Thallium pollution in China and removal technologies for waters: A review

Thallium and potentially toxic elements distribution in pine needles, tree rings and soils around a pyrite mine and indication for environmental pollution

In this study, the distributions of thallium (Tl), and other potential toxic elements, such as Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, Sr, As, Cr, Ni, Zn, and Mn in needles, tree rings and soils of pine trees in one of the largest pyrite mining areas in the world, i.e., Yunfu, China were investigated. The results showed that pseudo-total Tl concentration of the tree rings ranged from 0.41 to 2.03 mg/kg (average: 1.12 mg/kg) during the year of 1998 to 2011. This indicates an overall obvious enrichment of Tl. Further investigation of element level variations in the pine needles showed a negative correlation between Tl content and the distance from the mining area. The results of Principal Component Analysis additionally demonstrated that Tl in the tree rings was most likely derived from the pine needles. Notably, Tl contents in the tree rings exhibited generally similar distribution pattern to the annual production intensity of Yunfu pyrite mining activities. The findings suggest that metal(loid)s in particular of Tl in pine tree rings can be used as alternative proxies to approximatively reconstruct the chronological change of atmospheric environmental pollution induced by pyrite associated mining/smelting activities.

Synergetic removal of thallium and antimony from wastewater with jacobsite-biochar-persulfate system

Both of thallium (Tl) and antimony (Sb) are toxic elements in the natural environment. Emerging Tl and Sb pollution in water has gradually gained public concerns globally. However, limited technologies are available for co-removal of Tl and Sb from wastewater. Herein, an novel system was successfully fabricated to enhance the synergetic removal of both Tl and Sb in wastewater. In this study, MnFe₂O₄-biochar composite (MFBC) facilely synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method was used as adsorbent and persulfate (PS) activator for simultaneously removing Tl and Sb from wastewater. The optimal reaction conditions for best removal efficiency of Tl and Sb simultaneously were obtained by using the response surface design combined with Box-Behnken Design (BBD) model. Results unveiled that the average removal rates of Tl and Sb can achieve 98.33% and 89.14%, respectively under the optimal reaction conditions. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), and radical quenching experiments showed that OH^• and SO₄^•- play a critical role in the removal of Tl-Sb compound pollution. Via using different characterization, it is revealed that the mechanism of removing Tl-Sb containing wastewater by MFBC-1.4/PS system is oxidation, adsorption, complexation and ion exchange. All these results indicate that MFBC-1.4/PS technology is prospective in highly effective removal of Tl and Sb from wastewater simultaneously.

Adsorptive behavior of thallium using Fe3O4-kaolin composite synthesized by a room temperature ferrite process

Thallium (Tl) contaminants pose serious threats to the ecological environment and human health due to its acute/chronic poisoning on the health of most organisms even at low concentrations. To find a rapid and efficient technology in removing Tl from waters thus becomes a crucial issue. A magnetic Fe₃O₄-kaolin composite (denoted by FKC) with high specific surface area (133.7 m²/g) was successfully synthesized via a simple and low-cost technique for Tl(I) removing from various water media. The HRTEM images confirmed the existence of lattice fingers Fe₃O₄ and displayed that a large number of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles dispersed on the surface of kaolin sheets. Compared with kaolin or Fe₃O₄ alone, FKC enhanced obviously the adsorption rate and capacity of Tl(I) over a wide pH range (4.5-9.0). The maximum adsorption capacity of FKC for Tl(I) was 19,347 mg/kg (calculated by Langmuir model), which was almost one hundred times and two times higher than those of kaolin and Fe₃O₄, respectively. Importantly, FKC was observed to have a great potential in removing Tl(I) from surface water, groundwater, and tap water in more alkaline conditions. By applying the external magnetic field, FKC could be recovered efficiently (99%) and rapidly (20 s). Moreover, Tl L₃-edge XANES spectra revealed that Tl(I) was adsorbed on the FKC and would not be converted to more toxic Tl(III). The cations (CaCl₂, NaCl, and KCl) and the ionic strength with concentrations of 0.001-1.0 mol/L showed a great influence on the adsorption of Tl(I) by FKC, implying that this adsorption was dominated by outer-sphere surface complexation at investigated pH values. The information provided is essential for designing a rapid and effective scavenger for removing Tl in various natural waters.

Novel Fluorescent Nanocellulose Hydrogel Based on Nanocellulose and Carbon Dots for Detection and Removal of Heavy Metal Ions in Water

Water is an important raw material in the food production process. Maintaining the quality and safety of water is very important in the food field. In this study, a simple novel fluorescent nanocellulose hydrogel (FNH) was prepared for the detection and removal of heavy metals (Fe³⁺ and Pb²⁺) in aqueous solutions based on carbon dots (CDs). The CDs were grafted onto the carboxylated nanocellulose (CNC) by the EDC/NHS coupling method, and then the nanocellulose (NC), CNC, and FNH were characterized by FTIR analysis. The effect of adsorption environment on FNH adsorption capacity was also investigated. After carboxylation and grafting of CDs, the adsorption capacity of nanocellulose to Fe³⁺ and Pb²⁺ was greatly improved, and it was also allowed to make fast visual responses to Fe³⁺ as an optical sensor to determine the concentration of Fe³⁺ through the visual signal. Static adsorption experiment demonstrated that the removal rate of Fe³⁺ and Pb²⁺ by FNH exceeded 69.4% and 98.2%, and the adsorption capacity amount reached 98.3 mg/g and 442.0 mg/g. At the same time, due to the fluorescence quenching effect of Fe³⁺, FNH could also be used for the detection of Fe³⁺ concentration in aqueous solution, and the limit of detection (LOD) could reach 62.5 mg/L.

Unexpected enrichment of thallium and its geochemical behaviors in soils impacted by historically industrial activities using lead‑zinc carbonate minerals

Thallium is a trace metal with severe toxicity. Contamination of thallium (Tl) generated by steel and non-ferrous metals industry is gaining growing concern worldwide. However, little is known on Tl contamination owing to industrial activities using carbonate minerals. This study revealed abundant geochemical mobile/bioavailable Tl (> 65.7%, in average; mostly in oxidizable fraction) in soils from a carbonate-hosted PbZn ore utilizing area in China for the first time. Unexpected Tl enrichment was observed in soil accompanying with 3655, 7820, 100.1, 27.3 and 29.9 mg/kg (in average) of Pb, Zn, As, Cd and Sb, respectively. Characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further confirmed that historical industrial activities impose anthropogenic catastrophic effects on the local agricultural soil system. The ecological and health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in soils proclaimed serious potential non-carcinogenic risks of Pb and V to adults, and Pb, Tl and As to children. Sequential extraction analysis showed that Tl, as well as Pb, Zn, Mn, Co, and Cd, mainly existed in the mobile fractions (exchangeable/acid-extractable, reducible and oxidizable), indicating an ecological risk of biological accumulation of multiple metal(loid)s in this area. These findings provide a theoretical basis for taking appropriate remediation measures in order to ensure safety of soils in such industrial areas likewise.

Light- and H2O2-Mediated Redox Transformation of Thallium in Acidic Solutions Containing Iron: Kinetics and Mechanistic Insights

The redox transformation between the oxidation states of thallium (Tl(I) and Tl(III)) is the key to influencing its toxicity, reactivity, and mobility. Dissolved iron (Fe) is widely distributed in the environment and coexists at a high level with Tl in acidic mine drainages (AMDs). While ultraviolet (UV) light and H₂O₂ can directly (by inducing Tl(III) reduction) and indirectly (by inducing Fe(III) to form reactive intermediates) impact the redox cycles of Tl in Fe(III)-containing solutions, the kinetics and mechanism remain largely unclear. This study is the first to investigate the UV light- and H₂O₂-mediated Tl redox kinetics in acidic Fe(III) solutions. The results demonstrate that UV light and H₂O₂ could directly reduce Tl(III) to Tl(I), with the extent of reduction dependent on the presence of Fe(III) and the solution pH. At pH 3.0, Tl(I) was completely oxidized to Tl(III), which can be ascribed to the generation of hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) from the Fe(III) photoreduction or Fe(III) reaction with H₂O₂. The kinetics of Tl(I) oxidation were strongly affected by the Fe(III) concentration, pH, light source, and water matrix. Kinetic models incorporating Tl redox kinetics with Fe redox kinetics were developed and satisfactorily interpreted Tl(III) reduction and Tl(I) oxidation under the examined conditions. These findings emphasize the roles of the UV light- and H₂O₂-driven Fe cycles in influencing the redox state of Tl, with implications for determining its mobility and fate in the environment.

