Abstract
Chronic lower leg ulcers (LLUs) are a very common and associated with a high subjective and economic burden. They can be caused by a variety of factors. We have observed a common clinical feature in patients suffering from LLUs, which ultimately proved to be basal cell carcinomas (BCCs). We have nicknamed this sign "the pink doughnut sign." The pink doughnut sign can aid in the early recognition of such BCCs, which is crucial to prevent unnecessary suffering, treatment costs, and poor local outcomes.

Abstract
Cutaneous angiosarcoma (CAS) is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma of vascular endothelial origin. Paclitaxel (PTX) and docetaxel (DTX) are used as systemic chemotherapy; however, chemoresistance often occurs in CAS. Switching one taxane to the other (i.e., PTX to DTX, or vice versa) is an option when the first taxane is no longer effective in malignant cancers such as ovarian or breast cancer. However, the efficacy of the same strategy in CAS has not been reported. Herein, we report the clinical response of switching one taxane-based chemotherapy to the other in CAS patients with resistance to the first taxane. Twelve CAS patients were included for analyses. In all patients, the median overall survival from the start of the first taxane treatment was 29.0 months (range, 6.47-58.5). During the first taxane, the median PFS for all patients was 5.96 months (1.81-47.1). Similarly, the median (range) PFS for all patients during the second taxane was 5.87 months (1.60-18.2). Furthermore, the median OS was 22.7 months (PTX to DTX) and 39.5 months (DTX to PTX) (p = 0.307). The median PFS during the first taxane was 5.14 (PTX to DTX) and 12.5 months (DTX to PTX), respectively (p = 0.380). The median PFS during the second taxane was 3.5 (PTX to DTX) and 7.1 months (DTX to PTX), respectively (p = 0.906). The objective response rate, defined as the sum of complete response (CR) and partial response (PR) rates, was 16.7%. The disease control rate, defined as the sum of CR, PR, and stable disease rates, was 50%. The frequency of adverse events during the second taxane was the same between the two groups (p > 0.999). Our report suggests that CAS patients could benefit from the second taxane treatment if the tumor is resistant to the first taxane.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcriptional repressor GATA binding 1 (TRPS1) is a transcription factor recently shown to play a role in the development of breast and liver cancer. Here, we evaluate TRPS1 immunoexpression in normal skin tissues and various cutaneous tumors. METHODS TRPS1 immunohistochemistry was performed in 109 cases of primary cutaneous tumors and 19 cases of metastatic carcinomas. TRPS1 expression was also evaluated in the normal skin tissues. RESULTS The normal epidermis was TRPS1-. In contrast, the eccrine apparatus, epithelial compartment of the hair follicles, hair papilla, sebaceous glands, and anogenital mammary-like glands were TRPS1+. In primary cutaneous tumors, TRPS1 positivity varied in poroma (2/3), nodular hidradenoma (4/5), spiradenoma (4/4), cutaneous mixed tumor (5/5), trichilemmal cyst (7/8), proliferating trichilemmal tumor (1/3), pilomatricoma (9/9), sebaceoma (2/5), extramammary Paget disease (13/13), sebaceous carcinoma (2/2), actinic keratosis (3/10), Bowen disease (7/12), and squamous cell carcinoma (1/5) cases. All cases of seborrheic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma were TRPS1-. All metastatic breast carcinoma cases (8/8) were highly positive for TRPS1, while all but one of the other metastatic tumor cases were TRPS1-. CONCLUSIONS TRPS1 immunoexpression was observed in several skin appendages and cutaneous tumors.

Abstract
Most skin tumors are not fatal, but if not treated in a timely manner, they can lead to significant morbidity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in order to create more capacities for the treatment of COVID-19-positive patients as well as to contain the spread of the virus, the healthcare system was reorganized worldwide, leading to decreased access to preventive screening programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on healthcare accessibility to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma patients in Serbia. This retrospective study was conducted at the Clinic for Burns, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery, University Clinical Center of Serbia in Belgrade. Patient demographics and pathohistological findings of tumors of patients living in and outside the capital in the period before, during, and after the pandemic were compared. The two groups did not show any differences regarding the largest tumor diameter prior and during the pandemic; however, this difference became extremely noticeable after the pandemic (15 mm vs. 27 mm; p < 0.001). While cSCCs are commonly slow-growing tumors, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is not negligible. This study found a population at a significant risk of cSCC metastasis, with additional evidence likely to emerge in the upcoming years.

Abstract
Dermoscopic features of actinic keratosis (AK) have been widely studied, but there is still little evidence for their diagnostic accuracy. Our study investigates whether established dermoscopic criteria are reliable predictors in differentiating non-pigmented actinic keratosis (NPAK) from pigmented actinic keratosis (PAK). For this purpose, dermoscopic images of 83 clinically diagnosed AK (45 NPAK, 38PAK) were examined, and the sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were assessed. Features with statistical significance were the red pseudo-network (p = 0.02) for NPAK and the pigmented pseudo-network (p < 0.001) with a pigment intensity value even less than 10% for PAK (p = 0.001). Pigmented pseudo-network (Se: 89%, Sp: 77%, PPV: 77%, NPV: 89%) with a pigment intensity value of more than 10% (Se: 90%, Sp: 86%, PPV: 79%, NPV: 93%) had excellent diagnostic accuracy for PAK. Scale and widened follicular openings with yellowish dots surrounded by white circles were equally represented in both variants of AK. Linear wavy vessels and shiny streaks were more prominently observed in NPAK, as were rosettes in PAK, but these results failed to meet statistical significance. The red starburst pattern was near statistical significance for PAK. Therefore, pigmentation is the strongest dermoscopic predictor for the differentiation between NPAK and PAK.

