Global fate of POPs: current and future research directions

Organophosphate esters in terrestrial environments of Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica: Occurrence, potential sources, and bioaccumulation

Despite growing concerns regarding the long-range transport (LRT) and ecological risks of organophosphate esters (OPEs), information on the environmental behaviors of OPEs in polar terrestrial ecosystems remains inadequate. In the present study, 10 OPEs were analyzed in soil and vegetation samples collected from Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. The OPE concentrations in Antarctic soils, mosses, and lichens ranged from 0.87 to 15.7 ng/g dry weight (dw), 9.8 to 113 ng/g dw, and 3.6 to 75.2 ng/g dw, respectively. Non-chlorinated OPEs predominated in terrestrial matrices, accounting for approximately 76 % of the OPE composition. Source identification indicated that OPE contamination in Antarctica likely resulted from local anthropogenic sources and LRT. Moreover, the bioaccumulation behavior of OPEs from soil to vegetation was assessed using bioconcentration factors (BCFs), revealing a significant non-linear trend of initial increase and subsequent decrease in BCFs relative to the lipophilicities of the octanol-air partition coefficient (log KOA) and octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). While low levels of OPEs in Antarctic terrestrial environments were reported in this study, their sustained inputs and potential ecological risks in polar regions warrant further attention.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), Current Use Pesticides (CUPs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in edible marine invertebrates from a Patagonian harbor

Despite their global ban in 2001, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) remain detectable in marine species, posing ongoing environmental and health risks. Current use pesticides (CUPs) like chlorpyrifos and chlorothalonil, along with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), also contaminate coastal areas, affecting human health. Occurrence and fate of current-use pesticides in Chinese forest soils

Pesticides play a crucial role in securing global food production to meet increasing demands. However, because of their pervasive use, they are now ubiquitous environmental pollutants that have adverse effects on both ecosystems and human health. In this study, the environmental occurrence and fate of 16 current-use pesticides (CUPs) were investigated in 93 forest soil samples obtained from 11 distinct mountains in China. The concentrations of the target pesticides ranged from 0.36 to 55 ng/g dry weight. Cypermethrin, dicofol, chlorpyrifos, chlorothalonil, and trifluralin were the most frequently detected CUPs. The CUP concentrations were generally higher in the O-horizon than in the A-horizon. Chlorpyrifos, chlorothalonil, and dicofol were detected in most deep layers in soil profiles from three mountains selected to represent distinct climate zones. No clear altitudinal trend in organic carbon-normalized concentrations of CUPs was observed in the O- or A-horizons within individual mountains. A negative correlation was noted between the CUP concentrations and the altitudes across all sampling sites. This indicated that proximity to emission sources was a key factor affecting the spatial distribution of CUPs in mountain forest soil on a national scale. The ecological risk assessment showed that dicofol and cypermethrin pose potential risks to earthworms. This study emphasizes the importance of source control when setting management strategies for CUPs.

Airborne organic pollutants impact microbial communities in temperate and Antarctic seawaters

Airborne Organic Pollutants (AOPs) reach remote oceanic regions after long range atmospheric transport and deposition, incorporating into natural microbial communities. This study investigated the effects of AOPs on natural microbial communities of the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Bellingshausen Sea, by assessing the impact of both non-polar and polar AOPs on cell abundances, chlorophyll a concentrations and cell viabilities of different microbial groups. Our results indicate that almost all groups, except flagellates in the Bellingshausen Sea, were significantly affected by AOPs. While no significant differences in chlorophyll a concentrations were observed between non-polar and polar AOPs, significant variations in cell abundances were noted. Cell death occurred at AOP concentrations as low as five times the oceanic field levels, likely due to their high chemical activity. Cyanobacteria in temperate waters exhibited the highest sensitivity to AOPs, whereas medium and larger diatoms in the Bellingshausen Sea were more affected than smaller diatoms or flagellates, contrary to the expected size-related sensitivity trend. Additionally, microorganisms in temperate waters were more sensitive to the polar fraction of AOPs compared to the non-polar fraction, which showed an inverse sensitivity pattern. This differential sensitivity is attributed to variations in the ratio of polar to non-polar AOPs in the respective environments. Our findings underscore the varying impacts of AOPs on marine microbial communities across different oceanic regions.

Persistent organic pollutants and chlorpyrifos in tissues of a histotrophic viviparous species, the Southern Eagle Ray Myliobatis goodei

Elasmobranchs are good indicators of marine pollution as they accumulate pollutants from water and food, and occupy different trophic levels. Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorpyrifos were quantified in muscle, liver, gonads, gills, and brain in both sexes and maturity stages of the Southern Eagle Ray, Myliobatis goodei, captured in Argentine coastal waters. Moreover, possible histological alterations in the liver and gonads were analyzed. Pollutant concentrations were pervasive across all tissues, with PCBs > OCPs > chlorpyrifos. Elevated pollutant levels were notably found in the liver and gills. We identified thirty-six PCB congeners in tissues, with low-chlorine congeners prevailing. Among OCPs, ∑DDT and ∑endosulfan were predominant. Females exhibited higher pollutant levels in most tissues compared to males, except in the gonads, and adults generally displayed elevated pollutant levels. Histological analysis revealed the presence of atretic follicles and melanomacrophages (MM). Continuous monitoring of pollutant levels, alongside their effects on physiological and ecological traits, is imperative for effective management and conservation efforts.

Hexabromocyclododecanes in soils, plants, and sediments from Svalbard, Arctic: Levels, isomer profiles, chiral signatures, and potential sources

This study investigated the occurrence, stereoisomeric behavior, and potential sources of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) in topsoil and terrestrial vegetation from Svalbard and ocean sediment samples from Kongsfjorden, an open fjord on the west coast of Spitsbergen. The mean levels of total concentrations (Σ3HBCDs) were comparable to those in other remote regions and were lower than those in source regions. Elevated proportions of α-HBCD with an average of 41% in the terrestrial samples and 25% in ocean sediments compared to those in commercial products (10-13% for α-HBCD) were observed, implying isomerization from γ- to α-HBCD in the Arctic environment. In addition, the extensive deviations of enantiomeric fractions (EFs) from the racemic values reflected the effect of biotransformation on HBCD accumulation. Linear correlation analysis, redundancy analysis, and back-trajectory were combined to infer possible HBCD sources, and the results showed the important role of global production and long-range environmental transport (LRET) for the entry of HBCDs into the Arctic at an early stage. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first report on the diastereoisomer- and enantiomer-specific profiles of HBCDs in the Arctic terrestrial environment and sheds light on the transport pathways and environmental fate for more effective risk management related to HBCDs in remote regions.

Exposure of an endangered seabird species to persistent organic pollutants: Assessing levels in blood and link with reproductive parameters

Ocean contamination, particularly from persistent organic pollutants (POPs), remains a significant threat to marine predators that occupy high trophic positions. Long-lived procellariform seabirds are apex predators in marine ecosystems and tend to accumulate contaminants. Prolonged exposure to pollutants negatively affects their fitness including reproductive success. Low breeding success may represent a hurdle for the restoration of small and endangered seabird populations, including several highly threatened gadfly petrels. Here we investigated the annual variation (2019 and 2022) in organochlorine pesticide (OCP), polychlorinated biphenyl ether (PCB), polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure in the endangered Bermuda petrel (Pterodroma cahow), and the relationship between female contaminant burden and breeding parameters. We found that petrels were exposed to a wide range of pollutants (33 out of 55 showed measurable levels) with PCBs dominating the blood contaminant profiles in both years. Only 9 compounds were detected in >50 % of the birds. Specifically, among OCPs, p, p'-DDE and hexaclorobenzene were the most frequently detected while fluorene and acenaphthene were the most common PAH. The concentrations of ∑5PCBs and ∑7POPs were higher in older birds. Furthermore, females with greater contaminant burdens laid eggs with a lower probability of hatching. However, female investment in egg production (size and volume) was unrelated to their blood contaminant load. Overall, this study highlights the presence of a wide range of contaminants in the petrel's food web, and it sheds light on the potential impact of chronic exposure to sub-lethal levels of PCBs on the breeding success of seabirds. We claim that toxicological testing should be a practice integrated in the management of seabirds, particularly of endangered species to monitor how past and present anthropogenic activities impact their conservation status.

