The relative impact of toxic heavy metals (THMs) (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr)(VI), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb)) on the total environment: an overview

Theoretical study on optimizing dipeptidomimetic isocyanonaphthalene chemosensor and the fluorescence mechanism for detecting Hg2

The excited (S1) state charge distribution characteristics and fluorescence mechanism of fluorescence probes benzyl (6-cyano-2-naphthoyl)-L-valinate (NPI) and benzyl (6-amino-2-naphthoyl)-L-valinate (NPA) have been discussed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Further analysis by constructing a torsional potential energy curve (PEC) shows that a well-defined minimum energy conformation is observed when the C-C single bond between the valine benzyl ester and naphthalene ring in NPI rotates. For NPA, the most stable conformation is the naphthalene ring conformation with dihedral angle N2C1C2C3 of -30.60°, whose total energy is 0.17 kcal/mol lower than that of the second most stable conformer. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) demonstrate that NPI exhibits a low degree of charge coupling, and the oscillator intensity is close to zero, indicating that it is not conducive to luminescence. However, in the S1 state, the oscillator strength of NPA is 1.2044, which is a bright state, resulting in the strong emitting. Additionally, fluorescence imaging is favored as a visual observation technique, and Stokes shift is an important physical parameter to measure fluorescence. According to the idea that changing the number and position of functional groups can affect the photophysical properties of fluorescent dyes, o-NPDI, p-NPDI and m-NPDI dyes were newly designed and o-NPDA, p-NPDA, m-NPDA produced after recognition of Hg2+. The spectral performance results show that the newly designed fluorescent dye (p-NPDA) can not only emit in the near infrared region after recognizing Hg2+, but also has a large Stokes shift (236 nm). This indirectly reflects that para-substitution is more conducive to Stokes shift, and has become one of the strategies for fluorescent dye design.

Quantification of arsenic in real samples using a spectrophotometric cloud point extraction of the formed ion pair with astrazon orange G

A novel cloud-point extraction (CPE) procedure for the determination of ultra-trace amounts of arsenic species in real samples, purchased from the local market by spectrophotometer was developed. Inorganic arsenic species analysis in water, beverages, and foods has become increasingly important in recent years, as arsenic species are considered carcinogenic and are assessed at significant levels in samples. The technique is established on a selective ternary complex of As(V) with astrazon orange G (AOG+) in the presence of tartaric acid and polyethylene glycol tertoctylphenyl ether (Triton X-114) at pH 4.0. The calibration curve developed within range 3.0-160 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient of 0.9988 for As(V) provided a preconcentration factor of 200 and a limit of detection (3S blank/m) of 0.88 ng/mL under optimum investigation conditions. The results of molar absorptivity and Sandell sensitivity are calculated and found to be 4.38 × 105 L/mol cm and 0.018 ng cm-2, respectively. The statistical treatment of data obtained from the proposed and GF-AAS procedures are compared in terms of Student's t-tests and variance ratio F-tests has revealed no significant differences. The methodology has been effectively confirmed by assessing real samples and comparing it to the GF-AAS method statistically.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in the surface sediments, seawater and organisms of the Pearl River Estuary, South China Sea

Coastal heavy-metal contamination poses significant risks to marine ecosystems and human health, necessitating comprehensive research for effective mitigation strategies. This study assessed heavy-metal pollution in sediments, seawater, and organisms in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), with a focus on Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Hg, and Cr. A notable reduction in heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments was observed in 2020 compared to 2017 and 2018, likely due to improved pollution management and COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Spatial analysis revealed a positive correlation between elevated heavy-metal concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and As) and areas with significant human activity. Source analysis indicated that anthropogenic activities accounted for 63 % of the heavy metals in sediments, originating from industrial effluents, metal processing, vehicular activities, and fossil fuel combustion. Cd presented a high ecological risk due to its significant enrichment in surface sediments. Organisms in the PRE were found to be relatively enriched with Hg and Cu, with average As concentrations slightly exceeding the Chinese food-health criterion. This study identified high-risk ecological zones and highlighted Cd as the primary pollutant in the PRE. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of recent pollution control measures and emphasize the need for ongoing monitoring and mitigation to safeguard marine ecosystems and human health.

Biosorption and Bioprotective Potential of Levilactobacillus brevis in Mice Challenged by Lead-Induced Oxidative Stress

Lead (Pb) poisoning is a widespread issue in both developed and developing countries that poses a significant public health challenge. Our study aimed to explore the impact of Levilactobacillus brevis strains on inflammatory and antioxidant gene expression in the liver and brain of mice exposed to oxidative stress caused by Pb. We began by evaluating Pb absorption by Levilactobacillus brevis strains (ARKA-CH-1 (A1) and ARKA-CH-6 (A6)) using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in vitro to identify the most effective strain. We then divided four groups of BALB/c mice into control and experimental groups and treated them for 30 days. The control group received a normal diet, while the experimental groups consumed lead-containing water (0.6 g/L) with or without Levilactobacillus brevis strains. Following the experiments, we collected blood samples to test liver markers, antioxidant enzymes, and immunoglobulins. We also used real-time PCR to examine the expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) genes. The results showed that the A1 strain was the most effective in absorbing Pb. The Pb exposure led to an increase in liver enzyme values and a decrease in antioxidant enzyme activity and immunoglobulin factors. However, the combination of A1 and A6 strains had a greater effect in reducing inflammatory enzymes and increasing antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, we observed a significant increase in iNOS gene expression and a notable decrease in SOD gene expression with Pb consumption. However, the combination of A1 and A6 strains had a synergistic effect in reducing iNOS and increasing SOD gene expression. In conclusion, Levilactobacillus brevis A1 strain alone or in combination with the A6 strain could be a promising strategy to mitigate the oxidative stress symptoms in mice challenged by lead-induced toxicity.

Hexavalent chromium damages intestinal cells and coelomocytes and impairs immune function in the echiuran worm Urechis unicinctus by causing oxidative stress and apoptosis

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a common pollutant in the marine environment, which impairs immunity and causes reproductive and heredity disorders in organisms. To clarify the immunotoxic effects of Cr (VI) on the marine worm Urechis unicinctus, we analyzed tissue damage and immune dysfunction caused by Cr (VI) in this organism at histopathologic, zymologic, apoptotic and molecular levels. The results indicated that the bioaccumulation of Cr (VI) bioaccumulation levels in coelomocytes was significantly higher than in the intestines and muscles. Pathological observation showed that Cr (VI) caused damage to the respiratory intestine, stomach and midgut. Cr (VI) also increased the replication of goblet cells and a reduction in the replication of epithelial cells. Meanwhile, Cr (VI) induced apoptosis of intestinal cells and coelomocytes, accompanied by an increase in the expression of Caspase-3, COX-2, and MyD88 in the intestine and coelomocytes. At the same time, Cr (VI) significantly affected the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, ACP, CAT, CAT, and GST, and increased H2O2 and MDA contents in U. unicinctus. Moreover, Cr (VI) exposure also up-regulated the transcription of hsc70, mt and jnk genes but decreased that of sod in the intestines. In contrast, Cr (VI) down-regulated the expression of sod, hsc70, mt, and jnk genes in coelomocytes. Collectively, Cr (VI) bioaccumulated in U. unicinctus cells and tissues, causing several histopathological changes, oxidative stress, and apoptosis of several cells in the organism, resulting in intestinal and coelomocyte damage and immune dysfunctioning.

Susceptibility of Lymantria dispar to Beauveria bassiana under short-term Cd stress: Humoral immunostimulation cannot offset cellular immunotoxicity

Heavy metal is a serious environmental pollutant with all kinds of biotoxic effects. The immunomodulatory effects of Cd stress on Lymantria dispar larvae and its underlying mechanisms were investigated. The susceptibility of Cd-treated larvae to Beauveria bassiana (Bb) was significantly increased by 27.50 %. The hemocyte count, melanization, encapsulation activities, and expression levels of related regulatory genes (e.g. PPO1 and DSCAM) in the Cd and Cd+Bb groups were markedly lower than those in CK and CK+Bb groups. Hemocyte compensation through the apoptosis inhibitor significantly increased the melanization, encapsulation, and the survival rate of larvae in the Cd+Bb group by 100.00 %, 74.03 %, and 18.33 %, respectively. The expression of signal transduction and effector genes (e.g. Gloverin) was significantly elevated in Cd-treated larvae both before and after Bb infection. Silencing Gloverin resulted in a 9.17 % increase in susceptibility of Cd-treated larvae to Bb. Cd exposure induced humoral immunostimulation in larvae through the CncC-Gloverin pathway, as evidenced by that silencing CncC resulted in a 71.07 % decrease in Gloverin expression and a 19.73 % increase in larval mortality in Cd+Bb group. Overall, the humoral immunostimulation induced by Cd stress in L. dispar larvae were insufficient to counteract the cellular immunotoxicity during Bb infection.

