Abstract
RATIONALE To investigate the association between malnutrition and patient outcome following hospitalisation for Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS In April 2020, 268 adult patients (235 included in the follow-up) hospitalised for COVID-19 infection were evaluated for malnutrition risk and diagnosis using modified Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 and modified Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria (GLIM), respectively. An 18-month follow-up was carried out to assess the incidence and the associated risk factors for death and re-hospitalization. RESULTS The outcome was unknown for 33 patients. Death occurred in 39% of the 235 patients included in the follow-up. The risk of death was independently associated with malnutrition risk or diagnosis of malnutrition, whereas the male sex showed a protective association. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that patients with diagnosis of malnutrition had lower survival rate. The re-hospitalization rate was 31% and was negatively associated with BMI≥25, and positively associated with length of hospitalisation for COVID-19 and with cancer comorbidity. CONCLUSIONS In hospitalized patients for SARS-CoV-2 disease, both malnutrition risk (p = 0.050) and diagnosis of malnutrition (p = 0.047 with modified GLIM and C-reactive protein >0.5 mg/dL; p = 0.024 with modified GLIM and C-reactive protein >5 mg/dL) were predictive risk factors for mortality, whereas male sex was associated with lower risk of death. Overweight at time of hospitalization and the length of hospitalisation were respectively protective and risk factor for re-hospitalization after discharge.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has led to a global health crisis, exacerbating issues like malnutrition due to increased metabolic demands and reduced intake during illness. Malnutrition, a significant risk factor, is linked to worse outcomes in patients with COVID-19, such as increased mortality and extended hospital stays. This retrospective cohort study investigated the relationship between malnutrition and clinical outcomes within 90-180 days using data obtained from the TriNetX database. Patients aged >18 years diagnosed with COVID-19 between 1 January 2022, and 31 March 2024 were enrolled in the study. The propensity score-matching (PSM) method was used to match patients with malnutrition (malnutrition group) and those without malnutrition (control group). The primary composite outcome was the cumulative hazard ratio (HR) for post-COVID-19 condition, all-cause hospitalization, and all-cause mortality between 90 days and 180 days after COVID-19 diagnosis. The secondary outcomes were the individual components of the primary outcomes. Two cohorts, each consisting of 15,004 patients with balanced baseline characteristics, were identified using PSM. During the 90-180-day follow-up period, the malnutrition group exhibited a higher incidence of all-cause hospitalization, mortality, or post-COVID-19 condition (HR = 2.315, 95% confidence interval: 2.170-2.471, p < 0.0001). Compared with patients with COVID-19 without malnutrition, those with malnutrition may be associated with a higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Increasing evidence indicates an association between nutritional status and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease severity. The aim of the study was to describe the risk of malnutrition, body mass index (BMI) and vitamin D status of hospitalised COVID-19 patients and assess whether they are associated with duration of hospital stay, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilation, and mortality. METHODS The study is a descriptive retrospective study of 273 patients with COVID-19 admitted to Hospital from February 2020 to March 2021. Patients were screened for risk of malnutrition using a validated screening tool. BMI was calculated from height and weight. Insufficient Vitamin D status was defined as 25(OH)vitD <50 nmol/L. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between indicators of nutritional status of patients with COVID-19, and outcomes such as duration of stay >7 days, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and mortality. Interaction between risk of malnutrition and BMI of ≥30 kg/m2 was assessed using the likelihood ratio test with hospital stay, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and mortality as outcomes. RESULTS Screening for risk of malnutrition identified 201 (74%) patients at a medium to high risk of malnutrition. Patients defined as being at a medium or high risk of malnutrition were more likely to be hospitalised for >7 days compared to those defined as low risk (OR: 10.72; 95% CI: 3.9-29.46; p < 0.001 and OR: 61.57; 95% CI: 19.48-194.62; p < 0.001, respectively). All patients who were admitted to ICU (n = 41) and required mechanical ventilation (n = 27) were defined as having medium or high risk of malnutrition. High risk of malnutrition was also associated with increased odds of mortality (OR: 8.87; 955 CI 1.08-72,96; p = 0.042). BMI of ≥30 kg/m2 (43%) and 25(OH)vitD <50 nmol/L (20%) were not associated with duration of stay >7 days or mortality, although BMI ≥30 kg/m2 was associated with increased risk of ICU admission (OR: 7.12; 95% CI: 1.59-31.94; p = 0.010) and mechanical ventilation (OR: 8.86; 95% CI: 1.12-69.87; p = 0.038). Interactions between risk of malnutrition and BMI ≥30 kg/m2 were not significant to explain the outcomes of hospital stay >7 days, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, or mortality. CONCLUSION High risk of malnutrition among hospitalised COVID-19 patients was associated with longer duration of hospital stay, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation and mortality, and BMI ≥30 kg/m2 was associated with ICU admission and mechanical ventilation. Insufficient Vitamin D status was not associated with duration of hospital stay, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, or mortality.

Abstract
Identifying prognostic factors in elderly patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is crucial for clinical management. Recent evidence suggests malnutrition and renal dysfunction are associated with poor outcome. This study aimed to develop a prognostic model incorporating prognostic nutritional index (PNI), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and other parameters to predict mortality risk. This retrospective analysis included 155 elderly patients with severe COVID-19. Clinical data and outcomes were collected. Logistic regression analyzed independent mortality predictors. A joint predictor "L" incorporating PNI, eGFR, D-dimer, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was developed and internally validated using bootstrapping. Decreased PNI (OR = 1.103, 95% CI: 0.78-1.169), decreased eGFR (OR = 0.964, 95% CI: 0.937-0.992), elevated D-dimer (OR = 1.001, 95% CI: 1.000-1.004), and LDH (OR = 1.005, 95% CI: 1.001-1.008) were independent mortality risk factors (all P < .05). The joint predictor "L" showed good discrimination (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.863) and calibration. The bootstrapped area under the curve was 0.858, confirming model stability. A combination of PNI, eGFR, D-dimer, and LDH provides useful prognostic information to identify elderly patients with severe COVID-19 at highest mortality risk for early intervention. Further external validation is warranted.

Abstract
Background and aim Malnutrition among intensive care unit (ICU) patients is associated with a higher risk of mortality and prolonged hospitalization. However, the influence of malnutrition on severe outcomes of ICU patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is unclear. By evaluating the effect of malnutrition on the outcomes of COVID-19 in the ICU in older adult patients, this study will contribute to new knowledge of assessing the nutritional status and recovery of these patients. Methods In the current single center prospective study, 310 critically ill COVID-19 patients with an age range of ≥65 years were recruited. Data on demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, comorbidities, medications, and types of mechanical ventilation were collected in the first 24 h of ICU admission. Malnutrition was defined based on the two-step approach of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) scale at baseline. During the 45 days after the baseline, we collected data on delirium incidence, mortality, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) requirement, length of ICU and hospital admission, and re-hospitalization. Results In this study, the prevalence of malnutrition was 63.4% among critically ill COVID-19 patients. During the 45-day follow-up, 190 (61.3%) COVID-19 deaths were recorded among the baseline 310 patients. After controlling for potential confounders, malnutrition was associated with an increased risk of delirium so malnourished COVID-19 patients had a significantly 35% higher risk of delirium than those without malnutrition (HR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.01-1.83). Such a significant association was not for COVID-19 mortality and IMV requirement. In addition, malnutrition was associated with a significantly 84% greater odds of prolonged ICU admission (OR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.09-3.10). No significant association was seen between malnutrition and re-hospitalization and also prolonged hospital admission. Conclusion Malnutrition was associated with an increased risk of delirium and prolonged ICU admission among critically ill older adult COVID-19 patients. Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of malnutrition could be a key component in improving outcomes in these patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spread rapidly, with 37 million cases and more than 699,000 deaths. Among intensive care unit (ICU) patients with COVID-19, a high incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) has been observed, ranging from 50 to 80%; furthermore, 85.9% were calculated to have high nutritional risk, which doubled their odds of death. The aim of the present study was to evaluate possible associations between nutritional risk, acute kidney injury, and morbidity and mortality in patients with COVID-19 admitted to an ICU. METHODS Retrospective cohort study of adult and older-adult patients hospitalized for >24 h in an ICU. The exposure was diagnosis of COVID-19, while the outcomes were mortality, acute kidney injury, dialysis, mechanical ventilation, and vasopressor use. The association of nutritional risk with outcomes was evaluated. The sample consisted of two secondary datasets. Individuals aged <18 years, those with dialytic chronic kidney disease, pregnant women, and those diagnosed with brain death were excluded. RESULTS The sample consisted of 192 patients: 101 in the exposure group (positive for COVID-19) and 91 in the control group (no COVID-19 diagnosis). The COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 groups differed significantly in the variables weight, body mass index (BMI), nutritional risk, mNUTRIC-S score, and length of ICU stay. Our results suggest that the optimal mNUTRIC-S score cutoff to predict nutritional risk is <5 points. CONCLUSION COVID-19 has a significant impact on patients' kidney function, increasing the incidence of AKI and the likelihood of death. Nutritional risk is a major factor in the mortality of patients with COVID-19. Therefore, use of the mNUTRIC-S scale could contribute to assessment of prognosis in this patient population.