Modulating responses of indicator genes in cellular homeostasis, immune defense and apoptotic process in the Macrophthalmus japonicus exposed to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate as a plastic additive

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), have been increasingly used as plasticizers to manufacture soft and flexible materials and ubiquitously found in water and sediments in the aquatic ecosystem. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of DEHP exposure on cellular homeostasis (HSF1 and seven HSPs), immune responses (ILF), and apoptotic responses (p53, BAX, Bcl-2). DEHP exposure upregulated the expression of HSF1 and ILF. Moreover, it altered the expression levels of HSPs (upregulation of HSP70, HSP90, HSP40, HSP83, and HSP67B2 and downregulation of HSP60 and HSP21) in conjunction with HSF1 and ILF in the gills and hepatopancreas of M. japonicus exposed to DEHP. At the protein level, DEHP exposure changed apoptotic signals in both tissues of M. japonicus. These findings indicate that chronic exposures to several DEHP concentrations could disturb cellular balance, damage the inflammatory and immune systems, and induce apoptotic cell death, thereby affecting the survival of M. japonicus.

Enhanced bioremediation of cyclohexaneacetic acid in offshore sediments with green synthetic iron oxide and Pseudoalteromonas sp

Naphthenic acids (NAs) have been found to exert serious threats on offshore sediment ecosystems and human health in recent years, which entails us the urgent need for NAs remediation. Bioremediation is considered an ideal method for sediment remediation due to ecological sustainability and economic feasibility. However, current bioremediation efficiency of offshore sediments suffers from relatively slow and there has never any attempts to bioremediate offshore sediment NAs contamination hitherto. In this study, the green synthetic iron oxides (gFeOx) based on Laminaria extracts was employed to enhance the biodegradation of NAs (Cyclohexylacetic acid, CHAA) in offshore sediments by Pseudoalteromonas sp. JSTW (an indigenous microorganism). The results showed that CHAA (20 mg·kg-1) in offshore sediments was removed almost 100% within 7 days at 30 mg·kg-1 gFeOx and 0.6 mg·kg-1 Strain JSTW. High-throughput sequencing results revealed that the structure and function of sediment microbial community were essentially restored to uncontaminated levels after bioremediation, highlighting the joint remediation approach is an efficient and eco-friendly method. Overall, this work has firstly provided insights into the application for NAs in situ bioremediation in offshore sediments.

Cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (D4, D5, and D6) as the emerging pollutants in environment: environmental distribution, fate, and toxicological assessments

Cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS) have now become a subject of environmental contamination and risk assessment due to their widespread use and occurrence in different environmental matrices. Due to their exceptional physio-chemical properties, these compounds are diversely used for formulations of consumer products and others implying their continuous and significant release to environmental compartments. This has captured the major attention of the concerned communities on the grounds of potential health hazards to human and biota. The present study aims at comprehensively reviewing its occurrence in air, water, soil, sediments, sludge, dusts, biogas, biosolids, and biota and their environmental behavior as well. Concentrations of cVMS in indoor air and biosolids were higher; however, no significant concentrations were observed in water, soil, and sediments except for wastewaters. No threat to the aquatic organisms has been identified as their concentrations do not exceed the NOEC (maximum no observed effect concentration) thresholds. Mammalian (rodents) toxicity hazards were not very evident except for the occurrence of uterine tumors in very rare cases under long-term chronic and repeated dose exposures in laboratory conditions. Human relevancy to rodents were also not strongly enough established. Therefore, more careful examinations are required to develop stringent weight of evidences in scientific domain and ease the policy making with respect to their production and use so as to combat any environmental consequences.

Contaminant dynamics in honey bees and hive products of apiaries from environmentally contrasting Argentinean regions

Argentina is a leading honey producer and honey bees are also critical for pollination services and wild plants. At the same time, it is a major crop producer with significant use of insecticides, posing risks to bees. Therefore, the presence of the highly toxic insecticide chlorpyrifos, and forbidden contaminants (organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) was investigated in honey bee, beebread, wax and honey samples in apiaries from three contrasting regions of Argentina. Chlorpyrifos was detected in all samples with higher levels during period 1 (spring) in contrast to period 2 (fall), agreeing with its season-wise use in different crops, reaching 3.05 ng/g in honey bees. A subsequent first-tier pesticide hazard analysis revealed that it was relevant to honey bee health, mainly due to the high concentrations found in wax samples from two sites, reaching 132.4 ng/g. In addition, wax was found to be the most contaminated matrix with a prevalence of OCPs (∑OCPs 58.23-172.99 ng/g). Beebread samples showed the highest concentrations and diversity of pesticide residues during period 1 (higher temperatures). A predominance of the endosulfan group was registered in most samples, consistent with its intensive past use, especially in Central Patagonia before its prohibition. Among the industrial compounds, lighter PCB congeners dominated, suggesting the importance of atmospheric transport. The spatio-temporal distribution of pesticides shows a congruence with the environmental characteristics of the areas where the fields are located (i.e., land use, type of productive activities and climatic conditions). Sustained monitoring of different pollutants in beekeeping matrices is recommended to characterize chemical risks, assess the health status of honey bee hives and the pollution levels of different agroecosystems. This knowledge will set a precedent for South America and be helpful for actions focused on the conservation of pollination services, apiculture and ecosystems in Argentina.

The bioremediation of the typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by microalgae-bacteria consortia: A systematic review

With industrialisation and the rapidly growing agricultural demand, many organic compounds have been leaked into the environment, causing serious damage to the biosphere. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a type of toxic chemicals that are resistant to degradation through normal chemical, biological or photolytic approaches. With their stable chemical structures, POPs can be accumulated in the environment, and transported through wind and water, causing global environmental issues. Many researches have been conducted to remediate POPs contamination using various kinds of biological methods, and significant results have been seen. Microalgae-bacteria consortium is a newly developed concept for biological technology in contamination treatment, with the synergetic effects between microalgae and bacteria, their potential for pollutants degradation can be further released. In this review, two types of POPs (polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are selected as the targeted pollutants to give a systematic analysis of the biodegradation through microalgae and bacteria, including the species selection, the identification of dominant enzymes, as well as the real application performance of the consortia. In the end, some outlooks and suggestions are given to further guide the development of applying microalgae-bacteria consortia in remediating POPs contamination. In general, the coculturing of microalgae and bacteria is a novel and efficient way to fulfil the advanced treatment of POPs in soil or liquid phase, and both monooxygenase and dioxygenase belonging to oxygenase play a vital role in the biodegradation of PCBs and PAHs. This review provides a general guide in the future investigation of biological treatment of POPs.

Trends in low temperature and non-thermal technologies for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants

The daunting effects of persistent organic pollutants on humans, animals, and the environment cannot be overemphasized. Their fate, persistence, long-range transport, and bioavailability have made them an environmental stressor of concern which has attracted the interest of the research community. Concerted efforts have been made by relevant organizations utilizing legislative laws to ban their production and get rid of them completely for the sake of public health. However, they have remained refractive in different compartments of the environment. Their bioavailability is majorly a function of different anthropogenic activities. Landfilling and incineration are among the earliest classical means of environmental remediation of waste; however, they are not sustainable due to the seepage of contaminants in landfills, the release of toxic gases into the atmosphere and energy requirements during incineration. Other advanced waste destruction technologies have been explored for the degradation of these recalcitrant pollutants; although, some are efficient, but are limited by high amounts of energy consumption, the use of organic solvents and hazardous chemicals, high capital and operational cost, and lack of public trust. Thus, this study has systematically reviewed different contaminant degradation technologies, their efficiency, and feasibility. Finally, based on techno-economic feasibility, non-invasiveness, efficiency, and environmental friendliness; radiation technology can be considered a viable alternative for the environmental remediation of contaminants in all environmental matrices at bench-, pilot-, and industrial-scale.

