Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical inactivity in children and adolescents has become a pressing public health concern. Wearable activity trackers can allow self-monitoring of physical activity behaviour and promote autonomous motivation for exercise. However, the effects of wearable trackers on physical activity in young populations remain uncertain. METHODS In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, Embase, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science for publications from database inception up to Aug 30, 2023, without restrictions on language. Studies were eligible if they were randomised controlled trials or clustered randomised controlled trials that examined the use of wearable activity trackers to promote physical activity, reduce sedentary behaviours, or promote overall health in participants with a mean age of 19 years or younger, with no restrictions on health condition or study settings. Studies were excluded if children or adolescents were not the primary intervention cohort, or wearable activity trackers were not worn on users' bodies to objectively track users' physical activity levels. Two independent reviewers (WWA and FR) assessed eligibility of studies and contacted authors of studies if more information was needed to assess eligibility. We also searched reference lists from relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Systematic review software Covidence was used for study screening and data extraction. Study characteristics including study setting, participant characteristics, intervention characteristics, comparator, and outcome measurements were extracted from eligible studies. The two primary outcomes were objectively measured daily steps and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. We used a random-effects model with Hartung-Knapp adjustments to calculate standardised mean differences. Between-study heterogeneity was examined using Higgins I2 and Cochran Q statistic. Publication bias was assessed using Egger's regression test. This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42023397248. FINDINGS We identified 9619 studies from our database research and 174 studies from searching relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses, of which 105 were subjected to full text screening. We included 21 eligible studies, involving 3676 children and adolescents (1618 [44%] were female and 2058 [56%] were male, mean age was 13·7 years [SD 2·7]) in our systematic review and meta-analysis. Ten studies were included in the estimation of the effect of wearable activity trackers on objectively measured daily steps and 11 were included for objectively measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Compared with controls, we found a significant increase in objectively measured daily steps (standardised mean difference 0·37 [95% CI 0·09 to 0·65; p=0·013]; Q 47·60 [p<0·0001]; I2 72·7% [95% CI 53·4 to 84·0]), but not for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (-0·08 [-0·18 to 0·02; p=0·11]; Q 10·26 [p=0·74]; I2 0·0% [0·0 to 53·6]). INTERPRETATION Wearable activity trackers might increase daily steps in young cohorts of various health statuses, but not moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, highlighting the potential of wearable trackers for motivating physical activity in children and adolescents. More rigorously designed trials that minimise missing data are warranted to validate our positive findings on steps and to explore possible long-term effects. Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with chronic low back (cLBP) pain report reduced physical function and ability to participate in social roles and are more likely to use opioid pain medications. While self-management interventions have been shown to support these patients, their effectiveness has been limited due to poor patient engagement. "Patient activation" encompasses the skills, knowledge, and motivation that a person has to manage their health. Supporting patient activation may improve the effectiveness of self-management for cLBP. METHODS In this single-masked pilot study of adults with cLBP, patients were randomized to receive either no intervention (control) or 6 weekly sessions of an evidence-based web-based self-management program (SMP) with or without health behavior change counseling (HBCC) using motivational interviewing. Participants were assessed at baseline and at 12 and 26 weeks using the Patient Activation Measure, Oswestry Disability Index and PROMIS physical function, social role participation, and pain interference. We assessed acceptability and feasibility based on recruitment, session attendance, and follow-up. RESULTS Of 187 individuals screened, 105 were eligible and 34 were randomized to control (n = 12), SMP (n = 4), or SMP + HBCC (n = 18). The population had 19 women, 22 patients married or living with significant other, 13 Black or African American patients, and 4 Hispanic or Latino patients. Participants had a mean (SD) Oswestry Disability Index score of 42 (12), moderate impairments in physical function (40 (6.6)) and social roles (45 (10)), and moderately severe pain interference (61 (6.7)). Of 22 participants receiving SMP sessions, 20 participated in at least 1, 15 participated in at least 3, and 7 participated in all 6 sessions. Loss to follow-up was 6 over the 26-week study. Participants in the SMP and SMP + HBCC groups had at least medium effect size improvements in Patient Activation Measures and small-to-medium effect size improvements in Oswestry Disability Index scores and physical function and large effect size improvement in social roles at 12 weeks. Improvements persisted in the SMP + HBCC group at 26 weeks. CONCLUSIONS A web-based SMP is acceptable and feasible in this population. Participants who received augmentation with HBCC had persistent improvements in health outcomes at 26 weeks. Abstract
OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND To clarify whether mobile sleep applications alleviate insomnia symptoms among adults from multi-community. PATIENTS/METHODS A literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Cochrane, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases for articles related to mobile technology and sleep interventions published between database inceptions and March 27, 2023. We pooled relevant data using a random-effects model, and a meta-analysis was performed using a web version of the Cochrane Review Manager. The effect size was estimated and reported as the combined overall effect (weighted average). Forest plots were created, and the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale were used to evaluate studies. RESULTS After an initial screening and full-text reviews, seven studies were identified with a total of 10,139 participants (females n = 8844, 87.2 %) recruited from multi-community and not diagnosed with sleep disorders or taking medications. These studies included one cross-sectional study investigating mindfulness meditation apps and six randomized-controlled trials (RCTs), including one with sleep-feedback messaging, one comparing sleep applications with or without a wearable device, and four with multicomponent interventions based on cognitive theory and subsequent behavioral change techniques. In a meta-analysis of three cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)-based RCTs, the intervention group showed statistically significant improvements in insomnia symptoms according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index but with high heterogeneity, while two CBT-based RCTs showed no significant improvements in the Insomnia Severity Index with low heterogeneity. CONCLUSIONS A small body of evidence supports the use of CBT-based sleep applications to improve insomnia symptoms among adults from multi-community.

