Abstract
Carotenoids, known for their antioxidant properties, have garnered significant attention for their potential antitumour activities. This comprehensive review aims to elucidate the diverse mechanisms by which carotenoids exert antitumour effects, focusing on both well-established and novel findings. We explore their role in inducing apoptosis, inhibiting cell cycle progression and preventing metastasis by affecting oncogenic and tumour suppressor proteins. The review also explores the pro-oxidant function of carotenoids within cancer cells. In fact, although their overall contribution to cellular antioxidant defences is well known and significant, some carotenoids can exhibit pro-oxidant effects under certain conditions and are able to elevate reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in tumoural cells, triggering mitochondrial pathways that would lead to cell death. The final balance between their antioxidant and pro-oxidant activities depends on several factors, including the specific carotenoid, its concentration and the redox environment of the cell. Clinical trials are discussed, highlighting the conflicting results of carotenoids in cancer treatment and the importance of personalized approaches. Emerging research on rare carotenoids like bacterioruberin showcases their superior antioxidant capacity and selective cytotoxicity against aggressive cancer subtypes, such as triple-negative breast cancer. Future directions include innovative delivery systems, novel combinations and personalized treatments, aiming to enhance the therapeutic potential of carotenoids. This review highlights the promising yet complex landscape of carotenoid-based cancer therapies, calling for continued research and clinical exploration.

Abstract
For 2160 broilers, were raised from 1 to 42 d of age, was evaluated the consequences of microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds on dietary supplementation in broilers on meat quality and consumer acceptance during 200 d. Broilers were randomly distributed in a completely randomized design with 6 treatments: Negative control (NC): basal diet; Positive control (PC): NC+ Zinc bacitracin 15%; B150: NC+150 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds; B300: NC+300 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds; B450:NC+450 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds; and B600:NC+600 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds. The poultry meat characteristics (thawing loss, cooking loss, shear force, color and microstructure of the meat), oxidative stability (lipid oxidation, antioxidant activity DPPH and ABTS) and consumer acceptance (visual appraisal and willingness to buy) were evaluated. Color parameters (L and b), thawing losses and shear force were not significantly different among the treatments (NC, PC, B150, B300, B450 and B600; P > 0.05). The highest level of a was in the PC. The cooking losses were the greatest in B600. No treatment showed changes in muscle fibers. The antioxidant activity for DPPH was higher for B600. For ABTS, B150 and B300 presented the least lipid oxidation. When evaluating consumers' visual preference, B300 had the greatest in consumer preference and B150 and B300 had the greatest purchase intention on the first day of storage. After 6 d, B300 continued to be the most preferred and B150 and B450 began to show the greatest purchase intention. The B300 treatment showed a protective effect on lipid stability and consumer preference. These results highlight the importance of using a precise additive dosage during animal production to guarantee the meat's quality and satisfy consumers' demands.

Abstract
Antioxidants are endogenous and exogenous substances with the ability to inhibit oxidation processes by interacting with reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS, in turn, are small, highly reactive substances capable of oxidizing a wide range of molecules in the human body, including nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and even small inorganic compounds. The overproduction of ROS leads to oxidative stress, which constitutes a significant factor contributing to the development of disease, not only markedly diminishing the quality of life but also representing the most common cause of death in developed countries, namely, cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this review is to demonstrate the effect of selected antioxidants, such as coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), flavonoids, carotenoids, and resveratrol, as well as to introduce new antioxidant therapies utilizing miRNA and nanoparticles, in reducing the incidence and progression of CVD. In addition, new antioxidant therapies in the context of the aforementioned diseases will be considered. This review emphasizes the pleiotropic effects and benefits stemming from the presence of the mentioned substances in the organism, leading to an overall reduction in cardiovascular risk, including coronary heart disease, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and myocardial hypertrophy.

Abstract
Objective The oxidative balance score (OBS) is a comprehensive concept that includes 20 oxidative stressors and can be used to assess individual pro-oxidant versus antioxidant exposure, and the aim of the present study was to investigate the association between OBS and the risk of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), low estimated glomerular filtration rate (low-eGFR) and albuminuria in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods This cross-sectional study included nationally representative consecutive National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey DM patients aged 18 years and older from 2003-2018. The continuous variable OBS was converted into categorical variables by quartiles, and weighted multiple logistic regression analyses and restricted triple spline models were used to explore the relationships. We also performed subgroup analyses and interaction tests to verify the stability of the results. Results A total of 5389 participants were included, representing 23.6 million non-institutionalized US residents. The results from both multivariate logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline models indicated that OBS and dietary OBS levels were negatively associated with the risk of DKD, low-eGFR, and albuminuria, without finding a significant correlation between lifestyle OBS and these clinical outcomes. Compared to the lowest OBS quartile group, the prevalence risk of DKD (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.46-0.80), low-eGFR (OR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.33-0.64) and albuminuria (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.51-0.92) decreased by 39%, 54% and 32%, respectively, in the highest OBS quartile group. The results remained stable in subgroup analyses and no interaction between subgroups was found. Conclusion Higher levels of OBS and dietary OBS were associated with a lower risk of DKD, low-eGFR, and albuminuria. These findings provided preliminary evidence for the importance of adhering to an antioxidant-rich diet and lifestyle among individuals with diabetes.

Abstract
Carotenoids, having strong antioxidant properties, have been associated with neurodegenerative conditions like dementia and glaucoma, characterized by neuronal loss leading to cognitive and visual dysfunction. Therefore, carotenoids have attracted attention as factors predictive of the onset and progression of these neurodegenerative diseases. However, the impact of carotenoids on cognitive impairment and glaucomatous visual field defects remains unexplored. We conducted a retrospective, observational clinical study to investigate the association between skin carotenoid (SC) levels and cognitive impairment, as screened by the Mini-Cog test, in glaucoma patients. The study included 406 participants and 812 eyes were examined (average age: 69.7 ± 11.4 years; 228 men, 178 women) with various types of glaucoma: primary open angle (57.6%), exfoliation (18.6%), and other types (23.8%). SC levels were estimated via pressure-mediated reflection spectroscopy. Mixed-effects regression models were utilized to examine the relationship between SC levels, visual field defects, and Mini-Cog results. Of the participants, 28 (6.9%) tested positive on the Mini-Cog, suggesting cognitive impairment. The average SC level in the Mini-Cog positive group was significantly lower than in the negative group (269.5 ± 86.4 A.U. vs. 329.2 ± 120.4 A.U., respectively; p = 0.01). Additionally, the visual field mean deviation (MD) in the Mini-Cog positive group was notably worse than that in the negative group (-19.64 ± 9.07 dB vs. -12.46 ± 9.28 dB, respectively; p < 0.0001). The mixed-effects regression analysis revealed a significant association between Mini-Cog positivity and lower SC levels (p = 0.0006), although SC levels did not significantly correlate with MD (p = 0.3). Our findings suggest that cognitive impairment in glaucoma patients is associated with lower SC levels, underscoring the potential benefits of maintaining carotenoid levels to slow cognitive function decline. The protective role of carotenoids in glaucoma merits further investigation.