Abstract
Both underweight and obesity have been associated with poor prognosis in COVID-19. In an older populations of patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 infection, we aimed to evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and short and long-term prognosis. Among 434 consecutive patients aged ≥ 70 years and hospitalized for suspected COVID-19 at a university hospital, 219 patients (median age of 83 years, 53% male) testing positive for COVID-19 and for whom BMI was recorded at admission, agreed to participate. Among them, 39 had a BMI < 20 kg/m2, 73 had a BMI between 20 and 24.9 kg/m2 and 107 had a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. After adjustment for confounders, BMI < 20 kg/m2 was associated with a higher risk of one-year mortality (hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval]: 1.75 [1.00-3.05], p = 0.048), while BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 was not (HR: 1.04 [0.64-1.69], p = 0.9). However, BMI was linearly correlated with both in-hospital acute respiratory failure (p = 0.02) and cardiovascular events (p = 0.07). In this cohort of older patients hospitalized for COVID-19, low BMI, rather than high BMI, appears as an independent risk factor for death after COVID-19. The pathophysiological patterns underlying this excess mortality remain to be elucidated.

Abstract
Background: Malnutrition is an underdiagnosed condition that negatively affects the clinical outcomes of patients, being associated with an increased risk of adverse events, increased hospital stay, and higher mortality. Therefore, nutritional assessment is a required and necessary process in patient care. The objective of this study was to identify the factors associated with nutritional risk by applying the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) scale in a population of critically ill patients. Methods: This was an observational, analytical, and retrospective study. Sociodemographic, clinical, hematological, and biochemical variables and their relationship with nutritional risk and mortality were analyzed. Results: Of 630 patients, the leading cause of admission was pathologies of the circulatory and respiratory system (50%); 28.4% were at high nutritional risk; and mortality was 11.6% and associated with nutritional risk, hemoglobin, and plasma urea nitrogen. Conclusions: The presence of gastrointestinal symptoms and the type of nutritional support received during hospitalization could increase the likelihood of presenting a medium/high nutritional risk, while polycythemia reduced this probability. An associative model was found to determine nutritional risk with an adequate specificity and diagnostic validity index.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hospitalized COVID-19 patients may present acute malnutrition which could influence morbidity and mortality. In the first wave of the pandemic severe weight loss was observed in many hospitalized patients. This pilot study evaluates the usefulness of an electronic automatized alarm for the early quantification of a low food intake as a predictor of the risk of malnutrition using COVID-19 disease as a model of severe illness. METHODS Observational prospective nutritional screening with a daily automatized warning message to the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service provided by the Information Systems. All adult patients admitted for COVID-19 from November 2020 to February 2021 were included. When diet intake was <50% during consecutive 48h, an automated message was generated identifying the patient as "at nutritional risk (NR)" and additional specialist nutritional evaluation and therapy was performed within the next 24h. RESULTS 205 patients out of 1176 (17.4%) were detected by automatized alarm and were considered as presenting high NR; 100% were concordant by the validated nutritional screening SNAQ. Nutritional support after detection was: 77.6% dietary adaptation+oral supplements; 9.3% enteral nutrition (EN); 1.5% parenteral nutrition (PN); 1% EN+PN and 10.7% no intervention is performed due to an end-of-life situation. Median weight loss during admission was 2.5kg (p25 0.25-p75: 6kg). Global mortality was 6.7% while in those detected by automatized alarm was 31.5%. CONCLUSIONS The implementation of an electronic NR screening tool was feasible and allowed the early nutritional assessment and intervention in COVID-19 hospitalized patients and can be useful in patients hospitalized for other pathologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term effects of COVID-19 showed a wide range of symptoms. Also, it was found that older patients were five times more likely than younger patients to develop long-COVID symptoms (1). This study aimed to investigate the use of Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) and the Mini Nutrition Assessment-Short Form (MNA-sf) among COVID-19 in elderly patients in Saudi Arabia. METHODS A total of (n = 159) COVID-19 elderly patients were recruited in the study; the relationship between patients' characteristics, including age, gender, Body Mass Index (BMI), infection history, vaccination and chronic disease were evaluated using NRS-2002 and MNA-sf. Multivariate logistic regression to estimate the Odd Ratio (OR) by comparing the OR of different variables between normal nutritional Status and at-risk and Cohen's kappa (κ) coefficient was assessed to analyse the agreement between both tools. RESULTS MNA-sf showed a positive association between age and malnutrition risk ≥ 66 years old P = 0.035. Both tools showed a negative association between BMI (P < 0.001 and P = 0.046), respectively and vaccination (P = 0.002 and P = 0.01), respectively, with risk for malnutrition. There was no significant association between Diabetes (DM) and malnutrition risk, but elderly Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) were at malnutrition risk using the NRS- 2002 tool P = 0.003. Inversely, people infected six months or more before malnutrition assessment have a lower risk of malnutrition P = 0.05. CONCLUSIONS Both tools were valuable and practical tools for screening elderly people with COVID-19 who are at nutritional risk and those in need of additional nutritional intervention. Further research needed to be applied in the relationship between nutritional status during and post-infectious disease for elderly people using cross-sectional and intervention studies in order to prevent malnutrition complications in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin manifestations' true prognostic value, and clinical and epidemiological pictures in SARS-CoV-2 infection in African populations are poorly described and understudied. More familiarity with COVID-19 cutaneous manifestations may aid in early clinical diagnosis or guide prognosis. METHODS In this literature review, we looked for potential studies published from December 2019 to March 2023 on COVID-19 cutaneous lesions in African populations. Our key questions were focused on the prognostic values of cutaneous manifestations related to COVID-19. RESULTS Our findings show that cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 vary by country and severity of COVID-19, primarily multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS). Significant differences were also found between various dermatological lesions, primarily MIS, erythema multiforme-like, livedoid, vesicular, or varicella-like rashes, urticarial, maculopapular or morbilliform rashes, and chilblain-like or pernio-like rashes. There were 47.5% (115/242) of MIS cases reported in nine published African studies. Our findings also revealed that MIS may be diagnosed in 2-7 days due to early onset rash. Advanced age, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, HIV, tuberculosis, asthma, atopic disease, underweight, malnutrition, and malignancy were found to be associated with COVID-19 cutaneous manifestations in African populations. CONCLUSIONS COVID-19-related skin manifestations in African populations are important as a driving force in COVID-19 prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Nutritional status is essential for the maintenance of the immune system, with malnutrition suppressing immunity. The aims of the current study were to assess the immune status of a group of Jordanian adults and to evaluate the association between vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc consumption and the Immune Status during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A total of 615 adults Jordanian participants were enrolled in this study, an online- based cross sectional survey was used as a tool for this study. Data was collected by distributing the questionnaire form link through social media platforms. The association between ISQ score and the supplement intake pattern (daily, weekly, monthly and rarely) was assessed using multinomial logistic regression analysis, described as Odds ratio and 95% CI. RESULTS Data have indicated that the majority of the participants did not take Vitamin D supplements during the pandemic (46.3%). Also, there was a significant association between the frequency of Vitamin D supplement intake and ISQ (r = 12.777; P < 0.05). Data showed that the majority of participants used vitamin C supplementation (49.4%). Also, there was a significant association between the frequency of Vitamin C supplement intake and ISQ (r = 12.797; P < 0.05). Data also have indicated that the majority of the participants did not increase their consumption of Zinc during the COVID-19 pandemic (55.6%). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest a significant association between the frequency of Vitamin D, and vitamin C supplement intake and ISQ. Nutritional status is essential for the maintenance of the immune system, with malnutrition suppressing immunity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional status is a critical factor throughout COVID-19 disease course. Malnutrition is associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. AIM To assess the prevalence of malnutrition and identify its associated factors in COVID-19 survivors. METHODS Study cohort included 1230 COVID-19 survivors aged 18-86 attending a post-COVID-19 outpatient service. Data on clinical parameters, anthropometry, acute COVID-19 symptoms, lifestyle habits were collected through a comprehensive medical assessment. Malnutrition was assessed according to Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria. RESULTS Prevalence of malnutrition was 22% at 4-5 months after acute disease. Participants who were not hospitalized during acute COVID-19 showed a higher frequency of malnutrition compared to those who needed hospitalization (26% versus 19%, p < 0.01). Malnutrition was found in 25% COVID-19 survivors over 65 years of age compared to 21% younger participants (p < 0.01). After multivariable adjustment, the likelihood of being malnourished increased progressively and independently with advancing age (Odds ratio [OR] 1.02; 95% CI 1.01-1.03) and in male participants (OR 5.56; 95% CI 3.53-8.74). Malnutrition was associated with loss of appetite (OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.73-3.62), and dysgeusia (OR 4.05; 95% CI 2.30-7.21) during acute COVID-19. DISCUSSION In the present investigation we showed that malnutrition was highly prevalent in a large cohort of COVID-19 survivors at 4-5 months from acute illness. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the need to implement comprehensive nutritional assessment and therapy as an integral part of care for COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older adults are at increased risk for disease severity and poorer prognosis following COVID-19 infection. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to explore the impact of multidisciplinary rehabilitation in the acute or post-acute hospital setting for older adults with COVID-19. METHODS The Cochrane library, EMBASE, Cinahl and Medline (via EBSCO), PubMed, and Web of Science were systematically searched in June 2022 and a repeat search was completed in March 2023. Screening, data extraction and quality appraisal were conducted independently by two reviewers. Studies reporting outcomes for older adults following multidisciplinary rehabilitation (provided by two or more Health and Social Care Professionals) were included. Both observational and experimental study designs were included. The primary outcome was functional ability. Secondary outcomes included discharge disposition, acute hospital and rehabilitation unit length of stay, mortality, primary and secondary healthcare utilisation, and long-term effects of COVID-19. RESULTS Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria, comprising a total of 570 older adults. Where reported, older adults stayed in the acute hospital for a mean of 18 days (95%CI, 13.35- 23.13 days) and in rehabilitation units for 19 days (95%CI, 15.88-21.79 days). There was a significant improvement in functional ability among older adults with COVID-19 who received multidisciplinary rehabilitation (REM, SMD = 1.46, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.98). The proportion of older adults who were discharged directly home following rehabilitation ranged from 62 to 97%. Two studies reported a 2% inpatient mortality rate of older persons during rehabilitative care. No study followed up patients after the point of discharge and no study reported on long term effects of COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS Multidisciplinary rehabilitation may result in improved functional outcomes on discharge from rehabilitation units/centres for older adults with COVID-19. Findings also highlight the need for further research into the long-term effect of rehabilitation for older adults following COVID-19. Future research should comprehensively describe multidisciplinary rehabilitation in terms of disciplines involved and the intervention provided.

