Abstract
Numerous studies have suggested that noise exposure might be associated with changes in stress hormone levels. However, quantitative evidence for these effects in humans is rare and remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of exposure to noise and its different levels on stress hormone changes in task performance. Quasi-experimental noise exposure environment was established for 90 male university student volunteers in their twenties, and each was exposed to different noise levels during task performance. The stress hormones tested included cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), adrenaline, and noradrenaline. A one-way ANOVA was performed to investigate differences in hormone levels measured in the three groups according to the noise exposure levels (35, 45, or 75 dB). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to adjust for confounding factors that might affect hormone levels. After adjusting for confounders, significant exposure-dependent differences were found in hormone levels in salivary cortisol, serum cortisol, serum ACTH, and serum adrenaline. The amount of hormonal increase in 75 dB exposure group compared to 35 or 45 dB groups was detected. Similar results were also seen in the rate of change analysis. Our findings indicate that short-term noise exposure during task performance elevates stress hormone levels. Further, the extent of stress hormone alterations varies with noise exposure levels. Changes in hormone levels are an objective measure that may be used to identify health effects and stress responses in various noise environments.

Abstract
Carcinoid syndrome (CS) is a debilitating disease that affects approximately 20% of patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN). Due to the increasing incidence and improved overall survival of patients with NEN over recent decades, patients are increasingly suffering from chronic and refractory CS symptoms. At present, symptom control is hampered by an incomplete understanding of the pathophysiology of this syndrome. This systematic review is the first to critically appraise the available evidence for the various hormonal mediators considered to play a causative role in CS. Overall, evidence for the putative mediators of CS was scarce and often of poor quality. Based on the available literature, data are only sufficient to agree on the role of serotonin as a mediator of CS-associated diarrhea and fibrosis. A direct role for tachykinins and an indirect role of catecholamines in the pathogenesis of CS is suggested by several studies. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to link histamine, bradykinin, kallikrein, prostaglandins, or motilin to CS. To summarize, available literature only sufficiently appoints serotonin and suggests a role for tachykinins and catecholamines as mediators of CS, with insufficient evidence for other putative mediators. Descriptions of CS should be revised to focus on these proven hormonal associations to be more accurate, and further research is needed into other potential mediators.

Abstract
Introduction The present study evaluated the effect of preslaughter stress intensities on the behavioral, physiological, blood biochemicals, and hormonal responses in goats. Methods Twenty-seven intact male goats (Ardi breed, 10 months of age, 27 kg liveweight) were divided into three treatment groups viz., the control (C) group, ear pulling (EP) group, and leg pulling (LP) group. Various behavioral, physiological, blood biochemical and hormonal responses were recorded before and after handling. Results and Discussion The EP and LP goats had a higher frequency and intensity of vocalization as compared to control goats. The preslaughter handling stress intensities had a significant effect on the before and after handling values of heart rate, respiration rate, rectal temperature, and ear temperature. Further, among groups, the glucose value increased significantly upon preslaughter handling as compared to the baseline value. The LP goats had significantly higher after-handling value for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) as compared to the before-handling value. The catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) and β-endorphin concentrations increased significantly upon preslaughter handling. The higher physiological, behavioral, blood biochemical, and hormonal response indicated higher preslaughter stress in EP and LP goats. Both levels of intensity revealed unfavorable responses in goats that may adversely affect animal welfare and meat quality. Thus, to ensure minimal adverse effects on behavior, physiology, blood enzymes, and hormonal responses, it is recommended to follow animal welfare principles when implementing preslaughter handling practices.

Abstract
A weakened immune system and more inflammatory cytokines being released are possible effects of the surgical stress that a cesarean section induces. This kind of reaction, in addition to the altered reaction to catecholamines, has the potential to significantly affect the immune system of the mother and the patients' general postoperative course. This prospective study compared the plasma levels of catecholamines and cytokines in healthy pregnant patients having cesarean sections under spinal anesthesia versus general anesthesia. A total of 30 pregnant women undergoing elective cesarean sections were divided into two groups: 15 who received general anesthesia (GA) and 15 who received spinal anesthesia (SA). Blood samples were collected from all subjects before anesthesia induction (pre-OP), 6 h postoperatively (6 h post-OP), and 12 h (12 h post-OP), to measure levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, IL-4, IL-10, norepinephrine (NE), and epinephrine (EPI). When we compared the two groups, we discovered that only IL-6 and IL-4 had significantly higher levels pre-OP, whereas all studied cytokines exhibited an increase in the GA versus SA group at 6 and 12 h post-OP. In the case of catecholamines, we discovered that serum levels are positively related with pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory cytokines, depending on the time of day and type of anesthetic drugs. Compared to SA, GA has a more consistent effect on the inflammatory response and catecholamine levels. The findings of this study confirm that the type of anesthesia can alter postoperative immunomodulation to various degrees via changes in cytokine and catecholamine production. SA could be a preferable choice for cesarean section because it is an anesthetic method that reduces perioperative stress and allows for less opioid administration, impacting cytokine production with proper immunomodulation.

Abstract
Anti-hypotensive treatment, which includes dopamine, dobutamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, milrinone, vasopressin, terlipressin, levosimendan, and glucocorticoids, is a long-established intervention in neonates with arterial hypotension (AH). However, there are still gaps in knowledge and issues that need clarification. The main questions and challenges that neonatologists face relate to the reference ranges of arterial blood pressure in presumably healthy neonates in relation to gestational and postnatal age; the arterial blood pressure level that potentially affects perfusion of critical organs; the incorporation of targeted echocardiography and near-infrared spectroscopy for assessing heart function and cerebral perfusion in clinical practice; the indication, timing, and choice of medication for each individual patient; the limited randomized clinical trials in neonates with sometimes conflicting results; and the sparse data regarding the potential effect of early hypotension or anti-hypotensive medications on long-term neurodevelopment. In this review, after a short review of AH definitions used in neonates and existing data on pathophysiology of AH, we discuss currently available data on pharmacokinetic and hemodynamic effects, as well as the effectiveness and safety of anti-hypotensive medications in neonates. In addition, data on the comparisons between anti-hypotensive medications and current suggestions for the main indications of each medication are discussed.

Abstract
Catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy (CCM) is an entity associated with increased levels of catecholamines causing subendocardial and papillary muscle cardiomyocyte degeneration and necrosis. In 2020, 49 autopsies from early rabbit deaths in a colony used for medical device biocompatibility studies were submitted for microscopic examination. Of the 49 rabbits, 26 had histologic changes consistent with CCM. No common stressor for CCM was determined in affected rabbits. Animals were generally male, were 12-16-wk-old, and were found dead or had bloating, lethargy, and/or diarrhea. Those observed with clinical signs were euthanized and autopsied per the organization's standard operating procedures. Heart lesions consisted of various degrees of apical subendocardial myocardial degeneration and necrosis. Common non-cardiac lesions included pulmonary congestion and edema, hepatic congestion and centrilobular hepatocellular degeneration, and/or variable intestinal submucosal edema.

