Resource partitioning by evergreen and deciduous species in a tropical dry forest

Chronological dataset of soil respiration fluxes from a seasonally dry forest in Northwest México

Soil respiration (CO2 emission to the atmosphere from soils) is an important component of the global carbon cycle. In highly seasonal ecosystems the magnitudes and the underlying mechanisms that control soil respiration (RS) are still poorly understood and measurements are underrepresented in the global flux community. In this dataset, systematic and monthly measurements of RS were conducted with an infrared gas analyzer coupled to a static chamber during 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 in a tropical dry forest with a land use history from Northwestern México. These data is useful to assess the intra-annual and seasonal variations of RS at a highly seasonal dry forests and serves as a base line to benchmark soil carbon models in regional and global contexts. The data presented supports the research manuscript: "Soil respiration is influenced by seasonality, forest succession and contrasting biophysical controls in a tropical dry forest in Northwestern Mexico" from Vargas-Terminel et al. [1].

The global biogeography of tree leaf form and habit

Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling.

Functional traits mediate individualistic species-environment distributions at broad spatial scales while fine-scale species associations remain unpredictable

PREMISE

Numerous processes influence plant distributions and co-occurrence patterns, including ecological sorting, limiting similarity, and stochastic effects. To discriminate among these processes and determine the spatial scales at which they operate, we investigated how functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness influence the distribution of temperate forest herbs.

METHODS

We surveyed understory plant communities across 257 forest stands in Wisconsin and Michigan (USA) and applied Bayesian phylogenetic linear mixed-effects models (PGLMMs) to quantify how functional traits and phylogenetic relatedness influence the environmental distribution of 139 herbaceous plant species along broad edaphic, climatic, and light gradients. These models also allowed us to test how functional and phylogenetic similarity affect species co-occurrence within microsites.

RESULTS

Leaf height, specific leaf area, and seed mass all influenced individualistic plant distributions along landscape-scale gradients in soil texture, soil fertility, light availability, and climate. In contrast, phylogenetic relationships did not consistently predict species-environment relationships. Neither functionally similar nor phylogenetically related herbs segregated among microsites within forest stands.

CONCLUSIONS

Trait-mediated ecological sorting appears to drive temperate-forest community assembly, generating individualistic plant distributions along regional environmental gradients. This finding links classic studies in plant ecology and prior research in plant physiological ecology to current trait-based approaches in community ecology. However, our results fail to support the common assumption that limiting similarity governs local plant co-occurrences. Strong ecological sorting among forest stands coupled with stochastic fine-scale interactions among species appear to weaken deterministic, niche-based assembly processes at local scales.

Higher leaf nitrogen content is linked to tighter stomatal regulation of transpiration and more efficient water use across dryland trees

The least-cost economic theory of photosynthesis shows that water and nitrogen are mutually substitutable resources to achieve a given carbon gain. However, vegetation in the Sahel has to cope with the dual challenge imposed by drought and nutrient-poor soils. We addressed how variation in leaf nitrogen per area (N_area ) modulates leaf oxygen and carbon isotopic composition (δ¹⁸ O, δ¹³ C), as proxies of stomatal conductance and water-use efficiency, across 34 Sahelian woody species. Dryland species exhibited diverging leaf δ¹⁸ O and δ¹³ C values, indicating large interspecific variation in time-integrated stomatal conductance and water-use efficiency. Structural equation modeling revealed that leaf N_area is a pivotal trait linked to multiple water-use traits. Leaf N_area was positively linked to both δ¹⁸ O and δ¹³ C, suggesting higher carboxylation capacity and tighter stomatal regulation of transpiration in N-rich species, which allows them to achieve higher water-use efficiency and more conservative water use. These adaptations represent a key physiological advantage of N-rich species, such as legumes, that could contribute to their dominance across many dryland regions. This is the first report of a robust mechanistic link between leaf N_area and δ¹⁸ O in dryland vegetation that is consistent with core principles of plant physiology.

