Occurrence, removal, and risk assessment of antibiotics in 12 wastewater treatment plants from Dalian, China

Occurrence and risks of PPCPs of a typical mountainous region: Implications for sustainable urban water systems

Urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) play vital roles in the urban water cycle, ensuring access to safe drinking water and maintaining aquatic ecosystems. This study comprehensively assessed the occurrence and risks of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in urban WWTPs and DWTPs. Our findings revealed widespread PPCPs presence, with concentrations ranging from <1 ng/L to several thousand ng/L. Significant regional disparities in occurrence and composition were observed linked to population types and economic structures. Furthermore, strong correlations were observed between DWTPs and WWTPs indicating consistent transport and transformation patterns of PPCPs within the urban water cycle. Approximately two-thirds of PPCPs were degraded post-WWTP treatment, with about one-tenth persisting in drinking water following surface water dilution and purification processes. Thus, we suggested that controlling the total concentration of the five priority PPCPs in the effluent from the WWTP to <1100 ng/L have potential to reduce the environmental and health risk of PPCPs. Additionally, this research identified influential water quality parameters, such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature, through redundancy analysis. This research underscores the importance of establishing emission standards to mitigate PPCP-related risks and supports sustainable urban water system advancement.

Optimizing entropy weight model to accurately predict variation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the estuaries and coasts of the South China

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have raised increasing concern worldwide due to their continuous release and potential hazards to the ecosystem and human health. This study optimized the entropy weight model (EW-WRSR) that combines entropy weight with multi-criteria decision analysis to investigate pollution patterns of PPCPs in the coasts and estuaries. The results revealed that occurrences of PPCPs from the 1940s to the present were consistent with using PPCPs, different types of human activities, and local urban development. This helped better understand the history of PPCP contamination and evaluate the uncertainty of EW-WRSR. The model predicted hotspots of PPCPs that were consistent with the actual situation, indicating that PPCPs mainly enter the nearshore ecosystem by the form of sewage discharge and residual aquaculture. This study can provide method that identifying highly contaminated regions on a global scale.

Quantitative assessment, molecular docking and novel metabolic pathways reveal the interaction mechanisms between norfloxacin biodegradation and environmental implications

Norfloxacin (NOR) is widely used in medicine and animal husbandry, but its accumulation in the environment poses a substantial threat to ecological and human health. Traditional physical, chemical, and rudimentary biological methods often fall short in mitigating NOR contamination, necessitating innovative biological approaches. This study proposes an engineered bacterial consortium found in marine sediment as a strategy to enhance NOR degradation through inter-strain co-metabolism of diverse substrates. Strategically supplementing the engineered bacterial consortium with exogenous carbon sources and metal ions boosted the activity of key degradation enzymes like laccase, manganese peroxidase, and dehydrogenase. Iron and amino acids demonstrated synergistic effects, resulting in a remarkable 70.8% reduction in NOR levels. The innovative application of molecular docking elucidated enzyme interactions with NOR, uncovering potential biodegradation mechanisms. Quantitative assessment reinforced the efficiency of NOR degradation within the engineered bacterial consortium. Four metabolic routes are herein proposed: acetylation, defluorination, ring scission, and hydroxylation. Notably, this study discloses distinctive, co-operative metabolic pathways for NOR degradation within the specific microbial community. These findings provide new ways of understanding and investigating the bioremediation potential of NOR contaminants, which may lead to the development of more sustainable and effective environmental management strategies.

Occurrence, fate, and ecological risk of antibiotics in wastewater treatment plants in China: A review

This review offers a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, fate, and ecological risk associated with six major categories of antibiotics found in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. Further exploration includes examining the correlation between antibiotic residual rates in the effluents and process parameters of urban WWTPs across the country. Lastly, a nationwide and urban cluster-specific evaluation of the ecological risk posed by antibiotics in WWTPs is conducted. The findings reveal that the average concentrations of antibiotics in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban WWTPs in China are 786.2 ng/L, 311.2 ng/L, and 186.8 μg/kg, respectively. Among the detected antibiotics, 42% exhibit moderate to high ecological risk in the effluent, with ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, azithromycin, and tetracycline posing moderate to high ecological risks in sludge. The current biological treatment processes in WWTPs demonstrate inefficacy in removing antibiotics. Hence, there is a pressing need to develop and integrate innovative technologies, such as advanced oxidation processes. This review aims to offer a more comprehensive understanding and identify priority antibiotics for control to effectively manage antibiotic pollution within WWTPs at both national and regional levels.

Prevalence of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes, and their associations in municipal wastewater treatment plants along the Yangtze River basin, China

The overuse and misuse of antibiotics have resulted in the pollution of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), posing threats to ecological security and human health. Thus, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to assess the occurrence, removal efficiency, and ecological risk of antibiotics, along with the diversity, abundance, and co-occurrence of ARGs, and their correlations in 13 WWTPs along the Yangtze River Basin. Among 35 target antibiotics, 23 antibiotics within 6 categories were detected in all the samples. Amoxicillin (AMO), ofloxacin (OFL), and pefloxacin (PEF) were predominant in influents, while AMO exhibited dominance with the highest concentration of 1409 ng/L in effluents. Although antibiotic removal performance varied among different WWTPs, a significant decrease in each antibiotic category and overall antibiotics was observed in effluents compared with that in influents (p < 0.05). Remarkably, ecological risk assessment revealed high risks associated with AMO and ciprofloxacin (CIP) and medium risks linked to several antibiotics, notably including OFL, roxithromycin (ROX), clarithromycin (CLA), and tetracycline (TC). Furthermore, 96 ARG subtypes within 12 resistance types were detected in this study, and the total absolute abundance and diversity of ARGs were significantly decreased from influents to effluents (p < 0.05). Enrichment of 38 ARGs (e.g., blaNDM, ermA, vatA, mexA, and dfrA25) in effluents indicated potential health risks. Various mobile genetic elements (MGEs), exhibited significant correlations with a majority of ARGs in both influents and effluents, such as intⅠ1, tnpA1, tnpA5, and tp614, underscoring the important role of MGEs in contributing to the ARG dissemination. Many antibiotics displayed lower correlations with corresponding ARGs, but exhibited higher correlations with other ARGs, suggesting complex selective pressures influencing ARG propagation. Overall, the incomplete elimination of antibiotics and ARGs in WWTPs is likely to pose adverse impacts on aquatic ecosystems in the Yangtze River Basin.

Optimization and validation of multiresidual extraction methods for pharmaceuticals in Soil, Lettuce, and Earthworms

The presence of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals (PhACs) in the environment poses potential risks. To comprehensively assess these risks, robust multiresidual analytical methods are essential for determining a broad spectrum of PhAC classes in various environmental compartments (soil, plants, and soil organisms). This study optimized extraction methods for analyzing over 40 PhACs from various matrices, including soil, lettuce, and earthworms. A four-step ultrasonic extraction method with varying extraction conditions and subsequent solid phase extraction was developed for soil samples. QuEChERS methods were optimized for extracting PhACs from lettuce and earthworm samples, addressing a literature gap in these less-studied matrices. The quantification of PhACs in soil, lettuce, and earthworm extracts was performed using a single LC-MS/MS method. Following thorough method validation, earthworms and lettuce were exposed to a mixture of 27 pharmaceuticals in a soil environment. The method validation results demonstrated the robustness of these methods for a broad spectrum of PhACs. Specifically, 29 out of 42 PhACs were extracted with an average efficiency > 50% and RSD < 30% from the soil; 40 out of 42 PhACs exhibited average efficiency > 50% and %RSD < 30% from the earthworms, while 39 out of 42 PhACs showed average efficiency > 50% and RSD < 30% from the lettuce. Exposure experiments confirmed the viability of these methods for quantifying a diverse range of PhACs in different environmental compartments. This study presents three thoroughly validated methods for determining more than 40 PhACs in diverse matrices, enabling a comprehensive assessment of PhAC dissemination in the environment.

