Interactions and effects of microplastics with heavy metals in aquatic and terrestrial environments

Co-exposure of maize to polyethylene microplastics and ZnO nanoparticles: Impact on growth, fate, and interaction

Microplastics (MPs), especially polyethylene MPs (PE MPs), which are the primary component of mulch, have attracted increasing attention in recent years. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), which constitute a metal-based nanomaterial commonly used in agricultural production, co-converge with PE MPs in the soil. However, studies revealing the behavior and fate of ZnO NPs in soil-plant systems in the presence of MPs are limited. In this study, a pot experiment was used to evaluate the effects of maize co-exposure to PE MPs (0.5 % and 5 % w/w) and ZnO NPs (500 mg/kg) on growth, element distribution, speciation, and adsorption mechanism. The results demonstrate that individual exposure to PE MPs posed no significant toxicity; however, it significantly decreased maize grain yield (essentially 0). ZnO NP-exposure treatments significantly increased the Zn concentration and distribution intensity in maize tissues. Among them, the Zn concentration in the maize root exceeded 200 mg/kg, compared with 40 mg/kg in the grain. Moreover, the Zn concentrations in various tissues decreased in the following order: stem, leaf, cob, bract, and grain. Reassuringly, ZnO NPs still could not be transported to the maize stem under co-exposure to PE MPs. ZnO NPs had been biotransformed (64 % of the Zn was associated with histidine, with the remainder being associated with P [phytate] and cysteine) in maize stem. This study provides new insights into the plant physiological risks of PE MP and ZnO NP co-exposure in the soil-plant system and assesses the fate of ZnO NPs.

Personal protective equipment and micro-nano plastics: A review of an unavoidable interrelation for a global well-being hazard

The usage and the demand for personal protective equipments (PPEs) for our day-to-day survival in this pandemic period of COVID-19 have seen a steep rise which has consequently led to improper disposal and littering. Fragmentation of these PPE units has eventually given way to micro-nano plastics (MNPs) emission in the various environmental matrices and exposure of living organisms to these MNPs has proven to be severely toxic. Numerous factors contribute to the toxicity imparted by these MNPs that mainly include their shape, size, functional groups and their chemical diversity. Even though multiple studies on the impacts of MNPs toxicity are available for other organisms, human cell line studies for various plastic polymers, other than the most common ones namely polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene (PP), are still at their nascent stage and need to be explored more. In this article, we cover a concise review of the literature on the impact of these MNPs in biotic and human systems focusing on the constituents of the PPE units and the additives that are essentially used for their manufacturing. This review will subsequently identify the need to gather scientific evidence at the smaller level to help combat this microplastic pollution and induce a more in-depth understanding of its adverse effect on our existence.

Effects of Lead and Cadmium Combined Heavy Metals on Liver Function and Lipid Metabolism in Mice

Although a large number of studies have been conducted on lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) exposure individually, information regarding the toxicity of combined Pb and Cd exposure is relatively limited. The present study aims to investigate the toxicity of Pb-Cd combination exposure and the corresponding mechanism. A heavy metal exposure model was established in mice by subcutaneous intragastric administration of Pb-Cd (50:1) for 35 days. Body weight, diet, hair state, mental state, liver index, haematological index, biochemical indicators and pathological section analysis were used to comprehensively evaluate toxicity. Then, classical oxidative stress indexes and lipidomics techniques were used to explore the potential mechanism. The results showed that Pb-Cd caused the mice to have low appetite, poor spirit, significantly reduced activity, slow weight gain and irritated or drying hair. Pb-Cd also caused liver enlargement, significantly increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) enzyme activities, and resulted in pathological changes to the liver. Prolonged Pb-Cd exposure led to significantly increased thrombocyte haematocrit (PCT), white blood cell (WBC), platelet (PLT) and monocyte (MON) counts and decreased red blood cell (RBC), haemoglobin (HGB), haematocrit (HCT) and lymphocyte (LYM) counts. Pb-Cd increased oxidative stress by increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA). Finally, Pb-Cd triggered lipid metabolism disorders by regulating linoleic acid, sphingolipid and glycerolipid metabolism.

Classification of household microplastics using a multi-model approach based on Raman spectroscopy

The extensive use of plastics leads to the release and diffusion of microplastics. Household plastic products occupy a large part and are closely related to daily life. Due to the small size and complex composition of microplastics, it is challenging to identify and quantify microplastics. Therefore,a multi-model machine learning approach was developed for classification of household microplastics based on Raman spectroscopy. In this study, Raman spectroscopy and machine learning algorithm are combined to realize the accurate identification of seven standard microplastic samples, real microplastics samples and real microplastic samples post-exposure to environmental stresses. Four single-model machine learning methods were used in this study, including Support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), Linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) model. The principal components analysis (PCA) was utilized before SVM, KNN and LDA. The classification effect of four models on standard plastic samples is over 88%, and reliefF algorithm was used to distinguish HDPE and LDPE samples. A multi-model is proposed based on four single models including PCA-LDA, PCA-KNN and MLP. The recognition accuracy of multi-model for standard microplastic samples, real microplastic samples and microplastic samples post-exposure to environmental stresses is over 98%. Our study demonstrates that the multi-model coupled with Raman spectroscopy is a valuable tool for microplastic classification.

Occurrence and spatial distribution of microplastic contaminated with heavy metals in a tropical river: Effect of land use and population density

Microplastics are of concern due to their potential environmental risks. This research aims to find the effect of land use (agriculture, urban, and aquaculture) and population density on the abundance of microplastics contaminated with heavy metals in surface water and sediment of the Chao Phraya River in Thailand. Results indicated that population density is directly correlated with increased microplastic abundance. Most microplastics were found in the urban zone (water: 80 ± 38 items/m³ and sediment: 62 ± 11 items/kg) and were small fragments (0.05 to 0.3 mm). Polymer types of polypropylene and polyethylene were commonly found. Heavy metals of Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Ti were detected in microplastics in water and sediment, with Cu, Pb, and Zn being the most dominant. Heavy metals in microplastics were highest in the agriculture zone. In general, the presence of metals on microplastics may potentially impact the ecosystem and human health.

Factors Affecting the Adsorption of Heavy Metals by Microplastics and Their Toxic Effects on Fish

Fish not only constitute an important trophic level in aquatic ecosystems but also serve as an important source of protein for human beings. The health of fish is related to the sustained and healthy development of their entire aquatic ecosystem. Due to the widespread use, mass production, high disposal frequency, and degradation resistance of plastics, these pollutants are released into aquatic environments on a large scale. They have become one of the fastest growing pollutants and have a substantial toxic effect on fish. Microplastics have intrinsic toxicity and can absorb heavy metals discharged into water. The adsorption of heavy metals onto microplastics in aquatic environments is affected by many factors and serves as a convenient way for heavy metals to migrate from the environment to organisms. Fish are exposed to both microplastics and heavy metals. In this paper, the toxic effects of heavy metal adsorption by microplastics on fish are reviewed, and the focus is on the toxic effects at the individual (survival, feeding activity and swimming, energy reserves and respiration, intestinal microorganisms, development and growth, and reproduction), cellular (cytotoxicity, oxidative damage, inflammatory response, neurotoxicity, and metabolism) and molecular (gene expression) levels. This facilitates an assessment of the pollutants' impact on ecotoxicity and contributes to the regulation of these pollutants in the environment.

Competitive adsorption of lead and cadmium onto nanoplastics with different charges: Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy study

The competitive adsorption ability and mechanisms of lead (Pb²⁺) and cadmium (Cd²⁺) by nanoplastics (NPs) with positive charges (PS-NH₂) and negative charges (PS-SO₃H) were investigated by using batch adsorption experiments coupled with the two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) method. The adsorption isotherm results showed that PS-SO₃H exhibited a higher adsorption capacity for Pb²⁺ or Cd²⁺ compared to PS-NH₂. The adsorption affinity of NPs for Pb²⁺ was higher than that of Cd²⁺. The competitive adsorption results showed that Pb²⁺ had a more pronounced negative effect on the adsorption of Cd²⁺. The adsorption capacities of NPs were affected by the surface charge and solution pH. Electrostatic force was the main factor influencing PS-SO₃H to capture Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺, while chelation was the main mechanism between PS-NH₂ and metals. The functional groups of NPs played significant roles in the sorption of Pb²⁺ or Cd²⁺ according to the FTIR spectra and 2D-COS analysis. This study provided new insights into the impact of NPs on the transport of other pollutants.

Detoxifying the heavy metals: a multipronged study of tolerance strategies against heavy metals toxicity in plants

Heavy metal concentrations exceeding permissible limits threaten human life, plant life, and all other life forms. Different natural and anthropogenic activities emit toxic heavy metals in the soil, air, and water. Plants consume toxic heavy metals from their roots and foliar part inside the plant. Heavy metals may interfere with various aspects of the plants, such as biochemistry, bio-molecules, and physiological processes, which usually translate into morphological and anatomical changes. They use various strategies to deal with the toxic effects of heavy metal contamination. Some of these strategies include restricting heavy metals to the cell wall, vascular sequestration, and synthesis of various biochemical compounds, such as phyto-chelators and organic acids, to bind the free moving heavy metal ions so that the toxic effects are minimized. This review focuses on several aspects of genetics, molecular, and cell signaling levels, which integrate to produce a coordinated response to heavy metal toxicity and interpret the exact strategies behind the tolerance of heavy metals stress. It is suggested that various aspects of some model plant species must be thoroughly studied to comprehend the approaches of heavy metal tolerance to put that knowledge into practical use.

