Abstract
Revisional metabolic and bariatric surgery (RMBS) presents unique challenges in addressing weight loss failure or complications arising from initial bariatric procedures. This review aims to explore the complexities and solutions associated with revisional bariatric procedures comprehensively, offering insights into the evolving terrain of metabolic and bariatric surgery. A literature review is conducted to identify pertinent studies and expert opinions regarding RMBS. Methodological approaches, patient selection criteria, surgical techniques, preoperative assessments, and postoperative management strategies are synthesized to provide a comprehensive overview of current practices and advancements in the field, including institutional protocols. This review synthesizes key findings regarding the challenges encountered in RMBS, including the underlying causes of primary procedure failure, anatomical complexities, technical considerations, and assessments of surgical outcomes. Additionally, patient outcomes, complication rates, and long-term success are presented, along with institutional approaches to patient assessment and procedure selection. This review provides valuable insights for clinicians grappling with the complexities of RMBS. A comprehensive understanding of patient selection, surgical techniques, preoperative management, and postoperative care is crucial for enhancing outcomes and ensuring patient satisfaction in the field of metabolic bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Background Studies have shown that the disease burden of anaemia varies globally, yet they have not yet determined its exact extent in East Asian countries specifically. We thus aimed to investigate the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) due to anaemia from 1990 to 2021 in China, Japan, and South Korea. Methods We extracted the prevalence and YLDs with their age-standardised rates (ASRs) in China, Japan, and South Korea from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, stratified by sex, age, and causes. We then examined the temporal trend of anaemia burden from 1990 to 2021 using joinpoint analysis and the association of anaemia burden with the Human Development Index and Universal Health Index through Spearman's correlation analysis. Results In 2021, anaemia affected 136 million people in China (95% uncertainty interval (UI) = 131, 141), with ASRs of prevalence of 8.9% (95% UI = 8.6, 9.3), and accounted for 3.0 million YLDs (95% UI = 2.0, 4.4). It affected 13.6 million people in Japan (95% UI = 11.8, 16.0), with ASRs of prevalence of 7.4% (95% UI = 6.1, 9.0), and caused 181 thousand YLDs (95% UI = 108, 282). It also affected 2.7 million individuals in South Korea (95% UI = 2.4, 3.0), with ASRs of prevalence of 5.2% (95% UI = 4.6, 5.7), and led to 34 thousand YLDs (95% UI = 22, 55). We observed a significant gender discrepancy in the anaemia burden in these three countries, with the prevalence and YLD rates in women being almost twice as high as those in men. Moreover, the peak age of the anaemia burden shifted toward higher age groups in all three countries, particularly in Japan. Chronic kidney disease was responsible for a growing share of anaemia cases and YLDs, especially in adults aged more than 60 years in Japan and South Korea. Haemoglobinopathies were another noticeable cause of anaemia in China, though dietary iron deficiency remained the leading cause. Both socioeconomic development and essential health service coverage showed negative associations with the anaemia burden in the three countries in the past three decades, though with differential patterns. Conclusions Anaemia remains a major public health issue in China, Japan, and South Korea; targeted surveillance and interventions are recommended for high-risk populations and cause-specific anaemia.

Abstract
Childhood anemia is a significant global public health problem. It influences the physical and cognitive development, as well as immunity of affected children. This in turn leads to poor academic performance, low working potential, and increased morbidity and mortality. There is limited facility-based data on the magnitude and predictors of anemia among under-five children. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of anemia among under-five children attending public Hospitals in Harari Regional State, eastern Ethiopia. Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital and Jugal Hospital from July 1, 2022, to August 31, 2022. A total of 330 under-five children were involved by systematic random sampling technique. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and other possible factors were collected through face-to-face interviews with children's parents/legal guardians. Four milliliters of venous blood samples were collected for a complete blood cell count. Collected data were checked for completeness, entered into Epi-Data Statistical Software Version 4.6, and exported into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25 for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression was conducted and P < .05 were considered statistically significant. The overall prevalence of anemia was 33% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 27.9%-37.9%). Age of children 6 to 11 months (adjusted odd ratio [AOR] = 3.94, 95% CI: 1.55-10.01) and 12 to 23 months (AOR = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.15-7.43), no maternal education (AOR = 4.34, 95% CI: 1.53-12.35), not exclusively breastfeeding (AOR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.11-3.52), being severely stunted (AOR = 3.39, 95 CI: 1.70-6.75), and underweight (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.12-3.87) were significantly associated with anemia among under-five children. In this study, anemia among under-five children is a moderate public health problem. This study revealed that young child age, maternal education level, early initiation of complementary feeding, and child undernutrition were factors associated with anemia. Thus, efforts should be made to improve the child's nutritional status as well as enhance maternal awareness of nutrition and child-feeding practice through health education. Regular childhood nutritional screening and appropriate intervention for malnutrition are needed. Besides, further studies assessing serum micronutrient levels should be conducted to differentiate the specific cause and type of anemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the independent risk factors for a decreased hemoglobin level in gastric cancer patients undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on 142 gastric cancer patients who received chemotherapy between May 2017 and May 2021 at the Gansu Provincial Cancer Hospital. All patients were subjected to the same regimen of adjuvant chemotherapy combining platinum/taxane and fluorouracil. The correlation between patients' clinicopathological features and the decreased hemoglobin during adjuvant chemotherapy was analyzed. Logistic and LASSO regression analyses were employed to screen for independent risk factors for decreased hemoglobin during adjuvant chemotherapy. RESULTS Univariate analysis revealed that intraoperative bleeding, pre-chemotherapy anemia, and hypoalbuminemia were risk factors for the decreased hemoglobin in patients during adjuvant chemotherapy (all P < 0.05). Both logistic and LASSO regression analyses corroborated these factors as influential factors in the decrease of hemoglobin (P < 0.05). In addition, both logistic and LASSO regression models demonstrated similar performance in this aspect. The nomogram model was subjected to internal validation, resulting in a C-index of 0.712 (0.629-0.796). The calibration curves exhibited satisfactory alignment with the ideal curve. CONCLUSION Intraoperative blood loss, pre-chemotherapy anemia, and hypoalbuminemia are independent risk factors for hemoglobin reduction following chemotherapy. Moreover, both the logistic and LASSO regression models exhibited equivalent performance in this context. These findings bear substantial clinical implications, aiding physicians in the management of anemia in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Abstract
Background Nutritional deficiencies and its consequences such as anaemia are frequent among pregnant women residing in under resource settings. Hence, this study sought to investigate specific dietary micronutrient inadequacy and its effect on maternal haemoglobin levels. Methods This institution based cross-sectional survey enrolled 1,014 consenting pregnant women consecutively. Data on socio-demographic, economic and antenatal characteristics were recorded using a structured questionnaire. Minimum dietary diversity for women (MDD-W) was assessed using the 24-h recall method and haemoglobin (Hb) concentration (g/dL) determined using a portable Hb metre. Significant levels between associations was set at p < 0.05. Results Among those enrolled, 40.9% were anaemic while 89.6% had inadequate dietary nutrient intake. In addition, uptake of blood supplements, haem iron, plant and animal-based foods rich in vitamin A were 71.5, 86.2, 35.5 and 12.6%, respectively. Moreover, anaemia prevalence was significantly (p < 0.05) lower in women who took iron-folic acid along with food groups rich in haem iron (38.5%) or both plant and animal vitamin A (29.0%). Besides, mean maternal Hb levels was significantly (p < 0.001) higher in women who consumed haem iron (11.08 ± 1.35) and vitamin A food groups (11.34 ± 1.30) when compared with their counterparts who did not consume haem iron (10.54 ± 1.19) and vitamin A food groups (10.74 ± 1.31). Conclusion Dietary uptake of foods rich in haem-iron and vitamin A significantly improves Hb levels in Cameroonian pregnant women. Our findings underscore the importance of improving maternal nutritional awareness and counselling during antenatal period to reduce the anaemia burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In many low-income countries, iron deficiency (ID) and its anemia (IDA) pose significant health challenges, particularly among females and girls. Finding sustainable and effective solutions to address this issue is critical. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of incorporating iron-fortified lentils (IFLs) into the diets of rural Bangladeshi adolescent girls on their body iron (Fe) status. METHODS A community-based, double-blind, cluster-randomized controlled trial involved n = 1195 girls aged 10-17 y. A total of 48 adolescent clubs (n = ∼27 girls each) were randomized into 3 groups: 1) 200 g cooked IFLs, 2) 200 g cooked noniron-fortified lentils (NIFLs), and 3) a control group with no lentils (usual dietary intake). The intervention, administered 5 days a week for 85 feeding days, provided ∼8.625 mg Fe from each serving of IFLs and 2.625 mg from NIFLs. Blood samples collected at baseline, midpoint (42 feeding days), and endpoint (85 feeding days) assessed key Fe and inflammation biomarkers. Statistical analyses were filtered for inflammation. RESULTS Although all groups experienced a decline in Fe status over time, the IFL group exhibited a significantly reduced decline in serum ferritin (sFer -7.2 μg/L), and total body iron (TBI -0.48 mg/kg) level compared with NIFL (sFer -14.3 μg/L and TBI -1.36 mg/kg) and usual intake group (sFer -12.8 μg/L and TBI -1.33 mg/kg). Additionally, those in the IFL group had a 57% reduced risk of developing clinical ID (sFer <15 μg/L) compared with the usual intake group. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that incorporating IFLs into the diet can help mitigate a decline in sFer, indicating a positive impact on the body Fe status of adolescent girls. This research underscores the potential role of fortified foods in addressing ID and IDA in vulnerable populations, emphasizing the significance of food-based interventions in public health. Abstract
Childhood undernutrition is a major issue in low- and middle-income countries, affecting the health, well-being, and educational outcomes of schoolchildren. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of stunting, wasting, and underweight among schoolchildren in peri-urban areas in the south-eastern part of Tanzania. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 930 children aged 6-12 years from four primary schools from July to August 2019. The WHO Anthro Survey Analyzer was employed to estimate the prevalence of stunting, wasting, and underweight, while logistic regression analyses examined sociodemographic background, malaria infection, anaemia, anthropometric measures, and dietary diversity score as potential factors. The prevalence of stunting, wasting, underweight, overweight, and obesity was 11.8%, 4.3%, 3.9%, 11.1%, and 2.0%, respectively. Overall, 1.5% of the children had malaria, as determined by rapid diagnostic tests, and 0.4% had severe anaemia. Univariate analysis indicated higher odds of undernutrition among children aged 9-12 compared to their younger peers. Stunting was more common among children with low and medium dietary diversity. Anaemia was found in 11.2% of schoolchildren, and severe anaemia was associated with wasting. Multivariate analysis revealed that age and low dietary diversity were significantly associated with undernutrition. These findings emphasise the need for school-based health and nutrition programmes targeting children beyond the age of 5 to improve their nutritional status and mitigate potential adverse effects on health, cognition, and academic achievement. Regular assessment of the nutritional status of schoolchildren is warranted.