Abstract
An increasing number of epidemiological studies have explored the relationship between the risk of gastric cancer and specific dietary patterns, but the findings remain inconclusive. We, therefore, performed this comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze the available evidence regarding the associations between a priori and a posteriori dietary patterns and the risk of gastric cancer. A systematic search of six electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang Data, was carried out to retrieve the relevant articles published up to March 2024. Thirty-six studies (10 cohort and 26 case-control studies) with a total of 2 181 762 participants were included in the final analyses. Combining 15 effect sizes extracted from 12 articles, we observed a reduced risk of gastric cancer in the highest versus the lowest categories of the Mediterranean diet [relative risk (RR), 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.61-0.85; P < 0.001]. Combining 11 effect sizes from 10 articles (involving 694 240 participants), we found that the highest Dietary Inflammatory Index scores were significantly associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer (RR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.11-1.57; P < 0.001). A reduced risk of gastric cancer was shown for the highest compared with the lowest categories of healthy dietary pattern (RR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.67-0.91; P = 0.002). Conversely, the highest adherence to the Western dietary pattern was associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer (RR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.19-1.49; P < 0.001). Our study demonstrated that the Mediterranean diet and a healthy dietary pattern were associated with a decreased risk of gastric cancer. Conversely, the Dietary Inflammatory Index and Western dietary pattern were associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by itching, epidermal barrier dysfunction, and an unbalanced inflammatory reaction. AD pathophysiology involves a dysregulated immune response driven by T helper-2 cells. Many factors, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), are involved in AD pathogenesis by causing cellular damage and inflammation resulting in skin barrier dysfunction. This narrative review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the role of natural molecules and antioxidant compounds, highlighting their potential therapeutic value in AD prevention and management. They include vitamin D, vitamin E, pyridoxine, Vitamin C, carotenoids, and melatonin. Some studies report a statistically significant association between antioxidant levels and improvement in AD, however, there are conflicting results in which antioxidant supplementation, especially Vitamin D, did not result in improvement in AD. Therefore, the clinical efficacy of these dietary nutritional factors in the treatment of AD needs to be further evaluated in clinical trials. Meanwhile, antioxidants can be incorporated into the management of AD patients in a personalized manner, tailored to the severity of the disease, comorbidities, and individual needs.

Abstract
Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoid synthesized by plants and algae that has a beneficial effect on several biological processes and associated ailments. Its immediate application is in ophthalmology, where it significantly lowers the incidences of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It also has anti-inflammatory action, treatment of diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts, and enhancement of visual contrast. To critically assess lutein biosynthesis, therapeutic applicability, and market research literature. We have discussed its theoretical frameworks, experimental evidence, limitations, as well as clinical trial results, and future research prospects. The literature for this review article was mined and compiled by collecting and analyzing articles from several databases, including ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, PubMed, Wiley Online Library, Patentscope, and ClinicalTrials.gov published until March 30, 2022. Patent publications were identified using the search terms like IC:(C07C67/56) AND EN_AB:(lutein) OR EN_TI:(lutein) OR EN_AB:(extraction) OR EN_TI:(process). According to the literature, lutein is an essential nutrient given that it cannot be synthesized in the human body and acts as an antioxidant, affecting AMD, diabetic retinopathy, Rheumatic diseases, inflammation, and cancer. Due to inadequate production and laborious extraction, lutein is expensive despite its high demand and applicability. Market research predicts a 6.3% compound annual growth rate for lutein by 2032. Optimizing lutein extraction for high yield and purity is necessary. Lutein has proven applicability in various ailments as well as cosmetics that can be developed as a candidate drug for various diseases discussed in the review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with oxidative stress. Oxidation Balance Score (OBS) can evaluate the oxidation and antioxidant status of the body. However, we found no studies that examined the association between the two. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between OBS and COPD prevalence, and to explore dietary and lifestyle patterns aimed at preventing and delay COPD in adults. METHOD We included 13,909 participants using data from the NHANES. Weighted logistic regression model and weighted restricted cubic spline curve were used to explore the relationship between OBS and COPD. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were used to determine the stability of results. Mediation analysis was employed to assess the effect of inflammatory factors. RESULT In logistic regression model, compared with the lowest quartile of OBS, the highest quartile of OBS, diet OBS, lifestyle OBS and COPD had odd ratios OR(95%CI)=0.67 (0.51, 0.89), OR (95% CI) = 0.71 (0.55, 0.93), and OR (95% CI) = 0.39 (0.26, 0.58) respectively. The restricted cubic spline curve reveals that OBS and dietary OBS exhibit an L-shaped curve in relation to COPD prevalence, while lifestyle OBS shows a negative correlation curve with COPD prevalence. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis proved the robustness of the association. Mediation analysis demonstrated that inflammatory factors mediate the association of OBS on the prevalence of COPD. CONCLUSION The increase of OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS was associated with a decrease in the prevalence of COPD, but excessive OBS and dietary OBS were associated with an inapparent decrease or even increased risk of COPD.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) component of solar radiation impairs genome stability by inducing the formation of pyrimidine-pyrimidone (6-4) photoproducts [(6-4)PPs] in plant genomes. (6-4)PPs disrupt growth and development by interfering with transcription and DNA replication. To resist UV stress, plants employ both photoreactivation and nucleotide excision repair that excises oligonucleotide containing (6-4)PPs through two subpathways: global and transcription-coupled excision repair (TCR). Here, we analyzed the genome-wide excision repair-mediated repair of (6-4)PPs in Arabidopsis thaliana and found that (6-4)PPs can be repaired by TCR; however, the main subpathway to remove (6-4)PPs from the genome is global repair. Our analysis showed that open chromatin genome regions are more rapidly repaired than heterochromatin regions, and the repair level peaks at the promoter, transcription start site and transcription end site of genes. Our study revealed that the repair of (6-4)PP in plants showed a distinct genome-wide repair profile compared to the repair of other major UV-induced DNA lesion called cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs).

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The interaction between diet, inflammation, and oxidative stress significantly influences aging, but the available evidence has been limited. We evaluated potential associations of dietary inflammatory index (DII), dietary oxidative balance score (DOBS), and measures of biological aging. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed among 8839 individuals from NHANES 2003-2014. DII and DOBS were determined by aggregating data from 26 to 17 a priori selected dietary components. Biological aging metrics included homeostatic dysregulation (HD), Klemera-Doubal method (KDM), phenotypic age (PA), and allostatic load (AL). Binomial logistic regression models and multivariate linear regression models were conducted. RESULTS The associations of dietary inflammation and oxidative stress potential and biological aging metrics were significant among American adults nationwide. Consuming foods with higher DII was significantly associated with accelerated HD 1.26 (1.10, 1.44), KDM 1.24 (1.06, 1.45), and PA 1.54 (1.33, 1.78). Compared with the lowest DOBS, the hazard ratios of accelerated HD, KDM, PA, and AL were 0.74 (0.64, 0.86), 0.80 (0.70, 0.92), 0.61 (0.52, 0.72) and 0.78 (0.63, 0.97), respectively. The adverse effects of pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidative diets on accelerated HD, KDM, and PA were 1.39 (1.18, 1.62), 1.28 (1.08, 1.51), and 1.76 (1.47, 2.10). Serum AST/ALT ratio and globulin were implicated in and mediate the aging effects. CONCLUSIONS Higher DII and/or lower DOBS are associated with higher markers of biological aging. Our research elucidates that diets may mitigate biological aging resulting from inflammation and/or oxidative stress.

Abstract
Periodontitis is the most common inflammatory oral disease that affects around 15% of adults and contributes to severe periodontal tissue destruction with subsequent tooth loosening and loss. Among the main pathogenic mechanisms underlying periodontitis, excessive reactive oxygen species production and oxidative stress play a predominant role in inducing both local and systemic damage. Current therapeutic approaches have expanded the conventional methods combined with herbal antioxidant compounds to free radical-scavenging nanomaterials and infrared laser therapy, offering promising pre-clinical evidence in periodontitis management. Herein, we review the pathogenic mechanisms of reactive oxygen species tissue damage, along with recent advances in oxidative stress biomarkers and novel targeting options.

