Residues and source identification of persistent organic pollutants in farmland soils irrigated by effluents from biological treatment plants

Silicon's Influence on Polyphenol and Flavonoid Profiles in Pea (Pisum sativum L.) under Cadmium Exposure in Hydroponics: A Study of Metabolomics, Extraction Efficacy, and Antimicrobial Properties of Extracts

The current study aimed to investigate the impact of silicon (Si) supplementation in the form of Na2SiO3 on the metabolome of peas under normal conditions and following exposure to cadmium (Cd) stress. Si is known for its ability to enhance stress tolerance in various plant species, including the mitigation of heavy metal toxicity. Cd, a significant contaminant, poses risks to both human health and the environment. The study focused on analyzing the levels of bioactive compounds in different plant parts, including the shoot, root, and pod, to understand the influence of Si supplementation on their biosynthesis. Metabolomic analysis of pea samples was conducted using a targeted HPLC/MS approach, enabling the identification of 15 metabolites comprising 9 flavonoids and 6 phenolic acids. Among the detected compounds, flavonoids, such as flavon and quercetin, along with phenolic acids, including chlorogenic acid and salicylic acid, were found in significant quantities. The study compared Si supplementation at concentrations of 1 and 2 mM, as well as Cd stress conditions, to evaluate their effects on the metabolomic profile. Additionally, the study explored the extraction efficiency of three different methods: accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), and maceration (MAC). The results revealed that SFE was the most efficient method for extracting polyphenolic compounds from the pea samples. Moreover, the study investigated the stability of polyphenolic compounds under different pH conditions, ranging from 4.0 to 6.0, providing insights into the influence of the pH on the extraction and stability of bioactive compounds.

Remediation of heavily PAHs-contaminated soil with high mineral content from a coking plant using surfactant-enhanced soil washing

This study investigated the effectiveness of various surfactants at different concentrations in removing high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from soil with high mineral content, focusing on the impact of surfactant treatment on the mobility of the residual PAHs in soil. The results revealed that the cationic surfactant (CTMAB) inhibited removal of PAHs in the whole tested concentration range of 0.1-8 g/L. In contrast, the non-ionic and anionic surfactants (Triton X-100 and SDBS) significantly enhanced removal of PAHs as their amendment concentrations reached 2 g/L and above. Triton X-100 exhibited steadily increased efficacy with increasing amendment concentrations and maintained favorable solubilization capability when continuously amended, making it the preferable choice for remediating PAHs-contaminated soil. Surfactant and water washing processes altered soil physicochemical properties by removing some clay minerals (e.g., faujasite) and organic matter that can bind or sequester PAHs, potentially increasing their extractability and bioavailability in the washed soil, thereby posing higher ecological risks compared to the original one. Although soil washing decreased retention of the remaining PAHs in soil, it did not significantly impact PAHs release from soil by flowing water. These findings provide insights into the long-term effectiveness and ecological impacts of surfactant-enhanced washing as a potential remediation technique for PAHs-contaminated soil.

Heavy metals contamination in vegetables irrigated with wastewater: a case study of underdeveloping regions of Pakistan

Irrigation of food crops with untreated wastewater leads to the accumulation of heavy metals in their edible parts. Exposure to toxic elements through consumption of contaminated vegetables even at very low concentration is becoming a serious problem for human health in many countries. This issue of heavy metals contamination needs great attention especially in Pakistan where irrigation by wastewater has become a common practice in urban and periurban areas. The present study was conducted to assess the contamination of different heavy metals including nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) in vegetables irrigated with wastewater in different districts of Punjab (Pakistan) like, Faisalabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Multan, Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur during years 2016-2019. The maximum contamination factor (Ni, 1.39; Cd, 5.86; Pb, 3.99; Cr, 2.24), pollution load index (2.92) and degree of contamination (13.48) were observed in wastewater irrigated agricultural soils of district Gujranwala as compared to other districts. Mean metal concentration in vegetables grown with untreated wastewater and transfer factor varied with plant type, frequency of irrigation and soils types/series of different districts of Punjab. The highest metal contamination was observed in Gujranwala where 44% vegetable samples were contaminated with Ni, 87% with Cd, 97% with Pb and 88% with Cr. Radar analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis showed that mustard leaves, spinach and lettuce were more contaminated vegetables compared to other vegetables. This study contributes to the evidence-based conclusion that cultivation of vegetable with untreated wastewater should be prohibited and required treatment of wastewater is needed.

Impact of Cadmium and Lead Exposure on Camel Testicular Function: Environmental Contamination and Reproductive Health

The free grazing habits of camels from various sources may cause heavy metals to bioaccumulate in their tissues and organs, possibly resulting in higher amounts of these toxic substances in their bodies over time. The aim of this study was to assess the exposure impact of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) on bull camels of the Lassi breed, aged 7 to 8 years, at a site near the industrial area and another two non-industrial sites, to analyze the presence of heavy metals. Samples from three sites were collected from thirty camels (n = 10/each), soil and water (n = 30), and five different plants (n = 15/each) for analysis. Testes were collected for atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Serum samples were obtained to measure testosterone levels by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Samples were obtained from plants, soil, water, blood, serum and urine for AAS. According to the results, the testes' weight, length, width, and volume significantly decreased at the industrial site compared with the other two sites as a result of exposure to Cd and Pb. Additionally, blood testosterone concentrations were considerably lower at the industrial site, indicating a detrimental impact on testicular steroidogenesis. The histological investigation of the industrial site indicated structural disturbances, including seminiferous tubule degeneration and shedding, cellular debris in seminiferous tubules, lining epithelium depletion, and vacuolation. Elevated amounts of Cd and Pb were found at the industrial site when analyzed using water, soil, plants, testes, serum, and urine. These findings demonstrate the adverse effects of Pb and Cd exposure on camel testicular function, including decreased weight and altered steroidogenesis. These findings are essential for understanding the impact of exposure to Pb and Cd on camel reproductive function and for developing successful prevention and management plans for these exposures in this species.

Impact of Potentially Toxic Compounds in Cow Milk: How Industrial Activities Affect Animal Primary Productions

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) frequently coexist in soils near industrial areas and sometimes in environmental compartments directly linked to feed (forage) and food (milk) production. However, the distribution of these pollutants along the dairy farm production chain is unclear. Here, we analyzed soil, forage, and milk samples from 16 livestock farms in Spain: several PTEs and PAHs were quantified. Farms were compared in terms of whether they were close to (<5 km) or far away from (>5 km) industrial areas. The results showed that PTEs and PAHs were enriched in the soils and forages from farms close to industrial areas, but not in the milk. In the soil, the maximum concentrations of PTEs reached 141, 46.1, 3.67, 6.11, and 138 mg kg^-1 for chromium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead, respectively, while fluoranthene (172.8 µg kg^-1) and benzo(b)fluoranthene (177.4 µg kg^-1) were the most abundant PAHs. Principal component analysis of the soil PTEs suggested common pollution sources for iron, arsenic, and lead. In the forage, the maximum contents of chromium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead were 32.8, 7.87, 1.31, 0.47, and 7.85 mg kg^-1, respectively. The PAH found in the highest concentration in the feed forage was pyrene (120 µg kg^-1). In the milk, the maximum PTE levels were much lower than in the soil or the feed forages: 74.1, 16.1, 0.12, 0.28, and 2.7 µg kg^-1 for chromium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead, respectively. Neither of the two milk samples exceeded the 20 µg kg^-1 limit for lead set in EU 1881/2006. Pyrene was the most abundant PAH found in the milk (39.4 µg kg^-1), while high molecular weight PAHs were not detected. For PTEs, the results showed that soil-forage transfer factors were higher than forage-milk ratios. Our results suggest that soils and forages around farms near industries, as well as the milk produced from those farms, have generally low levels of PTE and PAH contaminants.

