Abstract
Transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) ion channels play a crucial role in various cellular functions by regulating intracellular Ca2+ levels and have been extensively studied in the context of several metabolic diseases. However, the regulatory effects of TRPV3 in obesity and lipolysis are not well understood. In this study, utilizing a TRPV3 gain-of-function mouse model (TRPV3G568V/G568V), we assessed the metabolic phenotype of both TRPV3G568V/G568V mice and their control littermates, which were randomly assigned to either a 12-week high-fat diet or a control diet. We investigated the potential mechanisms underlying the role of TRPV3 in restraining obesity and promoting lipolysis both in vivo and in vitro. Our findings indicate that a high-fat diet led to significant obesity, characterized by increased epididymal and inguinal white adipose tissue weight and higher fat mass. However, the gain-of-function mutation in TRPV3 appeared to counteract these adverse effects by enhancing lipolysis in visceral fat through the upregulation of the major lipolytic enzyme, adipocyte triglyceride lipase (ATGL). In vitro experiments using carvacrol, a TRPV3 agonist, demonstrated the promotion of lipolysis and antioxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes after TRPV3 activation. Notably, carvacrol failed to stimulate Ca2+ influx, lipolysis, and antioxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes treated with BAPTA-AM, a cell-permeable calcium chelator. Our results revealed that TRPV3 activation induced the action of transcriptional factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), resulting in increased expression of ferroptosis suppressor protein 1 (FSP1) and superoxide dismutase2 (SOD2). Moreover, the inhibition of NRF2 impeded carvacrol-induced lipolysis and antioxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, with downregulation of ATGL, FSP1, and SOD2. In summary, our study suggests that TRPV3 promotes visceral fat lipolysis and inhibits diet-induced obesity through the activation of the NRF2/FSP1 signaling axis. We propose that TRPV3 may be a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of obesity.

Abstract
This study used hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) treatment to overexpress the gene of nitric oxide synthase (nos) in Staphylococcus vitulinus, which was then inoculated into fermented sausages to observe its effect on colour development. The results showed that a low concentration of H2O2 (50 mM) could up-regulate the expression of nos by increasing the oxidative stress level of S. vitulinus. At 2 h after treatment, the expression of nos in S. vitulinus was the highest (P < 0.05), and the relative enzyme activity was increased to about 1.5 times that of the untreated. The growth of S. vitulinus was not substantially affected by 50-mM H2O2 treatment (P > 0.05). When H2O2-treated S. vitulinus was inoculated into fermented sausages, the content of nitrosomyoglobin was increased, and the a*-value (indicating redness) was not significantly different from that in the group treated with nitrite (P > 0.05). This study provides a potential method to enhance the ability of S. vitulinus for colourising fermented sausage by inducing the overexpression of nos.

Abstract
High fat diet (HFD) consumption can cause dysregulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, coupled with increased ectopic lipid deposition in renal tissue leading to steatosis and dysfunction. Sitagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor clinically used for type II diabetes therapy; however its effect on renal steatosis in obese state is still uncertain. Herein, obesity was induced by feeding male Wistar rats HFD for 18 weeks, thereafter received either drug vehicle, or sitagliptin (10 mg/kg, PO) along with HFD for further 6 weeks and compared with age-matched rats receiving normal chow diet (NCD). After 24 weeks, serum and kidneys were collected for histological and biochemical assessments. Compared to NCD-fed group, HFD-fed rats displayed marked weight gain, increased fat mass, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, impaired kidney functions and renal histological alterations. Sitagliptin effectively ameliorated obesity and related metabolic perturbations and improved kidney architecture and function. There were increased levels of triglycerides and cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) in kidneys of obese rats, that were lowered by sitagliptin therapy. Sitagliptin significantly repressed the expression of lipogenesis genes, while up-regulated genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and fatty acid oxidation in kidneys of HFD-fed rats. Sitagliptin was found to induce down-regulation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and apoptotic markers in kidneys of obese rats. These findings together may emphasize a novel concept that sitagliptin can be an effective therapeutic approach for halting obesity-related renal steatosis and CKD.

Abstract
The increasing incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a significant public health concern, prompting heightened attention to its treatment. Incretins, including glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, are intestinal peptides released after nutrient intake, known for their hypoglycemic effects in diabetes management. Recent advancements highlight the promising outcomes of GLP-1 receptor agonists in reducing CKD risk factors and improving renal outcomes. The multifaceted functions of GLP-1, such as its anti-obesity, anti-hypertensive, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-lipid, anti-inflammatory, and endothelial function protective properties, contribute to its potential as a therapeutic agent for CKD. Although experiments suggest the potential benefits of incretin in CKD, a comprehensive understanding of its specific mechanisms is still lacking. This review aims to provide a detailed examination of current evidence and potential future directions, emphasizing the promising yet evolving landscape of incretin agonists in the context of CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Yellow leaf green tea (YLGT) is a new variety of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Ktze, which has yellow leaves and the unique qualities of 'three green through three yellow'. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-obesity effect of YLGT in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and to explore the potential mechanisms by regulating the AMPK/ACC/SREBP1c signaling pathways and gut microbiota. RESULTS The results showed that YLGT aqueous extract reduced body weight, hepatic inflammation, fat accumulation and hyperlipidemia in HFD-induced C57BL/6J mice, and also accelerated energy metabolism, reduced fat synthesis and suppressed obesity by activating the AMPK/CPT-1α signaling pathway and inhibiting the FAS/ACC/SREBP-1c signaling pathway. Fecal microbiota transplantation experiment further confirmed that the alteration of gut microbiota (e.g. increasing unclassified_Muribaculaceae and decreasing Colidextribacter) might be an important cause of YLGT water extract inhibiting obesity. CONCLUSION In conclusion, YLGT has a broad application prospect in the treatment of obesity and the development of anti-obesity function beverages. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The increasing global prevalence of chronic wounds underscores the growing importance of developing effective animal models for their study. This review offers a critical evaluation of the strengths and limitations of rat models frequently employed in chronic wound research and proposes potential improvements. It explores these models in the context of key comorbidities, including diabetes, venous and arterial insufficiency, pressure-induced blood flow obstruction, and infections. Additionally, the review examines important wound factors including age, sex, smoking, and the impact of anesthetic and analgesic drugs, acknowledging their substantial effects on research outcomes. A thorough understanding of these variables is crucial for refining animal models and can provide valuable insights for future research endeavors.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder affecting premenopausal women, is associated with various metabolic consequences such as insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Insulin sensitizers, such as metformin and pioglitazone, though effective, often leads to significant gastrointestinal adverse effects or weight gain, limiting its suitability for women with PCOS. There is an urgent need for safe, effective and affordable agents. Dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, enhances glucose elimination through urine, thereby reducing body weight and improving glucose and lipid metabolism. Nevertheless, it is not currently recommended as a therapeutic option for PCOS in clinical guidelines. In this study, we systematically examined the impact of dapagliflozin on an obese PCOS mouse model, focusing on alterations in glucose metabolism, adipose tissue morphology, and plasma lipid profile. Obese PCOS was induced in mice by continuous dihydrotestosterone (DHEA) injections over 21 days and high-fat diet (HFD) feeding. PCOS mice were then orally gavaged with dapagliflozin (1 mg/kg), metformin (50 mg/kg), or vehicle daily for 8 weeks, respectively. Our results demonstrated that dapagliflozin significantly prevented body weight gain and reduced fat mass in obese PCOS mice. Meanwhile, dapagliflozin treatment improved glucose tolerance and increased insulin sensitivity compared to the control PCOS mice. Furthermore, dapagliflozin significantly improved adipocyte accumulation and morphology in white adipose tissue, resulting in a normalized plasma lipid profile in PCOS mice. In conclusion, our results suggest that dapagliflozin is an effective agent in managing glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in obese PCOS mice.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity have become public issues of global concern. Bariatric surgery for the treatment of obesity combined with type 2 DM has been shown to be a safe and effective approach; however, there are limited studies that have systematically addressed the challenges of surgical treatment of obesity combined with DM. In this review, we summarize and answer the most pressing questions in the field of surgical treatment of obesity-associated DM. I believe that our insights will be of great help to clinicians in their daily practice.