The Role of Endocrine Disruption Chemical-Regulated Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activity in the Pathogenesis of Pancreatic Diseases and Cancer

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) serves as a ligand-activated transcription factor crucial for regulating fundamental cellular and molecular processes, such as xenobiotic metabolism, immune responses, and cancer development. Notably, a spectrum of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) act as agonists or antagonists of AHR, leading to the dysregulation of pivotal cellular and molecular processes and endocrine system disruption. Accumulating evidence suggests a correlation between EDC exposure and the onset of diverse pancreatic diseases, including diabetes, pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer. Despite this association, the mechanistic role of AHR as a linchpin molecule in EDC exposure-related pathogenesis of pancreatic diseases and cancer remains unexplored. This review comprehensively examines the involvement of AHR in EDC exposure-mediated regulation of pancreatic pathogenesis, emphasizing AHR as a potential therapeutic target for the pathogenesis of pancreatic diseases and cancer.

Dissolved organic matter promoted hydroxyl radical formation and phenanthrene attenuation during oxygenation of iron-pillared montmorillonites

The oxygenation of Fe(II)-bearing minerals for hydroxyl radicals (HO•) formation and contaminant attenuation receives increasing attentions. However, information on dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different types, concentrations, and molecular weights (MWs) in manipulating HO• formation and contaminant attenuation during mineral oxygenation remain unclear. In this study, four iron-pillared montmorillonites (IPMs) and two DOM samples [e.g., humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)] were prepared to explore the HO• formation and phenanthrene attenuation during the oxygenation of IPMs in the presence or absence of DOMs. Results showed that iron-pillared and high-temperature calcination procedures extended the interlayer domain of IPMs, which provided favorable conditions for a high HO• production from 1293 to 14537 μmol kg-1. The surface-absorbed/low crystalline Fe(Ⅱ) was the predominant Fe(Ⅱ) fractionations for HO• production, and presence of DOMs significantly enhanced the HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation. Moreover, regardless of the types and concentrations, the low MW (LMW, <1 kDa) fraction within DOM pool contributed highest to HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation, followed by the bulk and high MW (HMW-, 1 kDa∼0.45 μm) fractions, and FA exhibited more efficient effects in promoting HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation than HA. The fluorescent spectral analysis further revealed that phenolic-like fluorophores in LMW-fraction were the main substances responsible for the enhanced HO• production and phenanthrene attenuation. The results deepen our understandings toward the behaviors and fate of aquatic HO• and contaminants, and also provide technical guidance for the remediation of contaminated environments.

Persistent organic pollutants in global surface soils: Distributions and fractionations

The distribution and fractionation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in different matrices refer to how these pollutants are dispersed and separated within various environmental compartments. This is a significant study area as it helps us understand the transport efficiencies and long-range transport potentials of POPs to enter remote areas, particularly polar regions. This study provides a comprehensive review of the progress in understanding the distribution and fractionation of POPs. We focus on the contributions of four intermedia processes (dry and wet depositions for gaseous and particulate POPs) and determine their transfer between air and soil. These processes are controlled by their partitioning between gaseous and particulate phases in the atmosphere. The distribution patterns and fractionations can be categorized into primary and secondary types. Equations are developed to quantificationally study the primary and secondary distributions and fractionations of POPs. The analysis results suggest that the transfer of low molecular weight (LMW) POPs from air to soil is mainly through gas diffusion and particle deposition, whereas high molecular weight (HMW) POPs are mainly via particle deposition. HMW-POPs tend to be trapped near the source, whereas LMW-POPs are more prone to undergo long-range atmospheric transport. This crucial distinction elucidates the primary reason behind their temperature-independent primary fractionation. However, the secondary distribution and fractionation can only be observed along a temperature gradient, such as latitudinal or altitudinal transects. An animation is produced by a one-dimensional transport model to simulate conceptively the transport of CB-28 and CB-180, revealing the similarities and differences between the primary and secondary distributions and fractionations. We suggest that the decreasing temperature trend along latitudes is not the major reason for POPs to be fractionated into the polar ecosystems, but drives the longer-term accumulation of POPs in cold climates or polar cold trapping.

Differential gene expression and developmental pathologies associated with persistent organic pollutants in sentinel fish in Troutman Lake, Sivuqaq, Alaska

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are lipophilic compounds that bioaccumulate in animals and biomagnify within food webs. Many POPs are endocrine disrupting compounds that impact vertebrate development. POPs accumulate in the Arctic via global distillation and thereby impact high trophic level vertebrates as well as people who live a subsistence lifestyle. The Arctic also contains thousands of point sources of pollution, such as formerly used defense (FUD) sites. Sivuqaq (St. Lawrence Island), Alaska was used by the U.S. military during the Cold War and FUD sites on the island remain point sources of POP contamination. We examined the effects of POP exposure on ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) collected from Troutman Lake in the village of Gambell as a model for human exposure and disease. During the Cold War, Troutman Lake was used as a dump site by the U.S. military. We found that PCB concentrations in stickleback exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's guideline for unlimited consumption despite these fish being low trophic level organisms. We examined effects at three levels of biological organization: gene expression, endocrinology, and histomorphology. We found that ninespine stickleback from Troutman Lake exhibited suppressed gonadal development compared to threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) studied elsewhere. Troutman Lake stickleback also displayed two distinct hepatic phenotypes, one with lipid accumulation and one with glycogen-type vacuolation. We compared the transcriptomic profiles of these liver phenotypes using RNA sequencing and found significant upregulation of genes involved in ribosomal and metabolic pathways in the lipid accumulation group. Additionally, stickleback displaying liver lipid accumulation had significantly fewer thyroid follicles than the vacuolated phenotype. Our study and previous work highlight health concerns for people and wildlife due to pollution hotspots in the Arctic, and the need for health-protective remediation.

Occurrence of chlorpyrifos and organochlorine pesticides in a native bumblebee (Bombus pauloensis) living under different land uses in the southeastern Pampas, Argentina

Pollinators such as Apidae bees are vital for ecosystems and food security. Unfortunately, their populations have declined due to several factors including pesticide use. Among them, the organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos, poses a global threat, while legacy compounds like organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) easily bioaccumulate, increasing the concern. Bombus pauloensis, a widely distributed native bee in Argentina, is used for commercial pollination; however, information regarding their health status is scarce. This study assessed chlorpyrifos and OCP levels in B. pauloensis (workers and males) and related environmental matrices living from three different land uses schemes, by means of GC-ECD and GC-MS. The ornamental horticulture field (OP) showed the highest total pesticide concentrations in workers (13.1 ng/g), flowers and soils, whereas the organic agriculture field (OA) exhibited the lowest. Chlorpyrifos was the most abundant compound, accounting for at least 20 % of pesticide load across all matrices. The food production horticulture field (FH) had the highest chlorpyrifos concentration in workers, males and soils (5.0, 4.4 and 3.3 ng/g, respectively), suggesting a local greater usage, whereas OA showed the lowest. Regarding OCPs groups, Drins and DDTs were predominant in most matrices, with FH males registering the highest levels (4.0 and 2.5 ng/g, respectively), closely followed by OP. However, metabolites' contribution indicated historical use and atmospheric inputs in all sites. Multivariate analyses confirmed the significance of site and bumblebee sex to explain pesticide composition. Males from all sites exhibited higher chlorpyrifos levels than workers and this trend was similar for some OCP groups. Overall, OA differed from FH and OP, indicating a correlation between production modes and pesticide profiles. This study demonstrates the value of B. pauloensis as a pesticide biomonitor but also offers insights into its populations' health in the area. In this sense, this information could be useful towards the preservation of this crucial pollinator.

