Abstract
KEY MESSAGE We reported the mitochondrial genome of Ventilago leiocarpa for the first time. Two and one sites lead to the generation of stop and stat codon through editing were verified. Ventilago leiocarpa, a member of the Rhamnaceae family, is frequently utilized in traditional medicine due to the medicinal properties of its roots. In this study, we successfully assembled the mitogenome of V. leiocarpa using both BGI short reads and Nanopore long reads. This mitogenome has a total length of 331,839 bp. The annotated results showed 36 unique protein-coding, 16 tRNA and 3 rRNA genes in this mitogenome. Furthermore, we confirmed the presence of a branched structure through the utilization of long reads mapping, PCR amplification, and Sanger sequencing. Specifically, the ctg1 can form a single circular molecule or combine with ctg4 to form a linear molecule. Likewise, ctg2 can form a single circular molecule or can be connected to ctg4 to form a linear molecule. Subsequently, through a comparative analysis of the mitogenome and cpgenome sequences, we identified ten mitochondrial plastid sequences (MTPTs), including two complete protein-coding genes and five complete tRNA genes. The existence of MTPTs was verified by long reads. Colinear analysis showed that the mitogenomes of Rosales were highly divergent in structure. Finally, we identified 545 RNA editing sites involving 36 protein-coding genes by Deepred-mt. To validate our findings, we conducted PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing, which confirmed the generation of stop codons in atp9-223 and rps10-391, as well as the generation of a start codon in nad4L-2. This project reported the complex structure and RNA editing event of the V. Leiocarpa mitogenome, which will provide valuable information for the study of mitochondrial gene expression.

Abstract
The macroevolutionary processes that have shaped biodiversity across the temperate realm remain poorly understood and may have resulted from evolutionary dynamics related to diversification rates, dispersal rates, and colonization times, closely coupled with Cenozoic climate change. We integrated phylogenomic, environmental ordination, and macroevolutionary analyses for the cosmopolitan angiosperm family Rhamnaceae to disentangle the evolutionary processes that have contributed to high species diversity within and across temperate biomes. Our results show independent colonization of environmentally similar but geographically separated temperate regions mainly during the Oligocene, consistent with the global expansion of temperate biomes. High global, regional, and local temperate diversity was the result of high in situ diversification rates, rather than high immigration rates or accumulation time, except for Southern China, which was colonized much earlier than the other regions. The relatively common lineage dispersals out of temperate hotspots highlight strong source-sink dynamics across the cosmopolitan distribution of Rhamnaceae. The proliferation of temperate environments since the Oligocene may have provided the ecological opportunity for rapid in situ diversification of Rhamnaceae across the temperate realm. Our study illustrates the importance of high in situ diversification rates for the establishment of modern temperate biomes and biodiversity hotspots across spatial scales.

Abstract
The evolution of dispersal modes has been proposed to promote the diversification of angiosperms. However, little is known about the relative impact of different dispersal modes on plant diversification. We test the association between dispersal modes and diversification rates using Rhamnaceae, the cosmopolitan buckthorn family, as a model. We found that species with diplochory have the highest diversification rates followed by those with myrmecochory and ballistic dispersal, while lineages dispersed by vertebrates and wind have relatively low diversification rates. The difference in diversification rates may be closely linked to the difference in dispersal distance and ecological interactions implied by each dispersal mode. Species which disperse over larger geographical distances may have much higher speciation rates due to the increased chance of establishing isolated populations due to geological barriers or habitat fragmentation. However, long-distance dispersal may also increase the chance of extinction. By contrast, species with short-distance dispersal modes may have low speciation rates. Complex interactions with the surrounding environment may, however, impact diversification rates positively by increasing plant survival and reproductive success.

Abstract
The flavonoids myricetin and dihydromyricetin are significant components of Hovenia acerba seed. In this work, myricetin and dihydromyricetin were extracted from Hovenia acerba seed using an ultrasound-assisted technique, and the extraction parameters were adjusted using the response surface design approach. HPLC was used to assess the yield of myricetin and dihydromyricetin. According to the data, myricetin and dihydromyricetin yields were 0.53 mg/g and 4.06 mg/g at a 60 % ethanol solution concentration, 180 W of ultrasonic irradiation power, a 20 mL/g ratio of liquid to solid, and a 40 °C optimal extraction temperature. The aforementioned findings are virtually in agreement with the experimental findings suggested by the model. The study mentioned above thus offers a means of separating and developing useful components of natural goods.

