by them, especially the improvement of air quality. In addition, a continuous program to monitor and control atmospheric pollution is required in mid-sized counties located nearby important roads, with growing fleets of vehicles.

In situ surface modification on dental composite resin using 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine polymer for controlling plaque formation

Composite resins (CRs) are widely used as dental restorative materials for caries treatment. They cause problems of secondary caries since Streptococcus mutans stays in the dental plaque, which the surface exists and produces acidic compounds during metabolism. The dental plaque depositions are induced by the protein adsorption on the surface. Therefore, suppression of protein adsorption on the surface of the CRs is important for inhibiting the formation of plaque and secondary caries. In this study we developed a surface treatment to provide an antibiofouling nature to the CRs by chemical reaction with 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymers in the oral cavity during dental treatment. To carry out the photochemical reaction on the remaining polymerizable groups of CRs, we synthesized the MPC polymer with a polymerizable group in the side chain. The MPC polymer could bind on the surfaces of the CRs chemically under dental treatment procedures. The treated surface showed significant resistance to oral protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion even when the surface was brushed with a toothbrush. Thus, we concluded that the photochemical reaction of the MPC polymer with the CRs in the oral cavity was good for making an antibiofouling surface and preventing secondary caries.

Photochemical multivariate curve resolution models for the investigation of photochromic systems under continuous irradiation

We propose a multivariate curve resolution approach for the investigation of photochromic systems using UV-Visible spectroscopy. The incorporation of photochemical hard-models as constraints in multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) allows extracting reaction quantum yields in situations where a complete knowledge of the system is not available. We apply this approach to the study of the photochromism of CMTE (cis-1,2-dicyano-1,2-bis(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)ethene) under continuous monochromatic irradiation. The mechanism, involving 3 species and 2 reversible reactions, is written and translated into a kinetic constraint that can be applied to the concentration profiles within ALS. First, ambiguity of the solution obtained for photochemical model(s) is calculated and discussed for single set analysis. Multiset analysis is then proposed combining data obtained under different irradiation wavelengths to provide more reliable results. Finally, the photochemical reactivity of CMTE is widely unraveled, and some description of the mechanism observed under irradiation at 365 nm is given.

Inhalation of Simulated Smog Atmospheres Affects Cardiac Function in Mice

The health effects of individual criteria air pollutants have been well investigated. However, little is known about the health effects of air pollutant mixtures that more realistically represent environmental exposures. The present study was designed to evaluate the cardiac effects of inhaled simulated smog atmospheres (SA) generated from the photochemistry of either gasoline and isoprene (SA-G) or isoprene (SA-Is) in mice. Four-month-old female mice were exposed for 4 h to filtered air (FA), SA-G, or SA-Is. Immediately and 20 h after exposure, cardiac responses were assessed with a Langendorff preparation using a protocol consisting of 20 min of global ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion. Cardiac function was measured by index of left-ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and cardiac contractility (dP/dt) before ischemia. Pre-ischemic LVDP was lower in mice immediately after SA-Is exposure (52.2 ± 5.7 cm H₂O compared to 83.9 ± 7.4 cm H₂O after FA exposure; p = 0.008) and 20 h after SA-G exposure (54.0 ± 12.7 cm H₂O compared to 79.3 ± 7.4 cm H₂O after FA exposure; p = 0.047). Pre-ischemic left ventricular contraction dP/dt_max was lower in mice immediately after SA-Is exposure (2025 ± 169 cm H₂O/sec compared to 3044 ± 219 cm H₂O/sec after FA exposure; p < 0.05) and 20 h after SA-G exposure (1864 ± 328 cm H₂O/sec compared to 2650 ± 258 cm H₂O/sec after FA exposure; p = 0.05). In addition, SA-G reduced the coronary artery flow rate 20 h after exposure compared to the FA control. This study demonstrates that acute SA-G and SA-Is exposures decrease LVDP and cardiac contractility in mice, indicating that photochemically-altered atmospheres affect the cardiovascular system.

Stability and properties of Z-DNA containing artificial nucleobase 2'-O-methyl-8-methyl guanosine

We synthesized several DNA oligonucleotides containing one or several 2'-O-methyl-8-methyl guanosine (m⁸Gm) and demonstrated that these oligonucleotides not only stabilize the Z-DNA with a wide range of sequences under low salt conditions but also possess high thermal stability. Using artificial nucleobase-containing oligonucleotides, we studied the interaction of the Zα domain with Z-DNA. Furthermore, we showed that the m⁸Gm-contained oligonucleotides allow to study the photochemical reaction of Z-DNA.