Occurrence and Trophic Transfer of Polychlorinated Naphthalenes (PCNs) in the Arctic and Antarctic Benthic Marine Food Webs

Information about the occurrence and trophic transfer of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in polar ecosystems is vital but scarce. In this study, PCNs were analyzed in benthic marine sediment and several biological species, collected around the Chinese polar scientific research stations in Svalbard in the Arctic and South Shetland Island in Antarctica. Total PCNs in biota ranged from 28 to 249 pg/g of lipid weight (lw) and from 11 to 284 pg/g lw in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, respectively. The concentrations and toxic equivalent (TEQ) of PCNs in polar marine matrices remained relatively low, and the compositions were dominated by lower chlorinated homologues (mono- to trichlorinated naphthalenes). Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were calculated for congeners, homologues, and total PCNs in the polar benthic marine food webs. Opposite PCN transfer patterns were observed in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, i.e., trophic dilution and trophic magnification, respectively. This is the first comprehensive study of PCN trophic transfer behaviors in remote Arctic and Antarctic marine regions, providing support for further investigations of the biological trophodynamics and ecological risks of PCNs.

Responses of multifunctional immune complement component 1q (C1q) and apoptosis-related genes in Macrophthalmus japonicus tissues and human cells following exposure to environmental pollutants

Apoptosis is a key defense process for multiple immune system functions, playing a central role in maintaining homeostasis and cell development. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of environmental pollutant exposure on immune-related apoptotic pathways in crab tissues and human cells. To do this, we characterized the multifunctional immune complement component 1q (C1q) gene and analyzed C1q expression in Macrophthalmus japonicus crabs after exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) or hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs). Moreover, the responses of apoptotic signal-related genes were observed in M. japonicus tissues and human cell lines (HEK293T and HCT116). C1q gene expression was downregulated in the gills and hepatopancreas of M. japonicus after exposure to DEHP or HBCD. Pollutant exposure also increased antioxidant enzyme activities and altered transcription of 15 apoptotic signaling genes in M. japonicus. However, patterns in apoptotic signaling in response to these pollutants differed in human cells. HBCD exposure generated an apoptotic signal (cleaved caspase-3) and inhibited cell growth in both cell lines, whereas DEHP exposure did not produce such a response. These results suggest that exposure to environmental pollutants induced different levels of immune-related apoptosis depending on the cell or tissue type and that this induction of apoptotic signaling may trigger an initiation of carcinogenesis in M. japonicus and in humans as consumers.

Persistent organic pollutants exposure and risk of autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Accumulating number of epidemiological studies has recently proposed that improvement in the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is associated with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure. However, evidence from current researches is limited and inconsistent. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the potential associations comprehensively. We systematically and extensively searched two electronic databases (PubMed and EMBASE) from inception to July 3, 2022 and an updated search was performed before submission. Summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from stratified random-effects meta-analyses by type of exposure and outcome. We also tested the potential heterogeneity across studies, conducted sensitivity analysis and evaluated publication bias. A total of 20 studies were finally included in our study. Meta-analytical effect estimates indicated a positive association between prenatal exposure to PCB-138, PCB-153 and PCB-170 and an increased risk of ASD, with OR of 1.89 (95% CI = 1.21-2.95, I2 = 0%), 1.61 (95% CI = 1.05-2.47, I2 = 0%) and 1.46 (95% CI = 1.03-2.06, I2 = 0%) respectively. In contrast, PFDA was found inversely associated with the risk of ASD (OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.52-0.94, I2 = 0%). The level of evidence supporting a link between ASD risk and exposure to PCB-138, PCB-153, PCB-170, and PFDA was respectively categorized as low, low, moderate, and low. In summary, this systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that exposure to PCB-138, PCB-153, and PCB-170 correlates with a heightened risk of ASD, with evidence levels rated as "low", "low", and "moderate", respectively. In contrast, PFDA exposure appears to be inversely associated with ASD risk, with a "low" level of supporting evidence. However, due to the limited number of studies available for each exposure and outcome pairing, these results should be interpreted with caution. Sufficiently powered studies are needed to validate our findings.

Contamination in mangrove ecosystems: A synthesis of literature reviews across multiple contaminant categories

Mangrove forests are exposed to diverse ocean-sourced and land-based contaminants, yet mangrove contamination research lags. We synthesize existing data and identify major gaps in research on five classes of mangrove contaminants: trace metals, persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microplastics, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Research is concentrated in Asia, neglected in Africa and the Americas; higher concentrations are correlated with waste water treatment plants, industry, and urbanized landscapes. Trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, frequently at concentrations below regulatory thresholds, may bioconcentrate in fauna, whereas persistent organic pollutants were at levels potentially harmful to biota through short- or long-term exposure. Microplastics were at variable levels, yet lack regulatory and ecotoxicological thresholds. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products received minimal research despite biological activity at small concentrations. Given potential synergistic effects, multi-contaminant research, increased monitoring of multiple contaminant classes, and increased public outreach and involvement are needed.

"Nonlinear" pursuit of understanding pollutant accumulation and chemistry at environmental and biological interfaces

Over the past few decades, the public recognition of the prevalence of certain classes of pollutants, such as perfluoroalkyl substances and nanoplastics, within the environment, has sparked growing concerns over their potential impact on environmental and human health. Within both environmental and biological systems, the adsorption and structural organization of pollutants at aqueous interfaces can greatly impact the chemical reactivity and transformation. Experimentally probing chemical behavior at interfaces can often pose a problem due to bulk solvated molecules convoluting molecular signatures from interfacial molecules. To solve this problem, there exist interface-specific nonlinear spectroscopy techniques that can directly probe both macroscopic planar interfaces and nanoplastic interfaces in aqueous environments. These techniques can provide essential information such as chemical adsorption, structure, and reactivity at interfaces. In this perspective, these techniques are presented with obvious advantages for studying the chemical properties of pollutants adsorbed to environmental and biological interfaces.

A data-driven analysis of global research trends on dirty-dozen persistent organic pollutants

The occurrence, distribution, and fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been extensively studied worldwide; however, the patterns and dynamics of scientific publications on POPs are still unclear. In this study, the research trends on dirty dozen POPs, which are identified under the Stockholm Convention (SC) for immediate action were investigated and evaluated in a broad context to obtain up-to-date information. For this purpose, bibliometric analysis was carried out between 1945 and 2021 using the Web of Science (WoS) database. A total of 197,029 publications were analyzed. "Environmental Sciences" was the most popular research category and the USA was the leading country in dirty dozen POPs studies. The research hotspots are related to the most used keywords such as "Polychlorinated Biphenyls", "Dioxin" and "Persistent Organic Pollutants". In the evaluation of keyword clusters with highlighted research points, 7 clusters were obtained from the publications, which are related to the chemical properties, synthesis, structures, health effects, and analysis methods of dirty dozen POPs. The number of publications and, accordingly, the scientific interest in dirty dozen POPs listed under the SC has not reached equilibrium and continues regardless of the level of development of countries in the world.

Origin, dietary exposure, and toxicity of endocrine-disrupting food chemical contaminants: A comprehensive review

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a growing public health concern worldwide. Consumption of foodstuffs is currently thought to be one of the principal exposure routes to EDCs. However, alternative ways of human exposure are through inhalation of chemicals and dermal contact. These compounds in food products such as canned food, bottled water, dairy products, fish, meat, egg, and vegetables are a ubiquitous concern to the general population. Therefore, understanding EDCs' properties, such as origin, exposure, toxicological impact, and legal aspects are vital to control their release to the environment and food. The present paper provides an overview of the EDCs and their possible disrupting impact on the endocrine system and other organs.

