Utilizations of agricultural waste as adsorbent for the removal of contaminants: A review

Imidacloprid removal by modified graphitic biochar with Fe/Zn bimetallic oxides

Coping with the critical challenge of imidacloprid (IMI) contamination in sewage treatment and farmland drainage purification, this study presents a pioneering development of an advanced modified graphitic white melon seed shells biochar (Fe/Zn@WBC). The Fe/Zn@WBC demonstrates a substantial enhancement in adsorption efficiency for IMI, achieving a remarkable removal rate of 87.69% within 30 min and a significantly higher initial adsorption rate parameter h = 4.176 mg g-1·min-1. This significant improvement outperforms WBC (12.22%, h = 0.115 mg g-1·min-1) and highlights the influence of optimized adsorption conditions at 900 °C and the graphitization degree resulting from Fe/Zn bimetallic oxide modification. Characterization analysis and batch sorption experiments including kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and pH factors illustrate that chemical adsorption is the main type of adsorption mechanism responsible for this superior ability to remove IMI through pore filling, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction, electrostatics interaction, π-π interactions as well as complexation processes. Furthermore, we demonstrate exceptional stability of Fe/Zn@WBC across a broad pH range (pH = 3-11), co-existing ions presence along with humic acid under various real water conditions while maintaining high removal efficiency. This study presents an advanced biochar adsorbent, Fe/Zn@WBC, with efficient adsorption capacity and easy preparation. Through three regeneration cycles via pyrolysis method, it demonstrates excellent pyrolysis regeneration capabilities with an average removal efficiency of 92.02%. The magnetic properties enable rapid separation facilitated by magnetic analysis. By elucidating the efficacy and mechanistic foundations of Fe/Zn@WBC, this research significantly contributes to the field of environmental remediation by providing a scalable solution for IMI removal and enhancing scientific understanding of bimetallic oxides-hydrophilic organic pollutant interactions.

Characterization and Implementation of Cocoa Pod Husk as a Reinforcing Agent to Obtain Thermoplastic Starches and Bio-Based Composite Materials

When the cocoa pod husk (CPH) is used and processed, two types of flour were obtained and can be differentiated by particle size, fine flour (FFCH), and coarse flour (CFCH) and can be used as a possible reinforcement for the development of bio-based composite materials. Each flour was obtained from chopping, drying by forced convection, milling by blades, and sieving using the 100 mesh/bottom according to the Tyler series. Their physicochemical, thermal, and structural characterization made it possible to identify the lower presence of lignin and higher proportions of cellulose and pectin in FFCH. Based on the properties identified in FFCH, it was included in the processing of thermoplastic starch (TPS) from the plantain pulp (Musa paradisiaca) and its respective bio-based composite material using plantain peel short fiber (PPSF) as a reinforcing agent using the following sequence of processing techniques: extrusion, internal mixing, and compression molding. The influence of FFCH contributed to the increase in ultimate tensile strength (7.59 MPa) and higher matrix-reinforcement interaction when obtaining the freshly processed composite material (day 0) when compared to the bio-based composite material with higher FCP content (30%) in the absence of FFCH. As for the disadvantages of FFCH, reduced thermal stability (323.57 to 300.47 °C) and losses in ultimate tensile strength (0.73 MPa) and modulus of elasticity (142.53 to 26.17 MPa) during storage progress were identified. In the case of TPS, the strengthening action of FFCH was not evident. Finally, the use of CFCH was not considered for the elaboration of the bio-based composite material because it reached a higher lignin content than FFCH, which was expected to decrease its affinity with the TPS matrix, resulting in lower mechanical properties in the material.

Silica@poly(chitosan-N-isopropylacrylamide-methacrylic acid) microgels: Extraction of palladium (II) ions and in situ formation of palladium nanoparticles for pollutant reduction

Most of the transition metal ions and organic dyes are toxic in nature. Therefore, their removal from water is imperative for human health. For this purpose, various types of systems have been developed to tackle either transition metal ions or organic dyes individually. A core-shell microgel system is introduced which is capable of effectively removing both types (toxic organic dyes and transition metal ions) of pollutants. A long-rod-shaped silica@poly(chitosan-N-isopropylacrylamide-methacrylic acid) S@P(CS-NIPAM-MAA) S@P(CNM) core-shell microgel system was developed by free radical precipitation polymerization method (FRPPM). S@P(CNM) was utilized as an adsorbent for extracting palladium (II) (Pd (II)) ions from water under different concentrations of S@P(CNM), several agitation times, palladium (II) ion content, and pH levels. The adsorption data of Pd (II) ions on S@P(CNM) was evaluated by various adsorption isotherms. The kinetic study was investigated by employing pseudo-2nd order (Ps2O), Elovich model (ElM), intra-particle diffusion (IPDM), and pseudo-1st order (Ps1O). Additionally, palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were generated via in-situ reduction of adsorbed Pd (II) ions within the P(CNM) shell region of S@P(CNM). The resulting Pd NPs loaded S@P(CNM) exhibited the capability to reduce organic pollutants like methyl orange (MeO), 4-nitrophenol (4NiP), methylene blue (MeB), and Rhodamine B (RhB) from aqueous medium. 0.766 min-1, 0.433 min-1, 0.682 min-1, and 1.140 min-1 were the values of pseudo 1st order rate constant (kobs) for catalytic reduction of MeB, 4NiP, MeO, and RhB respectively. The S@Pd-P(CNM) system exhibits significant catalytic potential for various organic transformations.

The Potential Valorization of Corn Stalks by Alkaline Sequential Fractionation to Obtain Papermaking Fibers, Hemicelluloses, and Lignin-A Comprehensive Mass Balance Approach

The current study deals with an examination of strategies for the sequential treatment of corn stalks (CSs) in an integrated manner aiming to obtain papermaking fibers and to recover both lignin and hemicelluloses (HCs). Several pathways of valorization were experimentally trialed, focusing on getting information from mass balance analysis in an attempt to reveal the potential outcomes in terms of pulp yield, chemical composition, and papermaking properties such as tensile and burst strength. The raw lignin amounts and purity as well as separated hemicelluloses were also characterized. In this work, pulp yields in the range of 44-50% were obtained from CSs, while lignin and hemicelluloses yielded maximum values of 10 g/100 g of CS and 6.2 g/100 g of CS, respectively. Other findings of mass balance analysis evidenced that besides the papermaking pulp, the lignin and HCs also have interesting output values. The recovered lignin yield values were shown to be less than 50% in general, meaning that even if 67 to 90% of it is removed from CSs, only about half is recovered. The removal rates of hemicelluloses were found to be in the range of approx. 30 to 60%. About 15 to 25% of the original HCs could be recovered, and polysaccharides-based products with 67 to 75% xylan content could be obtained. Some key opinions were developed regarding how the mass balance could turn as a result of the chosen CS valorization set-up. The determined antioxidant activity showed that both lignin and hemicelluloses had interesting values for IC50.

