Abstract
Cuproptosis, a newly characterized form of regulated cell death driven by copper accumulation, has emerged as a significant mechanism underlying various non-cancerous diseases. This review delves into the complex interplay between copper metabolism and the pathogenesis of conditions such as Wilson's disease (WD), neurodegenerative disorders, and cardiovascular pathologies. We examine the molecular mechanisms by which copper dysregulation induces cuproptosis, highlighting the pivotal roles of key copper transporters and enzymes. Additionally, we evaluate the therapeutic potential of copper chelation strategies, which have shown promise in experimental models by mitigating copper-induced cellular damage and restoring physiological homeostasis. Through a comprehensive synthesis of recent advancements and current knowledge, this review underscores the necessity of further research to translate these findings into clinical applications. The ultimate goal is to harness the therapeutic potential of targeting cuproptosis, thereby improving disease management and patient outcomes in non-cancerous conditions associated with copper dysregulation.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmic complication in cancer patients and can be exacerbated by traditional cytotoxic and targeted anticancer therapies. Increased incidence of AF in cancer patients is independent of confounding factors, including preexisting myocardial arrhythmogenic substrates, type of cancer, or cancer stage. Mechanistically, AF is characterized by fast unsynchronized atrial contractions with rapid ventricular response, which impairs ventricular filling and results in various symptoms such as fatigue, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Due to increased blood stasis, a consequence of both cancer and AF, concern for stroke increases in this patient population. To compound matters, cardiotoxic anticancer therapies themselves promote AF; thereby exacerbating AF morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. In this review, we examine the relationship between AF, cancer, and cardiotoxic anticancer therapies with a focus on the shared molecular and electrophysiological mechanisms linking these disease processes. We also explore the potential role of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in the management of anticancer-therapy-induced AF.

Abstract
Metal ions such as iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and calcium are essential for normal cellular processes, including DNA synthesis, enzyme activity, cellular signaling, and oxidative stress regulation. When the balance of metal homeostasis is disrupted, it can lead to various pathological conditions, including cancer. Thus, understanding the role of metal homeostasis in cancer has led to the development of anti-tumor strategies that specifically target the metal imbalance. Up to now, diverse small molecule-based chelators, ionophores, metal complexes, and metal-based nanomaterials have been developed to restore the normal balance of metals or exploit the dysregulation for therapeutic purposes. They hold great promise in inhibiting tumor growth, preventing metastasis, and enhancing the effectiveness of existing cancer therapies. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive summary of the strategies employed to modulate the homeostasis of iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and calcium for cancer therapy. Their modulation mechanisms for metal homeostasis are succinctly described, and their recent applications in the field of cancer therapy are discussed. At the end, the limitations of these approaches are addressed, and potential avenues for future developments are explored.

Abstract
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients have late presentation at the time of diagnosis and a poor prognosis. Metal dyshomeostasis is known to play a role in cancer progression. However, the blood and tissue metallome of PDAC patients has not been assessed. This study aimed to determine the levels of essential and toxic metals in the serum and pancreatic tissue from PDAC patients. Serum samples were obtained from PDAC patients before surgical resection. Tissue (tumor and adjacent normal pancreas) were obtained from the surgically resected specimen. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis was performed to quantify the levels of 10 essential and 3 toxic metals in these samples. Statistical analysis was performed to identify dysregulated metals in PDAC and their role as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. Significantly decreased serum levels of magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, arsenic, and mercury and increased levels of molybdenum were shown to be associated with PDAC. There were significantly decreased levels of zinc, manganese and molybdenum, and increased levels of calcium and selenium in the pancreatic tumor tissue compared with the adjacent normal pancreas. Notably, lower serum levels of calcium, iron, and selenium, and higher levels of manganese, were significantly associated with a poor prognosis (i.e., overall survival) in PDAC patients. In conclusion, this is the first study to comprehensively assess the serum and tissue metallome of PDAC patients. It identified the association of metals with PDAC diagnosis and prognosis.

Abstract
This study aims to explore the relationship between serum iron by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and potential mechanism. Totally 113 patients from 233 patients with advanced metastatic lung cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer and colorectal cancer who treated with immunotherapy in Shandong Provincial Hospital were divided into training group (n=68) and validation group (n=45), whose patients were divided into clinical benefit response (CBR) and non-clinical benefit (NCB) by RECIST (v1.1) respectively. We found for the first time that high serum iron level (>1036 μg/L) was a novel biomarker of better PFS (10.13 months vs 7.37 months; p = 0.0015) and OS(16.00 months vs 11.00 months; p = 0.0235) by ROC curve (sensitivity: 78.13 %; Specificity: 80.56 %; p < 0.0001) of CBR (n=32) and NCB (n=36) patients in training group. Interestingly, consistently stable and high serum iron level predicted better efficacy during immunotherapy. Noteworthy, the predictive efficacy of PD-L1 expression was significantly inferior than serum iron (accuracy:63.49% vs 79.41%, p=0.0432), while serum iron detected by spectrophotometry did not predict the efficacy of immunotherapy (p=0.0671) indicating higher sensitivity of ICP-MS. Bioinformatics analysis showed that serum iron could enhance innate immunity and cytokine release and was verified by proteomics that KEGG and GO analysis enriched innate immune and cytokine signaling pathways. Flow cytometry showed that IL-17 (p=0.0002) increased and IL-6 (p=0.0112) decreased after immunotherapy. Based on this, Nomogram with better prediction was constructed by multiple clinical and independent factors. Our results revealed that serum iron is positively associated with ICIs efficacy by enhancing innate immunity and cytokine release in advanced metastatic cancers, and can be a biomarker for predicting ICIs response.

Abstract
Brown spot caused by Bipolaris oryzae is a major damaging fungal disease of rice which can decrease the yield and value of produce due to grain discoloration. The objectives of the current study were to investigate and understand the biochemical indices of brown spot disease resistance in rice. A total of 108 genotypes (mutant and hybrid) along with Super Basmati and parent RICF-160 were evaluated against brown spot disease. The genotypes exhibiting resistant and susceptible responses to brown spot disease according to the IRRI standard disease rating scale were screened and selected. To study the biochemical response mechanism, forty five selected genotypes along with Super Basmati and RICF-160 were analyzed using the biochemical markers. The physiological and biochemical analysis provided valuable insights and confirmed the resistance of rice hybrids and mutants against brown spot disease. Positive correlations were observed among stress bio-markers and disease response. Rice genotypes i.e. Mu-AS-8, Mu-AS-19, Mu-AS-20 and Mu-AS-35 exhibited moderate resistant response while Hy-AS-92, Hy-AS-98, Hy-AS-99, Hy-AS-101, Hy-AS-102 and Hy-AS-107 showed resistant response to brown spot disease. Brown spot resistant rice genotypes had lesser values of malondialdehyde and total oxidant status and higher antioxidant activities i.e. superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, total phenolic content and lycopene. The selected resistant rice genotypes had resistance capacity against Bipolaris oryzae stress. In conclusion, identified resistant mutants i.e. Mu-AS-8, Mu-AS-19, Mu-AS-20 and Mu-AS-35 and hybrids i.e. Hy-AS-92, Hy-AS-98, Hy-AS-99, Hy-AS-101, Hy-AS-102 and Hy-AS-107 could be used in rice breeding program to achieve sustainable rice production by coping the emerging challenge of brown spot disease under variable climate conditions.

