Lead-induced changes in plant cell ultrastructure: an overview

Lead (Pb) is one of the most harmful toxic metals and causes severe damage to plants even at low concentrations. Pb inhibits plant development, reduces photosynthesis rates, and causes metabolic disfunctions. Plant cells display these alterations in the form of abnormal morphological modifications resulting from ultrastructural changes in the cell wall, plasma membrane, chloroplast, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and nuclei. Depending on plant tolerance capacity, the ultrastructural changes could be either a sign of toxicity that limits plant development or an adaptive strategy to cope with Pb stress. This paper gathers data on Pb-induced changes in cell ultrastructure observed in many tolerant and hyperaccumulator plants and describes the ultrastructural changes that appear to be mechanisms to alleviate Pb toxicity. The different modifications caused by Pb in cell organelles are summarized and reinforced with hypotheses that provide an overview of plant responses to Pb stress and explain the physiological and morphological changes that occur in tolerant plants. These ultrastructural modifications could help assess the potential of plants for use in phytoremediation.

CDR1, a DUF946 domain containing protein, positively regulates cadmium tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana by maintaining the stability of OPT3 protein

Industrial and agricultural production processes lead to the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in soil, resulting in crops absorb Cd from contaminated soil and then transfer it to human body through the food chain, posing a serious threat to human health. Thus, it is necessary to explore novel genes and mechanisms involved in regulating Cd tolerance and detoxification in plants. Here, we found that CDR1, a DUF946 domain containing protein, localizes to the plasma membrane and positively regulates Cd stress tolerance. The cdr1 mutants exhibited Cd sensitivity, accumulated excessive Cd in the seeds and roots, but decreased in leaves. However, CDR1-OE transgenic plants not only showed Cd tolerance but also significantly reduced Cd in seeds and roots. Additionally, both in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated an interaction between CDR1 and OPT3. Cell free protein degradation and OPT3 protein level determination assays indicated that CDR1 could maintain the stability of OPT3 protein. Moreover, genetic phenotype analysis and Cd content determination showed that CDR1 regulates Cd stress tolerance and affect the distribution of Cd in plants by maintaining the stability of OPT3 protein. Our discoveries provide a key candidate gene for directional breeding to reduce Cd accumulation in edible seeds of crops.

Invasive Amaranthus spp. for heavy metal phytoremediation: Investigations of cadmium and lead accumulation and soil microbial community in three zinc mining areas

Amaranthus spp. are a group of strongly invasive and vigorous plants, and heavy metal phytoremediation using alien invasive Amaranthus spp. has been a popular research topic. In this study, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) of Amaranthus spp. were evaluated, focusing on the accumulation potential of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) by plants from three different zinc mining areas, namely Huayuan (HYX), Yueyang (LYX), and Liuyang (LYX). The HYX area has the most severe Cd contamination, while the LYX area has the most apparent Pb contamination. The results showed that Amaranthus spp. had a strong Cd and Pb enrichment capacity in low-polluted areas. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we used high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions to analyze rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities in three areas. The results showed significant differences in the structure, function, and composition of microbial communities and complex interactions between plants and their microbes. The correlation analysis revealed that some key microorganisms (e.g., Amycolatopsis, Bryobacterium, Sphingomonas, Flavobacterium, Agaricus, Nigrospora, Humicola) could regulate several soil factors such as soil pH, organic matter (OM), available nitrogen (AN), and available phosphorus (AP) to affect the heavy metal enrichment capacity of plants. Notably, some enzymes (e.g., P-type ATPases, Cysteine synthase, Catalase, Acid phosphatase) and genes (e.g., ZIP gene family, and ArsR, MerR, Fur, NikR transcription regulators) have been found to be involved in promoting Cd and Pb accumulation in Amaranthus spp. This study can provide new ideas for managing heavy metal-contaminated soils and new ways for the ecological resource utilization of invasive plants in phytoremediation.

L-arginine attenuates dichlorvos-induced testicular toxicity in male Wistar rats by suppressing oxidative stress-dependent activation of caspase 3-mediated apoptosis

BACKGROUND

The continuous use of pesticides, such as dichlorvos, is a common agricultural and domestic practice. However, it is associated with shortfalls like testicular toxicity through the induction of oxidative stress-mediated signaling. On the other hand, L-arginine, a precursor of nitric oxide, has been reported to exert antioxidant activities and thus may attenuate dichlorvos-induced testicular toxicity.

AIM

Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the effect of L-arginine treatment on dichlorvos-induced testicular toxicity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into four equal groups. The control rats were administered 0.5 mL of distilled water, dichlorvos- (DDVP-) treated rats were exposed to DDVP via inhalation for 15 min, DDVP + L-arginine-treated rats were exposed to DDVP and also received 100 mg/kg b.w/day, while L-arginine-treated rats received 100 mg/kg b.w/day.

RESULTS

DDVP exposure significantly reduced testicular nitric oxide, relative testicular weight, lowered sperm count, viability, and motility, and suppressed serum FSH, LH, and testosterone levels. These findings were associated with a rise in testicular malondialdehyde, TNF-α, IL-6, and 8OHdG levels and caspase 3 activities, and a reduction in GSH and superoxide dismutase. Additionally, on histopathological examination, DDVP was observed to reduce mature sperm cells in the seminiferous tubular lumen and induce focal vascular congestion in the interstitial space. Nonetheless, L-arginine treatment significantly attenuated DDVP-induced biochemical and histological alterations.

CONCLUSION

This study showed that L-arginine attenuated testicular toxicity by improving epididymal sperm variables and male sex hormones by suppressing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in DDVP-exposed rats.

Unlocking the versatility of nitric oxide in plants and insights into its molecular interplays under biotic and abiotic stress

In plants, nitric oxide (NO) has become a versatile signaling molecule essential for mediating a wide range of physiological processes under various biotic and abiotic stress conditions. The fundamental function of NO under various stress scenarios has led to a paradigm shift in which NO is now seen as both a free radical liberated from the toxic product of oxidative metabolism and an agent that aids in plant sustenance. Numerous studies on NO biology have shown that NO is an important signal for germination, leaf senescence, photosynthesis, plant growth, pollen growth, and other processes. It is implicated in defense responses against pathogensas well as adaptation of plants in response to environmental cues like salinity, drought, and temperature extremes which demonstrates its multifaceted role. NO can carry out its biological action in a variety of ways, including interaction with protein kinases, modifying gene expression, and releasing secondary messengers. In addition to these signaling events, NO may also be in charge of the chromatin modifications, nitration, and S-nitrosylation-induced posttranslational modifications (PTM) of target proteins. Deciphering the molecular mechanism behind its essential function is essential to unravel the regulatory networks controlling the responses of plants to various environmental stimuli. Taking into consideration the versatile role of NO, an effort has been made to interpret its mode of action based on the post-translational modifications and to cover shreds of evidence for increased growth parameters along with an altered gene expression.

Assessment of seasonal variations in soil heavy metal concentrations and potential health risks in Gujarat, India

This study investigates the prevalence, distribution, and ecological consequences of 21 heavy metals (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn) in the soils between the Mahi and Dhadhar rivers in Gujarat, India. It aims to assess the seasonal variations in soil contamination and the potential human health risk associated with the heavy metal exposure through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact pathways. Soil samples were collected from 57 sites across three distinct seasons and analyzed using indices such as the geo-accumulation index, contamination factor, pollution load index, ecological risk factor, and global potential ecological risk. Human health risks were also evaluated for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects. The findings reveal significant soil contamination, especially during the Monsoon and Post-Monsoon seasons, with heavy metals like Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, and Pb posing considerable ecological threats. Cr and Ni were identified as presenting the highest carcinogenic risks, while Fe and Cr posed major non-carcinogenic challenges. Seasonal variations significantly influenced heavy metal concentrations and distribution patterns. The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive policies and sustainable practices to mitigate soil contamination and protect environmental health. It emphasizes the critical role of human activities, such as industrial, agricultural, and mining operations, in soil degradation and calls for increased community awareness and action to address these challenges.

Lead toxicity regulation via protein degradation and tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathways in Brassica species: A comparative quantitative analysis of proteomic study

Understanding the heavy metals (HMs) tolerance mechanism is crucial for improving plant growth in metal-contaminated soil. In order to evaluate the lead (Pb) tolerance mechanism in Brassica species, a comparative proteomic study was used. Thirteen-day-old seedlings of B. juncea and B. napus were treated with different Pb(NO3)2 concentrations at 0, 3, 30, and 300 mg/L. Under 300 mg/L Pb(NO3)2 concentration, B. napus growth was significantly decreased, while B. juncea maintained normal growth similar to the control. The Pb accumulation was also higher in B. napus root and shoot compared to B. juncea. Gel-free proteomic analysis of roots revealed a total of 68 and 37 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) in B. juncea and B. napus-specifically, after 300 mg/L Pb exposure. The majority of these proteins are associated with protein degradation, cellular respiration, and enzyme classification. The upregulated RPT2 and tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathway-associated proteins maintain the cellular homeostasis and photosynthetic rate in B. juncea. Among the 55 common DAPs, S-adenosyl methionine and TCA cycle proteins were upregulated in B. juncea and down-regulated in B. napus after Pb exposure. Furthermore, higher oxidative stress also reduced the antioxidant enzyme activity in B. napus. The current finding suggests that B. juncea is more Pb tolerant than B. napus, possibly due to the upregulation of proteins involved in protein recycling, degradation, and tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathway.