Emerging Contaminants in the Effluent of Wastewater Should Be Regulated: Which and to What Extent?

Effluent discharged from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a major source of emerging contaminants (ECs) requiring effective regulation. To this end, we collected discharge datasets of pharmaceuticals (PHACs) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), representing two primary categories of ECs, from Chinese WWTP effluent from 2012 to 2022 to establish an exposure database. Moreover, high-risk ECs' long-term water quality criteria (LWQC) were derived using the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method. A total of 140 ECs (124 PHACs and 16 EDCs) were identified, with concentrations ranging from N.D. (not detected) to 706 μg/L. Most data were concentrated in coastal regions and Gansu, with high ecological risk observed in Gansu, Hebei, Shandong, Guangdong, and Hong Kong. Using the assessment factor (AF) method, 18 high-risk ECs requiring regulation were identified. However, only three of them, namely carbamazepine, ibuprofen, and bisphenol-A, met the derivation requirements of the SSD method. The LWQC for these three ECs were determined as 96.4, 1010, and 288 ng/L, respectively. Exposure data for carbamazepine and bisphenol-A surpassed their derived LWQC, indicating a need for heightened attention to these contaminants. This study elucidates the occurrence and risks of ECs in Chinese WWTPs and provides theoretical and data foundations for EC management in urban sewage facilities.

Predicting environmental risks of pharmaceutical residues by wastewater surveillance: An analysis based on pharmaceutical sales and their excretion data

Pharmaceutical residues are increasingly becoming a significant source of environmental water pollution and ecological risk. This study, leveraging official national pharmaceutical sales statistics, predicts the environmental concentrations of 33 typical pharmaceuticals in the Tianjin area. The results show that 52 % of the drugs have a PEC/MEC (Predicted Environmental Concentration/Measured Environmental Concentration) ratio within the acceptable range of 0.5-2, including atenolol (1.21), carbamazepine (1.22), and sulfamethoxazole (0.91). Among the selected drugs, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and acetaminophen had the highest predicted concentrations. The EPI (Estimation Programs Interface) biodegradation model, a tool from the US Environmental Protection Agency, is used to predict the removal efficiency of compounds in wastewater treatment plants. The results indicate that the EPI predictions are acceptable for macrolide antibiotics and β-blockers, with removal rates of roxithromycin, spiramycin, acetaminophen, and carbamazepine being 14.1 %, 61.2 %, 75.1 %, and 44.5 %, respectively. However, the model proved to be less effective for fluoroquinolone antibiotics. The ECOSAR (Ecological Structure-Activity Relationships) model was used to supplement the assessment of the potential impacts of drugs on aquatic ecosystems, further refining the analysis of pharmaceutical environmental risks. By combining the concentration and detection frequency of pharmaceutical wastewater, this study identified 9 drugs with significant toxicological risks and marked another 24 drugs as substances of potential concern. Additionally, this study provides data support for addressing pharmaceutical residues of priority concern in subsequent research.

Microalgae: A potential bioagent for treatment of emerging contaminants from domestic wastewater

Water crisis around the world leads to a growing interest in emerging contaminants (ECs) that can affect human health and the environment. Research showed that thousands of compounds from domestic consumers, such as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), personal care products (PCPs), and pharmaceuticals active compounds (PhAcs), could be found in wastewater in concentration mostly from ng L-1 to μg L-1. However, generally, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not designed to remove these ECs from wastewater to their discharge levels. Scientists are looking for economically feasible biotreatment options enabling the complete removal of ECs before discharge. Microalgae cultivation in domestic wastewater is likely a feasible approach for removing emerging contaminants and simultaneously removing any residual organic nutrients. Microalgal growth rate and contaminants removal efficiency could be affected by various factors, including light intensity, CO2 addition, presence of different nutrients, etc., and these parameters could greatly help make microalgae treatment more efficient. Furthermore, the algal biomass harvests could be repurposed to produce various bulk chemicals such as sustainable aviation fuel, biofuel, bioplastic, and biochar; this could significantly enhance the economic viability. Therefore, this review summarizes the microalgae-based bioprocess and their mechanisms for removing different ECs from different wastewaters and highlights the different strategies to improve the ECs removal efficiency. Furthermore, this review shows the role of different ECs in biomass profile and the relevance of using ECs-treated microalgae biomass to produce green products, as well as highlights the challenges and future research recommendations.

Cyclodextrin-based nanosponges as promising carriers for active pharmaceutical ingredient

Effective drug distribution at the intended or particular location is a critical issue that researchers are now dealing. Nanosponges have significantly increased in importance in medication delivery using nanotechnology in recent years. An important step toward solving these problems has been the development of nanosponges. Recently created and proposed for use in drug delivery, nanosponge is a unique type of hyper-crosslinked polymer-based colloidal structures made up of solid nanoparticles with colloidal carriers. Nanosponges are solid porous particles that may hold pharmaceuticals and other actives in their nanocavities. They can be made into dosage forms for oral, parenteral, topical, or inhalation use. The targeted distribution of drugs in a regulated manner is greatly aided by nanosponge. The utilization of nanosponges, their benefits, their production processes, the polymers they are made of, and their characterization have all been covered in this review article.

Occurrence, removal, emission and environment risk of 32 antibiotics and metabolites in wastewater treatment plants in Wuhu, China

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered important sources of antibiotics and metabolites in aquatic environments and pose a serious threat to the safety of aquatic organisms. In this study, we investigated the seasonal occurrence, removal, emission, and environmental risk assessment (ERA) of 32 antibiotics and metabolites at four WWTPs located in Wuhu, China. The main findings of this study are as follows: Ofloxacin concentrations dominated all WWTPs, and large quantities of sulfachinoxalin were only detected in WWTP 2 treating mixed sewage. The average apparent removal of individual parent antibiotics or metabolites ranged from -94.7 to 100 %. There was a noticeable seasonal emission pattern (independent t-test, t = 9.89, p < 0.001), with lower emissions observed during summer. WWTPs discharged 85.2 ± 43.8 g of antibiotics and metabolites each day. Approximately 87 % of emissions were discharged into the mainstream of the Yangtze River, while the remainder were discharged into its tributary, the Zhanghe River. The total emissions of 21 parent antibiotics were approximately 18 % of the prescription data, indicating that a considerable and alarming amount of prototype drugs entered the receiving water body. Based on the risk quotient (RQ) of the ERA, the Zhanghe River has a moderate risk of ofloxacin (RQ = 0.111-0.583), a low or insignificant risk of sulfamethoxazole (RQ = 0.003-0.048), and an insignificant risk of other antibiotics or metabolites. However, the risk of antibiotics or metabolites in the mainstream of Yangtze River is insignificant. This study could help understand the seasonal emission patterns of antibiotics and metabolites, as well as more antibiotics sensitive of environmental risks in tributary than that in mainstream.

The erythromycin sorption removal at environmentally relevant concentration based on molecular imprinted polymer: Performance and mechanism

The antibiotic pollution emerged in different environments has raised a great concern. Adsorption is an effective method to solve the problem. However, conventional adsorbents are not always efficient for antibiotic removal with interferences. Therefore, in this study, molecularly imprinted polymer (EMIP) with selective adsorption ability was prepared to remove a typical antibiotic-erythromycin (ERY) at environmentally relevant concentration. The specific surface area of EMIP was 265.62 m2/g with large pore volume, small pore size and hydrophobic surface. The adsorption capacity of EMIP was increased from 211.08 to 4015.51 μg/g when the concentration of ERY was increased from 5.00 to 100.00 μg/L. The isothermal adsorption process was fitted well with the Langmuir model. The adsorption kinetic could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model. With co-existing of interferences, the imprinting factor for ERY was 2.57, which demonstrated EMIP had good adsorption selectivity. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption experiments, the adsorption capacity of EMIP was still over 80%. The results of molecular dynamic simulation showed the adsorption energy between ERY and EMIP was high, which was favorable for ERY adsorption removal. Hopefully, the results of this study could provide new insights for trace antibiotic removal by molecular imprinting polymers in different aqueous environments.

