Abstract
The quality of tomatoes is closely linked to their antioxidant content. However, the contribution of vitamin E to the total antioxidant capacity of these fruits remains unknown, along with its relationship with other components that benefit health. This study examined vitamin E content and composition and their correlation with the total antioxidant capacity in commercial tomato varieties, together with their modulation by abiotic stresses. We also assessed their relationship with other quality parameters such as total soluble sugars, titratable acidity, and sodium and potassium contents. A significant correlation was found between vitamin E content and the total antioxidant capacity, which was greatly influenced by the variety and abiotic stress. Furthermore, a strong association was found between vitamin E and potassium contents. We conclude that vitamin E, the total antioxidant capacity and potassium form a triangle of traits that can be coordinately selected to improve tomato quality.

Abstract
The Cereus genus includes medicinal plants native to the Neotropical region. Although their colorful fruits are consumed in arid and semi-arid areas, these are underused industrially due to limited knowledge. This review presents recent studies on the chemical, physicochemical, and bioactive aspects of Cereus fruits, along with pharmacotherapeutic benefits and potential applications of peel, pulp, and seed compounds. Cereus fruits exhibit high nutritional value and richness in bioactive compounds. Their peel has the highest antioxidant concentration, mainly phenolics, flavonoids, and carotenoids. Their pulp offers significant dietary fiber and energy. Seed flour and oil are rich in minerals (K, P and Mg), and also contain oleic, linoleic, and palmitic acids. Most studies focus on Cereus jamacaru, indicating the need to explore other Cereus species for their varied compositions, in addition to innovative physicochemical analyses to uncover relevant compounds.

Abstract
Chronic stress significantly contributes to the development of depressive disorders, with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis playing a central role in mediating stress responses. This review examines the neurobiological alterations in the hippocampus linked to HPA axis dysregulation in chronic stress-associated depressive disorders. The prolonged activation of the HPA axis disrupts cortisol regulation, leading to the decline of both physical and mental health. The chronic stress-induced HPA axis dysfunction interacts with inflammatory pathways and generates oxidative stress, contributing to cellular damage and neuroinflammation that further aggravates depressive symptoms. These processes result in structural and functional alterations in the hippocampus, which is essential for emotional regulation and cognitive function. Comprehending the impact of chronic stress on the HPA axis and associated neurobiological pathways is essential for formulating effective interventions for depressive disorders. This review summarises the existing findings and underscores the necessity for future investigations into intervention strategies to improve physical and psychological wellbeing targeting at HPA axis dysregulation for the betterment of psychological wellbeing and human health.

Abstract
The historical use of oils for beauty and hygiene dates back to ancient civilizations. While mineral oil and its derivatives dominated the personal care industry in the 20th century due to chemical stability and low cost, the environmental impact and sustainability concerns have driven a resurgence in the use of vegetable oils. Cottonseed oil derived from Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae) has been often overlooked in favor of other plant oils, likely due to cotton's primary use as a fiber crop. Yet cottonseed oil stands out in cosmetics for its beneficial linoleic to oleic acid ratio, which supports skin barrier function, and its rich profile of phytosterols and tocopherols that provide higher oxidative stability and extended shelf life. Cottonseed oil is also adaptable for use in a variety of formulations, offering a lightweight, non-greasy emollient base with potential applications in skin care, hair, and cleansing products. This review highlights cottonseed oil as a potentially underutilized ingredient in the personal care sector and emphasizes the need for further research and development to fully exploit its properties.

Abstract
Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) accelerates atherosclerosis. Vitamin E is a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant; some studies have shown its beneficial effects in reducing oxidized LDL levels. Due to the inconsistent reports, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of vitamin E supplementation on oxidation of LDL levels. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were systematically searched to find clinical trials published in English. A total of 21 records with 29 intervention arms were included in this review. In the meta-analysis of 6 studies that reported changes in oxidized LDL levels, a significant decrease in LDL oxidation was observed (95% CI: -1.44 [-2.5, -0.38]; I2 = 95.8%, P < 0.001; Tau-squared: 1.6171). Moreover, a meta-analysis of 7 studies that reported lag time as a measure of LDL oxidation showed that vitamin E supplementation significantly increased the lag time of LDL oxidation (95% CI: 20.45 [12.46, 28.43]; I2 = 95.9%, P < 0.001; Tau-squared: 103.3545). Two studies used the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) assay to evaluate the susceptibility to LDL oxidation. One of them showed a significant decrease in LDL susceptibility to oxidation after supplementation with tocopherol, while the other one did not show a significant effect. Vitamin E significantly reduced the susceptibility of LDL to oxidation and increased the lag time of LDL oxidation.