Adsorptive Elimination of Heavy Metals from Aqueous Solution Using Magnetic Chitosan/Cellulose-Fe(III) Composite as a Bio-Sorbent

Magnetic chitosan/cellulose nanofiber-Fe(III) [M-Ch/CNF-Fe(III)] composites were isolated for the elimination of Cr(VI), Cu(II), and Pb(II) from aqueous solution. Various analytical methods, such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to determine the morphological, physicochemical, and thermal properties of the isolated M-Ch/CNF-Fe(III) composites. It was found that the M-Ch/CNF-Fe(III) composites were porous materials, and they have the potential to be implemented as an adsorbent for heavy metals removal. The adsorption efficiency of M-Ch/CNF-Fe(III) composites was determined for Cr(VI), Cu(II), and Pb(II) elimination with changing pH (pH 1.0-8.0), adsorbent doses (0.05-1.0 g), time (15-90 min), and temperature (28-80 °C). In addition, isothermal and kinetics studies were conducted to assess the adsorption behavior and mass transfer phenomena of M-Ch/CNF-Fe(III) composites as an adsorbent for Cr(VI), Cu(II) and Pb(II) elimination from aqueous solution. The outcomes of the present study reveal that the M-Ch/CNF-Fe(III) composites could be utilized as an adsorbent for the Cr(VI), Cu(II), and Pb(II) elimination from industrial effluents.

Single and combined effects of polystyrene nanoplastics and Cd on submerged plants Ceratophyllum demersum L

Nanoplastics (NPs) and heavy metals are widely distributed in aquatic ecosystem, posing a potential threat to ecosystem function. Submerged macrophytes play an important role in water purification and maintaining ecological functions. However, the coupled effects of NPs and cadmium (Cd) on submerged macrophytes physiology and the mechanisms involved are still unclear. Here, the potential effects of single and co-Cd/PSNPs exposure on Ceratophyllum demersum L. (C. demersum) were explored. Our results showed that NPs aggravated the inhibition of Cd on plant growth ate (a decrease of 35.54 %), reduced chlorophyll synthesis (a decrease of 15.84 %), and disrupted the antioxidant enzyme system (a decrease of 25.07 % on SOD activity) of C. demersum. Massive PSNPs adhered to the surface of C. demersum when exposed to co-Cd/PSNPs while they did not adhere when exposed to single-NPs. The metabolic analysis further demonstrated that co-exposure down-regulated plant cuticle synthesis and that Cd exacerbated the physical damage and shadowing effects of NPs. In addition, co-exposure upregulated pentose phosphate metabolism, leading to the accumulation of starch grains. Furthermore, PSNPs reduced Cd enrichment capacity of C. demersum. Our results unraveled distinct regulatory networks for submerged macrophytes exposed to single and composite of Cd and PSNPs, providing a new theoretical basis for assessing the risks of heavy metals and NPs in the freshwater environment.

Interactive effects of polystyrene microplastics and Pb on growth and phytochemicals in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.)

Interaction of different pollutants can aggravate hazards to biotic components in agroecosystems. Microplastics (MPs) are especially needed to be focused on because of their increasing use in life around the globe. We investigated the interactive impacts of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MP) and lead (Pb) on mung bean (Vigna radiata L.). Toxicity of MPs and Pb directly impeded V. radiata attributes. In combination i.e., M2P2 (40 µM Pb + 4.0 mg L-1 MPs) predominantly reduced the shoot root fresh and dry weights. \ Pb and PS-MP impaired the Rubisco activity and chlorophyll contents. The dose dependent relationship (M2P2) discomposed indole 3-acetic acid by 59.02%. Individual treatments P2 (40 µM Pb) and M2 (4.0 mg L^-1 MPs) respectively instigated a decline (44.07% and 27.12%) in IBA, while ABA was elevated. M2 significantly enhanced the contents of Alanine (Ala), Arginine (Arg), Proline (Pro), and glycine (Gly) by 64.11%, 63%, and 54% compared to control. Lysine (Lys) and Valine (Val) presented a converse relationship with other amino acids. Except for control, a gradual decline in yield parameters were observed in individual and combined applications of PS-MP. Proximate composition of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins also reflected a clear decrease in these compounds after combined application of Pb and MPs. Although, individual doses caused a decline in these compounds but effect of combined doses Pb and PS-MP was highly significant. Our results demonstrated the toxicity effect of Pb and MP in V. radiata attributes that is mainly linked with cumulative physiological and metabolic perturbations. These collective negative impacts of different doses of MPs and Pb on V. radiata would certainly pose serious implications for humans.

Polyethylene and polypropylene microplastics reduce chemisorption of cadmium in paddy soil and increase its bioaccessibility and bioavailability

Microplastics (MPs) usually coexist with heavy metals (HMs) in soil. MPs can influence HMs mobility and bioavailability, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Here, polyethylene and polypropylene MPs were selected to investigate their effects and mechanisms of sorption-desorption, bioaccessibility and bioavailability of cadmium (Cd) in paddy soil. Batch experiments indicated that MPs significantly reduced the Cd sorption in soil (p < 0.05). Accordingly, soil with the MPs had lower boundary diffusion constant of Cd (C₁= 0.847∼₁.020) and the Freundlich sorption constant (K_F = 0.444-0.616) than that without the MPs (C₁ = 0.894∼₁.035, K_F = 0.500-0.655). X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses suggested that the MPs reduced Cd chemisorption, by covering the soil active sites and thus blocking complexation of Cd with active oxygen sites and interrupting the formation of CdCO₃ and Cd₃P₂ precipitates. Such effects of MPs enhanced about 1.2-1.5 times of Cd bioaccessibility and bioavailability in soil. Almost the same effects but different mechanisms of polyethylene and polypropylene MPs on Cd sorption in the soil indicated the complexity and pervasiveness of their effects. The findings provide new insights into impacts of MPs on the fate and risk of HMs in agricultural soil.

Heavy metals and metalloid in aquatic invertebrates: A review of single/mixed forms, combination with other pollutants, and environmental factors

Heavy metals (HMs) and metalloid occur naturally and are found throughout the Earth's crust but they are discharged into aquatic environments at high concentrations by human activities, increasing heavy metal pollution. HMs can bioaccumulate in higher organisms through the food web and consequently affect humans. In an aquatic environment, various HMs mixtures can be present. Furthermore, HMs adsorb on other environmental pollutants, such as microplastics and persistent organic pollutants, causing a synergistic or antagonistic effect on aquatic organisms. Therefore, to understand the biological and physiological effects of HMs on aquatic organisms, it is important to evaluate the effects of exposure to combinations of complex HM mixtures and/or pollutants and other environmental factors. Aquatic invertebrates occupy an important niche in the aquatic food chain as the main energy link between higher and lower organisms. The distribution of heavy metals and the resulting toxic effects in aquatic invertebrates have been extensively studied, but few reports have dealt with the relationship between HMs, pollutants, and environmental factors in biological systems with regard to biological availability and toxicity. This review describes the overall properties of individual HM and their effects on aquatic invertebrates and comprehensively reviews physiological and biochemical endpoints in aquatic invertebrates depending on interactions among HMs, other pollutants, and environmental factors.

Dose optimization of silicon for boosting arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi colonization and cadmium stress mitigation in maize (Zea mays L.)

The foliar applied silicon (Si) has the potential to ameliorate heavy metals, especially cadmium (Cd) toxicity; however, Si dose optimization is strategically important for boosting the growth of soil microbes and Cd stress mitigation. Thus, the current research was performed to assess the Si-induced physiochemical and antioxidant trait alterations along with Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (VAM) status in maize roots under Cd stress. The trial included foliar Si application at the rate of 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 ppm while Cd stress (at the rate of 20 ppm) was induced after full germination of maize seed. The response variables included various physiochemical traits such as leaf pigments, protein, and sugar contents along with VAM alterations under induced Cd stress. The results revealed that exogenous application of Si in higher doses remained effective in improving the leaf pigments, proline, soluble sugar, total proteins, and all free amino acids. Additionally, the same treatment remained unmatched in terms of antioxidant activity compared to lower doses of foliar-applied Si. Moreover, VAM was recorded to be at peak under 20 ppm Si treatment. Thus, these encouraging findings may serve as a baseline to develop Si foliar application as a biologically viable mitigation strategy for maize grown in Cd toxicity soils. Overall, the exogenous application of Si helpful for reducing the uptake of Cd in maize and also improving the mycorrhizal association as well as the philological mechanism and antioxidant activities in plant under cadmium stress conditions. Also, future studies must test more doses concerning to varying Cd stress levels along with determining the most responsive crop stage for Si foliar application.

UV-aged microplastics induces neurotoxicity by affecting the neurotransmission in larval zebrafish

Microplastics (MPs) are nearly ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems and may affect aquatic organisms. In this study, virgin and aged polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) of size 1 μm were selected to analyze their adverse effects on larvae zebrafish. Exposure to PS-MPs significantly reduced the average swimming speed of zebrafish, and the behavioral effects caused by aged PS-MPs on zebrafish were more pronounced. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that 10-100 μg/L of PS-MPs accumulated in tissues of zebrafish. As an endpoint of neurotransmitter concentration, exposure to aged PS-MPs at doses ranging from 0.1 to 100 μg/L significantly increased the dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and acetylcholine (ACh) levels in zebrafish. Similarly, exposure to aged PS-MPs significantly altered the expression of genes related to these neurotransmitters (e.g., dat, 5ht1aa, and gabral genes). According to Pearson correlation analyses, neurotransmissions was significantly correlated with neurotoxic effects of aged PS-MPs. Thus, aged PS-MPs cause neurotoxicity in zebrafish through their effects on DA, 5-HT, GABA, and ACh neurotransmissions. The results highlight the importance of the neurotoxicity of aged PS-MPs in zebrafish, which has important implications for the risk assessment of aged MPs and the conservation of aquatic ecosystems.