Status, distribution, source, and risk of polychlorinated biphenyl levels in soils of five cities from the Hexi Corridor, Northwest China

Few studies have been performed on the persistent organic pollutant contamination in soil from the plateau and remote areas, particularly the mid-latitude arid and semi-arid regions of Northwest China. The occurrence, spatial distribution, source, and potential risk of 12 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in soil collected from five Hexi Corridor cities in Northwest China. All of the PCBs were detected individually in the soil samples. The concentration of Σ₁₂PCBs in the Hexi Corridor ranged from 2.0 to 148.5 ng/g, with an average of 21.3 ng/g. The tetra-CBs and hexa-CBs were the dominant PCB components in the soil. Higher PCB levels were found in the industrial city of Jiuquan, and the fewest PCBs were detected at Jinchang. Source analysis by principal component analysis showed that the dominant sources of PCBs were automobile exhaust, paint additives, insulation materials, and other industrial products. The carcinogenic health risk of PCBs in the Hexi Corridor soil was within acceptable levels, but the exposure risk of PCBs in soil for children was higher than that for adults.

A comprehensive review of heavy metal pollution in the coastal areas of Bangladesh: abundance, bioaccumulation, health implications, and challenges

The coastal zone of Bangladesh, with a population density of 1278 people per square kilometer, is under serious threat due to heavy metal pollution. To date, many studies have been conducted on the heavy metal contamination in soils, water, aquatic animals, and plants in the coastal zone of Bangladesh; however, the available information is dispersed. In this study, previous findings on the contamination levels, distributions, risks, and sources of heavy metals in sediments and organisms were summarized for the first time to present the overall status of heavy metal pollution along coastal regions. Earlier research found that the concentrations of various heavy metals (HMs), particularly Co, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni in water, sediment, and fish in most coastal locations, were above their permissible limits. High concentrations of HMs were observed in sediments and water, like Cr of 55 mg/kg and 86.93 mg/l in the ship-breaking areas and Karnaphuli River, respectively, in coastal regions of Bangladesh. Heavy metals severely contaminated the Karnaphuli River estuary and ship-breaking area on the Sitakundu coast, where sediments were the ultimate sink of high concentrations of metals. Sedentary or bottom-dwelling organisms like gastropods and shrimp had higher levels of heavy metals than other organisms. As a result, the modified PRISMA review method was used to look at the critical research gap about heavy metal pollution in Bangladesh's coastal areas by analyzing the current research trends and bottlenecks.

Reduction effect of individual N, P, K fertilization on antibiotic resistance genes in reclaimed water irrigated soil

The transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil under reclaimed water irrigation poses a potential environmental risk. Regulation of NPK fertilizer could influence the behavior of bacterial communities, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and soil properties, which determine the fate of ARGs. To identify the key element in NPK fertilizer and realize efficient regulation, we explored the effect of individual N, P, K fertilization on ARG variation in tomato rhizosphere and bulk soils. Compared with an unfertilized treatment, N fertilization resulted in greater decreases in the abundance of ARGs (decreases of 24.06%-73.09%) than did either P fertilization (increases of up to 35.84%, decreases of up to 58.80%) or K fertilization (decreases of 13.47%-72.47%). The influence of different forms of N (CO(NH₂)₂, NaNO₃, and NH₄HCO₃), P (Ca(H₂PO₄)₂ and CaMgO₄P⁺), and K (KCl and K₂(SO₄)) fertilizers was also investigated in this study, and showed the influence of NaNO₃, CaMgO₄P⁺, and K₂(SO₄) on reducing ARGs abundance was greater in different types of N, P, K fertilizers. Bacterial communities showed the strongest response to N fertilization. The reduced bacterial diversity and abundance of ARG-host and non-host organisms explained the decline of total ARG abundance in soil. In soils fertilized with either P or K, the effect of soil properties, especially total nitrogen and pH, on ARG variation was greater than that of bacterial community and MGEs. These results suggest that N regulation of in NPK fertilizer may be an effective way to reduce the risks of ARGs in soil associated with reclaimed water irrigation.

The impact of national energy structure on the concentrations, environmental behavior, and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in riverine and coastal sediments of the Beibu Gulf, China

In this study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in sediments of the Beibu Gulf in 2017 to investigate sources and a risk assessment. The results showed the total PAH concentration (∑₁₆PAHs) in sediments of the Beibu Gulf in 2017 (17.6 ± 16.7 ng g^-1) was significantly lower than that in 2010 (47.8 ± 27.4 ng g^-1). The ∑₁₆PAHs concentrations varied spatially within the Beibu Gulf, impacted by point source pollution. The results of adsorption/desorption and water-air partitioning suggest that the environmental behavior of PAHs in the Beibu Gulf is affected by atmospheric deposition and sediment-water partitioning. A risk assessment showed that the PAHs in sediments were within a safety threshold. Three source apportionment methods show that oil spills and oil and biomass burning were the most important (>83.8%) sources of PAHs in sediments of the Beibu Gulf.

Remediation of soils and sediments polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: To immobilize, mobilize, or degrade?

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generated due to incomplete burning of organic substances. Use of fossil fuels is the primary anthropogenic cause of PAHs emission in natural settings. Although several PAH compounds exist in the natural environmental setting, only 16 of these compounds are considered priority pollutants. PAHs imposes several health impacts on humans and other living organisms due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic properties. The specific characteristics of PAHs, such as their high hydrophobicity and low water solubility, influence their active adsorption onto soils and sediments, affecting their bioavailability and subsequent degradation. Therefore, this review first discusses various sources of PAHs, including source identification techniques, bioavailability, and interactions of PAHs with soils and sediments. Then this review addresses the remediation technologies adopted so far of PAHs in soils and sediments using immobilization techniques (capping, stabilization, dredging, and excavation), mobilization techniques (thermal desorption, washing, electrokinetics, and surfactant assisted), and biological degradation techniques. The pros and cons of each technology are discussed. A detailed systematic compilation of eco-friendly approaches used to degrade PAHs, such as phytoremediation, microbial remediation, and emerging hybrid or integrated technologies are reviewed along with case studies and provided prospects for future research.

Metabolic process and spatial partition dynamics of Atrazine in an estuary-to-bay system, Jiaozhou bay

The spatial distributions of atrazine and six types of metabolites in water, suspended particulate sediment (SPS), and surface sediment in an estuary-to-bay system were analyzed. The water distance of metabolites demonstrated that degradation was more active in coastal zone and the Desisopropylatrazine had the shortest half-distance of 1.6 Km from the river mouth. The dechlorination-hydroxylation metabolites were the dominant pollutants in the bay and the Didealkyl-atrazine (DDA), Deisopropylhydroxy-atrazine (DIHA), and Deethylhydroxy-atrazine (DEHA) had higher concentrations in all three mediums. The DDA had the biggest content (6.58 ng/g) in the coastal sediment. The DIHA was the only pollutant had bigger concentration during the transport, and the others continually degraded with smaller value. The spatial distributions of pollutants in sediment had different patterns in water with SPS. The water-particle phase partition coefficient (K_p) analysis indicated that the partition process was more active in the estuary than the bay, and the metabolites had stronger capacity than atrazine. The correlations between K_p with octanol-water partitioning coefficient showed their physic-chemical properties were the important factors for vertical partition between seawater with sediment. The correlations with marine environmental factors demonstrated that the metabolite type was the direct factor for the redistributions during the transport.