Recent progress on tobacco wastes-derived adsorbents for the remediation of aquatic pollutants: A review

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a significant crop widely planted worldwide. Its leaves have a special economical value as raw materials for the cigarette industry. During tobacco harvesting and cigarette production, a large amount of wastes that could not be used in the cigarette industry are generated such as tobacco stems, stalks, and low-grade leaves. The utilization of such agro-industrial wastes in raw or carbonaceous form as adsorbents for wastewater treatment is an economic and eco-friendly step for elimination of such waste. Tobacco waste can be directly applied as adsorbents for aquatic pollutants owing to its favorable lignocellulosic composition and functional groups enriched structure. Moreover, this waste has high volatile matters and thus can be an efficient precursor for high surface area carbonaceous adsorbents including biochar and activated carbon with high removal performance. This article is a recent and comprehensive review about the preparation of adsorbents (raw, biochar and activated carbon) from different tobacco wastes (stems, stalks, leaves, etc.) along with its characterization and regeneration. The adsorption behavior of different aquatic adsorbates on these adsorbents under specific conditions along with the isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic, and mechanism studies is also considered. The highest uptakes for most tested pollutants were 399.0, 195.2, and 173.0 mg/g for lead, chromium, and cadmium, 517.5 mg/g for methylene blue, and 210.66 and 1.602 mg/g for phosphate and chlorpyrifos. Significant findings and future ideas for the studied adsorbate/adsorbent systems are finally given.

Silk adsorbent for green and efficient removal of methylene blue from wastewater

Silk, a naturally occurring proteinaceous biopolymer with remarkable adsorbent properties, has been employed in wastewater remediation. The sericin coating, functioning as a protective barrier and rendering fibres impervious to external chemical attacks and preventing their involvement in chemical reactions, was removed using a greener alternative to harness silk as an effective adsorbent. Subsequently, the silk fibres underwent intermittent microwave degumming to extract sericin, and the fibres were utilized for the adsorptive exclusion of the hazardous methylene blue (MB) dye. The comparative batch adsorption studies (kinetics and isotherm) between raw silk fibres and degummed fibres were performed to comprehend the role of degumming on fibre adsorption efficacy by varying operating conditions, including pH, time of contact, initial adsorbate and dosage of adsorbent. The paramount adsorption capacity of raw silk was observed to be 137.08 mg g-1 and 179.14 mg g-1 for degummed silk when adsorbate conc. was 100 ppm. The kinetics of adsorption obeyed pseudo-second order suggesting that the rate controlling step is chemisorptions, and data demonstrated greatest fit to Langmuir isotherm exhibiting mono-layer adsorption. Further, biodegradability was studied by mimicking natural environmental conditions where the raw and degummed silk fibres demonstrated 51% and 53% degradation, respectively, after 180 days. Overall, based on obtained results, this study highlights the suitability of silk as an effective as well as sustainable adsorbent for the exclusion of toxic methylene blue dye from wastewater.

Ozone degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride enhanced by magnetic nanofluid composed of Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were added into the aqueous phase to form nanofluid systems, in which ozone was used for the oxidation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in the solution. The nanomaterials were characterized using SEM, XRD, EDS, and FT-IR. The effects of nanoparticles size, addition ratio, and number of cycles on the process of ozone oxidation of TC were investigated. The results indicated that the addition ratio of nanoparticles have a certain impact on the performance of ozone oxidation. When the addition ratio increased from 0.02% to 0.4%, the removal rate of TC in the solution was improved significantly. Besides, the particle size of nanoparticles showed a greater impact on ozone oxidation. At the nanoscale, Fe3O4 nanoparticles exhibited significant strengthening properties, which is attributed to the construction of nanofluid systems. The removal rate of TC in solution decreased obviously with the increase of nanoparticles size. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles with particle size of 20 nm showed the most significant effect on TC degradation. The recycling experiment showed that magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles had stable regeneration performance. For three times of recycling treatment, with a Fe3O4 addition ratio of 0.4%, the removal rate of TC reached 98.7%, 97.21%, and 96%, respectively. Based on the characterization results, the strengthening mechanism was analyzed. The experimental results indicated that construction of nanofluids systems could improve the utilization rate of ozone, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were reusable and easily recyclable.

Comprehensive assessment of carbon-, biomaterial- and inorganic-based adsorbents for the removal of the most hazardous heavy metal ions from wastewater

Owing to the high cost of recycling waste, underdeveloped countries discharge industrial, agricultural, and anthropogenic effluents without pretreatment. As a result, pollutant-loaded waste enters water bodies. Among the diverse toxic contaminants, heavy metal ions are the most detrimental because of their chronic toxicity, non-degradability, prevalence, and bioaccumulation. The growing shortage of water resources demands the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater. Three SDGs of the sustainability agenda of the United Nations appeal for clean water to protect life beneath water and on land depending on the water sources. Therefore, efficient environmentally friendly approaches for wastewater treatment are urgently required. In this regard, several methods have been developed for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater, including adsorption as the most widely used method owing to its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable nature. The present review discusses the progress in the preparation and application of various adsorbents based on carbon, micro-organisms, agricultural waste and inorganic materials for the extraction of toxic metal ions such as Pb2+, Cr6+, As3+, As5+, Hg2+ and Cd2+. Herein, we provide information on the role of the homogeneity and heterogeneity of adsorbents, kinetics of the adsorption of an adsorbate on the surface of an adsorbent, insights into adsorption reaction pathways, the mechanism of the sorption process, and the uptake of solutes from solution. The present review will be useful for researchers working on environmental protection and clean environment.

Insights into the management of food waste in developing countries: with special reference to India

Up to one third of the food that is purposely grown for human sustenance is wasted and never consumed, with adverse consequences for the environment and socio-economic aspects. In India, managing food waste is a significant environmental concern. Food waste output is increasing in Indian cities and towns as a result of the country's urban expansion, modernization, and population growth. Poor management of food waste can have negative consequences for the environment and pose a risk to the public's health issues. This review focuses on the current challenges, management strategies, and future perspectives of food waste management in India. The efficient management of food waste involves a comprehensive study regarding the characterization of food waste and improved waste management methods. In addition, the government policies and rules for managing food waste that is in effect in India are covered in this review.

Insights into kinetics, thermodynamics, and mechanisms of chemically activated sunflower stem biochar for removal of phenol and bisphenol-A from wastewater

This study synthesized a highly efficient KOH-treated sunflower stem activated carbon (KOH-SSAC) using a two-step pyrolysis process and chemical activation using KOH. The resulting material exhibited exceptional properties, such as a high specific surface area (452 m2/g) and excellent adsorption capacities for phenol (333.03 mg/g) and bisphenol A (BPA) (365.81 mg/g). The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, benefiting from the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and stacking interactions. Comparative analysis also showed that KOH-SSAC performed approximately twice as well as sunflower stem biochar (SSB), indicating its potential for water treatment and pollutant removal applications. The study suggests the exploration of optimization strategies to further enhance the efficiency of KOH-SSAC in large-scale scenarios. These findings contribute to the development of improved materials for efficient water treatment and pollution control.

Microbial production and applications of β-glucosidase-A review

β-Glucosidase exists in all areas of living organisms, and microbial β-glucosidase has become the main source of its production because of its unique physicochemical properties and the advantages of high-yield production by fermentation. With the rise of the green circular economy, the production of enzymes through the fermentation of waste as the substrate has become a popular trend. Lignocellulosic biomass is an easily accessible and sustainable feedstock that exists in nature, and the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass requires the involvement of β-glucosidase. This review proposes ways to improve β-glucosidase yield and catalytic efficiency. Optimization of growth conditions and purification strategies of enzymes can increase enzyme yield, and enzyme immobilization, genetic engineering, protein engineering, and whole-cell catalysis provide solutions to enhance the catalytic efficiency and activity of β-glucosidase. Besides, the diversified industrial applications, challenges and prospects of β-glucosidase are also described.

