'Green' synthesis of metals and their oxide nanoparticles: applications for environmental remediation

Polychaeta-mediated synthesis of gold nanoparticles: A potential antibacterial agent against Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND)-causing bacteria, Vibrio parahaemolyticus

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have emerged as a promising application in aquaculture. Their nano-sized dimensions, comparable to pathogens offer potential solutions for combating antibiotic resistance. In this study, AuNPs were synthesized by using polychaetes, Marphysa moribidii as the bio-reducing agent. Modifications were made to reduce agglomeration in green-synthesized AuNPs through ultrasonication. The antibacterial activities of AuNPs against V. parahaemolyticus were evaluated. The physicochemical characteristics of the green synthesized AuNPs were comprehensively investigated. The successful formation of AuNPs was confirmed by the appearance of a red ruby colour and the presence of surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption peaks at 530 nm as observed from UV-vis spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed spherical-shaped AuNPs with some agglomerations. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed particle size of AuNPs ranging from 10 nm to 60 nm, meanwhile dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis indicated an average particle size of 24.36 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the high crystallinity of AuNPs, and no AuNPs were detected in the polychaetes extracts prior to synthesis. A brief ultrasonication significantly reduced the tendencies for AuNPs to coalesce. The green-synthesized AuNPs demonstrated a remarkable antibacterial efficacy against V. parahaemolyticus. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests revealed that a concentration of 0.3 g/ml of AuNPs effectively inhibited V. parahaemolyticus. These findings highlighted the potential of green-synthesized AuNPs as antibacterial agents for the prevention and management of AHPND in aquaculture.

Magnetic biopolymers' nanocomposites from chitosan, lignin and phycosynthesized iron nanoparticles to remediate water from polluting oil

Targeting the remediation of oil pollution in water, the construction of super magnetic adsorbent nanocomposites (NCs) was achieved using the nanoparticles of chitosan (Cht), lignin (Lg) and phycosynthesized iron nanoparticles (Fe MNPs) using Gelidium amansii extract. The syntheses and conjugations of nanomaterials were authenticated via infrared spectral analysis and the structural physiognomies of them were appraised via electron microscopy and zeta analysis. The Lg NPs, Cht NPs, Fe MNPs and their composites (Lg/Cht MNCs) had mean particles' sizes of 42.3, 76.4, 14.2 and 108.3 nm, and were charged with - 32.7, + 41.2, + 28.4 and +37.5 mV, respectively. The magnetometer revealed the high magnetic properties of both Fe MNPs and Lg/Cht MNCs; the maximum swelling of Lg/Cht NPs (46.3 %), and Lg/Cht MNPs (33.8 %) was detected after 175 min. The diesel oil adsorption experiments with Lg/Cht MNPs, using batch adsorption practices, revealed the powerful potentiality of magnetic NCs to remove oil pollution in water; the maximum adsorption capacity (qt) was achieved with the conditions of pH = 7.5, adsorption period = 90 min and adsorbent dose = 200 mg/L. The magnetic Lg/Cht MNCs exhibited excellent recovery/reusability attributes for five adsorption cycles; the qt differences were negligible after the entire oil-adsorption cycles, with oil removal of >90 %. The innovative fabricated Lg/Cht MNCs could provide an effectual, sustainable and eco-friendly approach for the removal of pollutant oil in water resources.

ZnO nanostructured matrix as nexus catalysts for the removal of emerging pollutants

Water pollution stands as a pressing global environmental concern, elevating the significance of innovative, dependable, and sustainable solutions. This study represents an extensive review of the use of photocatalytic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for the removal of emerging pollutants from water and wastewater. The study examines ZnO NPs' different preparation methods, including physical, chemical, and green synthesis, and emphasizes on advantages, disadvantages, preparation factors, and investigation methods for the structural and morphological properties. ZnO NPs demonstrate remarkable properties as photocatalysts; however, their small dimensions pose an issue, leading to potential post-use environmental losses. A strategy to overcome this challenge is scaling up ZnO NP matrices for enhanced stability and efficiency. The paper introduces novel ZnO NP composites, by incorporating supports like carbon and clay that serve as photocatalysts in the removal of emerging pollutants from water and wastewater. In essence, this research underscores the urgency of finding innovative, efficient, and eco-friendly solutions for the removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater and highlights the high removal efficiencies obtained when using ZnO NPs obtained from green synthesis as a photocatalyst. Future research should be developed on the cost-benefit analysis regarding the preparation methods, treatment processes, and value-added product regeneration efficiency.

Green synthesis, characterization, antibacterial, and antifungal activity of copper oxide nanoparticles derived from Morinda citrifolia leaf extract

The green methodologies of nanoparticles with plant extracts have received an increase of interest. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have been utilized in a many of applications in the last few decades. The current study presents the synthesis of CuO NPs with aqueous extract of Morinda citrifolia as a stabilizing agent. The leaf extract of Morinda citrifolia was mixed with a solution of copper sulphate (CuSO4·5H2O) and sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. UV-visible spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDAX analysis were performed to study the synthesized CuO NPs. Particle size distribution of the synthesized CuO NPs have been measured with dynamic light scattering. The CuO NPs synthesized were highly stable, sphere-like, and have size of particles from 20 to 50 nm. Furthermore, as-formed CuO NPs shown strong antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus), and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli). CuO NPs revealed a similar trend was analysed for antifungal activity. The zone of inhibition for the fungi evaluated for Aspergillus flavus (13.0 ± 1.1), Aspergillus niger (14.3 ± 0.7), and Penicillium frequentans (16.8 ± 1.4). According to the results of this investigation, green synthesized CuO NPs with Morinda citrifolia leaf extract may be used in biomedicine as a replacement agent for biological applications.

Green synthesis and characterization of silver and copper nanoparticles and their use as an effective adsorbent for chromium removal and recovery from wastewater

Chromium (Cr) is one of the hazardous heavy metals that is naturally carcinogenic and causes various health problems. Metallic nanoparticles such as silver and copper nanoparticles (Ag NPs and Cu NPs) have gained great attention because of their unique chemical, physical, and biological attributes, serving diverse and significant role in various useful and sustainable applications. In the present study, both of these NPs were synthesized by green method in which Azadirachta indica plant extract was used. These nanoparticles were characterized by using advanced instrumental techniques such as Fourier transmission infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope attached with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and elemental mapping. These environmentally friendly nanoparticles were utilized for the batch removal of Cr from the wastewater. For analysis of adsorption behaviour, a range of kinetic isotherm models (Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin, and Langmuir) and kinetic models (pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order) were used for the Cu-NPs and Ag-NPs. Cu NPs exhibited the highest Cr removal efficiency (96%) within a contact time of 10-15 min, closely followed by Ag NPs which achieved a removal efficiency of 94% under the similar conditions. These optimal outcomes were observed at a sorbent dose of 0.5 g/L for Ag NPs and 0.7 g/L for Cu NPs. After effectively capturing Cr using these nanoparticles, the sorbates were examined through SEM-EDX analysis to observe how much Cr metal was attached to the nanoparticles, potentially for future use. The analysis found that Ag-NPs captured 18% of Cr, while Cu-NPs captured 12% from the aqueous solution. More precise experimental conditions are needed for higher Cr removal from wastewater and determination of the best conditions for industrial-level Cr reuse. Although nanomaterial exhibit high efficiency and selectivity for Cr removal and recovery from wastewater, more research is necessary to optimize their synthesis and performance for industrial-scale applications and develop efficient methods for Cr removal and recovery.

Bacterial MgSe complex nanoparticle synthesis and electrical characterization of fabricated Ag/MgSe/p-Si hetero-structure under dark and illumination

The Pseudomonas aeruginosa OG1 strain was used in the bacterial synthesis of MgSe compound nanoparticles. The obtained samples were subsequently shaped into nanocrystalline MgSe films, and their optical, structural, morphological, and electrical properties were assessed on glass and p-Si substrates. Structural and morphological characterizations showed that the fabricated thin film samples have a polycrystalline structure with high quality and uniform grain sizes. The MgSe films produced on glass substrates exhibit a direct spectral band gap of 2.53 eV, according to optical measurements. The Ag/MgSe/p-Si layered diode structure was fabricated using the produced MgSe nanoparticles and then characterized by electrical properties. Electrical measurements were carried out under these two conditions to assess the effects of dark and illumination conditions on the band dynamics of the heterostructure devices. Under illumination, the barrier height decreased while the interface density states distribution increased. These measurements showed that using bacterial-assisted grown MgSe nanocrystalline films, the developed Ag/MgSe/p-Si device structure exhibited a remarkable photoresponse and stable rectifying property. Green synthesis methods for the production of these nanocrystalline materials have the potential to offer low-cost alternatives for photosensitive applications.