Abstract
Simply withholding a response while viewing an appetizing food, over the course of many presentations (i.e., during food go/no-go training) can modify individuals' food preferences-which could, in turn, promote healthier eating behaviors. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this food go/no-go training-induced change in food preferences are still relatively unclear. We addressed this issue in the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. To this end, we administered a novel passive viewing task before and after food go/no-go training to 91 participants in the scanner. Participants' food preferences were measured with a binary food choice task. At the behavioral level, we found the expected training effect on food preferences: Participants preferred go over no-go foods following training. At the neural level, we found that changes in food preferences were associated with training-related go vs. no-go differences in activity and functional connectivity, such as less activity in the anterior cingulate cortex and superior frontal gyrus but greater functional connectivity between the superior frontal gyrus and middle occipital gyrus. Critically, Dynamic causal modeling showed that this preference change effect was largely driven by top-down influence from the superior frontal gyrus to the middle occipital gyrus. Together, these findings suggest a neural mechanism of the food go/no-go training effect-namely, that the food-viewing-related interplay between prefrontal regions and visual regions might be related to the food preference change following food go/no-go training.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction (MI) is a life-threatening cardiovascular disease that, on average, results in 8.5 million deaths worldwide each year. Timely revascularization of occluded vessels is a critical method of myocardial salvage. However, reperfusion paradoxically leads to the worsening of myocardial damage known as myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI). Therefore, reducing the size of myocardial infarction after reperfusion is critical and remains an important therapeutic goal. The susceptibility of the myocardium to MI/RI may be increased by diabetes. Currently, some traditional antidiabetic agents such as metformin reduce MI/RI by decreasing inflammation, inhibiting oxidative stress, and improving vascular endothelial function. This appears to be a new direction for the treatment of MI/RI. Recent cardiovascular outcome trials have shown that several oral antidiabetic agents, including glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4is), and sodium-glucose-linked transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is), not only have good antidiabetic effects but also have a protective effect on myocardial protection. This article aims to discuss the mechanisms and effects of oral antidiabetic agents, including GLP-1RAs, DPP-4is, and SGLT-2is, on MI/RI to facilitate their clinical application.

Abstract
A stable isotope dilution-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method based on a derivatisation strategy involving an N,N'-carbonylimidazole solution (CDI) with 4-(dimethylamino)-benzenemethanamine was developed for the determination of 11 free fatty acids (FFAs) in human blood samples. Serum samples were subjected to liquid‒liquid extraction and centrifuged, and the supernatant was collected for a two-step derivatisation reaction with a CDI and 4-(dimethylamino)-aniline acetonitrile solution. The derivatised solution was separated on a ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 column (2.1 × 50 mm, 1.8 µm) column with a mobile phase consisting of water-acetonitrile in gradient elution and then detected by tandem mass spectrometry using electrospray ionisation (ESI) and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) in positive ion mode and quantified using the isotope internal standard method. The effects of the derivatisation reaction time, temperature and concentration of derivatisation reagents on the response values of the analytes were investigated. The optimal conditions were as follows: 1.0 mg mL-1 CDI acetonitrile solution at 25 °C for 25 min, followed by a reaction with a 1.0 mg mL-1 4-(dimethylamino)-benzenemethanamine acetonitrile solution at 70 °C for 30 min. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) of the 11 FFAs were in the range of 3.0-14.0 ng mL-1; the limits of quantification (LOQs) were in the range of 8.0-45.0 ng mL-1; and the mean recoveries ranged from 83.4 to 112.8%, with intraday and interday precisions ranging from 0.7 to 9.1% and 3.7-9.5%, respectively. The experimental method is simple in terms of the pretreatment operation, accurate and reliable, and can be applied to the sensitive determination of FFAs in human blood samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The characterization and prognostic value of body composition parameter/phenotype based on computed tomography (CT) in patients with digestive tract cancers remain incomplete. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parameter/phenotype and clinical outcomes in patients with digestive tract cancers. METHODS In this prospective cohort study, 8267 patients with digestive tract cancers were assessed using CT scans to determine body composition. Body composition data, including areas of skeletal muscle (SM), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT), were collected at the third lumbar level on CT images obtained within 30 days before surgery. Body composition phenotypes (sarcopenia, cancer cachexia, sarcopenic obesity) were determined based on SM, SAT, and VAT areas. The primary endpoint was overall survival, obtained from electronic medical records and telephone follow-up surveys. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank analyses were employed to compare unadjusted survival, while multivariate survival analyses were conducted using a proportional hazards model adjusted for age, gender, and cancer-node-metastasis (TNM) stages. RESULTS Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality were calculated for the second (Q2), third (Q3), and fourth (Q4) quantiles relative to the first quantile (Q1) for SM areas, revealing adjusted summary HRs of 0.575 (95% CI, 0.361-0.916), 0.419 (95% CI, 0.241-0.729), and 0.384 (95% CI, 0.203-0.726), respectively. Sarcopenia-adjusted summary HRs were 1.795 (95% CI: 1.012-3.181) for male patients and 1.925 (95% CI: 1.065-3.478) for female patients. Cancer cachexia-adjusted summary HRs were 1.542 (95% CI: 1.023-2.324) for male patients and 1.569 (95% CI: 0.820-3.001) for female patients. Sarcopenic obesity-adjusted summary HRs were 1.122 (95% CI: 0.759-1.657) for male patients and 1.303 (95% CI: 0.623-2.725) for female patients. Subgroup analyses indicated varying prognostic values of body composition parameter/phenotype among different cancer types. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest a large SM area is a favorable prognostic indicator, while cancer cachexia and sarcopenia signify poor prognosis in patients with digestive tract cancers. These findings have important implications for the personalized preoperative assessment of body composition in patients with digestive tract cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Reproductive risk factors are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women. However, the combined effects of the composite reproductive risk factors on CVD are unknown. This study was performed to construct a reproductive risk score (RRS) to measure reproductive status, examine the association between RRS and CVD, and explore the modification effect of healthy lifestyle on the association in women in the UK Biobank cohort. METHODS The RRS was constructed in 74,141 female participants with data about the items derived for the RRS in the UK Biobank. The RRS was derived from 17 baseline variables, all of which indicated women's reproductive health status. We defined four categories of RRS status: low-risk group (score 0-1); low-intermediate group (score 2-3); high-intermediate group (score 4-5); and high-risk group (score 6-13). We also constructed a healthy lifestyle score (HLS) with five related factors, and categorized into unhealthy lifestyle group (score: 0-1), intermediate lifestyle group (score: 2-3) and healthy lifestyle group (score: 4-5). RESULTS Each point increase in the RRS was associated with a 22 % higher risk of CVD (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 1.22; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.16 to 1.28), 23 % higher risk of IHD (1.23; 1.17 to 1.31) and 19 % higher risk of stroke (1.19; 1.07 to 1.32). The percentage population-attribution risks (PAR%) were 16 % (95 % CI: 8 to 24) for CVD, 15 % (95 % CI: 6 to 24) for IHD and 18 % (95 % CI: 1 to 33) for stroke. A healthy lifestyle significantly attenuated RRS associations with the incidence of CVD and IHD. The attributable proportions due to additive interaction (p < 0.001) between RRS and HLS were 0.14 (95 % CI: 0.07 to 0.22) for CVD and 0.15 (95 % CI: 0.09 to 0.23) for IHD, respectively. CONCLUSIONS High RRS was associated with increased risks of CVD, IHD and stroke in female participants in the UK Biobank. The early-stage identification of women with reproductive risk using synthesised indicators and appropriate healthy lifestyle interventions could be useful for the prevention of early CVD and the extension of healthy active life expectancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity (PA) and the development of relational empathy skills in children, taking into account weight status. METHODS Parents/guardians of primary school children were involved in filling out a questionnaire: the Empathy Questionnaire (EmQue-I13) and children were asked to complete the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C) to investigate the self-reported PA levels. The weight status was assessed using a self-reported Body Mass Index (BMI). RESULTS Three hundred seventy parents or guardians of students who attended primary school (8.53±1.61 yrs) were recruited. The total score was 2.41±0.89 for PAQ-C and 41.17±6.32 for EmQue-I13. The three domains of EmQue-I13 were: contagion (8.16±2.67), attention to others' feelings (19.40±2.99) and prosocial actions (13.62±3.01). Linear regression models showed that a higher PAQ-C score was positively associated with empathy-related total score P<0.000. Weight status, age and gender were not associated with EmQue-I13. CONCLUSIONS Our results underline the positive association between physical activity and the development of relational empathic skills.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of cognitive impairment worldwide. Overweight and obesity are strongly associated with comorbidities, such as hypertension, diabetes, and insulin resistance (IR), which contribute substantially to the development of AD and subsequent morbidity and mortality. Adipose tissue (AT) is a highly dynamic organ composed of a diverse array of cell types, which can be classified based on their anatomic localization or cellular composition. The expansion and remodeling of AT in the context of obesity involves immunometabolic and functional shifts steered by the intertwined actions of multiple immune cells and cytokine signaling within AT, which contribute to the development of metabolic disorders, IR, and systemic markers of chronic low-grade inflammation. Chronic low-grade inflammation, a prolonged, low-dose stimulation by specific immunogens that can progress from localized sites and affect multiple organs throughout the body, leads to neurodystrophy, increased apoptosis, and disruption of homeostasis, manifesting as brain atrophy and AD-related pathology. In this review, we sought to elucidate the mechanisms by which AT contributes to the onset and progression of AD in obesity through the mediation of chronic low-grade inflammation, particularly focusing on the roles of adipokines and AT-resident immune cells.