Removal of cationic dyes from aqueous solution using polyacrylic acid modified hemp stem

Water pollution caused by dyes is a pressing environmental challenge due to their persistence and difficulty in degradation. Herein, an anionic adsorbent (HS-PAANa) was synthesized by grafting polyacrylic acid (PAA) onto the agricultural waste-hemp stem (HS). The obtained HS-PAANa adsorbent exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics, high adsorption capacity, and a favorable preference for cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV). The experimental data fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, demonstrating the efficiency of HS-PAANa in dye removal. Notably, the optimal adsorption capacities of HS-PAANa for MB and CV were found to be 1296.65 mg/g and 1451.43 mg/g, respectively. In the cationic/anionic dyes (MB/MO) binary systems, HS-PAANa exhibited enhanced selective adsorption of cationic dyes (MB), indicating its potential for targeted removal of specific dyes from mixed solutions. Moreover, HS-PAANa adsorption shows an excellent recyclability, after five cycles, HS-PAANa still maintained MB and CV removal rates of 93.85% and 95.08%, respectively. Therefore, the bioadsorbent HS-PAANa exhibits high potential as a highly efficient adsorbent for the effective treatment of cationic pollutants in wastewater.

Unveiling the mechanistic aspects of methylene blue adsorption onto a novel phosphate-decorated coconut fiber lignin

The aim of this work was to evaluate the adsorptive performance of the phosphorylated coconut fiber lignin (PCFL) obtained through an innovative biorefinery process for removing methylene blue (MB). PCFL was obtained using coconut fiber mixed with 85 % wt. H3PO4 at 70 °C for 1 h. Milled wood lignin (MWL) and PCFL were characterized by FTIR, CP-MAS 31P NMR, phosphorous and hydroxyl contents, pHPZC, and BET analyses. The batch adsorption tests evaluated the effects of the biosorbent (0.25 - 4 g L-1) and adsorbate dosages (2.5 - 7.5 mg L-1), contact time (0 - 60 min), pH (4 - 8), ionic strength (0.001 - 0.1 mol L-1) and temperature (298.15 - 318.15 K) on MB adsorption. Kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic modeling were used. The phosphorous content on PCFL was 2.5 times higher than that of MWL. PCFL presented an enhanced adsorptive performance for removing MB, which was spontaneous (ΔG0 < 0), endothermic (ΔH0 > 0), with affinity between the biosorbent and adsorbate (ΔS0 > 0), and driven by physisorption (Ea > 40 kJ mol-1). The adsorptive performance of PCFL was enhanced due to the grafting of new active sites by using an innovative biorefinery process, showing its potential to be used for textile effluent remediation.

Effects of partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic manure on the activity of enzyme and soil bacterial communities in the mountain red soil

Introduction

The partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic manure takes on a critical significance to enhancing soil quality and boosting sustainable agricultural development. However, rare research has studied the effects of partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic manure on soil bacterial community diversity and enzyme activity in maize field in the mountain red soil region of Yunnan.

Methods

In this study, four treatments were set up in which chemical fertilizer (the application rates of N, P2O5 and K2O were 240, 75 and 75 kg·ha-1, respectively) was substituted by 10% (M10), 20% (M20), 30% (M30) and 40% (M40) of organic manure with equal nitrogen, as well as two control treatments of single application of chemical fertilizer (M0) and no fertilization (CK). The maize (Zea mays L.) crop was sown as a test crop in May 2018. The effects of partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic manure on soil physicochemical properties, soil bacterial community diversity and enzyme activity were studied.

Results

The activities of Cellulase (CBH), Invertase (INV) and β-glucosidase (BG) increased with the increase of organic manure substitution ratio. The activities of β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG), Urease (URE), and leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) also had the same trend, but the highest activities were 159.92 mg·g-1·h-1, 66.82 mg·g-1·h-1 and 143.90 mg·g-1·h-1 at 30% substitution ratio. Compared with CK and M0 treatments, Shannon index increased notably by 82.91%-116.74% and 92.42%-128.01%, respectively, at the organic manure substitution ratio ranging from 10% to 40%. Chao1 and ACE index increased significantly at the organic manure substitution ratio ranging from 10% to 30%. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in all treatments, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria decreased as the organic manure substitution ratio increased. Redundancy analysis showed that microbial biomass C was the main factor affecting the bacterial community composition under partial replacement of chemical fertilizer treatment, while Actinobacteria was the main factor affecting the enzyme activity. In addition, the maize yield of M30 and M40 treatments was significantly higher than that of CK and M0-M20 treatments, and the yield of M30 treatment was the highest, reaching 7652.89 kg·ha-1.

Conclusion

Therefore, the partial substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic manure can improve soil biological characteristics, while increasing bacterial community diversity and soil enzyme activity. Therefore, a thirty percent organic manure substitution was determined as the optimal substitution ratio for maize farmland in the mountain red soil area of Yunnan, China.

Effective assessment of biopolymer-based multifunctional sorbents for the remediation of environmentally hazardous contaminants from aqueous solutions

Persistent contaminants in wastewater effluent pose a significant threat to aquatic life and are one of the most significant environmental concerns of our time. Although there are a variety of traditional methods available in wastewater treatment, including adsorption, coagulation, flocculation, ion exchange, membrane filtration, co-precipitation and solvent extraction, none of these have been found to be significantly cost-effective in removing toxic pollutants from the water environment. The upfront costs of these treatment methods are extremely high, and they require the use of harmful synthetic chemicals. For this reason, the development of new technologies for the treatment and recycling of wastewater is an absolute necessity. Our way of life can be made more sustainable by the synthesis of adsorbents based on biomass, making the process less harmful to the environment. Biopolymers offer a sustainable alternative to synthetic polymers, which are manufactured by joining monomer units through covalent bonding. This review presents a detailed classification of biopolymers such as pectin, alginate, chitosan, lignin, cellulose, chitin, carrageen, certain proteins, and other microbial biomass compounds and composites, with a focus on their sources, methods of synthesis, and prospective applications in wastewater treatment. A concise summary of the extensive body of knowledge on the fate of biopolymers after adsorption is also provided. Finally, consideration is given to open questions about future developments leading to environmentally friendly and economically beneficial applications of biopolymers.