Abstract
Anemia in breastfeeding women is a neglected global health issue with significant implications for maternal and child health. Despite its widespread occurrence and adverse effects, this problem remains largely unknown and overlooked on the global health agenda. Despite efforts to improve health access coverage and provide iron and folic acid supplementation, anemia persists. This underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address the problem. Urgent action must be taken to prioritize education and awareness campaigns, ensure access to nutritious food, and enhance healthcare services. Education programs should focus on promoting iron-rich diets, dispelling cultural myths, and providing practical guidance. Improving healthcare services requires increasing availability, ensuring a consistent supply of iron supplements, and providing adequate training for healthcare providers. A successful implementation relies on a strong collaboration between the government, healthcare providers, and community. It is crucial that we acknowledge that high coverage alone is insufficient for solving the issue, emphasizing the importance of targeted interventions and a strategic implementation. By adopting a comprehensive approach and addressing the underlying causes of anemia, Indonesia can make significant progress in reducing its prevalence and improving the overall health of its population, particularly among breastfeeding women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia is a global public health problem, principally affecting young children and reproductive-age mothers. Although anemia is a main public health concern in low-income countries, there is no evidence about its prevalence and associated factors among women of reproductive age in Liberia. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence and associated factors of anemia among women of reproductive age in Liberia. METHODS We used the data extracted from the fifth Liberia Demographic and Health Survey (LDHS-V) that were carried out between October 2019 and February 2020. The sample was chosen using a stratified two-stage cluster sampling procedure. Overall weighted samples of 4027 women of reproductive age were used in the analysis. Data weighting was carried out to obtain reliable estimates and standard errors as well as to restore the representativeness of the data. Stata version 14 software was used for data extraction, coding, and analysis. We used multilevel analysis to identify the significant factors associated with anemia among women of reproductive age. RESULTS The prevalence of anemia among women of reproductive age in Liberia was 44.51 (95% CI: 42.97-46.04). From these, about 23.10% of women of reproductive age were mildly anemic, 20.63% were moderately anemic and 0.78% was severely anemic. In multivariable analysis; women with the groups of 20-24 years (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.56, 0.92), 25-29 years (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.77), 30-34 years (AOR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.83), 35-39 years (AOR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.79), 40-44 years (AOR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.43,0.87), 45-49 years (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.39,0.82), overweight (AOR = 0.83; 95% CI: 0.70, 0.98), obese (AOR = 0.72; 95% CI: 0.58, 0.88), using modern contraceptive methods (AOR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.52, 0.72), and being from the Northcentral region (AOR = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.43, 0.72) were significantly associated with lower odds of anemia. However, being pregnant (AOR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.73) and having higher parity (3 children or more) (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.93) were significantly associated with higher odds of anemia. CONCLUSION In the present study, the prevalence of anemia in women of reproductive age was relatively high. Therefore, it is better to provide special emphasis on high-risk groups such as pregnant and multiparous women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low haemoglobin level in children is linked with short-term and long-term consequences including developmental delay. Globally, over half of the children under the age of five years had low haemoglobin concentration. However, there is limited research on the prevalence and determinants of normal haemoglobin concentration among under-five children in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVE To assess determinants of normal haemoglobin concentration among under-five children in SSA. DESIGN Cross-sectional study design using a positive deviance approach SETTING: 33 SSA countries. PARTICIPANTS 129 408 children aged 6-59 months PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: A multilevel Poisson regression model with robust variance was fitted to identify determinants of normal haemoglobin concentration. An adjusted prevalence ratio with a 95% CI was reported to declare the statistical significance. RESULT The pooled prevalence of normal haemoglobin concentration among under-five children in SSA was 34.9% (95% CI: 34.6% to 35.1%). High maternal education, middle and rich household wealth, female child, frequent antenatal care visits, non-anaemic mothers, taking anthelmintic drugs and normal nutritional status were associated with increased odds of normal haemoglobin concentration. On the other hand, higher birth order, having fever and diarrhoea, rural residence were associated with lower odds of normal haemoglobin levels. CONCLUSION According to our finding, only four out of 10 under-five children in SSA had a normal haemoglobin level. This finding proved that anaemia among children in SSA remains a serious public health concern. Therefore, improving maternal education, provision of drugs for an intestinal parasite and early detection and treatment of maternal anaemia, febrile illness and diarrhoeal disease is important.

Abstract
The consumption of unsafe water in rural areas is a real public health problem in developing countries. This situation mainly affects children under five years of age and causes several deaths and many cases of malnutrition every year. The objective of this study was to evaluate and optimize the capacity of four local plant extracts in the potabilization of unsafe water. Thus, Moringa oleifera and Boscia senegalensis seeds, or Aloe vera and Opuntia ficus-indica mucilages were prepared in a solution and applied during a jar test as biocoagulants and bioflocculants on three raw water samples of 82.3 NTU, 549.8 NTU and 796.9 NTU. After treatment results showed that 0.9 g/L of Moringa biocoagulant or 1 g/L of Boscia biocoagulant applied with 0.4 mL of Aloe vera bioflocculant or 0.6 mL of Opuntia ficus-indica bioflocculant reduced the turbidity of each water sample to values less than 5 NTU after only 15 min of decanting. Moreover, the sanitary quality of the water treated by these different extracts showed a perfect conformity of the physicochemical and microbiological parameters with the standards of acceptability in drinking water decreed by the World Health Organization. Thus, the application of these local plant extracts has made it possible to considerably improve the quality of unsafe water in record time. Their popularization could be an alternative in the fight against malnutrition related to the consumption of unsafe water, especially in rural areas.

Abstract
Exposure to pathogens throughout a lifetime influences immunity and organ function. Here, we explore how the systemic host-response to bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI) induces tissue-specific alterations to the mammary gland. Utilizing a combination of histological tissue analysis, single cell transcriptomics, and flow cytometry, we identify that mammary tissue from UTI-bearing mice displays collagen deposition, enlarged ductal structures, ductal hyperplasia with atypical epithelial transcriptomes and altered immune composition. Bacterial cells are absent in the mammary tissue and blood of UTI-bearing mice, therefore, alterations to the distal mammary tissue are mediated by the systemic host response to local infection. Furthermore, broad spectrum antibiotic treatment resolves the infection and restores mammary cellular and tissue homeostasis. Systemically, unresolved UTI correlates with increased plasma levels of the metalloproteinase inhibitor, TIMP1, which controls extracellular matrix remodeling and neutrophil function. Treatment of nulliparous and post-lactation UTI-bearing female mice with a TIMP1 neutralizing antibody, restores mammary tissue normal homeostasis, thus providing evidence for a link between the systemic host response during UTI and mammary gland alterations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE. To describe the iron status profile and to propose hemoglobin adjustment factors for altitude for children aged 6 to 8 months in Lima, Arequipa, Cusco and Puno. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Cross-sectional study in children aged 6 to 8 months from four cities. We measured hemoglobin and other iron biomarkers, C-reactive protein (CRP), among others. To estimate the adjustment equation, we applied an exponential regression. We excluded children with iron deficiency (ID) and/or inflammation. RESULTS. The proportions of ID were higher in Puno and Arequipa, while inflammation did not exceed 19% in any of the cities. Hemoglobin showed an exponential increase at higher altitude. The adjustment equation was: 10.34249 x (1.00007 ^ Alt). CONCLUSIONS. Children residing in Arequipa and Puno showed higher rates of ID and lower iron reserves; furthermore, the increase in hemoglobin by altitude was exponential, showing the need to adjust hemoglobin at altitude.