Integrative Evaluation of the Ecological Hazards by Microplastics and Heavy Metals in Wetland Ecosystem

This study was performed to evaluate the impact of microplastics and heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni) on sediments, water, aquatic plants (Pistia stratiotes, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and Ipomoea carnea), and fish (Labeo rohita) samples collected from five different sites in the Bajwat wetlands in Sialkot, Pakistan. The concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Cr were above the permissible limits devised by WHO in all the ecosystem components (i.e. sediments, water, plants, and fish) at all sites. The maximum amount of microplastic particles (2317 microplastic particles per kg of sediments) was recorded at Site 1. The filaments were the most commonly found type of microplastics. Plants and fish samples also showed considerable concentration of metals. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed anthropogenic sources of elevated concentrations of metal elements which could cause adverse biological effects in the ecosystem.

Single and combined effects of microplastics and cadmium on the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus

Microplastic pollution of the ocean has received extensive attention as plastic pollution increases globally, but the potential ecological risks caused by microplastic interactions with trace metals still require further research. In this study, Apostichopus japonicus was used to explore the individual and combined toxicities of cadmium (Cd) and microplastics and their effects on growth, Cd tissue accumulation, digestive enzymes, and gut microbes. The body weight gain and specific growth rate of animals exposed to a combination of high concentrations of Cd and microplastics decreased. The addition of high concentrations of cadmium to the diet led to an increase in cadmium content in the respiratory tree, digestive tract and body wall. Amylase, lipase and trypsin decreased to different degrees in the group treated with high concentrations of Cd/microplastics. Firmicutes were significantly reduced across multiple treatment groups, with the order Lactobacillales being the most significantly affected. Cd is the pollutant causing the greatest negative impact, but the presence of microplastics undoubtedly increases its toxicity.

Adsorption of heavy metals on biodegradable and conventional microplastics in the Pearl River Estuary, China

In recent years, microplastics (MPs) as emerging carriers for environmental pollutants have attracted increasing worldwide attention. However, the adsorption of heavy metals on MPs, especially for biodegradable MPs, has been still poorly understood in estuarine environments. In this study, we investigated the aging of biodegradable and conventional MPs in the Pearl River Estuary after long-term exposure and their impacts on the adsorption of heavy metals from seawater. The results showed that the changes in surface characteristics were more prominent on biodegradable MPs than on conventional MPs after aging. Both biodegradable and conventional MPs could adsorb heavy metals, and their adsorption capacities fluctuated greatly on different MPs and different exposure times. The adsorption capacities of Cu, Pb, and As on biodegradable MPs were higher than those on conventional MPs, whereas Mn, Cr, and Co had lower adsorption on biodegradable MPs after 9-12 months by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The aging characteristics (CI, O/C, and X_c) of MPs accounted for a contribution of 51.0% on heavy metal adsorption, while the environmental factors (temperature, salinity, pH, and heavy metal concentration) only contributed to 13.2%. Therefore, the present study can provide important evidence on the environmental behaviors and ecological risks of biodegradable and conventional MPs in estuarine systems.

The Minderoo-Monaco Commission on Plastics and Human Health

Background

Plastics have conveyed great benefits to humanity and made possible some of the most significant advances of modern civilization in fields as diverse as medicine, electronics, aerospace, construction, food packaging, and sports. It is now clear, however, that plastics are also responsible for significant harms to human health, the economy, and the earth's environment. These harms occur at every stage of the plastic life cycle, from extraction of the coal, oil, and gas that are its main feedstocks through to ultimate disposal into the environment. The extent of these harms not been systematically assessed, their magnitude not fully quantified, and their economic costs not comprehensively counted.

Goals

The goals of this Minderoo-Monaco Commission on Plastics and Human Health are to comprehensively examine plastics' impacts across their life cycle on: (1) human health and well-being; (2) the global environment, especially the ocean; (3) the economy; and (4) vulnerable populations-the poor, minorities, and the world's children. On the basis of this examination, the Commission offers science-based recommendations designed to support development of a Global Plastics Treaty, protect human health, and save lives.

Report Structure

This Commission report contains seven Sections. Following an Introduction, Section 2 presents a narrative review of the processes involved in plastic production, use, and disposal and notes the hazards to human health and the environment associated with each of these stages. Section 3 describes plastics' impacts on the ocean and notes the potential for plastic in the ocean to enter the marine food web and result in human exposure. Section 4 details plastics' impacts on human health. Section 5 presents a first-order estimate of plastics' health-related economic costs. Section 6 examines the intersection between plastic, social inequity, and environmental injustice. Section 7 presents the Commission's findings and recommendations.

Plastics

Plastics are complex, highly heterogeneous, synthetic chemical materials. Over 98% of plastics are produced from fossil carbon- coal, oil and gas. Plastics are comprised of a carbon-based polymer backbone and thousands of additional chemicals that are incorporated into polymers to convey specific properties such as color, flexibility, stability, water repellence, flame retardation, and ultraviolet resistance. Many of these added chemicals are highly toxic. They include carcinogens, neurotoxicants and endocrine disruptors such as phthalates, bisphenols, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), brominated flame retardants, and organophosphate flame retardants. They are integral components of plastic and are responsible for many of plastics' harms to human health and the environment.Global plastic production has increased almost exponentially since World War II, and in this time more than 8,300 megatons (Mt) of plastic have been manufactured. Annual production volume has grown from under 2 Mt in 1950 to 460 Mt in 2019, a 230-fold increase, and is on track to triple by 2060. More than half of all plastic ever made has been produced since 2002. Single-use plastics account for 35-40% of current plastic production and represent the most rapidly growing segment of plastic manufacture.Explosive recent growth in plastics production reflects a deliberate pivot by the integrated multinational fossil-carbon corporations that produce coal, oil and gas and that also manufacture plastics. These corporations are reducing their production of fossil fuels and increasing plastics manufacture. The two principal factors responsible for this pivot are decreasing global demand for carbon-based fuels due to increases in 'green' energy, and massive expansion of oil and gas production due to fracking.Plastic manufacture is energy-intensive and contributes significantly to climate change. At present, plastic production is responsible for an estimated 3.7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than the contribution of Brazil. This fraction is projected to increase to 4.5% by 2060 if current trends continue unchecked.

Plastic Life Cycle

The plastic life cycle has three phases: production, use, and disposal. In production, carbon feedstocks-coal, gas, and oil-are transformed through energy-intensive, catalytic processes into a vast array of products. Plastic use occurs in every aspect of modern life and results in widespread human exposure to the chemicals contained in plastic. Single-use plastics constitute the largest portion of current use, followed by synthetic fibers and construction.Plastic disposal is highly inefficient, with recovery and recycling rates below 10% globally. The result is that an estimated 22 Mt of plastic waste enters the environment each year, much of it single-use plastic and are added to the more than 6 gigatons of plastic waste that have accumulated since 1950. Strategies for disposal of plastic waste include controlled and uncontrolled landfilling, open burning, thermal conversion, and export. Vast quantities of plastic waste are exported each year from high-income to low-income countries, where it accumulates in landfills, pollutes air and water, degrades vital ecosystems, befouls beaches and estuaries, and harms human health-environmental injustice on a global scale. Plastic-laden e-waste is particularly problematic.

Environmental Findings

Plastics and plastic-associated chemicals are responsible for widespread pollution. They contaminate aquatic (marine and freshwater), terrestrial, and atmospheric environments globally. The ocean is the ultimate destination for much plastic, and plastics are found throughout the ocean, including coastal regions, the sea surface, the deep sea, and polar sea ice. Many plastics appear to resist breakdown in the ocean and could persist in the global environment for decades. Macro- and micro-plastic particles have been identified in hundreds of marine species in all major taxa, including species consumed by humans. Trophic transfer of microplastic particles and the chemicals within them has been demonstrated. Although microplastic particles themselves (>10 µm) appear not to undergo biomagnification, hydrophobic plastic-associated chemicals bioaccumulate in marine animals and biomagnify in marine food webs. The amounts and fates of smaller microplastic and nanoplastic particles (MNPs <10 µm) in aquatic environments are poorly understood, but the potential for harm is worrying given their mobility in biological systems. Adverse environmental impacts of plastic pollution occur at multiple levels from molecular and biochemical to population and ecosystem. MNP contamination of seafood results in direct, though not well quantified, human exposure to plastics and plastic-associated chemicals. Marine plastic pollution endangers the ocean ecosystems upon which all humanity depends for food, oxygen, livelihood, and well-being.

Human Health Findings

Coal miners, oil workers and gas field workers who extract fossil carbon feedstocks for plastic production suffer increased mortality from traumatic injury, coal workers' pneumoconiosis, silicosis, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Plastic production workers are at increased risk of leukemia, lymphoma, hepatic angiosarcoma, brain cancer, breast cancer, mesothelioma, neurotoxic injury, and decreased fertility. Workers producing plastic textiles die of bladder cancer, lung cancer, mesothelioma, and interstitial lung disease at increased rates. Plastic recycling workers have increased rates of cardiovascular disease, toxic metal poisoning, neuropathy, and lung cancer. Residents of "fenceline" communities adjacent to plastic production and waste disposal sites experience increased risks of premature birth, low birth weight, asthma, childhood leukemia, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer.During use and also in disposal, plastics release toxic chemicals including additives and residual monomers into the environment and into people. National biomonitoring surveys in the USA document population-wide exposures to these chemicals. Plastic additives disrupt endocrine function and increase risk for premature births, neurodevelopmental disorders, male reproductive birth defects, infertility, obesity, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, and cancers. Chemical-laden MNPs formed through the environmental degradation of plastic waste can enter living organisms, including humans. Emerging, albeit still incomplete evidence indicates that MNPs may cause toxicity due to their physical and toxicological effects as well as by acting as vectors that transport toxic chemicals and bacterial pathogens into tissues and cells.Infants in the womb and young children are two populations at particularly high risk of plastic-related health effects. Because of the exquisite sensitivity of early development to hazardous chemicals and children's unique patterns of exposure, plastic-associated exposures are linked to increased risks of prematurity, stillbirth, low birth weight, birth defects of the reproductive organs, neurodevelopmental impairment, impaired lung growth, and childhood cancer. Early-life exposures to plastic-associated chemicals also increase the risk of multiple non-communicable diseases later in life.