Bioinspired Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles for the Remediation of Toxic Pollutants and Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

This research presents a novel and environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of multifunctional nanobiocomposites for the efficient removal of toxic heavy metal and dye, as well as the disinfection of wastewater microorganisms. The nanobiocomposites (KAC-CS-AgNPs) were prepared by incorporating photochemically generated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within a chitosan (CS)-modified, high-surface-area activated carbon derived from kenaf (KAC), using a unique self-activation method. The even distribution of AgNPs was visible in the scanning electron microscopy images and a Fourier transform infra red study demonstrated major absorption peaks. The experimental results revealed that KA-CS-AgNPs exhibited exceptional adsorption efficiency for copper (Cu²⁺), lead (Pb²⁺), and Congo Red dye (CR), and showed potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The maximum adsorption capacity (mg g^-1) of KAC-CS-AgNPs was 71.5 for Cu²⁺, 72.3 for Pb²⁺, and 75.9 for CR, and the adsorption phenomena followed on the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models and the second-order kinetic model (R² > 0.99). KAC-CS-AgNPs also exhibited excellent reusability of up to four consecutive cycles with minor losses in adsorption ability. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The bacterial inactivation tests demonstrated that KAC-CS-AgNPs had a strong bactericidal effect on both E. coli and S. aureus, with MIC calculated for E. coli and S. aureus as 32 µg mL^-1 and 44 µg mL^-1, respectively. The synthesized bioinspired nanocomposite KAC-CS-AgNPs could be an innovative solution for effective and sustainable wastewater treatment and has great potential for commercial applications.

New chitosan-biochar composite derived from agricultural waste for removing sulfamethoxazole antibiotics in water

This study aims to develop a new chitosan-biochar composite derived from agricultural waste for removing sulfamethoxazole (SMX) antibiotics in water. Biochar was prepared from orange peel (OB) and spent coffee grounds (SCB). To fabricate chitosan-biochar composites, chitosan and biochar were crosslinked with glutaraldehyde. Results showed that pH, adsorbent dosage, time, temperature, and initial concentrations have a significant impact on the SMX adsorption. The adsorption data was better described by Langmuir (with good regression) than Freundlich model. The highest adsorption capacity (Q_max) of SMX on OB, SCB, CTS-OB, and CTS-SCB were 3.49, 7.65, 7.24, and 14.73 mg/g, respectively. The Freundlich constant (K_F) values for adsorption capacity were 1.66, 1.91, 2.57, and 5.57 (mg^1-nLⁿ/g), respectively, for OB, SCB, CTS-OB, and CTS-SCB. Ion exchange, π bonding, hydrogen bonding and pore filling, were proposed as dominant mechanisms of SMX removal process.

Valorization of soybean pulp for sustainable α-ketoisocaproate production using engineered Bacillus subtilis whole-cell biocatalyst

The disposal of soybean pulp (okara) (∼14 M tons annually) represents a global concern. α-ketoisocaproate (KIC) is an intrinsic l-leucine metabolite boosting mammalian muscle growth and has great potential in animal husbandry. However, the use of pure l-leucine (5000 USD/kg) for KIC (22 USD/kg) bioproduction is cost-prohibitive in practice, while okara rich in l-leucine (10%) could serve as an economical alternative. Following the concept of a circular bioeconomy, we managed to develop a cost-efficient platform to valorize okara into KIC. In this study, proteolytic Bacillus subtilis strain 168 capable of utilizing okara as a comprehensive substrate was employed as the whole-cell biocatalyst for KIC bioproduction. First, we elucidated the function of genes involved in KIC downstream metabolism in strain 168, including those encoding 2-oxoisovalerate dehydrogenase (bkdAA), 2-oxoisovalerate decarboxylase (bkdAB), enoyl-CoA hydratase (fadB), and bifunctional enoyl-CoA hydratase/3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (fadN). Among those KIC downstream metabolizing mutants of strain 168, the 2-oxoisovalerate decarboxylase gene knockout strain (ΔbkdAB) was found to have a better accumulation of KIC. To further improve the KIC yield, a soluble l-amino acid deaminase (LAAD) from Proteus vulgaris was heterologously expressed in the ΔbkdAB strain and a ∼50% conversion of total l-leucine contained in okara was catalyzed into KIC, along with a ∼50% reduction of CO₂ emission compared to the wild-type cultures. Altogether, this renovated biocatalytic system provides an alternative platform to valorize okara for producing value-added chemicals in an eco-friendly manner.

Silica-derived materials from agro-industrial waste biomass: Characterization and comparative studies

The management and final disposal of agro-industrial wastes are one of the main environmental problems. Due to the presence of silica in some agricultural by-products, it is possible to convert waste into materials with advanced properties. This contribution was aimed to extract and characterize silica materials from various feedstocks including sugarcane bagasse (SCB), corn stalk (CS), and rice husk (RH). Silica yields of 17.91%, 9.39%, and 3.25% were obtained for RH, CS, and SCB. On the other hand, the textural properties show that the siliceous materials exhibited mesoporous structures, with high silica composition in the materials due to the formation of crystalline SiO₂ for SCB and CS and amorphous for RH. XPS spectra demonstrate the presence of Si⁴⁺ species in RH, and Si³⁺/Si⁴⁺ tetrahedra in SCB and CS.

Removal of heavy metals from binary and multicomponent adsorption systems using various adsorbents - a systematic review

The ecosystem and human health are both significantly affected by the occurrence of potentially harmful heavy metals in the aquatic environment. In general, wastewater comprises an array of heavy metals, and the existence of other competing heavy metal ions might affect the adsorptive elimination of one heavy metal ion. Therefore, to fully comprehend the adsorbent's efficiency and practical applications, the abatement of heavy metals in multicomponent systems is important. In the current study, the multicomponent adsorption of heavy metals from different complex mixtures, such as binary, ternary, quaternary, and quinary solutions, utilizing various adsorbents are reviewed in detail. According to the systematic review, the adsorbents made from locally and naturally occurring materials, such as biomass, feedstocks, and industrial and agricultural waste, are effective and promising in removing heavy metals from complex water systems. The systematic study further discovered that numerous studies evaluate the adsorption characteristics of an adsorbent in a multicomponent system using various important independent adsorption parameters. These independent adsorption parameters include reaction time, solution pH, agitation speed, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentration, ionic strength as well as reaction temperature, which were found to significantly affect the multicomponent sorption of heavy metals. Furthermore, through the application of the multicomponent adsorption isotherms, the competitive heavy metals sorption mechanisms were identified and characterized by three primary kinds of interactive effects including synergism, antagonism, and non-interaction. Despite the enormous amount of research and extensive data on the capability of different adsorbents, several significant drawbacks hinder adsorbents from being used practically and economically to remove heavy metal ions from multicomponent systems. As a result, the current systematic review provides insights and perspectives for further studies through the thorough and reliable analysis of the relevant literature on heavy metals removal from multicomponent systems.

Valorization of Food Waste to Produce Value-Added Products Based on Its Bioactive Compounds

The rapid growth of the global population and changes in lifestyle have led to a significant increase in food waste from various industrial, agricultural, and household sources. Nearly one-third of the food produced annually is wasted, resulting in severe resource depletion. Food waste contains rich organic matter, which, if not managed properly, can pose a serious threat to the environment and human health, making the proper disposal of food waste an urgent global issue. However, various types of food waste, such as waste from fruit, vegetables, grains, and other food production and processing, contain important bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, dietary fiber, proteins, lipids, vitamins, organic acids, and minerals, some of which are found in greater quantities in the discarded parts than in the parts accepted by the market. These bioactive compounds offer the potential to convert food waste into value-added products, and fields including nutritional foods, bioplastics, bioenergy, biosurfactants, biofertilizers, and single cell proteins have welcomed food waste as a novel source. This review reveals the latest insights into the various sources of food waste and the potential of utilizing bioactive compounds to convert it into value-added products, thus enhancing people’s confidence in better utilizing and managing food waste.