Abstract
Background: Current treatment protocols to prevent and treat pediatric obesity focus on prescriptive lifestyle interventions. However, treatment outcomes are modest due to poor adherence and heterogeneity in responses. Wearable technologies offer a unique solution as they provide real-time biofeedback that could improve adherence to and sustainability of lifestyle interventions. To date, all reviews on wearable devices in pediatric obesity cohorts have only explored biofeedback from physical activity trackers. Hence, we conducted a scoping review to (1) catalog other biofeedback wearable devices available in this cohort, (2) document various metrics collected from these devices, and (3) assess safety and adherence to these devices. Methods: This scoping review was conducted adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Fifteen eligible studies examined the use of biofeedback wearable devices beyond activity trackers in pediatric cohorts, with an emphasis on feasibility of these devices. Results: Included studies varied in sample sizes (15-203) and in ages 6-21 years. Wearable devices are being used to capture various metrics of multicomponent weight loss interventions to provide more insights about glycemic variability, cardiometabolic function, sleep, nutrition, and body fat percentage. High safety and adherence rates were reported among these devices. Conclusions: Available evidence suggests that wearable devices have several applications aside from activity tracking, which could modify health behaviors through real-time biofeedback. Overall, these devices appear to be safe and feasible so as to be employed in various settings in the pediatric age group to prevent and treat obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the earlier developed and evaluated 12-week UPcomplish intervention, the aim was to reduce sedentary behaviour (SB) among office workers and increase their quality of life (QoL). In the current study, we explored moderators of effectiveness. METHOD We applied a stepped wedge design with five intervention groups starting with time lags of seven weeks (n = 142, 96 females). Participants wore the VitaBit to continuously measure SB and received surveys about QoL and psychosocial determinants at the beginning, middle, and end of the intervention. We regressed baseline participant characteristics and behaviours onto intra-individual improvements (centred around calendar week means) in determinants, SB, performance objectives, and QoL. RESULTS Those scoring high in baseline intention, task performance, stress, vitality, and emotional well-being improved less in these variables. Baseline stress (β = - 0.05 [SE = 0.01; 95% CI = - 0.08, - 0.02; pcorrected = .02]) and emotional well-being (β = 0.02 [SE = 0.01; 95% CI = 0.01, 0.03; pcorrected = .02]) were associated with improvement in contextual performance. Baseline attitude (β = - 12.92 [SE = 3.93; 95% CI = - 20.80, - 5.04; pcorrected = .02]) and perceived behavioural control (PBC; β = - 9.27 [SE = 3.04; 95% CI = - 15.37, - 3.16; pcorrected = .03]) were negatively associated with improvements in emotional well-being. Post hoc analyses with a sub-group scoring lower in determinants revealed that improvement in PBC was positively associated with SB registration. CONCLUSION Participants scoring low in baseline determinants might profit from UPcomplish via an increase in PBC. In combination with changes within organizations (e.g. the implementation of standing desks), UPcomplish might potentially reduce SB. TRIAL REGISTRATION NL7503 - registered 1 February 2019.

Abstract
PURPOSE Existing sedentary behavior interventions have largely achieved mixed results. Conventionally, interventions have attempted to reduce sedentary behavior using a full-day approach. An alternative strategy may be to target specific periods during the day and/or week. This study examined the day-of-the-week (Monday to Sunday) and time-of-the-day patterns (3-and 6-h periods) of sedentary behavior among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos adults. METHODS Participants ( n = 12,241) from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, a multisite community-based prospective cohort study of Hispanic/Latino adults, were studied. Sedentary behavior was assessed for 1 wk using a hip-mounted accelerometer through total sedentary time, sedentary time in bouts ≥60 min, and total number of sedentary breaks. The temporal patterns of sedentary behavior metrics were evaluated using linear mixed effect models accounting for the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos complex survey design. RESULTS There were statistically significant variations in temporal patterns across day-of-the-week and time-of-the-day periods for all three metrics ( P < 0.001). Adults were more sedentary on weekends than on weekdays and most sedentary on Sundays. The time-of-the-day patterns had a U-curve pattern wherein adults were most sedentary late at night, became less sedentary throughout the day, reached peak activeness around noon, then gradually became more sedentary into the evening. These patterns were largely robust across seasonality and most sociodemographic characteristics, including age, employment status, work shift schedule, acculturation, and field center. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that early mornings, evenings, and weekends were the more sedentary periods in this cohort of Hispanic/Latino adults, characterized by higher volumes of sedentary time, higher volumes of time in prolonged sedentary bouts, and fewer number of sedentary breaks than other time periods, highlighting important windows of opportunity to reduce sedentary behavior.