Distribution, fate and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmosphere and surface water of multiple coral reef regions from the South China Sea: A case study in spring-summer

Our previous study revealed PAHs' wide occurrence in corals from multiple coral reef regions (CRRs) in the South China Sea. However, little is known about their occurrence, distribution, fate, and sources in the ambient environment of these CRRs. This study aimed to resolve these research gaps. The results showed ∑₁₅PAHs (total concentrations of 15 US EPA priority controlled PAHs exclude naphthalene) in the atmosphere (gas-phase: 0.31-49.6 ng m^-3; particle-phase: 2.6-649 pg m^-3) were mainly influenced by air mass origins. Southwesterly wind caused higher ∑₁₅PAHs than the southeasterly wind. The ∑₁₅PAHs in seawater from the nearshore (462 ± 244 ng L^-1) was higher than that from offshore Zhongsha Islands (80.5 ± 72.1 ng L^-1) because of the effect of terrigenous pollution and ocean current. Source apportionment indicated that the mixed sources of spilled oil and combustion from neighboring countries were the main contributors to PAHs in these CRRs. The total deposition fluxes showed that PAHs tended to migrate from the atmosphere to seawater. Global warming may inhibit this process, but PAHs still have a migration pattern of atmosphere-ocean-corals, which will further increase the environmental pressure on coral reef ecology.

Impacts alum DWTPs sludge discharge and changes in flow regime of the Nile River on the quality of surface water and cultivated soils in Fayoum watershed, Egypt

Discharge of Drinking Water Treatment Plants sludge directly on surface waters without any treatment is becoming an important issue in most countries around the world, behavior is not only affecting on the water quality, but also on soil and crops. This study investigated the effect of discharge of alum sludge and the variation in the level of the Nile water (flow regime) on water and soil qualities. The water samples were analyzed for physical, chemical and microbiological parameters. In winter (closure season), the mean values of EC, TDS, major ions, pH, DO and total algae count were higher than in summer. In summer (flooding season), it was noticed that the mean values of SiO₂, metals, COD, BOD, TOC, nutrients and bacteriological parameters exceed winter season values. Moreover, the concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn were above WHO permissible limits and the concentrations of aggregate organic parameters exceed the FAO permissible limits in sites near the areas of sludge discharge. Most of water samples exceed the national guidelines. For soil, our findings showed that the concentrations of metals in soil samples collected from areas irrigated from canals receiving alum sludge are more (two-three times) than their concentrations from the pure sites. However, Pb concentration in the contaminated soil reaches ten times more than in the pure one. The management of sludge disposal becomes an urgent priority to save waterways, soil and crops from pollution. Finally, the variation in water flow during the winter closure period with reduction by ≈15 BCM is similar to the same reduction in the Nile flow when the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam starts operation. This indicates that the long-term reduction in water flow due to the construction of this dam may cause serious environmental changes in the Nile River in Egypt.

Irrigation water of different sources affects fruit quality attributes and heavy metals contents of un-grafted and commercial mango cultivars

In peri-urban areas, waste water is used to irrigate orchards due to scarcity of fresh water which increases heavy metals contents in soils, leaves and fruits. Due to excessive waste water irrigations, heavy metals enter into the food chain, which eventually causes metabolic disorders in humans. The present study was envisaged to investigate the effects of canal, tubewell and sewage water on the quality of mango fruits and heavy metals accumulation in soils, leaves and fruits. Leaf and fruit samples from an un-grafted (Desi mango) and six commercial cultivars of mango (Anwar Rataul, Aman Dusehri, Sufaid Chaunsa, Samar Bahisht Chaunsa, Kala Chaunsa and Anwar Rataul Late) grafted on Desi mango were collected from different mango orchards located in peri-urban areas of Multan (Pakistan) and analyzed for some physico-chemical attributes and heavy metals contents. Soil samples were also taken from these orchards irrigated with different water sources to assess the soils' heavy metals status. A significant variation was observed among the mango cultivars for their physico-chemical attributes. Sewage water irrigation improved total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content, total phenolics, total carotenoids, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity of mango fruits. However, it did not affect fruit weight and shelf life. Among the heavy metals, copper and nickel contents were found in greater amounts in soils, leaves and fruits of sewage water irrigated orchards than canal and tubewell water irrigated ones. However, zinc and cadmium were not detected in any soil, water, leaf or fruit sample. The interaction among the sources of irrigation and the mango cultivars was significant for copper accumulation in different soil layers, copper and nickel accumulation in leaves of different mango cultivars, and fruit weight, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content, total flavonoids and shelf life of mango fruits.

A new approach to establish safe levels of available metals in soil with respect to potential health hazard of human

Safe levels of extractable pollutant elements in soil have not been universally established. Prediction of metal solubility in polluted soils and the subsequent transfer of these metals from soil pore water to the human food supply via crops are required for effective risk assessment from polluted soils. Thus an attempt has been made to develop a novel approach to protect human health from exposure to toxic metals through assessing risk from metal polluted soils utilised for agriculture. In this study, we assess the relative efficacy of various forms of 'free ion activity model' (FIAM) for predicting the concentration of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in spinach and wheat as example crops, thereby providing an assessment of risk to human health from consumption of these crops. Free metal ion activity in soil solution was estimated using the Windermere Humic Aqueous Model VII (WHAM-VII) and the Baker soil test. Approximately 91, 81, 75, 94 and 70% of the variability in Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn and Cu content, respectively, of spinach could be described by a FIAM using an estimate of the free ion activity of the metals provided by WHAM-VII. Owing to the different concentration of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) used in the present experiment, higher prediction coefficients were obtained using EDTA (0.05 M), rather than DTPA (0.005 M), as the metal extractant in an integrated solubility-FIAM model. Out of three formulations, the FIAM, based on free ion activity of metals in soil pore water, determined from solution extracted with Rhizon samplers, was distinctly superior to the other formulations in predicting metal uptake by spinach and wheat. A safe level of extractable metal in soil was prescribed using a hazard quotient derived from predicted plant metal content and estimated dietary intake of wheat and spinach by a human population.

Concentrations, distributions, sources, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in topsoils around a petrochemical industrial area in Algiers (Algeria)

Fifty-five samples were collected from topsoils around a petrochemical industrial area at the east of Algiers (Algeria) and analyzed for 16EPA priority PAHs in the aim to determine the concentrations, the distributions, and the possible sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results of the quantification are then devoted to the assessment of the potential risks as the toxicity, the risk for the ecosystem, and the risk for the human health. The sampling sites were classified into four categories: rural, suburban, urban, and industrial-urban. A new extraction method based on the insertion of a preliminary step, using hot water, was proposed to improve the extraction efficiency. Principal component analysis (PCA) and selected diagnostic ratio of PAHs were used to investigate the source apportionment of these PAHs. The potential toxicity, the ecological, and human health risk of PAHs in soil were estimated using the toxic equivalent quotient, the risk quotient, and the total lifetime cancer risk (TLCR) methods, respectively. The proposed new protocol gave improved recovery rates for the sixteen EPA PAHs particularly for low molecular weight PAHs, with satisfactory repeatability (RSD < 10%). The Σ16PAHs concentrations were varied from 143.73 to 4575.65 μg kg^-1 with a mean value of 1209.56 μg kg^-1. Σ16PAH concentrations found for the industrial areas would be 2 times higher than for urban soils and 3 times higher than for the rural soils. The biplots of PCA and the five diagnostic ratios suggested that the most sources of PAHs in the rural, the suburban, and the urban areas are traffic emissions, biomass burning, and coal combustion sources. Some points of the urban-industrial area are from the petroleum source. The found Σ16PAH concentrations and theirs calculated TEQs showed the following trend: industrial-urban > urban > suburban >rural. The potential cancer of human health risks calculated through TLCR results indicated that the exposure to the 7EPA PAH-contaminated soils produces negligible cancer risk to human health.

