Abstract
The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between the consumption of fruits, vegetables and adherence to the Mediterranean diet with childhood asthma development and severity. A systematic literature search and synthesis of the results was performed throughout the last two decades. A total of 45 studies were analysed and 392,797 children were included. Greater adherence to a Mediterranean type of diet was inversely associated with asthmatic outcomes (OR:0.71,95% CI:0.54,0.88). Regarding fruits, vegetables consumption, a significant inverse association between increased fruits or vegetable intake and asthma was found (OR:0.82,95% CI:0.77,0.86; 0.84,95% CI:0.77,0.91, respectively). Fruits and vegetables consumption combined was also inversely related to all asthmatic outcomes (OR:0.65,95% CI:0.49,0.78). The level of heterogeneity was moderate-to-high (30%-97%). The present review and meta-analysis show a trend to an inverse association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet or a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and the occurrence of childhood asthma but with a low level of certainty.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over the last decades, dietary habits in developing countries have been characterized by low intake of fruits and vegetables and high consumption of sweetened drinks. Most of the evidence linking carbohydrate intake and asthma comes from children over 6 years of age. The aim of this study was to examine the association between macronutrient intake and the severity of asthma exacerbations in children aged 2-6 years. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study that included all children aged 2-6 years hospitalized due to an asthma exacerbation. Dietary data were collected using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) validated in the Colombian population. The GINA classification of acute asthma was used to define the severity. To identify factors independently associated with asthma exacerbation severity, we fit the data to ordinal logistic regression. RESULTS During the study period, 228 cases of patients with asthma exacerbation were included. Asthma severity was dose-dependently associated with protein and carbohydrate-rich intake. The variables included in the multivariable analysis included reactive C protein (OR 1.05, CI 95% (1.03-1.07)), smoking at home (OR 3.92 (1.82-8.44)), atopic dermatitis (OR 3.82 (1.59-9.21)), and protein and carbohydrate-rich food intake (OR 0.11 (0.03-0.33)) and (OR 2.42 (1.09-5.80)), respectively. CONCLUSION High carbohydrate-rich food intake is associated with the severity of asthma exacerbation adjusted by other known risk factors such as atopy, smoking, and reactive C protein. This evidence should motivate the development of public health policies to control the consumption of sugar-rich products in children under 6 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the microbiome has an established role in asthma development, less is known about its contribution to morbidity in children with asthma. OBJECTIVE In this ancillary study of the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial (VDAART), we analyzed the gut microbiome and metabolome of wheeze frequency in children with asthma. METHODS Bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA microbiome and untargeted metabolomic profiling were performed on fecal samples collected from 3-year-old children with parent-reported physician-diagnosed asthma. We analyzed wheeze frequency by calculating the proportion of quarterly questionnaires administered between ages 3 and 5 years in which parents reported the child had wheezed (wheeze proportion). Taxa and metabolites associated with wheeze were analyzed by identifying log fold changes with respect to wheeze frequency and correlation/linear regression analyses, respectively. Microbe-metabolite and microbe-microbe correlation networks were compared between subjects with high and low wheeze proportion. RESULTS Specific taxa, including the genus Veillonella and histidine pathway metabolites, were enriched in subjects with high wheeze proportion. Among wheeze-associated taxa, Veillonella and Oscillospiraceae UCG-005, which was inversely associated with wheeze, were correlated with the greatest number of fecal metabolites. Microbial networks were similar between subjects with low versus high wheeze frequency. CONCLUSION Gut microbiome features are associated with wheeze frequency in children with asthma, suggesting an impact of the gut microbiome on morbidity in childhood asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor diet quality may contribute to the disproportionate asthma burden in Puerto Rican youth. OBJECTIVE To examine whether an unhealthy diet at one or two study visits conducted over about 5 years was associated with asthma, severe asthma exacerbations, and worse lung function in Puerto Rican youth. METHODS This was a prospective study of 406 Puerto Rican youth aged 6 to 14 years at a baseline visit and 9 to 20 years at a follow-up visit. As in prior work, diet was assessed using a dietary score ranging from -2 to +2. The exposure of interest was an unhealthy diet, defined as a nonpositive dietary score (0 to -2) at one or both visits. Outcomes of interest were asthma (defined as physician-diagnosed asthma and one of more episode of wheeze in the year before the second visit), one or more severe asthma exacerbation in the year before the second visit, and change in percent predicted lung function measures (FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC) between the first and second visits. RESULTS In a multivariable analysis, an unhealthy diet at both visits was associated with increased odds of asthma (adjusted odds ratio = 3.38; 95% confidence interval, 1.74-6.57) and severe asthma exacerbations (adjusted odds ratio = 2.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.16-6.03), but not with change in lung function. CONCLUSIONS An unhealthy diet at both visits was associated with increased odds of asthma and severe asthma exacerbations, compared with a healthy diet at both visits. Our findings support health policies promoting a healthy diet in Puerto Rican youth, a population at high risk for asthma.