Abstract
Objective To examine the relationship between electronic wearable device (WD) use and physical activity (PA) levels among older adults in the US. Methods Data were pooled from 3310 older adults from the 2019 and 2020 Health Information National Trends Survey. The explanatory variable was WD use, and the outcomes were weekly PA levels, resistance training, and sedentary time. Logistic regression was conducted to investigate the association between WD use and the reported outcome variables. Separate logistic models were also fitted to explore the relationship between WD use and physical activity outcomes among a subgroup of older adults with chronic conditions. Results A total of 14.4% of older adults reported WD use. Older adults who use WD were more likely to meet national guidelines for weekly levels of PA (odds ratio (OR) 1.60, 95% confidence intervals (CI) (1.10, 2.32); p = 0.015) and resistance strength training (OR 1.54, 95% CI (1.14, 2.09); p = 0.005) when compared with their counterparts not using WD. After restricting the analysis to those with chronic conditions only, WD use was only associated with a higher level of weekly strength training (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.19, 2.38; p = 0.004). Conclusion WD use may be associated with increased physical activity among older adults, including those with chronic health conditions. Further studies are needed to examine the factors influencing the adoption and sustained use of WD in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic low back pain can lead to individual suffering, high medical expenditures, and impaired social well-being. Although the role of physical activity in pain management is well established, the underlying mechanisms of biological and clinical outcomes are unknown. This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a pain self-management intervention, Problem-Solving Pain to Enhance Living Well, which employs wearable activity tracking technology and nurse consultations for people with chronic low back pain. METHODS This one-arm longitudinal study recruited 40 adults aged 18-60 years with chronic low back pain. Over 12 weeks, participants watched 10 short video modules, wore activity trackers, and participated in nurse consultations every 2 weeks. At baseline and the 12-week follow-up, they completed study questionnaires, quantitative sensory testing, and blood sample collection. RESULTS Forty participants were recruited, and their mean age was 29.8. Thirty-two participants completed the survey questionnaire, quantitative sensory testing, Fitbit activity tracker, and bi-weekly nurse consultation, and 25 completed the evaluation of biological markers. The overall satisfaction with the Problem-Solving Pain to Enhance Living Well video modules, nurse consultations, and Fitbit in pain management was rated as excellent. No adverse events were reported. Between the baseline and 12-week follow-up, there was a significant decrease in pain intensity and interference and an increase in the warm detection threshold at the pain site. CONCLUSIONS Despite concerns about the participant burden due to multidimensional assessment and intensive education, the feasibility of the Problem-Solving Pain to Enhance Living Well intervention was favorable. Technology-based self-management interventions can offer personalized strategies by integrating pain phenotypes, genetic markers, and physical activity types affecting pain conditions. TRIAL REGISTRATION This pilot study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov [NCT03637998, August 20, 2018]. The first participant was enrolled on September 21, 2018.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research has explored the effectiveness of wearable activity trackers (wearables) for increasing child physical activity (PA) levels, but there have been mixed results. The use of theoretical frameworks and co-design techniques are recognised ways of increasing an intervention's acceptability and effectiveness. AIMS This study aims to use co-design workshops and an evidence-based theoretical framework (the Behaviour Change Wheel) to develop a family-based PA intervention using wearables. METHODS Three stages of intervention development outlined by the Behaviour Change Wheel were used. Co-design workshops with seven families (11 parents and 12 children) and seven PA experts were conducted where stakeholders discussed how to overcome previously identified barriers to families being active and using wearables. This resulted in the intervention's components being developed, with each component's mechanisms of action (e.g. intervention functions and behaviour change techniques) being retrospectively identified. RESULTS The 'Move & Connect' intervention was developed, which targets family PA and wearable use. The intervention takes a flexible approach and includes eight components, including wearable devices (Fitbit Alta HR), support resources, an introductory workshop, collective challenges, goal setting and reviewing, engagement prompts, social support and health-related resources (e.g. educational videos). The intervention incorporates six intervention functions targeting PA and wearable use: education, training, modelling, persuasion, incentivisation and environmental restructuring and 24 behaviour change techniques, including goal setting, social comparison, feedback on behaviour and graded task. CONCLUSIONS This is the first known study to use an evidence-based framework and co-design to develop a family-based wearable intervention. The identification of the intervention's mechanisms of action will prove useful when implementing and evaluating the 'Move & Connect' intervention and allow researchers to replicate its components.