Role of Microbes in the degradation of organic semivolatile compounds in polar ecosystems: A review

The Arctic and the Antarctic Continent correspond to two eco-regions with extreme climatic conditions. These regions are exposed to the presence of contaminants resulting from human activity (local and global), which, in turn, represent a challenge for life forms in these environments. Anthropogenic pollution by semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in polar ecosystems has been documented since the 1960s. Currently, various studies have shown the presence of SVOCs and their bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the polar regions with negative effects on biodiversity and the ecosystem. Although the production and use of these compounds has been regulated, their persistence continues to threaten biodiversity and the ecosystem. Here, we summarize the current literature regarding microbes and SVOCs in polar regions and pose that bioremediation by native microorganisms is a feasible strategy to mitigate the presence of SVOCs. Our systematic review revealed that microbial communities in polar environments represent a wide reservoir of biodiversity adapted to extreme conditions, found both in terrestrial and aquatic environments, freely or in association with vegetation. Microorganisms adapted to these environments have the potential for biodegradation of SVOCs through a variety of genes encoding enzymes with the capacity to metabolize SVOCs. We suggest that a comprehensive approach at the molecular and ecological level is required to mitigate SVOCs presence in these regions. This is especially patent when considering that SVOCs degrade at slow rates and possess the ability to accumulate in polar ecosystems. The implications of SVOC degradation are relevant for the preservation of polar ecosystems with consequences at a global level.

Environmental fate of sulfonated-PCBs: Soil partitioning properties, bioaccumulation, persistence, and mobility

Two new classes of PCB metabolites were recently discovered: sulfonated-polychlorinated biphenyls (sulfonated-PCBs) and hydroxy-sulfonated-polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-sulfonated-PCBs). These metabolites, originating from PCB degradation, seem to possess more polar characteristics than their parent compounds. However, no other information, such as their chemical identity (CAS number) or their ecotoxicity or toxicity, is available so far, although more than about one hundred different chemicals were observed in soil samples. In addition, their physico-chemical properties are still uncertain since only estimations are available. Here we show the first evidence on the fate of these new classes of contaminants in the environment, producing results from several experiments, to evaluate sulfonated-PCBs and OH-sulfonated-PCBs soil partition coefficients, degradation in soil after 18 months of rhizoremediation, uptake into plant roots and earthworms, as well as a preliminary analytical method to extract and concentrate these chemicals from water. The results give an overview of the expected environmental fate of these chemicals and open questions for further studies.

Confirming sulfluramid (EtFOSA) application as a precursor of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in Brazilian agricultural soils

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a manmade chemical with several industrial applications and also a potential byproduct of many other per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) in the environment. Due to the gathered evidence on its environmental persistence, long-range transport, toxicity, and bioaccumulative and biomagnifying properties, PFOS, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF), were listed for global restriction under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2009. Nevertheless, Brazil has granted an acceptable purpose exemption for using PFOSF to produce sulfluramid (EtFOSA) and to apply it as insecticide to control leaf-cutting ants of the genus Atta and Acromyrmex. Previous studies have pointed out EtFOSA as a precursor of PFOS in the environment, including in soils. Therefore, we aimed to confirm the role of EtFOSA in PFOS formation in soils representing areas where sulfluramid-based ant baits are used. A biodegradation assay was carried out by applying technical EtFOSA in triplicate samples of ultisol (PV) and oxisol (LVd) and measuring the contents of EtFOSA, perfluorooctane sulfonamide acetic acid (FOSAA), perfluorooctane sulfonamide (FOSA), and PFOS at seven moments (0, 3, 7, 15, 30, 60, and 120 days). The monitored byproducts started being noticed on the 15th day. After 120 days, PFOS yields were 30% for both soils, whereas FOSA yields were 46% (PV soil) and 42% (LVd soil) and FOSAA yields were 6% (PV soil) and 3% (LVd soil). It can be expected that FOSAA and FOSA contents will eventually be converted into PFOS in the environment and that the presence of plants could boost PFOS formation. Therefore, the ongoing extensive and intensive use of sulfluramid-based ant baits pose a considerable source of PFOS to the environment.

Addressing chemical pollution in biodiversity research

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and chemical pollution are planetary-scale emergencies requiring urgent mitigation actions. As these "triple crises" are deeply interlinked, they need to be tackled in an integrative manner. However, while climate change and biodiversity are often studied together, chemical pollution as a global change factor contributing to worldwide biodiversity loss has received much less attention in biodiversity research so far. Here, we review evidence showing that the multifaceted effects of anthropogenic chemicals in the environment are posing a growing threat to biodiversity and ecosystems. Therefore, failure to account for pollution effects may significantly undermine the success of biodiversity protection efforts. We argue that progress in understanding and counteracting the negative impact of chemical pollution on biodiversity requires collective efforts of scientists from different disciplines, including but not limited to ecology, ecotoxicology, and environmental chemistry. Importantly, recent developments in these fields have now enabled comprehensive studies that could efficiently address the manifold interactions between chemicals and ecosystems. Based on their experience with intricate studies of biodiversity, ecologists are well equipped to embrace the additional challenge of chemical complexity through interdisciplinary collaborations. This offers a unique opportunity to jointly advance a seminal frontier in pollution ecology and facilitate the development of innovative solutions for environmental protection.

First insight into accumulation of characteristics and tissue distribution of PCBs, PBDEs, and other BFRs in the living Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis)

Persistent organic pollutants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and other brominated flame retardants, were detected in the liver, muscle, and ovary tissues of the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis) incidentally caught around Gangga Island, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, on November 5, 2014. Concentrations of total PCBs (209 congeners, 300-2600 ng g^-1 lipid weight) in all tissues showed higher than those of PBDEs (41 congeners, 3.9-6.3 ng g^-1 lw) and BTBPE (1.1-3.6 ng g^-1 lw). The tissue-specific PCB and PBDE profiles were likely due to differences in the lipid composition. Toxic equivalent (TEQ) values of dioxin-like PCBs in coelacanth tissues were lower than the benchmark values for early-life fish. However, compared with the data reported for deep-sea fishes in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the relatively high concentrations of PCBs detected in this study raise concerns regarding Indonesian coelacanth conservation and habitat conditions.

Global ambient air quality monitoring: Can mosses help? A systematic meta-analysis of literature about passive moss biomonitoring

Surging incidents of air quality-related public health hazards, and environmental degradation, have prompted the global authorities to seek newer avenues of air quality monitoring, especially in developing economies, where the situation appears most alarming besides difficulties around 'adequate' deployment of air quality sensors. In the present narrative, we adopt a systematic review methodology (PRISMA, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) around recent global literature (2002-2022), around moss-based passive biomonitoring approaches which might offer the regulatory authorities a complementary means to fill 'gaps' in existing air quality records. Following the 4-phased search procedure under PRISMA, total of 123 documents were selected for review. A wealth of research demonstrates how passive biomonitoring, with strategic use of mosses, could become an invaluable regulatory (and research) tool to monitor atmospheric deposition patterns and help identifying the main drivers of air quality changes (e.g., anthropogenic and/or natural). Besides individual studies, we briefly reflect on the European Moss Survey, underway since 1990, which aptly showcases mosses as 'naturally occurring' sensors of ambient air quality for a slew of metals (heavy and trace) and persistent organic pollutants, and help assessing spatio-temporal changes therein. To that end, we urge the global research community to conduct targeted research around various pollutant uptake mechanisms by mosses (e.g., species-specific interactions, environmental conditions, land management practices). Of late, mosses have found various environmental applications as well, such as in epidemiological investigations, identification of pollutant sources and transport mechanisms, assessment of air quality in diverse and complex urban ecosystems, and even detecting short-term changes in ambient air quality (e.g., COVID-19 Lockdown), each being critical for the authorities to develop informed and strategic regulatory measures. To that end, we review current literature and highlight to the regulatory authorities how to extend moss-based observations, by integrating them with a wide range of ecological indicators to assess regional environmental vulnerability/risk due to degrading air quality. Overall, an underlying motive behind this narrative was to broaden the current regulatory outlook and purview, to bolster and diversify existing air quality monitoring initiatives, by coupling the moss-based outputs with the traditional, sensor-based datasets, and attain improved spatial representation. However, we also make a strong case of conducting more targeted research to fill in the 'gaps' in our current understanding of moss-based passive biomonitoring details, with increased case studies.

