Intrinsic challenges and strategic approaches for enhancing the potential of natural rubber and its derivatives: A review

Natural rubber (NR) and its derivatives play indispensable roles in various industries due to their unique properties and versatile applications. However, the widespread utilization of NR faces intrinsic challenges such as limited mechanical strength, poor resistance to heat and organic solvent, poor electrical conductivity, and low compatibility with other materials, prompting researchers to explore enhancing its performance. Modified NRs (MNRs) like cyclization, deproteinization, chlorination, epoxidation, or grafting NR demonstrated a few enhanced merits compared to NR. However, various strategies, such as blending, vulcanization, crosslinking, grafting, plasticization, reinforcement, and nanostructuring, overcame most drawbacks. This review comprehensively examines these challenges and delves into the modification strategies employed to enhance the properties and expand the applications of NR and its derivatives. Furthermore, the review explores future visions for the NR industry, emphasizing integrating advanced modification techniques, adopting sustainable practices, and promoting circular economy principles. By elucidating the inherent challenges, outlining effective modification strategies, and envisioning future trajectories, this review provides valuable insights for stakeholders seeking to navigate and contribute to the sustainable development of the NR sector.

Evaluation of a protocol to assess a novel artificial biofilm equivalent for dentures-A prospective clinical pilot study

OBJECTIVES

This pilot study aimed to carry out preliminary tests of the removability of an artificial biofilm equivalent (ABE) and to verify the reproducibility of the ABE testing protocol for a planned main study.

BACKGROUND

There is a lack of data to develop suitable artificial biofilm substitutes, which may be helpful to perform denture hygiene education and to carry out in vitro examinations of oral hygiene products.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This single-group, prospective, longitudinal, interventional pilot study was conducted in Dresden (Germany) from February until December 2020. Participants were recruited who wore fully functional upper complete dentures. Denture biofilm was grown on acrylic specimens by wearing dentures for 12 h and 36 h using intraoral appliances. Acrylic specimens were coated with ABEs of three compositions: chitosan (ChS) 0.3 g, methylcellulose (MC) 1.7 g; ChS 0.2 g, MC 1.8 g; ChS 0.1 g, MC 1.9 g (labelled 1.7MC, 1.8MC and 1.9MC, respectively). All specimens underwent standardised mechanical brushing. The percentages of remaining biofilm (POB) were measured.

RESULTS

Thirty-one participants were prescreened, and eight (26%) were included. The appliances were well tolerated, and biofilm was collected. ABE was prepared and brushed as planned. Three and six brushing strokes were needed to remove 12-h and 36-h natural denture biofilm, respectively. Correspondingly, three brushing strokes were needed to remove 1.9MC ABE and six brushing strokes to remove 1.8MC and 1.7MC ABE. A reproducibility of ABE removal was indicated.

CONCLUSION

The removability of ABE and the ABE testing protocol were feasible and reproducible for conducting the future main study.

Escherichia coli grown in inexpensive conical flat-bottom polypropylene tubes produce a high level of pUC vector

The pUC-derived plasmid yield from E. coli using polypropylene tubes (PP) was compared among round and conical tubes. The yield from cells grown in a cheaper conical-PP with flat-bottom was 1.5-fold higher (p < 0.001) than other PP. The use of the conical-PP can save research budgets in the current inflationary environment.

Combined role of stearic acid and maleic anhydride in the development of thermoplastic starch-based materials with ultrahigh ductility and durability

The diverse properties reported for starch-based materials indicate their potential for use in the preparation of biodegradable flexible actuators. However, their natural brittleness and lack of durability after modification limit their practical application. Therefore, we propose a strategy for preparing flexible starch-based composites. The results of macro/micro property characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations indicated that using starch, maleic anhydride, and stearic acid (SA), the mobility of the starch chains was enhanced and retrogradation was inhibited through the synergistic effects induced by chain breaking, complex formation with SA, and esterification of the starch molecules. In addition, the elongation at break of the modified starch (MS) reached 2070 %, and considerable ductility (>1000 %) as well as well-complexed structure were maintained after six months. Furthermore, the MS was able to undergo self-healing after fracture or a temperature-controlled stiffness transition. Moreover, it underwent complete degradation in soil within 30 d. Finally, an actuator was prepared by doping the MS with nano-Fe3O4 particles to realize a dual magnetic and optical response. Dynamic monitoring was also achieved based on the electrical signal, thereby demonstrating the broad application scope of this material in the development of biodegradable flexible actuators.

Clinical translation of polycaprolactone-based tissue engineering scaffolds, fabricated via additive manufacturing: A review of their craniofacial applications

The craniofacial region is characterized by its intricate bony anatomy and exposure to heightened functional forces presenting a unique challenge for reconstruction. Additive manufacturing has revolutionized the creation of customized scaffolds with interconnected pores and biomimetic microarchitecture, offering precise adaptation to various craniofacial defects. Within this domain, medical-grade poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) has been extensively used for the fabrication of 3D printed scaffolds, specifically tailored for bone regeneration. Its adoption for load-bearing applications was driven mainly by its mechanical properties, adjustable biodegradation rates, and high biocompatibility. The present review aims to consolidating current insights into the clinical translation of PCL-based constructs designed for bone regeneration. It encompasses recent advances in enhancing the mechanical properties and augmenting biodegradation rates of PCL and PCL-based composite scaffolds. Moreover, it delves into various strategies improving cell proliferation and the osteogenic potential of PCL-based materials. These strategies provide insight into the refinement of scaffold microarchitecture, composition, and surface treatments or coatings, that include certain bioactive molecules such as growth factors, proteins, and ceramic nanoparticles. The review critically examines published data on the clinical applications of PCL scaffolds in both extraoral and intraoral craniofacial reconstructions. These applications include cranioplasty, nasal and orbital floor reconstruction, maxillofacial reconstruction, and intraoral bone regeneration. Patient demographics, surgical procedures, follow-up periods, complications and failures are thoroughly discussed. Although results from extraoral applications in the craniofacial region are encouraging, intraoral applications present a high frequency of complications and related failures. Moving forward, future studies should prioritize refining the clinical performance, particularly in the domain of intraoral applications, and providing comprehensive data on the long-term outcomes of PCL-based scaffolds in bone regeneration. Future perspective and limitations regarding the transition of such constructs from bench to bedside are also discussed.

Progress in food packaging applications of biopolymer-nanometal composites - A comprehensive review

Eco-friendly nanotechnology-enabled biopolymers are one of the novel concepts of packaging materials to substitute traditional synthetic polymers and their composites. This article succinctly reviews the recent developments of introducing additional functionalities to biopolymers using metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. The functionality of metal nanoparticles such as silver, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, copper oxide, gold, and magnesium oxide, as food packaging materials were discussed. The addition of nanoparticles in biopolymers improves mechanical properties, gas barrier properties, durability, temperature stability, moisture stability, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant property, and UV absorbance and can prevent the presence of ethylene and oxygen, hence extending the shelf life of foodstuffs. Other than this, the functional activity of these biopolymer composite films helps them to act like smart or intelligent packaging. The selection of metal nanoparticles, particle migration, toxicological effect, and potential future scope in the food packaging industry are also reviewed.