Abstract
Objective Activity trackers appear cost-effective and acceptable intervention tools for promoting physical activity among older adults, particularly in the short-term. However, long-term studies focused on participants’ experiences continue to be scarce. This study evaluated participants’ experiences of a 12-month activity tracker-driven physical activity intervention. Methods Participants’ experiences were assessed qualitatively using open-ended questionnaire items ( n = 113) and semi-structured interviews conducted after the 12-month intervention ( n = 27). Quantitative items assessed the perceived ease-of-use and usefulness of the activity tracker during the intervention. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to examine changes in the perceived ease-of-use and usefulness over time. Results The 113 participants completing the 12-month intervention were on average 65.2 ( SD 1.0) years old and 81.4% women with 92.3% providing activity tracker data on at least 2 weeks per each intervention month. In the qualitative analysis, four main themes with 20 subthemes were identified: (a) burdens of participation, (b) affective attitudes of using the activity tracker, (c) perceived effects of using the activity tracker, and (d) no perceived behavioral effects. At 12 months, the participants found activity trackers mainly easy to use (mean 4.6, SD 0.6), reliable (mean 3.6, SD 1.2), motivating (mean 3.9, SD 1.0), and helpful in reducing sitting (mean 3.7, SD 1.0) with no changes observed during the intervention. Conclusions The participants’ experiences were highly varied suggesting that tailored intervention designs are likely to be required for effectively using activity trackers to promote long-term changes in daily activity among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sedentary behaviour (SB) affects cardiometabolic health and quality of life (QoL). We examine the effects of UPcomplish, a 12-week data-driven intervention, on SB, QoL and psychosocial determinants among office workers. METHODS Participants were recruited via judgement sampling. Five groups starting with time-lags of 7 weeks (n = 142, 96 females) received 14 feedback messages (FBMs) which were tailored to SB patterns, goals and hurdles. Participants received questionnaires at the beginning, middle and end of the intervention and wore an accelerometer measuring SB, operationalized as proportions (compositional data approach, CoDA) and summed squared sitting bouts (SSSB). We used linear mixed-effects models with random intercepts for weeks (between-subjects) and individuals (within-subjects). RESULTS UPcomplish did not reduce SB. Within-subjects compared to baseline, FBM #3 (βCoDA = 0.24, p < .001, 95% CI [0.15, 0.33]; βSSSB = 20.83, p < .001, 95% CI [13.90, 27.28]) and #4 (βCoDA = 0.20, p < .001, 95% CI [0.11, 0.29]; βSSSB = 24.80, p < .001, 95% CI [15.84, 33.76]) increased SB. QoL was unaffected. Perceived susceptibility was lower after FBMs #6 to #8 (βbetween = - 0.66, p = .04, 95% CI [- 1.03, - 0.30]; βwithin = - 0.75, p = .02, 95% CI [- 1.18, - 0.32]). Within-subjects, intentions to sit less were higher after FBMs #1 to #5 (1.14, p = .02, 95% CI [0.61, 1.66]). Improvements in determinants and in SB were not associated, nor were improvements in SB and in QoL. CONCLUSIONS Compared to VitaBit only, UPcomplish was not beneficial. Environmental restructuring might be superior, but detailed analyses of moderators of effectiveness are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescence is a critical age where steep declines in physical activity and increases in sedentary time occur. Promoting physical activity should therefore be a priority for short- and long-term health benefits. Wearable activity trackers in combination with supportive resources have the potential to influence adolescents' physical activity levels and sedentary behavior. Examining the pathways through which such interventions work can inform which mediators to target in future studies. OBJECTIVE The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of the Raising Awareness of Physical Activity (RAW-PA) intervention on potential mediators of behavior change after intervention, and whether these mediated the intervention effects on physical activity and sedentary time at 6-month follow-up. METHODS RAW-PA was a 12-week intervention, grounded in social cognitive theory and behavioral choice theory, aimed at increasing physical activity among inactive adolescents through combining a wearable activity tracker with digital resources delivered via a private Facebook group (n=159 complete cases). The targeted potential mediators were identified from previous studies conducted in adolescents and included self-efficacy, peer support, family support, teacher support, self-regulation strategies, barriers, and enjoyment. Outcomes included sedentary time as well as light- and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity. A series of mixed linear models were used to estimate intervention effects on physical activity and sedentary behavior at follow-up and on potential mediators after intervention and to test whether there were indirect effects of the intervention on physical activity and sedentary behavior via mediators. RESULTS Adolescents in the intervention group (n=75) engaged in higher sedentary time and lower light intensity at 6-month follow-up compared to the wait-list controls (n=84). There were no intervention effects for moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity. The intervention group perceived more barriers to physical activity than the wait-list control group at 6-month follow-up (mean adjusted difference=1.77; 95% CI 0.19-3.34; P=.03). However, indirect effects for each outcome were not statistically significant, indicating that perceived barriers to physical activity did not mediate intervention effects for physical activity or sedentary time. CONCLUSIONS RAW-PA did not beneficially impact hypothesized mediators in these inactive adolescents, despite strategies being designed to target them. This suggests that the lack of overall intervention effects on physical activity and sedentary time observed in the RAW-PA study could be due to the limited impact of the intervention on the targeted mediators. Future studies should consider different strategies to target theoretically informed potential mediators and identify intervention strategies that effectively target key mediators to improve physical activity among inactive adolescents. Finally, intervention effects according to level of wearable tracker use or level of engagement with the intervention should be explored. This may provide important insights for designing successful wearable activity tracker interventions. Abstract