Residues from the Fundão Dam Accident in Brazil and their Effects on Photosynthetic Efficiency of Two Restinga Plant Species

In 2015, a breach in the Fundão Dam in Mariana (Minas Gerais State, Brazil) resulted in the release of contaminated tailings into the Doce River basin. This accident increased the concentrations of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), vanadium (V), and manganese (Mn) in the soil, posing a potential hazard to the physiology of native species. The purpose of this study was to assess whether chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF) in Allagoptera arenaria and Guapira pernambucensis changed following this accident when tested under different precipitation regimes in relation to soil properties and metal(loid) absorption. Our research was conducted in two sites located in the state of Espírito Santo in southeastern Brazil. Five independent biological replicates of A. arenaria and G. pernambucensis were selected at each site for nutritional and chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis. Five years after the dam rupture, A. arenaria and G. pernambucensis had absorbed As, Pb, and V. The increased amounts of metal(loid)s absorbed did not significantly impair the OJIP curve configuration for either species during the evaluated periods. However, A. arenaria at Biological Reserve of Comboios (RBC) during the rainy season showed increases in the values of maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (φP0) and total performance index on absorption basis (PITOTAL). These changes indicated more efficient tolerance mechanisms for increases in the concentrations of As, Pb, and V than those observed in G. pernambucensis. It was concluded that A. arenaria and G. pernambucensis exhibited an acclimation strategy in response to increased absorption of metal(loid)s.

Chromiomics: Chromium detoxification and approaches for engineering tolerance in plants

Chromium (Cr) is a heavy metal that poses a grave threat to the ecosystem including plants. Chromium is very harmful to plants due to its effects on many physiological and metabolic pathways culminating in a negative impact on plant's growth, development, and ability to take up nutrients. Plants have developed physiological, biochemical, and molecular ways of defense against Cr, such as by augmenting antioxidant potential to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS). A number of genes have been discovered to play a significant role in the defense mechanisms of plants against Cr, for example, genes associated with the activation of phytochelatins, metallothioneins, and those of enzymes like glutathione-S-transferases. Along with this, a few miRNAs have been found to be associated in alleviating Cr stress and, to augment plant tolerance by controlling transcription factors, HSPs, and the expression of a few proteins and hormones. Defense pathway genes and miRNAs have been used for the generation of transgenic phytoremediator plants. Not only do the transgenic plants have a higher tolerance to Cr, but they also act as hyperaccumulators for Cr and have the potential to remediate other heavy metals. This article describes about environmental Cr contamination, Cr effects on plants, different genes and miRNAs involved in Cr stress mitigation and use of candidate genes, microRNAs for creating transgenic plant systems for phytoremediation, and the applications of CRISPR technology. It is expected that the integration of omics approach and advanced genomics will offer scope for more effective phytoremediation of Chromium in the coming years.

Cytokinin and indole-3-acetic acid crosstalk is indispensable for silicon mediated chromium stress tolerance in roots of wheat seedlings

The rising heavy metal contamination of soils imposes toxic impacts on plants as well as other life forms. One such highly toxic and carcinogenic heavy metal is hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] that has been reported to prominently retard the plant growth. The present study investigated the potential of silicon (Si, 10 µM) to alleviate the toxicity of Cr(VI) (25 µM) on roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings. Application of Si to Cr(VI)-stressed wheat seedlings improved their overall growth parameters. This study also reveals the involvement of two phytohormones, namely auxin and cytokinin and their crosstalk in Si-mediated mitigation of the toxic impacts of Cr(VI) in wheat seedlings. The application of cytokinin alone to wheat seedlings under Cr(VI) stress reduced the intensity of toxic effects of Cr(VI). In combination with Si, cytokinin application to Cr(VI)-stressed wheat seedlings significantly minimized the decrease induced by Cr(VI) in different parameters such as root-shoot length (10.8% and 13%, respectively), root-shoot fresh mass (11.3% and 10.1%, respectively), and total chlorophyll and carotenoids content (13.4% and 6.8%, respectively) with respect to the control. This treatment also maintained the regulation of proline metabolism (proline content, and P5CS and PDH activities), ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle and nutrient homeostasis. The protective effect of Si and cytokinin against Cr(VI) stress was minimized upon supplementation of an inhibitor of polar auxin transport- 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) which suggested a potential involvement of auxin in Si and cytokinin-mediated mitigation of Cr(VI) toxicity. The exogenous addition of a natural auxin - indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) confirmed auxin is an active member of a signaling cascade along with cytokinin that aids in Si-mediated Cr(VI) toxicity alleviation as IAA application reversed the negative impacts of TIBA on wheat roots treated with Cr(VI), cytokinin and Si. The results of this research are also confirmed by the gene expression analysis conducted for nutrient transporters (Lsi1, CCaMK, MHX, SULT1 and ZIP1) and enzymes involved in the AsA-GSH cycle (APX, GR, DHAR and MDHAR). The overall results of this research indicate towards possible induction of a crosstalk between cytokinin and IAA upon Si supplementation which in turn stimulates physiological, biochemical and molecular changes to exhibit protective effects against Cr(VI) stress. Further, the information obtained suggests probable employment of Si, cytokinin and IAA alone or combined in agriculture to maintain plant productivity under Cr(VI) stress and data regarding expression of key genes can be used to develop new crop varieties with enhanced resistance against Cr(VI) stress together with its reduced load in seedlings.

Integrated ultrastructural, physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analysis uncovers the mechanisms by which nicotinamide alleviates cadmium toxicity in Pistia stratiotes L

Exogenous nicotinamide (NIC) is a promising solution to relieve heavy metal (HM) toxicity in plants. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. As NIC addition (200 μM) can increase the tolerance of Pistia stratiotes L. to Cd stress (10 mg L-1), this strategy was subjected to integrated ultrastructural, physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analysis to reveal the mechanisms involved. Exogenous NIC initiated a series of physiological, transcriptional, and metabolic responses that alleviated Cd damage. NIC addition improved Cd transfer from roots to leaves and reduced Cd damage in roots. The transported Cd to leaves did not induce further toxicity because it was abundantly compartmentalised in cell walls, which might be mediated by lignin synthesis. Moreover, NIC addition improved the repair of photosystem II in leaves under Cd stress by inducing key genes (e.g., chlorophyll A-B binding protein and PSII repair protein encoding genes), resulting in the restoration of Fv/Fm. In addition, antioxidant enzyme activities (e.g., peroxidase and catalase) and synthesis of antioxidants (e.g., stachydrine and curculigoside) were triggered to overcome oxidative stress. Our work paves the way for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which NIC alleviates HM toxicity in plants, providing a basis for improving phytoremediation.

Role of methylglyoxal and glyoxalase in the regulation of plant response to heavy metal stress

KEY MESSAGE

Methylglyoxal and glyoxalase function a significant role in plant response to heavy metal stress. We update and discuss the most recent developments of methylglyoxal and glyoxalase in regulating plant response to heavy metal stress. Methylglyoxal (MG), a by-product of several metabolic processes, is created by both enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms. It plays an important role in plant growth and development, signal transduction, and response to heavy metal stress (HMS). Changes in MG content and glyoxalase (GLY) activity under HMS imply that they may be potential biomarkers of plant stress resistance. In this review, we summarize recent advances in research on the mechanisms of MG and GLY in the regulation of plant responses to HMS. It has been discovered that appropriate concentrations of MG assist plants in maintaining a balance between growth and development and survival defense, therefore shielding them from heavy metal harm. MG and GLY regulate plant physiological processes by remodeling cellular redox homeostasis, regulating stomatal movement, and crosstalking with other signaling molecules (including abscisic acid, gibberellic acid, jasmonic acid, cytokinin, salicylic acid, melatonin, ethylene, hydrogen sulfide, and nitric oxide). We also discuss the involvement of MG and GLY in the regulation of plant responses to HMS at the transcriptional, translational, and metabolic levels. Lastly, considering the current state of research, we present a perspective on the future direction of MG research to elucidate the MG anti-stress mechanism and offer a theoretical foundation and useful advice for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated environments in the future.