Evaluation of a Reduced Graphene Oxide-Sb Nanoparticles Electrochemical Sensor for the Detection of Cadmium and Lead in Chamomile Tea

The development of electroanalytical sensors for heavy metals detection in complex matrices holds great interest. Herein, a sensor based on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified with antimony nanoparticles (Sb) was developed for the electrochemical detection of divalent cadmium ions (Cd2+) and lead ions (Pb2+). The simultaneous determination of both metals covered a range of 0.1 to 3.0 µmol L−1, with limits of detection (LOD) of 70.03 and 45.50 nmol L−1 for Cd2+ and Pb2+, respectively. For the individual detection, LOD of 20.50 nmol L−1 (Cd2+) and 2.01 nmol L−1 (Pb2+) were found. The analytical performance of this new sensor in detecting both metals in chamomile tea samples was satisfactorily evaluated.

Fire Phoenix facilitates phytoremediation of PAH-Cd co-contaminated soil through promotion of beneficial rhizosphere bacterial communities

Pot experiments were conducted in a growth chamber to evaluate the phytoremediation efficiency and rhizosphere regulation mechanism of Fire Phoenix (a mixture of Festuca L.) in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-cadmium (PAH-Cd) co-contaminated soils. Plant biomass, removal rates of PAHs and Cd, soil enzyme activity, and soil bacterial community were determined. After 150 days of planting, the removal rates of the total 4 PAHs and Cd reached 64.57% and 40.93% in co-contaminated soils with low-PAH (104.79-144.87 mg·kg^-1), and 68.29% and 25.40% in co-contaminated soils with high-PAH (169.17-197.44 mg·kg^-1), respectively. The polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity decreased in soils having Fire Phoenix, while the dehydrogenase (DHO) activity increased as the changes of DHO activity had a strong positive correlation with the removal rates of PAHs and Cd in the low-PAH soils (r = 0.862 (P < 0.006) and 0.913 (P < 0.002), respectively). Meanwhile, successional changes in the bacterial communities were detected using high-throughput 454 Gs-FLX pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA, and these changes were especially apparent for the co-contaminated soils with the low PAH concentration. The Fire Phoenix could promote the growth of Mycobacterium, Dokdonella, Gordonia and Kaistobacter, which played important roles in PAHs degradation or Cd dissipation. These results indicated that Fire Phoenix could effectively motivate the soil enzyme and bacterial community and enhance the potential for phytoremediation of PAH-Cd co-contaminated soils.

Contamination of soil with potentially toxic metals and their bioaccumulation in wheat and associated health risk

The present study was conducted to investigate the concentrations of potential toxic metals (PTMs) in agricultural soil (n = 25) and their bioaccumulation in wheat crop (n = 25) collected from alongside the Kurram River, Pakistan. The highest concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in soil samples were 0.16, 19.5, 14.7, 46.5, 13.5, 14.5, 14.0, and 19.7 mg kg^-1, respectively. In the edible tissues of cultivated wheat crop, the highest concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 0.15, 10.00, 8.75, 22.25, 11.00, 11.25, 10.50, and 7.50 mg kg^-1, respectively. The selected PTM concentrations in soil samples were observed within their respective permissible limits set by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) China, while in wheat crops, the Cr and Pb concentrations were above the permissible limits of both FAO and SEPA China. The results showed that the orders of PTMs were Fe > Zn > Cr > Cu > Ni > Pb > Mn in soil and Fe > Ni > Mn > Pb > Cr > Cu > Zn in wheat. The highest PTM concentrations were reported in the sample collected near dumping sites. The results of different soil pollution indices including geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), and enrichment factor (EF) indicated that the soil of the study area was moderately to severely contaminated. The ADI values of wheat crops were less than 1, while the HQ varied among different PTMs with the highest value of 2.118 for Pb, and the lowest for Zn (0.007). The results indicated that anthropogenic intervention has made a substantial contribution to soil contamination with PTMs and subsequent uptake by wheat, which may exert potential human health risk.

Determination and Assessment of the Toxic Heavy Metal Elements Abstracted from the Traditional Plant Cosmetics and Medical Remedies: Case Study of Libya

Henna and walnut tree bark are widely used by Libyan women as cosmetics. They may contain lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As), which, in turn, pose a high risk to their health. This study aims to determine the levels of Pb, Cd and As in henna and walnut tree bark products sold in Libyan markets. The products were analyzed for their Pb, Cd and As content by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after a microwave acid digestion. The results showed a significant difference between the henna and walnut tree bark samples in terms of their heavy metals content (p < 0.05). The highest heavy metal concentrations were observed in the walnut tree bark samples whereas the lowest was observed in the henna samples. In addition, 60% of the henna and 90% of the walnut tree bark samples contained Pb levels and approximately 80% of the henna and 90% the walnut tree bark samples contained Cd levels, which are much higher than the tolerance limit. However, As concentrations in all the samples were lower. The results indicated that such cosmetics expose consumers to high levels of Pb and Cd and hence, to potential health risks. Thus, studying the sources and effects of heavy metals in such cosmetics is strongly recommended.

Dataset on assessment of heavy metals contamination in multi-environmental samples from Patna, India

Accumulation of heavy metals in vegetables adversely affects the well-being of human health. In this study, we investigated the heavy metals (Hg, Zn, Cu, Pb and Mn) contamination in different environmental samples collected from five major sites (Gaighat, Paijawa, Danapur, Ranipur and Marchi) of Patna. In all the samples concentration of manganese (Mn) was found to be higher in soil samples. The concentration of heavy metals in soil samples were in the order Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb > Hg in water sample; Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu > Hg, and in vegetables Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb > Hg. In all sites, majority of heavy metal were within the permissible limits except the Zn and Pb. The Zn and Pb contents in vegetables and soil were measured above the permissible limit recommended by WHO/FAO (2007) and Indian standard. The bioconcentration factors (BCFs) for the heavy metal transfer from soils to vegetables are analysed and were ranked in the order of Hg > Pb > Zn > Cu > Mn. The estimated daily intake of metals suggested low health risk despite higher metal content in soil/vegetables. The metal pollution index (MPI) analysis showed high MPI for spinach (15.6) followed by red spinach (14.0) whereas beans (8.6) showed lower metal pollution index.

Heavy Metal and Metalloid Pollution of Soil, Water and Foods in Bangladesh: A Critical Review

Bangladesh is a densely populated developing country. Both industrialization and geological sources have caused widespread heavy metal and metalloid pollution in Bangladesh, which is now posing substantial threats to the local people. In this review, we carried out one of the most exhaustive literature analyses on the current status of Bangladesh heavy metal and metalloid pollution, covering water, soil, and foods. Analysis showed that soils near high traffic and industrial areas contain high concentrations of heavy metals and metalloids. Agricultural land and vegetables in sewage-irrigated areas were also found to be heavy metal- and metalloid-contaminated. River water, sediment, and fish from the Buriganga, Turag, Shitalakhya, and Karnaphuli rivers are highly contaminated with cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr). Particularly, groundwater arsenic (As) pollution associated with high geological background levels in Bangladesh is well reported and is hitherto the largest mass poisoning in the world. Overall, the contamination levels of heavy metals and metalloids vary among the cities, with industrial areas being most polluted. In all, this review provides a quantitative identification of the As, Pb, Cd, and Cr contamination hotspots in Bangladesh based on the literature, which may be useful to environmental restorationists and local policy makers.