Phototransformation of p-arsanilic acid in aqueous media containing nitrogen species

The effects of co-existing nitrogen species in surface water on the phototransformation of organoarsenical p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) have been investigated using a xenon lamp as a simulated solar light source. Significant enhancements of p-ASA phototransformation efficiency were observed in the presence of nitrate and nitrite, increasing with the concentration of these species and pH, whereas ammonia showed no obvious effect. The products, including inorganic arsenic species and organic derivatives, have been analyzed in order to reveal the phototransformation pathways. In the nitrate and nitrite systems, only small proportions of inorganic arsenic species were generated, with the majority of p-ASA being converted into other organoarsenical derivatives through hydroxylation, nitration, and nitrosation. Phototransformation of p-ASA in collected natural surface water was also observed. This work has implications for the phototransformation of p-ASA in nitrogen-contaminated surface water.

Insights into the formation of secondary organic carbon in the summertime in urban Shanghai

To investigate formation mechanisms of secondary organic carbon (SOC) in Eastern China, measurements were conducted in an urban site in Shanghai in the summer of 2015. A period of high O₃ concentrations (daily peak > 120 ppb) was observed, during which daily maximum SOC concentrations exceeding 9.0 μg/(C·m³). Diurnal variations of SOC concentration and SOC/organic carbon (OC) ratio exhibited both daytime and nighttime peaks. The SOC concentrations correlated well with O_x (= O₃ + NO₂) and relative humidity in the daytime and nighttime, respectively, suggesting that secondary organic aerosol formation in Shanghai is driven by both photochemical production and aqueous phase reactions. Single particle mass spectrometry was used to examine the formation pathways of SOC. Along with the daytime increase of SOC, the number fraction of elemental carbon (EC) particles coated with OC quickly increased from 38.1% to 61.9% in the size range of 250-2000 nm, which was likely due to gas-to-particle partitioning of photochemically generated semi-volatile organic compounds onto EC particles. In the nighttime, particles rich in OC components were highly hygroscopic, and number fraction of these particles correlated well with relative humidity and SOC/OC nocturnal peaks. Meanwhile, as an aqueous-phase SOC tracer, particles that contained oxalate-Fe(III) complex also peaked at night. These observations suggested that aqueous-phase processes had an important contribution to the SOC nighttime formation. The influence of aerosol acidity on SOC formation was studied by both bulk and single particle level measurements, suggesting that the aqueous-phase formation of SOC was enhanced by particle acidity.

Ozone from fireworks: Chemical processes or measurement interference?

Fireworks have been identified as one ozone source by photolyzing NO₂ or O₂ and are believed to potentially be important for the nighttime ozone during firework events. In this study, we conducted both lab and field experiments to test two types of fireworks with low and high energy with the goal to distinguish whether the visible ozone signal during firework displays is real. The results suggest that previous understanding of the ozone formation mechanism during fireworks is misunderstood. Ultraviolet ray (UV)-based ozone monitors are interfered by aerosols and some specific VOCs. High-energy fireworks emit high concentrations of particular matters and low VOCs that the artificial ozone can be easily removed by an aerosol filter. Low-energy fireworks emit large amounts of VOCs mostly from the combustion of the cardboard from fireworks that largely interferes with the ozone monitor. Benzene and phenol might be major contributors to the artificial ozone signal. We further checked the nighttime ozone concentration in Jinan and Beijing, China, during Chinese New Year, a period with intense fireworks. A signal of 3-8ppbv ozone was detected and positively correlated to NO and SO₂, suggesting a considerable influence of these chemicals in interfering with ambient ozone monitoring.

Bilirubin photoisomers in rhesus monkey serum

As rhesus monkeys exhibit physiological jaundice during the neonatal period, we used rhesus monkey serum to examine changes in bilirubin photoisomers. Bilirubin-rhesus monkey serum solution was irradiated with blue light-emitting diode, and changes in the absorbance and bilirubin fraction were compared with those in bilirubin- human serum albumin (HSA) and bilirubin-rat albumin solutions. The λ_max decreased with light irradiation. The mean production rate of cyclobilirubin IXα was 1.98, 199 and 0.76 × 10^-2/min in rhesus monkey serum, HSA and rat albumin, respectively. There was no significant difference between rhesus monkey serum and HSA. The (ZE)-bilirubin IXα/(ZZ)-bilirubin IXα ratio was 0.33, 0.45, and 0.10, respectively, differing significantly among the groups. The (EZ)-bilirubin IXα/(ZZ)-bilirubin IXα ratio was 0.020, 0.010, and 0.062, respectively, with no significant difference between rhesus monkey serum and HSA. The production rate of (EZ)-cyclobilirubin XIIIα(= (ZE)-cyclobilirubin XIIIα) was 0.73, 1.60, and 0.51 × 10^-2/min, respectively, with differing significantly among the groups. The (EZ)-bilirubin IIIα/(ZZ)-bilirubin IIIα ratio was significantly different among the groups at 0.20, 0.38, and 0.15, respectively. This is the first report demonstrating the photoisomerization of bilirubin in rhesus monkey serum and the animal with the same cyclobilirubin production rate as HSA.Rhesus monkeys may be used as an animal model for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in humans to evaluate the efficacy of phototherapy.

