Mechanisms and individuality in chromium toxicity in humans

Sunlight-Driven Direct/Mediated Electron Transfer for Cr(VI) Reductive Sequestration on Dissolved Black Carbon-Ferrihydrite Coprecipitates

Surface runoff horizontally distributed chromium (Cr) pollution into various surface environments. Sunlight is a vital factor for the Cr cycle in the surface environment, which may be affected by photoactive substances such as ferrihydrite (Fh) and dissolved black carbon (DBC). Herein, sunlight-driven transformation dynamics of Cr species on DBC-Fh coprecipitates were studied. Under sunlight, the removal of aqueous Cr(VI) by DBC-Fh coprecipitates occurred through sunlight-driven reductive sequestration including adsorption, followed by surface reduction (pathway 1) and aqueous reduction, followed by precipitation (pathway 2). Additionally, coprecipitates with a higher DBC content exhibited a more effective reduction of both adsorbed (kapp,S_red) and aqueous Cr(VI) (kapp,A_red). Photoelectrons facilitated Cr(VI) reduction through direct electron transfer; notably, electron donating DBC promoted the production of photoelectrons by consuming photogenerated holes. Photogenerated Fe(II) species (mineral-phase and aqueous Fe(II)) mediated electron transfer for Cr(VI) reduction, which was reinforced via a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process between DBC-organic ligands and mineral Fe(III). Furthermore, ·O2- also mediated Cr(VI) reduction, although this impact was limited. Overall, this study demonstrates that photoelectrons and photogenerated electron mediators play a crucial role in Cr(VI) reductive sequestration on DBC-Fh coprecipitates, providing new insights into the geochemical cycle of Cr pollution in sunlight-influenced surface environments.

The combined effects of bisphenol S and hexavalent chromium on alpha-glucosidase: Intermolecular interaction, structural and functional changes

The co-contamination of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants has posed a threat to human health. Herein, this study investigated the intermolecular interactions of bisphenol S (BPS) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) under both individual and coexisting conditions, with alpha-glucosidase (AG), a key enzyme in carbohydrate metabolism, and the corresponding effects on the structure and function of AG. Multiple spectroscopic and molecular docking methods were employed to conduct the investigation in vitro and in silico. The results indicated that both BPS and Cr(VI) quenched the fluorescence of AG via a combined static and dynamic quenching processes. At 310 K, the binding constants of AG with BPS in the AG-BPS and (AG-Cr(VI))-BPS systems were 1.84 × 104 and 2.03 × 104 L mol-1, and the binding constants of AG with Cr(VI) in the AG-Cr(VI) and (AG-BPS)-Cr(VI) systems were 6.14 × 103 and 4.35 × 103 L mol-1. Cr(VI) could significantly affect the binding site of BPS in AG, while BPS had a minimal impact on the binding site of Cr(VI) in AG. BPS and Cr(VI) caused varied structural alterations of AG, and the impact of their coexistence on the structure of AG was related to the order in which they were added. Both BPS and Cr(VI) had a concentration-related effect on AG activity. This study provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the combined toxic effects of BPS and Cr(VI) on AG, highlighting the potential health risks associated with their environmental co-exposure.

Novel mechanistic insights into Cr(VI) and Cr(III) induced discrepancies of cellular toxicity and oxidative injury events in Eisenia fetida

Chromium (Cr) poses a high ecological risk, however the toxic mechanisms of Cr in different valence states to soil organisms at cellular and molecular levels are not exactly. In this study, the Eisenia fetida coelomocytes and Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) were chosen as the target subjects to investigate the effects and mechanisms of cellular toxicity induced by Cr(VI) and Cr(III). Results indicated that Cr(VI) and Cr(III) significantly reduced the coelomocytes viability. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was markedly increased after Cr(VI) exposure, which finally reduced antioxidant defense abilities, and induced lipid peroxidation and cellular membrane damage in earthworm coelomocytes. However, Cr(III) induced lower levels of oxidative stress and cellular damage with respect to Cr(VI). From a molecular perspective, the binding of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) with Cu/Zn-SOD resulted in protein backbone loosening and reduced β-Sheet content. The Cu/Zn-SOD showed fluorescence enhancement with Cr(III), whereas Cr(VI) had no obvious effect. The activity of Cu/Zn-SOD continued to decrease with the exposure of Cr. Molecular docking indicated that Cr(III) interacted more readily with the active center of Cu/Zn-SOD. Our results illustrate that oxidative stress induced by Cr(VI) and Cr(III) plays an important role in the cytotoxic differences of Eisenia fetida coelomocytes and the binding of Cr with Cu/Zn-SOD can also affect the normal structures and functions of antioxidant defense-associated protein.

Ameliorative effect of aqueous avocado seed extract against chromium-induced oxidative stress and cellular damage in rabbit kidney

The accumulation of chromium in renal tissues promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to oxidative stress, genomic and cellular harm, and ultimately necrotic and apoptotic cell death induced by free radicals. Hence, the utilization of antioxidant phytochemicals becomes crucial for cellular defense against oxidative damage. This study endeavors to explore the potential protective effects of an aqueous avocado seed extract (ASE) on rabbit kidneys exposed to chromium-induced damage. Fifteen adult rabbits were distributed into three groups: Group 1 was kept as the control. The second and third groups received a daily dose of K2Cr2O7 (5 mg/kg) intraperitoneally for 2 weeks. While the third group was given an oral dose of ASE (400 mg/kg). In rabbits administered with Cr (VI), kidney homogenates showed a marked increase in Malondialdehyde (MDA) (69.3 ± 4.1 nmol/g) along with a decrease in glutathione (59 ± 5.8 nmol/mg) content and the activity superoxide dismutase (SOD) (0.5 ± 0.05 U/mg protein), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (16.7 ± 1.1 μmol/mg protein), and catalase (CAT) (73.8 ± 3.9 U/g protein) compared to the levels in control group. Also, the gene expression data for the enzymes SOD, GPx, and CAT dropped dramatically in kidney tissue following Cr (VI) injection. Additionally, Bowman's capsule and glomerulus showed degenerative alterations in the kidney's histopathology and immunohistochemistry. ASE treatment when administered along with Cr (VI) enhanced the activity and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes and improved histopathological conditions. The findings of this study unequivocally show that avocado seed extract, which is rich in phenolic derivatives, is a potent nephroprotective agent that inhibits nephrotoxicity induced by Cr (VI) in rabbits.

Blood chromium and lung function among Chinese young adults: A comprehensive analysis based on epidemiology and metabolomics

Chromium (Cr) exposure is associated with various respiratory system diseases, but there are limited studies investigating its impact on lung function in young adults. The Cr exposure-related metabolomic changes are not well elucidated. This study recruited 608 students from a university in Shandong Province, China in 2019. We used cohort design fitted with linear mixed-effects models to assess the association between blood Cr concentration and lung function. In addition, we performed metabolomic and lipidomic analyses of baseline serum samples (N = 582) using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Two-step statistical analysis (analysis of variance and mixed-linear effect model) was used to evaluate the effect of blood Cr exposure on metabolites. We found that blood Cr was associated with decreased lung function in young adults. Each 2-fold increase in blood Cr concentrations was significantly associated with decreased FEV1 and FVC by 35.26 mL (95 % CI: -60.75, -9.78) and 38.56 mL (95 % CI: -66.60, -10.51), respectively. In the metabolomics analysis, blood Cr exposure was significantly associated with 14 key metabolites. The changed metabolites were mainly enriched in six pathways including lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and cofactor vitamin metabolism. Blood Cr may affect lung function through oxidative stress and inflammation related pathways.