Abstract
Bisphenols such as bisphenol A (BPA), S (BPS), C (BPC), F (BPF), AF (BPAF), tetrabromobisphenol, nonylphenol, and octylphenol are plasticizers used worldwide to manufacture daily-use articles. Exposure to these compounds is related to many pathologies of public health importance, such as infertility. Using a protector compound against the reproductive toxicological effects of bisphenols is of scientific interest. Melatonin and vitamins have been tested, but the results are not conclusive. To this end, this systematic review and meta-analysis compared the response of reproductive variables to melatonin and vitamin administration as protectors against damage caused by bisphenols. We search for controlled studies of male rats exposed to bisphenols to induce alterations in reproduction, with at least one intervention group receiving melatonin or vitamins (B, C, or E). Also, molecular docking simulations were performed between the androgen (AR) and estrogen receptors (ER), melatonin, and vitamins. About 1234 records were initially found; finally, 13 studies were qualified for review and meta-analysis. Melatonin plus bisphenol improves sperm concentration and viability of sperm and increases testosterone serum levels compared with control groups; however, groups receiving vitamins plus bisphenols had lower sperm concentration, total testis weight, and testosterone serum levels than the control. In the docking analysis, vitamin E had the highest negative MolDock score, representing the best binding affinity with AR and ER, compared with other vitamins and melatonin in the docking. Our findings suggest that vitamins could act as an endocrine disruptor, and melatonin is most effective in protecting against the toxic effects of bisphenols.

Abstract
A physiological level of oxygen/nitrogen free radicals and non-radical reactive species (collectively known as ROS/RNS) is termed oxidative eustress or "good stress" and is characterized by low to mild levels of oxidants involved in the regulation of various biochemical transformations such as carboxylation, hydroxylation, peroxidation, or modulation of signal transduction pathways such as Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade, phosphoinositide-3-kinase, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and other processes. Increased levels of ROS/RNS, generated from both endogenous (mitochondria, NADPH oxidases) and/or exogenous sources (radiation, certain drugs, foods, cigarette smoking, pollution) result in a harmful condition termed oxidative stress ("bad stress"). Although it is widely accepted, that many chronic diseases are multifactorial in origin, they share oxidative stress as a common denominator. Here we review the importance of oxidative stress and the mechanisms through which oxidative stress contributes to the pathological states of an organism. Attention is focused on the chemistry of ROS and RNS (e.g. superoxide radical, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals, peroxyl radicals, nitric oxide, peroxynitrite), and their role in oxidative damage of DNA, proteins, and membrane lipids. Quantitative and qualitative assessment of oxidative stress biomarkers is also discussed. Oxidative stress contributes to the pathology of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, neurological disorders (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, Down syndrome), psychiatric diseases (depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), renal disease, lung disease (chronic pulmonary obstruction, lung cancer), and aging. The concerted action of antioxidants to ameliorate the harmful effect of oxidative stress is achieved by antioxidant enzymes (Superoxide dismutases-SODs, catalase, glutathione peroxidase-GPx), and small molecular weight antioxidants (vitamins C and E, flavonoids, carotenoids, melatonin, ergothioneine, and others). Perhaps one of the most effective low molecular weight antioxidants is vitamin E, the first line of defense against the peroxidation of lipids. A promising approach appears to be the use of certain antioxidants (e.g. flavonoids), showing weak prooxidant properties that may boost cellular antioxidant systems and thus act as preventive anticancer agents. Redox metal-based enzyme mimetic compounds as potential pharmaceutical interventions and sirtuins as promising therapeutic targets for age-related diseases and anti-aging strategies are discussed.

Background Despite growing evidence for the association of adherence to the Mediterranean diet with gastric cancer risk, the results remain inconclusive. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the evidence from previous observational studies and assess the potential association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and risk of gastric cancer using a dose-response meta-analysis. Methods A comprehensive literature search for all observational studies published up to June 30, 2023 was conducted using the databases of PubMed, ISI Web of Science, EBSCO, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wanfang Data. The pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for the highest versus the lowest categories of Mediterranean diet score in relation to gastric cancer risk, using random-effects models. The Cochran's Q test and I-squared (I2) statistic were used to detect the sources of heterogeneity among the included studies. Results Overall, 11 studies (five cohort and six case-control studies) with a total number of 1,366,318 participants were included in the final analysis. Combining 14 effect sizes from 11 studies revealed that compared with the lowest category, the highest adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a 29% reduction in the risk of gastric cancer (RR:0.71; 95%CI:0.59-0.84, p < 0.001). In addition, linear dose-response analysis showed that each 1-score increment in Mediterranean diet score was associated with a 5% lower risk of gastric cancer (RR:0.95; 95%CI: 0.94-0.96, p < 0.001). Stratified analysis showed a significant association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and risk of gastric cancer in case-control studies (RR = 0.44;95%CI:0.32-0.61, p < 0.001), and a marginally significant association in prospective cohort studies (RR = 0.88; 95%CI: 0.79-0.98, p = 0.024), respectively. At the same time, a more significant association between Mediterranean diet and reduced risk of gastric cancer was observed in other countries (RR = 0.28; 95%CI:0.16-0.49, p < 0.001) than in Western countries (RR = 0.75; 95%CI:0.64-0.88, p = 0.001). Conclusion Our results demonstrate that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with 29% reduced risk of gastric cancer. Further large prospective studies and randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm our findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of urinary incontinence (UI). This study aimed to assess the association between the oxidative balance score (OBS) and UI in adult females in the United States. METHODS The study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database, spanning from 2005 to 2018. Weighted multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analyses, and restricted cubic spline regression were conducted to determine the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) regarding the association between OBS and UI. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness of the findings. RESULTS A total of 7304 participants were enrolled in this study. After adjusting for potential confounders, participants with lower OBS were found to have a higher likelihood of experiencing stress, urge, and mixed incontinence (OR, 0.986; 95% CI 0.975-0.998; p = 0.022; OR, 0.978; 95% CI 0.963-0.993; p = 0.004; and OR, 0.975; 95% CI 0.961-0.990; p = 0.001). Lifestyle factors were strongly associated with the prevalence and frequency of UI. The results remained consistent, and no significant interaction effects were observed in the subgroup analyses. The prevalence of three types of UI exhibited a nonlinear inverted U-shaped trend with increasing in OBS and dietary OBS (p for nonlinear < 0.05). CONCLUSION Among females, the higher the OBS, the lower the prevalence of UI. Therefore, dietary and lifestyle-related antioxidant therapy for females with UI should receive attention and be subject to further investigation.

Abstract
Nitroxides are stable, low molecular-weight radicals containing a nitroxide group that has an unpaired electron. The presence of a nitroxide group determines their redox properties. The effect of the piperidine nitroxides, Tempo, Tempol, and Tempamine, on metalloproteins (hemoglobin, superoxide dismutase, catalase) and lactate dehydrogenase in red blood cells was investigated in this research. In addition, the level of lipid peroxidation and the level of protein carbonyl groups were examined as indicators of the effect of oxidative stress. Nitroxides increased superoxide dismutase activity and oxidized hemoglobin to methemoglobin, and also slightly decreased the catalase activity of red blood cells treated with nitroxides. Tempol significantly decreased lactate dehydrogenase activity. All three nitroxides had no effect on membrane lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation. Our results confirm that nitroxides have both antioxidant and prooxidative effects in human red blood cells. The piperidine nitroxides do not initiate the oxidation of proteins and lipids in the membranes of human red blood cells.