Abstract
The burden of micronutrient malnutrition is high among women of reproductive age (WRA) in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined the dietary quality and associated factors for WRA in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, and Tanzania. Data were collected from women aged 15-49 years using representative Diet Quality Questionnaire surveys. The Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W), All-5 (key food group) consumption, noncommunicable disease risk (NCD-Risk), and Global Dietary Recommendation (GDR) indicators were assessed. Participants included N = 16,584 women [Cameroon: N = 2073; Côte d'Ivoire: N = 242; Kenya: N = 864; Adamawa State (Nigeria): N = 1283; Benue State (Nigeria): N = 1047; Nasarawa State (Nigeria): N = 1151; Senegal: N = 7232; Tanzania: N = 2692]. The MDD-W ranged from 43.0% in Tanzania to 81.4% in Côte d'Ivoire and was higher in urban, compared to rural, areas in Cameroon, Kenya, Nasarawa, Senegal, and Tanzania (p < 0.001). Increased education and wealth were positively associated with MDD-W in Kenya, Benue, Senegal, and Tanzania. Fewer than half of all women attained All-5 consumption. NCD-Risk scores ranged from 1.13 (95% CI: 1.08, 1.17) in Tanzania to 2.28 (95% CI: 2.16, 2.40) in Nasarawa, and women's GDR scores ranged from 10.47 (95% CI: 10.40, 10.54) in Cameroon to 11.45 (95% CI: 11.25, 11.64) in Côte d'Ivoire. Our findings highlight key aspects of women's diets in sub-Saharan African settings to enable greater awareness and more targeted responses to the specific areas needing the most improvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia is a global public health problem among women of reproductive age group, especially in developing countries, which affect health, social and economic development that result in low physical activity, increased maternal morbidity and mortality and adverse neonatal outcome especially those with severe anemia. However, there is limited reliable and updated data on the spatial variations of anemia and its associated factors among reproductive-age women in Nigeria. METHODS Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from the recent Nigeria malaria indicators survey datasets. The study comprised a total of 14,476 reproductive-age women. Spatial and multilevel mixed effect analysis on determinants factors of anemia among reproductive age women in Nigeria evidenced by the recent Nigerian malaria indicators survey. Finally, the percentage and odd ratio, its 95% confidence intervals, and the result of spatial analysis were reported. RESULT This study includes a total weighted sample of 14,476 reproductive-age women from the Nigeria malaria indicators survey. The prevalence of anemia was 24.6% in Ethiopia. Being between the age range of 30-34 years [AOR: 0.217, 95% CI (0.171, 0.274)], Attending higher education [AOR: 0.848, 95%CI (0.740, 0.972)] and being male headed household [AOR: 0.540, 95% CI (0.471, 0.620)] were protective for anemia. On the other hand being poorest [AOR: 1.542 95%CI (1.299, 1.830)] and being listening radio less than once a week [AOR: 1.013, 95% CI (0.908, 1.131)] were risk for anemia. CONCLUSION In this study Individual level factors were associated with anemia and also there were spatial variations in anemia across the region among reproductive-age women. Empowering women to have better educational status, improving the wealth index, and promoting education about prevention and control strategies of anemia through media especially in developing regions were the key factors to reduce anemia among reproductive age women in Nigeria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although obese patients seem to be susceptible to chronic diseases, obesity paradox has been observed in the field of vascular surgery, in which many previous studies have reported that overweight patients have good postoperative outcomes and underweight patients have poor postoperative outcomes. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the impact of body mass index (BMI) and serum albumin levels, which are evaluated as indicators of nutritional status, on outcomes of open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. METHODS We reviewed the vascular surgery database of a single tertiary referral center for all patients who underwent open AAA repair due to degenerative etiology from 1996 to 2021. To analyze the effect of BMI, patients were classified into 4 groups according to the Asian-Pacific classification of BMI: underweight (UW) (<18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (NW) (18.5-22.9 kg/m2), overweight (OW) (23-24.9 kg/m2), and obese (OB) (≥25 kg/m2). The χ2, Fisher's exact, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare demographics, comorbidities, radiologic findings, surgical details, and 1-year mortality rates between the 4 groups. We also compared the preoperative serum albumin levels of each group to assess nutritional status indirectly. Cox's proportional hazards model was performed to determine factors associated with mortality. A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed, and the differences were analyzed by a log-rank test. We did not perform an analysis for 30-day mortality because cases of 30-day mortality in UW patients were rare due to the unbalanced distribution of the number of patients in the 4 groups. RESULTS Among a total of 678 patients, 22 were classified as UW (3.2%), 200 as NW (29.5%), 183 as OW (27.1%), and 273 as OB (40.1%). The median age was 70 (64-75) years and 577 of 678 (85.1%) patients were male gender. Higher serum albumin level was associated with decreased 1-year mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.15-0.63; P = 0.001). UW patients had a higher 1-year mortality rate than NW patients (HR, 3.67; 95% CI, 1.02-13.18; P = 0.046). OB patients had a lower overall mortality rate than NW patients (HR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.53-1; P = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Low BMI (<18.5 kg/m2) and low serum albumin level were associated with poor 1-year survival after elective open AAA repair. These patients also need more careful preoperative intervention, like weight gain or nutritional support, for better outcomes. The obesity paradox existed in our study; high BMI (≥25 kg/m2) was associated with better overall survival after elective open AAA repair.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute blood loss anemia is the most common form of anemia and often results from traumatic injuries or gastrointestinal bleeding. There are limited studies analyzing outcomes associated with acute blood loss anemia in hospitalized patients. METHODS The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) was analyzed from 2010 to 2014 (n = 133,809). The impact of acute blood loss anemia on in-hospital mortality, length of stay (LOS), healthcare cost, and disposition was determined using regression modeling adjusted for age, gender, race, and comorbidities. RESULTS Hospitalized patients with acute blood loss anemia had significantly higher healthcare cost (adj OR 1.04; 95% CI: 1.04-1.05), greater lengths of stay (adj OR 1.18; 95% CI: 1.17-1.18), and were less likely to be discharged home compared to the general medical population (adj OR 0.27; 95% CI: 0.26-0.28). Acute blood loss anemia was associated with increased risk for mortality in unadjusted models (unadj 1.16; 95% CI: 1.12-1.20) but not in adjusted models (adj OR 0.91; 95% CI: 0.88-0.94). When analyzing comorbidities, a "muscle loss phenotype" had the strongest association with mortality in patients with acute blood loss anemia (adj OR 4.48; 95% CI: 4.35-4.61). The top five primary diagnostic codes associated with acute blood loss anemia were long bone fractures, GI bleeds, cardiac repair, sepsis, and OB/Gyn related causes. Sepsis had the highest association with mortality (18%, adj OR 2.59; 95% CI: 2.34-2.86) in those with acute blood loss anemia. CONCLUSIONS Acute blood loss anemia is associated with adverse outcomes in hospitalized patients.