Abstract
Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors producing catecholamines. Pheochromocytomas occur in the adrenal medulla, while paragangliomas are those that occur outside the adrenal gland. Here we describe a case series of children with a pathological diagnosis of pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma who consulted at a tertiary care children's hospital in Argentina. A total of 21 patients (14 males) were included; their median age was 11.4 years; 8 children had pheochromocytoma and 13, paraganglioma. Arterial hypertension was observed in 14/21. Most paragangliomas were para-aortic (9/13). Since they are a potentially curable cause of hypertension, clinical suspicion is very important. An early diagnosis and the initiation of an adequate antihypertensive treatment, which allows the patient to undergo surgery with normal blood pressure, ensure a cure in most cases if tumor resection is complete.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High circulating DPP3 (dipeptidyl peptidase 3) has been associated with poor prognosis in critically ill patients with circulatory failure. In such situation, DPP3 could play a pathological role, putatively via an excessive angiotensin peptides cleavage. Our objective was to investigate the hemodynamics changes induced by DPP3 in mice and the relation between the observed effects and renin-angiotensin system modulation. METHODS Ten-week-old male C57Bl/6J mice were subjected to intravenous injection of purified human DPP3 or an anti-DPP3 antibody (procizumab). Invasive blood pressure and renal blood flow were monitored throughout the experiments. Circulating angiotensin peptides and catecholamines were measured and receptor blocking experiment performed to investigate the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS DPP3 administration significantly increased renal blood flow, while blood pressure was minimally affected. Conversely, procizumab led to significantly decreased renal blood flow. Angiotensin peptides measurement and an AT1R (angiotensin II receptor type 1) blockade experiment using valsartan demonstrated that the renovascular effect induced by DPP3 is due to reduced AT1R activation via decreased concentrations of circulating angiotensin II, III, and IV. Measurements of circulating catecholamines and an adrenergic receptor blockade by labetalol demonstrated a concomitant catecholamines release that explains blood pressure maintenance upon DPP3 administration. CONCLUSIONS High circulating DPP3 increases renal blood flow due to reduced AT1R activation via decreased concentrations of circulating angiotensin peptides while blood pressure is maintained by concomitant endogenous catecholamines release.

Abstract
Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is a transient left ventricle dysfunction usually caused by a stressful trigger (emotional or physical). We report the case of a 77 year-old female patient who presented with TTS caused by a pheochromocytoma, a catecholamine-producing neuroendocrine tumour. Diagnosis was facilitated by acute kidney injury prompting renal ultrasound, recurrence of TTS and symptoms of episodic palpitations, profuse sweating and labile blood pressure. Furthermore, during her hospitalisation the patient also developed an Ogilvie syndrome, an acute colonic pseudo-obstruction, due to the catecholamine-excess. Treatment consisted of betablocker and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor for TTS, neostigmine for Ogilvie syndrome, in combination with alpha-blocker and surgical removal of the tumour after recuperation of left ventricular function and colonic pseudo-obstruction. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of the pathophysiological triad of pheochromocytoma leading to Takotsubo and Ogilvie syndrome in a single patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adrenaline-producing tumors are mostly characterized by a sudden release of catecholamines with episodic symptoms. Noradrenergic ones are usually less symptomatic and characterized by a continuous overproduction of catecholamines that are released into the bloodstream. Their effects on the cardiovascular system can thus be different. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular complications by catecholamine phenotype. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed data on the prevalence of cardiovascular events in 341 consecutive patients with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma treated from 1995 to 2023. Biochemical catecholamine phenotype was determined based on plasma or urinary catecholamines and metanephrines. RESULTS According to the phenotype, 153 patients had noradrenergic pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma and 188 had adrenergic pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. In the whole sample, the incidence of serious cardiovascular complications was 28% (95 patients), with no difference between the phenotypes or sexes. The noradrenergic phenotype had significantly more atherosclerotic complications (composite end point of type 1 myocardial infarction and symptomatic peripheral artery disease; odds ratio, 3.58 [95% CI, 1.59-8.83]; P=0.003), while the adrenergic phenotype more often had type 2 myocardial infarction and takotsubo-like cardiomyopathy (OR, 0.24 [95% CI, 0.09-0.57]; P=0.002). These changes remained even after adjustment for conventional risk factors of atherosclerosis. CONCLUSIONS We found a 28% incidence of cardiovascular complications in a consecutive group of patients with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. Patients presenting with a noradrenergic phenotype have a higher incidence of atherosclerotic complications, while the adrenergic phenotype is associated with a higher incidence of acute myocardial damage due to takotsubo-like cardiomyopathy.

Abstract
We performed a comparative analysis of direct and mediated through the maternal organism effects of elevated catecholamine concentration on changes in the cardiac activity parameters in female rats and their fetuses on gestation days 18 and 20 under in vivo conditions. Administration of L-DOPA, a precursor of catecholaminergic transmitters, did not cause chronotropic effects in fetuses. Analysis of HR variability showed that in fetuses, irrespective of the administration route, there was an increase in nervous influences while the leading role of humoral-metabolic factors in the regulation of HR was preserved. In females receiving L-DOPA injection on day 18 of gestation, a decrease in humoral-metabolic and an increase in nerve effects were observed; in rats injected with L-DOPA on day 20 of gestation, an increase in sympathetic influences was found. Administration of L-DOPA to fetuses provoked a slight increase in the power of all components of the heart rhythm periodogram spectrum in females on day 18 of gestation and their decrease on day 20. Changes in the parameters of HR variability in females can confirm the hypothesis that in the "mother-fetus" system, the heart rhythm in the mother can be affected by both maternal and fetal influences presumably through the humoral-metabolic regulation.

Abstract
Human brain imaging research using functional MRI (fMRI) has uncovered flexible variations in the functional connectivity between brain regions. While some of this variability likely arises from the pattern of information flow through circuits, it may also be influenced by rapid changes in effective synaptic strength at the molecular level, a phenomenon called Dynamic Network Connectivity (DNC) discovered in non-human primate circuits. These neuromodulatory molecular mechanisms are found in layer III of the macaque dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), the site of the microcircuits shown by Goldman-Rakic to be critical for working memory. This research has shown that the neuromodulators acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and dopamine can rapidly change the strength of synaptic connections in layer III dlPFC by (1) modifying the depolarization state of the post-synaptic density needed for NMDA receptor neurotransmission and (2) altering the open state of nearby potassium channels to rapidly weaken or strengthen synaptic efficacy and the strength of persistent neuronal firing. Many of these actions involve increased cAMP-calcium signaling in dendritic spines, where varying levels can coordinate the arousal state with the cognitive state. The current review examines the hypothesis that some of the dynamic changes in correlative strength between cortical regions observed in human fMRI studies may arise from these molecular underpinnings, as has been seen when pharmacological agents or genetic alterations alter the functional connectivity of the dlPFC consistent with the macaque physiology. These DNC mechanisms provide essential flexibility but may also confer vulnerability to malfunction when dysregulated in cognitive disorders.