Association between Diet Quality and Adolescent Wheezing: Effect Modification by Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure. Ann Am Thorac Soc 2022; 19:1328-1337. Abstract
RATIONALE Protective effects of a high quality diet on respiratory health, particularly among youths exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), are unknown. OBJECTIVES To assess if a higher quality diet is associated with improved respiratory symptoms and lung function among adolescents, and if these associations are modified by ETS exposure. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study on 7,026 nonsmoking adolescents of the 2003-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Diet quality was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index-2010 score (HEI-2010), categorized into quintiles. ETS exposure was measured using serum cotinine, dichotomized as high (>2.99 ng/ml) or low (≤2.99 ng/ml). Outcomes included the presence of wheezing and cough symptoms in the past 12 months, and in a sub-group, spirometric lung function. Survey-design adjusted logistic and linear models evaluated associations between diet and 1) respiratory symptoms and 2) lung function, respectively, and assessed the interaction between HEI-2010 and serum cotinine. RESULTS While there were no significant associations between diet quality and respiratory symptoms, there was a significant interaction between HEI-2010 and serum cotinine on wheezing (pint = 0.011). In models stratified by serum cotinine, adolescents with high serum cotinine and the healthiest diet (5th quintile HEI-2010) experienced lower wheezing odds (OR, 0.10; 95% CI, 0.02-0.61), compared to those with the poorest diet (1st quintile HEI-2010). In contrast, among adolescents with low serum cotinine, there were no significant differences in any respiratory symptoms between those with the highest, compared to the lowest diet quality. Of the sub-group with spirometry data (n = 3,166), there was a trend towards better lung function with improving diet quality, although this did not achieve statistical significance. There was no effect modification by ETS exposure on the relationship between diet quality and lung function. CONCLUSIONS Consuming a higher quality diet was associated with lower wheezing odds in adolescents with substantial ETS exposure. While longitudinal studies are needed, public health interventions to improve diet quality in vulnerable, environmentally-exposed populations merit consideration.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore associations between non-cholesterol sterol concentrations in breast milk and allergic outcomes in children aged two. Data from the KOALA Birth Cohort Study, the Netherlands, were used. Non-cholesterol sterols were analyzed by gas–liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry in breast milk sampled one-month postpartum (N = 311). Sterols were selected for each allergic outcome, i.e., eczema, wheeze, and allergic sensitization, prior to analyses. Associations between the selected sterols with allergic outcomes were analyzed using multiple logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs). The odds of eczema in the first two years of life were lower with higher concentrations of cholestanol (OR (95%CI): 0.98 (0.95; 1.00), p = 0.04), lanosterol (0.97 (0.95; 1.00), p = 0.02), lathosterol (0.93 (0.87; 0.99), p = 0.02), and stigmasterol (0.51 (0.29; 0.91), p = 0.02) in breast milk sampled one-month postpartum. None of the sterols were associated with wheeze in the first two years of life. The odds of allergic sensitization at age two were lower with higher concentrations of campesterol in breast milk (OR (95%CI): 0.81 (0.70; 0.95), p = 0.01). In conclusion, our data suggest that exposure to higher non-cholesterol sterol concentrations in breast milk may indeed be associated with the prevention of allergic outcomes in the first two years of life.