Abstract
Background/Objectives:Lepidium sativum, Ferula hermonis, Origanum majorana, and Eruca sativa are frequently consumed as a traditional Middle Eastern medicine to promote health and treat various diseases. However, concerns have been raised about their possible harmful effect in humans. Limited research has examined their chronic toxicity in rats, and their combined exposure effects are still unknown. Hence, this research aimed to evaluate their potential hepato- and nephrotoxic effects. Methods: Aqueous extracts of the selected plants, with a dose of 100 mg/kg, were administered separately and as a mixture daily for 60 days. Blood and tissue were sampled from 28 rats, and organ weight, biochemical markers for kidney and liver function, and histopathological examination were assessed. Results: The results indicated increased liver weight, liver and kidney malondialdehyde, alanine transaminase, and urea, and decreased serum creatinine and kidney glutathione levels. Additionally, histological examinations showed liver and kidney architectural damage. Further, the extent of toxicity varied among the plants. Conclusions: In conclusion, the results revealed that the corresponding plant extracts' oral administration affects biological functions and promotes liver and kidney oxidative damage in rats, with FH and ES exhibiting the highest level of liver toxicity and ES and MIX showing the highest level of kidney toxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The oxidative balance score (OBS) measures oxidative stress from diet and lifestyle, but research linking it to colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is scarce and varies in calculation methods. METHODS We conducted a case-control study in Guangzhou, China, involving 2799 CRC cases and an equal number of sex- and age-matched controls. We adopted and compared four different methods for calculating the OBSs. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) for the relationship between OBS and CRC risk were determined using an unconditional logistic regression model. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore potential non-linear relationships. Additionally, stratified analyses were performed by sex, and subgroup analyses were performed based on the tumor site. RESULTS Among the four OBSs assessed, OBS-1 demonstrated superior performance. Higher adherence to four OBSs was associated with a lower risk of CRC. The adjusted ORs (95%CIs) for the highest quartile compared to the lowest quartile were as follows: 0.42 (0.35, 0.50) for OBS-1, 0.43 (0.36, 0.51) for OBS-2, 0.50 (0.42, 0.59) for OBS-3, and 0.43 (0.36, 0.51) for OBS-4. Linear relationships were observed between four OBSs and CRC risk (all p-Nonlinear > 0.05). Stratified analysis by sex revealed that all four OBSs were negatively associated with CRC risk in both male and female patients. Subgroup analysis by cancer site indicated that four OBSs were negatively associated with the risk of both colon and rectal cancer. CONCLUSIONS All four OBSs were negatively associated with CRC risk, with OBS-1 showing the strongest association in our analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Remnant cholesterol (RC) is a risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. Vitamin E has antioxidant properties, making it a potentially effective management tool for preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the relationship between vitamin E intake and RC remains unclear. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) Survey 2007-2020. 11,585 participants (aged ≥20, 48% male) were included. Information on vitamin E intake (dietary vitamin E intake and total vitamin E intake) was collected. RC was defined as serum total cholesterol minus high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Survey-weighted linear regression models and a restricted cubic spline (RCS) were used to test the relationship between vitamin E intake and RC. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were also performed to verify the robustness of the results. RESULTS After adjusting for all potential confounders (demographics, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, diet, and comorbidities), dietary vitamin E intake was negatively associated with RC (β = -0.21, 95% CI: (-0.29, -0.12), p < 0.0001), and this negative association was also present between total vitamin E intake and RC (β = -0.12, 95% CI: (-0.18, -0.06), p < 0.0001). The RCS analysis revealed a nonlinear negative association between vitamin E intake and RC. The negative correlation existed in different subgroups, with no interaction except for the "use of vitamin E supplements" subgroup. CONCLUSION Vitamin E intake showed a protective association with RC. The results suggest that increasing dietary vitamin E intake may help reduce RC levels and CVD risk.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is a major environmental contaminant significantly impacting human health. As a naturally occurring element, mercury has been extensively mobilized into aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems over thousands of years, largely due to anthropogenic activities such as mining and metal extraction. Acute mercury toxicity causes extensive physiological damage, affecting vital organs including the kidneys, heart, liver, brain, and skin. Phytochemicals, known for their diverse pharmacological properties, have shown promise in mitigating metal-induced toxicities, including mercury. These compounds exhibit protective effects against mercury-induced multi-organ damage through mechanisms such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition, and anti-inflammatory activity. This review explores the therapeutic potential of traditional herbal plants and their phytoconstituents in alleviating mercury-induced toxicity. Key findings highlight several plants with hepatoprotective effects, mitigating necrosis and anatomical distortion in liver cells. Phytochemicals such as quercetin, rutin, salicylic acid, ferulic acid, 6-gingerol, and 6-shogaol play pivotal roles in downregulating molecular pathways activated by mercury exposure. Other bioactive compounds, including acetogenin and gallic acid, exhibit potent antioxidant properties, with mechanisms such as ROS scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. This review also highlights certain compounds, such as aloe-emodin and gentisic acid, which exhibit potential for mitigating mercury toxicity through mechanisms like inhibiting oxidative stress and enhancing cellular defense pathways. However, these compounds remain underexplored, with no significant studies conducted to evaluate their efficacy against mercury-induced toxicity, presenting a critical area for future research. These findings underscore the potential of phytochemicals as effective agents in combating mercury toxicity through antioxidant mechanisms, cellular signalling regulation, and heavy metal chelation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common inflammatory condition affecting the vaginal microbiome. In the present study we aimed to explore the relationship between dietary inflammatory index, plant-based dietary index, and BV. METHODS In this case-control study, 143 individuals with BV and 151 healthy participants aged 15-45 years were included. Bacterial vaginosis diagnosis was based on the Amsel criteria by a gynecologist. Participants' dietary intakes over the past year were assessed using a 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models were employed to analyze the association between dietary inflammatory index, plant-based dietary index, and BV odds. RESULTS Our study revealed that elevated dietary inflammatory index scores were strongly associated with higher BV odds in the crude model (odds ratio [OR]: 2.88, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.57-5.30, P value <0.001), and even after accounting for potential confounding factors (adjusted OR: 3.52, 95% CI: 1.66-7.46, P value = 0.001). While no significant relationship was observed between total plant-based dietary index and healthy plant-based dietary index scores with BV odds, a clear positive association existed between unhealthy plant-based dietary index and the odds of BV (aOR: 2.13, 95% CI: 1.09-4.15, P value = 0.018). CONCLUSION A positive correlation may exist between unhealthy plant-based dietary index and the likelihood of BV. Furthermore, the dietary inflammatory index may remain linked to increased BV odds.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. The processes underlying the pathophysiology of AD are still not fully understood despite a great deal of research. Since mitochondrial dysfunction affects cellular energy metabolism, oxidative stress, and neuronal survival, it is becoming increasingly clear that it plays a major role in the development of AD. This review summarizes the recent developments of mitochondrial dysfunction in AD, emphasizing mitochondrial biogenesis, dynamics, axonal transport, interactions between endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, mitophagy, and mitochondrial proteostasis. It emphasizes how tau and amyloid-beta (Aβ) proteins worsen mitochondrial and synaptic dysfunction by impairing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, causing oxidative stress, and upsetting equilibrium. Additionally, important processes controlling mitochondrial activity and their correlation to the brain health are also discussed. One of the promising therapeutic approaches to lessen neurodegeneration and cognitive decline in AD is to improve mitochondrial activity. This study highlights possible directions for creating focused therapies to impede the advancement of AD through incorporating knowledge of mitochondrial biogenesis and its related mechanisms.

Abstract
Inflammaging refers to chronic, low-grade inflammation that becomes more common with age and plays a central role in the pathophysiology of various vascular diseases. Key inflammatory mediators involved in inflammaging contribute to endothelial dysfunction and accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis. In addition, specific pathological mechanisms and the role of inflammasomes have emerged as critical drivers of immune responses within the vasculature. A comprehensive understanding of these processes may lead to innovative treatment strategies that could significantly improve the management of age-related vascular diseases. Emerging therapeutic approaches, including cytokine inhibitors, senolytics, and specialized pro-resolving mediators, aim to counteract inflammaging and restore vascular health. This review seeks to provide an in-depth exploration of the molecular pathways underlying vascular inflammaging and highlight potential therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
The imbalance in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with endogenous antioxidant capacity leads to oxidative stress, which drives many disorders, especially in the skin. In such conditions, supplementing exogenous antioxidants may help the body prevent the negative effect of ROS. However, the skin, as the outermost barrier of the body, provides a perfect barricade, making the antioxidant delivery complicated. Several strategies have been developed to enhance the penetration of antioxidants through the skin, one of which is nanotechnology. This review focuses on utilizing several nanocarrier systems, including nanoemulsions, liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), and polymeric nanoparticles, for transporting antioxidants into the skin. We also reveal ROS formation in the skin and the role of antioxidant therapy, as well as the natural sources of antioxidants. Furthermore, we discuss the clinical application of topical antioxidant therapy concomitantly with the current status of using nanotechnology to deliver topical antioxidants. This review will accelerate the advancement of topical antioxidant therapy.

Abstract
Synbiotics may be useful to mitigate intestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis. Here we show that combining 13'-carboxychromanol (δT3-13'), a metabolite of vitamin E δ-tocotrienol (δT3) via omega-oxidation, and Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremori (L. cremoris), but neither agent alone, significantly attenuated dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced fecal bleeding and diarrhea, histologic colitis and interleukin 1β in mice. The combination of δT3-13'+L. cremoris also synergistically prevented DSS-caused compositional changes in gut microbiota and enriched beneficial bacteria including Lactococcus and Butyricicoccus. Interestingly, the anti-colitis effect correlated with the concentrations of δT3-13'-hydrogenated metabolite that contains 2 double bonds on the side chain (δT2-13'), instead of δT3-13' itself. Moreover, in contrast to δT3-13', combining δT3 and L. cremoris showed modest anti-colitis effects and did not prevent colitis-associated dysbiosis. In addition, ex vivo anaerobic incubation studies revealed that gut microbes selected by δT3-13' in the animal study could metabolize this compound to δT2-13' via hydrogenation, which appeared to be enhanced by L. cremoris. Overall, our study demonstrates that combining δT3-13' and L. cremoris can synergically prevent dysbiosis, and may be a novel synbiotic against colitis potentially via promoting δT3-13' metabolizers, which in turn contributes to superior beneficial effects of the combination.