Abstract
TRPCs (transient receptor potential classical or cation channels) play a crucial role in tumor biology, especially in the Ca2+ homeostasis in cancer cells. TRPC4 is a pH-sensitive member of this family of proteins. As solid tumors exhibit an inversed pH-gradient with lowered extracellular and increased intracellular pH, both contributing to tumor progression, TRPC4 might be a signaling molecule in the altered tumor microenvironment. This is the first study to investigate the expression profiles of TRPC4 in common skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), malignant melanoma (MM) and nevus cell nevi (NCN). We found that all SCCs, NCNs, and MMs show positive TRPC4-expression, while BCCs do only in about half of the analyzed samples. These data render TRPC4 an immunohistochemical marker to distinguish SCC and BCC, and this also gives rise to future studies investigating the role of TRPC4 in tumor progression, and especially metastasis as BCCs very rarely spread and are mostly negative for TRPC4.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer and originates from the basal layer of the epidermis. It is most common in the head and neck region. It usually grows slowly and rarely metastasizes. The gold standard treatment is surgical excision. AIMS In this study, it was aimed to discuss the demographic and medical data of patients treated with the diagnosis of BCC. PATIENTS/METHODS Sixty-seven tumors of 55 patients who were operated for BCC in our clinic between 2016 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic and medical data were analyzed. RESULTS The tumor was most commonly localized to the nose. The most common (50%) histological type was the nodular type. Recurrence occurred in one of our patients (1.5%). Surgical margin positivity was observed in six patients. CONCLUSIONS Basal cell carcinomas are most common in the head and neck region. Its frequency increases with age and is more common in men. In our patients, 98.5% of the tumors were located in the head and neck, and 89.5% were over 60 years of age. Nodular is the most common type of BCC, and the most common nodular type was detected in our study. Surgical margin positivity is observed between 9% and 37.2% after surgery, and the recurrence rate is around 5%. In our study, surgical margin positivity was 9% and recurrence was 1.5%. Evaluating the excision margins carefully in a well-lit environment and taking into account cosmetic concerns, obtaining an adequately intact surgical margin in one go may lead to the ideal treatment result.

Abstract
Licensed L1-VLP-based immunizations against high-risk mucosal human papillomavirus (HPV) types have been a great success in reducing anogenital cancers, although they are limited in their cross-protection against HPV types not covered by the vaccine. Further, their utility in protection against cutaneous HPV types, of which some contribute to non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) development, is rather low. Next generation vaccines achieve broadly cross-protective immunity against highly conserved sequences of L2. In this exploratory study, we tested two novel HPV vaccine candidates, HPV16 RG1-VLP and CUT-PANHPVAX, in the preclinical natural infection model Mastomys coucha. After immunization with either vaccines, a mock control or MnPV L1-VLPs, the animals were experimentally infected and monitored. Besides vaccine-specific seroconversion against HPV L2 peptides, the animals also developed cross-reactive antibodies against the cutaneous Mastomys natalensis papillomavirus (MnPV) L2, which were cross-neutralizing MnPV pseudovirions in vitro. Further, both L2-based vaccines also conferred in vivo protection as the viral loads in plucked hair after experimental infection were lower compared to mock-vaccinated control animals. Importantly, the formation of neutralizing antibodies, whether directed against L1-VLPs or L2, was able to prevent skin tumor formation and even microscopical signs of MnPV infection in the skin. For the first time, our study shows the proof-of-principle of next generation L2-based vaccines even across different PV genera in an infection animal model with its genuine PV. It provides fundamental insights into the humoral immunity elicited by L2-based vaccines against PV-induced skin tumors, with important implications to the design of next generation HPV vaccines.

Abstract
Cutaneous round cell neoplasms (RCNs) are among the most common skin tumors of dogs. Although a diagnosis can be made in most cases following the examination of H&E-stained routine samples, less-differentiated neoplasms can exhibit overlapping morphologic features that may be challenging to the pathologist, and require immunohistochemistry or molecular testing to reach a final diagnosis. Many patients with cutaneous RCNs are initially seen by a general practitioner and are not referred to a veterinary teaching hospital until a diagnosis has been made. For this reason, anatomic pathology residents at some academic or other training institutions may not be exposed frequently to RCNs during the surgical biopsy service as part of their residency training. In an attempt to fill that gap, here we review the key routine histologic features of canine cutaneous RCNs.

Abstract
The objective of this review was to summarize published radiomics studies dealing with infradiaphragmatic cancers, blood malignancies, melanoma, and musculoskeletal cancers, and assess their quality. PubMed database was searched from January 1990 to February 2022 for articles performing radiomics on PET imaging of at least 1 specified tumor type. Exclusion criteria includd: non-oncological studies; supradiaphragmatic tumors; reviews, comments, cases reports; phantom or animal studies; technical articles without a clinically oriented question; studies including <30 patients in the training cohort. The review database contained PMID, first author, year of publication, cancer type, number of patients, study design, independent validation cohort and objective. This database was completed twice by the same person; discrepant results were resolved by a third reading of the articles. A total of 162 studies met inclusion criteria; 61 (37.7%) studies included >100 patients, 13 (8.0%) were prospective and 61 (37.7%) used an independent validation set. The most represented cancers were esophagus, lymphoma, and cervical cancer (n = 24, n = 24 and n = 19 articles, respectively). Most studies focused on 18F-FDG, and prognostic and response to treatment objectives. Although radiomics and artificial intelligence are technically challenging, new contributions and guidelines help improving research quality over the years and pave the way toward personalized medicine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin tumours are among the cancer types most sensitive to immunotherapy, due to their unique immunogenic features including skin-associated lymphoid tissue, high mutational load, overexpression of tumour antigens, and high frequency of viral antigens. Despite this high immunotherapy response rate, however, ultimately most skin tumours develop similar treatment resistance to most other malignant tumours, which highlights the need for in-depth study of mechanisms of response and resistance to immunotherapy. METHODS A bibliographic review of the most recent publications regarding currently in use and emerging biomarkers on skin tumors has been done. RESULTS Predictive biomarkers of treatment response, biomarkers that warn of possible resistance, and emerging markers, the majority of a systemic nature, are described. Including factors affecting not only genomics, but also the immune system, nervous system, microbiota, tumour microenvironment, metabolism and stress. CONCLUSIONS For accurate diagnosis of tumour type, knowledge of its functional mechanisms and selection of a comprehensive therapeutic protocol, this inclusive view of biology, health and disease is fundamental. This field of study could also become a valuable source of practical information applicable to other areas of oncology and immunotherapy.