Risk control of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) during sewage sludge treatment and disposal: A review

Sewage sludge is an important reservoir of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and the reclamation of sewage sludge potentially threats human health and environmental safety. Sludge treatment and disposal are expected to control these risks, and this review summarizes the fate and controlling efficiency of antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB in sludge involved in different processes, i.e., disintegration, anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, drying, pyrolysis, constructed wetland, and land application. Additionally, the analysis and characterization methods of antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB in complicate sludge are reviewed, and the quantitative risk assessment approaches involved in land application are comprehensively discussed. This review benefits process optimization of sludge treatment and disposal, with regard to environmental risks control of antibiotics, ARGs, and ARB in sludge. Furthermore, current research limitations and gaps, e.g., the antibiotic resistance risk assessment in sludge-amended soil, are proposed to advance the future studies.

A bibliometric analysis of green technologies applied to water and wastewater treatment

Freshwater scarcity, a problem that has arisen particularly as a result of the progressive environmental damage caused by human consumption patterns, is strongly associated with a loss of living quality and a drop in global socioeconomic development. Wastewater treatment is one of the measures being taken to mitigate the current situation. However, the majority of existing treatments employ chemicals that have harmful environmental consequences and low effectiveness and are prohibitively expensive in most countries. Therefore, to increase water supplies, more advanced and cost-effective water treatment technologies are required to be developed for desalination and water reuse purposes. Green technologies have been highlighted as a long-term strategy for conserving natural resources, reducing negative environmental repercussions, and boosting social and economic growth. Thus, a bibliometric technique was applied in this study to identifying prominent green technologies utilised in water and wastewater treatment by analysing scientific publications considering authors, keywords, and countries. To do this, the VOSviewer software and Bibliometrix R Package software were employed. The results of this study revealed that constructed wetlands and photocatalysis are two technologies that have been considered as green technologies applicable to the improvement of water and wastewater treatment processes in most scientific articles.

A comprehensive review on quinolone contamination in environments: current research progress

Quinolone (QN) antibiotics are a kind of broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used in the treatment of human and animal diseases. They have the characteristics of strong antibacterial activity, stable metabolism, low production cost, and no cross-resistance with other antibacterial drugs. They are widely used in the world. QN antibiotics cannot be completely digested and absorbed in organisms and are often excreted in urine and feces in the form of original drugs or metabolites, which are widely occurring in surface water, groundwater, aquaculture wastewater, sewage treatment plants, sediments, and soil environment, thus causing environmental pollution. In this paper, the pollution status, biological toxicity, and removal methods of QN antibiotics at home and abroad were reviewed. Literature data showed that QNs and its metabolites had serious ecotoxicity. Meanwhile, the spread of drug resistance induced by continuous emission of QNs should not be ignored. In addition, adsorption, chemical oxidation, photocatalysis, and microbial removal of QNs are often affected by a variety of experimental conditions, and the removal is not complete, so it is necessary to combine a variety of processes to efficiently remove QNs in the future.

Optimized Green Nanoemulsions to Remove Pharmaceutical Enoxacin from Contaminated Bulk Aqueous Solution

We attempted to develop green nanoemulsions (ENE1-ENE5) using capryol-C90 (C90), lecithin, Tween 80, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). HSPiP software and experimentally obtained data were used to explore excipients. ENE1-ENE5 nanoemulsions were prepared and evaluated for in vitro characterization parameters. An HSPiP based QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationship) module established a predictive correlation between the Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) and thermodynamic parameters. A thermodynamic stability study was conducted under stress conditions of temperature (from -21 to 45 °C) and centrifugation. ENE1-ENE5 were investigated for the influence of size, viscosity, composition, and exposure time on emulsification (5-15 min) on %RE (percent removal efficiency). Eventually, the treated water was evaluated for the absence of the drug using electron microscopy and optical emission spectroscopy. HSPiP program predicted excipients and established the relationship between enoxacin (ENO) and excipients in the QSAR module. The stable green nanoemulsions ENE-ENE5 possessed the globular size range of 61-189 nm, polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.1-0.53, viscosity of 87-237 cP, and ζ potential from -22.1 to -30.8 mV. The values of %RE depended upon the composition, globular size, viscosity, and exposure time. ENE5 showed %RE value as 99.5 ± 9.2% at 15 min of exposure time, which may be due to the available maximized adsorption surface. SEM-EDX (scanning electron microscopy-X-ray dispersive energy mode) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) negated the presence of ENO in the treated water. These variables were critical factors for efficient removal of ENO during water treatment process design. Thus, the optimized nanoemulsion can be a promising approach to treat water contaminated with ENO (a potential pharmaceutical antibiotics).

Seasonal distribution and dynamic evolution of antibiotics and evaluation of their resistance selection potential and ecotoxicological risk at a wastewater treatment plant in Jinan, China

The seasonal distribution and dynamic evolution of antibiotics in wastewater from main treatment areas and in sludge and their resistance selection potential and ecotoxicological risk were studied at a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Jinan, East China. Ten antibiotics were selected, and all were detected in wastewater and sludge samples, with fluoroquinolones showing the highest detection concentrations and frequencies. Seasonal fluctuations in the antibiotic concentrations in the influent, effluent, and sludge were observed, with the highest values in winter in most cases. The dynamic evolution of antibiotics during the treatment process differed among the seasons. The antibiotic removal efficiencies were incomplete, ranging from - 40.47 to 100%. Mass balance analysis showed that sulfonamides, roxithromycin, and metronidazole were mainly removed through biological processing, whereas fluoroquinolones, doxycycline, and chloramphenicol were removed through sludge adsorption. Levofloxacin, as well as a mixture of the 10 antibiotics from the effluent, could pose a low ecotoxicological risk to Daphnia in the receiving waters. Additionally, levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in the effluent and ciprofloxacin and metronidazole in the sludge may facilitate the selection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment.

Effects of natural nanoparticles on the acute toxicity, chronic effect, and oxidative stress response of phenicol antibiotics in Daphnia magna

Natural nanoparticles (NNP) are ubiquitous in natural water and can interact with other contaminants, causing ecotoxic effects on aquatic nontarget organisms. However, the impact of NNPs on the ecotoxicity of antibiotics remains largely unknown. This work investigated the acute toxicity, chronic effect, and oxidative response and damage in Daphnia magna co-exposed to phenicol antibiotics (chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol) and different concentrations of NNPs (10 mg/L: environmentally relevant concentration; 100 mg/L: a high concentration that caused no apparent immobilization in D. magna). The results showed that the acute toxicity of chloramphenicol was increased by 10 mg/L NNPs but decreased by 100 mg/L NNPs; both concentrations of NNPs increased and decreased acute toxicities of thiamphenicol and chloramphenicol + thiamphenicol treatments, respectively. After long-term exposure, phenicol antibiotics (1 μg/L) and NNP (10 mg/L) mixtures in environmentally relevant concentrations significantly affected the reproduction of D. magna but did not influence their growth. The catalase activity, reduced glutathione level, and malonaldehyde content in D. magna also varied with the NNPs concentrations. Notably, the lowest concentration of thiamphenicol and chloramphenicol + thiamphenicol combined with NNPs significantly increased the malondialdehyde content in D. magna compared with the control, indicating membrane lipid peroxidation occurred in daphnids. This study suggests that the toxic effects of contaminants and NNPs on aquatic organisms should be considered thoroughly to avoid underestimating the hazard of these pollutants in the actual aquatic environment.

