Abstract
OBJECTIVE Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a globally prevalent, severe chronic mental disorder, with cognitive dysfunction being one of its core symptoms. Notably, overweight is exceedingly common among individuals with SCZ, and overweight can also impact cognitive function. Therefore, the relationship between overweight and cognition in SCZ is a clinical issue that is in need of research attention. METHODS This study enrolled 77 patients with SCZ, including 36 overweight and 41 non-overweight patients. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess symptom severity, while cognitive functions were evaluated using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Electroencephalography (EEG) testing was performed, with power spectral analysis conducted across various frequency bands (δ, θ, α, β, low γ, and high γ). RESULTS Compared to non-overweight SCZ patients, those overweight exhibited significantly lower RBANS total and index scores in immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional abilities, and delayed memory. EEG spectral analysis revealed that overweight SCZ patients demonstrated significantly lower oscillation power ratios in the β, low γ, and high γ frequency bands compared to their non-overweight counterparts. Correlation analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between β wave activity and RBANS total scores among overweight SCZ patients, suggesting that reduced β power correlates with more severe cognitive dysfunction. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that overweight SCZ patients experience more severe cognitive impairments in a resting state than those who are not overweight, with significant differences in EEG spectrum observed in the β and γ frequency bands. Additionally, our study establishes a correlation between various EEG spectrum dimensions and cognition. This research highlights the effects of overweight on cognition in individuals with SCZ. Additionally, employing EEG technology to study cognitive function in overweight SCZ patients can offer valuable electrophysiological insights.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a signaling protein responsible for promoting neuroplasticity, is highly expressed in the central nervous system but can also be found in the blood. Since impaired brain plasticity is considered a cornerstone in the pathophysiology of MDD, measurement of BDNF in blood has been proposed as a potential biomarker in MDD. The aim of our study is to systematically review the literature for the effects of antidepressant treatments on blood BDNF levels in MDD and the suitability of blood BDNF as a biomarker for depression severity and antidepressant response. We searched Pubmed® and Cochrane library up to March 2024 in a systematic manner using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The search resulted in a total of 42 papers, of which 30 were included in this systematic review. Generally, we found that patients with untreated MDD have a lower blood BDNF level than healthy controls. Antidepressant treatments increase blood BDNF levels, and more evidently after pharmacological than non-pharmacological treatment. Neither baseline nor change in the blood BDNF level correlates with depression severity or treatment outcome, which undermines its use as a biomarker in MDD. Our review also highlights the importance of considering factors influencing the accuracy and reproducibility of BDNF measurements. We summarize considerations to help obtain more robust blood BDNF values and compile a list of recommendations to help streamline assessment of blood BDNF levels in future studies.

Abstract
Objectives: Inflammation contributes to disparate neurodevelopmental outcomes between preterm and term-born infants. In this context, DNA methylation may contribute to inflammation by affecting gene expression. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nuclear factor-kappa-B-inhibitor alpha (NFKBIA) are important genes for targeted DNA methylation analysis. The aims of this study were to (1) identify associations between inflammatory factors and BDNF and NFKBIA methylation, and (2) identify associations between BDNF and NFKBIA methylation and early neurobehavior in preterm infants. Methods: In a longitudinal cohort study of preterm infants born 28-31 weeks gestational age, blood samples were collected weekly for the quantification of inflammatory factors. We extracted DNA from saliva samples and quantified methylation of six BDNF cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites and five NFKBIA CpG sites. Neurobehavior was assessed using the Neurobehavioral Assessment of the Preterm Infant. Results: Sixty-five infants were included in the analysis. In females, inflammatory factors were positively associated with BDNF methylation of most CpG sites. Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist was negatively associated with NFKBIA methylation at two CpG sites. In males, interleukin-6 was negatively associated with BDNF and NFKBIA methylation at most CpG sites. In females, BDNF methylation at two sites was inversely associated with motor performance. In males, NFKBIA methylation at one site was inversely associated with motor performance. Conclusion: This study provides evidence for the relationship between inflammation and neurobehavior in preterm infants, working mechanistically through DNA methylation. The finding of a difference between males and females suggests that female infants are potentially more vulnerable to inflammation and warrants future study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the population of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), most studies compared the use of atypical antipsychotics, such as quetiapine, with the use of traditional haloperidol in patients with delirium of various forms and etiologies. The role of such agents in patients with hyperactive delirium is not fully understood. This study compares the effectiveness of quetiapine with haloperidol in treating the hyperactive form of delirium in terms of their effects on the Delirium Rating Scale-Revised-98 (DRS-R-98), length of stay in the ICU, and mortality in critically ill patients. METHODS One hundred adult patients diagnosed with hyperactive delirium were randomly assigned to receive either oral quetiapine (25-50 mg/day) or haloperidol (1-2 mg/day). The response, defined as "a DRS-R-98 severity score reduction from baseline of 50% or more" and a DRS-R-98 severity score of 12 or less without relapse, was the primary outcome. RESULTS The mean age of all patients was 68 ± 6 years. The study population's overall response rate was 92%. Response rates for the two groups were remarkably equal (p = 0.609). Secondary outcomes were comparable in both groups, such as ICU mortality (p = 0.496), in-hospital mortality (p = 0.321), in-hospital stay (p = 0.310), and the need for mechanical ventilation (p > 0.99). But the quetiapine group showed a statistically reduced mean ICU stay (10.1 ± 2.0 vs. 11.7 ± 2.6 days, p = 0.018) and increased sleeping hours per night (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Quetiapine may be equally as effective as haloperidol in treating the symptoms of hyperactive delirium in critically ill patients, with no mortality benefit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) decrease COVID-19 transmission. Reliability and validity of adherence to NPIs in accordance with normalization process theory (NPT) in coherent and convenient social subgroups using reflective measurement model assessment has not been evaluated. METHODS In February 2021, a sample of medical students and people with substance use disorders in treatment as coherent (based on continuous probability distribution) vs. convenient groups (based on convenience, not equal probability) composed of travellers and COVID-19 suspected persons from Split-Dalmatia County (SDC) (n = 656) in the Mediterranean completed self-administered surveys. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to measure reflective model assessment of adherence to NPIs according to NPT. RESULTS PLS-SEM reflective model assessment provided two-group specific factors in inverse relationships which determined adherence to NPIs with excellent goodness-of-fit [χ2 = 1.292, df = 1; P = 0.297, CFI = 1, TLI = 0.997, RMSEA = 0.011 (90% CI 0-0.105), RMSEA P = 0.604, SRMR = 0.008, Hoelter CN (α = 0.05) = 2322.757]. Significant negative factors covariance estimate (-0.716) revealed an inverse relationship between first (adherence to NPIs and internal locus of control (LoC) (0.640)) and second factor; young adulthood age (≤25) and highest level of education (1362). As the first factor increased the second tended to decrease. LoC is expected potential mechanism by which sex (MLsex = -0.017, SE = 0.007, P < 0.016) and belonging to coherent subgroups (MLgroup = -0.008, SE = 0.003, P = 0.015) can produce indirect effect of adherence to NPIs. CONCLUSIONS Coherent subgroups had a more pronounced tendency toward integration of NPIs in everyday life. Group factors that facilitate the normalization were higher educated younger adults with a tendency toward external LoC.