An Electronic Nose Based Method for the Discrimination of Weathered Petroleum-Derived Products

In recent years pollution due to hydrocarbon spills has increased markedly as a result of the numerous advances in technologies and industrial processes. Anthropogenic activities (accidental or illegal) are responsible for most of these incidents. In some cases, the spills are not detected at the moment they occur and the contaminants are subjected to different degradation phenomena that may change the chemical composition of the hydrocarbon over time. An incorrect or ineffective identification of the spill could lead to significant consequences, bearing in mind that most spills are hazardous to the environment. In the present work the capacity of the analytical technique based on the Electronic Nose (eNose) combined with chemometrics in the identification and discrimination of different weathered petroleum-derived products (PDPs) was studied. Different volumes (40 &mu;L and 80 &mu;L) of PDPs (gasoline, diesel, and paraffin) were poured onto different supports (wood, cork, paper, and cotton sheet) and subjected to a natural weathering process by evaporation for one month. The porosity of the support was also studied. The application of linear discriminant analysis allowed the full discrimination of the samples according to the presence/absence of PDP and a 97.7% of correct discrimination of the different PDPs regardless of the weathering time, support or volume used. The results show that the system is capable of detecting and discriminating the presence of petroleum-derived products in any of the situations studied.

Subcellular distribution and biotransformation of phenanthrene in pakchoi after inoculation with endophytic Pseudomonas sp. as probed using HRMS coupled with isotope-labeling

Contamination of food-crops with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) poses a grave concern to food safety, especially when PAHs are internalized. We have demonstrated in our previous study that inoculation of crop with a phenanthrene-degrading endophytic Pseudomonas sp. Ph6-gfp could overcome this problem. Here, the subcellular distribution and biotransformation mechanism of phenanthrene in pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) seedlings with inoculation of Ph6-gfp were further investigated both in vitro and in vivo. The possible biotransformation products of phenanthrene were identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) coupled with ¹³C₂-phenanthrene labeling. Results indicated that Ph6-gfp colonized pakchoi interior and reduced the content of phenanthrene in different cell compartments. Notably, the inoculation hindered the subcellular distribution of phenanthrene from intercellular space to subcellular fractions (i.e., cell wall, cell membrane, cell solution, and cell organelles), likely resulting from the interception and biodegradation of phenanthrene by the bacterium between the cell wall and intercellular space. Additionally, the conjugation reactions of phenanthrene-metabolites and endogenous plant compounds were enhanced as a result of the inoculation. We propose that endophytic degradation, plant metabolism, and conjugation reaction are the three possible biotransformation mechanisms that could account for the changes in phenanthrene inside the plant cell compartments. This is the first observation of endophytic bacteria (EB)-enhanced biotransformation and conjugation of phenanthrene in pakchoi at the subcellular level, which drive novel insights in regulating food-crop contamination with endophytes in PAH-contaminated matrices.

Trace metals accumulation in soil irrigated with polluted water and assessment of human health risk from vegetable consumption in Bangladesh

Trace metals accumulation in soil irrigated with polluted water and human health risk from vegetable consumption was assessed based on the data available in the literature on metals pollution of water, soil, sediment and vegetables from the cites of Bangladesh. The quantitative data on metal concentrations, their contamination levels and their pollution sources have not been systematically gathered and studied so far. The data on metal concentrations, sources, contamination levels, sample collection and analytical tools used were collected, compared and discussed. The USEPA-recommended method for health risk assessment was used to estimate human risk from vegetable consumption. Concentrations of metals in water were highly variable, and the mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and As in water were found to be higher than the FAO irrigation water quality standard. In most cases, mean concentrations of metals in soil were higher than the Bangladesh background value. Based on geoaccumulation index (I _geo) values, soils of Dhaka city are considered as highly contaminated. The I _geo shows Cd, As, Cu, Ni, Pb and Cr contamination of agricultural soils and sediments of the cities all over the Bangladesh. Polluted water irrigation and agrochemicals are identified as dominant sources of metals in agricultural soils. Vegetable contamination by metals poses both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to the public. Based on the results of the pollution and health risk assessments, Cd, As, Cr, Cu, Pb and Ni are identified as the priority control metals and the Dhaka city is recommended as the priority control city. This study provides quantitative evidence demonstrating the critical need for strengthened wastewater discharge regulations in order to protect residents from heavy metal discharges into the environment.

Association of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with humic acid and humin fractions in a peat soil and implications for their long-term retention

To elucidate the environmental fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) once released into soil, sixteen humic acids (HAs) and one humin (HM) fractions were sequentially extracted from a peat soil, and sixteen priority PAHs in these humic substances (HSs) were analyzed. It was found that the total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑16PAHs) increased evidently from HA1 to HA16, and then dramatically reached the highest value in HM. The trend of ∑16PAHs in HAs relates to surface carbon and C-H/C-C contents, the bulk aliphatic carbon content and aliphaticity, as well as the condensation enhancement of carbon domains, which were derived from elemental composition, XPS, ¹³C NMR, as well as thermal analyses. HM was identified to be the dominant sink of 16 PAHs retention in soil, due to its aliphatic carbon-rich chemical composition and the highly condensed physical makeup of its carbon domains. This study highlights the joint roles of the physical and chemical properties of HSs in retention of PAHs in soil and the associated mechanisms; the results are of significance for PAH-polluted soil risk assessment and remediation.

Uptake and translocation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals by maize from soil irrigated with wastewater

By investigating the uptake of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and five heavy metals from soils to maize at the farmlands with industrial wastewater irrigation, this study revealed the effects of heavy metals on PAHs uptake in terms of co-contamination. The results of 15 investigated soils showed medium contamination level and the vertical PAHs distribution in soils indicated that 2-3 rings PAHs with low octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow < 4.5) were easier to transport in soils, causing a great potential risk immigrating to the groundwater. The 3-ring PAHs were most likely to be taken up by maize roots whereas 2- and 4-6 ring PAHs had the lower likelihood. The translocation of PAHs in maize tissues has positive relationship with log Kow less than 4.5, while negatively correlated otherwise. Redundancy analysis indicated the unexpected results that, except for soil PAHs concentration, the PAHs translocation by maize was reduced by Pb uptake, but not significantly affected by soil organic matters, pH or the other four heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn). This study for the first time provides the restricted factors of PAHs and heavy metal acropetal translocation by maize when they co-exist at wastewater irrigation sites.

Antioxidant Response in Duckweed After Exposure to Secondary Effluent from Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, Elazığ, Turkey

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of the effluent of Elazig Municipality Wastewater Treatment Plant on the oxidative defense capacity of aquatic plants (Lemna minor L. and Lemna gibba L.). For this purpose, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG), vitamin A (retinol), vitamin E (α-tocopherol), and vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) levels were determined by the HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) in the control groups and the groups adapting to reactors fed with discharge water. The depletion of vitamins (A, E, and C), decrease of GSH/GSSG ratio, and increase of MDA that reflect a precarious state of the cell in L. minor L. and L. gibba L. were observed after exposure to wastewater. It can be suggested that the selected biomarkers are useful in understanding the biochemical mechanisms of the secondary effluents from wastewater treatment plant in L. minor L. and L. gibba L. as early warning indicators.