Green Nanoemulsion Water/Ethanol/Transcutol/LabM-Based Treatment of Pharmaceutical Antibiotic Erythromycin-Contaminated Aqueous Bulk Solution

Contaminated wastewater released from hospital, domestic, and industrial sources is a major challenge to aquatic animals and human health. In this study, we addressed removal of erythromycin (ERN) from contaminated water employing water/ethanol/Transcutol/Labrafil M 1944 CS (LabM) green nanoemulsions as a nanocarrier system. ERN is a major antibiotic contaminant harming aquatic and human lives. Green nanoemulsions were prepared and evaluated for size, size distribution (measuring polydispersity index), stability, zeta potential, refractive index, and viscosity. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to visualize morphological behavior. The treated-water was analyzed for ERN by the spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis mode (SEM-EDX), and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) techniques. We studied factors (composition, size, viscosity, and time of exposure) affecting removal efficiency (%RE). The obtained green nanoemulsions (ENE1-ENE5) were stable and clear (<180 nm). ENE5 had the smallest size (58 nm), a low polydispersity index value (0.19), optimal viscosity (∼121.7 cP), and a high negative zeta potential value (-25.4 mV). A high %RE value (98.8%) was achieved with a reduced size, a high water amount, a low Capryol 90 content, and optimal viscosity as evidenced by the obtained results. Moreover, contact time had insignificant effect on %RE. UV-vis spectroscopy, SEM-EDX, and ICP-OES confirmed the absence of ERN from the treated water. Conclusively, ERN can easily be removed from polluted water employing green nanoemulsions prepared from the optimized excipients, and evaluated characteristics.

Azithromycin Adsorption onto Different Soils

The antibiotic azithromycin (AZM) is one of the most persistent in the environment, with potential to cause serious health and environmental problems. As some polluting discharges containing this antibiotic can reach the soil, it is clearly relevant determining the ability of soils with different characteristics to retain it. In this research, AZM adsorption and desorption were studied for a variety of soils, using batch-type experiments. The results show that, at low doses of antibiotic added (less than or equal to 50 µmol L−1), the adsorption always reached 100%, while when higher concentrations were added (between 200 and 600 µmol L−1) the highest adsorption corresponded to soils with higher pH values. Adsorption data were fitted to the Linear, Langmuir and Freundlich models, with the latter showing the best fit, in view of the determination coefficient. No desorption was detected, indicating that AZM is strongly adsorbed to the soils evaluated, suggesting that the risks of environmental problems due to this contaminant are minimized for these edaphic media. These results can be considered relevant with respect to risk assessment and possible programming of measures aimed at controlling environmental contamination by emerging contaminants, especially from the group of antibiotics, and in particular from AZM.

Removal mechanisms of erythromycin by microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa and toxicity assessment during the treatment process

Microalgae-based biotechnology for antibiotic removal has received increasing attention as an economical and green method. This study investigated the removal mechanism of erythromycin by Chlorella pyrenoidosa and its correlation with the ecotoxic responses of microalgae. The degradation products (DPs) were identified, and their toxicity was predicted. The results indicated that only 4.04 %, 6.28 % and 23.53 % of erythromycin were left after 21-day microalgae treatment in 0.1, 1.0 and 10 mg/L treatments, respectively. Biodegradation contributed 48.62-67.01 %, 16.67-52.32 % and 6.42-24.82 %, while abiotic degradation contributed 8.76-29.61 %, 5.19-41.39 %, and 16.55-51.22 % to erythromycin attenuation in 0.1, 1.0, and 10 mg/L treatments, respectively. The growth and physiological-biochemical parameters of microalgae were slightly affected in low concentration treatment, which may be the main reason that biodegradation was the prominent removal mechanism. By contrast, oxidative damage in high concentration treatment inhibited the cell growth and chlorophyll content of microalgae, which hindered erythromycin biodegradation. In addition, eleven erythromycin degradation products (DPs) were identified during microalgae treatment of 21 days. Seven DPs including DP717, DP715, DP701A, DP701B, DP657, DP643, and DP557, represented higher toxicity to aquatic organisms than erythromycin.

Occurrence and distribution of azithromycin in wastewater treatment plants, seawater, and sediments of the northern part of the Persian Gulf around Bushehr port: A comparison with Pre-COVID 19 pandemic

One of the environmental effects of COVID 19 is the contamination of ecosystems with antibiotics due to their high consumption to treat this disease. Many years ago, the distribution of antibiotics including azithromycin (Azi) in wastewater treatment plants in Bushehr city, seawater, and sediment of the Persian Gulf has been investigated. As Azi has been prescribed to COVID 19 patients, contamination of the environment with this drug can also be assumed. Thus, we decided to examine this hypothesis by repeating our previous study during COVID 19 period. We collected wastewater samples from influent, effluent, and different units of three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) including one municipal WWTP (Plant A) and two hospital-WWTPs (Plant B and C). Seawater and adjusted sediments were gathered from 8 stations located in the Persian Gulf in two seasons to evaluate the special and temporal variation. The results showed a huge growth of Azi pollution in all studied matrixes. The mean Azi values in the influent of Plant A, B, and C were 145 ng/L, 110 ng/L, and 896 ng/L, which represented an 9, 6, and 48-time increase compared with those obtained in 2017 (before COVID 19). The Azi removal efficiency had a different behavior compared to before COVID 19. The mean concentration of Azi in seawater and sediment samples was 9 ng/L and 6 ng/g, which was 3 and 4-fold higher than the previous study. Opposed to our former study, the Azi amount in the aqueous phase was less subjected to temporal seasonal variations. Our observations indicated the wide distribution of Azi in the environment and a future threat of intense growth of antibiotic resistance in ecosystems.

Development and applications of diffusive gradients in thin films for monitoring pharmaceuticals in surface waters

Pharmaceutical contaminants in surface water have raised significant concerns because of their potential ecological risks. In particular, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related pharmaceuticals can be released to surface water and reduce environmental water quality. Therefore, reliable and robust sampling tools are required for monitoring pharmaceuticals. In this study, passive sampling devices of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGTs) were developed for sampling 35 pharmaceuticals in surface waters. The results demonstrated that hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) was more suitable for DGT-based devices compared with XAD18 and XDA1 resins. For most pharmaceuticals, the performance of the HLB-DGT devices were independent of pH (5.0-9.0), ionic strength (0.001-0.5 M), and flow velocity (0-400 rpm). The HLB-DGT devices exhibited linear pharmaceutical accumulation for 7 days, and time-weighted average concentrations provided by the HLB-DGT were comparable to those measured by conventional grab sampling. Compared to previous studies, we extended DGT monitoring to include three antiviral drugs used for COVID-19 treatment, which may inspire further exploration on identifying the effects of COVID-19 on ecological and human health.