Abstract
Introduction Women with perinatal anxiety have reduced coping capacity during labor, which affects labor progress and increases the likelihood of a cesarean section. Several non-pharmacological interventions for anxiety during childbirth are available. This study used the "lite touch" method, a non-pharmacological intervention based on physiological responses and obstetric clinical experience in women. We aimed to evaluate whether lite touch could relieve perinatal anxiety and investigate the effect of light skin stroking on the maternal hormones, catecholamine, and cortisol. Methods This randomized clinical trial involved women with low-risk singleton pregnancies at full term or near term. Eligible pregnant women who were latent and did not undergo epidural anesthesia were randomized into two groups. Participants in the intervention group underwent routine prenatal care, including lite touch, whereas the control group underwent routine prenatal care alone. Demographic data were collected through a questionnaire. Labor anxiety was assessed using the State Anxiety Inventory, and saliva was collected before and after the intervention. Changes in saliva cortisol and catecholamine levels were analyzed using a double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results In total, 83 participants were included, with 43 and 40 in the intervention and control groups, respectively. In the intervention group, pre-intervention anxiety scores were significantly lower (p < 0.01) than post-intervention anxiety scores, whereas the control group showed no difference in anxiety scores before and after intervention (p > 0.05). Cortisol and catecholamine levels in saliva were significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group after the intervention (p < 0.01). Discussion Lite touch can reduce the latent anxiety state of low-risk pregnant women, thereby maintaining in vivo stability and facilitating labor. Abstract
Predictive processing models posit that brains constantly attempt to predict their sensory inputs. Prediction errors signal when these predictions are incorrect and are thought to be instructive signals that drive corrective plasticity. Recent findings support the idea that the locus coeruleus (LC) - a brain-wide neuromodulatory system - signals several types of prediction error. I discuss how these findings support models proposing that the LC signals global model failures: instances where predictions about the world are strongly violated. Focusing on the cortex, I explore the utility of this signal in learning rate control, how the LC circuit may compute the signal, and how this view may aid our understanding of neurodivergence.

Abstract
Stress substantially increases the risk of developing painful temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) by influencing the release of endogenous catecholamines. Propranolol, an antagonist of β-adrenergic receptors, has shown potential in alleviating TMD-associated pain, particularly when the level of catecholamines is elevated. The aim of this study was to explore whether intra-articular propranolol administration is effective in diminishing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain during repeated stress situations. Additionally, we investigated the effect of repeated stress on the expression of genes encoding β-adrenoceptors in the trigeminal ganglion. In the present study, rats were exposed to a stress protocol induced by sound, then to the administration of formalin in the TMJ (to elicit a nociceptive response), followed immediately afterward by different doses of propranolol, after which the analgesic response to propranolol was evaluated. We also assessed the levels of beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptor mRNAs (Adrb1 and Adrb2, respectively) using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Our findings revealed that propranolol administration reduces formalin-induced TMJ nociception more effectively in stressed rats than in non-stressed rats. Furthermore, repeated stress decreases the expression of the Adrb2 gene within the trigeminal ganglion. The findings of this study are noteworthy as they suggest that individuals with a chronic stress history might find potential benefits from β-blockers in TMD treatment.

Abstract
Hypoglycaemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF) is characterised by an impairment in adrenal medullary and neurogenic symptom responses following episodes of recurrent hypoglycaemia. Here, we review the status quo of research related to the regulatory mechanisms of the adrenal medulla in its response to single and recurrent hypoglycaemia in both diabetic and non-diabetic subjects with particular focus given to catecholamine synthesis, enzymatic activity, and the impact of adrenal medullary peptides. Short-term post-transcriptional modifications, particularly phosphorylation at specific residues of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), play a key role in the regulation of catecholamine synthesis. While the effects of recurrent hypoglycaemia on catecholamine synthetic enzymes remain inconsistent, long-term changes in TH protein expression suggest species-specific responses. Adrenomedullary peptides such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), galanin, and proenkephalin exhibit altered gene and protein expression in response to hypoglycaemia, suggesting a potential role in the modulation of catecholamine secretion. Of note is NPY, since its antagonism has been shown to prevent reductions in TH protein expression. This review highlights the need for further investigation into the molecular mechanisms involved in the adrenal medullary response to hypoglycaemia. Despite advancements in our understanding of HAAF in non-diabetic rodents, a reliable diabetic rodent model of HAAF remains a challenge.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction is a major contributor to CVD-related mortality. T2DM is a risk factor for MI. Stress activates the HPA axis, SNS, and endogenous OPS. These POMC derivatives increase the blood glucose and cardiovascular response by inhibiting the PI3K/AkT insulin signaling pathway and increasing cardiac contraction. Opioids regulate the effect of the HPA axis and SNS and they are cardioprotective. The chronic activation of the stress response may lead to insulin resistance, cardiac dysfunction, and MI. Stress and T2DM, therefore, increase the risk of MI. T2DM is preceded by prediabetes. Studies have shown that prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of MI because of inflammation, hyperlipidemia, endothelial dysfunction, and hypertension. The HPA axis is reported to be dysregulated in prediabetes. However, the SNS and the OPS have not been explored during prediabetes. The effect of prediabetes on POMC derivatives has yet to be fully explored and understood. The impact of stress and prediabetes on the cardiovascular response needs to be investigated. This study sought to review the potential impact of prediabetes on the POMC derivatives and pathways that could lead to MI.

Abstract
The sympathoadrenal medullary system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis are both activated upon stressful events. The release of catecholamines, such as dopamine, norepinephrine (NE), and epinephrine (EPI), from sympathetic autonomic nerves participate in the adaptive responses to acute stress. Most theories suggest that activation of peripheral β-adrenoceptors (β-ARs) mediates catecholamines-induced memory enhancement. These include direct activation of β-ARs in the vagus nerve, as well as indirect responses to catecholamine-induced glucose changes in the brain. Excessive sympathetic activity is deeply associated with memories experienced during strong emotional stressful conditions, with catecholamines playing relevant roles in fear and traumatic memories consolidation. Recent findings suggest that EPI is implicated in fear and traumatic contextual memories associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by increasing hippocampal gene transcription (e.g., Nr4a) downstream to cAMP response-element protein activation (CREB). Herein, we reviewed the literature focusing on the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of memories associated with fear and traumatic experiences to pave new avenues for the treatment of stress and anxiety conditions, such as PTSD.

Abstract
This study examined whether biological sex moderates the relationship between experiences of workplace culture and urinary levels of catecholamines and their metabolites. We conducted a series of regression analyses (predictors: 3-methoxytyramine (3MT), 5-hydroxyindolacetic (5HIAA), and dopamine (DA); outcomes: employee engagement and workplace culture) in a sample of 218 participants. Compared to men, women rated workplace culture less positively (r = -0.210; p < 0.01) and had stronger positive associations with 3MT (r = 0.328; p < 0.001), DA (r = 0.376; p < 0.001), and 5HIAA (r = 0.168; p < 0.01). There was a significant moderation effect between 3MT and sex on employee engagement (b = -1.76 (SE = 0.84); p < 0.01), and 3MT had a positive significant association for men with engagement (p < 0.05); however, there was no significant association for women. Findings suggest that for women, less positive experiences with workplace culture could elevate 3MT, stimulating sympathetic nervous tone and potentially amplifying risks for negative health outcomes. Conversely, men who reported higher employee engagement had higher levels of 3MT, suggesting possible health risks associated with high levels of engagement, rather than lack of engagement. Overall, study findings suggested differential health risks based on biological sex, potentially impacting health risk policy development.

Abstract
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a fundamental role in the developing and adult nervous system, contributing to neuronal survival, differentiation, and synaptic plasticity. Dysregulation of BDNF synthesis, secretion or signaling has been associated with many neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric, and neurodegenerative disorders. Although the transcriptional regulation of the Bdnf gene has been extensively studied in neurons, less is known about the regulation and function of BDNF in non-neuronal cells. The most abundant type of non-neuronal cells in the brain, astrocytes, express BDNF in response to catecholamines. However, genetic elements responsible for this regulation have not been identified. Here, we investigated four potential Bdnf enhancer regions and based on reporter gene assays, CRISPR/Cas9 engineering and CAPTURE-3C-sequencing we conclude that a region 840 kb upstream of the Bdnf gene regulates catecholamine-dependent expression of Bdnf in rodent astrocytes. We also provide evidence that this regulation is mediated by CREB and AP1 family transcription factors. This is the first report of an enhancer coordinating the transcription of Bdnf gene in non-neuronal cells.