Economic Findings

Plastic's harms to human health result in significant economic costs. We estimate that in 2015 the health-related costs of plastic production exceeded $250 billion (2015 Int$) globally, and that in the USA alone the health costs of disease and disability caused by the plastic-associated chemicals PBDE, BPA and DEHP exceeded $920 billion (2015 Int$). Plastic production results in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions equivalent to 1.96 gigatons of carbon dioxide (CO2e) annually. Using the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) social cost of carbon metric, we estimate the annual costs of these GHG emissions to be $341 billion (2015 Int$).These costs, large as they are, almost certainly underestimate the full economic losses resulting from plastics' negative impacts on human health and the global environment. All of plastics' economic costs-and also its social costs-are externalized by the petrochemical and plastic manufacturing industry and are borne by citizens, taxpayers, and governments in countries around the world without compensation.

Social Justice Findings

The adverse effects of plastics and plastic pollution on human health, the economy and the environment are not evenly distributed. They disproportionately affect poor, disempowered, and marginalized populations such as workers, racial and ethnic minorities, "fenceline" communities, Indigenous groups, women, and children, all of whom had little to do with creating the current plastics crisis and lack the political influence or the resources to address it. Plastics' harmful impacts across its life cycle are most keenly felt in the Global South, in small island states, and in disenfranchised areas in the Global North. Social and environmental justice (SEJ) principles require reversal of these inequitable burdens to ensure that no group bears a disproportionate share of plastics' negative impacts and that those who benefit economically from plastic bear their fair share of its currently externalized costs.

Conclusions

It is now clear that current patterns of plastic production, use, and disposal are not sustainable and are responsible for significant harms to human health, the environment, and the economy as well as for deep societal injustices.The main driver of these worsening harms is an almost exponential and still accelerating increase in global plastic production. Plastics' harms are further magnified by low rates of recovery and recycling and by the long persistence of plastic waste in the environment.The thousands of chemicals in plastics-monomers, additives, processing agents, and non-intentionally added substances-include amongst their number known human carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, neurotoxicants, and persistent organic pollutants. These chemicals are responsible for many of plastics' known harms to human and planetary health. The chemicals leach out of plastics, enter the environment, cause pollution, and result in human exposure and disease. All efforts to reduce plastics' hazards must address the hazards of plastic-associated chemicals.

Recommendations

To protect human and planetary health, especially the health of vulnerable and at-risk populations, and put the world on track to end plastic pollution by 2040, this Commission supports urgent adoption by the world's nations of a strong and comprehensive Global Plastics Treaty in accord with the mandate set forth in the March 2022 resolution of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).International measures such as a Global Plastics Treaty are needed to curb plastic production and pollution, because the harms to human health and the environment caused by plastics, plastic-associated chemicals and plastic waste transcend national boundaries, are planetary in their scale, and have disproportionate impacts on the health and well-being of people in the world's poorest nations. Effective implementation of the Global Plastics Treaty will require that international action be coordinated and complemented by interventions at the national, regional, and local levels.This Commission urges that a cap on global plastic production with targets, timetables, and national contributions be a central provision of the Global Plastics Treaty. We recommend inclusion of the following additional provisions:The Treaty needs to extend beyond microplastics and marine litter to include all of the many thousands of chemicals incorporated into plastics.The Treaty needs to include a provision banning or severely restricting manufacture and use of unnecessary, avoidable, and problematic plastic items, especially single-use items such as manufactured plastic microbeads.The Treaty needs to include requirements on extended producer responsibility (EPR) that make fossil carbon producers, plastic producers, and the manufacturers of plastic products legally and financially responsible for the safety and end-of-life management of all the materials they produce and sell.The Treaty needs to mandate reductions in the chemical complexity of plastic products; health-protective standards for plastics and plastic additives; a requirement for use of sustainable non-toxic materials; full disclosure of all components; and traceability of components. International cooperation will be essential to implementing and enforcing these standards.The Treaty needs to include SEJ remedies at each stage of the plastic life cycle designed to fill gaps in community knowledge and advance both distributional and procedural equity.This Commission encourages inclusion in the Global Plastic Treaty of a provision calling for exploration of listing at least some plastic polymers as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention.This Commission encourages a strong interface between the Global Plastics Treaty and the Basel and London Conventions to enhance management of hazardous plastic waste and slow current massive exports of plastic waste into the world's least-developed countries.This Commission recommends the creation of a Permanent Science Policy Advisory Body to guide the Treaty's implementation. The main priorities of this Body would be to guide Member States and other stakeholders in evaluating which solutions are most effective in reducing plastic consumption, enhancing plastic waste recovery and recycling, and curbing the generation of plastic waste. This Body could also assess trade-offs among these solutions and evaluate safer alternatives to current plastics. It could monitor the transnational export of plastic waste. It could coordinate robust oceanic-, land-, and air-based MNP monitoring programs.This Commission recommends urgent investment by national governments in research into solutions to the global plastic crisis. This research will need to determine which solutions are most effective and cost-effective in the context of particular countries and assess the risks and benefits of proposed solutions. Oceanographic and environmental research is needed to better measure concentrations and impacts of plastics <10 µm and understand their distribution and fate in the global environment. Biomedical research is needed to elucidate the human health impacts of plastics, especially MNPs.

Summary

This Commission finds that plastics are both a boon to humanity and a stealth threat to human and planetary health. Plastics convey enormous benefits, but current linear patterns of plastic production, use, and disposal that pay little attention to sustainable design or safe materials and a near absence of recovery, reuse, and recycling are responsible for grave harms to health, widespread environmental damage, great economic costs, and deep societal injustices. These harms are rapidly worsening.While there remain gaps in knowledge about plastics' harms and uncertainties about their full magnitude, the evidence available today demonstrates unequivocally that these impacts are great and that they will increase in severity in the absence of urgent and effective intervention at global scale. Manufacture and use of essential plastics may continue. However, reckless increases in plastic production, and especially increases in the manufacture of an ever-increasing array of unnecessary single-use plastic products, need to be curbed.Global intervention against the plastic crisis is needed now because the costs of failure to act will be immense.

Polyethylene and poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)-based biodegradable microplastics modulate the bioavailability and speciation of Cd and As in soil: Insights into transformation mechanisms

Microplastics (MPs) that enter the soil can alter the physicochemical and biochemical properties of soil and affect speciation of heavy metals (HMs), thereby perturbing the bioavailability of HMs. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are not understood. Therefore, we investigated the effects of MPs from poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)-based biodegradable mulch (BM) and polyethylene mulch (PM) in Cd- or As-contaminated soil on soil properties and speciation of HMs. MPs were characterised using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The addition of MPs reduced the bioavailability of HMs in soil and promoted the transformation of HMs into inert fractions. The mechanisms underlying the reduction of the bioavailability of HMs in soils could be as follows: (1) the entry of MPs into the soil changed its properties, which reduced the bioavailability of HMs; (2) FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and benzene ring present on the surface of aged MPs stabilized complexes (As(V)-O) with As(V) may have directly reduced the bioavailability of As(V) in soil; (3) aged BM exposed more amounts and types of reactive functional groups and was more effective in stabilising soil HMs than PM. Overall, this study provides new insights regarding the complexation mechanisms of soil HMs by MPs from different plastic mulch sources.

Impact of plastic mulching as a major source of microplastics in agroecosystems

The contamination of agroecosystems by microplastics (MPs) has raised great concerns recently. Plastic mulching has contributed a lot in the building of MP pollution in farmlands. This technique has been in use for decades worldwide because of its immense advantages, preferably in drier and colder regions. The physical extraction of plastic mulches at the end of the growing season is very laborious and ineffective, and thus small pieces of mulches are left in the field which later convert into MP particles after aging, weathering, or on exposure to solar radiation. MPs not only influence physical, chemical, or biological properties of soils but also reduce crop productivity which could be a threat to our food security. They also interact with and accumulate other environmental contaminants such as microbial pathogens, heavy metals, and persistent organic pollutants on their surfaces which increase their risk of toxicity in the environment. MPs also transfer from one trophic level to the other in the food chain and ultimately may impact human health. Because of the ineffectiveness of the recovery of plastic film fragments from fields, researchers are now mainly focusing on alternative solutions to conventional plastic mulch films such as the use of biodegradable mulches. In this review, we have discussed the issue of plastic mulch films in agroecosystems and tried to link already existing knowledge to the current limitations in research on this topic from cropland soils and future prospects have been identified and proposed.

Remediation plan of nano/microplastic toxicity in food

Microplastic pollution is causing a stir globally due to its persistent and ubiquitous nature. The scientific collaboration is diligently working on improved, effective, sustainable, and cleaner measures to control the nano/microplastic load in the environment especially wrecking the aquatic habitat. This chapter discusses the challenges encountered in nano/microplastic control and improved technologies like density separation, continuous flow centrifugation, oil extraction protocol, electrostatic separation to extract and quantify the same. Although it is still in the early stages of research, biobased control measures, like meal worms and microbes to degrade microplastics in the environment have been proven effective. Besides the control measures, practical alternatives to microplastics can be developed like core-shell powder, mineral powder, and biobased food packaging systems like edible films and coatings developed using various nanotechnological tools. Lastly, the existing and ideal stage of global regulations is compared, and key research areas are pinpointed. This holistic coverage would enable manufacturers and consumers to reconsider their production and purchase decisions for sustainable development goals.

Microbial engineering strategies for synthetic microplastics clean up: A review on recent approaches

Microplastics are the small fragments of the plastic molecules which find their applications in various routine products such as beauty products. Later, it was realized that it has several toxic effects on marine and terrestrial organisms. This review is an approach in understanding the microplastics, their origin, dispersal in the aquatic system, their biodegradation and factors affecting biodegradation. In addition, the paper discusses the major engineering approaches applied in microbial biotechnology. Specifically, it reviews microbial genetic engineering, such as PET-ase engineering, MHET-ase engineering, and immobilization approaches. Moreover, the major challenges associated with the plastic removal are presented by evaluating the recent reports available.