Green Synthesis of Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: A Review of the Principles and Biomedical Applications

In recent years, interest in nanotechnology has increased exponentially due to enhanced progress and technological innovation. In tissue engineering, the development of metallic nanoparticles has been amplified, especially due to their antibacterial properties. Another important characteristic of metal NPs is that they enable high control over the features of the developed scaffolds (optimizing their mechanical strength and offering the controlled release of bioactive agents). Currently, the main concern related to the method of synthesis of metal oxide NPs is the environmental impact. The physical and chemical synthesis uses toxic agents that could generate hazards or exert carcinogenicity/environmental toxicity. Therefore, a greener, cleaner, and more reliable approach is needed. Green synthetic has come as a solution to counter the aforementioned limitations. Nowadays, green synthesis is preferred because it leads to the prevention/minimization of waste, the reduction of derivatives/pollution, and the use of non-toxic (safer) solvents. This method not only uses biomass sources as reducing agents for metal salts. The biomolecules also cover the synthesized NPs or act as in situ capping and reducing agents. Further, their involvement in the formation process reduces toxicity, prevents nanoparticle agglomeration, and improves the antimicrobial activity of the nanomaterial, leading to a possible synergistic effect. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the green synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, from the synthesis routes, selected solvents, and parameters to their latest application in the biomedical field.

Current trends in bioremediation and bio-integrated treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons

Petroleum hydrocarbons and their derivatives constitute the leading group of environmental pollutants worldwide. In the present global scenario, petroleum and natural gas production, exploration, petroleum refining, and other anthropogenic activities produce huge amounts of hazardous petroleum wastes that accumulate in the terrestrial and marine environment. Due to their carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and mutagenic characteristics, petroleum pollutants pose severe risks to human health and exert ecotoxicological effects on the ecosystems. To mitigate petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) contamination, implementing "green technologies" for effective cleanup and restoration of an affected environment is considered as a pragmatic approach. This review provides a comprehensive outline of newly emerging bioremediation technologies, for instance; nanobioremediation, electrokinetic bioremediation, vermiremediation, multifunctional and sustainably implemented on-site applied biotechnologies such as; natural attenuation, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, bioventing, phytoremediation and multi-process hybrid technologies. Additionally, the scope of the effectiveness and limitations of individual technologies in treating the petroleum hydrocarbon polluted sites are also evaluated.

The Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Avena fatua Extract: Antifungal Activity against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici

Using plant extracts as eco-friendly reducing and stabilizing agents for the synthesis of nanoparticles has gained significant attention in recent years. The current study explores the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the Avena fatua extract and evaluates their antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (Fol), a fungal plant pathogen. A green and sustainable approach was adopted to synthesize silver nanoparticles before these nanoparticles were employed for anti-fungal activity. The primary indication that AgNPs had formed was performed using UV-vis spectroscopy, where a strong peak at 425 nm indicated the effective formation of these nanoparticles. The indication of important functional groups acting as reducing and stabilizing agents was conducted using the FTIR study. Additionally, morphological studies were executed via SEM and AFM, which assisted with more effectively analyzing AgNPs. Crystalline behavior and size were estimated using powder XRD, and it was found that AgNPs were highly crystalline, and their size ranged from 5 to 25 nm. Synthesized AgNPs exhibited significant antifungal activity against Fol at a concentration of 40 ppm. Furthermore, the inhibitory index confirmed a positive correlation between increasing AgNPs concentration and exposure duration. This study suggests that the combined phytochemical mycotoxic effect of the plant extract and the smaller size of synthesized AgNPs were responsible for the highest penetrating power to inhibit Fol growth. Moreover, this study highlights the potential of using plant extracts as reducing and capping agents for the green synthesis of AgNPs with antifungal properties. The study concludes that A. fatua extract can synthesize antifungal AgNPs as a sustainable approach with robust antifungal efficacy against Fol, underscoring their promising potential for integration into plant protection strategies.

Lignosulfonate-Assisted In Situ Deposition of Palladium Nanoparticles on Carbon Nanotubes for the Electrocatalytic Sensing of Hydrazine

This paper presents a novel modified electrode for an amperometric hydrazine sensor based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified with lignosulfonate (LS) and decorated with palladium nanoparticles (NPds). The MWCNT/LS/NPd hybrid was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical properties of the electrode material were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results showed that GC/MWCNT/LS/NPd possesses potent electrocatalytic properties towards the electro-oxidation of hydrazine. The electrode demonstrated exceptional electrocatalytic activity coupled with a considerable sensitivity of 0.166 μA μM-1 cm-2. The response was linear from 3.0 to 100 µM L-1 and 100 to 10,000 µM L-1, and the LOD was quantified to 0.80 µM L-1. The efficacy of the modified electrode as an electrochemical sensor was corroborated in a study of hydrazine determination in water samples.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with and without Cobalt Functionalization Provoke Changes in the Transcription Profile via Epigenetic Modulation of Enhancer Activity

Despite the progress in the field of nanotoxicology, much about the cellular mechanisms that mediate the adverse effects of nanoparticles (NPs) and, in particular, the possible role of epigenetics in nanotoxicity, remains to be clarified. Therefore, we studied the changes occurring in the genome-wide distribution of H3K27ac, H3K4me1, H3K9me2, and H3K27me3 histone modifications and compared them with the transcriptome after exposing NIH3T3 cells to iron-based magnetic NPs (i.e., Fe2O3 and Fe2O3@Co NPs). We found that the transcription response is mainly due to changes in the genomic distribution of H3K27ac that can modulate the activity of enhancers. We propose that alteration of the epigenetic landscape is a key mechanism in defining the gene expression program changes resulting in nanotoxicity. With this approach, it is possible to construct a data set of genomic regions that could be useful for defining toxicity in a manner that is more comprehensive than what is possible with the present toxicology assays.

Biofabrication of Acer palmatum-Mediated Multifunctional CuO Nanoparticles for Dye Removal, Antibacterial-Antifungal Activity, and Molecular Docking

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) are used in many fields from electronics to medicine due to their multifunctionality, and therefore, their production with environmentally friendly methods is a current issue. In this study, biofabricated CuONPs were obtained by using the leaf extract of Acer palmatum plant originating from the Far East to enlighten the characteristics of the novel nanoparticles differentiating from those existing in the literature. Multifunctional nature of the CuONPs was evaluated by the antibacterial, antifungal, and decolorative applications and also by performing molecular docking analysis. The fabricated CuONPs were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The absorbance seen at 270 nm in the SPR band obtained by UV-vis spectroscopy proved the presence of CuONPs, while the 602, 560, and 540 cm-1 vibrations obtained in the FT-IR spectroscopy indicated the same result. SEM images proved that the nanoparticles were in spherical form with sizes ranging from 140 to 225 nm. The result of DLS analysis showed that the average particle size was 229 nm in diameter, and CuONPs had monodisperse systems (polydispersity index, 0.184). The dye removal potency of CuONPs was also investigated by using remazol brilliant blue R (RBBR) and napthol blue black (NBB). Decolorizations (74 and 86%) of RBBR and NBB were obtained in 90 min at 50 °C, respectively. The strong antibacterial properties of the synthesized CuONPs were observed on both Gram (-) and Gram (+) bacterial strains by disk diffusion and optical analyses, and their antifungal activity was close to that of Amphotericin B, which was applied as a positive control. Molecular docking analysis was performed with Escherichia coli dihydrofolate reductase and Staphylococcus aureus DNA Gyrase B to analyze the antibacterial mechanisms of CuONP and observed that they exhibit good interactions with their targets with binding energies of -12.562 and -8.797 kcal/mol, respectively. Our findings suggested that CuONPs are crucial in the mechanisms of folate metabolism and DNA replication associated with bacterial proliferation. This work will provide significant guidance for the biofabrication of CuONPs and their medical and industrial applications.

A narrative review of the synthesis, characterization, and applications of iron oxide nanoparticles

The significance of green synthesized nanomaterials with a uniform shape, reduced sizes, superior mechanical capabilities, phase microstructure, magnetic behavior, and superior performance cannot be overemphasized. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are found within the size range of 1-100 nm in nanomaterials and have a diverse range of applications in fields such as biomedicine, wastewater purification, and environmental remediation. Nevertheless, the understanding of their fundamental material composition, chemical reactions, toxicological properties, and research methodologies is constrained and extensively elucidated during their practical implementation. The importance of producing IONPs using advanced nanofabrication techniques that exhibit strong potential for disease therapy, microbial pathogen control, and elimination of cancer cells is underscored by the adoption of the green synthesis approach. These IONPs can serve as viable alternatives for soil remediation and the elimination of environmental contaminants. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the research conducted on different types of IONPs and IONP composite-based materials. It examines the synthesis methods and characterization techniques employed in these studies and also addresses the obstacles encountered in prior investigations with comparable objectives. A green engineering strategy was proposed for the synthesis, characterization, and application of IONPs and their composites with reduced environmental impact. Additionally, the influence of their phase structure, magnetic properties, biocompatibility, toxicity, milling time, nanoparticle size, and shape was also discussed. The study proposes the use of biological and physicochemical methods as a more viable alternative nanofabrication strategy that can mitigate the limitations imposed by the conventional methods of IONP synthesis.