Abstract
Depression is among the most common psychiatric illnesses, which imposes a major socioeconomic burden on patients, caregivers, and the public health system. Treatment with classical antidepressants (e.g. tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonine reuptake inhibitors), which primarily affect monoaminergic systems has several limitations, such as delayed onset of action and moderate efficacy in a relatively large proportion of depressed patients. Furthermore, depression is highly heterogeneus, and its different subtypes, including post-partum depression, involve distinct neurobiology, warranting a differential approach to pharmacotherapy. Given these shortcomings, the need for novel antidepressants that are superior in efficacy and faster in onset of action is fully justified. The development and market introduction of rapid-acting antidepressants has accelerated in recent years. Some of these new antidepressants act through the GABAergic system. In this review, we discuss the discovery, efficacy, and limitations of treatment with classic antidepressants. We provide a detailed discussion of GABAergic neurotransmission, with a special focus on GABAA receptors, and possible explanations for the mood-enhancing effects of GABAergic medications (in particular neurosteroids acting at GABAA receptors), and, ultimately, we present the most promising molecules belonging to this family which are currently used in clinical practice or are in late phases of clinical development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quetiapine fumarate (QTP) is commonly prescribed for schizophrenic patient, typically available in tablet or oral suspension form, presenting challenges such as administration difficulties, fear of choking and distaste for its bitter taste. Fast melt films (FMF) offer an alternative dosage form with a simple development process, ease of administration and rapid drug absorption and action onset. OBJECTIVE This study aims to prepare FMF with different formulations using solvent casting methods and to compare the effects of different drying methods, including oven drying and freeze drying, on the properties of the films. METHODS Various formulations were created by manipulating polymer types (starch, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and guar gum) at different concentrations, along with fixed concentrations of QTP and other excipients. Characterization tests including surface morphology, weight, thickness, pH, tensile strength, elongation length, Young's modulus, folding endurance and disintegration time were conducted. The optimal FMF formulation was identified and further evaluated for moisture and drug content, dissolution behavior, accelerated stability, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and palatability. RESULTS FMF containing 10 mg guar gum/film developed using oven drying emerged as the optimum choice, exhibiting desirable film appearance, ultra-thin thickness (0.453 ± 0.002 mm), appropriate pH for oral intake (pH 5.0), optimal moisture content of 11.810%, rapid disintegration (52.67 ± 1.53 s), high flexibility (folding endurance > 300 times) and lower Young's modulus (1.308 ± 0.214). CONCLUSION Oven drying method has been proven to be favorable for developing FMF containing QTP, meeting all testing criteria and providing an alternative option for QTP prescription.

Abstract

Magnesium-L-threonate has recently been found to have protective effects on learning and memory in aged and Alzheimer's disease model mice. However, the effects of magnesium-L-threonate on the gut microbiota in Alzheimer's disease remain unknown. Previously, we reported that magnesium-L-threonate treatment improved cognition and reduced oxidative stress and inflammation in a double-transgenic line of Alzheimer's disease model mice expressing the amyloid-β precursor protein and mutant human presenilin 1 (APP/PS1). Here, we performed 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze changes in the microbiome and serum metabolome following magnesium-L-threonate exposure in a similar mouse model. Magnesium-L-threonate modulated the abundance of three genera in the gut microbiota, decreasing Allobaculum and increasing Bifidobacterium and Turicibacter. We also found that differential metabolites in the magnesium-L-threonate-regulated serum were enriched in various pathways associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The western blotting detection on intestinal tight junction proteins (zona occludens 1, occludin, and claudin-5) showed that magnesium-L-threonate repaired the intestinal barrier dysfunction of APP/PS1 mice. These findings suggest that magnesium-L-threonate may reduce the clinical manifestations of Alzheimer's disease through the microbiota-gut-brain axis in model mice, providing an experimental basis for the clinical treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
Video recordings accurately capture facial expression movements; however, they are difficult for face perception researchers to standardise and manipulate. For this reason, dynamic morphs of photographs are often used, despite their lack of naturalistic facial motion. This study aimed to investigate how humans perceive emotions from faces using real videos and two different approaches to artificially generating dynamic expressions - dynamic morphs, and AI-synthesised deepfakes. Our participants perceived dynamic morphed expressions as less intense when compared with videos (all emotions) and deepfakes (fearful, happy, sad). Videos and deepfakes were perceived similarly. Additionally, they perceived morphed happiness and sadness, but not morphed anger or fear, as less genuine than other formats. Our findings support previous research indicating that social responses to morphed emotions are not representative of those to video recordings. The findings also suggest that deepfakes may offer a more suitable standardized stimulus type compared to morphs. Additionally, qualitative data were collected from participants and analysed using ChatGPT, a large language model. ChatGPT successfully identified themes in the data consistent with those identified by an independent human researcher. According to this analysis, our participants perceived dynamic morphs as less natural compared with videos and deepfakes. That participants perceived deepfakes and videos similarly suggests that deepfakes effectively replicate natural facial movements, making them a promising alternative for face perception research. The study contributes to the growing body of research exploring the usefulness of generative artificial intelligence for advancing the study of human perception.

Abstract
Caregivers play a critical role in supporting youth experiencing persisting symptoms after concussion (PSAC). However, there are limited empirically validated interventions tailored to the specific needs of caregivers, such as improving concussion knowledge and supporting psychosocial wellbeing. This study aims to describe the development of a virtual group intervention for caregivers of youth experiencing PSAC, Move&Connect-Caregivers (M&C-C), and examine its feasibility. Nine mothers participated across two M&C-C groups. Feasibility metrics and semi-structured interviews were collected and analyzed using descriptive and qualitative content analysis. Results suggest that M&C-C is a feasible intervention. By merging social support, concussion psychoeducation, and active skill building, M&C-C is meaningful for caregivers supporting their children experiencing PSAC.

Abstract
Strict social isolation and physical distancing measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic had significant implications for the psychological well-being of middle-aged and older adults. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with depressive symptoms during the pandemic period among individuals who reported no significant depressive symptoms before the pandemic. Individuals from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging without a previous report of significant depressive symptoms across Waves 6 (2016) and 7 (2018) were investigated for the development of depressive symptoms in Wave 8 (2020). The multivariable logistic regression results revealed that both men and women who participated in social gatherings and physical exercise less than once a week were associated with an increase in the likelihood of depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR] 2.88; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.80-4.61 and OR 2.61; 95% CI 1.64-4.15, respectively for men and OR 2.58; 95% CI 1.80-3.70 and OR 1.51; 95% CI 1.02-2.23, respectively for women). In addition, unmarried men (OR 2.38; 95% CI 1.37-4.14) and women with one chronic disease (OR 1.98; 95% CI 1.14-3.43) or two or more chronic diseases (OR 2.28; 95% CI 1.31-3.99) reported a significant increase in the likelihood of depressive symptoms. Regular social gatherings and physical exercise were identified as key factors in mitigating depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. The findings can inform the development of public health strategies that promote regular social interactions and physical activity to enhance the psychological resilience and overall well-being of middle-aged and older adults in the endemic era.

Abstract
The kidney-brain axis is a bidirectional communication network connecting the kidneys and the brain, potentially affected by inflammation, uremic toxin, vascular injury, neuronal degeneration, and so on, leading to a range of diseases. Numerous studies emphasize the disruptions of the kidney-brain axis may contribute to the high morbidity of neurological disorders, such as cognitive impairment (CI) in the natural course of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although the pathophysiology of the kidney-brain axis has not been fully elucidated, epidemiological data indicate that patients at all stages of CKD have a higher risk of developing CI compared with the general population. In contrast to other reviews, we mentioned some commonly used medicines in CKD that may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of CI. Revealing the pathophysiology interactions between kidney damage and brain function can reduce the potential risk of future CI. This review will deeply explore the characteristics, indicators, and potential pathophysiological mechanisms of CKD-related CI. It will provide a theoretical basis for identifying CI that progresses during CKD and ultimately prevents and treats CKD-related CI.

Abstract
Numerous studies have identified connections between child maltreatment and sleep-related issues. However, poor is known on potential links between sleep patterns and day-to-day functioning, along with psychopathology in maltreated youths. Additionally, existing research on the relationship between sleep difficulties and maltreatment often lacks investigation into specific sleep difficulty profiles across different age ranges. The current study aimed to determine the prevalence of diverse sleep disturbance profiles in a sample of maltreated children and adolescents, exploring distinct sleep disorder profiles based on sex, age, and the type of maltreatment experienced. Potential variations in adaptive and psychopathological profiles between maltreated children with and without sleep disturbances were also explored. This retrospective study included 91 children and adolescents (56% males, 44% females), aged 6 to 17, with a history of maltreatment (physical maltreatment, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, or neglect), referring for a neuropsychiatric and psychological evaluation at a pediatric hospital. Data were obtained through a retrospective file review. Sleep difficulties were measured through the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children; cognitive abilities, adaptive skills, and emotional and behavioral features were also investigated. Among maltreated youth, difficulties in initiating and maintaining sleep were the most frequently observed by caregivers. Poor sex differences emerged, whereas adolescents exhibited more daytime somnolence than school-age children. Children with sleep difficulties exhibited more anxiety symptoms and worse global functioning in comparison with children without sleep difficulties.Conclusion: Considering the vital impact of sleep quality on healthy development, practitioners should offer tailored services to child maltreatment victims. Enhancing the sleep quality of these children could help foster their resilience.