Microhabitat partitioning is driven by preferences, not competition, in two Costa Rican millipede species

The co-occurrence of similar species in a particular environment may be facilitated if they specialise on different microhabitats, reducing competition between them. In some cases, two species prefer the same microhabitat, but one is competitively excluded to its harsh margins. In this study, we assessed microhabitat preferences and competition between two species of millipedes in Costa Rica. (1) We observed them in the wild and found Nyssodesmus python most often on wood, less often on leaves, and rarely on rocks. Spirobolida was found most often on leaves, less often on wood, and never on rocks. (2) We tested their preferences in the lab and found that N. python preferred wood to rocks, wood to leaves, and rocks to leaves. Spirobolida preferred leaves to rocks, leaves to wood, and wood to rocks. (3) We tested interference competition by placing both species together in an arena in which they both had the same preference (wood vs. rocks). Both species chose to cohabitate in the same wood, indicating that one species did not directly exclude the other. In N. python and Spirobolida, co-occurrence is facilitated by differences in microhabitat preferences and not because competition forces one species out of its preferred microhabitat.

Stomatal development in the cycad family Zamiaceae

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

The gymnosperm order Cycadales is pivotal to our understanding of seed-plant phylogeny because of its phylogenetic placement close to the root node of extant spermatophytes and its combination of both derived and plesiomorphic character states. Although widely considered a 'living fossil' group, extant cycads display a high degree of morphological and anatomical variation. We investigate stomatal development in Zamiaceae to evaluate variation within the order and homologies between cycads and other seed plants.

METHODS

Leaflets of seven species across five genera representing all major clades of Zamiaceae were examined at various stages of development using light microscopy and confocal microscopy.

KEY RESULTS

All genera examined have lateral subsidiary cells of perigenous origin that differ from other pavement cells in mature leaflets and could have a role in stomatal physiology. Early epidermal patterning in a 'quartet' arrangement occurs in Ceratozamia, Zamia and Stangeria. Distal encircling cells, which are sclerified at maturity, are present in all genera except Bowenia, which shows relatively rapid elongation and differentiation of the pavement cells during leaflet development.

CONCLUSIONS

Stomatal structure and development in Zamiaceae highlights some traits that are plesiomorphic in seed plants, including the presence of perigenous encircling subsidiary cells, and reveals a clear difference between the developmental trajectories of cycads and Bennettitales. Our study also shows an unexpected degree of variation among subclades in the family, potentially linked to differences in leaflet development and suggesting convergent evolution in cycads.

Consequences of drought severity for tropical live oak (Quercus oleoides) in Mesoamerica

In two Costa Rican and three Honduran sites that vary in rainfall and soil properties, we used natural isotopes, a soil water balance model, and broad-scale climate-based drought indices to study shifts in water use with ontogeny from seedlings to mature tropical live oak (Quercus oleoides) trees. Water use patterns help to explain persistence of this broadly distributed species in Mesoamerica and to evaluate likely threats of ongoing climate changes. At the end of the dry season, soil δ¹⁸ O profiles can be described by one-phase exponential decay curves. Minimum values reflect geographic origins of the last significant rain event, and curvature is inversely related to canopy closure, demonstrating its role in controlling topsoil evaporation. Partitioning of soil water sources for transpiration was analyzed with a mixing model. In the Costa Rican sites, in a relatively dry year, saplings and mature trees took up water from the upper soil. In a relatively wet year in the Honduran sites, we observed deeper water extraction. In all sites, soil storage dampens extreme variation in water availability. The size dependence of water uptake with larger stems exploiting deeper layers is translated into variation in bulk leaf δ¹³ C-based water use efficiency (WUE) with the exception of mature trees. From 1932 to 2015, drought severity was evaluated with the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) concurrently with simulations of the soil water balance model. Drought occurrence increased, regardless of the time period, averaged across 6, 12, or 24 months. All ontogenetic stages in all populations experienced frequent water limitation. We found evidence for linear trends toward aridification with increases of return periods of drought for October SPEI-24 declining from 42 to 6 yr in Costa Rica and from 21 to 7 yr in Honduras and recent occurrence of multiyear droughts from 2013 to 2016. October SPEI-12 and SPEI-24 were significantly related to the Oceanic Niño Indices demonstrating that local inter-annual variations in drought severity in Mesoamerica are modulated by large-scale climate forces. Drought severity in the near-term future depends on the extent to which the Pacific will adopt a more La Niña-like vs. a more El Niño-like state under ongoing climatic changes.