Abstract
Cutaneous metastasis from solid tumors is a rare event and usually represents a late occurrence in the natural history of an advanced visceral malignancy. Rarely, cutaneous metastasis has been described in colorectal cancer patients. The most frequent cutaneous site of colorectal metastasis is the surgical scar in the abdomen following the removal of the primary malignancy, followed by the extremities, perineum, head, neck, and penis. Metastases to the thigh and back of the trunk are anecdotical. Dermatological diagnosis of cutaneous metastasis can be quite complex, especially in unusual sites, such as in the facial skin or thorax and in cases of single cutaneous lesions since metastasis from colorectal cancer is not usually the first clinical hypothesis, leading to misdiagnosis. To date, due to the rarity of cutaneous metastasis from colorectal cancer, little evidence, most of which is based on case reports and very small case series, is currently available. Therefore, a better understanding of the clinic-pathological characteristics of this unusual metastatic site represents an unmet clinical need. We present a large series of 29 cutaneous metastases from colorectal cancer with particular concerns regarding anatomic localization and the time of onset with respect to primitive colorectal cancer and visceral metastases.

Abstract
This study reports a case of superficial CD34-positive fibroblastic tumor (SCPFT) in a child and analyze the major known clinicopathological features of SCPFT and other skin mesenchymal tumors, contributing to an accurate diagnosis of this rare disease. We summarize the clinicopathologic features of an 8-year-old girl who was diagnosed with SCPFT and 46 previously reported SCPFT cases. Post-operative histopathologic examination of the current case showed the tumor lesion was well-circumscribed; tumor cells were spindled-to-polygonal with a fascicular pattern; most nuclei displayed hyperchromasia and low mitotic rate; intranuclear pseudoinclusions could be found; and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and partial myxoid stroma were observed. Immunohistochemistry revealed strong and diffuse CD34-positivity, vimentin staining positively but no S-100, SMA, NSE, CD31, desmin, cytokeratin, STAT6, β-catenin, MDM2, or ERG expression. The Ki-67 and CD68 labeling indexes were approximately 1%. There were no rearrangements of PDGFB or PRDM10 tested by FISH. After surgical resection, the patient had no signs of recurrence or metastasis at a 6-month follow-up. The present case is the first that describes SCPFT in children and has significant clinical implications. SCPFT should be differentiated from other skin mesenchymal tumors. The presented compilation of all so far published SCPFT cases will help in diagnosing successfully SCPFT and increasing awareness of this tumor to guide clinical practice.

Abstract
The current knowledge about the mechanisms of action of light-based treatments (chiefly photodynamic therapy and phototherapy) in skin diseases leans to the possible involvement of epigenetic and oxidative stress mechanisms. To better understand and exploit, to the fullest, these relatively safe and reproducible treatments, several studies have focused on miRNAs, small non-encoding RNAs (22–24 nucleotides), after light-based treatments. The current narrative review focused on 25 articles. A meta-analysis was not deemed appropriate. The results gather the most recurrent skin-related miRNAs up- or downregulated after light treatment. Five of these, miR-21, -29, -125, -145 and -155, are either the most consistently related to efficacy/resistance to treatment or identified as helpful diagnostic tools. A specific class of miRNAs (angioMIRs) requires further studies. Future treatments and imaging techniques could benefit greatly from the use of antagomirs as a possible co-adjuvant therapy along with light-based treatments.

We studied CD34+ stromal cells/telocytes (CD34+SCs/TCs) in pathologic skin, after briefly examining them in normal conditions. We confirm previous studies by other authors in the normal dermis regarding CD34+SC/TC characteristics and distribution around vessels, nerves and cutaneous annexes, highlighting their practical absence in the papillary dermis and presence in the bulge region of perifollicular groups of very small CD34+ stromal cells. In non-tumoral skin pathology, we studied examples of the principal histologic patterns in which CD34+SCs/TCs have (1) a fundamental pathophysiological role, including (a) fibrosing/sclerosing diseases, such as systemic sclerosis, with loss of CD34+SCs/TCs and presence of stromal cells co-expressing CD34 and αSMA, and (b) metabolic degenerative processes, including basophilic degeneration of collagen, with stromal cells/telocytes in close association with degenerative fibrils, and cutaneous myxoid cysts with spindle-shaped, stellate and bulky vacuolated CD34+ stromal cells, and (2) a secondary reactive role, encompassing dermatitis—e.g., interface (erythema multiforme), acantholytic (pemphigus, Hailey–Hailey disease), lichenoid (lichen planus), subepidermal vesicular (bullous pemphigoid), psoriasiform (psoriasis), granulomatous (granuloma annulare)—vasculitis (leukocytoclastic and lymphocytic vasculitis), folliculitis, perifolliculitis and inflammation of the sweat and sebaceous glands (perifolliculitis and rosacea) and infectious dermatitis (verruca vulgaris). In skin tumor and tumor-like conditions, we studied examples of those in which CD34+ stromal cells are (1) the neoplastic component (dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, sclerotic fibroma and solitary fibrous tumor), (2) a neoplastic component with varying presentation (fibroepithelial polyp and superficial myxofibrosarcoma) and (3) a reactive component in other tumor/tumor-like cell lines, such as those deriving from vessel periendothelial cells (myopericytoma), epithelial cells (trichoepithelioma, nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn and seborrheic keratosis), Merkel cells (Merkel cell carcinoma), melanocytes (dermal melanocytic nevi) and Schwann cells (neurofibroma and granular cell tumor).

Abstract
The high incidence of sunlight-induced human skin cancers reveals a need for more effective photosensitizing agents. In this study, we compared the efficacy of prophylactic photodynamic therapy (PDT) when methylene blue (MB), riboflavin (RF), or methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) were used as photosensitizers. All mice in four groups of female C3.Cg/TifBomTac hairless immunocompetent mice (N = 100) were irradiated with three standard erythema doses of solar-simulated ultraviolet radiation (UVR) thrice weekly. Three groups received 2 × 2 prophylactic PDT treatments (days 45 + 52 and 90 + 97). The PDT treatments consisted of topical administration of 16% MAL, 20% MB, or 20% RF, and subsequent illumination that matched the photosensitizers’ absorption spectra. Control mice received no PDT. We recorded when the first, second, and third skin tumors developed. The pattern of tumor development after MB-PDT or RF-PDT was similar to that observed in irradiated control mice (p > 0.05). However, the median times until the first, second, and third skin tumors developed in mice given MAL-PDT were significantly delayed, compared with control mice (256, 265, and 272 vs. 215, 222, and 230 days, respectively; p < 0.001). Only MAL-PDT was an effective prophylactic treatment against UVR-induced skin tumors in hairless mice.