Abstract
Patients with depressive disorders are especially prone to suicide risk. Among the clinical predictors of suicidality, those specifically related to depressive disorders have not been accurately detailed. Our aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting longitudinal predictors of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide death within depression, including diagnostic subtypes, symptoms, clinical course, and assessment scales. A systematic search of the literature between 2001 and 2022 identified 4422 references, among which 19 studies providing 45 different predictors of suicidality met the inclusion criteria. Random effects meta-analyses were performed for 22 predictors, three for suicidal ideation, eleven for suicide attempts and eight for suicide death. Heterogeneity and publication bias were inspected through I2 tests and Egger's tests respectively. Meta-analysis results showed that severity of hopelessness predicted suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. History of suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, severe depression, and psychotic symptoms predicted subsequent suicide attempts and suicide death. Time to full remission and sleep disturbances were also found as relevant predictors of future suicide behaviours. This review specifies which predictors of suicidality within the clinical features of depression will help clinicians and policy makers to better prevent suicide risk in patients with depressive disorders. Further longitudinal studies are needed to reliably assess the predictive ability of our results and to analyse other possible clinical predictors to prevent suicidality, especially with regard to suicidal ideation.

Abstract
Diabetic encephalopathy (DE) is a complication of diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes (T2D), characterized by damage in the central nervous system and cognitive impairment, which has gained global attention. Despite the extensive research aimed at enhancing our understanding of DE, the underlying mechanism of occurrence and development of DE has not been established. Mounting evidence has demonstrated a close correlation between DE and various factors, such as Alzheimer's disease-like pathological changes, insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Of interest, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) is a transcription factor with antioxidant properties that is crucial in maintaining redox homeostasis and regulating inflammatory responses. The activation and regulatory mechanisms of NRF2 are a relatively complex process. NRF2 is involved in the regulation of multiple metabolic pathways and confers neuroprotective functions. Multiple studies have provided evidence demonstrating the significant involvement of NRF2 as a critical transcription factor in the progression of DE. Additionally, various molecules capable of activating NRF2 expression have shown potential in ameliorating DE. Therefore, it is intriguing to consider NRF2 as a potential target for the treatment of DE. In this review, we aim to shed light on the role and the possible underlying mechanism of NRF2 in DE. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the current research landscape and address the challenges associated with using NRF2 activators as potential treatment options for DE.

Abstract
Introduction and importance Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) was first described by Kepes et al. in 1979. Fewer than 200 cases have been reported in the literature. It generally involves the temporoparietal lobe. PXA has a favorable prognosis. The most reported clinical manifestation is epileptic seizures. Revealing psychiatric symptoms have an incidence varying from 50 to 78%. The most common symptoms encountered are anxiety disorders, depression, schizophrenia-like psychosis, cognitive dysfunction or even anorexia nervosa. Case presentation Here, the authors report a new case of non-anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma revealed by a drug-resistant schizophrenia-like psychosis in a 26-year-old male patient known with epileptic seizures in whom these two pathologies were intertwined and had been evolving for 5 years. The postoperative course was uneventful, and positive symptoms of schizophrenia were relatively stabilized at discharge. Clinical discussion Given the superficial hemispheric location of PXA, the most common clinical presentation is seizures. Psychiatric symptoms revealing brain tumors have an incidence varying from 50 to 78%. Most of these symptoms concern frontal and limbal tumors. In their case, the tumor was located in the right temporal lobe. Surgery was performed and postoperative course was uneventful even though there are conflicting reports regarding the importance of the surgical excision quality. Conclusion PXA remains a rare and benign primary CNS tumor. Psychiatric disorders represent a rare revealing mode of this pathology, which must lead to neuroimaging in any patient carrying this type of symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sub-optimal care of people living with dementia has serious consequences for older populations. The 2021 Australian Royal Commission noted that a large proportion of older adults in aged care live with dementia, yet there are limitations in the knowledge and understanding of staff who care for them. In the pursuit of educating pharmacists, physicians, allied health care professionals, researchers, academics, people living with dementia and their carers, and the public, who are facing the challenges of dementia management, the 'Best Practice in Dementia Health Care' conference was held on November 10, 2022 at Western Health (Sunshine Hospital, Melbourne, Australia). METHODS Sixteen experts presented on the current practice and challenges associated with delivering best practice dementia health care to older Australians, often highlighting how medication-related challenges impacted on their area of practice. RESULTS Presenters highlighted the importance of individualised medication management plans, considerations of culture and Indigenous communities, the role of technology, and the impact of exercise and the physical environment on care of people living with dementia. Key clinical practice messages from each expert presenter fit into four main topics: 'navigating complexities of medication management'; 'enhancing wellbeing'; 'supportive settings and environments'; and 'programs and services improving care'. CONCLUSIONS Pharmacists are crucial members of allied health care teams. They have the necessary medication and comorbidity expertise to review medication regimens, liaise with all health care providers, and provide holistic, pharmacological and non-pharmacological patient education. Towards providing best practice dementia health care, pharmacists can contribute in several ways, such as providing health practitioner education to increase understanding about medications and how they can impact on allied health practice, to ensure that medications are prescribed appropriately and safely. Further, pharmacists can make available resources to ensure people living with dementia receive culturally safe and appropriate care, while advocating for greater understanding of the history and experiences of people living with dementia to ensure care aligns with their day-to-day routines. Finally, pharmacists can provide peer-support to other health care professionals and care staff to ensure optimal management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The information and insights shared at the conference can serve as a valuable resource for pharmacists and other health care professionals and researchers working to improve the lives of those living with dementia.

Abstract
Whether proinflammatory cytokine dysregulation and cognitive dysfunction are associated with suicidal symptoms in adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) remains uncertain. We assessed the cognitive function and proinflammatory cytokine levels of 43 and 51 patients aged 15-29 years with MDD and severe and mild suicidal symptoms, respectively, as well as those of 85 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Specifically, we measured serum levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-2, and interleukin-6 and assessed cognitive function by using working memory and go/no-go tasks. The severity of the patients' suicidal symptoms was based on Item 10 of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale; scores of ≤ 2 and ≥ 4 indicated mild and severe symptoms, respectively. The patients with MDD and severe suicidal symptoms had higher levels of C-reactive protein (p = .019) and TNF-α (p = .002) than did the patients with mild symptoms or the healthy controls. The number of errors committed on the go/no-go by patients with MDD and severe suicidal symptoms (p = .001) was significantly higher than those by patients with MDD and mild symptoms or by controls. After adjusting for nonsuicidal depressive symptoms, we observed suicidal symptoms to be positively associated with TNF-α levels (p = .050) and errors on the go/no-go task (p = .021). Compared with mild suicidal symptoms, severe symptoms are associated with greater serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines and inferior cognitive function in adolescents and young adults with MDD.