Typical winter haze pollution in Zibo, an industrial city in China: Characteristics, secondary formation, and regional contribution

Heavy haze pollution occurs frequently in northern China, most critically in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area (BTH). Zibo, an industrial city located in Shandong province, is often listed as one of the top ten most polluted cities in China, particularly in winter. However, no studies of haze in Zibo have been conducted, which limits the understanding of the source and formation of haze pollution in this area, as well as mutual effects with the BTH area. We carried out online and continuous integrated field observation of particulate matter in winter, from 11 to 25 January 2015. SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, and NH₄⁺ (SIA) and organics were the main constituents of PM_2.5, contributing 59.4% and 33.6%, respectively. With the increasing severity of pollution, the contribution of SIA increased while that of organics decreased. Meteorological conditions play an important role in haze formation; high relative humidity (RH) and low wind speed increased both the accumulation of pollutants and the secondary transition from gas precursors (gas-particle phase partitioning). Since RH and the presence of O₃ can indicate heterogeneous and photochemistry processes, respectively, we carried out correlation analysis and linear regression to identify their relative importance to the three main secondary species (sulfate, nitrate, and secondary organic carbon (SOC)). We found that the impact of RH is in the order of SO₄^2- > NO₃^- > SOC, while the impact of O₃ is reversed, in the order of SOC > NO₃^- > SO₄^2-, indicating different effect of these factors on the secondary formation of main species in winter. Cluster analysis of backward trajectories showed that, during the observation period, six directional sources of air masses were identified, and more than 90% came from highly industrialized areas, indicating that regional transport from industrialized areas aggravates the haze pollution in Zibo. Inter-regional joint prevention and control is necessary to prevent further deterioration of the air quality.

Deciphering the influence of column chemistry and mass spectrometry settings for the analyses of geometrical isomers of L-chicoric acid

Resolving the chemo-diversity of plant extract samples is an essential step for in-depth analyses of natural products which often exhibit promising biological activities. One of the challenges in this endeavor has been the confident differentiation of geometrical isomers. In this study, we investigated these aspects in chromatography (column chemistry and mobile phase composition) and mass spectrometry settings with regards to better differentiation of geometrical isomers. A standard of a hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) derivative, L-chicoric acid (L-CA) - a di-acylated caffeoyltartaric acid ester found in a number of plant families - was used. Geometrical isomers of L-CA were formed by exposing the compound to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, to mimic the natural environment. The high performance liquid chromatography photo-diode array (HPLC-PDA) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) platforms were used to analyze the trans and cis geometrical isomers of L-CA. The HPLC-PDA results confirmed the generation of two cis geometrical isomers following UV exposure of the authentic trans-L-CA standard. Furthermore, the HPLC-PDA analyses demonstrated that the changes in both column chemistry (reverse-phase: C₁₈, biphenyl, phenyl-hexyl and pentafluorophenyl propyl) and mobile phase composition (aqueous acetonitrile and aqueous methanol) affect the chromatographic elution profiles of the L-CA isomers. The MS results, on the other hand, revealed undisputed fragmentation differences between the geometrical isomers of L-CA. Thus, this study demonstrates that the identification of the L-CA isomers can be achieved more efficiently and confidently with good chromatography coupled to well-optimized mass spectrometry conditions, a requirement which has been proven impossible with other types of HCA derivatives. Moreover, differences in the binding modes of L-CA geometrical isomers to the HIV type 1 integrase enzyme were observed, suggesting a synergistic anti-HIV-1 activity of these isomers.