Investigation of the toxicity of Cr (VI) against cyanobacteria and the mechanism of tolerance of the cyanobacterial consortia: a quantum mechanical approach

Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is a heavy metal that is distributed globally and poses a significant threat to the environment through various mechanisms. It can react with soil and water, leading to severe environmental damage. In this study, the toxicity of Cr (VI) was investigated by analyzing two major cyanobacteria species, Nostoc commune and Anabaena variabilis, commonly found in soil along with their consortia. The findings revealed that the toxicity mechanisms of Cr (VI) differed in individual monocultures, with Cr (VI) competing with various components. However, when the cyanobacteria species were combined, i.e., in consortia, they demonstrated an impressive retention of their functioning even in Cr (VI) concentration at 10 ppm. The study also concluded that non-photochemical quenching played a critical role in minimizing Cr (VI) toxicity. Furthermore, the research examined the role of the S-cycle in the process. The quantum yield of electron flux revealed that the Cr (VI) was competing with Qa in A. variabilis and with Qb in N. commune, albeit the photosystem dysfunction is only visible in the latter. The mechanism seemed to be quantum tunneling alteration because of the Cr (VI) having different energized quantum wells. The consortia proved to be behaving in a better manner as compared to the control. Overall, this study reveals the mode of toxicity of Cr (VI) in these two important cyanobacterial strains as well as it also discusses the mechanism of tolerance of consortia against Cr (VI) toxicity.

Determination of chromium species in water using diphenylcarbazide with a sequential spectrophotometric discrete robotic analyser

There is an increasing need for fast and reliable analytical methods for the determination of chemical forms of elements in environmental samples. The interest in chromium is driven by the fact that its toxicity depends on its oxidation state. Although chromium (III) is essential for mammals to maintain their metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, chromium (VI) is toxic to humans. For chromium speciation, several costly analytical methods coupling separation methods with atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy have been developed. This article presents the online robotic discrete analyser procedure with the 1,5 diphenylcarbazide (DPC) method for the speciation of Cr (III) and Cr (VI). Cr (III) was determined by difference since it does not interfere with the reaction of Cr (VI)-DPC. Chromium (VI) and total chromium were characterised sequentially (after online oxidation of Cr (III) by Cerium (Ce (IV)). The calibration graphs were linear under experimental conditions up to 1 mg/L Cr (VI) and 2 mg/L total Cr with correlation coefficient R2, 0.9997 and 0.9999 respectively. At a signal-to-noise ratio of three, the detection limits were 0.004 mg/L Cr (VI) and 0.015 mg/L total Cr. Good agreement between the real values of certified reference materials and the chromium species content was obtained in this study. The method was precise with a percentage relative standard deviation of less than 2 for hexavalent chromium and total chromium. The t-stat demonstrates that there was no significant difference between the developed robotic discrete analyser method and the ICP-MS method. Except for effluent water, which had recoveries between 65 and 75 % in the assessment of the devised method's selectivity, the overall percentage of recoveries fell between 90 and 110 %, which was generally satisfactory. This method proved to be appropriate for its intended use.

Exposure of the general French population to metals and metalloids in 2014-2016: Results from the Esteban study

BACKGROUND

The purpose of the Esteban study was to describe levels of various biomarkers of exposure to several environmental pollutants, including metals and metalloids, among the French population. This paper describes the distribution of concentrations of 28 metals and metalloids in two different populations, and estimates the main determinants of exposure to total arsenic, the sum of inorganic arsenic (iAs) and its two metabolites monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury and nickel.

METHODS

Esteban is a cross-sectional study conducted between 2014 and 2016 on a random sample of 2503 adults (18-74 years old) and 1104 children (6-17 years old) from the general population. The data collected included biological samples (blood, hair, and urines), socio-demographic characteristics, environmental and occupational exposure, and information on dietary factors and lifestyle. The geometric mean and percentiles of the distribution were estimated for each metal. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify the determinants of exposure using a generalized linear model.

RESULTS

Only four metals had a quantification rate below 90% in adults (beryllium, iridium, palladium, and platinum), and three metals in children (beryllium, iridium, and platinum). The concentrations of total arsenic, cadmium, chromium and mercury were higher than those found in most international studies. The determinants significantly associated with exposure were mainly diet and smoking.

CONCLUSIONS

Esteban provided a nationwide description of 28 metal and metalloid exposure levels for adults (some never measured before) and for the first time in children. The study results highlighted widespread exposure to several metals and metalloids. These results could be used to advocate public health decisions for continued efforts to reduce harmful exposure to toxic metals. The Reference values (RV95) built from Esteban could also be used to support future government strategies.

Chromium levels in placental tissue and neural tube defects: Association and mechanistic study

Human exposure to chromium (Cr) is common but little is known about its adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to explore the association between Cr exposure and the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) and the underlying mechanisms of Cr-induced NTDs. 593 controls and 408 NTD cases with placentas were included in this study. Chromium trichloride (Cr(III)) and potassium dichromate (Cr(VI)) were intragastrically administered to pregnant mice and the number of NTDs was recorded. The odds ratio for total NTDs in the highest exposure group in placenta was 4.18 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.97-8.84). The incidence of fetal NTDs in mice administered with Cr(III) showed a dose-response relationship. Cr(VI) didn't show teratogenicity of NTDs whereas increased the stillbirth rate. Prenatal exposure to Cr(III) increased levels of oxidative stress and apoptosis in fetal mice. RNA-sequencing results indicated significant enrichment of the MAPK pathway. RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis revealed that Cr(III) induced increased expression of p-JNK, p-P38, and Casp3. Toxicological effects can be partly antagonized by antioxidant supplementation. High chromium exposure was associated with increased human NTD risks. Excessive Cr(III) exposure can induce NTDs in fetal mice by increasing apoptosis through upgrading oxidative stress and then activating JNK/P38 MAPK signaling pathway.

Evaluating the Impact of Airborne Fine Particulate Matter and Heavy Metals on Oxidative Stress via Vitamin Supplementation

This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the interrelationships between PM2.5 exposure, heavy metal concentrations, and oxidative stress indicators, while evaluating the impact of antioxidant intake, such as vitamins, on these associations. PM2.5 exposure assessments were conducted using portable sensor-based monitors; biomarker analyses for heavy metals and oxidative stress were performed in 114 non-smoking adults. We observed that personal or ambient PM2.5 exposure levels were not associated with increased levels of heavy metals in blood and urine, nor with oxidative stress levels in urine. However, the concentrations of cadmium and lead in blood, and those of chromium and nickel in urine, were significantly associated with the urinary malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. Additionally, increases in blood cadmium, urinary chromium, and nickel levels were significantly associated with higher urinary MDA concentrations in the non-vitamin-supplement group, but this trend was not observed in the regular vitamin supplement group. Our findings suggest that a regular intake of vitamin supplements might modulate the relationship between heavy metal exposure and oxidative stress, indicating potential protective effects against oxidative damage induced by PM2.5 and heavy metals. This study highlights the complexity of environmental pollutant exposure and its impact on human health, emphasizing the need for further research to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and explore potential protective strategies.

Unveiling the biointerfaces characteristics and removal pathways of Cr(Ⅵ) in Bacillus cereus FNXJ1-2-3 for the Cr(Ⅵ)-to-Cr(0) conversion

Although less toxic than hexavalent chromium, Cr (Ⅲ) species still pose a threat to human health. The Cr (Ⅵ) should be converted to Cr (0) instead of Cr (Ⅲ), which is still involved in biological detoxification filed. Herein, for the first time, it was found that Cr(Ⅵ) can be reduced into Cr(0) by Bacillus cereus FNXJ1-2-3, a way to completely harmless treatment of Cr(Ⅵ). The bacterial strain exhibited excellent performance in the reduction, sorption, and accumulation of Cr(Ⅵ) and Cr (Ⅲ). XPS etching characterization inferred that the transformation of Cr(Ⅵ) into Cr(0) followed a reduction pathway of Cr(Ⅵ)→Cr (Ⅲ)→metallic Cr(0), in which at least two secretory chromium reductases (ECrⅥ→Ⅲ and ECrⅢ→0) worked. Under the optimum condition, the yield ratio of Cr(0)/Cr (Ⅲ) reached 33.90%. In addition, the interfacial interactions, ion channels, chromium reductases, and external electron donors also contributed to the Cr(Ⅵ)/Cr(0) transformation. Findings of this study indicate that Bacillus cereus FNXJ1-2-3 is a promising bioremediation agent for Cr(Ⅵ) pollution control.