3D cellulose network confining MXene/MnO2 enables flexible wet spinning microfibers for high-performance fiber-shaped Zn-ion capacitors

Fiber-shaped Zn-ion capacitors (FSZICs) have shown great potential in wearable electronics due to their long cycle life, high energy density, and good flexibility. Nevertheless, it is still a critical challenge to develop a conductive fiber with long size and high mechanical properties as the FSZIC cathode using sustainable and low-cost materials. Herein, regenerated cellulose (RC) -based conductive microfibers are prepared by a simple, continuous, and scalable wet spinning process. The 3D nanoporous networks of RC caused by physical self-cross-linking allow MXene and MnO2 to be uniformly and firmly embedded. The rapid extrusion and limited drying result in the highly aligned structure of the fibers, endowing the hybrid fiber with an ultra-high tensile strength (145.83 Mpa) and Young's modulus (1672.11 Mpa). MXene/MnO2-RC-based FSZIC demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 110.01 mF cm-3, an energy density of 22.0 mWh cm-3 at 0.57 A cm-3 and excellent cycling stability with 90.5 % capacity retention after 5000 cycles. This work would lead to a great potential of cellulose for application in next-generation green and wearable electronics.

Exploring the potential of chitin and chitosan in nanobiocomposites for fungal immunological detection and antifungal action

Chitin is a polymer of N-acetylglucosamine and an essential component of the fungal cell wall. Chitosan is the deacetylated form of chitin and is also important for maintaining the integrity of this structure. Both polysaccharides are widely distributed in nature and have been shown to have a variety of applications in biomedicine, including their potential in immune sensing and as potential antifungal agents. In addition, chitin has been reported to play an important role in the pathogen-host interaction, involving innate and adaptive immune responses. This paper will explore the role of chitin and chitosan when incorporated into nanobiocomposites to improve their efficacy in detecting fungi of medical interest and inhibiting their growth. Potential applications in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine will be discussed, highlighting their promise in the development of more sensitive and effective tools for the early diagnosis of fungal infections. This review aims to highlight the importance of the convergence of nanotechnology and biology in addressing public health challenges.

Nanocellulose from agro-industrial wastes: A review on sources, production, applications, and current challenges

Significant volumes of agricultural and industrial waste are produced annually. With the global focus shifting towards sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, there is growing emphasis on recycling and utilizing materials derived from such waste, such as cellulose and lignin. In response to this imperative situation, nanocellulose materials have surfaced attracting heightened attention and research interest owing to their superior properties in terms of strength, stiffness, biodegradability, and water resistance. The current manuscript provided a comprehensive review encompassing the resources of nanocellulose, detailed pretreatment and extraction methods, and present applications of nanocellulose. More importantly, it highlighted the challenges related to its processing and utilization, along with potential solutions. After evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of different methods for producing nanocellulose, ultrasound combined with acid hydrolysis emerges as the most promising approach for large-scale production. While nanocellulose has established applications in water treatment, its potential within the food industry appears even more encouraging. Despite the numerous potential applications across various sectors, challenges persist regarding its modification, characterization, industrial-scale manufacturing, and regulatory policies. Overcoming these obstacles requires the development of new technologies and assessment tools aligned with policy. In essence, nanocellulose presents itself as an eco-friendly material with extensive application possibilities, prompting the need for additional research into its extraction, application suitability, and performance enhancement. This review focused on the wide application scenarios of nanocellulose, the challenges of nanocellulose application, and the possible solutions.

A review of recent advances of piezoelectric poly-L-lactic acid for biomedical applications

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), recognized as a piezoelectric material, not only demonstrates exceptional piezoelectric properties but also exhibits commendable biocompatibility and biodegradability. These properties render PLLA highly promising for diverse applications, including sensors, wearable devices, biomedical engineering, and related domains. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the distinctive piezoelectric effect of PLLA-based material and delves into the latest advancements in its preparation strategies as a piezoelectric material. It further presents recent research progress in PLLA-based piezoelectric materials, particularly in the realms of health monitoring, skin repair, nerve regeneration, and tissue repair. The discourse extends to providing insights into potential future trajectories for the development of PLLA-based piezoelectric materials.

The role of extracellular matrix in angiogenesis: Beyond adhesion and structure

While the extracellular matrix (ECM) has long been recognized for its structural contributions, anchoring cells for adhesion, providing mechanical support, and maintaining tissue integrity, recent efforts have elucidated its dynamic, reciprocal, and diverse properties on angiogenesis. The ECM modulates angiogenic signaling and mechanical transduction, influences the extent and degree of receptor activation, controls cellular behaviors, and serves as a reservoir for bioactive macromolecules. Collectively, these factors guide the formation, maturation, and stabilization of a functional vascular network. This review aims to shed light on the versatile roles of the ECM in angiogenesis, transcending its traditional functions as a mere structural material. We will explore its engagement and synergy in signaling modulation, interactions with various angiogenic factors, and highlight its importance in both health and disease. By capturing the essence of the ECM's diverse functionalities, we highlight the significance in the broader context of vascular biology, enabling the design of novel biomaterials to engineer vascularized tissues and their potential therapeutic implications.

Laser-assisted manipulation of Volta potential pattern on the TC4 surface for improved hBMSCs osteogenesis

The Ti6Al4V (TC4) alloy, a prevalent biomedical material in orthopedics, still faces limitation of the insufficient osseointegration. To improve the bioactivity of TC4, introducing the electric environment onto the TC4 surface may be an effective way in the view of the necessity of endogenous electric microenvironment in bone regeneration. Herein, a Volta potential pattern was engendered on the TC4 surface via parallel laser patterning, so as to promote the osteogenic differentiation of cells. A 15 W laser successfully transformed the original α + β dual phase towards radially distributed lath-like martensite phase in the laser treated region. The atomic lattice distortion between the heterogeneous microstructures of the laser treated and untreated regions leads to a significant Volta potential fluctuation on the TC4 surface. The Volta potential pattern as well as the laser-engraved microgrooves respectively induced mutually orthogonal cell alignments. The hBMSCs osteogenic differentiation was significantly enhanced on the laser treated TC4 surfaces in comparison to the surface without the laser treatment. Moreover, a drastic Volta potential gradient on the TC4 surface (treated with 15 W power and 400 μm interval) resulted in the most pronounced osteogenic differentiation tendency compared to other groups. Modulating the electric environment on the TC4 surface by manipulating the phase transformation may provide an effective way in evoking favorable cell response of bone regeneration, thereby improving the bioactivity of TC4 implant.

Machine learning to mechanically assess 2D and 3D biomimetic electrospun scaffolds for tissue engineering applications: Between the predictability and the interpretability

Currently, the use of autografts is the gold standard for the replacement of many damaged biological tissues. However, this practice presents disadvantages that can be mitigated through tissue-engineered implants. The aim of this study is to explore how machine learning can mechanically evaluate 2D and 3D polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) electrospun scaffolds (one twisted filament, 3 twisted filament and 3 twisted/braided filament scaffolds) for their use in different tissue engineering applications. Crosslinked and non-crosslinked scaffolds were fabricated and mechanically characterised, in dry/wet conditions and under longitudinal/transverse loading, using tensile testing. 28 machine learning models (ML) were used to predict the mechanical properties of the scaffolds. 4 exogenous variables (structure, environmental condition, crosslinking and direction of the load) were used to predict 2 endogenous variables (Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength). ML models were able to identify 6 structures and testing conditions with comparable Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength to ligamentous tissue, skin tissue, oral and nasal tissue, and renal tissue. This novel study proved that Classification and Regression Trees (CART) models were an innovative and easy to interpret tool to identify biomimetic electrospun structures; however, Cubist and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models were the most accurate, with R2 of 0.93 and 0.8, to predict the ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus, respectively. This approach can be implemented to optimise the manufacturing process in different applications.