Abstract
Herein, a magnetic borate-functionalized MXene composite with multiple boronic affinity sites was fabricated by embedding Fe3 O4 nanoparticles with 4-formylphenylboronic acid functionalized Ti3 C2 Tx nanosheets and served as sorbent for the simultaneous extraction of catecholamines (CAs) in urine samples. The morphology and structure of the magnetic materials were investigated using scanning microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction. The introduction of polyethyleneimine can amplify the bonded boronic acid groups, thereby effectively improving the adsorption capacities for CAs based on the multiple interactions of boronic affinity, hydrogen bonding, and metal coordination. The adsorption performance was investigated using the kinetics and isotherms models, and the main parameters that influence the extraction efficiency were optimized. Under the most favorable magnetic solid-phase extraction condition, a sensitive method for the analysis of CAs in urine samples was developed by combining magnetic solid-phase extraction conditions with high-performance liquid chromatography detection. The findings illustrated that the proposed approach possessed a wide linearity range of 0.05-250 ng/mL with an acceptable correlation coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.9984) and detection limits of 0.010-0.015 ng/mL for the target CAs. The research not only provides a notable composite with multiple boronic affinity sites but also offers an effective and feasible measure for the detection of CAs in biological samples.

Abstract
CONTEXT Pheochromocytomas are increasingly diagnosed in incidentally detected adrenal masses. However, the characteristics of incidental pheochromocytomas are unclear. OBJECTIVE We aimed to assess the proportion and clinical, biochemical, radiological, genetic, histopathological, and follow-up characteristics of incidental pheochromocytomas. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of patients with pheochromocytoma seen between January 2010 and October 2022 at a large UK tertiary care center. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically or by the combined presence of increased plasma and/or urinary metanephrines (MN), indeterminate adrenal mass on cross-sectional imaging, and metaiodobenzylguanidine avidity. RESULTS We identified 167 patients with pheochromocytoma; 144 (86.2%) underwent adrenalectomy, for 23 (13.8%) surgery was either awaited, deemed unsuitable due to frailty or other metastatic malignancy, or declined by the patients. Excluding pheochromocytomas diagnosed via screening genetically predisposed individuals (N = 20), 37 of 132 (28.0%) presented with adrenergic symptoms and/or uncontrolled hypertension, while 91 of 132 (69.0%) patients presented with an incidentally detected adrenal mass. Incidentally detected patients were older (median age 62 years) than those detected due to clinical suspicion (aged 42 years) or after genetic screening (aged 33 years) (all P < .05). Incidentally detected pheochromocytomas were smaller (median 42 mm) than tumors detected due to adrenergic symptoms/uncontrolled hypertension (60 mm), but larger than tumors identified by genetic screening (30 mm) (all P < .05). Increased MN excretion showed a similar pattern (symptomatic/uncontrolled hypertension > incidental > genetic screening) (all P < .05). Hereditary predisposition was detected in 20.4% of patients (incidental, 15.3%; symptomatic/uncontrolled hypertension, 42.9%). CONCLUSION The majority of pheochromocytomas are diagnosed incidentally and have distinct clinical, radiological, biochemical, and genetic features. Their detection at older age but smaller size may point to a different underlying tumor biology.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the rate of recurrence among patients with pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas (PGLs; together PPGLs) and to identify predictors of recurrence (local recurrence and/or metastatic disease). Methods This retrospective multicenter study included information of 303 patients with PPGLs in follow-up in 19 Spanish tertiary hospitals. Recurrent disease was defined by the development of local recurrence and/or metastatic disease after initial complete surgical resection. Results A total of 303 patients with PPGLs that underwent 311 resections were included (288 pheochromocytomas and 15 sympathetic PGLs). After a median follow-up of 4.8 years (range 1-19), 24 patients (7.9%) had recurrent disease (3 local recurrence, 17 metastatic disease and 4 local recurrence followed by metastatic disease). The median time from the diagnosis of the PPGL to the recurrence was of 11.2 months (range 0.5-174) and recurrent disease cases distributed uniformly during the follow-up period. The presence of a pathogenic variant in SDHB gene (hazard ratio [HR] 13.3, 95% CI 4.20-41.92), higher urinary normetanephrine levels (HR 1.02 per each increase in standard deviation, 95% CI 1.01-1.03) and a larger tumor size (HR 1.01 per each increase in mm, 95% CI 1.00-1.02) were independently associated with disease recurrence. Conclusion The recurrence of PPGLs occurred more frequently in patients with SDHB mutations, with larger tumors and with higher urinary normetanephrine levels. Since PPGL recurrence may occur at any time after the initial PPGL diagnosis is performed, we recommend performing a strict follow-up in all patients with PPGLs, especially in those patients with a higher risk of recurrent disease.

Abstract
Perceptual decisions about sensory input are influenced by fluctuations in ongoing neural activity, most prominently driven by attention and neuromodulator systems. It is currently unknown if neuromodulator activity and attention differentially modulate perceptual decision-making and/or whether neuromodulatory systems in fact control attentional processes. To investigate the effects of two distinct neuromodulatory systems and spatial attention on perceptual decisions, we pharmacologically elevated cholinergic (through donepezil) and catecholaminergic (through atomoxetine) levels in humans performing a visuo-spatial attention task, while we measured electroencephalography (EEG). Both attention and catecholaminergic enhancement improved decision-making at the behavioral and algorithmic level, as reflected in increased perceptual sensitivity and the modulation of the drift rate parameter derived from drift diffusion modeling. Univariate analyses of EEG data time-locked to the attentional cue, the target stimulus, and the motor response further revealed that attention and catecholaminergic enhancement both modulated pre-stimulus cortical excitability, cue- and stimulus-evoked sensory activity, as well as parietal evidence accumulation signals. Interestingly, we observed both similar, unique, and interactive effects of attention and catecholaminergic neuromodulation on these behavioral, algorithmic, and neural markers of the decision-making process. Thereby, this study reveals an intricate relationship between attentional and catecholaminergic systems and advances our understanding about how these systems jointly shape various stages of perceptual decision-making.

Abstract
The biochemical phenotype of paragangliomas (PGLs) is highly dependent on the underlying genetic background and tumor location. PGLs at extra-adrenal locations usually do not express phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT), the enzyme required for epinephrine production, which was explained by the absence of glucocorticoids. PGLs with pathogenic variants (PVs) in Harvey rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (HRAS) can occur in or outside of the adrenal, but always synthesize epinephrine independently of the localization. Here, we characterize the signaling pathways through which PVs in HRAS influence PNMT expression. Catecholamines, cortisol, and transcriptional features of PGL tissues with known genetic background were analyzed. Genetically modified rat pheochromocytoma cells carrying PVs in Hras were generated and analyzed for regulation of Pnmt expression. Elevated epinephrine contents in PGLs with PVs in HRAS were accompanied by enrichment in mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling compared to PGLs with PVs in genes that activate hypoxia pathways. In vitro, Hras PVs increased Pnmt expression and epinephrine biosynthesis through increased phosphorylation of stimulatory protein 1 via MAPK signaling. Here, we provide a molecular mechanism that explains the PV-dependent epinephrine production of PGLs.