Prosthetic Metals: Release, Metabolism and Toxicity

The development of metallic joint prostheses has been ongoing for more than a century alongside advancements in hip and knee arthroplasty. Among the materials utilized, the Cobalt-Chromium-Molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) and Titanium-Aluminum-Vanadium (Ti-Al-V) alloys are predominant in joint prosthesis construction, predominantly due to their commendable biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance. Nonetheless, over time, the physical wear, electrochemical corrosion, and inflammation induced by these alloys that occur post-implantation can cause the release of various metallic components. The released metals can then flow and metabolize in vivo, subsequently causing potential local or systemic harm. This review first details joint prosthesis development and acknowledges the release of prosthetic metals. Second, we outline the metallic concentration, biodistribution, and elimination pathways of the released prosthetic metals. Lastly, we discuss the possible organ, cellular, critical biomolecules, and significant signaling pathway toxicities and adverse effects that arise from exposure to these metals.

Towards prolonging ovarian reproductive life: Insights into trace elements homeostasis

Ovarian aging is marked by a reduction in the quantity and quality of ovarian follicles, leading to a decline in female fertility and ovarian endocrine function. While the biological characteristics of ovarian aging are well-established, the exact mechanisms underlying this process remain elusive. Recent studies underscore the vital role of trace elements (TEs) in maintaining ovarian function. Imbalances in TEs can lead to ovarian aging, characterized by reduced enzyme activity, hormonal imbalances, ovulatory disorders, and decreased fertility. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between systemic and cellular TEs balance and ovarian aging is critical for developing treatments to delay aging and manage age-related conditions. This review consolidates current insights into TEs homeostasis and its impact on ovarian aging, assesses how altered TEs metabolism affects ovarian aging, and suggests future research directions to prolong ovarian reproductive life. These studies are expected to offer novel approaches for mitigating ovarian aging.

Systematic literature review of heavy metal contamination of the Nigerian environment from e-waste management: Associated health and carcinogenic risk assessment

E-waste -the aftermath of large amount of electrical and electronic equipment ferried into Africa from which Nigeria receives a significant chunk, is composed of components known to be hazardous to health. Composition of series of heavy metals (HMs) in e-waste is traceable to many health conditions including cancer which is hitherto incompletely understood. This study harmonizes primary data on HMs from e-waste in different Nigerian environmental media including the air, soil, surface dust, water and plant. We estimated the possible health implications, single and aggregative soil and water pollution indices both in adult and children categories, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks secondary to HM exposure and mapped out the possible mechanism of carcinogenesis. Analysis showed that soil, water, surface dust and plant matrices in Nigerian environment are variedly but considerably contaminated with combination of HMs. The significantly high values of the hazard quotient and hazard index of both water and surface dust matrices are indicative of adverse health effect of the non-carcinogenic risk. The highest HQ is generated by Pb and Cr through dermal exposure to soil and surface dust with mean values of 1718.48, 1146.14, 1362.10 and 1794.61 respectively among Nigerian children followed by the oral exposure. This pattern of observation is similar to that obtained for adult category. HI due to Pb and Cr in soil constitutes the highest HI (2.05E+03 and 1.18E+03 respectively) followed by surface dust. However, this study precipitates the observation that children are more at health risk than adults in contaminated environment. Carcinogenic risk also follows the same pattern of expression in the Nigerian environment. We conclude that exposure to e-waste poses significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks and the induction of toxicity may be mediated via DNA damage, oxidative stress and inflammatory/immune cells dysfunction in Nigerian environment.

Bioreduction of chromate in a syngas-based membrane biofilm reactor

This study leveraged synthesis gas (syngas), a renewable resource attainable through the gasification of biowaste, to achieve efficient chromate removal from water. To enhance syngas transfer efficiency, a membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) was employed. Long-term reactor operation showed a stable and high-level chromate removal efficiency > 95%, yielding harmless Cr(III) precipitates, as visualised by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Corresponding to the short hydraulic retention time of 0.25 days, a high chromate removal rate of 80 µmol/L/d was attained. In addition to chromate reduction, in situ production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) by gas fermentation was observed. Three sets of in situ batch tests and two groups of ex situ batch tests jointly unravelled the mechanisms, showing that biological chromate reduction was primarily driven by VFAs produced from in situ syngas fermentation, whereas hydrogen originally present in the syngas played a minor role. 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing has confirmed the enrichment of syngas-fermenting bacteria (such as Sporomusa), who performed in situ gas fermentation leading to the synthesis of VFAs, and organics-utilising bacteria (such as Aquitalea), who utilised VFAs to drive chromate reduction. These findings, combined with batch assays, elucidate the pathways orchestrating synergistic interactions between fermentative microbial cohorts and chromate-reducing microorganisms. The findings facilitate the development of cost-effective strategies for groundwater and drinking water remediation and present an alternative application scenario for syngas.

A comparative study on chromium-induced micronuclei assessment in the peripheral blood of Hsd:ICR mice

This study investigated the genotoxic effects of chromium (Cr) in Hsd:ICR mice, considering factors such as oxidative state, apoptosis, exposure pathway, duration, pregnancy, and transplacental exposure. Genotoxicity was assessed using the erythrocytes' micronucleus (MN) assay, while apoptosis was evaluated in nucleated blood cells. The results showed that Cr(III) (CrK(SO4 )2 and CrCl3 ) did not induce any marked genotoxic damage. However, Cr(VI) (CrO3 , K2 Cr2 O7 , Na2 Cr2 O7 , and K2 CrO4 ) produced varying degrees of genotoxicity, with CrO3 being the most potent. MN frequencies increased following 24-h exposure, with a greater effect in male mice. Administering 20 mg/kg of CrO3 via gavage did not lead to significant effects compared to intraperitoneal administration. Short-term oral treatment with a daily dose of 8.5 mg/kg for 49 days elevated MN levels only on day 14 after treatment. Pregnant female mice exposed to CrO3 on day 15 of pregnancy exhibited reduced genotoxic effects compared to nonpregnant animals. However, significant increases in MN levels were found in their fetuses starting 48 h after exposure. In summary, data indicate the potential genotoxic effects of Cr, with Cr(VI) forms inducing higher genotoxicity than Cr(III). These findings indicate that gender, exposure route, and pregnancy status might influence genotoxic responses to Cr.

Multi-element analysis of food dyes and assessment of consumer's health

The present study assessed metallic contaminants levels in food colourings using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in 51 samples of food dyes marketed in Algeria. The analysed samples were contaminated with lead (0.77 ± 0.034), arsenic (0.008 ± 0.006), cadmium (0.102 ± 0.047), cobalt (0.017 ± 0.008), copper (0.025 ± 0.011), chromium (0.820 ± 0.051), and nickel (0.022 ± 0.009) µg g-1. Mercury constituted a minor contaminant (<0.001 to 0.002 µg g-1). Turmeric and saffron were the most contaminated with Pb, As, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, and Ni (p < 0.05). Health risk assessment revealed that infant population presents adverse non-carcinogenic effects (THQ = 4.25) and carcinogenic risk (HI = 4.65) linked to the consumption of food dyes contaminated with Cr.

Heavy Metal Bioaccumulation in Peruvian Food and Medicinal Products

To better query regional sources of metal(loid) exposure in an under-communicated region, available scientific literature from 50 national universities (undergraduate and graduate theses and dissertations), peer-reviewed journals, and reports published in Spanish and English were synthesized with a focus on metal(loid) bioaccumulation in Peruvian food and medicinal products utilized locally. The study considered 16 metal(loid)s that are known to exert toxic impacts on humans (Hg, Al, Sb, As, Ba, Be, Cd, Cr, Sn, Ni, Ag, Pb, Se, Tl, Ti, and U). A total of 1907 individual analyses contained within 231 scientific publications largely conducted by Peruvian universities were analyzed. These analyses encompassed 239 reported species classified into five main food/medicinal groups-plants, fish, macroinvertebrates and mollusks, mammals, and "others" category. Our benchmark for comparison was the World Health Organization (Codex Alimentarius) standards. The organisms most frequently investigated included plants such as asparagus, corn, cacao, and rice; fish varieties like trout, tuna, and catfish; macroinvertebrates and mollusks including crab and shrimp; mammals such as alpaca, cow, chicken eggs, and milk; and other categories represented by propolis, honey, lichen, and edible frog. Bioaccumulation-related research increased from 2 to more than 25 publications per year between 2006 and 2022. The results indicate that Peruvian food and natural medicinal products can have dangerous levels of metal(loid)s, which can cause health problems for consumers. Many common and uncommon food/medicinal products and harmful metals identified in this analysis are not regulated on the WHO's advisory lists, suggesting the urgent need for stronger regulations to ensure public safety. In general, Cd and Pb are the metals that violated WHO standards the most, although commonly non-WHO regulated metals such as Hg, Al, As, Cr, and Ni are also a concern. Metal concentrations found in Peru are on many occasions much higher than what has been reported elsewhere. We conclude that determining the safety of food/medicinal products is challenging due to varying metal concentrations that are influenced not only by metal type but also geographical location. Given the scarcity of research findings in many regions of Peru, urgent attention is required to address this critical knowledge gap and implement effective regulatory measures to protect public health.