Zwitterionic modified and freeze-thaw reinforced foldable hydrogel as intraocular lens for posterior capsule opacification prevention

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a predominant postoperative complication, often leading to visual impairment due to the aberrant proliferation and adhesion of lens epithelial cells (LECs) and protein precipitates subsequent to intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. To address this clinical issue, a foldable and antifouling sharp-edged IOL implant based on naturally-derived cellulose hydrogel is synthesized. The mechanical strength and transparency of the hydrogel is enhanced via repeated freeze-thaw (FT) cycles. The incorporated zwitterionic modifications can remarkably prevent the incidence of PCO by exhibiting proteins repulsion and cell anti-adhesion properties. The graft of dopamine onto both the haptic and the periphery of the posterior surface ensures the adhesion of the hydrogel to the posterior capsule and impedes the migration of LECs without compromising transparency. In in vivo study, the zwitterionic modified foldable hydrogel exhibits uveal and capsular biocompatibility synchronously with no signs of inflammatory response and prevent PCO formation, better than that of commercialized and PEG-modified IOL. With foldability, endurability, antifouling effect, and adhesive to posterior capsule, the reported hydrogel featuring heterogeneous surface design displays great potential to eradicate PCO and attain post-operative efficacy after cataract surgery.

Injectable and in situ foaming shape-adaptive porous Bio-based polyurethane scaffold used for cartilage regeneration

Irregular articular cartilage injury is a common type of joint trauma, often resulting from intense impacts and other factors that lead to irregularly shaped wounds, the limited regenerative capacity of cartilage and the mismatched shape of the scaffods have contributed to unsatisfactory therapeutic outcomes. While injectable materials are a traditional solution to adapt to irregular cartilage defects, they have limitations, and injectable materials often lack the porous microstructures favorable for the rapid proliferation of cartilage cells. In this study, an injectable porous polyurethane scaffold named PU-BDO-Gelatin-Foam (PUBGF) was prepared. After injection into cartilage defects, PUBGF forms in situ at the site of the defect and exhibits a dynamic microstructure during the initial two weeks. This dynamic microstructure endows the scaffold with the ability to retain substances within its interior, thereby enhancing its capacity to promote chondrogenesis. Furthermore, the chondral repair efficacy of PUBGF was validated by directly injecting it into rat articular cartilage injury sites. The injectable PUBGF scaffold demonstrates a superior potential for promoting the repair of cartilage defects when compared to traditional porous polyurethane scaffolds. The substance retention ability of this injectable porous scaffold makes it a promising option for clinical applications.

Structural and optical properties of alginate-based antibacterial dressing with calcium phosphate and zinc oxide for biodegradable wound painting applications

The skin is the outermost part of the body. Although susceptible to damage, the skin is in direct contact with the external environment. Wound dressing is a clinical method that plays a vital role in wound healing. Herein, we developed an antibacterial wound dressing using alginate as the basic material. The dressing was prepared using the solvent casting method, which was used to analyze the effects of adding CaP and ZnO on its structural, optical, and antibacterial properties. Adding CaP exhibited strong but stiff mechanical properties, unlike the CaP/ZnO, which possessed high strength and elasticity. The optical properties of sample S2 did not have a considerable impact. By contrast, the addition of ZnO to sample S3 notably increases the wavelength and absorption value. The diameter of the inhibition zone for S. aureus bacteria exhibited a successive increase in its antibacterial properties, and sample S3 exhibited the highest value. Thus, sample S3 is the most promising wound dressing concerning speeding up the wound healing process because it possesses the most optimal mechanical, optical, and antibacterial properties. The main limitation to be addressed is that sample S3 cannot be easily digested in the environment.

Recent advances of electrospun strategies in topical products encompassing skincare and dermatological treatments

As the potential applications of electrospinning in healthcare continue to be explored, along with advancements in industrial-scale solutions and the emergence of portable electrospinning devices, some researchers have explored electrospinning technology in topical products, including its application in skincare, such as facial masks, beauty patches, sunscreen, and dermatological treatments for conditions like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, skin cancer, etc. In this review, we first outline the fundamental principles of electrospinning and provide an overview of existing solutions for large-scale production and the components and functionalities of portable spinning devices. Based on the essential functionalities required for skincare products and the mechanisms and treatment methods for the aforementioned dermatological diseases, we summarize the potential advantages of electrospinning technology in these areas, including encapsulation, sustained release, large surface area, and biocompatibility, among others. Furthermore, considering the further commercialization and clinical development of electrospinning technology, we offer our insights on current challenges and future perspectives in these areas, including issues such as ingredients, functionality, residue concerns, environmental impact, and efficiency issues.

Preparation of sodium alginate modified silver-metal organic framework and application in citric acid/PVA antimicrobial packaging

Silver-metal organic framework (Ag@MOF) has exhibited outstanding antimicrobial activity in antimicrobial applications, and reducing the biotoxicity associated with silver has become a research priority. In this study, Ag@MOF was initially modified with sodium alginate (SA) to form SA-Ag@MOF. The results showed that SA could control the release of Ag+, reducing the release by about 8% at 24 h, and the biotoxicity was significantly reduced. Finally, SA-Ag@MOF was applied as an antimicrobial agent in citric acid-modified PVA film to develop a novel composite antimicrobial film. When added at 2 MIC, the CA3-M2 film can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus, and the inhibition rate has reached 98%. For white radish packaging applications, CA3-M2 film inhibited the growth of surface microorganisms, while ensuring moisture and tissue hardness to extend shelf-life up to 7 days. Overall, the strategy conceived here can be a theoretical basis for novel antimicrobial packaging.

Current multi-scale biomaterials for tissue regeneration following spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injury (SCI) may cause loss of motor and sensory function, autonomic dysfunction, and thus disrupt the quality of life of patients, leading to severe disability and significant psychological, social, and economic burden. At present, existing therapy for SCI have limited ability to promote neural function recovery, and there is an urgent need to develop innovative regenerative approaches to repair SCI. Biomaterials have become a promising strategy to promote the regeneration and repair of damaged nerve tissue after SCI. Biomaterials can provide support for nerve tissue by filling cavities, and improve local inflammatory responses and reshape extracellular matrix structures through unique biochemical properties to create the optimal microenvironment at the SCI site, thereby promoting neurogenesis and reconnecting damaged spinal cord tissue. Considering the importance of biomaterials in repairing SCI, this article reviews the latest progress of multi-scale biomaterials in SCI treatment and tissue regeneration, and evaluates the relevant technologies for manufacturing biomaterials.

Preparation of graphene/carbon nanotube-cellulose composites assisted by ionic liquids: A review

As is well known, cellulose, as a natural polymer material with abundant reserves, plays an irreplaceable role as the major raw material in energy and chemical-related fields. With the continuous advancement of technology, native single-component cellulose is often unsatisfactory for practical applications, constructing composites is an effective means of expanding the applications. When compounded with other ingredients to prepare composites, cellulose usually needs to be dissolved and regenerated to obtain good dispersion. Current studies have revealed that cellulose is insoluble in conventional solvents, and the limited types of solvent systems that can dissolve cellulose tend to degrade the cellulose during the dissolution process, altering the cellulose properties. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of solvents that are capable of dissolving cellulose without adversely affecting the cellulose during the dissolution process, such as degradation. Graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are poorly dispersed and easily agglomerated by π-π stacking in general solvents, whereas ILs can effectively shield them from π-π stacking, resulting in a favorable and steady dispersion. Thus, the cellulose composites of graphene/CNTs can be prepared with the assistance of ILs. In this paper, the solubilization of cellulose by ILs and the solubilization mechanism to the preparation of cellulose composites with graphene/CNTs are reviewed, the interactions between graphene, CNTs and cellulose in the composites are elucidated, and the preparation of cellulose composites with graphene/CNTs is introduced in terms of their structure, properties and application potential.