Abstract
PURPOSE SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to various manifestations beyond an inflammatory response, such as anorexia, hyposmia, and other symptoms that may increase the risk of nutritional disorders. Sarcopenia and cachexia are conditions that appear to influence COVID-19 evolution. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate sarcopenia and cachexia in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, verifying their clinical impacts and relationship with prognostic markers. METHODS This is a case-control study involving inpatients with and without a COVID-19 diagnosis. The occurrence of sarcopenia was evaluated according to European Working Group on Sarcopenia 2 criteria. Cachexia was evaluated according to (Evans et al. in Clin Nutr 27:793-799, 2008) criteria. Inflammatory markers and the 4C Mortality Score were evaluated. RESULTS Our study included 96 individuals, divided into two groups: COVID-19 (n = 32) and control (n = 64). The mean age of the COVID-19 group was 63.3 ± 11.8 years, and the control group had a mean age of 64.3 ± 5.5 years. No significant differences in mean age were found between the groups. The prevalence of sarcopenia and cachexia in patients with COVID-19 was 21.9% and 28.1%, respectively, while in the control group, it was 29.7% and 26.6%, respectively. Sarcopenic patients with COVID-19 had a higher risk of death (4C Mortality Score) (p = 0.038). The occurrence of sarcopenia or cachexia within the COVID-19 group was not associated with inflammatory biomarkers or a higher number of COVID-19 symptoms (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The presence of sarcopenia among COVID-19 patients increased the risk of mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of body composition (BC) abnormalities on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes remains to be determined. OBJECTIVE We summarized the evidence on BC abnormalities and their relationship with adverse clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. METHODS A systematic search was conducted up until September 26, 2022 for observational studies using BC techniques to quantify skeletal muscle mass (or related compartments), muscle radiodensity or echo intensity, adipose tissue (AT, or related compartments), and phase angle (PhA) in adults with COVID-19. Methodological quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A synthesis without meta-analysis was conducted to summarize the prevalence of BC abnormalities and their significant associations with clinical outcomes. RESULTS We included 62 studies (69.4% low risk of bias) with 12 to 1,138 participants, except three with up to 490,301 participants. Using computed tomography and different cut-offs, prevalence ranged approximately from 22-90% for low muscle mass, 12-85% for low muscle radiodensity, 16-70% for high visceral AT. Using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), prevalence of high fat mass was 51% and low PhA was 22-88%. Mortality was inversely related to PhA (3/4 studies) and positively related to intramuscular AT (4/5 studies), muscle echo intensity (2/2 studies), and BIA-estimated fat mass (2/2 studies). Intensive care unit admission was positively related to visceral AT (6/7 studies) and total AT (2/3 studies). Disease severity and hospitalization outcomes were positively related to intramuscular AT (2/2 studies). Inconsistent associations were found for the rest of BC measures and hospitalization outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Abnormalities in BC were prevalent in patients with COVID-19. Although conflicting associations were observed among certain BC abnormalities and clinical outcomes, higher muscle echo intensity (reflective of myosteatosis) and lower PhA were more consistently associated with greater mortality risk. Likewise, high IMAT and VAT were associated with mortality and ICU admission, respectively.