Predicting RP-LC retention indices of structurally unknown chemicals from mass spectrometry data

Non-target analysis combined with liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry is considered one of the most comprehensive strategies for the detection and identification of known and unknown chemicals in complex samples. However, many compounds remain unidentified due to data complexity and limited number structures in chemical databases. In this work, we have developed and validated a novel machine learning algorithm to predict the retention index (r[Formula: see text]) values for structurally (un)known chemicals based on their measured fragmentation pattern. The developed model, for the first time, enabled the predication of r[Formula: see text] values without the need for the exact structure of the chemicals, with an [Formula: see text] of 0.91 and 0.77 and root mean squared error (RMSE) of 47 and 67 r[Formula: see text] units for the NORMAN ([Formula: see text]) and amide ([Formula: see text]) test sets, respectively. This fragment based model showed comparable accuracy in r[Formula: see text] prediction compared to conventional descriptor-based models that rely on known chemical structure, which obtained an [Formula: see text] of 0.85 with an RMSE of 67.

Contaminant Cocktails of High Concern in Honey: Challenges, QuEChERS Extraction and Levels

Environmental pollution is a crucial problem in our society, having nowadays a better understanding of its consequences, which include the increase of contaminant cocktails present in the environment. The contamination of honeybees can occur through their interaction with the nearby environment. Therefore, if honeybees are previously contaminated, there is a possibility of contamination of their products, such as honey as natural, or minimally processed, product, resulting from the honeybees’ activity. Considering that honey is a highly consumed product, it is extremely necessary to control its quality and safety, including evaluating the presence and quantification of contaminants, which should follow monitoring studies and the legislation established by the European Union. This work aims to review the literature of different contaminants reported on honey, including pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and pharmaceuticals, focusing on the reports using the QuEChERS technique for the extraction. Furthermore, reports of microplastics on honey samples were also discussed. Despite the existence of several methods that identify and quantify these contaminants, few methods have been reported to operate with different groups of contaminants simultaneously. The development of methods with this characteristic (while being fast, low cost, and with a lower impact on the environment), monitoring studies to identify the risks, and an update on legislation are priority actions and future perspectives to follow.

Evaluation of the spatiotemporal variations of organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the forests of the Himalaya and Hengduan mountains using tree bark and tree core samples

There have been few reports of the large-scale spatial distribution and long-term historical variations of pollutants in high-altitude forests. Tree bark and tree core samples were collected from forests in the Himalaya and Hengduan mountains to determine the spatiotemporal variations of persistent organic pollutants. The average concentrations of dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tree bark samples were 9.09, 0.10, 0.13, 0.11and 26 ng/g dry weight, respectively, and 1.30, 0.02, 0.17, 0.07 and 186 ng/g dry weight, respectively, in tree core samples. Higher levels of these pollutants were observed in the forests on the southern slopes of the Himalaya (Nepal) and the southern part of the Hengduan mountains (Yunnan, China). Lower concentrations of these pollutants were found in the interior of the Tibetan Plateau on the northern slopes of the Himalaya as a result of the blocking effect of these mountain ranges. The concentrations of DDTs and HCHs in Himalayan tree cores showed increasing trends from 1956 to 1975 when they were used as pesticide extensively worldwide, especially in India. Peak concentrations of DDTs, HCHs and PAHs in tree cores of Qamdo located in Hengduan Mountains were observed in 2013, which were consistent with the history of industrial and agricultural development in Sichuan. This study provides new insights into the impact of atmospheric pollutants in South and Southeast Asia.

Development of structural equation models to unveil source-sink switches of mid-latitude soils for semi-volatile banned pesticides

A variety of semi-volatile banned pesticides (SVBPs) are ubiquitous in soils of mid-latitude regions. SVBPs undertake complicated soil-gas exchange processes in mid-latitude regions, challenging the understanding of source or sink roles of soils for the semi-volatile contaminants. Herein, we develop structural equation models (SEMs) to unveil source or sink roles of mid-latitude soils (Liaoning, China) in winter and summer for 12 SVBPs (7 organochlorine and 5 organophosphorus pesticides). The 12 SVBPs exhibit different distribution patterns in soils, dependent of sampling seasons, soil characteristics, topographic/climate conditions of soil sites and chemical properties of compounds. SEM Model I (winter) and Model II (summer) reveal the distribution patterns of SVBPs in soils over season changes, indicating sink-source switches of soils for SVBPS from winter to summer. In winter, soil is a sink of 12 SVBPs in the study area, associated with the inputs of SVBPs in soils by air-particulate partition and dry depositions. However, in summer, soil is mainly a source of the same contaminants, mainly through the volatilization and leaching of SVBPs in soils. The sink-source switches of soils for SVBPs are usually dependent of chemical properties of compounds to higher extents than soil characteristics and topographic/climate conditions of soil sites, though these parameters pose different influences in winter and summer. It has been revealed that soil acts as a sink of SVBPs in winter, associated with the inputs of SVBPs in soils by air-particulate partition and dry depositions, whereas soil acts as a source of SVBPs in summer, mainly through the volatilization and leaching of SVBPs in soils. This finding may provide new insights into the unique distribution patterns of SVBPs in soils in mid-latitude regions.

Abatement of the ecotoxicological risk of landfill leachate by heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation

Landfill leachates are highly contaminated liquid waste, and their treatment and detoxification are a challenging task. The current system of ecotoxicological risk assessment is complex and time-consuming. It is of fundamental importance to develop simpler and faster tools for the evaluation of the treated liquid waste and for an easier preliminary screening of the most active catalytic formulation/reaction conditions of the Fenton-like process. Here, several analytical techniques have been used for the assessment of the reduction of toxicity of the landfill leachate after Fenton process over copper-zirconia catalyst (ZrCu). Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and absorbable organic halogens (AOX) analysis have been coupled to achieve further insight into the degradation of contaminants. In addition, for the first time, the qualitative abatement of organic compounds is monitored through proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) analysis, providing a new method for evaluating the effectiveness of the treatment. Spectroscopic techniques reveal that the Fenton process induces a significant abatement of the aromatic and halogen compounds (51%) in the landfill leachate with a reduction of the toxicity that has been confirmed by ecotoxicological test with algae. These results validate the investigated tool for a simple rapid preliminary evaluation of the detoxification efficacy.

Snow-Dependent Biogeochemical Cycling of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at Coastal Antarctica

The temporal trend of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal waters with highly dynamic sources and sinks is largely unknown, especially for polar regions. Here, we show the concurrent measurements of 73 individual PAHs and environmental data, including the composition of the bacterial community, during three austral summers at coastal Livingston (2015 and 2018) and Deception (2017) islands (Antarctica). The Livingston 2015 campaign was characterized by a larger snow melting input of PAHs and nutrients. The assessment of PAH diagnostic ratios, such as parent to alkyl-PAHs or LMW to HMW PAHs, showed that there was a larger biodegradation during the Livingston 2015 campaign than in the Deception 2017 and Livingston 2018 campaigns. The biogeochemical cycling, including microbial degradation, was thus yearly dependent on snow-derived inputs of matter, including PAHs, consistent with the microbial community significantly different between the different campaigns. The bivariate correlations between bacterial taxa and PAH concentrations showed that a decrease in PAH concentrations was concurrent with the higher abundance of some bacterial taxa, specifically the order Pseudomonadales in the class Gammaproteobacteria, known facultative hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria previously reported in degradation studies of oil spills. The work shows the potential for elucidation of biogeochemical processes by intensive field-derived time series, even in the harsh and highly variable Antarctic environment.