Abstract
Mushrooms are considered as nutraceutical foods that can effectively prevent diseases such as cancer and other serious life-threatening conditions include neurodegeneration, hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia. The Cantharellus cibarius, also known as the "Golden chanterelle" or "Golden girolle," is a significant wild edible ectomycorrhizal mushroom. It is renowned for its delicious, apricot-like aroma and is highly valued in various culinary traditions worldwide. It is well known for its nutritional, nutraceutical, and therapeutic properties. The high nutritional value of C. cibarius is attributed to its abundant carbohydrates, proteins, β-glucans, dietary fiber, and low-fat content. It also contains medicinal polysaccharides (β-glucans), proteins (lectins and selenoproteins), important fatty acids (linoleic and omega-6), vitamins, and minerals (N, P, K, Ca, Zn, Ag, Se, etc.). The sporocarp of C. cibarius contains a diverse array of bioactive metabolites, including flavonoids, phenolics, sterols, fatty acids, organic acids, indole groups, carbohydrates, vitamins (tocopherols), amino acids, enzymes, bioelements, carotenoids, and 5'-nucleotides. C. cibarius has a wide array of biological properties, such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, anthelmintic, insecticidal, antihypoxia, antihyperglycemic, wound-healing, cytotoxic, and iron-chelating activity. Thus, the present review gives an overview of C. cibarius, covering its chemical composition, ecological significance, postharvest preservation strategies, and potential applications in dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals. It also dives into the etymology, taxonomy, and global distribution of the renowned "Golden Chanterelle." Furthermore, there is a need to valorize waste materials created during production and processing, as well as to acquire a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of action of bioactive compounds in mushrooms.

Abstract
Naturally occurring vitamin E is a lipophilic plant-derived molecule corresponding to the 2 R forms of alpha-tocopherol. A series of natural analogs or tocochromanols are present in nature, including β-, γ- and δ-tocopherol (βT, γT, δT), the corresponding tocotrienols (αTE, βTE, γTE, δTE) and tocomonoenols. Differences between these analogs as lipophilic antioxidants and modulators of molecular processes suggest specific therapeutic properties against various disorders associated with acute and chronic inflammation. However, hepatic metabolism of these compounds via cytochrome P450-initiated side chain ω-oxidation involves the production of long-chain metabolites (LCMs) followed by intermediate (ICMs) and short-chain metabolites (SCMs), respectively. Despite the initial studies indicating these metabolites as catabolic-end products, recent findings identify their importance in providing biological functions. In this scope, LCMs, especially 13'-carboxychromanols (13'-COOHs), have been reported to hold stronger anti-inflammatory capacity than their unmetabolized precursors due to their ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase-catalyzed eicosanoid formation, as well as their modulation of the pro-inflammatory transcriptional protein nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). Also, these LCMs have been reported to enhance detoxification and lipid metabolism pathways associated with cellular inflammation by modulating the nuclear receptors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) and pregnane x receptor (PXR). These properties of LCMs will be described in this narrative review article focusing on recent information regarding their bioavailability, anti-inflammatory effects, and mechanisms of action in acute and chronic inflammatory disorders.

Abstract
Vitamin E, encompassing tocopherols and tocotrienols is celebrated for its powerful antioxidant properties, which help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative damage. Over the years, research has shown that both tocopherols and tocotrienols offer significant benefits, including protection against radiation damage, cholesterol regulation, cardiovascular health, and neurological disorders. This wide range of benefits highlights the need for further exploration of vitamin E's role in managing various diseases. One particularly promising area is its potential application in treating ocular diseases like glaucoma. Despite advances in treatment, current options have limitations, making the investigation of alternative approaches crucial. Omics technologies, which allow for a detailed examination of biological systems, could provide valuable insights into how tocopherols and tocotrienols work at a molecular level. Their neuroprotective and antioxidative properties make them promising candidates for glaucoma management. Additionally, the sustainability of vitamin E is noteworthy, as by-products from its production can be repurposed into valuable resources for nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. As research continues, integrating omics technologies with the study of vitamin E derivatives could unveil new therapeutic possibilities, further enhancing our understanding of its diverse health benefits and its potential role in preventing and managing diseases.

Abstract
In this study, we evaluated the effects of vitamin E δ-tocotrienol (DT3) and aspirin on Wnt signaling in human colon cancer stem cells (CCSCs) and in the prevention of adenoma formation in APCmin/+ mice. We found that knockdown of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene led to subsequent activation of Wnt signaling in colon epithelial cells (NCM460-APCsiRNA) and induction of β-catenin and its downstream target proteins c-MYC, cyclin D1, and survivin. When aspirin and DT3 were combined, cell growth and survival were inhibited and apoptosis was induced in colon epithelial cells and CCSCs. However, DT3 and/or aspirin had little or no effect on the control of normal colon epithelial cells (NCM460-NCsiRNA). The induction of apoptosis was directly related to the activation of caspase 8 and cleavage of BH3-interacting-domain (BID) to truncated BID. In addition, DT3- and/or aspirin-induced apoptosis was associated with cleaved Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), elevated levels of cytosolic cytochrome c and BAX, and depletion of antiapoptotic protein BCl-2 in CCSCs. The combination of aspirin and DT3 inhibited the self-renewal capacity, Wnt/β-catenin receptor activity, and expression of β-catenin and its downstream targets c-MYC, cyclin D1, and survivin in CCSCs. We also found that treatment with DT3 alone or combined with aspirin significantly inhibited intestinal adenoma formation and Wnt/β-catenin signaling and induced apoptosis, compared with vehicle, in APCmin/+ mice. Our study demonstrated a rationale for further investigation of the combination of DT3 and aspirin for colorectal cancer prevention and therapy.

Abstract
Spinal cord injury (SCI) initiates a cascade of secondary damage driven by oxidative stress, characterized by the excessive production of reactive oxygen species and other reactive molecules, which exacerbate cellular and tissue damage through the activation of deleterious signaling pathways. This review provides a comprehensive and critical evaluation of recent advancements in antioxidant-based therapeutic strategies for SCI, including natural compounds, RNA-based therapies, stem cell interventions, and biomaterial applications. It emphasizes the limitations of single-regimen approaches, particularly their limited efficacy and suboptimal delivery to injured spinal cord tissue, while highlighting the synergistic potential of combination therapies that integrate multiple modalities to address the multifaceted pathophysiology of SCI. By analyzing emerging trends and current limitations, this review identifies key challenges and proposes future directions, including the refinement of antioxidant delivery systems, the development of multi-targeted approaches, and strategies to overcome the structural complexities of the spinal cord. This work underscores the pressing need for innovative and integrative therapeutic approaches to advance the clinical translation of antioxidant-based interventions and improve outcomes for SCI patients.