Abstract
Malnutrition is an increasingly prevalent problem in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Increased risks associated with TJA in the setting of malnourishment have been well documented. Standardized scoring systems in addition to laboratory parameters such as albumin, prealbumin, transferrin, and total lymphocyte count have been developed to identify and evaluate malnourished patients. Despite an abundance of recent literature, there is no consensus on the best approach for screening TJA patients from a nutritional standpoint. Although there are a variety of treatment options, including nutritional supplements, nonsurgical weight loss therapies, bariatric surgery, and the involvement of dieticians and nutritionists, the effect of these interventions on TJA outcomes has not been well characterized. This overview of the most current literature aims to provide a clinical framework for approaching nutrition status in arthroplasty patients. A comprehensive understanding of the tools available for managing malnourishment will facilitate improved arthroplasty care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition and increased malnutrition risk are frequently identified in hospitalized adults. The increase in hospitalization rates during the COVID-19 pandemic was accompanied by the documentation of adverse hospitalization outcomes in the presence of certain co-morbidities, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. It was not clear whether the presence of malnutrition increased in-hospital death in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. OBJECTIVES To estimate the effect of malnutrition on in-hospital mortality in adults hospitalized with COVID-19; and secondarily, to estimate the prevalence of malnutrition in adults hospitalized with malnutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Collaboration databases were queried using the search terms malnutrition and COVID-19 and hospitalized adults and mortality. Studies were reviewed using the 14-question Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Designs (QATSDD) (questions appropriate for quantitative studies). Author names; date of publication; country; sample size; malnutrition prevalence; malnutrition screening/diagnostic method; number of deaths in malnourished patients; and number of deaths in adequately nourished patients were extracted. Data were analyzed using MedCalc software v20.210 (Ostend, Belgium). The Q and I2 tests were calculated; a forest plot was generated, and the pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated using the random effects model. RESULTS Of the 90 studies identified, 12 were finally included in the meta-analysis. In the random effects model, malnutrition or increased malnutrition risk increased odds of in-hospital death by more than three-fold: OR 3.43 (95% CI 2.549-4.60), p < 0.001. The pooled prevalence estimate for malnutrition or increased malnutrition risk was 52.61% (95% CI 29.50-75.14%). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS It is clear that malnutrition is an ominous prognostic sign in patients hospitalized with COVID. This meta-analysis, which included studies from nine countries on four continents with data from 354,332 patients, is generalizable.

Abstract
Background Dietary intake constitutes a fundamental support in hospitalized patients to reduce morbimortality, risk of complications, and hospital stay. Objective We compared dietary intake, stress, anxiety, and satisfaction with the nutrition service in patients with and without COVID-19; we also analyzed the correlation between the variables mentioned. Methods A cross-sectional, comparative, and correlational study was carried out. A total of 215 patients were selected by non-probability convenience sampling (97 with COVID-19 and 118 without COVID-19). Results Patients with COVID-19 presented a higher percentage of "all the dish served" consumption (63.9%), as well as a higher percentage of "high" anxiety (18.6%) and "very high" satisfaction (28.9%) compared to their counterparts without COVID-19. The stress variable was predominantly moderate in both groups (57.7% vs 55.9%). Statistically significant and indirect correlation was found between satisfaction and stress level (rho = -0.289; p<0.01) in patients without COVID-19; similarly, between intake and stress level (rho =-.254; p<0.05) in patients with COVID-19. Both groups presented a statistically significant and direct correlation between anxiety and stress level (rho =0.432 without COVID-19, rho = 0.525 with COVID-19; p<0.01). Conclusion The findings suggest a multidisciplinary intervention, in which the improvement of mental health in the study population is contemplated and to coadunate the negative effects on the perception of the quality of care of the nutrition service and on dietary intake.

Abstract
We aimed to describe practice patterns and outcomes in patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support throughout the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, with the hypothesis that mortality would improve as we accumulated knowledge and experience. We included 48 patients supported on veno-venous ECMO (VV-ECMO) at a single institution between April 2020 and December 2021. Patients were categorized into three waves based on cannulation date, corresponding to the wild-type (wave 1), alpha (wave 2), and delta (wave 3) variants. One hundred percent of patients in waves 2 and 3 received glucocorticoids, compared with 29% in wave 1 ( p < 0.01), and the majority received remdesivir (84% and 92% in waves 2 and 3, vs . 35% in wave 1; p < 0.01). Duration of pre-ECMO noninvasive ventilation was longer in waves 2 and 3 (mean 8.8 days and 3.9 days, vs . 0.7 days in wave 1; p < 0.01), as was time to cannulation (mean 17.2 and 14.6 days vs . 8.8 days in wave 1; p < 0.01) and ECMO duration (mean 55.7 days and 43.0 days vs . 28.4 days in wave 1; p = 0.02). Mortality in wave 1 was 35%, compared with 63% and 75% in waves 2 and 3 ( p = 0.05). These results suggest an increased prevalence of medically refractory disease and rising mortality in later variants of COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Strict isolation of COVID-19 patients to prevent cross infection may inadvertently cause serious adverse outcomes including psychological harm, limitations to care, increased incidence of delirium, deconditioning and reduced quality of life. Previous research exploring the staff perspective of the effect of isolation on patients is limited. The aim of this study is to understand staff perceptions and interpretations of their experiences of the care and treatment of isolated patients and the impact of isolation on patients, families, and staff. METHOD This qualitative, exploratory study is set in a major metropolitan, quaternary hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Data was collected in focus groups with clinical and non-clinical staff and analysed using content analysis. The hospital ethics committee granted approval. Each participant gave informed verbal consent. RESULTS Participants included 58 nursing, medical, allied health, and non-clinical staff. Six main themes were identified: 1) Communication challenges during COVID-19; 2) Impact of isolation on family; 3) Challenges to patients' health and safety; 4) Impact on staff; 5) Challenging standards of care; 6) Contextual influences: policy, decision-makers and the environment. CONCLUSION Isolating patients and restricting visitors resulted in good pandemic management, but staff perceived it came at considerable cost to staff and consumers. Innovative communication technology may facilitate improved connection between all parties. Mental health support is needed for patients, families, and staff. Further research using a co-design model with input from patients, families and staff is recommended to determine appropriate interventions to improve care. Preventing the spread of infection is essential for good pandemic management, but the cost to consumers and staff must be mitigated. Preparation for future pandemics must consider workforce preparedness, adapted models of care and workflow.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is associated with negative outcomes in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and during chronic diseases. We aimed to evaluate if low skeletal muscle index (SMI) measured by computed tomography (CT) at the thoracic level is associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized patients with respiratory COVID-19. METHODS Patients admitted to the hospital between March 1st and June 9, 2020 with a confirmed diagnosis of respiratory COVID-19 in the Emergency Department were included in this retrospective cohort study. SMI was assessed from a transverse CT image at the T12 level. We analysed the association between thoracic SMI and mortality, ICU admissions, infections, length of stay and gravity scores. RESULTS We included 244 patients, whose median age was 62 (20-95) years, mean body mass index was 28,6 kg/m2, and 34% were obese patients. 102 patients (41,8%) had low thoracic SMI. On multivariable analysis, low thoracic SMI was associated with more infections (OR = 1,88 [1,06-2,98]) and increased length of stay (OR = 1,87 [1,14-3,49]) but not with mortality (OR = 1.37 [0.54-3.52]), whereas it was inversely associated with ICU admission (OR = 5,56 [1,96-16,67]. CONCLUSION Low SMI measured by CT at the thoracic level T12 is associated with negative outcomes in patients with respiratory COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition causes diverse alterations in the immune system, and COVID-19 is an infection affecting the immune system, consequently leading to malnutrition. AIMS This study aimed to investigate the use of prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and selected inflammatory indices for malnutrition screening among COVID-19 hospitalized patients. MATERIAL AND METHODOLOGY This is a single-center retrospective study that enrolled 289 hospitalized COVID-19 patients between 1st January to 30th April 2021, their median age was 59 years. Demographic and biochemical data were collected from patients' records. The PNI, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and an early warning score to predict mortality risk (ANDC) were calculated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. A P-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS about 30 % of patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), and ICU patients had significantly higher levels of white blood cell (WBCs) count, neutrophils, C-reactive protein (C-RP), and D-dimer (P < 0.05). On the other hand, they had significantly lower levels of lymphocytes and serum albumin (P < 0.001; for both). Those with high ANDC scores were more likely to develop severe conditions affecting nutritional status compared to non-ICU (OR = 1.04, 95 % CI:1.014-1.057; P < 0.001). ANDC showed good discrimination ability with an AUC of 0.784 (cut-off value > 68.19 score). CONCLUSION It is suggested that ANDC could be used as a predictor for nutritional status and severity in COVID-19 hospitalized patients.