Ecological health risk assessment of microplastics and heavy metals in sediments, water, hydrophytes (Alternanthera philoxeroides, Typha latifolia, and Ipomoea carnea), and fish (Labeo rohita) in Marala wetlands in Sialkot, Pakistan

For the ecological risk assessment of heavy metals and microplastics in Marala wetlands in Sialkot, Pakistan, samples of sediments, water, aquatic plants (Alternanthera philoxeroides, Typha latifolia, and Ipomoea carnea), and fish (Labeo rohita) were studied from five different locations. Pb, Cd, and Cr concentrations were above permissible limits devised by WHO in sediments and water at most of sites. High concentrations of Cd were recorded in water samples compared to sediments with maximum values recorded at Site-2 (52.08 ± 9.55 mg kg-1) and Site-5 (62.29 ± 10.12 mg kg-1). The maximum concentrations of Cr (7.23 ± 0.40 mg kg-1) and Pb (22.87 ± 0.83 mg kg-1) were found at Site-4 in water samples. The maximum abundance of microplastics (3047 pieces kg-1 of sediments) was at Site-1 with filaments in the highest proportion among the other types. Zn, Ni, and Cu remained generally low in concentrations in both sediments and waters. Plants showed accumulation of heavy metals, notably the amount of Cd (33.36 ± 0.26 mgkg-1) and Ni (163.3 ± 1.30 mgkg-1) absorbed by T. latifolia and A. philoxeroides, respectively were high. Also, photosynthetic pigments in plants seemed to be affected. However, estimated daily intake (EDI) and provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) calculations for the human population consuming fish from this wetland remained below the FAO/WHO limits. PCA analysis revealed the anthropogenic origin of metals that might be causing adverse effects on the biota which depend on this wetland for their food.

Understanding the underestimated: Occurrence, distribution, and interactions of microplastics in the sediment and soil of China, India, and Japan

Microplastics (MPs) are non-biodegradable substances that can sustain our environment for up to a century. What is more worrying is the incapability of modern technologies to annihilate MPs from om environment. One ramification of MPs is their impact on every kind of life form on this planet, which has been discussed ahead; that is why these substances are surfacing in everyday discussions of scholars and researchers. This paper discusses the overview of the global occurrence, abundance, analysis, and remediation techniques of MPs in the environment. This paper primarily reviews the event and abundance of MPs in coastal sediments and agricultural soil of three major Asian countries, India, China, and Japan. A significant concentration of MPs has been recorded from these countries, which affirms its strong presence and subsequent environmental impacts. Concentrations such as 73,100 MPs/kg in Indian coastal sediments and 42,960 particles/kg in the agricultural soil of China is a solid testimony to prove their massive outbreak in our environment and require urgent attention towards this issue. Conclusions show that human activities, rivers, and plastic mulching on agricultural fields have majorly acted as carriers of MPs towards coastal and terrestrial soil and sediments. Later, based on recorded concentrations and gaps, future research studies are recommended in the concerned domain; a dearth of studies on MPs influencing Indian agricultural soil make a whole sector and its consumer vulnerable to the adverse effects of this emerging contaminant.

Transcriptomic and metabolomic changes in lettuce triggered by microplastics-stress

Microplastics (MPs) are a global threat to the environment, and plant uptake of MP particles (≤0.2 μm) is a particular cause for concern. However, physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying MP-induced growth inhibition need to be clarified. Towards this goal, we conducted a hydroponic experiment to investigate the accumulation of MPs, changes in physiology, gene expression, and metabolites in lettuce from a series of concentrations of fluorescence-labelled polystyrene MPs (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 mg L-1, ∼0.2 μm). Our results showed that MPs accumulated in the lettuce root tips and leaf veins, resulting in the hypertonic injury of lettuce, and the down-regulation of genes related to ion homeostasis. Stress-related genes were up-regulated, and sphingolipid metabolism increased in response to MP additions, causing increased biosynthesis of ascorbic acid, terpenoid, and flavonoids in root exudates. Our findings provide a molecular-scale perspective on the response of leafy vegetables to MP-stress at a range of concentrations. This enables more comprehensive evaluation of the risks of MPs to human health and the ecological environment.

Microplastics and their interactions with microbiota

As a new pollutant, Microplastics (MPs) are globally known for their negative impacts on different ecosystems and living organisms. MPs are easily taken up by the ecosystem in a variety of organisms due to their small size, and cause immunological, neurological, and respiratory diseases in the impacted organism. Moreover, in the impacted environments, MPs can release toxic additives and act as a vector and scaffold for colonization and transportation of specific microbes and lead to imbalances in microbiota and the biogeochemical and nutrients dynamic. To address the concerns on controlling the MPs pollution on the microbiota and ecosystem, the microbial biodegradation of MPs can be potentially considered as an effective environment friendly approach. The objectives of the presented paper are to provide information on the toxicological effects of MPs on microbiota, to discuss the negative impacts of microbial colonization of MPs, and to introduce the microbes with biodegradation ability of MPs.

The effect of polystyrene microplastic and biosolid application on the toxicity and bioaccumulation of cadmium for Enchytraeus crypticus

Plastics smaller than 5 mm that end up in a soil environment are known as microplastics (MPs). Microplastics have become a common contaminant in agricultural areas in addition to metals. However, the effect of cadmium (Cd) on soil organisms has not been clearly defined in the presence of MPs. In addition to MPs, biosolid application as a soil amendment in agricultural lands is also leading to shifts in soil conditions, such as the concentrations of nutrients and organic matter. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the toxicity and bioaccumulation of Cd for Enchytraeus crypticus in the presence of polystyrene (PS)-MPs and biosolids to provide insight into their possible interactions. The lethal toxic concentration (LC50) for Cd was higher than 650 mg Cd/kg dry soil for all conditions. The presence of PS-MPs increased the toxicity of Cd for which EC50 was 102 and 38 mg Cd/kg dry soil without and with Cd, respectively, which may be the result of an increased exposure rate through adsorption of Cd on PS-MPs. On the contrary, the presence of biosolids decreased the toxicity of Cd where EC50 was 193 and 473 mg Cd/kg dry soil for the sets applied with 0.6 and 0.9 g biosolids, respectively. Coexistence of biosolids and PS-MPs decreased the reproduction toxicity of Cd, which is similar to the biosolid effect (EC50 is 305 mg Cd/kg dry soil). Bioaccumulation of Cd only positively correlated with its initial concentration in soil and was not affected by the presence of PS-MPs or biosolids. A review on multi-synergistic transition metal oxide systems towards arsenic treatment: Near molecular analysis of surface-complexation (synchrotron studies/modeling tools)

The science and interface chemistry between the arsenic (As) anions and the different adsorbent systems have been gaining interest in recent years in environmental remediation applications. Metal-oxides and the corresponding hybrid systems have shown promising performance as novel adsorbents in various treatment technologies. The abundance, surface chemistry, high surface area (active-centres), various synthesis and functionalization methodologies, and good recyclability make these metal oxide-based nanomaterials as potential remediating agents for As oxyanions. This work critically reviews eight different platforms focused on the arsenic contamination issue, where the first classification describes the origin of arsenic contamination and presents geographical and demo-graphical considerations. The following section briefs the state-of-the-art remediation techniques for arsenic treatment with a comparative evaluation. An emphasized discussion has been provided regarding the adsorption and classification of various metal oxide adsorbents. In the next classification, various multi-synergism abilities like Redox activity, Surface functional groups, Surface area/morphology, Heterogeneous catalysis, Reactive oxygen species, Photo-catalytic/electro-catalytic reactions, and Electrosorption are detailed. The classification of various characterization tools for accessing the arsenic remediation qualitatively and quantitatively are given in the fifth chapter. The first-of-its-kind dedicated analysis has been given on the surface complexation aspects of the arsenic speciation onto various metal adsorbent systems using synchrotron results, surface-complexation modeling, and molecular simulation (e.g., DFT) in the sixth chapter. The current sensing applications of these novel nano-material systems for arsenic determination using colorimetric and electrochemical-based analytical tools and a note about the economic parameters, i.e., regeneration aspects of various adsorbent systems/the sustainable applications of the treated sludge materials, are provided in the final sections. This work makes a critical analysis of 'Environmental Nanotechnology' towards 'Arsenic Treatment'.

Photoaging mechanisms of microplastics mediated by dissolved organic matter in an iron-rich aquatic environment

As emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have aroused worldwide concern due to their ubiquitous distribution, environmental persistence, and potential ecological risks. However, the ageing mechanisms, environmental behaviours and risks of photoaged MPs mediated by environmental factors remain obscure. Herein, systems containing a light source, humic acid (HA) and Fe were established to investigate the natural photoaging process of MPs including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The dehydrochlorination reaction of PVC-MP was inhibited by HA and Fe, which resulted from the coeffect of photon competition, excited state quenching, radical deactivation or transformation, and defect structure destruction. In contrast, the enhanced fluorescence effect suggested that the photooxidation reactions of PET-MP were promoted by HA and Fe. Therefore, the presence of HA and Fe in the environment inhibited the photoreduction of MPs while favoring the photooxidative process. Additionally, the adsorption capacity for 17α-ethinylestradiol and the cytotoxicity of MPs were increased after ageing in the hv + HA and hv + HA + Fe systems, which was attributed to the changes in morphology, elements and functional groups. This study provided new insight into the ageing behaviours of MPs in the natural environment with widespread dissolved organic matter and Fe.

