Effect of nocturnal road traffic noise exposure and annoyance on objective and subjective sleep quality

Anthropogenic disturbance affects calling and collective behaviour in corvid roosts

Acoustic communication plays an important role in coordinating group dynamics and collective movements across a range of taxa. However, anthropogenic disturbance can inhibit the production or reception of acoustic signals. Here, we investigate the effects of noise and light pollution on the calling and collective behaviour of wild jackdaws (Corvus monedula), a highly social corvid species that uses vocalizations to coordinate collective movements at winter roosting sites. Using audio and video monitoring of roosts in areas with differing degrees of urbanization, we evaluate the influence of anthropogenic disturbance on vocalizations and collective movements. We found that when levels of background noise were higher, jackdaws took longer to settle following arrival at the roost in the evening and also called more during the night, suggesting that human disturbance may cause sleep disruption. High levels of overnight calling were, in turn, linked to disruption of vocal consensus decision-making and less cohesive group departures in the morning. These results raise the possibility that, by affecting cognitive and perceptual processes, human activities may interfere with animals' ability to coordinate collective behaviour. Understanding links between anthropogenic disturbance, communication, cognition and collective behaviour must be an important research priority in our increasingly urbanized world. Evaluation of flow, supply, and demand for noise reduction in urban area, Hamadan in Iran

Noise pollution is one of the consequences of urbanization that can cause environmental disturbances in urban areas. Urban ecosystems provide noise reduction services through Urban Green infrastructures (UGIs). Many studies have been conducted to evaluate and model traffic noise, but none have addressed the flow, supply, and demand of noise reduction ecosystem services. The main purpose of this paper is to present a new methodology for estimating flow, supply, and demand for noise reduction in Hamadan city that has not been mentioned in any paper so far. UGIs were classified into six main categories: agricultural lands, gardens, parks, abandoned lands, single trees, and street trees. A total of 57 sampling stations for sound measurement were made in August 2018. The current map of noise pollution (flow) was created using the Kriging method. The amount of supply was measured up to a distance of 50 meters from the main roads based on two approaches (the distance effect and the sound barrier effect). To quantify the demand, the current sound intensity level in the noise-sensitive land uses was compared with standards. Zonal statistics was used for spatial analysis of supply-demand in the urban neighborhood as a working unit. Results showed that at distances of 5m, 10m, 15m, and 20m, the average noise reduction was found to be 1.61, 2.83, 3.92, and 5.33 dB, respectively. Sound barriers at distances of 5m and 10m resulted in an average sound reduction of 1.61 and 2.83 dB, respectively. Individual trees, strip trees, abandoned lands, parks, and gardens led to a decrease in traffic noise by 0.3, 1, 0.1, 3.5, and 4.5 dB, respectively. The clustering analysis revealed a significant spatial clustering of noise pollution in Hamedan. The results and new methodology of this research can be used in similar areas to estimate the supply and demand of noise reduction and also for decision-makers to take management actions to increase supply and meet the demand for noise reduction service.

Childhood sound disturbance and sleep problems in Alpine valleys with high levels of traffic exposures and greenspace

Sound disturbance and sleep problems are regarded as the most common adverse effects of environmental noise but evidence of the role of air pollution and greenspace is scant. This is especially true for children who find themselves in a sensitive developmental period and experience their environment differently than adults. This study examined the joint effects of traffic exposures and residential greenspace on child sound disturbance and sleep problems via perceptions of neighborhood quality. We used cross-sectional data for 1251 schoolchildren (8-12 years) in the Tyrol region of Austria/Italy. Questionnaires provided information on sociodemographic and housing factors, perceived neighborhood quality, sound disturbance in different situations, and sleep problems. Modelled acoustic indicators included day-evening-night sound levels and the highest percentile level, and night-time sound level and a bespoke sleep disturbance index. Nitrogen dioxide served as a proxy for traffic-related air pollution. The normalized difference vegetation index was calculated as a measure of residential greenspace, and presence of a domestic garden was self-reported. Results showed that higher level of traffic-related exposures was positively associated with sound disturbance and sleep problems, while living in a greener area, especially in a house with a garden, was associated with lower sound disturbance and less sleep problems even in the presence of traffic. Traffic exposures contributed to more unfavorable, and greenspace to more positive perceptions in terms of traffic-related stressors, opportunities for outdoor recreation, and general satisfaction with the neighborhood. This indirect path seemed more important for greenspace than for traffic exposures. In conclusion, it seems advantageous to combine traffic-related mitigation with improving access to greenspace in interventions for supporting the acoustic comfort of children during day and nighttime. Even highly nature-dominated environments could still benefit from proximal green infrastructure, especially from domestic gardens.