Thermodynamic and kinetic coupling modeling for thallium(I) sorption at a heterogeneous titanium dioxide interface

The transformations of monovalent thallium (Tl) in an aqueous environment may be affected significantly by Tl(I) partitioning at the solid-water interface during sorption. Models used to quantify the kinetics of Tl(I) adsorption on heterogeneous adsorbents and formation of multiple complexes under a wide range of water chemistry conditions can accurately predict the environmental fate of thallium. In this study, Tl(I) sorption on representative titanium dioxide at different solution pH values and loading concentrations was investigated with two unified adsorption models, diffuse layer modeling and kinetics modeling. Three Tl(I) surface complexes, TiOTl, TiOHTl⁺, and TiOTlOH^-, were used in the diffuse layer model and successfully described batch adsorption and the results of spectroscopic analyses. The contribution of TiOHTl⁺ to the adsorption capacity was much higher than those of TiOTl and TiOTlOH^- under neutral and weakly alkaline conditions, while the species TiOTlOH^- predominated among Tl(I) complexes in strongly alkaline environments. The adsorption and desorption rate coefficients derived from thermodynamics and kinetics coupling modeling suggested the influence of different complex characteristics on adsorption and desorption of Tl(I). Our results provide a comprehensive model for predicting the dynamic binding behavior of Tl at heterogeneous solid-water interfaces.

Hydrochemistry and source apportionment of boron, sulfate, and nitrate in the Fen River, a typical loess covered area in the eastern Chinese Loess Plateau

Fen River Basin (FRB) is water-deficient and strongly influenced by human activities in the eastern Chinese Loess Plateau. The spatio-temporal variation and controlling factors of hyrochemistry and quality, sources of high boron, sulfate, and nitrate of surface waters in FRB were unclear. Major ions, δ¹¹B, δ¹⁵N, and δ¹⁸O in surface waters in dry season and wet season of FRB were analyzed and correlation analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), self-organizing map (SOM), forward model, and Bayesian isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) were used to solve above problems. Results showed that average riverine δ¹¹B, δ¹⁵N, and δ¹⁸O of FRB was 7.8‰, 11.2‰, and 1.3‰ (1SD), respectively. Dissolved solutes ranked midstream > downstream > upstream with water type of Na ⁺-Cl^-, Ca²⁺-Mg²⁺-Cl^-, and Ca²⁺-HCO₃^-, respectively. Low dissolved solutes were in forest areas while high values were in cropland and city areas. SOM analysis indicated that hydrochemistry was both influenced by natural (upstream) and pollutional input (midstream and downstream) and variation between dry season and wet season was minor. The abnormally high boron concentrations were mainly from silicate weathering (43%) and evaporites dissolution of loess (32%), urban and industrial input contributed 15% of riverine boron. High SO₄^2- (207 ± 267 mg/L, 1SD) was mainly from sulfates. δ¹⁵N and δ¹⁸O analysis indicated that nitrification was the primary N cycling process. Further, MixSIAR showed that NO₃^- was mainly from municipal sewage (∼67%) and the total contribution of chemical fertilizer and soil nitrogen was ∼30% with slightly higher values in upstream and wet season. Influenced by land-use types, evaporite dissolution, and anthropogenic input, water quality below midstream was worse and strict sewage reduction policies must be developed. This study highlights the significant influence of evaporite dissolution of loess and anthropogenic input (urban and industrial input for B and sewage for NO₃^-) on hydrochemistry and water quality.

Kinetics and mechanism of Thallium(I) oxidation by Permanganate: Role of bromide

The oxidation of thallium(I) (Tl (I)) to Tl (III) is referred to as an efficient means for Tl removal. Bromide (Br‾) inevitably occurs in nearly all water sources at concentrations of 0.01-67 mg/L (0.14-960 μM). The effect of Br‾ remains largely unclear but likely of critical importance on the redox fate and thus the removal potential of Tl (I) during typical oxidation treatment processes. Here, we investigate the kinetics and tackle the mechanism of Tl (I) oxidation by permanganate (KMnO₄) under the influence of Br‾. The results demonstrated that Br‾ at environmental levels exhibited significant catalytic effect on Tl (I) oxidation kinetics by KMnO₄ at acidic pH of 4.0-7.0, while no significant effect of Br‾ was observed for Tl(I) oxidation under alkaline conditions of pH 8.0 and 9.0. It was found that the enhanced oxidation kinetics under acidic conditions was driven by the combined effect of and autocatalysis mediated by MnO₂ and a fast oxidation kinetics served by in-situ formed bromine species. Through quantifying the relative contributions of those bromine species to the homogenous oxidation of Tl(I), HOBr, Br₂ and Br₂O were found to play roles in catalyzing the oxidation of Tl(I) by KMnO₄. The results discussed herein highlight the critical role of Br‾ on the Tl(I) complex oxidation process by KMnO₄ and may have implications for evaluating the redox cycle and removal potential of Tl in bromide-containing water treatment.

Thallium isotopic compositions as tracers in environmental studies: A review

Thallium is a highly poisonous heavy metal. Since Tl pollution control has been neglected worldwide until the present, countless Tl pollutants have been discharged into the environment, endangering the safety of drinking water, farmland soil, and food chain, and eventually posing a great threat to human health. However, the source, occurrence, pathway and fate of Tl in the environment remains understudied. As Tl in non-contaminated systems and from anthropogenic origin exhibits generally different isotopic signatures, which can provide fingerprint information and a novel way for tracing the anthropogenic Tl sources and understanding the environmental processes. This review summarizes: (i) the state-of-the-art development in highly-precise determination analytical method of Tl isotopic compositions, (ii) Tl isotopic fractionation induced by the low-temperature surface biogeochemical process, (iii) Tl isotopic signature of pollutants derived from anthropogenic activities and isotopic fractionation mechanism of Tl related to the high-temperature industrial activities, and (iv) application of Tl isotopic composition as a new tracer emerging tracer for source apportionment of Tl pollution. Finally, the limitations and possible future research about Tl isotopic application in environmental contamination is also proposed: (1) Tl fractionation mechanism in different environmental geochemistry processes and industrial activities should be further probed comprehensively; (2) Tl isotopes for source apportionment should be further applied in other different high Tl-contaminated scenarios (e.g., agricultural systems, water/sediment, and atmosphere).

One-pot synthesis of magnetic Prussian blue for the highly selective removal of thallium(I) from wastewater: Mechanism and implications

Thallium (Tl) often enters the environment via mineral exploitation and utilization. The main restriction of Tl removal is the interference of high concentrations of coexisting ions in wastewater, therefore, enhancing the selectivity for Tl is essential to its treatment. Magnetic Prussian blue particles (Fe₃O₄@PB), an ion-sieving material with an open structure, were synthesized through a "one-pot" method at room temperature for the highly selective removal of Tl⁺. The removal percentage of Tl⁺ was over 92% even when the concentration of coexisting ions (e.g. Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Pb²⁺) were 10,000 times higher than the initial concentration of Tl⁺. The maximal experimental removal capacity was 528 mg Tl/g Fe₃O₄@PB, and the removal percentage remained steady at pH 3-10. The high selectivity of Fe₃O₄@PB for Tl⁺ is attributed to the fact that hydrated Tl⁺ has a smaller hydrated diameter and a lower hydration free energy than other coexisting ions, while the rapid adsorption kinetics of Tl⁺ results from the negative surface charge and the network of nanocapillaries of the Fe₃O₄@PB. Overall, a new low-cost material that is easy to synthesize and has superior Tl⁺ removal capacity with extremely high selectivity for Tl⁺ was obtained for effective magnetic removal of thallium from wastewater.