The shape-dependent inhibitory effect of rhein/silver nanocomposites on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs)/nanopreparations as viral antagonists exhibited a structure-function correlation, i.e., the differences in surface area/volume ratio caused by the variations in shape and size could result in different biochemical properties and biological activities, suggesting an important impact of morphology and structure on the antiviral activity of TCM-based nanoparticles. However, few studies paid attention to this aspect. Here, the effect of TCM-based nanoparticles with different morphologies on their antiviral activity was explored by synthesizing rhein/silver nanocomposites (Rhe@AgNPs) with spherical (S-Rhe/Ag) and linear (L-Rhe/Ag) morphologies, using rhein (an active TCM ingredient) as a reducing agent and taking its self-assembly advantage. Using porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) as a model virus, the inhibitory effects of S-Rhe/Ag and L-Rhe/Ag on PRRSV were compared. Results showed that the product morphology could be regulated by varying pH values, and both S- and L-Rhe/Ag exhibited good dispersion and stability, but with a smaller size for L-Rhe/Ag. Antiviral experiments revealed that Rhe@AgNPs could effectively inhibit PRRSV infection, but the antiviral effect was morphology-dependent. Compared with L-Rhe/Ag, S-Rhe/Ag could more effectively inactivate PRRSV in vitro and antagonize its adsorption, invasion, replication, and release stages. Mechanistic studies indicated that Rhe@AgNPs could reduce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by PRRSV infection, and S-Rhe/Ag also had stronger ROS inhibitory effect. This work confirmed the inhibitory effect of Rhe@AgNPs with different morphologies on PRRSV and provided useful information for treating PRRSV infection with metal nanoparticles synthesized from TCM ingredients.

Fast and easy synthesis of silver, copper, and bimetallic nanoparticles on cellulose paper assisted by ultrasound

This work focuses on a systematic method to produce Ag, Cu, and Ag/Cu metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in situ assisted with ultrasound on cellulose paper. By tuning the concentration of AgNO3 and CuSO4 salt precursors and ultrasound time, combined with a fixed concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent, it was possible to control the size, morphology, and polydispersity of the resulting MNPs on cellulose papers. Notably, high yield and low polydispersity of MNPs and bimetallic nanoparticles are achieved by increasing the sonication time on paper samples pre-treated with salt precursors before reduction with AA. Moreover, mechanical analysis on paper samples presenting well-dispersed and distributed MNPs showed slightly decreasing values of Young's modulus compared to neat papers. The strain at break is substantially improved in papers containing solely Ag or Cu MNPs. The latter suggests that the elastic/plastic transition and deformation of papers are tuned by cellulose and MNPs interfacial interaction, as indicated by mechanical analysis. The proposed method provides insights into each factor affecting the sonochemistry in situ synthesis of MNPs on cellulose papers. In addition, it offers a straightforward alternative to scale up the production of MNPs on paper, ensuring an eco-friendly method.

Investigating the Effects of Biogenic Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Produced Using Papaver somniferum Extract on Oxidative Stress, Cytotoxicity, and the Induction of Apoptosis in the THP-1 Cell Line

This study investigated the effect of novel zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) biosynthesized employing Papaver somniferum leaf on oxidative stress, necrosis, and apoptosis in the leukemia cancer THP-1 cell. The obtained ZnO was examined using SEM, AFM, and TEM microscopy, which revealed an irregular spherical morphology with a size ranging from 20 to 30 nm, and the UV-vis absorbance revealed a strong absorption peak in the range of 360-370, nm confirming the production of ZnO NPs. THP-1 cells were subjected to an MTT, an EdU proliferation, a lactate dehydrogenase release tests, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) induction experiment, a DAPI staining detection assay, and a flow cytometric analysis for Annexin V to measure the effects of ZnO NPs on cancer cell growth inhibition, apoptosis, and necrosis. Our results show that ZnO NPs inhibit THP-1 line in a concentration-dependent pattern. It was observed that ZnO NPs triggered necrosis (cell death) and apoptosis in the cell line. ZnO NPs massively improved the formation of intracellular ROS, which is crucial in deactivating the development of leukemic cells. In conclusion, ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using Papaver somniferum extract have the ability to inhibit proliferation leukemic cancer cells, making them potential anticancer agents.

A State-of-the-Art Systemic Review on Selenium Nanoparticles: Mechanisms and Factors Influencing Biogenesis and Its Potential Applications

Selenium is a trace element required for the active function of numerous enzymes and various physiological processes. In recent years, selenium nanoparticles draw the attention of scientists and researchers because of its multifaceted uses. The process involved in chemically synthesized SeNPs has been found to be hazardous in nature, which has paved the way for safe and ecofriendly SeNPs to be developed in order to achieve sustainability. In comparison to chemical synthesis, SeNPs can be synthesized more safely and with greater flexibility utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants. This review focused on the synthesis of SeNPs utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants; the mechanisms involved in SeNP synthesis; and the effect of various abiotic factors on SeNP synthesis and morphological characteristics. This article discusses the synergies of SeNP synthesis via biological routes, which can help future researchers to synthesize SeNPs with more precision and employ them in desired fields.

Biogenic polymer nanoparticles to remove hydrophobic organic contaminants from water

Soil and water pollution is of significant concern worldwide because of the consequences of environmental degradation and harmful effects on human health. Water bodies are very much polluted by various organic and inorganic pollutants by different human activities, including industrial wastes. Environmental pollution remains high because of urbanization-induced industrial developments and human lifestyle. It accumulates pollutants in the environment including plants and living organisms. Even mothers' milk is poisoned because of the uncontrolled, widespread increase in pollution. The discharge levels of organic hydrophobic contaminants in the water and soil are increasing rapidly. This severe pollution must be remediated to upgrade the environment and ensure the safety of human beings. It is vital to eradicate soil and water pollution to guarantee sufficient food and water. Different techniques available to remove the pollutants vary according to the type of pollutants. Hydrophobic contaminants are more dangerous than heavy metals and other pollutants; they cannot be easily removed, requiring special care. Hydrophobic organoxenobiotics released in the environment pose severe contamination in soil and water. Therefore, developing efficient and cost-effective processes is necessary to remove hydrophobic contaminants from soil and water. With nanoparticle-mediated remediation techniques, the green-synthesized nanoparticles exhibit improved performance. This review consolidates reports on the remediation techniques of hydrophobic contaminants, focusing on green-synthesized remediation agents. The very limited works on green synthesis of polymeric nanoparticles, particularly polyurethane-based materials for organic contaminants removal demand more attention in this area. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Consolidated the effects of hydrophobic organic and plastic contaminants on environment degradation. Summarized the advantages of green synthesized polymer nanoparticles for efficient removal of hydrophobic contaminants. Discussed the different sources of pollution and remediation techniques referring 112 research works.

Both biogenic and chemically synthesized metal sulfide nanoparticles induce oxidative stress and enhance lipid accumulation in Rhodococcus opacus

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) find applications in many different industrial sectors. However, the fate of these NPs in the environment and their potential impact on organisms living in different ecosystems are not fully known. In this work, the individual effect of biogenic and chemically synthesized lead sulfide nanoparticles (PbSNPs) and cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdSNPs) on the activity of the oleaginous bacterium Rhodococcus opacus PD630 which belongs to an ecologically important genus Rhodococcus was investigated. A dose-dependent increase in PbSNPs and CdSNPs uptake by the bacterium was observed upto a maximum of 16.4 and 15.6 mg/g cell, corresponding to 98% and 95% uptake. In the case of chemically synthesized NPs, the specific PbSNPs and CdSNPs uptake were slightly less [15.5 and 14.8 mg/g cell], corresponding to 93.2% and 88.4% uptake. Both biogenic and chemically synthesized PbSNPs and CdSNPs did not affect the bacterial growth. On the other hand, the triacylglycerol (biodiesel) content in the bacterium increased from 30% to a maximum of 75% and 73% CDW due to oxidative stress induced by biogenic PbSNPs and CdSNPs. The results of induced oxidative stress by biogenic metal nanoparticle were similar to that induced by the chemically synthesized NPs.