Global review of macrolide antibiotics in the aquatic environment: Sources, occurrence, fate, ecotoxicity, and risk assessment

The extensive use of macrolide antibiotics (MCLs) has led to their frequent detection in aquatic environments, affecting water quality and ecological health. In this study, the sources, global distribution, environmental fate, ecotoxicity and global risk assessment of MCLs were analyzed based on recently published literature. The results revealed that there are eight main sources of MCLs in the water environment. These pollution sources resulted in MCL detection at average or median concentrations of up to 3847 ng/L, and the most polluted water bodies were the receiving waters of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and densely inhabited areas. Considering the environmental fate, adsorption, indirect photodegradation, and bioremoval may be the main attenuation mechanisms in natural water environments. N-demethylation, O-demethylation, sugar and side chain loss from MCL molecules were the main pathways of MCLs photodegradation. Demethylation, phosphorylation, N-oxidation, lactone ring hydrolysis, and sugar loss were the main biodegradation pathways. The median effective concentration values of MCLs for microalgae, crustaceans, fish, and invertebrates were 0.21, 39.30, 106.42, and 28.00 mg/L, respectively. MCLs induced the generation of reactive oxygen species, that caused oxidative stress to biomolecules, and affected gene expression related to photosynthesis, energy metabolism, DNA replication, and repair. Moreover, over 50% of the reported water bodies represented a medium to high risk to microalgae. Further studies on the development of tertiary treatment technologies for antibiotic removal in WWTPs, the combined ecotoxicity of antibiotic mixtures at environmental concentration levels, and the development of accurate ecological risk assessment models should be encouraged.

The Current Status and Prevention of Antibiotic Pollution in Groundwater in China

The problem of environmental pollution caused by the abuse of antibiotics has received increasing attention. However, only in recent years have antibiotic pollution and its risk assessment to the environment been deeply studied. Although there has been a large number of reports about the input, occurrence, destination, and influence of antibiotics in the past 10 years, systemic knowledge of antibiotics in the groundwater environment is still lacking. This review systematically expounds the sources, migration and transformation, pollution status, and potential risks to the ecological environment of antibiotics in groundwater systems, by integrating 10 years of existing research results. The results showed that 47 kinds of antibiotics in four categories, mainly sulfonamides and fluoroquinolones, have been detected; antibiotics in groundwater species will induce the production of resistance genes and cause ecological harm. In view of the entire process of antibiotics entering groundwater, the current antibiotic control methods at various levels are listed, including the control of the discharge of antibiotics at source, the removal of antibiotics in water treatment plants, and the treatment of existing antibiotic contamination in groundwater. Additionally, the future research direction of antibiotics in groundwater is pointed out, and suggestions and prospects for antibiotic control are put forward.

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of certain antibiotics in 51 urban wastewater treatment plants in the transition zone between North and South China

The release of antibiotics from WWTPs into the environment has raised increasing concern worldwide. The monitoring of antibiotics in WWTPs throughout a region is crucial for emerging pollutant management. A large-scale survey of the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of seven antibiotics in 51 WWTPs was conducted in Shaanxi Province, China. Norfloxacin and ofloxacin had the highest detection concentrations of 474.2 and 656.18 ng L^-1, respectively. Antibiotic residues in effluents were decreased by 5.88-94.16 % after different treatment processes. In particular, A²O or mixed processes performed well in removing target antibiotic compounds simultaneously. The ecological risk posed by antibiotic compounds detected in effluents was calculated using the risk quotient (RQ). Norfloxacin, ofloxacin, tetracycline, and roxithromycin posed different levels of potential ecotoxicological risk (RQ = 0.02-7.59). Based on the sum of the RQ values of individual antibiotic compounds, each investigated WWTP showed potential ecological risk. WWTPs with high risk levels were mainly found in the central region, while those in the southern region exhibited low risk levels, and those in the northern region showed risk levels between medium and high. This comprehensive investigation provides promising results to support the safe use and control of antibiotics in the study area.

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on pharmaceuticals in wastewater treated for beneficial reuse: Two case studies in central Pennsylvania

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater surveillance was leveraged as a powerful tool for monitoring community-scale health. Further, the well-known persistence of some pharmaceuticals through wastewater treatment plants spurred concerns that increased usage of pharmaceuticals during the pandemic would increase the concentrations in wastewater treatment plant effluent. We collected weekly influent and effluent samples from May 2020 through May 2021 from two wastewater treatment plants in central Pennsylvania, the Penn State Water Reclamation Facility and the University Area Joint Authority, that provide effluent for beneficial reuse, including for irrigation. Samples were analyzed for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (influent only), two over-the-counter medicines (acetaminophen and naproxen), five antibiotics (ampicillin, doxycycline, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim), two therapeutic agents (remdesivir and dexamethasone), and hydroxychloroquine. Although there were no correlations between pharmaceutical and virus concentration, remdesivir detection occurred when the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 increased, and dexamethasone detection co-occurred with the presence of patients with COVID-19 on ventilators. Additionally, Penn State decision-making regarding instruction modes explained the temporal variation of influent pharmaceutical concentrations, with detection occurring primarily when students were on campus. Risk quotients calculated for pharmaceuticals with known effective and lethal concentrations at which 50% of a population is affected for fish, daphnia, and algae were generally low in the effluent; however, some acute risks from sulfamethoxazole were high when students returned to campus. Remdesivir and dexamethasone persisted through the wastewater treatment plants, thereby introducing novel pharmaceuticals directly to soils and surface water. These results highlight connections between human health and water quality and further demonstrate the broad utility of wastewater surveillance.

Removal of micropollutants by UASB reactor and post-treatment by Fenton and photo-Fenton: Matrix effect and toxicity responses

Literature is scarce on the performance of Fenton-based processes as post-treatment of municipal wastewater treated by upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. This study aims to perform Fenton and photo-Fenton from UASB influent and effluent matrices to remove micropollutants (MPs) models: atrazine (ATZ), rifampicin (RIF), and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2). A UASB reactor at bench-scale (14 L) was operated with these MPs, and the AOPs experiments at bench-scale were performed on a conventional photochemical reactor (1 L). A high-pressure vapor mercury lamp was used for photo-Fenton process (UVA-Vis) as a radiation source. Microcrustacean Daphnia magna (acute toxicity) and seeds of Lactuca sativa (phytotoxicity) were indicator organisms for toxicity monitoring. The UASB reactor showed stability removing 90% of the mean chemical oxygen demand, and removal efficiencies for ATZ, RIF, and EE2 were 16.5%, 45.9%, and 15.7%, respectively. A matrix effect was noted regarding the application of both Fenton and photo-Fenton in UASB influent and effluent to remove MPs and toxicity responses. The pesticide ATZ was the most recalcitrant compound, yet the processes carried out from UASB effluent achieved removal >99.99%. The post-treatment of the UASB reactor by photo-Fenton removed acute toxicity in D. magna for all treatment times. However, only the photo-Fenton conducted for 90 min did not result in a phytotoxic effect in L. sativa.

Occurrence, transformation, bioaccumulation, risk and analysis of pharmaceutical and personal care products from wastewater: a review

Almost all aspects of society from food security to disease control and prevention have benefited from pharmaceutical and personal care products, yet these products are a major source of contamination that ends up in wastewater and ecosystems. This issue has been sharply accentuated during the coronavirus disease pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) due to the higher use of disinfectants and other products. Here we review pharmaceutical and personal care products with focus on their occurrence in the environment, detection, risk, and removal.