Abstract
Background Patients with obesity who have SARS-CoV-2 are at significant risk for developing serious clinical problems that need intensive care and have a bad prognosis. Aim The aim of this study was to determine obesity and outcome among patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 at the Indonesia's national referral hospital. Methods This study used a retrospective cohort. The study samples were SARS-CoV-2 patients who were treated by pulmonary specialists in the intensive room of Dr. M. Djamil Hospital Padang. The number of samples in this study was 106 subjects. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-square test, Kaplan-Meier, and Cox regression. P < 0.05 was significant, and the data were analyzed using the SPSS version 21.0 program. Results The results of this study found obesity was associated with the outcome of SARS-CoV-2 patients treated at Indonesia's national referral hospital (p<0.05, OR=3.55 (95% CI 1.44-8.71)). The mortality rate among patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 at Indonesia's national referral hospital with obesity was higher than non-obese; 82.7% and 57.4% respectively. The length of stay in patients with obesity was also shorter; 12 days compared to 19 days in non-obese. Conclusion There was an association between obesity with mortality of SARS-CoV-2 patients in a national referral hospital in Indonesia. This study can provide input in the therapeutic management of patients with obesity so as to reduce the poor prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 is a very harmful pandemic, and its recovery process is highly influenced by nutritional status; however, an appropriate nutritional scale has not yet been proposed for these patients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the modified Nutrition Risk in the Critically ill (mNUTRIC) score in critically ill patients affected by COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study performed on 204 critically ill patients affected by COVID-19 admitted to the ICU wards. Evaluated indicators include the mNUTRIC Score as well as demographic, and biochemical indicators. RESULTS A high percentage of COVID-19 patients (67.2%) had severe disease. Hospital and ICU stay (p > 0.001) and PH (p > 0.001) values were significantly lower in non-survivors than in survivors. mNUTRIC score (p > 0.001), PCO2 (p = 0.003), and CRP levels (p = 0.021) were significantly higher in non-survivors than survivors. mNUTRIC score had a direct correlation with age (p > 0.001), AST (p = 0.000), LDH (p = 0.026), and CRP (p = 0.014) and an inverse correlation with hospital duration (p = 0.031), albumin (p = 0.003) and PH (p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a non-significant correlation between the mNUTRIC score and mortality chance (OR = 1.085, 95%CI [0.83, 1.42], p = 0.552). While, patients with more severe COVID-19 disease (OR = 8.057, 95%CI [1.33, 48.64], p = 0.023) and higher PCO2 (OR = 1.042, 95%CI [1.01, 1.08], p = 0.023) levels had higher odds of mortality. CONCLUSIONS Our findings revealed that COVID-19 patients with higher CRP levels and lower PH had higher mortality and poor nutritional condition. Moreover, there was a non-significant association between the mNUTRIC score and mortality chance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes malnutrition in infected patients. This study aimed to investigate the use of systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for malnutrition assessment among COVID-19 inpatients. METHODS This is a single-center retrospective study on 108 hospitalized COVID-19 patients; 14 were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Data were collected from patients' profiles while NLR, PLR, GPS, and SII were calculated. Inflammatory indices' predictive power was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). A P-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Hospitalization days, neutrophils count, C-reactive protein (CRP), and serum urea levels were significantly higher in ICU patients. None of SII, PLR, and NLR were significantly different between ICU and non-ICU groups. Also, albumin and GPS showed a higher sensitivity level (100.0), followed by PLR and SII (78.57 and 71.34, respectively). Regarding ROC curves, even though NLR, PLR, and SII provided the largest area under the curve (AUC) (0.687, 0.682, 0.645; respectively), they have shown a poor discrimination ability, while GPS and albumin were ineffective in predicting malnutrition in COVID-19 patients. CONCLUSION NLR, SII, and PLR showed poor predicting ability for malnutrition among COVID-19 inpatients. Additional consideration should be taken for using inflammatory parameters (SII, PLR, GPS, and NLR) to predict malnutrition in COVID-19 inpatients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Patients undergoing dialysis are less likely to develop immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Malnutrition is common in the dialysis population. However, whether malnutrition contributes to the impaired immunogenicity remains unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the association between nutritional status and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine response in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. METHODS A total of 206 hemodialysis patients (mean age, 67 ± 13 years) without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection were examined for the primary outcome of seroconversion, defined as the detection of IgG antibodies (≥50 AU/mL) to the receptor-binding domain of the S1 spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 one month after a priming dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, an adenovirus-vectored vaccine. Nutritional status was assessed by using the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, an objective indicator of nutrition incorporating serum albumin, total cholesterol, and total lymphocyte count, as well as the subjective global assessment (SGA). RESULTS Overall, 16.5% of patients were classified as malnourished, and 64.1% of patients were at risk for malnutrition based on the CONUT score. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG were the highest in patients with normal nutrition. In multivariate logistic regression analyses adjusted for age, sex, comorbidities, and use of immunosuppressants, patients with malnutrition remained less likely to develop an antibody response than those with normal nutrition (odds ratio 0.23, 95% CI, 0.07-0.76). SGA was a significant predictor of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG seroconversion in univariate but not multivariate analyses. CONCLUSIONS Malnutrition according to CONUT score is associated with impaired humoral responses to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Our results highlight the importance of incorporating nutritional assessment into routine dialysis care to identify patients at risk for suboptimal immune responses after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Further research is needed to determine whether nutritional intervention can improve immune responses in these vulnerable patients.

Abstract
With prolonged pandemic conditions, and emerging evidence but persisting low awareness of the importance of nutritional derangements, ESPEN has promoted in close collaboration with World Health Organization-Europe a call for papers on all aspects relating COVID-19 and nutrition as well as nutritional care, in the Society Journals Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition ESPEN. Although more COVID-related papers are being submitted and continue to be evaluated, ESPEN and WHO present the current editorial to summarize the many published findings supporting major interactions between nutritional status and COVID-19. These include 1) high risk of developing the disease and high risk of severe disease in the presence of pre-existing undernutrition (malnutrition) including micronutrient deficiencies; 2) high risk of developing malnutrition during the course of COVID-19, with substantial impact on long-term sequelae and risk of long COVID; 3) persons with obesity are also prone to develop or worsen malnutrition and its negative consequences during the course of COVID-19; 4) malnutrition screening and implementation of nutritional care may improve disease outcomes; 5) social and public health determinants contribute to the interaction between nutritional status and COVID-19, including negative impact of lockdown and social limitations on nutrition quality and nutritional status. We believe the evidence supports the need to consider COVID-19 as (also) a case of malnutrition-enhanced disease and disease-related malnutrition, with added risk for persons both with and without obesity. Similarities with many other disease conditions further support recommendations to implement standard nutritional screening and care in COVID-19 patients, and they underscore the relevance of appropriate nutritional and lifestyle prevention policies to limit infection risk and mitigate the negative health impact of acute pandemic bouts.