Abstract
Obesity has become a global health concern in recent decades. Utilizing biomarkers presents a promising approach to comprehensively monitor the progress of obesity and its associated health conditions. This review aims to synthesize the available evidence on the correlation between cfDNA level and obesity and to provide insights into the applicability of using cfDNA level as a tool for monitoring progression of obesity. Searches were performed in PubMed and Embase on April 1, 2022. Data and other relevant information were extracted and compiled into a structured table for further analysis. Among 1170 articles screened, 11 articles were included in this review and assessed qualitatively. The results demonstrated that existing evidence mainly focused on three populations, including healthy individuals, cancer patients and pregnant women. Majority of the studies on healthy individuals identified a significant association between cfDNA level and body weight status but not among cancer patients. Varying results were observed among pregnant women at different gestational trimesters. Our review summarized some preliminary evidence on the association between cfDNA level and obesity. More cohort studies in larger scale with comprehensive assessment have to be conducted to examine the applicability of cfDNA as a biomarker for severity and disease progression of obesity.

Abstract
Obesity is among the most common chronic disorders, worldwide. It is a complex disease that reflects the interactions between environmental influences, multiple genetic allelic variants, and behavioral factors. Recent developments have also shown that biological conditions in utero play an important role in the programming of energy homeostasis systems and might have an impact on obesity and metabolic disease risk. The corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) family of neuropeptides, as a central element of energy homeostasis, has been evaluated for its role in the pathophysiology of obesity. This review aims to summarize the relevance and effects of the CRH family of peptides in the pathophysiology of obesity spanning from fetal life to adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite several international initiatives aimed to contrast childhood overweight and obesity, these still represent a major public health problem. Recently, the World Health Organization called for a new type of preventive action, requiring stakeholders from both governments and civil society, to play a decisive role in shaping healthy environments, especially for children. METHODS COcONUT (Children PrOmOting Nutrition throUgh Theatre) was a nutrition education project, involving children aged 5-12 years, aimed to raise awareness on healthy eating, through theatrical and practical workshops. Within this project we conducted an observational study assessing: 1) children adherence to the Mediterranean diet, using the KIDMED questionnaire; 2) parental nutritional knowledge and families' food habits using the ZOOM8 questionnaire. The non-parametric Wilcoxon and the McNemar's Test were used. Statistical significance was fixed P<0.05. RESULTS Our data show a statistically significant improvement in Mediterranean Diet adherence among children (P=0.0004). Moreover, we found positive trends in some families' food habits, as for instance less perceived barriers in fruits/vegetables/pulses consumption, less perceived barriers in doing sports and less consumption of unhealthy snacks. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm the important role played by funny and active learning in health promotion initiatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS This study aimed to assess the associations between serum iron concentration, C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration and the risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in the general population and to explore potential mediating and moderating effects. METHODS AND RESULTS This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey spanning the years 1999-2010, encompassing 23,634 participants. Cox proportional hazards regression models were employed to investigate the independent associations of serum iron and CRP with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Moderation and mediation analyses explored the moderating effect of CRP on the association between the serum iron concentration and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, and the mediating role of the serum iron concentration in the association between the CRP concentration and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. After multivariate adjustments in the Cox model, serum iron and CRP levels were independently correlated with both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk. Moderation analyses revealed a more pronounced correlation between the serum iron concentration and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in participants with higher CRP levels. Mediation analysis indicated that the serum iron concentration partly mediated the impact of CRP on the risk of all-cause mortality (13.79%) and cardiovascular mortality (24.12%). CONCLUSION Serum iron and CRP are independently associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Moreover, the associations between serum iron concentrations and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality are more pronounced in individuals with elevated CRP. Serum iron partially mediates the effect of CRP on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Pediatric obesity is a growing concern globally. Patients with a history of overweight/obesity often experience stigmatization, especially in the healthcare setting, and are at increased risk of developing psychological comorbidities including eating disorders. This review appraises the most recent studies evaluating eating disorder risk in youth undergoing treatment for obesity, identifies gaps in the literature, and offers practical guidelines to pediatric providers regarding the management of this population. RECENT FINDINGS Recent studies suggest that structured weight management programs may decrease the risk of and/or improve symptoms of certain eating disorders such as binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa. There is a paucity of research on some components of obesity management such as obesity pharmacotherapeutics and eating disorder risk. SUMMARY Children and adolescents with obesity are a psychologically vulnerable population with increased risk for the development of eating disorders. Further study is needed to evaluate general risk in the setting of specialized and primary care obesity interventions and develop appropriate screening and mitigation tools. Some evidence-based strategies can aid pediatric providers in both weight management and eating disorder prevention and risk assessment.