Abstract
The different anatomical compartments of the eye are highly subjected to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation due to internal factors, such as metabolic high oxygen consumption, as well as environmental factors, including UV light. An antioxidant defense system is endowed in the eye tissues to regulate ROS quantity and activity. When this homeostatic system is overwhelmed, oxidative stress occurs, causing cellular damage, chronic inflammation, and tissue degeneration. It also plays a significant role in the development and progression of various ocular diseases. Understanding the mechanisms underlying oxidative stress in ocular conditions is thus crucial for the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies. To track marketed products based on antioxidant substances as active ingredients, the databases of the European Medicines Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration were consulted. Only a limited number of items were identified, which were either used as therapeutic treatment or during ocular surgery, including antioxidants, synthetical derivatives, or pro-drugs designed to enhance tissue permeation and activity. This review aims to provide an overview of the primary ocular pathologies associated with oxidative stress and of the available pharmacological interventions centered around antioxidant molecules. Such insights are essential for advancing the development of effective prevention and novel treatment approaches.

Abstract
Knowledge is limited about the level of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of seeds from bred lines of common beans developed from interspecific crosses using four different Phaseolus species (P. vulgaris L., P. coccineus L., P. acutifolius A. Gray. Gray., and P. dumosus). In this study, differences in the nutritional quality of seeds among 112 bean genotypes were evaluated by measuring the levels of phenolic compounds, pigments, antioxidant activity, and sugars. The bean genotypes were grown under high temperatures and acid soil conditions in the Amazon region of Colombia. Five typology groups of bean genotypes were identified based on the level of bioactive compounds and their functional capacity: (1) highly bioactive and functional (HBF); (2) moderately bioactive and functional (MBF); (3) moderate antioxidant content with pigment influence (MACP); (4) moderately antinutritional with limited antioxidant potential (MALAP); and (5) antinutritional, low bioactive, and functional (ALBF). We developed a nutritional quality index (NQI) with values ranging from 0 to 1 based on the nutritional and anti-nutritional balance of each genotype and the higher values of the NQI of a genotype indicating greater nutritional quality. We found three interspecific bred lines (SER 212, SER 213, and RRA 81), with NQI values higher than 0.8. These three lines belong to the typology group of HBF. The superior nutritional quality of these three interspecific bred lines is attributed to a greater level of bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity. These three bred lines may serve as useful parents to develop nutritionally superior and stress-resilient beans from bean breeding programs. Further research is needed to explore the role of testa color in improving the nutritional quality of seeds of common bean genotypes grown under different climatic conditions.

Abstract
This study investigated whether the coadministration of vitamin E (VitE) diminishes the harmful effects provoked by plasticizer bisphenol S (BPS) in the serum metabolites related to hepatic and renal metabolism, as well as the endocrine pancreatic function in diabetic male Wistar rats. Rats were divided into five groups (n = 5-6); the first group was healthy rats (Ctrl group). The other four groups were diabetic rats induced with 45 mg/kg bw of streptozotocin: Ctrl-D (diabetic control); VitE-D (100 mg/kg bw/d of VitE); BPS-D (100 mg/kg bw/d of BPS); The animals from the VitE + BPS-D group were administered 100 mg/kg bw/d of VitE + 100 mg/kg bw/d of BPS. All compounds were administered orally for 30 days. Body weight, biochemical assays, urinalysis, glucose tolerance test, pancreas histopathology, proximate chemical analysis in feces, and the activity of antioxidants in rat serum were assessed. The coadministration of VitE + BPS produced weight losses, increases in 14 serum analytes, and degeneration in the pancreas. Therefore, the VitE + BPS coadministration did not have a protective effect versus the harmful impact of BPS or the diabetic metabolic state; on the contrary, it partially aggravated the damage produced by the BPS. VitE is likely to have an additive effect on the toxicity of BPS.

Abstract
The success of Space missions and the efficacy of colonizing extraterrestrial environments depends on ensuring adequate nutrition for astronauts and autonomy from terrestrial resources. A balanced diet incorporating premium quality fresh foods, such as microgreens, is essential to the mental and physical well-being of mission crews. To improve the nutritional intake of astronaut meals, two levels of potassium iodide (KI; 4 µM and 8 µM) and an untreated control were assessed for iodine (I) biofortification, and overall nutraceutical profile of four microgreens: tatsoi (Brassica rapa L. subsp. narinosa), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), green basil, and purple basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). A dose-dependent increase in I was observed at 8 µM for all species, reaching concentrations of 200.73, 118.17, 93.97, and 82.70 mg kg-1 of dry weight, in tatsoi, coriander, purple basil, and green basil, respectively. Across species, I biofortification slightly reduced fresh yield (-7.98%) while increasing the antioxidant activity (ABTS, FRAP, and DPPH). LC-MS/MS Q extractive orbitrap analysis detected 10 phenolic acids and 23 flavonoids among microgreen species. The total concentration of phenolic acids increased (+28.5%) in purple basil at 8 µM KI, while total flavonoids in coriander increased by 23.22% and 34.46% in response to 4 and 8 µM KI, respectively. Both doses of KI increased the concentration of total polyphenols in all species by an average of 17.45%, compared to the control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The contribution of the balance between overall oxidative stress and antioxidant status in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unclear. The oxidative balance score (OBS) comprises dietary and lifestyle pro- and antioxidant components that indicate the overall oxidative stress burden. We investigated the association between OBS and the incidence of NAFLD in middle-aged and older Korean adults. METHODS Among the 10,030 participants of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study_Ansan and Ansung cohort, 5065 without NAFLD at baseline were selected for secondary analysis. OBS was categorized into quartiles. Multiple Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for NAFLD incidence by sex-specific OBS quartile groups after adjusting for confounders. RESULTS During the follow-up period (median 13.4 years), 913 (43.2%) men and 1288 (43.9%) women were newly diagnosed with NAFLD. Compared with that of the lowest quartile (Q1) group, the adjusted HR (95% CI) for NAFLD incidence in Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups was 0.85 (0.71-1.00), 0.65 (0.54-0.78), and 0.50 (0.40-0.62) in men, and 0.85 (0.73-0.99), 0.66 (0.56-0.77), and 0.48 (0.40-0.59) in women, respectively, and for NAFLD incidence, per incremental change in OBS, was 0.90 (0.87-0.92) in men and 0.88 (0.86-0.90) in women. CONCLUSIONS A higher OBS was significantly associated with a lower risk for NAFLD incidence. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and an antioxidant-rich diet is a potentially viable strategy for preventing NAFLD.

Abstract
BackgroundAntioxidant micronutrients have a therapeutic potential for clinical treatment of obesity. NO research, however, has examined the connection between the complex level of dietary antioxidants and obesity.Materials and methodsWe mainly aimed to investigate the relationship between a combination of antioxidants and obesity using the database of the national health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES). This cross-sectional study contains a survey of 41,021 people (≥18 years) in total ranging from 2005 to 2018. Multivariate logistic and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were performed to investigate the associations between these antioxidants, both individually and collectively, and the prevalence of obesity. The restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression was also utilized to analyze the linearity of these associations.ResultsAccording to multivariate logistic models, we found that the levels of most antioxidants in the highest quartile were independently related to a lower prevalence of obesity, while a reverse result was observed in selenium (p for trend <0.05). The WQS index revealed that a total of the 11 antioxidants is negatively related to the prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity (all p<0.001), and iron/vitamin C have the greatest weight in the negative associations between antioxidant complex and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity. In addition, the RCS regression showed that retinol, vitamin A, α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, vitamin C, iron, and copper all had a non-linear association with obesity. Threshold effect analysis demonstrated that the inflection points of retinol, vitamin A, α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, vitamin C, iron, and cooper were 235.57, 374.81, 58.89, 891.44, 30.70, 43,410.00, 11,240.00, and 990.00 μg/day, respectively.ConclusionOur study found that a high level of a complex of 11 dietary antioxidants is related to a lower prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity, among this inverse associations iron and vitamin C have the greatest weight.