Abstract
A new fossil discovery reported by Shi et al. changes our understanding of the biogeographic history of the cosmopolitan family, Rhamnaceae. Flowering shoots of the African genus Phylica (Rhamnaceae) dated at 100 million years ago (Ma) imply a 250 Ma origin of the family in fire-prone Gondwanan vegetation that enabled overland dispersal to all continents where it is currently widespread.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Japanese grape (Hovenia dulcis Thunberg) has potential as an antioxidant due to its high content of phenolic compounds in the early maturation stages. In this study, the antioxidant sodium erythorbate (CONTROL) was replaced by Japanese grape pseudofruits dehydrated by freeze-drying (FDP) and oven drying (OP), in Bologna sausages. The commercial natural antioxidant licresse (LS), based on licorice, has also been studied. RESULTS No significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed for the proximate composition and the texture profile of the Bologna sausages. An increase in pH was observed during storage for all formulations. At 28 days, the treatments FDP and OP were darker (lower L* values) and less red (lower a* values), possibly due to the presence of tannins in these samples, which may have bound with the iron present in myoglobin and minimized the oxidation reactions. The use of different antioxidants affected the nitrite contents of the Bologna sausages during storage. Regarding the lipid oxidation, the Japanese grape powder was more effective in delaying the oxidation reactions in Bologna sausages after 14 and 21 days of storage when compared to LS and the CONTROL, respectively. CONCLUSION The Japanese grape powders were effective in retarding the lipid oxidation of Bologna sausages, possibly due to the presence of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds, tannins, and ascorbic acid, showing the potential of these pseudofruits as antioxidants for use in meat products. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The combination of ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and chromatography is a valuable tool for identifying compounds in natural products. In this study, using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography system coupled to a high-resolution quadrupole/traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry/time-of-flight MS (UPLC-TWIMS-QTOF), we have established and validated a comprehensive TWCCSN2 and MS database for 112 plant specialized metabolites. The database included 15 compounds that were isolated and purified in-house and are not commercially available. We obtained accurate m/z, retention times, fragment ions, and TWIMS-derived CCS (TWCCSN2) values for 207 adducts (ESI+ and ESI-). The database included novel 158 TWCCSN2 values from 79 specialized metabolites. In the presence of plant matrix, the CCS measurement was reproducible and robust. Finally, we demonstrated the application of the database to extend the metabolite coverage of Ventilago harmandiana Pierre. In addition to pyranonaphthoquinones, a group of known specialized metabolites in V. harmandiana, we identified flavonoids, xanthone, naphthofuran, and protocatechuic acid for the first time through targeted analysis. Interestingly, further investigation using IM-MS of unknown features suggested the presence of organonitrogen compounds and lipid and lipid-like molecules, which is also reported for the first time. Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Alphitonia Reissek ex Endl. is a relatively small genus of the family Rhamnaceae. Plants of this genus are found predominantly in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific, with some species being widely distributed and others endemic to a region. Almost half of the species of the Alphitonia genus have been reported for their customary (traditional and contemporary) medicinal uses. This includes for the treatment of skin conditions, headache, stomachache, inflammation, and body pain such as joint pain and childbirth. AIM OF THE REVIEW The aim of this review is to provide the first comprehensive account on the customary uses including ethnomedicinal uses, and phytochemistry and biological activities of the Alphitonia genus, and to identify gaps in current knowledge and scope for future research of plants of this genus. MATERIALS AND METHODS Information relevant to the genus Alphitonia was collected by searching the scientific databases (SciFinder, Google Scholar, ACS publications, PubMed, Wiley Online Library and International Plant name Index). Species names were validated using the World Flora Online database (www.worldfloraonline.org). RESULTS Eight plants from the Alphitonia genus have been reported to be used as customary medicines, i.e. A. excelsa, A. ferruginea, A. franguloides, A. incana, A. neocaledonica, A. petriei, A. philippinensis and A. zizyphoides. A. excelsa, A. petriei, A. philippinensis and A. zizyphoides, have been shown to have biological activities that align with their customary uses, including antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Only five Alphitonia species reported for their medicinal customary uses have been explored for their phytochemistry, i.e. A. excelsa, A. neocaledonica, A. petriei, A. philippinensis and A. zizyphoides. Compounds identified from these plants include those that are well known for their medicinal importance. A. macrocarpa, A. whitei and A. xerocarpus have also been examined for their phytochemistry and have been found to have the same or similar bioactive compounds to those found in customarily used Alphitonia species. No biological activities or phytochemistry studies have been reported for the known customarily used medicinal plants A. ferruginea, A. franguloides and A. incana. CONCLUSIONS This review highlights the customary uses, biological activities and phytochemistry of plants of the Alphitonia Reissek ex Endl. genus and highlights the significance of the knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples. Of the plants that have been researched for their biological activities and phytochemistry, there is good correlation with these properties and their customary medicinal uses. However, over half of the plants of the Alphitonia genus, including those that are already reported in the public domain for their customary medicinal uses, have had none or limited biological activities or phytochemistry studies conducted. While only eight species of the Alphitonia genus have been reported as customary medicines, other Alphitonia species also possess medicinally important compounds, and it is possible that they are customary medicines but their uses have not been shared publicly by the Indigenous knowledge custodians. There is clearly much scope for further investigation of this genus with regards to their ethnomedicinal uses and therapeutic potential.