Synthesis of 3-heteroarylchromones via a photochemical reaction

The direct coupling of 3-iodochromen-4-ones with heteroaromatics has been achieved via a photochemical reaction. A variety of 3-heteroarylchromones was obtained in moderate to good yields from the corresponding 3-iodochromen-4-ones and heteroaromatics, such as pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and benzofuran. The reaction worked smoothly in acetonitrile under a mercury lamp without any additives, providing a catalyst- and base-free approach for the synthesis of 3-heteroarylchromones.

Spatial distributions of and diurnal variations in low molecular weight carbonyl compounds in coastal seawater, and the controlling factors

We studied the spatial distributions of and the diurnal variations in four low molecular weight (LMW) carbonyl compounds, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, and glyoxal, in coastal seawater. The samples were taken from the coastal areas of Hiroshima Bay, the Iyo Nada, and the Bungo Channel, western Japan. The formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and glyoxal concentrations were higher in the northern part of Hiroshima Bay than at offshore sampling points in the Iyo Nada and the Bungo Channel. These three compounds were found at much higher concentrations in the surface water than in deeper water layers in Hiroshima Bay. It is noteworthy that propionaldehyde was not detected in any of the seawater samples, the concentrations present being lower than the detection limit (1 nanomole per liter (nM)) of the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system we used. Photochemical and biological experiments were performed in the laboratory to help understand the characteristic distributions and fates of the LMW carbonyl compounds. The primary process controlling their fate in the coastal environment appears to be their biological consumption. The direct photo degradation of propionaldehyde, initiated by ultraviolet (UV) absorption, was observed, although formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were not degraded by UV irradiation. Our results suggest that the degradation of the LMW carbonyl compounds by photochemically formed hydroxyl radicals is relatively insignificant in the study area. Atmospheric deposition is a possible source of soluble carbonyl compounds in coastal surface seawater, but it may not influence the carbonyl concentrations in offshore waters.

The pollution levels of BTEX and carbonyls under haze and non-haze days in Beijing, China

The North China Plain including Beijing is frequently suffering from serious haze days in recent years. To best recognize the influence of haze days on regional air quality, the pollution levels of deleterious gases of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene and o-xylene) and carbonyls (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone) under haze and non-haze days were contrastively investigated during the period of September 2008-August 2010 in Beijing. In comparison with non-haze days, remarkable enhancement of BTEX and the carbonyls under haze days in winter was found, with enhancement factors of 1.9-5.7 for BTEX and of 1.5-4.2 for the carbonyls. Whereas the enhancement factors for both BTEX (1.0-3.0) and the carbonyls (1.2-1.9) under haze days in summer were relatively small. The ratios of each BTEX to CO under both haze days and non-haze days exhibited a minimal value in the afternoon, whereas maximal values for the ratios of the carbonyls to CO were usually found in the afternoon. The ratios of each BTEX to CO were extremely greater under haze days than those under non-haze days in winter, but no evident difference was found in summer. The ratios of each carbonyl under both haze days and non-haze days in summer were at least a factor of 2 greater than those in winter and only enhancement of the ratios under haze days was found in winter. The remarkably higher ratios of ethylbenzene to m,p-xylene under haze days than non-haze days in both winter and summer revealed high reactivity of photochemical reactions initiated by OH radicals under haze days.

A novel photochemical system of ferrous sulfite complex: kinetics and mechanisms of rapid decolorization of Acid Orange 7 in aqueous solutions

We previously reported the decolorization of the azo dye Acid Orange 7 (AO7) by sulfate radical (SO4(-)) in the presence of iron(II) sulfite complex and oxygen under UV-vis irradiation (photo-iron(II) sulfite system). This system, however, achieves very limited mineralization of AO7 (in terms of total organic carbon (TOC) removal), which is not in accordance with literature reports on the oxidation of organic contaminants by SO4(-). In the present work, kinetics and products under irradiation of xenon lamp (350 W) were analyzed to reveal the reaction pathway of decolorization of AO7. Steady-state approximation (SSA) of SO4(-) radicals and apparent kinetics of AO7 were examined. The reaction between AO7 and SO4(-) was found to proceed in two steps, namely, electron transfer and SO4(-) addition. The second-order rate constant for the reaction between AO7 and SO4(-) was found to be 8.07 ± 1.07 × 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) by SSA and 6.80 ± 0.68 × 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) by competition kinetics method. The apparent kinetics of the decolorization of AO7 under irradiation closely fits the mechanism of radical chain reactions of various reactive sulfur species. By liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, we identified the sulfate adduct AO7-SO4 and confirmed the two-step reaction between AO7 and SO4(-). This stable sulfate adduct provides a good explanation of the poor TOC removal during decolorization of AO7 by the photo-iron(II) sulfite system.