Abstract
Purpose Given the impact of oxidative imbalance on the development of airway pathologies, this study was undertaken to investigate the association between oxidative balance (OB) scores and lung function in the adult Korean population. Methods Data of 17,368 adults with available OB scores and pulmonary function test results were extracted from the 2013-2019 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for reduced forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) per 1-point decrease in OB score. Dose dependent association of reduced lung function with OB scores was also investigated. Results Males, low-income subjects, individuals with comorbidities, and those with reduced pulmonary function had lower OB scores (representing oxidative balance). Overall, the association between oxidative imbalance and reduced lung function was remarkable in FVC than FEV1 (OR [95% CI], 1.06 [1.04-1.07] vs. 1.03 [1.02-1.04]; both p < 0.001). Linear relationships between the level of reduced lung function and OB scores were significantly noted (p for trend<0.001 in both FEV1 and FVC). Conclusion Our findings suggest that oxidative imbalance is associated with reduced pulmonary function.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is a novel risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The oxidative balance score (OBS) was developed to represent the overall oxidative balance based on dietary and lifestyle pro-oxidant and antioxidant components. The aim of this study is to verify the relationship between the OBS and the incidence of CKD. Data from 5795 participants without CKD at the baseline survey of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study were analyzed. Participants were classified into sex-specific OBS tertiles. During the mean follow-up period of 13.6 years, 286 men and 382 women newly developed CKD. The Cox proportional hazard spline curve revealed an inverse dose-response association between the OBS and incident CKD in both men and women. Multiple Cox proportional hazard regression analysis revealed that the adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for sex-specific highest (T3) and middle (T2) OBS tertile groups were 0.80 (0.59-1.08) and 0.70 (0.51-0.95), respectively, in men and 0.76 (0.59-0.98) and 0.73 (0.55-0.96), respectively, in women, with the sex-specific lowest OBS tertile group (T1) as the reference. These results suggest that a healthy diet and lifestyle that increases the OBS may help prevent CKD in both men and women.

Abstract
Background Despite increasing evidence for the association of adherence to the Dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet with breast cancer risk, the results remain inconclusive. The purpose of the current systematic review was to summarize the evidence from previous observational studies and explore the potential association between DASH diet and breast cancer risk using meta-analysis. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI and Wanfang Data to identify the relevant publications from inception up to July 2022. The pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for the highest versus the lowest categories of DASH score in relation to breast cancer risk, using a random-effects model. The Cochran's Q test and I-squared (I 2) statistic were used to detect the sources of heterogeneity among the included studies. Results Overall, eleven studies, involving 23,254 breast cancer cases and 449,273 participants, were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Combining 16 effect sizes from 11 studies, a significant inverse association between adherence to the DASH diet and risk of breast cancer was observed (RR = 0.79; 95% CI: 0.70, 0.90, P < 0.0001). Stratified analysis showed a significant association between adherence to the DASH diet and risk of breast cancer in case-control studies (RR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.27-0.89, P = 0.019), and a marginally significant association in prospective cohort studies (RR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.86-0.98, P = 0.014), respectively. Besides, a more significant association between DASH score and reduced risk of breast cancer was observed in Asian countries (RR = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.31-0.81, P = 0.005) than in the United States (RR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.89-0.99, P = 0.012). Similarly, when we conducted analyses separately by menopausal status, we found a significant inverse association between DASH diet and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women (RR = 0.58; 95% CI: 0.39-0.87, P = 0.008). Conclusion The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis indicate a significant inverse association between adherence to the DASH diet and risk of breast cancer. Further large prospective studies and randomized controlled trials are required to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Background Oxidative stress is associated with outcomes of chronic lung disease. The oxidative stress-related exposures of diet and lifestyle can be evaluated by the oxidative balance score (OBS), and higher OBS scores indicate more significant antioxidant exposures. But the relationship between OBS and lung health is unknown. Purpose The aim of this study was to explore the association between OBS and lung health (respiratory symptoms, chronic lung disease, and lung function). Methods A series of models, including weighted linear models, weighted logistic regression, and weighted multinomial logistic regression, were performed to assess the associations of OBS with respiratory symptoms, chronic lung disease, and lung function. The models adjusted by age, race/ethnicity, gender, educational background, poverty-to-income ratio, and dietary energy were also performed. Results Cross-sectional data of 5,214 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the years 2007-2012 were analyzed. For every one-unit increase in OBS, the odds of wheezing/chronic bronchitis decreased by 6%. Increased OBS was associated with higher percent-predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) (adjusted mean difference (MD), 0.21%; 95% CI: 0.10-0.32) and percent-predicted forced vital capacity (FVC) (adjusted MD, 0.15%; 95% CI: 0.07-0.24). A significantly lower risk of wheezing/chronic bronchitis was found in participants in the second/third/fourth OBS quartile compared to those in the first OBS quartile (all P for trend < 0.05). Moreover, higher percent-predicted FEV1 and FVC were also found in the third quartile and fourth quartile (all P for trend < 0.05). Furthermore, both dietary and lifestyle components were tightly related to pulmonary outcomes. Many associations were maintained after stratified by sex or after sensitivity analyses. Conclusion Oxidative balance score was negatively correlated with the diagnosis of chronic bronchitis/wheezing/restrictive spirometry pattern and positively correlated with percent-predicted FVC and FEV1. It seems that the higher the OBS score, the better the pulmonary outcomes. The findings highlight the importance of adherence to an antioxidant diet and lifestyle and that it contributes to lung health.