Exploring the Relation between Atopic Diseases and Lifestyle Patterns among Adolescents Living in Greece: Evidence from the Greek Global Asthma Network (GAN) Cross-Sectional Study. Abstract
Introduction: Diet and physical activity might be associated with the risk of allergic diseases in childhood. However, evidence in literature is sparse and diverse. We aim to examine the associations between four healthy dietary consumption pattern drinks, plus the adherence to a physically active lifestyle with atopic diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis and eczema) in adolescence and their relative importance. Methods: A total of 1934 adolescents (921 boys, 47.5%) and their parents completed a validated questionnaire assessing atopic diseases’ symptoms prevalence in the past 12 months, as well as nutritional and physical activity information. Four healthy dietary and one physical active lifestyle patterns were identified and logistic regression was applied to assess their relation with allergic diseases. Results: A high weekly consumption of fruits, vegetables and pulses and low consumption of unhealthy foods was negatively associated with all atopic symptoms while adherence to a physical active lifestyle was inversely associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms and dairy products with asthma and eczema symptoms in the past 12 months after adjustment for several confounders (all p < 0.05). Fruits, vegetables and pulses consumption per week emerged as the most important lifestyle pattern negatively associated for all atopic diseases, after the adjustment for all the remaining lifestyle patterns and confounders (all p < 0.05) Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a high fruit, vegetable and pulse intake should be the first lifestyle intervention every clinician and public health care worker evolving in the management of atopic adolescents should encourage and promote.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been suggested to counteract the oxidative stress and inflammation that characterize asthma. We aimed to assess the association between vegetable and fruit diversity consumption and asthma and its related outcomes in school-aged children. METHODS Participants included 647 children (49% females, aged 7-12 years) recruited from 20 public schools across the city of Porto, in Portugal. Vegetable intake and fruit intake were ascertained using a single self-reported 24-hour recall questionnaire. A diversity score was built taking into account the different number of individual vegetables and fruits consumed and categorized into two groups based on the total reported median consumption, which was rounded to the nearest whole number (≤3 and >3, for vegetables; and ≤1 and >1, for fruits). A questionnaire was used to enquire about self-reported medical diagnosis of asthma and respiratory symptoms. Airway inflammation was assessed measuring exhaled fractional nitric oxide concentration (eNO) and was categorized into two groups (<35 and ≥35 ppb). The association between fruit and vegetable diversity and respiratory outcomes was examined using logistic regression models, adjusting for confounders. RESULTS A higher vegetable diversity consumption per day was negatively associated with having self-reported asthma (OR = 0.67; 95% CI 0.47, 0.95), while having a vegetable diversity consumption superior to 3 items per day was negatively associated with levels of eNO ≥ 35 ppb (OR = 0.38; 95% CI 0.16, 0.88) and breathing difficulties (OR = 0.39; 95% CI 0.16, 0.97). CONCLUSION Eating a greater variety of vegetables was associated with a lower chance of airway inflammation and prevalence of self-reported asthma in school children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early life exposure in the uterus had a long-term effect on children's health. As the prevalence of allergies is increasing with a remarkable sex difference, very few studies have traced back to their early origins. We sought to investigate if maternal behavioral exposure, herein sleep, physical activity, and screen time during pregnancy is associated with childhood respiratory allergies. The sex difference would be examined. METHODS Six thousand two hundred thirty-six mother-child pairs from Shanghai Children Allergy Study (SCAS) were enrolled, The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire was adopted to evaluate respiratory allergic diseases. RESULTS 14.6, 16.2, and 21.0% of children had asthma, wheeze, and allergic rhinitis, respectively. Maternal short sleep duration, lack of physical activity, and too much screen exposure during pregnancy could increase the risk of childhood respiratory allergies, however, the significance was found only in males. Moreover, a dose-response trend was clearly shown, any two of the three combined could increase the risk (OR,1.921; 95% CI,1.217-3.033), and the coexistence of all three further amplified the risk (OR,2.412; 95% CI,1.489-3.906). The findings can be verified in allergen test subgroup and each single type of respiratory allergies in most cases. CONCLUSIONS Maternal unhealthy behaviors during pregnancy could increase the risk of childhood respiratory allergies with a dose-response pattern. Males were more susceptible to the association. The identification of modifiable maternal risk behaviors lies in the emphasis of intervention in early life to face up increasing childhood allergies.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Information on the association between maternal prepregnancy body weight, gestational weight change, and childhood allergies is not consistent. Little is known on whether there is a combined association with comprehensive childhood allergies. OBJECTIVE To examine the association of maternal prepregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain (GWG) with the risk of childhood allergic diseases including asthma and/or wheezing, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and food and/or drug allergy. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This cross-sectional study was conducted from April 12 to June 1, 2019, using the Shanghai Children Allergy Study (SCAS), a large, population-based survey. A multistage and multistrata sampling approach was applied to conduct the survey in 13 districts across Shanghai, China, with an enrollment of 15 145 mother-child pairs. EXPOSURES Reported maternal weight before pregnancy and at the time of delivery were requested in the survey; GWG was examined in absolute terms and with reference to the Institute of Medicine guideline. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The ascertainment of allergic diseases was based on the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire. RESULTS Among 15 145 children aged 3 to 14 years (7911 [52.2%] boys) within the SCAS, 8877 children (58.6%) were screened for allergic diseases. Multivariable log-binomial regression models suggested that excessive GWG was associated with risks of 19% for asthma/wheezing, 11% for allergic rhinitis, and 10% for eczema in the children. Gestational weight gain extremely above the Institute of Medicine guideline in women who were overweight/obese before pregnancy was associated with the highest risk of childhood asthma/wheezing (adjusted prevalence ratio, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.16-1.74; P = .001), allergic rhinitis (adjusted prevalence ratio, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.12-1.56; P = .001), and eczema (adjusted prevalence ratio, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.08-1.41; P = .002). Gestational weight gain below the Institute of Medicine guideline was associated with an attenuated risk of 13% for childhood asthma/wheezing, 11% for allergic rhinitis, 14% for eczema, and 15% food/drug allergy when mothers were of prepregnancy normal weight; similar associations were observed in underweight mothers, but there was no association in overweight mothers. Generally, the associations were similar in the stratified analysis according to children's age group. Moreover, the results were similar in the allergen test subgroup. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The findings of this study suggest that excessive GWG may be a risk factor for childhood allergic diseases. Further studies on the long-term effects of the intrauterine environment on children's health may take maternal weight management during pregnancy into consideration since GWG could be a controllable and modifiable risk factor.

Abstract
Human body surfaces, such as the skin, intestines, and respiratory and urogenital tracts, are colonized by a large number of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, with the gut being the most densely and extensively colonized organ. The microbiome plays an essential role in immune system development and tissue homeostasis. Gut microbiota dysbiosis not only modulates the immune responses of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract but also impacts the immunity of distal organs, such as the lung, further affecting lung health and respiratory diseases. Here, we review the recent evidence of the correlations and underlying mechanisms of the relationship between the gut microbiota and common respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), lung cancer, and respiratory infection, and probiotic development as a therapeutic intervention for these diseases.

Abstract
Aim In recent years, mobile applications have been developed for health education purposes. The aim of this study was to determine whether Telegram-based virtual education versus in-person education can be effective for improving the quality of life in adolescents with moderate-to-severe asthma. Design A single-blind randomized trial. Methods Participants were 64 adolescents aged 12-19 years and were equally assigned randomly to group A (Telegram-based education) and group B (in-person education) during 22 June 2017-19 February 2018. The educational contents were similar for both groups. The Mini Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire was used prior to intervention and 5 weeks postintervention for both groups of adolescents. Results A statistically significant increase was observed in the quality of life in both groups (p < .001). After controlling the quality-of-life scores, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of the mean score for the quality of life and its domains (p < .05).

Abstract
Background: Asthma continues to be the leading chronic disease affecting children in the United States. With mounting evidence of how diet plays a role in both chronic and allergic diseases, it is important to identify types of foods that may potentially promote a pro-inflammatory state. The study aims to examine the association between current asthma prevalence and intake of specific foods among children in California. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducting secondary analysis of data from the 2001 to 2015 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) child surveys. A total of 65,565 completed surveys met the eligibility criteria (children ages 2-11) between the years 2001 and 2015. After excluding children with less than 2 years of age (for whom diet questions were not asked), analysis was conducted using 56,312 surveys. Multivariable logistic regression models estimated the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for the association of dietary intake with current asthma, controlling for confounding variables: gender, age, race, weight status, parent's education, English language proficiency of parent, household income, and location of residence. Analyses were survey weighted using raking variables to adjust for the oversampling and nonresponse surveys to reflect California Department of Finance Population Estimates for each survey period. Results: Approximately 13.4% of children in California currently have asthma. Consuming three or more sodas per day (adjusted OR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.22-2.76, P = 0.004), two or more servings of French fries per day (adjusted odds ratio = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.08-3.21, P = 0.026), and fast food two or more times per week (adjusted odds ratio = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.02-1.45, P = 0.031) were positively associated with the prevalence for asthma. Conclusion: Analysis showed that children consuming energy dense foods were significantly associated with greater odds for current asthma after controlling for potential confounders.