Abstract
Background Dermoscopic features of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) have been widely studied, but their accuracy should be further investigated. Objectives This study assessed the diagnostic accuracy of a set of predetermined dermoscopic structures for 3 variants of cSCC, namely Bowen disease, keratoacanthoma and invasive cSCC. Methods Dermoscopic images of 56 histopathologically confirmed cSCC lesions (9 Bowen disease lesions, 7 keratoacanthomas, and 40 invasive cSCCs) were examined, and the diagnostic accuracy of dermoscopic structures was assessed. Discriminative ability of statistically significant positive predictors was determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and defined as an area under the ROC curve >0.700. Results Dermoscopic structures with statistical significance and discriminative ability were: for Bowen disease, clustered glomerular vessels and erosions; for keratoacanthoma, a central keratin plug; and for invasive cSCC, a mixed color of the background. Clustered and glomerular vessels had, for Bowen disease, perfect diagnostic accuracy, with: sensitivity of 88.9% for both features; specificity of 97.9% and 93.6%, respectively; positive predictive value (PPV) of 88.9% and 72.7%, respectively; and negative predictive value (NPV) of 97.8% for both. Erosions had, for BD, high specificity (87.2%) and NPV (91.1%), but low sensitivity (55.6%) and PPV (45.5%). A central keratin plug had, for keratoacanthoma, high specificity (87.8%) and NPV (93.5%), but low sensitivity (57.1%) and PPV (40%). A mixed background color had, for invasive cSCC, high specificity (81.3%) and PPV (89.7%), but low sensitivity (65%) and NPV (48.2%). Conclusion Dermoscopy accurately differentiates BD, through clustered glomerular vessels, from keratoacanthoma and invasive cSCC. Dermoscopic structures of keratoacanthoma and invasive cSCC overlap, and only histopathologic analysis differentiates them precisely.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare genodermatosis with a lifelong propensity to develop malignant skin tumors. METHODS In this retrospective study, 24 XP patients were evaluated with regard to frequency and clinicopathological features of benign and malignant skin tumors. RESULTS Seventeen patients had at least one malignant skin tumor diagnosed: basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in 13 patients (n = 72), basosquamous carcinoma in three patients (n = 4), squamous cell carcinoma in six patients (n = 13), keratoacanthoma in three patients (n = 15), and melanoma in six patients (n = 18). Most melanomas (n = 15) were in situ lesions. Several benign skin tumors were noted such as tricholemmoma (n = 1), trichoepithelioma (n = 1), trichoblastoma (n = 1), follicular infundibulum tumor (n = 1), keratoacanthoma-like follicular lesion (n = 1), adnexal tumors with folliculosebaceous (n = 1) and tricholemmal differentiation (n = 1), and neurofibroma (n = 1). Benign vascular proliferations including pyogenic granulomas (n = 8), widespread telangiectasias, and senile angioma-like lesions were also observed in 3, 5, and 5 patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Similar to many reports, BCC was found to be the most common malignant skin tumor. The high prevalence of benign adnexal tumors of follicular differentiation, some of them showing mixed histopathological features and various vascular proliferations in our series raises the question of whether they indicate a formerly undescribed association with XP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a huge spectrum of skin tumors which can be confused clinically with malignancies, particularly when they are pigmented or inflamed, and histopathological examination of a biopsy specimen is required to establish a definitive diagnosis and to facilitate appropriate intervention and follow up. AIM To evaluate all skin tumors and categorize them according to their origin. METHODS The present study was conducted over a period of 4 years (July 1, 2013 to June 31, 2017) comprising of 1.5 years prospective and 2.5 years retrospective analysis in the departments of Dermatology and Pathology, at a tertiary hospital in North India. All specimens of skin tumors were analyzed grossly and microscopically. Immunohistochemistry was done wherever possible. RESULTS A total of 232 skin tumors were seen; of which 123 cases were benign (53.0%) and 109 cases were malignant (47.0%). The mean age of patients with benign and malignant skin tumors was 40.3 ± 19.9 and 60.8 ± 14.8 years, respectively. The most common site was face (n = 106; 45.7%) followed by limbs (n = 44; 19.0%). The male:female ratio of benign and malignant tumors was 1.01:1 and 1.31:1, respectively. Among the benign tumors, keratinocytic tumors were the commonest (n = 57; 46.3%) followed by the melanocytic tumors (n = 37; 30.1%) and appendageal tumors (n = 29; 23.6%). The most common malignant skin tumors were the keratinocytic tumors (n = 87; 79.8%) followed by 12 cases (11%) of hematolymphoid tumors and five cases (4.6%) each of melanocytic and appendageal tumors. LIMITATIONS The lack of clinical and dermatoscopic correlation and inclusion of retrospective data are the limitations of this study. CONCLUSIONS Skin tumors affect people of all ages. The benign tumors are seen in the younger age group as compared to malignant tumors. Face is the most common site and keratinocytic tumors are the most common skin tumors in both benign and malignant categories.

Abstract
Skin tumors are the most frequent neoplasms worldwide in Caucasian subjects, and UV exposure is one of the most relevant risk factors in their etiology. Cumulative UV exposure is strongly associated with an increased occurrence of both basal and squamous cell carcinomas (i.e. Non melanoma skin cancers - NMSC), while for malignant melanoma the role of UV radiation as risk factors seems more related to intermittent and intense exposures, able to induce repeated sunburns, at young ages. Considering the occupational risk, currently UV radiation, part of the solar radiation (SR) spectrum, is one of the major risks in all jobs including outdoor activities (outdoor work - OW): many studies show high levels of solar UV exposure during OW, nevertheless to date the European, and Italian, legislation on occupational risks prevention does not include specific requirements for SR compleexposure at work, as occupational exposure limits values or workers' health surveillance. This is not coherent with the strong associations showed in scientific literature in particular between the occurrence of NMSC and a history of OW. Accordingly, considering the high exposure levels, the large number of outdoor workers and the strong associations with NMSC, we'd expect a relevant number of occupational skin cancers (OSC) to be reported every year to the national workers' compensation authorities in European countries. Nevertheless, in Italy, as in other European countries, the number of reported UV-induced OSC is much lower than the expected number of OSC, with less than 40 cases reported on average in Italy in last years compared to about a thousand of expected cases incident in outdoor workers per year. An increasing in the reporting of OSC would certainly be important, for the purpose of a better recognition of the real dimension of the phenomenon, and to stimulate the implementation of adequate preventive strategies, in order to guarantee an improved protection of outdoor workers and a more appropriate prevention of the adverse health effects related to solar UV exposure.