Trends in sustainable chitosan-based hydrogel technology for circular biomedical engineering: A review

Eco-friendly materials have emerged in biomedical engineering, driving major advances in chitosan-based hydrogels. These hydrogels offer a promising green alternative to conventional polymers due to their non-toxicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, environmental friendliness, affordability, and easy accessibility. Known for their remarkable properties such as drug encapsulation, delivery capabilities, biosensing, functional scaffolding, and antimicrobial behavior, chitosan hydrogels are at the forefront of biomedical research. This paper explores the fabrication and modification methods of chitosan hydrogels for diverse applications, highlighting their role in advancing climate-neutral healthcare technologies. It reviews significant scientific advancements and trends chitosan hydrogels focusing on cancer diagnosis, drug delivery, and wound care. Additionally, it addresses current challenges and green synthesis practices that support a circular economy, enhancing biomedical sustainability. By providing an in-depth analysis of the latest evidence on climate-neutral management, this review aims to facilitate informed decision-making and foster the development of sustainable strategies leveraging chitosan hydrogel technology. The insights from this comprehensive examination are pivotal for steering future research and applications in sustainable biomedical solutions.

Copper nanoparticles loaded gelatin/ polyvinyl alcohol/ guar gum-based 3D printable multimaterial hydrogel for tissue engineering applications

Hydrogels are becoming increasingly significant in tissue engineering because of their numerous benefits, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and their ability to provide a supportive structure for cell proliferation. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a new multimaterial hydrogel with 3D-printing capabilities composed of copper nanoparticle-reinforced gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and guar gum-based biomaterials intended for tissue engineering applications. Combining CuNPs aims to enhance the hydrogel's antibacterial properties, mechanical strength, and bioactivity, which are essential for successful tissue regeneration. Hydrogels are chemically cross-linked with glyoxal and analyzed through different assessments to examine the compressive behavior, surface morphology, sorbing capacity, biocompatibility, thermal stability, and degradation properties. The results demonstrated that including CuNPs significantly improved the hydrogel's compressive modulus (4.18 MPa) for the hydrogel with the CuNPs and provided better antibacterial activity against common pathogens with controlled degradation. All the hydrogels exhibited a lower coefficient of friction, which was below 0.1. In vitro cell culture studies using chondrocytes indicated that the CuNPs-loaded hydrogel supported cell proliferation and growth of chondrogenic genes such as collagen type II (COL2) and aggrecan (ACAN). The biocompatibility and enhanced mechanical properties of the multimaterial hydrogel make it a promising candidate for developing customized, patient-specific tissue engineering scaffolds.

Review of ionic liquid and ionogel-based biomaterials for advanced drug delivery

Ionic liquids (ILs) play a crucial role in the design of novel materials. The ionic nature of ILs provides numerous advantages in drug delivery, acting as a green solvent or active ingredient to enhance the solubility, permeability, and binding efficiency of drugs. They could also function as a structuring agent in the development of nano/micro particles for drug delivery, including micelles, vesicles, gels, emulsion, and more. This review summarize the ILs and IL-based gel structures with their advanced drug delivery applications. The first part of review focuses on the role of ILs in drug formulation and the applications of ILs in drug delivery. The second part of review offers a comprehensive overview of recent drug delivery applications of IL-based gel. It aims to offer new perspectives and attract more attention to open up new avenues in the biomedical applications of ILs and IL-based gels.

Wastewater-based epidemiology methodology to investigate human exposure to bisphenol A, bisphenol F and bisphenol S

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has become an invaluable tool for tracking the evolution of use or exposure of/to numerous substances. Bisphenols, commonly utilized in manufacturing plastic goods, have been categorized as endocrine disrupting chemicals, underscoring the critical need for real-time data on their local-level exposure to safeguard public health. In this study, we have developed a novel analytical method and WBE framework for the assessment of population-level exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and its most prominent substitutes, bisphenols F and S (BPF and BPS), through the determination their Phase II metabolites in wastewater by WBE. Stability and exclusivity tests denoted that glucuronides are not stable in sewage, whereas sulfate metabolites are good biomarkers. Therefore, a solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for the bisphenols' monosulfates and BPA bissulfate. The analytical method was validated with three different wastewater matrices, providing trueness (as recovery) in the 79-112 % range with relative standard deviations < 12 %, and method quantification limits below 2 ng L-1 for monosulfates, but higher (35 ng L-1) for BPA bissulfate. Subsequently, the method was applied to 24h-composite raw wastewater samples collected over a week in 4 different locations in Spain and Portugal. BPA bissulfate was not detected, but the three monosulfate metabolites of each bisphenol were positively detected in the samples, being the metabolite of BPA the most prevalent, followed by those of BPF and BPS. Community-wide BPA intake was then estimated to be higher than the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 2 × 10-4 µg kg-1day-1 in all locations. In the case of BPF and BPS, there is not enough metabolism data or even established limit, but they would also surpass safe levels in several locations if a similar metabolism and TDI would be assumed. This innovative method could be used to a larger set of wastewater-treatment plants as an early-warning approach on human exposure to bisphenols.

Biomaterials with antifungal strategies to fight oral infections

Oral fungal infections pose a threat to human health and increase the economic burden of oral diseases by prolonging and complicating treatment. A cost-effective strategy is to try to prevent these infections from happening in the first place. With this purpose, biomaterials with antifungal properties are a crucial element to overcome fungal infections in the oral cavity. In this review, we go through different kinds of biomaterials and coatings that can be used to functionalize them. We also review their potential as a therapeutic approach in addition to prophylaxis, by going through traditional and alternative antifungal compounds, e.g., essential oils, that could be incorporated in them, to enhance their efficacy against fungal pathogens. We aim to highlight the potential of these technologies and propose questions that need to be addressed in prospective research. Finally, we intend to concatenate the key aspects and technologies on the use of biomaterials in oral health, to create an easy to find summary of the current state-of-the-art for researchers in the field.

Riboflavin-induced photo-ATRP electrochemical strategy for detection of biomarker trypsin

The detection of trypsin and its inhibitors is important for both clinical diagnosis and disease treatment. Abnormal trypsin activity affects pancreatic function and leads to corresponding pathological changes in the body. Therefore, the study presented a riboflavin-induced photo-ATRP electrochemical assay of trypsin activity and its inhibitor, including detection of trypsin activity in real urine samples. Experiments were performed on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes modified with sulfhydryl groups of 3-mercaptopropionic acid, and target trypsin-specific cleavage of BSA-Au nanocluster (BSA-Au NCs) was followed by the modification of Au NCs to the electrodes using Au-S. The Au NCs immobilized monodeoxy-monomercapto-β-cyclodextrin@adamantan-2-amine (SH-β-CD@2-NH2-Ada) host-guest inclusion complexes to the electrode surfaces via Au-S. In a two-component photo-initiator system consisting of riboflavin as an initiator and ascorbic acid (AA) as a mild reducing agent under mild blue light radiation, a large number of electroactive substances were grafted onto the electrode surface to generate electrochemical signals. In addition, we have successfully realized the detection of clinical drug inhibitors of trypsin. The detection limit of the system is as low as 0.0024 ng/mL, which much littler than the average standard of trypsin in the patient's urine or serum. It's worth noting that this work will provide researchers with a different route to design electrochemical sensors based on non-covalent recognition strategies.