Biospectroscopic fingerprinting phytotoxicity towards environmental monitoring for food security and contaminated site remediation

Human activities have resulted in severe environmental pollution since the industrial revolution. Phytotoxicity-based environmental monitoring is well known due to its sedentary nature, abundance, and sensitivity to environmental changes, which are essential preconditions to avoiding potential environmental and ecological risks. However, conventional morphological and physiological methods for phytotoxicity assessment mainly focus on descriptive determination rather than mechanism analysis and face challenges of labour and time-consumption, lack of standardized protocol and difficulties in data interpretation. Molecular-based tests could reveal the toxicity mechanisms but fail in real-time and in-situ monitoring because of their endpoint manner and destructive operation in collecting cellular components. Herein, we systematically propose and lay out a biospectroscopic tool (e.g., infrared and Raman spectroscopy) coupled with multivariate data analysis as a relatively non-destructive and high-throughput approach to quantitatively measure phytotoxicity levels and qualitatively profile phytotoxicity mechanisms by classifying spectral fingerprints of biomolecules in plant tissues in response to environmental stresses. With established databases and multivariate analysis, this biospectroscopic fingerprinting approach allows ultrafast, in situ and on-site diagnosis of phytotoxicity. Overall, the proposed protocol and validation of biospectroscopic fingerprinting phytotoxicity can distinguish the representative biomarkers and interrogate the relevant mechanisms to quantify the stresses of interest, e.g., environmental pollutants. This state-of-the-art concept and design broaden the knowledge of phytotoxicity assessment, advance novel implementations of phytotoxicity assay, and offer vast potential for long-term field phytotoxicity monitoring trials in situ.

On-Off-On Fluorometric Detection of Hg(II) and L-Cysteine Using Red Emissive Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots for Environmental and Clinical Sample Analysis

This research introduces a novel fluorescence sensor 'on-off-on' employing nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with an 'on-off-on' mechanism for the selective and sensitive detection of Hg(II) and L-cysteine (L-Cys). N-CDs was synthesized using citric acid as the carbon precursor and urea as the nitrogen source in dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent, resulting in red emissive characteristics under UV light. Comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including UV-Vis, fluorescence, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, Raman, and Zeta potential techniques, validated the structural and optical characteristics of the synthesized N-CDs. The maximum excitation and emission of N-CDs were observed at 548 and 622 nm, respectively. The quantum yield of N-CDs was calculated to be 16.1%. The fluorescence of N-CDs effectively quenches upon the addition of Hg(II) due to the strong coordination between Hg(II) and the surface functionalities of N-CDs. Conversely, upon the subsequent addition of L-Cys, the fluorescence of N-CDs was restored. This restoration can be attributed to the stronger affinity of the -SH group in L-Cys towards Hg(II) relative to the surface functionalities of N-CDs. This dual-mode response enabled the detection of Hg(II) and L-Cys with impressive detection limits of 15.1 nM and 8.0 nM, respectively. This sensor methodology effectively detects Hg(II) in lake water samples and L-Cys levels in human urine, with a recovery range between 99 and 101%. Furthermore, the N-CDs demonstrated excellent stability, high sensitivity, and selectivity, making them a promising fluorescence on-off-on probe for both environmental monitoring of Hg(II) and clinical diagnostics of L-Cys.

Silicon dioxide nanoparticles enhance plant growth, photosynthetic performance, and antioxidants defence machinery through suppressing chromium uptake in Brassica napus L

Chromium (Cr) is a highly toxic heavy metal that is extensively released into the soil and drastically reduces plant yield. Silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) were chosen to mitigate Cr toxicity due to their ability to interact with heavy metals and reduce their uptake. This manuscript explores the mechanisms of Cr-induced toxicity and the potential of Si NPs to mitigate Cr toxicity by regulating photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defence, along with the role of transcription factors and heavy metal transporter genes in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). Rapeseed plants were grown hydroponically and subjected to hexavalent Cr stress (50 and 100 μM) in the form of K2Cr2O7 solution. Si NPs were foliar sprayed at concentrations of 50, 100 and 150 μM. The findings showed that 100 μM Si NPs under 100 μM Cr stress significantly increased the leaf Si content by 169% while reducing Cr uptake by 92% and 76% in roots and leaves, respectively. The presence of Si NPs inside the plant leaf cells was confirmed by using energy-dispersive spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The study's findings showed that Cr had adverse effects on plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange attributes, leaf mesophyll ultrastructure, PSII performance and the activity of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants. However, Si NPs minimized Cr-induced toxicity by reducing total Cr accumulation and decreasing oxidative damage, as evidenced by reduced ROS production (such as H2O2 and MDA) and increased enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant activities in plants. Interestingly, Si NPs under Cr stress effectively increased the NPQ, ETR and QY of PSII, indicating a robust protective response of PSII against stress. Furthermore, the enhancement of Cr tolerance facilitated by Si NPs was linked to the upregulation of genes associated with antioxidant enzymes and transcription factors, alongside the concurrent reduction in metal transporter activity.

Metal sequestration by Microcystis extracellular polymers: a promising path to greener water treatment

The problem of heavy metal pollution in water bodies poses a significant threat to both the environment and human health, as these toxic substances can persist in aquatic ecosystems and accumulate in the food chain. This study investigates the promising potential of using Microcystis aeruginosa extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as an environmentally friendly, highly efficient solution for capturing copper (Cu2+) and nickel (Ni2+) ions in water treatment, emphasizing their exceptional ability to promote green technology in heavy metal sequestration. We quantified saccharides, proteins, and amino acids in M. aeruginosa biomass and isolated EPS, highlighting their metal-chelating capabilities. Saccharide content was 36.5 mg g-1 in biomass and 21.4 mg g-1 in EPS, emphasizing their metal-binding ability. Proteins and amino acids were also prevalent, particularly in EPS. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed intricate 3D EPS structures, with pronounced porosity and branching configurations enhancing metal sorption. Elemental composition via energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) identified essential elements in both biomass and EPS. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy unveiled molecular changes after metal treatment, indicating various binding mechanisms, including oxygen atom coordination, π-electron interactions, and electrostatic forces. Kinetic studies showed EPS expedited and enhanced Cu2+ and Ni2+ sorption compared to biomass. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed exothermic, spontaneous sorption. Equilibrium biosorption studies displayed strong binding and competitive interactions in binary metal systems. Importantly, EPS exhibited impressive maximum sorption capacities of 44.81 mg g-1 for Ni2+ and 37.06 mg g-1 for Cu2+. These findings underscore the potential of Microcystis EPS as a highly efficient sorbent for heavy metal removal in water treatment, with significant implications for environmental remediation and sustainable water purification.

The effect of exogenous plant growth regulators on elevated Cd phytoremediation by Solanum nigrum L. in contaminated soil

Maximizing amendment potential is an emphasis in the HM-contaminated field of phytoremediation by hyperaccumulators due to the low bioavailability of HMs in soils and small biomass yields of plants. This study investigated the influence of different types and concentrations of plant growth regulators on Cd phytoremediation by Solanum nigrum in contaminated soil. Our conclusions showed that the shoot Cd extractions (μg plant-1) and the root and shoot biomasses at all the treatments remarkedly increased compared with that of the CK (p < 0.05), while the Cd concentrations at root and aboveground parts by S. nigrum, the extractable Cd concentrations, and pH value of soils did not change significantly compared with the CK (p < 0.05). Furthermore, correlation analysis showed that the shoot Cd phytoaccumulation and the root and aboveground biomasses of S. nigrum were particularly dependent upon the application of CTK and GA3 concentration gradient (p < 0.05). Moreover, some related physicochemical indexes were determined for supervising the growth conditions of plants, and these results pointed out that after exogenous PGRs treatments, the chlorophyll content and antioxidative enzymes POD and SOD activities in vivo of plants clearly advanced, while the H2O2 and MDA contents and CAT apparently declined. These consequence demonstrated that the exogenous PGR addition prominently reinforced the Cd phytoextraction capacity of S. nigrum in contaminated soil by stimulating plant growth and increasing shoot yields.

Adaptation of Betula pendula Roth., Pinus sylvestris L., and Larix decidua Mill. to environmental stress caused by tailings waste highly contaminated by trace elements

The seedlings of some tree species can successfully develop in areas polluted by heavy metals. Research on such species is important in order to explore the possibility of introducing tree species for the permanent biological stabilization and reclamation of post-flotation tailings, especially after the final recycling of trace metals, but where concentrations remain much higher than in natural soils. To better understand the adaptation and reaction of Betula pendula Roth., Pinus sylvestris L., and Larix decidua Mill. seedlings to heavy metals pollution caused by tailings waste highly contaminated by trace elements: 1) the relationships between the concentration of heavy metals in the soil substrate, the efficiency of heavy metal ions accumulation in plant organs, and the biometric parameters of the seedlings; and 2) the threshold content of heavy metals in the roots above which the plant physiological response is triggered was determined. We assume that there are certain limit concentrations of heavy metals in the soil and fine roots, which depend on the tree species and beyond which the plant responds strongly to stressThe obtained results showed that Betula is a suitable species for the phytostabilization of post-flotation tailings due to its rapid growth rate and production of root biomass. The accumulation of metals in Betula roots was found to be much greater than in Pinus and Larix. Despite the high concentrations of heavy metals in the prepared substrates, there was only a slight transfer of these elements to the aboveground parts of the plant. At high soil concentrations, the heavy metals adversely affected the cellular and physiological processes of plants. In plants growing in such conditions, the activity of the antioxidant system depended both on the species and organ of the plant, as well as on the type and metal concentration.