Abstract
Compelling evidence supports the hypothesis that stress negatively impacts cancer development and prognosis. Irrespective of its physical, biological or psychological source, stress triggers a physiological response that is mediated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic adrenal medullary axis. The resulting release of glucocorticoids and catecholamines into the systemic circulation leads to neuroendocrine and metabolic adaptations that can affect immune homeostasis and immunosurveillance, thus impairing the detection and eradication of malignant cells. Moreover, catecholamines directly act on β-adrenoreceptors present on tumor cells, thereby stimulating survival, proliferation, and migration of nascent neoplasms. Numerous preclinical studies have shown that blocking adrenergic receptors slows tumor growth, suggesting potential clinical benefits of using β-blockers in cancer therapy. Much of these positive effects of β-blockade are mediated by improved immunosurveillance. The present trial watch summarizes current knowledge from preclinical and clinical studies investigating the anticancer effects of β-blockers either as standalone agents or in combination with conventional antineoplastic treatments or immunotherapy.

Abstract
Prevailing hypoxemia and hypoglycemia in near-term fetuses with placental insufficiency-induced intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) chronically increases norepinephrine concentrations, which lower adrenergic sensitivity and lipid mobilization postnatally, indicating a predisposition for adiposity. To determine adrenergic-induced responses, we examined the perirenal adipose tissue transcriptome from IUGR fetuses with or without hypercatecholaminemia. IUGR was induced in sheep with maternal hyperthermia, and hypercatecholaminemia in IUGR was prevented with bilateral adrenal demedullation. Adipose tissue was collected from sham-operated control (CON) and IUGR fetuses and adrenal-demedullated control (CAD) and IUGR (IAD) fetuses. Norepinephrine concentrations were lower in IAD fetuses than in IUGR fetuses despite both being hypoxemic and hypoglycemic. In IUGR fetuses, perirenal adipose tissue mass relative to body mass was greater compared with the CON, adrenal-demedullated control, and IAD groups. Transcriptomic analysis identified 581 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in CON vs IUGR adipose tissue and 193 DEGs in IUGR vs IAD adipose tissue. Integrated functional analysis of these 2 comparisons showed enrichment for proliferator-activated receptor signaling and metabolic pathways and identified adrenergic responsive genes. Within the adrenergic-regulated DEGs, we identified transcripts that regulate adipocyte proliferation and differentiation: adipogenesis regulatory factor, C/CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α, and sterol carrier protein 2. DEGs associated with the metabolic pathway included pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4, 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 4, IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP-5 and IGFBP-7). Sex-specific expression differences were also found for adipogenesis regulatory factor, pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4, IGFBP5, and IGFBP7. These findings indicate that sustained adrenergic stimulation during IUGR leads to adipocyte hyperplasia with alterations in metabolism, proliferation, and preadipocyte differentiation pathways.

Abstract
Introduction Pheochromocytoma is a rare catecholamine-producing neuroendocrine tumor originating from the adrenal medulla chromaffin cells. Hemodynamic instability can occur during the induction of anesthesia and surgical manipulation of the tumor. This study investigated the effects of intraoperative dexmedetomidine administration on hemodynamic stability in patients undergoing laparoscopic adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma. Methods Forty patients who underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma were randomly assigned to the dexmedetomidine (n = 20) or control (n = 20) group. The primary outcome of this study was intraoperative hemodynamic stability, and the secondary endpoint was the plasma catecholamine concentrations, specifically of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Results The intraoperative maximum blood pressures were significantly lower in the dexmedetomidine group (control vs. dexmedetomidine group: 182 ± 31 vs. 161 ± 20, 102 ± 17 vs. 90 ± 10, and 128 ± 22 vs. 116 ± 12 [mean ± SD] mmHg and p = 0.020, 0.015, and 0.040 for systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressure, respectively). The maximum heart rate during surgery was 108 ± 15 bpm in the control group and 95 ± 12 bpm in the dexmedetomidine group (p = 0.010). Other parameters of hemodynamic instability were comparable between both groups. Plasma catecholamine concentrations did not differ between the groups. Conclusion Dexmedetomidine infusion following the induction of anesthesia at a rate of 0.5 μg/kg/h significantly attenuated the maximum intraoperative SBP, DBP, MBP, and HR, contributing to improved hemodynamic stability.

Abstract
Dopaminergic neurons are constantly threatened by the thin boundaries between functional α-synuclein (AS) structural disorder and pathogenic aggregation, and between dopamine (DA) neurotransmitter activity and accumulation of cytotoxic by-products. The possibilities of developing drugs for Parkinson's disease (PD) depend on our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that cause or accompany the pathological structural changes in AS. This review focuses on the three interconnected aspects of AS conformational transitions, its aggregation pathways and ligand binding. Specifically, the interactions of AS with DA, DA metabolites, DA analogs and DA agonists are considered. Recent advances in the field are discussed with reference to the structural properties of AS and the methodologies employed. Although several issues are still object of debate, salient structural features of the protein, the aggregates and the ligands can be identified, in the hope of fueling experimental and computational approaches to the discovery of novel disease-modifying agents.

Abstract
Research evaluating the role of the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T) gene in schizophrenia has not yet provided an extended understanding of the proximal pathways contributing to the 5-10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme's activity and the distal pathways being affected by its activity. This review investigates these pathways, describing mechanisms relevant to riboflavin availability, trace mineral interactions, and the 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) product of the MTHFR enzyme. These factors remotely influence vitamin cofactor activation, histamine metabolism, catecholamine metabolism, serotonin metabolism, the oxidative stress response, DNA methylation, and nicotinamide synthesis. These biochemical components form a broad interactive landscape from which candidate markers can be drawn for research inquiry into schizophrenia and other forms of mental illness. Candidate markers drawn from this functional biochemical background have been found to have biomarker status with greater than 90% specificity and sensitivity for achieving diagnostic certainty in schizophrenia and schizoaffective psychosis. This has implications for achieving targeted treatments for serious mental illness.