Abstract
Background: Alcohol-induced osteoporosis is a significant health concern, impairing bone formation and enhancing resorption, thereby weakening skeletal integrity. This study examines the effects of palm vitamin E on bone histomorphometry in a male rat model of alcohol-induced osteoporosis. Methods: Three-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into seven groups, with one baseline control group (BC) and six experimental groups undergoing a two-phase treatment. In the first month, the control group received normal saline, while experimental groups received intraperitoneal alcohol (3 g/kg) three times weekly. For the subsequent two months, alcohol treatment continued in one group (A), while others received olive oil (C), saline (AN), alpha-tocopherol (AA), or palm vitamin E (AE) orally. Results: Femur histomorphometric analysis post-sacrifice showed that alcohol exposure significantly decreased osteoblastic activity and impaired bone microarchitecture, evidenced by reduced Ob.S/BS, OS/BS, OV/BV, Tb.Th, BV/TV, and Tb.N, alongside increased Oc.S/BS, ES/BS, and Tb.Sp. Both alpha-tocopherol and palm vitamin E improved bone parameters, with palm vitamin E showing superior efficacy except in OV/BV. Conclusions: These findings suggest that palm vitamin E may offer a therapeutic benefit for mitigating alcohol-induced bone damage.

Abstract
Vitamin E, comprising tocopherols and tocotrienols, is an essential antioxidant known for its numerous health benefits. This review traces the evolution of vitamin E production, from traditional chemical synthesis and plant extraction methods to cutting-edge microbial cell factories. Chemical synthesis, while well-established, fails to produce specific stereoisomers, and its application is limited to animal feed due to concerns about chemical residues and limited bioactivity. Plant extraction, although yielding natural vitamin E, is constrained by resource availability and high cultivation costs. Recent advancements in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology have revolutionized vitamin E bioproduction, particularly through the use of engineered microbial cell factories. This review highlights the progress of vitamin E biosynthesis in plants and microorganisms and the key metabolic engineering strategies adopted. We also discuss the existing challenges and future perspectives. When these challenges are overcome, microbial cell factories present a sustainable and effective method to fulfill the increasing demand for high-quality vitamin E.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamins are essential nutrients that play an indispensable role in maintaining the vital functions of the human body. A growing number of studies have shown a link between vitamins and cancer. However, there is no systematic review and bibliometric analysis in this field. This study aims to summarize the hotspots and emerging research topics in this field of vitamins and cancer research. METHODS Articles on the topic of vitamins and cancer published between 2003 and 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection database (WOSCC) on May 1, 2023. Subsequently, we conducted VOSviewer and CiteSpace to examine the annual output distribution, countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, co-cited references, and keywords. RESULTS A total of 3166 publications were extracted using a timespan of 2003 to 2022. The number of publications has grown rapidly over the past 20 years. Most publications were from the United States; Harvard University was the most active institutions; Giovannucci stood out among authors with the highest number of publications, citations and H-index; Cancer Epidem Biomar published the most papers in this field; the highest cited reference was published in Nat Rev Cancer, authored by Feldman in 2014. Breast cancer was the most common type of cancer, while vitamin D was a research hotspot in this field. Oxidative stress may be the primary anticancer mechanism of vitamins, while also involving epithelial-mesenchymal transition, apoptosis, polymorphism, and calcium metabolism. "nanoparticle" may be the new focus of attention in the next few years. CONCLUSION This study presented an overview of the major research directions of vitamins and cancer by bibliometric methods over the past 2 decades. The results could reveal the research trends and the hotspots in the field and provide helpful information for clinical treatments of cancer.

Abstract
A neurodegenerative illness is a disorder in which the brain and/or spinal cord's neurons, or nerve cells, gradually deteriorate and disappear. These illnesses often get worse with time and can seriously affect movement, cognition, and other neurological functions. Psoriasis is a long-term autoimmune skin condition marked by fast skin cell growth that results in red, elevated areas coated in silvery-white scales. It can affect several body parts, such as the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back, and it is not communicable. The build-up of amyloid beta [Aβ] protein is linked to elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (Kim et al. 2020). These ROS can trigger multiple pathways, including MAPK, NFkB, JAK/STAT, and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), ultimately playing a role in the development of neurodegenerative illnesses like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and psoriasis. People who have psoriasis are more likely to acquire AD, as psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that is genetically connected. Because of the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of citrus fruits neurodegenerative and psoriasis disease may be prevented. The neuroprotective action of bioactives in citrus fruits involves the inhibition of inflammation through the control of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and the activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Due to their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory qualities, polyphenols may be able to control the immune response in psoriasis. We performed a thorough review in order to investigate for the first time to understand the role of citrus fruits in comorbid neurodegenerative disorders associated with psoriasis. For better understanding into the possible applications of citrus fruits in treating psoriasis and neurodegenerative disease would require additional studies focusing directly on the relationship between citrus fruits consumption in managing neurodegenerative and psoriasis disease.

Abstract
Insulin resistance is caused by the abnormal secretion of proinflammatory cytokines in adipose tissue, which is induced by an increase in lipid accumulation in adipocytes, hepatocytes, and myocytes. The inflammatory pathway involves multiple targets such as nuclear factor kappa B, inhibitor of nuclear factor κ-B kinase, and mitogen-activated protein kinase. Vitamins are micronutrients with anti-inflammatory activities that have unclear mechanisms. The present study aimed to describe the putative mechanisms of vitamins involved in the inflammatory pathway of insulin resistance. The strategy to achieve this goal was to integrate data mining and analysis, target prediction, and molecular docking simulation calculations to support our hypotheses. Our results suggest that the multitarget activity of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B12, C, D3, and E inhibits nuclear factor kappa B and mitogen-activated protein kinase, in addition to vitamins A and B12 against inhibitor of nuclear factor κ-B kinase. The findings of this study highlight the pharmacological potential of using an anti-inflammatory and multitarget treatment based on vitamins and open new perspectives to evaluate the inhibitory activity of vitamins against nuclear factor kappa B, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and inhibitor of nuclear factor κ-B kinase in an insulin-resistant context.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The infiltration of macrophages into adipose tissue mediates chronic inflammation that is associated with insulin resistance in obesity. Although vitamin E is beneficial against insulin resistance, its impact on adipose tissue inflammation has not been elucidated. This study aims to investigate the effects of α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol, major vitamin E isoforms, on the interaction between macrophages and adipocytes with regard to obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance. MATERIALS/METHODS Hypertrophied 3T3-L1 adipocytes were cocultured with RAW 264.7 macrophages and treated with α-tocopherol or γ-tocopherol at 12.5, 25, and 50 µM. The inflammatory cytokines (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6) and free fatty acid (FFA) release were measured by assay kits, and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) and c-Jun NH2 terminal kinase (JNK) signals were evaluated by immunoblotting. Glucose uptake was measured with a fluorescent glucose derivative. RESULTS Treatment with α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol restrained the coculture-induced increase in cytokines and FFA release. γ-Tocopherol exhibited greater suppression of inflammatory cytokines at 12.5 and 25 µM (P < 0.001). Both tocopherols inhibited NF-κB activation by limiting translocation of NF-κB (p65) to the nucleus, with γ-tocopherol showing a stronger effect compared to α-tocopherol. α-Tocopherol inhibited JNK phosphorylation at 50 μM, whereas γ-tocopherol did not. Furthermore, coculture with macrophages impaired glucose uptake in response to insulin, but both tocopherols restored insulin responsiveness (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION α-Tocopherol and γ-tocopherol effectively mitigate inflammation induced by adipocyte-macrophage interaction, thereby ameliorating coculture-induced insulin resistance. These findings suggest the therapeutic potential of tocopherols in managing obesity-related metabolic dysfunction.