Abstract
Dietary antioxidant intake has been hypothesised to influence lung function. The association between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the diet at age 8 years and lung function development up to 16 years in 2307 participants from the Swedish population-based birth cohort BAMSE (Children, Allergy, Milieu, Stockholm, Epidemiology) was investigated. Information on TAC was obtained from a food frequency questionnaire at 8 years. Lung function was measured by spirometry at 8 and 16 years, impulse oscillometry (IOS) and exhaled nitric oxide fraction (FeNO) at 16 years. Low lung function was defined as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) z-score below the 25th percentile. Longitudinal associations between TAC and lung function were analysed by mixed effect models adjusted for potential confounders. Stratification by asthma at 8 years was performed to examine effect modification. The median TAC intake was 10 067 μmol Trolox equivalents (TE)·g−1, with males having a lower mean compared to females (9963 versus 10 819 μmol TE·g−1). In analyses of lung function change between 8 and 16 years, there were no statistically significant associations between TAC in tertiles and spirometry results for the total study population. Among children with asthma at 8 years (prevalence 7%), higher TAC was associated with higher mean FEV1 (0.46 sd, 95% CI 0.11–0.80) and decreased odds of low lung function at 16 years (OR 0.28, 95% CI 0.12–0.65). There were no associations between TAC and forced vital capacity or IOS/FeNO results. High dietary antioxidant intake in school age may be associated with improved lung function development from school age to adolescence among children with asthma. Dietary antioxidant intake at school age may influence lung function development as measured by FEV1 up to adolescence among children with asthma. Abstract
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most prevalent allergic disease in children and can be associated with asthma (A); this association can have significant effect on child's quality of life. The objective of this work was to systematically review existing literature on the risk factors of AR and A in children to better understand the link between these two diseases. We performed a literature search over the last 25 years in PubMed and Medline. Inclusion criteria comprised English language papers containing original human data with greater than 30 subjects and papers that statistically analyze the relationship between AR and A and the risk factor(s), in children population. A statistically significant correlation was found between children with AR and A and ambient Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons exposure, live in an industrialized city with elevated traffic, dampness and moulds exposure, electric cooking, male gender, single nucleotide polymorphisms in PTNP22 gene and CTLA-4 gene, fast food and margarine products consumption, use of paracetamol in last year, history of tuberculosis, parental atopy, high total serum IgE, antibiotics in uterus and infections in uterus exposure, history of formula feeding and caesarian section. A strong and complex link between AR and A was accounted: A represents a major risk factor for the onset of AR, that correlates with more severe asthmatic symptoms. Even the onset of A in a child with AR worsen it. The interaction of genetic and environmental risk factors and the consequent epigenetic, microbiota and immunological changes, were found to led to the development of AR and A in children, with both atopic and non-atopic pathways. Close monitoring of evidenced risk factors may help with an early recognize and treat A in patients with AR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Asthma and obesity are prevalent chronic childhood diseases that commonly co-occur in youth from low-income, minority backgrounds. Diet is a known risk factor for obesity; however, its role in asthma/obesity comorbidity is not well established. This analysis examined the association between diet and lung function and effect modification by weight status. METHODS Lung function (FEV1 % predicted), anthropometric, and dietary data were collected from 95 children, ages 7-9 years old with persistent asthma, from low-income, urban communities in the United States. Associations between lung function, diet and weight status were examined using multivariable linear regression. RESULTS There were no significant differences in dietary intake between children with persistent asthma with and without obesity; however, >85% of participants did not meet recommendations for fruit, vegetable, and whole grain intake for their age and sex. Only intake of fruit (whole fruit and juice) was significantly associated with FEV1 % predicted (-3.36; 95% CI: -6.5 to -0.2). CONCLUSIONS Diet quality was poor in this sample, independent of weight status. More research is needed to understand the relationship between diet, lung function, and weight status, so that interventions can be developed to concurrently address obesity and weight.