Probabilistic Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Mining Soils Based on Fractions: A Case Study in Southern Shaanxi, China

With rapid economic development, soil heavy metal (HM) pollution has emerged as a global environmental concern. Because the toxicity of HMs differs dramatically among various fractions, risk assessments based on these fractions are of great significance for environmental management. This study employed a modified Hakanson index approach to evaluate the possible ecological impacts of soil HMs in a gold mine tailings pond in Shaanxi Province, China. A modified Hakanson-Monte Carlo model was built to perform a probabilistic risk assessment. The results showed that: (1) the exceedance rates of chromium (Cr) and zinc (Zn) were 68.75% and 93.75%, respectively. Moreover, the overall concentrations of nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) were higher than the background soil environmental values in China. (2) HMs with the lowest oxidizable fraction were mostly present in the residual fraction. The oxidizable portions of Cr, Cu, and Pb and the reducible and residual fractions of As were notably distinct. (3) The risk degrees of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn were low; those of As and Pb were very high and moderate; and the comprehensive ecological hazard index was very high. This study offers a solid scientific foundation for ecological risk notification and environmental management.

Influences of peanut hull-derived biochar, Trichoderma harzianum and supplemental phosphorus on hairy vetch growth in Pb- and Zn-contaminated soil

In the present study, in order to improve the growth performance of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth., Local landrace from Ardabil, Iran) seedlings grown in the soil contaminated with heavy metals Pb and Zn, our attention was directed toward the application of biochar, inoculation with conidial suspension of Trichoderma harzianum Rifai-T22 and management of phosphorus (P) nutrition. Heavy metal toxicity reduced leaf greenness, membrane stability index, maximum quantum yield of PSΙΙ (Fv/Fm), P concentration and uptake in plant tissues and root and shoot biomass, but increased Pb and Zn concentration and uptake in root and leaf, H2O2 and malondialdehyde content and CAT and POX activity in the leaves. The application of biochar, inoculation with Trichoderma fungus and P supplementation increased the shoot P content, which might contribute to the alleviation of P insufficiency and a subsequent elevation in P transfer to aboveground biomass, and eliminated the toxicity of heavy metal on hairy vetch plants, which was revealed in reducing oxidative stress and enhancing plant growth performance. The biochar considerably increased Zn immobilization, while being able to slightly stabilize Pb. Co-application of Trichoderma and 22 mg P/kg soil (22P) increased the concentration and uptake of Zn in the roots and decreased the translocation of this element to the shoots, especially when biochar was not amended. Although the biochar and P inputs could compensate the negative Trichoderma effects, the results suggested that biochar application in combination with fungal inoculation and 22-P supplementation could not only increase hairy vetch growth performance but also decline heavy metal uptake to ensure the production of a forage crop in soils polluted with heavy metals based on the nutritional standards of livestock.

Potential functions of engineered nanomaterials in cadmium remediation in soil-plant system: A review

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is a global environmental issue facing agriculture. Under certain conditions, the stable Cd that bound to soil particles tend to be remobilized and absorbed into plants, which is seriously toxic to plant growth and threat food safety. Engineering nanomaterials (ENMs) has attracted increasing attentions in the remediation of Cd pollution in soil-plant system due to their excellent properties with nano-scale size. Herein, this article firstly systematically summarized Cd transformation in soil, transport in soil-plant system, and the toxic effects in plants, following which the functions of ENMs in these processes to remediate Cd pollution are comprehensively reviewed, including immobilization of Cd in soil, inhibition in Cd uptake, transport, and accumulation, as well as physiological detoxication to Cd stress. Finally, some issues to be further studied were raised to promote nano-remediation technology in the environment. This review provides a significant reference for the practical application of ENMs in remediation of Cd pollution in soil, and contributes to sustainable development of agriculture.

Morpho-physiological growth performance and anti-oxidative capabilities of Acacia jacquemontii and Acacia nilotica upon exposure to Co3O4 Nbs in lead-contaminated soil

Immense crowd of heavy metal in cultivated land is evolving as a global concern as a result of boosted level of soil toxicity. Amongst various metals, Lead (Pb) contamination has become alarming for plant and human heath through ingesting of polluted soils and food crops. To counterfeit this, a nanotechnological neutralizer effective in form of soiling of cobalt oxide Co3O4 Nbs to Acacia jacquemontii and Acacia nilotica with various meditations as 25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm). A Substantial result was observed on growth of plants but premium results were got by applications of cobalt oxide Nbs at 75 ppm. By this means, enhanced root length (39%), fresh weight (32%), shoot length (58%), as well as dry weight (28%) in selected Acacia species compared to control. Chlrophy contents in A. jacquemontii were estimated to be 0.23, 2.73 and 3.19 mg/L with treated with different concentrations of cobalt Nbs while in A. nilotica, the contents were 0.51, 2.93 and 3.12 mg/L respectively on same concentration. The atomic absorption (AAS), antioxidant activity and defendable positive comeback by using Co3O4 Nbs. Hence, the greenly synthesized Co3O4 Nbs counter acts lead toxicity to override and preserving the growth of plant. Such nanotechnological kits can consequently enhance the alternative system to stunned toxicity for distinguish the yield demand end to end with the progress of agronomic management approaches.

Foliar architecture differentially restrains metal sequestration capacity in wheat grains (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in hyper-chloride-contaminated soils

Anthropogenic activities, such as industrial wastewater and use of water softeners, cause hyper-accumulation of Cl- in water sources and soils. Currently, industries have no sustainable method to remove these Cl- ions from wastewater. This study was conducted to evaluate the integrative responses of wheat cultivated in five industrial effluent-affected areas (S2-S6) by investigating soil characters and bioaccumulation of metals in wheat plants and grains. The S4 site (near the second chloride outlet) exhibited a higher concentration of CO2, SO2, NO2, Cl-, Cd, Mn, Ni, Cr, and Zn. Soil from S6 (sewage wastewater downstream getting mixed with chloride-contaminated water) had a minimum level of nutrients (Na, K, and Ca), maximum metals (Cd, Fe, Pb, Mn), and reduction in plant biomass. In site S2 (sewage wastewater upstream of the chloride factory), a higher level of minerals and metals was noted in the roots. Maximum metals in grains occurred in S6 with higher organic osmolytes. The sequestration capacity of metals in leaves was also increased by alterations in anatomical traits. Results indicated that metals and hyper-Cl- concentration employed a negative influence on the plants because of poor soil quality, extremely damaged microstructures leading to reduced yield, poor grain quality, and excessive translocation from roots to wheat grains. These findings revealed that contaminated plants used as either green forage or hay are noxious to animals and if used as grain for feed or humans can lead to serious health hazards.

Endophytic Fungus Talaromyces sp. MR1 Promotes the Growth and Cadmium Uptake of Arabidopsis thaliana L. Under Cadmium Stress

Endophytes play essential roles in plant growth under metal(loid)s stress. An endophytic fungus strain MR1 was isolated from the roots of Miscanthus floridulus collected from a lead-zinc mining area (Huayuan, China), which could produce indole-3-acetic acid and have Cadmium (Cd) tolerance. Further 18S rRNA sequencing analysis showed that it was highly similar (99.83%) to Talaromyces pinophilus. In pot experiments, we explored the effects of strain MR1 on the growth and Cd uptake of a wide-type Arabidopsis thaliana under low (LC) and high (HC) Cd concentrations. The results showed that MR1 effectively increased the dry weight of aboveground and underground tissues by 25.95-107.21% in both LC and HC groups. Due to MR1 inoculation, the Cd content in the underground tissues was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased by 39.28% under low Cd concentration, while it was significantly (p < 0.05) increased by 28.28% under high Cd concentration. Besides, MR1 inoculations significantly (p < 0.05) increased the total content of removed Cd (17.080 μg) and BCF (0.064) by 129.77% and 153.95% under high Cd concentration. Therefore, we speculated that MR1 might be selected as the effective microbial agent to increase crop yield and control Cd content in the crop in light Cd-contaminated soil. Besides, MR1 could potentially enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of extremely Cd-contaminated soil.

Decolorization of reactive azo dye using novel halotolerant yeast consortium HYC and proposed degradation pathway

The presence of high salinity levels in textile wastewater poses a significant obstacle to the process of decolorizing azo dyes. The present study involved the construction of a yeast consortium HYC, which is halotolerant and was recently isolated from wood-feeding termites. The consortium HYC was mainly comprised of Sterigmatomyces halophilus SSA-1575 and Meyerozyma guilliermondii SSA-1547. The developed consortium demonstrated a decolourization efficiency of 96.1% when exposed to a concentration of 50 mg/l of Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The HYC consortium significantly decolorized RB5 up to concentrations of 400 mg/l and in the presence of NaCl up to 50 g/l. The effects of physicochemical factors and the degradation pathway were systematically investigated. The optimal pH, salinity, temperature, and initial dye concentration were 7.0, 3%, 35 °C and 50 mg/l, respectively. The co-carbon source was found to be essential, and the addition of glucose resulted in a 93% decolorization of 50 mg/l RB5. The enzymatic activity of various oxido-reductases was assessed, revealing that NADH-DCIP reductase and azo reductase exhibited greater activity in comparison to other enzymes. UV-Visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were utilized to identify the metabolites generated during the degradation of RB5. Subsequently, a metabolic pathway was proposed. The confirmation of degradation was established through alterations in the functional groups and modifications in molecular weight. The findings indicate that this halotolerant yeast consortium exhibits promising potential of degrading dye compounds. The results of this study offer significant theoretical basis and crucial perspectives for the implementation of halotolerant yeast consortia in the bioremediation of textile and hypersaline wastewater. This approach is particularly noteworthy as it does not produce aromatic amines.