Abstract
Background Primary hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder resulting from inadequate production of thyroid hormones. Anemia is a common condition that can occur in hypothyroidism. Anemia may occur due to nutrient deficiency, such as iron or vitamin B12 deficiency due to chronic disease in hypothyroidism. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the cause of anemia in hypothyroidism. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of anemia and its types in patients with primary hypothyroidism. Methods This was a prospective cross-sectional observational study conducted at the Department of Medicine, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, Karachi, Pakistan, using non-probability consecutive sampling. A total of 176 adults aged 18-65 years of either gender, newly diagnosed with primary hypothyroidism, or with any of its symptoms were included in the study. Patients already on anti-thyroid medication and with post-thyroidectomy hypothyroidism were excluded from the study. The duration of the study was 1.5 years, from January 2020 to July 2021. After ethical approval, written informed consent was obtained from each patient. Demographical data along with results of complete blood picture, including Hb and MCV for diagnosing anemia and its types were recorded on a pre-designed proforma. The chi-square test was applied keeping p < 0.05 as statistically significant. Results The mean age of the patients was 42.19 ± 8.43 years, with 59.66% (n = 105) females and 40.34% (n = 71) males. A total of 67% (n =118) patients were found to be anemic. Of these, 38.64% (n = 68) patients had normocytic anemia, 19.32% (n = 34) microcytic anemia, and 9.25% (n = 16) patients had macrocytic anemia; 56.34% (n = 40) males and 74.29% (n = 78) females were reported to be anemic (p = 0.01). Conclusion In our study, the frequency of anemia in patients with hypothyroidism was high, with normocytic anemia being the most common type. It is important to know the type of anemia in hypothyroidism, as normocytic anemia is due to the chronic disease process (anemia of chronic disease) and may not respond to nutrient supplementation. Conversely, microcytic anemia is commonly due to iron deficiency and macrocytic anemia is due to vitamin B12 deficiency and therefore, they require replacement therapy. In any case, it is important to identify and treat the underlying cause of anemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Concerns have been raised about the potential association between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)/serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and the risk of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), which may be influenced by the affinity of SSRIs/SNRIs for serotonin transporter. Thus, we assessed whether SSRIs/SNRIs with high-affinity for serotonin transporter are associated with AUB compared to SSRIs/SNRIs with low-affinity in non-pregnant women. METHODS Using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, we identified a cohort of women aged 15-24 years, newly prescribed a high- or low-affinity SSRI/SNRI between 1990 and 2019. Confounding was addressed using standardized morbidity ratio weighting. We used weighted Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) of AUB associated with high-affinity compared with low-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs. We assessed the risk of anemia as a secondary outcome. RESULTS The cohort included 156,307 users of high-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs and 102,631 users of low-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs. High-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs were not associated with an increased risk of AUB compared with low-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs (incidence rates: 46.3 versus 42.4 per 1000 person-years, respectively; HR 1.01, 95 % CI 0.93-1.09). Duration of use, age, and comorbidities did not modify the risk. However, high-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs were associated with an increased risk of anemia (HR 1.29, 95 % CI 1.04-1.61) compared with low-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs. LIMITATIONS Residual confounding may still be present. CONCLUSIONS The risk of AUB did not differ between high- and low-affinity SSRIs/SNRIs. However, the potential risk of anemia suggests the need for monitoring and further investigation of the risk of AUB with these medications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to illustrate the effect of malaria infection on red blood cell parameters in children and evaluate the diagnostic relevance of haematological parameters in predicting malaria. METHODS The studies were identified through databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus to retrieve related articles. Fourteen studies were selected by literature search based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a meta-analysis on different red blood cell parameters was performed. RESULTS Haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, and RBC count show statistically significant findings with p values of (<0.00001), (p<0.00001) and (p=0.0004), respectively. Other parameters like MCV, MCH, and MCHC show statistically non-significant results with p values of 0.21, 0.36, and 0.63, respectively. CONCLUSION Considering the above findings, the combination of haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, and RBC counts could be used as reliable parameters to predict the presence of infection and included in the diagnostic strategy for malaria in children.

Abstract
Artemether-lumefantrine (AL) is a highly effective and commonly used Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) for treating uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, including drug-resistant strains. However, ineffective regulatory systems in resource-limited settings can lead to the infiltration of poor-quality and counterfeit antimalarial medicines into the pharmaceutical supply chain, causing treatment failures, prolonged illness, and disease progression. The objective of the study was to assess the quality of selected brands of fixed-dose combination (FDC) AL tablets and suspensions marketed in Kumasi, Ghana. A total of fourteen brands of FDC AL medicines, comprising eight tablets and six suspensions were purchased from various retail pharmacy outlets in Kumasi, Ghana. All samples were subjected to thorough visual inspection as a quick means of checking quality through meticulous observation of the packaging or dosage form. The quality parameters of the tablets were determined using uniformity of weight, hardness, friability, and disintegration tests. Suspensions were assessed based on pH and compared with the British Pharmacopeia (BP) standard. The samples were then analyzed for drug content (assay) using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). All the tablet samples conformed to BP specification limits for uniformity of weight (deviation of less than ± 5%), hardness (4.0-10 kg/mm2), friability (<1%), and disintegration time (<15 minutes). The active pharmaceutical ingredients' quantitative assay demonstrated that all the tablets met the BP specifications (90-110%). The results of the pH studies showed that out of the six brands of suspension investigated, five (83.3%) were compliant with the official specification for pH, while one (16.7%) failed the requirement. Unlike the tablet brands, drug content analysis of the six suspensions showed that two (33.3%) were substandard. The artemether and lumefantrine contents in these failed suspensions were variable (artemether: 81.31%-116.76%; lumefantrine: 80.35%-99.71%). The study results indicate that most of the tested products met the required quality standards, demonstrating satisfactory drug content and other quality specifications. The presence of substandard drugs underscores the necessity for robust pharmacovigilance and surveillance systems to eliminate counterfeit and substandard drugs from the Ghanaian market.