Abstract
Simple Summary Skin tumors in ruminants are occasionally reported and are mostly associated with the presence of oncogenic viruses, such as papillomavirus, or to direct skin exposure to solar radiation. Spontaneous tumors with adnexal differentiation, originating from the hair follicle or its associated glands, are even more rarely reported in these species. Investigation of the histological and immunohistochemical features of a trichoblastoma (tumor arising from the hair follicle) detected in the ear of a Sarda breed sheep, allowed for the study of comparative aspects of this tumor with other domestic species in which this neoplasm is commonly reported, such as in dogs and cats, and in human beings. This work contributed to the deepening of the knowledge of ovine spontaneous tumors unrelated to the presence of papillomaviruses. Abstract Skin tumors with adnexal differentiation are commonly reported in dogs and cats, while only anecdotal evidence is available in sheep. Here we illustrate the macroscopic, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of a cutaneous lesion with adnexal differentiation in a 6-year-old female Sarda breed sheep, surgically treated for a horn-like mass located in the left pinna. Additionally, we investigate a possible contribution of Ovine Papillomaviruses (OaPVs). Histologically, the dermis was expanded by an expansive and unencapsulated multilobulated nodule composed of cuboidal to spindle basaloid cells arranged in variably-sized cytokeratins (CK) AE1-AE3, CK 5/6 and CK 34 beta E12, p63—positive winding cords with a characteristic palisade arrangement of neoplastic cells in the periphery of the tumor. Based on these results, the cutaneous neoplasm was diagnosed as a trabecular trichoblastoma with spindle cells and rare structures resembling papillary mesenchymal bodies. Additionally, multiple enlarged sebaceous lobules clustered around dilated ducts suggestive of sebaceous gland hyperplasia were detected near the trichoblastoma. No PV DNA was found in the examined tissues, suggesting that ovine PVs are not involved in the pathogenesis of the present skin tumors with adnexal differentiation. Further investigations and efforts are required to elucidate the prevalence of skin tumors with adnexal differentiation in this species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence of skin findings and skin diseases in adults aged 70 and older, and to study the association between cutaneous diseases and socioeconomic status (SES), sex, and living status in the older population. DESIGN Cross-sectional study of Finnish adults aged 70 to 93 as part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study. SETTINGS Skin examination data were available for 552 adults. MEASUREMENTS A whole-body skin examination was performed by dermatologists. The associations between skin diseases and SES, sex, and living status were analyzed. RESULTS Nearly 80% of the adults had at least one skin disease that required further treatment or follow-up. More than one-third of the study cases (39.1%) had three or more simultaneous skin diseases. Skin diseases were more common in men than in women (P < .001). The most common skin diseases were tinea pedis (48.6%), onychomycosis (29.9%), rosacea (25.6%), actinic keratosis (22.3%), and asteatotic eczema (20.8%). Some association was found between skin diseases and SES and living status. CONCLUSION A whole-body clinical skin examination is important because it reveals important diagnoses.

Abstract
Early detection of skin cancer is essential in order to obtain an improved prognosis. Clinicians need more objective and non-invasive examination methods to support their decision whether to biopsy or not tumoral lesions. These may include several imaging techniques such as dermoscopy, videodermoscopy, also known as sequential digital dermoscopy (SDD), computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), total body photography, imaging and high-frequency ultrasonography (HFUS), reflectance confocal microscopy, multiphoton tomography, electrical impedance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, stepwise two-photon-laser spectroscopy and quantitative dynamic infrared. This review summarizes the current developments in the field of melanocytic lesions, such as naevi and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) imaging techniques. The aim was to collect and analyze data concerning types, indications, advantages and disadvantages of modern imaging techniques for in vivo skin tumor diagnosis. Two main methods were focused on, namely videodermoscopy and HFUS, which can be included in daily dermatologists' practice. In skin tumors HFUS allows the assessment of tumoral lesions with depth smaller than 1.5 cm, being described a correlation between ultrasonographic depth and the histologic index.

Abstract
Superoxide dismutase is widespread in the human body, including skin and its appendages. Here, we focus on human skin copper/zinc superoxide dismutase, the enzyme that protects skin and its appendages against reactive oxygen species. Human skin copper/zinc superoxide dismutase resides in the cytoplasm of keratinocytes, where up to 90% of cellular reactive oxygen species is produced. Factors other than cell type, such as gender, age and diseased state influence its location in skin tissues. We review current knowledge of skin copper/zinc superoxide dismutase including recent studies in an attempt to contribute to solving the question of its remaining unexplained functions. The research described here may be applicable to pathologies associated with oxidative stress. However, recent studies on copper/zinc superoxide dismutase in yeast reveal that its predominant function may be in signaling pathways rather than in scavenging superoxide ions. If confirmed in the skin, novel approaches might be developed to unravel the enzyme's remaining mysteries.

Abstract
Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (pcALCL) is part of a spectrum of cutaneous CD30+ lymphoproliferative disease that also includes lymphomatoid papulosis. It often occurs in elderly patients, presenting at a median age of 60 years, although it may occur at any age. It is a CD30+ T-cell neoplasm composed of large cells with anaplastic, pleomorphic, or immunoblastic morphology, with exclusively cutaneous onset and localization. The clinical course of pcALCL is predominantly indolent. Most elderly patients with lymphoma tend to have a sedentary lifestyle, which has a negative effect on their quality of life (QoL) and survival. Several studies indicate that exercise has a positive impact on QoL because it reduces peak oxygen consumption, improves physical capacity, increases self-esteem, reduces accumulated stress, and promotes relaxation. Therefore, particularly in indolent lymphomas, it is necessary to indicate a program of physical activity to be practiced systematically. Complete surgical excision and local radiotherapy are the first line gold standard in pcALCL with a solitary lesion.