Highly efficient visible light active ZnO/Cu-DPA composite photocatalysts for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with organic dye

Industrial effluents are a leading major threat for water contamination, subsequently which results in severe health associated risks. Hence, purifying wastewater before releasing into the water resources is essential to avoid contamination. In this study, ZnO/Cu-DPA nano-composites were prepared by altering the percentage of Cu-DPA (20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% which are denoted to be ZnO/20%Cu-DPA, ZnO/30%Cu-DPA, ZnO/40%Cu-DPA and ZnO/50%Cu-DPA) using a simple mechanical grinding process. Several spectroscopic studies were employed such as electron paramagnetic analysis (EPR), powdered X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), UV-Vis absorbance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope to characterize these nano-composites. The photo-catalytic activities of the prepared nano-composites were studied by degrading MB under visible light irradiation. ZnO, ZnO/20%Cu-DPA, ZnO/30%Cu-DPA, ZnO/40%Cu-DPA and ZnO/50%Cu-DPA degradation efficiencies were determined to be 71.8, 78.5, 77.1, and 66.1%, respectively. Among the composite catalysts, the ZnO/20%Cu-DPA coupled system are demonstrated the best efficiency (87%) for photo-degradation of MB within 80 min when exposed to visible light. The ZnO/Cu-DPA nano-composites had a greater MB photodegradation efficiency than pristine ZnO owing to p-n heterojunction in the linked system. Under visible light irradiation, the ZnO/20%Cu-DPA catalysed the conversion of dissolved O2 to hydroxyl radicals (OH·), triggering the reduction of MB. This suggests that ·OH is the primary specific active radical involved in the photo-catalytic decomposition of MB. Furthermore, EPR analysis indicates the existence of ·OH in the photo-catalytic system. The proposed nano-composites (ZnO/20%Cu-DPA) reusability was investigated across three cycles as the most efficient photo-catalyst. The results show that, the ZnO/Cu-DPA nano-catalyst is a potential candidate for the remediation of dirty water.

Antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of the silver nanoparticles synthesized using aqueous extracts of coconut meat (Cocos nucifera L)

Human pathogenic fungi and bacteria pose a huge threat to human life, accounting for high rates of mortality every year. Unfortunately, the past few years have seen an upsurge in multidrug resistance pathogens. Consequently, finding an effective alternative antimicrobial agent is of utmost importance. Hence, this study aimed to phytofabricate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous extracts of the solid endosperm of Cocos nucifera L, also known as coconut meat (Cm). Green synthesis is a facile, cost-effective and eco-friendly methods which has several benefits over other physical and chemical methods. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The Cm-AgNPs showed a UV-Vis peak at 435 nm and were crystalline and quasi-spherical, with an average size of 15 nm. The FTIR spectrum displayed functional groups of phenols, alkaloids, sugars, amines, and carbonyl compounds, which are vital in the reduction and capping of NPs. The antibacterial and anticandidal efficacy of the Cm-AgNPs was assessed by the agar-well diffusion method and expressed as a zone of inhibition (ZOI). Amongst all the test isolates, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Candida auris, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis were more susceptible to the NPs with a ZOI of 26.33 ± 0.57 mm, 19.33 ± 0.57 mm, and 18 ± 0.76 mm. The MIC and MFC values for Candida spp. were higher than the bacterial test isolates. Scanning electron microscopic studies of all the test isolates at their MIC concentrations showed drastically altered cell morphology, indicating that the NPs could successfully cross the cell barrier and damage the cell integrity, causing cell death. This study reports the efficacy of Cm-AgNPs against several Candida and bacterial strains, which had not been reported in earlier studies. Furthermore, the synthesized AgNPs exhibited significant antioxidant activity. Thus, the findings of this study strongly imply that the Cm-AgNPs can serve as promising candidates for therapeutic applications, especially against multidrug-resistant isolates of Candida and bacteria. However, further investigation is needed to understand the mode of action and biosafety.

Development and Evaluation of Topical Zinc Oxide Nanogels Formulation Using Dendrobium anosmum and Its Effect on Acne Vulgaris

Zinc oxide nanoparticles have high levels of biocompatibility, a low impact on environmental contamination, and suitable to be used as an ingredient for environmentally friendly skincare products. In this study, biogenically synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles using Dendrobium anosum are used as a reducing and capping agent for topical anti-acne nanogels, and the antimicrobial effect of the nanogel is assessed on Cutibacterium acne and Staphylococcus aureus. Dendrobium anosmum leaf extract was examined for the presence of secondary metabolites and its total amount of phenolic and flavonoid content was determined. Both the biogenically and chemogenic-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles were compared using UV-Visible spectrophotometer, FE-SEM, XRD, and FTIR. To produce the topical nanogel, the biogenic and chemogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles were mixed with a carbomer and hydroxypropyl-methyl cellulose (HPMC) polymer. The mixtures were then tested for physical and chemical characteristics. To assess their anti-acne effectiveness, the mixtures were tested against C. acne and S. aureus. The biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles have particle sizes of 20 nm and a high-phase purity. In comparison to chemogenic nanoparticles, the hydrogels with biogenically synthesized nanoparticles was more effective against Gram-positive bacteria. Through this study, the hybrid nanogels was proven to be effective against the microbes that cause acne and to be potentially used as a green product against skin infections.

Advances in Phytonanotechnology: A Plant-Mediated Green Synthesis of Metal Nanoparticles Using Phyllanthus Plant Extracts and Their Antimicrobial and Anticancer Applications

Nanoparticles and nanotechnology developments continue to advance the livelihood of humankind. However, health challenges due to microorganisms and cancerous cells continue to threaten many people's lives globally. Therefore, new technological interventions are of great importance. The phytochemicals present in medicinal plants are suggested as biocompatible, cost-effective, and regenerative sources that can be utilized for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Different plant extracts with various phytochemical constituents can form nanoparticles with specific shapes, sizes, and optical properties. This review focuses on advances in green nanotechnology and provides details on reliable synthetic routes toward medically and biocompatible relevant metallic nanoparticles. We cover a wide range of applications that use phytonanoparticles with an in-depth look at what makes these materials interesting. The study also provides details of the literature on the interventions made in phytonanotechnology for the production of plant-mediated synthesis and capped metallic nanoparticles and their applications in various industries. It was observed that a variety of plants have been well studied, and detailed findings have been reported; however, the study of Phyllanthus is still in its early stages, and more needs to be uncovered.

Green Synthesis of CdS and CdS/rGO Nanocomposites: Evaluation of Electrochemical, Antimicrobial, and Photocatalytic Properties

The green approach has been employed for the synthesis of various types of nanomaterials including metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, and carbon-based nanomaterials. These processes involve natural sources that contain bioactive compounds that act as reducing, stabilizing, and capping agents for the formation and stabilization of nanomaterials. This study reports the green synthesis of CdS and CdS/rGO nanocomposites using Lactobacillus bacteria. The UV-visible spectrophotometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra confirm the synthesis of the nanocomposite. The electrochemical characterization using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and EIS revealed that the CdS/rGO nanocomposites showed a higher electron transfer rate compared with CdS nanoparticles, indicating the potential of the nanocomposites for biosensing applications. The zone of inhibition revealed significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus for both CdS nanoparticles and CdS/rGO nanocomposites. Additionally, CdS/rGO nanoparticles exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue dye. Overall, this study demonstrates that the synthesized CdS and CdS/rGO nanocomposites have good electrochemical properties, photocatalytic, and antimicrobial activity and, therefore, can be employed for various applications such as biosensing, photocatalysis, and antimicrobial activity.

Green synthesis of Piper nigrum copper-based nanoparticles: in silico study and ADMET analysis to assess their antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic effects

Nanobiotechnology is a popular branch of science that is gaining interest among scientists and researchers as it allows for the green manufacturing of nanoparticles by employing plants as reducing agents. This method is safe, cheap, reproducible, and eco-friendly. In this study, the therapeutic property of Piper nigrum fruit was mixed with the antibacterial activity of metallic copper to produce copper nanoparticles. The synthesis of copper nanoparticles was indicated by a color change from brown to blue. Physical characterization of Piper nigrum copper nanoparticles (PN-CuNPs) was performed using UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, XRD, and Zeta analyzer. PN-CuNPs exhibited potential antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities. PN-CuNPs have shown concentration-dependent, enhanced free radical scavenging activity, reaching maximum values of 92%, 90%, and 86% with DPPH, H2O2, and PMA tests, respectively. The antibacterial zone of inhibition of PN-CuNPs was the highest against Staphylococcus aureus (23 mm) and the lowest against Escherichia coli (10 mm). PN-CuNPs showed 80% in vitro cytotoxicity against MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines. Furthermore, more than 50 components of Piper nigrum extract were selected and subjected to in silico molecular docking using the C-Docker protocol in the binding pockets of glutathione reductase, E. coli DNA gyrase topoisomerase II, and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine to discover their druggability. Pipercyclobutanamide A (26), pipernigramide F (32), and pipernigramide G (33) scored the highest Gibbs free energy at 50.489, 51.9306, and 58.615 kcal/mol, respectively. The ADMET/TOPKAT analysis confirmed the favorable pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and toxicity profiles of the three promising compounds. The present in silico analysis helps us to understand the possible mechanisms behind the antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities of CuNPs and recommends them as implicit inhibitors of selected proteins.