Abstract
The rapid Cretaceous diversification of flowering plants remains Darwin's 'abominable mystery' despite numerous fossil flowers discovered in recent years. Wildfires were frequent in the Cretaceous and many such early flower fossils are represented by charcoalified fragments, lacking complete delicate structures and surface textures, making their similarity to living forms difficult to discern. Furthermore, scarcity of information about the ecology of early angiosperms makes it difficult to test hypotheses about the drivers of their diversification, including the role of fire in shaping flowering plant evolution. We report the discovery of two exquisitely preserved fossil flower species, one identical to the inflorescences of the extant crown-eudicot genus Phylica and the other recovered as a sister group to Phylica, both preserved as inclusions together with burned plant remains in Cretaceous amber from northern Myanmar (~99 million years ago). These specialized flower species, named Phylica piloburmensis sp. nov. and Eophylica priscastellata gen. et sp. nov., exhibit traits identical to those of modern taxa in fire-prone ecosystems such as the fynbos of South Africa, and provide evidence of fire adaptation in angiosperms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the antitumor effects of ethanol extract from Ventilago leiocarpa Benth (EEVLB) on sarcoma 180 (S180) tumor-bearing mice and the potential mechanism. METHODS Sixty mice were randomly assigned to 6 groups according to a random number table: normal group, model group, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) group (0.02 g·kg-1), and high-, medium-, low-dose EEVLB groups (100, 84, and 56 g of raw material·kg-1 body weight, respectively), with 10 mice each group. All treatments were given once daily for 10 consecutive days. Effects of EEVLB on inhibiting tumor growth and immune function in mice were evaluated among all groups after the treatments by detecting tumor inhibition rate, organ index, serum levels of interleukin (IL)-2, -6, -10, CD3+CD4+ T lymphocytes, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, caspase-3 and Bcl-2. RESULTS EEVLB with different concentrations achieved inhibition of tumor growth in vivo, wherein the high-dose group showed the most significant reduction in tumor weight and increased apoptosis of tumor cells (P<0.05). In addition, both net weight gain and spleen index of mice showed uptrend in EEVLB treatment groups (P<0.05). Besides, serum levels of IL-2 and IL-6, percentages of CD3+CD4+ T lymphocytes and ratio of CD4+/CD8+ in peripheral blood were elevated in high- and medium-dose EEVLB groups compared with the model group (P<0.05). Also, upregulation of caspase-3 and downregulation of Bcl-2 were observed at protein levels in the high-dose EEVLB group (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS EEVLB exhibits promising antitumor activity in vivo. This effect might be due to activation of apoptotic signaling pathway, increase of cytokine levels and enhancement of immune function in tumor-bearing mice.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE Discaria americana Gillies ex Hook (sin. Discaria febrifuga and Discaria longispina) (Rhamnaceae) is a plant native from Rio Grande do Sul (Southern Brazil), Uruguay and Argentine, and has been used in Brazilian traditional medicine as antipyretic agent, and for stomach disorders. In Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay and Argentine, the roots, in decoction, are used as tonic and febrifuge. Although it is a plant widely used by the population, there are no studies proving this popular use. MATERIAL AND METHODS The crude neutral methanol extract, and pure isolated alkaloids, were investigated in vitro for antimicrobial activities against four Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtillis, Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecium; and five Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. RESULTS The crude neutral methanol (CME) extract of the root bark of Discaria americana showed antibacterial activity, ranging from 62.5 to 250 μg mL-1 (MIC), against the tested bacteria. From the fractions obtained from the crude extract, the basic ethereal fraction (BEF) showed to be more effective, with MICs between 31.5 and 125 μg mL-1 against the tested bacteria. The bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethyl ether basic fraction yielded eight cyclopeptide alkaloids: frangufoline (1), frangulanine (2), adouetine Y' (3), discarine A (4) discarine B (5), discarine C (6), discarene C (7) and discarine D (8). When evaluated against the Gram-positive bacteria Enterococcus faecium, discarine B (5) proved to be the most active alkaloid with a MIC/MLC = 0.77/1.55 μg mL-1, near the most active antibacterial agent levofloxacin (MIC/MLC = 0.77/0.77 μg mL-1). Moreover, discarine C (6) was the more active alkaloid against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, with a MIC/MLC = 3.1/6.2 μg mL-1, the same observed for the antibacterial agent azithromycin. Kinetic measurements of the bacteriolytic activities of discarine B (5) against Enterococcus faecium (Gram-positive), and of discarine C (6) against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (Gram-negative) were determined by optical density based on real time assay, suggesting that both mode of action are partially bacteriolytic. CONCLUSION In conclusion, five 14-membered cyclopeptide alkaloids isolated from Discaria americana Gillies ex Hook (Rhamnaceae) showed promising antibacterial activity, making this metabolites a class of scientific interest. The good activity presented by the extract and the alkaloids against the Gram-positive bacteria Enterococcus faecium and against the Gram-negative bacteria Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Enterobacter. aerogenes and Escherichia coli, corroborate with the popular use of this plant for stomach disorders and as antifebrile.