Abstract
Background Malaria can lead to anemia, a condition marked by a reduction in red blood cells or lower than typical levels of hemoglobin. This condition mainly affects women and children and, in severe cases, can hinder the cognitive and motor development of children. It also poses significant risks for pregnant women and their unborn children. Case presentation An 18-month-old girl and her mother, referred from conflict-affected West Wollega, Ethiopia due to severe malaria, were admitted to Assosa General Hospital, Ethiopia, with critical health indicators. The daughter (case 1) had a hemoglobin level of 0.8 g/dL, a red blood cell count of 0.44 × 10^6u/L, an oxygen saturation of 90%, a body temperature of 36.6 °C, a heartbeat of 132 beats per minute, and a respiratory rate of 48 breaths per minute. She displayed signs of pale conjunctivitis and severe palmar paleness, and weighed 7 kg. The mother(case 2), aged 35, also had a history of severe malaria and presented with a critically low hemoglobin level of 2.5g/dL and a red blood cell count of 0.75 × 10^6u/L, with an oxygen saturation of 89%. Blood transfusion and malaria treatment were administered, and by the end of their hospital stay, both cases' symptoms had resolved, and they returned to normal baseline vital signs, including their hemoglobin levels. Conclusions Severely low hemoglobin levels, worsened by severe malaria, present a significant danger in cases of anemia. As far as I am aware, this might be the lowest hemoglobin level recorded. Promoting awareness, economic empowerment initiatives, alongside routine provision of iron supplements and Prompt malaria diagnosis and treatment to create a comprehensive approach that addresses the multifaceted challenges posed by anemia, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women of reproductive age (WRA) in developing countries are often at risk of micronutrient deficiencies due to inadequate intakes and excessive losses. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this trial is to assess the effectiveness of United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Antenatal Preparation-Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (UNIMMAP-MMS) versus iron-folic acid (IFA) among WRA in reducing anemia. METHODS Three parallel groups of WRA will participate in a community-based, individually randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled superiority trial. After consent, the sample of 375 mildly or moderately anemic women based on hemoglobin by Hemocue will be randomly assigned across two interventions and one control arm. Trial participants in intervention arms will receive UNIMMAP-MMS or IFA while those in the control arm will receive placebos twice a week for 17 weeks. The primary outcome will be a change in mean hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations. Outcome assessors and study participants will be blinded to the type of supplements and study arm. DISCUSSION The World Health Organization (WHO) added UNIMMAP-MMS to its essential medicine lists in 2021 but recommended rigorous study. Several factors in addition to inadequate intakes of iron and folic acid contribute to the high prevalence of anemia among WRA in the Somali region. The findings of this study will provide evidence on the effect of UNIMMAP-MMS and IFA on Hb concentrations and anemia prevalence among anemic WRA. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05682261. Abstract
Iron deficiency anaemia is still a global public health concern with the highest burden among children 6 to 23 months due to their rapid growth spurt exceeding breastmilk supply. Therefore, nutritional supply is a key source of iron to attain the required nutrients for better growth and development. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study done at Ishaka Adventist Hospital (IAH) and Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH) from April to July 2022. Participants were consecutively enrolled in the study. Structured questionnaires, 24-hour dietary recall, and clinical assessment were used to obtain data. Data analysis was done using the statistical package for social scientists (SPSS) V22.0. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were done using logistic regression for associations with significance set at P value < 0.05. A total of 364 participants were enrolled, with the majority being males (198, 54.4%) and born at term (333, 91.5%). The modal age was 12-17 months [163(44.8%)] with a mean age of 14.1 months (SD 5.32). The overall prevalence of IDA was 151/364 (41.5%). The factors associated with IDA included male sex (aOR 1.61), current episode of diarrhoea (aOR 1.71), poor meal frequency (aOR 1.78), no vegetable consumption (aOR 2.47), and consuming fruits once (aOR 1.97) in 7 days preceding the study. The study finds a high prevalence of IDA among infants 6-23 months with at least four in 10 being affected. Screening for IDA should be recommended in male children with current diarrhoea, poor intake of fruits and vegetables, and poor meal frequency. The Mentzer index is an equally good alternative screening test for IDA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cribra orbitalia is believed to be a skeletal indicator of chronic anaemia, scurvy, rickets or related metabolic diseases. It has been suggested that it may be used as a proxy indicator for intestinal parasite infection, as parasites often cause anaemia today. Our aim is to investigate this association in the medieval population of Cambridge, UK. MATERIALS Individuals excavated from the cemeteries of the Augustinian friary and All Saints by the Castle parish church, and aged from 7 to adulthood. METHODS We undertook parasite analysis of the pelvic sediment and control samples of 46 burials with intact orbital roofs. RESULTS Human roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) and/or whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) were identified in the pelvic sediment of 22 individuals, and cribra orbitalia noted in 11 individuals. Barnards test showed no association between parasite infection and cribra orbitalia (p = .882). CONCLUSION We found no association between infection and cribra orbitalia infection in this medieval adult population, calling into question this hypothesis, at least for adults. SIGNIFICANCE High or low cribra orbitalia prevalence in adults should not be used to infer rates of intestinal parasite infection. LIMITATIONS The individuals in the study were over the age of 7, with no younger children. It is possible that only parasites which cause marked anaemia (such as hookworm, schistosomiasis or malaria) may cause cribra orbitalia, while less marked anaemia from roundworm and whipworm may not do so. SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH Repeating this study in younger children, when most cribra orbitalia appears to form.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the emergence of diverse programs in Mexico to address anemia and micronutrient deficiencies in disadvantaged groups, progress on reducing their prevalence has stagnated. In Mexico, anemia surveillance at the population level is conducted through the National Health and Nutrition Survey ENSANUT (for its acronym in Spanish). OBJECTIVE To overview the trends in anemia and iron deficiency (ID) from 1999 to 2018-19 in the Mexican population before COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Data from five nationwide surveys in Mexico were used. Where available, data on anemia, ID, and ID anemia (IDA) were extracted from ENSANUTs 1999, 2006, 2012, 2016, and 2018-19 in participants from 1 to 99 years old. Blood sample collection methods were similar across surveys (1999-2018) where capillary drop blood was used to estimate Hb using a HemoCue and serum blood samples to measure ferritin and C-reactive protein concentration. RESULTS The trend in anemia prevalence shows a U-shape from 1999 to 2018-19 in <60 years old. In older adults (≥60 years), an increasing trend was observed. Anemia declined progressively from 1999 to 2012 but increased from 2016 to 2018-19 in comparison with 2012. In contrast, ID declined from 2006 to 2018-19, mainly in children, while IDA did not change over this period. In older adults, ID prevalence remained constant over time. CONCLUSIONS The shifting trend in anemia prevalence across ENSANUTs 1999 through 2018-19 did not mimic the decreasing trend of ID over the same period of time. Other noncausal factors seem to play an important role in the variability of hemoglobin measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to describe the prevalence and predictors of childhood anemia in an Amazonian population-based birth cohort study. METHODS Prevalence of maternal anemia was estimated at delivery (hemoglobin [Hb] concentration < 110 g/L) in women participating in the MINA-Brazil birth cohort study and in their children, examined at ages one, two (Hb < 110 g/L), and five (Hb < 115 g/L). Moreover, ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, and C-reactive protein concentrations were measured in mothers at delivery and in their 1- and 2-year-old children to estimate the prevalence of iron deficiency and its contribution to anemia, while adjusting for potential confounders by multiple Poisson regression analysis (adjusted relative risk [RRa]). RESULTS The prevalence 95% confidence interval (CI) of maternal anemia, iron deficiency, and iron-deficiency anemia at delivery were 17.3% (14.0-21.0%), 42.6% (38.0-47.2%), and 8.7% (6.3-11.6)%, respectively (n = 462). At one year of age (n = 646), 42.2% (38.7-45.8%) of the study children were anemic, 38.4% (34.6-42.3%) were iron-deficient, and 26.3 (23.0-29.9) had iron-deficiency anemia. At two years of age (n = 761), these values decreased to 12.8% (10.6-15.2%), 18.1% (15.5-21.1%), and 4.1% (2.8-5.7%), respectively; at five years of age (n = 655), 5.2% (3.6-7.2%) were anemic. Iron deficiency (RRa = 2.19; 95%CI: 1.84-2.60) and consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) (RRa = 1.56; 95%CI: 1.14-2.13) were significant contributors to anemia at 1 year, after adjusting for maternal schooling. At 2 years, anemia was significantly associated with maternal anemia at delivery (RRa: 1.67; 95%CI: 1.17-2.39), malaria since birth (2.25; 1.30-3.87), and iron deficiency (2.15; 1.47-3.15), after adjusting for children's age and household wealth index. CONCLUSIONS Anemia continues to be highly prevalent during pregnancy and early childhood in the Amazon. Public health policies should address iron deficiency, UPF intake, maternal anemia, and malaria to prevent and treat anemia in Amazonian children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited randomized controlled trial evidence to support the association between vitamin D deficiency and anemia risk, highlighting the necessity for further investigations into the role of vitamin D in influencing iron status. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink consumption (4,000 IU) on vitamin D and iron status biomarkers among iron-deficient women (serum ferritin of <20 μg/L [to convert μg/L ferritin to ng/mL, multiply by 1]). DESIGN An 8-week double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted. SUBJECTS/SETTING A total of 45 healthy, nonpregnant, nonlactating subjects aged 18 through 40 years (mean [SD] 25.3 [4.6] years) were included in the study, excluding those who donated blood 6 months prior, regularly consumed nutritional supplements, or had gastrointestinal or iron metabolic disorders. INTERVENTION Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink or a placebo. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Measurements of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), serum ferritin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and full blood count concentrations were obtained at baseline, interim, and post intervention. STATISTICAL ANALYSES A mixed model, repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyze the intervention effect. RESULTS Attrition rate for the study was 13%, with 6 dropouts, and 39 subjects completed the study. Daily consumption of vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink in the intervention group resulted in significant increases in 25(OH)D and serum ferritin concentrations compared with the placebo group. The intervention group showed significantly higher mean (SD) changes (Δ) in both 25(OH)D (Δ 76.4 [30.2] nmol/L [to convert nmol/L 25(OH)D to ng/mL, multiply by .4] vs Δ -1.3 [10.7] nmol/L; P = .001) and serum ferritin concentrations (Δ 2.2 [4.2] μg/L vs Δ -0.3 [3.4] μg/L; P = .048) between baseline and post intervention. The other iron status biomarkers were not affected by the intervention. CONCLUSIONS Our study found that daily vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink supplementation for 8 weeks effectively improved 25(OH)D and iron stores, indicated by increased serum ferritin concentrations, in iron-deficient women. Further research is needed to evaluate its safety, efficacy, feasibility, and optimal food fortification in diverse populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over one-third of women worldwide suffer from anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia is particularly pronounced among women of reproductive age (WRA) in developing countries, such as India. No prior study has ever exclusively studied the prevalence of anaemia across the Aspirational Districts of India. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of anaemia across Aspirational Districts of India and to identify the determinants of anaemia among WRA in these districts. METHODS From the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21), data on 114,444 and 108,782 women aged 15-49 from Aspirational Districts were analyzed in our study, respectively. Bivariate statistics and multivariable binary logistic regression were used to identify the determinants of anaemia. RESULTS The national prevalence of anaemia among WRA has increased from 53% in NFHS-4 to 57% in NFHS-5 whereas anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts has increased from 58.7% in NFHS-4 to 61.1% in NFHS-5. Between 2015 and 2021, over 60% of Aspirational Districts experienced an increase in the prevalence of anaemia and one-fourth, specifically 29 out of 112, observed a rise by at least 10 percentage points (pp). Notably, there are significant variations in anaemia prevalence among districts, with Simdega and Udalgiri having the highest anaemia prevalence in NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 at 78.2% and 81.5%, respectively. During this period, Barpeta followed by Udalgiri of Assam have witnessed the maximum increase with 29.4% and 26.7% respectively. Moreover, pooled regression results show women with three to four children [AOR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.08-1.17], women who breastfeed [AOR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.13-1.20], Scheduled Tribe women [AOR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.35-1.44], poorest women [AOR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.22-1.33] and women those who consume fish occasionally [AOR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.12-1.17] were more likely to be anaemic. CONCLUSION The significant increase in anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts of India is a matter of concern. Given the rise in anaemia among WRA, determinants-based and district-specific measures must be designed and implemented to reduce the prevalence of anaemia among Aspirational Districts of India.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many women around the world avoid taking iron supplements during their menstrual bleeding, thinking that menstrual bleeding will increase after taking these supplements. Due to the lack of relevant scientific evidence in this regard, this study was performed to determine the effect of iron supplementation on menstrual blood volume and hemoglobin level during menstrual bleeding. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this three-blind randomized clinical trial, 160 non-anemic female students of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences were selected through a public call and then they were randomly assigned to two intervention and control groups. The intervention group was given a ferrous sulfate tablet containsing 50 mg of elemental iron daily in the first four days of bleeding for three consecutive menstrual cycles, and the control group received a placebo simultaneously. Before and after the intervention, the level of hemoglobin was measured and the Higham chart was completed in each menstrual cycle by the participants of the two groups. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS software version 21 and Chi-square, independent t-test, paired t-test, analysis of variance with repeated measures, and nonparametric tests. RESULTS Before performing the intervention, the mean Higham score and hemoglobin level of the two groups were not statistically significant (P = 0.307, P = 0.670). The mean Higham score after each intervention was not statistically significant between the two groups over time or when considering the interaction of the time group (P = 0.77, P = 0.916). The hemoglobin level of these two groups did not change significantly after the intervention compared with that before the intervention (P = 0.444). CONCLUSION Compared with a placebo, taking iron supplements containing 50 mg of elemental iron during the first four days of menstrual bleeding in non-anemic women did not change the volume of menstrual bleeding and hemoglobin level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is associated with stunting. Citrulline, produced in mature enterocytes, may be a valuable biomarker of small intestinal enterocyte mass in the context of EED. OBJECTIVES We aimed to explore the correlates of plasma citrulline (p-cit) in children with stunting. METHODS In a cross-sectional study using baseline data from the community-based MAGNUS (milk affecting growth, cognition and the gut in child stunting) trial (ISRCTN13093195), we explored potential correlates of p-cit in Ugandan children with stunting aged 12-59 mo. Using linear regression in univariate and multivariate models, we explored associations with socioeconomics, diet, micronutrient status, and water, sanitation, and hygiene characteristics. The influence of covariates age, fasting, and systemic inflammation were also explored. RESULTS In 750 children, the mean ± standard deviation age was 32.0 ± 11.7 mo, and height-for-age z-score was -3.02 ± 0.74. P-cit, available for 730 children, differed according to time fasted and was 20.7 ± 8.9, 22.3 ± 10.6 and 24.2 ± 13.1 μmol/L if fasted <2, 2-5 and >5 h, respectively. Positive correlates of p-cit were age [0.07; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.001, 0.15 μmol/L] and log10 serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (8.88; 95% CI: 5.09, 12.67 μmol/L). With adjustment for systemic inflammation, the association with serum insulin-like growth factor-1 reduced (4.98; 95% CI: 0.94, 9.03 μmol/L). Negative correlates of p-cit included food insecurity, wet season (-3.12; 95% CI: -4.97, -1.26 μmol/L), serum C-reactive protein (-0.15; 95% CI: -0.20, -0.10 μmol/L), serum α1-acid glycoprotein (-5.34; 95% CI: -6.98, -3.70 μmol/L) and anemia (-1.95; 95% CI: -3.72, -0.18 μmol/L). Among the negatively correlated water, sanitation, and hygiene characteristics was lack of soap for handwashing (-2.53; 95% CI: -4.82, -0.25 μmol/L). Many associations attenuated with adjustment for inflammation. CONCLUSIONS Many of the correlates of p-cit are characteristic of populations with a high EED prevalence. Systemic inflammation is strongly associated with p-cit and is implicated in EED and stunting. Adjustment for systemic inflammation attenuates many associations, reflecting either confounding, mediation, or both. This study highlights the complex interplay between p-cit and systemic inflammation.