How could actinobacteria augment the growth and redox homeostasis in barley plants grown in TiO2NPs-contaminated soils? A growth and biochemical study

The increases in titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) released into the environment have raised concerns about their toxicity. However, their phytotoxic impact on plants is not well studied. Therefore, this study aimed at a deeper understanding of the TiO2-NPs phytotoxic impact on barley (Hordeum vulgare) growth and stress defense. We also hypothesized that soil inoculation with bioactive Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 strain can be applied as a biological fertilizer to alleviate TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity. At TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity level, photosynthesis was significantly retarded (∼50% reduction) in TiO2-NPs treated-barley plants which accordingly affect the biomass of barley plants. This retardation was accompanied by a remarkable induction of oxidative damage (H2O2, lipid peroxidation) with a concomitant reduction in the antioxidant defense metabolism. At a glance, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 ameliorated the reduction in growth by enhancing the photosynthetic efficiency in contaminated barley plants. Moreover, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 inoculation reduced the oxidative damage induced by TiO2-NPs via quenching H2O2 production and lipid peroxidation. Regarding the antioxidant defense arsenal, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 enhanced both enzymatic (e.g. peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), …. etc.) and non-enzymatic (glutathione (GSH), ascorbate (ASC), polyphenols, flavonoids, tocopherols) antioxidants in shoots and to a greater extent roots of barley plants. Moreover, the inoculation significantly enhanced the heavy metal-detoxifying metabolites (eg. phytochelatins, glutaredoxin, thioredoxin, peroxiredoxin) as well as metal-detoxifying enzymes in barley shoots and more apparently in roots of TiO2-NPs stressed plants. Furthermore, there was an organ-specific response to TiO2-NPs and Rhodospirillum sp. JY3. To this end, this study shed light, for the first time, on the molecular bases underlie TiO2-NPs stress mitigating impact of Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 and it introduced Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 as a promising eco-friendly tool in managing environmental risks to maintain agricultural sustainability.

Heavy Metal Induced Oxidative Stress Mitigation and ROS Scavenging in Plants

Although trace elements are essential for life, environmental contamination due to metal accumulation and overuse in various sectors, such as healthcare, agriculture, industry, and cosmetics, poses significant health concerns. Exposure of plants to heavy metals leads to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to their ability to change mitochondrial membrane permeability and restrict the action of ROS clearance enzymes in the cellular antioxidant system. The interaction of ROS with cellular membranes, heavy-metal-induced interactions directly or indirectly with different macromolecules, and signaling pathways leads to the accumulation of environmental pollutants and oxidative stress in exposed organisms. The heavy metal-ROS-cell signaling axis affects various pathological processes such as ATP depletion, excess ROS production, mitochondrial respiratory chain damage, decoupling of oxidative phosphorylation, and mitochondrial death. This review focuses on discussing the toxic effects of different heavy metals on plants, with particular emphasis on oxidative stress, its consequences, and mitigation strategies.

Response mechanism of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under combined stress of Cd and DBDPE: An integrated physiological and metabolomics analysis

DBDPE and Cd are representative contaminants commonly found in electronic waste (e-waste), which tend to be gradually discharged and accumulated in the environment during e-waste dismantling, resulting in frequent outbreaks and detection of these pollutants. The toxicity of both chemicals to vegetables after combined exposure has not been determined. The accumulation and mechanisms of phytotoxicity of the two compounds, alone and in combination, were studied using lettuce. The results showed that the enrichment ability of Cd and DBDPE in root was significantly higher than that in aerial part. Exposure to 1 mg/L Cd + DBDPE reduced the toxicity of Cd to lettuce, while exposure to 5 mg/L Cd + DBDPE increased the toxicity of Cd to lettuce. The absorption of Cd in the underground part of lettuce of 5 mg/L Cd + DBDPE was significantly increased by 108.75 % compared to 5 mg/L Cd. The significant enhancement of antioxidant system activity in lettuce under 5 mg/L Cd + DBDPE exposure, and the root activity and total chlorophyll content were decreased by 19.62 % and 33.13 %, respectively, compared to the control. At the same time, the organelles and cell membranes of lettuce root and leaf were significantly damaged, which was significantly worse than that of single Cd and DBDPE treatment. Combined exposure significantly affected the pathways related to amino acid metabolism, carbon metabolism and ABC transport in lettuce. This study filled the safety gap of DBDPE and Cd combined exposure on vegetables and would provide a theoretical basis for the environmental behavior and toxicological study of DBDPE and Cd.

Heavy metal induced resistance to herbivore of invasive plant: implications from inter- and intraspecific comparisons

Introduction

Heavy metals can affect the content of secondary metabolites in plants, which are one of the important defenses of plants against herbivores. However, studies on the effects of heavy metals on secondary metabolites of invasive plants are scarce. Phytolacca americana is an invasive plant in China, which can hyperaccumulate the heavy metal Mn.

Methods

This study used two Mn treatments (control and treatment group) and four species from Phytolacca (including the native and introduced populations of P. americana, its native and exotic congeners in China) to investigate the impact of heavy metal Mn on the invasive ability of P. americana.

Results

The results show that heavy metal Mn can enhance the inhibitory effect of the introduced populations of P. americana on the growth of herbivore (the weight of herbivore has decreased by 66%), and altered the feeding preferences of herbivore. We also found that heavy metal Mn can significantly increase the content of quantitative resistance in the leaves of the introduced populations of P. americana and is higher than its native populations, native and exotic congeners. In addition, heavy metal Mn caused the quantitative resistance of the exotic congener significantly higher than that of the native congeners.

Discussion

In summary, the heavy metal Mn can increase the content of secondary metabolites in leaves to enhance the interspecific competitive advantage of P. americana and promote its invasion, and also increase the invasion risk of exotic species.

Impact of Some Toxic Metals on Important ABC Transporters in Soybean (Glycine max L.)

In plants, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters facilitate the movement of substrates across membranes using ATP for growth, development, and defense. Soils contaminated with toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) might adversely affect the metabolism of plants and humans. In this study, a phylogenetic relationship among soybeans' (Glycine max) ATP binding cassette (GmABCs) and other plant ABCs was analyzed using sequence information, gene structure, chromosomal distribution, and conserved motif-domain. The ontology of GmABCs indicated their active involvement in trans-membrane transport and ATPase activity. Thirty-day-old soybean plants were exposed to 100 μM CdCl2 and 100 μM HgCl2 for 10 days. Physiological and biochemical traits were altered under stress conditions. Compared to Control, GmABC transporter genes were differentially expressed in response to Cd and Hg. The qRT-PCR data showed upregulation of seven ABC transporter genes in response to Cd stress and three were downregulated. On the other hand, Hg stress upregulated four GmABC genes and downregulated six. It could be concluded that most of the ABCB and ABCG subfamily members were actively involved in heavy metal responses. Real-time expression studies suggest the function of specific ABC transporters in Cd and Hg stress response and are helpful in future research to develop stress-tolerant varieties of soybean.

Ecotoxicological and biochemical effects of a binary mixture of pesticides on the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii in a scenario of global warming

Under the current scenario of global warming, it is ecologically relevant to understand how increased temperature influences the combined toxicity of pesticides to aquatic species. Hence, this work aims to: a) determine the temperature effect (15 °C, 20 °C and 25 °C) on the toxicity of two pesticides (oxyfluorfen and Copper (Cu)), on the growth of Thalassiosira weissflogii; b) assess whether temperature affects the type of toxicity interaction between these chemicals; and c) assess the temperature effect on biochemical responses (fatty acids (FA) and sugar profiles) of the pesticides on T. weissflogii. Temperature increased the tolerance of the diatoms to the pesticides with EC₅₀ values between 3.176 and 9.929 μg L^-1 for oxyfluorfen and 42.50-230.75 μg L^-1 for Cu, respectively, at 15 °C and 25 °C. The mixtures toxicity was better described by the IA model, but temperature altered the type of deviation from dose ratio (15 °C and 20 °C) to antagonism (25 °C). Temperature, as well as the pesticide concentrations, affected the FA and sugar profiles. Increased temperature increased saturated FA and decreased unsaturated FA; it also affected the sugar profiles with a pronounced minimum at 20 °C. Results highlight effects on the nutritional value of these diatoms, with potential repercussion on food webs.