Hazardous or Advantageous: Uncovering the Roles of Heavy Metals and Humic Substances in Shilajit (Phyto-mineral) with Emphasis on Heavy Metals Toxicity and Their Detoxification Mechanisms

Shilajit is a phyto-mineral diffusion and semi-solid matter used as traditional medicine with extraordinary health benefits. This study provides a comprehensive data on Shilajit with emphasis on heavy metal profile, associated toxicities, and metal detoxification mechanisms by humic substances present in Shilajit. Data was searched across papers and traditional books using Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, Medline, SciELO, Web of Science, and Scopus as key scientific databases. Findings showed that Shilajit is distributed in almost 20 regions of the world with uses against 20 health problems as traditional medicine. With various humic substances, almost 11 biological activities were reported in Shilajit. This phyto-mineral diffusion possesses around 65 heavy metals including the toxic heavy metals like Cu, Al, Pb, As, Cd, and Hg. However, humic substances in Shilajit actively detoxify around 12 heavy metals. The recommended levels of heavy metals by WHO and FDA in herbal drugs is 0.20 and 0.30 ppm for Cd, 1 ppm for Hg, 10.00 ppm for As and Pb, 20 ppm for Cu, and 50 ppm for Zn. The levels of reported metals in Shilajit were found to be lower than the permissible limits set by WHO and FDA, except in few studies where exceeded levels were reported. Shilajit consumption without knowing permissible levels of metals is not safe and could pose serious health problems. Although the humic substances and few metals in Shilajit are beneficial in terms of chelating toxic heavy metals, the data on metal detoxification still needs to be clarified.

Parameter Influence, Characterization and Adsorption Mechanism Studies of Alkaline-Hydrolyzed Garcinia kola Hull Particles for Cr(VI) Sequestration

Despite the regulations by The World Health Organization (WHO) on the permissible limit of chromium, many industries still discharge wastewater polluted with chromium into the environment irrationally. This poses a lot of risk to aquatic lives and humans because of its carcinogenic and toxic attributes. Thus, treatment of industrial wastewater polluted with chromium is highly imperative before its disposal. Nonetheless, the hulls generated from Garcinia kola in our various farmlands also causes environmental pollution when dumped unknowingly. In this present study, Garcinia kola hull particles (GK-HP) was hydrolyzed using NaOH and applied as adsorbent for Cr(VI) sequestration. The raw Garcinia kola hull particles (rGK-HP) and modified Garcinia kola hull particles (cMGK-HP) were characterized using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier-Transform-Infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and point of zero charge (pHpzc). The influence of pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, temperature and adsorbate initial concentration on Cr(VI) sequestration were examined. The cMGK-HP was able to remove 96.25% of Cr(VI) from solution and proved to be effective than rGK-HP. The amount of Cr(VI) removed from solution decreased as the pH and adsorbate initial concentration were increased. However, the amount increased as the adsorbent dose, contact time and temperature were increased. Change in morphological structure, textural property, spectral peak, phase composition and adsorbents chemical composition before and after Cr(VI) sequestration from solution were proved by SEM, BET, FTIR, XRD, and EDS analyses respectively. The isotherm and kinetic studies suggest Cr(VI) adsorption on adsorbents' surface to be monolayer in nature and adsorption data to be well-fitted into pseudo second order model respectively. The cMGK-HP possessed excellent reusability attribute and high thermal stability as shown by TGA. In conclusion, cMGK-HP could effectively be used as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) sequestration from solution.

Selenium-molybdenum interactions reduce chromium toxicity in Nicotiana tabacum L. by promoting chromium chelation on the cell wall

Chromium (Cr) is a hazardous heavy metal that negatively affects animals and plants. The micronutrients selenium (Se) and molybdenum (Mo) have been widely shown to alleviate heavy metal toxicity in plants. However, the molecular mechanism of Cr chelation on the cell wall by combined treatment with Se and Mo has not been reported. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effects of Se-Mo interactions on the subcellular distribution of Cr (50 µM) and on cell wall composition, structure, functional groups and Cr content, in addition to performing a comprehensive analysis of the transcriptome. Our results showed that the cell walls of shoots and roots accumulated 51.0% and 65.0% of the Cr, respectively. Furthermore, pectin in the cell wall bound 69.5%/90.2% of the Cr in the shoots/roots. Se-Mo interactions upregulated the expression levels of related genes encoding galacturonosyltransferase (GAUT), UTP-glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase (UGP), and UDP-glucose-4-epimerase (GALE), involved in polysaccharide biosynthesis, thereby increasing pectin and cellulose levels. Moreover, combined treatment with Se and Mo increased the lignin content and cell wall thickness by upregulating the expression levels of genes encoding cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), peroxidase (POX) and phenylalanine amino-lyase (PAL), involved in lignin biosynthesis. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results showed that Se + Mo treatment (in combination) increased the number of carboxylic acid groups (-COOH) groups, thereby enhancing the Cr chelation ability. The results not only elucidate the molecular mechanism of action of Se-Mo interactions in mitigating Cr toxicity but also provide new insights for phytoremediation and food safety.

Therapeutic and Diagnostic Agents based on Bioactive Endogenous and Exogenous Coordination Compounds

Metal-based coordination compounds have very special place in bioinorganic chemistry because of their different structural arrangements and significant application in medicine. Rapid progress in this field increasingly enables the targeted design and synthesis of metal-based pharmaceutical agents that fulfill valuable roles as diagnostic or therapeutic agents. Various coordination compounds have important biological functions, both those initially present in the body (endogenous) and those entering the organisms from the external environment (exogenous): vitamins, drugs, toxic substances, etc. In the therapeutic and diagnostic practice, both the essential for all living organisms and the trace metals are used in metal-containing coordination compounds. In the current review, the most important functional biologically active compounds were classified group by group according to the position of the elements in the periodic table.

Biomass derived green carbon dots for sensing applications of effective detection of metallic contaminants in the environment

The rapid consumption of metals and unorganized disposal have led to unprecedented increases in heavy metal ion concentrations in the ecosystem, which disrupts environmental homeostasis and results in agricultural biodiversity loss. Mitigation and remediation plans for heavy metal pollution are largely dependent on the discovery of cost-effective, biocompatible, specific, and robust detectors because conventional methods involve sophisticated electronics and sample preparation procedures. Carbon dots (CDs) have gained significant importance in sensing applications related to environmental sustainability. Fluorescence sensor applications have been enhanced by their distinctive spectral properties and the potential for developing efficient photonic devices. With the recent development of biomass-functionalized carbon dots, a wide spectrum of multivalent and bivalent transition metal ions responsible for water quality degradation can be detected with high efficiency and minimal toxicity. This review explores the various methods of manufacturing carbon dots and the biochemical mechanisms involved in metal detection using green carbon dots for sensing applications involving Cu (II), Fe (III), Hg (II), and Cr (VI) ions in aqueous systems. A detailed discussion of practical challenges and future recommendations is presented to identify feasible design routes.