Abstract
Due to the addictive qualities of tobacco products and the compulsive craving and dependence associated with their use, nicotine dependence continues to be a serious public health concern on a global scale. Despite awareness of the associated health risks, nicotine addiction contributes to numerous acute and chronic medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders and cancer. The nocturnal secretion of pineal melatonin, known as the 'hormone of darkness', influences circadian rhythms and is implicated in addiction‑related behaviors. Melatonin receptors are found throughout the brain, influencing dopaminergic neurotransmission and potentially attenuating nicotine‑seeking behavior. Additionally, the antioxidant properties of melatonin may mitigate oxidative stress from chronic nicotine exposure, reducing cellular damage and lowering the risk of nicotine‑related health issues. In addition to its effects on circadian rhythmicity, melatonin acting via specific neural receptors influences sleep and mood, and provides neuroprotection. Disruptions in melatonin signaling may contribute to sleep disturbances and mood disorders, highlighting the potential therapeutic role of melatonin in addiction and psychiatric conditions. Melatonin may influence neurotransmitter systems involved in addiction, such as the dopaminergic, glutamatergic, serotonergic and endogenous opioid systems. Preclinical studies suggest the potential of melatonin in modulating reward processing, attenuating drug‑induced hyperactivity and reducing opioid withdrawal symptoms. Chronotherapeutic approaches targeting circadian rhythms and melatonin signaling show promise in smoking cessation interventions. Melatonin supplementation during periods of heightened nicotine cravings may alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce the reinforcing effects of nicotine. Further research is required however, to examine the molecular mechanisms underlying the melatonin‑nicotine association and the optimization of therapeutic interventions. Challenges include variability in individual responses to melatonin, optimal dosing regimens and identifying biomarkers of treatment response. Understanding these complexities could lead to personalized treatment strategies and improve smoking cessation outcomes.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment represents one of the core features of schizophrenia, involves both neurocognition and social cognition domains, and has a significant negative impact on real-world functioning. The present review provides a framework for the conceptualization and characterization of "primary" and "secondary" cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. In this conceptualization, primary cognitive impairment can be defined as a consequence of the neurobiological alterations that underlie psychopathological manifestations of the disorder, while secondary cognitive impairment can be defined as the results of a source issue that has a negative impact on cognitive performance. Sources of secondary cognitive impairment are frequent in people with schizophrenia and include several different factors, such as positive and negative symptoms, depressive symptoms, autistic symptoms, pharmacotherapy, substance abuse, metabolic syndrome, social deprivation, and sleep disorders. It can be hypothesized that secondary cognitive impairment may be improved by effectively resolving the source issue, while primary cognitive impairment may benefit from dedicated treatment. Further research is required to confirm this hypothesis, to better characterize the distinction between primary and secondary cognitive impairment in a clinical and in a neurobiological perspective, and to evaluate the impact of systematically assessing and treating secondary cognitive impairment.

Abstract
The perioperative period encompasses all phases of patient care from the decision to perform surgery until full recovery. Ferroptosis, a newly identified type of regulated cell death, influences a wide array of diseases, including those affecting the prognosis and regression of surgical patients, such as ischemia-reperfusion injury and perioperative cognitive dysfunction. This review systematically examines perioperative factors impacting ferroptosis such as surgical trauma-induced stress, tissue hypoxia, anesthetics, hypothermia, and blood transfusion. By analyzing their intrinsic relationships, we aim to improve intraoperative management, enhance perioperative safety, prevent complications, and support high-quality postoperative recovery, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Abstract
Vital organ injury is one of the leading causes of global mortality and socio-economic burdens. Current treatments have limited efficacy, and new strategies are needed. Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is a highly selective α2-adrenergic receptor that protects multiple organs by reducing inflammation and preventing cell death. However, its exact mechanism is not yet fully understood. Understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of its protective effects is crucial as it could provide a basis for designing highly targeted and more effective drugs. Ferroptosis is the primary mode of cell death during organ injury, and recent studies have shown that DEX can protect vital organs from this process. This review provides a detailed analysis of preclinical in vitro and in vivo studies and gains a better understanding of how DEX protects against vital organ injuries by inhibiting ferroptosis. Our findings suggest that DEX can potentially protect vital organs mainly by regulating iron metabolism and the antioxidant defense system. This is the first review that summarizes all evidence of ferroptosis's role in DEX's protective effects against vital organ injuries. Our work aims to provide new insights into organ therapy with DEX and accelerate its translation from the laboratory to clinical settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Validations of brief delirium tools have not included analysis of psychiatric disorders comorbidities or control groups. We validated the Delirium Diagnostic Tool-Provisional (DDT-Pro) in 422 geriatric inpatients with high incidence of depression and/or dementia. METHODS Cross-sectional study using two delirium reference standards, DSM-5-TR and Delirium Rating Scale-Revised-98 (DRS-R98). We assessed concurrent and construct DDT-Pro validity too. RESULTS There were 117 (27.7%) delirium cases using DDT-Pro, 104 (24.6%) per DSM-5-TR and 93 (22.0%) per DRS-R98; 133 patients (31.5%) had depression and 105 (24.9%) dementia, some comorbid with delirium. DDT-Pro accuracy (AUC under ROC curve) ranges were 88.3-95.9% vs DSM-5-TR and 92.7-95.0% vs DRS-R98 for whole sample and four diagnostic groups, without statistical differences. DDT-Pro ≤6 had the most balanced sensitivity-specificity for delirium diagnosis against both DSM-5-TR and DRS-R98 with similar specificity but higher sensitivity for DRS-R98 than DSM-5-TR delirium, with the highest values in patients with depression and dementia (≥92% sensitivity, ≥81% specificity). Positive and negative likelihood ratios support diagnostic strength. Concurrent validity was high reflected by significant correlations (p < 0.001) of DDT-Pro total and item scores with DRS-R98 and Delirium Frontal Index scores, highest in groups with comorbid depression and/or dementia. The DDT-Pro represented a single construct for delirium demonstrated by one factor with high item loadings and high internal consistency reliability of its items. CONCLUSIONS The DDT-Pro demonstrated strong performance metrics in general hospital elderly inpatients with preexisting depression and/or dementia, which is unique among brief delirium tools. Its optimized cutoff score was the same as in other populations.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by repetitive behaviors and altered communication abilities. Exercise is a low-cost intervention that could improve cognitive function and improve brain plasticity mechanisms. Here, the valproic acid (VPA) model was utilized to induce ASD-like phenotypes in rodents. Animals were exercised on a treadmill and performance was evaluated on a cognitive flexibility task. Biomarkers related to exercise and plasticity regulation were quantified from the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and skeletal muscle. Exercised VPA animals had higher levels of hippocampal BDNF compared to sedentary VPA animals and upregulated antioxidant enzyme expression in skeletal muscle. Cognitive improvements were demonstrated in both sexes, but in different domains of cognitive flexibility. This research demonstrates the benefits of exercise and provides evidence that molecular responses to exercise occur in both the central nervous system and in the periphery. These results suggest that improving regulation of BDNF via exercise, even at low intensity, could provide better synaptic regulation and cognitive benefits for individuals with ASD.

Abstract
Importance Atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with psychosocial symptoms, resulting in significant mental health burden and reduced quality of life. Objective To understand mental health support received by patients from their primary eczema provider. Design We administered a cross-sectional survey (N = 954) to US caregivers and adult patients with AD. Setting The National Eczema Association (United States) conducted an online survey in October 2022 among self-selected patients and caregivers. Outcome Patients and caregivers of AD patients reported on mental health conversations and types of mental health support received by their/their child's provider. Results Many patients did not discuss (41.9%) or were not asked (50.5%) about their mental health by their eczema provider, and 64% reported not receiving a mental health referral. Patients were more likely to receive mental health support if they were male (2.00 [1.08-3.69]), low or middle education level (4.89 [2.10-11.36], 2.71 [1.36-5.40]), or had purchased insurance policies (4.43 [1.79-10.98]). Providers were most likely to refer patients to counseling services (22.5%), followed by alternative mental health therapy (14.9%), cognitive behavioural therapy (13.3%) and peer/social support groups (12.2%). Conclusion Despite the strong association between AD and mental health conditions, there is a significant proportion of patients that report not receiving mental health support from their/their child's primary eczema provider. Screening with validated measures may improve the identification of patients requiring additional support. Future research should evaluate the efficacy of mental health resources and barriers to accessing and referring patients for mental health care.