West African e-waste-soil assessed with a battery of cell-based bioassays

Soil samples randomly taken from major e-waste sites in West Africa (Nigeria, Benin and Ghana) were examined for an extensive range of organic contaminants. Cytotoxicity measurements and assessment of activation of xeno-sensing receptors from fish (Atlantic cod) were employed as a battery of in vitro biological assays to explore the quality and toxicity profile of West African e-waste soil. The concentrations of the measured contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the e-waste soil differs significantly from the reference soil with chemical profiles typically dominated by legacy polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (405.8 μgkg^-1) and emerging organophosphate ester flame retardant tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) (404 μgkg^-1), in addition to the short chain perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) (275.3 μgkg^-1) and perfluorobutanoate (PFBA) (16 μgkg^-1). The study revealed that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) occurred only in e-waste soil from Ghana and ranged from 2.6 to 5.0 μgkg^-1. Overall, non-polar e-waste soil-derived extracts had a stronger effect on COS-7 cell viability than the polar extracts and elutriates. The highest receptor activation was observed with single polar and non-polar extracts from the Nigeria and Benin sites, indicating hotspots with Er-, PPARa- and Ahr-agonist activities. Thus, the results obtained with our battery of in vitro biological assays underscored these e-waste sites as remarkably polluted spots with complex toxicity profiles of great concern for human and environmental health.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans and mercury in vegetable of the contaminated Ya-Er Lake area: Concentrations, sources, and health risk

The Ya-Er Lake is a seriously polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) and mercury (Hg)-contaminated lake by pesticide and chlor-alkali plants in China. The oxidation pond method has been conducted to control pollution, moreover, the contaminated sediment was dredged and stacked, becoming a sediment stack yard for vegetable cultivation. To assess effects of oxidation pond method and dredging programme on pollution management and long-term risks of PCDD/Fs and Hg, the concentrations of PCDD/Fs, total Hg (THg), and methylmercury (MeHg) in soil and vegetable sampled from the sediment stack yard were measured and analyzed. Significantly positive relationships between concentrations of PCDD/Fs (p < 0.01), THg, and MeHg (p < 0.05) in edible parts of vegetable and soil were found, suggesting that bioaccumulation from contaminated soil derived from sediment dredging is important sources of PCDD/Fs and Hg in vegetable. Much higher PCDD/Fs (12 ± 9 pg/g dw) and Hg (THg, 0.14 ± 0.23 μg/g dw; MeHg,12.63 ± 13.31 ng/g dw) levels in vegetable were found compared with those from other contaminated regions, indicative of serious PCDD/Fs and Hg pollution in vegetable harvested from contaminated soil. Finally, the calculated provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI) values showed higher health risk of PCDD/Fs and Hg exposure to local residents through consumption of purple and white flowering stalk, and oilseed rape. Our study established a good model to evaluate the long-term risks of PCDD/Fs and Hg. Moreover, the results indicate that the oxidation pond method and dredging programme were not effective to remove PCDD/Fs and Hg in sediment, which shed new light on management strategy of PCDD/Fs and Hg pollution in contaminated regions.

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in soils and plants from Svalbard, Arctic: Levels, distribution, and potential sources

As persistent organic pollutants (POPs) newly banned by the Stockholm Convention, polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) have been widely detected in various environmental matrices. To date, however, the occurrence of PCNs in soils and plants in the Arctic environment has not been reported. In the current study, the concentrations and distribution of PCNs in Arctic soils and plants from Svalbard were analyzed. Total PCN concentrations ranged from 5.3 to 2550 pg/g dry weight (dw) in soils and 77 to 870 pg/g dw in plants. The higher levels of PCNs near the research stations and Longyearbyen town highlighted the significant influence of local anthropogenic emission sources. The composition of PCNs in Arctic soils and plants was dominated by lower chlorinated homologues, especially mono- to trichlorinated naphthalenes, which accounted for over 80 % of total PCNs in the soil and plant samples. The correlation analysis indicated the potential influences of total organic carbon (TOC) content on PCN concentrations in the soil, and octanol-air partition coefficients (K_OA) or octanol-water partition coefficients (K_OW) on PCN accumulation from soils to plants. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report on the concentration and distribution of PCNs in Arctic soils and plants.

Occurrence and sources of microplastics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments of Svalbard, Arctic

Due to the distinct environment condition and geographic location, Svalbard has been recognized as a potential pollution reservoir in the Arctic. In this study, 8 surface sediment samples were collected from two fjords in Svalbard (Kongsfjorden and Rijpfjorden) in 2017, and they were searched for microplastics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs were also investigated in 10 soil samples of Ny-Ålesund for local anthropogenic source analysis. The level of microplastics and other anthropogenic particles ranged from not detected (ND) to 4.936 particles/kg dry weight (DW). Fiber was the only shape of the microplastics found and three polymers (polyester, rayon and cellulose) were detected, which suggested that fisheries-related debris and textile materials were possible sources of microplastics and anthropogenic particles. For PAHs, the level of ∑₂₆PAH was 9.2 ng/g to 67.1 ng/g (DW), and were dominated by lnP and BghiP, indicating petroleum combustion source. Further analysis revealed that traffic emissions from cars and diesel combustion from a local power plant were major sources of PAHs in soils of Ny-Alesund, while traffic emissions from ships were the dominate source of PAHs in sediments of Kongsfjorden and Rijpfjorden. A higher level of PAHs was observed in Ny-Alesund, confirming an anthropogenic input, while transport via ocean currents might contribute to the higher abundance of microplastics in Rijpfjorden. Further research and even long-term observation of pollutants are needed to fully understand the pollution status in polar regions.

Remediation techniques for elimination of heavy metal pollutants from soil: A review

Contaminated soil containing toxic metals and metalloids is found everywhere globally. As a consequence of adsorption and precipitation reactions, metals are comparatively immobile in subsurface systems. Hence remediation techniques in such contaminated sites have targeted the solid phase sources of metals such as sludges, debris, contaminated soils, or wastes. Over the last three decades, the accumulation of these toxic substances inside the soil has increased dramatically, putting the ecosystem and human health at risk. Pollution of heavy metal have posed severe impacts on human, and it affects the environment in different ways, resulting in industrial anger in many countries. Various procedures, including chemical, biological, physical, and integrated approaches, have been adopted to get rid of this type of pollution. Expenditure, timekeeping, planning challenges, and state-of-the-art gadget involvement are some drawbacks that need to be properly handled. Recently in situ metal immobilization, plant restoration, and biological methods have changed the dynamics and are considered the best solution for removing metals from soil. This review paper critically evaluates and analyzes the numerous approaches for preparing heavy metal-free soil by adopting different soil remediation methods.

Occurrence and distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the atmosphere of the Andean city of Medellin, Colombia

Passive air sampling (PAS) was used to evaluate organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, polybrominated biphenyl, hexabromocyclododecane, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans, and perfluoroalkane substances in the atmosphere of Medellin, Colombia. PAS was carried out for three months (four quarters per year) over two consecutive years (2017 and 2018). This study allowed establishing the baseline of some pollutants in the city against which future temporal trends can be assessed. Furthermore, monitoring results suggested releases of DDT in the city or surrounding areas despite this pollutant was banned many years ago in the country. Moreover, this study evidenced the limited scope of the national laboratories to analyze persistent organic pollutants, specially brominated and fluorinated contaminants. However, there is an installed capacity to analyze organochlorine pesticide and indicator PCB in future national monitoring plans. Therefore, it is essential to realize efforts to improve the analytical capacity and increase the scope of the national laboratories. Furthermore, the PAS strategy was valuable for monitoring these pollutants in air. Finally, the results provide an overall view of persistent organic pollutants levels and represent an initial attempt to monitor and surveillance the releases of these pollutants in the city.