Abstract
Bone functional adaptation is routinely invoked to interpret skeletal morphology despite ongoing debate regarding the limits of the bone response to mechanical stimuli. The wide variation in human body mass presents an opportunity to explore the relationship between mechanical load and skeletal response in weight-bearing elements. Here, we examine variation in femoral macroscopic morphology as a function of body mass index (BMI), which is used as a metric of load history. A sample of 80 femora (40 female; 40 male) from recent modern humans was selected from the Texas State University Donated Skeletal Collection. Femora were imaged using x-ray computed tomography (voxel size ~0.5 mm), and segmented to produce surface models. Landmark-based geometric morphometric analyses based on the Coherent Point Drift algorithm were conducted to quantify shape. Principal components analyses were used to summarize shape variation, and component scores were regressed on BMI. Within the male sample, increased BMI was associated with a mediolaterally expanded femoral shaft, as well as increased neck-shaft angle and decreased femoral neck anteversion angle. No statistically significant relationships between shape and BMI were found in the female sample. While mechanical stimulus has traditionally been applied to changes in long bong diaphyseal shape it appears that bone functional adaptation may also result in fundamental changes in the shape of skeletal elements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to: 1) test for the link between snack choices and BMI using a novel sensory-based classification method; and 2) elucidate the role of gustatory sensitivity in orienting snack choices. METHODS The study employed a dual approach involving sensory and nutritional assessments. Ninety-eight European male individuals were tested for gustatory sensitivities to sweetness, saltiness, umami, and lipid perception. Participant food intake was measured over 4 days. A separate cohort of 327 participants categorized the recorded snacks based on taste patterns, enabling profiling of snack choices across body-weight groups. RESULTS Results showed clear differentiations in snack choices across the BMI groups: Individuals with a higher BMI consumed more "Sweet" and "Sweet+Fat" snacks and less "Savory" snacks compared with the lower-BMI group (p < 0.05). Mediation analyses confirmed a significant effect of gustatory sensitivity, showing that the greater choice for "Sweet" and "Sweet+Fat" snacks among those with a higher BMI was mediated by sensitivities to sweetness and lipid perception (p = 0.008-0.044). CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed that gustatory sensitivity can mediate the relationship between BMI and energy consumption from different snacks. These findings highlight the significance of taste perception in shaping snack choice, suggesting potential strategies for interventions aimed at addressing gustatory sensitivity to promote healthier dietary preferences.

Abstract
PURPOSE Gestational weight gain (GWG) is an important contributor to pregnancy outcomes in the general obstetric population and different subgroups. The corresponding information in women with thyroid conditions is limited. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between GWG according to institute of medicine (IOM) and pregnancy outcomes in women with thyroid disorders. METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis of 620 pregnant women either treated with levothyroxine (N = 545) or attended because of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy (N = 75). RESULTS The associations between GWG according to IOM and pregnancy outcomes were present both in women treated with thyroid hormone and women followed by hyperthyroidism, most of them related to the fetal outcomes. In women treated with levothyroxine, insufficient GWG was associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) (odds ratio (OR) 2.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18, 4.54), preterm birth (OR 2.31, 95% CI 1.22, 4.36), small-for-gestational age newborns (OR 2.38, 95% CI 1.09, 5.22) and respiratory distress (OR 6.89, 95% CI 1.46, 32.52). Excessive GWG was associated with cesarean delivery (OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.10, 2.51) and macrosomia (OR 2.75, 95% CI 1.38, 5.49). Large-for-gestational age newborns were associated with both insufficient GWG (OR 0.25, 95% CI 0.11, 0.58) and excessive GWG (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.11, 2.92). In women followed by hyperthyroidism, excessive GWG was associated with large-for-gestational age newborns (OR 5.56, 95% CI 1.03, 29.96). CONCLUSION GWG according to IOM is associated with pregnancy outcomes both in women treated with thyroid hormone and women followed by hyperthyroidism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Excess gestational weight gain (GWG) is a risk factor for various unfavorable maternal and neonatal outcomes that may be preventable. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while pregnant can help prevent uncontrollable weight gain. The aim of this study was to assess pregnant women's knowledge on weight, GWG, diet, and knowledge of obesity-related complications among women who seek care at our semi-urban, regional setting. METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted at the prenatal clinic at Kalafong Academic Hospital. Prospective participants completed a questionnaire on their perception of GWG, attitudes toward GWG, knowledge of GWG, associated complications of obesity, and food choices. Data analysis was performed using SAS version 9.4. RESULTS The majority of the 500 individuals were overweight or obese prior to pregnancy. By the end of the third trimester, this increased by 10.1% (n = 420; 86.1%). Nearly half (n = 240; 48.78%) of the overweight and obese women underestimated their weight. Only 26.53% (n = 26) of women who checked their body mass index (BMI, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) gained weight according to recommendations. However, less than half (n = 96; 30.5%) gained weight within the recommended range, despite the fact that the majority of them (n = 315; 64%) were aware of the harmful effects of obesity on the cardiovascular system and the effects of high calories on weight gain (n = 321; 65%). CONCLUSION Despite basic knowledge of the impact of high-caloric intake on weight gain and cardiovascular complications, less than half of the study population gained weight within the recommended range.

Abstract
Myosteatosis is highly prevalent in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and could reciprocally impact liver function. Decreasing muscle fat could be indirectly hepatoprotective in MASLD. We conducted a review to identify interventions reducing myosteatosis and their impact on liver function. Non-pharmacological interventions included diet (caloric restriction or lipid enrichment), bariatric surgery and physical activity. Caloric restriction in humans achieving a mean weight loss of 3% only reduces muscle fat. Lipid-enriched diet increases liver fat in human with no impact on muscle fat, except sphingomyelin-enriched diet which reduces both lipid contents exclusively in pre-clinical studies. Bariatric surgery, hybrid training (resistance exercise and electric stimulation) or whole-body vibration in human decrease both liver and muscle fat. Physical activity impacts both phenotypes by reducing local and systemic inflammation, enhancing insulin sensitivity and modulating the expression of key mediators of the muscle-liver-adipose tissue axis. The combination of diet and physical activity acts synergistically in liver, muscle and white adipose tissue, and further decrease muscle and liver fat. Several pharmacological interventions (patchouli alcohol, KBP-089, 2,4-dinitrophenol methyl ether, adipoRon and atglistatin) and food supplementation (vitamin D or resveratrol) improve liver and muscle phenotypes in pre-clinical studies by increasing fatty acid oxidation and anti-inflammatory properties. These interventions are effective in reducing myosteatosis in MASLD while addressing the liver disease itself. This review supports that disturbances in inter-organ crosstalk are key pathophysiological mechanisms involved in MASLD and myosteatosis pathogenesis. Focusing on the skeletal muscle might offer new therapeutic strategies to treat MASLD by modulating the interactions between liver and muscles.