Abstract
Background Using machine learning methods based on neurocognitive deficits and neuroimmune biomarkers, two distinct classes were discovered within schizophrenia patient samples. Increased frequency of psychomotor retardation, formal thought disorders, mannerisms, psychosis, hostility, excitation, and negative symptoms defined the first subgroup, major neurocognitive psychosis (MNP). Cognitive deficits in executive functions and memory and diverse neuroimmune aberrations were other MNP features. Simple neurocognitive psychosis (SNP) was the less severe phenotype. Aims The study comprised a sample of 40 healthy controls and 90 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, divided into MNP and SNP based on previously determined criteria. Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) was performed using neurocognitive test results and measurements of serum M1 macrophage and T helper-17 cytokines as discriminatory/modelling variables. The model-to-model distances between controls and MNP + SNP and between MNP and SNP were computed, and the top discriminatory variables were established. Results A notable SIMCA distance of 146.1682 was observed between MNP + SNP and the control group. The top-3 discriminatory variables were lowered motor speed, an activated T helper-17 axis, and lowered working memory. This study successfully differentiated MNP from SNP yielding a SIMCA distance of 19.3. M1 macrophage activation, lowered verbal fluency, and executive functions were the prominent features of MNP versus SNP. Discussion Based on neurocognitive assessments and the immune-linked neurotoxic M1 and T helper-17 profiles, we found that MNP and SNP are qualitatively distinct classes. Future biomarker research should focus on examining biomarkers specifically in the MNP and SNP subgroups, rather than in the schizophrenia group.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE SUBJECT Treatment groups in Mental Health Service is cost-effective, increases patients´ self-understanding and stimulate change Research shows that people with mental illness have different barriers to attend group sessions which often originates from a lack of trust in other people, but it is known that the possibility to build gradual trust among the participants encourages attendance. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE This study is based on the experience from outpatients and illuminates how discovery groups from the Tidal Model can be used as introductory sessions to build gradual trust among people with mental illness before engaging in a person-centred group intervention. The study fills a research gap in methods to create a safe and trusting environment in treatment groups for people with mental illness working with recovery-oriented person-centred interventions. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This study emphasizes the importance of meeting concerns about social interactions in persons with mental illness when joining treatment groups. It presents a recovery-oriented method which meets this requirement and is easy to implement in practice. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Recovery-oriented interventions delivered individually or in groups are more and more common within mental health nursing. However, persons with mental illness may be cautious about engaging in groups. Therefore, it is important to provide a trusting basis in the group to allow for the best opportunities to promote engagement, attendance and impact of treatment. AIM The aim was to explore how discovery group sessions were experienced as introductory sessions from the perspectives of participants and facilitators before engaging in a person-centred group intervention. METHOD A qualitative interview study was conducted, involving four group facilitators and 16 participants with mental illness from five completed groups. Data were analysed with Ricoeur's theory of interpretation. RESULTS The findings showed that the two discovery group sessions were experienced as useful and meaningful to all and created a safe atmosphere and a trusted relationship among group participants and facilitators. DISCUSSION Feeling safe and sharing experiences and emotions contribute to the relational climate in a group. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE Addressing concerns about social interactions in persons with mental illness is important in group treatment. This study proved that engaging patients in designing or adapting interventions for mental health services is important to improve quality.

Abstract
Catheter based renal denervation has recently been FDA approved for the treatment of hypertension. Traditionally, the anti-hypertensive effects of renal denervation have been attributed to the ablation of the efferent sympathetic renal nerves. In recent years the role of the afferent sensory renal nerves in the regulation of blood pressure has received increased attention. In addition, afferent renal denervation is associated with reductions in sympathetic nervous system activity. This suggests that reductions in sympathetic drive to organs other than the kidney may contribute to the non-renal beneficial effects observed in clinical trials of catheter based renal denervation. In this review we will provide an overview of the role of the afferent renal nerves in the regulation of renal function and the development of pathophysiologies, both renal and non-renal. We will also describe the central projections of the afferent renal nerves, to give context to the responses seen following their ablation and activation. Finally, we will discuss the emerging role of the kidney as an interoceptive organ. We will describe the potential role of the kidney in the regulation of interoceptive sensitivity and in this context, speculate on the possible pathological consequences of altered renal function.

Abstract
Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (aADHD) represents a heterogeneous entity incorporating different subgroups in terms of symptomatology, course, and neurocognition. Although neurocognitive dysfunction is generally associated with aADHD, its severity, association with self-reported symptoms, and differences between subtypes remain unclear. We investigated 61 outpatients (65.6% male, mean age 31.5 ± 9.5) diagnosed using DSM-5 criteria together with age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) (n = 58, 63.8% male, mean age 32.3 ± 9.6). Neurocognitive alterations were assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) and compared between groups using the generalized linear model (GLM) method. Multivariate effects were tested by principal component analysis combined with multivariate pattern analysis. Self-reported symptom severity was tested for correlations with neurocognitive performance. GLM analyses revealed nominally significant differences between the aADHD and HC groups in several domains, however, only the Rapid Visual Information Processing measures survived correction, indicating impaired sustained attention and response inhibition in the aADHD group. Comparison of the predominantly inattentive and the hyperactive-impulsive/combined subtypes yielded nominally significant differences with higher levels of dysfunction in the inattentive group. In the stepwise discriminant analysis aADHD and HC groups were best separated with 2 factors representing sustained attention and reaction time. We found only weak correlations between symptom severity and CANTAB factors. aADHD patients are neuropsychologically heterogeneous and subtypes show different neurocognitive profiles. Differences between the aADHD and HC groups were driven primarily by the inattentive subtype. Sustained attention and its factor derivative showed the most significant alterations in aADHD patients.