Abstract
Most anticancer treatments act on oxidative-stress pathways by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill cancer cells, commonly resulting in consequential drug-induced systemic cytotoxicity. Physical activity (PA) has arisen as an integrative cancer therapy, having positive health effects, including in redox-homeostasis. Here, we investigated the impact of an online supervised PA program on promoter-specific DNA methylation, and corresponding gene expression/activity, in 3 antioxidants- (SOD1, SOD2, and CAT) and 3 breast cancer (BC)-related genes (BRCA1, L3MBTL1 and RASSF1A) in a population-based sample of women diagnosed with primary BC, undergoing medical treatment. We further examined mechanisms involved in methylating and demethylating pathways, predicted biological pathways and interactions of exercise-modulated molecules, and the functional relevance of modulated antioxidant markers on parameters related to aerobic capacity/endurance, physical fatigue and quality of life (QoL). PA maintained levels of SOD activity in blood plasma, and at the cellular level significantly increased SOD2 mRNA (≈+77 %), contrary to their depletion due to medical treatment. This change was inversely correlated with DNA methylation in SOD2 promoter (≈-20 %). Similarly, we found a significant effect of PA only on L3MBTL1 promoter methylation (≈-25 %), which was inversely correlated with its mRNA (≈+43 %). Finally, PA increased TET1 mRNA levels (≈+15 %) and decreased expression of DNMT3B mRNA (≈-28 %). Our results suggest that PA-modulated DNA methylation affects several signalling pathways/biological activities involved in the cellular oxidative stress response, chromatin organization/regulation, antioxidant activity and DNA/protein binding. These changes may positively impact clinical outcomes and improve the response to cancer treatment in post-surgery BC patients.

Abstract
There is emerging interest in the relationship between several serum micronutrients and the prognosis of patients with breast cancer. The relationship between serum zinc and copper levels and breast cancer prognosis is unclear. In our study, we included 583 patients with breast cancer diagnosed between 2008 and 2015 in the region of Szczecin, Poland. In a blood sample obtained before treatment, serum zinc and copper levels were quantified by mass spectroscopy. Each patient was assigned to one of four categories (quartiles) based on the distribution of the elements in the entire cohort. Patients were followed from diagnosis to death over a mean of 10.0 years. The 10-year overall survival was 58.3% for women in the highest and 82.1% for those in the lowest quartile of serum copper/zinc ratio (p < 0.001). The multivariate hazard ratio (HR) for breast cancer death was 2.07 (95% CI 1.17-3.63; p = 0.01) for patients in the highest quartile of serum copper/zinc ratio compared to those in the lowest. There is evidence that the serum zinc level and copper/zinc ratio provide an independent predictive value for overall survival and breast cancer-specific survival after breast cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
Environmental factors play a role in breast cancer development. While metals and metalloids (MMs) include some carcinogens, their association with breast cancer depends on the element studied. Most studies focus on individual MMs, but the combined effects of metal mixtures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the joint exposure to MMs and the risk of developing female breast cancer. We conducted a case-control study within the multicenter prospective EPIC-Spain cohort. Study population comprised 292 incident cases and 286 controls. Plasma concentrations of 16 MMs were quantified at recruitment. Potential confounders were collected using a questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were built to explore the effect of individual MMs. Quantile-based g computation models were applied to identify the main mixture components and to estimate the joint effect of the metal mixture. The geometric means were highest for Cu (845.6 ng/ml) and Zn (604.8 ng/ml). Cases had significantly higher Cu concentrations (p = 0.010) and significantly lower Zn concentrations (p < 0.001). Cu (+0.42) and Mn (+0.13) showed the highest positive weights, whereas Zn (-0.61) and W (-0.16) showed the highest negative weights. The joint effect of the metal mixture was estimated at an OR = 4.51 (95%CI = 2.32-8.79), suggesting a dose-response relationship. No evidence of non-linearity or non-additivity was found. An unfavorable exposure profile, primarily characterized by high Cu and low Zn levels, could lead to a significant increase in the risk of developing female breast cancer. Further studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Cuproptosis is a newly identified form of cell death driven by copper. Recently, the role of copper and copper triggered cell death in the pathogenesis of cancers have attracted attentions. Cuproptosis has garnered enormous interest in cancer research communities because of its great potential for cancer therapy. Copper-based treatment exerts an inhibiting role in tumor growth and may open the door for the treatment of chemotherapy-insensitive tumors. In this review, we provide a critical analysis on copper homeostasis and the role of copper dysregulation in the development and progression of cancers. Then the core molecular mechanisms of cuproptosis and its role in cancer is discussed, followed by summarizing the current understanding of copper-based agents (copper chelators, copper ionophores, and copper complexes-based dynamic therapy) for cancer treatment. Additionally, we summarize the emerging data on copper complexes-based agents and copper ionophores to subdue tumor chemotherapy resistance in different types of cancers. We also review the small-molecule compounds and nanoparticles (NPs) that may kill cancer cells by inducing cuproptosis, which will shed new light on the development of anticancer drugs through inducing cuproptosis in the future. Finally, the important concepts and pressing questions of cuproptosis in future research that should be focused on were discussed. This review article suggests that targeting cuproptosis could be a novel antitumor therapy and treatment strategy to overcome cancer drug resistance.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to explore the relationship between cuproptosis-related long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). RNA-seq data, including lncRNAs and related clinical information of HCC patients, were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. A signature composed 3 cuproptosis-related lncRNAs was constructed by LASSO analysis, and HCC patients were classified into high- and low-risk groups. Patients in the high-risk group had a poorer prognosis compared with the low-risk group. Univariate Cox and multivariate Cox regression analyses confirmed that the signature model was an independent risk factor compared to other clinical biomarkers. Furthermore, gene set enrichment analysis indicated that metabolism-related pathways were enriched in low-risk group, including drug metabolism, and fatty acid metabolism. Further research demonstrated that there were markedly differences in drug response between the high- and low-risk group. Immune related analysis showed that the most type of immune cells and immunological function in the high-risk group were different with the risk-group. Finally, TP53 mutation rate and the tumor mutational burden in the high-risk group were higher compared with the low-risk group. In conclusion, we constructed a prognostic signature based on the expression of cuproptosis-related lncRNAs to predict HCC patients' prognosis, drug response and immune microenvironment, and further research will be conducted to uncover the mechanisms.

Abstract
Transition metal elements, such as copper, play diverse and pivotal roles in oncology. They act as constituents of metalloenzymes involved in cellular metabolism, function as signaling molecules to regulate the proliferation and metastasis of tumors, and are integral components of metal-based anticancer drugs. Notably, recent research reveals that excessive copper can also modulate the occurrence of programmed cell death (PCD), known as cuprotosis, in cancer cells. This modulation occurs through the disruption of tumor cell metabolism and the induction of proteotoxic stress. This discovery uncovers a mode of interaction between transition metals and proteins, emphasizing the intricate link between copper homeostasis and tumor metabolism. Moreover, they provide innovative therapeutic strategies for the precise diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors. At the crossroads of chemistry and oncology, we undertake a comprehensive review of copper homeostasis in tumors, elucidating the molecular mechanisms underpinning cuproptosis. Additionally, we summarize current nanotherapeutic approaches that target cuproptosis and provide an overview of the available laboratory and clinical methods for monitoring this process. In the context of emerging concepts, challenges, and opportunities, we emphasize the significant potential of nanotechnology in the advancement of this field.