Removal of COD and color from textile industrial wastewater using wheat straw activated carbon: an application of response surface and artificial neural network modeling

A novel approach has been undertaken wherein chemically modified wheat straw activated carbon (WSAC) as adsorbent is developed, characterized, and examined for the removal of COD and color from the cotton dyeing industry effluent. Thirty experimental runs are designed for batch reactor study using the central composite method (CCM) for optimizing process parameters, namely biochar dose, time of contact, pH, and temperature, for examining the effect on COD and color-removing efficiency of WSAC. The experimental data have been modeled using the machine learning approaches such as polynomial quadratic regression and artificial neural networks (ANN). The determined optimum conditions are pH: 7.18, time of contact: 85.229 min, adsorbent dose: 2.045 g/l, and temperature: 40.885 °C, at which the COD and color removal efficiency is 90.92 and 94.48%, respectively. The nonlinear pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model shows good coefficient of determination (R² ~ 1) values. The maximum adsorption capacity for COD and color by WSAC is at the pH of 7, the temperature of 40 °C, adsorbent dose of 2 g/l is obtained at the contact time of 80 min is 434.78 mg/g and 331.55 PCU/g, respectively. The COD removal and decolorization is more than 70% in the first 20 min of the experiment. The primary adsorption mechanism involves hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, n-π interactions, and cation exchange. Finally, the adsorbent is environmentally benign and cost-effective, costing 16.66% less than commercially available carbon. The result of the study indicates that WSAC is a prominent solution for treating textile effluent. The study is beneficial in reducing the pollutants from textile effluents and increasing the reuse of treated effluent in the textile industries.

Waste to catalyst: Role of agricultural waste in water and wastewater treatment

Presently, owing to the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization activities, a huge quantity of wastewater is generated that contain toxic chemical and heavy metals, imposing higher environmental jeopardies and affecting the life of living well-being and the economy of the counties, if not treated appropriately. Subsequently, the advancement in sustainable cost-effective wastewater treatment technology has attracted more attention from policymakers, legislators, and scientific communities. Therefore, the current review intends to highlight the recent development and applications of biochars and/or green nanoparticles (NPs) produced from agricultural waste via green routes in removing the refractory pollutants from water and wastewater. This review also highlights the contemporary application and mechanism of biochar-supported advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of organic pollutants in water and wastewater. Although, the fabrication and application of agriculture waste-derived biochar and NPs are considered a greener approach, nevertheless, before scaling up production and application, its toxicological and life-cycle challenges must be taken into account. Furthermore, future efforts should be carried out towards process engineering to enhance the performance of green catalysts to improve the economy of the process.

Adsorptive removal of antibiotic pollutants from wastewater using biomass/biochar-based adsorbents

This study explores adsorptive removal measures to shed light on current water treatment innovations for kinetic/isotherm models and their applications to antibiotic pollutants using a broad range of biomass-based adsorbents. The structure, classifications, sources, distribution, and different techniques for the remediation of antibiotics are discussed. Unlike previous studies, a wide range of adsorbents are covered and adsorption of comprehensive classes of antibiotics onto biomass/biochar-based adsorbents are categorized as β-lactam, fluoroquinolone, sulfonamide, tetracycline, macrolides, chloramphenicol, antiseptic additives, glycosamides, reductase inhibitors, and multiple antibiotic systems. This allows for an assessment of their performance and an understanding of current research breakthroughs in applying various adsorbent materials for antibiotic removal. Distinct from other studies in the field, the theoretical basis of different isotherm and kinetics models and the corresponding experimental insights into their applications to antibiotics are discussed extensively, thereby identifying the associated strengths, limitations, and efficacy of kinetics and isotherms for describing the performances of the adsorbents. In addition, we explore the regeneration of adsorbents and the potential applications of the adsorbents in engineering. Lastly, scholars will be able to grasp the present resources employed and the future necessities for antibiotic wastewater remediation.

Determinants of farmers' waste generation and disposal in rural areas of central China

The treatment of agricultural waste plays an important role in the sustainability of agricultural production and the well-being of rural communities. The present study analyzes the existing sources of agricultural waste in rural communities, their current disposal, and the farmers' attitudes towards waste management. The data is based on a survey in 21 communities in agricultural areas in Shaanxi (N = 359 farmers interviewed). The results provide a description of the main agricultural waste in the region based on empirical data. The responses highlight the farmers' experience, reputation, and engagement at recycling domestic waste as the main variables shaping their attitudes towards agricultural waste disposal. Farmers prefer treating primarily biowaste, mostly used for biogas generation or crop fertilizer at the farms. Improving waste management facilities, accessibility and economic incentives are identified as the main factors that could increase recycling rates, as well as the importance of training campaigns and instructions related to waste handling and recycling. The analysis captured the general trends in agricultural waste treatment and future directions and provides a basis for better designing waste and management alternatives.

Sustainable production of biosurfactants via valorisation of industrial wastes as alternate feedstocks

Globally, the rapid increase in the human population has given rise to a variety of industries, which have produced a variety of wastes. Due to their detrimental effects on both human and environmental health, pollutants from industry have taken centre stage among the various types of waste produced. The amount of waste produced has therefore increased the demand for effective waste management. In order to create valuable chemicals for sustainable waste management, trash must be viewed as valuable addition. One of the most environmentally beneficial and sustainable choices is to use garbage to make biosurfactants. The utilization of waste in the production of biosurfactant provides lower processing costs, higher availability of feedstock and environmental friendly product along with its characteristics. The current review focuses on the use of industrial wastes in the creation of sustainable biosurfactants and discusses how biosurfactants are categorized. Waste generation in the fruit industry, agro-based industries, as well as sugar-industry and dairy-based industries is documented. Each waste and wastewater are listed along with its benefits and drawbacks. This review places a strong emphasis on waste management, which has important implications for the bioeconomy. It also offers the most recent scientific literature on industrial waste, including information on the role of renewable feedstock for the production of biosurfactants, as well as the difficulties and unmet research needs in this area.

Evaluation of Biological Pretreatment of Wormwood Rod Reies with White Rot Fungi for Preparation of Porous Carbon

In this work, the wormwood rod residues are pretreated with white rot fungi as the precursor to preparing porous carbon following a simple carbonization and activation process (denoted herein as FWRA sample). The FWRA sample possesses abundant hierarchical pores structure with high specific surface area (1165.7 m² g^-1) and large pore volume (1.02 cm³ g^-1). As an electrode for supercapacitors, the FWRA sample offers a high specific capacitance of 443.2 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 and superb rate ability holding a specific capacitance of 270 F g^-1 at 100 A g^-1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte. The corresponding symmetrical capacitor has a superb cyclic stability with a low specific capacitance decay rate of 0.4% after 20,000 cycles at 5 A g^-1 in 1 M Na₂SO₄ electrolyte. Moreover, measurements revealed that when used as adsorbent, the FWRA sample is ideal for removing methyl orange (MO) from water, exhibiting a superior adsorption ability of 260.8 mg g^-1. Therefore, this study is expected to provide a simple and environmentally friendly technique for the generation of value-added and functional porous carbon materials from Chinese medicinal herbal residues, thus offering promising candidates for broad application areas.