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Discaria americana (Rhamnaceae) root bark infusion have been used in traditional medicine as antipyretic, tonic, ameliorative of stomach and skin diseases and diabetes. This study was designed to investigate whether the methanolic extract of the root bark of Discaria americana (MEDa) exhibits antinociceptive effects in mice. Furthermore, it was investigated the involvement of the opioidergic system in MEDa mechanism of action as well the interactions with TRP/ASIC channels in its effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS The antinociceptive effect of intra-gastric gavage (i.g.) of MEDa (0.3-300 mg/kg) was evaluated in mice subjected to acute chemical (acetic-acid, formalin, glutamate, capsaicin, cinnamaldehyde, and acidified saline) or thermal (hot plate) tests of pain. The involvement of opioid system was evaluated in the formalin test. A nonspecific effect of MEDa was observed by measuring locomotor activity and exploratory behavior in open field test. RESULTS MEDa significantly reduced the number of writhing induced by acetic acid and inhibited the nociception in the two phases of formalin. These effects were inhibited by pretreatment with naloxone. The nociception induced by hot plate and intraplantar injection of glutamate, capsaicin, cinnamaldehyde and acidified saline were significantly inhibited by MEDa. Only the dose of 300 mg/kg altered the locomotor activity. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated, for the first time, that the methanolic extract of the root bark of Discaria americana presents antinociceptive effect in chemical and thermal stimuli and its analgesic properties can be due activation of the opioidergic system. These results support the use of Discaria americana in traditional medicine and demonstrate that this plant presents a therapeutic potential for the development of phytomedicines with antinociceptive profile.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The Condalia buxifolia root bark infusion is used in traditional medicine in Brazil as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and against dysentery. This study was designed to investigate whether the methanolic extract of the root bark of Condalia buxifolia (MECb) exhibits antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects in mice. Furthermore, also was investigated the involvement of glutamatergic and opioidergic system in the antinociceptive effect induced by MECb. MATERIALS AND METHODS The antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of intra-gastric gavage (i.g.) administered MECb (10-300 mg/kg) were evaluated in mice subjected to chemical (formalin, acetic-acid, glutamate) or thermal (hot plate) models of pain. The involvement of opioid system in the antinociceptive effect of the MECb was investigated in formalin test. Furthermore, a nonspecific effect of MECb was evaluated by measuring locomotor activity and exploratory behavior in open field test. Finally, was performed a phytochemical analysis of MECb. RESULTS The phytochemical analysis of MECb was performed through HPLC analysis showing that the alkaloid Condaline-A is the main constituent. The intragastric administration of MECb (100-300 mg/kg) significantly inhibited the nociception caused by acetic acid (48 ± 2%), inflammatory phase (49 ± 3%) and paw edema (32 ± 6) caused by formalin, and MECb (100mg/kg, i.g.) also inhibited nociception caused by glutamate (41 ± 7%). In addition, MECb (100-300 mg/kg, i.g.) increased the paw withdrawal latency in hot-plate test, without affecting the locomotor activity and exploratory behavior in open field test. Finally, the antinociceptive effects of MECb (100mg/kg, i.g.) were significantly reversed by naloxone (1mg/kg, i.p.) in the formalin test. CONCLUSION These data show, for the first time, that MECb has significant antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects, which appear to be related to the inhibition of the glutamatergic system and the activation of opioid mechanism, besides present central effects. These results support the use of Condalia buxifolia in traditional medicine and demonstrate that this plant has therapeutic potential for the development of phytomedicines with antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Gouania longipetala is commonly used in Cameroonian traditional medicine to manage women fertility and menopausal complaints. However, despite this use, the estrogenic properties of G. longipetala have not been studied until now. AIM OF STUDY The present study was aimed to assess estrogenic activities of the stem bark aqueous (GLA) and ethanolic (GLE) extracts of G. longipetala in post-menopause-like model of ovariectomized (Ovx) Wistar rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Animals were either sham-operated or Ovx. 84 days after ovariectomy, animals were divided into seven groups of five animals and were daily treated for 28 days with distilled water (10 mL/kg) for group 1, 2% solution of Tween 80 (10 mL/kg) for group 2, estradiol valerate (1 mg/kg) for group 3, GLA (45 or 180 mg/kg) and GLE (40 or 160 mg/kg) for groups 4 to 7 respectively. Sham-operated animals daily received distilled water (10 mL/kg). During the experimental period, the body weight was registered every week. At the day 29, blood pressure was registered by invasive method while uterine and vagina morphometry as well as body, uterine and abdominal fat weights changes were analyzed. Serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were determined. Moreover, oxidative stress markers such as nitrites, reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in homogenized liver and aorta. RESULTS Compared with the sham control, vagina and uterine dystrophy and elevated blood pressure were observed in Ovx rats treated with vehicles. Biochemical parameters showed a significant increase of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol and MDA as well as a significant decrease of nitrites and GSH in Ovx animals treated with vehicle as compared to sham group. GLA and GLE displayed estrogen-like effects on vagina and did not affect uterine wet weight and epithelial height compared with vehicle groups. Both extracts displayed anti-atherogenic properties by reducing AI, AIP and LDL-cholesterol level as compared to vehicles groups. GLA and GLE significantly prevented the increase of MDA induced by ovariectomy as compared to rats treated with vehicles. CONCLUSION This study showed that GLA and GLE exhibited estrogenic effects by providing vaginal lubrication, by modulating blood pressure and improving lipid profile, oxidative status and endothelial function and may not have an undesirable influence on the endometrium in ovariectomized rats.