Nanobiotechnology in crop stress management: an overview of novel applications

Agricultural crops are subject to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses that adversely affect growth and reduce the yield of crop plantss. Traditional crop stress management approaches are not capable of fulfilling the food demand of the human population which is projected to reach 10 billion by 2050. Nanobiotechnology is the application of nanotechnology in biological fields and has emerged as a sustainable approach to enhancing agricultural productivity by alleviating various plant stresses. This article reviews innovations in nanobiotechnology and its role in promoting plant growth and enhancing plant resistance/tolerance against biotic and abiotic stresses and the underlying mechanisms. Nanoparticles, synthesized through various approaches (physical, chemical and biological), induce plant resistance against these stresses by strengthening the physical barriers, improving plant photosynthesis and activating plant defense mechanisms. The nanoparticles can also upregulate the expression of stress-related genes by increasing anti-stress compounds and activating the expression of defense-related genes. The unique physico-chemical characteristics of nanoparticles enhance biochemical activity and effectiveness to cause diverse impacts on plants. Molecular mechanisms of nanobiotechnology-induced tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses have also been highlighted. Further research is needed on efficient synthesis methods, optimization of nanoparticle dosages, application techniques and integration with other technologies, and a better understanding of their fate in agricultural systems.

Thermally enhanced biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene and benzene co-contaminated soil: Bioavailability and generation of ROS

In this study, a set of comprehensive experiments were conducted to explore the effects of temperature on the biodegradation, bioavailability, and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by thermally enhanced biodegradation (TEB) under benzene and BaP co-contaminated conditions. The biodegradation rates of benzene increased from 57.4% to 88.7% and 84.9%, and the biodegradation efficiency of BaP was enhanced from 15.8% to 34.6% and 28.6%, when the temperature was raised from the ambient temperature of 15 °C to 45 °C and 30 °C, respectively. In addition, the bioavailability analysis results demonstrated that the water- and butanol-extractable BaP increased with elevated temperatures. High enzymatic activities and PAH-RHD_α gene in gram-positive bacteria favored the long-term elevated temperatures (30 and 45 °C) compared to gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, ROS species (O₂^•- and •OH) generation was detected which were scavenged by the increased superoxide dismutase and catalase activities at elevated temperatures. Soil properties (pH, TOC, moisture, total iron, Fe³⁺, and Fe²⁺) were affected by the temperature treatments, revealing that metal-organic-associated reactions occurred during the TEB of benzene-BaP co-contamination. The results concluded that biodegradation of benzene-BaP co-contamination was greatly improved at 45 °C and that microbial activities enhanced the biodegradation under TEB via the increased bioavailability and generation and degradation of ROS.

Integrative Evaluation of the Ecological Hazards by Microplastics and Heavy Metals in Wetland Ecosystem

This study was performed to evaluate the impact of microplastics and heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni) on sediments, water, aquatic plants (Pistia stratiotes, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and Ipomoea carnea), and fish (Labeo rohita) samples collected from five different sites in the Bajwat wetlands in Sialkot, Pakistan. The concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Cr were above the permissible limits devised by WHO in all the ecosystem components (i.e. sediments, water, plants, and fish) at all sites. The maximum amount of microplastic particles (2317 microplastic particles per kg of sediments) was recorded at Site 1. The filaments were the most commonly found type of microplastics. Plants and fish samples also showed considerable concentration of metals. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed anthropogenic sources of elevated concentrations of metal elements which could cause adverse biological effects in the ecosystem.

Cloning, expression, and bioinformatics analysis of heavy metal resistance-related genes fd-I and fd-II from Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

Five heavy metals were introduced into the bacterial heavy metal resistance tests. The results showed that apparent inhibition effects of Cd2+ and Cu2+ on the growth of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans BYSW1 occurred at high concentrations (>0.04 mol l-1). Significant differences (P < 0.001) were both noticed in the expression of two ferredoxin-encoding genes (fd-I and fd-II) related to heavy metal resistance in the presence of Cd2+ and Cu2+ . When exposed to 0.06 mol l-1 Cd2+, the relative expression levels of fd-I and fd-II were about 11 and 13 times as much as those of the control, respectively. Similarly, exposure to 0.04 mol l-1 Cu2+ caused approximate 8 and 4 times higher than those of the control, respectively. These two genes were cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli, and the structures, functions of two corresponding target proteins, i.e. Ferredoxin-I (Fd-I) and Ferredoxin-II (Fd-II), were predicted. The recombinant cells inserted by fd-I or fd-II were more resistant to Cd2+ and Cu2+ compared with wild-type cells. This study was the first investigation regarding the contribution of fd-I and fd-II to enhancing heavy metal resistance of this bioleaching bacterium, and laid a foundation for further elucidation of heavy metal resistance mechanisms caused by Fd.

Abiotic stress tolerance in plants: a fascinating action of defense mechanisms

Climate fluctuation mediated abiotic stress consequences loss in crop yields. These stresses have a negative impact on plant growth and development by causing physiological and molecular changes. In this review, we have attempted to outline recent studies (5 years) associated with abiotic stress resistance in plants. We investigated the various factors that contribute to coping with abiotic challenges, such as transcription factors (TFs), microRNAs (miRNAs), epigenetic changes, chemical priming, transgenic breeding, autophagy, and non-coding RNAs. Stress responsive genes are regulated mostly by TFs, and these can be used to enhance stress resistance in plants. Plants express some miRNA during stress imposition that act on stress-related target genes to help them survive. Epigenetic alterations govern gene expression and facilitate stress tolerance. Chemical priming enhances growth in plants by modulating physiological parameters. Transgenic breeding enables identification of genes involved in precise plant responses during stressful situations. In addition to protein coding genes, non-coding RNAs also influence the growth of the plant by causing alterations at gene expression levels. For achieving sustainable agriculture for a rising world population, it is crucial to develop abiotic-resistant crops with anticipated agronomical traits. To achieve this objective, understanding the diverse mechanisms by which plants protect themselves against abiotic stresses is imperative. This review emphasizes on recent progress and future prospects for abiotic stress tolerance and productivity in plants.

Bioinspired Cobalt Oxide Nanoball Synthesis, Characterization, and Their Potential as Metal Stress Absorbants

Massive accumulation of heavy metals in agricultural land as a result of enhanced levels of toxicity in the soil is an emerging global concern. Among various metals, zinc contamination has severe effects on plant and human health through the food chain. To remove such toxicity, a nanotechnological neutralizer, cobalt oxide nanoballs (Co₃O₄ Nbs) were synthesized by using the extract of Cordia myxa. The Co₃O₄ Nbs were well characterized via UV-vis spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Green-synthesized Co₃O₄ Nbs were exposed over Acacia jacquemontii and Acacia nilotica at different concentrations (25, 50, 75, and 100 ppm). Highly significant results were observed for plant growth by the application of Co₃O₄ Nbs at 100 ppm, thereby increasing the root length (35%), shoot length (48%), fresh weight (44%), and dry weight (40%) of the Acacia species with respect to the control. Furthermore, physiological parameters including chlorophyll contents, relative water contents, and osmolyte contents like proline and sugar showed a prominent increase. The antioxidant activity and atomic absorption supported and justified the positive response to using Co₃O₄ Nbs that mitigated the heavy-metal zinc stress by improving the plant growth. Hence, the biocompatible Co₃O₄ Nbs counteract the zinc toxicity for governing and maintaining plant growth. Such nanotechnological tools can therefore step up the cropping system and overcome toxicity to meet the productivity demand along with the development of agricultural management strategies.

Nitric oxide overcomes copper and copper oxide nanoparticle-induced toxicity in Sorghum vulgare seedlings through regulation of ROS and proline metabolism

This study aimed to investigate the phytotoxic effect of copper (Cu) and copper nanoparticles (CuONPs) and ameliorative potential of nitric oxide (NO) against these toxic materials in Sorghum vulgare Pers. seedlings. Data suggested that exposure of Cu and CuONPs significantly reduced growth, chlorophyll, carotenoids and protein in root and shoot, which coincided with increased Cu accumulation. However, addition of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a donor of NO) lowered Cu and CuONPs mediated toxicity through restricting Cu accumulation and improving photosynthetic pigments and total soluble protein contents. Data further suggested that exposure of Cu and CuONPs significantly increased hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), superoxide radicals (O2 •- ), and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents. Enhanced level of oxidative stress severely inhibited the enzymatic activities of glutathione reductase (GR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) but enhanced superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity. However, addition of SNP positively regulated antioxidants enzymes activity, particularly the enzymes involved in the ascorbate-glutathione cycle to overcome Cu- and CuONPs-induced stress in Sorghum seedlings. Further, Cu and CuONPs enhanced accumulation of free proline through inducing Δ1 -pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) activity while lowering the proline dehydrogenase (PDH) activity. However, addition of SNP reversed these responses. Therefore, overall results revealed that SNP has enough potential of reducing the toxicity of Cu and CuONPs in Sorghum seedlings through regulation of proline metabolism and activity of enzymes of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle. These findings can be employed in developing new resistant varieties of Sorghum having enhanced tolerance against Cu or CuONP stress and improved productivity.