Abstract
The localization of copper and zinc-superoxide dismutase in normal and neoplastic human skin was examined with immunochemical techniques. Skin samples were taken from males and females of different ages, UV exposed and non-exposed areas and basal-/spino-cellular carcinomas. The enzyme was localized diffusely in the cytoplasm and was also found in the nuclei of epidermal cells, endothelial cells and other dermis cell types. The dismutase content in the epidermis was higher in males than females, UV-exposed than non-exposed and young than old people. In the tumors, the enzyme content of the superficial epidermal layers was higher than in the deep tumoral epithelial cells. These data suggest that the localization of Cu, Zn-SOD in skin tissues reflects the gender and age of the subject, the cell types and their normal or diseased state. Further studies based on the investigation of systemic changes of this enzyme in physiological and pathological epidermis could provide additional information on tumor cell generation.

Abstract
Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is a modern imaging technique that enables the in vivo or ex vivo characterization of skin lesions located in the epidermis and superficial dermis with a high quasi-microscopic resolution. Currently, it is considered to be the most promising imaging tool for the evaluation of superficial skin tumors. The in vivo mode adds the advantage of noninvasive, dynamic, in real-time assessment of the tumor associated vasculature and inflammation. It offers the possibility to repeatedly examine the same skin area without causing any damage and to monitor disease progression and treatment outcome. Furthermore, this novel technology allows the evaluation of the entire lesion and can be used to guide biopsies and to define tumor margins before surgical excision or other invasive therapies. CLSM diagnostic features may differentiate between the various histologic subtypes of skin tumors and therefore helps in choosing the best therapeutic approach. In this study, we present the CLSM characteristic features of the most common melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin tumors, as well as future possible CLSM applications in the study of experimental skin tumorigenesis on animal models.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The use of reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) for imaging the skin non-invasively raised constantly during the last decade. One of the main field of application is skin cancer diagnosis, and in particular melanoma diagnosis. Several studies have investigated the diagnostic accuracy of RCM as compared to dermoscopic examination, and its value in enhancing early diagnosis of dermoscopic difficult melanomas. Areas covered: The purpose of this paper was to review the principles behind RCM image acquisition as well as to describe and discuss key RCM features of melanoma. Moreover, we conducted a literature search in order to highlight the current available evidence about RCM sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of melanoma. Expert commentary: During the last decade, we assisted at the increasing interest in non invasive imaging tools for the diagnosis of skin cancer. RCM is one of the most studied of a series of diagnostic methods that are emerging in the field of melanoma imaging. Most probably in the future, RCM will be more frequently available in tertiary referral centres, thus the knowledge of the pros and contra of the tool and its clinical applicability is of upmost importance in order to allow correct referrals with the final aim of improving diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract
Trichilemmal carcinoma is a rare skin tumor that mainly occurs in the elderly (mean age, 71 years) and is localized in the repeatedly sun-exposed areas, most commonly on the face, scalp, neck, and dorsa of the hands. Its differential diagnosis is made with squamous cell skin cancer, clear-cell porocarcinoma, hidradenocarcinoma, and melanoma. The prognosis of trichilemmal carcinoma is most favorable than that of other skin tumors during radical removal. The paper describes a case of an 80-year-old man with long-standing trichilemmal carcinoma of the skin in the area of the shoulder joint, which is concurrent with squamous cell cancer in another area of the skin.

Abstract
Aneurysmal benign fibrous histiocytomas are variants of dermatofibromas. These benign blood-filled lesions can mimic malignancies due to their rapid and recurrent growth. Our patient is a 42-year-old Caucasian female with a past medical history of morbid obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, who presented with a mass on her left shoulder for 5 years' duration. The mass oozed occasionally and would appear to regress but then recur replaced with progressively larger masses. Upon inspection, the patient had a large pedunculated exophytic mass with vascularity. The mass was surgically removed under general anesthesia via wide local excision. Grossly, the excised skin was purple-tinged with an underlying fungating solid mass measuring 8.5 cm. Serial sections revealed a hemorrhagic, spongy, and granular cut surface. Histologically, the epidermis was hyperplastic, with underlying hyaline collagen bundles. The remainder of the mass was chronically inflamed and composed of spindled histiocytes, hemosiderin-laden macrophages, and blood-filled spaces lacking an endothelial lining. There was focal pleomorphism but no significant atypia. Immunohistochemical stains were strongly positive for vimentin and negative for CD31, CD34, and desmin. The overall architecture and immunophenotype are consistent with the diagnosis of aneurysmal benign fibrous histiocytoma.

Abstract
Using Sos1 knockout (Sos1-KO), Sos2-KO, and Sos1/2 double-knockout (Sos1/2-DKO) mice, we assessed the functional role of Sos1 and Sos2 in skin homeostasis under physiological and/or pathological conditions. Sos1 depletion resulted in significant alterations of skin homeostasis, including reduced keratinocyte proliferation, altered hair follicle and blood vessel integrity in dermis, and reduced adipose tissue in hypodermis. These defects worsened significantly when both Sos1 and Sos2 were absent. Simultaneous Sos1/2 disruption led to severe impairment of the ability to repair skin wounds, as well as to almost complete ablation of the neutrophil-mediated inflammatory response in the injury site. Furthermore, Sos1 disruption delayed the onset of tumor initiation, decreased tumor growth, and prevented malignant progression of papillomas in a DMBA (7,12-dimethylbenz[α]anthracene)/TPA (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate)-induced skin carcinogenesis model. Finally, Sos1 depletion in preexisting chemically induced papillomas resulted also in decreased tumor growth, probably linked to significantly reduced underlying keratinocyte proliferation. Our data unveil novel, distinctive mechanistic roles of Sos 1 and Sos2 in physiological control of skin homeostasis and wound repair, as well as in pathological development of chemically induced skin tumors. These observations underscore the essential role of Sos proteins in cellular proliferation and migration and support the consideration of these RasGEFs as potential biomarkers/therapy targets in Ras-driven epidermal tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fast and simple microscopic evaluation of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) together with its subtype determination would accelerate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in dermatology including Mohs surgery. OBJECTIVES Assessing whether simplified 3-criteria-based ex vivo confocal microscopic (CM) examination can reliably predict BCC diagnosis and subtype. Analyzing interobserver agreement between expert and novice examiner. METHODS CM images of 235 skin samples from 150 patients were prospectively evaluated by 2 blinded examiners for the presence of 3 predefined BCC criteria namely presence of tumor mass, peripheral palisading and clefting. RESULTS Out of 235 skin samples 116 showed histological presence of BCC, confocally expert diagnosed a BCC in 110 and novice examiner in 107 samples. The overall sensitivity and specificity of detecting residual BCC was 96.6% and 98.7%, respectively. Confocally, examiners diagnosed correctly nodular BCC in 96.6%, respectively, 98.3%, superficial BCC in 96.8%, respectively, 93.5%, infiltrating BCC in 88.9%, respectively, 83.3% and other BCC subtype in 22.2%, respectively, 0% (expert and novice examiner, respectively). CONCLUSION Ex vivo CM allowed intraoperative examination of BCC based on only 3-criteria with high sensitivity and specificity, provided useful information on tumor subtype and showed that both experienced and non-experienced examiners may use this diagnostic approach with excellent results.