Controllable radical polymerization of TEMPO redox for stable and sensitive enzyme electrode interface

Assembling functional molecules on the surface of an enzyme electrode is the most basic technique for constructing a biosensor. However, precise control of electron transfer interface or electron mediator on the electrode surface remains a challenge, which is a key step that affects the stability and sensitivity of enzyme-based biosensors. In this study, we propose the use of controllable free radical polymerization to grow stable 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) polymer as electron mediator on enzyme surface for the first time. Through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, electrode surface coverage measurement, static contact angle (SCA), and a series of electrochemical methods, it has been demonstrated that the TEMPO-based enzyme electrode exhibits a uniform hydrophilic morphology and stable electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the results show that the sensor demonstrates high sensitivity for detecting glucose biomolecules in artificial sweat and serum. Attributing to the quantitative and controllable radical polymerization of TEMPO redox assembled enzyme electrode surface, the as-proposed biosensor providing a use, storage, and inter-batch sensing stability, providing a vital platform for wearable/implantable biochemical sensors.

Nanocellulose-based porous lightweight materials with flame retardant properties: A review

This review discusses the development and application of nanocellulose (NC)-aerogels, a sustainable and biodegradable biomaterial, with enhanced flame retardant (FR) properties. NC-aerogels combine the excellent physical and mechanical properties of NC with the low density and thermal conductivity of aerogels, making them promising for thermal insulation and other fields. However, the flammability of NC-aerogels limits their use in some applications, such as electromagnetic interference shielding, oil/water separation, and flame-resistant textiles. The review covers the design, fabrication, modification, and working mechanism of NC porous materials, focusing on how advanced technologies can impart FR properties into them. The review also evaluates the FR performance of NC-aerogels by employing widely recognized tests, such as the limited oxygen index, cone calorimeter, and UL-94. The review also explores the integration of innovative and eco-friendly materials, such as MXene, metal-organic frameworks, dopamine, lignin, and alginate, into NC-aerogels, to improve their FR performance and functionality. The review concludes by outlining the potential, challenges, and limitations of future research on FR NC-aerogels, identifying the obstacles and potential solutions, and understanding the current progress and gaps in the field.

Green NiO nanoparticle-integrated PVA-alginate hydrogel: potent nanocatalyst for efficient reduction of anthropogenic water pollutants

Hydrogel nanocatalyst composed of nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles embedded in PVA-alginate hydrogels were potentially explored toward the reduction of anthropogenic water pollutants. The NiO nanoparticles was accomplished via green method using waste pineapple peel extract. The formation of the nanoparticles was affirmed from different analytical techniques such as UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, TGA, FESEM, and EDS. Spherical NiO nanoparticles were obtained having an average size of 11.5 nm. The nano NiO were then integrated into PVA-alginate hydrogel matrix forming a nanocomposite hydrogel (PVALg@ NiO). The integration of nano NiO rendered an improved thermal stability to the parent hydrogel. The PVALg@ NiO hydrogel was utilized as a catalyst in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), potassium hexacyanoferrate (III), rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), and malachite green (MG) in the presence of a reducing agent, i.e., NaBH4. Under optimized conditions, the reduction reactions were completed by 4.0 min and 3.0 min for 4-NP and potassium hexacyanoferrate (III), respectively, and the rate constant was estimated to be 1.14 min-1 and 2.15 min-1. The rate of reduction was found to be faster for the dyes and the respective rate constants were be 0.17 s-1 for RhB, MG and 0.05 s-1 for MO. The PVALg@ NiO hydrogel nanocatalyst demonstrated a recyclability of four runs without any perceptible diminution in its catalytic mettle. The efficacy of the PVALg@ NiO hydrogel nanocatalyst was further examined for the reduction of dyes in real water samples collected from different sources and the results affirm its high catalytic potential. Thus, this study paves the path for the development of a sustainable hydrogel nanocatalyst for reduction of hazardous pollutants in wastewater treatment.

Development of starch-cellulose composite films with antimicrobial potential

This study explored the structure and performance of starch-based antibacterial films reinforced with black tea cellulose nanocrystals (BT-CNCs). The optimal addition amount of BT-CNCs is 5 % (w/w Starch). This nanocrystal-infused film, incorporating chitosan (CS), ε-polylysine (ε-PL), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONP) as antibacterial agents, exhibited a smooth, continuous surface. The addition of BT-CNCs and antibacterial agents did not change the group characteristic peaks of the film, but changed the crystallinity slightly. The films, namely St, St/CNCs, St/CNCs/CS, and St/CNCs/ε-P, maintained high light transmittance (above 80 %), except for the St/CNCs/ZnONP film, which effectively shielded UV radiation. The combined use of antibacterial agents and BT-CNCs enhanced the water and oxygen barrier properties of the film. Notably, the St/CNCs/CS film exhibited the lowest solubility (17.74 % ± 0.36) and the highest tensile strength (14.23 ± 0.16 MPa). The antibacterial efficacy of the films decreased in the order of St/CNCs/ZnONP, St/CNCs/ε-PL, and St/CNCs/CS, with a more pronounced inhibitory effect on E. coli compared to S. aureus. This study marries natural waste recycling with cutting-edge food packaging technology, setting a new benchmark for the development of sustainable packaging materials.

Oral administration microrobots for drug delivery

Oral administration is the most simple, noninvasive, convenient treatment. With the increasing demands on the targeted drug delivery, the traditional oral treatment now is facing some challenges: 1) biologics how to implement the oral treatment and ensure the bioavailability is not lower than the subcutaneous injections; 2) How to achieve targeted therapy of some drugs in the gastrointestinal tract? Based on these two issues, drug delivery microrobots have shown great application prospect in oral drug delivery due to their characteristics of flexible locomotion or driven ability. Therefore, this paper summarizes various drug delivery microrobots developed in recent years and divides them into four categories according to different driving modes: magnetic-controlled drug delivery microrobots, anchored drug delivery microrobots, self-propelled drug delivery microrobots and biohybrid drug delivery microrobots. As oral drug delivery microrobots involve disciplines such as materials science, mechanical engineering, medicine, and control systems, this paper begins by introducing the gastrointestinal barriers that oral drug delivery must overcome. Subsequently, it provides an overview of typical materials involved in the design process of oral drug delivery microrobots. To enhance readers' understanding of the working principles and design process of oral drug delivery microrobots, we present a guideline for designing such microrobots. Furthermore, the current development status of various types of oral drug delivery microrobots is reviewed, summarizing their respective advantages and limitations. Finally, considering the significant concerns regarding safety and clinical translation, we discuss the challenges and prospections of clinical translation for various oral drug delivery microrobots presented in this paper, providing corresponding suggestions for addressing some existing challenges.

Material-based treatment strategies against intraosseous implant biofilm infection

Implant-associated infections present a significant clinical obstacle for orthopedic practitioners, with bacterial biofilm formation serving as a pivotal factor in the initiation, progression, and management of such infections. Conventional approaches have proven inadequate in fully eradicating biofilm-related infections. Consequently, novel material-based therapeutic strategies have been developed, encompassing the utilization of antimicrobial agents, delivery vehicles, and synergistic antibacterial systems. In this review, we provide a succinct overview of recent advancements in anti-biofilm strategies, with the aim of offering insights that may aid in the treatment of intraosseous implant infections.