Abstract
Purpose While there are reports of treatment-related endocrine disruptions and catecholamine surges in pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL) patients treated with [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE therapy, the spectrum of these abnormalities in the immediate post-treatment period (within 48 hours) has not been previously evaluated and is likely underestimated. Methods The study population included patients (≥18 years) enrolled in a phase 2 trial for treatment of somatostatin receptor (SSTR)-2+ inoperable/metastatic pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma with [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE (7.4 GBq per cycle for 1 - 4 cycles). Hormonal measurements [adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, estradiol, growth hormone, prolactin], catecholamines, and metanephrines were obtained on days-1, 2, 3, 30, and 60 per cycle as per trial protocol, and were retrospectively analyzed. Results Among the 27 patients (age: 54 ± 12.7 years, 48.1% females) who underwent hormonal evaluation, hypoprolactinemia (14.1%), elevated FSH (13.1%), and elevated LH (12.5%) were the most frequent hormonal abnormalities across all 4 cycles combined. On longitudinal follow-up, significant reductions were noted in i. ACTH without corresponding changes in cortisol, ii. TSH, and FT4, and iii. prolactin at or before day-30 of [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE. No significant changes were observed in the gonadotropic axis and GH levels. Levels of all hormones on day-60 were not significantly different from day-1 values, suggesting the transient nature of these changes. However, two patients developed clinical, persistent endocrinopathies (primary hypothyroidism: n=1 male; early menopause: n=1 female). Compared to day-1, a significant % increase in norepinephrine, dopamine, and normetanephrine levels were noted at 24 hours following [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE dose and peaked within 48 hours. Conclusions [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE therapy is associated with alterations in endocrine function likely from radiation exposure to SSTR2+ endocrine tissues. However, these changes may sometimes manifest as clinically significant endocrinopathies. It is therefore important to periodically assess endocrine function during [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE therapy, especially among symptomatic patients. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mercury poisoning is a condition with multiple-organ dysfunction that has effects on the central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system, skin, lungs, and kidneys. It can be fatal or may result in sequelae such as neurological disturbances, if treated late or left untreated. The endocrinological effects of mercury exposure are not well-known. We aimed to evaluate patients with mercury poisoning. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 6 cases of mercury poisoning from 3 families were included in the study. Clinical, laboratory, and follow-up data were recorded. RESULTS Thyroid dysfunction was presented as high thyroid hormones and normal thyrotropin level (unsuppressed) in 5 cases (83.3%). On the other hand, pheochromocytoma-like syndrome was detected in 5 cases (83.3%) with hypertension. The 4 cases were the first to use methimazole for mercury poisoning due to tachycardia and hypertension despite antihypertensive treatment due to catecholamine excess and thyroid dysfunction. Hyponatremia was detected in 3 cases (50%). CONCLUSION Mercury poisoning is difficult to diagnose because it is rare and presents with nonspecific physical and laboratory findings. Early diagnosis and providing appropriate treatment are essential in order to prevent sequelae. Mercury poisoning should be considered in patients with unexplained hypertension and tachycardia suggesting the involvement of thyroid hormones and catecholamines.

Abstract
Pheochromocytomas are rare tumors that arise from the sympathetic ganglia or adrenal medulla and secrete catecholamines that are known for the classic triad of headaches, profuse sweating, and paroxysmal hypertension. However, there have been instances of asymptomatic patients found to have a pheochromocytoma. Adrenal incidentalomas are accidentally discovered through radiologic imaging, and subsequent testing can confirm a pheochromocytoma. Here, we present a case of a 67-year-old female found to have an adrenal incidentaloma on kidney ultrasound (US) after presenting to the emergency room (ER) due to nausea. She had minimally elevated creatinine at the ER. At her follow-up with her primary care provider (PCP), a kidney US was ordered and showed a probable right suprarenal mass. Further abdominal computed tomography (CT) and abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that the mass was indeed adrenal, but its etiology is considered indeterminant. Although asymptomatic, further biochemical tests showed elevated serum and urine metanephrines and normetanephrines. Together, these findings revealed that the adrenal mass was likely a silent pheochromocytoma. She underwent a successful right adrenalectomy with pathology confirming pheochromocytoma. This case adds to the literature on the existence of silent pheochromocytomas and highlights the importance of following up on any abnormal findings with a PCP. This patient, although asymptomatic from her pheochromocytoma, needed surgery to prevent possible pheochromocytoma crises, which could cause cardiovascular complications and even death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased catecholamines contribute to heightened cardiovascular reactivity and behavioral deficits after traumatic brain injury (TBI); adrenergic receptor blockade has limited success in reducing adverse sequelae of TBI. Injury-induced increases in the synthesis of catecholamines could contribute to adverse outcomes in TBI. Inhibition of catecholamine synthesis with alpha-methyltyrosine (αMT) could offer a benefit after TBI. METHODS Original research trial in mice randomized to αMT (50 mg·kg -1 ·d -1 ) or vehicle for 1 week after TBI induced by controlled cortical impact. Primary outcomes of cardiovascular reactivity and behavioral deficits were assessed after 1 week. Secondary outcomes included blood brain barrier permeability and quantification of gene transcription whose products determine intraneuronal chloride concentrations, the release of catecholamines, and activation of the sympathetic nervous system. These genes were the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor ("Adra2c"), the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter ("Nkcc1"), and the potassium chloride cotransporter ("Kcc2"). We also assessed the effect of TBI and αMT on the neuronal chloride/bicarbonate exchanger ("Ae3"). RESULTS Traumatic brain injury-induced increases in blood pressure and cardiac reactivity were blocked by αMT. Inhibition of catecholamine synthesis decreased blood brain barrier leakage and improved behavioral outcomes after TBI. Traumatic brain injury diminished the transcription of Adra2c and enhanced expression of Nkcc1 while reducing Kcc2 transcription; αMT prevented the induction of the Nkcc1 by TBI without reversing the effects of TBI on Kcc2 expression; αMT also diminished Ae3 transcription. CONCLUSION Traumatic brain injury acutely increases cardiovascular reactivity and induces behavioral deficits in an αMT-sensitive manner, most likely by inducing Nkcc1 gene transcription. Alpha-methyltyrosine may prove salutary in the treatment of TBI by attenuating the enhanced expression of Nkcc1, minimizing blood brain barrier leakage, and diminishing central catecholamine and sympathetic output. We also found an unreported relationship between Kcc2 and the chloride/bicarbonate exchanger, which should be considered in the design of trials planned to manipulate central intraneuronal chloride concentrations following acute brain injury.

Abstract
Pain is one of the predominant and troublesome symptoms that burden cancer patients during their whole disease trajectory: adequate pain management is a fundamental component of cancer care. Opioid are the cornerstone of cancer pain relief therapy and their skillful management must be owned by physicians approaching cancer pain patients. In light of the increased survival of cancer patients due to advances in therapy, deprescription should be considered as a part of the opioid prescribing regime, from therapy initiation, dose titration, and changing or adding drugs, to switching or ceasing. In clinical practice, opioid tapering after pain remission could be challenging due to withdrawal symptoms' onset. Animal models and observations in patients with opioid addiction suggested that somatic and motivational symptoms accompanying opioid withdrawal are secondary to the activation of stress-related process (mainly cortisol and catecholamines mediated). In this narrative review, we highlight how the lack of validated guidelines and tools for cancer patients can lead to a lower diagnostic awareness of opioid-related disorders, increasing the risk of developing withdrawal symptoms. We also described an experience-based approach to opioid withdrawal, starting from a case-report of a symptomatic patient with a history of metastatic pheochromocytoma-paraganglioma.

Abstract
Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) require prompt consideration and efficient diagnosis and treatment to minimize associated morbidity and mortality. Once considered, appropriate biochemical testing is key to diagnosis. Advances in understanding catecholamine metabolism have clarified why measurements of the O-methylated catecholamine metabolites rather than the catecholamines themselves are important for effective diagnosis. These metabolites, normetanephrine and metanephrine, produced respectively from norepinephrine and epinephrine, can be measured in plasma or urine, with choice according to available methods or presentation of patients. For patients with signs and symptoms of catecholamine excess, either test will invariably establish the diagnosis, whereas the plasma test provides higher sensitivity than urinary metanephrines for patients screened due to an incidentaloma or genetic predisposition, particularly for small tumors or in patients with an asymptomatic presentation. Additional measurements of plasma methoxytyramine can be important for some tumors, such as paragangliomas, and for surveillance of patients at risk of metastatic disease. Avoidance of false-positive test results is best achieved by plasma measurements with appropriate reference intervals and preanalytical precautions, including sampling blood in the fully supine position. Follow-up of positive results, including optimization of preanalytics for repeat tests or whether to proceed directly to anatomic imaging or confirmatory clonidine tests, depends on the test results, which can also suggest likely size, adrenal vs extra-adrenal location, underlying biology, or even metastatic involvement of a suspected tumor. Modern biochemical testing now makes diagnosis of PPGL relatively simple. Integration of artificial intelligence into the process should make it possible to fine-tune these advances.