Potential application of spent mushroom compost (SMC) biochar as low-cost filtration media in heavy metal removal from abandoned mining water: a review

Overpopulation and rapid development have put an increasing burden on the environment, leading to various water crisis. Importing water from abandoned mines as an alternative raw water source could be the next answer to alleviate water scarcity problems globally. However, due to its high heavy metals content, there is a need to find an economical and effective method to remove heavy metals before reusing it as potable water source. Biochar, a low-cost and carbon-rich biosorbent, has received increasing attention on its application as a remediating agent to remove heavy metals from water. Previous studies have revealed the potential properties of biochar as a heavy metal removal agent including high cation exchange capacity, high surface area, active surface functional groups, as well as efficient adsorption. Apparently, the most important factor influencing the sorption mechanism is the type of feedstock materials. Spent mushroom compost (SMC), a waste product from mushroom cultivation, has been found as an excellent biosorbent. SMC has received global attention as it is low cost and eco-friendly. It also has been proved as an efficient heavy metals remover from water. Nevertheless, its application as biochar is still scarce. Therefore, this review focuses on the potential of transforming SMC into modified biochar to remove heavy metals, especially from abandoned mining water. The present review emphasizes the current trends in adsorption methods for heavy metal removal from water, assembles data from previous studies on the feedstock of biosorbents to biochars, and discusses the potentials of SMC as a biochar for water treatment.

Potential of sugarcane bagasse in remediation of heavy metals: A review

Presence of heavy metal (HM) ions in wastewater have emerged as among the most prominent issues for improving water quality and reducing it's consequences for the environment, animal and public health. This paper mainly focuses on the remediation of HM ions from wastewater utilizing the relatively inexpensive and widely accessible agricultural waste-Sugarcane Bagasse (SCB). For this, a brief understanding of HMs was discussed (by understanding the sources and toxicity of HM, advantages and shortcomings of conventional processes). Apart from that, to understand the potential of SCB, this review would provide vital information on employing SCB biosorbent in natural and modified forms for HM removal. Therefore, various ways of SCB modifications (including physical, chemical, and composite formation), essential optimal operational conditions (solution pH, dosage of biosorbent, initial metal concentration, contact time, agitation speed, temperature, suitable isotherm and kinetic model) and involving adsorption mechanism were also studied. Finally, significant study gaps were identified to facilitate future research since SCB has been confirmed as a potential bio-adsorbent for removing HM ions.

Recent advances in the removal of dyes from wastewater using low-cost adsorbents

The presence of hazardous dyes in wastewater cause disastrous effects on living organisms and the environment. The conventional technologies for the remediation of dyes from water have several bottlenecks such as high cost and complex operation. This review aims to present a comprehensive outlook of various bio-sorbents that are identified and successfully employed for the removal of dyes from aqueous environments. The effect of physicochemical characteristics of adsorbents such as surface functional groups, pore size distribution and surface areas are critically evaluated. The adsorption potential at different experimental conditions of diverse bio-sorbents has been also explored and the influence of certain key parameters like solution pH, temperature, concentration of dyes, dosage of bio-sorbent and agitation speed is carefully evaluated. The mechanism of dyes adsorption, regeneration potential of the employed bio-sorbents and their comparison with other commercial adsorbents are discussed. The cost comparison of different adsorbents and key technological challenges are highlighted followed by the recommendations for future research.

Nanostructure of humic acid adsorption layer in the presence of Cs and Sr ions on the surface of waste material obtained from residue after supercritical extraction of hops

Adsorption of ionic molecules at the solid–liquid interface depends on various interactions, particles surface properties as well as the presence of the additional substance in the analyzed systems. The waste material obtained from the supercritical fluid extraction process was used as an adsorbent. The plant-based biosorbent structure was fully characterized. Then the humic acid (constituting the common interfering substance found in the environmental samples) sorption on the hop cones was investigated in the absence and presence of Sr/Cs ions under various pH conditions. Hence, the metal cation valence can influence the interactions between the colloidal system constituents and the adsorption layer structure. Determining the mutual interactions in the complex systems is important due to the potential possibility of using the waste sorbent to remove the radioactive Cs and Sr isotopes from the aquatic environment. Due to the lack of a porous structure of the sorbent and the high surface density of the charge, the metal ions are bound directly on the particles surface. The humic acid (HA) adsorption is greatly pH dependent—the largest removal was achieved under the acidic conditions (Qads = 88.69 mg/g), while the HA sorption process at pH 9 is impeded by a large negative charge deposited at the solid–liquid interface (Qads = 7.06 mg/g). At pH 3, formation of multilayer adsorption structure contributes to the effective removal of organic impurities. The metal ions valence significantly affects the humic acid binding mechanism. Divalent Sr acts like a “bridge” increasing the number of biosorbent active sites (at pH = 3 the HA adsorption increases almost twofold from 88.69 to 156.46 mg/g in the Sr ions), whereas the Cs+ ions leads to the reduction in the HA removal efficiency (Qads. = 46.31 mg/g under the same conditions).

Valorization of agro-food wastes: Ease of concomitant-enzymes production with application in food and biofuel industries

The novel and greener approach toward the co-production of hydrolytic enzymes in a single-cultivation medium with inexpensive substrates can bring down the production costs. Likewise, the natural and industrial organic biomass/solid are all nutritionally rich substrates waiting for free use in industries such as food, biofuel, etc. Valorization must broaden its applications in industries and households with a step towards a sustainable environment. The biofuel approach can be projected as one of the most promising deputations to meet future energy demands, in reduction of the environmental pollution due to excessive fossil fuel consumption. The present review highlights the multifaceted stature of microbial enzymes in this direction and possible implications mainly in the food industry and biofuel with the global impact of similar bio-based industries. In this review, design scale-up, fermentation cost, energy needs,and agro-food waste management have been meticulously delineated.

The synthesis of nanocellulose-based nanocomposites for the effective removal of hexavalent chromium ions from aqueous solution

The present study reports the synthesis of a polydopamine (PDA)/nanocellulose (NC) nanocomposite for the effective removal of chromium ions from water. PDA was used to modify NC surface producing a nanocomposite namely PDA/NC, by in situ polymerization of dopamine on the surface of NC. Thereafter, the as-synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using familiar techniques such as Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. All results indicated the successful combination of PDA and NC in one nanocomposite. The PDA/NC nanocomposite was evaluated for the removal of hexavalent Cr(vi) ions from an aqueous solution. The adsorption conditions, such as pH, contact time, and initial Cr(vi) concentration, were optimized. Adsorption kinetic studies revealed that Cr(vi) removal on the surface of PDA/NC nanocomposite followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, isotherm studies revealed that Cr(vi) removal followed the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity (q m) of 210 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism study indicated that the Cr(vi) removal was reached via complexation, adsorption, and chemical reduction. The reusability of a PDA/NC nanocomposite for the removal of Cr(vi) ions was studied up to five cycles with acceptable results. The high adsorption capacity and multiple removal mechanisms validated the effective applicability of PDA/NC nanocomposite as a useful adsorbent for the removal of Cr(vi) ions from aqueous solution.