Abstract
Copper is an essential trace element in biological systems, maintaining the activity of enzymes and the function of transcription factors. However, at high concentrations, copper ions show increased toxicity by inducing regulated cell death, such as apoptosis, paraptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, and cuproptosis. Furthermore, copper ions can trigger macroautophagy/autophagy, a lysosome-dependent degradation pathway that plays a dual role in regulating the survival or death fate of cells under various stress conditions. Pathologically, impaired copper metabolism due to environmental or genetic causes is implicated in a variety of human diseases, such as rare Wilson disease and common cancers. Therapeutically, copper-based compounds are potential chemotherapeutic agents that can be used alone or in combination with other drugs or approaches to treat cancer. Here, we review the progress made in understanding copper metabolic processes and their impact on the regulation of cell death and autophagy. Abstract
Background The oxidative balance is a state of equilibrium between oxidants and antioxidants disrupted in various disorders, including BC. This study aimed to assess this equilibrium in breast cancer (BC) patients by looking at the oxidant-to-antioxidant ratio. Methods This case-control study comprised 40 women patients with breast cancer and 30 age-matched healthy individuals. The oxidation-reduction colorimetric technique was used to determine serum levels of total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The oxidant-to-antioxidant balance was estimated using the TOS- to- TAC ratio (TOS/TAC). Results The mean TOS in healthy individuals was 8.40±2.06 µmol/L, while in BC patients it was 13.31±2.16 µmol/L (P< 0.001). The mean serum level of TAC was 1.43±0.21 mmol/L in healthy individuals and 1.19±0.15 mmol/L in BC patients (P< 0.001). The mean serum TOS/TAC was 6.01±0.32 in the healthy individuals and 11.42±0.41 in the BC patients (P< 0.0001). There were direct correlations between TAC and estrogen receptor (r=0.339, P=0.038). The TOS/TAC level has a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 83.33%, distinguishing patients with BC from healthy controls (P< 0.001). A significant trend of increasing risk with rising TOS/TAC levels was also seen [OR=3.62, (95 % CI 1.79, 7.35)]. Conclusions In breast cancer, the serum TOS to TAC ratio can better diagnose oxidative equilibrium than either component alone.

Abstract
Breast carcinoma is a heterogeneous disease that affects millions of women worldwide. Wilms' tumor 1 (WT1) is an oncogene that promotes proliferation, metastasis and reduces apoptosis. MicroRNAs (miR) are short noncoding RNAs with a major role in cancer metastasis. In present study, we investigated the association of serum level of WT1 with oxidative stress and expression of miR-361-5p in breast cancer. Serum samples of 45 patients and of 45 healthy women analyzed for protein level of WT1, malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Serum and tissue expression of miR-361-5p in 45 tumor tissues and 45 paired non-tumor adjacent tissues and 45 serum samples of patients and healthy women analyzed by qRT-PCR. Protein levels of WT1 not significantly difference in serum of patients compared to healthy controls. Serum levels of MDA and TOS in patients were higher, but TAC level was lower than healthy controls (p < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between WT1 with MDA and TOS, and a negative correlation between WT1 with TAC in patients. miR-361-5p expression in tumor tissues and serum of patients was lower than non-tumor adjacent tissues and serum of healthy controls, respectively (p < 0.001). Moreover, there was a negative correlation between miR-361-5p and WT1 in patients. The positive correlation between WT1 with MDA and TOS and negative correlation between TAC and miR-361-5p suggests that this gene can play an important role in worse prognoses in breast cancer. Additionally, miR-361-5p may serve as an invasive biomarker for early detection of breast cancer.

Abstract
Testis cancer (TC) is the most common malignancy of young men. Current evidence from studies, alongside genetics and hormonal status, suggests a significant role of toxic metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), in the origin and development of TC. Besides oxidative stress and endocrine disruption, interaction with bioelements is one of the critical mechanisms of Cd and Pb toxicity and malign transformation. This study aimed to investigate metal levels in blood, healthy, and tumor testis tissue and to reveal hormone, oxidative status, and bioelements levels in patients with TC. The study enrolled 52 patients with TC and 61 healthy volunteers. Toxic metals and bioelements levels were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) while electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) and spectrophotometry methods were used for hormone and oxidative parameters evaluation. Significantly higher blood Cd levels were depicted in TC cohort. Furthermore, blood Cd elevation was associated with a 1.98 higher probability of TC developing. However, a metal concentration between healthy and tumor testis tissue did not differ significantly. Lower levels of estradiol and testosterone, established in a cohort of TC patients, followed the significant role of hormones in TC development. At the same time, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) has been recognized as a parameter with very good accuracy as a potential diagnostic marker for TC. The study revealed different distribution patterns of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the three compartments of the patients, as well significant correlation between essential metals Cu/Zn and toxic metals Cd/Pb indicating metal-metal interactions as pivotal mechanisms of metals toxicity.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer in women. Oxidative stress may contribute to cancer etiology through several mechanisms. A large body of evidence indicates that physical activity (PA) has positive effects on different aspects of BC evolution, including mitigation of negative effects induced by medical treatment. With the aim to verify the capacity of PA to counteract negative effects of BC treatment on systemic redox homeostasis in postsurgery female BC patients, we have examined the modulation of circulating levels of oxidative stress and inflammation markers. Moreover, we evaluated the impacts on physical fitness and mental well-being by measuring functional parameters, body mass index, body composition, health-related quality of life (QoL), and fatigue. Our investigation revealed that PA was effective in maintaining plasma levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and tGSH, as well as peripheral blood mononuclear cells' (PBMCs) mRNA levels of SOD1 and heat-shock protein 27. Moreover, we found a significant decrease in plasma interleukin-6 (≈0.57 ± 0.23-fold change, p < 0.05) and increases in both interleukin-10 (≈1.15 ± 0.35-fold change, p < 0.05) and PBMCs' mRNA level of SOD2 (≈1.87 ± 0.36-fold change, p < 0.05). Finally, PA improves functional parameters (6 min walking test, ≈+6.50%, p < 0.01; Borg, ≈-58.18%, p < 0.01; sit-and-reach, ≈+250.00%, p < 0.01; scratch right, ≈-24.12%, and left, ≈-18.81%, p < 0.01) and body composition (free fat mass, ≈+2.80%, p < 0.05; fat mass, ≈-6.93%, p < 0.05) as well as the QoL (physical function, ≈+5.78%, p < 0.05) and fatigue (cognitive fatigue, ≈-60%, p < 0.05) parameters. These results suggest that a specific PA program not only is effective in improving functional and anthropometric parameters but may also activate cellular responses through a multitude of actions in postsurgery BC patients undergoing adjuvant therapy. These may include modulation of gene expression and protein activity and impacting several signaling pathways/biological activities involved in tumor-cell growth; metastasis; and inflammation, as well as moderating distress symptoms known to negatively affect QoL.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study is aimed at evaluating the relationship between dietary and serum advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) with serum inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in breast cancer (BC). METHODS A sample of BC patients was followed for 12 months (March 2020-January 2022). Three-day food consumption record and serum samples were taken before surgery (T1), before chemotherapy (T2), at the 6th month of chemotherapy (T3), and at the 12th month of chemotherapy (T4). Dietary AGE intake was represented by carboxymethyl lysine (dCML). Serum levels of CML, inflammation, and oxidation biomarkers were determined with biochemical blood tests. The results were compared according to human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) status. RESULTS Thirty-two women with BC and 32 age and body mass index-matched healthy women participated. No significant correlation was found between dCML and serum CML, inflammatory or oxidative stress biomarkers at T1, T2, and T4. A weak positive correlation was demonstrated between dCML and serum malondialdehyde levels (rho=0.355, p=0.046) at T3. The serum CML, inflammation, and oxidation biomarker levels of the HER2- group were significantly higher than those of the HER2+ group at T1. CONCLUSION This study suggests that there is limited correlation between dCML and serum inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers in BC patients. Inflammation and oxidative biomarker levels appear to decline with treatment although dietary and serum AGE levels show not a corresponding significant decline. The HER2- subtype appears to be associated with higher dietary and serum AGEs and higher inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers.