An overview on the protective effects of ellagic acid against heavy metals, drugs, and chemicals

Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenol extracted from many plants. EA modulates inflammatory mediators via antioxidant mechanisms, such as catalase (CAT) activities, superoxide dismutase (SOD), enhancement, increase in glutathione (GSH), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) suppression. EA has anti-apoptotic properties that are thought to be mediated by regulating the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), and caspase-3. In this article, we surveyed the literature dealing with the protective effects of EA against different heavy metals, drugs, and natural toxins. The findings indicated that EA has remarkable protective properties against various toxicants. Its protective effects were mostly mediated via normalizing lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammatory mediators, for example, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-1β. The results of this study showed that EA has significant protective effects against a varied range of compounds, either chemical or natural. These effects are mainly mediated via intensifying the antioxidant defense system. However, other mechanisms such as inhibition of inflammatory responses and suppression of apoptosis are important.

High temperature gamma radiation-induced chromium redox chemistry via in situ spectroscopic measurements

Chromium ions can make their way into the primary coolant of nuclear power reactors from the corrosion of stainless-steel reactor components, decreasing the material's corrosion resistance and resulting in increased transport of further corrosion products. Despite these potential effects, the radiation-induced redox speciation of chromium ions in aqueous solution is not well understood, especially at the elevated temperatures experienced by reactor coolants. In the present work, we report new experimental results demonstrating that in aerated aqueous solution, the radiolytic oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) occurs at pH 4, while the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) occurs at pH 2. The oxidation of Cr(III) is primarily attributed to the reaction of the hydroxyl radical (˙OH) with the Cr(OH)2+ species, while the reduction of Cr(VI) is attributed to reactions involving the hydrated electron (eaq-) and hydrogen atom (H˙). Additionally, the steady-state equilibrium yield of Cr(VI) from the gamma irradiation of pH 4 Cr(III) solutions decreased with increasing temperature (over a range of 37-195 °C). This observation indicates that the activation energy of the Cr(VI) reduction reactions is higher than that for the Cr(III) oxidation reactions, such that it becomes relatively more favorable at higher temperatures. Overall, these data are important for the development of complementary multiscale models for the prediction of metal ion speciation in high temperature radiation environments.

Transition metals in angiogenesis - A narrative review

The aim of this paper is to offer a narrative review of the literature regarding the influence of transition metals on angiogenesis, excluding lanthanides and actinides. To our knowledge there are not any reviews up to date offering such a summary, which inclined us to write this paper. Angiogenesis describes the process of blood vessel formation, which is an essential requirement for human growth and development. When the complex interplay between pro- and antiangiogenic mediators falls out of balance, angiogenesis can quickly become harmful. As it is so fundamental, both its inhibition and enhancement take part in various diseases, making it a target for therapeutic treatments. Current methods come with limitations, therefore, novel agents are constantly being researched, with metal agents offering promising results. Various transition metals have already been investigated in-depth, with studies indicating both pro- and antiangiogenic properties, respectively. The transition metals are being applied in various formulations, such as nanoparticles, complexes, or scaffold materials. Albeit the increasing attention this field is receiving, there remain many unanswered questions, mostly regarding the molecular mechanisms behind the observed effects. Notably, approximately half of all the transition metals have not yet been investigated regarding potential angiogenic effects. Considering the promising results which have already been established, it should be of great interest to begin investigating the remaining elements whilst also further analyzing the established effects.

A review on chromium health hazards and molecular mechanism of chromium bioremediation

Living beings have been devastated by environmental pollution, which has reached its peak. The disastrous pollution of the environment is in large part due to industrial wastes containing toxic pollutants. The widespread use of chromium (Cr (III)/Cr (VI)) in industries, especially tanneries, makes it one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants. Chromium pollution is widespread due to ineffective treatment methods. Bioremediation of chromium (Cr) using bacteria is very thoughtful due to its eco-friendly and cost-effective outcome. In order to counter chromium toxicity, bacteria have numerous mechanisms, such as the ability to absorb, reduce, efflux, or accumulate the metal. In this review article, we focused on chromium toxicity on human and environmental health as well as its bioremediation mechanism.

Clinical Evaluation of Corrosion Resistance, Ion Release, and Biocompatibility of CoCr Alloy for Metal-Ceramic Restorations Produced by CAD/CAM Technologies

BACKGROUND

CAD/CAM technologies facilitate using powder CoCr alloys to produce metal-ceramic dental restorations. However, base alloys may induce oxidative stress in the oral cavity due to corrosion and ion release. This study evaluated resistance to corrosion and release of metal ions from 3D printed CoCr dental alloy and their effect on oral oxidative stress.

METHODS

Metal-ceramic crowns with 3D printed copings from CoCr alloy EOS CobaltChrome SP2 (EOS, Germany) were fabricated for 35 patients. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for measuring the concentration of Co and Cr ions in non-stimulated saliva before prosthetic treatment (BPT), at 2 h and 7 days after the dental treatment (APT2, APT7, respectively). Open circuit potentials (Eocp) were evaluated at APT2 and APT7. Estimating oral oxidative stress, measurements of 8-isoprostaglandin F2-alpha were conducted using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) at stages BPT, APT2, and APT7.

RESULTS

Salivary Co level increased at APT2 and decreased to the initial levels at APT7. No statistical difference was found between the levels of 8-isoPGF2-alpha measured, and between the Eocp measurements at APT2 and APT7.

CONCLUSIONS

The studied alloy showed stable corrosion resistance and the metal ion release did not induce oral oxidative stress.

Aquaculture sediments amended with biochar improved soil health and plant growth in a degraded soil

Sustainable and safe management of aquaculture sediments is of great concern. Biochar (BC) and fishpond sediments (FPS) are rich in organic carbon and nutrients and thus can be used as soil amendments; however, it is not fully explored how the biochar amended fishpond sediments can affect soil properties/fertility and modulate plant physiological and biochemical changes, particularly under contamination stress. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation was carried out to explore the effects of FPS and BC-treated FPS (BFPS) on soil and on spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) grown in chromium (Cr) contaminated soils. Addition of FPS and BFPS to soil caused an increase in nutrients content and reduced Cr levels in soil, which consequently resulted in a significant increase in plant biomass, chlorophyll pigments, and photosynthesis, over the control treatment. The most beneficial effect was observed with the BFPS applied at 35 %, which further increased the antioxidant enzymes (by 2.75-fold, at minimum), soluble sugars by 24.9 %, and upregulated the gene expression activities. However, the same treatment significantly decreased proline content by 74.9 %, Malondialdehyde by 65.6 %, H₂O₂ by 65.1 %, and Cr concentration in spinach root and shoot tissues. Moreover, the average daily intake analysis showed that BFPS (at 35 %) could effectively reduce human health risks associated with Cr consumption of leafy vegetables. In conclusion, these findings are necessary to provide guidelines for the reutilization of aquaculture sediments as an organic fertilizer and a soil amendment for polluted soils. However, more future field studies are necessary to provide guidelines and codes on aquaculture sediments reutilization as organic fertilizer and soil amendment for polluted soils, aiming for a more sustainable food system in China and globally, with extended benefits to the ecosystem and human.

Role of NF-κB signaling pathway in hexavalent chromium-induced hepatotoxicity

Hexavalent chromium Cr (VI) is a primary human carcinogen with damaging toxic effects on multiple organs. Cr (VI) exposure can induce hepatotoxicity through oxidative stress, but its exact mechanism of action was still unclear. In our study, a model of acute Cr (VI) induced liver injury was established by exposing mice to different concentrations (0, 40, 80, and 160 mg/kg) of Cr (VI); RNA-seq was used to characterize changes in liver tissue transcriptome of C57BL/6 mice after exposing to 160 mg/kg Bw of Cr (VI). Changes in liver tissue structures, proteins, and genes were observed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), western blot, immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. After Cr (VI) exposure, abnormal liver tissue structure, hepatocyte injury, and hepatic inflammatory response were observed in mice in a dose-dependent manner. RNA-seq transcriptome results indicated that oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammatory response pathways were increased after Cr (VI) exposure; KEGG pathway analysis found that activation of NF-κB signaling pathway was significantly upregulated. Consistent with the RNA-seq results, immunohistochemistry showed that Cr (VI) exposure resulted in infiltrating of Kupffer cells and neutrophils, increasing expression of inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β), and activating of NF-κB signaling pathways (p-IKKα/β and p-p65). However, ROS inhibitor, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), could reduce infiltration of Kupffer cells and neutrophils and expression of inflammatory factors. Besides, NAC could inhibit NF-κB signaling pathway activation, and alleviate Cr (VI)-induced liver tissue damage. Our findings strongly suggested that inhibition of ROS by NAC might help in the development of new strategies for Cr (VI)-associated liver fibrosis. Our findings revealed for the first time that Cr (VI) induced liver tissue damage through the inflammatory response mediated by the NF-κB signaling pathway, and inhibition of ROS by NAC might help in the development of new strategies for Cr (VI)-associated hepatotoxicity.