Kinetics of Thallium(I) Oxidation by Free Chlorine in Bromide-Containing Waters: Insights into the Reactivity with Bromine Species

The oxidation of thallium [Tl(I)] to Tl(III) by chlorine (HOCl) is an important process changing its removal performance in water treatment. However, the role of bromide (Br^-), a common constituent in natural water, in the oxidation behavior of Tl(I) during chlorination remains unknown. Our results demonstrated that Br^- was cycled and acted as a catalyst to enhance the kinetics of Tl(I) oxidation by HOCl over the pH range of 5.0-9.5. Different Tl(I) species (i.e., Tl⁺ and TlOH(aq)) and reactive bromine species (i.e., HOBr/BrO^-, BrCl, Br₂O, and BrOCl) were kinetically relevant to the enhanced oxidation of Tl(I). The oxidation by free bromine species became the dominant pathway even at a low Br^- level of 50 μg/L for a chlorine dose of 2 mg of Cl₂/L. It was found that the reactions of Tl⁺/BrCl, Tl⁺/BrOCl, and TlOH(aq)/HOBr dominated the kinetics of Tl(I) oxidation at pH < 6.0, pH 6.0-8.0, and pH > 8.0, respectively. The species-specific rate constants for Tl⁺ reacting with individual bromine species were determined and decreased in the order: BrCl > Br₂ > BrOCl > Br₂O > HOBr. Overall, the presented results refine our knowledge regarding the species-specific reactivity of TI(I) with bromine species and will be useful for further prediction of thallium mobility in chlorinated waters containing bromide.

Cotransport of thallium(I) with polystyrene plastic particles in water-saturated porous media

Exploring the transport behaviors of thallium (Tl) in porous media is crucial for predicting Tl pollution in natural soils and groundwater. In recent years, the misuse of plastics has led to plastic becoming an emerging pollutant in soil. In this work, the effects of plastic particles on Tl(I) transport in water-saturated sand columns were investigated under different ionic strengths (ISs), pH values, and plastic particle sizes. The two-site nonequilibrium model was selected to fit the breakthrough curves (BTCs) of Tl(I). The results demonstrated that nanoplastics (NPs) accelerated Tl(I) transport at pH 7, which might be attributed to the competitive adsorption of NPs and Tl(I) on sand surfaces. However, at pH 5, the deposited NPs might provide more adsorption sites for Tl(I), and thus enhance its retention in the columns. In addition, the "straining" process could intercept microplastics (MPs) with Tl(I) that was attached under unfavorable attachment conditions, which would result in the inhibited mobility of Tl(I). On the other hand, the migration of plastics was restrained to some extent when Tl(I) was present. Overall, the findings from this work provided a new perspective for understanding the transport of Tl(I) and plastics in subsurface environments.

Prenatal serum thallium exposure and cognitive development among preschool-aged children: A prospective cohort study in China

Thallium, a highly toxic heavy metal and priority pollutant, has been widely reported to cause neurodevelopmental toxicity in animals. However, accessible epidemiological studies concerning the neurodevelopmental toxicity of early-life thallium exposure in humans are limited. In a prospective birth cohort including 2164 mother-child pairs, we explored the effect of prenatal serum thallium exposure on cognitive development among preschool-aged children born in Ma'anshan, Anhui, China. Serum thallium concentrations were measured in the first trimester, second trimester, third trimester, and cord blood by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Child cognitive development was appraised by the Chinese version of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) at 4.5 years old. Multiple informants generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were fit to jointly estimate the association between the four repeated measurements of thallium concentrations and the preschool-aged children's cognitive test scores. After adjusting for potential confounders, the visual spatial index (VSI) was 1.45 points lower in the highest tertile of serum thallium during the first trimester than in the lowest tertile (p for trend = 0.04). Moreover, children in the highest tertile of serum thallium during the third trimester had a significantly lower full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) (β = -1.51, 95% CI: -2.68, -0.35), VSI (β = -1.79, 95% CI: -3.16, -0.42), fluid reasoning index (FRI) (β = -1.41, 95% CI: -2.73, -0.10), and processing speed index (PSI) (β = -1.47, 95% CI: -2.71, -0.24) scores than the children in the lowest tertile. When performing stratified analysis by child sex, the associations of first- and third-trimester thallium concentrations with cognitive test scores were more prominent in boys than in girls. Our findings revealed that maternal serum thallium exposure during the first and third trimesters, but not other periods, had detrimental effects on preschoolers' cognitive development, and these effects showed sex differences.

Highly efficient removal of thallium(I) by facilely fabricated amorphous titanium dioxide from water and wastewater

In this study, amorphous hydrous titanium dioxide was synthesized by a facile precipitation method at room temperature, aiming to effectively remove thallium(I) from water. The titanium dioxide prepared using ammonia as precipitant (TiO2I) is more effective for thallium(I) uptake than the one synthesized with sodium hydroxide (TiO2II). The TiO2 obtained particles are amorphous, aggregates of many nanoparticles and irregular in shape. The thallium(I) uptake increases with the rise of solution pH value. Under neutral pH conditions, the maximal thallium(I) adsorption capacities of TiO2I and TiO2II are 302.6 and 230.3 mg/g, respectively, outperforming most of the reported adsorbents. The amorphous TiO2 has high selectivity towards thallium(I) in the presence of multiple cations such as K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+. Moreover, the TiO2I is efficient in removing thallium(I) from real river water and mining wastewater. Additionally, the spent TiO2I can be regenerated using hydrochloric acid solution and reused. The Tl(I) adsorption is achieved via replacing the H+ in hydroxyl group on the surface of TiO2 and forming inner-sphere surface complexes. Owing to its high efficiency, facile synthesis and environmental friendliness, the TiO2I has the potential to be used as an alternative adsorbent to remove Tl(I) from water.

Development of Pectin-Based Aerogels with Several Excellent Properties for the Adsorption of Pb2

Traditional aerogels lack specific functional groups for the adsorption of Pb2+, which results in a low adsorption capacity and limits the application scope. Novel porous pectin-based aerogels (PPEAs) were prepared by incorporating polyethylenimine (PEI) using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) as a cross-linker for the removal of Pb2+ from water. The cross-linking mechanism, morphology, mechanical strength, thermal stability, adsorption properties, and mechanism of the aerogels were investigated. The aerogels possessed several desirable features, such as a large maximum Pb2+ adsorption capacity (373.7 mg/g, tested at pH 5.0), ultralight (as low as 63.4 mg/cm3), high mechanical strength (stress above 0.24 MPa at 50% strain), and easy recyclability. Meanwhile, the equilibrium adsorption data was well described by the Langmuir-Freundlich (Sips) model and the kinetic adsorption process was well fitted using the pseudo-second-order model. The donor groups, such as -NH2, and oxygen-containing functional groups were responsible for the Pb2+ adsorption, which was confirmed by the FTIR and XPS analysis. The excellent characteristics mean that PPEAs are highly effective adsorbents in the remediation of lead-containing wastewater.

The associations between urinary metals and metal mixtures and kidney function in Chinese community-dwelling older adults with diabetes mellitus

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have found associations between single toxic metals, such as arsenic and cadmium, and kidney function in adults with diabetes. However, studies with regards to other metals and metal mixtures are still limited.

OBJECTIVE

Our study aimed to investigate the associations between urinary concentrations of 5 selected metals and metal mixtures and kidney function using a sample of older adults with diabetes mellitus in Chinese communities.

METHODS

In a sample of older adults (n = 5186), 592 eligible subjects were included in this study. Urinary concentrations of 5 metals, i.e., arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), vanadium (V), cobalt (Co), and thallium (Tl), were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated and dichotomized into indicator of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Logistic analysis and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to explore the associations between single metals and metal mixtures and CKD, respectively.

RESULTS

Urinary levels of As and V were positively correlated with CKD (OR=2.37, 95% CI: 1.31-4.30 for As; OR=2.24, 95% CI: 1.25-4.03 for V), when compared the 4th quartile with the 1st quartile. After adjustment for potential confounders, the significant association between As and CKD still existed (OR=2.73, 95% CI: 1.23-6.07). BKMR analyses showed strong linear positive associations between As and V and CKD. Higher urinary levels of the mixture were significantly associated with higher odds of CKD in a dose-response pattern. As and V showed the highest posterior inclusion probabilities.

CONCLUSION

Urine As and V were positively associated with CKD in older adults with diabetes mellitus, separately and in a mixture. The metals mixture showed a linear dose-response association with the odds of CKD. The analyses of mixtures, rather than of single metals, may provide a real-world perspective on the relationship between metals and kidney function.

Associations of plasma metal concentrations with the risks of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality in Chinese adults

BACKGROUND

Exposure to metals/metalloids from both the natural environment and anthropogenic sources have a complex influence on human health. However, relatively few studies have explored the relations of exposure to multiple metals/metalloids with mortality. Therefore, this prospective study aims to examine the relations of multiple metal/metalloids exposures with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.