Abstract
This study aims to visualize research hotspots and trends of "ferroptosis in cancer", "necroptosis in cancer", "pyroptosis in cancer", and "cuproptosis in cancer" through a bibliometric analysis to facilitate understanding of future developments in basic and clinical research and to provide a new perspective on cancer treatment. From January 1, 2012 to October 31, 2022, in the field of "ferroptosis in cancer", a total of 2467 organizations from 79 different countries published 3302 articles. 2274 organizations from 72 different countries published 2233 articles in the field of " necroptosis in cancer". 1366 institutions from 58 different countries contributed 1445 publications in the field of "pyroptosis in cancer". In the field of " cuproptosis in cancer", the number of articles published in the last 10 years is relatively low, with a total of 109 articles published by 116 institutions from four different countries. In the field of "ferroptosis in cancer", Tang Daolin had published 66 documents, ranked the first, while Dixon SJ is the most cited author, cited 3148 times; In the fields of "necroptosis in cancer", Vandenabeele peter had published 35 papers and Degterev had been cited 995 times, ranked the first, respectively; Kanneganti thirumala-devi had published 24 papers, is the highest number of publications in the fields of "pyroptosis in cancer", while Shi JJ was the most cited author with being cited 508 times. Both Huang Yan and Wang Tao published three papers and tied for first place and Tsvetkov p ranks first with being cited 107 times in "cuproptosis in cancer". "Cell", "Cell", "Nature", and "Science" was the most frequently co-cited journal on "ferroptosis in cancer", "necroptosis in cancer", "pyroptosis in cancer", and "cuproptosis in cancer", respectively. Further exploration of inhibitors of different Programmed cell death (PCD) and their targeted therapies are potential treatment options for cancer, but more direct clinical evidence as well as higher level clinical trials remain to be explored. Further clarification of the mechanisms of crosstalk between these PCDs may provide effective cancer treatments. And the role of different types of PCDs, especially the novel ones discovered, in cancer can be expected to remain a hot topic of research in the cancer field for quite some time to come.

Abstract
BackgroundCuproptosis is a newly discovered form of cell death induced by targeting lipoacylated proteins involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. However, the roles of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) in the clinical outcomes and immune landscape of colon cancer remain unknown.MethodsWe performed bioinformatics analysis of the expression data of 13 CRGs identified from a previous study and clinical information of patients with colon cancer obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus databases. Colon cancer cases were divided into two CRG clusters and prognosis-related differentially expressed genes. Patient data were separated into three corresponding distinct gene clusters, and the relationships between the risk score, patient prognosis, and immune landscape were analyzed. The identified molecular subtypes correlated with patient survival, immune cells, and immune functions. A prognostic signature based on five genes was identified, and the patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups based on the calculated risk score. A nomogram model for predicting patient survival was developed based on the risk score and other clinical features.ResultsThe high-risk group showed a worse prognosis, and the risk score was related to immune cell abundance, microsatellite instability, cancer stem cell index, checkpoint expression, immune escape, and response to chemotherapeutic drugs and immunotherapy. Findings related to the risk score were validated in the imvigor210 cohort of patients with metastatic urothelial cancer treated with anti-programmed cell death ligand 1.ConclusionWe demonstrated the potential of cuproptosis-based molecular subtypes and prognostic signatures for predicting patient survival and the tumor microenvironment in colon cancer. Our findings may improve the understanding of the role of cuproptosis in colon cancer and lead to the development of more effective treatment strategies.

Abstract
AIM To reveal the molecular mechanisms that targets mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling and the autophagic flux and to investigate the possible effects of the systemic administration of selenium (Se) on experimentally induced rat periapical lesions. METHODOLOGY Thirty adult Sprague-Dawley rats were divided equally into negative control, positive control and Se groups. In the positive control and Se groups, the pulp chambers of their mandibular first molars were exposed to the oral environment to induce periapical lesions The Se group received daily intraperitoneal injections of Se at a dose of 0.1 mg kg-1 . After 28 days, the amount of bone destruction; severity of inflammation; penetration of microorganisms along the root canal; collagen degradation in periodontal ligament; interleukin (IL)-6, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and caspase-3 expression; autophagic flux; and p38 MAPK signalling were evaluated using radiographic, histopathological, Gram staining, picrosirius red stain, immunohistochemical, quantitative real-time polymerase chain (qRT-PCR) and Western blot methods, respectively. These data were analysed through the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunnett's tests (p < .05). RESULTS The area of radiographic periapical bone loss, histopathological scores, the area of periapical bone loss and the scores for the bacteria localisation, the intensity of immunohistochemical staining for IL-6, HIF-1, COX-2 and caspase-3 in the Se group was significantly less than those of the positive control group (p < .01). The mRNA expression levels of Beclin-1, Atg3, Atg5, Atg7 and Atg16L1 were lower in the Se group than in the positive control group (p < .01). The protein expressions of Beclin-1, Atg5 and LC3-II, the phosphorylation ratio of the p38 MAPK and the ratios of LC3II/LC3I were significantly higher (p < .05) in the positive control and Se groups. On the contrary, the expression of the p62/SQSTM1 protein was significantly lower (p < .05) in the positive control and Se groups than in the negative control group. CONCLUSION The induction of periapical lesions in rats increased autophagic flux and activated p38 MAPK signal transduction processes. Se suppressed the inflammatory process, reduced bone destruction and both the autophagic flux and p38 MAPK activation.

Abstract
As an essential micronutrient, copper is required for a wide range of physiological processes in virtually all cell types. Because the accumulation of intracellular copper can induce oxidative stress and perturbing cellular function, copper homeostasis is tightly regulated. Recent studies identified a novel copper-dependent form of cell death called cuproptosis, which is distinct from all other known pathways underlying cell death. Cuproptosis occurs via copper binding to lipoylated enzymes in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, which leads to subsequent protein aggregation, proteotoxic stress, and ultimately cell death. Here, we summarize our current knowledge regarding copper metabolism, copper-related disease, the characteristics of cuproptosis, and the mechanisms that regulate cuproptosis. In addition, we discuss the implications of cuproptosis in the pathogenesis of various disease conditions, including Wilson's disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer, and we discuss the therapeutic potential of targeting cuproptosis.

Abstract
Recent studies have identified cuproptosis, a new mechanism of regulating cell death. Accumulating evidence suggests that copper homeostasis is associated with tumorigenesis and tumor progression, however, the clinical significance of cuproptosis in gastric cancer (GC) is unclear. In this study, we obtained 26 prognostic cuproptosis-related lncRNAs (CRLs) based on 19 cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) via Pearson correlation analysis, differential expression analysis, and univariate Cox analysis. A risk model based on 10 CRLs was established with the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analysis and multivariate Cox proportional hazards model to predict the prognosis and immune landscape of GC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The risk model has excellent accuracy and efficiency in predicting prognosis of GC patients (Area Under Curve (AUC) = 0.742, 0.803, 0.806 at 1,3,5 years, respectively, P < 0.05). In addition, we found that the risk score was negatively correlated with the infiltration of natural killer (NK) cells and helper T cells, while positively correlated with the infiltration of monocytes, macrophages, mast cells, and neutrophils. Moreover, we evaluated the difference in drug sensitivity of patients with different risk patterns. Furthermore, low-risk patients showed higher tumor mutation burden (TMB) and better immunotherapy response than high-risk patients. In the end, we confirmed the oncogenic role of AL121748.1 which exhibited the highest Hazard Ratio (HR) value among 10 CRLs in GC via cellular functional experiments. In conclusion, our risk model shows a significant role in tumor immunity and could be applied to predict the prognosis of GC patients.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease, and among the many factors which are involved in the onset, progression, and invasion of the disease, oxidative stress plays a significant role. The concentration and activity of enzymatic antioxidants are proportional to the concentration of trace elements, and the concentration of trace elements is often deficient in malignancies. Therefore, in the present study, we studied the tissue levels of oxidative stress, antioxidant status, zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) in breast cancer patients. Tissue samples were collected from 40 patients with breast cancer and 40 tumor margin tissue as a control group. All subjects gave their informed consent. The tissue samples were measured for superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), total antioxidants capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), malondialdehyde (MDA), Zn, and Cu. Data of all biochemical parameters of two groups were statistically analyzed by SPSS software, t test, and GraphPad Prism. Concentrations of MDA, TOS, and OSI in tumor tissue were significantly higher than tumor margin tissue, but the level of TAC and CAT, SOD, and GPX activities was significantly reduced in tumor tissue (p<0.05). It was found that the concentrations of Zn and Cu in breast cancer patients were higher than tumor margin tissue. Patients with breast cancer have a rise in oxidative stress indicators and a decrease in antioxidant stress markers. Since oxidative stress is a significant contributor to the development and progression of breast cancer, more research might lead to a more effective method of breast cancer treatment. Considering the dual role of oxidative stress in cancer, which can both cause survival and adaptation, and the death of cancer cells, and with more information, it can be used to manage the treatment and destruction of cancer cells.