Abstract
Background Accumulating epidemiological evidence has shown the favorable associations between healthy dietary patterns and risk of glioma, although the results remain inconclusive. Objective We therefore carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the evidence from previous published studies, and to clarify the effects of healthy dietary patterns, typical healthy foods on glioma. Methods PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wan fang data were searched from inception up to September 2022 for eligible studies. Two authors independently performed the literature search, study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. Heterogeneity across studies was estimated using the Cochran's Q test and I 2 statistic. According to heterogeneity, the fixed-effects model or random-effects model was selected to obtain the relative risk (RR) of the merger. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis and publication bias were also used for our analysis. Results Twenty-four articles that met the selection criteria, involving 7,278 glioma cases and 2,143,528 participants, were included in our analysis. There was a reduced risk of glioma in the highest compared with the lowest categories of healthy dietary patterns (RR = 0.58; 95% CI: 0.44-0.77; P < 0.0001). Moreover, compared with the lowest intakes, the highest intakes of vegetables (RR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.73-0.96; P = 0.012) and fruits (RR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72-1.00; P = 0.045) significantly reduce the risk of glioma. However, the intakes of fresh fish, nuts, whole grains, and dairy products showed no statistically significant associations with the risk of glioma (P > 0.05). Conclusion Findings from this systematic review and meta-analysis indicate that higher intakes of healthy dietary patterns, vegetables, and fruits are significantly associated with the lower risk of glioma. Further studies, particularly with prospective design, are required to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Aim. The aim of the work was to study the possibility of using an environmentally friendly strain of yeast of the genus Rhodotorula for the bioconversion into fodder carotenoid‐containing biomass of the secondary product of processing pea flour into a protein concentrate (whey).Material and Methods. We used a new strain of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa 111 and by‐products of processing pea and chickpea flour into protein concentrates and potatoes into starch (whey). We used standard and special methods for the analysis of serum and microbial‐vegetable concentrate (FMVC) namely: chemical; biochemical; microbiological; and the determination of toxicity with ciliates.Results. Optimal conditions for growing R. mucilaginosa 111 on pea whey were determined (temperature 16.9°C, pH 7.8, amount of inoculum 1.85%). More biomass was synthesized on pea whey than on chickpea and potato whey – 81 g/dm3. The mass fraction of protein in the biomass is 58.90±3.03% on dry matter and the rate of essential amino acids is 119– 243%. Lipids included 20% saturated and 78% unsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid – 45.26±0.70%, oleic – 24.04±0.76%, palmitoleic – 6.46±0.31%, palmitic – 13.70±0.81%. The yeast produced phytoin derivatives, torulene, β‐carotene, torularodin and phytoin. FMVC from pea whey stimulated the growth of ciliates Tetrahymena pyriformis by 29.1%, from chickpea whey (by 18.6% more intensively than distilled water), while potato whey reduced its growth rate.Conclusion. The dry biomass of the ecologically safe new yeast strain R. mucilaginosa 111 contained complete proteins, lipids, minerals, and carotenoids necessary for feeding animals. Thus liquid pea whey can be used for its biokonversions, while avoiding environmental pollution.

Abstract
Introduction Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathophysiology of hypertension development. The oxidative balance score (OBS) comprises dietary and lifestyle pro- and anti-oxidant components and reflects the overall oxidative stress burden. We aimed to evaluate the association between the OBS and new-onset hypertension (HTN) using large, community-based, prospective Korean cohort data. Methods Among 10,030 participants aged 40-69 years included in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, the data of 5,181 participants were analyzed. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for new-onset HTN according to sex-specific OBS quartile groups were calculated using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analyses. Results During the mean 13.6-year follow-up period, 1,157 men and 1,196 women developed new-onset HTN. Compared to the Q1 group, the adjusted HRs (95%CI) for new-onset HTN in the Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups were 0.96 (0.82-1.16), 0.85 (0.72-0.99), and 0.71 (0.59-0.86) in men and 0.81 (0.69-0.95), 0.81(0.68-0.95), and 0.70 (0.57-0.84) in women, respectively. Discussion Individuals with high OBS are at lower risk of developing HTN. This study suggests that a healthy lifestyle and antioxidant rich diet could be a preventive strategy for HTN.

Abstract
α- and β-carotenes belong to the most essential carotenoids in the human body and display remarkable pharmacological value for health due to their beneficial antioxidant activities. Distinct high α-/β-carotene stoichiometries have gained increasing attention for their effective preventions of Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. However, it is extremely difficult to obtain α-carotene in nature, impeding the accumulations of high α-/β-carotene stoichiometries and excavation of their antioxidant activities. Herein, we developed a dynamically operable strategy based on lycopene cyclases (LCYB and LCYE) for concurrently enriching α- and β-carotenes along with high stoichiometries in E. coli. Membrane-targeted and promoter-centered approaches were firstly implemented to spatially enhance catalytic efficiency and temporally boost expression of TeLCYE to address its low competitivity at the starting stage. Dynamically temperature-dependent regulation of TeLCYE and TeLCYB was then performed to finally achieve α-/β-carotene stoichiometries of 4.71 at 37 °C, 1.65 at 30 °C, and 1.06 at 25 °C, respectively. In the meantime, these α-/β-carotene ratios were confirmed to result in diverse antioxidative activities. According to our knowledge, this is the first time that both the widest range and antioxidant activities of high α/β-carotene stoichiometries were reported in any organism. Our work provides attractive potentials for obtaining natural products with competitivity and a new insight on the protective potentials of α-/β-carotenes with high ratios for health supply.

Abstract
7-ketocholesterol and 7β-hydroxycholesterol are two oxysterols mainly formed by the autoxidation of cholesterol. These two molecules are interconvertible via specific enzymes. These two oxysterols are often observed at increased amounts in biological fluids as well as tissues and organs affected during age-related diseases and in diseases of civilization such as cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and ocular diseases as well as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Noteworthy, 7-ketocholesterol and 7β-hydroxycholesterol induce oxidative stress and inflammation, which are frequently observed in patients with age-related and civilization diseases. For this reason, the involvement of these two oxysterols in the pathophysiology of these diseases is widely suspected. In addition, the toxicity of these oxysterols can lead to death by oxiapoptophagy characterized by oxidative stress, apoptosis induction and autophagy criteria. To prevent, or even treat, certain age-related or civilization diseases associated with increased levels of 7-ketocholesterol and 7β-hydroxycholesterol, the identification of molecules or mixtures of molecules attenuating or inhibiting the toxic effects of these oxysterols allows to consider new treatments. In this context, many nutrients present in significant amounts in the Mediterranean diet, especially tocopherols, fatty acids, and polyphenols, have shown cytoprotective activities as well as several Mediterranean oils (argan and olive oils, milk thistle seed oil, and pistacia lentiscus seed oil). Consequently, a nutraceutical approach, rich in nutrients present in the Mediterranean diet, could thus make it possible to counteract certain age-related and civilization diseases associated with increased levels of 7-ketocholesterol and 7β-hydroxycholesterol.

Abstract
Hormetic dose responses are reported here to occur commonly in the dermal wound healing process, with the particular focus on cell viability, proliferation, migration and collagen deposition of human and murine fibroblasts with in vitro studies. Hormetic responses were induced by a wide range of substances, including endogenous agents, pharmaceutical preparations, plant-derived extracts including many well-known dietary supplements, as well as physical stressor agents such as low-level laser treatments. Detailed mechanistic studies have identified common signaling pathways and their cross-pathway communications that mediate the hormetic dose responses. These findings complement and extend a similar comprehensive assessment concerning the occurrence of hormetic dose responses in keratinocytes. These findings demonstrate the generality of the hormetic dose response for key wound healing endpoints, suggesting that the hormesis concept has a fundamental role in wound healing, with respect to guiding strategies for experimental evaluation as well as therapeutic applications.

Abstract
A hundred years have passed since vitamin E was identified as an essential micronutrient for mammals. Since then, many biological functions of vitamin E have been unraveled in both cell and animal models, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as regulatory activities on cell signaling and gene expression. However, the bioavailability and physiological functions of vitamin E have been considerably shown to depend on lifestyle, genetic factors, and individual health conditions. Another important facet that has been considered less so far is the endogenous interaction with other nutrients. Accumulating evidence indicates that the interaction between vitamin E and other nutrients, especially those that are enriched by supplementation in humans, may explain at least some of the discrepancies observed in clinical trials. Meanwhile, increasing evidence suggests that the different forms of vitamin E metabolites and derivates also exhibit physiological activities, which are more potent and mediated via different pathways compared to the respective vitamin E precursors. In this review, possible molecular mechanisms between vitamin E and other nutritional factors are discussed and their potential impact on physiological and pathophysiological processes is evaluated using published co-supplementation studies.