METHODS

A total of 6155 participants within the Dongfeng-Tongji (DF-TJ) cohort were involved in this analysis, which were followed for mortality until December 31, 2018. We applied inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure baseline plasma concentrations of 23 metals. We utilized Cox regression models to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause and CVD mortality associated with metal concentrations. We proposed plasma metal score to assess the simultaneous exposure to multiple metals through summing each metal concentration weighted by the regression coefficients with all-cause mortality.

RESULTS

During the follow-up (mean duration, 9.8 years), we ascertained 876 deaths, including 416 deaths of CVD (157 deaths of coronary heart disease and 259 deaths of stroke). In the multiple-metals model, after adjusting for potential confounders, plasma copper, molybdenum, and vanadium were positively associated with all-cause mortality, whereas manganese, selenium, and thallium were negatively associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, with adjusted HRs (95% Confidence Interval, CI) of the fourth quartiles were 1.73 (1.42-2.11, P-trend < 0.001) for copper, 1.33 (1.09-1.63, P-trend = 0.005) for molybdenum, 1.43 (1.16-1.77, P-trend < 0.001) for vanadium, 0.74 (0.58-0.94, P-trend = 0.005) for manganese, 0.68 (0.56-0.83, P-trend < 0.001) for selenium, and 0.74 (0.59-0.92, P-trend = 0.002) for thallium, respectively. Positive associations were observed between plasma copper, molybdenum, vanadium concentrations and CVD mortality, whereas negative associations were found for plasma selenium and thallium concentrations with CVD mortality in the multiple-metals model. Compared with the first quartiles, the HRs of fourth quartiles were 1.94 (1.45-2.58, P-trend < 0.001) for copper, 1.72 (1.26-2.35, P-trend < 0.001) for molybdenum, 1.81 (1.32-2.47, P-trend < 0.001) for vanadium, 0.67 (0.50-0.89, P-trend = 0.003) for selenium, and 0.58 (0.41-0.81, P-trend < 0.001) for thallium, respectively. The plasma metal score was significantly associated with higher risks of all-cause and CVD death in dose-response fashions. When compared with the first quartiles of plasma metal score, the HRs of fourth quartiles were 2.16 (1.76-2.64; P-trend < 0.001) for all-cause mortality and 3.00 (2.24-4.02; P-trend < 0.001) for CVD mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

The study indicated that several plasma metals/metalloids were key determinants and predictors of all-cause and CVD death in the Chinese population. Our findings highlighted the importance to comprehensively assess and monitor multiple metals/metalloids exposures.

Toxic effects of thallium acetate by acute exposure to the nematode C. elegans

BACKGROUND

Thallium (Tl) is a toxic metalloid and an emerging pollutant due to electronic devices and dispersal nearby base-metal mining. Therefore, Tl poses a threat to human health and especially the long-term impact on younger individuals exposed is still unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the toxic effects of thallium acetate in C. elegans in early larval stages, considering physiological and behavioral endpoints, as well as the Tl absorption and bioaccumulation.

METHODS

Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) was exposed to Thallium acetate (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 500, and 1000 μM) in the L1 larval stage, with the purpose to observe the toxic effects invoked until adulthood. Transgenic worms strains were transported GFP, reporters to DAF-16 and were used to verify the antioxidant response. ICP-MS quantified total Tl⁺ concentration to evidence Tl uptake and bioaccumulation.

RESULTS

Thallium acetate caused a significant reduction in the number of living worms (p < 0.0001 in 100-1000 μM), a delay in larval development (p < 0.01; p < 0.001 and p < 0.0001 in 100-1000 μM) through the larval stages, and egg production in the worm's uterus was reduced. Thallium acetate also induced behavioral changes. Additionally, thallium acetate activated antioxidant pathway responses in C. elegans by translocating the DAF-16 transcription factor and activation of SOD-3::GFP expression. The Tl⁺ quantification in worms showed its absorption in the L1 larval stage and bioaccumulation in the body after development.

CONCLUSIONS

Thallium acetate reduced survival, delayed development, caused behavioral changes, induced responses inherent to oxidative stress, and serious damage to the worm's reproduction. In addition, C. elegans absorbed and bioaccumulated Tl⁺. Together, our results highlight the impacts of Tl⁺ exposure in the early stages of life, even for a short period.

Method Validation for Determination of Thallium by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and Monitoring of Various Foods in South Korea

Thallium (Tl) is a rare element and one of the most harmful metals. This study validated an analytical method for determining Tl in foods by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) based on food matrices and calories. For six representative foods, the method's correlation coefficient (R2) was above 0.999, and the method limit of detection (MLOD) was 0.0070-0.0498 μg kg-1, with accuracy ranging from 82.06% to 119.81% and precision within 10%. We investigated 304 various foods in the South Korean market, including agricultural, fishery, livestock, and processed foods. Tl above the MLOD level was detected in 148 samples and was less than 10 μg kg-1 in 98% of the samples. Comparing the Tl concentrations among food groups revealed that fisheries and animal products had higher Tl contents than cereals and vegetables. Tl exposure via food intake did not exceed the health guidance level.

Toxic Effects of Thallium on Biological Indicators of Haplic Chernozem Health: A Case Study

Thallium (Tl) was introduced into Haplic Chernozem in the amounts of 3, 30, and 300 mg/kg, and biological indicators were observed at 10, 30, and 90 days after incubation in the laboratory experiment. An increase in biological activities; i.e., the total number of bacteria, Azotobacter spp. abundance, enzymes (catalase, dehydrogenases), and phytotoxic indicators (germination rate of radish) after 30 days of Tl exposure were noted. The total number of bacteria and Azotobacter spp. abundance, enzyme activity, and phytotoxicity were more sensitive (16–76%) and informative (12–65%) indicators compared to the control, respectively. Integral biological indicators of soil state (IIBS) noted at 10, 30, and 90 days decreased at a dose of 30 and 300 mg/kg by 13–43% in relation to the control. An increase in Tl concentration and duration of exposure (up to 90 days) inhibited biological properties and caused ecotoxicological effects, respectively. We concluded that the use of individual indicators served as an indicator of the state of the soil.

Thallium geochemical fractionation and migration in Tl-As rich soils: The key controls

Thallium (Tl) pollution caused by mining and processing of Tl-enriched ores has become an increasing concern. This study explored the geochemical fractionation and vertical transfer of Tl in a soil profile (200 cm) from a representative Tl-As mineralized area, Southwest China. The results showed that the soils were heavily enriched by Tl and As, with concentration ranging from 3.91-17.3 and 1830-8840 mg/kg (6.79 and 2973 mg/kg in average), respectively. Approximately 50% of Tl occurred in geochemically mobile fractions in the topsoil, wherein the reducible fraction was the most enriched fraction. Further characterization using LA-ICP-MS and TEM revealed that enriched Tl and As in soils were mainly inherited from the weathering of mine tailing piles upstream. XPS characterization indicated that Fe oxides herein may play a critical role in the oxidation of Tl(I) to Tl(III) which provoked further adsorption of Tl onto Fe oxides, thereby facilitating Tl enrichment in the reducible fraction. The findings highlight that the pivotal role of Fe oxides from mineralized area in the co-mobility and migration of Tl and As in the depth profile.