Abstract
Timely decision-making in national and global health emergencies such as pandemics is critically important from various aspects. Especially, early identification of risk factors of contagious viral diseases can lead to efficient management of limited healthcare resources and saving lives by prioritizing at-risk patients. In this study, we propose a hybrid artificial intelligence (AI) framework to identify major chronic risk factors of novel, contagious diseases as early as possible at the time of pandemics. The proposed framework combines evolutionary search algorithms with machine learning and the novel explanatory AI (XAI) methods to detect the most critical risk factors, use them to predict patients at high risk of mortality, and analyze the risk factors at the individual level for each high-risk patient. The proposed framework was validated using data from a repository of electronic health records of early COVID-19 patients in the US. A chronological analysis of the chronic risk factors identified using our proposed approach revealed that those factors could have been identified months before they were determined by clinical studies and/or announced by the United States health officials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is now the third leading cause of death in the United States. Malnutrition in hospitalized patients increases risk of complications. However, the effect of malnutrition on outcomes in patients infected is unclear. This study aims to identify the impact of malnutrition on mortality and adverse hospital events in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. METHODS This study used data from the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), a COVID-19 repository containing harmonized, longitudinal electronic health record data from US health systems. Malnutrition was categorized into three groups based on condition diagnosis: (1) none documented, (2) history of malnutrition, and (3) hospital-acquired malnutrition. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to determine whether malnutrition was associated with mortality and adverse events, including mechanical ventilation, acute respiratory distress syndrome, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and hospital-acquired pressure injury, in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. RESULTS Of 343,188 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 11,206 had a history of malnutrition and 15,711 had hospital-acquired malnutrition. After adjustment for potential confounders, odds of mortality were significantly higher in patients with a history of malnutrition (odds ratio [OR], 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.63-1.79; P < 0.001) and hospital-acquired malnutrition (OR, 2.5; 95% CI, 2.4-2.6; P < 0.001). Adjusted odds of adverse hospital events were also significantly elevated in both malnutrition groups. CONCLUSIONS Results indicate the risk of mortality and adverse inpatient events in adults with COVID-19 is significantly higher in patients with malnutrition. Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of malnutrition could be a key component in improving outcomes in these patients.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly threatened healthcare systems worldwide. The worst-hit population has been represented by older people with underlying chronic comorbidities, while children and adolescents developed mild or asymptomatic forms of the disease. However, certain medical conditions (i.e., obesity, respiratory, or neurological or immune disorders) may increase the risk for poor health outcomes even in young and middle-aged people. Beyond the direct negative effects of the infection, the pandemic posed several health challenges through an increase in psycho-social issues (i.e., anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep alterations, loneliness, reduced assistance, and loss of income). Accordingly, the pandemic is negatively impacting the accumulation of the functional reserves of each individual, starting from early life. With the long-term effects of the pandemic to be seen in the coming years, clinicians must be prepared to manage such high clinical complexity of people they encounter, through the implementation of multidimensional and multidisciplinary interventions.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) is associated with malnutrition risk in hospitalised individuals. COVID-19 and malnutrition studies in large European cohorts are limited, and post-discharge dietary characteristics are understudied. This study aimed to assess the rates of and risk factors for ≥10% weight loss in inpatients with COVID-19, and the need for post-discharge dietetic support and the General Practitioner (GP) prescription of oral nutritional supplements, during the first COVID-19 wave in a large teaching hospital in the UK. Hospitalised adult patients admitted between March and June 2020 with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis were included in this retrospective cohort study. Demographic, anthropometric, clinical, biochemical, and nutritional parameters associated with ≥10% weight loss and post-discharge characteristics were described. Logistic regression models were used to identify risk factors for ≥10% weight loss and post-discharge requirements for ongoing dietetic input and oral nutritional supplement prescription. From the total 288 patients analysed (40% females, 72 years median age), 19% lost ≥ 10% of their admission weight. The length of hospital stay was a significant risk factor for ≥10% weight loss in multivariable analysis (OR 1.22; 95% CI 1.08-1.38; p = 0.001). In addition, ≥10% weight loss was positively associated with higher admission weight and malnutrition screening scores, dysphagia, ICU admission, and artificial nutrition needs. The need for more than one dietetic input after discharge was associated with older age and ≥10% weight loss during admission. A large proportion of patients admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 experienced significant weight loss during admission. Longer hospital stay is a risk factor for ≥10% weight loss, independent of disease severity, reinforcing the importance of repeated malnutrition screening and timely referral to dietetics.

Abstract
Objective Malnourished COVID-19 patients were prone to higher mortality and longer length of stay (LOS). This study aims to investigate the malnutrition risk prevalence in the COVID-19 patients and how other nutritional indicators are related to the clinical outcomes in a rehabilitation hospital. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study involved 174 COVID-19 patients during the rehabilitation phase. Malnutrition risk, nutritional indicators, mortality, and LOS were compared among different risk groups. Albumin, nutrition intake, and body mass index (BMI) were investigated for their effects on the clinical outcomes. Results The prevalence of malnutrition risk was 94.9%; those older were higher in malnutrition risk. BMI, energy and protein intakes decreased as the malnutrition risk increased. Albumin, energy and protein intakes were lower in the death group. The high malnutrition risk group and severely underweight patients had 2.7 times and 2.2 times higher in-hospital death, respectively. For subjects ≥75 years old, the odds ratio to death was 6.2 compared to those <75 years old. Conclusion We observed a high malnutrition risk of 94.9% in COVID-19 patients. Patients with malnutrition risk had a lower BMI, lower nutritional intake, and a higher chance of in-hospital death. These results reinforced the importance of nutrition management in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review primarily examines the evidence for areas of consensus and on-going uncertainty or controversy about diet and physical exercise approaches for in the post-CoVID. We propose an ideal dietary and physical activity approach that the patient with obesity should follow after CoVID-19 infection in order to reduce the clinical conditions associated with post-CoVID syndrome. RECENT FINDINGS The CoVID-19 disease pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, has spread all over the globe, infecting hundreds of millions of individuals and causing millions of death. It is also known to be is associated with several medical and psychological complications, especially in patients with obesity and weight-related disorders who in general pose a significant global public health problem, and in specific affected individuals are on a greater risk of developing poorer CoVID-19 clinical outcomes and experience a higher rate of mortality. Little is still known about the best nutritional approach to be adopted in this disease especially in the patients post-CoVID syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, no specific nutritional recommendations exist to manage in the patients post-CoVID syndrome. We report a presentation of nutritional therapeutic approach based on a ketogenic diet protocol followed by a transition to the Mediterranean diet in patients post-infection by CoVID, combined to a physical activity program to address conditions associated with post-CoVID syndrome.

Abstract
COVID-19 is still the biggest issue worldwide. Many dietary supplements on the market claim to have anti-COVID-19 effects without scientific evidence. To elucidate the prevalence of dietary supplement usage for the prevention of COVID-19, we conducted an online cross-sectional questionnaire survey among Japanese adults in January 2022. The prevalence of dietary supplement use for the prevention of COVID-19 was 8.3%, and there was no gender difference. We also conducted additional research on these dietary supplement users (1000 males and 1000 females). The most popular ingredient used was vitamin C (61.0%), with vitamin D (34.9%) and probiotics (33.4%) following. Half of these participants reported using supplements for more than one year. The information sources that reportedly led them to start using dietary supplements for the prevention of COVID-19 were the Internet (44.0%), television and radio (29.9%), and family or friends (26.0%), and these information sources differed among generations. In conclusion, some of the population used vitamin/mineral supplements for the prevention of COVID-19 that might be beneficial for their health, but some used ingredients with no scientifically proven effects against the virus at this time. Therefore, information-based scientific evidence is important to prevent the inappropriate use of dietary supplements by consumers.