Tetrazine-trans-cyclooctene ligation: Unveiling the chemistry and applications within the human body

Bioorthogonal reactions have revolutionized chemical biology by enabling selective chemical transformations within living organisms and cells. This review comprehensively explores bioorthogonal chemistry, emphasizing inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reactions between tetrazines and strained dienophiles and their crucial role in chemical biology and various applications within the human body. This highly reactive and selective reaction finds diverse applications, including cleaving antibody-drug conjugates, prodrugs, proteins, peptide antigens, and enzyme substrates. The versatility extends to hydrogel chemistry, which is crucial for biomedical applications, yet it faces challenges in achieving precise cellularization. In situ activation of cytotoxic compounds from injectable biopolymer belongs to the click-activated protodrugs against cancer (CAPAC) platform, an innovative approach to tumor-targeted prodrug delivery and activation. The CAPAC platform, relying on click chemistry between trans-cyclooctene (TCO) and tetrazine-modified biopolymers, exhibits modularity across diverse tumor characteristics, presenting a promising approach in anticancer therapeutics. The review highlights the importance of bioorthogonal reactions in developing radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and theranostics, offering a promising avenue for diverse therapeutic applications.

Bioactive material‑sodium alginate-polyvinyl alcohol composite film scaffold for bone tissue engineering application

Road accidents and infection-causing diseases during bone surgery are serious problems in orthopedics, and thus, addressing these pressing challenges is crucial. In the present study, the 70S30C calcium silicate bioactive material (BM) is synthesized by a sustainable approach employing a precipitation method using recycled rice husk and eggshells as a precursor of silica and calcium. Further, 70S30C BM is composited with sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and the films were prepared by solvent casting method. The composite films were prepared without the addition of acid, binder, and crosslinking agents. Further, the films were characterized by BET, XRD, ATR-FTIR, SEM, and EDS mapping. The in vitro bioactivity and biodegradation study is performed in the simulated body fluid (SBF). The in vitro haemolysis study is executed using human blood and the results demonstrate haemocompatibility of the composite films. The ex ovo CAM assay also exhibits good neovascularization. The in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility assay proves its non-toxic nature. Further, the in vivo study reveals that the engineered composite film demonstrates accelerated osteogenesis. This work broadens the orthopedic potential of the composite film and offers bioactivity, haemocompatibility, angiogenesis, non-toxicity, and in vivo osteogenesis which would serve as a potential candidate for bone tissue engineering application.

Palladium nanoparticles anchored on NiO particles-modified micro-size chitosan spheres: A promising, active, and retrievable catalyst system for treatment of environmental pollutants

Efficient treatment of toxic organic pollutants in water/wastewater by using innovative, cost efficient, and simple technologies has recently become an important issue worldwide. Remediation of these pollutants with chemical reduction in the presence of a nano-sized catalyst and a reducing agent is one of the most useful methodologies. In the present study, we have designed a promising heterogeneous catalyst system (Pd@CS-NiO) by easy and efficient stabilization of palladium nanoparticles on the surface of microspheres composed of chitosan (CS)-NiO particles (CS-NiO) for the reduction of organic pollutants. The nano-structure of the developed Pd@CS-NiO was successfully validated using FE-SEM, XRD, EDS, TEM, and FTIR/ATR and its particles size was determined as 10 nm. The catalytic power of Pd@CS-NiO was then assessed in the reduction of 4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine (4-NPDA), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), 4-nitroaniline (4-NA), 2-nitroaniline (2-NA), and some organic dyes, namely methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous medium at room temperature. The reductions were thoroughly studied spectro-photometrically. The tests displayed that the synthesized Pd@CS-NiO was a highly active and useful catalyst that reduced these pollutants in 0-145 s. Moreover, the rate constants for 2-NA, 4-NP, 4-NA, 4-NPDA, MO, and RhB were found to be 0.017 s-1, 0.011 s-1, 0.006 s-1, 0.013 s-1, 0.023 s-1, and 0.03 s-1, respectively. Moreover, the recycling test indicated that Pd@CS-NiO may be recovered easily thanks to its micro size nature and could be used up to seven steps, confirming its practical application potential.

Silver nanoparticles loaded triple-layered cellulose-acetate based multifunctional dressing for wound healing

Chronic wounds present considerable challenges which delay their effective healing. Currently, there are several biomaterial-based wound dressings available for healing diverse wound types. However, most of commercial wound dressings are too expensive to be affordable to the patients belonging to the middle and lower socioeconomic strata of the society. Thus, in this investigation affordable triple layered nanofibrous bandages were fabricated using the layer-by-layer approach. Here, the topmost layer comprised of a hydrophilic poly vinyl alcohol layer, cross-linked with citric acid. The middle layer comprising of cellulose acetate was loaded with silver nanoparticles as an antibacterial agent, while the lowermost layer was fabricated using hydrophobic polycaprolactone. The triple-layered nanofibrous bandages having a nano-topography, exhibited a smooth, uniform and bead-free morphology, with the nanofiber diameter ranging between 200 and 300 nm. The nanofibers demonstrated excellent wettability, slow in vitro degradation, controlled release of nano‑silver and potent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative (E.coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria. The fabricated bandages had excellent mechanical strength upto 12.72 ± 0.790 M. Pa, which was suitable for biomedical and tissue engineering applications. The bandage demonstrated excellent in vitro hemocompatibility and biocompatibility. In vivo excisional wound contraction, along with H and E and Masson's Trichrome staining further confirmed the potential of the nanofibrous bandage for full-thickness wound healing. Pre-clinical investigations thus indicated the possibility of further evaluating the triple-layered nanofibrous dressing in clinical settings.

Transparent, thermal stable, water resistant and high gas barrier films from cellulose nanocrystals prepared by reactive deep eutectic solvents

Nanocellulose-based film, as a novel new type of film mainly made of nanosized cellulose, has demonstrated an ideal combination of renewability and enhanced or novel properties. Considerable efforts have been made to enhance its intrinsic properties or create new functions to expand its applications, such as in food packaging, water treatment or flexible electronics. In this paper, two different types of deep eutectic solvents (guanidine sulfamate-glycerol and guanidine sulfamate-choline chloride) were formulated and applied to prepare cellulose nanocrystals with dialdehyde cellulose (DAC). The effects of reaction conditions including time, temperature and cellulose-DES ratio on the grafting degree and yield were studied. After ultrasonication, two types of CNCs, with an average diameter of 3-5 nm and an average length of 140.7-204.2 nm, were obtained. The synthesized CNCs displayed an enhanced thermal stability compared to pristine cellulose. Moreover, highly transparent (light transmittance higher than 90 %) and water stable nanocellulose based films (a wet tensile strength of higher than 30 MPa after immersing in water for 24 h) were fabricated. Besides, the obtained films exhibited low oxygen transmission rate, showing a good potential application in food packaging.

Mechanical and biological behavior of double network hydrogels reinforced with alginate versus gellan gum

Alginate and gellan gum have both been used by researchers as reinforcing networks to create tough and biocompatible polyethylene glycol (PEG) based double network (DN) hydrogels; however, the relative advantages and disadvantages of each approach are not understood. This study directly compares the mechanical and biological properties of polyethylene glycol di-methacrylate (PEGDMA) hybrid DN hydrogels reinforced with either gellan gum or sodium alginate using PEGDMA concentrations from 10 to 20 wt% and reinforcing network concentrations of 1 and 2 wt%. The findings demonstrate that gellan gum reinforcement is more effective at increasing the strength, stiffness, and toughness of PEGDMA DN hydrogels. In contrast, alginate reinforcement yields DN hydrogels with greater stretchability compared to gellan gum reinforced PEGDMA. Furthermore, separate measurements of toughness via unnotched work of rupture testing and notched fracture toughness testing showed a strong correlation of these two properties for a single reinforcing network type, but not across the two types of reinforcing networks. This suggests that additional notched fracture toughness experiments are important for understanding the full mechanical response when comparing different tough DN hydrogel systems. Regarding the biological response, after conjugation of matrix protein to the surface of both materials robust cell attachment and spreading was supported with higher yes associated protein (YAP) nuclear expression observed in populations adhering to the stiffer gellan gum-PEGDMA material. This study provides valuable insights regarding how to design double network hydrogels for specific property requirements, e.g., for use in biomedical devices, as scaffolding for tissue engineering, or in soft robotic applications.