Abstract
Sleep may influence appetite regulation through physiological and neurocognitive pathways. However, the association between sleep and appetite in childhood has been scarcely reported, particularly using a prospective design. We aimed to test associations between sleep duration at 7 years of age (y) and appetitive traits at both 7 and 10 y. Participants are from the population-based birth cohort Generation XXI (Porto, Portugal), at 7 (n = 2437) and 10 y (n = 1938) follow-ups. Data on sleep was gathered at 7 y and, considering bedtime and get-up time, total mean sleep duration was calculated and further categorized according to the 10th and 90th percentiles. Appetitive traits were assessed at 7 and 10 y using the parent-reported Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. Associations were tested through Generalized Linear Models (co-variates: child's sex; maternal age, education and pre-pregnancy body mass index at 7 y). At 10 y, associations were further adjusted for the respective appetitive trait at 7 y. Children slept a mean of 10.2 h/night, and 13% and 9% slept ≤9.5 and ≥ 11.0 h/night at 7 y, respectively. For each additional hour in sleep duration, children scored 0.078 (99%CI: -0.145; -0.011) lower on Food Responsiveness, 0.065 (99%CI: -0.129; -0.002) lower on Emotional Undereating and 0.096 (99%CI: -0.161; -0.032) lower on Food Fussiness. Lastly, children sleeping ≤9.5 h/night scored higher on Food Responsiveness (β = 0.145 99%CI: 0.020; 0.271); while those sleeping ≥11.0 h/night scored lower on Food Fussiness (β = -0.255 99%CI: -0.370; -0.079). No significant prospective associations were found. In conclusion, in 7 y children, sleep duration was cross-sectionally associated with lower scores on food approach (Food Responsiveness) and avoidant traits (Emotional Undereating and Food Fussiness). However, the magnitude of the associations was small and further studies are warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Adolescents with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) are at significantly greater risk for disordered eating behaviors compared to their peers without T1D. Given that this is a dangerous and potentially lethal combination, this review aims to support pediatric medical providers in increasing competence in identification, assessment, and prevention of disordered eating behaviors in adolescents with T1D. RECENT FINDINGS This review provides an up-to-date synthesis of unique risk factors for disordered eating behaviors in adolescents with T1D, including the daily diabetes management tasks, effects of insulin on weight and hunger, family conflict, and reinforcement from their environment for disordered behaviors. This review recommends two brief screening tools, the Diabetes Eating Problems Survey-Revised (DEPS-R) and Modified SCOFF (mSCOFF), to be used in busy practices; it also provides practical strategies for providersto use with patients in the form of effective, nonjudgmental language. SUMMARY A clear understanding of unique experiences impacting adolescents with T1D may increase use of evidence-based screening tools and identification of disordered eating behaviors among a high-risk population in clinic/practice. In addition, providers' intentional use of nonjudgmental and de-stigmatizing language may lead to more positive interactions for adolescents and willingness to engage in further treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide since November 2019 is of interest to understand its impact on various organs. COVID-19 patients experience a higher incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) compared with non-COVID-19 patients. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted that covered the period from November 1, 2019 to February 28, 2021. RESULTS The analysis incorporated a comprehensive review of 19 studies of 21 362 patients. The older age (mean difference [MDs] = 5.11), cardiovascular disease (CVD) (odds ratio [OR] = 1.94), male sex (OR = 1.55), chronic kidney disease (CKD) (OR = 3.82), hypertension (OR = 2.15), diabetes (OR = 1.71), cancer (OR = 1.16), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (OR = 1.40), mechanical ventilation (OR = 8.66), and vasopressor (OR = 6.30), were significantly associated with risk factor for AKI (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The analysis revealed independent risk factors for AKI.

Abstract
It is a paradox that psychotomimetic drugs can relieve symptoms that increase risk of and cooccur with psychosis, such as attention and motivational deficits (e.g., amphetamines), pain (e.g., cannabis) and symptoms of depression (e.g., psychedelics, dissociatives). We introduce the ideas of psychotomimetic compensation and psychotomimetic sensitization to explain this paradox. Psychotomimetic compensation refers to a short-term stressor or drug-induced compensation against stress that is facilitated by engagement of neurotransmitter/modulator systems (endocannabinoid, serotonergic, glutamatergic and dopaminergic) that mediate the effects of common psychotomimetic drugs. Psychotomimetic sensitization occurs after repeated exposure to stress and/or drugs and is evidenced by the gradual intensification and increase of psychotic-like experiences over time. Theoretical and practical implications of this model are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Culturally and linguistically diverse population groups disproportionately experience higher weight and other non-weight-related discrimination in healthcare settings outside of their ancestral country. Little is known about the experiences of individuals with Arab heritage. This study aimed to qualitatively explore the intersectional weight-related healthcare experiences of individuals of Arab heritage with higher weight in Australia. METHODS A general inductive enquiry approach was used. Purposive, convenience and snowball sampling was used to recruit individuals of Arab heritage residing in Australia. Individuals were invited to participate in an online semistructured interview. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed. RESULTS Fifteen participants took part in the study. Of these participants, 93% were female (n = 14), 80% were aged between 18 and 44 years (n = 12), 73% were university educated (n = 11), 53% were born outside of Australia (n = 8) and all were Muslim (n = 15). Four main themes were identified: (1) appearance-based judgement, (2) generalised advice and assumptions, (3) cultural responsiveness and (4) healthcare system constraints. CONCLUSION Individuals of Arab heritage with higher weight in Australia, namely, females, often perceive their healthcare experiences as dismissive of their cultural and religious needs and driven by causality assumptions around weight. It is crucial that care delivered encompasses cultural humility, is weight-inclusive and acknowledges systemic constraints. Cultural safety training benchmarks, healthcare management reform and weight-inclusive healthcare approaches are recommended to assist healthcare providers in delivering effective, holistic and culturally safe care. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Insights gained from conversations with Arab heritage community members with lived experiences regarding weight-related healthcare encounters informed the study design and approach.