Hexavalent chromium uptake in rice (Oryza sativa L.) mediated by sulfate and phosphate transporters OsSultr1;2 and OsPht1;1

Chromium (Cr) soil contamination is a critical global environmental concern, with hexavalent chromium (Cr[VI]) being especially perilous due to its high mobility, bioavailability, and phytotoxicity. This poses a significant threat to the cultivation of crops, particularly rice, where the mechanisms of Cr(VI) absorption remain largely unexplored. This study uncovered a competitive interaction between Cr(VI) and essential nutrients-sulfate and phosphate during the uptake process. Notably, deficiencies in sulfate and phosphate were associated with a marked increase in Cr(VI) accumulation in rice, reaching up to 76.5 % and 77.7 %, respectively. Employing q-PCR, this study identified significant up-regulation of the sulfate transporter gene, OsSultr1;2, and the phosphate transporter gene, OsPht1;1, in response to Cr(VI) stress. Genetic knockout studies have confirmed the crucial role of OsSultr1;2 in Cr(VI) uptake, with its deletion leading to a 36.1 % to 69.6 % decrease in Cr uptake by rice roots. Similarly, the knockout of OsPht1;1 resulted in an 18.1 % to 25.7 % decrease in root Cr accumulation. These findings highlight the key role of the sulfate transporter OsSultr1;2 in Cr(VI) uptake, with phosphate transporters also contributing significantly to the process. These insights are valuable for developing rice varieties with reduced Cr(VI) accumulation, ensuring the safety of rice grain production.

Quantitative detection of heavy metal Cd in vegetable oils: A nondestructive method based on Raman spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

Heavy metal contaminants in vegetable oils can cause irreversible damage to human health. In this study, the quantitative detection of Cd in vegetable oils was investigated based on Raman spectroscopy combined with chemometric methods. The necessary preprocessing of the Raman signal was performed using baseline calibration and the Savitzky-Golay method. Three variable optimization methods were applied to the preprocessed Raman spectra. Namely, bootstrap soft shrinkage, multiple feature spaces ensemble strategy with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), respectively. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) modeling for the determination of Cd in vegetable oils. The results show that three variable optimization algorithms improved the predictive performance of the model. Among them, the CARS-PLSR model has strong generalization performance and robustness. Its prediction coefficient of determination (R P 2 $R_{\mathrm{P}}^2$ ) was 0.9995, the root mean square error of prediction was 0.3533 mg/kg, and the relative prediction deviation was 44.3748, respectively. In summary, rapid quantitative analysis of Cd contamination in vegetable oils can be realized based on Raman spectroscopy combined with chemometrics.

Efficient selective adsorption of Cr(VI) by S-doped porous carbon prepared from industrial lignin: Waste increment and wastewater treatment

Industrial lignin is a waste product of the paper industry, which contains a large amount of oxygen group structure, and can be used to treat industrial wastewater containing Cr(VI). However, lignin has very low reactivity, so how to enhance its adsorption performance is a major challenge at present. In this study, a two-stage hydrothermal and activation strategy was used to activate the lignin activity and doping S element to prepare high-performance S-doped lignin-based polyporous carbon (S-LPC). The results show that the surface of S-LPC is rich in S and O groups and has a well-developed pore structure, which is very beneficial to Cr(VI) uptake -reduction and mass transfer on the material. In the wastewater, the utmost adsorption potential of Cr(VI) by S-LPC achieved 882.83 mg/g. After 7 cycles of regeneration, the adsorption of S-LPC decreased by only approximately 18 %. Ion competition experiments showed that S-LPC has excellent specificity for Cr(VI) adsorption. In factory wastewater, the adsorption performance of S-LPC for Cr(VI) remained above 95 %, which shows the excellent performance of S-LPC in practical applications. The results are of great significance for green chemical utilization of waste lignin, treatment of industrial wastewater and sustainable development.

Application of rhizobium inoculation in regulating heavy metals in legumes: A meta-analysis

Rhizobium inoculation has been widely applied to alleviate heavy metal (HM) stress in legumes grown in contaminated soils, but it has generated inconsistent results with regard to HM accumulation in plant tissues. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the performance of Rhizobium inoculation for regulating HM in legumes and reveal the general influencing factors and processes. The meta-analysis showed that Rhizobium inoculation in legumes primarily increased the total HM uptake by stimulating plant biomass growth rather than HM phytoavailability. Inoculation had no significant effect on the average shoot HM concentration (p > 0.05); however, it significantly increased root HM uptake by 61 % and root HM concentration by 7 % (p < 0.05), indicating safe agricultural production while facilitating HM phytostabilisation. Inoculation decreased shoot HM concentrations and increased root HM uptake in Vicia, Medicago and Glycine, whereas it increased shoot HM concentrations in Sulla, Cicer and Vigna. The effects of inoculation on shoot biomass were suppressed by nitrogen fertiliser and native microorganisms, and the effect on shoot HM concentration was enhanced by high soil pH, organic matter content, and phosphorous content. Inoculation-boosted shoot nutrient concentration was positively correlated with increased shoot biomass, whereas the changes in pH and organic matter content were insufficient to significantly affect accumulation outcomes. Nitrogen content changes in the soil were positively correlated with changes in root HM concentration and uptake, whereas nitrogen translocation changes in the tissues were positively correlated with changes in HM translocation. Phosphorus solubilisation could improve HM phytoavailability at the expense of slight biomass promotion. These results suggest that the diverse growth-promoting characteristics of Rhizobia influence the trade-off between biomass-HM phytoavailability and HM translocation, impacting HM accumulation outcomes. Our findings can assist in optimising the utilisation of legume-Rhizobium systems in HM-contaminated soils.

The levels, single and multiple health risk assessment of 23 metals in enteral nutrition formulas

Enteral nutrition formulas are products that provide macro and micronutrients to patients who cannot receive their nutrition orally. In this study, the levels of 23 metals known to have potential health risks were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in a total of 28 enteral nutrition formula. Metal exposure was calculated according to three different daily energy intake scenarios (Scenario 1 = 50% oral nutrition + 50% enteral nutrition formula, Scenario 2 = 25% oral nutrition + 75% enteral nutrition formula and Scenario 3 = 100% enteral nutrition formula) and evaluated in terms of non-carcinogenic health risks. The mean levels of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Se, Li, Be, V, As, Sr, Ag, Cd, Sb, Ba, La, Hg and Pb in the samples analyzed were determined 12,000 ± 3300, 64 ± 1.6, 10 ± 13, 1300 ± 400, 8500 ± 2500, 75 ± 30, 61 ± 21, 0.34 ± 0.36, 0.05 ± 0.08, 7.3 ± 2, 1.6 ± 0.6, 457 ± 166, 0.02 ± 0.1, 0.14 ± 0.12, 0.01 ± 0.1, 74 ± 103, 0.63 ± 0.4, 0.05 ± 0.03 and 0.14 ± 0.7 μg/L. These metals were considered safe in terms of non-carcinogenic health risks when analyzed individually. However, when the target hazard quotient values of all metals were evaluated together, hazard index values were higher than the reference value of 1, for both men and women, indicating potential health risks.

Polyamines: Rising stars against metal and metalloid toxicity

Globally, metal/metalloid(s) soil contamination is a persistent issue that affects the atmosphere, soil, water and plant health in today's industrialised world. However, an overabundance of these transition ions promotes the excessive buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ion imbalance, which harms agricultural productivity. Plants employ several strategies to overcome their negative effects, including hyperaccumulation, tolerance, exclusion, and chelation with organic molecules. Polyamines (PAs) are the organic compounds that act as chelating agents and modulate various physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes under metal/metalloid(s) stress. Their catabolic products, including H2O2 and gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), are also crucial signalling molecules in abiotic stress situations, particularly under metal/metalloid(s) stress. In this review, we explained how PAs regulate genes and enzymes, particularly under metal/metalloid(s) stress with a specific focus on arsenic (As), boron (B), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn). The PAs regulate various plant stress responses by crosstalking with other plant hormones, upregulating phytochelatin, and metallothionein synthesis, modulating stomatal closure and antioxidant capacity. This review presents valuable insights into how PAs use a variety of tactics to reduce the harmful effects of metal/metalloid(s) through multifaceted strategies.