Advances on carbon nanomaterials and their applications in medical diagnosis and drug delivery

Carbon nanomaterials are indispensable due to their unique properties of high electrical conductivity, mechanical strength and thermal stability, which makes them important nanomaterials in biomedical applications and waste management. Limitations of conventional nanomaterials, such as limited surface area, difficulty in fine tuning electrical or thermal properties and poor dispersibility, calls for the development of advanced nanomaterials to overcome such limitations. Commonly, carbon nanomaterials were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), laser ablation or arc discharge methods. The advancement in these techniques yielded monodispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and allows p-type and n-type doping to enhance its electrical and catalytic activities. The functionalized CNTs showed exceptional mechanical, electrical and thermal conductivity (3500-5000 W/mK) properties. On the other hand, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) exhibit strong photoluminescence properties with high quantum yield. Carbon nanohorns are another fascinating type of nanomaterial that exhibit a unique structure with high surface area and excellent adsorption properties. These carbon nanomaterials could improve waste management by adsorbing pollutants from water and soil, enabling precise environmental monitoring, while enhancing wastewater treatment and drug delivery systems. Herein, we have discussed the potentials of all these carbon nanomaterials in the context of innovative waste management solutions, fostering cleaner environments and healthier ecosystems for diverse biomedical applications such as biosensing, drug delivery, and environmental monitoring.

Engineering biomimetic scaffolds for bone regeneration: Chitosan/alginate/polyvinyl alcohol-based double-network hydrogels with carbon nanomaterials

In this study, new types of hybrid double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CH), and sodium alginate (SA) are introduced, with the hypothesis that this combination and incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) will enhance osteogenetic differentiation and the structural and mechanical properties of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. Initially, the impact of varying mass ratios of the PVA/CH/SA mixture on mechanical properties, swelling ratio, and degradability was examined. Based on this investigation, a mass ratio of 4:6:6 was determined to be optimal. At this ratio, the hydrogel demonstrated a Young's modulus of 47.5 ± 5 kPa, a swelling ratio of 680 ± 6 % after 3 h, and a degradation rate of 46.5 ± 5 % after 40 days. In the next phase, following the determination of the optimal mass ratio, CNTs and GNPs were incorporated into the 4:6:6 composite resulting in a significant enhancement in the electrical conductivity and stiffness of the scaffolds. The introduction of CNTs led to a notable increase of 36 % in the viability of MG63 osteoblast cells. Additionally, the inhibition zone test revealed that GNPs and CNTs increased the diameter of the inhibition zone by 49.6 % and 52.6 %, respectively.

Deep eutectic solvent (TMAH·5H2O/Urea) with low viscosity for cellulose dissolution at room temperature

A deep eutectic solvent (DES) formulated with tetramethylammonium hydroxide pentahydrate /urea (TMAH·5H2O/Urea) was designed for the first time to dissolve cellulose at room temperature. The optimized system, characterized by a 1:3 M ratio, demonstrates the capability to dissolve approximately 7.5 wt% cellulose, boasting a high degree of polymerization (DP = 526). Notably, both the pure DES and 4.0 wt% cellulose/TMAH·5H2O/Urea mixtures manifests low viscosity, establishing its potential as an effective spinning aid in fiber manufacturing. The structural analyses shows that the cellulose crystal type shifts from type I to type II form, accompanied by a reduction in both crystallinity and DP. A pivotal aspect of this research involves determining Kamlet-Taft parameters for TMAH·5H2O/Urea-DES with different molar ratios. The results reveal these solvate DESs exhibit the high hydrogen bond basicity, which enables them to easily form hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups of cellulose and demonstrate good cellulose solubility. In conclusion, this solvent system presents notable advantages, including straightforward synthesis procedures, low viscosity, and well cellulose solubility, paving the way for new approaches and techniques in cellulose utilization.

Advancements of gene therapy in cancer treatment: A comprehensive review

Cancer is the main contributor for mortality in the world. Conventional therapy that available as the treatment options are chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. However, these treatments are hardly cell-specific most of the time. Nowadays, extensive research and investigations are made to develop cell-specific approaches prior to cancer treatment. Some of them are photodynamic therapy, hyperthermia, immunotherapy, stem cell transplantation and targeted therapy. This review article will be focusing on the development of gene therapy in cancer. The objective of gene therapy is to correct specific mutant genes causing the excessive proliferation of the cell that leads to cancer. There are lots of explorations in the approach to modify the gene. The delivery of this therapy plays a big role in its success. If the inserted gene does not find its way to the target, the therapy is considered a failure. Hence, vectors are needed and the common vectors used are viral, non viral or synthetic, polymer based and lipid based vectors. The advancement of gene therapy in cancer treatment will be focussing on the top three cancer cases in the world which are breast, lung and colon cancer. In breast cancer, the discussed therapy are CRISPR/Cas9, siRNA and gene silencing whereas in colon cancer miRNA and suicide gene therapy and in lung cancer, replacement of tumor suppressor gene, CRISPR/Cas9 and miRNA.

Injectable chitosan-polyvinylpyrrolidone composite thermosensitive hydrogels with sustained submucosal lifting for endoscopic submucosal dissection

To develop a submucosal injection material with sustained submucosal lifting for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), this study designed and prepared a novel composite thermosensitive hydrogel system with high pH chitosan-polyvinylpyrrolidone-β-glycerophosphate (HpHCS-PVP-GP). HpHCS improved the injectability of the hydrogels and retained the rapid gelation ability at low concentrations. The modification of PVP significantly improved the stability of low-temperature hydrogel precursor solutions and the integrity of hydrogels formed at 37 °C through hydrogen bonds between PVP and HpHCS. A mathematical model was established using response surface methodology (RSM) to evaluate the synergistic effect of HpHCS, GP, and PVP concentrations on gelation time. This RSM model and submucosal lifting evaluation using in vitro pig esophageal models were used to determine the optimal formula of HpHCS-PVP-GP hydrogels. Although the higher PVP concentration (5 % (w/v)) prolonged gelation time, it improved hydrogel mechanical strength, resulting in better submucosal lifting performance. The experiments of Bama mini pigs showed that the heights of the cushions elevated by the HpHCS-5%PVP-GP hydrogel remained about 80 % 1 h after injection. Repeated injections were avoided, and the hydrogel had no cytotoxicity after electric cutting. Therefore, the HpHCS-PVP-GP thermosensitive hydrogel might be a promising submucosal injection material for ESD.