Use of raw acceleration data and/or "novel" analytic approaches like machine learning for physical activity measurement will not be widely implemented if methods are not accessible to researchers. OBJECTIVE This scoping review characterizes the validation approach, accessibility and use of novel analytic techniques for classifying energy expenditure and/or physical activity intensity using raw or count-based accelerometer data. APPROACH Three databases were searched for articles published between January 2000 and February 2021. Use of each method was coded from a list of citing articles compiled from Google Scholar. Authors' provision of access to the model (e.g., by request, sample code) was recorded. MAIN RESULTS Studies (N=168) included adults (n=143), and/or children (n=38). Model use ranged from 0 to 27 uses/year (average 0.83) with 101 models that have never been used. Approximately half of uses occurred in a free-living setting (52%) and/or by other authors (56%). Over half of included articles (n=107) did not provide complete access to their model. Sixty-one articles provided access to their method by including equations, coefficients, cut-points, or decision trees in the paper (n=48) and/or by providing access to code (n=13). SIGNIFICANCE The proliferation of approaches for analyzing accelerometer data outpaces the use of these models in practice. As less than half of the developed models are made accessible, it is unsurprising that so many models are not used by other researchers. We encourage researchers to make their models available and accessible for better harmonization of methods and improved capabilities for device-based physical activity measurement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) has an impact on physical and mental health in neurotypical populations, and addressing these variables may improve the prevalent burden of anxiety in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Gamified mobile apps using behavior change techniques present a promising way of increasing PA and reducing sedentary time, thus reducing anxiety in adults with ASD. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a gamified and behavior change technique-based mobile app, PuzzleWalk, versus a commercially available app, Google Fit, on increasing PA and reducing sedentary time as an adjunct anxiety treatment for this population. METHODS A total of 24 adults with ASD were assigned to either the PuzzleWalk or Google Fit group for 5 weeks using a covariate-adaptive randomization design. PA and anxiety were assessed over 7 days at 3 different data collection periods (ie, baseline, intervention start, and intervention end) using triaxial accelerometers and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Group differences in outcome variables were assessed using repeated-measures analysis of covariance, adjusting for age, sex, and BMI. RESULTS The findings indicated that the PuzzleWalk group spent a significantly longer amount of time on app use compared with the Google Fit group (F2,38=5.07; P=.01; partial η2=0.21), whereas anxiety was unfavorably associated with increases in light PA and decreases in sedentary time after intervention (all P<.05). CONCLUSIONS Further research is needed to clarify the determinants of physical and mental health and their interrelationship in adults with ASD to identify the factors that facilitate the use and adoption of mobile health technologies in these individuals. Despite these mixed results, the small changes in PA or anxiety may be clinically significant for adults with ASD. Abstract
Background Digital interventions are interventions supported by digital tools or technologies, such as mobile apps, wearables, or web-based software. Digital interventions in the context of public health are specifically designed to promote and improve health. Recent reviews have shown that many digital interventions target physical activity promotion; however, it is unclear how such digital interventions are evaluated. Objective We aimed to investigate evaluation strategies in the context of digital interventions for physical activity promotion using a scoping review of published reviews. We focused on the target (ie, user outcomes or tool performance), methods (ie, tool data or self-reported data), and theoretical frameworks of the evaluation strategies. Methods A protocol for this study was preregistered and published. From among 300 reviews published up to March 19, 2021 in Medline, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases, 40 reviews (1 rapid, 9 scoping, and 30 systematic) were included in this scoping review. Two authors independently performed study selection and data coding. Consensus was reached by discussion. If applicable, data were coded quantitatively into predefined categories or qualitatively using definitions or author statements from the included reviews. Data were analyzed using either descriptive statistics, for quantitative data (relative frequencies out of all studies), or narrative synthesis focusing on common themes, for qualitative data. Results Most reviews that were included in our scoping review were published in the period from 2019 to 2021 and originated from Europe or Australia. Most primary studies cited in the reviews included adult populations in clinical or nonclinical settings, and focused on mobile apps or wearables for physical activity promotion. The evaluation target was a user outcome (efficacy, acceptability, usability, feasibility, or engagement) in 38 of the 40 reviews or tool performance in 24 of the 40 reviews. Evaluation methods relied upon objective tool data (in 35/40 reviews) or other data from self-reports or assessments (in 28/40 reviews). Evaluation frameworks based on behavior change theory, including goal setting, self-monitoring, feedback on behavior, and educational or motivational content, were mentioned in 22 out of 40 reviews. Behavior change theory was included in the development phases of digital interventions according to the findings of 20 out of 22 reviews. Conclusions The evaluation of digital interventions is a high priority according to the reviews included in this scoping review. Evaluations of digital interventions, including mobile apps or wearables for physical activity promotion, typically target user outcomes and rely upon objective tool data. Behavior change theory may provide useful guidance not only for development of digital interventions but also for the evaluation of user outcomes in the context of physical activity promotion. Future research should investigate factors that could improve the efficacy of digital interventions and the standardization of terminology and reporting in this field. Abstract
mHealth interventions can promote healthy movement behaviors (physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep). However, recent reviews include few studies from Asia, despite it being home to over 60% of the world population. The aim is to map the current evidence for mHealth interventions targeting movement behaviors in Asia. Six databases were searched up until August 2021. Included studies described an mHealth intervention targeting one or more movement behaviors, delivered in a country/territory in Asia, to a general population. A total of 3986 unique records were screened for eligibility in duplicate. Eighty studies with 1,413,652 participants were included. Most were randomized (38.8%) or quasi-experimental (27.5%) trials. Studies were from 17 countries/territories (out of 55); majority were high- (65.0%) or upper middle-income (28.7%). Physical activity was targeted most often (93.8%), few targeted sedentary behavior (7.5%), or sleep (8.8%). Most targeted one movement behavior (90.0%), and none targeted all three together. Interventions typically incorporated a single mHealth component (70.0%; app, pedometer, text messages, wearable) and were delivered remotely (66.3%). The average intervention length was 121.8 (SD 127.6) days. mHealth interventions in Asia have primarily targeted physical activity in high- and upper middle-income countries. There are few interventions targeting sedentary behavior or sleep, and no interventions in low-income countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital interventions (DIs) could support physical activity (PA) promotion, according to recent reviews. However, it remains unclear if and how DIs for PA promotion are evaluated; thus, it is unclear if they support behavior change in real-world settings. A mapping of evidence from published reviews is required to focus on the evaluation of DIs for PA promotion. OBJECTIVE The aim of our study is to investigate evaluation strategies for any outcome in the context of DIs for PA promotion by conducting a scoping review of published reviews. METHODS Our scoping review adheres to the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. The information sources include bibliographic databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL) and the bibliographies of the selected studies. The electronic search strategy was developed and conducted in collaboration with an experienced database specialist. The electronic search was conducted in English with no limits up to March 19, 2021, for sources with the terms digital intervention AND evaluation AND physical activity in titles or abstracts. After deduplication, 300 reviews selected from 4912 search results were assessed for eligibility by 2 authors working independently. The inclusion criteria were (1) healthy or clinical samples (population), (2) DIs for PA promotion (intervention), (3) comparisons to any other intervention or no intervention (comparison), (4) evaluation strategies (methods, results, or frameworks) for any outcome in the context of DIs for PA promotion (outcome), and (5) any published review (study type). According to the consensus reached during a discussion, 40 reviews met the inclusion criteria-36 from the electronic search and 4 from the manual search of the bibliographies of the 36 reviews. All reviews reported the evaluation strategies for any outcomes in the context of DIs for PA promotion in healthy or clinical samples. Data coding and the quality appraisal of systematic reviews are currently being performed independently by 2 authors. RESULTS Our scoping review includes data from 40 published reviews (1 rapid review, 9 scoping reviews, and 30 systematic reviews). The focus of data coding is on evaluation strategies in the context of DIs for PA promotion and on the critical appraisal of the included systematic reviews. The final consensus regarding all data is expected in early 2022. CONCLUSIONS Interventions for PA promotion that are supported by digital technologies require evaluation to ensure their efficacy in real-world settings. Our scoping review is needed because it addresses novel objectives that focus on such evaluations and are not answered in the published reviews identified in our search. The evaluation strategies addressing DIs for PA promotion will be mapped to synthesize the results that have been reported in published reviews so far. Abstract