Microbial-assistance and chelation-support techniques promoting phytoremediation under abiotic stresses

Phytoremediation, the use of plants to remove heavy metals from polluted environments, has been extensively studied. However, abiotic stresses such as drought, salt, and high temperatures can limit plant growth and metal uptake, reducing phytoremediation efficiency. High levels of HMs are also toxic to plants, further decreasing phytoremediation efficacy. This manuscript explores the potential of microbial-assisted and chelation-supported approaches to improve phytoremediation under abiotic stress conditions. Microbial assistance involves the use of specific microbes, including fungi that can produce siderophores. Siderophores bind essential metal ions, increasing their solubility and bioavailability for plant uptake. Chelation-supported methods employ organic acids and amino acids to enhance soil absorption and supply of essential metal ions. These chelating agents bind HMs ions, reducing their toxicity to plants and enabling plants to better withstand abiotic stresses like drought and salinity. Managed microbial-assisted and chelation-supported approaches offer more efficient and sustainable phytoremediation by promoting plant growth, metal uptake, and mitigating the effects of heavy metal and abiotic stresses. These approaches not only boost plant growth and metal uptake but also alleviate the toxic effects of HMs and abiotic stresses like drought and salinity. By doing so, they make phytoremediation a more viable and effective solution for environmental remediation.

Shorebird droppings analysis: Microplastics and heavy metals in a key conservation reserve and adjoining sand beaches in the west coast of India

Coastlines are susceptible to plastic and heavy metal pollution, which can accumulate from both marine and terrestrial sources. Shorebirds, top-level predators in these fragile ecosystems are considered as indicators of environmental health. Here, we tested the occurrence of microplastics and heavy metals in the droppings of ten regular wintering migrant shorebird species in Kadalundi-Vallikkunnu Community Reserve and adjoining sand beaches during November, December and January, each year, between 2019 and 2021. Heavy metals were analysed by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and the microplastic polymer compositions were identified using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. We detected high concentrations of heavy metals such as Zinc, Copper, Cobalt, Chromium, Lead and Cadmium in droppings. Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polystyrene, Poly Vinyl Chloride, Nitrile and Polyethylene terephthalate were the polymers identified. Polystyrene (42.6 %) and chromium (ranges between 7.83 and 88.45 mg/kg) were found to be the most abundant contaminants in most of the species.

Bioaccumulation dynamics, noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of heavy metals in commercially valuable shellfish and finfish species from the world largest floating slum, Makoko, Nigeria

This study examined ten heavy metals in five species: Macrobrachium vollenhovenii, Penaeus monodon, P. notialis, Chloroscombrus chrysurus, and Pseudotolithus typus, from Makoko floating slum, Lagos Lagoon to discern their bioaccumulation potentials, sources of origin, and health implications. The concentrations were in this order: Fe (4.172-10.176) > Zn (1.310-5.754) > Mn (0.475-2.330) > Cu (0.238-1.735) > Pb (0.121-0.391) > Cd (0.055-0.283) > Co (0.056-0.144) > Ni (0.039-0.121) > Cr (0.022-0.095) > As (0.003-0.031) mg/kg. The MPDI denotes "low toxicity," and the BAF/BSAF revealed that benthic species had higher bioconcentration potentials. Multivariate analyses revealed that heavy metals exhibited mutual relationships during chemical transport, and their sources were both geogenic and human-induced. The HI values were below 1, and the TCR values were below the threshold of 1 × 10-4. This suggests that the probabilities of noncancer and carcinogenic risks in human populations due to long-term consumption of the evaluated species are unlikely.

Determination of soil environmental criteria for high-risk trace metals in urban park soils using improved CLEA model

The trace metals (TMs) accumulated in urban park soils can pose potential threats to human health, making the management of soil quality based on health risks critically important. Based on the human health risk assessment (HHRA) model coupled with Monte Carlo Simulation, this study improved the contaminated land exposure assessment (CLEA) model. Combined with local parameters, the Soil Environmental Criteria (SEC) for high-risk trace metals (TMs) in urban park soils were calculated. Results indicated that all the mean TCR (Total carcinogenic risk) values of seven TMs exceeded the risk threshold of 1E-06, suggesting a higher likelihood of carcinogenic risks for all populations. As and Cr presented the highest potential carcinogenic risks, and were identified as high-risk TMs in the study area. The traditional CLEA model was enhanced by incorporating region-specific data, optimizing exposure parameter calculations, and addressing parameter sensitivity and uncertainty. Using the improved CLEA model, the SEC values for high-risk TMs were calculated, revealing that the SEC values gradually increased from ages 1 to 18, while significantly decreased for individuals over 80 years old. This study effectively addresses issues of parameter uncertainty and sensitivity in the CLEA model, offering new insights for the development of soil environmental quality standards.

DbGTi protein attenuates chromium (VI)-induced oxidative stress via activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signalling pathway in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larval model

Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) contamination poses a significant threat to environmental and human health due to its ability to induce oxidative stress. Conventional strategies to counter Cr (VI)-induced oxidative stress, like antioxidants and chelating agents, face efficacy limitations and adverse effects. The present study is intended to counteract the limitations of conventional strategies by introducing a trypsin inhibitor isolated from Dioscorea bulbifera L. tubers, known as DbGTi protein, against Cr (VI)-induced developmental toxicity and oxidative stress. Through a comprehensive array of biochemical assays, behavioural tests, and gene expression analyses, this study interprets the underlying mechanisms of the DbGTi protein. Results demonstrated that the DbGTi protein effectively restored antioxidant defense systems, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase (GTPx), thereby mitigating cellular damage, reducing cell death, and enhancing neuro-biomarkers. qRT-PCR analysis of mRNA expression profiling revealed the upregulation of genes associated with antioxidant defense (sod, cat, gpx) and defense pathway (nrf2, hmox-1a), further highlighting the protective effects of DbGTi protein against Cr (VI)-induced oxidative stress.

Machine learning-driven assessment of heavy metal contamination in the impounded lakes of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project: Identifying spatiotemporal patterns and ecological risks

The Eastern Route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP-ER) traverses through impounded lakes that are potentially vulnerable to heavy metals (HMs) contamination although the understanding remains elusive. This study employed machine learning approaches, including super-clustering of Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA), to elucidate the spatiotemporal patterns and assess ecological risks associated with HMs in the surface sediments of Gao-Bao-Shaobo Lake (GBSL) and Dongping Lake (DPL). We collected 184 surface sediments from 47 stations across the two important impounded lakes over four seasons. The results revealed higher HMs concentrations in the south-central GBSL and west-central DPL, with a notable increase in contamination in autumn. The comprehensive risk assessment, utilizing various indicators such as the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), Improved Potential Ecological Risk Index (IPERI), Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF), and Enrichment Factor (EF), identified arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and chromium (Cr) as primary contaminants of concern. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, coupled with Spearman analysis, attributed over 70 % of HMs pollution to anthropogenic activities. This research provides a nuanced understanding of HMs pollution in the context of large-scale water diversion projects and offers a scientific basis for targeted pollution mitigation strategies.

Lignin Nanoparticles: Transforming Environmental Remediation

In the face of escalating environmental challenges driven by human activities, the quest for innovative solutions to counter pollution, contamination, and ecological degradation has gained paramount importance. Traditional approaches to environmental remediation often fall short in addressing the complexity and scale of modern-day environmental problems. As industries transition towards sustainable paradigms, the exploration of novel materials and technologies becomes crucial. Lignin nanoparticles have emerged as a promising avenue of exploration in this context. Once considered a mere byproduct, lignin's unique properties and versatile functional groups have propelled it to the forefront of environmental remediation research. This review paper delves into the resurgence of lignin from an environmental perspective, examining its pivotal role in carbon cycling and its potential to address various environmental challenges. The paper extensively discusses the synthesis, properties, and applications of lignin nanoparticles in diverse fields such as water purification and soil remediation. Moreover, it highlights the challenges associated with nanoparticle deployment, ranging from Eco toxicological assessments to scalability issues. Multidisciplinary collaboration and integration of research findings with real-world applications are emphasized as critical factors for unlocking the transformative potential of lignin nanoparticles. Ultimately, this review underscores lignin nanoparticles as beacons of hope in the pursuit of cleaner, healthier, and more harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature through innovative environmental remediation strategies.

Impact of arsenic on male and female reproductive function: a review of the pathophysiology and potential therapeutic strategies

Arsenic is a ubiquitous metalloid and heavy metal that contributes to the global decline in human fertility. Humans are constantly exposed to arsenic through biotic and abiotic sources, especially ingestion of arsenic-contaminated food and water. Its exposure is associated with several adverse health challenges, including reproductive toxicity. In spite of its reported adverse effects, arsenic exposure remains a global challenge. Hence, this study provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the impact and mechanism of arsenic on male and female reproductive function. Additionally, a review of the potential therapeutic strategies is presented. Evidence from the literature reveals that arsenic upregulates reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation which mediates arsenic-induced suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and inactivation of 3β-HSD and 17β-HSD activities, leading to reduced gonadal steroidogenesis. Through several oxidative stress-dependent signaling, arsenic induces the apoptosis of the germ cells, thus contributing to the development of infertility. At the moment, there is no specific treatment for arsenic-induced reproductive toxicity. However, increasing data form the scientific literature reveals the benefits of antioxidants in ameliorating arsenic-induced reproductive toxicity. These molecules suppress ROS generation and maintain optimal activities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, leading to optimal steroidogenesis and gametogenesis as well as improved germ cells. Overall, this study revealed the impact and associated mechanism of arsenic-induced reproductive toxicity. It also provides evidence from the literature demonstrating potential therapeutic measures in managing arsenic-induced reproductive toxicity.