Thallium in aquatic environments and the factors controlling Tl behavior

Although thallium (Tl) usually exists in a very low level in the natural environment, it is highly toxic. With the development of mining and metallurgical industry and the wide application of Tl in the field of high technologies, Tl poses an increasing threat to the ecological environment and human health. This paper summarizes the research results of the toxicity of Tl as well as the distribution, occurrence forms, migration, and transformation mechanism of Tl in rivers, lakes, mining areas, estuaries, coastal waters, and oceans. It also discusses the influence mechanisms of pH, redox potential, suspended particulate matters, photochemical reaction, natural minerals, cation/anion, organic matters, and microorganisms on the environmental behavior of Tl. This paper points out the shortcomings of Tl research methods in water environment, and looks forward to the future development directions: First, the technology for separating Tl(III) and Tl(I) is still immature, especially it is difficult to effectively separate Tl(III) and Tl(I) in seawater. Second, the development of many advanced in situ detection technologies will bring great convenience to the studies of the dynamic mechanisms of Tl migration and transformation in the environments. Third, adsorption is the most effective mechanism to remove Tl from water, in which modified metal oxides or macrocyclic organic compounds have high application potential.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with a magnetic nanocomposite followed by electrothermal atomic absorption measurement for the speciation of thallium

A magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction procedure for the determination of the thallium content in waters is presented. The incorporation in the sample (10 mL) of a small amount of graphene-Fe₃O₄ composite (3.6 mg) in the presence of 10^-4 mol L^-1 Aliquat 336 at pH 2 results in the complete retention of both thallium(I) and thallium(III). After separation with a magnet, the micro-solid phase recovered is treated with 0.05 mL of a 0.1 mol L^-1 sodium ethylenediaminetetracetate solution at pH 9, and the supernatant obtained after application of the magnet is introduced in the electrothermal atomizer of an atomic absorption spectrometer to obtain the signal corresponding to the total thallium content. For speciation, the trivalent form in a second sample aliquot is separated by means of a liquid-liquid extraction stage with chloroform and methyl trioctyl ammonium in the presence of bromide, and the signal corresponding to the monovalent form is obtained, the concentration of thallium(III) being obtained by difference. The enrichment factor is 185, which permits a detection limit as low as 0.01 μg L^-1 of the analyte to be achieved. The relative standard deviation for five measurements at the 0.1 μg L^-1 thallium level is below 5%. The reliability of the procedure is verified by analysing five certified reference samples for which speciation data are also given.

Groundwater hydrochemistry, source identification and pollution assessment in intensive industrial areas, eastern Chinese loess plateau

Groundwater is essential for regional ecological-economic system and is an important resource of drinking water, especially in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), where is a typical water-limited ecosystem. Groundwater quality deterioration will affect water security and exacerbate the water shortages. Groundwater hydrochemistry, pollution source apportionment, quality and health risks were evaluated based on analysis of major ions and selected trace elements in seasonal samples of the Fen River Basin (FRB) in the eastern CLP. Groundwaters in the FRB were mainly HCO₃^--Ca²⁺-Na⁺ water type with low dissolved solutes in upstream samples, high values in midstream samples and medium values in downstream samples. Solutes in upstream samples were mainly derived from carbonate weathering, while those in midstream and downstream samples came from silicate weathering, evaporites dissolution and anthropogenic sources. Self-organizing map (SOM) showed the hydrochemistry remained unchanged from dry to wet season for most sampling points. The seasonal variations of Ag, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Tl were significant due to anthropogenic input. High NO₃^- in upstream and downstream samples resulted primarily from sewage discharge, and high SO₄^2- in midstream and downstream samples was from gypsum- and coal-related industries. In addition, anthropogenic input related to coal industries significantly aggravates pollution of As, Ni, Ag, Fe, and Mn. Influenced by evaporites and anthropogenic input, midstream samples had high salinity, total hardness and water quality indices (WQIs) and were unsuitable for irrigation or drinking purposes. Seasonal variation of WQI in the FRB was unsignificant except Jiaokou River sub-basin, where groundwater quality was worse in the wet season than the dry season due to coal mining. Great attention should be paid to the high non-carcinogenic risks of exposure to F, V, Mn, and Cr via dermal absorption, particularly for children. Overall, groundwater quality in the FRB was best in upstream, medium in midstream and worst in midstream based on different index. Groundwater quality is deteriorated by anthropogenic input and the sewage discharge in the FRB should be strictly controlled. Our report provides a reference for groundwater pollution evaluation and source identification in similar areas.

Mechanical Properties and Toxicity Risks of Lead-Zinc Sulfide Tailing-Based Construction Materials

The leaching residue of the lead-zinc sulfide tailing (LRT) is the only residue generated from the tailing leaching recovery process; it is a typical hazardous material for its high heavy-metal contents and high acidity. Due to the large output of LRT, and because its main components are Ca, Si, and Al, the preparation of building construction materials with LRT was studied. The results showed that when the LRT addition is less than 47%, with the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and fly ash (FA) added and the curing conditions appropriate, the strength values of the tested specimens meet the M15 Class of the autoclaved lime sand brick standard (GB/T 16753-1997). The carbonization coefficient and drying shrinkage of the specimen were 0.79 and smaller than 0.42, respectively. As the SEM, TG, and XRD analysis have shown, the LRT can chemically react with additives to form stable minerals. The heavy metal contents that were leached out well met the limits in GB5085.3-2007. Based on the high addition of the LRT, the good strength and lower heavy metals were leached out of the prepared test specimen, and the tailing could be reused completely with the leaching recovery and the LRT reuse process. LRT can be used to replace OPC, allowing more sustainable concrete production and improved ecological properties of LRT.

Genotoxicity and cytotoxicity evaluation of two thallium compounds using the Drosophila wing somatic mutation and recombination test

Thallium (Tl) is a heavy and toxic metal and a byproduct of several human activities, such as cement production, mining, and coal combustion. Thallium is found in fruits, vegetables, and animal fodder with high Tl contamination; therefore, it is an environmental pollution issue and a toxicological contamination problem for human beings and other organisms when exposed to it. The mutagenic potential of Tl and its compounds is controversial, and there are few in vivo studies on its effects. We conducted the animal bioassay Drosophila wing somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) to test for genotoxicity and assessed the genotoxic effects of Tl acetate (TlCH₃COO) and Tl sulfate (Tl₂SO₄) on Drosophila melanogaster. Third instar larvae from the SMART standard cross (ST) were fed Tl acetate [0.2, 2, 20, 200, 600 and 1200 μM] and Tl sulfate [0.2, 2, 20, 200, and 600 μM]. Hexavalent chromium [CrO₃, 500 μM] served as the positive control, and Milli-Q water served as the negative control. Only the high Tl₂SO₄ [600 μM] concentration resulted in genotoxicity with 87.6% somatic recombination, and both salts disrupted cell division of wing imaginal disc cells, showing the expected cytotoxic effects. Genotoxic risks due to high metal levels by bioaccumulation of Tl⁺¹ or its compounds require further evaluation with other in vivo and in vitro assays.

Tracing Riverine Particulate Black Carbon Sources in Xijiang River Basin: Insight from Stable Isotopic Composition and Bayesian Mixing Model

Rivers transport abundant terrestrial carbon into the ocean, constituting a fundamental channel between terrestrial carbon pools and oceanic carbon pools. The black carbon (BC) derived from biomass and fossil fuel combustion is an important component of the riverine organic carbon flux. A recent study estimated that approximately 17 ~ 37 Tg C of BC was delivered in suspended particle phase by rivers per year. The particulate black carbon (PBC) in river systems has rarely been investigated and its controlling factors have remained largely unknown. The stable isotopic compositions of PBC in Xijiang River during the wet season are reported in this study. We found that the PBC/particulate organic carbon (POC) ratio in Xijiang River was slightly higher than that of other rivers, which may be a result of the mobility difference between POC and PBC, aerosol BC input and riverine biogenic effect. We found that the isotopic compositions of PBC depleted ¹³C compared with those of POC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). This divergence may be derived from the fractionation during soil organic matter production and biomass burning or fossil fuel combustion BC particles input with different isotopic compositions. The MixSIAR model indicated that most of the PBC in the study area was derived from fossil fuel combustion (~80%), the contribution of C4 plants burning was limited. Our result highlights that in the watershed without wildfire impact, the aeolian transport and deposition of the particles from fuel oil, coal combustion, and vehicle exhaust could significantly affect the BC flux in rivers.

Emergent thallium exposure from uranium mill tailings

Thallium (Tl) pollution caused by the exploitation of uranium (U) mines has long been neglected due to its low crustal abundance. However, Tl may be enriched in minerals of U ore because Tl has both sulfurophile and lithophile properties. Herein, a semi-dynamic leaching experiment combined with statistical analysis, geochemical speciation and multi-characterization provided novel insight into the distinct features and mechanisms of Tl release from uranium mill tailings (UMT). The results showed that particle size effects prevail over the pH on Tl release, and surface dissolution is the pivotal mechanism controlling Tl release based on Fick's diffusion model. The study revealed that long-term leaching and weathering can lead to the increased acid-extractable and oxidizable fractions of Tl in UMT, and that the exposure and dissolution of Tl-containing sulfides would largely enhance the flux of Tl release. The findings indicate that UMT containing (abundant) pyrite should be paid particular attention due to Tl exposure. Besides, critical concern over the potential Tl pollution in universal U mining and hydrometallurgical areas likewise may need to be seriously reconsidered.