Abstract
This investigation aimed to evaluate the defensive impacts of citral on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury induced by testicular torsion/detorsion (T/D) in rats in an experimental model. The grouping of subjects was as follows: (1) sham, (2) T/D, (3) and (4) T/D plus citral 150 and 300 mg/kg, respectively, and (5) intact (citral 300 mg/kg). T/D was performed by testicular 720° turning for 2 h and then detorsion for 24 h. Blood serum was obtained to assess testosterone and oxidative stress markers, epididymal sperms were collected for sperm staining and sperm analysis, and testicular tissues were examined for histopathology. T/D damage was associated with a remarkable decline in sperm total count, viability, and some velocity parameters in comparison to the sham group (p < 0.05), which could be reversed significantly by citral (p < 0.05). Histopathologically, T/D damage caused severe oedema, haemorrhage, inflammation, and seminiferous tubules disruption, while citral improved significantly the mean seminiferous tubular diameter, Cosentino's score, and Johnsen's score (p < 0.05). I/R injury was associated with significant increased malondialdehyde and oxidative stress index, and also significant reduced total antioxidant capacity and testosterone versus the sham group (p < 0.05), which all were prevented significantly by citral administration (p < 0.05). The outcomes greatly proved that testicular I/R injury could be significantly prevented by citral.

Abstract
Amaç: Meme kanseri, kadınlarda kanser kaynaklı ölümlerde akciğer kanserinden sonra ikinci sırada yer alır. Çeşitli çalışmalarda, selenoproteinlerin kanserogenezin bazı evrelerini baskıladığı ve kanser hücrelerinin çoğalma hızını azalttığı gösterilmiştir. Ancak bu mekanizmalar tam olarak açıklanamamıştır. Kanser tedavisinde radyoterapi, kemoterapiyle birlikte en çok tercih edilen tedavi yöntemlerindendir. Çalışmanın amacı, radyoterapi alan meme kanserli hastaların tedavi öncesi ve sonrası selenoprotein düzeylerindeki değişiklikleri değerlendirerek hastalığın etiyopatogenezine olası etkilerini incelemektir.Yöntem: Çalışmamıza meme kanseri teşhisi konmuş, radyoterapi öncesi ve radyoterapi sonrası örnekleri alınan 35 kadın hasta ile herhangi bir ilaç tedavisi almayan 25 sağlıklı kadın gönüllü dahil edildi. Hasta ve sağlıklı kontrol gruplarını oluşturan bireylerden kan örnekleri alındı. Serum örneklerinde selenoprotein K (Sel-K), selenoprotein W1 (Sel-W1) ve selenoprotein P (Sel-P) düzeyleri ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) yöntemi ile ölçüldü. İstatistiksel analiz, Wilcoxon ve Mann-Whitney U testleri kullanılarak yapıldı. Hesaplamalar için Statistical Package for the Social Sciences – SPSS 21.0 for Windows (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, ABD) kullanıldı. p<0.05, istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir farkı belirtmek için kabul edildi.Bulgular: Serum Sel-K düzeyleri tedavi öncesi ve kontrol grubu karşılaştırıldığında, tedavi öncesi grupta anlamlı olarak düşük bulundu. Sel- P düzeyleri hem tedavi öncesi hem de tedavi sonrasında kontrol grubu ile karşılaştırıldığında her iki grupta da kontrol grubuna göre düşük bulundu. Sel-W1 düzeylerinde gruplar arasında herhangi bir anlamlılık bulunmadı.Sonuç: Meme kanserinde bazı selenoproteinlerin hastalığın etiyopatogenezinde önemli bir rolü olmakla birlikte daha fazla örneklem grubu ve ileri çalışmalar ile hastalığın progresyonu ve selenoprotein düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin araştırılmasına ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır.

Abstract
Introduction Heavy metals were classified as essential, probably essential, and potentially toxic in the general population. Until now, it has been reported inconsistently on the association between heavy metals and BC. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the association between heavy metals and BC and review the potential mechanisms systematically. Methods We searched for epidemiological studies in English about the association between heavy metals and BC published before September 2020 in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases. In total 36 studies, comprising 4,151 individuals from five continents around the world were identified and included. Results In all biological specimens, Cu, Cd, and Pb concentrations were higher, but Zn and Mn concentrations were lower in patients with BC than in non-BC participants [SMD (95% CIs): 0.62 (0.12, 1.12); 1.64 (0.76, 2.52); 2.03 (0.11, 3.95); −1.40 (−1.96, −0.85); −2.26 (−3.39, −1.13); p = 0.01, 0.0003, 0.04, <0.0001, <0.0001]. Specifically, higher plasma or serum Cu and Cd, as well as lower Zn and Mn, were found in cases [SMD (95% CIs): 0.98 (0.36, 1.60); 2.55 (1.16, 3.94); −1.53 (−2.28, −0.78); −2.40 (−3.69, −1.10); p = 0.002, 0.0003, <0.0001, 0.0003]; in hair, only lower Zn was observed [SMD (95% CIs): −2.12 (−3.55, −0.68); p = 0.0004]. Furthermore, the status of trace elements probably needs to be re-explored, particularly in BC. More prospective studies, randomized clinical trials, and specific pathogenic studies are needed to prevent BC. The main mechanisms underlying above-mentioned findings are comprehensively reviewed. Conclusion For BC, this review identified the current knowledge gaps which we currently have in understanding the impact of different heavy metals on BC. Abstract
Copper is an essential nutrient whose redox properties make it both beneficial and toxic to the cell. Recent progress in studying transition metal signalling has forged new links between researchers of different disciplines that can help translate basic research in the chemistry and biology of copper into clinical therapies and diagnostics to exploit copper-dependent disease vulnerabilities. This concept is particularly relevant in cancer, as tumour growth and metastasis have a heightened requirement for this metal nutrient. Indeed, the traditional view of copper as solely an active site metabolic cofactor has been challenged by emerging evidence that copper is also a dynamic signalling metal and metalloallosteric regulator, such as for copper-dependent phosphodiesterase 3B (PDE3B) in lipolysis, mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1 (MEK1) and MEK2 in cell growth and proliferation and the kinases ULK1 and ULK2 in autophagy. In this Perspective, we summarize our current understanding of the connection between copper and cancer and explore how challenges in the field could be addressed by using the framework of cuproplasia, which is defined as regulated copper-dependent cell proliferation and is a representative example of a broad range of metalloplasias. Cuproplasia is linked to a diverse array of cellular processes, including mitochondrial respiration, antioxidant defence, redox signalling, kinase signalling, autophagy and protein quality control. Identifying and characterizing new modes of copper-dependent signalling offers translational opportunities that leverage disease vulnerabilities to this metal nutrient.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the tissue content of essential and toxic metals including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), silver (Ag), aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in the breast cancerous tissues compared to the non-cancerous tissue. The biopsy specimens of 63 breast cancers along with 63 adjacent healthy tissues in Kurdistan Province, Iran, were collected from 2019 to 2020 and assayed using ICP-MS (Agilent 7900). The results of the Mann-Whitney test illustrated that the concentration of Pb, Cd, As, Cr, Cu, and Se were significantly elevated in cancerous tissue (p < 0.05), while Zn was the only trace element with higher levels in healthy subjects (p < 0.05). Moreover, weak to moderate correlations between elements were observed in the cancerous group including Al-Cr (r=0.60), As-Cu (r=0.52), and Cu-Se (r=0.56). In contrast, no correlation over 0.50 was found between trace elements in the non-cancerous group. Raw risk differences (RDs) accounted for a significant effect for Pb, Cd, As, Ag, Cr, Se, and Zn on the development of breast cancer. In conclusion, elevated levels of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Se may contribute to enhancing the risk of breast cancer.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a common malignant tumor in women, and the anti-cancer effect of selenium (Se) is recognized. This meta-analysis was designed to determine the relationship between selenium levels in human tissue and breast cancer risk. Literatures published before August 2020 were systematically screened through PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Elsevier. The related publication quality was evaluated by the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. We used random effect models for calculation and conducted sensitivity analysis and evaluation of publication bias. We identified 18 case-control studies, including 3374 women diagnosed with breast cancer and 3582 healthy controls. The results showed that the difference between the case group and the control group was - 0.53 μg/l [95%CI - 0.72 to - 0.34] (P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed a serum difference of - 1.14 μg/l [95%CI - 1.70 to - 0.58] (P < 0.001). The value of plasma was - 0.21 μg/l [95% CI - 0.37 to - 0.04] (P = 0.014). The value of toenail was - 0.21 μg/l [95% CI - 0.38 to - 0.03] (P = 0.021). In contrast, selenium levels in hair were not significantly associated with breast cancer risk. In the case-control studies, it was observed that selenium level in human tissues was negatively correlated with the risk of breast cancer, which may improve the understanding of the effects of selenium on human health.