The Accumulated Response of Deciduous Liquidambar formosana Hance and Evergreen Cyclobalanopsis glauca Thunb. Seedlings to Simulated Nitrogen Additions

Nitrogen depositions in the Yangtze River Delta have is thought to shift the coexistence of mixed evergreen and deciduous species. In this study, the seedlings of the dominant evergreen species Cyclobalanopsis glauca Thunb. and the deciduous species Liquidambar formosana Hance from the Yangtze River Delta were chosen to test their responses to simulated N additions using an ecophysiological approach. N was added to the tree canopy at rates of 0 (CK), 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 (N25), and 50 kg N ha-1 year-1 (N50). The leaf N content per mass (N m, by 44.03 and 49.46%) and total leaf chlorophyll content (Chl, by 72.15 and 63.63%) were enhanced for both species, and C. glauca but not L. formosana tended to allocate more N to Chl per leaf area (with a higher slope). The enhanced N availability and Chl promoted the apparent quantum yield (AQY) significantly by 15.38 and 43.90% for L. formosana and C. glauca, respectively. Hydraulically, the increase in sapwood density (ρ) for L. formosana was almost double that of C. glauca. Synchronous improved sapwood specific hydraulic conductivity (K S, by 37.5%) for C. glauca induced a significant reduction in stomatal conductance (g s) (p < 0.05) in the N50 treatments, which is in contrast to the weak varied g s accompanied by a 59.49% increase in K S for L. formosana. As a result, the elevated maximum photosynthesis (A max) of 12.19% for L. formosana in combination with the increase in the total leaf area (indicated by a 37.82% increase in the leaf area ratio-leaf area divided by total aboveground biomass) ultimately yielded a 34.34% enhancement of total biomass. In contrast, the A max and total biomass were weakly promoted for C. glauca. The reason for these distinct responses may be attributed to the lower water potential at 50% of conductivity lost (P 50) for C. glauca, which enables higher hydraulic safety at the cost of a weak increase in Amax due to the stomatal limitation in response to elevated N availability. Altogether, our results indicate that the deciduous L. formosana would be more susceptible to elevated N availability even if both species received similar N allocation.

Understanding and predicting frost-induced tropical tree mortality patterns

Extreme climatic and weather events are increasing in frequency and intensity across the world causing episodes of widespread tree mortality in many forested ecosystems. However, we have a limited understanding about which local factors influence tree mortality patterns, restricting our ability to predict tree mortality, especially within topographically complex tropical landscapes with a matrix of mature and secondary forests. We investigated the effects of two major local factors, topography and forest successional type, on climate-induced tropical tree mortality patterns using an observational and modeling approach. The northernmost Neotropical dry forest endured an unprecedented episode of frost-induced tree mortality after the historic February 2011 cold wave hit northwestern Mexico. In a moderately hilly landscape covering mature and secondary tropical dry forests, we surveyed 454 sites for the presence or absence of frost-induced tree mortality. In addition, across forty-eight 1 ha plots equally split into the two forest types, we examined 6,981 woody plants to estimate a frost-disturbance severity metric using the density of frost-killed trees. Elevation is the main factor modulating frost effects regardless of forest type. Higher occurrence probabilities of frost-induced tree mortality at lowland forests can be explained by the strong influence of elevation on temperature distribution since heavier cold air masses move downhill during advective frosts. Holding elevation constant, the probability of frost-induced tree mortality in mature forests was twice that of secondary forests but severity showed the opposite pattern, suggesting a cautious use of occurrence probabilities of tree mortality to infer severity of climate-driven disturbances. Extreme frost events, in addition to altering forest successional pathways and ecosystem services, likely maintain and could ultimately shift latitudinal and altitudinal range margins of Neotropical dry forests.