Abstract
Dioxin-like compounds, recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as among the most enduring toxic chemical substances in the environment, are linked to various occupational activities and industrial accidents worldwide. The aim of this study was to examine and present research publications on dioxins, pinpoint current research trends, identify research gaps, and highlight potential avenues for future exploration in the field. The study period for relevant research articles ranged from 1923 to December 31, 2022, and these articles were sourced from the Scopus database. The analysis involved the identification of key contributors to the field and the visualization of topics, themes, and international collaboration. VOSviewer software (version 1.6.20) was used for visualization analysis. A total of 11,620 publications on dioxins were documented in the Scopus database. The predominant category of these documents comprised 9780 original articles, which represents 84.17% of the total publications. The United States lead in the number of publications, with 3992 (34.35%), followed by Japan, with 1429 (12.3%), China, with 1005 (8.65%), and Germany, with 974 (8.38%). Before 2002, scholarly attention in this field focused primarily on the health effects, environmental fate, and mechanism of toxicity of tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). However, a noticeable change in research focus has been observed since 2002, highlighting the emergence of a topic related to the health effects and environmental fate of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PFDFs). This study is the first to conduct a comprehensive quantitative bibliometric analysis of dioxins over time. These findings indicate a significant increase in the overall growth of the dioxin literature over the past 30 years. These findings may prove crucial in guiding and organizing subsequent investigations related to dioxins.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the risk of developing a new mental disorder diagnosis within 2 years of lower extremity fracture. METHODS DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING National insurance claims database. PATIENT SELECTION CRITERIA Patients between 18 and 65 years with lower extremity, pelvis, and acetabular fractures without prior mental disorders as defined using International Classification of Diseases, 9th and 10th revision diagnosis codes were included. Mental disorders evaluated included alcohol use disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, drug use disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and suicide attempt. OUTCOME MEASURES AND COMPARISONS The individual lower extremity fracture cohorts were matched 1:4 with nonfracture controls. The specific groups of interest were pelvis fractures, acetabulum fractures, proximal femur fractures, femoral shaft fractures, distal femur fractures, patella fractures, tibia plateau fractures, tibia shaft fractures, ankle fractures, pilon fractures, calcaneus fractures, and Lisfranc fractures. Rates of mental disorders after primary lower extremity fractures within 2 years were compared using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS Overall, the 263,988 patient-fracture group was 57.2% female with an average age of 46.6 years. Compared with controls with no fracture, patients who sustained pelvis, acetabulum, proximal femur, femoral shaft, distal femur, patella, tibia plateau, tibia shaft, pilon, calcaneus, or Lisfranc fracture had a statistically significantly increased risk of being diagnosed with a queried mental disorder within 2 years of fracture. When comparing all fracture patients by location, those suffering from fractures proximal to the knee joint, including pelvis fractures [OR: 1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.39-1.64] and proximal femur fractures [odds ratio (OR): 1.36, 95% CI: 1.26-1.47], demonstrated greater risk of developing any of the queried mental disorders compared with fractures distal to the knee, including ankle fractures (OR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.95-1.03) and pilon fractures (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 0.81-1.36). When comparing specific fracture patients with patients without fracture by mental disorder, patients demonstrated an increased risk of suicide attempt following fracture of the pelvis, acetabulum, femoral shaft, distal femur, and calcaneus, as well as patients sustaining a Lisfranc fracture. CONCLUSIONS There is an increased risk of being diagnosed with a new mental disorder following lower extremity trauma in patients without prior mental disorder diagnosis compared with matched individuals without a lower extremity fracture. Among the fractures studied, those that were more proximal, such as pelvis and proximal femur fractures, carried greater risk compared with more distal fracture sites, including ankle and pilon fractures. Patients who experienced certain lower extremity fractures had a significantly higher rate of suicide attempt compared with patients without fracture. Physicians should consider increased mental health screening and potential referral for mental health evaluation for patients following lower extremity trauma. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Prognostic Level III. Abstract
Cognitive impairments affect millions of people worldwide with an increasing prevalence. Research on their etiology and treatment is developing, nevertheless significant gaps remain. Trientine (TETA), as a copper chelator, has been shown to have beneficial effects in different human chronic diseases such as diabetic cardiomyopathy and neuropathy. Here, we examined the impact of TETA on AlCl3-induced neurocognitive dysfunctions and molecular changes in the hippocampus of rats.Thirty-six male Wistar rats (weighing 200-250 g) were randomly divided into four groups including control, TETA (100 mg/kg/day), AlCl3 (100 mg/kg/day), and AlCl3 (100 mg/kg/day)+TETA (100 mg/kg/day), and received chemicals by gavage for 30 days. At the end of the treatment, the open field maze, elevated plus maze, novel object recognition memory test, and shuttle box test were done. Then after, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glycogen synthase kinase-3 β (GSK-3β), acetylcholinesterase activity, oxidative stress markers, and inflammatory mediators were measured in the hippocampus.AlCl3 increased anxiety-like behaviors and impaired recognition and short-term memory. TETA was able to improve AlCl3-induced anxiety-like behaviors and short-term memory dysfunction. In the AlCl3-treated group, there was a significant increase in GSK-3β, oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic markers, and decreased BDNF in the hippocampus. Co-administration of TETA was able to decrease lipid peroxidation, inflammation, GSK-3β, and acetylcholinesterase activity, and increase BDNF in the hippocampus compared with AlCl3-treated rats.It can be concluded that TETA was able to improve neurobehavioral and neurocognitive functions by alleviating oxidative stress, inflammation, and pro-apoptotic pathways leading to the normalization of BDNF and GSK-3β.

Abstract
AIMS One of the most widely used evidence-based anti-bullying programs, KiVa, originates from Finland and aims to change students' peer context, activate teachers, and inform parents with two main components (universal preventive actions and indicated actions when bullying occurs), complemented by monitoring. Because research documented somewhat varied KiVa outcomes in different countries and because there is a lack of research focusing solely on the effectiveness of the universal and indicated actions, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of KiVa main components when implemented in a new country. This two-arm parallel cluster randomized control trial (RCT) evaluated the effectiveness of the KiVa anti-bullying program in elementary schools in the Czech Republic. It examined the effects of the universal and indicated actions on self-reported bullying and victimization as primary outcomes and well-being as a secondary outcome, while keeping monitoring constant across the intervention and control schools. The study also examined the role of implementation fidelity on the proposed outcomes. METHODS Schools were allocated via stratified randomization into a KiVa intervention group (12 schools, 35 classes, N = 407 students) or a wait-list control group (12 schools, 32 classes, N = 400 students). The study employed data from baseline and post-measurement waves, which were 10 months apart. RESULTS The data were analyzed using linear mixed effects models, which showed no significant intervention or fidelity effects for bullying, victimization, and well-being. However, promising trends (at α < .10) were revealed, such as lower levels of bullying observed in the intervention group and in schools with high implementation fidelity. Additional analysis using Bayes factors supported these promising trends and provided moderate support for lower levels of victimization in the intervention group compared to the control schools. CONCLUSIONS Evaluation of effectiveness of anti-bullying programs could benefit from a more targeted fidelity assessment at the classroom or individual level and from distinguishing between the effects of the main components of the programs and the effects of monitoring. The promising yet non-significant intervention and fidelity effects suggest that schools may require enhanced support and longer implementation time frames than a single school year, especially when implementation faces structural obstacles, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by increased T helper (Th)1 polarization, T cell activation (e.g., CD71+ and CD40L+), and cannabinoid receptor type 2 bearing CD20+ B cells; and lower T regulatory (Treg) numbers. AIMS To delineate the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and recurrence of illness (ROI) on activated T and CB2-bearing B populations, and Tregs, including FoxP3 + CD152+, FoxP3 + GARP+, and FoxP3 + CB1+ cells. METHODS We measured ROI, ACEs, the number of activated T cells, Tregs, and CD20 + CB2+ B cells, in 30 MDD patients and 20 healthy controls. RESULTS A larger part of the variance in the depression phenome (40.8 %) was explained by increased CD20 + CB2+ and activated T cells, and lowered Tregs. ROI and lifetime suicidal behaviors were significantly and positively associated with CD20 + CB2+, CD3 + CD71+, CD3 + CD40L+, CD4 + CD71+, CD4 + CD40L+, and CD4HLADR+ numbers. ROI was significantly correlated with CD8 + CD40L+ numbers. The sum of ACEs was significantly associated with CD20 + CB2+, CD3 + CD40L+, CD4 + 40 L+ numbers, T cell activation (positively) and Treg (inversely) indices. One replicable latent vector could be extracted from activated T cells, lifetime and current suicidal behaviors, number of depressive episodes, and severity of depression, and 48.8 % of its variance was explained by ACEs. CONCLUSIONS ACE-induced activation of T effector and cytotoxic cells and B cells with autoimmune potential, coupled with lowered Treg numbers are a key component of depression. The findings indicate that increasing ROI, the phenome of depression and suicidal behaviors, are caused by autoimmune processes, which are the consequence of ACEs and increasing sensitization of immune responses.

Abstract
Research investigating the neural processes related to music perception and production constitutes a well-established field within the cognitive neurosciences. While most neuroimaging tools have limitations in studying the complexity of musical experiences, functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) represents a promising, relatively new tool for studying music processes in both laboratory and ecological settings, which is also suitable for both typical and pathological populations across development. Here we systematically review fNIRS studies on music cognition, highlighting prospects and potentialities. We also include an overview of fNIRS basic theory, together with a brief comparison to characteristics of other neuroimaging tools. Fifty-nine studies meeting inclusion criteria (i.e., using fNIRS with music as the primary stimulus) are presented across five thematic sections. Critical discussion of methodology leads us to propose guidelines of good practices aiming for robust signal analyses and reproducibility. A continuously updated world map is proposed, including basic information from studies meeting the inclusion criteria. It provides an organized, accessible, and updatable reference database, which could serve as a catalyst for future collaborations within the community. In conclusion, fNIRS shows potential for investigating cognitive processes in music, particularly in ecological contexts and with special populations, aligning with current research priorities in music cognition.