Abstract
Natural forms of vitamin E include four tocopherols and four tocotrienols (α, β, γ, and δ), which are essential as lipophilic antioxidants. Among these eight isoforms, α-tocopherol (αT), the predominant form of vitamin E found in tissues, has traditionally received the most attention in disease prevention research due to its robust antioxidant activity. However, recent studies suggest that other forms of vitamin E exhibit distinct and potentially more potent beneficial activities in disease prevention and treatment. These non-αT forms of vitamin E are metabolized in vivo, producing various metabolites, including 13'-carboxychromanol, though their biological roles remain largely unknown. Notably, sphingolipids, known for their significant roles in cancer biology, may be involved in the anticancer effects of vitamin E through the modulation of sphingolipid metabolism. This review focuses on the diverse biological activities of different vitamin E forms and their metabolites, particularly their anticancer effects, while highlighting the underlying mechanisms, including their novel impact on regulating sphingolipid pathways. By elucidating these interactions, we aim to provide a deeper understanding on the multifaceted roles of vitamin E in cancer prevention and therapy.

Abstract
Haematococcus pluvialis contains valuable bioactive compounds, including astaxanthin, proteins, and fatty acids. Astaxanthin is known for its various health benefits, such as preserving the redox balance and reducing inflammation. However, its low stability and poor water solubility present challenges for various applications. Hot-melt extrusion (HME) technology enhances the aqueous solubility of H. pluvialis extracts, increasing the usable astaxanthin content through nanoencapsulation (HME-DDS-applied extracts, ASX-60F and ASX-100F). This study compared the effects of HME-DDS-derived extracts (ASX-60F and ASX-100F) and the non-applied extract (ASX-C) under inflammatory and oxidative stress conditions. In animal models of sepsis, 60F and 100F treatment exhibited higher survival rates and a lower expression of pro-inflammatory biomarkers compared to those treated with C. In lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, nitric oxide (NO) production and the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible NO synthase were reduced by 60F or 100F treatments via ERK/p-38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. Moreover, 60F or 100F inhibited reactive oxygen species production regulated by nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) signaling. Collectively, these findings suggest that HME-DDS-derived H. pluvialis extracts exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by inhibiting MAPK phosphorylation and activating Nrf2/HO-1 expression.

Abstract
Vitamins are essential components of enzyme systems involved in normal growth and function. The quantitative estimation of the proportion of dietary vitamins, that is in a form available for utilization by the human body, is limited and fragmentary. This review provides the current state of knowledge on the bioavailability of thirteen vitamins and choline, to evaluate whether there are differences in vitamin bioavailability when human foods are sourced from animals or plants. The bioavailability of naturally occurring choline, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K in food awaits further studies. Animal-sourced foods are the almost exclusive natural sources of dietary vitamin B-12 (65% bioavailable) and preformed vitamin A retinol (74% bioavailable), and contain highly bioavailable biotin (89%), folate (67%), niacin (67%), pantothenic acid (80%), riboflavin (61%), thiamin (82%), and vitamin B-6 (83%). Plant-based foods are the main natural sources of vitamin C (76% bioavailable), provitamin A carotenoid β-carotene (15.6% bioavailable), riboflavin (65% bioavailable), thiamin (81% bioavailable), and vitamin K (16.5% bioavailable). The overview of studies showed that in general, vitamins in foods originating from animals are more bioavailable than vitamins in foods sourced from plants.

Abstract
Objective Behcet's uveitis (BU) is a type of uveitis with a high rate of blindness, characterized by anterior segment inflammation, vitreous opacity, and retinal vasculitis. Its pathogenesis is still unclear. Fuchs syndrome (Fuchs) is another common type of uveitis, which clinically presents with anterior segment inflammation and vitreous opacity, but rarely causes blindness. This study aims to compare the gut microbiota and metabolites of two different types of uveitis to clarify whether the differences in clinical manifestations are relevant to the alterations in gut microbiota. Methods Faecal samples were collected from new-onset BU (n = 11) patients without systemic treatment and other diseases. 16S rRNA and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) were performed to analyze gut microbes and metabolites. Fuchs (n = 15) was used as the disease control, and healthy controls (n = 18) without autoimmune diseases and systemic medication were included. Results Microbial composition and metabolite profiles differed significantly among the three groups. Compared to controls, Fusicatenibacter and eight metabolites were specifically altered in BU patients, and Pantoea and five metabolites in Fuchs. Pathways involving delta-tocopherol, palmitic acid, and serotonin are significantly disrupted in BU patients. Pathways involving linoleic acid are dysregulated considerably in Fuchs. Microbial markers consisting of 4 genera and 7 metabolites can respectively distinguish BU patients from controls. AUC values of metabolite markers were greater than those of microbial markers. Furthermore, serum zonulin levels were significantly elevated in both types of uveitis, with no difference between them. Correlation analysis revealed correlations between zonulin levels and multiple microbes. Conclusions Patients with BU and Fuchs syndrome showed significant differences in gut microbiota and metabolites. Disruption of the intestinal mucosal barrier was observed in both types of uveitis. However, the mechanism of different intestinal microbiota causing different clinical manifestations needs to be studied in the future.

Abstract
Excessive exposure to sunlight can contribute for skin photo-damage, such as sunburn, dryness, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, immunosuppressive events and skin sensitization reactions. The use of aftersun products is an effective strategy to reduce the visible signs and symptoms of acute photodamage in the skin. Aiming to unveil the active ingredients able to offset acute sun damage, this work focuses on the characterization of the aftersun products market. A total of 84 after-sun formulations from 41 international brands currently marketed in Portugal were analyzed concerning the composition described on the product label, identifying natural and synthetic/semi-synthetic ingredients with the ability to mitigate solar-induced effects. The majority of aftersun formulations contained ingredients derived from terrestrial and marine sources (> 80%). An in-depth examination of these compounds is also offered, revealing the top of the most used natural and synthetic/semi-synthetic ingredients present in aftersun products, as well as their mechanism of action. A critical appraisal of the scientific data was made aiming to highlight the scientific evidence of ingredients able to mitigate skin photodamage. Amino acids and peptides, and A. barbadensis extract were tested for their in vivo efficacy. Nevertheless, all the ingredients were analyzed with in vitro studies as preliminary screening before in vivo, ex vivo and/or clinical studies. In summary, this study provides an overview of the use of active ingredients in commercial aftersun products to understand better the benefits associated with their use in cosmetic formulations and identify opportunities for innovation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between vitamin E and the risk of kidney disease is well documented in observational studies, but the role of vitamin E in kidney disease remain inconclusive. Here, we evaluated the causal effect of vitamin E on the risk of multiple kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, and dialysis. METHODS We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis from large-scale trans-ancestry genome-wide association studies to determine whether there was a significant causal relationship between vitamin E and multiple kidney diseases in European, American, and Asian ancestry. Instrumental genetic variants associated with vitamin E were selected, and summary statistic-based methods of inverse variance weighted, MR Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode methods were conducted. Pleiotropy and sensitivity were assessed. RESULTS We obtained 87 instrumental genetic variants in European ancestry and found no causal relationship between vitamin E and chronic kidney disease, membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, and dialysis with no heterogeneity and pleiotropy. We obtained 18 instrumental genetic variants in Asian ancestry and vitamin E had no causal relationship with membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, and IgA nephropathy with no heterogeneity and pleiotropy. In African ancestry, 25 instrumental genetic variants were obtained and no causal relationship was identified with no heterogeneity and pleiotropy. CONCLUSION Our study first suggested plausible non-causal associations between vitamin E and multiple kidney diseases among different ancestry.