Adsorption isotherms and kinetics for Pb(ii) ion removal from aqueous solutions with biogenic metal oxide nanoparticles

This study investigates the sorption removal of lead(ii) ions using zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper(ii) oxide (CuO) nanoparticles synthesized through a wet burning method with the aid of plant extract from Serratula coronata L. The effect of plant collection time on polyphenol content was investigated and optimal conditions were determined. The structural and chemical properties of the nanoparticles were studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A comparative analysis of lead ion sorption on the surface of synthesized nanoparticles was conducted. The kinetic study revealed that the sorption process follows a pseudo-second-order mechanism, and the Freundlich sorption model provides a better fit for the experimental data. ZnO and CuO nanoparticles exhibited significant sorption capacities, with values of 163.6 and 153.8 mg g-1, respectively.

How could actinobacteria augment the growth and redox homeostasis in barley plants grown in TiO2NPs-contaminated soils? A growth and biochemical study

The increases in titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) released into the environment have raised concerns about their toxicity. However, their phytotoxic impact on plants is not well studied. Therefore, this study aimed at a deeper understanding of the TiO2-NPs phytotoxic impact on barley (Hordeum vulgare) growth and stress defense. We also hypothesized that soil inoculation with bioactive Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 strain can be applied as a biological fertilizer to alleviate TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity. At TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity level, photosynthesis was significantly retarded (∼50% reduction) in TiO2-NPs treated-barley plants which accordingly affect the biomass of barley plants. This retardation was accompanied by a remarkable induction of oxidative damage (H2O2, lipid peroxidation) with a concomitant reduction in the antioxidant defense metabolism. At a glance, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 ameliorated the reduction in growth by enhancing the photosynthetic efficiency in contaminated barley plants. Moreover, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 inoculation reduced the oxidative damage induced by TiO2-NPs via quenching H2O2 production and lipid peroxidation. Regarding the antioxidant defense arsenal, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 enhanced both enzymatic (e.g. peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), …. etc.) and non-enzymatic (glutathione (GSH), ascorbate (ASC), polyphenols, flavonoids, tocopherols) antioxidants in shoots and to a greater extent roots of barley plants. Moreover, the inoculation significantly enhanced the heavy metal-detoxifying metabolites (eg. phytochelatins, glutaredoxin, thioredoxin, peroxiredoxin) as well as metal-detoxifying enzymes in barley shoots and more apparently in roots of TiO2-NPs stressed plants. Furthermore, there was an organ-specific response to TiO2-NPs and Rhodospirillum sp. JY3. To this end, this study shed light, for the first time, on the molecular bases underlie TiO2-NPs stress mitigating impact of Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 and it introduced Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 as a promising eco-friendly tool in managing environmental risks to maintain agricultural sustainability.

A Sustainable, Green-Processed, Ag-Nanoparticle-Incorporated Eggshell-Derived Biomaterial for Wound-Healing Applications

The eggshell membrane (ESM) is a natural biomaterial with unique physical and mechanical properties that make it a promising candidate for wound-healing applications. However, the ESM's inherent properties can be enhanced through incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which have been shown to have antimicrobial properties. In this study, commercially produced AgNPs and green-processed AgNPs were incorporated into ESM and evaluated for their physical, biological, and antimicrobial properties for potential dermal application. The ESM was extracted using various techniques, and then treated with either commercially produced AgNPs (Sigma-Aldrich, Poole, UK) or green-synthesized AgNPs (Metalchemy, London, UK) to produce AgNPs-ESM samples. The physical characteristics of the samples were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the biological properties were assessed through in vitro studies using human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) and BJ cells. The SEM analysis of the AgNPs-ESM samples showed localization of AgNPs on the ESM surface, and that the ESM maintained its structural integrity following AgNP incorporation. The FTIR confirmed loading of AgNPs to ESM samples. The biological studies showed that the 5 μg/mL AgNPs-ESM samples were highly biocompatible with both HDFs and BJ cells, and had good viability and proliferation rates. Additionally, the AgNPs-ESM samples demonstrated pro-angiogenic properties in the CAM assay, indicating their potential for promoting new blood vessel growth. Assessment of the antimicrobial activity of the enhanced AgNPs/ESMs was validated using the International Standard ISO 16869:2008 methodology and exploited Cladosporium, which is one of the most commonly identified fungi in wounds, as the test microorganism (≥5 × 106 cells/mL). The AgNPs-ESM samples displayed promising antimicrobial efficacy as evidenced by the measured zone of inhibition. Notably, the green-synthesized AgNPs demonstrated greater zones of inhibition (~17 times larger) compared to commercially available AgNPs (Sigma-Aldrich). Although both types of AgNP exhibited long-term stability, the Metalchemy-modified samples demonstrated a slightly stronger inhibitory effect. Overall, the AgNPs-ESM samples developed in this study exhibited desirable physical, biological, and antimicrobial properties for potential dermal wound-dressing applications. The use of green-processed AgNPs in the fabrication of the AgNPs-ESM samples highlights the potential for sustainable and environmentally friendly wound-healing therapies. Further research is required to assess the long-term biocompatibility and effectiveness of these biomaterials in vivo.

Recent trends and perspectives in the application of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials for sustainable agriculture

Sustainable ecosystem management leads to the use of eco-friendly agricultural techniques for crop production. One of them is the use of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials and nanoparticles, which have proven to be a valuable option for the improvement of agricultural food systems. Moreover, the biological synthesis of these nanoparticles, from plants, bacteria, and fungi, also contributes to their eco-friendly and sustainable characteristics. Nanoparticles, which vary in size from 1 to 100 nm have a variety of mechanisms that are safer and more efficient than conventional fertilizers. Their usage as fertilizers and insecticides in agriculture is gaining favor in the scientific community to maximize crop output. More studies in this field will increase our understanding of this new technology and its broad acceptance in terms of performance, affordability, and environmental protection, as certain nanoparticles may outperform conventional fertilizers and insecticides. Accordingly, to the information gathered in this review, nanoparticles show remarkable potential for enhancing crop production, improving soil quality, and protecting the environment, however, metal and metal oxide NPs are not widely employed in agriculture. Many features of nanoparticles are yet left over, and it is necessary to uncover them. In this sense, this review article provides an overview of various types of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles used in agriculture, their characterization and synthesis, the recent research on them, and their possible application for the improvement of crop productivity in a sustainable manner.

Plant-derived nanomaterials (PDNM): a review on pharmacological potentials against pathogenic microbes, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and some metabolic diseases

Plant-derived nanomaterials (PDNM) have gained significant attention recently due to their potential pharmacological applications against pathogenic microbes, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and certain metabolic diseases. This review introduces the concept of PDNMs and their unique properties, including their small size, high surface area, and ability to penetrate biological barriers. Besides various methods for synthesizing PDNMs, such as green synthesis techniques that utilize plant extracts and natural compounds, the advantages of using plant-derived materials, such as their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity, were elucidated. In addition, it examines the recent and emerging trends in nanomaterials derived from plant approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance and metabolic diseases. The sizes of nanomaterials and their surface areas are vital as they play essential roles in the interactions and relationships between these materials and the biological components or organization. We critically analyze the biomedical applications of nanoparticles which include antibacterial composites for implantable devices and nanosystems to combat antimicrobial resistance, enhance antibiotic delivery, and improve microbial diagnostic/detection systemsIn addition, plant extracts can potentially interfere with metabolic syndrome pathways; hence most nano-formulations can reduce chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, lipid profile, and antimicrobial resistance. As a result, these innovative plant-based nanosystems may be a promising contender for various pharmacological applications.

Therapeutic Potential of Green-Engineered ZnO Nanoparticles on Rotenone-Exposed D. melanogaster (Oregon R+): Unveiling Ameliorated Biochemical, Cellular, and Behavioral Parameters

Nanotechnology holds significant ameliorative potential against neurodegenerative diseases, as it can protect the therapeutic substance and allow for its sustained release. In this study, the reducing and capping agents of Urtica dioica (UD), Matricaria chamomilla (MC), and Murraya koenigii (MK) extracts were used to synthesize bio-mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) against bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and against rotenone-induced toxicities in D. melanogaster for the first time. Their optical and structural properties were analyzed via FT-IR, DLS, XRD, EDS, SEM, UV-Vis, and zeta potential. The antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the fabricated ZnO-NPs were evaluated employing cell-free models (DPPH and ABTS) and the well diffusion method, respectively. Rotenone (500 µM) was administered to Drosophila third instar larvae and freshly emerged flies for 24-120 h, either alone or in combination with plant extracts (UD, MC, an MK) and their biogenic ZnO-NPs. A comparative study on the protective effects of synthesized NPs was undertaken against rotenone-induced neurotoxic, cytotoxic, and behavioral alterations using an acetylcholinesterase inhibition assay, dye exclusion test, and locomotor parameters. The findings revealed that among the plant-derived ZnO-NPs, MK-ZnO NPs exhibit strong antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, followed by UD-ZnO NPs and MC-ZnO NPs. In this regard, ethno-nano medicinal therapeutic uses mimic similar effects in D. melanogaster by suppressing oxidative stress by restoring biochemical parameters (AchE and proteotoxicity activity) and lower cellular toxicity. These findings suggest that green-engineered ZnO-NPs have the potential to significantly enhance outcomes, with the promise of effective therapies for neurodegeneration, and could be used as a great alternative for clinical development.