Abstract
Introduction We examined the psychological burden associated with metabolic syndrome (MetSyn). Methods We used comparable longitudinal data of older adults (≥50 years) from the UK (English Longitudinal Study of Aging) and the US (Health and Retirement Study). We defined MetSyn based on biomarker assessments (e.g., blood pressure, impaired glycemic control). Using regression models, we tested a range of individual psychological outcomes (e.g., depressive symptoms) associated with MetSyn. We also examined whether these psychological outcomes may explain or moderate the link between MetSyn and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Findings MetSyn was associated cross-sectionally with a range of psychological outcomes, including depression, anxiety, loneliness, hopelessness, cynical hostility, social strain, negative affect and decreased positive affect, social support and purpose in life. There was no convincing evidence that psychological factors interacted with or explained (mediated) the relationship between MetSyn and increased risk of developing NCD over 10-year follow-ups. Conclusions MetSyn and the psychological burden outcomes examined may have independent effects on NCD risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the impact of bariatric surgery on the pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters of orally administered medications and supplements. METHODS Systematic searches of bibliographic databases were conducted to identify studies. Pooled effect estimates from different surgical procedures were calculated using a random-effects model. RESULTS Quantitative data were synthesized from 58 studies including a total of 1985 participants. Whilst 40 medications and 6 supplements were evaluated across these studies, heterogeneity and missing information reduced the scope of the meta-analysis to the following medications and supplements: atorvastatin, paracetamol, omeprazole, midazolam, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, and iron supplements. There were no significant differences in PK parameters post-surgery for the drugs atorvastatin and omeprazole, and supplements calcium, ferritin, and zinc supplements. Paracetamol showed reduced clearance (mean difference [MD] = -15.56 L/hr, p = 0.0002, I2 = 67%), increased maximal concentration (MD = 6.90 μg/ml, p = 0.006, I2 = 92%) and increased terminal elimination half-life (MD = 0.49 hr, p < 0.0001, I2 = 3%) post-surgery. The remaining 36 medications and 2 supplements were included in a systematic review. Overall, 18 of the 53 drugs and supplements showed post-operative changes in PK parameters. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates heterogeneity in practice and could not reach conclusive findings for most PK parameters. Prospective studies are needed to inform best practice and enhance patient healthcare and safety following bariatric surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whilst single chemical exposures are suspected to be obesogenic, the combined role of chemical mixtures in paediatric obesity is not well understood. OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate the potential associations between chemical mixtures and obesity in a population-based sample of Canadian children. METHODS We ascertained biomonitoring and health data for children aged 3-11 from the cross-sectional Canadian Health Measures Survey from 2007 to 2019. Several chemicals of interest were measured in blood or urine and paediatric obesity was defined based on measured anthropometrics. Using quantile-based G computational analysis, we quantified the effects of three chemical mixtures selected a priori. Models were adjusted for sociodemographic and environmental factors identified through a directed acyclic graph. Results are presented through adjusted relative risks (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). RESULTS We included 9147 children. Of these, 24.1% were overweight or obese. Exposure to the mixture of bisphenol A, acrylamide, glycidamide, metals, parabens and arsenic increased the risk of childhood overweight or obesity by 45% (95% CI 1.09, 1.93), obesity by 109% (95% CI 1.27, 3.42) and central obesity by 82% (95% CI 1.30, 2.56). CONCLUSIONS Our findings support the role of early childhood chemical exposures in paediatric obesity and the potential combined effects of chemicals.

Abstract
Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are widespread, non-communicable diseases that are responsible for considerable levels of morbidity and mortality globally, primarily in the form of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Changes to lifestyle and behaviour have insufficient long-term efficacy in most patients with these diseases; metabolic surgery, although effective, is not practically deliverable on the scale that is required. Over the past two decades, therapies based on incretin hormones, spearheaded by glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) receptor agonists (GLP1RAs), have become the treatment of choice for obesity and T2DM, and clinical evidence now suggests that these agents have benefits for CVD. We review the latest advances in incretin-based pharmacotherapy. These include 'GLP1 plus' agents, which combine the known advantages of GLP1RAs with the activity of additional hormones, such as glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide, glucagon and amylin, to achieve desired therapeutic goals. Second-generation non-peptidic oral GLP1RAs promise to extend the benefits of GLP1 therapy to those who do not want, or cannot have, subcutaneous injection therapy. We conclude with a discussion of the knowledge gaps that must be addressed before incretin-based therapies can be properly deployed for maximum benefit in the treatment of obesity and T2DM.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) typically affects women of childbearing age, is associated with recent weight gain, and can result in debilitating headache as well as papilledema that can cause vision loss. There have been advances in the medical and surgical treatment of affected patients with IIH that can improve outcomes and tolerability of therapy. RECENT FINDINGS Medical treatment with agents that lower intracranial pressure through pathways other than carbonic anhydrase inhibition are being developed, and medically-directed weight loss as well as bariatric surgery now may be considered as primary therapy. New surgical options including venous sinus stenting have shown efficacy even with cases of severe vision loss. Our treatment options for IIH patients are becoming more diverse, and individualized treatment decisions are now possible to address specific components of the patient's disease manifestations and to lead to IIH remission.

Abstract
Alternansucrase, a glucosyltransferase, is currently used to produce slowly digestible alternan oligosaccharides or maltooligosaccharides from sucrose. These oligosaccharides are popular for food fortification to lower postprandial glucose levels. This study aimed to explore the enzymatic reaction of alternansucrase in simulated in vitro gastric reaction conditions. Under the studied conditions, SucroSEB (a model enzyme for alternansucrase) hydrolyzed the sucrose and transglycosylated the glucose to produce glucans, both in the absence and presence of acceptors. The preference of the acceptor was maltose˃ raffinose˃ lactose. The rate of sucrose hydrolysis was significantly higher in the presence of maltose (p = 0.024). The glucans formed during the reaction included oligomers (DP 3-10) and polymers (DP ≥ 11), both of which increased over time. These glucans contained α-1,3 and α-1,6 glycosidic linkages, confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR. They were slowly and partially digestible in the presence of rat intestinal extract in contrast to the complete and rapid digestion of starch. The glucans formed after a longer gastric reaction time exhibited higher dietary fiber potential (19.145 ± 4.77 %; 60 min) compared to those formed during the initial phase (2.765 ± 0.19 %; 15 min). Overall, this study demonstrated the efficacy of SucroSEB in converting sucrose to slowly and partially digestible glucans under simulated in vitro gastric conditions.