Abstract
CONTEXT The roots of Berchemia lineate (L.) DC. (Rhamnaceae) have been long used as a remedy for the treatment of some diseases in Guangxi Province, China. OBJECTIVE The present study investigates the hepatoprotective effect of Berchemia lineate ethanol extract (BELE) on CCl4-induced acute liver damage in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Effect of BELE administrated for 7 consecutive days was evaluated in mice by the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin (TBIL), albulin (ALB), globulin (GLB), and total protein (TP) levels, as well as liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Moreover, histopathological examinations were also taken. RESULTS Compared with the model group, administration of 400 mg/kg BELE for 7 d in mice significantly decreased the serum ALT (56.25 U/L), AST (297.67 U/L), ALP (188.20 U/L), and TBIL (17.90 mol/L), along with the elevation of TP (64.67 g/L). In addition, BELE (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, i.g.) treated mice recorded a dose-dependent increment of SOD (291.17, 310.32, and 325.67 U/mg prot) and reduction of MDA (7.27, 6.77, and 5.33 nmol/mg prot) levels. Histopathological examinations also confirmed that BELE can ameliorate CCl4-induced liver injuries, characterized by extensive hepatocellular degeneration/necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, congestion, and sinusoidal dilatation. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The results indicated that BELE possessed remarkable protective effect against acute hepatotoxicity and oxidative injuries induced by CCl4, and that the hepatoprotective effects of BELE may be due to both the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the increase of antioxidant activity.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Scutia buxifolia is a native tree of Southern Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, which is popularly known as "coronilha" and it is used as a cardiotonic, antihypertensive and diuretic substance. The aim of this study was to assess the acute and sub-acute toxicity of the ethyl acetate fraction from the stem bark Scutia buxifolia in male and female mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS The toxicity studies were based on the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD-guidelines 423 and 407). In an acute study, a single dose of 2000 mg/kg of Scutia buxifolia was administered orally to male and female mice. Mortality, behavioral changes, and biochemical and hematological parameters were evaluated. In the sub-acute study, Scutia buxifolia was administered orally to male and female mice at doses of 100, 200, and 400mg/kg/day for 28 days. Behavioral changes and biochemical, hematological, and histological analysis were evaluated. RESULTS The acute administration of Scutia buxifolia did not cause changes in behavior or mortality. Male and female mice presented decreased levels of platelets. Female mice presented decreased levels of leukocytes. On the other hand, in a sub-acute toxicity study, we observed no behavioral changes in male or female mice. Our results demonstrated a reduction in glucose levels in male mice treated to 200 and 400mg/kg of Scutia buxifolia. Aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) activity was increased by Scutia buxifolia at 400mg/kg in male mice. In relation to the hematological parameters, male mice presented a reduction in hemoglobin (HGB) and hematocrit (HCT) when treated to 400mg/kg of plant fraction. Female mice showed no change in these parameters. Histopathological examination of liver tissue showed slight abnormalities that were consistent with the biochemical variations observed. CONCLUSION Scutia buxifolia, after acute administration, may be classified as safe (category 5), according to the OECD guide. However, the alterations observed, after sub-acute administration with high doses of ethyl acetate fraction from the stem bark Scutia buxifolia, suggest that repeated administration of this fraction plant can cause adverse hepatic, renal, and hematological effects.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Gouania longipetala leaves are commonly used in folkloric medicine in Africa and other parts of the world for treatment of edema, febrifuges, veneral diseases, lumbago, heart diseases, diabetes mellitus malaria, etc. This study therefore evaluated safety profile of the methanol leaf extract of the plant using acute and sub-chronic studies in rat model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Acute toxicity test of the plant lasted for 48 h with oral administration of graded doses (100-4000 mg/kg) of Gouania longipetala extract (GLE) in rats. The rats were observed for signs of toxicity and death. The sub-chronic toxicity was evaluated by administration of different doses (2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg) of GLE daily in feed for 90 days. On days, 30, 60 and 90, blood samples collected from the retro-orbital plexus of the eye of the rats were used for evaluation of serum biochemistry, hematology, lipid peroxidation and in vivo antioxidant activities. Histopathological evaluations of the kidney, liver, lungs and heart were also done. RESULTS The acute toxicity test revealed no observable signs of toxicity or morbidity. Sub-chronic study showed that GLE significantly (p<0.05) increased relative liver weight on day 90 at 10 mg/kg. There were no significant variations in the hematological parameters of both GLE treated and untreated rats. The extract significantly (p<0.05) reduced total cholesterol, triglycerides, very low density lipoproteins and increased high density lipoproteins which was more prominent on day 90 at the dose of 10 mg/kg. The extract significantly (p<0.05) increased liver enzyme markers at the doses used. GLE also significantly (p<0.05) increased serum urea at the dose of 10 mg/kg on day 90. The extract caused dose-dependent and significant (p<0.05) increase in superoxide dismutase and decrease in malondiadehyde. Histopathological studies revealed degenerative changes in the kidney and liver. CONCLUSION The results of the study suggest that Gouania longipetala is well tolerated in short term therapies, but may have long term toxic effects on the kidney and liver.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The combustible nature of chaparral plants has been attributed to the presence of secondary compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids and essential oils, among others. However, the implication of the antimicrobial properties of secondary compounds of chaparral in modulating rumen microbial metabolism has not been determined. The effects of 11 chaparral plants on rumen microbial fermentation were assessed in an in vitro batch culture fermentation fed a barley silage:barley grain-based low concentrate (LC) and high concentrate (HC) diets. RESULTS With LC, gas production [g dry matter (DM) incubated] and DM disappearance (DMD) were unaffected by Adenostoma fasciculatum, Ceanothus cuneatus, Baccharis pilularis or Eriodictyon californicum, but all plants except C. cuneatus decreased (P < 0.05) CH(4) production. With HC diet, all species except A. fasciculatum decreased (P < 0.01) total gas produced. Total volatile fatty acids (VFA) produced, molar proportions of acetate, propionate and butyrate, and the acetate:propionate (A:P) ratio were unaffected by chaparral addition to both HC and LC diets. Increased concentrations of A. fasciculatum and E. californicum decreased (linear; P < 0.05) fermentability and productions of CH(4) and NH(3) -N. CONCLUSION Among all chaparral species investigated A. fasciculatum and E. californicum added as 10% of LC diet showed some potential to exert beneficial effects on rumen microbial fermentation.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Scutia buxifolia has been widely used in Brazilian folk medicine as an anti-hypertensive agent. We evaluated the vascular effects and mechanism involved in the relaxation of aorta induced by an n-butanolic fraction (BuOH) from Scutia buxifolia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Rat aortic rings precontracted by phenylephrine (1 μM) were exposed to cumulative concentrations (3–3000 μg/ml) of crude extracts or fractions obtained from bark or leaves of Scutia buxifolia. Classical receptor antagonists, channel and enzymatic inhibitors were used to check the mechanisms involved. RESULTS The crude extracts of both leaves and bark of Scutia buxifolia, as well as several fractions, were able to induce partial or total relaxation of rat aortic rings. The BuOH fraction of bark of Scutia buxifolia was the most potent in endothelium-intact (E+) preparations, and also induced a partial, but very significant relaxation in endothelium-denuded (E−) vessels. The non-selective nitric oxide synthase inhibitor L-NAME, as well as the soluble guanylate cyclase inhibitor ODQ, vanished the relaxation in E+. In E− preparations, K+ channel blockers, such as tetraethylammonium, glibenclamide, 4-aminopyridine, and the large-conductance calcium-activated K+ channel blocker iberiotoxin, were able to significantly reduce the maximum relaxation elicited by BuOH fraction. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that BuOH fraction obtained from barks of Scutia buxifolia induced both endothelium-dependent and -independent relaxation in rat aortic rings. The endothelium-dependent relaxation is fully dependent on NO/cGMP system, while direct activation of K+ channels may explain, at least in part, the endothelium-independent relaxation induced by BuOH fraction of Scutia buxifolia.