Transgenerational impacts of micro(nano)plastics in the aquatic and terrestrial environment

Plastic particles of diameters ranging from 1 to 1000 nm and > 1 µm to 5 mm are respectively known as nanoplastics and microplastics, and are collectively termed micro(nano)plastics (MNPs). They are ubiquitously present in aquatic and terrestrial environments, posing adverse multifaceted ecological impacts. Recent transgenerational studies have demonstrated that MNPs negatively impact both the exposed parents and their unexposed generations. Therefore, this review summarizes the available research on the transgenerational impacts of MNPs in aquatic and terrestrial organisms, induced by exposure to MNPs alone or in combination with other organic and inorganic chemicals. The most commonly reported transgenerational effects of MNPs include tissue bioaccumulation and transfer, affecting organisms' survival, growth, reproduction, and energy metabolism; inducing oxidative stress; enzyme and genetic responses; and causing tissue damage. Similarly, co-exposure to MNPs and chemicals (organic and inorganic pollutants) significantly impacts survival, growth, and reproduction and induces oxidative stress, thyroid disruption, and genetic toxicity in organisms. The characteristics of MNPs (degree of aging, size, shape, polymer type, and concentration), exposure type and duration (parental exposure vs. multigenerational exposure and acute exposure vs. chronic exposure), and MNP-chemical interactions are the main factors affecting transgenerational impacts. Selecting MNP properties based on their realistic environmental behavior, employing more diverse animal models, and considering chronic exposure and MNP-chemical mixture exposure are salient research prospects for an in-depth understanding of the transgenerational impacts of MNPs.

Microplastics and plastics-associated contaminants in food and beverages; Global trends, concentrations, and human exposure

Microplastics has become a global concern due to their ubiquitous presence which poses unavoidable human exposure risks. Geographical distribution and yearly trends of research on microplastics, food, and beverages do not exist. Thus, no overall account is available regarding the presence of microplastics and plastics-associated contaminants in food and beverages. Hence, this attempt is to review the geographical distribution of studies through a brief bibliometric analysis and the plastics-associated contaminants including plasticizers and microplastics in food and beverages. Estimated microplastic consumption has been listed for the pool of publications reviewed here. Further, this review discusses the ingestion potency of micropollutants associated with microplastics, possible health impacts, and existing challenges. Global trend in research exponentially increased after 2018 and China is leading. Studies on microplastics were limited to a few beverages and food; milk, beer, tea, refreshing drinks, salt, sugar, honey, etc., whereas seafood and drinking water have been extensively studied. Publications on plastic-additives were reported in two ways; migration of plastic-additives from packaging by leaching and the presence of plastic-additives in food and beverages. Bisphenol A and bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate were the most frequently reported both in food and beverages. Exposure of packaging material to high temperatures predominantly involves plastic-additive contamination in food and beverages. Microplastics-bound micropollutants can also be ingested through food and beverages; however, a lack of knowledge exists. The complex matrix of food or beverages and the absence of standard procedures for analysis of microplastics and micropollutants exist as challenges. More investigations on the presence of microplastics and plastic-additives in food and beverage are urgent needs to a better assessment of potential human exposure and human health risk.

Distinct responses of Chlorella vulgaris upon combined exposure to microplastics and bivalent zinc

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are ubiquitous pollutants in the aquatic environment. In this study, the sorption behavior of two typical MPs (PVC and PE) to bivalent zinc ions (Zn(II)) and their combined toxic effects on Chlorella vulgaris were systemically studied. The growth inhibition rate, the activities of photosynthesis and antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT), the cell membrane integrity and the cell apoptosis rate were employed to evaluate the toxicity. Our result showed that PVC and PE have different adsorption capacities for Zn(II), and the combined exposure to Zn(II) and MPs had distinct patterns on the inhibition of the cell growth and induction of oxidative stress. Under our experimental concentrations, PE and Zn(II) showed a synergistic effect, while PVC and Zn(II) exhibited an antagonistic effect. Finally, an action mechanism was proposed to explain the experimental phenomena. This study demonstrated that flow cytometry can be a powerful tool to study the toxic effect of MP composites, and MPs can not only allow a free ride for the water contaminants, but also remarkably alter their toxic effects on phytoplankton. These effects deserve further consideration during evaluation of ecological risks of MPs in the water environment.

Pro-Inflammatory and Cytotoxic Effects of Polystyrene Microplastics on Human and Murine Intestinal Cell Lines

Plastic is a polymer extremely resistant to degradation that can remain for up to hundreds or thousands of years, leading to the accumulation of massive amounts of plastic waste throughout the planet's ecosystems. Due to exposure to various environmental factors, plastic breaks down into smaller particles named microplastics (1-5000 μm) and nanoplastics (<1 μm). Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous pollutants but, still, little is known about their effects on human and animal health. Herein, our aim is to investigate cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation and correlated gene modulation following exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in HRT-18 and CMT-93 epithelial cell lines. After 6, 24 and 48 h PS-MPs treatment, cell viability (MTT) and oxidative stress (SOD) assays were performed; subsequently, expression changes and cytokines release were investigated by Real-Time PCR and Magnetic-beads panel Multiplex Assay, respectively. For each exposure time, a significantly increased cytotoxicity was observed in both cell lines, whereas SOD activity increased only in CMT-93 cells. Furthermore, Magnetic-beads Multiplex Assay revealed an increased release of IL-8 in HRT-18 cells' medium, also confirmed by gene expression analysis. Results obtained suggest the presence of a pro-inflammatory pattern induced by PS-MPs treatment that could be related to the observed increase in cytotoxicity.

Recent consequences of micro-nanaoplastics (MNPLs) in subcellular/molecular environmental pollution toxicity on human and animals

Microplastics and Nanoplastics (MNPLs) pollution has been recognized as the important environmental pollution caused by human activities in addition to global warming, ozone layer depletion and ocean acidification. Most of the current studies have focused on the toxic effects caused by plastics and have not actively investigated the mechanisms causing cell death, especially at the subcellular level. The main content of this paper focuses on two aspects, one is a review of the current status of MNPLs contamination and recent advances in toxicological studies, which highlights the possible concentration levels of MNPLs in the environment and the internal exposure of humans. It is also proposed to pay attention to the compound toxicity of MNPLs as carriers of other environmental pollutants and pathogenic factors. Secondly, subcellular toxicity is discussed and the modes of entry and intracellular distribution of smaller-size MNPLs are analyzed, with particular emphasis on the importance of organelle damage to elucidate the mechanism of toxicity. Importantly, MNPLs are a new type of environmental pollutant and researchers need to focus not only on their toxicity, but also work with governments to develop measures to reduce plastic emissions, optimize degradation and control plastic aggression against organisms, especially humans, from multiple perspectives.

Microplastics in water, sediments, and fish at Alpine River, originating from the Hindu Kush Mountain, Pakistan: implications for conservation

Microplastics (MP) pollution is an emerging threat to life and the environment. These particles are not restricted to human-inhabited lands but also found in different mountains and glaciers where the human population is relatively low. These MPs make their way to the river ecosystem from glaciers, rains, and municipal and industrial effluents. The current study was designed to highlight MPs' pollution in water, sediments, and fishes of the Swat River: originating from the Hindu Kush Mountain Range. These samples were collected from eight different sites across the river. An average concentration of MPs detected in water samples (305.79 ± 289.66 MPs/m³), fish (12.54 ± 8.02 MPs/individual), and sediments (588.29 ± 253.95 MPs/kg). The highest concentration was observed among water samples at Mingora city and the lowest at the confluence point of the rivers near Charsadda being 753.71 ± 330.08 MPs/m³ and 57.64 ± 31.98 MPs/m³, respectively. MP concentrations in the sediment samples were also the highest at Mingora city (834.0 ± 367.21 MPs/kg), and lowest at Chakdara (215.0 ± 20.0 MPs/kg). Among the fish samples, Schizothorax plagiostomus contained the highest while Wallago attu contained the lowest MP concentrations corresponding to 17.08 ± 8.27 MPs/individual and 5.0 ± 2.36 MPs/individual, respectively. Fibers were the most prevalent MPs in all the matrices representing 80%, 92%, and 85% of the total MP count in water, sediments, and fish samples. These findings highlighted that freshwater ecosystem are not free from MPs and are as much vulnerable to anthropogenic activities as marine ecosystem. Therefore, need attention not less than marine ecosystem awareness, education, ecotourism, sustainable reduction in plastic use, and strict rules and regulations could be helpful to prevent the anthropogenic menace.

Heavy metal-mediated adsorption of antibiotic tetracycline and ciprofloxacin on two microplastics: Insights into the role of complexation

Microplastics (MPs) have recently become an emerging environmental concern. Nevertheless, limited information is known about the adsorption of MPs for organic contaminants under combined heavy metals pollution, with an emphasis on the role of complexation. Thus, this study aims to comprehensively compare and investigate the adsorption performance of antibiotic tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) on two polar MPs (polyamide (PA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) affected by Cu(II) and Cd(II) with contrasting complexation abilities. Batch adsorption experiments were used in combination with speciation calculation, zeta potential determination, FTIR spectroscopy characterization and investigation of the affinity of MPs for heavy metals. Results showed that the sorption kinetics and isotherms of TC and CIP on PA and PVC could be well fitted to pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively, both in the absence and presence of Cu and Cd, suggesting that multiple interactions and monolayer adsorption played an important role in the adsorption process. The presence of Cu substantially improved TC and CIP adsorption and obviously changed the pH dependence of their adsorption onto both MPs, which may result from the Cu-induced strong complexation with TC and CIP. The presence of Cd slightly enhanced TC adsorption on both MPs while reduced CIP adsorption especially on PVC, which may be ascribed to the Cd-induced cationic bridging effects in TC adsorption and the competitive adsorption of Cd in CIP adsorption. Therefore, the heavy metal-mediated complexation effects may play a dominant role in antibiotic adsorption by MPs only in the presence of heavy metals with strong complexation ability while the adsorption performance in the presence of heavy metals with negligible complexation capacity may be influenced by effects other than complexation. This study helps further understand the heavy metal-mediated adsorption behavior of organic contaminants on polar MPs and the role of complexation reactions therein.