Photoreduction of Cr(VI) by TiO2 adsorbed gold nanoparticles and perylene as a novel organic-inorganic hybrid photocatalyst

The photoreduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) using TiO₂ adsorbed gold nanoparticles and perylene (Au/Pe/TiO₂) as a novel organic-inorganic hybrid photocatalyst has been studied. The irradiation by a Xe lamp of a Cr (VI) aqueous solution (0.1 mM) with the Au/Pe/TiO₂ powder resulted in the reduction of the Cr(VI). The rate of Cr(VI) reduction reached 98.3% by the irradiation for 60 min. The reaction rate constant using Au/Pe/TiO₂ (0.0545 min^-1) was higher than that of TiO₂ (0.0218 min^-1), Pe/TiO₂ (0.0303 min^-1), or Au/TiO₂ (0.0393 min^-1). Gold nanoparticles and perylene synergistically accelerated the TiO₂ photocatalytic reaction. This result is due to the Z-scheme electron transfer between Pe and TiO₂ and the suppression of charge recombination by the gold nanoparticles. The irradiation of sunlight also led to the photocatalytic reduction of the Cr(VI) by Au/Pe/TiO₂. In addition, successive reduction of the Cr(VI) was achieved by using a column packed with the Au/Pe/TiO₂ powder immobilized by calcium alginate gel.

Increasing soil Mn abundance promotes the dissolution and oxidation of Cr(III) and increases the accumulation of Cr in rice grains

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is more readily taken up by plants than trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) due to its similar chemical structure to phosphate and sulfate. In paddy soils, Cr(VI) of natural origin are mainly produced from Cr(III) oxidized by O2 and Mn(III/IV) oxides, which are affected by rice radial oxygen loss (ROL) and Mn(II)-oxidizing microorganisms (MOM). However, little is known about the effect of ROL and Mn abundance on rice Cr uptake. Here, we investigated the effects on Cr(VI) generation and the subsequent Cr uptake and accumulation with the involvement of two rice cultivars with distinct ROL capacities by increasing soil Mn abundance. Results showed that Mn(II) addition to the soil led to more Cr(III) being released into the pore water, and the dissolved Cr(III) was oxidized to Cr(VI) by ROL and biogenic Mn(III/IV) oxides. The concentration of Cr(VI) in soil and pore water increased linearly with the addition of Mn(II) doses. Mn(II) addition promoted the root-to-shoot translocation and grain accumulation of Cr derived mainly from newly generated Cr(VI) in the soil. These results emphasize that rice ROL and MOM promote the oxidative dissolution of Cr(III) at a high level of soil Mn, resulting in more Cr accumulation in rice grains and increasing dietary Cr exposure risks.

Biogeochemical behaviour and toxicology of chromium in the soil-water-human nexus: A review

Chromium (Cr) affects human health if it accumulates in organs to elevated concentrations. The toxicity risk of Cr in the ecosphere depends upon the dominant Cr species and their bioavailability in the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. However, the soil-water-human nexus that controls the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its potential toxicity is not fully understood. This paper synthesizes information on different dimensions of Cr ecotoxicological hazards in the soil and water and their subsequent effects on human health. The various routes of environmental exposure of Cr to humans and other organisms are also discussed. Human exposure to Cr(VI) causes both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects via complicated reactions that include oxidative stress, chromosomal and DNA damage, and mutagenesis. Chromium (VI) inhalation can cause lung cancer; however, incidences of other types of cancer following Cr(VI) exposure are low but probable. The non-carcinogenic health consequences of Cr(VI) exposure are primarily respiratory and cutaneous. Research on the biogeochemical behaviour of Cr and its toxicological hazards on human and other biological routes is therefore urgently needed to develop a holistic approach to understanding the soil-water-human nexus that controls the toxicological hazards of Cr and its detoxification.

Analysis of heavy metals and toxicity level in the tannery effluent and the environs

Heavy metals have found a large number of applications in the recent times. These heavy metals are being continuously added to our environment through various natural and anthropogenic activities. Industries employ heavy metals to process raw materials into final products. Effluents from these industries carry heavy metals. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer and ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer) are of great help in detecting various elements in the effluent. They have been extensively applied to solve problems related to environmental monitoring and assessment. Heavy metals like Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Cr can be easily detected using both the techniques. Some of these heavy metals are toxic to both humans and animals. They can have significant related health effects. Presence of heavy metals in the industrial effluent has gained varied attention in the recent times and it has become one of the major causes of water and soil pollution. Significant contributions can be linked with the leather tanning industry. As the effluent from the tanning industry has been found to contain a large number of heavy metals in many studies. Continuous monitoring and treatment of the effluent is necessary to keep a check on the concentration of heavy metals in these effluents. This study focuses on the analysis of the various studies available on tannery effluents, methods used for heavy metal analysis, toxicity of these heavy metals, and the related major health effects. Data for heavy metals in the tannery effluent from different studies in last two decades has been collected and analysed. The data from various studies indicates that Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, and Ni are the most commonly found heavy metals released from the tanning industry. Proper management of the tannery effluent is thus very essential for saving the environment.

Brassica juncea and the Se-hyperaccumulator Stanleya pinnata exhibit a different pattern of chromium and selenium accumulation and distribution while activating distinct oxidative stress-response signatures

Soils high in chromium and selenium exist in some countries, like China, India and the US. In the forms of chromate and selenate, these elements can compete during uptake by plants and lead to secondary effects on the absorption of the essential nutrient sulfur. In this study, we evaluated the potential of Brassica juncea and the Se-hyperaccumulator Stanleya pinnata to take-up and store chromium and selenium when applied individually or jointly, the effect on sulfur content, and the plant antioxidant responses. The aim is to advise the best use of these species in phytotechnologies. Plants were grown hydroponically with 50 μM chromate, 50 μM selenate and equimolar concentrations of both elements (50 μM chromate + 50 μM selenate). Our results suggest that B. juncea and S. pinnata possess transport systems with different affinity for chromate and selenate. The joint application of chromate and selenate restricted the accumulation of both elements, but the reduction of selenate uptake by chromate was more evident in B. juncea. On the other hand, selenate decreased chromium accumulation in B. juncea, whereas in S. pinnata such effect was evident only in roots. B. juncea plants stored more chromium and selenium than S. pinnata due to the higher biomass produced, but less selenium when treated with both elements. Chromate and selenate decreased sulfur accumulation in both species, but B. juncea was more sensitive to their toxicity when applied individually, as revealed by increased lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide content in roots and antioxidant enzyme activity. This species can still be efficient for chromium and selenium phytoextraction as these elements in soil are less available than in hydroponics. In soils high in both elements, or low in selenium, S. pinnata is preferred for selenium phytoextraction and the biomass could be used for crop biofortification due its negligible chromium content.