BACKGROUND The popularity of consumer-wearable activity trackers has led the scientific community to conduct an increasing number of intervention studies integrating them to promote physical activity (PA) and to reduce sedentary behavior (SB) levels among school-aged children. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to estimate the effects of consumer-wearable activity tracker-based programs on daily objectively measured PA and SB among apparently healthy school-aged children, as well as to compare the influence of participants' and programs' characteristics. METHODS Eligibility criteria were: (1) participants: apparently healthy school-aged children (< 18 years old); (2) intervention: aimed to promote PA and/or to reduce SB incorporating consumer-wearable activity trackers; (3) comparator: baseline measurements and/or a control/traditional group; (4) outcomes: objectively measured daily PA and/or SB levels; (5) study design: pre-experimental, quasi-experimental, and true-experimental trials. Relevant studies were searched from eight databases up to December 2020, as well as from four alternative modes of searching. Based on the Cochrane Risk-of-bias tool 2, the risk of bias was assessed following four domains: (1) randomization process; (2) missing outcome data; (3) measurement of the outcomes; and (4) selection of the reported results. Based on a comprehensive systematic review, meta-analyses of the Cohen's standardized mean difference (d) and 95% confidence interval (CI) with a random-effects model were conducted to estimate the overall effects, as well as the within- and between-study subgroups analyses effects, of the programs on daily total steps, moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), total PA and SB. RESULTS Forty-four publications (i.e., 45 studies) were included in the systematic review (5,620 unique participants; mean age = 12.85 ± 2.84 years) and 40 publications (i.e., 41 studies) in the meta-analysis. Programs had a mean length of 11.78 ± 13.17 weeks and most used a waist-worn consumer-wearable activity tracker (77.78% waist-worn; 22.22% wrist-worn). Programs characteristics were: goal-setting strategies (64.06%); participants' logbooks (56.25%); counseling sessions (62.50%); reminders (28.13%); motivational strategies (42.19%); and exercise routine (17.19%). Results showed a statistically significant moderate favorable effect on daily total steps (d = 0.612, 95% CI 0.477-0.746), small favorable effect on daily MVPA (d = 0.220, 95% CI 0.134-0.307), trivial favorable effect on daily total PA (d = 0.151, 95% CI 0.038-0.264) and trivial unfavorable effect on daily SB (d = 0.172, 95% CI 0.039-0.305). Subgroups analyses showed a higher effect for daily total steps and daily MVPA levels in females and the physically inactive for daily total steps (p = 0.003-0.044). Programs with educational counseling and/or goal-setting strategies, as well as a greater number of strategies, were more effective for improving children's daily total steps, and wrist-worn activity trackers were more effective than waist-worn trackers for improving their daily MVPA levels (p = 0.001-0.021). CONCLUSIONS Consumer-wearable activity tracker-based programs seem to be effective in promoting school-aged children's daily total steps and MVPA levels, especially for females and those that are physically inactive. These programs should include specific goal-setting, educational counseling, and wrist-worn trackers as especially effective strategies. However, due to the certainty of evidence being from "low" to "moderate", future well-designed primary research studies about the topic are needed. PROSPERO CRD42020222363.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are prevalent nowadays, leading to anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, and other health problems. Due to the proliferation of mobile devices and the development of communication technologies, mobile apps have become a popular way to deliver sleep disorder therapy or manage sleep. This scoping review aims to conduct a systematic investigation of mobile apps and technologies supporting sleep, including the essential functions of sleep apps, how they are used to improve sleep and the facilitators of and barriers to using apps among patients and other stakeholders. We searched articles (2010 to 2022) from Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, and IEEE Xplore using the keyword sleep apps. In total, 1,650 peer-reviewed articles were screened, and 51 were selected for inclusion. The most frequently provided functions by the apps are sleep monitoring, measuring sleep, providing alarms, and recording sleep using a sleep diary. Several wearable devices have been used with mobile apps to record sleep duration and sleep problems. Facilitators and barriers to using apps were identified, along with the evidence-based design guidelines. Existing studies have proved the initial validation and efficiency of delivering sleep treatment by mobile apps; however, more research is needed to improve the performance of sleep apps and devise a way to utilize them as a therapy tool.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of the present review is to track the evolution of wearable IMUs from their use in supervised laboratory- and ambulatory-based settings to their application for long-term monitoring of human movement in unsupervised naturalistic settings. AREAS COVERED Four main emerging areas of application were identified and synthesized, namely, mobile health solutions (specifically, for the assessment of frailty, risk of falls, chronic neurological diseases, and for the monitoring and promotion of active living), occupational ergonomics, rehabilitation and telerehabilitation, and cognitive assessment. Findings from recent scientific literature in each of these areas was synthesized from an applied and/or clinical perspective with the purpose of providing clinical researchers and practitioners with practical guidance on contemporary uses of inertial sensors in applied clinical settings. EXPERT OPINION IMU-based wearable devices have undergone a rapid transition from use in laboratory-based clinical practice to unsupervised, applied settings. Successful use of wearable inertial sensing for assessing mobility, motor performance and movement disorders in applied settings will rely also on machine learning algorithms for managing the vast amounts of data generated by these sensors for extracting information that is both clinically relevant and interpretable by practitioners.