Green Synthesis of Mesquite-Gum-Stabilized Gold Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications: Physicochemical Properties and Biocompatibility Assessment

Using cytotoxic reducing and stabilizing agents in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) limits their use in biomedical applications. One strategy to overcome this problem is using "green" synthesis methodologies using polysaccharides. In the present study, we propose a green methodology for synthetizing AuNPs with mesquite gum (MG) as a reducing agent and steric stabilizer in Gold(III) chloride trihydrate aqueous solutions to obtain biocompatible nanoparticles that can be used for biomedical applications. Through this method, AuNPs can be produced without using elevated temperatures or pressures. For synthetizing gold nanoparticles coated with mesquite gum (AuNPs@MG), Gold(III) chloride trihydrate was used as a precursor, and mesquite gum was used as a stabilizing and reducing agent. The AuNPs obtained were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The stability in biological media (phosphate buffer solution), cytotoxicity (MTT assay, hematoxylin, and eosin staining), and hemocompatibility (Hemolysis assay) were measured at different concentrations and exposure times. The results showed the successful synthesis of AuNPs@MG with sizes ranging from 3 to 30 nm and a zeta potential of -31 mV. The AuNPs@MG showed good colloidal stability in PBS (pH 7.4) for up to 24 h. Finally, cytotoxicity assays showed no changes in cell metabolism or cell morphology. These results suggest that these gold nanoparticles have potential biomedical applications because of their low cytotoxicity and hemotoxicity and improved stability at a physiological pH.

Revisiting the Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles: Uncovering Influences of Plant Extracts as Reducing Agents for Enhanced Synthesis Efficiency and Its Biomedical Applications

Background

Conventional nanoparticle synthesis methods involve harsh conditions, high costs, and environmental pollution. In this context, researchers are actively searching for sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives to conventional chemical synthesis methods. This has led to the development of green synthesis procedures among which the exploration of the plant-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles experienced a great development. Especially, because plant extracts can work as reducing and stabilizing agents. This opens up new possibilities for cost-effective, environmentally-friendly nanoparticle synthesis with enhanced size uniformity and stability. Moreover, bio-inspired nanoparticles derived from plants exhibit intriguing pharmacological properties, making them highly promising for use in medical applications due to their biocompatibility and nano-dimension.

Objective

This study investigates the role of specific phytochemicals, such as phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and proteins, in plant-mediated nanoparticle synthesis together with their influence on particle size, stability, and properties. Additionally, we highlight the potential applications of these bio-derived nanoparticles, particularly with regard to drug delivery, disease management, agriculture, bioremediation, and application in other industries.

Methodology

Extensive research on scientific databases identified green synthesis methods, specifically plant-mediated synthesis, with a focus on understanding the contributions of phytochemicals like phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and proteins. The database search covered the field's development over the past 15 years.

Results

Insights gained from this exploration highlight plant-mediated green synthesis for cost-effective nanoparticle production with significant pharmacological properties. Utilizing renewable biological resources and controlling nanoparticle characteristics through biomolecule interactions offer promising avenues for future research and applications.

Conclusion

This review delves into the scientific intricacies of plant-mediated synthesis of nanoparticles, highlighting the advantages of this approach over the traditional chemical synthesis methods. The study showcases the immense potential of green synthesis for medical and other applications, aiming to inspire further research in this exciting area and promote a more sustainable future.

Green Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles with Curcumin or Açai in the Tissue Repair of Palatal Wounds

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of treatment with gold nanoparticles (GNPs) reduced with Curcumin (Curcuma longa L.) or Açai (Euterpe oleracea) to a standard commercial treatment of the pharmacological type (Omcilon®) and an electrophysical agent (photobiomodulation) in the palatal wounds of rats. As for the in vitro assay, a cell viability test was performed to assess the toxicity of the synthesized nanoparticles. In vivo assay: 60 Wistar rats were divided into five groups (n = 12): I. Palatal Wound (PW); II. PW + Photobiomodulation (PBM); III. PW + Omcilon®; IV. PW + GNPs-Cur (0.025 mg/mL); V. PW + GNPs-Açai (0.025 mg/mL). Animals were first anesthetized, and circular lesions in the palatine mucosa were induced using a 4 mm-diameter punch. The first treatment session started 24 h after the injury and occurred daily for 5 days. The animals were euthanized, and the palatal mucosa tissue was removed for histological, biochemical, and molecular analysis. GNPs-Açai were able to significantly reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and increase anti-inflammatory ones, reduce oxidant markers, and reduce inflammatory infiltrate while increasing the collagen area and contraction rate of the wound, along with an improved visual qualification. The present study demonstrated that the proposed therapies of GNPs synthesized greenly, thus associating their effects with those of plants, favor the tissue repair process in palatal wounds.

Improving the Production of Secondary Metabolites via the Application of Biogenic Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in the Calli of Delonix elata: A Potential Medicinal Plant

The implementation of nanotechnology in the field of plant tissue culture has demonstrated an interesting impact on in vitro plant growth and development. Furthermore, the plant tissue culture accompanying nanoparticles has been showed to be a reliable alternative for the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Herein, the effectiveness of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on the growth of Delonix elata calli, as well as their phytochemical profiles, were investigated. Delonix elata seeds were collected and germinated, and then the plant species was determined based on the PCR product sequence of ITS1 and ITS4 primers. Afterward, the calli derived from Delonix elata seedlings were subjected to 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mg/L of ZnONPs. The ZnONPs were biologically synthesized using the Ricinus communis aqueous leaf extract, which acts as a capping and reducing agent, and zinc nitrate solution. The nanostructures of the biogenic ZnONPs were confirmed using different techniques like UV-visible spectroscopy (UV), zeta potential measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Adding 30 mg/L of ZnONPs to the MS media (containing 2.5 µM 2,4-D and 1 µM BAP) resulted in the highest callus fresh weight (5.65 g) compared to the control and other ZnONP treatments. Similarly, more phenolic accumulation (358.85 µg/g DW) and flavonoid (112.88 µg/g DW) contents were achieved at 30 mg/L. Furthermore, the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed significant increments in gallic acid, quercetin, hesperidin, and rutin in all treated ZnONP calli compared to the control. On the other hand, the gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis of the calli extracts revealed that nine phytochemical compounds were common among all extracts. Moreover, the most predominant compound found in calli treated with 20, 30, 40, and 50 mg/L of ZnONPs was bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, with percentage areas of 27.33, 38.68, 22.66, and 17.98%, respectively. The predominant compounds in the control and in calli treated with 10 mg/L of ZnONPs were octadecanoic acid, 2-propenyl ester and heptanoic acid. In conclusion, in this study, green ZnONPs exerted beneficial effects on Delonix elata calli and improved their production of bioactive compounds, especially at a dose of 30 mg/L.

Impact of Diverse Parameters on the Physicochemical Characteristics of Green-Synthesized Zinc Oxide-Copper Oxide Nanocomposites Derived from an Aqueous Extract of Garcinia mangostana L. Leaf

Compared to conventional metal oxide nanoparticles, metal oxide nanocomposites have demonstrated significantly enhanced efficiency in various applications. In this study, we aimed to synthesize zinc oxide-copper oxide nanocomposites (ZnO-CuO NCs) using a green synthesis approach. The synthesis involved mixing 4 g of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O with different concentrations of mangosteen (G. mangostana) leaf extract (0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 g/mL) and 2 or 4 g of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, followed by calcination at temperatures of 300, 400 and 500 °C. The synthesized ZnO-CuO NCs were characterized using various techniques, including a UV-Visible spectrometer (UV-Vis), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) with an Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer. Based on the results of this study, the optical, structural and morphological properties of ZnO-CuO NCs were found to be influenced by the concentration of the mangosteen leaf extract, the calcination temperature and the amount of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O used. Among the tested conditions, ZnO-CuO NCs derived from 0.05 g/mL of mangosteen leaf extract, 4 g of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and 2 g of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, calcinated at 500 °C exhibited the following characteristics: the lowest energy bandgap (2.57 eV), well-defined Zn-O and Cu-O bands, the smallest particle size of 39.10 nm with highest surface area-to-volume ratio and crystalline size of 18.17 nm. In conclusion, we successfully synthesized ZnO-CuO NCs using a green synthesis approach with mangosteen leaf extract. The properties of the nanocomposites were significantly influenced by the concentration of the plant extract, the calcination temperature and the amount of precursor used. These findings provide valuable insights for researchers seeking innovative methods for the production and utilization of nanocomposite materials.