Application of biochars in the remediation of chromium contamination: Fabrication, mechanisms, and interfering species

Chromium (Cr) is one of the most toxic pollutants that has accumulated in terrestrial and aqueous systems, posing serious risks towards living beings on a worldwide scale. The immobilization, removal, and detoxification of active Cr from natural environment can be accomplished using multiple advanced materials. Biochar, a carbonaceous pyrolytic product made from biomass waste, is considered as a promising material for the elimination of Cr contamination. The preparation and properties of biochar as well as its remediation process for Cr ions have been well investigated. However, the distinct correlation of the manufacturing, characteristics, and mechanisms involved in the remediation of Cr contamination by various designed biochars is not summarized. Herein, this review provides information about the production, modification, and characteristics of biochars along with their corresponding effects on Cr stabilization. Biochar could be modified via physical, hybrid, chemical, and biological methods. The remediating mechanisms of Cr contamination using biochars involve adsorption, reduction, electron shuttle, and photocatalysis. Moreover, the coexisting ions and organic pollutants change the pattern of the remediating process of biochar in actual Cr contaminated water and soil. Finally, the present limitations and future perspectives are proposed.

Behavior of thallium in pulverized coal utility boiler installations in Southwest China

Thallium (Tl) is a toxic element that exists in coal at trace level. Coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) consume large amounts of coal and can potentially release this element into surrounding environment. However, knowledge of fates of Tl inside CFPPs and associated atmospheric emissions is still very limited. In this study, five CFPPs with pulverized coal boilers (PC) in Guizhou province, southwest China, were selected for investigation. All input and output solid materials and the stack flue gas samples were collected simultaneously. Tl concentrations in feed coal (0.10-0.34 mg·kg^-1) of the five CFPPS were only a third to one half of the national average value. Tl concentrations were obviously higher in fly ash (0.39-1.13 mg·kg^-1) than in bottom ash (0.09-0.25 mg·kg^-1), indicating notable redistribution of Tl during coal combustion. Tl concentrations were low in limestone (0.01-0.02 mg·kg^-1), flue gas desulfurization gypsum (0.01-0.03 mg·kg^-1), and the stack flue gas (0.006-0.011 μg·Nm^-3). Most Tl inside these CFPPs was captured by electrostatic precipitator or electrostatic precipitator-fabric filter (ESP/ESP-FF) fly ash (88.66%-97.44%), followed by bottom ash (2.13%-10.73%), gypsum (<3.89%), and stack emissions (0.01%-0.05%). Atmospheric emission factors of Tl from different CFPPs are in the range of 0.04-0.09 mg Tl·t^-1 coal, 0.02-0.04 μg·(kW·h)^-1, or 0.002-0.004 g Tl·TJ^-1. Using these emission factors, a total of 3.96 ± 1.32 kg (range: 2.64-5.94 kg) Tl is estimated to be released into the atmosphere annually from CFPPs in Guizhou in 2017. To avoid the cross-media contamination from the combustion products, careful treatment of the captured fly ash, bottom ash, and gypsum is needed, considering that a large amount of Tl (average: 728 kg·yr^-1; range: 664-792 kg·yr^-1) is retained in these solid combustion products and the possibility of formation of more toxic Tl³⁺ during the combustion process.Implications: Thallium (Tl) is a rare but toxic element. Identifying and quantifying its source are high priorities for controling its contamination. Coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) were thought an important source of Tl, but few field studies had been conducted for this area. In this article, we investigated the fate of Tl in five pulverized coal utility power plants in Guizhou province, Southwest China, and found the Tl concentration in stack gas is in low levels of 0.006-0.011 μg·Nm^-3, and less than 0.05% of total input of Tl is escaped into the ambient atmosphere. The majority of Tl (88.7%-97.4% of the total output) is detained by the ESP/ESP-FF fly ashes. Compared to the little amount (~4 kg·yr^-1) of Tl that discharged into the atmosphere from Guizhuo's CFPPs in 2017, more Tl (over 700 kg) ends up in the solid coal combustion products each year, which makes the need of careful disposal of this solid combustion waste to prevent the mobilization of Tl into the environment.

Contamination, oral bioaccessibility and human health risk assessment of thallium and other metal(loid)s in farmland soils around a historic TlHg mining area

In this study, tweenty-nine soil samples were collected from a historic TlHg mining area, located in southwest Guizhou, China. Total concentrations of metal(loid)s in soils and in vitro extracts were analysed by ICP-MS, and the bioaccessibility of metal(loid)s was conducted by two often used in vitro extraction methods, Simplified bioaccessibility Extraction Test (SBET) and Physiologically Based Extraction Test (PBET). The health risk assessment based on total concentrations of metal(loid)s, bioaccessibility of SBET and PBET through soil ingestion were investigated. Results indicated that the collected cultivated soils contained elevated concentrations of Tl (44.8 ± 67.7 mg kg^-1), Hg (110 ± 193 mg kg^-1), As (84.4 ± 89.2 mg kg^-1) and Sb (14.8 ± 24.8 mg kg^-1), exceeding the regional background values of Guizhou province, China and the Chinese farmland risk screening values. However, the bioaccessibility of Tl, Hg, As and Sb were relatively low, usually less than 30% for most samples and varied greatly among metal(loid)s and sampling sites. The average bioaccessibility values of Tl, Hg, As and Sb by SBET were lower than those by PBET. The non-carsinogenic risk (HQ and HI) and Carcinogenic Risk (CR) values were significantly reduced when incorporating the bioaccessibiltiy of metal(loid)s into health risk assessment. It is worth noting that the health risk to children exceeded adults. Moreover, Tl and As contributed the most to the risk, indicating that more attention should be paid on Tl and As during the daily environmental regulation and management of contaminated soils in Lanmuchang.

Spatiotemporal variations, sources, water quality and health risk assessment of trace elements in the Fen River

As the largest river in Shanxi Province, the Fen River is the main water source for regional economic and ecological development. Water deficiency and industrialization have led to serious water pollution in the Fen River. The major and trace elements of seasonal river waters were measured to determine the spatiotemporal variations and assess the water quality as well as its controlling factors in the Fen River. Trace elements are divided into high abundance elements (B, Ba, Li, and Mn) and low abundance elements (As, Cu, Fe, Ni, Rb, Se, U, and V). The spatial variation of trace elements is obvious, with low values upstream, intermediate values downstream, and very high values midstream. The average values of the trace elements showed different seasonal variations, with high values of As, B, Ba, Mn, and Rb in the wet season, high Cu, V, and Li values in the dry season, and minor seasonal variations of Fe, Ni, Se, and U concentrations. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis (CA) showed natural origins of Ba, Mn, Ni, and U, anthropogenic input of As, B, Cu, Li, Rb, Se, and V. According to the results of absolute principal component sore-multivariate linear regression (APCS-MLR), the major pollution sources in the Fen River basin were related to human activities. The land use type significantly influenced the concentrations of trace elements, with high values in the cropland and low values in the forest. The water quality index (WQI) values were higher in the midstream and wet season. In comparison with other rivers in the world, the pollution of the Fen River is at a moderate level. Health risk assessment showed that As, Ba, Mn, Ni, V, and Se were the potential pollutants damaging in the Fen River, especially for children. This study highlights the importance of seasonal sample analysis and can provide vital data for water quality conservation in the Fen River basin.

Ecological risk assessment of trace metals in soils affected by mine tailings

Environmental impacts caused by mine dam ruptures or inappropriate tailing depositions represent a global concern. An ecological risk assessment was performed in 18 areas affected by the collapse of a major mining dam in southeastern Brazil, in two monitoring periods (2015 and 2018). In these areas, pedogeochemical surveys, and ecological risk levels were determinate. In addition, ecotoxicological assays with Proisotoma minuta (Collembola) were carried out in laboratory. Soil screening values indicated that all contaminated areas were above regional reference values for soil quality for at least one metal (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn), likewise exceeding threshold values for potential ecological and human health risks. In two monitoring years, significant ecotoxicity in the avoidance and reproduction of P. minuta (> 60 % and >80 %, respectively) were evidenced in most soils; and lethal responses in some areas like Córrego Novo, Governador Valadares and Tumiritinga. Results suggest changes in soil physical-chemical properties due to tailing deposition, thus affecting soil dwellers. This study can elucidate the use of appropriate tools to ecological risk assessments, helping to identify the priority areas for defining remediation and monitoring strategies.