Abstract
Reduced serum magnesium concentrations in women with breast cancer compromises one of the antioxidant defense system involved in the carcinogenesis process. To evaluate parameters of magnesium, the enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase, and its relation with oxidative stress markers in women with breast cancer. A case-control study was conducted, involving 60 women in the age range between 29 and 65 years, divided into two groups: women with breast cancer (n = 30) and women without breast cancer (n = 30). Plasma; ionized, erythrocytic, and urinary magnesium intake; plasma concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances; and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase enzyme activity were evaluated. The mean value of the amount of dietary magnesium was below the recommended level in both groups studied, with no statistical difference (p > 0.05). Plasma, ionized, and erythrocyte magnesium concentrations of women with breast cancer were reduced in relation to the control group (p < 0.0001) and inadequate according to the reference values. Urinary excretion was high, with a significant difference between groups (p < 0.0001). The mean concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances was high in the study participants, with no significant statistical difference between the groups (p > 0.05). The mean values of superoxide dismutase enzyme activity were adequate, with no statistically significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). Women with breast cancer have impaired magnesium homeostasis, characterized by its reduction in diet, plasma, and erythrocytes and its increase in urine.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) plays a pivotal role in cancer progression by acting as a co-factor that regulates the activity of many enzymes and structural proteins in cancer cells. Therefore, Cu-based complexes have been investigated as novel anticancer metallodrugs and are considered as a complementary strategy for currently used platinum agents with undesirable general toxicity. Due to the high failure rate and increased cost of new drugs, there is a global drive towards the repositioning of known drugs for cancer treatment in recent years. Disulfiram (DSF) is a first-line antialcoholism drug used in clinics for more than 65 yr. In combination with Cu, it has shown great potential as an anticancer drug by targeting a wide range of cancers. The reaction between DSF and Cu ions forms a copper diethyldithiocarbamate complex (Cu(DDC)2 also known as CuET) which is the active, potent anticancer ingredient through inhibition of NF-κB and ubiquitin-proteasome system as well as alteration of the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Importantly, DSF/Cu inhibits several molecular targets related to drug resistance, stemness, angiogenesis and metastasis and is thus considered as a novel strategy for overcoming tumour recurrence and relapse in patients. Despite its excellent anticancer efficacy, DSF has proven unsuccessful in several cancer clinical trials. This is likely due to the poor stability, rapid metabolism and/or short plasma half-life of the currently used oral version of DSF and the inability to form Cu(DDC)2 at relevant concentrations in tumour tissues. Here, we summarize the scientific rationale, molecular targets, and mechanisms of action of DSF/Cu in cancer cells and the outcomes of oral DSF ± Cu in cancer clinical trials. We will focus on the novel insights on harnessing the immune system and hypoxic microenvironment using DSF/Cu complex and discuss the emerging delivery strategies that can overcome the shortcomings of DSF-based anticancer therapies and provide opportunities for translation of DSF/Cu or its Cu(DDC)2 complex into cancer therapeutics.

Abstract
Many free radicles are implicated to activate a number of oncogenic signaling, cause damage to deoxyribonucleic acid and tumor suppressor genes, or promote expression of proto-oncogenes. Reduced level of antioxidants and increases oxidative stress markers are associated with the development of various types of cancer.This prospective study included 60 women who were grouped into equal groups. Patients group included 30 breast cancer women and control group consisting of 30 apparently healthy women. Both groups were compared regarding the serum levels of antioxidants biomarkers (vitamin C, ceruloplasmin, glutathione) and oxidative stress biomarkers, malondialdehyde (MDA), peroxynitrite, and gamma-glutamyl transferase.In regard to the antioxidant biomarkers, there was a significant difference between the patients and the controls regarding the levels of serum ceruloplasmin and glutathione, (P values .000) for each while vitamin C showed no significant correlation (P value .053), while regarding oxidative stress biomarkers, the correlation was significant for both peroxynitrite and MDA (P value .000 and .001) respectively, and not significant for gamma-glutamyl transferase (P value 1.00).Reduced level both ceruloplasmin and glutathione is seen in patients with breast cancer while vitamin C is not associated. Elevated levels of both peroxynitrite and MDA is seen in patients with breast cancer which may be used as serum markers for the early detection of breast cancer.

Abstract
Acrylamide (AA) is an organic chemical widely existing in the public diet, especially in foods with high-temperature fried and baked starchy and may have various adverse health effects on organisms. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether quercetin plays a protective role in AA-induced element variation in rats. Rats were randomly divided into the control group, AA-treated group [5 mg/kg body weight (bw)], two dosages of quercetin-treated groups (10 and 50 mg/kg·bw, respectively), and two dosages of quercetin plus AA-treated groups. After a 16-week treatment, the serum samples of rats were collected. Serum elements were analyzed by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) combined with multivariate statistical analysis, and antioxidant indices, lipid peroxidation indicator, as well as inflammatory biomarkers, were also detected. The accuracy and precision of the method were verified, and all the validated data are within the satisfactory range. The results showed that the levels of vanadium (V), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), cobalt (Co), and magnesium (Mg) in serum were significantly lower (p < 0.01), while serum calcium (Ca) level was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in AA-treated group compared with the control group. When high-dose quercetin was administered to rats combined with AA, a significant recovered effect for the above elements levels was observed compared with the AA-treated group. This study suggests that quercetin (50 mg/kg·bw) exerts a regulatory and protective role in AA-induced variation of serum elements via reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting inflammation.