Nanoparticles-induced potential toxicity on human health: Applications, toxicity mechanisms, and evaluation models

Nanoparticles (NPs) have become one of the most popular objects of scientific study during the past decades. However, despite wealth of study reports, still there is a gap, particularly in health toxicology studies, underlying mechanisms, and related evaluation models to deeply understanding the NPs risk effects. In this review, we first present a comprehensive landscape of the applications of NPs on health, especially addressing the role of NPs in medical diagnosis, therapy. Then, the toxicity of NPs on health systems is introduced. We describe in detail the effects of NPs on various systems, including respiratory, nervous, endocrine, immune, and reproductive systems, and the carcinogenicity of NPs. Furthermore, we unravels the underlying mechanisms of NPs including ROS accumulation, mitochondrial damage, inflammatory reaction, apoptosis, DNA damage, cell cycle, and epigenetic regulation. In addition, the classical study models such as cell lines and mice and the emerging models such as 3D organoids used for evaluating the toxicity or scientific study are both introduced. Overall, this review presents a critical summary and evaluation of the state of understanding of NPs, giving readers more better understanding of the NPs toxicology to remedy key gaps in knowledge and techniques.

Nano-stevia interaction: Past, present, and future

Nanotechnology has recently been emerged as a transformative technology that offers efficient and sustainable options for nano-bio interface. There has been a considerable interest in exploring the factors affecting elicitation mechanism and nanomaterials have been emerged as strong elicitors in medicinal plants. Stevia rebaudiana is well-known bio-sweetener and the presence of zero calorie, steviol glycosides (SGs) in the leaves of S. rebaudiana have made it a desirable crop to be cultivated on large scale to obtain its higher yield and maximal content of high quality natural sweeteners. Besides, phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidants are abundant in stevia which contribute to its medicinal importance. Currently, scientists are trying to increase the market value of stevia by the enhancement in production of its bioactive compounds. As such, various in vitro and cell culture strategies have been adopted. In stevia agronanotechnology, nanoparticles behave as elicitors for the triggering of its secondary metabolites, specifically rebaudioside A. This review article discusses the importance of S. rebaudiana and SGs, conventional approaches that have failed to increase the desired yield and quality of stevia, modern approaches that are currently being applied to obtain utmost benefits of SGs, and future needs of advanced technologies for further exploitation of this wonder of nature.

Aboyewa J, Moabelo KL, Sibuyi NRS, Meyer S, Onani MO, Meyer M, Madiehe AM. Anticancer, Antioxidant, and Catalytic Activities of Green Synthesized Gold Nanoparticles Using Avocado Seed Aqueous Extract

Disposal of agricultural waste has a negative impact on the environment and human health and may contribute to the greenhouse effect. The field of nanotechnology could provide alternative solutions to upcycle agricultural wastes in a safer manner into high-end value products. Organic waste from plants contain biomaterials that could serve as reducing and capping agents in the synthesis of nanomaterials with enhanced activities for use in biomedical and environmental applications. Persea americana (avocado) is a fruit with a high nutritional value; however, despite its rich phytochemical profile, its seed is often discarded as waste. Therefore, this study aimed to upcycle avocado seeds through the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and evaluate their anticancer, antioxidant, and catalytic activities. The biosynthesis of avocado seed extract (AvoSE)-mediated AuNPs (AvoSE-AuNPs) was achieved following the optimization of various reaction parameters, including pH, temperature, extract, and gold salt concentrations. The AvoSE-AuNPs were poly-dispersed and anisotropic, with average core and hydrodynamic sizes of 14 ± 3.7 and 101.39 ± 1.4 nm, respectively. The AvoSE-AuNPs showed excellent antioxidant potential in terms of ferric reducing antioxidant power (343.88 ± 0.001 μmolAAE/L), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (128.80 ± 0.0159 μmolTE/L), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (1822.02 ± 12.6338 μmolTE/L); significantly reduced the viability of Caco-2 and PC-3 cells in a dose-dependent manner; and efficiently reduced 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol. This study demonstrated how avocado seeds, an agricultural waste, can be used as sources of new bioactive materials for the synthesis of AuNPs, which have excellent antioxidant, anticancer, and catalytic activities, showing AvoSE-AuNPs' versatility in various applications. In addition, the AvoSE-AuNPs exhibited good stability and recyclability during the catalytic activity, which is significant because some of the primary issues with the use of metallic NPs as catalysts are around the cost-effectiveness, recovery, and reusability of the catalyst.

Green, facile and fast synthesis of silver nanoparticles by using solution plasma techniques and their antibacterial and anticancer activities

We herein present a simple, fast, efficient and environmentally friendly method for preparing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the solution plasma method in the presence of extracts from Paramignya trimera (P. trimera). The effects of P. trimera extract concentrations and the applied voltage on the formation of AgNPs were investigated. Surface plasmon resonance spectra show a strong peak at 413 nm for the prepared samples. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurement results indicated the presence of possible functional groups in the prepared AgNPs. Morphological analysis revealed that the AgNPs were spherical with an average size of 8 nm. The prepared AgNPs exhibited good stability in solution compared to that of AgNPs prepared by the solution plasma technique without P. trimera extract. The formation mechanism of AgNPs is also proposed. The prepared AgNPs exhibited high antibacterial ability against Gram (+) Staphylococcus aureus, Gram (-) Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and strong anticancer activity for the AGS gastric cancer cell line. The obtained results demonstrated that this is a simple, rapid, environmentally friendly method for preparing AgNPs instead of conventional methods using chemical reducing agents for potential applications.

Exploring the Paradigm of Phyto-Nanofabricated Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Recent Advancements, Applications, and Challenges

The development of nanotechnology, in particular metal oxide nanoparticles, has captured immense scientific attention in the global arena due to their unique properties leading to their unique diverse applications. But the use of toxic precursors and high operational cost make existing methodologies inefficient for synthesising metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs). Biogenic synthesis of MONPs has been hailed as a more sustainable approach for the synthesis of NPs due to its alignment with the principles of green chemistry. Microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, algae), animal sources (silk, fur, etc.), and plants are effective, low-cost, and eco-friendly means of synthesizing MONPs since they possess a high bio-reduction abilities to produce NPs of various shapes and sizes. The current review encompasses recent advancements in the field of plant-mediated MONP synthesis and characterisation. The detailed evaluation of various synthesis processes and parameters, key influencing factors affecting the synthesis efficiency and product morphology, practical applications with insight into the associated limitations and challenges presents a valuable database that will be helpful in developing alternative prospects and potential engineering applications.

Metal-Based Nanoparticles in Food Packaging and Coating Technologies: A Review

Food security has continued to be a topic of interest in our world due to the increasing demand for food. Many technologies have been adopted to enhance food supply and narrow the demand gap. Thus, the attempt to use nanotechnology to improve food security and increase supply has emerged due to the severe shortcomings of conventional technologies, which have made them insufficient to cater to the continuous demand for food products. Hence, nanoparticles have been identified to play a major role in areas involving food production, protection, and shelf-life extensions. Specifically, metal-based nanoparticles have been singled out to play an important role in manufacturing materials with outstanding properties, which can help increase the shelf-life of different food materials. The physicochemical and biological properties of metal-based nanoparticles, such as the large surface area and antimicrobial properties, have made them suitable and adequately useful, not just as a regular packaging material but as a functional material upon incorporation into biopolymer matrices. These, amongst many other reasons, have led to their wide synthesis and applications, even though their methods of preparation and risk evaluation remain a topic of concern. This review, therefore, briefly explores the available synthetic methods, physicochemical properties, roles, and biological properties of metal-based nanoparticles for food packaging. Furthermore, the associated limitations, alongside quality and safety considerations, of these materials were summarily explored. Although this area of research continues to garner attention, this review showed that metal-based nanoparticles possess great potential to be a leading material for food packaging if the problem of migration and toxicity can be effectively modulated.

Synthesis, characterization and antifungal potential of titanium dioxide nanoparticles against fungal disease (Ustilago tritici) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Nanoparticles (NPs) preparation using a green as well as environmentally acceptable processes has achieved a lot of attention in recent decade. The current study compared the synthesis of titania (TiO₂) nanoparticles synthesized from leaf extracts of two plant species (Trianthema portulacastrum, Chenopodium quinoa) and traditional approach by chemical preparation. The effects of no calcination on the physical characteristics of TiO₂ NPs as well as their antifungal effects were examined and compared with the already reported calcinated TiO₂ NPs. The produced TiO₂ NPs were evaluated using high-tech techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), and elemental mapping. TiO₂ NPs prepared by sol-gel technique (T1) and prepared from extractions from leaves of T. portulacastrum (T2), and C. quinoa (T3) were either calcinated or non calcinated and tested against fungal disease (Ustilago tritici) of wheat for antifungal efficacy. The -peak (2θ) at 25.3 was confirmed by XRD to be connected with the anatase (101) form in both cases but before calcination, NPs were lacking the rutile and brookite peaks. The results showed that all types of TiO₂ NPs examined had good antifungal activity against U. tritici, but those made from C. quinoa plant extract have good antifungal activity against disease. TiO₂ NPs which are produced by the green methods (T2, T3) have the highest antifungal activity (58%, 57% respectively), while minimal activity (19%) was recorded when NPs were synthesized using the sol-gel method (T1) with 25 μl/mL. Non calcinated TiO₂ NPs have less antifungal potential than calcined TiO₂ NPs. It can be concluded that calcination may be preferred for efficient antifungal activity when using titania nanoparticles. The green technology may be used on a larger scale with less damaging TiO₂ NP production and can be utilized against fungal disease on wheat crop to reduce crop losses worldwide.