Molecular mechanisms underlying the toxicity and detoxification of trace metals and metalloids in plants

Plants take up a wide range of trace metals/metalloids (hereinafter referred to as trace metals) from the soil, some of which are essential but become toxic at high concentrations (e.g., Cu, Zn, Ni, Co), while others are non-essential and toxic even at relatively low concentrations (e.g., As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Hg). Soil contamination of trace metals is an increasing problem worldwide due to intensifying human activities. Trace metal contamination can cause toxicity and growth inhibition in plants, as well as accumulation in the edible parts to levels that threatens food safety and human health. Understanding the mechanisms of trace metal toxicity and how plants respond to trace metal stress is important for improving plant growth and food safety in contaminated soils. The accumulation of excess trace metals in plants can cause oxidative stress, genotoxicity, programmed cell death, and disturbance in multiple physiological processes. Plants have evolved various strategies to detoxify trace metals through cell-wall binding, complexation, vacuolar sequestration, efflux, and translocation. Multiple signal transduction pathways and regulatory responses are involved in plants challenged with trace metal stresses. In this review, we discuss the recent progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in trace metal toxicity, detoxification, and regulation, as well as strategies to enhance plant resistance to trace metal stresses and reduce toxic metal accumulation in food crops.

Carbon dot based sensing platform for real-time imaging Cu2+ distribution in plants and environment

Divalent copper is a double-edged sword for plants, excess or shortage of copper ions will cause adverse reactions in plants. Currently, Cu2+ sensor for plants is still underdeveloped and new technology is urgently required for realizing one-step and real-time detection of Cu2+ in plants. Herein, a home-made and low-cost sensing platform is constructed by using carbon dots (CDs) as the optical probe, electronic devices for image acquisition, and a built-in algorithm program for image processing, which allows the dynamic monitoring of Cu2+ distribution in different plant species with high spatial and temporal resolution. We found that the detection limit of R-CDs for Cu2+ in water sample was 0.375 nM, and 11.7 mg/kg or even less Cu2+ in plants can be visually observed and accurately detected by the sensing platform. Moreover, this sensing platform has also been employed for reporting the spatial distribution of Cu2+ in the external environment of plants, demonstrating its applicability for monitoring Cu2+ both in living plants and the surrounding environment. This study provides a smart sensing platform for precise detection in plant internal and external environments, offering a promising strategy for precision agriculture in real-time and remote-control manners.

Effect of Heavy Metal Stress on Phenolic Compounds Accumulation in Winter Wheat Plants

Heavy metal stress can lead to many adverse effects that inhibit cellular processes at various levels of metabolism, causing a decrease in plant productivity. In response to environmental stressors, phenolic compounds fulfill significant molecular and biochemical functions in plants. Increasing the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds in plants subjected to heavy metal stress helps protect plants from oxidative stress. A pot experiment was carried out to determine the effect of the accumulation of copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) salts at concentrations of 200, 500, and 1000 ppm on seed germination, the activity of enzymes in the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase pathway (PAL) and tyrosine ammonia-lyase (TAL), along with the total phenol and flavonoid contents in seedlings of hybrid Triticum aestivum L. (winter wheat) cultivars. The accumulation of heavy metals, especially Cu, had a negative impact on the seed germination process. The cultivar "Hyacinth" reacted most strongly to heavy metal stress, which was confirmed by obtaining the lowest values of the germination parameters. Heavy metal stress caused an increase in the activity of PAL and TAL enzymes and an increase in the accumulation of phenolic compounds. Under the influence of Cu, the highest activity was shown in cv. "Hyvento" (especially at 200 ppm) and, due to the accumulation of Pb, in cv. "Hyacinth" (1000 ppm) and cv. "Hyking" (200 ppm). The cultivar "Hyking" had the highest content of phenolic compounds, which did not increase with the application of higher concentrations of metals. In other cultivars, the highest content of total phenols and flavonoids was usually observed at the lowest concentration (200 ppm) of the tested heavy metals, Cu and Pb.

Nitric Oxide- and Sulfur-Mediated Reversal of Cadmium-Inhibited Photosynthetic Performance Involves Hydrogen Sulfide and Regulation of Nitrogen, Sulfur, and Antioxidant Metabolism in Mustard

This study aimed to test the role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the responses regarding the nitric oxide- (NO) and sulfur (S)-mediated improvement in photosynthesis and growth under cadmium (Cd) stress in mustard (Brassica juncea L. cv. Giriraj), and integrate the mechanisms of S, nitrogen (N), and antioxidant metabolism. The plants grown with Cd (200 mg Cd kg−1 soil) exhibited reduced assimilation of S and N and diminished photosynthetic performance, which was associated with higher Cd accumulation-induced excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The application of 100 μM of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a NO donor) together with a more prominent concentration of S resulted in increased photosynthetic S- and N-use efficiency, production of non-protein thiols and phytochelatins, efficiency of enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase), non-enzymatic antioxidants (ascorbate and glutathione) limiting Cd accumulation and, thus, reduced oxidative stress (superoxide radical, hydrogen peroxide, and thiobarbituric acid reactive species content). The benefit of NO together with S was manifested through a modulation in H2S production. The use of 100 μM of hypotaurine (HT; H2S scavenger) or 100 μM of cPTIO (2-4-carboxyphenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) in plants treated with NO plus S reversed the action of NO plus S, with a higher reduction in photosynthesis and growth with the use of HT, suggesting that H2S plays a significant role in the NO- and S-mediated alleviation of Cd stress. The interplay of NO and ES with H2S may be used in augmenting the photosynthesis and growth of Cd-grown mustard plants.

Effect of foliar and root exposure to polymethyl methacrylate microplastics on biochemistry, ultrastructure, and arsenic accumulation in Brassica campestris L

Despite the serious risk of microplastic pollution in the roots and leaves of crops, the phytotoxicity of microplastics (introduced via different exposure routes) in leafy vegetables remain insufficiently understood. Here, the effects of the root and foliar exposure of polymethyl methacrylate microplastic (PMMAMPs) on phytotoxicity, As accumulation, and subcellular distribution were investigated in rapeseed (Brassica campestris L). The relative chlorophyll content under PMMAMPs treatment decreased with time, and the 0.05 g L^-1 root exposure decreased it significantly (by 9.97-20.48%, P < 0.05). In addition, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities in rapeseed were more sensitive to PMMAMPs introduced through root exposure than through foliar exposure. There was dose-dependent ultrastructural damage, and root exposure had a greater impact than foliar exposure on root tip cells and chloroplasts. PMMAMPs entered the shoots and roots of rapeseed through root exposure. Under foliar exposure, PMMAMPs promoted As accumulation in rapeseed by up to 75.6% in shoots and 68.2% in roots compared to that under control (CK). As content in cell wall under PMMAMP treatments was 3.6-5.3 times higher than that of CK, as indicated by subcellular component results. In general, root exposure to PMMAMPs resulted in a stronger physiological impact and foliar exposure led to increased As accumulation in rapeseed.

A novel phytoremediation technology for polluted cadmium soil: Salix integra treated with spermidine and activated carbon

A variety of plants have been used as phytoremediation materials to remove Cd from polluted soil. However, the disadvantages of using plants for decontamination include low biomass, low uptake, and inefficiency. We conducted experiments to determine the effects of spermidine and activated carbon treatments of Salix integra on Cd removal. The results showed that exogenous spermidine and activated carbon increased plant growth and root development compared with the CK. The increased dry mass (39.65-92.95%) with the combined spermidine and activated carbon treatments was higher than that with either single treatment (14.79-62.80%). The root length, surface area, root volume, and root diameter with the combined spermidine and activated carbon treatments (53.51-189.35%, 113.08-207.62%, 111.71-499.27%, and 32.51-106.62%, respectively) were higher than those of the lone application treatments (19.35-132.23%, 52.33-111.57%, 35.08-297.07%, and 24.22-81.38%, respectively). In addition, spermidine and activated carbon application reduced the toxicity of Cd to S. integra by improving the antioxidant capacity, thereby increasing the accumulation of Cd. The application of spermidine and activated carbon also changed the distribution of Cd in each part of S. integra. There was increased accumulation of Cd in the shoots and better absorption by the S. integra shoots, thereby improving their Cd remediation efficiency. The combined 0.8 mM spermidine and 0.5 g kg^-1 activated carbon were most effective on removing Cd from the soil. The Cd removal efficiency was 78.11-120.86% higher than that of the CK. Our results may provide foundational information for understanding the mechanisms for the sustainable remediation of Cd-contaminated soil using a combination of spermidine and activated carbon.