Abstract
Several changes of magnesium (Mg) metabolism have been reported with aging, including diminished Mg intake, impaired intestinal Mg absorption and renal Mg wasting. Mild Mg deficits are generally asymptomatic and clinical signs are usually non-specific or absent. Asthenia, sleep disorders, hyperemotionality, and cognitive disorders are common in the elderly with mild Mg deficit, and may be often confused with age-related symptoms. Chronic Mg deficits increase the production of free radicals which have been implicated in the development of several chronic age-related disorders. Numerous human diseases have been associated with Mg deficits, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and stroke, cardio-metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus, airways constrictive syndromes and asthma, depression, stress-related conditions and psychiatric disorders, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementia syndromes, muscular diseases (muscle pain, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia), bone fragility, and cancer. Dietary Mg and/or Mg consumed in drinking water (generally more bioavailable than Mg contained in food) or in alternative Mg supplements should be taken into consideration in the correction of Mg deficits. Maintaining an optimal Mg balance all through life may help in the prevention of oxidative stress and chronic conditions associated with aging. This needs to be demonstrated by future studies.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common neoplasm, comprising 16% of all women's cancers worldwide. Research of Copper (Cu) concentrations in various body specimens have suggested an association between Cu levels and breast cancer risks. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarize the results of published studies and examine this association. We searched the databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar and the reference lists of relevant publications. The Standardized Mean Differences (SMDs) between Cu levels in cancer cases and controls and corresponding Confidence Intervals (CIs), as well as I2 statistics, were calculated to examine heterogeneity. Following the specimens used in the original studies, the Cu concentrations were examined in three subgroups: serum or plasma, breast tissue, and scalp hair. We identified 1711 relevant studies published from 1984 to 2017. There was no statistically significant difference between breast cancer cases and controls for Cu levels assayed in any studied specimen; the SMD (95% CI) was -0.01 (-1.06 - 1.03; P = 0.98) for blood or serum, 0.51 (-0.70 - 1.73; P = 0.41) for breast tissue, and -0.88 (-3.42 - 1.65; P = 0.50) for hair samples. However, the heterogeneity between studies was very high (P < 0.001) in all subgroups. We did not find evidence for publication bias (P = 0.91). The results of this meta-analysis do not support an association between Cu levels and breast cancer. However, due to high heterogeneity in the results of original studies, this conclusion needs to be confirmed by well-designed prospective studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND More and more studies have investigated the relationship between serum copper (Cu) and/or zinc (Zn) levels and breast cancer (BC). However, the results are inconsistent. It is unclear whether the serum Cu to Zn ratio (Cu/Zn) is associated with BC risk. Therefore, we evaluated serum Cu and Zn concentrations, and Cu/Zn in BC through meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Studies reporting serum Cu and/or Zn concentrations in BC patients and controls from 1991 to 2020 were identified from PubMed, CNKI, and Wanfang databases online. Based on a random effects model, summary standard mean differences (SMDs) and the corresponding 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) were applied to compare the serum levels of Cu, Zn and Cu/Zn between BC patients and controls. RESULTS Thirty-six eligible studies involving 5747 female subjects were included. The present study illustrated that the BC patients had significantly higher serum Cu levels than healthy controls (HC) (SMD (95 % CI): 1.99(1.48, 2.49)) and patients with benign breast diseases (BD) (SMD (95 % CI): 0.99(0.38, 1.61)). However, Zn concentrations were statistically decreased in BC patients than HC (SMD (95 % CI): -1.20(-1.74, -0.66)) and BD (SMD (95 % CI): -1.13 (-1.73, -0.54)). Cu/Zn concentrations were remarkably increased in BC patients than HC (SMD (95 % CI): 2.75(1.79, 3.60)) and BD (SMD (95 % CI): 2.98(1.91, 4.05)) in some studies. CONCLUSION The results show that elevated serum levels of Cu and Cu/Zn, as well as decreased Zn might be associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These three parameters have the potential to distinguish breast cancer from benign breast diseases.

Abstract
The burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing worldwide especially in developing countries. This phenomenon may be attributable to lifestyle, dietary and environmental risk factors. We aimed to determine the level of 25 trace elements, their interaction with environmental risk factors, and subsequently develop a risk prediction model for CRC (RPM CRC). For the discovery phase, we used a hospital-based case-control study (CRC and non-CRC patients) and in the validation phase we analysed pre-symptomatic samples of CRC patients from The Malaysian Cohort Biobank. Information on the environmental risk factors were obtained and level of 25 trace elements measured using the ICP-MS method. CRC patients had lower Zn and Se levels but higher Li, Be, Al, Co, Cu, As, Cd, Rb, Ba, Hg, Tl, and Pb levels compared to non-CRC patients. The positive interaction between red meat intake ≥ 50 g/day and Co ≥ 4.77 µg/L (AP 0.97; 95% CI 0.91, 1.03) doubled the risk of CRC. A panel of 24 trace elements can predict simultaneously and accurate of high, moderate, and low risk of CRC (accuracy 100%, AUC 1.00). This study provides a new input on possible roles for various trace elements in CRC as well as using a panel of trace elements as a screening approach to CRC.

Abstract
Background We investigated levels of the metal elements Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Cu in blood, normal skin (NS), and different types of scar tissue and aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis of hypertrophic scars (HS). Material/Methods Tissue specimens were excised from 3 groups of research participants: scar-free, flat scar (FS), and HS groups. Levels of the study elements were measured in blood, NS, and scar tissues with a spectrophotometer. The levels in plasma or in different types of specimens were compared among subgroups. In the FS and HS groups, levels were compared between the scar tissue and NS of each individual. In addition, element differences in exposed and unexposed areas of NS were investigated in the scar-free group. HS fibroblasts (HFB) were cultured in medium with various reduced levels of metal elements to determine the influence of metal elements on fibroblast growth. Results Levels of trace elements, including Zn, Fe, and Cu, were significantly lower in HS than in FS. The levels of Ca, Zn, Fe, and Cu were markedly lower in HS than in the patients’ own NS, while the Cu/Zn ratio was higher. However, no such difference was observed in the FS group. No significant difference in element levels was found in either plasma or NS among the 3 groups. Reduced levels of the elements promoted HFB proliferation within 24 h while an inhibition effect was observed at 72 h. Conclusions Our findings indicate reduced levels of metal elements in part of the healing microenvironment, suggesting that decreased metal levels may be involved in the pathogenesis of HS.

Abstract
Cornelian Cherry (Cornus Mas L) has widespread use due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic and anti-oxidant properties. In this study, the effects of Cornus Mas L (C. mas L) in different dosages on the biochemical values of mice organs were investigated in the Ehrlich Ascites tumor model, which originated from mice breast adenocarcinoma and developed in Balb/C mice. In our study, 32 Balb/C type male mice were used. Ehrlich Ascites Tumor (EAT) cells (1x106 EAT cell) from the stock animal were injected into all the mice in an intraperitoneal way. Experimental groups were given 100 and 200mg/kg C. mas L extract intraperitoneally for 9 days. The weights of the animals were recorded every day and were sacrificed on the 9th day. To estimate tumor proliferation of the lung, brain, kidney, liver, and testis, antioxidant parameters were recorded including, the reduced glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation, glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Treatments of different doses of C. mas L. meaningfully (p < 0.05) modulated the lung, brain, kidney, liver and testis tissues antioxidant parameters as compared to the control. Our study showed the anti-tumor effect of C. mas L. in assisted tumor development with EAT cells, conceivably moderated by the enhancement of oxidative stress due to numerous mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of mortality all around the world. The increased production of reactive oxygen species occurs with cell damage, and cysteine is an important factor in preventing oxidative damage by its functional thiol group. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) and the risk factors, disease severity, and physical condition of patients with lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a prospective, controlled, nonblinded study, which included healthy volunteers and patients diagnosed with lung cancer who had not yet started any treatment. RESULTS There were 45 male (90%) and five female (5%) patients (mean age 64±9 years), and 41 male (82%) and nine female (18%) healthy volunteers (mean age 65±17 years) were included in this research. Overall, the thiol levels were lower in patients than the control group (p<0.001). The native thiol level means were 275±72 μmol/l in the patient group and 414±80 μmol/l in the control group, and the total thiol level means were 309±74 and 451±79 μmol/l, respectively. However, the disulfide parameter was not statistically significantly different between the two groups. There were no correlations between the tumor size and overall survival and the total thiol, native thiol, and disulfide levels. CONCLUSION This study showed that there is a significant relationship between lung cancer and TDH, but there were no correlations with the disease stage and the clinical performance status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The balance of the oxidative state in the body is fundamental for the maintenance of homeostasis. It has been implicated in the onset and progression of several diseases including breast cancer. The way in which the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) / antioxidants balance leads to or responds to disease is still controversial. In this study, TAC is used as a reference for the total antioxidant power of the body and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) for its vital importance in cellular antioxidant action and being the only lipid soluble antioxidant synthesized endogenously. Copper and zinc were measured as trace elements reflecting the antioxidant micronutrient profile of the body. METHODS After approval of the ethical committee, 60 recently diagnosed non-intervened breast cancer patients were recruited from the Medical Research Institute hospital, Alexandria University along with 20 apparently healthy volunteers as control group. Full patient history was taken including breastfeeding history, parity, hormone replacement therapy use, body mass index, pathological examination, metastatic work up results, past medical history and drug use. CA 15-3 and laboratory investigations evaluating blood glucose, kidney and liver functions were performed. Q10 levels were measured by HPLC using a kit from Recipe®. TAC was assayed spectrophotometrically (Biodiagnostics®). Copper and Zinc levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. RESULTS There was a statistically significant increase in the CoQ10, TAC and copper levels in the breast cancer group when compared to the control group. Zinc showed no statistically significant difference between the studied groups. CONCLUSION Inspite of the fact that a high antioxidant level is usually considered as a favourable state, TAC, CoQ10 and copper levels showed significantly higher levels in the breast cancer group when compared to the control group. It is worth mentioning that the cancer group were all recently diagnosed, non-intervened and showed no signs of metastasis. It is still unclear whether the increased antioxidant levels offer a selective growth advantage to tumor cells over their surrounding normal cells or serve as a protective measure by the body in an attempt to correct the assault triggered by the ROS.