Current Status of Omics in Biological Quality Elements for Freshwater Biomonitoring

Freshwater ecosystems have been experiencing various forms of threats, mainly since the last century. The severity of this adverse scenario presents unprecedented challenges to human health, water supply, agriculture, forestry, ecological systems, and biodiversity, among other areas. Despite the progress made in various biomonitoring techniques tailored to specific countries and biotic communities, significant constraints exist, particularly in assessing and quantifying biodiversity and its interplay with detrimental factors. Incorporating modern techniques into biomonitoring methodologies presents a challenging topic with multiple perspectives and assertions. This review aims to present a comprehensive overview of the contemporary advancements in freshwater biomonitoring, specifically by utilizing omics methodologies such as genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and multi-omics. The present study aims to elucidate the rationale behind the imperative need for modernization in this field. This will be achieved by presenting case studies, examining the diverse range of organisms that have been studied, and evaluating the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with the utilization of these methodologies. The utilization of advanced high-throughput bioinformatics techniques represents a sophisticated approach that necessitates a significant departure from the conventional practices of contemporary freshwater biomonitoring. The significant contributions of omics techniques in the context of biological quality elements (BQEs) and their interpretations in ecological problems are crucial for biomonitoring programs. Such contributions are primarily attributed to the previously overlooked identification of interactions between different levels of biological organization and their responses, isolated and combined, to specific critical conditions.

In vitro investigation of silver nanoparticles synthesized using Gracilaria veruccosa - A seaweed against multidrug resistant Staphylococcusaureus

In recent years, the biosynthesis of silver (Ag) nanoparticles has attracted a great deal of interest for applications in biomedicine and bioremediation. In the present study, Gracilaria veruccosa extract was used to synthesize Ag nanoparticles for investigating their antibacterial and antibiofilm potentials. The color shift from olive green to brown indicated the synthesis of AgNPs by plasma resonance at 411 nm. Physical and chemical characterization revealed that AgNPs of 20-25 nm sizes were synthesized. Detecting functional groups, such as carboxylic acids and alkenes, suggested that the bioactive molecules in the G. veruccosa extract assisted the synthesis of AgNPs. X-ray diffraction verified the s purity and crystallinity of the AgNPs with an average diameter of 25 nm, while DLS analysis showed a negative surface charge of -22.5 mV. Moreover, AgNPs were tested in vitro for antibacterial and antibiofilm efficacies against S. aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AgNPs against S. aureus was 3.8 μg/mL. Light and fluorescence microscopy proved the potential of AgNPs to disrupt the mature biofilm of S. aureus. Therefore, the present report has deciphered the potential of G. veruccosafor the synthesis of AgNPs and targeted the pathogenic bacteria S. aureus.

α-Amino Acids as Reducing and Capping Agents in Gold Nanoparticles Synthesis Using the Turkevich Method

Amino acid-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are a promising tool for various applications, including therapeutics and diagnostics. Most often, amino acids are used to cap AuNPs synthesized with other reducing agents. However, only a few studies have been dedicated to using α-amino acids as reducing and capping agents in AuNPs synthesis. Hence, there are still several gaps in understanding their role in reducing gold salts. Here, we used 20 proteinogenic α-amino acids and one non-proteinogenic α-amino acid in analogy to sodium citrate as reducing and capping agents in synthesizing AuNPs using the Turkevich method. Only four of the twenty-one investigated amino acids have not yielded gold nanoparticles. The shape, size distribution, stability, and optical properties of synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential centrifugal sedimentation, the phase analysis light scattering technique, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The physicochemical characteristics of synthesized AuNPs varied with the amino acid used for the reduction. We proposed that in the initial stage of gold salts reduction most of the used α-amino acids behave similarly to citrate in the Turkevich method. However, their different physicochemical properties resulting from differences in their chemical structures significantly influence the outcomes of reactions.

Ternary Metal (Cu-Ni-Zn) Oxide Nanocomposite via an Environmentally Friendly Route

In this work, we report the engineering of sub-30 nm nanocomposites of CuO/ZnO/NiO by using Dodonaea viscosa leaf extract. Zinc sulfate, nickel chloride, and copper sulfate were used as salt precursors, and isopropyl alcohol and water were used as solvents. The growth of nanocomposites was investigated by varying the concentrations of precursors and surfactants at pH 12. The as-prepared composites were characterized by XRD analysis and found to have CuO (monoclinic), ZnO (hexagonal primitive), and NiO (cubic) phases with an average size of 29 nm. FTIR analysis was performed to investigate the mode of fundamental bonding vibrations of the as-prepared nanocomposites. The vibrations of the prepared CuO/ZnO/NiO nanocomposite were detected at 760 and 628 cm^-1, respectively. The optical bandgap energy of the CuO/NiO/ZnO nanocomposite was 3.08 eV. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy was performed to calculate the band gap by the Tauc approach. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the synthesized CuO/NiO/ZnO nanocomposite were investigated. It was found that the antimicrobial activity of the synthesized nanocomposite increases with an increase in the concentration. The antioxidant activity of the synthesized nanocomposite was examined by using both ABTS and DPPH assays. The obtained results show an IC₅₀ value of 0.110 for the synthesized nanocomposite compared to DPPH and ABTS (0.512), which is smaller than that of ascorbic acid (IC₅₀ = 1.047). Such a low IC₅₀ value ensures that the antioxidant potential of the nanocomposite is higher than that of ascorbic acid, which in turn shows their excellent antioxidant activity against both DPPH and ABTS.

Green Biosynthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Using Pluchea indica Leaf Extract: Antimicrobial and Photocatalytic Activities

Nanotechnology is playing a critical role in several essential technologies with nanoscale structures (nanoparticles) in areas of the environment and biomedicine. In this work, the leaf extract of Pluchea indica was utilized to biosynthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) for the first time and evaluated for antimicrobial and photocatalytic activities. Different experimental methods were used to characterize the biosynthesized ZnONPs. The biosynthesized ZnONPs showed maximum Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) absorbance at a wavelength of 360 nm. The X-Ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the ZnONPs exhibits seven strong reflection peaks, and the average particle size was 21.9 nm. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrum analysis reveals the presence of functional groups that help in biofabrication. The existence of Zn and O was confirmed by the Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum and the morphology by SEM images. Antimicrobial studies showed that the biosynthesized ZnONPs have antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans where inhibition zones at concentration 1000 µg/mL were 21.83 ± 0.76, 13.0 ± 1.1, 14.9 ± 0.85, 24.26 ± 1.1, 17.0 ± 1.0, 20.67 ± 0.57 and 19.0 ± 1.0 mm respectively. Under both dark and sunlight irradiation, the photocatalytic activity of ZnONPs was evaluated towards the degradation of the thiazine dye (methylene blue-MB). Approximately 95% of the MB dye was broken down at pH 8 after 150 min of sunlight exposure. The aforementioned results, therefore, suggest that ZnONPs synthesized by implementing environmentally friendly techniques can be employed for a variety of environmental and biomedical applications.

Updates on Biogenic Metallic and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Therapy, Drug Delivery and Cytotoxicity

The ambition to combat the issues affecting the environment and human health triggers the development of biosynthesis that incorporates the production of natural compounds by living organisms via eco-friendly nano assembly. Biosynthesized nanoparticles (NPs) have various pharmaceutical applications, such as tumoricidal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobials, antiviral, etc. When combined, bio-nanotechnology and drug delivery give rise to the development of various pharmaceutics with site-specific biomedical applications. In this review, we have attempted to summarize in brief the types of renewable biological systems used for the biosynthesis of metallic and metal oxide NPs and the vital contribution of biogenic NPs as pharmaceutics and drug carriers simultaneously. The biosystem used for nano assembly further affects the morphology, size, shape, and structure of the produced nanomaterial. The toxicity of the biogenic NPs, because of their pharmacokinetic behavior in vitro and in vivo, is also discussed, together with some recent achievements towards enhanced biocompatibility, bioavailability, and reduced side effects. Because of the large biodiversity, the potential biomedical application of metal NPs produced via natural extracts in biogenic nanomedicine is yet to be explored.