Abstract
A major advantage of immunotherapy of cancer is that effector cells induced at one site should be able to kill metastatic cancer cells in other sites or tissues. However, different tissues have unique immune components, and very little is known about whether effector T cells induced against tumors in one tissue can work against the same tumors in other tissues. Here, we used CT26 murine tumor models to investigate anti-tumor immune responses in the skin and lungs and characterized cross-protection between the two tissues. Blockade of the function of Treg cells with anti-CD25 allowed for T cell-dependent rejection of s.c. tumors. When these mice were simultaneously inoculated i.v. with CT26, they also rejected tumors in the lung. Interestingly, in the absence of s.c. tumors, anti-CD25 treatment alone had no effect on lung tumor growth. These observations suggested that T cell-mediated anti-tumor protective immunity induced against s.c. tumors can also protect against lung metastases of the same tumors. In contrast, NKT cell-deficiency in CD1d-/- mice conferred significant protection against lung tumors but had no effect on the growth of tumors in the skin, and tumor rejection induced against the CT26 in the lung did not confer protection for the same tumor cells in the skin. Thus, effector cells against the same tumor do not work in all tissues, and the induction site of the effector T cells is critical to control metastasis. Further, the regulation of tumor immunity may be different for the same tumor in different anatomical locations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rapid microscopic evaluation of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), its grade of differentiation and level of invasiveness would enable better management of patients' therapy. OBJECTIVES Analyzing specific ex vivo confocal microscopy criteria whether they can predict diagnosis of invasive SCC vs carcinoma in situ and poorly differentiated or undifferentiated vs well and moderately differentiated SCC. METHODS Ex vivo confocal images of 102 SCCs in 57 patients were evaluated immediately after excision for the presence of predefined criteria based on confocal and histological knowledge. RESULTS In histopathological examination, 30 SCCs were in situ and 72 invasive. Of these, 29 invasive SCC tumors were well, 19 moderately, 15 poorly differentiated and 9 undifferentiated. χ2 analysis demonstrated that presence of erosion/ulceration, plump bright or speckled cells in dermis, keratin pearls and peritumoral inflammatory infiltrate correlated with diagnosis of invasive SCC. Erosion/ulceration and peritumoral inflammatory infiltrate were observed more frequently in poorly differentiated or undifferentiated tumors. Plump bright or speckled cells in the dermis were observed less often in well-differentiated tumors. The presence of keratin pearls was associated with well or moderately differentiated tumors. CONCLUSION Ex vivo CLSM allowed rapid examination of SCC and provided useful information on invasiveness and grading of the tumor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ex-vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy (ex-vivo CLSM) offers rapid examination of freshly excised tissue. During the conventional examination immunohistochemistry enables to distinguish various cell types. The possibility of immunofluorescent techniques could enhance the accuracy of the diagnosis performed by ex-vivo CLSM. METHODS The tissue probes from various skin tumors were stained with FITC-labeled S-100A10, Melan-A and anti-Ber-EP4 antibodies before examination with ex-vivo CLSM in the fluorescence and reflectance modes. Results were compared to negative controls and conventional histopathology. The staining protocols were evaluated by establishing a scoring system according to the signal intensity found in ex-vivo CLSM. RESULTS S100 immunostaining was successful in 55.6%. Dilution of 1:200 resulted in the best possible evaluation of the tumor. The best suitable protocol was protocol B (phosphate buffered saline [PBS], without blocking agent). Melan A immunostaining was positive in 66.7%, the best dilution was 1:500 and protocol B (PBS, without blocking agent) was the most suitable. Ber-EP4 immunostaining presented a signal in 85.7%, the best dilutions were 1:200 and 1:500 and protocol A (PBS, with blocking agent) showed most optimal results. CONCLUSION The use of fluorescent-labeled antibodies in ex-vivo CLSM is possible and could improve intraoperative diagnostics of skin tumors.

Abstract
UV radiation is acknowledged as the primary cause of photocarcinogenesis and therefore contributes to the development of skin cancer entities such as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and melanoma. Typical DNA photoproducts and indirect DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species are the result of UV radiation. UV-induced DNA damage is repaired by nucleotide excision repair, which consequently counteracts the development of mutations and skin carcinogenesis. Tumour-suppressor genes are inactivated by mutation and growth-promoting pathways are activated leading to disruption of cell-cycle progression. Depending on the skin cancer entity, some genes are more frequently affected than others. In BCC mutations in Patched or Smoothened are common and affect the Sonic hedgehog pathway. In SCC, cell regulator protein p53 (TP53) mutations are prevalent, as well as mutations of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), cyclin-dependent kinase 2A (CDKN2A), Rat sarcoma (RAS), or the tyrosine kinase Fyn (FYN). UV-induced mutations in TP53 and CDKN2A are frequent in melanoma. UV-induced inflammatory processes also facilitate photocarcinogenesis. Recent studies showed a connection between photocarcinogenesis and citrus consumption, phytochemicals, alcohol consumption, hormone replacement therapy, as well as oral contraceptive use. Preventative measures include adequate use of sun protection and skin cancer screening at regular intervals, as well as the use of chemopreventative agents.