Abstract
Precisely how the anatomical structure of the brain gives rise to a repertoire of complex functions remains incompletely understood. A promising manifestation of this mapping from structure to function is the dependency of the functional activity of a brain region on the underlying white matter architecture. Here, we review the literature examining the macroscale coupling between structural and functional connectivity, and we establish how this structure-function coupling (SFC) can provide more information about the underlying workings of the brain than either feature alone. We begin by defining SFC and describing the computational methods used to quantify it. We then review empirical studies that examine the heterogeneous expression of SFC across different brain regions, among individuals, in the context of the cognitive task being performed, and over time, as well as its role in fostering flexible cognition. Last, we investigate how the coupling between structure and function is affected in neurological and psychiatric conditions, and we report how aberrant SFC is associated with disease duration and disease-specific cognitive impairment. By elucidating how the dynamic relationship between the structure and function of the brain is altered in the presence of neurological and psychiatric conditions, we aim to not only further our understanding of their aetiology but also establish SFC as a new and sensitive marker of disease symptomatology and cognitive performance. Overall, this Review collates the current knowledge regarding the regional interdependency between the macroscale structure and function of the human brain in both neurotypical and neuroatypical individuals.

METHODS The forced swim test (FST) and spontaneous locomotor activity test were carried out in adult male naïve mice. Before the behavioral testing, animals received DPCPX (a selective adenosine A1 receptor antagonist, 1 mg/kg) or istradefylline (a selective adenosine A2A receptor antagonist, 0.5 mg/kg) in combination with L-701,324 (a potent NMDA receptor antagonist, 1 mg/kg), D-cycloserine (a partial agonist at the glycine recognition site of NMDA receptor, 2.5 mg/kg), CGP 37849 (a competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, 0.3 mg/kg) or MK-801 (a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, 0.05 mg/kg). Additionally, serum BDNF level and the mRNA level of the Adora1, Comt, and Slc6a15 genes in the murine prefrontal cortex were determined. RESULTS The obtained results showed that DPCPX and istradefylline administered jointly with NMDA receptor ligands (except for DPCPX + D-cycloserine combination) produced an antidepressant effect in the FST in mice without enhancement in spontaneous motility of animals. An elevation in BDNF concentration was noted in the D-cycloserine-treated group. Adora1 expression increased with L-701,324, DPCPX + D-cycloserine, and DPCPX + CGP 37849, while D-cycloserine, CGP 37849, and MK-801 led to a decrease. Comt mRNA levels dropped with DPCPX + L-701,324, istradefylline + L-701,324/CGP 37849 but increased with D-cycloserine, MK-801, CGP 37849 and DPCPX + MK-801/ CGP 37849. Slc6a15 levels were reduced by D-cycloserine, DPCPX + L-701,324 but rose with DPCPX + CGP 37849/MK-801 and istradefylline + D-cycloserine/MK-801/CGP 37849. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that selective antagonists of adenosine receptors may enhance the antidepressant efficacy of NMDA receptor ligands highlighting a potential synergistic interaction between the adenosinergic and glutamatergic systems. Wherein, A2A receptor antagonists are seen as more promising candidates in this context. Given the intricate nature of changes in BDNF levels and the expression of Adora1, Comt, and Slc6a15 seen after drug combinations exerting antidepressant properties, further research and integrative approaches are crucial understand better the mechanisms underlying their antidepressant action.

Abstract
This article aims to: (1) describe the evolution of first episode of psychosis (FEP) approaches; (2) define a model of multidisciplinary care; (3) identify challenges and limitations; (4) discuss the unique challenges for those first experiencing psychosis; (5) identify strategies to expand early psychosis interventions. The authors take the medical standpoint and use the differential diagnosis and initial medical work-up as a context for assessment. The remainder of the article will be focused on treatment of FEP in those with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

Abstract
Exposure to valproic acid (VPA), a common anti-seizure medication, in utero is a risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). People with ASD often display changes in the cerebellum, including volume changes, altered circuitry, and changes in Purkinje cell populations. ASD is also characterized by changes in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), where excitatory/inhibitory balance is often altered. This study exposed rats to a high dose of VPA during gestation and assessed cognition and anxiety-like behaviors during young adulthood using a set-shifting task and the elevated plus maze. Inhibitory parvalbumin-expressing (PV +) neuron counts were assessed in the mPFC and cerebellar lobules VI and VII (Purkinje cell layers), which are known to modulate cognition. VPA males had increased PV + counts in crus I and II of lobule VII. VPA males also had decreased parvalbumin-expressing neuron counts in the mPFC. It was also found that VPA-exposed rats, regardless of sex, had increased parvalbumin-expressing Purkinje cell counts in lobule VI. In males, this was associated with impaired intra-dimensional shifting on a set-shifting task. Purkinje cell over proliferation may be contributing to the previously observed increase in volume of Lobule VI. These findings suggest that altered inhibitory signaling in cerebellar-frontal circuits may contribute to the cognitive deficits that occur within ASD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early symptomatic improvement may predict treatment response in bipolar I disorder. Cariprazine has demonstrated early treatment effects in bipolar I depression and mania studies; therefore, we assessed whether early improvement with cariprazine predicts eventual treatment response. METHODS Post hoc analyses used pooled data from randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled bipolar I depression (NCT02670538, NCT02670551) and mania (NCT00488618, NCT01058096, NCT01058668) trials. In depression studies (cariprazine 1.5 mg/d, 3 mg/d, or placebo), early improvement in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) total scores (≥25 % improvement at day 15) and subsequent depressive/anxiety symptom response status (≥50 % improvement at week 6) were assessed. In mania studies (cariprazine 3-12 mg/d or placebo), early improvement in Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) total scores (≥25 % improvement at day 7) and manic symptom response status (≥50 % improvement at week 3) were assessed. RESULTS Patients with bipolar I depression and early MADRS improvement were approximately 4- to 6-times as likely to achieve MADRS or HAM-A response than those without early improvement; patients with early HAM-A improvement were approximately 3- to 4-times as likely to achieve MADRS or HAM-A response. A subset of patients without early improvement with cariprazine 1.5 mg/d (20 %-31 %) subsequently responded following up-titration. Patients with mania and early YMRS improvement were approximately 5 times more likely to have manic symptom response than those without early improvement. LIMITATIONS Post hoc analysis; relatively short study durations; flexible-dosing (mania studies). CONCLUSIONS Early symptom improvement with cariprazine may inform therapeutic decisions for patients with bipolar I disorder.

Abstract
Schizotypy involves schizophrenia-like traits and symptoms, with the Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales (WSS) being frequently used in previous research. There is some evidence that schizophrenia-spectrum symptom levels, including when using the WSS, might vary both by gender and by race and ethnicity. However, previous research has rarely examined to what extent the WSS show gender and racial bias. Further, this has not been previously examined for the Cognitive Slippage Scale, a measure of disorganized schizotypy. In this study, we examined biases for a subset of items from the WSS in a large sample of undergraduate students (n = 21,829). Using item response theory to test for levels of differential item functioning (DIF), we found some evidence of problematic DIF for all scales, including for negative, positive, and disorganized schizotypy scales. There was evidence of problematic DIF especially by gender and for Black and Multiracial participants. Overall, the current results suggest that gender and/or racial bias on these scales should be an important consideration in using these scales and our results could have implications for assessment of schizophrenia-spectrum symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic markedly influenced mental health care practices, notably regarding electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This was due to the redistribution of anesthetic agents used during ECT such as propofol, for intensive care units. Because in our center propofol was switched to etomidate to avoid ECT activity discontinuation, we undertook this study in order to compare Propofol and Etomidate regarding electroencephalographic seizure duration and stimulus intensity. METHODS We performed a retrospective and comparative study, each patient being its own control. We included patients with at least two courses of ECT on propofol and two others with etomidate over the period from September 2019 to April 2021, regardless of the psychiatric diagnosis. Our data collection process notably targeted stimulus intensity, seizure duration recorded using electroencephalography, and medication used for anesthetic induction. RESULTS Overall, we included 18 patients with a male: female ratio of 1:2.6 and a mean (and standard deviation) age of 62.7±13.4 years. We found that the mean intensity of stimulation was significantly lower with etomidate when compared to propofol (425.3±250.0 vs. 658.9±280.2 mC, P=0.001). The mean duration of electroencephalographic seizure was significantly higher with etomidate in comparison to propofol (53.5±16.6 vs. 35.0±12.2seconds, P<0.001). CONCLUSION By using each patient as its own control, our study found that etomidate, while compared to propofol, was related to a lower level of stimulatory intensity and a longer electroencephalographic seizure duration.