Investigating the relationship of co-exposure to multiple metals with chronic kidney disease: An integrated perspective from epidemiology and adverse outcome pathways

Systematic studies on the associations between co-exposure to multiple metals and chronic kidney disease (CKD), as well as the underlying mechanisms, remain insufficient. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive perspective on the risk of CKD induced by multiple metal co-exposures through the integration of occupational epidemiology and adverse outcome pathway (AOP). The study participants included 401 male mine workers whose blood metal, β2-microglobulin (β2-MG), and cystatin C (Cys-C) levels were measured. Generalized linear models (GLMs), quantile g-computation models (qgcomp), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were utilized to identify critical nephrotoxic metals. The mean concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and manganese were 191.93, 3.92, 4.66, 3.11, 11.35, and 16.33 µg/L, respectively. GLM, LASSO, qgcomp, and BKMR models consistently identified lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic as the primary contributors to kidney toxicity. Based on our epidemiological analysis, we used a computational toxicology method to construct a chemical-genetic-phenotype-disease network (CGPDN) from the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD), DisGeNET, and GeneCard databases, and further linked key events (KEs) related to kidney toxicity from the AOP-Wiki and PubMed databases. Finally, an AOP framework of multiple metals was constructed by integrating the common molecular initiating events (reactive oxygen species) and KEs (MAPK signaling pathway, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, inflammation, hypertension, cell death, and kidney toxicity). This is the first AOP network to elucidate the internal association between multiple metal co-exposures and CKD, providing a crucial basis for the risk assessment of multiple metal co-exposures.

Risk assessment and soil heavy metal contamination near marble processing plants (MPPs) in district Malakand, Pakistan

Soil heavy metals (HMs) pollution is a growing global concern, mainly in regions with rapid industrial growth. This study assessed the concentrations, potential sources, and health risks of HMs in agricultural soils near marble processing plants in Malakand, Pakistan. A total of 21 soil samples were analyzed for essential and toxic HMs via inductively coupled plasma‒optical emission spectrometry (ICP‒OES), and probabilistic health risks were evaluated via Monte Carlo simulation. The concentrations (mg/kg) of Ca (29,250), P (805.5) and Cd (4.5) exceeded the average shale limits of 22,100, 700, and 3.0 mg/kg, respectively, and indices such as Nemerow's synthetic contamination index (NSCI) and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) categorized the soil sites as moderately polluted. The potential ecological risk index (PERI) indicated considerable to high ecological risk for As and Cd. The deterministic analysis indicated non-carcinogenic risks for children (HI > 1), whereas the probabilistic analysis suggested no significant risk (HI < 1) for both adults and children. Both methods indicated that the total cancer risk for Cr, Ni, Cd, and As exceeded the USEPA safety limits of 1.0E-06 and 1.0E-04. Sensitivity analysis identified heavy metal concentration, exposure duration, and frequency as key risk factors. The study suggested that HM contamination is mainly anthropogenic, poses a threat to soil and human health, and highlights the need for management strategies and surveillance programs to mitigate these risks.

Exposure to four typical heavy metals induced telomere shortening of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in relevant with declined urinary aMT6s in rats

Environmental heavy metals pollution have seriously threatened the health of human beings. An increasing number of researches have demonstrated that environmental heavy metals can influence the telomere length of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs), which implicate biological aging as well as predicts diseases. Our previous study has shown that methylmercury (MeHg)-induced telomere shortening in rat brain tissue was associated with urinary melatonin metabolite 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) levels. Here, we aimed to further elucidate the impact of 4 typical heavy metals (As, Hg, Cd and Pb) on telomere length of PBMCs and their association with urinary aMT6s in rats. In this study, eighty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized grouped into eleven groups. Among them, forty 3-month-old (young) and forty 12-month-old (middle-aged) rats were divided into young or middle-aged control groups as well as typical heavy metals exposed groups, respectively. Eight 24-month-old rats (old) was divided into aging control group. The results showed that MeHg exposure in young rats while sodium arsenite (iAs), MeHg, cadmium chloride (CdCl2), lead acetate (PbAc) exposure in middle-aged rats for 3 months significantly reduced the levels of and urinary aMT6s, as well as telomere length of PBMCs. In addition, they also induced abnormalities in serum oxidative stress (SOD, MDA and GPx) and inflammatory (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) indicators. Notably, there was a significant positive correlation between declined level of urinary aMT6s and the shortening of telomere length in PBMCs in rats exposed to 4 typical heavy metals. These results suggested that 4 typical heavy metals exposure could accelerate the reduction of telomere length of PBMCs partially by inducing oxidative stress and inflammatory in rats, while ageing may be an important synergistic factor. Urinary aMT6s detection may be a alternative method to reflect telomere toxic effects induced by heavy metal exposure.

Analytical Investigation of Phthalates and Heavy Metals in Edible Ice from Vending Machines Connected to the Italian Water Supply

Edible ice is often produced by special machines that can represent a source of significant chemical and microbiological contamination. In this work, the presence of phthalic acid esters (phthalates, PAEs) and heavy metals in ice cubes distributed by 77 vending machines installed in two different zones in southern Italy and fed by water from the public water supply was investigated. Solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) was used to evaluate contamination with four PAEs, which were selected because they are commonly used in the production of food-contact plastics, while inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) was used to quantify the heavy metals. It was found that ice samples, especially those from one of the two considered zones (zone 2), exceeded the dibutyl phthalate (DBP) threshold limit value; some ice cubes from the other zone (zone 1) instead showed levels of both lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) up to one order of magnitude higher than those observed in samples collected in zone 2 and higher than the maximum permitted values (European Directive n. 2184/2020). Since the water source connected to the ice vending machines was found to be free from significant levels of all considered target compounds and metals, the high levels of DBP, Ni, and Pb in ice cubes could be attributed to the components and/or to the state of repair of the ice vending machines themselves.

Evaluation of lead exposure effects on tissue accumulation, behavior, morphological and hemato-biochemical changes in common carp, Cyprinus carpio

BACKGROUND

Heavy metal pollution, particularly lead (Pb), poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and their inhabitants, threatening their delicate balance and long-term viability. This study highlights the urgent need to mitigate heavy metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigates Pb(NO3)2 exposure effects on tissue accumulation, behavioral abnormalities, and hemato-biochemical parameters in common carp (Cyprinus carpio), a widely distributed freshwater fish species.

METHODOLOGY

Fish (115 ± 5.23 g) were exposed to various Pb(NO3)2 concentrations for 10 and 20 days, representing control (0 %), 25 %, 50 %, and 75 % of the LC50 equivalent to 19.33, 38.66, and 58.0 mg/l, respectively. The standard manual procedure was used for blood sampling. The lead concentration in fish tissue was determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

RESULTS

Results revealed that fish gills showed significant (P < 0.05) increase in Pb(NO3)2 after 10 days, further rising after 20 days. Liver concentrations also rose significantly (P < 0.05) with prolonged exposure and increasing Pb levels. Muscle had lower concentrations. Hematological parameters (RBC, WBC, HB, HCT) decreased with higher Pb(NO3)2 levels. Behavioral and morphological changes were significantly more pronounced in the exposure groups when compared to the control group. Hepatic enzyme activities (AST, ALT), glucose, and lipid levels increased, while total protein decreased.

CONCLUSIONS

The study highlights Pb(NO3)2 harmful effects on common carp, impacting tissue accumulation, hematological parameters, and biochemical disruptions. It emphasizes the need to monitor and mitigate heavy metal pollution in aquatic environments to safeguard freshwater organisms and ecosystems, and to further increase our understanding of Pb toxicity in freshwater ecosystems.

Pollution characteristics and source apportionment of heavy metal(loid)s in soil and groundwater of a retired industrial park

Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) pollution has become a common and complex problem in industrial parks due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. Here, soil and groundwater were sampled from a retired industrial park to investigate the pollution characteristics of HMs. Results show that Ni, Pb, Cr, Zn, Cd, and Cu were the typical HMs in the soil. Source analysis with the positive matrix factorization model indicates that HMs in the topsoil stemmed from industrial activities, traffic emission, and natural source, and the groundwater HMs originated from industrial activities, groundwater-soil interaction, groundwater-rock interaction, and atmosphere deposition. The sequential extraction of soil HMs reveals that As and Hg were mainly distributed in the residue fraction, while Ni, Pb, Cr, Zn, Cd, and Cu mainly existed in the mobile fraction. Most HMs either in the total concentration or in the bioavailable fraction preferred to retain in soil as indicated by their high soil-water partitioning coefficients (Kd), and the Kd values were correlated with soil pH, groundwater redox potential, and dissolved oxygen. The relative stable soil-groundwater circumstance and the low active fraction contents limited the vertical migration of soil HMs and their release to groundwater. These findings increase our knowledge about HMs pollution characteristics of traditional industrial parks and provide a protocol for HMs pollution scrutinizing in large zones.