Abstract
The cell wall is a dynamic organelle that determines the shape and provides the cell with mechanical strength. This study investigated whether modulation of cell wall composition can influence the production or secretion of small metabolites by yeast cell factories. We deleted and upregulated several cell wall-related genes KRE2, CWP1, CWP2, ECM33, PUN1, and LAS21 in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae engineered for p-coumaric acid or β-carotene production. Deletions of las21∆ and ecm33∆ impaired the yeast growth on medium with cell wall stressors, calcofluor white, and caffeine. Both overexpression and deletion of ECM33 significantly improved the specific yield of p-coumaric acid and β-carotene. We observed no change in secretion in any cell wall altered mutants, suggesting the cell wall is not a limiting factor for small molecule secretion at the current production levels. We evaluated the cell wall morphology of the ECM33 mutant strains using transmission electron microscopy. The ecm33∆ mutants had an increased chitin deposition and a less structured cell wall, while the opposite was observed in ECM33-overexpressing strains. Our results point at the cell wall-related gene ECM33 as a potential target for improving production in engineered yeast cell factories.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) represent a group of molecules with a signaling role that are involved in regulating human cell proliferation and differentiation. Increased ROS concentrations are often associated with the local nonspecific oxidation of biological macromolecules, especially proteins and lipids. Free radicals, in general, may randomly damage protein molecules through the formation of protein-centered radicals as intermediates that, in turn, decay into several end oxidation products. Malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of free-radical-mediated lipid oxidation and cell membrane damage, forms adducts with proteins in a nonspecific manner, leading to the loss of their function. In our study, we utilized U-937 cells as a model system to unveil the effect of four selected bioactive compounds (chlorogenic acid, oleuropein, tomatine, and tyrosol) to reduce oxidative stress associated with adduct formation in differentiating cells. The purity of the compounds under study was confirmed by an HPLC analysis. The cellular integrity and changes in the morphology of differentiated U-937 cells were confirmed with confocal microscopy, and no significant toxicity was found in the presence of bioactive compounds. From the Western blot analysis, a reduction in the MDA adduct formation was observed in cells treated with compounds that underlaid the beneficial effects of the compounds tested.

Abstract
Despite the fact that phytochemicals of Cornaceae species have long been discussed as possible auxiliary agents in contemporary treatment, the insights on their properties remain relatively scarce. This study focuses on Cornus mas L. (Cornelian cherry), the extracts of which are reported to exert a pleiotropic effect shown in both in vivo and in vitro studies. This study aimed to explore the cytotoxic effect of extracts from fruits of red (Cornus mas L. ‘Podolski’) and yellow (Cornus mas L. ‘Yantarnyi’ and ‘Flava’) Cornelian cherries on two melanoma cell lines (A375 and MeWo). The extracts were characterized in the context of the concentration of bioactive compounds of antioxidative properties. Cytotoxicity was investigated with the use of the following two assays: SRB and MTT. An additional, alternative protocol for the SRB assay was used in this study so as to account for possible bias. Cytotoxicity was assessed as a difference in the whole time series of cell viability, instead of analyzing differences in raw values (often found in the literature). Both extracts from Cornus mas L. induced cytotoxicity in both A375 and MeWo cell lines, although the response of these cells was different. Moreover, based on this study, there is no evidence for claiming a different magnitude of cytotoxicity between these two extracts.

Abstract
Background Temperature is involved in the regulation of carotenoid accumulation in many plants. The floral color of sweet osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans Lour.) which is mainly contributed by carotenoid content, is affected by temperature in autumn. However, the mechanism remains unknown. Here, to reveal how temperature regulates the floral color of sweet osmanthus, potted sweet osmanthus ‘Jinqiu Gui’ were treated by different temperatures (15 °C, 19 °C or 32 °C). The floral color, carotenoid content, and the expression level of carotenoid-related genes in petals of sweet osmanthus ‘Jinqiu Gui’ under different temperature treatments were investigated. Results Compared to the control (19 °C), high temperature (32 °C) changed the floral color from yellow to yellowish-white with higher lightness (L*) value and lower redness (a*) value, while low temperature (15 °C) turned the floral color from yellow to pale orange with decreased L* value and increased a* value. Total carotenoid content and the content of individual carotenoids (α-carotene, β-carotene, α-cryptoxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin) were inhibited by high temperature, but were enhanced by low temperature. Lower carotenoid accumulation under high temperature was probably attributed to transcriptional down-regulation of the biosynthesis gene OfPSY1, OfZ-ISO1 and OfLCYB1, and up-regulation of degradation genes OfNCED3, OfCCD1-1, OfCCD1-2, and OfCCD4-1. Up-regulation of OfLCYB1, and down-regulation of OfNCED3 and OfCCD4-1 were predicted to be involved in low-temperature-regulated carotenoid accumulation. Luciferase assays showed that the promoter activity of OfLCYB1 was activated by low temperature, and repressed by high temperature. However, the promoter activity of OfCCD4-1 was repressed by low temperature, and activated by high temperature. Conclusions Our study revealed that high temperature suppressed the floral coloration by repressing the expression of carotenoid biosynthesis genes, and activating the expression of carotenoid degradation genes. However, the relative low temperature had opposite effects on floral coloration and carotenoid biosynthesis in sweet osmanthus. These results will help reveal the regulatory mechanism of temperature on carotenoid accumulation in the petals of sweet osmanthus. Abstract
Microbes in marine ecosystems are known to produce secondary metabolites. One of which are carotenoids, which have numerous industrial applications, hence their demand will continue to grow. This review highlights the recent research on natural carotenoids produced by marine microorganisms. We discuss the most recent screening approaches for discovering carotenoids, using in vitro methods such as culture-dependent and culture-independent screening, as well as in silico methods, using secondary metabolite Biosynthetic Gene Clusters (smBGCs), which involves the use of various rule-based and machine-learning-based bioinformatics tools. Following that, various carotenoids are addressed, along with their biological activities and metabolic processes involved in carotenoids biosynthesis. Finally, we cover the application of carotenoids in health and pharmaceutical industries, current carotenoids production system, and potential use of synthetic biology in carotenoids production.

Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has continued to be the subject of study since its discovery nearly 40 years ago. Significant advances in research and intake of antiretroviral therapy (ART) have slowed the progression and appearance of the disease symptoms and the incidence of concomitant diseases, which are the leading cause of death in HIV+ persons. However, the prolongation of ART is closely related to chronic degenerative diseases and pathologies caused by oxidative stress (OS) and alterations in lipid metabolism (increased cholesterol levels), both of which are conditions of ART. Therefore, recent research focuses on using natural therapies to diminish the effects of ART and HIV infection: regulating lipid metabolism and reducing OS status. The present review summarizes current information on OS and cholesterol metabolism in HIV+ persons and how the consumption of certain phytochemicals can modulate these. For this purpose, MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases were consulted to identify publications investigating HIV disease and natural therapies and their associated effects.