Microplastics in the Surface Water and Gastrointestinal Tract of Salmo trutta from the Mahodand Lake, Kalam Swat in Pakistan

Microplastic pollution is becoming an increasingly severe environmental problem. As compared to the marine ecosystem, freshwater ecosystems at high-altitude, remote regions are less studied and lag far behind. Thus, the present study aims to highlight this issue and fill the gap in this regard. The presence of microplastics (MPs) in the surface water and the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of brown trout (Salmo trutta) from Lake Mahodand, Kalam Swat, Pakistan, at a high altitude of 2865 m above sea level was investigated. For microplastic extraction, samples were digested with H2O2, NaCl solution was added for density separation, and then samples were filtered with a cellulose nitrate filter (pore size 0.45 µ). After this, visual observation and polymer detection with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, microplastics were characterized by their shapes, sizes, colors, and polymer types. In the surface water sample, MP particles were found in the range of 0−5 MPs/L, where the mean concentration of MPs was 2.3 ± 1.52 MPs/L and 1.7 ± 1.05 MPs/gastrointestinal tract (GIT) isolated from the GIT of brown trout. Particles of relatively larger size (500−300 µm) were more abundant than other ranges of particles (300−150 and 150−50 µm) in the surface water and fish samples. The fiber was the most abundant shape of MP particles, followed by sheets and fragments in surface water and fish samples (fibers > sheets > fragments). Four types of polymer viz. low-density polyethylene (LDPE) (44.4%), polypropylene homopolymer (PPH) (19.4%), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (30.5%), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) (5.5%) were detected by FTIR spectroscopy. The findings of the present study showed that MPs reached into higher altitudes in remote areas due to tourism activities.

Chromium in plant-soil nexus: Speciation, uptake, transport and sustainable remediation techniques

Heavy metal (HM) pollution has become a serious global problem due to the non-biodegradable nature of the HMs and their persistence in the environment. Agricultural soil is a non-renewable resource that requires careful management so that it can fulfill the increasing demand for agricultural food production. However, different anthropogenic activities have resulted in a large-scale accumulation of HMs in soil which is detrimental to soil and plant health. Due to their ubiquity, increased bioavailability, toxicity, and non-biodegradable nature, HM contamination has formed a roadblock in the way of achieving food security, safety, and sustainability in the future. Chromium (Cr), specifically Cr(VI) is a highly bioavailable HM with no proven role in the physiology of plants. Chromium has been found to be highly toxic to plants, with its toxicity also influenced by chemical speciation, which is in turn controlled by different factors, such as soil pH, redox potential, organic matter, and microbial population. In this review, the different factors that influence Cr speciation were analyzed and the relationship between biogeochemical transformations of Cr and its bioavailability which may be beneficial for devising different Cr remediation strategies has been discussed. Also, the uptake and transport mechanism of Cr in plants, with particular reference to sulfate and phosphate transporters has been presented. The biological solutions for the remediation of Cr contaminated sites which offer safe and viable alternatives to old-style physical and chemical remediation strategies have been discussed in detail. This review provides theoretical guidance in developing suitable approaches for the better management of these remediation strategies.

How do controlled-release fertilizer coated microplastics dynamically affect Cd availability by regulating Fe species and DOC content in soil?

Microplastics (MPs) affect the accumulation of heavy metals by regulating the soil environment. However, studies on the dynamic effects of microplastics on the available states of heavy metals in soil are lacking. In particular, how controlled-release fertilizer coated microplastics can synergistically change the avsilable states of heavy metals in soil by affecting soil physical and chemical properties and microbial community structure is still lacking. The dynamic effect of polyurethane (PU) MPs on the effective state of soil cadmium (Cd; DGTCd), at different particle sizes and concentrations, was studied in situ by diffusive gradient in thin-films (DGT) for the first time. The bioavailability, soil chemical properties, and microbial effects of PU MPs on Cd depend on PU particle size and concentration; high-concentration (1 %) PU MPs cause a significant increase in DGT-Cd concentration. The addition of PU MPs decreased soil pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), while increasing the absolute zeta value, Fe(II) and Mn(II), in a manner dependent on particle size, concentration, and culture time. Correlation analysis combined with path analysis showed that PU MPs affected the effective state of Cd by changing soil properties, among which Fe(II) content and DOC were important factors controlling the activation of Cd. Meanwhile, changes in soil properties and heavy metal availability correlated significantly with microbial community composition, suggesting that PU MPs may indirectly impact heavy metal activity by affecting microorganisms and functional genes associated with C and Fe cycling. Therefore, when the concentration of PU MPs is higher than 1 %, we should strengthen ecological risk prevention and control of the compound pollution of controlled-release fertilizer coated microplastics and heavy metals in farmland soil.

Response of bacterial diversity and community structure to metals in mangrove sediments from South China

Human activities have given rise to metal contamination in the constituents of mangrove ecosystems, posing a critical threat to sediment microorganisms; hence, it is of great importance to comprehend the effects of metals on the microbial communities in mangrove sediments. This study was the first to explore the response of the bacterial diversity and community structure to nine metals (As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and organic matter fractions (including total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total sulfur (TS)) in mangrove wetlands from Zhanjiang, China, using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology and Spearman correlation analysis. The results showed that these nine metals were scattered differently in different mangrove sediments, and the metals and organic matter fractions jointly affected the bacterial communities in the sediments. Several metals displayed significant positive correlations with the abundances of the phylum Bacteroidetes and the genera Actibacter and Sphingobacterium but significant negative correlations with the abundances of two genera Holophaga and Caldithrix. Furthermore, the abundances of the phylum Actinobacteria and many bacterial genera showed significant positive or negative responses to the levels of the three organic matter fractions. Interestingly, the levels of a number of bacterial genera that exhibited increased abundance with high levels of metals and TS might be reduced with high TOC and TN, and vice versa: the levels of genera that exhibited decreased abundance with high levels of metals and TS might be increased with high TOC and TN. Overall, many bacterial groups showed different response patterns to each metal or organic matter fraction, and these metals together with organic matter fractions influenced the bacterial diversity and community structure in mangrove sediments.

Microplastics profile in constructed wetlands: Distribution, retention and implications

Wastewater and stormwater are both considered as critical pathways contributing microplastics (MPs) to the aquatic environment. However, there is little information in the literature about the potential influence of constructed wetlands (CWs), a commonly used wastewater and stormwater treatment system. This study was conducted to investigate the abundance and distribution of MPs in water and sediment at five CWs with different influent sources, namely stormwater and wastewater. The MP abundance in the water samples ranged between 0.4 ± 0.3 and 3.8 ± 2.3 MP/L at the inlet and from 0.1 ± 0.0 to 1.3 ± 1.0 MP/L at the outlet. In the sediment, abundance of MPs was generally higher at the inlet, ranging from 736 ± 335 to 3480 ± 4330 MP/kg dry sediment and decreased to between 19.0 ± 16.4 and 1060 ± 326 MP/kg dry sediment at the outlet. Although no significant differences were observed in sediment cores at different depth across the five CWs, more MPs were recorded in silt compared to sandy sediment which indicated sediment grain size could be an environmental factor contributing to the distribution of MPs. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres were the dominant polymer type found in the water samples while polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) fragments were predominantly recorded in the sediment. While the size of MPs in water varied across the studied CWs, between 51% and 64% of MPs in the sediment were smaller than 300 μm, which raises concerns about the bioavailability of MPs to a wider range of wetland biota and their potential ecotoxicological effects. This study shows that CWs can not only retain MPs in the treated water, but also become sinks accumulating MPs over time.

Remediation technology towards zero plastic pollution: Recent advance and perspectives

The rapid growth of plastic wastes exceeds efforts to eliminate plastic pollution owing to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 and then aggravates inherent environmental threats to the ecosystem. The paper provided a short introduction relating to the hazards of plastic wastes on environment and a detailed statement about plastic toxicity on human. The article stated on plastic how to enter the body and cause harm for us step by step. Given the toxicity and harm of plastic wastes on human, the degradation of plastic wastes via the physical, chemical and biotic methodologies is looked back. The advanced physical techniques are introduced briefly at firstly. Additionally, evaluate on chemical method for plastic decomposition and review on biotic degradation of plastic. The reactive oxygen species and the enzymes play a crucial role in chemical and biotic degradation processes, respectively. The reactive oxygen species are derived from the activated state of oxides, and the enzymes that aid the microorganism to ingest plastic through its metabolic mechanism are secreted by the microorganism. Subsequently, the potential possibility of upcycling plastic is analyzed from two aspects of the technology and application. The innovative technology utilizes sunlight as driver-power of plastic upcycling. And the carbon capture, utilization and sequestration and the growth substrate provided the novel guided directions for plastic recycle. Lastly, the three suggestions on plastic waste management are expected to establish an economy and efficient plastic sorting system, and two engineering solutions on plastic recycle are to make a contribution for sustainable upcycling of plastic.

Effects of land use and landscape on the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in soil, China

Microplastic pollution in the soil environment has gathered widespread attention. However, little is known about the effects of land use and landscape patterns on the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in the soil. Herein, the microplastic pollution in different land uses (facility farmland, traditional farmland, orchard, grassland, and woodland) in Yuanmou County, Yunnan Province was investigated. The results showed that the abundance of microplastic ranged from 50.000 to 3450.0 items·kg^-1, with an average abundance of 595.00 ± 740.00 items·kg^-1 and a median of 375.00 items·kg^-1. Microplastics were found to primarily be green-coloured (28.4 %), fragment (72.7 %) in shape, <1 mm (75.7 %) in size, and composed of polypropylene (51.4 %). There were significant differences in the abundance and characteristics of the microplastics between different land use types. Microplastic abundance in facility farmlands, traditional farmlands, and orchard lands was significantly higher than that of grasslands and woodlands (p < 0.05). The main shape of the microplastics in facility farmlands, traditional farmlands, and orchards was fragments and it was fibers in grasslands and woodlands. The median particle size of microplastics in facility farmlands (539.50 μm) and traditional farmlands (574.00 μm), was smaller than those in the orchard (737.60 μm), grasslands (697.60 μm), and woodlands (1239.4 μm). Discrepancies among different land uses may be due to various reasons, such as different pollution sources and the weathering degree of microplastics. The results of the redundancy analysis showed that the microplastic abundance was negatively correlated with the largest patch index. It also showed that microplastic pollution was closely related to human activities. This study provides an important basis for further research on microplastic ecosystem risks that are associated with land use and provides a data basis for formulating effective prevention and control strategies and measures to mitigate soil microplastic pollution.