Quantifying heavy metal and radionuclide contamination in fish and water proximal to a uranium tailings facility: A Linshui River basin investigation, China

BACKGROUND

The objective of this study is to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals and radionuclides in water and fish samples collected from six designated sampling stations along the Linshui River, in close proximity to a Uranium Tailing Pond situated in China. Additionally, it seeks to estimate the bioaccumulation of heavy metals and conduct risk assessments, both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic, for consumers.

METHODS

Water and fish samples (yellowhead catfish and common carp) were systematically collected from six stations along the river from January to June 2023, adhering to ethical standards and standard protocols for assessing water quality. Samples underwent chemical preparation and analysis for heavy metals using Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry and Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, and for radionuclides using gamma spectrometry, with all methods validated for accuracy.

RESULTS

The water samples showed metal and radionuclide concentrations within acceptable limits, except for higher levels of U and Th compared to background values. Heavy metal concentrations were higher in common carp compared to yellowhead catfish, with both species exhibiting a similar trend. While non-carcinogenic health risk, as indicated by target hazard quotients, was low for consumers, the health risk data emphasized the carcinogenic threats posed by U238 and Th234.

CONCLUSIONS

The study highlights the importance of implementing comprehensive river restoration measures. Additionally, the bioconcentration factor values indicate minimal accumulation of heavy metals in the muscle tissue of fish.

The genotoxicity impact of heavy metals on the Escherichia coli

In present work, the genotoxicity of Hg2+, Ag+, Cr6+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, and Cr3+ was investigated via a quantitative toxicogenomics assay, to understand the toxic mechanism of heavy metals with greater depth. Under the experimental conditions, Hg2+, Ag+, and Cr6+ showed a more serious toxic impact on the expression of functional genes (eg., oxyR, katG, grxA, osmE, emrE, dinG) than Ni2+, Pb2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, and Cr3+, while the protein, oxidative, and membrane stress response pathways were more sensitive to the toxicity of Hg2+, Ag+, and Cr6+ than the DNA and general stress response pathways. Compared with the other kinds of heavy metals, Ni2+, Pb2+, Co2+, and Mn2+ altered the expression of functional genes (uvrY, recX, mutY, and sbmC) related to the DNA stress response pathways more seriously, while Zn2+ and Cr3+ changed the expression of the functional genes (yfjG, ydgL, ssrA, and osmC) associated with the general stress response pathway more significantly. Meanwhile, the toxicity of Ni2+, Pb2+, Co2+, and Mn2+ was slightly higher than that of Zn2+ and Cr3+ in terms of the total value of transcriptional effect level Index (TELI) by detecting the promoter activities of different functional genes. In addition, to survive the toxicity of heavy metals, the expression of multidrug efflux genes (ydgL, cyoA, emrA, and emrE) and toxicity-resistant genes (Ion, dnaJ, clpB, mutY, dnaK, rpoD, sbmC) mainly functioned.

Metabolomic insights and bioactive efficacies of Tragopogon dubius root fractions: Antioxidant and antiproliferative assessments

Tragopogon dubius is commonly consumed as a vegetable and used in traditional medicine for treating inflammatory skin conditions and cutaneous swelling. Despite known pharmacological properties of its leaves and roots, many of its biological characteristics and active phytochemicals remain unexplored. The present study investigates the phytochemical composition, antioxidant, and anticancer properties of methanolic root extracts and isolated fractions (TdRM-1 and TdRM-2) of T. dubius. Utilizing preparative thin-layer chromatography, the crude extract was successfully separated into TdRM-1 and TdRM-2, characterized by GC-MS and FTIR analysis, revealing a diverse range of bioactive compounds including terpenes, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Qualitative phytochemical screening indicated the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, alkaloids, and other phytoconstituents. Advanced UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS analysis identified 54 metabolites, significantly contributing to the chemical profiling of the extract. The antioxidant activities of the fractions were quantitatively assessed using ABTS, DPPH, and superoxide radical scavenging assays, where TdRM-2 exhibited superior activity with IC50 values ranging from 51.29 to 60.03 μg/mL. Anticancer potential was evaluated against A549, LN-18, and MCF-7 cancer cell lines, demonstrating that TdRM-2 significantly inhibited cell proliferation with GI50 values as low as 31.62 μg/mL for A549 cells. Additionally, fluorescence microscopy revealed that TdRM-2 induces apoptosis, indicated by changes in nuclear morphology and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining indicate that the TdRM-2 fractions from T. dubius can significantly inhibit the growth of A-549, LN-18, and MCF-7 cancer cell lines by inducing apoptosis These findings suggest that T. dubius root extracts, particularly the TdRM-2 fraction, hold promising therapeutic potential due to their significant antioxidant and anticancer activities, underpinned by their rich phytochemical composition. This study underscores the importance of T. dubius as a source of natural bioactive compounds with potential health benefits.

Co-exposure to multiple heavy metals and metalloid induces dose dependent modulation in antioxidative, inflammatory, DNA damage and apoptic pathways progressing to renal dysfunction in mice

Humans are exposed to a cocktail of heavy metal toxicants at the same time in the environment rather than single metal. The kidney is often a site of early damage due to high renal contact to these pollutants. This study was done to examine the cumulative toxic effect of multiple elements prevalent in the environment. To explore the effect of subchronic exposure to heavy metal mixture male and female Swiss albino mice were randomly divided into 14 groups and given varying doses [MPL (maximum permissible limit), 1X, 5X, 10X, 50X, or 100X] of the multiple metals and metalloid mixtures via drinking water for 8 weeks. It was determined that metal treatment caused increased metal load in renal tissue. The kidney function deteriorated in response to 10X, 50X, 100X concentration of the dosing mixture was found associated to oxidative stress, glomerular damage, necrosis, cell death and further exacerbation of the inflammation.

Combined Toxic Effects of Lead and Glyphosate on Apis cerana cerana

Glyphosate (GY) is the most widely used herbicide in agriculture worldwide. Lead is a common heavy metal in the natural environment. Honeybees, as pollinators, are exposed to these pollutants. So far, few reports have evaluated the toxic effects of GY mixed with heavy metals on honeybees (Apis cerana cerana). This study found that the acute toxicity of lead (LC50 = 1083 mg/L) is much greater than that of GY (LC50 = 4764 mg/L) at 96 h. The acute toxicities of the mixed substances were as follows: LC50 = 621 mg/L of lead and LC50 = 946 mg/L of GY. The combination of lead and GY was more toxic than either of the individual substances alone. Compared to the individual toxicity, combined treatment significantly affected the bees' learning and cognitive abilities and changed the relative expression of genes related to immune defense and detoxification metabolism in A. c. cerana. The combination of lead and GY seriously affected the behavior and physiology of the studied honeybees. This study provides basic data for further research on the combined effects of GY and heavy metals on bee health. It also serves as a reference for effective colony protection.

Fe Crystalline Phases in Fe/C Composites Modulated the Selective Adsorption of Pb(II) from Industrial Wastewater with Cd(II): An Electronic-Scale Perspective

Fe oxide or Fe0-based materials display weak removal capacity for Pb(II), especially in the presence of Cd(II), and the electronic-scale mechanisms are not reported. In this study, Fe3C(220) modified black carbon (BC) [Fe3C(220)@BC] with high adsorption and selectivity for Pb(II) from industrial wastewater with Cd(II) was developed. The quantitative experiment suggested that Fe species accounted for 80.5-100 and 18.4-33.8% of Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal, respectively. Based on X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis, 57.3% of adsorbed Pb2+ was reduced to Pb0; however, 61.6% of Cd2+ existed on Fe3C@BC. Density functional theory simulation unraveled that Cd(II) adsorption was attributed to the cation-π interaction with BC, whereas that of Pb(II) was ascribed to the stronger interactions with different Fe phases following the order: Fe3C(220) > Fe0(110) > Fe3O4(311). Crystal orbital bond index and Hamilton population analyses were innovatively applied in the adsorption system and displayed a unique discovery: the stronger Pb(II) adsorption on Fe phases was mediated by a combination of covalent and ionic bonding, whereas ionic bonding was mainly accounted for Cd(II) adsorption. These findings open a new chapter in understanding the functions of different Fe phases in mediating the fate and transport of heavy metals in both natural and engineered systems.

Heavy metals exposure and Alzheimer's disease: Underlying mechanisms and advancing therapeutic approaches

Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic are prevalent in the environment due to both natural and anthropogenic sources, leading to significant public health concerns. These heavy metals are known to cause damage to the nervous system, potentially leading to a range of neurological conditions including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study examines the complex relationship between heavy metal exposure and AD, focusing on the underlying mechanisms of toxicity and potential therapeutic approaches. This review article highlights how these metals can impair brain function through mechanisms such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and neurotransmitter disruption, ultimately contributing to neurodegenerative diseases like AD. It also addresses the challenges in diagnosing heavy metal-induced cognitive impairments and emphasizes the need for further research to explore effective treatment strategies and preventive measures against heavy metal exposure.