Inoculating wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with the endophytic bacterium Serratia sp. PW7 to reduce pyrene contamination

This research was conducted to find an optimal inoculation way for a pyrene-degrading endophytic Serratia sp. PW7 to colonize wheat for reducing pyrene contamination. Three inoculation ways, which are soaking seeds in inocula (TS), dipping roots of seedlings in inocula (TR), and spraying inocula on leaves of seedlings (TL), were used in this study. Inoculated seedlings and noninoculated seedlings (CK) were, respectively, cultivated in Hoagland solutions supplemented with pyrene in a growth chamber. The results showed that strain PW7 successfully colonized the inoculated seedlings in high numbers, and significantly promoted the growth of seedlings (TS and TR). More importantly, strain PW7 reduced pyrene levels in the seedlings and the Hoagland solutions. Compared to the noninoculated seedlings, the pyrene contents of the inoculated seedlings were decreased by 35.7-86.3% in the shoots and by 26.8-60.1% in the roots after 8-day cultivation. By comparing the efficiencies of decreasing pyrene residues, it can be concluded that TR was an optimal inoculation way for endophytic strains to colonize the inoculated plants and to reduce the pyrene contamination. Our findings provide an optimized inoculation way to reduce organic contamination in crops by inoculating plants with functional endophytic bacteria.

Spatial distribution and composition of aliphatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and hopanes in superficial sediments of the coral reefs of the Persian Gulf, Iran

This study is the first quantitative report on petroleum biomarkers from the coral reefs systems of the Persian Gulf. 120 reef surface sediment samples from ten fragile coral reef ecosystems were collected and analyzed for grain size, biogenic elements, elemental ratios, and petroleum biomarkers (n-alkanes, PAHs¹ and Hopanes) to assess the sources and early diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter. The mean grain size of the reef sediments ranged from 13.56 to 37.11% (Clay), 26.92 to 51.73% (Sand) and 35.97 to 43.85% (Silt). TOC² (3.35-9.72 mg.g^-1) and TON³ (0.4-1.10 mg.g^-1) were identified as influencing factors on the accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons, whilst BC⁴ (1.08-3.28 mg.g^-1) and TIN⁵ (0.13-0.86) did not exhibit any determining effect. Although BC and TIN demonstrated heterogeneous spatial distribution, TOC and TON indicated homogenous distribution with continually upward trend in concentration from the east to west ward of the Gulf. The mean calculated TOC/TN ratios vacillated according to the stations (p < 0.05) from 2.96 at Shidvar Island to 8.64 at Hengam Island. The high TOC/TN ratios were observed in the Hengam (8.64), Kharg (8.04) and Siri (6.29), respectively, suggesting a predominant marine origin. The mean concentrations of ∑C_11-35n-alkanes, ∑30 PAHs and ∑9Hopanes were found in the ranges of 385-937 μg.g^-1dw, (overall mean:590 μg.g^-1dw), 326-793 ng.g^-1dw (499 ng.g^-1dw), 88 to 568 ng.g^-1 d (258 ng.g^-1dw), respectively. Higher concentrations of detected petroleum biomarkers in reef sediments were chiefly distributed near main industrial areas, Kharg, Lavan and Siri, whilst the lower concentrations were in Hormoz and Qeshm. In addition, one-way ANOVA⁶ analysis demonstrated considerably significant differences (p < 0.05) among concentration of detected total petroleum hydrocarbons between most sampling locations. Some sampling sites especially Kharg, Lavan, Siri and Lark indicated higher concentration of n-alkanes due to the higher maintenance of organic matter by high clay content in the sediments. Furthermore, most sediment samples, except for Hormoz, Qeshm and Hengam showed an even carbon preference for n-alkanes which could be correlated to bacterial input. NPMDS⁷ analysis also demonstrated that among the congeners of petroleum biomarkers, n-C₁₂,n-C₁₄, n-C₁₆,n-C₁₈ and n-C₂₀ for n-alkanes, Phe⁸ and Naph⁹ along with their Alkyl homologues for PAHs (2-3 rings accounted for 60%) and C₃₀αβ and C₂₉αβ for Hopanes were discriminated from their other congeners in the whole study area. Our results based on the PCA¹⁰ analysis and diagnostic indices of AHs¹¹ and PAHs along with ring classification of PAHs, in addition, the ubiquitous presence of UCM,¹² and Hopanes revealed that the main sources of the pollution were petroleum and petroleum combustion mainly from offshore oil exploration and extraction, discharge of pollutants from shipping activities.

Distribution pattern and the risks of OPCs, PHAs and PCBs in aged refuses from landfill

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are the urgent risk for landfill, and should be considered before the landfill reclamation and resource. In this work, the distribution pattern of selected POPs in landfill and their ecological risks were investigated and assessed. The Σ20OCPs, Σ16PAHs and Σ19PCBs were around 157.4-329.2, 4103-19,190, and 79.1-340.3μgkg(-1) in aged refuses, with the mean value of 206.6, 8645.4, and 155.1μgkg(-1). While those in soil covers were only 6.3-75.4, 125.5-515.3 and 2.6-43.4μgkg(-1), with the mean value of 33.7, 257.7, and 24.0μgkg(-1), respectively. The maximum OPCs, PHAs and PCBs were in aged refuse with 13, 7, 10 disposal years. Whereas, the corresponding top content in soil covers were in 10, 13 and 16years, meaning that aged refuses were not the direct source for soil covers. Among 20 OCPs measured, α-HCH, δ-HCH, Dieldrin, and Endrin were presented in all aged refuses, with the mean concentration of 93.6, 52.1, 3.9 and 4.7μgkg(-1), respectively. For PAHs, PHE, FLU and PYR were the main composition, and reached to 1535, 1224, 1187μgkg(-1). The Σ7CarPAHs occupied around 33.3-49.9% of total Σ16PAHs tested, and could be used as the indictor for PAHs pollutant in landfill. PCB-5 content was around 40.7-263.3μgkg(-1) in aged refuses, and occupied around 51.5-81.8% of Σ19PCBs measured. The HCHs and DDTs in aged refuses were below the national standard GB15618-1995, and the corresponding Σ19PCBs concentrations met the standard of GB 13015-91, suggesting that aged refuse are accepted for the further utilization process.

Changes in water quality of treated sewage effluents by their receiving environments in Tablas de Daimiel National Park, Spain

The Tablas de Daimiel National Park (TDNP), a floodplain wetland located in the Upper Guadiana Basin (central Spain), receives pollution from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharging their treated sewage effluents (TSEs) to tributary channels to the wetland. The TSEs suffer transformations on their way to the TDNP, but the water quality is controlled only at the point of discharge. In this work, we analyse the change in water quality of the TSE from four urban WWTPs in the surroundings of the TDNP (Alcázar de San Juan, Daimiel, Manzanares and Villarrubia de los Ojos towns). The water samples were taken at the outlet of the plants and in the receiving environments, to analyse the water quality transformation of the TSE. The different discharge configurations of each WWTP have been related with the water quality transformation of their TSE, to interpret the influence of the hydro-geomorphology in the improvement or deterioration of the water quality of TSE. We found that the discharge of TSE into slow flow channels with macrophyte vegetation facilitates water self-purification but, with time, the accumulation of sludge in the beds of the effluents tends to be the cause of the deterioration of the water quality.