Highly efficient removal of thallium in wastewater by MnFe2O4-biochar composite

Thallium (Tl), is a highly toxic trace metal in the natural environment. Emerging Tl pollution in waters has gradually become a global concern. However, limited removal technologies are available for Tl-containing wastewater. Herein, MnFe₂O₄-biochar composite (MFBC) was successfully fabricated via coprecipitation method as a novel and efficient adsorbent for treating Tl(I)-contaminated wastewater. It was found that the MFBC, with a specific surface area of 187.03 m²/g, exhibited high performance across a wide pH range of 4-11, with the superior Tl(I) removal capacity (170.55 mg/g) based on Langmuir model (pH 6.0, a dosage of 1 g/L). The removal mechanisms included physical and chemical adsorption, ion exchange, surface complexation, and oxidation. This investigation revealed that MFBC is a promising and environmentally friendly adsorbent with a low cost, large specific surface area, magnetic properties, and high efficiency for the removal of Tl(I) from wastewater.

Novel magnetic loofah sponge biochar enhancing microbial responses for the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-contaminated sediment

Magnetic activated carbon and magnetic biochar have been widely used for contaminants removal due to the advantages of sequestration and recovery. However, the remediation function and microbial response of conductive magnetic carbonaceous materials for treating organic contaminated sediment are poorly understood. In this study we applied novel three-dimensional mesh magnetic loofah sponge biochar (MagLsBC), made from natural agricultural product, to remediate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated sediment. Compared to other carbon-based materials, MagLsBC achieved the high reduction of PAHs content and bioavailability in sediment by respectively 31.9 % and 38.1 % after 350 days. Microbial analysis showed that MagLsBC amended sediment had different community diversity, structure and enriched dominant species associated with the aromatic hydrocarbon metabolism. And MagLsBC amendment significantly increased the aromatic compounds degradation function, which was not observed in other treatments, and methanogenesis function. Further analysis revealed that the enhanced microbial responses in MagLsBC amended sediment were related with the high conductivity of MagLsBC. These results give the new insights into the effect of magnetic carbon materials on microbial community and organic pollutants degradation function during the long period amendment, demonstrating MagLsBC as an effective material with the biostimulation potential for the risk control of PAHs contamination.

Graphene oxide functionalized with nano hydroxyapatite for the efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution

Water contamination caused by radionuclides is a major environmental issue. Uranium (U) belongs to the actinide group of elements. Hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) is radioactively and chemically harmful and highly mobile in the environment and wastewater stream. Therefore, developing highly efficient materials for minimizing the environmental impact of U(VI) is essential. To achieve this goal, we successfully synthesized a novel material, namely graphene oxide (GO)/hydroxyapatite (HAP), by directly assembling GO and HAP through a facile hydrothermal method, which exhibits effective U(VI) removal and immobilization. The GO/HAP composite has an outstanding sorption capacity for U(VI) (i.e., 373.00 mg/g) within 5 min at a pH of 3.0. The parameters from thermodynamic analysis indicated that the GO/HAP composite absorbed U(VI) through a process of spontaneous and exothermic adsorption. XPS, XRD, and FT-IR results revealed that the composite's phosphate group was mainly responsible for U(VI) retention and incorporation. The GO/HAP composite's enhanced U(VI) sorption capacity is most likely ascribed to the synergistic effect after functionalizing with nano HAP. The current findings may greatly facilitate the creation of rational design strategies to develop highly efficient materials that can treat radioactive wastewater.

Long-term impact of accidental pollution on the distribution and risks of metals and metalloids in the sediment of the Longjiang River, China

In January 2012, a serious accident polluted the Longjiang River with high concentrations of cadmium (Cd) and other concomitant metals and metalloids in the water. After emergency treatment (i.e., the addition of coagulants), these metals and metalloids were transferred from the water into the sediment through precipitation of the flocculent materials produced. In this study, the long-term distribution of six metals and metalloids in the sediment of the Longjiang River was investigated and their ecological risks were assessed. Approximately 1 year after the accident (i.e., late 2012), the average Cd content in the sediment of the affected sites decreased to 25.6 ± 19.5 mg/kg, which was 8 times higher than that of 3.16 ± 3.18 mg/kg in the upstream reference sites. In 2016 and 2017, the average Cd content in the sediment of the affected sites further decreased to 4.91 ± 2.23 and 6.27 ± 4.27 mg/kg, respectively. Compared with late 2012, the amounts of Zn, Pb, and Cu obviously decreased in 2016 and 2017, whereas there were no obvious differences in the As and Hg amounts during 3 years considered. Among metals and metalloids, the average contribution of Cd to the potential ecological risk index (RI) was 90%, 69%, and 70% in the affected areas in 2012, 2016, and 2017, respectively, suggesting that Cd was the most important factor affecting the ecological risk of metals in the Longjiang River. It should be noted that the average contribution of Hg to RI in the affected areas increased from 8% in 2012 to 25% and 23% in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The sequence of contribution of six elements was Cd > Hg > As>Pb > Cu ≈ Zn. A high ecological risk of metals and metalloids was found in the sediments of two reservoirs, probably owing to the barrier effect of the dam. This study will be useful for the environmental management of rivers affected by accidental pollution of metals and metalloids.

Emerging risks of toxic metal(loid)s in soil-vegetables influenced by steel-making activities and isotopic source apportionment

Industrial activities tend to deteriorate adjacent agricultural lands due to accumulation of potentially toxic elements in soils and crops. However, better understanding of their distinctive source partitions and transfer process remains insufficient in steel-making area. The paper focuses on the pollution levels, health risks, and provenance identification of Tl, As, Pb, Cu, Ni, Co, Sb, Cd, Zn, Be, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Sn, and V in common vegetables from different farmlands near a steel-making plant. The results showed that the Tl, As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Mn were of high-level contamination in soils and generally above the maximum permissible level (MPL). Calculation using hazard quotients (HQ) exhibited that consumption of the studied vegetables may entail significant health risks to residents, especially for children, resulting from the elevated contents of Tl, As and associated toxic elements. Calculation by binary mixing model using Pb isotopic compositions suggested that steel-making activities contributed to 35-80% of the contamination of Pb and As in vegetables. It is necessary to adopt appropriate remediation measures to mitigate the farmland contamination and ensure the food safety of the agricultural products.

Mitigation of arsenic accumulation in arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) using Fe/Al/Zn impregnated biochar composites

Arsenic (As) contamination of aquatic and soil environments is a global concern, highlighting the importance of As removal via high-efficiency and low-cost removal technologies. In the present study, novel trimetallic biochar was developed through pyrolyzing corn straw impregnated with inexpensive metal Fe/Al/Zn (hydr)oxides. The results of SEM, FTIR, and XRD verified the formation of metal oxyhydroxides on the surface of the modified biochars, and the modification increased the specific surface area (SSA), total pore volume (TPV), and surface charge of the Fe/Al/Zn (hydr)oxides modified biochar (FAZ-CB). Compared with the original biochar, higher sorption rates and capacities was observed for the FAZ-CB. The maximum As (V) adsorption capacities of FAZ-CB reached 82.9 mg g^-1. A pot experiment showed that application of FAZ-CB decreased bioavailable As fractions in the red soil significantly reduced the uptake of As by arugula in edible part and root (42.6 and 56.8%, respectively). The present study demonstrated the superiority of FAZ-CB in the As(V) immobilization in red soil, suggesting that it is a promising candidate for practical application for As immobilization. Therefore, FAZ-CB can be used as a promising functionalized biochar to remediate As contaminated red soil.

Extensive removal of thallium by graphene oxide functionalized with aza-crown ether

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal, and its pollution and remediation in aquatic environments has attracted considerable attention. To reduce or remove Tl pollution in the environment, various strategies have been applied. Graphene oxide (GO) has abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, indicating its high application potential for pollution remediation via methods involving binding to metal ions or positively charged organic molecules or electrostatic interaction and coordination. However, the adsorption of Tl to GO occurs via physical adsorption, for which the adsorption efficiency is low. Therefore, herein, we report a new method to effectively remove Tl pollution in water. We combined GO with aza-crown ether, which enhanced the electronegativity and ability to bind metal ions. The functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) demonstrated high efficiency through a wide pH gradient of 5-10, with a dominant Tl(i) adsorption capacity (112.21 mg g-1) based on the Langmuir model (pH 9.0, adsorbent concentration of 0.8 g L-1). The adsorption of Tl(i) during removal fit a pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. The mechanisms of Tl removal involve physical and chemical adsorption. In summary, our study provides a new method for the detection and treatment of Tl-containing wastewater by using FGO.