A trait-based approach to the conservation of threatened plant species

Traditionally the vulnerability of threatened species to extinction has been assessed by studying their environment, genetics and population dynamics. A more comprehensive understanding of the factors promoting or limiting the long-term persistence of threatened species could be achieved by conducting an analysis of their functional responses to changing environments, their ecological interactions, and their role in ecosystem functioning. These less traditional research areas can be unified in a trait-based approach, a recent methodological advance in ecology that is being used to link individual-level functions to species, community and ecosystem processes to provide mechanistic explanations of observed patterns, particularly in changing environments. We illustrate how trait-based information can be translated into well-defined conservation strategies, using the example of Dioon sonorense, an Endangered cycad endemic to north-western Mexico. Scientific information yielded by trait-based research, coupled with existing knowledge derived from well-established traditional approaches, could facilitate the development of more integrative conservation strategies to promote the long-term persistence of individual threatened species. A comprehensive database of functional traits of threatened species would be of value in assisting the implementation of the trait-based approach.

Drier tropical forests are susceptible to functional changes in response to a long-term drought

Climatic changes have profound effects on the distribution of biodiversity, but untangling the links between climatic change and ecosystem functioning is challenging, particularly in high diversity systems such as tropical forests. Tropical forests may also show different responses to a changing climate, with baseline climatic conditions potentially inducing differences in the strength and timing of responses to droughts. Trait-based approaches provide an opportunity to link functional composition, ecosystem function and environmental changes. We demonstrate the power of such approaches by presenting a novel analysis of long-term responses of different tropical forest to climatic changes along a rainfall gradient. We explore how key ecosystem's biogeochemical properties have shifted over time as a consequence of multi-decadal drying. Notably, we find that drier tropical forests have increased their deciduous species abundance and generally changed more functionally than forests growing in wetter conditions, suggesting an enhanced ability to adapt ecologically to a drying environment.

Resilience of seed production to a severe El Niño-induced drought across functional groups and dispersal types

More frequent and severe El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO) are causing episodic periods of decreased rainfall. Although the effects of these ENSO-induced droughts on tree growth and mortality have been well studied, the impacts on other demographic rates such as reproduction are less well known. We use a four-year seed rain dataset encompassing the most severe ENSO-induced drought in more than 30 years to assess the resilience (i.e., resistance and recovery) of the seed composition and abundance of three forest types in a tropical dry forest. We found that forest types showed distinct differences in the timing, duration, and intensity of drought during the ENSO event, which likely mediated seed composition shifts and resilience. Drought-deciduous species were particularly sensitive to the drought with overall poor resilience of seed production, whereby seed abundance of this functional group failed to recover to predrought levels even two years after the drought. Liana and wind-dispersed species were able to maintain seed production both during and after drought, suggesting that ENSO events promote early successional species or species with a colonization strategy. Combined, these results suggest that ENSO-induced drought mediates the establishment of functional groups and dispersal types suited for early successional conditions with more open canopies and reduced competition among plants. The effects of the ENSO-induced drought on seed composition and abundance were still evident two years after the event suggesting the recovery of seed production requires multiple years that may lead to shifts in forest composition and structure in the long term, with potential consequences for higher trophic levels like frugivores.

C:N:P stoichiometry of rhizosphere soils differed significantly among overstory trees and understory shrubs in plantations in subtropical China

Rhizosphere soil C:N:P stoichiometry is useful for identifying the linkage of plant species and soil nutrients, which can be particularly helpful for understory vegetation management of forest ecosystems. There has been limited research on rhizosphere soil stoichiometry, especially for co-existing overstory and understory plant species. We investigated the bulk and rhizosphere soil C:N:P stoichiometry of dominant overstory trees and understory shrubs (Adinandra millettii, Eurya muricata, and Loropetalum chinense) in Pinus massoniana Lamb., Pinus elliottii Engelm., and Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook. plantations in subtropical China. Rhizosphere soil C, N, and P concentrations and ratios increased significantly compared with bulk soil, and those of overstory trees were higher than those of understory shrubs with the exception of L. chinense. Rhizosphere soil C:N, C:P, and N:P of L. chinense were not significantly different with those of overstory trees but were higher than those of A. millettii and E. muricata. Soil pH significantly influenced the profiles produced by soil C, N, and P concentrations and their stoichiometries. This study indicated that the difference in nutrient status between overstory trees and understory shrubs was related to shrub species, in which soil pH was the dominant driving factor. Understory shrub species should be considered in plantation management to reduce resource competition among species.