Occurrence and distribution of PAHs, PCBs, and chlorinated pesticides in Tunisian soil irrigated with treated wastewater

Treated wastewater (TWW) is a well recognized source of organic pollutants (OPs) that may accumulate during irrigation. For the first time, data on the occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyles (PCBs) and organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) in wastewater irrigated soil in Nabeul (Tunisia) are reported. 13 PAHs, 18 PCBs and 16 OCPs were analyzed in soil samples collected at 0-10 and 10-20 cm depth before each and every irrigation and after the irrigation period expanding from June to October. Soil was extracted with an accelerated solvent extractor and analyzed by a tandem gas chromatograph in selected reaction monitoring mode (GC/MS/MS/SRM). OPs residues were detected before irrigation and accumulated at the end of the season for some of them. The total concentration of PAHs varied between 120.01 and 365.18 μg kg(-1) dry weight (dw) at 0-10 cm depth before and at the end of irrigation, respectively. The total concentration of PCBs varied between 11.26 and 21.89 μg kg(-1) dw at 0-10 cm, being higher than those reported for 10-20 cm. The six indicator PCB congeners (28, 52, 101, 138, 153, 180) were predominant. OCPs concentrations ranged between 12.49 and 21.81 μg kg(-1) at 0-10 cm and between 74.03 and 310.54 μg kg(-1) at 10-20 cm depth. DDT was predominant accounting for more than 94% of the total OCPs. In view of the present results, OPs are relevant to the agricultural environment, calling for more research on their persistence and potential transfer to plants and/or groundwater while taking into account farmers' practices.

Bioavailability and mobility of organic contaminants in soil: new three-step ecotoxicological evaluation

A novel approach was developed for rapid assessment of bioavailability and potential mobility of contaminants in soil. The response of the same test organism to the organic extract, water extract and solid phase of soil was recorded and compared. This approach was designed to give an initial estimate of the total organic toxicity (response to organic extractable fraction), as well as the mobile (response to water extract) and bioavailable fraction (response to solid phase) of soil samples. Eighteen soil samples with different levels of pollution and content of organic carbon were selected to validate the novel three-step ecotoxicological evaluation approach. All samples were chemically analysed for priority contaminants, including aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). The ecotoxicological evaluation involved determination of toxicity of the organic, mobile and bioavailable fractions of soil to the test organism, bacterium Bacillus cereus. We found a good correlation between the chemical analysis and the toxicity of organic extract. The low toxicity of water extracts indicated low water solubility, and thus, low potential mobility of toxic contaminants present in the soil samples. The toxicity of the bioavailable fraction was significantly greater than the toxicity of water-soluble (mobile) fraction of the contaminants as deduced from comparing untreated samples and water extracts. The bioavailability of the contaminants decreased with increasing concentrations of organic carbon in evaluated soil samples. In conclusion, the three-step ecotoxicological evaluation utilised in this study can give a quick insight into soil contamination in context with bioavailability and mobility of the contaminants present. This information can be useful for hazard identification and risk assessment of soil-associated contaminants. Potatoes - A crop resistant against input of heavy metals from the metallicaly contaminated soil

The objective of our study was to assess the extent of accumulation of cadmium, lead and zinc in potato tubers depending on the concentration of these heavy metals in soil and to evaluate the resistance of 11 cultivars of potato cultivated in 5 localities of the Slovakia against input of these heavy metals into the consumption part of potato. Contents of Cd (Pb, Zn) in soil were 0.94-2.54 (18.03-24.90, 35.71-72.40) mg/kg in soil extract by aqua regia and 0.030-0.188 (0.149-0.356, 0.052-0.238) mg/kg in soil extract by NH4NO3. The contents of Cd, Pb, and Zn were determined in potatoes in extracts of freeze-dried samples and expressed in mg/kg of fresh matter (FM). Determined contents of heavy metals were in the range of ND-0.058 mg Cd/kg FM, 0.020-0.630 mg Pb/kg FM, 1.836-3.457 mg Zn/kg FM, resp. The statistically significant correlation between heavy metal content in soil and its content in potato tubers were confirmed only: cv. Laura - Spissky Stvrtok (Cd), cv. Red Anna - Odorin (Pb) and Marabel, Red Anna - Odorin, cv. Marabel - Belusa, cv. Volumia - Imel (Zn).

Spatial Patterns of Heavy Metal Contamination by Urbanization

Spatial analysis of heavy metals (HMs) is an important step toward developing predictive models of urban HM contamination. This study assessed the spatial distribution of the enrichment of eight HMs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the city of Ghent, Belgium. A database with soil HM concentrations measured at 2194 point observations was collected from the Public Waste Agency of Flanders. The degree of anthropogenic HM enrichment was quantified using an urban pollution index (PI). Enrichment of HMs showed high variations throughout the study area. Observed concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, and Hg did not exceed expected background values for the majority of the sampling locations (PI ≤ 1 for 76% [As], 64% [Cd], 50% [Cr], and 74% [Hg] of sampling points). Accordingly, predicted PI values of these HMs in Ghent were on average <2. On the other hand, observed median PIs for Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn surpassed expected background values (PI >1) in 66, 76, 68, and 66% of the cases. The predicted PI means for the entire study area were 3.46 (Cu), 2.06 (Ni), 3.26 (Pb), and 3.28 (Zn). Comparison between various land use types and times since development indicated that HM enrichment was generally highest in urban land uses built up before 1933. Results, however, suggested that spatial patterns of HM contamination are difficult to predict in cities with a long history of industrialization without knowledge on the spatial distribution of (potentially) contaminating historical industrial activities.

Genotoxicity Evaluation of Irrigative Wastewater from Shijiazhuang City in China

In the present study, the wastewater sample collected from the Dongming discharging river in Shijiazhuang city was analysed using both chemical analysis and biological assays including the Salmonella mutagenicity test, micronucleus test and single-cell gel electrophoresis. Chemical analysis of the sample was performed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The Salmonella mutagenicity test was performed on Salmonella typhimurium TA97, TA98, TA100 and TA102 strains with and without S9 mixture. The mice received the wastewater in natura through drinking water at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 100%. One group of mice was exposed for 2 consecutive days, and the other group of mice was exposed for 15 consecutive days. To establish the levels of primary DNA damage, single-cell gel electrophoresis was performed on treated mouse liver cell. The concentrations of chromium and lead in the sample exceeded the national standard (GB20922-2007) by 0.78 and 0.43-fold, respectively. More than 30 organic compounds were detected, and some of the detected compounds were mutagens, carcinogens and environmental endocrine disrupters. A positive response for Salmonella typhimurium TA98 strain was observed. Mouse exposure via drinking water containing 50% and 100% of wastewater for 15 consecutive days caused a significant increase of MN frequencies in a dose-response manner. Mouse exposure via drinking water containing 50% and 100% of wastewater for 15 consecutive days caused a significant increase of the Olive tail moments in a dose-response manner. All the results indicated that the sample from the Dongming discharging river in Shijiazhuang city exhibited genotoxicity and might pose harmful effects on the local residents.