Abstract
The protective effects of Semen Hoveniae extract (SHE) from Hovenia dulcis Thunb. (Rhamnaceae) on acute alcohol-induced liver injury were investigated in vivo using mice as test models. In the present study, SHE (150, 300, 600 mg/kg/day) was given to mice by intragastric administration for 4 days. Mice were gavaged with 60% ethanol 10 mL/kg after the last dose of extract. Six hours after alcohol administration, liver injury was evaluated by biochemical examination. Lipid peroxidation and the activity of antioxidants were measured by spectrophotometric methods. In mice, administration of SHE significantly decreased the activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in serum. Administration of SHE also protected against alcohol-induced alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) elevation in mice. Concurrently, there was an augmentation in the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione (GSH), and it also facilitated alcohol metabolism. Acute toxicity tests showed that a single dose of oral SHE up to 22 g/kg did not result in any death or toxic side effects in mice during 14 days' observation. These results demonstrate that SHE could protect against acute alcohol-induced liver injury without any toxic side effects. Therefore, Semen Hoveniae has potential for the development of a clinically useful agent which could protect the liver from alcohol-induced injury.

Abstract
Hovenia dulcis Thunb., known as Japanese raisin tree, is commonly found in East Asia. It has a long history as a food supplement and traditional medicine in Japan, China and Korea, but is little known and used in Western countries so far. This minireview summarizes traditional uses and current knowledge on the pharmacology and phytochemistry of H. duclcis and covers, in particular, literature from specialized Asian journals that are not readily accessible. Extracts from H. dulcis accelerate detoxification of ethanol, and possess hepatoprotective, antioxidative, antimicrobial and antidiabetic properties. Although the underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully understood, free radical scavenging and enhancement of ethanol catabolism have been reported.