Characterizing environmental pollution with civil complaints and social media data: A case of the Greater Taipei Area

Environmental pollution is a major cause of nuisance and ill health among urban residents. Complaints are traditionally self-reported through phone-based systems. Social media provide novel channels to detect pollution-related incidents; however, their reliability has not been sufficiently evaluated. This study aimed to compare pollution incidents expressed on Twitter with those extracted from phone-based systems and to identify the built environment and socioeconomic attributes that can predict the likelihood of pollution incidents. A total of 639,746 tweets were retrieved from the Greater Taipei Area in 2017 and 110,716 self-reported pollution incidents were extracted from the Public Nuisance Petition system during the same period. The results suggest that complaints collected from phone-based systems and Twitter were found to have correlated with each other spatially, albeit they differ in temporal profiles and by the proportion of pollution categories. Catering businesses and the entertainment activities they attract appear to be the main sources of pollution complaints and can be precisely captured by geotagged tweets. This can serve as a strong predictor for pollution incidents, more than traditional indicators such as population density or industrial activities, as suggested by earlier studies. Social media analytics, with their ability to monitor and analyze online discussions in a timely manner, can be a valuable supplement to existing phone-based pollution monitoring procedures. The methodologies developed in this study have the potential to support the proactive management of urban environmental pollution, in which resources can be prioritized in key areas to further enhance the quality of urban services.

The association between road traffic noise and type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

The association between road traffic noise and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) was inconsistent. To address this, we have synthesized available cohort studies about their association by meta-analysis. PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Scopus databases were searched up to July 2022. The Quality-effect model (QE) was used to incorporate the results of included studies. The possibility of publication bias was assessed by the Doi plots and Luis Furuya-Kanamori index. Sensitivity analyses included leave-one-out meta-analysis, subgroup meta-analysis, and meta-regressions. The Recommendations for Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) guidelines were conducted to evaluate the overall quality of evidence. Eight cohort studies with 4,989,846 participants and 416,799 diabetes cases were included. Based on the fully adjusted models from 8 cohort studies (10 estimates; Lden range ≈ 15-98.5 dB(A)), we found "high" evidence of RR per 10 dB(A) = 1.07 (1.05, 1.10), high heterogeneity (I2 = 0.91%, p < 0.001), and high publication bias (LKF index = 4.55). Sensitivity analyses showed stable model results, and the GRADE assessment suggested the current overall quality of evidence is high. Comprehensive evidence from cohort studies supports that increasing exposure to road traffic noise may be associated with higher risk of T2DM.

Building a City with Low Noise Pollution: Exploring the Mental Health Effect Thresholds of Spatiotemporal Environmental Noise Exposure and Urban Planning Solution

Urban noise pollution and health hazards have become serious social problems and challenges. Noise prevention and control is the most cost-effective health strategy. However, in urban planning and noise control, reliable evidence is still lacking on individual spatiotemporal environmental noise exposure and its mental health effects. This study used real-time noise exposure data and GPS trackers from 142 volunteers aged 18 to 60 years in Guangzhou, and further analyzed the differences in environmental noise exposure and its mental health impact thresholds under individual spatiotemporal behavior. The results showed that the noise exposure of residents under daily activities has obvious differences in time, space and place. Regarding the threshold relationship between noise exposure and mental health, noise exposure at night, work, personal affairs, travel and sleep activities, as well as at home and work had a threshold effect on residents' mental health. Noise thresholds were 60 dB, 60 dB, and about 34 dB at night, during work or at a workplace, and while sleeping, respectively. The optimal sound environment for personal affairs, traveling, and at home was around 50 dB, 55-70 dB, and 45 dB, respectively. The environmental noise exposure assessment and mental health impact threshold analysis based on the spatial and temporal activities of individuals will provide important reference for government management departments in planning and policy formulation.