Recent Literature Review of Significance of Polypyrrole and Its Biocomposites in Adsorption of Dyes from Aqueous Solution

The usage of dyes has been tremendously augmented due to industrialization and human’s intrinsic fascination with colors. Owing to their excessive usage in industries like textiles, food, cosmetics, paints, printing etc., it is indisputably a contributing factor in aquatic pollution. Dyes effluents have emerged as a burgeoning challenge. Owing to issues such as toxicity, mutagenicity, and disturbed photosynthesis associated with dye contamination, it is crucial to look for an explication to deal with this challenge. Polypyrrole-based biocomposites have been reported as good adsorbents for textile wastewater treatment. In the last decade, numerous studies have stated the effective removal of dyes via Polypyrrole-based biocomposites. This review concentrates on the implication of different Polypyrrole-based biocomposites for decontamination of dyes and synthesis methods, characteristics, and mechanism of dyes degradation by these biocomposites from wastewater.

Unraveling the adsorption mechanism of methylene blue onto selective pH precipitated Kraft lignins: Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic aspects

Lignin has been used on its crude or modified forms for adsorption purposes. This work evaluated the influence of selective pH precipitation of Kraft lignins (KLs) on their adsorptive performance for removing methylene blue (MB). The alkaline and acid KLs (KL A and KLB, respectively) were characterized by FTIR, ³¹P NMR, GPC and pH_PZC analyses. The effects of biosorbent and adsorbate concentrations, pH, ionic strength, contact time and temperature on the MB adsorption were evaluated. The equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were calculated by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, pseudo-first and second order and Van't Hoff and Gibbs models, respectively. KL A and KL B presented peculiar structural features, mainly hydroxyls concentration and M_w values, which have influenced on the removal efficiency of MB and the adsorptive capacities of KL A (>80 %; ≥80 mg g^-1) and KL B (>90 %; ≥20 mg g^-1), respectively. The equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters have shown that MB adsorption presented different mechanisms for each KL, but it only has driven by chemisorption for KL B. Therefore, KL A and KL B can be considered as potential novel biosorbents obtained through a clean, fast and simple route for textile wastewater treatment.

Ground tire rubber functionalization as a promising approach for the production of sustainable adsorbents of environmental pollutants

Waste tires management and further utilization are currently one of the biggest concerns regarding the environment and human health protection. At present, shredding, grinding, or pulverization of waste tires are the most popular options for industrial recycling. Although many solutions for ground tire rubber (GTR) applications were checked and verified so far, their further implementation at an industrial scale is still very limited. In this brief review work, ground tire rubber functionalization strategies as a promising approach for the production of sustainable adsorbents of environmental pollutants were presented and discussed. Our findings indicate that suitable functionalization of GTR significantly improves adsorption capacity or selectivity of prepared GTR-based adsorbents. However, it should be mentioned that most of the performed research based on multi-step and time-consuming protocols of GTR functionalization is performed usually in the presence of solvents, which results in very low efficiency and as a consequence high-cost and limited applications. Current research trends showed that reactive extrusion can be considered as efficient, solvent-free, and pro-ecological alternative for commonly investigated periodic methods of GTR functionalization. This work shows that reactive extrusion is a promising method for further development of GTR-based adsorbents dedicated to environmental pollutants.

Removal of lead and chromium from solution by organic peels: effect of particle size and bio-adsorbent

A variety of organic wastes can be used in innovative methods to treat water pollution through the adsorption process. In this work, we evaluated the effect of particle size (500–2000, 250–500, and less than 250 μm) and bio-adsorbent (orange, potato, and passion fruit peels) on the removal of lead and chromium from solution. The size and type of peels affected the capacity to adsorb metal ions (p < 0.05). Passion fruit peel had the highest metal adsorption, followed by orange and potato, since the cation exchange capacity (217.70 ± 39.57 cmol (+) kg⁻¹) and the specific surface area (141.10–1095.29 cm² g⁻¹) were higher in the passion fruit rind. The size of the adsorbent did not affect the organic matter, ash, exchange capacity, surface chemistry, or pH of the peels. However, these properties differed among the bio-adsorbents (p < 0.05). The Freundlich equation explained the adsorption of the metallic ions on the orange rind and of lead on the passion fruit. The linear model was the best fit for the adsorption isotherms of the metals on potato peel. The adsorption of chromium on the passion fruit had a maximum adsorption capacity of 3.3 mg g⁻¹. These results indicate that plant waste materials, especially passion fruit peel, have the potential as feasible and low-cost adsorbents in pilot studies for the treatment of polluted water.

Preparation and characterization of rice husk activated carbon-supported zinc oxide nanocomposite (RHAC-ZnO-NC)

Indiscriminate waste discharge into water bodies has increased the level of water pollution via anthropogenic activities. Hence the need for the development of sustainable and environmentally benign nanomaterials has the potential for wastewater treatment. Rice husk activated carbon (RHAC) prepared by orthophosphoric acid activation was successfully loaded with freshly prepared ZnO nanoparticles by a bottom-up approach via precipitation method resulting in the RHAC-ZnO-NC. RHAC-ZnO-NC's mineralogy with 72% zincite was determined by XRD, morphology by SEM, and the functional group by FTIR. The physicochemical parameters showed surface area 615.2 m^{2 g-1} , pH (pzc) (6.62), pH (6.53), bulk density (0.88 g/cm³), ash content (18.45%), and volatile matter (58.08%). The porosity was determined by iodine number. Boehm titration was carried out for oxygen-bearing functional group determination. The study substantiated RHAC-ZnO-NC as a promising material for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation.

Sustainable adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater: A review

Over the previous three decades, the worldwide use of pharmaceuticals has surged by more than 2.5 times. Although being considered essential to save many lives, pharmaceuticals have also emerged as a large source of complex environmental contaminants in recent decades. Consequently, the pharmaceuticals and their breakdown products are ending up into the water bodies thus progressively contaminating them and the surrounding environments. Based on recent studies concentrations in water sources are typically >0.1 μg/l and the concentration in treated water is typically >0.05 μg/l. These pharma drugs are removed from aquatic systems by processes such as oxidation, Ultraviolet degradation, reverse osmosis and nano-filtration. However, hazardous sludge creation, incomplete removal, expensive capital and operating costs, and the need for professional operating and maintenance personnel have all limited the economic sustainability of these systems. As a result, the presence of pharmaceuticals in water necessitates even more advanced technologies of purification to harvest clean water, yet present approaches are constrained by their high costs, low reusability, and disposal issues. Here, we review sustainable adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater. In this comprehensive review, an evaluation of water contamination caused by pharmaceutical compounds is discussed. An overview of current research on the employment of sustainable adsorbents for the removal of the major pharmaceuticals prevalent in water sources. Numerous aspects of high adsorption efficiencies of these pharmaceutical compounds with such sustainable adsorbents were observed; however, other factors, such as adsorbent regeneration and cost evaluation, must be taken into account in order to assess the true applicability of adsorbents.