Abstract
Catecholamine metabolites are not only involved in primary metabolism, but also in secondary metabolism, serving a diverse array of physiologically and biochemically important functions. Melanin, which originates from dopa and dopamine, found in the hair, eye, and skin of all animals, is an important biopolymeric pigment. It provides protection against damaging solar radiation to animals. N-Acetyldopamine and N-β-alanyldopamine play a crucial role in the hardening of the exoskeletons of all insects. In addition, insects and other arthropods utilize the melanogenic process as a key component of their defense systems. Many marine organisms utilize dopyl peptides and proteins as bonding materials to adhere to various substrata. Moreover, the complex dopa derivatives that are precursors to the formation of the exoskeletons of numerous marine organisms also exhibit antibiotic properties. The biochemistry and mechanistic transformations of different catecholamine derivatives to produce various biomaterials with antioxidant, antibiotic, crosslinking, and gluing capabilities are highlighted. These reactivities are exhibited through the transient and highly reactive quinones, quinone methides, and quinone methide imine amide intermediates, as well as chelation to metal ions. A careful consideration of the reactivities summarized in this review will inspire numerous strategies for synthesizing novel biomaterials for future medical and industrial use.

Abstract
Fungal pathogens of the Cryptococcus neoformans species complex (C. neoformans SC) are a major cause of fungal meningitis in immunocompromised individuals. As with other melanotic microorganisms associated with human diseases, the cell-wall-associated melanin of C. neoformans SC is a major virulence factor that contributes to its ability to evade host immune responses. The levels of melanin substrate and the regulation of melanin formation could be influenced by the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Moreover, recent studies show that C. neoformans infections cause dysbiosis in the human gut microbiome. In this review, we discuss the potential association between cryptococcal meningitis and the gut microbiome. Additionally, the significant potential of targeting the gut microbiome in the diagnosis and treatment of this debilitating disease is emphasized.

Abstract
In the current study, extensive Orbitrap mass spectrometry analysis was conducted for skin strain Micrococcus luteus C01 planktonic cultures and biofilms after 24 h and 72 h of incubation either in the presence of epinephrine or without any implementations. The investigation revealed the complex and conditionally extensive effect of epinephrine at concentrations closer to normal blood plasma concentrations on both planktonic cultures and biofilms of skin strain M. luteus C01. The concentrations of hundreds of proteins changed during the shift from planktonic growth mode to biofilm and hundreds of proteins were downregulated or upregulated in the presence of epinephrine. Ribosomal, TCA, and cell division proteins appear to be the most altered in their amounts in the presence of the hormone. Potentially, the regulatory mechanism of this process is connected with c-di-GMP and histidine kinases, which were affected by epinephrine in different samples. The phenomenon of epinephrine-based biofilm regulation in M. luteus C01 has wide implications for microbial endocrinology and other research areas.

Abstract
Background Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is usually mediated by the autonomic nerve and most often happens in the upright position. However, it can also occur in other positions and can be relieved by lying down while likely to have another attack after relief. In the current study, we aim to evaluate the predictive effect of catecholamines and electrolytes on the recurrence of OI in children. Materials and methods Children who were diagnosed with vasovagal syncope (VVS), postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and VVS combined with POTS were enrolled in this retrospective study and were followed up after 1-year physical treatment. Catecholamines in urine collected within 24 h, renin, angiotensin II, aldosterone in plasma, and electrolytes in both blood and urine collected in the morning were tested. A multivariate analysis and a receiver operating characteristic curve were used to validate the prediction effect. Results In the VVS cohort, the 24 h urine adrenaline (AD) and norepinephrine (NE) levels of the non-recurrence group were lower than the 24 h urine AD and NE levels of the recurrence group, with a significant difference of P < 0.05. A different content can also be witnessed in the POTS cohort that the urine of the non-recurrence group contained lower sodium and chlorine. As for the VVS + POTS cohort, the non-recurrence group has lower AD and NE levels and higher potassium and phosphorus levels in urine, the difference of which proved prominent as well. Conclusion The study provides further evidence that AD, NE, and electrolytes in urine are promising factors that are closely related to the recurrence of OI in children. The integrated evaluation system merging AD and NE may have better predictive ability.

Abstract
Tactical occupations regularly encounter life-threatening situations while on duty. Although these occupations are often trained to utilize slow breathing (SB) during intense stress, there is no evidence supporting the effects on markers of stress in response to a virtual reality active shooter training drill (VR-ASD). The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of acute SB on biomarkers of stress in response to a VR-ASD. Seventy-nine (n = 79) subjects performed either slow breathing method 1 (SB1), slow breathing method 2 (SB2), or normal breathing (control) for five minutes, both pre- and post-VR-ASD. Saliva samples were analyzed for stress markers, including α-amylase (sAA) and secretory immunoglobulin-A (SIgA). Both methods of SB resulted in significantly lower sAA concentrations at 5 (p < 0.001) and 30 min post-VR-ASD (SB1: p = 0.008; SB2: p < 0.001) compared to the control. In the control condition, the sAA concentrations were significantly elevated 5 min post-VR-ASD (p < 0.001) but did not change across time in SB1 or SB2 (p > 0.05). Thus, both SB1 and SB2 reduced the sAA response and resulted in lower concentrations post-VR-ASD. This study was pre-registered as a clinical trial ("Impact of Breathing Interventions on Stress Markers"; NCT05825846).

Abstract
Certain events can cause distress in cattle. In Spain, there is a sport similar to rodeo called persecution and takedown, in which calves are harassed and knocked down by riders. In this study, the physiological stress response of calves (n = 260) is assessed by measuring hormonal physiological parameters. Salivary samples were collected from Salers (n = 110) and Lidia (n = 150) calves before, during, and after the persecution and takedown event. The hormones epinephrine, cortisol, serotonin, and dopamine were determined in saliva samples using enzyme-immunoassay techniques. The results obtained revealed that epinephrine and cortisol levels increased during the event in Salers calves, with a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the case of epinephrine, although after the event, these values returned to their initial state. Therefore, this sport supposes an assumable punctual stressor stimulus for the animal. In contrast, in Lidia calves, cortisol and epinephrine levels decreased, with a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the case of cortisol, which may be related to the temperament of this breed and facing a stressful situation in a different manner. This is confirmed by serotonin and dopamine levels that were altered in Lidia calves with respect to the other group studied. In conclusion, the sport of persecution and takedown produces a physiological response of adaptive stress assumable for the animals.