Transformation products of tetracyclines in three typical municipal wastewater treatment plants

Antibiotics in the environment could undergo various processes with formation of transformation products, but little has been known about their occurrence and (eco)toxicological consequences. Here we investigated the occurrence and fate of nine transformation products of four tetracyclines (tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline and doxycycline) in three municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Guangzhou, China. The results showed the detection of all the tetracyclines and their transformation products in the WWTPs, with mean concentrations ranging from 17.8 ng/L (anhydrotetracycline) to 49.1 ng/L (oxytetracycline) in influent, 3.03 ng/L (tetracycline) to 6.94 ng/L (4-epi-chlortetracycline) in effluent, and 19.8 ng/g (isochlortetracycline) to 503 ng/g (4-epi-tertracycline) in sludge, respectively. The transformation products of tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline and doxycycline accounted for 73%-83%, 26%-52%, 70%-73% and 69%-74% of total concentrations, respectively. The aqueous removal rates of tetracyclines and their transformation products in the three WWTPs ranged from 18.4% (demethyl-chlortetracycline) to 93.7% (oxytetracycline). Mass balance analysis based on both aqueous and solid phase showed that their removals were mainly attributed to the sludge adsorption. Residual tetracyclines and their transformation products in the effluents would pose no obvious ecological risks to three aquatic organisms (green algae, daphnia and fish). However, 43.5% of sludge samples had high risks from these tetracyclines and transformation products, especially the compounds with poor biodegradability. The results from this study suggest that transformation products should be included in future environmental monitoring and control.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Risk Assessment of Antibiotics in the Aquatic Environment of the Karst Plateau Wetland of Yangtze River Basin, Southwestern China

In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk of 40 commonly used antibiotics, including 15 sulfonamides (SAs), 9 fluoroquinolones (FQs), 7 macrolides (MCs), 3 tetracyclines (TCs), 2 chloramphenicols (CAPs), and 4 other categories, in the aquatic environment of the karst plateau wetland Caohai of the Yangtze River basin in southwestern China are reported. In total, 27 antibiotics were detected, with the detection rate ranging from 5% to 100%. The total concentration at each site ranged from 21.8 ng/L to 954 ng/L, with the average concentration being 189 ng/L. FQs and MCs were the most predominant categories, contributing 29.3% and 25.0% of the total antibiotic burden. The five most commonly detected antibiotics were ciprofloxacin (CIP), oxytetracycline (OTC), acetyl sulfamethoxazole (ASMZ), norfloxacin (NOR), and florfenicol (FF). The spatial distribution of the total concentration at each site demonstrated a decreasing trend from the southeastern area upstream adjoining the main counties to the northwestern area downstream, indicating that human activities have a great impact. Meanwhile, the natural attenuation rates of different types of antibiotics in the direction of flow ranged from 17.6% to 100%, which implied the natural purification potential of the wetland for antibiotics. The cluster analysis results indicated that domestic sewage and wastewater from agriculture and animal husbandry were the main sources of contamination in the surrounding wetland. Risk quotients (RQs) assessment showed that most of the individuals were at low to medium risk and that the adverse risks posed by mixtures of antibiotics were higher than those posed by the individual antibiotics.

Efficient with low-cost removal and adsorption mechanisms of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin on modified thermal kaolin: experimental and theoretical studies

Quinolone antibiotics (QNs) can be potential hazard to environment and human. Combination of experimental and theoretical studies was used to analyze the adsorption properties of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin on modified thermally activated kaolin (KL). Main factors (calcination temperature, dose, pH, cations and regeneration) affecting the adsorption were discussed. Adsorption processes fit the pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir model well. The adsorption removal of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin can reach 88.53%, 89.43% and 91.46%, respectively. Cations inhibited adsorption, and AlS-KLB can maintain 80% efficiency in five cycles under optimal conditions. Simulations showed that the materials had good adsorption capacity for QNs, and the "①" of KL had the best capacity. Simulations explain the adsorption mechanism: F, H, O atoms of QNs are covalently bonded to O atoms from KL, Al₂O₃ and Al (OH)₃, C atoms from amorphous carbon and H atoms from C-H and Al (OH)₃. The Al atoms of Al₂O₃ and Al, Si atoms of KL are ionically bonded to F, H, O atoms of QNs. This study shed new light on the removal of QNs by providing low-cost and efficient modified KL and elucidating the adsorption mechanism in conjunction with DFT simulations.

Critical review on negative emerging contaminant removal efficiency of wastewater treatment systems: Concept, consistency and consequences

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are not completely removed by wastewater treatment owing to their capabilities of making complexes, toxic derivatives, byproduct formation, and dynamic partitioning. Negative contaminant removal i.e., higher concentrations (up to 5731%) of these ECs in the effluent with respect to the influent sampled on the same occasions, is globally prevalent in almost all types of treatment systems. Conventional WWTPs showed the highest negative removal (NR) for Carbamazepine, and Carbadox. Conjugation-deconjugation, types of WWTPs, transformations, leaching, operational parameters, sampling schemes, and nature of substance governs the NR efficiencies. Among the various categories of micropollutants, pesticides and beta-blockers are reported to exhibit the maximum percentage of NR, posing threat to human and the environment. With > 200% of NR for beta-blockers, low blood-pressure related symptoms may likely to get more prevalent in the near future. Study red-flags this phenomenon of negative removal that needs urgent attention.

Insight into the role of different extracellular polymeric substances components on trimethoprim adsorption by activated sludge

Adsorption is the primary mechanism of antibiotic removal in wastewater treatment plants, wherein the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the activated sludge play an important role. Due to their complex characteristics, the effect of EPS components on antibiotic adsorption is unknown. Therefore, in this study, the role of main components of EPS in antibiotic adsorption was explored using enzymatic treatment. The results revealed that proteinase K and α-amylase can efficiently hydrolyse the proteins and polysaccharides of EPS. The protein content of EPS reduced from 31.25 mg/g VSS to 21.53, 18.75, and 10.76 mg/g VSS, after treatment with proteinase K, α-amylase and their combination, respectively; the polysaccharides content also observed a similar decrease from 15.20 mg/g VSS to 8.22, 7.83, and 6.03 mg/g VSS, respectively. The humic substance in EPS was stable during enzymatic treatment. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of activated sludge treated by enzyme for trimethoprim (TMP)- a typical antibiotic, was significantly increased from 2.19 μg/g VSS to 4.68, 5.34, and 8.36 μg/g VSS after treatment with proteinase K, α-amylase and their mixture. The adsorption process was adequately described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. A multivariable linear regression model was subsequently used to quantify the adsorption capacity of activated sludge for TMP considering the concentration of EPS components. The modelling and validated results showed that the model could satisfactorily predict the TMP adsorption capacity. The results of this study can provide new insights into the role of EPS on antibiotic transformation in biological wastewater treatment systems.

Influence on denitrifying community performance by the long-term exposure to sulfamethoxazole and chlortetracycline in the continuous-flow EGSB reactors

The response of the denitrification community to long-term antibiotic exposure requires further investigation. Here, the significantly altered denitrifying community structure and function were observed by continuous exposure to 1 mg/L sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) or chlortetracycline (CTC) for 180 d in the expanded granular sludge bed reactors. Thaurea, positively correlated with SMZ and NO₃^- removal efficiency (NrE), was highly enriched in the SMZ-added reactor, while, Comamons and Acinetobacter were largely inhibited. The acute inhibited and then gradual-recovered NrE (87.17-90.38 %) was observed with highly expressed narG, indicating the adaptability of Thaurea to SMZ. However, the abundance of Thaurea and Comamonas greatly decreased, while Melioribacter and Acinetobacter were largely enriched in the CTC-added reactor. CTC created more serious and continuous inhibition of NO₃^- reduction (NrE of 64.53-66.95 %), with lowly expressed narG. Improved NO₂^- reduction capacity was observed in both reactors (70.16-95.42 %) with highly expressed nirS and nosZ, revealing the adaptability of NO₂^- reduction populations to antibiotics.