Abstract
Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe mental health condition involving gene-environment interactions, with obstetric complications (OCs) conferring an elevated risk for the disease. Current research suggests that OCs may exacerbate SZ symptoms. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate differences in psychopathology between individuals with and without exposure to OCs in relation to SZ and related disorders. We systematically searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and SCOPUS to identify eligible studies. A total of 4,091 records were retrieved through systematic and citation searches. 14 studies were included in the review, and 12 met the criteria for meta-analysis, involving 2,992 patients. The analysis revealed that SZ patients who had been exposed to OCs exhibited significantly higher levels of positive symptoms (SMD=0.10, 95%CI=0.01,0.20; p=0.03), general psychopathology (SMD=0.37, 95%CI=0.22,0.52; p<0.001), total clinical symptomatology (SMD=0.44, 95%CI=0.24,0.64; p<0.001) and depressive symptoms (SMD=0.47, 95%CI=0.09,0.84; p=0.01). No significant differences were found in negative symptomatology and functioning. Our results suggest that OCs are not only associated with an increased risk of developing psychosis but with more severe symptomatology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a strong need to determine pandemic and postpandemic challenges and effects at the individual, family, community, and societal levels. Post-COVID-19 health and psychosocial effects have long-lasting impacts on the physical and mental health and quality of life of a large proportion of survivors, especially survivors of severe and critical COVID-19, extending beyond the end of the pandemic. While research has mostly focused on the negative short- and long-term effects of COVID-19, few studies have examined the positive effects of the pandemic, such as posttraumatic growth. It is essential to study both negative and positive long-term post-COVID-19 effects and to acknowledge the role of the resources available to the individual to cope with stress and trauma. This knowledge is especially needed in understudied regions hit hard by the pandemic, such as the region of Central and Eastern Europe. A qualitative approach could provide unique insights into the subjective perspectives of survivors on their experiences with severe COVID-19 disease and its lingering impact on their lives. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to qualitatively explore the experiences of adult survivors of severe or critical COVID-19 throughout the acute and postacute period in 5 Central and Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia, Romania, and Poland); gain insight into negative (post-COVID-19 condition and quality of life) and positive (posttraumatic growth) long-term post-COVID effects; and understand the role of survivors' personal, social, and other coping resources and local sociocultural context and epidemic-related situations. METHODS This is a qualitative thematic analysis study with an experiential reflexive perspective and inductive orientation. The analytical approach involves 2-stage data analysis: national analyses in stage 1 and international analysis in stage 2. Data are collected from adult survivors of severe and critical COVID-19 through in-depth semistructured interviews conducted in the period after hospital discharge. RESULTS As of the publication of this paper, data collection is complete. The total international sample includes 151 survivors of severe and critical COVID-19: Bulgaria (n=33, 21.8%), Slovakia (n=30, 19.9%), Croatia (n=30, 19.9%), Romania (n=30, 19.9%), and Poland (n=28, 18.5%). National-level qualitative thematic analysis is currently underway, and several papers based on national results have been published. Cross-national analysis has started in 2024. The results will be submitted for publication in the third and fourth quarters of 2024. CONCLUSIONS This research emphasizes the importance of a deeper understanding of the ongoing health and psychosocial challenges survivors face and what helps them cope with these challenges and, in some cases, thrive. It has implications for informing holistic care and improving the health and psychosocial outcomes of survivors of COVID-19 and will be crucial for evaluating the overall impact and multifaceted implications of the pandemic and for informing future pandemic preparedness. Abstract
BACKGROUND Research on the pharmacogenetic influence of hepatic CYP450 enzyme 2D6 (CYP2D6) on metabolism of drugs for psychosis and associated outcome has been inconclusive. Some results suggest increased risk of adverse reactions in poor and intermediate metabolizers, while others find no relationship. However, retrospective designs may fail to account for the long-term pharmacological treatment of patients. Previous studies found that clinicians adapted risperidone dose successfully without knowledge of patient CYP2D6 phenotype. AIM Here, we aimed to replicate the results of those studies in a Dutch cohort of patients with psychosis (N = 418) on pharmacological treatment. METHOD We compared chlorpromazine-equivalent dose between CYP2D6 metabolizer phenotypes and investigated which factors were associated with dosage. This was repeated in two smaller subsets; patients prescribed pharmacogenetics-actionable drugs according to published guidelines, and risperidone-only as done previously. RESULTS We found no relationship between chlorpromazine-equivalent dose and phenotype in any sample (complete sample: p = 0.3, actionable-subset: p = 0.82, risperidone-only: p = 0.34). Only clozapine dose was weakly associated with CYP2D6 phenotype (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Clinicians were thus not intuitively adapting dose to CYP2D6 activity in this sample, nor was CYP2D6 activity associated with prescribed dose. Although the previous studies could not be replicated, this study may provide support for existing and future pharmacogenetic research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with psychotic disorders have been previously documented by the authors of this study. The aim of study is to investigate whether the effects of the pandemic continued among the same cohort of patients with psychotic disorders who participated in the initial study. METHODS 232 of the 255 participants in the initial study participated in this follow-up study. The assessment covered sociodemographic data, changes in physical and mental health since the pandemic, new diagnoses of physical illnesses, smoking, medication adherence, suicidal behavior. RESULTS The body weight of the patients before, during, and after the pandemic was 77.6 ± 13.1,81.3 ± 14.1,and 83.1 ± 14.3, respectively and there was increase in BW in the post-pandemic compared to before the pandemc and the during the pandemic (Z: - 8.658, p < 0.001, r: -0.57; Z: -6.852, p < 0.001, r: -0.45 respectively). The mean number of cigarettes smoked daily by the patient's before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and after the pandemic was 11.1 ± 14.2,14.9 ± 16.2,and 12.9 ± 14.9, respectively. There was a decrease in the number of cigarettes smoked daily in the post-pandemic compared to the during the pandemic (Z: -4753, p < 0.001, r: -0.45). Both suicidal ideations and attempts were significantly higher during the pandemic compared to after the pandemic (p < 0.001,p < 0.001). Medication adherence in the post-pandemic period was not different compared to the pandemic levels (Z: -0.621, p:0.535). CONCLUSION The study confirmed the continuation of adverse outcomes noted previously, such as increased body weight, increased daily cigarette consumption, and diminished medication adherence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to observe the incidence and potential risk factors of postoperative depression and anxiety in patients during the early period after undergoing orthognathic surgery. METHODS From March 7 to September 7, 2023, patients ≥ 18 years of age who were scheduled for elective orthognathic surgery under general anesthesia in Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology were included in this study. We prospectively evaluated their degrees of pre- and postoperative depression and anxiety using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Associations between the perioperative factors and occurrences of postoperative anxiety and depression were evaluated using a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS A total of 371 patients were included in the analysis. Within five days after surgery, we observed the occurrence of depression in 32% (116) of the patients and anxiety in 72.8% (270) of them. Their preoperative depression score on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale and intraoperative urine output were significantly associated with a higher risk of postoperative depression. The presence of preoperative anxiety, postoperative moderate-to-severe pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting and postoperative insomnia were significantly associated with a higher risk of postoperative anxiety. Furthermore, a monthly income ≥ ¥10000 was found to be significantly associated with a lower risk of postoperative anxiety. CONCLUSIONS Postoperative depression and anxiety are common among patients who undergo orthognathic surgery. Moreover, preoperative psychological status and incidence of postoperative adverse events were associated with an increased risk of depression and anxiety after surgery. The results of the present study suggest that careful psychological assessment and appropriate management are necessary to improve patients' recovery following orthognathic surgery.