Abstract
Nutritional Immunity is one of the most ancient innate immune responses, during which the body can restrict nutrients availability to pathogens and restricts their uptake by the gut mucosa (mucosal block). Though this can be a beneficial strategy during infection, it also is associated with non-communicable diseases-where the pathogen is missing; leading to increased morbidity and mortality as micronutritional uptake and distribution in the body is hindered. Here, we discuss the acute immune response in respect to nutrients, the opposing nutritional demands of regulatory and inflammatory cells and particularly focus on some nutrients linked with inflammation such as iron, vitamins A, Bs, C, and other antioxidants. We propose that while the absorption of certain micronutrients is hindered during inflammation, the dietary lymph path remains available. As such, several clinical trials investigated the role of the lymphatic system during protein absorption, following a ketogenic diet and an increased intake of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, in reducing inflammation and ameliorating disease.

Abstract
The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anemia, and anemia with micronutrient deficiencies (iron/ vitamin B12/ folic acid) and their determinants among children aged 12-59 months in India. Comprehensive National Nutritional Survey (2016-2018) is Asia's largest nutrition survey conducted among 0-19 years aged children in India. We used generalised linear model (modified Poisson) with adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) to assess the socio-economic and biochemical factors associated with anemia and anemia with micronutrient deficiencies amongst children aged 12 to 59 months. Out of the total of 11,237 children included in the study, 40.5% (95%CI:38·6-42·6) were anemic, 30.0% (95%CI:27·8-32·4) had anemia with micronutrient deficiencies and 60.9% (95%CI:58·2-63·5) had micronutrient deficiencies with or without anemia. Younger age (aPR(95%CI) for one year old: 1.9(1.5-2.4), two year old: 1.8(1.5-2.2), three year old: 1.4(1.2-1.7) compared to four year old children) and lower educational status of the mother (mothers without formal schooling aPR(95%CI):1.4(1.1-1.8); 1-9 standards: 1.4(1.2-1.7)) vs mother educated with high school and above, consumption of less than 100 iron-folic acid tablets during pregnancy (aPR(95%CI):1.3(1.0-1.7) vs consumption of ≥ 180 tablets, any self-reported illness among children within two weeks preceding the interview (aPR(95%CI):1.2(1.1-1.4) vs no-illnesses, iron deficiency (aPR(95%CI):2.2(2.0-2.6)) and zinc deficiency (aPR(95%CI):1.3(1.1-1.4)) were associated with anemia in children. Among anemic, the children from scheduled tribe (aPR(95%CI):1.4(1.1-1.8)) vs other caste categories, and those following unsafe child faeces disposal practices (aPR(95%CI):1.2(1.0-1.4)) vs those who follow safe faeces disposal practices had higher chance of having micronutrient deficiency. One third of children aged 12-59 months had anemia with micronutrient deficiency (iron/ folic acid/ vitamin B12). More than half of children had micronutrient deficiencies irrespective of anemia. Micronutrient deficiencies, antenatal IFA intake, safe hygiene practices need to be strengthened to leave no stone unturned in control of anemia among under-five children in India.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia seriously affects the health and quality of life of the older adult population and may be influenced by various types of environmental metal exposure. Current studies on metals and anemia are mainly limited to single metals, and the association between polymetals and their mixtures and anemia remains unclear. METHODS We determined 11 urinary metal concentrations and hemoglobin levels in 3781 participants. Binary logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) model were used to estimate the association of individual metals with anemia. We used Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and Quantile g-computation (Q-g) regression to assess the overall association between metal mixtures and anemia and identify the major contributing elements. Stratified analyses were used to explore the association of different metals with anemia in different populations. RESULTS In a single-metal model, nine urinary metals significantly associated with anemia. RCS analysis further showed that the association of arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) with anemia was linear, while cobalt, molybdenum, thallium, and zinc were non-linear. The BKMR model revealed a significant positive association between the concentration of metal mixtures and anemia. Combined Q-g regression analysis suggested that metals such as Cu, As, and tellurium (Te) were positively associated with anemia, with Te as the most significant contributor. Stratified analyses showed that the association of different metals with anemia varied among people of different sexes, obesity levels, lifestyle habits, and blood pressure levels. CONCLUSIONS Multiple metals are associated with anemia in the older adult population. A significant positive association was observed between metal mixture concentrations and anemia, with Te being the most important factor. The association between urinary metal concentrations and anemia is more sensitive in the non-hypertensive populations.

Abstract
This review delves into the intricate relationship between anemia, iron metabolism, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), aiming to unravel the interconnected pathways that contribute to the complex interplay between these 3 entities. A systematic exploration of relevant literature was conducted, encompassing studies examining the association between anemia, iron status, and HIV infection. Both clinical and preclinical investigations were analyzed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking these components. Chronic inflammation, a hallmark of HIV infection, disrupts iron homeostasis, impacting erythropoiesis and contributing to anemia. Direct viral effects on bone marrow function further compound red blood cell deficiencies. Antiretroviral therapy, while essential for managing HIV, introduces potential complications, including medication-induced anemia. Dysregulation of iron levels in different tissues adds complexity to the intricate network of interactions. Effective management of anemia in HIV necessitates a multifaceted approach. Optimization of antiretroviral therapy, treatment of opportunistic infections, and targeted nutritional interventions, including iron supplementation, are integral components. However, challenges persist in understanding the specific molecular mechanisms governing these interconnected pathways. Decoding the interconnected pathways of anemia, iron metabolism, and HIV is imperative for enhancing the holistic care of individuals with HIV/AIDS. A nuanced understanding of these relationships will inform the development of more precise interventions, optimizing the management of anemia in this population. Future research endeavors should focus on elucidating the intricate molecular mechanisms, paving the way for innovative therapeutic strategies in the context of HIV-associated anemia.