Abstract
Mitochondria are central to cellular energy production, and their dysfunction is a major contributor to oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, pivotal factors in aging, and related diseases. With aging, mitochondrial efficiency declines, leading to an increase in ROS and persistent inflammatory responses. Therapeutic interventions targeting mitochondrial health show promise in mitigating these detrimental effects. Antioxidants such as MitoQ and MitoVitE, and supplements like coenzyme Q10 and NAD + precursors, have demonstrated potential in reducing oxidative stress. Additionally, gene therapy aimed at enhancing mitochondrial function, alongside lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise and caloric restriction can ameliorate age-related mitochondrial decline. Exercise not only boosts mitochondrial biogenesis but also improves mitophagy. Enhancing mitophagy is a key strategy to prevent the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria, which is crucial for cellular homeostasis and longevity. Pharmacological agents like sulforaphane, SS-31, and resveratrol indirectly promote mitochondrial biogenesis and improve cellular resistance to oxidative damage. The exploration of mitochondrial therapeutics, including emerging techniques like mitochondrial transplantation, offers significant avenues for extending health span and combating age-related diseases. However, translating these findings into clinical practice requires overcoming challenges in precisely targeting dysfunctional mitochondria and optimizing delivery mechanisms for therapeutic agents. Continued research is essential to refine these approaches and fully understand the interplay between mitochondrial dynamics and aging.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to examine the associations of the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) with sarcopenic obesity (SO) using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Methods Data were gathered from NHANES between 2001 and 2004. To examine the relationship between CDAI and the occurrence of SO, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. Subgroup analyses were performed to demonstrate the stability of the results. Restricted cubic splines were utilized to examine the non-linear correlations. Results A total of 2,333 elderly individuals were included in the study. In the multivariate logistic regression crude model, we revealed an odds ratio (OR) of 0.928 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.891-0.965, p < 0.001] for the correlation between CDAI and SO. The ORs were 0.626 (95% CI, 0.463-0.842) and 0.487 (95% CI, 0.354-0.667) for CDAI tertiles 2 and 3, respectively (p for trend <0.001), after full adjustment. The subgroup analysis findings demonstrated a reliable and enduring connection between CDAI and SO across various subgroups. However, the strength of the correlation between CDAI and SO was significantly affected by diabetes (p for interaction = 0.027). Moreover, restricted cubic spline analysis revealed an L-shaped relationship. Conclusion The present study identified an L-shaped correlation between CDAI and SO in elderly participants' demographics. The implications of these findings were significant for future studies and the formulation of dietary guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The objective of our study was to examine the association between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in adults. METHODS AND RESULTS Data was gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2001 and 2018. To examine the connection between CDAI and ASCVD, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. Restricted cubic splines were utilized to examine non-linear correlations, and the inflection point was identified using a two-piecewise linear regression approach. Subgroup analyses were performed to demonstrate stability of results. A total of 44,494 individuals were included in the study. The multivariate logistic regression model was fully adjusted and revealed an odds ratio of 0.968 (95% CI: 0.959-0.978; P < 0.001) for the correlation between CDAI and ASCVD. Furthermore, individuals in the highest quartile of CDAI exhibited a decreased risk of ASCVD compared to those in the lowest quartile [0.716 (0.652-0.787); P < 0.001]. Moreover, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis revealed non-linear relationship between CDAI and ASCVD, with inflection point at -0.387. The analysis of subgroups showed that the importance of CDAI remained consistent among various age, sex, race, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity. CONCLUSIONS Our research revealed an inverse and non-linear relationship between CDAI and ASCVD in adults. The implications of these findings are significant for future studies and the formulation of dietary guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of humans, nutrient malabsorption can result in fat-soluble vitamin deficiency, especially of vitamin D. In veterinary species, decreased concentrations of vitamin D are relatively common in dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE), but data on the status of other fat-soluble vitamins (FSVs) is lacking. OBJECTIVES Determine the serum concentrations of retinol, vitamin D, and α-tocopherol in dogs with CE compared with healthy dogs and compare clinical, clinicopathologic variables between CE and healthy dogs to detect associations with decreased FSVs concentrations. ANIMALS Eighteen client-owned dogs with CE and 33 healthy dogs. METHODS Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), serum retinol and α-tocopherol concentrations were compared between groups. Correlations and multiple regression modeling were used to examine the relationship between serum 25(OH)D, retinol, and α-tocopherol concentrations and clinical and clinicopathological variables. RESULTS Dogs with low serum albumin concentrations were more likely to have lower 25(OH)D concentrations than dogs with normal serum albumin concentration. Dogs with CE had higher serum concentrations of retinol, and variable α-tocopherol concentrations. The cause of these dysregulated vitamin concentrations is unclear and requires further study. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Dogs with severe forms of CE should be monitored for decreased concentrations of 25(OH)D. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the clinical relevance and the possible benefit of vitamin D supplementation in these patients.

Abstract
Vitamins are micronutrients necessary for the normal function of the body. Although each vitamin has different physicochemical properties and a specific role in maintaining life, they may also possess a common characteristic, i.e., antioxidant activity. Oxidative stress can harm all the main biological structures leading to protein, DNA and lipid oxidation, with concomitant impairment of the cell. It has been established that oxidative stress is implicated in several pathological conditions such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, inflammation and metabolic syndrome. In this review we investigate the influence of oxidative stress on the above conditions, examine the interrelation between oxidative stress and inflammation and point out the importance of vitamins in these processes, especially in oxidative load manipulation and metabolic abnormalities.

Abstract
The rising prevalence of diabetes mellitus has casted a spotlight on one of its significant sequelae: cognitive impairment. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, originally developed for diabetes management, are increasingly studied for their cognitive benefits. These benefits may include reduction of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, decrease of amyloid burdens, enhancement of neuronal plasticity, and improved cerebral glucose utilization. The multifaceted effects and the relatively favorable side-effect profile of SGLT2 inhibitors render them a promising therapeutic candidate for cognitive disorders. Nonetheless, the application of SGLT2 inhibitors for cognitive impairment is not without its limitations, necessitating more comprehensive research to fully determine their therapeutic potential for cognitive treatment. In this review, we discuss the role of SGLT2 in neural function, elucidate the diabetes-cognition nexus, and synthesize current knowledge on the cognitive effects of SGLT2 inhibitors based on animal studies and clinical evidence. Research gaps are proposed to spur further investigation.

Abstract
Succinate has been shown to be a potentially beneficial nutritional supplement with a diverse range of physiological functions. However, it remains unknown whether succinate supplementation regulates lipid metabolism in chickens. The aim of this study was to explore how succinate affects fat deposition and the underlying mechanism involved in broilers and to determine the most appropriate level of succinate supplementation in the diet. A total of 640 one-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups with 8 replicates and 20 broilers per replicate. A basal diet was provided to the control group (CON). The experimental broilers were fed diets containing 0.2% (L), 0.4% (M), or 0.6% (H) succinate and the study was lasted for 21 d. The linear (l) and quadratic (q) effects of succinate addition were determined. The results indicated that supplementation with 0.4% succinate reduced ADFI, serum triglycerides (l, q; P < 0.05), glucose (q; P < 0.05), and increased high-density lipidprotein cholesterol (l, q; P < 0.05) concentrations in broilers. Moreover, 0.4% succinate affects lipid metabolism by decreasing the abdominal fat percentage and adipocyte surface area, the expression of genes that promote liposynthesis in the abdominal fat and liver, as well as increasing the expression of genes that promote lipolysis in the abdominal fat and liver. In addition, increased cecal propionic acid content (q, P < 0.05) was found in the M group compared to the CON group. The 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that group M altered cecum microbial composition by increasing the abundance of genera such as Blautia and Sellimonas (P < 0.05). LC-MS metabolomic analysis revealed that the differential metabolites between the M and CON groups were enriched in amino acid-related pathways. In conclusion, the optimum level of succinate added to broiler diets in the present study was 0.4%. Succinate can potentially reduce fat accumulation in broilers by modulating the composition of the gut flora and amino acid metabolism related to lipid metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, indicating systemic inflammation. Abnormal lipid levels and deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals could also contribute to elevated hs-CRP levels. By broadly looking at the cross-correlations between inflammatory, lipid, and micronutrient markers, we aim to highlight the key associations at the serological levels. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on 1,014 free-living individuals who tested for cardiovascular and micronutrient panels along with hs-CRP at Vibrant America Clinical Laboratory. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Based on parametric t-tests, significant variations between the sexes (Ma1) were observed for cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, vitamin A, vitamin D3, serum copper, and valine. Pearson's correlation showed a high-significant positive correlation between hs-CRP and triglycerides, folate, serum copper, and manganese.