Effect of nanobiochar (nBC) on morpho-physio-biochemical responses of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) in Cr-spiked soil

Chromium is a highly toxic heavy metal. High concentrations of Cr (III) can affect metabolic processes in plants, resulting in different morphological, physiological, and biochemical defects. Agricultural practices such as sewage irrigation, over-fertilization, and sewage sludge application contribute significantly to Cr contamination. It can reduce the growth of plants by affecting the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The materials in nano form play an important role in nano-remediation and heavy metals absorption due to their high surface area and micropores. This research was conducted to study the potential of foliar application of nanobiochar/nBC (100 mg/L^-1 and 150 mg/L^-1) for mitigation of Cr (III) stress (200 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) in black cumin (Nigella sativa) plants. The results showed that increased Cr stress (300 mg/kg) decreased the plant growth parameters, chlorophyll content, total soluble sugars, and proteins. However, increased the level of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and malondialdehyde acetate (MDA) as a result of the activity of antioxidant enzymes (Catalase, Superoxide dismutase, peroxidase dismutase, and ascorbic peroxidase) increased in Nigella sativa seedlings. Foliar application of the nBC (100 mg/L^-1) increased plant growth parameters, chlorophyll content, and osmoprotectants, while decreasing the levels of oxidative stress markers (H₂O₂ and MDA). Furthermore, with the application of nBC, the antioxidant enzyme activity considerably improved. Improved antioxidant activity shows that nBC helped to decrease oxidative stress, which in return improved the growth of Nigella sativa seedlings. Overall, present study findings concluded that foliar application of nBC in Nigella sativa seedlings improved growth, chlorophyll, and antioxidant enzymes. The nBC treatment of 100 mg/L^-1 showed better results compared to 150 mg/L^-1 under chromium stress.

Physiological and transcriptomic evidence of antioxidative system and ion transport in chromium detoxification in germinating seedlings of soybean

Chromium (Cr) toxicity impairs the productivity of crops and is a major threat to food security worldwide. However, the effect of Cr toxicity on seed germination and transcriptome of germinating seedlings of soybean crop has not been fully explored. In this study, two Cr-tolerant lines (J82, S125) and two Cr-sensitive ones (LD1, RL) were screened out of twenty-one soybean (Glycine max L.) genotypes based on seed germination rate, seed germinative energy, seed germination index, and growth of germinating seedlings under 50 mg L^-1 Cr treatment. We found that Cr stress inhibits the growth of soybean seed germinating seedlings due to the Cr-induced overaccumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Significantly different levels of element contents, antioxidant enzyme activities, malondialdehyde content were observed in the four soybean genotypes with contrasting Cr tolerance. Further, a total of 13,777 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in transcriptomic sequencing and 1298 DEGs in six gene modules were found highly correlated with the physiological traits by weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) analysis. The DEGs encoding antioxidant enzymes, transcription factors, and ion transporters are proposed to confer Cr tolerance in soybean germinating seedlings by reducing the uptake and translocation of Cr, decreasing the level of ROS, and keeping the osmotic balance in soybean germinating seedings. In conclusion, our study provided a molecular regulation network on soybean Cr tolerance at seed germinating stage and identified candidate genes for molecular breeding of low Cr accumulation soybean cultivars.

Ni2P-Modified P-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride Hetero-Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalytic Aqueous Cr(VI) Reduction

Targeting heterostructures with modulated electronic structures and efficient charge carrier separation and mobility is an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic performance. In this study, we report the synthesis of 2D/3D hybrid heterostructures comprising P-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets (ca. 50–60 nm in lateral size) and small-sized Ni2P nanoparticles (ca. 10–12 nm in diameter) and demonstrate their prominent activity in the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). Utilizing a combination of spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization techniques, we unveil the reasons behind the distinct photochemical performance of these materials. We show that Ni2P modification and P doping of the g-C3N4 effectively improve the charge-carrier transportation and spatial separation through the interface of Ni2P/P-doped g-C3N4 junctions. As a result, the catalyst containing 15 wt.% Ni2P exhibits superior photocatalytic activity in the detoxification of Cr(VI)-contaminated effluents under UV-visible light illumination, presenting an apparent quantum yield (QY) of 12.5% at 410 nm, notably without the use of sacrificial additives. This study marks a forward step in understanding and fabricating cost-effective photocatalysts for photochemical applications.

Adverse Human Health Effects of Chromium by Exposure Route: A Comprehensive Review Based on Toxicogenomic Approach

Heavy metals are defined as metals with relatively high density and atomic weight, and their various applications have raised serious concerns about the environmental impacts and potential human health effects. Chromium is an important heavy metal that is involved in biological metabolism, but Cr exposure can induce a severe impact on occupational workers or public health. In this study, we explore the toxic effects of Cr exposure through three exposure routes: dermal contact, inhalation, and ingestion. We propose the underlying toxicity mechanisms of Cr exposure based on transcriptomic data and various bioinformatic tools. Our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity mechanisms of different Cr exposure routes by diverse bioinformatics analyses.

Resistance mechanisms and remediation potential of hexavalent chromium in Pseudomonas sp. strain AN-B15

The understanding of bacterial resistance to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] are crucial for the enhancement of Cr(VI)-polluted soil bioremediation. However, the mechanisms related to plant-associated bacteria remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigate the resistance mechanisms and remediation potential of Cr(VI) in a plant-associated strain, AN-B15. The results manifested that AN-B15 efficiently reduced Cr(VI) to soluble organo-Cr(III). Specifically, 84.3 % and 56.5 % of Cr(VI) was removed after 48 h in strain-inoculated solutions supplemented with 10 and 20 mg/L Cr(VI) concentrations, respectively. Transcriptome analyses revealed that multiple metabolic systems are responsible for Cr(VI) resistance at the transcriptional level. In response to Cr(VI) exposure, strain AN-B15 up-regulated the genes involved in central metabolism, providing the reducing power by which enzymes (ChrR and azoR) transformed Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the cytoplasm. Genes involved in the alleviation of oxidative stress and DNA repair were significantly up-regulated to neutralize Cr(VI)-induced toxicity. Additionally, genes involved in organosulfur metabolism and certain ion transporters were up-regulated to counteract the starvation of sulfur, molybdate, iron, and manganese induced by Cr(VI) stress. Furthermore, a hydroponic culture experiment showed that toxicity and uptake of Cr(VI) by plants under Cr(VI) stress were reduced by strain AN-B15. Specifically, strain AN-B15 inoculation increased the fresh weights of the wheat root and shoot by 55.5 % and 18.8 %, respectively, under Cr(VI) stress (5 mg/L). The elucidation of bacterial resistance to Cr(VI) has an important implication for exploiting microorganism for the effective remediation of Cr(VI)-polluted soils.

Biosorption of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution by pristine and CaCl2-modified erythromycin production residues

In this study, the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from aqueous solutions by the pristine and salt-treated (CaCl₂) erythromycin production residue (EPRs and SEPRs) were investigated. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the effect of contact time, sorbent dosage, pH, initial Cr concentration, and temperature on Cr(VI) sorption by EPRs and SEPRs. The highest adsorptive removal capacities were achieved at the pH equal to 1.0, and the maximum adsorption capacities for EPRs and SEPRs at optimized conditions were 21.74 and 35.24 mg g^-1, respectively. The FTIR spectra and SEM studies were examined for the pristine adsorbent and after the adsorption of Cr(VI). Moreover, thermodynamic results indicated that Cr sorption by EPR/SERPs was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic under the optimum conditions. Langmuir model fitted well with the experimental data. Kinetic modeling revealed that the biosorption of Cr(VI) by EPRs and SEPRs obeyed the second-order model than the first-order model. The process involving rate-controlling step is much complex involving both boundary layer and intra-particle diffusion processes. Furthermore, the adsorption-coupled-reduction process was believed as the main mechanism of Cr(VI) removal by EPRs and SEPRs. In summary, both adsorbents could be considered as promising low-cost biosorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous systems.

Selective Chromium(VI) Trapping by an Acetate-Releasing Coordination Polymer

We report the high-capacity and selective uptake of Cr(VI) from water using the coordination polymer silver bipyridine acetate (SBA, [Ag(4,4'-bipy)][CH₃CO₂]·3H₂O). Cr capture involves the release of acetate, and we have structurally characterized two of the product phases that form: silver bipyridine chromate (SBC, SLUG-56, [Ag(4,4'-bipy)][CrO₄]_0.5·3.5H₂O) and silver bipyridine dichromate (SBDC, SLUG-57, [Ag(4,4'-bipy)][Cr₂O₇]_0.5·H₂O). SBA maintains a high Cr uptake capacity over a wide range of pH values (2-10), reaching a maximum of 143 mg Cr/g at pH 4. This Cr uptake capacity is one of the highest among coordination polymers. SBA offers the additional benefits of a one-step, room temperature, aqueous synthesis and its release of a non-toxic anion following Cr(VI) capture, acetate. Furthermore, SBA capture of Cr(VI) remains >97% in the presence of a 50-fold molar excess of sulfate, nitrate, or carbonate. We also investigated the Cr(VI) sequestration abilities of silver 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane nitrate (SEN, [Ag(4,4'-bpe)][NO₃]) and structurally characterized the silver 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane chromate (SEC, SLUG-58, [Ag(4,4'-bpe)][CrO₄]_0.5) product. SEN was, however, a less effective Cr(VI) sequestering material than SBA.