Abstract
This systematic review aimed to assess the impact of Bifidobacterium genus probiotics on body weight and body composition parameters in overweight and obese individuals. A systematic search for randomized controlled trials was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases until April 17, 2023. The inclusion criteria required the trials to involve Bifidobacterium genus probiotics interventions and the evaluation of obesity-related anthropometric and body composition outcomes in overweight or obese subjects. Studies were excluded when involving obese individuals with genetic syndromes or pregnant women, as well as probiotic mixture interventions. The revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials was utilized to assess the quality of the included studies. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed using the mean difference between endpoint measurements and change from baseline for body mass index, body weight, body fat mass, body fat percentage, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and visceral fat area. From 1,527 retrieved reports, 11 studies (911 subjects) were included in this review. Bifidobacterium probiotics administration resulted in significant reductions in body fat mass (MD = -0.64 kg, 95% CI: -1.09, -0.18, p = 0.006), body fat percentage (MD = -0.64%, 95% CI: -1.18, -0.11, p = 0.02), waist circumference (MD = -1.39 cm, 95% CI: -1.99, -0.79, p < 0.00001), and visceral fat area (MD = -4.38 cm2, 95% CI: -7.24, -1.52, p = 0.003). No significant differences were observed for body mass index, body weight, or waist-to-hip ratio. This systematic review suggests that Bifidobacterium genus probiotics may contribute to managing overweight and obesity by reducing body fat mass, body fat percentage, waist circumference, and visceral fat area. Further research is required to understand strain and species interactions, optimal dosages, and effective delivery methods for probiotics in obesity management. Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical Activity 4 Everyone (PA4E1) is a whole-school physical activity program, with demonstrated efficacy (2012-2014). PA4E1 was adapted (scaled-up) and tested in a scale-up trial (2017-2020). This process evaluation study of the scale-up trial had 2 aims. First, to describe the acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of PA4E1 in the scale-up trial, from the perspective of school staff involved in the program management and delivery. Second, to generate themes that may explain school staff assessments of acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility. METHODS Data were collected at various time points throughout the 2-year implementation phase. Online surveys were collected from In-School Champions, Head Physical Education teachers, Principals, and Physical Education teachers (quantitative data). Focus groups and interviews were conducted with In-School Champions, Principals, and Physical Education teachers (qualitative data). Existing published data on website engagement, adaptations, modifications, and the scale-up trial primary outcome (implementation of physical activity practices) were triangulated with the quantitative and qualitative during analysis, to generate themes. RESULTS School staff delivering PA4E1 reported it was highly acceptable, appropriate, and feasible. Seven themes were generated relating to acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility. The themes related to how the program was funded, the delivery modes of implementation support, the identification of easy-wins, the recruitment of the right in-school champion, facilitating principal buy-in, mitigating the impact of school staff turnover, and engaging the whole school. CONCLUSIONS Recommendations are made to inform future adaptations for PA4E1 and potentially school-based physical activity programs more generally. The findings may inform future scalability assessments of the suitability of programs for scale-up.

Abstract
Introduction Dietary guidelines worldwide emphasize the importance of consuming vegetables as part of a healthy diet. Despite this, translating this information into messages for consumers that change behavior has been difficult. There have been population-level social marketing campaigns as well as several smaller campaigns directed specifically toward children, which have demonstrated small increases in consumption. However, achieving meaningful and sustained increases in children's vegetable consumption remains a challenge. This article describes the process of synthesizing the published literature and translating these findings to inform the development of 7 best practice guidelines to increase children's vegetable intake. Methods The first step in this process was a systematic review of scientific literature to identify the components of interventions that were associated with successfully increasing vegetable intake. The synthesis of effective intervention components was guided by the Behavior Change Wheel. These scientific findings were translated to guidelines for best practice. This process involved a team of nutrition and behavioral researchers and nutrition practitioners translating the science into actionable advice that could be adopted by a range of stakeholders. The 6 selected stakeholders included long daycare centers, after-hours school care providers, primary schools, industry groups and growers, researchers, and government policy makers. Stakeholders were involved in the development process through surveys and interviews to understand their requirements for resources to support adoption of the best practice guidelines within each setting and within the context of existing practice. Results The guidelines center on coordination of effort, with a focus on components such as planning, environmental restructuring, barrier reduction, feedback, and monitoring. In consultation with key stakeholders, a range of resources were developed for each setting to support the implementation of best practice, with the aim of achieving meaningful increases in intake. The resources and tools have been made available at http://www.vegkit.com.au. Conclusions The translation of knowledge into practice is not traditionally included as part of the research process. Therefore, combining the process of reviewing the science and translating the evidence to stakeholder resources to influence practice in 1 research study is novel, and the study could be used to guide future research translation activities within and beyond the field of public health nutrition.

Abstract
Eating behaviour that does not centralise weight, otherwise known as weight-neutral, is associated with improved physical and psychological health, and greater health promoting behaviours. However, consolidated evidence is lacking. This study aimed to systematically evaluate 'health-centric' eating behaviour reflective of weight-neutral approaches, and their relationship with health (physical and mental) and health promoting behaviours. A systematic search was performed, identifying observational studies with adult populations, ≥1 physical/mental health outcome(s), and ≥1 validated measure(s) of health-centric eating behaviour. Study design, sample characteristics and outcomes were extracted and characterised into four domains. Our search identified 8281 records, with 86 studies, 75 unique datasets, and 78 unique exposures including 94,710 individuals. Eating behaviours included intuitive eating (n = 48), mindful eating (n = 19), and eating competence (n = 11). There were 298 outcomes identified for body composition, size, and physical health (n = 116), mental health and wellbeing (n = 123), health promoting behaviours (n = 51) and other eating behaviour (n = 8). Higher levels of intuitive eating, mindful eating and eating competence were significantly related to a lower BMI, better diet quality and greater physical activity. Higher intuitive and mindful eating were significantly related to lower levels of disordered eating, and depressive symptoms, and greater body image, self-compassion, and mindfulness. Greater eating competence and intuitive eating were significantly related to higher fruit and vegetable intake, and greater eating competence to higher fibre intake and better sleep quality. Our results demonstrate that 'health-centric' eating behaviours are related to a range of favourable health outcomes and engagement in health promoting behaviours. These findings help to enhance our understanding of eating behaviours that do not centre around body weight, providing support for health-centric eating behaviour in healthcare. Future research should focus on intervention studies and more diverse population groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mindful eating is a concept that is increasingly being used to promote healthy eating. Observational studies have suggested associations with healthier eating behaviors, lower weight status, and favorable cardiovascular biomarkers. However, existing scales assessing mindful eating have some limitations. Our study aimed to develop and validate a scale assessing the level of mindful eating in a general population. METHODS The Mind-Eat Scale was developed in four main steps: 1. Generating an initial item pool covering all aspects of mindful eating; 2. Reviewing items with experts and naive individuals; 3. Administering the scale to a large and representative sample from the NutriNet-Santé cohort (N = 3102); 4. Conducting psychometric analyses. Construct validity was assessed using exploratory (EFA) (N1 = 1302) and confirmatory (CFA) (N2 = 1302, N3 = 498) factor analyses. Content, discriminant, convergent, and divergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were examined. RESULTS The initial pool of 95 items was refined to 24 items using EFA. The EFA highlighted six dimensions: Awareness, Non-reactivity, Openness, Gratitude, Non-judgement, and Hunger/Satiety, consisting of four items per dimension. CFAs showed a good fit for first and second-order models. Adequate content validity was confirmed. Discriminant, convergent, and divergent validity were supported by significant differences between subgroups of individuals, and correlations with eating behaviors and psychological well-being scales. The Mind-Eat Scale showed good reliability for all six dimensions, with high McDonald's ω and adequate intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). CONCLUSIONS This study validated the first tool assessing a total mindful eating score and its sub-dimensions in a general population. This scale can be an asset for clinical and epidemiological research on dietary behavior and related chronic diseases.