Abstract
The intricate relationship between the gastrointestinal (GI) microbiome and the progression of chronic non-communicable diseases underscores the significance of developing strategies to modulate the GI microbiota for promoting human health. The administration of probiotics and prebiotics represents a good strategy that enhances the population of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal lumen post-consumption, which has a positive impact on human health. In addition, dietary fibers serve as a significant energy source for bacteria inhabiting the cecum and colon. Research articles and reviews sourced from various global databases were systematically analyzed using specific phrases and keywords to investigate these relationships. There is a clear association between dietary fiber intake and improved colon function, gut motility, and reduced colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. Moreover, the state of health is reflected in the reciprocal and bidirectional relationships among food, dietary antioxidants, inflammation, and body composition. They are known for their antioxidant properties and their ability to inhibit angiogenesis, metastasis, and cell proliferation. Additionally, they promote cell survival, modulate immune and inflammatory responses, and inactivate pro-carcinogens. These actions collectively contribute to their role in cancer prevention. In different investigations, antioxidant supplements containing vitamins have been shown to lower the risk of specific cancer types. In contrast, some evidence suggests that taking antioxidant supplements can increase the risk of developing cancer. Ultimately, collaborative efforts among immunologists, clinicians, nutritionists, and dietitians are imperative for designing well-structured nutritional trials to corroborate the clinical efficacy of dietary therapy in managing inflammation and preventing carcinogenesis. This review seeks to explore the interrelationships among dietary antioxidants, dietary fiber, and the gut microbiome, with a particular focus on their potential implications in inflammation and cancer.

Abstract
Oxidative stress, driven by reactive oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur species (ROS, RNS, RSS), poses a significant threat to cellular integrity and human health. Generated during mitochondrial respiration, inflammation, UV exposure and pollution, these species damage cells and contribute to pathologies like cardiovascular issues, neurodegeneration, cancer, and metabolic syndromes. Lifestyle factors exert a substantial influence on oxidative stress levels, with mitochondria emerging as pivotal players in ROS generation and cellular equilibrium. Phytochemicals, abundant in plants, such as carotenoids, ascorbic acid, tocopherols and polyphenols, offer diverse antioxidant mechanisms. They scavenge free radicals, chelate metal ions, and modulate cellular signalling pathways to mitigate oxidative damage. Furthermore, plants thriving in high-altitude regions are adapted to extreme conditions, and synthesize secondary metabolites, like flavonoids and phenolic compounds in bulk quantities, which act to form a robust antioxidant defence against oxidative stress, including UV radiation and temperature fluctuations. These plants are promising sources for drug development, offering innovative strategies by which to manage oxidative stress-related ailments and enhance human health. Understanding and harnessing the antioxidant potential of phytochemicals from high-altitude plants represent crucial steps in combating oxidative stress-induced disorders and promoting overall wellbeing. This study offers a comprehensive summary of the production and physio-pathological aspects of lifestyle-induced oxidative stress disorders and explores the potential of phytochemicals as promising antioxidants. Additionally, it presents an appraisal of high-altitude medicinal plants as significant sources of antioxidants, highlighting their potential for drug development and the creation of innovative antioxidant therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
In this work, three out of five types of oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions were selected to replace pork backfat to reduce the fat content and the improve monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid content in dry cured sausage ('chorizo'). Different characteristics of the new product were studied: the texture profile, color, nutritional value, lipid profile, vitamin E and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and sensory qualities. The use of emulsions to replace the animal fat affected all color parameters, obtaining darker, less red and yellow products, which could impact the consumer's purchase intention. This replacement also altered the texture parameters, increasing or decreasing the hardness in comparison with the control sample. The cohesiveness, however, decreased in all cases, which meant that when the samples are cut for consumption, they disintegrated more than the traditional ones. The most relevant aspect for nutritional value is that the use of the new emulsions helped to reduce the total fat and energy value of the reformulated samples. The most significant aspect is that this reformulation helped to reduce the fat content-specifically, saturated fat-while increasing the content of Omega 3/6. The new formulas contained significant quantities of TBA and vitamin E when comparing them with the traditional product.

Abstract
The pandemic has brought attention to the importance of a healthy immune system in preventing infectious diseases. In this in-depth review, the process by which nutritional interventions and fundamental nutrients affect immune function has been discussed with the goal of enhancing the body's natural defenses against viral infections. We explored the complex interplay between diet and immunology, highlighting the essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive substances that are crucial for enhancing immune response. We also investigated the effect of dietary patterns and supplementation methods on immune function. We assessed the effectiveness and potential mechanisms of action of various nutritional therapies in modifying immune responses through a thorough examination of scientific literature. Additionally, we go through the significance of individualized nutrition and highlight possible factors to consider for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people with chronic conditions. This review attempts to provide a thorough understanding of the role of diet in boosting immunity by synthesizing available research. It also offers insights into practical methods for enhancing the immune function during the current epidemic and in the future.

Abstract
The role of dietary vitamins and antioxidants in preventing colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant area of research within nutritional oncology. However, the relationship between these nutrients and CRC prevention is complex and influenced by factors such as dosage, timing, and individual health status. This review aims to comprehensively analyze and synthesize the existing scientific literature on the potential role of dietary vitamins and antioxidants in preventing CRC. A comprehensive literature review was conducted by searching electronic databases to identify studies examining the prospected impacts of dietary vitamins and antioxidants on the prevention of CRC. According to the outcomes of this review, this research review shows a complex link between vitamins and CRC. While some vitamins such as B2, B6, and D seemed helpful, others such as A and E had mixed results. Vitamin C deficiency was even linked to worse outcomes in cancer patients. Overall, the studies suggest focusing on a balanced diet rich in various vitamins rather than relying solely on individual supplements to prevent CRC. On the other hand, the results of our review suggest that the relationship between antioxidant intake and CRC is more intricate than previously thought. Data from this review indicates that taking specific antioxidant supplements such as selenium and vitamin E does not seem to offer the same protection. This suggests that a balanced diet with a variety of antioxidants is more helpful than focusing on single supplements. While we did not observe a direct association, future studies could investigate how different types and combinations of antioxidants might influence CRC development. In conclusion, the present systematic review highlights the need for more research on the relationship between vitamins, antioxidants, and CRC. We need to understand how these nutrients affect both the survival of people with CRC and the prevention of the disease. This will help us determine the best ways to use vitamins and antioxidants in CRC management and prevention.