Comparison of two willow genotypes reveals potential roles of iron-regulated transporter 9 and heavy-metal ATPase 1 in cadmium accumulation and resistance in Salix suchowensis

Willows (Salix spp.) are promising extractors of cadmium (Cd), with fast growth, high biomass production, and high Cd accumulation capacity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying Cd uptake and detoxification are currently poorly understood. Analysis of the Cd uptake among 30 willow genotypes in hydroponic systems showed that the S. suchowensis and S. integra hybrids, Jw8-26 and Jw9-6, exhibited distinct Cd accumulation and resistance characteristics. Jw8-26 was a high Cd-accumulating and tolerant willow, while Jw9-6 was a low Cd-accumulating and relatively Cd-intolerant willow. Therefore, these two genotypes were ideal specimens for determining the molecular mechanisms of Cd uptake and detoxification. To identify relevant genes in Cd handling, the parent S. suchowensis was treated with Cd and RNA-seq analysis was performed. SsIRT, SsHMA, and SsGST, in addition to the transcription factors SsERF, SsMYB, and SsZAT were identified as being associated with Cd uptake and resistance. Because membrane-localised heavy metal transporters mediate Cd transfer to plant tissues, a total of 17 SsIRT and 12 SsHMA family members in S. suchowensis were identified. Subsequently, a thorough bioinformatics analysis of the SsIRT and SsHMA families was conducted, and their transcript levels were analysed in the roots of the two hybrids. The transcript levels of SsIRT9 in roots were positively correlated with the observed differences in Cd accumulation in Jw8-26 versus Jw9-6. Jw8-26 displayed higher SsIRT9 expression levels and higher Cd accumulation than Jw9-6; therefore, SsIRT9 may be involved in Cd uptake. Gene expression analysis also revealed that SsHMA1 was a candidate gene associated with Cd resistance. These results lay the foundation for understanding the molecular mechanism of Cd transfer and detoxification in willows, and provide guidance for the screening and breeding of high Cd-accumulating and tolerant willow genotypes via genetic engineering.

Uptake, speciation and detoxification of antimonate and antimonite in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris Cretica L

Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are chemical analogs, but their behaviors in plants are different. To investigate the Sb uptake, translocation and speciation in As-hyperaccumulator P. cretica, a hydroponic experiment was conducted. In this study, P. cretica was exposed to 0.2-strength Hoagland nutrient solution, which contained 0.5 or 5 mg/L antimonite (SbIII) or antimonate (SbV). After 14 d exposure, P. cretica took up 1.4-2.8 times more SbIII than SbV. Since P. cretica was unable to translocate Sb, its roots accumulated >97% Sb with the highest at 7965 mg/kg. In both SbIII and SbV treatments, SbIII was the predominant species in P. cretica, with 90-100% and 46-100% SbIII in the roots. As the first barrier against Sb to enter plant cells, more Sb was accumulated in cell wall than cytosol or organelles. The results suggest that P. cretica may detoxify Sb by reducing SbV to SbIII and immobilizing it in root cell walls. Besides, the presence of SbIII significantly reduced the concentrations of dissolved organic C including organic acids in P. cretica root exudates. Further, increasing Sb levels promoted P accumulation in the plant, especially in the fronds, which may help P. cretica growth. The information from this study shed light on metabolic transformation of Sb in As-hyperaccumulators P. cretica, which helps to better understand Sb uptake and detoxification by plants.

The positive effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation and/or additional aeration on the purification efficiency of combined heavy metals in vertical flow constructed wetlands

Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and additional aeration (AA), as two approaches to improve the functioning of treatment wetlands, can further promote the capacity of wetlands to purify pollutants. The extent to which, and mechanisms by which, AMF and AA purify wetlands polluted by combined heavy metals (HMs) are not well understood. In this study, the effects and mechanisms of AMF and/or AA on combined HMs removal in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) with the Phragmites australis (reeds) were investigated at different HMs concentrations. The results showed that (1) AA improved the AMF colonization in VFCWs and AMF accumulated the combined HMs in their structures; (2) AMF inoculation and/or AA significantly promoted the reeds growth and antioxidant enzymes activities, thereby alleviating oxidative stress; (3) AMF inoculation and AA significantly enhanced the removal rates of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd under the stress of high combined HMs concentrations comparing to the control check (CK) treatment (autoclaved AMF inoculation and no aeration), which increased by 22.72%, 30.31%, 12.64%, and 50.22%, respectively; (4) AMF inoculation and/or AA significantly promoted the combined HMs accumulation in plant roots and substrates and altered the distribution of HMs at the subcellular level. We therefore conclude that AMF inoculation and/or AA in VFCWs improves the purification of combined HM-polluted water, and the VFCWs-reeds-AMF/AA associations exhibit great potential for application in remediation of combined HM-polluted wastewater.

Transcription factor ANAC004 enhances Cd tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana by regulating cell wall fixation, translocation and vacuolar detoxification of Cd, ABA accumulation and antioxidant capacity

Cadmium (Cd) is toxic to plants, which have evolved multiple strategies to cope with Cd stress. In this study, we identified a nucleus-localized NAC-type transcription factor, ANAC004, which is induced by Cd and involved in regulating Cd resistance in Arabidopsis. First, anac004 mutants exhibited Cd sensitive phenotype and accumulated more Cd (12-23% higher than wild type in roots and shoots); plants overexpressing ANAC004 showed the opposite phenotype and with lower Cd accumulation. Second, ANAC004 enhanced Cd fixation in cell wall hemicellulose, thus reducing Cd²⁺ influx into root cells. Third, ANAC004 was involved in the process of vacuolar Cd compartmentalization by regulating the genes associated with Cd detoxification (PCS1/2, NAS4, ABCC1/2/3, MTP1/3, IREG2 and NRAMP3/4). Fourth, ANAC004 reduced root-to-shoot Cd translocation through down-regulated Cd translocation-related genes (HMA2 and HMA4). Finally, the expression of genes related to ABA synthesis (AAO3, MCSU, and NCED3) and the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD and CAT) were all reduced in anac004 mutants, leading to reduced levels of endogenous ABA and increased accumulation of reactive oxygen species (O₂^.- and H₂O₂) and MDA, which ultimately weakened resistance to Cd. Our results suggest that ANAC004 decreases Cd accumulation in Arabidopsis through enhancing cell wall Cd immobilization, increasing vacuolar Cd detoxification, and inhibiting Cd translocation, thus improving Cd resistance, processes that might be mediated by ABA signaling and antioxidant defense systems.

Testicular Toxicity of Chloroxylenol in Rats: Biochemical, Pathological and Flow Cytometric Study

Background

Chloroxylenol (para-chloro-meta-xylenol, PCMX) is claimed to be highly harmful both to humans and the environment. Toxic effects of PCMX on testicular functions are scarcely discussed in the literature.

Aim of Study

To study testicular toxic effects of PCMX on male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Materials and Methods

Forty animals were randomly distributed into three groups: negative control (G I), vehicle group (G II) and PCMX group (G III). PCMX group was subdivided into three subgroups: GIIIa: received PCMX 100 mg/kg, GIIIb: received PCMX 200 mg/kg and G IIIc: received PCMX 500 mg/kg. Hormonal assay included assessment of serum testosterone and estradiol levels. Histopathological examination of testicular tissue, analysis of cellular viability, necrosis and apoptosis in testicular tissue by flow cytometry, analysis of cellular DNA content and phases of cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry were also performed.

Results

Rats in the groups exposed to PCMX (G IIIa, G IIIb and G IIIc) had significantly lower estradiol and testosterone levels in comparison to control groups (G I and GII). Histopathological examination of testicular tissue of PCMX-exposed rats showed irregular crossly sectioned seminiferous tubules with their lumina containing scanty spermatids and spermatozoa. G IIIc animals showed eosinophilic proteinaceous material and vacuolated and necrotic interstitial cells of Leydig. Rats in PCMX-exposed groups (G IIIa, G IIIb and G IIIc) showed significantly lower testicular tissue viability in comparison to control groups (G I and G II). Rats in PCMX-exposed groups (G IIIa, G IIIb and G IIIc) showed significantly lower percentage of cells in the G0/G1 phase in comparison to control groups (G I and G II).

Conclusion

Rats exposed to PCMX had significant reduction in testosterone and estradiol levels with marked histopathological alterations affecting testicular tissues. These effects are dose-dependent.

The Role of Nitric Oxide Signaling in Plant Responses to Cadmium Stress

Nitric oxide (NO) is a widely distributed gaseous signaling molecule in plants that can be synthesized through enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways and plays an important role in plant growth and development, signal transduction, and response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal pollutant widely found in the environment, which not only inhibits plant growth but also enters humans through the food chain and endangers human health. To reduce or avoid the adverse effects of Cd stress, plants have evolved a range of coping mechanisms. Many studies have shown that NO is also involved in the plant response to Cd stress and plays an important role in regulating the resistance of plants to Cd stress. However, until now, the mechanisms by which Cd stress regulates the level of endogenous NO accumulation in plant cells remained unclear, and the role of exogenous NO in plant responses to Cd stress is controversial. This review describes the pathways of NO production in plants, the changes in endogenous NO levels in plants under Cd stress, and the effects of exogenous NO on regulating plant resistance to Cd stress.