Persistent organic pollutants in model fungal membranes. Effects on the activity of phospholipases

Soils are the final sink for multiple organic pollutants emitted to the environment. Some of these chemicals which are toxic, recalcitrant and can bioaccumulate in living organism and biomagnify in trophic chains are classified persistent organic pollutants (POP). Vast areas of arable land have been polluted by POPs and the only economically possible means of decontamination is bioremediation, that is the utilization of POP-degrading microbes. Especially useful can be non-ligninolytic fungi, as their fast-growing mycelia can reach POP molecules strongly bond to soil minerals or humus fraction inaccessible to bacteria. The mobilized POP molecules are incorporated into the fungal plasma membrane where their degradation begins. The presence of POP molecules in the membranes can change their physical properties and trigger toxic effects to the cell. To avoid these phenomena fungi can quickly remodel the phospholipid composition of their membrane with employing different phospholipases and acyltransferases. However, if the presence of POP downregulates the phospholipases, toxic effects and the final death of microbial cells are highly probable. In our studies we applied multicomponent Langmuir monolayers with their composition mimicking fungal plasma membranes and studied their interactions with two different microbial phospholipases: phospholipase C (α-toxin) and phospholipase A1 (Lecitase ultra). The model membranes were doped with selected POPs that are frequently found in contaminated soils. It turned out that most of the employed POPs do not downregulate considerably the activity of phospholipases, which is a good prognostics for the application of non-ligninolytic fungi in bioremediation.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in corals and plankton from a coastal coral reef ecosystem, south China sea

Recent studies have indicated that coral mucus plays an important role in the bioaccumulation of a few organic pollutants by corals, but no relevant studies have been conducted on organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Previous studies have also indicated that OCPs widely occur in a few coral reef ecosystems and have a negative effect on coral health. Therefore, this study focused on the occurrence and bioaccumulation of a few OCPs, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and p,p'-methoxychlor (MXC), in the coral tissues and mucus as well as in plankton and seawater from a coastal reef ecosystem (Weizhou Island) in the South China Sea. The results indicated that DDTs were the predominant OCPs in seawater and marine biota. Higher concentrations of OCPs in plankton may contribute to the enrichment of OCPs by corals. The significantly higher total OCP concentration (∑₈OCPs) found in coral mucus than in coral tissues suggested that coral mucus played an essential role in resisting enrichment of OCPs by coral tissues. This study explored the different functions of coral tissues and mucus in OCP enrichment and biodegradation for the first time, highlighting the need for OCP toxicity experiments from both tissue and mucus perspectives.

Past, present and future trends of selected pesticidal and industrial POPs in Kuwait

Given the background of current global initiatives for controlling persistent organic pollutants (POPs), an overview of the scientific knowledge about the POPs issues in Kuwait is presented in this study. Both acute and chronic exposure to POPs can be associated with a wide range of deleterious health effects, including illness and death. POPs have drawn significant political and scientific interest in their fate and actions, particularly where local releases have resulted in dispersed contamination far from the source regions. These concerns inevitably led to the establishment of the Stockholm Convention (SC) on POPs. In recent years, Kuwait has carried out a wide variety of environmental research, in particular, on the monitoring of POPs in different matrices. The technological development facilitated to achieve the opposite monitoring of pesticidal and industrial POPs. The majority of these POPs are from a point source. Kuwait does not have pesticide manufacturing facilities and has not produced pesticides for POPs in the past. In the agriculture sector, Kuwait primarily imports pesticides for pest and disease control. This review encompasses the historical presence and current status of (pesticidal) organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and (industrial POPs) PCBs and PBDEs in Kuwait based on the export, import, consumption and usage. This research also contrasts pesticide and industrial POP data from various Kuwaiti environmental matrices with data from other parts of Asia, the EU, the USA and Africa.

Collision Cross Section Prediction with Molecular Fingerprint Using Machine Learning

High-resolution mass spectrometry is a promising technique in non-target screening (NTS) to monitor contaminants of emerging concern in complex samples. Current chemical identification strategies in NTS experiments typically depend on spectral libraries, chemical databases, and in silico fragmentation tools. However, small molecule identification remains challenging due to the lack of orthogonal sources of information (e.g., unique fragments). Collision cross section (CCS) values measured by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) offer an additional identification dimension to increase the confidence level. Thanks to the advances in analytical instrumentation, an increasing application of IMS hybrid with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) in NTS has been reported in the recent decades. Several CCS prediction tools have been developed. However, limited CCS prediction methods were based on a large scale of chemical classes and cross-platform CCS measurements. We successfully developed two prediction models using a random forest machine learning algorithm. One of the approaches was based on chemicals' super classes; the other model was direct CCS prediction using molecular fingerprint. Over 13,324 CCS values from six different laboratories and PubChem using a variety of ion-mobility separation techniques were used for training and testing the models. The test accuracy for all the prediction models was over 0.85, and the median of relative residual was around 2.2%. The models can be applied to different IMS platforms to eliminate false positives in small molecule identification.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure in women seeking in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer treatment (IVF-ET) in China: Blood-follicular transfer and associations with IVF-ET outcomes

As follicular fluid constitutes a critical microenvironment for the development of oocytes, investigation of environmental contaminants in follicular fluid may facilitate a better understanding of the influence of environmental exposure on reproductive health. In the present study, we aimed to investigate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure in women receiving in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) treatment, determine the blood-follicle transfer efficiencies (BFTE) of PFAS, and explore potential associations between PFAS exposure and selected IVF-ET outcomes. Our results revealed that n-PFOA was the most abundant PFAS in both serum and follicular fluid (FF) (median = 5.85 and 5.56 ng/mL, respectively), followed by n-PFOS (4.95 and 4.28 ng/mL), 6:2 Cl-PFESA (2.18 and 2.10 ng/mL), PFNA (1.37 and 1.37 ng/mL), PFUdA (0.33 and 0.97 ng/mL), PFDA (0.37 and 0.66 ng/mL), PFHxS (0.42 and 0.39 ng/mL), and PFHpS (0.11 and 0.10 ng/mL). The median BFTE ranged from 0.65 to 0.92 for individual PFAS, indicating a relatively high tendency of PFAS to cross the blood-follicle barrier (BFB). An inverted V-shaped trend was observed between the median BFTE and the number of fluorinated carbon atoms or the log K_ow (octanol-water partition coefficient) for individual PFAS, suggesting the influence by physicochemical properties and molecular structures. Although our data did not find any clear pattern in the link between blood or follicular fluid concentrations of PFAS and selected IVF-ET outcomes, our study raises the need for better characterization of exposure to environmental chemicals in follicular fluid together with its potential influence on reproductive health.

Legacy and new chlorinated persistent organic pollutants in the rivers of south India: Occurrences, sources, variations before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic

During pre-pandemic time, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in the surface water of Periyar River (PR) and Bharathappuzha River (BR) in Ernakulam and Malappuram districts of Kerala, respectively and Adyar River (AR) and Cooum River (CR) in Chennai district of Tamil Nadu. After the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, variation in OCPs and PCBs were evaluated for AR and CR. Dominance of β-HCH and γ-HCH in south Indian rivers indicate historical use of technical HCH and ongoing use of Lindane, respectively. In > 90 % sites, p,p'-DDT/ p,p'-DDE ratio was < 1, indicating past DDT usage. However during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, elevated p,p'-DDT in AR and CR reflects localized use of DDT possibly for vector control. Similarly, during the first wave of pandemic, over a 100-fold increase in PCB-52 in these rivers of Chennai mostly via surface run-off and atmospheric deposition can be reasoned with open burning of dumped waste including added waste plastic in the solid waste stream. On contrary, a significant (p < 0.05) decline of dioxin-like PCBs level, suggests lesser combustion related activities by the formal and informal industrial sectors after the lockdown phase in Tamil Nadu. Eco-toxicological risk assessment indicated a higher risk for edible fish in PR due to endosulfan.

Legacy and emerging organic contaminants in the polar regions

The presence of numerous emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and remobilization of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in polar regions have become significant concerns of the scientific communities, public groups and stakeholders. This work reviews the occurrences of EOCs and POPs and their long-range environmental transport (LRET) processes via atmosphere and ocean currents from continental sources to polar regions. Concentrations of classic POPs have been systematically monitored in air at several Arctic stations and showed seasonal variations and declining trends. These chemicals were also the major POPs reported in the Antarctica, while their concentrations were lower than those in the Arctic, illustrating the combination of remoteness and lack of potential local sources for the Antarctica. EOCs were investigated in air, water, snow, ice and organisms in the Arctic. Data in the Antarctica are rare. Reemission of legacy POPs and EOCs accumulated in glaciers, sea ice and snow may alter the concentrations and amplify their effects in polar regions. Thus, future research will need to understand the various biogeochemical and geophysical processes under climate change and anthropogenic pressures.