Abstract
Since the effects of flaxseed supplementation on lipid profile and liver enzymes are still controversial, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted in the present study to assess the effect of flaxseed supplementation on lipid profile and liver enzymes. The study was designed, conducted, and reported according to the guidelines of the 2020 preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement. A systematic and comprehensive search was performed in several databases from inception up to January 10, 2024. The meta-analysis on the impact of flaxseed supplementation on lipid profile and liver enzymes indicates that the overall effect of flaxseed supplementation on triglycerides, combining different doses, revealed a significant reduction with a WMD of - 230.72 (-53.95, - 27.49) and a P-value of 0.010. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) demonstrated a positive effect, with an overall WMD of 1.82 (0.27, 3.38) and a P-value of 0.021, indicating an increase in HDL levels. The liver enzymes AST and ALT displayed reductions in their levels, with overall WMDs of - 21.18 (-2.95, 0.59) and - 24.83 (-8.74, - 20.91), respectively. Subgroup analysis based on dosage revealed more pronounced reductions in ALT levels for doses below 2000 mg/day. Findings from this study suggest that a flaxseed supplement might be beneficial to modulate the blood lipid profile and liver enzymes.

Abstract
Chrysosplenium flagelliferum (CF) is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. However, there is a lack of research on its other pharmacological properties. In the present study, the bifunctional roles of CF in 3T3-L1 and RAW264.7 cells were investigated, focusing on its anti-obesity and immunostimulatory effects. In 3T3-L1 cells, CF effectively mitigated the accumulation of lipid droplets and triacylglycerol. Additionally, CF downregulated the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α protein levels; however, this effect was impeded by the knockdown of β-catenin using β-catenin-specific small interfering RNA. Consequently, CF-mediated inhibition of lipid accumulation was also decreased. CF increased the protein levels of adipose triglyceride lipase and phosphorylated hormone-sensitive lipase, while decreasing those of perilipin-1. Moreover, CF elevated the protein levels of phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase and PPARγ coactivator 1-α. In RAW264.7 cells, CF enhanced the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO), inducible NO synthase, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α, and increased their phagocytic capacities. Inhibition of Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 significantly reduced the effects of CF on the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and phagocytosis, indicating its crucial role in facilitating these effects. CF-induced increase in the production of pro-inflammatory mediators was controlled by the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and nuclear factor (NF)-κB pathways, and TLR4 inhibition attenuated the phosphorylation of these kinases. The results of the pesent study suggested that CF inhibits lipid accumulation by suppressing adipogenesis and inducing lipolysis and thermogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells, while stimulating macrophage activation via the activation of JNK and NF-κB signaling pathways mediated by TLR4 in RAW264.7 cells. Therefore, CF simultaneously exerts both anti-obesity and immunostimulatory effects.

Abstract
The prevalence of neglected tropical diseases, specifically those caused by soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and other parasites that infest the intestine as part of their life cycle, remains a problem in Indonesia. We assessed the effects of deworming programs and socioeconomic and ecological factors on the incidence rate of infections with STHs and other parasites in an urban area of the Bandung Regency. We recruited 361 children with stunted growth who met the inclusion criteria, and 48 of those children were at high risk of STH infection. The study was conducted between September 2020 and September 2021. We collected possible socioeconomic factors influencing the incidence rate of infections. We found the incidence rate of STH infections among the children with stunted growth to be 3.6%. We confirmed infections with Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium after a Ziehl-Nieelsen stool smear examination in two of the 48 children at risk of infection. We found 43.75% of the children had short stature and weight below the normal limits, while stunting and severe stunting were associated with Ascaris lumbricoides infection (44.70%, p = 0.035). Parents of children with stunted and severely stunted growth were more likely to have a low education level, lack knowledge about deworming program, and to be earning a low income. The mother's occupation had a particularly strong influence on the severity of the stunting (89.58%, p = 0.012). Our results show that deworming programs can affect the growth and development of children and that socioeconomic and ecological factors also play a role.

Abstract
AIM To date, there are limited clinical studies and real-world evidence investigating whether sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are associated with improved hepatic steatosis. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SGLT2i compared with that of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i) in improving the fatty liver index (FLI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective cohort study included new users of SGLT2i or DPP4i with T2DM and MASLD from a large claims database (JMDC Claims Database). The primary outcome was the incidence of improvement of the FLI. Cox proportional hazard models, weighted using propensity scores for predicting the initiation of treatment, were fitted to estimate hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Time-course changes in the FLI values were also assessed. RESULTS This study included 9127 SGLT2i and 12 286 DPP4i initiators. SGLT2i showed a higher incidence of improvement in the FLI (≥30%, ≥40% and ≥50% reduction from baseline FLI) compared with DPP4i, and the weighted hazard ratios were 1.27 (95% CI 1.18-1.38), 1.24 (95% CI 1.13-1.37) and 1.19 (95% CI 1.05-1.33), respectively. SGLT2i indicated a greater decreased in FLI values compared with DPP4i at up to 3 years of the follow-up period. CONCLUSION SGLT2is use appeared to be associated with a greater improvement of the FLI than DPP4i use in patients with T2DM and MASLD. In the absence of direct head-to-head comparisons from clinical studies, our study, using real-world data, may support physicians' decision-making in clinical practice.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the associations of conicity index (C-index) and relative fat mass (RFM) with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among adults in China. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 10 813 participants aged over 18 years in Shenzhen Longhua district were enrolled in a follow-up study conducted from 2018 to 2022. The participants were categorized based on quartiles (Q) of C-index and RFM. The Cox proportional hazards model was performed to examine the relationships between C-index, RFM and the risk of T2DM. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, including age, sex, occupation, marital status, education level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical exercise, hypertension status, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and total cholesterol (TC), both C-index and RFM showed positive and independent associations with risk of T2DM. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for T2DM risk in participants in C-index Q3 and Q4 compared with those in C-index Q1 were 1.50 (1.12, 2.02) and 1.73 (1.29, 2.30), and 1.94 (1.44, 2.63), 3.18 (1.79, 5.64), 4.91 (2.68, 9.00) for participants in RFM Q2, Q3 and Q4 compared with RFM Q1. These differences were statistically significant (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION C-index and RFM are strongly associated with new-onset T2DM and could be used to identify the risk of diabetes in large-scale epidemiological studies.

Abstract
AIM To validate the Individualized Metabolic Surgery (IMS) score and assess long-term remission of type 2 diabetes (T2D) after duodenal switch (DS)-type procedures in patients with obesity. In addition, to help guide metabolic procedure selection for those patients categorized as having severe T2D. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a retrospective single cohort study of all patients with T2D and severe obesity, who underwent DS-type procedures at a single institution from December 2010 to December 2018. Study endpoints included validating the IMS score in our cohort and evaluating the impact of DS-type procedures on long-term (≥ 5 years) remission of T2D, especially in patients with severe disease. A receiver operator characteristic curve was used to assess the accuracy of the IMS score using the area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS The study cohort included 30 patients with complete baseline and long-term glycaemic data after their index DS-type surgery. Twelve patients (40%) were classified with severe T2D, and the distribution of IMS-based severity groups was similar between our cohort and the original IMS study (P = .42). IMS scores predicted long-term T2D remission with AUC = 0.77. Patients with IMS-based severe diabetes achieved significantly higher long-term remission after DS-type procedures compared with gastric bypass and/or sleeve gastrectomy from the original IMS study (42% vs. 12%; P < .05). CONCLUSIONS The IMS score properly classifies the severity of T2D in our study cohort and adequately predicts its long-term remission after DS-type procedures. While T2D remission decreases with more severe IMS scores, long-term remission remains high after DS-type procedures among patients with severe disease.