Exploration of Single and Co-Toxic Effects of Polypropylene Micro-Plastics and Cadmium on Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

The widespread application of micro-plastics (MP) and their release in the open environment has become a matter of worldwide concern. When interacting with contaminants such as heavy metals in the soil ecosystem, MPs can result in detrimental effects on the soil environment and plant growth and development. However, information based on the interaction between MPs and heavy metals and their effects on terrestrial plants is still limited. Keeping this in mind, the present study was conducted to explore the single and combined toxicity of polypropylene (PP) MPs (13 and 6.5 μm) and cadmium (Cd) on germination indices; root and stem growth; fresh and dry weight; and anti-oxidative enzyme activities of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings. Our results indicated that a single application of PP MP and Cd on rice seedlings inhibited most of the germination indicators, while their co-occurrence (PP + Cd) showed a reduction in the overall toxicity to some extent. A single application of both the contaminants significantly inhibited root length, stem length, fresh weight and the activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes in rice seedling, while no significant effect on dry weight was observed. The combined toxicity of both PP and Cd revealed that 13 μm PP + Cd had an antagonistic effect on the growth of rice seedlings, while 6.5 μm PP + Cd showed a synergistic effect. The present study revealed that smaller PP MP particles (6.5 µm) prominently affected plant growth more as compared to larger particles (13 µm). Our work reported the combined effect of PP MP and Cd on the germination and growth of rice for the first time. This study can provide the basis for future research on the combined effects of different types and sizes of MPs and heavy metals on the terrestrial ecosystem.

Wide occurrence of seven phthalate plasticizers and two typical microplastics in pig feed

Plastics are widely used as packaging and engineering materials in feed processing, which leads to the potential contamination of plasticizers and microplastics (MPs) in animal feeds. In this study, the concentrations of two typical MPs, i.e., polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polycarbonate (PC), and seven phthalates (PAEs) as well as their corresponding monoester metabolites (mPAEs) in 45 pig feed samples in China were analyzed by mass spectrometers. Among PAEs, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were detected in all samples, and DEHP showed the highest concentrations of 8.26-2464 μg/kg, which accounted for 65.6% of the total detected PAEs. PET MPs (<MDL-302 μg/kg) were detected in 97.8% of samples. Meanwhile, mPAEs were also detected in feed samples with high detection rates but of much lower concentrations. A significantly positive correlation was observed between DEHP and PET MPs. This indicates that the sources of DEHP and MPs in feeds are homologous, mainly from processing and packaging. Besides, the significantly positive correlations between DBP/DEHP and mBP/mEHP indicated the degradation of PAEs to mPAEs during feed production and transportation. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of PAEs and PET MPs were 2.40-70.3 and 0.800-7.79 μg/kg-bw-day, respectively. The results of this study provided new insight into the first evidence of the co-occurrence and risk of MPs, PAE, and mPAEs in pig feed.

Effects of microplastics on growth and metabolism of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Present work studied the impact of different doses of polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics (MPs) on rice plants (Oryza sativa L.). Seven different treatments of PS and PVC MPs viz. D₀ (control), D₁-D₃ (0, 1.5, and 3.0 mg L^-1 PS-MP) and D₄-D₆ (0, 1.5, and 3.0 mg L^-1 PVC-MP) were given. In the experiment, sequential variations in growth, ionic homeostasis, and antioxidant metabolism in rice were monitored. Results show that compared to control, maximum repression in shoot and root and fresh and dry weight were recorded in D_6. We demonstrate that D₃ and D₆ reduced the photosynthetic rate up to 31.49 and 43.81% compared to D₀ while the transpiration rate was enhanced only under controlled conditions. Water use efficiency and internal CO₂ concentration increased due to incremented doses of MPs. Decline in photosynthetic attributes directly corresponded with reduction in SPAD value (34.96%) at D₆. Besides, ionic homeostasis was perturbed and concentration of Ca, N, P, and K in root and shoot was imbalanced due to all levels of MPs and D₃ and D₆ were found most hazardous for these attributes. The resultant oxidative stress caused increment in MDA (49.26 and 138.44%) and H₂O₂, (66.72 and 125.18%) at D₃ and D₆, respectively. The maximum increase in SOD (109.08 and 146.08%), POD (232.59 and 289.23%), and CAT (182.65 and 242.89%) was estimated under D₃ and D₆, respectively as compared to control. Therefore, we concluded that PVC-MPs accumulation is potentially more devastating for rice growth and metabolism than PS-MPs. We recommend further research experimentats not only for translocation but also for tissue-specific retention of different sized MPs in crop plants to completely understand their influence on food safety.

Bioaccessibility of microplastic-associated heavy metals using an in vitro digestion model and its implications for human health risk assessment

Microplastics can act as carriers of heavy metals and may enter humans through ingestion and threaten human health. However, the bioaccessibility of heavy metals associated with microplastics and its implications for human health risk assessments are poorly understood. Therefore, in this study, four typical heavy metals (As(V), Cr(VI), Cd(II), and Pb(II)) and one typical microplastic (polyvinyl chloride, PVC) were chosen to estimate the human health risk of microplastic-associated heavy metals by incorporating bioaccessibility. Significant adsorption of heavy metals was observed with the following order for adsorption capacity: Pb(II) > Cr(VI) > Cd(II) > As(V); the efficiencies for desorption of these four heavy metals from PVC microplastics were all below 10%. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results indicated that the functional groups on the surface of the virgin PVC microplastics did not play an important role in the capture process. Heavy metals in both gastric and small intestinal phases were prone to release from PVC microplastics when bioaccessibility was evaluated with the in vitro SBRC (Soluble Bioavailability Research Consortium) digestion model. In addition, Pb(II) bioaccessibility in the gastric phase was significantly higher than those in the other phases, while As(V), Cr(VI), and Cd(II) bioaccessibilities showed the opposite trend. After incorporating bioaccessibility adjustments, the noncarcinogenic hazards and carcinogenic risks determined were lower than those based on total metal contents. The individual hazard quotients (HQ) and carcinogenic risks (CR) for ingestion of these four heavy metals from PVC microplastics were all lower than the threshold values for adults and children. In summary, this study will provide a new view of the human health risks of heavy metals associated with microplastics.

Removal of nanoplastics in water treatment processes: A review

Nanoplastics are drawing a significant attention as a result of their propensity to spread across the environment and pose a threat to all organisms. The presence of nanoplastics in water is given attention nowadays as the transit of nanoplastics occurs through the aquatic ecosphere besides terrestrial mobility. The principal removal procedures for macro-and micro-plastic particles are effective, but nanoparticles escape from the treatment, increasing in the water and significantly influencing the society. This critical review is aimed to bestow the removal technologies of nanoplastics from aquatic ecosystems, with a focus on the treatment of freshwater, drinking water, and wastewater, as well as the importance of transit and its impact on health concerns. Still, there exists a gap in providing a collective knowledge on the methods available for nanoplastics removal. Hence, this review offered various nanoplastic removal technologies (microorganism-based degradation, membrane separation with a reactor, and photocatalysis) that could be the practical/effective measures along with the traditional procedures (filtration, coagulation, centrifugation, flocculation, and gravity settling). From the analyses of different treatment systems, the effectiveness of nanoplastics removal depends on various factors, source, size, and type of nanoplastics apart from the treatment method adopted. Combined removal methods, filtration with coagulation offer great scope for the removal of nanoplastics from drinking water with >99 % efficiency. The collected data could serve as base-line information for future research and development in water nanoplastics cleanup.

Adsorption of tetracycline and Cd(II) on polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics with ultraviolet and hydrogen peroxide aging treatment

Microplastics (MPs) could serve as vectors of antibiotics and heavy metals through sorption and desorption. However, the combined adsorption process of antibiotics and heavy metals on aged MPs has rarely been studied. In this study, combined adsorption/desorption of tetracycline (TC) and Cd(II) on/from polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MPs, as well as ultraviolet (UV) and H₂O₂ aged MPs, was investigated. The specific surface areas of the MPs increased after UV and H₂O₂ aging. Adsorption experiments showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model fitted adsorption of TC and Cd(II) on all of the MPs. The adsorption capacities of TC and Cd(II) were higher on aged MPs than on the pristine MPs, especially on H₂O₂ treated MPs. TC adsorption on the MPs was hardly affected by Cd(II), and Cd(II) adsorption was not significantly affected by TC when the solution pH value was below 8.0. Cd(II) slightly enhanced TC adsorption on the MPs at pH 8.0, especially on the aged MPs. The TC adsorption capacities increased with increasing pH, reaching a maximum at pH 5.0 or 6.0, and they then decreased, while the largest level of Cd(II) adsorption was at approximately pH 6.0. Adsorption of TC and Cd(II) on the pristine and aged MPs was thermodynamically favorable and spontaneous. The trend of the desorption rates of TC and Cd(II) from the MPs in different background solutions was ultrapure water < surface water < simulated gastric fluid. The desorption rates of TC and Cd(II) from the aged MPs were lower than those from the pristine MPs. The results revealed the mechanism of the TC and Cd(II) combined adsorption process on aged MPs, which will provide insight for understanding the aging process and its potential effects on sorption and desorption of antibiotics and heavy metals in the real environment.