Abstract
Background and aims Anemia is a widespread global health concern, and recent research has unveiled a link between anemia and inflammation. The Dietary Inflammation Index (DII) is a novel tool used to assess the overall inflammatory potential of an individual's diet. However, until now, there have been no studies demonstrating a connection between DII and anemia. This study aimed to explore the relationship between DII and the risk of anemia among Americans, as well as to examine the influence of other risk factors on this association. Methods Data from 32,244 patients were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 1999 to 2018. Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined the correlation between DII and anemia. Subgroup analyses and smoothed curve analyses were conducted to further investigate the association between DII and anemia. Results The analysis revealed a significant positive association between higher DII scores and increased anemia risk in the American population (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.06, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.03 to 1.09, p < 0.0001). This association remained consistent in subgroup analyses, encompassing various age groups, distinct Body Mass Index (BMI) categories, varying diabetes mellitus statuses, histories of hypertension, females, individuals with a RIP <3.5, and Non-Hispanic Black individuals. Notably, the association was particularly significant among non-smokers. Smoothed curve fitting analysis demonstrated a linear relationship between DII and the prevalence of anemia. Conclusion Our findings underscore a positive correlation between the inflammatory potential of one's diet and the risk of anemia, especially when coupled with other risk factors. Consequently, reducing the consumption of pro-inflammatory foods may serve as one of the effective measures against the development of anemia. Given the variations in gender, age, BMI, and chronic diseases observed in our study, tailored policies could better cater to the specific needs of diverse populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Anaemia affects more than half of Indian women and children, but the contribution of its causes remains unquantified. We examined interrelationships between Hb and nutritional, environmental, infectious and genetic determinants of anaemia in non-pregnant mothers and children in Uttar Pradesh (UP). DESIGN We conducted a cross-sectional survey of households in twenty-five districts of UP between October and December 2016. We collected socio-demographic data, anthropometry and venous blood in 1238 non-pregnant mothers and their children. We analysed venous blood samples for malaria, Hb, ferritin, retinol, folate, Zn, vitamin B12, C-reactive protein, α1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and β-thalassaemia. We used path analysis to examine pathways through which predictors of anaemia were associated with Hb concentration. SETTING Rural and urban households in twenty-five districts of UP. PARTICIPANTS Mothers 18-49 years and children 6-59 months in UP. RESULTS A total of 36·4 % of mothers and 56·0 % of children were anaemic, and 26·7 % of women and 44·6 % of children had Fe deficiency anaemia. Ferritin was the strongest predictor of Hb (β (95 % CI) = 1·03 (0·80, 1·27) g/dL in women and 0·90 (0·68, 1·12) g/dL in children). In children only, red blood cell folate and AGP were negatively associated with Hb and retinol was positively associated with Hb. CONCLUSIONS Over 70 % of mothers and children with anaemia had Fe deficiency, needing urgent attention. However, several simultaneous predictors of Hb exist, including nutrient deficiencies and inflammation. The potential of Fe interventions to address anaemia may be constrained unless coexisting determinants are jointly addressed.

Abstract
Objectives The burden and highest regional prevalence of anaemia is reported in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The study evaluated changes in anaemia prevalence across the Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) periods in SSA and reported factors influencing observed changes in the trend. Method The study was implemented by a two-stage cross-sectional stratified sampling approach. The study involved women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in sub-Saharan Africa countries (Ghana, Sierra Leone, Mali, and Benin) using two different periods of their demographic health surveys (DHS) data. The study adopted both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The chi-square test was used to determine the existence of a statistically significant relationship between the outcome and predictor variables and test the observed changes in anaemia. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted on each survey year and the pooled dataset for eligible study countries. Multivariate decomposition analysis was performed to explain how compositional changes and behavioural effects of women characteristics affected the changes in anaemia prevalence. The study reported frequencies, percentages and odds ratios along with their 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results Ghana and Sierra Leone experienced 17.07% [95% CI: 14.76-19.37, p < 0.001] and 1% [95% CI: 1.0-2.9, p > 0.05] of anaemia decrease from period 1 to period 2, respectively, while Mali and Benin experienced 11% [95% CI: 9.14-12.90, p < 0.001] and 16.7% [95% CI: 14.99-18.5, p < 0.001] of increase in anaemia prevalence from period 1 to period 2, respectively. Behavioural effects explained the decrease in Ghana and the increase in Benin and Mali while endowments or compositional changes explained the decrease in Sierra Leone. Conclusion Anaemia continues to pose a significant challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, there is an imperative need to scale up the implementation of nutrition-related programmes and advocacies to ensure optimum changes in women nutrition-related behaviours.

Abstract
Background Anemia poses a significant public health problem, affecting 1.6 billion people and contributing to the loss of 68.4 million disability-adjusted life years. We assessed the impact of a market-based home fortification program with micronutrient powder (MNP) called Pushtikona-5 implemented by Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) on the prevalence of anemia among children aged 6-59 months in Bangladesh. Methods We used a modified stepped wedged design and conducted three baseline, two midline, and three endline surveys to evaluate the Pushtikona-5 program implemented through three BRAC program platforms. We interviewed children's caregivers, and collected finger-prick blood samples from children to measure hemoglobin concentration. We also collected data on coverage of Pushtikona-5 and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices. We performed bivariate and multivariable analysis and calculated adjusted risk ratios (ARRs) to assess the effect of program outcomes. Results A total of 16,936 households were surveyed. The prevalence of anemia was 46.6% at baseline, dropping to 32.1% at midline and 31.2% at endline. These represented adjusted relative reductions of 34% at midline (RR 0.66, 95%CI 0.62 to 0.71, value of p <0.001) and 32% at endline (RR 0.68, 95%CI 0.64 to 0.71, value of p <0.001) relative to baseline. Regarding MNP coverage, at baseline, 43.5% of caregivers surveyed had heard about MNP; 24.3% of children had ever consumed food with MNP, and only 1.8% had consumed three or more sachets in the 7 days preceding the survey. These increased to 63.0, 36.9, and 4.6%, respectively, at midline and 90.6, 68.9, and 11.5%, respectively, at endline. Conclusion These results show evidence of a reduction in the prevalence of anemia and an improvement in coverage. This study provides important evidence of the feasibility and potential for impact of linking market-based MNP distribution with IYCF promotion through community level health workers.

Abstract
Anaemia among women and young children remains a major public health concern. This secondary study describes the anaemia prevalence among young hospitalised children and their mothers in northern Lao People's Democratic Republic and explores possible nutritional causes and risk factors for anaemia. Hospitalised children (ages 21 days to <18 months) with clinical symptoms suggestive of thiamine deficiency disorders were eligible along with their mothers. Venous blood was collected for determination of haemoglobin, ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), retinol-binding protein (RBP), erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficient (EGRac), thiamine diphosphate (ThDP) and acute phase proteins. Risk factors for anaemia were modelled using minimally adjusted logistic regression controlling for age. Haemoglobin results were available for 436 women (mean ± SD age 24.7 ± 6.4 years; 1.6% pregnant) and 427 children (4.3 ± 3.5 months; 60.3% male). Anaemia prevalence (Hb < 120 g/L for nonpregnant women and <110 g/L for pregnant women and children) was 30.7% among women and 55.2% among children. In bivariate analyses, biomarkers significantly associated with anaemia in women were ferritin, sTfR, RBP, EGRac and ThDP. Other risk factors for women were lower BMI, mid-upper arm circumference < 23.5 cm, lower education, lower socioeconomic index, food insecurity, Hmong ethnicity, not/rarely having attended antenatal care, not having taken antenatal iron-containing supplements and not meeting minimum dietary diversity. Risk factors for anaemia among children were older age, male sex, stunting, sTfR, ThDP and alpha-1-acid-glycoprotein. Anaemia was common among women and their hospitalised children and was associated with micronutrient deficiencies and socioeconomic, dietary and health care-seeking risk factors, suggesting that multiple strategies are required to prevent anaemia among women and children.

Abstract
Iron (Fe) is a necessary trace element in numerous pathways of human metabolism. Therefore, Fe deficiency is capable of causing multiple health problems. Apart from the well-known microcytic anemia, lack of Fe can cause severe psychomotor disorders in children, pregnant women, and adults in general. Iron deficiency is a global health issue, mainly caused by dietary deficiency but aggravated by inflammatory conditions. The challenges related to this deficiency need to be addressed on national and international levels. This review aims to summarize briefly the disease burden caused by Fe deficiency in the context of global public health and aspires to offer some hands-on guidelines.

Abstract
Background Anemia poses a significant challenge among Indian adolescent girls due to their heightened vulnerability, resulting from increased micronutrient requirements, rapid physical growth, menstrual blood loss, inadequate nutrition, and socioeconomic disparities. This study sought to evaluate the prevalence of anemia, along with socioeconomic and nutritional statuses among adolescent girls attending rural public schools in Pune, India. Methods A sample of 400 girls was selected from 22 villages through Symbiosis International University. Hemoglobin levels were assessed using the HemoCue 201 system, while standardized protocols were employed for height, weight, and BMI-for-age measurements. Socioeconomic status was determined using the Kuppuswamy scale. Results The findings revealed an overall anemia prevalence of (42.75%), comprising severe (2.5%), moderate (21%) and mild (20.25%) cases. Additionally, a substantial proportion (74.6%) of girls were classified as underweight. Socioeconomic analysis disclosed that 64.25% of families belonged to the lower middle class, and 27% in the upper lower class. Anemia was more prevalent in young adolescent girls (10-14 years) and in the families of adolescents who had low income, were illiterate, unemployed, and belonged to the lower-middle class and upper-lower-class socio-economic status (SES) and did not have a bank account. Conclusion Anemia was prevalent in adolescent girls and associated with low SES. This study underscores the limitations of relying solely on the distribution of iron and folic acid tablets to combat anemia. A holistic strategy is imperative, encompassing improvements in SES of families (literacy, employment and income), as well as initiatives aimed at enhancing the nutritional status of adolescent girls.