Distribution patterns and sources of heavy metals in soils from an industry undeveloped city in Southern China

The accumulations of heavy metals in urban soils are derived from natural parent materials and complex anthropogenic emission sources. This paper investigated metal contamination in urban soils at an industry undeveloped city (Haikou) in southern China, an ideal place to quantitatively assess the contribution of metals from different sources. The concentrations of most heavy metals in the urban soils of Haikou were much lower than their guideline values and that of those from other big cities in China. In contrast, the chemical speciation of metals in this study was similar to those from other cities. The spatial distributions of heavy metals and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that basaltic parent materials, traffic emissions, and coal combustion were the main factors controlling the distribution of metals in the soils. The Pb isotope signatures of the Haikou soils were greatly different from those of the Beijing and Shanghai soils, but similar to those of the Guangzhou soils, suggesting the common sources of Pb in southern China cities. The results of ternary mixing model of Pb isotopes showed that the contributions of Pb from natural background, coal combustion and traffic emission sources were 5.3-82.4% (mean: 39.7 ± 21.1%), 0-85.7% (mean: 25.5 ± 24.6%), and 1.9-64% (mean: 34.8 ± 22.9%), respectively. This suggests that traffic emission is still the most important anthropogenic source of Pb in Haikou.

Low-dose biochar added to sediment improves water quality and promotes the growth of submerged macrophytes

Biochar is a good adsorbent for water pollutants. However, the effects of biochar on aquatic organisms are not well understood. In this study, different amounts of biochar (CK, 0 mg/g; T1, 10 mg/g; T2, 30 mg/g) were added to sediment to study changes in water quality and its impact on three submerged macrophytes (Hydrilla verticillata, Vallisneria natans, and Ceratophyllum demersum) and the sediment microbial community. The results indicated that biochar treatments significantly increased the water pH and conductivity. Compared with the initial values, the total phosphorus (P) contents in the water of the CK, T1, and T2 treatments decreased by 78.5%, 95.0%, and 58.3%, respectively, while the total nitrogen contents increased by 26.26%, -5.81%, and 19.70%, respectively. Compared with those in CK, the relative growth rates of H. verticillata, V. natans, and C. demersum in T1 increased by 28.4%, 163.1%, and 61.3%, respectively, while those in T2 showed no significant difference except that the growth rates of H. verticillata decreased by 17.7%. The P contents of the three submerged macrophytes increased with the increase of biochar addition, except that there was no significant difference between T2 and CK for H. verticillata. Biochar treatments reduced the biomass of total microbial, bacterial, and fungal phospholipid fatty acids in the sediment for H. verticillata and V. natans, and they increased fungal: bacterial ratios in the low-dose biochar treatments for V. natans and C. demersum. This study demonstrates that the addition of biochar to sediment significantly increased the pH and conductivity, and decreased total P contents in the water. Low-dose biochar treatments were more beneficial for water quality improvements and the growth of submerged macrophytes than high-dose biochar.

Health risks of metal(loid)s in maize (Zea mays L.) in an artisanal zinc smelting zone and source fingerprinting by lead isotope

Metal(loid) contamination caused by industrial activities in agricultural soils has become a universal environmental and food safety concern. This study revealed the contamination, pathway, and source contribution of metal(loid)s such as lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in maize and soils in different residential areas impacted by long-term historical artisanal zinc smelting activities from Southwest China. Results revealed that the soils were contaminated heavily by metals like Pb, Zn and Cd, with contents of 40-14,280, 150-47,020 and 1.28-61.7 mg/kg, respectively. Hazard quotients of food uptake for Pb, Cd and Cr in maize grains were extremely high for residents, in particular for the children. To trace the sources of metal health risk, lead isotope fingerprinting and binary mixing modeling were applied. It indicated that the anthropogenic activities contributed over 80% to the Pb contamination in maize grains. The findings highlighted warning levels of health risks to the residents in consuming maize grains in the historical artisanal PbZn smelting area. Therefore, an effective strategy including pollution source control and remediation measures must be taken to improve the soil quality and guarantee food safety around the historical smelting areas likewise.

Quantitative isotopic fingerprinting of thallium associated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in fluvial sediment cores with multiple anthropogenic sources

Thallium (Tl) is a dispersed trace metal showing remarkable toxicity. Various anthropogenic activities may generate Tl contamination in river sediments, posing tremendous risks to aquatic life and human health. This paper aimed to provide insight into the vertical distribution, risk assessment and source tracing of Tl and other potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (lead, cadmium, zinc and copper) in three representative sediment cores from a riverine catchment impacted by multiple anthropogenic activities (such as steel-making and Pb-Zn smelting). The results showed high accumulations of Tl combined with associated PTEs in the depth profiles. Calculations according to three risk assessment methods by enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (I_geo) and the potential ecological risk index (PERI) all indicated a significant contamination by Tl in all the sediments. Furthermore, lead isotopes were analyzed to fingerprint the contamination sources and to calculate their quantitative contributions to the sediments using the IsoSource software. The results indicated that a steel-making plant was the most important contamination source (∼56%), followed by a Pb-Zn smelter (∼20%). The natural parental bedrock was found to contribute ∼24%. The findings highlight the importance of including multiple anthropogenic sources for quantitative fingerprinting of Tl and related metals by the lead isotopic approach in complicated environmental systems.

Transport of Tl(I) in water-saturated porous media: Role of carbonate, phosphate and macromolecular organic matter

Understanding the transport behaviors of thallium (Tl) in porous media is of considerable interest for both natural soils and artificial filtration removal of Tl. In this context, the transport behaviors of Tl(I) in water-saturated sand columns under different conditions were systematically investigated. It was found that, in addition to the effects of pH and ionic strength (IS), the transport of Tl(I) depended on the carbonate, phosphate and macromolecular organic matter as well. Tl(I) broken the columns more difficultly under higher pH and lower IS conditions. Moreover, the adsorption of carbonate and phosphate on sand surfaces may increase the retention of Tl(I) in columns. As for macromolecular organic matter, humic acid (HA) facilitated Tl(I) transport, especially under neutral and alkaline conditions (7.0 and 9.8), which was possibly associated with Tl-complexes formation and competed adsorption between Tl(I) and HA. However, bovine serum albumin (BSA) impeded Tl(I) transport for the reason that deposited BSA might provide more adsorption sites for Tl(I), though Tl(I) had a slight effect on BSA transport. In order to evaluate the mechanisms of transport, a dual-sites non-equilibrium model was applied to fit the breakthrough curves of Tl(I). Retardation factor (R) values of individual Tl(I) transport from model calculations were found to be higher than that of Tl(I) transport with HA and lower than that of Tl(I) transport with BSA. The fraction of instantaneous sorption sites (β) was found to decrease with increasing pH, implying nonequilibrium sorption is a main sorption mechanism of Tl(I) with pH increasing. The fundamental data obtained herein demonstrated that carbonate, phosphate and macromolecular organic matter significantly influenced the Tl(I) migration and could lead to the leaking or bindings of Tl(I) at Tl-occurring sites.

Facile modification of graphene oxide and its application for the aqueous uranyl ion sequestration: Insights on the mechanism

Graphene oxide (GO) has been proved with favorable affinity to U(VI), while some drawbacks such as poor dispersity and low adsorption performance limit its application. Herein, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) modified graphene oxide (MGO) composites were successfully fabricated, characterized and compared with graphene oxide (GO) in the sequestration of U(VI) in aqueous solutions. The results showed that maximum adsorption rate of MGO (99.21%) was obviously higher than that of GO (66.51%) under the same initial condition. Simultaneous introduction of C-H and NO coupled with the enhanced dispersity of GO after modification were mainly responsible for the updated performance verified with multiple characterization techniques. Based on the results of kinetics and isotherms investigations, the experimental data were best described by Pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Redlich-Peterson isotherm model. The results of ΔH, ΔS and ΔG show that adsorptive behaviors of uranyl ion on MGO are endothermic and spontaneous. The study provides a feasible alternative to the chemical modification of GO and enhancing the performance towards uranyl ion removal from solution.