Abstract
Background Careful consideration and planning are required to establish “sufficient” evidence to ensure an investment in a larger, more well-powered behavioral intervention trial is worthwhile. In the behavioral sciences, this process typically occurs where smaller-scale studies inform larger-scale trials. Believing that one can do the same things and expect the same outcomes in a larger-scale trial that were done in a smaller-scale preliminary study (i.e., pilot/feasibility) is wishful thinking, yet common practice. Starting small makes sense, but small studies come with big decisions that can influence the usefulness of the evidence designed to inform decisions about moving forward with a larger-scale trial. The purpose of this commentary is to discuss what may constitute sufficient evidence for moving forward to a definitive trial. The discussion focuses on challenges often encountered when conducting pilot/feasibility studies, referred to as common (mis)steps, that can lead to inflated estimates of both feasibility and efficacy, and how the intentional design and execution of one or more, often small, pilot/feasibility studies can play a central role in developing an intervention that scales beyond a highly localized context. Main body Establishing sufficient evidence to support larger-scale, definitive trials, from smaller studies, is complicated. For any given behavioral intervention, the type and amount of evidence necessary to be deemed sufficient is inherently variable and can range anywhere from qualitative interviews of individuals representative of the target population to a small-scale randomized trial that mimics the anticipated larger-scale trial. Major challenges and common (mis)steps in the execution of pilot/feasibility studies discussed are those focused on selecting the right sample size, issues with scaling, adaptations and their influence on the preliminary feasibility and efficacy estimates observed, as well as the growing pains of progressing from small to large samples. Finally, funding and resource constraints for conducting informative pilot/feasibility study(ies) are discussed. Conclusion Sufficient evidence to scale will always remain in the eye of the beholder. An understanding of how to design informative small pilot/feasibility studies can assist in speeding up incremental science (where everything needs to be piloted) while slowing down premature scale-up (where any evidence is sufficient for scaling).

Abstract
Wearable activity trackers (wearables) embed numerous behaviour change techniques (BCTs) that have previously been shown to increase adult physical activity (PA). With few children and adolescents achieving PA guidelines, it is crucial to explore ways to increase their PA. This systematic review examined the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of wearables and their potential mechanisms of action for increasing PA in 5 to 19-year-olds. A systematic search of six databases was conducted, including data from the start date of each database to December 2019 (PROSPERO registration: CRD42020164506). Thirty-three studies were included. Most studies (70%) included only adolescents (10 to 19 years). There was some-but largely mixed-evidence that wearables increase steps and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity PA and reduce sedentary behaviour. There were no apparent differences in effectiveness based on the number of BCTs used and between studies using a wearable alone or as part of a multi-component intervention. Qualitative findings suggested wearables increased motivation to be physically active via self-monitoring, goal setting, feedback, and competition. However, children and adolescents reported technical difficulties and a novelty effect when using wearables, which may impact wearables' long-term use. More rigorous and long-term studies investigating the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of wearables in 5 to 19-year-olds are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been increasing interest in using wearable activity trackers to promote physical activity in youth. This study examined the short- and longer-term effects of a wearable activity tracker combined with digital behaviour change resources on the physical activity of adolescents attending schools in socio-economically disadvantaged areas. METHODS The Raising Awareness of Physical Activity (RAW-PA) Study was a 12-week, multicomponent intervention that combined a Fitbit Flex (and accompanying app), and online digital behaviour change resources and weekly challenges delivered via Facebook. RAW-PA was evaluated using a cluster-randomised controlled trial with 275 adolescents (50.2% female; 13.7 ± 0.4 years) from 18 Melbourne secondary schools (intervention n = 9; wait-list control group n = 9). The primary outcome was moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA), measured using hip-worn ActiGraph accelerometers. The secondary outcome was self-reported physical activity. Data were collected at baseline, 12-weeks (immediately post-intervention), and 6-months post-intervention (follow-up). Multilevel models were used to determine the effects of the intervention on daily MVPA over time, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS No significant differences were observed between intervention and wait-list control adolescents' device-assessed MVPA immediately post-intervention. At 6-months post-intervention, adolescents in the intervention group engaged in 5 min (95% CI: - 9.1 to - 1.0) less MVPA per day than those in the wait-list control group. Males in the intervention group engaged in 11 min (95% CI: - 17.6 to - 4.5) less MVPA than males in the wait-list control group at 6-months post-intervention. No significant differences were observed for females at either time point. For self-reported physical activity, no significant effects were found at 12-weeks and 6-months post-intervention. CONCLUSIONS Combining a wearable activity tracker with digital behaviour change resources and weekly challenges did not increase inactive adolescents' accelerometer-derived and self-reported physical activity levels immediately post-intervention. This contrasts previous research that has suggested wearable activity tracker may increase youth physical activity levels in the short-term. Lower engagement in MVPA 6-months post-intervention was observed for males but not for females, though it is unclear why this finding was observed. The results suggest wearable activity trackers, in combination with supporting materials, may not be effective for increasing physical activity levels in adolescents.