Abstract
Background Fatigue with reduced tolerance to exercise is a common persistent long-lasting feature amongst COVID-19 survivors. The assessment of muscle function in this category of patients is often neglected. Aim. To evaluate the potential impact of a daily supplementation based on amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and plant extracts (Apportal®) on muscle function, body composition, laboratory parameters and self-rated health in a small group of COVID-19 survivors affected by fatigue. Methods Thirty participants were enrolled among patients affected by physical fatigue during or after acute COVID-19 and admitted to the post-COVID-19 outpatient service at Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli in Rome between 1st March 2021 and 30th April 2021. All participants were evaluated at first visit (t0) and at control visit (t1), after taking a daily sachet of Apportal® for 28 days. Muscle function was analyzed using hand grip strength test, exhaustion strength time and the number of repetitions at one-minute chair stand test. Body composition was assessed with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Laboratory parameters, including standard blood biochemistry and ferritin levels, were evaluated at the first visit and during the control visit. A quick evaluation of self-rated health, before COVID-19, at t0 and t1, was obtained through a visual analogue scale (VAS). Results Participants aged 60 years and older were 13 (43%). Females represented the 70% of the study sample. Participants hospitalized for COVID-19 with low-flow oxygen supplementation represented the 43.3% of the study sample while 3.3% received noninvasive ventilation (NIV) or invasive ventilation. Hand grip strength improved from 26.3 Kg to 28.9 Kg (p < 0.05) at t1 as compared to t0. The mean time of strength exhaustion increased from 31.7 s (sec) at t0 to 47.5 s at t1 (p < 0.05). Participants performed a higher number of repetitions (28.3 vs. 22.0; p < 0.05) during the one-minute chair stand test at t1 as compared to t0. A trend, although not significant, in reduction of ferritin levels was found after nutritional supplementation (94.4 vs. 84.3, respectively; p = 0.01). The self-rated health status increased by at least 13 points (t0, mean 57.6 ± 5.86; t1, mean 71.4 ± 6.73; p < 0.05). Conclusions After 28 days of nutritional supplementation with Apportal® in COVID-19 survivors affected by fatigue with reduced tolerance to exercise, we found a significant improvement in means of muscle strength and physical performance, associated with enhancement of self-rated health status between t0 and t1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant influence on nutritional status. There have been several studies on dietary habits and nutritional status in connection with COVID-19. However, there has been no research on the bibliometric analysis of these papers. Therefore, our objective was to assess the most relevant scientific research on nutrition and COVID-19, as well as to assess current hot themes. METHODS We obtained data from the Scopus database on June 30, 2021. Qualitative and quantitative analyzes were conducted based on the Scopus. Collaboration and term analysis was performed using VOSviewer software version 1.6.16. RESULTS At the time of data collection, there were 177,946 documents in COVID-19. Scopus found 1885 articles related to nutrition and COVID-19 after narrowing the search to those terms. This includes 1309 (69.44%) research articles, 268 (14.22%) review papers, and 308 other types of document. The USA was the largest producer, with 24.83% of the documents, followed by Italy with 11.88% (n = 224), the UK with 10.82% (n = 204), and China with 7.59% (n = 143). The most active institution was Sapienza Università di Roma (n = 30, 1.59%). The leading journal in COVID-19 nutrition research was Nutrients (n = 115, 6.10%). The article with 310 citations published by Di Renzo et al. in 2020 was the most influential reference. The hot topics were stratified into three clusters: (1) "Food security in the COVID-19 pandemic"; (2) "nutritional determinants and COVID-19 outcomes"; and (3) "changes in dietary habits during the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences". CONCLUSIONS This is the first bibliometric research to offer comprehensive information on COVID-19 and nutrition in the published literature. Research will likely be helpful to scholars and policymakers. This study sheds light on the growth and development of nutrition and covid-19-related research and should contribute to the expansion of the global frontier in the major hot topics, including "food security in the COVID-19 pandemic"; "nutritional determinants and COVID-19 outcomes"; and "changes in diet habits during the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences".

Nutritional Risk Assessment Scores Effectively Predict Mortality in Critically Ill Patients with Severe COVID-19. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14102105. Abstract
Background: Malnutrition predicts a worse outcome for critically ill patients. However, quick, easy-to-use nutritional risk assessment tools have not been adequately validated. Aims and Methods: The study aimed to evaluate the role of four biological nutritional risk assessment instruments (the Prognostic Nutritional Index—PNI, the Controlling Nutritional Status Score—CONUT, the Nutrition Risk in Critically Ill—NUTRIC, and the modified NUTRIC—mNUTRIC), along with CT-derived fat tissue and muscle mass measurements in predicting in-hospital mortality in a consecutive series of 90 patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit for COVID-19-associated ARDS. Results: In-hospital mortality was 46.7% (n = 42/90). Non-survivors had a significantly higher nutritional risk, as expressed by all four scores. All scores were independent predictors of mortality on the multivariate regression models. PNI had the best discriminative capabilities for mortality, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.77 for a cut-off value of 28.05. All scores had an AUC above 0.72. The volume of fat tissue and muscle mass were not associated with increased mortality risk. Conclusions: PNI, CONUT, NUTRIC, and mNUTRIC are valuable nutritional risk assessment tools that can accurately predict mortality in critically ill patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS.

Abstract
[Purpose] To determine whether short-duration, limited rehabilitation is effective in
patients with COVID-19. [Participants and Methods] Single-center, retrospective,
observational study. Thirty-six inpatients were classified into the three groups: a close
contact (CC) group with a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test (n=14); a
PCR–positive (PP) group (n=15); and a PCR–positive and transfer (PT) group with severe
COVID-19 patients who were transferred to an acute care hospital for treatment and then
returned to our hospital (n=7). Short-duration, limited rehabilitation was provided to the
CC and PP groups in isolated rooms by a therapist wearing full personal protective
equipment, and we assessed the changes in their activities of daily living. [Results] The
patients’ clinical characteristics at baseline were similar among the three groups.
Functional Independence Measure scores in the CC, PP, and PT groups were not different at
baseline (69 ± 29, 53 ± 26, and 63 ± 32), but differed after control of COVID-19 (63 ± 25,
47 ± 24, and 32 ± 19). Multivariate regression analysis showed that the implementation of
a customized self-exercise program and the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form at
baseline were independently associated with Functional Independence Measure score after
control of COVID-19. [Conclusion] These results suggest that even short-duration, limited
rehabilitation may be effective for preventing decreases in activities of daily living in
patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
Objectives The present study aimed to identify associations between extremes in body weight status (underweight and excess body weight) before a COVID-19 diagnosis and clinical outcomes in patients infected with SARS coronavirus type 2. Methods A multicenter cohort study was conducted in eight different states in northeastern Brazil. Demographic, clinical (previous diagnosis of comorbidities), and anthropometric (self-reported weight and height) data about individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 were collected. Outcomes included hospitalization, mechanical ventilation, and death. Multivariable logistic regression models, adjusted based on age, sex and previous comorbidities, were used to assess the effects of extremes in body weight status on clinical outcomes. Results A total of 1308 individuals were assessed (33.6% were elderly individuals). The univariable analyses showed that only hospitalization was more often observed among underweight (3.2% versus 1.2%) and overweight (68.1% versus 63.3%) individuals. In turn, cardiovascular diseases were more often observed in all clinical outcomes (hospitalization: 19.7% versus 4.8%; mechanical ventilation: 19.9% versus 13.5%; death: 21.8% versus 14.1%). Based on the multivariable analysis, body weight status was not associated with risk of hospitalization (underweight: odds ratio [OR]: 1.10; 95% confidence interval [CI] 95%, 0.50–2.41 and excess body weight: OR: 0.81; 95 CI, 0.57–1.14), mechanical ventilation (underweight: OR: 0.92; 95% CI, 0.52–1.62 and excess weight: OR: 0.90; 95% CI, 0.67–1.19), and death (underweight: OR: 0.61; 95% CI, 0.31–1.20 and excess body weight: OR 0.88; 95% CI, 0.63–1.23). Conclusions Being underweight and excess body weight were not independently associated with clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 in the herein analyzed cohort. This finding indicates that the association between these variables may be confounded by both age and comorbidities.

Abstract
Poor nutrition predisposes to infection, and various food compounds, such as micronutrients, are key elements of immune competence. A large number of scientific publications have suggested a role of phytochemicals, food bioactives and nutrition in combating the current coronavirus pandemic. Various dietary components and specific food supplements have been proposed to be helpful in the prevention or therapy of COVID-19. While findings in preclinical models suggest that food bioactives and micronutrients may potentially augment viral defense, evidence supporting antiviral and immunomodulatory efficacy of these compounds in the prevention or management of COVID-19 is non-existent. Large-scale epidemiological and well-designed clinical studies investigating dosage and combinations of food compounds in different age groups and populations are needed before any recommendations can be made. Both malnutrition and overnutrition can adversely affect the immune system. Malnutrition at population level appears to be associated with elevated rates of fatal outcomes of COVID-19. Obesity and non-communicable diseases have been found to be a prognostic risk factor associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes. A focus on obesity and nutrition-related chronic diseases should be a key element of public health. This approach would be more effective than the far less promising search for food bioactives with potential immune-supportive efficacy.