Abstract
Cutaneous mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is exceedingly rare, almost always occurring as a dissemination of systemic MCL. To date, only 32 cases have been described. We report a series of 10 cases of MCL in the skin, and provide a comprehensive clinicopathologic review with clinical follow-up. Our cases occurred in older individuals (mean age = 70) and were more frequently in men (90%). Half of them presented in the head and neck region as a mass/nodule, and the remainder in the trunk and extremities as nodules. All patients have stage IV disease. In two of the 10 cases (20%) the cutaneous lesions preceded the diagnosis of disseminated disease. In two of the seven cases with available clinical follow-up information (33%) the skin was immediately involved after the diagnosis of MCL, and in three of the seven the skin was the first site of recurrence (mean interval = 57 months). The mean time to recurrence of the disease was 45.4 months and the overall survival was 66.3 months. Histologically six out of 10 cases (60%) had either pleomorphic or blastoid morphology (four out of 10 and two out of 10, respectively). The mean number of mitoses per 10 high-power fields was 18.44. While nine out of 10 cases expressed cyclin-D1, one case was not positive for cyclin-D1 but did label with SOX-11. Limited cytogenetic data showed trisomy 14 in one case, in addition to the t(11;14) translocation.

Abstract
In this review the basic principles of UV-induced carcinogenesis are summarized and the state of the art diagnosis and therapeutic strategies are discussed. The prevalent keratinocyte-derived neoplasms of the skin are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Cutaneous melanoma is less frequent but associated with high mortality. Common risk factors for all three tumor entities include sun exposure and DNA-repair deficiencies. Photocarcinogenesis follows a multistep model of cancer development in which ultraviolet-induced DNA damage leads to mutations resulting in activation of oncogenes or silencing of tumor-suppressor genes. This ends in a cellular mutator phenotype even more prone to mutation acquisition. DNA repair, especially the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway, counteracts mutation formation and skin cancer development. This is vividly demonstrated by the NER-defective disorder xeroderma pigmentosum. Primary skin cancer preventative strategies, therefore, include reduction of DNA photodamage by protection from the sun. Secondary preventative strategies include skin cancer screening. This implies standard examination techniques with the naked eye, an epiluminescence microscope, or digital epiluminescence microscopy. More advanced techniques include confocal laser scan microscopy.

Abstract
Chondroid syringoma (CS) represents the cutaneous counterpart of mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) of salivary glands. The malignant counterpart of CS, termed as "malignant CS" is a malignant eccrine neoplasm which lacks distinctive clinical features, often delaying initial diagnosis. Unlike its benign counterpart which often localizes in the head and neck region, malignant CS most often encountered in the trunk and the extremities. We report a rare case of an aggressive malignant CS of the left pinna with cervical lymph node metastasis. Our patient, to the best of our knowledge, possibly is the first case of malignant CS of the pinna and the fourth to arise in the head and neck region. The diagnostic challenges with an added emphasis on the role of positron emission tomography-computed tomography in aiding the management of this rare tumor are discussed.

Abstract
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the commonest malignant neoplasm in humans. Although a histopathological diagnosis of BCC is straightforward in the vast majority of cases, unusual histological variants can present a diagnostic challenge. A small proportion of BCCs show features which are generally associated with cutaneous adnexal neoplasms. Such changes may involve either the epithelium or the stroma and can mislead the pathologist particularly in small biopsies. Despite the growing evidence which speculate that BCC is a primitive follicular tumor, it is unusual to encounter tumors which actually show definitive signs of adnexal differentiation. This review aims to address this somewhat overlooked aspect of a very common tumor and offers practical guidance to distinguish them from adnexal neoplasms which they might mimic.

Abstract
Apocrine poromas are rare and distinctive benign adnexal neoplasms featuring tumor cells differentiating toward folliculosebaceous-apocrine units. We report an extremely rare case with multiple apocrine poromas in a single patient. Fifteen tumors were distributed on the head, neck, forearm and axilla of a 74-year-old man. All tumors were mostly composed of poroid cells that surrounded variably sized duct spaces, some of which exhibited decapitation secretion. The poroid cells were continuous with infundibulum-like structures that contained aggregates of mature sebocytes. The patient had no family history of similar tumors and no history of immunosuppressive therapy. This is the first report of multiple apocrine poromas, suggesting that predisposing genetic factors might play a part in the development of the tumors.

Abstract
Quoique rare le carcinome épidermoïde du scrotum a un mauvais pronostic. Les Carcinomes du scrotum induite et - liées au travail sont moins fréquentes en raison d'une meilleure hygiène, vêtements de protection, et la sensibilisation de la cancérogénicité des huiles industrielles. L’épidémie à l'HPV a induit une augmentation de l'incidence. Le traitement de dépend toujours exérèse locale de la lésion primaire. La radiothérapie a peu de bénéfice thérapeutique dans le traitement d'un carcinome épidermoïde du scrotum. La bléomycine peut être utile comme traitement adjuvant pour les maladies ilio-inguinal généralisée avant la tentative exérèse, même si cela n'a pas encore été prouvé. Entre janvier 2011 au 1er janvier 2013, 7 patients atteints de carcinome épidermoïde ont été pris en charge, Trois patients ont présenté une localisation ganglionnaire. Les sept patients ont eu un traitement chirurgical par exérèse large avec reconstruction, Deux patients ont été adressé pour chimiothérapie.2 patients ont présenté une récidive, dont un est décédé.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of discrepancies between surgical and histopathological measurements of specimens is important in order to avoid repeat surgery and unnecessary follow-ups. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to quantify the degree, time and influential factors of shrinkage of cutaneous surgical specimens. METHODS Data of 111 patients were gathered on age, sex, localization, diagnosis and specimen width and length before surgical excision (in vivo), at 5 min postsurgery (ex vivo) and after 24 h of fixation in 10% buffered formalin (postfixation). RESULTS The length and width were significantly lower in the postfixation vs. in vivo specimens, with a mean shrinkage of 17.0% in the length (p < 0.01) and 9.5% in the width (p < 0.01). 81.8% and 92.3% of the total shrinkage in length and weight was observed between in vivo and ex vivo measurements. No significant differences were observed as a function of sex, age or diagnosis. A greater shrinkage in length between in vivo and postfixation was found in specimens from the trunk. LIMITATIONS The most of the skin samples were diseased. CONCLUSION The largest proportion of specimen shrinkage occurred within 5 min of its excision and the shrinkage was greater in specimens from the trunk.