Abstract
Catecholaminergic neuron clusters are among the most conserved neuromodulatory systems in vertebrates, yet some clusters show significant evolutionary dynamics. Because of their disease relevance, special attention has been paid to mammalian midbrain dopaminergic systems, which have important functions in motor control, reward, motivation, and cognitive function. In contrast, midbrain dopaminergic neurons in teleosts were thought to be lost secondarily. Here, we generated a CRISPR/Cas9-based knock-in transgene at the th locus, which allows the expression of the Q-system transcription factor QF2 linked to the Tyrosine hydroxylase open reading frame by an E2A peptide. The QF2 knock-in allele still expresses Tyrosine hydroxylase in catecholaminergic neurons. Coexpression analysis of QF2 driven expression of QUAS fluorescent reporter transgenes and of th mRNA and Th protein revealed that essentially all reporter expressing cells also express Th/th. We also observed a small group of previously unidentified cells expressing the reporter gene in the midbrain and a larger group close to the midbrain-hindbrain boundary. However, we detected no expression of the catecholaminergic markers ddc, slc6a3, or dbh in these neurons, suggesting that they are not actively transmitting catecholamines. The identified neurons in the midbrain are located in a GABAergic territory. A coexpression analysis with anatomical markers revealed that Th-expressing neurons in the midbrain are located in the tegmentum and those close to the midbrain-hindbrain boundary are located in the hindbrain. Our data suggest that zebrafish may still have some evolutionary remnants of midbrain dopaminergic neurons.

Abstract
Context Paragangliomas located within the pericardium represent a rare yet challenging clinical situation. Objective The current analysis aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of cardiac paragangliomas, with emphasis on the diagnostic approach, genetic background, and multidisciplinary management. Methods Twenty-four patients diagnosed with cardiac paraganglioma (PGL) in Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing, China, between 2003 and 2021 were identified. Clinical data was collected from medical record. Genetic screening and succinate dehydrogenase subunit B immunohistochemistry were performed in 22 patients. Results The median age at diagnosis was 38 years (range 11-51 years), 8 patients (33%) were females, and 4 (17%) had familial history. Hypertension and/or symptoms related to catecholamine secretion were present in 22 (92%) patients. Excess levels of catecholamines and/or metanephrines were detected in 22 (96%) of the 23 patients who have completed biochemical testing. Cardiac PGLs were localized with 131I-metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy in 11/22 (50%), and 99mTc-hydrazinonicotinyl-tyr3-octreotide scintigraphy in 24/24 (100%) patients. Genetic testing identified germline SDHx mutations in 13/22 (59%) patients, while immunohistochemistry revealed succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) deficiency in tumors from 17/22 (77%) patients. All patients were managed by a multidisciplinary team through medical preparation, surgery, and follow-up. Twenty-three patients received surgical treatment and perioperative death occurred in 2 cases. Overall, 21 patients were alive at follow-up (median 7.0 years, range 0.6-18 years). Local recurrence or metastasis developed in 3 patients, all of whom had SDH-deficient tumors. Conclusion Cardiac PGLs can be diagnosed based on clinical manifestations, biochemical tests, and appropriate imaging studies. Genetic screening, multidisciplinary approach, and long-term follow-up are crucial in the management of this disease.

Abstract
We reported a case of pheochromocytoma with initial presentation of cardiac arrest. The patient underwent implantable cardioverter defibrillator for primary prevention but subsequently experienced repeated implantable cardioverter defibrillator shocks and syncopal episodes. A mass was found in the adrenal gland by CT, which was confirmed by anatomopathological analysis of the surgical specimen.

Abstract
Aim To determine the most common indications for measuring metanephrine and normetanephrine in plasma by gender and age and to compare the concentrations of metanephrine and normetanephrine by indication, gender and age. Methods The study was conducted on 224 patients whose plasma metanephrine and normetanephrine concentrations were measured at the Clinical Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics at the University Hospital Centre Osijek for one year, until 1st January 2020. Results The most frequent indications for biochemical testing were adrenal incidentaloma, 138 (6.6 %), and symptoms of pheochromocytoma, 41 (18.3%). Metanephrine concentration was lower in females (p=0.009). No significant correlation was found between age and metanephrine concentration, while age and normetanephrine concentration were positively correlated (p=0.01). Of the 224 patients, only one patient was diagnosed with pheochromocytoma, whose indication for measurement of metanephrine and normetanephrine was adrenal incidentaloma. Conclusion Adrenal incidentalomas and symptoms suggestive of pheochromocytoma are very common in the general population, while the incidence of pheochromocytoma is extremely low. Clear guidelines for the referral of patients for biochemical testing are needed to avoid unnecessary costs and to identify the correct diagnosis promptly.

Abstract
Vasoplegia is a condition characterized by persistent low systemic vascular resistance despite a normal or high cardiac index, resulting in profound and uncontrolled vasodilation. Vasoplegia may occur due to various conditions, including cardiac failure, sepsis, and post-cardiac surgery. In the cardiac cohort, multiple risk factors for vasoplegia have been identified. Several factors contribute to the pathophysiology of this condition, and various mechanisms have been proposed, including nitric oxide, adenosine, prostanoids, endothelins, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and hydrogen sulfide. Early identification and prompt management of vasoplegia is crucial to prevent development of shock. This review expands upon the different vasopressors used in management of vasoplegia, including catecholamines such as norepinephrine, dopamine, epinephrine, phenylephrine, and other agents including vasopressin, methylene blue, angiotensin II, hydroxocobalamin, vitamin C, thiamine, and corticosteroids (ie, hydrocortisone). It also emphasizes the importance of conducting further research and making advancements in treatment regimens for vasoplegia.

Abstract
Poor quality of sleep leads to an increase in severity of the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome and vice versa. The aim of this study was to determine if the poor perceived sleep quality in FM patients could be corroborated by objective physiological determinations. Perceived sleep quality was evaluated (through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) in 68 FM patients compared to an age-matched reference group of 68 women without FM. Objective sleep quality (measured using accelerometry), and systemic concentrations of sleep-related hormones (catecholamines, oxytocin, serotonin, and melatonin) were evaluated in two representative groups from the reference control group (n = 11) and FM patients (n = 11). FM patients reported poorer subjective sleep quality compared to the reference group. However, no significant differences were found in accelerometry parameters, except for a delay in getting in and out of bed. In addition, FM patients showed no significant differences in oxytocin concentration and adrenaline/noradrenaline ratio, as well as a lower serotonin/melatonin ratio. Poor perception of sleep quality in FM patients does not correspond to objective determinations. A dysregulation of the stress response could be associated with the delay in their resting circadian rhythm and difficulty falling asleep. This would be the cause that justifies the perceived lack of rest and the fatigue they feel when waking up.

Abstract
Communication between the ovaries and the central nervous system occurs by peripheral innervation through the celiac plexus, superior ovarian nerve, and ovarian plexus nerve. The vagus nerve is involved in regulating the ovaries, but the neuroanatomical pathway that links them is not clear. Adult female rats were used for gross anatomy, acetylcholinesterase histochemistry, and the immunofluorescence analysis of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH). The results obtained indicate that the right vagus nerve (RVN) travels parallel and caudal to the esophagus, where three nerve branches were identified. Also, a right vagal plexus (RVP) formed by microganglia was described, establishing communication with the celiac plexus, and was mainly reactive to tyrosine hydroxylase (TH); some serotoninergic and cholinergic neurons were also found. The left vagus nerve (LVN) travels over the esophagus, bifurcates before its insertion into the stomach and enters the RCG. This neuroanatomical and biochemical description of the RVN and LVN in the rat suggests the RVP is formed by presynaptic catecholaminergic terminals and cholinergic neurons. This information could support detailed studies of communication between the vagus nerve and the ovaries and identify the type of neural signaling involved in abdominal control of the vagus nerve.