The Mechanisms of Cadmium Stress Mitigation by Fungal Endophytes from Maize Grains

Maize is a crucial staple crop that ensures global food security by supplying essential nutrients. However, heavy metal (HM) contamination inhibits maize growth, reduces output, and affects food security. Some endophytic fungi (EFs) in maize seeds have the potential to enhance growth and increase dry biomass, offering a solution to mitigate the negative effect of HM contamination. Using these functional EFs could help maintain crop production and ensure food safety in HM-contaminated areas. In the present study, the diversity of EFs in corn grains from various HM-contaminated areas in China was studied through culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. We tested the plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits of several dominant culturable isolates and evaluated the growth-promoting effects of these twenty-one isolates through pot experiments. Both studies showed that HM contamination increased the diversity and richness of corn grain EFs and affected the most dominant endophytes. Nigrospora and Fusarium were the most prevalent culturable endophytes in HM-contaminated areas. Conversely, Cladosporium spp. were the most isolated endophytes in non-contaminated areas. Different from this, Saccharomycopsis and Fusarium were the dominant EFs in HM-contaminated sites, while Neofusicoccum and Sarocladium were dominant in non-contaminated sites, according to a culture-independent analysis. PGP trait tests indicated that 70% of the tested isolates (forty-two) exhibited phosphorus solubilization, IAA production, or siderophore production activity. Specifically, 90% of the tested isolates from HM-contaminated sites showed better PGP results than 45% of the isolates from non-contaminated sites. The benefit of the twenty-one isolates on host plant growth was further studied through pot experiments, which showed that all the isolates could improve host plant growth. Among them, strains derived from HM-contaminated sites, including AK18 (Nigrospora), AK32 (Beauveria), SD93 (Gibberellia), and SD64 (Fusarium), had notable effects on enhancing the dry biomass of shoots and roots of maize under Cd stress. We speculate that the higher ratio of PGP EFs in corn grains from HM-contaminated areas may explain their competitiveness in such extreme environments. Fusarium and Cladosporium isolates show high PGP properties, but they can also be phytopathogenic. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate their pathogenic properties and safety for crops before considering their practical use in agriculture.

Quantification of trace heavy metals in environmental water, soil and atmospheric particulates with their bioaccessibility analysis

In this work, sulfhydryl (SH) functionalized magnetic covalent organic framework (COF) was synthesized by using 4-aldehyde phenyl butadiyne (DEBD) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) as the monomers and ethanedithiol as the modifier, with the aid of thiol-alkyne "click" reaction. The prepared Fe3O4@COFTAPB-DEBD@SH exhibited relatively strong magnetism (32.8 emu g-1), good stability and selectivity to target analytes with a high sulfhydryl content (0.24 mmol g-1). Based on Fe3O4@COFTAPB-DEBD@SH, a method combining magnetic solid phase extraction with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed for the quantitative analysis of trace metals. Under the optimal conditions, the method merited fast desorption kinetics (<2 min), adsorption kinetics (<20 min), fast phase separation (<1 min), high enrichment factor (100), and the detection limits for Cd, Hg, Pb and Bi were determined to be 1.18, 0.51, 4.91 and 0.39 ng L-1, respectively. A good resistance to complex matrices was demonstrated for the method in the analysis of soil, atmospheric particles and simulated pulmonary fluids samples. Certified reference materials (coal fly ash GBW08401 and soil GBW07427) were employed to validate the accuracy of the method. Four target metals in the range of 12.9-215 ng L-1, 0.06-24.6 μg g-1 and 0.52-33.1 ng m-3 were found in local water, soil and atmospheric particulates (PM), respectively. Additionally, artificial lysosome solution and gamble's solution were used to simulate human pulmonary fluid and the bioaccessibility of Cd, Hg, Pb and Bi in PM2.5 was evaluated to be 58.6-73.1 % and 1.3-7.1 %, respectively.

Elucidation of the CadA Protein 3D Structure and Affinity for Metals

The mitigation of cadmium (Cd) pollution, a significant ecological threat, is of paramount importance. Pseudomonas aeruginosa harbors 2 Cd resistance genes, namely, cadR and cadA. Presently, our focus is on the identification and characterization of the cation-transporting P-type ATPase (cadA) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa BC15 through in silico methods. The CadA protein and its binding capacities remain poorly understood, with no available structural elucidation. The presence of the cadA gene in P aeruginosa was confirmed, showing a striking 99% sequence similarity with both P aeruginosa and P putida. Phylogenetic analysis unveiled the evolutionary relationship between CadA protein sequences from various Pseudomonas species. Physicochemical analysis demonstrated the stability of CadA, revealing a composition of 690 amino acids, a molecular weight of 73 352.85, and a predicted isoelectric point (PI) of 5.39. Swiss-Model homology modelling unveiled a 33.73% sequence homology with CopA (3J09), and the projected structure indicated that 89.3% of amino acid residues were situated favourably within the Ramachandran plot, signifying energetic stability. Notably, the study identified metal-binding sites in CadA, namely, H3, C30, C32, C35, H48, C89, and C106. Docking studies revealed a higher efficiency of Cd binding with CadA compared to other heavy metals. This underscores the crucial role of N-terminal cysteine residues in Cd removal. It is evident that CadA of P aeruginosa BC15 plays a crucial role in Cd tolerance, rendering it a potential microorganism for Cd toxicity bioremediation. The structural and functional elucidation of CadA, facilitated by this study, holds promise for advancing cost-effective strategies in the remediation of cadmium-contaminated environments.

Enhancing the phytoremediation efficiency of Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst. using LED lights: a sustainable approach for heavy metal pollution control

In this study, the impacts of LEDs on the phytoremediation of arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) by Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst. were investigated, along with the examination of the biochemical characteristics of plants exposed to metal-induced toxicity. In vitro multiple and rapid plant propagations were successfully achieved by adding 1.0 mg/L 6-Benzyl amino purine (BAP) to the Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal salt and vitamin culture medium. For plant-based remediation experiments, different concentrations of As (0-1.0 mg/L) and Hg (0-0.2 mg/L) were added to the water environment, and trials were conducted for four different application periods (1-21 days). White, red, and blue LEDs, as well as white fluorescent light, were preferred as the light environment. The results revealed that LED lights were more effective for heavy metal accumulation, with red LED light significantly enhancing the plant's phytoremediation capacity compared to other LED applications. Moreover, when examining biochemical stress parameters such as levels of photosynthetic pigments, protein concentrations, and lipid peroxidation, plants under red LED light showed better results. Generally, the lowest results were obtained under white fluorescent light. These findings contribute to phytoremediation studies by highlighting the integration of LED lights, thereby enabling the development of a more effective, cost-efficient, and environmentally sustainable remediation system compared to other treatment methods.

Role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in lead translocation from Bidens pilosa L. plants to soil

Bidens pilosa frequently forms a symbiotic association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This plant species can grow in Pb-polluted soils, accumulating Pb in its tissues. The aims of the study were to determine whether Pb accumulated in the tissues of B. pilosa can be transferred to the soil through AMF and to compare the role of AMF communities that have a history of exposure to the contaminant with those that have never been exposed. The experiment combined plants with and without Pb accumulated in their tissues, and inoculated with AMF collected from the rhizosphere of B. pilosa in soils contaminated and not contaminated with Pb. The results showed that AMF participate in the removal of Pb that had entered the plant and release it into the soil, as evidenced by the presence of Pb in the AMF spores and in the glomalin produced by AMF. We propose that Pb accumulation in AMF spores would be a protection mechanism that interrupts Pb uptake by the plant; however, that mechanism would not be fully exploited in detoxification, whereas the production of Pb-enriched glomalin could be an important detoxification mechanism to eliminate Pb already taken up by plants. AMF with a history of Pb exposure achieved only higher rates of root colonization, while AMF without previous exposure showed higher Pb concentration in the spores and higher glomalin production, and successfully removed Pb from both the roots and aboveground parts of the plant. The use of AMF communities not adapted to Pb may be a more effective option for microbe-mediated phytoremediation methods in which detoxification mechanisms are desirable.