Abstract
Beta-carotene (BC) is a well-known antioxidant. However, increasing evidence shows that under severe oxidative conditions, BC can become pro-oxidant, an effect that may be enhanced in the presence of iron (II). In our earlier studies, we observed that despite increasing heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) levels in the heart, the protective effects of BC have been lost when it was used at a high concentration. Since iron releases from heme as a consequence of HO-1 activity, we hypothesized that the application of an iron-chelator (IC) would reverse the lost cardiac protection associated with an elevated HO-1 level. Thus, in the present study, we investigated the effects of desferrioxiamine (DFO) in isolated, ischemic/reperfused rat hearts after long-term treatment with vehicle or high-dose (HD) BC. Vehicle or 150 mg/bw kg daily doses of BC were administered to the rats for 4 weeks, and then their hearts were removed and subjected to 30 min of global ischemia (ISA) followed by 120 min of reperfusion (REP). During the experiments, cardiac function was registered, and at the end of the REP period, infarct size (IS) and HO-1 expression were measured. The results show that DFO treatment alone during REP significantly ameliorated postischemic cardiac function and decreased IS, although HO-1 expression was not increased significantly. In hearts isolated from BC-treated rats, no cardioprotective effects, despite an elevated HO-1 level, were observed, while DFO administration after ISA resulted in a mild improvement in heart function and IS. Our results suggest that iron could have a role whether BC exerts antioxidant or pro-oxidant effects in ISA/REP-injured hearts.

Abstract
The endoperoxides of β-carotene (βCar-EPOs) are regarded as main products of the chemical deactivation of 1O2 by β-carotene, one of the most important antioxidants, following a concerted singlet-singlet reaction. Here we challenge this view by showing that βCar-EPOs are formed in the absence of 1O2 in a non-concerted triplet-triplet reaction: 3O2 + 3β-carotene → βCar-EPOs, in which 3β-carotene manifests a strong biradical character. Thus, the reactivity of β-carotene towards oxygen is governed by its excited triplet state. βCar-EPOs, while being stable in the dark, are photochemically labile, and are a rare example of nonaromatic endoperoxides that release 1O2, again not in a concerted reaction. Their light-induced breakdown triggers an avalanche of free radicals, which accounts for the pro-oxidant activity of β-carotene and the puzzling swap from its anti- to pro-oxidant features. Furthermore, we show that βCar-EPOs, and carotenoids in general, weakly sensitize 1O2. These findings underlie the key role of the triplet state in determining the chemical and photophysical features of β-carotene. They shake up the prevailing models of carotenoid photophysics, the anti-oxidant functioning of β-carotene, and the role of 1O2 in chemical signaling in biological photosynthetic systems. βCar-EPOs and their degradation products are not markers of 1O2 and oxidative stress but of the overproduction of extremely hazardous chlorophyll triplets in photosystems. Hence, the chemical signaling of overexcitation of the photosynthetic apparatus is based on a 3chlorophyll-3β-carotene relay, rather than on extremely short-lived 1O2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ice plant is a halophyte, known for its antioxidant activity and for being a highly functional food. It is capable of increasing its contents of health-promoting compounds when subjected to certain stresses such as salinity. The objective of this work was to determine the plant's best growing conditions to achieve both an optimal production of bioactive metabolites and high crop yield. Mesembryanthemum crystallinum were grown under semi-controlled conditions and four saline treatments were applied at: 0, 100, 200 and 300 mmol L-1 sodium chloride (NaCl), respectively. RESULTS The 100 mmol L-1 NaCl treatment induced a slight increase in shoot dry weight (DW) and enhanced the leaf area. At higher salinity levels, however, the shoot biomass decreased. The concentration of starch and total proteins declined as the concentration of salt increased, while the total soluble sugars (TSS) content was lower in 100 and 300 mmol L-1 NaCl treatments. Proline increased in conditions over 100 mmol L-1 NaCl. Furthermore, plants grown with 300 mmol L-1 of NaCl presented the highest values of glutathione, ascorbic acid and vitamin C. Antioxidant enzymes activity and total phenolics increased with the severity of the salinity. CONCLUSION Ice plant accumulates high levels of health-promoting compounds when grown with 300 mmol L-1 NaCl. A high concentration of beneficial compounds, however, is detrimental to the plant's growth. Moreover, 100 mmol L-1 NaCl treatment not only improved the concentration of bioactive and antioxidant compounds but also preserved the crop yield. It could thus be interesting to promote the cultivation of this high nutritional value plant in environments of moderate salinity. © 2021 The Authors. Abstract
Nutrition is of utmost importance in chronic disease management and has often been described as the cornerstone of a variety of non-communicable diseases. In particular, type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a prevalent and global public health crisis. Lycopene, a bright red carotenoid hydrocarbon found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, has been extensively studied for its biological activities and treatment efficiency in diabetes care. Epidemiological investigations indicate that lycopene has potential antioxidant properties, is capable of scavenging reactive species, and alleviates oxidative stress in T2DM patients. This review aims to summarize the characteristics and mechanisms of action of lycopene as a potent antioxidant for T2DM. In addition, the evidence demonstrating the effects of lycopene on glycemic control and oxidative stress biomarkers in T2DM are also highlighted using animal and human studies as literature approach.

Abstract
AbstractThe presented method is focused on simultaneous determination of retinol and two carotenoids (lutein, β-carotene) in selected Malaysian food products. A Dionex Ultimate 3000 Series High-Performance Liquid Chromatography system equipped with two Dionex Acclaim Polar Advantage II C18 columns was utilized in this study. Simultaneous elution of retinol, lutein and β-carotene was achieved within 45 min with gradient profile of methanol and ultra-pure water (95:5–100:0–95:5) programmed at 0.8 mL/min flow rate and 30 °C. Retinol was acquired at 325 nm while lutein and β-carotene were acquired at 440 nm. Limits of detection and quantification of retinol and lutein were at 0.10, 0.34 µg/mL, and 0.08, 0.26 µg/mL; respectively while higher levels were observed for β-carotene at 1.06 and 3.54 µg/mL. Linearity test indicated R2 of 0.996–0.999, along with high accuracy (71.92–116.29%) and excellent repeatability for all analytes. Extraction efficiency was determined using standard addition into representative food product with recovery obtained in the range of 61.86–116.90% for all three analytes. The developed in-house HPLC method incorporates an enclosed solid-phase extraction system that is believed to further improve sample purification and analytes detection. On the whole, the developed on-line SPE-HPLC technique and efficient sample pre-treatment is deemed a reliable approach for simultaneous determination of retinol, lutein and β-carotene, as analyzed among the selected Malaysian food products. Additionally, the described procedure could also benefit routine analysis of these analytes in other food matrices or for determination of other analytes with similar chemistry and faster elution.

Abstract
Fasciolosis causes public health problems and economic losses all over the world. The present study aimed to evaluate the synergistic action between Viteselen (anti-oxidant) and specific anti-Fasciola drug [Triclalbendazole (TCBZ)] for improving the body condition of F. gigantica naturally infected sheep with reference to some hematological and biochemical biomarkers in their sera. Animals were divided into five groups include G-1 as control non-infected animals, G-2 to G-5 are Fasciola naturally infected animals. G-2 are non-treated animals, G-3 treated with TCBZ, animals in G-4 were injected by Viteselen and those in G-5 were treated by both TCBZ and Viteselen. The results revealed a significant decrease in mean eggs in feces and F. gigantica circulating antigens (FCAg) in sera of TCBZ treated sheep after the 1st week post treatment. Complete disappearance of eggs from feces of drug treated groups was recorded at 21st d.p.t. While the value of FCAg decreased to negative at 14th d.p.t. The highest significant improvement (p < 0.05) in the estimated hematological parameters (RBCs, Hb and TLC), liver enzymes (AST and ALT), oxidative stress and anti-oxidant markers (TAC, MDA, SOD and GSH) and reproductive hormones (Progesterone and Estradiol) was recorded in animals in G-5 followed by G-3. While non-significant improvement was recorded in animals in G-4 in comparison with those in the control group. This improvement increased with increasing the time post treatment. In conclusion; using of Viteselen in association with specific anti-parasitic drug improved the general health parameters and reproductive performance of the investigated sheep.