A hybrid deep leaning model for prediction and parametric sensitivity analysis of noise annoyance

Noise annoyance is recognized as an expression of physiological and psychological strain in acoustical environment. The studies on prediction of noise annoyance and parametric sensitivity analysis of factors affecting it have been rarely reported in India. A hybrid ConvLSTM technique was developed in the study to predict traffic-induced noise annoyance in 484 people based on ambient noise levels, as well as survey information. Ambient noise levels were obtained at different locations of Dhanbad city using sound level meter at varying intervals, viz. 09AM-12PM, 03PM-06PM, and 08PM-11PM. The proposed method was compared with some well-known neural network techniques such as K-nearest neighbors (KNN), artificial neural network (ANN), recurrent neural network (RNN), and long-short-term memory (LSTM). The experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms other techniques and can be a reliable approach for prediction of noise annoyance with an accuracy of 93.8%. It can be concluded from noise maps that the noise levels in all locations of the Dhanbad city were higher than 70 dB(A) and noise sensitivity is the most important input variable of traffic-induced noise annoyance, followed by honking noise, education, exposure hours, L_Aeq, sleeping disorder, and chronic disease. The study shall facilitate in developing a decision support tool for prediction of noise annoyance and promoting implementation of suitable public policy in urban cities.

Urban workers' cardiovascular health due to exposure to traffic-originated PM2.5 and noise pollution in different microenvironments

The cardiovascular health of the people in urbanised cities is linked to traffic air, and noise pollution. This study investigated the cardiovascular health of people working in two microenvironments such as street (vendors) and workplace (office workers) whose blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) might be affected due to regular exposure to PM_2.5 and traffic noise. The PM_2.5 and noise levels measurements, face-to-face questionnaire survey and health check-ups were carried out on working days from 10 A.M. to 8 P.M. in Jan-Dec 2019. The data was analysed by various statistical approaches in which the link between the traffic-borne PM_2.5 and noise level at 1/3rd octave frequencies has been established with the participants' BP and HR considering the demographic, socio-contextual, habitual and annoyance perception factors. The median measure of PM_2.5 and noise levels violated the WHO and NAAQS limits, i.e. 106.67 μg/m³ at street level and 33.33 μg/m³ at office indoor; and 71.35 dB (A) at the street and 65.78 dB (A) at office indoor. The results further showed that the workers working in traffic corridors had abnormally high BP and HR. The systolic BP, diastolic BP and HR values were higher than normal in male workers than female workers. The influence of low noise spectrum (50-630 Hz) was mostly observed. Therefore, the combined effect of PM_2.5 > 50 μg/m³ and noise spectrum (63 and 100 Hz) > 30 dB (A) significantly affect office workers' health in traffic corridors. The hearing aids, breathing troubles in the traffic corridor and annoyance perception also influenced the BP and HR of the respondents. The results are indicative and might be helpful in urban environmental planning to improve the well-being of urban traffic corridor users.

Environmental noise-induced cardiovascular, metabolic and mental health disorders: a brief review

BACKGROUND

Environmental noise is a pervasive pollutant that is one of the greatest environmental threats to mental, physiological and psychological well-being and has a significant global health burden associated with it. Many epidemiological studies indicate long-term relationship of noise pollution with wide range of metabolic, cardio-vascular and respiratory disorders and diseases.

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this study was to thoroughly analyse available literature on public health implications and various underlying biological mechanisms associated with ambient noise exposure, taking into account both objective and subjective measures of noise exposure.

METHODS

A search of literature for review on environmental noise and associated cardiovascular, mental health and metabolic implications on human health was done using Web of Science, Google Scholar and PubMed databases.

DISCUSSION

Experimental studies indicate that noise exposure leads to endocrine effects, increased incidence of diabetes, impairment of cognitive performance, sleep disturbance and annoyance. Epidemiological evidence indicates that high levels of noise, particularly at night, may cause arterial hypertension and endothelial dysfunction due to higher level of stress hormones and oxidative stress. An increased incidence of cardio-vascular diseases like myocardial infarction, heart rate, ischemic heart disease, stroke and heart failure is associated with noise-induced mental stress. Furthermore, psychological and mental health issues like anxiety and depression are also related with exposure to noise pollution.