Abstract
The present study examined the effects of an ethanolic extract of the fruit of Hovenia dulcis (EHD) on chronic hepatitis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) in mice. CCl(4) (5%; 0.1 ml/10 g body weight) was given twice a week for 9 weeks, and mice received EHD throughout the entire experimental period. Plasma activities of GPT and GOT, and hepatic levels of malondialdehyde were significantly lowered in mice treated with EHD as compared to mice treated with CCl(4) only. Histological evaluation showed that EHD could attenuate the liver fibrosis and necrosis caused by CCl(4). RT-qPCR analysis also showed that EHD treatment decreased hepatic collagen (alpha1)(I) and collagen (alpha1)(III) mRNA expressions. Chronic CCl(4) treatment caused liver injuries in mice, characterized by an increase in hepatic methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) 2A gene expression, and decreased MAT1A gene expression. EHD significantly reduced the changes in MAT gene expression due to the chronic CCl(4) treatment. These results clearly demonstrate that the EHD can reduce hepatic injuries in mice induced by CCl(4).

Abstract
A screening study on neuraminidase inhibitory constituents was carried out, and activity-guided fractionations of three plants, Gouania obtusifolia, Zizyphus cambodiana, and Mangifera odorata, led to the isolation of eleven compounds (1-11). Mangiferin was identified as a significant neuraminidase inhibitor.

Abstract
The antibacterial activity of the extracts of Ventilago madraspatana stem-bark, Rubia cordifolia root and Lantana camara root-bark, prepared with solvents of different polarity, was evaluated by the agar-well diffusion method. Twelve bacteria, six each of gram-positive and gram-negative strains, were used in this study. Chloroform and ethanol extracts of V. madraspatana showed broad-spectrum activity against most of the bacteria except S. aureus, E. coli and V. cholerae. On the other hand, the activity of the chloroform and methanol extracts of R. cordifolia and L. camara was found to be more specific towards the gram-positive strains, although gram-negative P. aeruginosa was also inhibited by the methanol extracts of both these plants in a dose dependent manner. The water extracts of V. madraspatana and L. camara were found to be inactive, while that of R. cordifolia was significantly active against B. subtilis and S. aureus compared with streptomycin and penicillin G used as standards. In the course of bio-assay guided fractionation, emodin and physcion were isolated for the first time from the stem-bark of V. madraspatana. It was noteworthy to find the MICs of emodin in the range 0.5-2.0 microg/mL against three Bacillus sp. Both the anthraquinonoid compounds inhibited P. aeruginosa, emodin being more effective, showing an MIC of 70 microg/mL.

Abstract
The EtOAc-soluble fraction from a methanolic extract of Hovenia dulcis Thunb. exhibited neuroprotective activity against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in mouse hippocampal HT22 cells. The neuroprotective activity-guided isolation resulted in 8 phenolic compounds (1-8), such as vanillic acid (1), ferulic acid (2), 3,5-dihydroxystilbene (3), (+)-aromadendrin (4), methyl vanillate (5), (-)-catechin (6), 2,3,4-trihydrobenzoic acid (7), and (+)-afzelechin (8). Among these, compounds 6 and 8 had a neuroprotective effect on the glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in HT22 cells. Furthermore, compound 6 had a DPPH free radical scavenging effect with an IC50 value of 57.7 microM, and a superoxide anion radical scavenging effect with an IC50 value of 8.0 microM. Both compounds 6 and 8 had ABTS cation radical scavenging effects with IC50 values of 7.8 microM and 23.7 microM, respectively. These results suggest that compounds 6 and 8 could be neuroprotectants owing to their free radical scavenging activities.