Abstract
Background Spinal cord injury (SCI) has a high incidence and causes serious harm. Lipoxin A4 (LXA4) receptor agonist BML-111 was reported to regulate inflammation and oxidative stress. The goal of this study was to assess whether BML-111 could protect against SCI by suppressing inflammation and oxidative stress. Material/Methods We developed a rat SCI model, then BML-111 was intraperitoneally injected into SCI rats to observe the BML-111 function. The pathological changes of SCI were observed with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. Motor function of rats were assessed by the modified Tarlov’s scale. ELISA was used to assess the changes in levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. Western blot analysis was performed to assess the expressions of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, Bcl2, Bax, and cleaved caspase3 in spinal cord tissue. TOS and TAS in rat serum were detected by xylenol orange method and ABTS method, respectively. The apoptotic cells in spinal cord tissue were observed with TUNEL assay. Results The results indicated that BML-111 effectively improved the SCI and motor function of rats. BML-111 treatment decreased the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in serum and spinal cord tissue, as well as decreasing the levels of TOS and TAS and cell apoptosis. Conclusions BML-111 alleviated inflammation and oxidative stress in SCI rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some studies have investigated the effects of iron on breast carcinogenesis and reported different findings about the association between Fe and breast cancer risk. This study was conducted to estimate this effect using meta-analysis method. METHODS A total of 20 articles published between 1984 and 2017 worldwide were selected through searching PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. Keywords such Breast Cancer, Neoplasm, Trace elements, Iron, Breast tissue concentration, Plasma concentration, Scalp hair concentration, toenail concentration and their combination were used in the search. RESULTS The total number of participants was 4,110 individuals comprising 1,624 patients with breast cancer and 2,486 healthy subjects. Fe concentration was measured in the various subgroups in both case and control groups. There were significant correlations between Fe concentration and breast cancer in breast tissue subgroup (SMD: 0.67 [95% CI: 0.17 to 1.17; P=0.009]). Whereas, there was no meaningful difference in Fe status between women with and without breast cancer related to scalp hair and plasma subgroups; (SMD: -3.74 [95% CI: -7.58 to 0.10; P=0.056] and (SMD:-1.14[95% CI: -2.30 to 0.03; P=0.055], respectively. CONCLUSION The present meta-analysis indicated a positive and straight association between iron concentrations and risk of breast cancer but because of high heterogeneity we recommend more accurate future studies.

Abstract
Purpose: Breast cancer (BC) is globally the main reason of cancer-related deaths in women. Omentin-1, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant adipokine, plays different roles in tumorigenesis and anti-oncogenic pathways. In present study, we investigated the association of omentin-1 with oxidative stress and clinical significances in healthy controls and BC patients to assess the prognostic and diagnostic value of omentin-1 in this cancer.
Methods: This case-control study included 88 BC patients and 86 healthy controls. The serum levels of omentin-1 were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays methods. Also, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) serum levels were measured by spectrophotometer. quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied to the measurement of gene expression of omentin-1.
Results: the serum levels of omentin-1 were significantly lower in the BC patients compared to the healthy controls (P<0.001). Moreover, gene expression of omentin-1was significantly downregulated in the BC tissues compared to the adjacent normal tissues (P<0.001). Gene expression of omentin-1and its serum levels were significantly higher in grade I compared with grade II and III (P=0.001, P<0.001, respectively). Additionally, the serum levels of omentin-1 in the p53-positive BC patients were significantly higher than the p53-negative BC patients (P=0.001). There was an inverse correlation between the serum levels of MDA and TOS with the serum levels of omentin-1 (r=-0.436, r=-461, respectively).
Conclusion: We conclude that omentin-1 may have a good prognostic and diagnostic roles in the BC patients and decreases oxidative stress in these patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring neoplasm in females, comprising 16% of all female cancers worldwide. Various studies indicate some discrepancies regarding zinc (Zn) levels in various samples of breast cancer patients. OBJECTIVE The present study evaluated by meta-analysed the published data for Zn levels analyzed in breast tissue, plasma, serum, and hair samples and its relationship with breast cancer. METHODS The present meta-analysis included 36 studies, all of which were published in the years between 1984 to 2017 and selected by searching the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and the ISI Web of Knowledge. The articles were analyzed, and I² statistics were used to examine heterogeneity. The objective analysis was performed on data from the 36 studies, with total 1699 study subjects and 2009 controls. RESULTS Significant statistical differences overall were observed, based on a random effects model (SMD (95 % CI), -0.78[-1.40, -0.16], P = 0.014). Data from 19 of these studies indicated significant statistical differences between cancerous patients and controls with regard to serum and plasma Zn concentration (SMD [(95 %CI): -1.61(-2.43, -0.79)]. There was a significant statistical difference between the breast tissue and hair as regards Zn status (SMD (95%CI): 2.32(1.42, 3.21)) and (SMD (95v%CI): -1.80(-3.41, -0.20), respectively. Zn concentration levels typically decreased in blood and hair samples of patients with breast cancer, whereas it was elevated in tumor tissues. CONCLUSIONS There is a significant relationship between lowered serum Zn concentrations and risk of breast cancer onset or recurrences in women, but because of high heterogeneity, we recommend other primary studies.

Abstract
We investigated oxidative stress parameters in the sera of patients with lung cancer and healthy individuals to evaluate their correlations with lung cancer.Ninety-four lung cancer patients and 64 healthy controls were enrolled after obtaining informed consent. Their sera oxidative stress parameters were measured.Total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) were significantly different between patients and healthy groups (all P < .001). TAS gradually decreased and TOS and OSI gradually increased from stage I to III, but it did not reach statistical significance (all P > .05). TAS and OSI were significantly different between the nonsmoking and smoking groups, radiotherapy and without radiotherapy groups, chemotherapy and without chemotherapy groups (P < .05), but not TOS (P > .05). In a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis comparing patients with lung cancer with healthy controls, the Youden indices of TOS, TAS, and OSI were 0.541, 0.532, and 1, respectively.The oxidative stress may be correlation with lung cancer staging. Smoking, surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy showed correlation with parts oxidative stress parameters.