UV/Chlorination of sulfamethazine (SMZ) and other prescription drugs: kinetics, transformation products and insights into the combined toxicological assessment

The UV/chlorination of three prescription drugs, sulfamethazine (SMZ), gemfibrozil (GEM) and antipyrine (ANT) were studied by the investigation of kinetics, transformation products and combined toxicological assessment. The degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with half-lives significantly affected by chlorine dosage, without being greatly influenced by pH value and bromide concentration. Based on the Frontier Orbital Theory, the structures of products by hydroxylation or chlorine substitution were proposed and the transformation pathways were introduced, with two, two and one never-before-reported products identified for SMZ, GEM and ANT, respectively. Compared to the results of the experiments with artificial water sample, the degradation kinetics of the three prescription drugs was observed with a prolonged half-lives in both Yangtze River and Taihu Lake water, suggesting that aromatic containing transformation products (TPs) may also exist in UV/chlorine treated natural waters. The results of combined toxicity on E. coli showed that the antagonism effect predominated in most binary and ternary combinations. However, the synergistic toxicity of combinations at low concentrations of prescription drugs subjected to UV/chlorine should be cautioned, which was more close to the natural concentration of prescription drugs in waters.

Degradation of high concentrations of azithromycin when present in a high organic content wastewater by using a continuously fed laboratory-scale UASB bioreactor

As the presence of emergent contaminants in wastewater, such as antibiotics, has become a threat for public health, the evaluation of strategies to treat them has been gaining importance. A critical example of this situation can be found in wastewaters coming from the pharmaceutical industry, where high concentrations of antibiotics are sometimes accompanied by high organic contents. Even the agroindustry can be affected by a similar problem when cattle infections are treated with antibiotics and part of the antibiotic-contaminated milk has to be wasted. With these situations in mind, in the present study we evaluated a progressive acclimation strategy for a granular sludge in a UASB reactor treating a high organic-content synthetic wastewater contaminated with azithromycin. In parallel, we tested a previously reported low-cost method for azithromycin determination by spectrophotometry, obtaining results comparable with liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Although azithromycin has been reported as recalcitrant and resistant to biological degradation, the antibiotic was removed with efficiencies over 50% for wastewater with 10 mg L^-1 of azithromycin and a COD of more than 4000 mgO₂ L^-1. Furthermore, efficiencies over 40% were achieved for wastewater with higher azithromycin concentrations (80 mg L^-1) and a COD of 20,000 mgO₂ L^-1. A careful acclimation strategy permitted the partial removal of azithromycin from wastewater when treating concentrations comparable and higher than what would be expected for domestic and hospital wastewaters, even when its chemical oxygen demand is considerably higher than the average maximum of around 1000 mgO₂ L^-1.

Adsorption and detoxification of pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater using nanomaterials: A review on mechanism, kinetics, valorization and circular economy

Antibiotics overuse, inappropriate conduct, and discharge have led to adverse effects on various ecosystems. The occurrence of antibiotics in surface and drinking water is a matter of global concern. It is responsible for multiple disorders, including disruption of endocrine hormones and high chronic toxicity. The hospitals, pharmaceutical industries, households, cattle farms, and aquaculture are the primary discharging sources of antibiotics into the environment. This review provides complete detail on applying different nanomaterials or nanoparticles for the efficient removal of antibiotics from the diverse ecosystem with a broader perspective. Efforts have been made to focus on the degradation pathways and mechanism of antibiotic degradation using nanomaterials. More light has been shed on applying nanostructures in photocatalysis, which would be an economical and efficient solution. The nanoscale material or nanoparticles have incredible potential for mineralizing pharmaceutical compounds in aqueous solutions at low cost, easy handling characteristics, and high efficacy. Furthermore, nanoparticles can absorb the pharmaceutical by-products and wastes at a minimum cost as they can be easily recycled. With the increasing number of research in this direction, the valorization of pharmaceutical wastes and by-products will continue to expand as we progress from old conventional approaches towards nanotechnology. The utilization of nanomaterials in pharmaceutical wastewater remediation is discussed with a major focus on valorization, energy generation, and minimization and its role in the circular economy creating sustainable development.

Responses of performance, antibiotic resistance genes and bacterial communities of partial nitrification system to polyamide microplastics

Polyamide (PA), a prevalent microplastics (MPs), is often collected from wastewater treatment plants. However, the responses of partial nitrification system to PA MPs are unclear. The short-term and long-term effect of PA MPs on the partial nitrification system was slight, but the ammonia oxidation rate decreased slowly with the increase of PA MPs concentration. Meantime, the PA MPs addition could decrease the microbial diversity, alter microbial community structure of the system and facilitate the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) including fabI, intI1 and Tn916/1545. Correlation analysis and network analysis indicated that Ferruginibacter, Hyphomicrobium, Terrimonas, Brevundimonas and Plasticicumulans in the system might be the dominant hosts of ARGs. In addition, oligotyping analysis indicated not all oligotypes of the relevant genus showed positive correlation with ARGs. In general, PA MPs had almost no effect on performance but altered community structure and increased ARGs spread risk of the partial nitrification system.

A review on occurrence of emerging pollutants in waters of the MENA region

Little is known about the occurrence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in waters in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region despite the extensive use of low-quality water there. Available data dealing with the sources, occurrence and removal of EPs within the MENA region in different categories of water is collected, presented and analyzed in this literature review. According to the collected database, the occurrence and removal efficiency of EPs in the water matrix in the MENA region is available, respectively, for 13 and six countries of the 18 in total; no available data is registered for the rest. Altogether, 290 EPs have been observed in different water matrices across the MENA countries, stemming mainly from industrial effluents, agricultural practices, and discharge or reuse of treated wastewater (TWW). Pharmaceutical compounds figure among the most frequently reported compounds in wastewater, TWW, surface water, and drinking water. Nevertheless, pesticides are the most frequently detected pollutants in groundwater. Worryingly, 57 cases of EPs have been reported in different fresh and drinking waters, exceeding World Health Organization (WHO) and European Commission (EC) thresholds. Overall, pharmaceuticals, organic compounds, and pesticides are the most concerning EP groups. The review revealed the ineffectiveness of treatment processes used in the region to remove EPs. Negative removals of some EPs such as carbamazepine, erythromycin, and sulfamethoxazole were recorded, suggesting their possible accumulation or release during treatment. This underlines the need to set in place and strengthen control measures, treatment procedures, standards, and policies for such pollutants in the region.

Concentrations and Risk Assessments of Antibiotics in an Urban-Rural Complex Watershed with Intensive Livestock Farming

Antibiotics used for the treatment of humans and livestock are released into the environment, whereby they pose a grave threat to biota (including humans) as they can cause the emergence of various strains of resistant bacteria. An improved understanding of antibiotics in the environment is thus vital for appropriate management and mitigation. Herein, surface water and groundwater samples containing antibiotics were analyzed in an urban-rural complex watershed (Cheongmi Stream) comprising intensive livestock farms by collecting samples across different time points and locations. The spatiotemporal trends of the residual antibiotics were analyzed, and ecological and antibiotic resistance-based risk assessments were performed considering their concentrations. The results showed that the concentrations and detection frequencies of the residual antibiotics in the surface water were affected by various factors such as agricultural activities and point sources, and were higher than those found in groundwater; however, frequent detection of antibiotics in groundwater showed that residual antibiotics were influenced by factors such as usage pattern and sewage runoff. Furthermore, few antibiotics posed ecological risks. The risk assessment methods adopted in this study can be applied elsewhere, and the results can be considered in the environmental management of residual antibiotics in the Cheongmi Stream watershed.