Abstract
The natural triterpene betulinic acid and its analogues (betulinic aldehyde, lupeol, betulin, methyl betulinate and betulinic acid amide) caused concentration-dependent alterations of erythrocyte membrane shape towards stomatocytes or echinocytes according to their hydrogen bonding properties. Thus, the analogues with a functional group having a capacity of donating a hydrogen bond (COOH, CH(2)OH, CONH(2)) caused formation of echinocytes, whereas those lacking this ability (CH(3), CHO, COOCH(3)) induced formation of stomatocytes. Both kinds of erythrocyte alterations were prohibitive with respect to Plasmodium falciparum invasion and growth; all compounds were inhibitory with IC(50) values in the range 7-28 microM, and the growth inhibition correlated well with the extent of membrane curvature changes assessed by transmission electron microscopy. Erythrocytes pre-loaded with betulinic acid or its analogues and extensively washed in order to remove excess of the chemicals could not serve as hosts for P. falciparum parasites. Betulinic acid and congeners can be responsible for in vitro antiplasmodial activity of plant extracts, as shown for Zataria multiflora Boiss. (Labiatae) and Zizyphus vulgaris Lam. (Rhamnaceae). The activity is evidently due to the incorporation of the compounds into the lipid bilayer of erythrocytes, and may be caused by modifications of cholesterol-rich membrane rafts, recently shown to play an important role in parasite vacuolization. The established link between erythrocyte membrane modifications and antiplasmodial activity may provide a novel target for potential antimalarial drugs.

Abstract
Methanolic extracts from the heart wood, stem bark, and stem wood of Ventilago harmandiana Pierre (Family Rhamnaceae) were assessed for anti-inflammatory effects using both acute and chronic inflammatory models. Analgesic and antipyretic activities of the extracts were also evaluated. It was found that all extracts possessed strong inhibitory effects on the acute phase of inflammation as seen in ethyl phenylpropiolate (EPP)- and arachidonic acid (AA)-induced ear edema as well as in carrageenin-induced paw edema in rats. The extracts elicited only weak inhibitory activity on cotton pellet-induced granuloma formation, a subchronic inflammatory model. In the analgesic test, all extracts exerted pronounced inhibitory activity in acetic acid-induced writhing response but showed only weak effects in the tail-flick test. The extracts also showed excellent antipyretic activity on yeast-induced hyperthermia in rats.

Abstract
We investigated the mechanisms of action of 3-O-methylquercetin (3-MQ), isolated from Rhamnus nakaharai (Hayata) Hayata (Rhamnaceae) which is used as a folk medicine for treating constipation, inflammation, tumors and asthma in Taiwan. The tension changes of tracheal segments were isometrically recorded on a polygraph. 3-MQ concentration-dependently relaxed histamine (30 microM)-, carbachol (0.2 microM)- and KCl (30 mM)-induced precontractions, and inhibited cumulative histamine-, and carbachol-induced contractions in a non-competitive manner. 3-MQ also concentration-dependently and non-competitively inhibited cumulative Ca(2+)-induced contractions in depolarized (K(+), 60 mM) guinea-pig trachealis. The nifedipine (10 microM)-remaining tension of histamine (30 microM)-induced precontraction was further relaxed by 3-MQ, suggesting that no matter whether VDCCs were blocked or not, 3-MQ may have other mechanisms of relaxant action. The relaxant effect of 3-MQ was unaffected by the removal of epithelium or by the presence of propranolol (1 microM), 2',5'-dideoxyadenosine (10 microM), methylene blue (25 microM), glibenclamide (10 microM), N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine (20 microM), or alpha-chymotrypsin (1 U/ml). However, 3-MQ (7.5 - 15 microM) and IBMX (3 - 6 microM), a positive control, produced parallel and leftward shifts of the concentration-response curve of forskoline (0.01 - 3 microM) or nitroprusside (0.01 - 30 microM). 3-MQ or IBMX at various concentrations (10 - 300 microM) concentration-dependently and significantly inhibited cAMP- and cGMP-PDE activities of the trachealis. The IC50 values of 3-MQ were estimated to be 13.8 and 14.3 microM, respectively. The inhibitory effects of 3-MQ on both enzyme activities were not significantly different from those of IBMX, a non-selective PDE inhibitor. The flavonoids quercetin, hyperoside, rutin and quercetin-3-O-[beta-xylosyl-(1-2)-alpha-rhamnoside] 4'-O-alpha- rhamnoside) were isolated.

Abstract
The insect antifeedant activity of the quinones isolated from Ventilago madaraspatana was investigated by circular leaf disc dual choice bioassay. Amongst the quinones tested, Ventiloquinone A was the most effective antifeedant against Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata and Spodoptera litura.