Prenatal exposure to air pollutants and the risk of congenital heart disease: a Korean national health insurance database-based study

Air pollution and heavy metal exposure are emerging public health concerns. Prenatal exposure to air pollutants and heavy metals has been implicated in the development of congenital heart disease (CHD). However, the relationship between exposure to airborne heavy metals and CHD has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this large population-based study, we investigated the association between air pollutants, including airborne heavy metals, and the risk of CHD using national health insurance claims data from South Korea. Data regarding 1,129,442 newborns and their mothers were matched with air pollutant levels during the first 8 weeks of gestation. In the five-air pollutant model, we found significant positive correlations between prenatal exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2; odds ratio [OR] 6.843, 95% confidence interval [CI] 5.746-8.149) and cadmium (Cd; OR 1.513, 95% CI 1.187-1.930) and the risk of ventricular septal defects in newborns. This study highlights the association between prenatal exposure to air pollutants, including airborne heavy metals, and an elevated CHD risk. Further research is essential to validate and expand these findings, with the ultimate goal of enhancing public health outcomes.

Hazards of toxic metal(loid)s: Exploring the ecological and health risk in soil-crops systems with long-term sewage sludge application

Sewage sludge (SS) is commonly used as agricultural fertilizer worldwide. However, the toxic metal(loid)s in SS raises concerns about soil contamination and the potential risks to human health. This study, conducted since 2007 on the North China Plain, examines the impact of SS use on crops. An experiment was designed with five treatments: conventional fertilization (CK) and four levels of SS application (W1, W2, W3, and W4: 4.5, 9.0, 18.0, and 36.0 t ha-1, respectively). Soil concentrations of eight toxic metal(loid)s (Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, As, and Hg) were analyzed to assess pollution risk using various indices. Health risks associated with maize and wheat grains were also evaluated. Additionally, the impact of long-term SS application on crop yield, soil quality, and human health within a wheat-maize rotation system was examined. SS application increased wheat and maize yields by 5.37 to 19.08 % and 6.97 to 17.94 %, respectively, across treatments W2 to W4. Despite the toxic metal(loid)s in the grains remaining within safe limits, their concentrations showed an upward trend, especially under the W4 treatment. Moreover, SS application significantly increased the soil Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Hg levels (P < 0.05) without exceeding the national standards. The geo-accumulation index values revealed rising pollution levels for Zn, Cu, Cd, and Hg, which shifted from no contamination to moderate contamination and then to moderate-to-high contamination, yet the overall pollution level remained safe. Soil ecological risks increased from moderate to serious, with Hg posing the greatest risk, particularly under the W4 treatment. Long-term crop intake from the area significantly exposed children and adults to As, contributing 42.12 % and 34.62 % to hazard index (HI), respectively. The HI values for toxic metal(loid)s in these grains surpassed one in both age groups, suggesting health risks from long-term SS cultivated crops.

Response patterns of the microbiome during hexavalent chromium remediation by Tagetes erecta L

Chromium pollution, particularly hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], may threaten the environment and human health. This study investigated the potential of Tagetes erecta L. (Aztec marigold) for phytoremediation of soil contaminated with Cr(VI), and focused on the effects of varying concentrations of Cr(VI) on both the physicochemical properties of soil and microbiome of Tagetes erecta L. We observed that Tagetes erecta L. showed tolerance to Cr(VI) stress and maintained normal growth under these conditions, as indicated by bioconcentration factors of 0.33-0.53 in shoots and 0.39-0.70 in roots. Meanwhile, the structure and diversity of bacterial communities were significantly affected by Cr(VI) pollution. Specifically, Cr(VI) had a more significant effect on the microbial community structure in the endophytic of Tagetes erecta L. than in the rhizosphere (p < 0.05). The genera Devosia and Methylobacillus were positively correlated with Cr(VI) concentrations. Biomarkers such as Bacilli and Pseudonocardia were identified under the different Cr(VI)-contaminated treatments using LEfSe. In addition, the interaction and stability of the endophytic microbiome were enhanced under Cr(VI) stress. This study explored the interactions between heavy metals, microorganisms, and plants, providing valuable insights for developing in situ bioremediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soils.

Microbial mediated remediation of heavy metals toxicity: mechanisms and future prospects

Heavy metal pollution has become a serious concern across the globe due to their persistent nature, higher toxicity, and recalcitrance. These toxic metals threaten the stability of the environment and the health of all living beings. Heavy metals also enter the human food chain by eating contaminated foods and cause toxic effects on human health. Thus, remediation of HMs polluted soils is mandatory and it needs to be addressed at higher priority. The use of microbes is considered as a promising approach to combat the adverse impacts of HMs. Microbes aided in the restoration of deteriorated environments to their natural condition, with long-term environmental effects. Microbial remediation prevents the leaching and mobilization of HMs and they also make the extraction of HMs simple. Therefore, in this context recent technological advancement allowed to use of bioremediation as an imperative approach to remediate polluted soils. Microbes use different mechanisms including bio-sorption, bioaccumulation, bioleaching, bio-transformation, bio-volatilization and bio-mineralization to mitigate toxic the effects of HMs. Thus, keeping in the view toxic HMs here in this review explores the role of bacteria, fungi and algae in bioremediation of polluted soils. This review also discusses the various approaches that can be used to improve the efficiency of microbes to remediate HMs polluted soils. It also highlights different research gaps that must be solved in future study programs to improve bioremediation efficency.

DNA demethylase TET2-mediated reduction of HADHB expression contributes to cadmium-induced malignant progression of colorectal cancer

Environmental exposure to the cadmium (Cd) has been shown to be a risk factor for colorectal cancer (CRC) progression, but the exact mechanism has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we found that chronic Cd (3 μM) exposure promoted the proliferation, adhesion, migration, and invasion of CRC cells in vitro, as well as lung metastasis in vivo. RNA-seq and TCGA-COAD datasets revealed that decreased hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase trifunctional multienzyme complex subunit beta (HADHB) expression may be a crucial factor in Cd-induced CRC progression. Further analysis using qRT-PCR and tissue microarrays from CRC patients showed that HADHB expression was significantly reduced in CRC tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues, and low HADHB expression was associated with adverse clinical features and poor overall survival, either directly or through TNM stage. Furthermore, HADHB was found to play an important role in the Cd-induced malignant metastatic phenotype of CRC cells and lung metastasis in mice. Mechanistically, we discovered that chronic Cd exposure resulted in hypermethylation of the HADHB promoter region via inhibition of DNA demethylase tet methylcytosine dioxygenase 2 (TET2), which then led to decreased HADHB expression and activation of the FAK signaling pathway, and ultimately contributed to CRC progression. In conclusion, this study provided a new potential insight and evaluable biomarker for Cd exposure-induced CRC progression and treatment.

Evaluation of heavy metal accumulation and tolerance in oxalic acid-treated Phragmites australis wetlands for textile effluent remediation

Water contamination with metals poses significant environmental challenges. The occurrence of heavy metals (HMs) prompts modifications in plant structures, emphasizing the necessity of employing focused safeguarding measures. Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) emerge as particularly menacing toxins due to their high accumulation potential. Increasing the availability of organic acids is crucial for optimizing toxic metal removal via phytoremediation. This constructed wetland system (CWs) was used to determine how oxalic acid (OA) treatments of textile wastewater (WW) effluents affected morpho-physiological characteristics, antioxidant enzyme activity, oxidative stress, and HM concentrations in Phragmites australis. Multiple treatments, comprising the application of OA at a concentration of 10 mM and WW at different dilutions (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), were employed, with three replications of each treatment. WW stress decreased chlorophyll and carotenoid content, and concurrently enhanced HMs adsorption and antioxidant enzyme activities. Furthermore, the application of WW was found to elevate oxidative stress levels, whereas the presence of OA concurrently mitigated this oxidative stress. Similarly, WW negatively affected soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) and the total soluble proteins (SP) in both roots and shoots. Conversely, these parameters showed improvement with OA treatments. P. australis showed the potential to enhance HM accumulation under 100% WW stress. Specifically, there is an increase in root SP ranging from 9% to 39%, an increase in shoot SP from 6% to 91%, and an elevation in SPAD values from 4% to 64% compared to their respective treatments lacking OA inclusion. The OA addition resulted in decreased EL contents in the root and shoot by 10%-19% and 13%-15%, MDA by 9%-14% and 9%-20%, and H2O2 by 14%-21% and 9%-17%, in comparison to the respective treatments without OA. Interestingly, the findings further revealed that the augmentation of OA also contributed to an increased accumulation of Cr, Cd, and Pb. Specifically, at 100% WW with OA (10 mM), the concentrations of Cr, Pb, and Cd in leaves rose by 164%, 447%, and 350%, in stems by 213%, 247%, and 219%, and in roots by 155%, 238%, and 195%, respectively. The chelating agent oxalic acid effectively alleviated plant toxicity induced by toxins. Overall, our findings demonstrate the remarkable tolerance of P. australis to elevated concentrations of WW stress, positioning it as an eco-friendly candidate for industrial effluent remediation. This plant exhibits efficacy in restoring contaminants present in textile effluents, and notably, oxalic acid emerges as a promising agent for the phytoextraction of HMs.