Abstract
The vitamin E family contains α-tocopherol (αT), βT, γT, and δT and α-tocotrienol (TE), βTE, γTE, and δTE. Research has revealed distinct roles of these vitamin E forms in prostate cancer (PCa). The ATBC trial showed that αT at a modest dose significantly decreased PCa mortality among heavy smokers. However, other randomized controlled trials including the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) indicate that supplementation of high-dose αT (≥400 IU) does not prevent PCa among nonsmokers. Preclinical cell and animal studies also do not support chemopreventive roles of high-dose αT and offer explanations for increased incidence of early-stage PCa reported in the SELECT. In contrast, accumulating animal studies have demonstrated that γT, δT, γTE, and δTE appear to be effective for preventing early-stage PCa from progression to adenocarcinoma in various PCa models. Existing evidence also support therapeutic roles of γTE and its related combinations against advanced PCa. Mechanistic and cell-based studies show that different forms of vitamin E display varied efficacy, that is, δTE ≥ γTE > δT ≥ γT >> αT, in inhibiting cancer hallmarks and enabling characteristics, including uncontrolled cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and inflammation possibly via blocking 5-lipoxygenase, nuclear factor κB, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α, modulating sphingolipids, and targeting PCa stem cells. Overall, existing evidence suggests that modest αT supplement may be beneficial to smokers and γT, δT, γTE, and δTE are promising agents for PCa prevention for modest-risk to relatively high-risk population. Despite encouraging preclinical evidence, clinical research testing γT, δT, γTE, and δTE for PCa prevention is sparse and should be considered.

Abstract
Oxidative stress plays a central role in most chronic liver diseases and, in particular, in metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), the new definition of an old condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The mechanisms leading to hepatocellular fat accumulation in genetically predisposed individuals who adopt a sedentary lifestyle and consume an obesogenic diet progress through mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum dysfunction, which amplifies reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, lipid peroxidation, malondialdehyde (MDA) formation, and influence the release of chronic inflammation and liver damage biomarkers, such as pro-inflammatory cytokines. This close pathogenetic link has been a key stimulus in the search for therapeutic approaches targeting oxidative stress to treat steatosis, and a number of clinical trials have been conducted to date on subjects with NAFLD using drugs as well as supplements or nutraceutical products. Vitamin E, Vitamin D, and Silybin are the most studied substances, but several non-pharmacological approaches have also been explored, especially lifestyle and diet modifications. Among the dietary approaches, the Mediterranean Diet (MD) seems to be the most reliable for affecting liver steatosis, probably with the added value of the presence of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), a healthy food with a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, and variable concentrations of phenols (oleocanthal) and phenolic alcohols, such as hydroxytyrosol (HT) and tyrosol (Tyr). In this review, we focus on non-pharmacological interventions in MAFLD treatment that target oxidative stress and, in particular, on the role of EVOO as one of the main antioxidant components of the MD.

Abstract
The critical role of oxidative stress in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been recognized by researchers recently, and natural antioxidants have been demonstrated to have anti-AD activity in animal models, such as Ginkgo biloba extract, soy isoflavones, lycopene, and so on. This paper summarized these natural antioxidants and points out that natural antioxidants always have multiple advantages which are help to deal with AD, such as clearing free radicals, regulating signal transduction, protecting mitochondrial function, and synaptic plasticity. Based on the available data, we have created a relatively complete pathway map of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and AD-related targets and concluded that oxidative stress caused by ROS is the core of AD pathogenesis. In the prospect, we introduced the concept of a combined therapeutic strategy, termed "Antioxidant-Promoting Synaptic Remodeling," highlighting the integration of antioxidant interventions with synaptic remodeling approaches as a novel avenue for therapeutic exploration.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Our objective was to measure and compare the intake of macro and micronutrients in a cohort of individuals with Metabolic Syndrome Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) compared with matched controls to identify areas of further research in this area; we identified nutrition-associated associations with MASLD in the United States general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used the 2017 - 2018 NHANES dataset. Elastography Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP score>280) in the absence of other liver disease was defined as MASLD in adults (>18). Advanced fibrosis was defined by transient elastography >10 kPa. Controls were adults without liver disease. RESULTS 1648 MASLD cases (11.4 % advanced fibrosis) and 2527 controls were identified. MASLD cases were older (P<0.001), more likely males (P = 0.01), less likely to have a college education (P = 0.04) and more likely married (P = 0.002). MASLD cases were more likely to be of Mexican American or Hispanic ethnicity (P = 0.002), have higher BMI, and have higher prevalence of diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypertension (P<0.001 for all). MASLD cases had higher hs-CRP (P = 0.02) and ferritin (P = 0.02). MASLD cases had lower total (P = 0.004) and added vitamin E in their diet (P = 0.002), lower vitamin K intake (P = 0.005), and higher selenium intake (P = 0.03). Caloric intake (P = 0.04), carbohydrate intake (P = 0.02), cholesterol intake (P = 0.03) and saturated fatty acid intake (P = 0.05) were higher in MASLD. Individuals with MASLD were more likely to be on a diet (P<0.001), sedentary (P = 0.008) and less likely to participate in moderate or vigorous recreational activities (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The deficiencies of micronutrients and excess of macronutrients point to oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory state, and lipotoxicity as pathways linking the US diet to MASLD. MASLD patients are more often on special diets, which may reflect prior provider counseling on diet changes to improve health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish the reference range of serum concentration of vitamin A (VA) and vitamin E (VE) in Southern Sichuan area of China. METHODS From August 1, 2021, to May 31, 2023, 9482 blood tablets were received for the screening of VA and VE. The information was divided into four different age groups: ≤1 year old, 1< to ≤6 years, 6< to ≤17 years, and 17< to ≤59 years. In each age group, the four seasons were further subdivided into spring, summer, autumn, and winter, as well as male and female genders. The serum concentration of VA and VE was detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), and the reference range was established for verification. RESULTS The concentration of VA and VE in 9482 cases showed skewed distribution. When comparing between different age groups, the serum concentration of VA and VE was statistically significant (p < 0.05). While comparing different seasons, the serum VA levels in different seasons were significantly different (p < 0.05) except in summer and autumn. There was statistical significance in VE level in different seasons (p < 0.05). And while comparing different genders, there was no statistical significance in VA concentration levels (p > 0.05). The VE concentration levels were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The established reference range was established and verified, and the results were in accordance with the standard. CONCLUSION The reference range of VA and VE should be set according to different ages, different seasons, and different genders.

Abstract
The antioxidant properties of 21 proteinogenic amino acids (AAs) and 3,4-dioxophenylanine (DOPA) have been studied in implicit water using density functional theory (DFT). All the calculations have been performed according to three oxidation mechanisms: (1) hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT); (2) single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT); and (3) sequential proton-loss electron transfer (SPLET). As a result, five AAs with the highest antioxidant capacity have been established: DOPA, selenocysteine (Sec), tyrosine (Tyr), cysteine (Cys), and tryptophan (Trp). Also, global reactivity in terms of hardness/softness has been evaluated, as well as Fukui indices of local reactivity. Trp has been determined as the most reactive molecule, whereas selenium atom of Sec has been established as the most reactive atom. All the findings are in agreement with the recent literature on both experimental and theoretical studies of amino acids antioxidant activity. However, to the best of my knowledge, the calculations for one electron redox reactions of zwitterionic amino acids in implicit water have been performed for the first time.