Dependence among total polyphenols content, total antioxidant capacity and heavy metals content in potatoes

Polyphenols belong to the most significant compounds with antioxidant effects in potatoes. Their content depends on several factors. The most important factor is the variety of potatoes and the conditions of their growing such as temperature, rainfall, altitude, agronomic and chemical characteristics of the soil. We have compared two potato cultivars in the study which have been grown in the Slovak localities Dolné Obdokovce and Vrbová nad Váhom (cv. Agria) and Nitra, Radošina and Vrbová nad Váhom (cv. Impala). In lyophilized samples of potatoes total polyphenols content in ethanolic extracts using Folin-Ciocalteu agens and in methanolic extracts total antioxidant capacity using DPPH were spectrophotometrically determined. The average total polyphenols content in the potato variety Impala was 604.26 ±120.70 mg.kg-1 dry matter (DM) and 529.37 ±59.35 mg.kg-1 DM in the variety Agria. The average value of total antioxidant capacity, expressed in % inhibition, was 8.44 ±1.68% in the potato variety Impala and 8.09 ±1.14% in Agria. The results obtained were evaluated by One-way analysis of variance ANOVA (LSD-test), using Statistical Analysis Software Statgraphics. Mutual correlations among the total polyphenols content, total antioxidant capacity and heavy metals concent (Pb, Ni, Cd - determined using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) method: Cd, Pb: GF-AAS and Ni F-AAS) were evaluated using the correlation and regression analysis (Microsoft Excel). Statistically significant interdependence (p <0.05) was only confirmed between the Cd content and total antioxidant capacity in both cultivars, or between the Ni content and total antioxidant capacity in the variety Impala.

Impacts of produced water origin on bacterial community structures of activated sludge

The purpose of this study was to reveal how activated sludge communities respond to influent quality and indigenous communities by treating two produced waters from different origins in a batch reactor in succession. The community shift and compositions were investigated using Polymerase Chain Reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and further 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clone library analysis. The abundance of targeted genes for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation, nahAc/phnAc and C12O/C23O, was tracked to define the metabolic ability of the in situ microbial community by Most Probable Number (MPN) PCR. The biosystem performed almost the same for treatment of both produced waters in terms of removals of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and PAHs. Sludge communities were closely associated with the respective influent bacterial communities (similarity>60%), while one sludge clone library was dominated by the Betaproteobacteria (38%) and Bacteriodetes (30%) and the other was dominated by Gammaproteobacteria (52%). This suggested that different influent and water quality have an effect on sludge community compositions. In addition, the existence of catabolic genes in sludge was consistent with the potential for degradation of PAHs in the treatment of both produced waters.

Contamination of Phthalate Esters (PAEs) in Typical Wastewater-Irrigated Agricultural Soils in Hebei, North China

The Wangyang River (WYR) basin is a typical wastewater irrigation area in Hebei Province, North China. This study investigated the concentration and distribution of six priority phthalate esters (PAEs) in the agricultural soils in this area. Thirty-nine soil samples (0-20 cm) were collected along the WYR to assess the PAE residues in soils. Results showed that PAEs are ubiquitous environmental contaminants in the topsoil obtained from the irrigation area. The concentrations of Σ6PAEs range from 0.191 μg g-1 dw to 0.457 μg g-1 dw with an average value of 0.294 μg g-1 dw. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) are the dominant PAE species in the agricultural soils. Among the DEHP concentrations, the highest DEHP concentration was found at the sites close to the villages; this result suggested that dense anthropogenic activities and random garbage disposal in the rural area are possible sources of PAEs. The PAE concentrations were weakly and positively correlated with soil organic carbon and soil enzyme activities; thus, these factors can affect the distribution of PAEs. This study further showed that only dimethyl phthalate (DMP) concentrations exceeded the recommended allowable concentrations; no remediation measures are necessary to control the PAEs in the WYR area. However, the PAEs in the topsoil may pose a potential risk to the ecosystem and human health in this area. Therefore, the exacerbating PAE pollution should be addressed.

Identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils in Taizhou, East China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their hazards in surface soil (n = 92) were investigated in Taizhou, China, which is an area in East China famous for production and exporting of rice. Total concentrations of PAHs in soils ranged from 2.3 × 10(1) to 7.6 × 10(2) with a mean of 1.8 × 10(2) μg/kg (dry mass; dm). Concentrations of 16 PAHs reported here were less than those observed in most previous studies in China and other countries. Concentrations of individual PAH in fluvo-aquic soils were greater than those in paddy soils except naphthalene. Fluoranthene and pyrene were dominant PAHs, which accounted for 19.7 and 13.3 % of the total mass of PAHs, respectively. Based on ratios of low molecular weight PAHs to high molecular weight PAHs, diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis, the predominant source of PAHs was combustion and pyrolysis, especially coal, natural gas, gasoline and diesel emissions from traffic, as well as burning of straw. Carcinogenic potencies of 13 samples were 1.1- to 2.9-fold greater than the target values promulgated by the Netherlands, indicating increased carcinogenic risks of soils from these sites. However, risks of cancer via accidental ingestion, dermal absorption and inhalation to humans posed by PAHs in soil were relatively small.

Presence of PAHs in milk of industrial farms from Tizayuca, Hidalgo, Mexico

The objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cow's milk from industrial farms that are located near an industrial park in Hidalgo, Mexico. It was found that the concentrations of PAHs in the raw milk of cattle from industrial farms have increased in recent years. Composite samples were collected between 2008 and 2010 and analysis carried out according to 8100 EPA procedures and analyzed by gas chromatography with FID detection. The results show that combustion PAHs were mostly Ace, Acy, and Fla (0.25, 0.32, and 0.22 µg g(-1), respectively). Diagnostic ratios were used to show that the probable sources were grass and fuel combustion. The sum of concentrations of 16 individual PAHs did not breach permissible levels in milk (25 µg g(-1) according to the United States EPA), indicating a limited health risk to animals and humans in the study area. The industrial park has adequate pollutant emission regulations.

Characteristics of hydrocarbon hydroxylase genes in a thermophilic aerobic biological system treating oily produced wastewater

Alkane and aromatic hydroxylase genes in a full-scale aerobic system treating oily produced wastewater under thermophilic condition (45-50 °C) in the Jidong oilfield, China, were investigated using clone library and quantitative polymerase chain reaction methods. Rather than the normally encountered integral-membrane non-haem iron monooxygenase (alkB) genes, only CYP153-type P450 hydroxylase genes were detected for the alkane activation, indicating that the terminal oxidation of alkanes might be mainly mediated by the CYP153-type alkane hydroxylases in the thermophilic aerobic process. Most of the obtained CYP153 gene clones showed distant homology with the reference sequences, which might represent novel alkane hydroxylases. For the aromatic activation, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase (PAH-RHD) gene was derived from Gram-negative PAH-degraders belonging to the Burkholderiales order, with a 0.72% relative abundance of PAH-RHD gene to 16S rRNA gene. This was consistent with the result of 16S rRNA gene analysis, indicating that Burkholderiales bacteria might play a key role in the full-scale process of thermophilic hydrocarbon degradation.

The source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the topsoil in Xiaodian sewage irrigation area, North of China

31 topsoil samples were collected by grid method in Xiaodian sewage irrigation area, Taiyuan City, North of China. The concentrations of 16 kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined by gas chromatograph coupled with mass spectrum. Generally speaking, the distribution order of PAHs in the area is: those with five and six rings > those with four rings > those with two and three rings. Source apportionment shows a significant zonation of the source of PAHs: the civil coal pollution occurred in the north part, the local and far factory pollution happened in the middle area and the mixed pollution sources from coal and wood combustion, automotive emission, presented in the south area. The distribution of PAHs has a definite relationship with the sewage water flow and soil adsorption. The related coefficient between PAHs and physicochemical property showed there was a negative correlation between pH, silt, clay and PAHs while there was a positive correlation between total organic carbon, sand and PAHs.