Groundwater hydrochemistry, source identification and health assessment based on self-organizing map in an intensive mining area in Shanxi, China

The Changzhi Basin in Shanxi is renowned for its extensive mining activities. It's crucial to comprehend the spatial distribution and geochemical factors influencing its water quality to uphold water security and safeguard the ecosystem. However, the complexity inherent in hydrogeochemical data presents challenges for linear data analysis methods. This study utilizes a combined approach of self-organizing maps (SOM) and K-means clustering to investigate the hydrogeochemical sources of shallow groundwater in the Changzhi Basin and the associated human health risks. The results showed that the groundwater chemical characteristics were categorized into 48 neurons grouped into six clusters (C1-C6) representing different groundwater types with different contamination characteristics. C1, C3, and C5 represent uncontaminated or minimally contaminated groundwater (Ca-HCO3 type), while C2 signifies mixed-contaminated groundwater (HCO3-Ca type, Mixed Cl-Mg-Ca type, and CaSO4 type). C4 samples exhibit impacts from agricultural activities (Mixed Cl-Mg-Ca), and C6 reflects high Ca and NO3- groundwater. Anthropogenic activities, especially agriculture, have resulted in elevated NO3- levels in shallow groundwater. Notably, heightened non-carcinogenic risks linked to NO3-, Pb, F-, and Mn exposure through drinking water, particularly impacting children, warrant significant attention. This research contributes valuable insights into sustainable groundwater resource development, pollution mitigation strategies, and effective ecosystem protection within intensive mining regions like the Changzhi Basin. It serves as a vital reference for similar areas worldwide, offering guidance for groundwater management, pollution prevention, and control.

Thyroid under siege: Unravelling the toxic impact of real-life metal mixture exposures in Wistar rats

This study explored the effect of a toxic metal(oid) mixture (cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury, chromium, and nickel) on thyroid function in Wistar rats exposed for 28 or 90 days. Dose levels were determined based on prior human-biomonitoring investigation. The experiment included control (male/female rats, 28 and 90 days) and treated groups, reflecting the lower confidence limit of the Benchmark Dose (BMDL) for hormone levels (M1/F1, 28 and 90 days), median concentrations (M2/F2, 28 and 90 days), 95th percentile concentrations (M3/F3, 28 and 90 days) measured in a human study, and reference values for individual metals extracted from the literature (M4/F4, 28 days only). Blood and thyroid gland samples were collected at the experimental termination. Serum TSH, fT3, fT4, T3, and T4 levels were measured, and SPINA-GT and SPINA-GD parameters were calculated. In silico analysis, employing the Comparative Toxicogenomic Database and ToppGene Suite portal, aimed to reveal molecular mechanisms underlying the observed effects. Results showed greater sensitivity in the female rats, with significant effects observed at lower doses. Subacute exposure increased TSH, fT3, and T3 levels in females, while subchronic exposure in males decreased TSH and fT3 levels and increased fT4. Subacute exposure induced changes even at allegedly safe doses, emphasizing potential health risks. Histological abnormalities were observed in all the treated groups. In silico findings suggested that toxic metal exposure contributes to thyroid disorders via oxidative stress, disruption of micronutrients, interference with hormone synthesis, and gene expression dysregulation. These results indicate that seemingly safe doses in single-substance research can adversely affect thyroid structure and function when administered as a mixture. These findings highlight the complex impact of toxic metal exposure on thyroid health, emphasizing that adhering to accepted safety limits for single-substance research fails to account for adverse effects on thyroid structure and function upon exposures to metal mixtures.

Health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in road dust via dermal exposure pathway from a low latitude plateau provincial capital city: The importance of toxicological verification

The human health risk assessment through the dermal exposure of metal (loid)s in dust from low latitude and high geological background plateau cities was largely unknown. In this study, the road dust samples were harvested from a typical low-latitude plateau provincial capital city Kunming, Southwest China. The total concentration and dermal bioaccessibility of heavy metal (loid)s in road dust were determined, and their health risks as well as cytotoxicity on human skin keratinocytes were also assessed. The average concentrations of As (28.5 mg/kg), Cd (2.65 mg/kg), Mn (671 mg/kg), and Zn (511 mg/kg) exceeded the soil background values. Arsenic had the highest bioaccessibility after 2 h (3.79%), 8 h (4.24%), and 24 h (16.6%) extraction. The dermal pathway when bioaccessibility is considered has a higher hazard quotient than the conventional method using total metal(loid)s in the dust. In addition, toxicological verification suggested that the dust extracts suppressed the cell viability, increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and DNA damage, and eventually activated the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis pathway, evidenced by the upregulation of Caspase-3/9, Bax, and Bak-1. Cadmium was positively correlated with the mRNA expression of Bax. Taken together, our data indicated that both dermal bioaccessibility and cytotoxicity should be considered for accurate human skin health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in road dust, which may provide new insight for accurate human health risk assessment and environmental management.

Improving sunflower growth and arsenic bioremediation in polluted environments: Insights from ecotoxicology and sustainable mitigation approaches

The issue of arsenic (As) contamination in the environment has become a critical concern, impacting both human health and ecological equilibrium. Addressing this challenge requires a comprehensive strategy encompassing water treatment technologies, regulatory measures for industrial effluents, and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices. In this study, diverse strategies were explored to enhance As accumulation in the presence of Acinetobacter bouvetii while safeguarding the host from the toxic effects of arsenate exposure. The sunflower seedlings associated with A. bouvetii demonstrated a favorable relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) even less than 100 ppm of As stress. Remarkably, the NAR and RGR of A. bouvetii-associated seedlings outperformed those of control seedlings cultivated without A. bouvetii in As-free conditions. Additionally, a markedly greater buildup of bio-transformed As was observed in A. bouvetii-associated seedlings (P = 0.05). An intriguing observation was the normal levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in A. bouvetii-associated seedlings, along with elevated activities of key enzymatic antioxidants like catalases (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidases (POD), along with non-enzymatic antioxidants (phenols and flavonoids). This coordinated antioxidant defense system likely contributed to the improved survival and growth of the host plant species amidst As stress. A. bouvetii not only augmented the growth of the host plants but also facilitated the uptake of bio-transformed As in the contaminated medium. The rhizobacterium's modulation of various biochemical and physiological parameters indicates its role in ensuring the better survival and progression of the host plants under As stress.

Moss biomass as effective biosorbents for heavy metals in contaminated water

The study explored batch adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions using moss biomass from Barbula consanguinea and Hyophila involuta, assessing removal efficiency concerning various parameters. Both moss species showed high removal rates for Cd(II) (87 % for B. consanguinea and 89 % for H. involuta) and Pb(II) (93 % for B. consanguinea and 94 % for H. involuta) from contaminated water, reaching equilibrium within 30 min. While Cd(II) removal was pH-independent, Pb(II) removal showed pH-dependence, peaking at pH 5.0-5.5. Adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that the Langmuir, Freundlich, Elovich, Sips, and Redlich-Peterson models best described Cd(II) and Pb(II) adsorption onto both moss species (except for Cd(II) adsorption onto H. involuta), with R 2  > 0.98. This confirms a heterogeneous surface with both monolayer and multilayer adsorption sites. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model confirmed chemisorption on moss biomass from both species. FTIR spectra identified major binding sites such as phenols, alkaloids, amines, alkenes, nitro compounds, and low-molecular-weight carbohydrates. EDS analysis validated the bonding of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions to the biomass surface by displacing Ca(II) ions. According to the Langmuir model, moss biomass exhibited selective adsorption, favoring Pb(II) over Cd(II). B. consanguinea showed a higher adsorption capacity than H. involuta, which is attributed to its higher negative zeta potential. This study underscores the novelty of moss biomass for heavy metal removal in wastewater treatment, highlighting its sustainability, effectiveness, cost-efficiency, versatility, and eco-friendliness.

La-doped MIL-88B(Fe)-NH2: a mixed-metal-organic framework photocatalyst for highly efficient reduction of Cr(vi) in an aqueous solution

With the aim to resolve the problem of water pollution, we herein propose a new photocatalyst based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), called La-doped MIL-88B(Fe)-NH2 (MIL-88B((1 - x)Fe/xLa)-NH2), which was designed and employed for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(vi) in aqueous solutions. MIL-88B((1-x)Fe/xLa)-NH2 materials with different x values were synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method. Their characteristics were investigated using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). We found that compared to pristine MIL-88B(Fe)-NH2 with a photocatalytic efficiency of 67.08, MIL-88B((1 - x)Fe/xLa)-NH2 materials with x = 0.010, 0.025 and 0.050 exhibit excellent photocatalytic efficiencies reaching 88.21, 81.19 and 80.26%, respectively, after only 30 minutes of irradiation at a small catalyst dosage of 0.2 g L-1. These La-doped MIL-88B(Fe)-NH2 photocatalysts can work well under mild conditions (pH = 6). Furthermore, they are robust-can be recycled for at least four consecutive runs without any activity loss. This novel material is promising for the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants.