Selenium and molybdenum synergistically alleviate chromium toxicity by modulating Cr uptake and subcellular distribution in Nicotiana tabacum L

Chromium (Cr) is a harmful heavy metal that poses a serious threat to plants and animals. Selenium (Se) and molybdenum (Mo) are two beneficial elements for plant growth and resistance. However, their interactive effects on Cr uptake and distribution are poorly understood. Therefore, a hydroponics experiment was conducted to explore the effects of the use of Se and Mo alone and simultaneously on mitigating Cr toxicity. In this study, Nicotiana tabacum L. seedlings were exposed to control, 50 µM Cr, 50 μM Cr + 2 μM Se, 50 μM Cr + 1 μM Mo, or 50 μM Cr + 2 μM Se + 1 μM Mo in Hoagland solution. After 2 weeks, the plant biomass, Cr, Se and Mo contents, photosynthesis, leaf ultrastructure, antioxidant system, subcellular distribution and associated gene expression in Nicotiana tabacum L. were determined. The results showed that simultaneous use of Se and Mo promoted tobacco growth under Cr stress, as evidenced by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and reducing Cr translocation factor (TF) and inducing a 51.3% reduction in Cr content in shoots. Additionally, Se-Mo interactions increased the levels of glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatin (PC) and the distribution of Cr in the cell walls and organelles. Furthermore, the relative expression of PCS1 was upregulated, while those of NtST1 and MSN1 were downregulated. The results concluded that the simultaneous use of Se and Mo effectively alleviated Cr toxicity in Nicotiana tabacum L., which not only offers an efficient way for crops to resist Cr toxicity but also provides evidence for the benefit of Se combined with Mo.

Hexavalent-Chromium-Induced Oxidative Stress and the Protective Role of Antioxidants against Cellular Toxicity

Hexavalent chromium is a highly soluble environmental contaminant. It is a widespread anthropogenic chromium species that is 100 times more toxic than trivalent chromium. Leather, chrome plating, coal mining and paint industries are the major sources of hexavalent chromium in water. Hexavalent chromium is widely recognised as a carcinogen and mutagen in humans and other animals. It is also responsible for multiorgan damage, such as kidney damage, liver failure, heart failure, skin disease and lung dysfunction. The fate of the toxicity of hexavalent chromium depends on its oxidation state. The reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) is responsible for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and chromium intermediate species, such as Cr (V) and Cr (IV). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are responsible for oxidative tissue damage and the disruption of cell organelles, such as mitochondria, DNA, RNA and protein molecules. Cr (VI)-induced oxidative stress can be neutralised by the antioxidant system in human and animal cells. In this review, the authors summarise the Cr (VI) source, toxicity and antioxidant defence mechanism against Cr (VI)-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Distribution of Chromium Species and Physico-Chemical Analysis of Various Industrial Effluents in Hyderabad and Jamshoro, Pakistan

This research aimed to quantify the speciation of chromium in different industrial effluent samples of Hyderabad and Jamshoro, Pakistan. The hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was determined by microsample injection system flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (MIS-FAAS). The total chromium was measured by MIS-FAAS after the oxidation of trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) by Ce(SO4)2 in an acidic medium (0.07 M H2SO4). The content of Cr(III) was measured by the difference method (total chromium – hexavalent chromium). In the effluent samples of textile and fabrics industries, the total Cr was observed 400 to 1600 times higher than the US-EPA and WHO regulatory limit (0.10 mg/L) in the industrial discharge. In the effluent of food and plastic industries, the Cr(VI) was found to be high as compared to the Cr(III), and the Cr(III) was observed high in the effluent samples of chemical as well as textile and fabrics industries. The Cr(VI) was higher than the US-EPA and WHO regulatory limit (0.05 mg/L) in the effluent samples of all selected industries, but the Cr(III) was within the US-EPA and WHO regulatory limit (170 mg/L) in the industrial discharges.

Comparing the influence of humic/fulvic acid and tannic acid on Cr(VI) adsorption onto polystyrene microplastics: Evidence for the formation of Cr(OH)3 colloids

Microplastics (MPs) can act as vectors for various contaminants in the aquatic environment. Although some research has investigated the adsorption characteristics and influencing factors of metals/organic molecules on MPs, the effects of dissolved organic matter (DOM) (which are ubiquitous active species in ecosystems) on metal oxyanions such as Cr(VI) capture by MPs are largely unknown. This study explored the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of Cr(VI) oxyanions onto polystyrene (PS) MPs using batch adsorption experiments and multiple spectroscopic methods. The effects of representative DOM components (i.e., humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) and tannic acid (TA)) on Cr(VI) capture by PS were particularly studied. Results revealed a significantly enhanced adsorption of Cr(VI) on PS in the presence of TA. The Cr(VI) adsorption capacity was increased from 2876 μg g^-1 to 4259 μg g^-1 and 5135 μg g^-1 when the TA concentrations raised from 0 to 10 and 20 mg L^-1, respectively. Combined microscopic and spectroscopic investigations revealed that Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) by TA and formed stable Cr(OH)₃ colloids on PS surfaces. Contrarily, HA and FA inhibited Cr(VI) adsorption onto PS, especially at pH > 2.0 and higher DOM concentrations, due to site competition and electrostatic repulsion. Increase in pH was found to reduce zeta potentials of MPs, resulting in inhibited Cr(VI) adsorption. The adsorbed Cr(VI) declined with increasing ionic strength, implying that outer-sphere surface complexation affected the adsorption process in the presence of DOM. These new findings improved our fundamental understanding of the fate of Cr(VI) and MPs in DOM-rich environmental matrices.

Neuron Protection by EDTA May Explain the Successful Outcomes of Toxic Metal Chelation Therapy in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Many mechanisms have been related to the etiopathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. In this context, the detrimental role of environmental agents has also been highlighted. Studies focused on the role of toxic metals in the pathogenesis of ND demonstrate the efficacy of treatment with the chelating agent calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in eliminating toxic metal burden in all ND patients, improving their symptoms. Lead, cadmium, aluminum, nickel, and mercury were the most important toxic metals detected in these patients. Here, I provide an updated review on the damage to neurons promoted by toxic metals and on the impact of EDTA chelation therapy in ND patients, along with the clinical description of a representative case.

Partial Oxidation of FeS Nanoparticles Enhances Cr(VI) Sequestration

Iron sulfide nanoparticles (nano-FeS) have shown great potential for in situ remediation of Cr(VI) pollution by reducing Cr(VI) to the less soluble and toxic Cr(III). However, material oxidation that inevitably occurs during storage and application alters its reactivity. Herein, we show that partial oxidation of nanoparticulate mackinawite (FeS) significantly enhances its capability in sequestering Cr(VI). Oxidation of nano-FeS increases its binding affinity to Cr(VI), likely due to preferential inner-sphere complexation of Cr(VI) oxyanions to ferric over ferrous iron in mackinawite/lepidocrocite (FeS/γ-FeOOH) nanocomposites. A trade-off is that oxidation mitigates Cr(VI) reduction by lowering the electron-donating potential of the material and the electron transfer at a solution-material interface and consequently hinders the transformation of adsorbed Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Notably, the rate-limiting step of Cr(VI) sequestration transitions from adsorption to reduction during oxidation, as demonstrated with batch experiments coupled with kinetic modeling. Thus, an optimum oxidation degree exists, wherein the gain in the overall performance from enhanced adsorption overcompensates the loss from inhibited reduction, resulting in maximum sequestration of aqueous Cr(VI) as solid-phase Cr(III). Our findings inform better assessment and design of nanomaterials for Cr(VI) remediation and may be extended to interactions of other oxyanions with natural and engineered nanoparticles during oxidative aging.