Strategies to Control Human Health Risks Arising from Antibiotics in the Environment: Molecular Modification of QNs for Enhanced Plant-Microbial Synergistic Degradation

In the present work, a comprehensive screening and evaluation system was established to improve the plant-microbial synergistic degradation effects of QNs. The study included the construction of a 3D-QSAR model, the molecular modification, environmental friendliness and functional evaluation of drugs, degradation pathway simulation, and human health risk assessment. Molecular dynamics was applied to quantify the binding capacity of QNs toward the plant degradation enzyme (peroxidase) and microbial degradation enzymes (manganese peroxidase, lignin peroxidase, and laccase). The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used in combination with the weighted average method for normalization and assigning equal weights to the plant and microbial degradation effect values of the QNs. Considering the synergistic degradation effect value as the dependent variable and the molecular information of the QNs as the independent variable, a 3D-QSAR model was constructed for the plant-microbial synergistic degradation effect of QNs. The constructed model was then employed to conduct the molecular modification, environmental friendliness and functional evaluation, degradation pathway simulation, and human health risk assessment of transformation products using pharmacokinetics and toxicokinetics. The results revealed that the synergistic degradation effect 3D-QSAR (CoMSIA) model exhibited good internal and external prediction ability, fitting ability, stability, and no overfitting phenomenon. Norfloxacin (NOR) was used as the target molecule in the molecular modification. A total of 35 NOR derivatives with enhanced plant-microbial synergistic degradation effect (1.32-21.51%) were designed by introducing small-volume, strongly electronegative, and hydrophobic hydrogen bond receptor groups into the active group of the norfloxacin structure. The environment-friendliness and the functionality of NOR were evaluated prior to and after the modification, which revealed seven environment-friendly FQs derivatives exhibiting moderate improvement in stability and bactericidal efficacy. The simulation of the NOR plant and microbial degradation pathways prior to and after the modification and the calculation of the reaction energy barrier revealed Pathway A (D-17 to D-17-2) and Pathway B (D-17 to D-17-4) as the most prone degradation pathways in plants and Pathway A (D-17 to D-17-1) and Pathway B (D-17 to D-17-4) as the most prone degradation pathways in microorganisms. This demonstrated that the degradation of the modified NOR derivatives was significantly enhanced, with the hydroxylation and piperazine ring substitution reaction playing an important role in the degradation process. Finally, the parameters, including hepatotoxicity, mutagenicity, and rodent carcinogenicity, among others, predicted using the pharmacokinetics and toxicokinetics analyses revealed a significant reduction in the human health risk associated with the modified NOR, along with a considerable reduction in the toxicity of its transformation products, implying that the human health risk associated with the transformation products was reduced remarkably. The present study provides a theoretical basis for novel ideas and evaluation programs for improving the plant-microbial synergistic degradation of the QNs antibiotics for source control and drug design, thereby reducing the residues of these antibiotics and the associated hazard in the complex plant-soil environment, ultimately decreasing the potential risks to human health.

Microalgae-based removal of contaminants of emerging concern: Mechanisms in Chlorella vulgaris and mixed algal-bacterial cultures

Incomplete removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) has been reported for conventional wastewater treatment technologies. Microalgae-based treatment has recently gained interest thanks to simultaneous removal capacity of organic and inorganic compounds and potentially CECs. In this study, a lab-scale monoculture of Chlorella vulgaris and mixed microalgal-bacterial culture were compared in terms of removal of 28 CECs (bisphenols, 2018 EU Watch List substances, including neonicotinoids, pharmaceuticals, selected transformation products). The removal pathways in light and dark abiotic controls were also studied. Batch photobioreactors were run at hydraulic retention times of 11-12 days and CECs spiked at environmentally relevant concentrations (1-20 μg L^-1). The mixed culture was better at removing bisphenols, compared to C. vulgaris. Bisphenols' log K_ow was significant in removal pathways, where bisphenols with high log K_ow were removed abiotically while bisphenols with low log K_ow were mainly biodegraded. The removal degrees and the pathways of pharmaceuticals and EU Watch List substances were comparable between both cultures, showing no impact of log K_ow for most compounds; however, the removal with C. vulgaris was faster for some. High log K_ow was associated with high removal of estradiol in abiotic controls, showing the importance of adsorption onto biomass and suspended matter.

Environmental Risk Assessment of Active Human Pharmaceutical Ingredients in Urban Rivers in Japan

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) have become a public concern owing to their possible adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan (MHLW) issued "Guidance on the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) in new pharmaceutical development" in 2016. To evaluate the validity of phase 1 in the MHLW's ERA guidance, we monitored the measured environmental concentrations (MECs) of approved APIs in urban rivers and sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Japan and compared these MECs with the predicted environmental concentration (PEC). We collected water samples from urban seven rivers and three STPs during each season. Fifty-one APIs for human and veterinary use and the artificial sweetener sucralose were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Forty-four APIs were observed in the rivers and 42 were found in the influent and effluent of STPs, with levels ranging from nanograms to micrograms per liter. The action limit in phase I of the MHLW's guidance was set to 10 ng/L, and there was no API except for ketoprofen, for which PEC of the MHLW's guidance (PECjapan) was lower than 10 ng/L and the maximum MEC (MECmax) was 10 ng/L or greater. Almost all APIs also had median MECs that were lower than those of the respective PECjapan. These results indicate that the PECjapan values in phase I of the MHLW's guidance were appropriate. However, some APIs had MECmax values that were greater than those of the respective PECjapan due to overestimation of the dilution factor of river water and/or underestimation of API production.

Strong links between load and manure and a comprehensive risk assessment of veterinary antibiotics with low KOW in intensive livestock farming watersheds

Various veterinary antibiotics (VAs) are used in large quantities as an essential component for intensive livestock farming, and can flow into the environment from various pollution sources. In this study, VAs in surface water and groundwater in the Gwangcheon stream watershed, an intensive livestock farming area in Korea, were analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatograph-quadrupole orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer with online solid phase extraction. Although the selected VAs are relatively mobile and have low K_OW values it is significant to assess their fates and ecological risks in the environment. The concentration of VAs in the surface water was higher than that in groundwater by approximately 23-fold, indicating that the former were directly introduced from pollution sources such as livestock manure. An analysis of the correlation between livestock manure production and the residuals of VAs in the stream showed a high linearity (R² > 0.70), confirming that livestock excreta significantly contributed to the VAs in the watershed. A combined evaluation of environmental behaviors and ecological risks of VAs was performed for the first time using persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity properties and risk quotient values of VAs. Trimethoprim showed persistence and a potential impact on the ecosystem. The cumulative risk quotient values at one sampling point exceeded 1 indicating that several VAs can cumulatively cause local risk. The risk assessment method considering pollution sources, different locations, and correlation analysis applied in this study will be useful in evaluating the impacts of trace pollutants in watersheds.

Anaerobic biodegradation of levofloxacin by enriched microbial consortia: Effect of electron acceptors and carbon source

For improving the understanding of anaerobic degradation mechanism of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs), the degradation of a representative FQs, levofloxacin (LEV), by six enriched anaerobic consortia were explored in this study. The effect of sulfate and nitrate as the electron acceptor and glucose as the carbon source on LEV anaerobic degradation were investigated. Addition of glucose and nitrate alone deteriorated LEV removal from 36.5% to 32.7% and 29.1%, respectively. Addition of sulfate slightly improved LEV removal to 39.6%, while simultaneous addition of glucose and sulfate significantly enhanced LEV removal to 53.1%. Twelve biodegradation intermediates were identified, which indicated that cleavage of piperazine ring is prior to that of quinolone ring, and hydroxylation, defluorination, demethylation, and decarboxylation were the primary steps of LEV anaerobic degradation. Lactobacillus, unclassified _f_Enterobacteriaceae, and Bacillus were enriched by simultaneous addition of glucose and sulfate, with relative abundance of 63.5%, 32.7%, and 3.3%, respectively. The predicted high gene abundance of xenobiotics biodegradation & metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and assimilatory sulfate reduction in the consortium, indicated a co-metabolism between carbohydrate metabolism, sulfate metabolism, and LEV degradation under glucose and sulfate added condition. The study revealed that simultaneous addition of glucose and sulfate is the favorable condition for LEV anaerobic degradation.