Abstract
COVID-19, resulting from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a major pandemic that the world is fighting. SARS-CoV-2 primarily causes lung infection by attaching to the ACE2 receptor on the alveolar epithelial cells. However, the ACE2 receptor is also present in intestinal epithelial cells, suggesting a link between nutrition, virulence and clinical outcomes of COVID-19. Respiratory viral infections perturb the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota is shaped by our diet; therefore, a healthy gut is important for optimal metabolism, immunology and protection of the host. Malnutrition causes diverse changes in the immune system by repressing immune responses and enhancing viral vulnerability. Thus, improving gut health with a high-quality, nutrient-filled diet will improve immunity against infections and diseases. This review emphasizes the significance of dietary choices and its subsequent effects on the immune system, which may potentially impact SARS-CoV-2 vulnerability.

Abstract
Background The identification of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) risk factors is requested to implement prevention strategies. Aim To explore the associations between the COVID-19 incidence and malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty, identified as potential risk factors in previous cross-sectional studies. Methods Malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty were assessed at the last available follow-up from the Sarcopenia and Physical Impairments with Advancing Age (SarcoPhAge) cohort (i.e., the fifth year that ended in 2019) according to the Mini-Nutritional Assessment short-form, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2), and the Fried criteria, respectively. Information regarding the COVID-19 was gathered by phone calls interviews in April 2021 to measure its self-declared incidence. Adjusted Cox regressions and Kaplan–Meier curves were performed. Results The present study included 241 participants [median age 75.6 (73.0–80.6) years, 63.1% women]. Among them, 27 participants (11.2%) developed the non-fatal Covid-19. No significant increased risks of COVID-19 were observed in patients with malnutrition [adjusted HR 1.14 (0.26–5.07)] and sarcopenia [adjusted HR 1.25 (0.35–4.42)]. Nevertheless, the incidence of COVID-19 was significantly higher in frail (44.4%) than in robust participants (8.5%) [Adjusted HR 7.01 (2.69–18.25)], which was confirmed by the Kaplan–Meier curves (p < 0.001). Among the frailty syndrome components, a low physical activity level was the only one significantly associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 [adjusted HR 5.18 (1.37–19.54)]. Conclusion Despite some limitations in the methodology of this study (i.e., limited sample size, COVID-19 incidence self-reported and not assessed systematically using objective measurements) requiring careful consideration, an increased risk to develop COVID-19 was observed in the presence of the frailty syndrome. Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with COVID-19 are susceptible to malnutrition, which is particularly concerning among critically ill patients. We evaluated the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) score in such patients and determined its relationship with the hospitalization outcome. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) of Shahid Faghihi Hospital, Shiraz, Iran, between February and March 2021. We assessed the nutritional status using NRS-2002 and determined disease severity with the APACHE II index. Demographic information, weight, height, clinical signs, previous illness, medications, biochemical test results, and history of anorexia and weight loss were recorded. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 18. RESULTS The mean age of 100 patients was 55.36 ± 18.86 years. According to NRS-2002, 30%, 29%, and 41% of patients were at low risk, moderate risk, and high risk of malnutrition, respectively. Age and BUN increased significantly with NRS-2002, while albumin and hematocrit followed the opposite trend (P < 0.001). Patients who died had lower albumin and hematocrit levels but higher age, NRS-2002 scores, and BUN/creatinine levels than those who recovered. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that for every unit increase in the NRS-2002 score, the odds of mortality increased by 354% (OR: 4.54, CI: 1.48, 13.95, P=0.008). CONCLUSION NRS-2002 is a valuable prognostic tool for critically ill COVID-19 patients, with each unit's rise in the score being associated with a 354% rise in the odds of mortality. Increased malnutrition risk was linked with higher age and BUN and lower albumin and hematocrit levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional status of patients with COVID-19 can affect the recovery process of patients; however, no nutritional scale was introduced to evaluate the nutritional status of the patients. Thus, the main objective of this study was to examine the usefulness of Nutritional status-2002 (NRS-2002) among COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 73 patients with definitive corona diagnosis admitted to the ICUs of Al-Zahra hospital, Isfahan, Iran in October 2020 to January 2021 were recruited. Dietary intake, NRS-2002, demographic, anthropometric and biochemical indices of patients were recorded. RESULTS The majority of patients were at risk for moderate (69.9%) to severe (12.3%) malnutrition. Daily calorie intake (P = .001) and albumin (P = .001) levels in deceased patients were significantly lower than the recovered group. A direct correlation between NRS-2002 and age (P < .001) and an inverse correlation with daily calorie intake (P = .002), albumin (P = .05) and PaO2 (P = .034) was found. Moreover, there is a strong correlation between NRS-2002 score and chance of death among COVID-19 patients (OR=34.5, 95%CI:(5.2 - 228.93), P-value<0.001). Likewise, the levels of bilirubin direct (OR=8, 95%CI:(1.30 - 49.38), P-value=0.025) and creatine-phosphokinase (OR=0.9, 95%CI:(0.99 - 1.00), P-value=0.035) have a significant direct association with chance of death. CONCLUSION Results showed patients with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU did not have appropriate nutritional status and mortality was higher among patients with lower amounts of the serum albumin and daily calorie intakes. Furthermore, there is a strong association between the NRS-2002 index and the chance of mortality in these patients.

Abstract
Post-acute consequences of COVID-19, also termed long COVID, include signs and symptoms persisting for more than 12 weeks with prolonged multisystem involvement; most often, however, malnutrition is ignored. METHOD The objective was to analyze persistent symptoms, nutritional status, the evolution of muscle strength and performance status (PS) at 6 months post-discharge in a cohort of COVID-19 survivors. RESULTS Of 549 consecutive patients hospitalized for COVID-19 between 1 March and 29 April 2020, 23.7% died and 288 patients were at home at D30 post-discharge. At this date, 136 of them (47.2%) presented persistent malnutrition, a significant decrease in muscle strength or a PS ≥ 2. These patients received dietary counseling, nutritional supplementation, adapted physical activity guidance or physiotherapy assistance, or were admitted to post-care facilities. At 6 months post-discharge, 91.0% of the 136 patients (n = 119) were evaluated and 36.0% had persistent malnutrition, 14.3% complained of a significant decrease in muscle strength and 14.9% had a performance status > 2. Obesity was more frequent in patients with impairment than in those without (52.8% vs. 31.0%; p = 0.0071), with these patients being admitted more frequently to ICUs (50.9% vs. 31.3%; p = 0.010). Among those with persistent symptoms, 10% had psychiatric co-morbidities (mood disorders, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress syndrome), 7.6% had prolonged pneumological symptoms and 4.2% had neurological symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Obese subjects as well as patients who have stayed in intensive care have a higher risk of functional loss or undernutrition 6 months after a severe COVID infection. Malnutrition and loss of muscle strength should be considered in the clinical assessment of these patients.

Abstract
The pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has shocked world health authorities generating a global health crisis. The present study discusses the main finding in nutrition sciences associated with COVID-19 in the literature. We conducted a consensus critical review using primary sources, scientific articles, and secondary bibliographic indexes, databases, and web pages. The method was a narrative literature review of the available literature regarding nutrition interventions and nutrition-related factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main search engines used in the present research were PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar. We found how the COVID-19 lockdown promoted unhealthy dietary changes and increases in body weight of the population, showing obesity and low physical activity levels as increased risk factors of COVID-19 affection and physiopathology. In addition, hospitalized COVID-19 patients presented malnutrition and deficiencies in vitamin C, D, B12 selenium, iron, omega-3, and medium and long-chain fatty acids highlighting the potential health effect of vitamin C and D interventions. Further investigations are needed to show the complete role and implications of nutrition both in the prevention and in the treatment of patients with COVID-19.