Abstract
To date, exposure studies linking dust-mite allergens with asthma and allergic morbidities have typically relied on sampling from representative locations in the home for exposure assessment. We determine the effects of differing microenvironments allergen exposures on asthma and asthma severity among 25 case and 31 control preschool children in Singapore. Blo t 5 allergen levels in various niches from the children's home and day-care microenvironments as well as their Blo t 5 time-weighted concentrations were determined. Eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) levels from the children's saliva as markers for airway inflammation were obtained. Salivary ECP levels were higher in children with asthma than those without and the strength of association increased with higher salivary ECP levels. Although there was no relationship between time-weighted Blo t 5 concentrations with salivary ECP levels among the controls, a positive statistically significant relationship was noted among cases, demonstrating the effects of cumulative exposure on asthma severity. Avoidance measures to reduce Blo t 5 allergen exposure should include all microenvironments that asthmatic children are exposed throughout the day.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The intestinal metabolome reflects the biological consequences of diverse exposures and might provide insight into asthma pathophysiology. OBJECTIVE We sought to perform an untargeted integrative analysis of the intestinal metabolome of childhood asthma in this ancillary study of the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial. METHODS Metabolomic profiling was performed by using mass spectrometry on fecal samples collected from 361 three-year-old subjects. Adjusted logistic regression analyses identified metabolites and modules of highly correlated metabolites associated with asthma diagnosis by age 3 years. Sparse canonical correlation analysis identified associations relevant to asthma between the intestinal metabolome and other "omics": the intestinal microbiome as measured by using 16S rRNA sequencing, the plasma metabolome as measured by using mass spectrometry, and diet as measured by using food frequency questionnaires. RESULTS Several intestinal metabolites were associated with asthma at age 3 years, including inverse associations between asthma and polyunsaturated fatty acids (adjusted logistic regression β = -6.3; 95% CI, -11.3 to -1.4; P = .01) and other lipids. Asthma-associated intestinal metabolites were significant mediators of the inverse relationship between exclusive breast-feeding for the first 4 months of life and asthma (P for indirect association = .04) and the positive association between a diet rich in meats and asthma (P = .03). Specific intestinal bacterial taxa, including the family Christensenellaceae, and plasma metabolites, including γ-tocopherol/β-tocopherol, were positively associated with asthma and asthma-associated intestinal metabolites. CONCLUSION Integrative analyses revealed significant interrelationships between the intestinal metabolome and the intestinal microbiome, plasma metabolome, and diet in association with childhood asthma. These findings require replication in future studies.

Abstract
Less than 10% of most Western populations consume adequate levels of whole fruits and dietary fiber with typical intake being about half of the recommended levels. Evidence of the beneficial health effects of consuming adequate levels of whole fruits has been steadily growing, especially regarding their bioactive fiber prebiotic effects and role in improved weight control, wellness and healthy aging. The primary aim of this narrative review article is to examine the increasing number of health benefits which are associated with the adequate intake of whole fruits, especially fruit fiber, throughout the human lifecycle. These potential health benefits include: protecting colonic gastrointestinal health (e.g., constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel diseases, and diverticular disease); promoting long-term weight management; reducing risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome; defending against colorectal and lung cancers; improving odds of successful aging; reducing the severity of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; enhancing psychological well-being and lowering the risk of depression; contributing to higher bone mineral density in children and adults; reducing risk of seborrheic dermatitis; and helping to attenuate autism spectrum disorder severity. Low whole fruit intake represents a potentially more serious global population health threat than previously recognized, especially in light of the emerging research on whole fruit and fruit fiber health benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although both consumptions of ultra-processed products and asthma are common during adolescence, the epidemiological evidence in regarding their association is unclear. We investigated the associations of ultra-processed products consumption with asthma and wheezing in a representative sample of Brazilian adolescents. METHODS We used data from a representative sample of 109 104 Brazilian adolescents enrolled in the National Survey of School Health, 2012. The consumption of ultra-processed products was based on the weekly consumption (0-2, 3-4, ≥5 d/wk) of sweet biscuits, salty biscuits, ultra-processed meats, sweets/candies, soft drinks, and packaged snacks over the previous 7 days. We also calculated an ultra-processed consumption score by adding partial scores corresponding to weekly frequency intake of each ultra-processed product. The ultra-processed consumption score ranged from 0 to 42, the higher score, the higher the intake of these products. The presence of wheezing in the previous 12 months and asthma at any time in the past was self-reported. RESULTS The adjusted odds ratios of asthma comparing the extreme categories ranged from 1.08 (95% CI 1.03-1.13) for sweets/candies to 1.30 (1.21-1.40) for ultra-processed meats. Similar magnitude of associations was found for wheezing outcome. The ultra-processed consumption score was positively associated with the presence of asthma and wheezing in a dose-response manner. The adjusted OR of asthma and wheezing comparing highest to lowest quintile of ultra-processed consumption score was 1.27 (95% CI 1.15-1.41) and 1.42 (1.35-1.50), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The consumption of ultra-processed products was positively associated with the presence of asthma and wheezing in adolescents.