How surface modification of cellulose nanocrystals affects the crystallization process of poly (β-hydroxybutyrate)

Hydroxyl groups on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are modified by chemical methods, CNC and the modified CNC are used as fillers to prepare PHB/cellulose nanocomposites. The absorption peak of carbonyl group of the modified CNC (CNC-CL and CNC-LA) appears in the FT-IR spectra, which proves that the modifications are successful. Thermal stability of CNC-CL and CNC-LA is better than that of pure CNC. Pure CNC is beneficial to the nucleation of PHB, while CNC-CL and CNC-LA inhibit the nucleation of PHB. The spherulite size of PHB and its nanocomposites increases linearly over time, and the maximum growth rate of PHB spherulite exists at 90 °C. Rheological analysis shows that viscous deformation plays the dominant role in PHB, PHBC and PHBC-CL samples, while the elastic deformation is dominant in PHBC-LA. According to the rheological data, the dispersion of CNC-CL and CNC-LA in PHB is better than that of CNC. This work demonstrates the impact of modified CNC on the crystallization and viscoelastic properties of PHB. Moreover, the interface enhancement effect of modified CNC on PHB/CNC nanomaterials is revealed from the crystallization and rheology perspectives.

An overview of magnesium-based implants in orthopaedics and a prospect of its application in spine fusion

Due to matching biomechanical properties and significant biological activity, Mg-based implants present great potential in orthopedic applications. In recent years, the biocompatibility and therapeutic effect of magnesium-based implants have been widely investigated in trauma repair. In contrast, the R&D work of Mg-based implants in spinal fusion is still limited. This review firstly introduced the general background for Mg-based implants. Secondly, the mechanical properties and degradation behaviors of Mg and its traditional and novel alloys were reviewed. Then, different surface modification techniques of Mg-based implants were described. Thirdly, this review comprehensively summarized the biological pathways of Mg degradation to promote bone formation in neuro-musculoskeletal circuit, angiogenesis with H-type vessel formation, osteogenesis with osteoblasts activation and chondrocyte ossification as an integrated system. Fourthly, this review followed the translation process of Mg-based implants via updating the preclinical studies in fracture fixation, sports trauma repair and reconstruction, and bone distraction for large bone defect. Furthermore, the pilot clinical studies were involved to demonstrate the reliable clinical safety and satisfactory bioactive effects of Mg-based implants in bone formation. Finally, this review introduced the background of spine fusion surgeryand the challenges of biological matching cage development. At last, this review prospected the translation potential of a hybrid Mg-PEEK spine fusion cage design.

Alternative sequential combinations of electrocoagulation with electrooxidation and peroxi-coagulation for effective treatment of adhesive production industry wastewater

Adhesive production industry wastewater can be characterized by high chemical oxygen demand (COD) sourced from high refractory organic contaminants and high total suspended solids (TSS) concentration. Biodegradability of the wastewater is low and wastewater quality is unstable. Various treatment processes have limited applicability in such characterized wastewater. In this study, the treatment performance of electrochemical processes was investigated. Because it is not possible to meet the discharge standards by application of only one process for high refractory organic content, sequential electrochemical processes were studied in this work. In the first step of the sequential process, electrocoagulation (EC) using Al electrodes by which better performance was achieved was applied. In the second step, electrooxidation (EO) and peroxi-coagulation (PC) processes were applied to the EC effluent. In EO, Ti/MMO was selected as the most effective anode whereas in PC, Fe was used as the anode, and graphite was used as the cathode. Box-Behnken Design was applied to optimize the operating conditions of EO and PC processes and to obtain mathematical model equations. In the EC process, 77% COD, 78.5% TSS, and 85% UV254 removal efficiency were obtained under the optimum conditions (pH 7.2, reaction time 35 min, and current density 0.5 mA/cm2). With the EO and PC processes applied to the effluent of EC, 68.5% COD, 77% TSS, and 83% UV254 removal and 77.5% COD, 87% TSS, and 86.5% UV254 removal were obtained, respectively. The specific energy consumption of EC-EO and EC-PC processes was 16.08 kWh/kg COD and 15.06 kWh/kg COD, respectively. Considering the treatment targets and process operating costs, it was concluded that both sequential electrochemical systems could be promising alternative systems for the treatment of adhesive production industry wastewater.

Strategies for preparation of chitosan based water-soluble fluorescent probes to detect Cr3+ and Cu2+ ions

The low solubility of chitosan (CS) imposes adverse effects on its application. In this work, one of the aims is to improve the water solubility of CS. By introducing water-soluble side chains to CS, this aim was achieved. Besides, fluorescent moieties were incorporated into the side chains, the fluorescent copolymers were endowed with Cr3+ and Cu2+ ions recognition ability. Firstly, a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) reagent with naphthalimide units and CC groups was prepared. Water-soluble monomer methyl acrylic acid (MAA) was employed in the RAFT polymerization. Thus, water-soluble polymer with fluorescent unit and -C ≡ C on both ends of the polymer was obtained. They were introduced into CS, and the CS-based fluorescent copolymers were obtained eventually. The amount of MAA introduced could be tuned to obtain three side chains of different lengths. It was found that the more MAA was introduced, the better the solubility of CS-TP was. The detection limits (LOD) of Cr3+ and Cu2+ were 44.6 nM and 54.5 nM, respectively. The detection of Cr3+ and Cu2+ ions is further combined with a mobile APP to realize real-time, portable, and visual detection. And the application in the logic gate, a new detection platform, is prepared.

Illuminating the nanostructure of diffuse interfaces: Recent advances and future directions in reflectometry techniques

Diffuse soft matter interfaces take many forms, from end-tethered polymer brushes or adsorbed surfactants to self-assembled layers of lipids. These interfaces play crucial roles across a multitude of fields, including materials science, biophysics, and nanotechnology. Understanding the nanostructure and properties of these interfaces is fundamental for optimising their performance and designing novel functional materials. In recent years, reflectometry techniques, in particular neutron reflectometry, have emerged as powerful tools for elucidating the intricate nanostructure of soft matter interfaces with remarkable precision and depth. This review provides an overview of selected recent developments in reflectometry and their applications for illuminating the nanostructure of diffuse interfaces. We explore various principles and methods of neutron and X-ray reflectometry, as well as ellipsometry, and discuss advances in their experimental setups and data analysis approaches. Improvements to experimental neutron reflectometry methods have enabled greater time resolution in kinetic measurements and elucidation of diffuse structure under shear or confinement, while innovation in analysis protocols has significantly reduced data processing times, facilitated co-refinement of reflectometry data from multiple instruments and provided greater-than-ever confidence in proposed structural models. Furthermore, we highlight some significant research findings enabled by these techniques, revealing the organisation, dynamics, and interfacial phenomena at the nanoscale. We also discuss future directions and potential advancements in reflectometry techniques. By shedding light on the nanostructure of diffuse interfaces, reflectometry techniques enable the rational design and tailoring of interfaces with enhanced properties and functionalities.

Cyclodextrin-modified PVDF membranes with improved anti-fouling performance

The design of hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with anti-fouling properties has been explored for decades. Surface modification and blending are typical strategies to tailor the hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes. Herein, cyclodextrin was used to improve the antifouling performance of PVDF membranes. Cyclodextrin-modified PVDF membranes were prepared by coupling PVDF amination (blending with branched polyethyleneimine) and activated cyclodextrin grafting. The blending of PEI in the PVDF casting solution preliminarily aminated the PVDF, resulting in PEI-crosslinked/grafted PVDF membranes after phase inversion. Aldehydes groups on cyclodextrin, introduced by oxidation, endow cyclodextrin to be grafted on the aminated PVDF membrane by the formation of imines. Borch reduction performed on the activated cyclodextrin-grafted PVDF membrane converted the imine bonds to secondary amines, ensuring the membrane stability. The resulting membranes possess excellent antifouling performance, with a lower protein adsorption capacity (5.7 μg/cm2, indicated by Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA)), and a higher water flux recovery rate (FRR = 96%). The proposed method provides a facial strategy to prepare anti-fouling PVDF membranes.