Removal of lead ions (Pb2+) from water and wastewater: a review on the low-cost adsorbents

The presence of lead compounds in the environment is an issue. In particular, supply water consumption has been reported to be a significant source of human exposure to lead compounds, which can pose an elevated risk to humans. Due to its toxicity, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) have classified lead (Pb) and its compounds as probable human carcinogens. The European Community Directive and World Health Organization have set the maximum acceptable lead limits in tap water as 10 µg/L. The USEPA has a guideline value of 15 µg/L in drinking water. Removal of lead ions from water and wastewater is of great importance from regulatory and health perspectives. To date, several hundred publications have been reported on the removal of lead ions from an aqueous solution. This study reviewed the research findings on the low-cost removal of lead ions using different types of adsorbents. The research achievements to date and the limitations were investigated. Different types of adsorbents were compared with respect to adsorption capacity, removal performances, sorbent dose, optimum pH, temperature, initial concentration, and contact time. The best adsorbents and the scopes of improvements were identified. The adsorption capacity of natural materials, industrial byproducts, agricultural waste, forest waste, and biotechnology-based adsorbents were in the ranges of 0.8-333.3 mg/g, 2.5-524.0 mg/g, 0.7-2079 mg/g, 0.4-769.2 mg/g, and 7.6-526.0 mg/g, respectively. The removal efficiency for these adsorbents was in the range of 13.6-100%. Future research to improve these adsorbents might assist in developing low-cost adsorbents for mass-scale applications.

Heat and ZnCl2 chemical carbonization of date stone as an adsorbent: optimization of material fabrication parameters and adsorption studies

In the present study, the optimization of factors for the fabrication of highly adsorptive activated carbon from agricultural waste (date stone) was investigated by using ZnCl₂ as a chemical agent during the heat treatment. ZnCl₂ acts as a dehydration agent during the heat treatment, allowing a better porosity. In addition, it boosts the fragmentation of the lignocellulosic structure and the condensation of carbon rings. The findings of this investigation showed that the synthesis conditions for better ZnCl₂ chemical/heat carbonization to fabricate an adsorbent from date stone are 700 °C, 120 min, and 2.0 g/g. The characterization analysis showed that the as-prepared activated carbon exhibits a surface area of 1036 m²/g, an iodine number of 928.5 mg/g, and phenol number of 2.1 mmol/g, which are comparable to commercial activated carbons. Batch sorption tests to remove methylene blue (MB) from water showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 384.6 mg/g using the prepared activated carbon. Equilibrium data was best fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model. It was found also that the kinetic adsorption data obeyed the pseudo-first order, and both external diffusion and intra-particle diffusion control the adsorption. Based on the obtained results, the optimization of synthesis conditions may help the transfer of technology in terms of agriculture-based material valorization towards the environmental remediation.

The eco-friendly approach of cocktail enzyme in agricultural waste treatment: A comprehensive review

Agricultural development over the past decade has majorly contributed to the world's bioeconomy, but is the rise in agricultural activities just resulting in the best? Farming, food processing, livestock handling and other agro-based actions show an incremental rise in environmental deterioration by generating millions of tonnes of organic and inorganic solid waste across the globe. Incautious waste handling practices (incineration and landfilling) is resulting in greenhouse gas emissions, land pollution, groundwater contamination, soil erosion and chronic health hazards. Lately the concept of bioconversion has gained importance in valorising agro-waste (lignocellulosic biomasses) into value added products like biofuels, biogas, single cell proteins and biochar to effectively control waste and reduce the dependency on non-renewable feedstocks (fossil fuels). Biomass hydrolysis via enzymes is improved in terms of cost, efficiency, catalysis, stability and specificity by enrolling the use of enzyme cocktails to synergistically degrade lignocellulose into monomeric sugars and further into valued products. Enzyme blends like that of Xylanase + Pectinase + Cellulase shows 76.5% fermentation within 30 h by using banana peel as substrate for biofuel production. Other sectors like paper industries have also explored the use of enzyme blends of Xylanase + Pectinase + α-amylase + Protease+ lipase for bio-bleaching showing reduction in 50% chemical usage and 19.5% kappa number with adjacent increase in tensile strength by 23.55%. The scope of the present review is to highlight the technicalities of the concepts mentioned above, include qualitative data from different relatable studies and prove how the use of enzyme cocktails is an eco-friendly approach towards agro-waste management.

Advancements in Bioelectricity Generation Through Nanomaterial-Modified Anode Electrodes in Microbial Fuel Cells

The use of nanotechnology in bioelectrochemical systems to recover bioelectricity and metals from waste appears to be a potentially appealing alternative to existing established procedures. This trend exactly characterizes the current renewable energy production technology. Hence, this review focuses on the improvement of the anode electrode by using different functional metal oxide-conducting polymer nanocomposites to enhance microbial fuel cell (MFC) performance. Enhancement of interfacial bioelectrocatalysis between electroactive microorganisms and hierarchical porous nanocomposite materials could enhance cost-effective bioanode materials with superior bioelectrocatalytic activity for MFCs. In this review, improvement in efficiency of MFCs by using iron oxide- and manganese oxide-based polypyrrole hybrid composites as model anode modifiers was discussed. The review also extended to discussing and covering the principles, components, power density, current density, and removal efficiencies of biofuel cell systems. In addition, this research review demonstrates the application of MFCs for renewable energy generation, wastewater treatment, and metal recovery. This is due to having their own unique working principle under mild conditions and using renewable biodegradable organic matter as a direct fuel source.

Novel biologically synthesized metal nanopowder from wastewater for dye removal application

A novel adsorbent based on metal sulfide nanoparticles (MeSNPs) was biologically synthesized from metallic wastewater and examined for azo dyes removal from aqueous solution in batch and continuous systems. The size of the MeSNPs was in the range of 8-10 nm, with an average specific surface area of 120.4 m²/g. Batch adsorption study was then carried out using Direct Red 80 (DR 80) and Mordant Blue 9 (MB 9) as the model azo dyes by varying MeSNPs dosage, contact time, pH, and initial dye concentration. More than 99% removal efficiency of both the dyes was achieved by using MeSNPs at the following optimum conditions: 200 mg dosage, pH 2, 6 min contact time, and 100 mg L^-1 initial dye concentration. The batch sorption isotherm results were described using the Sips model, with the maximum predicted capacity values of 143.7 and 198.3 mg of dye per gram of adsorbent for DR 80 and MB 9, respectively. Besides, the sorption kinetic data for both the dyes followed the pseudo-second-order rate. Furthermore, maximum desorption efficiency values of 93% for DR 80 and 97% for MB 9 were achieved using an aqueous solution of pH 12, thus indicating that the adsorbent can be regenerated and reused further. Dynamic adsorption of the dyes was studied using a fixed-bed column with the MeSNPs as a function of liquid flow rates. The results showed an increase in breakthrough time with a decline in the flow rates for both DR 80 and MB 9 and the breakthrough behavior was explained using Thomas, Clark, and Yoon-Nelson models.

Determination of the Cadmium Ions from Aqueous Solution Using EDTA Functionalized Prunus Dulcis L. Peels by Solid-Phase Extraction Method

In the present study, Prunus Dulcis L. Peels was modified with ethylenedinitrilo tetraacetic acid and used as the sorbent for the preconcentration of Cd(II) ions from aqueous media. To characterize the sorbent, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis were used. The optimum preconcentration conditions such as pH, eluent type, sample volume, sample flow rate and foreign ions effect were determined. The mean recovery and relative standard deviation values were found to be 100.7 ± 1.5 and 4.01% for Cd(II) ions. The capacity of the sorbent was obtained 277.8 mg g^-1 from the Langmuir isotherm model. The limit of detection was calculated as 0.216 µg L^-1 (P.F:40). In order to test the accuracy and applicability of the method, certified reference material and spiked water samples were analyzed. The results demonstrated good agreement with the certified values (relative error < 10%).