Abstract
Background Patients with colorectal cancer often have anemia and other symptoms after diagnosis, especially in patients with advanced colorectal cancer. This study explored the association between different types of preoperative anemia and tumor characteristics and inflammatory response in patients with colorectal cancer and to evaluate the prognosis of patients with different types of anemia before operation. Methods The clinical data of 95 patients with colorectal cancer treated in the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University from February 2016 to January 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the hemoglobin concentration (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean hemoglobin content (MCH) and mean hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), the patients were divided into the non-anemia group, normal cell anemia group, and small cell anemia group. The three groups' general data, oncological characteristics, and mGPS scores were compared. The patients were followed up for five years, and the survival analysis was carried out. The cox proportional hazard regression model was used to analyze the prognostic factors of patients with colorectal cancer. Results The preoperative anemia rate of patients with colorectal cancer was 43.15% (41/95). There were significant differences in gender, weight loss, CA724, tumor location, tumor size, TNM stage, mGPS score, and positive expression rate of Ki-67 among different anemia groups. There was a significant difference in survival time among a non-anemia group, small cell anemia group, and normal cell anemia group (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that tumor size, TNM stage, distant metastasis, mGPS score, Ki-67 positive expression rate, and anemia type were independent risk factors affecting the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients (P < 0.05). Conclusion The oncological characteristics of colorectal cancer patients with different types of preoperative anemia are different. Preoperative anemia and systemic inflammatory status are independent risk factors for the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients.

Abstract
Background Maternal anaemia (anaemia in pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) remains a persistent challenge, particularly in Kano State, Nigeria, which has the highest prevalence of maternal anaemia globally, at 72%. Methods We conducted a qualitative study in Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano State, Nigeria. We aimed to identify factors constraining uptake and provision of maternal anaemia care, exploring perspectives across different stakeholders. We carried out 10 key informant interviews with policymakers and hospital managers, 28 in-depth interviews with healthcare providers and pregnant women using antenatal services and four focus group discussions with pregnant women's husbands and mothers-in-law. Data were analysed thematically. Results Issues with provision include a lack of provider training and guidelines specific to maternal anaemia and blood transfusion, insufficient staff to meet increasing demand, and inadequate resources. Issues with uptake include the inability to afford informal user fees, distrust in health services and the blood transfusion process, and a lack of understanding of the causes, consequences, and treatment for anaemia, resulting in poor uptake of care and adherence to treatment. Conclusions This study recommends the implementation of standardized guidelines and training sessions to better support healthcare providers in offering quality services and increasing funding allocated to supporting maternal anaemia care. Education initiatives for service users and the public are also recommended to build public trust in health services and to improve understanding of maternal anaemia.

Abstract
Child anemia is a severe public health concern in low- and middle-income countries. Identifying anemia change over time, its spatial heterogeneity, and the influencing factors is critical to monitoring and prioritizing successful interventions. This analysis uses nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys administrated in 11 East African countries, which included 149 864 children. Trend analysis, interpolation, and Kulldorff scan statistics were used. Trend and hotspot areas were identified and multilevel (three-level) ordinal logistic regression analyzed. More than half of the children in East Africa suffer from anemia. In all but two countries, the prevalence of child anemia was considered a severe public health problem; no country had an anemia prevalence < 35%. Anemia reduction efforts and the prevalence of anemia exhibit fluctuations over time in East African countries. Zimbabwe has shown a more consistent reduction in all forms of anemia. Most countries have experienced a significant reduction in the severe form of anemia in recent years. Community-based spatial analysis indicates that child anemia is heterogeneous within and between countries. Many communities are experiencing a high prevalence of anemia among children, with a maximum of four of five and a minimum one of five of their children infected by any anemia. Nutrition, genetic hemoglobin disorders, physical environment, poverty, and maternal and community characteristics influence child anemia. Multisectorial interventions that improve maternal and child nutrition are needed. These analyses support the design and prioritization of interventions in high-risk areas and communities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES HIV and malaria coinfection impacts disease management and clinical outcomes. This study investigated hematologic abnormalities in malaria-asymptomatic people living with HIV (PLHIV) in regions with differing malaria transmission. METHODS Study participants were enrolled in the African Cohort Study: two sites in Kenya, one in Uganda, and one in Nigeria. Data was collected at enrollment and every 6 months. Logistic regression estimated odds ratios for associations between HIV/malaria status and anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leucopenia. RESULTS Samples from 1587 participants with one or more visits comprising 1471 (92.7%) from PLHIV and 116 (7.3%) without HIV were analyzed. Parasite point prevalence significantly differed across the study sites (P <0.001). PLHIV had higher odds of anemia, with males at lower odds compared to females; the odds of anemia decreased with age, reaching significance in those ≥50 years old. Participants in Kisumu, Kenya had higher odds of anemia compared to other sites. PLHIV had higher odds of leucopenia, but malaria co-infection was not associated with worsened leucopenia. The odds of thrombocytopenia were decreased in HIV/malaria co-infection compared to the uninfected group. CONCLUSION Hematological parameters are important indicators of health and disease. In PLHIV with asymptomatic malaria co-infection enrolled across four geographic sites in three African countries, abnormalities in hematologic parameters differ in different malaria transmission settings and are region-specific.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Understanding the outcomes of anemia in pregnancy is critical. Since no study has been conducted regarding the maternal and neonatal outcomes of iron-deficiency anemia in Hormozgan province of Iran, this study aims to assess the maternal and neonatal outcomes of iron-deficiency anemia in women who gave birth in Hormozgan province from January 2020 to January 2022. METHODS We retrospectively assessed all singleton pregnant women who gave birth at a tertiary hospital in Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan province, Iran, for two years. We divided all women into iron-deficiency anemic and non-iron-deficiency anemic women. Iron-deficiency anemia was defined as hemoglobin less than 10.5 mg/dl at the time of admission without any other hemoglobinopathy, such as sickle cell anemia or thalassemia. Using electronic patient records, data were extracted from the Iranian Maternal and Neonatal Network (IMaN Net), a valid national system. Since the information of birth under 24 weeks of gestation is not recorded in this system, we excluded all deliveries under 24 weeks of gestation. The outcome measures of the study were demographic factors (age, education, residency place, access to prenatal care, smoking), obstetrical factors (parity, labor induction, fetal presentation, mode of delivery), and maternal and neonatal outcomes (the incidence of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, placenta abruption, postpartum hemorrhage, maternal need for blood transfusion, maternal need for intensive care unit, preterm birth, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, birth asphyxia, stillbirth, and neonatal intensive care admission). Chi-square tests were used to compare differences between iron-deficiency anemic and non-iron-deficiency anemic women. Logistic regression models were used to assess the effect of iron-deficiency anemia on maternal and neonatal outcomes. The result was presented as odds ratio (OR) or adjusted odds ratio (aOR) after adjusting for covariates and a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The incidence of iron-deficiency anemia was 2.97%. Education and residency were among the demographic factors that differed significantly between groups. Iron-deficiency anemia was more frequent in those with higher education and women who lived in rural areas. In terms of obstetrical factors, method of delivery was the only significantly different factor between groups. Iron-deficiency anemic mothers had substantially more instrumental deliveries than non-iron-deficiency anemic mothers (4.3% vs. 0.8%), while the incidence of cesarean section was lower. Based on logistic regression in terms of maternal and neonatal outcomes, iron-deficiency anemic women had a substantially higher risk of the need for maternal blood transfusion (aOR: 6.54, 95%CI: 4.72-8.15), postpartum hemorrhage (aOR: 1.54, 95%CI: 0.71-2.11), preterm birth (aOR: 0.98, 95%CI: 0.45-1.13), low birth weight (aOR: 1.04, 95%CI: 0.78-2.01), intrauterine growth retardation (aOR: 1.30, 95%CI: 0.99-2.10), and neonatal intensive care admission (aOR: 1.06, 95%CI: p.52-2.72), after adjusting for educational level, residency place, and method of delivery. CONCLUSIONS Despite the higher incidence of postpartum hemorrhage and maternal blood transfusion, we found no increase in maternal intensive care unit admission risk. Regarding neonatal outcomes, iron-deficiency anemia was linked to preterm birth, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, and neonatal intensive care admission.

Abstract
Background Anaemia is a global public health issue that mostly affects children, women, and adults in low- and middle-income countries. Aim This study sought to evaluate the prevalence of anaemia and its contributing factors among South and Southeast Asian (SSEA) women of reproductive age. Methods Data analysis was undertaken utilising data from 10 SSEA countries' Demographic and Health Surveys. The link between anaemia and independent variables was established using a multivariate logistic regression model with a 95% confidence interval. To investigate the relationship between explanatory variables and anaemia, the Pearson's correlations test was carried out. Results In SSEA, the prevalence of anaemia among women (15-49 years old) was 50.17% (95% CI: 39.4, 61.0), ranging from 13.3% (95% CI: 2.5, 24.1) in the Philippines to 70.3% (95% CI: 59.5, 81.1) in Nepal. Being younger, having rural residents, having lower educational attainment, and being in households with lower wealth quantiles were linked to a higher prevalence of anaemia in most countries. Conclusion The findings of this study imply that a variety of individual characteristics play a role in the higher risk of anaemia. To combat anaemia, evidence-based, multidisciplinary policies and initiatives targeting women's health and nutrition, as well as scaling up women's education, empowerment, and socioeconomic position, are needed.