CONCLUSION

This article summarises a comprehensive and systematic knowledge established in recent noise research with the spotlight on cardiovascular, metabolic and mental health disorders of environmental noise, providing unique understanding into underlying mechanisms.

Bidirectional associations between sleep problems and behavioural difficulties and health-related quality of life in adolescents: Evidence from the SCAMP longitudinal cohort study

Background

Sleep problems show associations with negative outcomes in both physical and mental health in adolescents, but the associations may be reciprocal. We aimed to assess bidirectional associations between sleep problems and mental health symptoms including behavioural difficulties (internalising and externalising difficulties) and low health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Methods

A total of 6616 adolescents (52.4% females) across Greater London completed baseline assessments when they were aged 11-12 years, and 3803 of them (57.2% females) completed follow-up assessments at aged 13-15 years. Weekday and weekend sleep duration were derived from self-reported bedtime, sleep onset latency and wake time. Sleep disturbance was assessed using a standardized sleep disturbance scale. Internalising and externalising difficulties were assessed using subscales of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire. HRQoL was assessed using the KIDSCREEN-10 questionnaire. Cross-lagged structural equation modelling was used with multiple imputation to examine bidirectional associations between sleep problems and mental health symptoms.

Results

Females had greater internalising difficulties, worse HRQoL and more sleep disturbance than males. Persistent insufficient weekday and weekend sleep, and sleep disturbance (i.e., at both baseline and follow-up) were associated with internalising and externalising difficulties and low HRQoL at follow-up (ORs ranged from 1.53 to 3.63). Persistent externalising difficulties and low HRQoL were also associated with insufficient weekend sleep and sleep disturbance at follow-up (ORs ranged from 1.68 to 4.25). Using continuous variables, we found bidirectional associations between weekday sleep duration and HRQoL, weekend sleep duration and externalising score, sleep quality and internalising score, and sleep quality and HRQoL. The association magnitudes were mostly similar in the two directions.

Conclusions

Our study showed bidirectional associations between sleep problems and mental health symptoms during adolescence, indicating that early intervention and treatment on the first-occurring symptom may prevent the development of subsequent problems.

Environmental Noise and Effects on Sleep: An Update to the WHO Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND

Nighttime noise carries a significant disease burden. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published guidelines for the regulation of environmental noise based on a review of evidence published up to the year 2015 on the effects of environmental noise on sleep.

OBJECTIVES

This systematic review and meta-analysis will update the WHO evidence review on the effects of environmental noise on sleep disturbance to include more recent studies.

METHODS

Investigations of self-reported sleep among residents exposed to environmental traffic noise at home were identified using Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO. Awakenings, falling asleep, and sleep disturbance were the three outcomes included. Extracted data were used to derive exposure-response relationships for the probability of being highly sleep disturbed by nighttime noise [average outdoor A-weighted noise level (Lnight) 2300-0700 hours] for aircraft, road, and rail traffic noise, individually. The overall quality of evidence was assessed using Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) criteria.

RESULTS

Eleven studies (n=109,070 responses) were included in addition to 25 studies (n=64,090 responses) from the original WHO analysis. When sleep disturbance questions specifically mentioned noise as the source of disturbance, there was moderate quality of evidence for the probability of being highly sleep disturbed per 10-dB increase in Lnight for aircraft [odds ratio (OR)=2.18; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.01, 2.36], road (OR=2.52; 95% CI: 2.28, 2.79), and railway (OR=2.97; 95% CI: 2.57, 3.43) noise. When noise was not mentioned, there was low to very low quality of evidence for being sleep disturbed per 10-dB increase in Lnight for aircraft (OR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.20, 1.93), road (OR=1.14; 95% CI: 1.08, 1.21), and railway (OR=1.17; 95% CI: 0.91, 1.49) noise. Compared with the original WHO review, the exposure-response relationships closely agreed at low (40 dB Lnight) levels for all traffic types but indicated greater disturbance by aircraft traffic at high noise levels. Sleep disturbance was not significantly different between European and non-European studies.

DISCUSSION

Available evidence suggests that transportation noise is negatively associated with self-reported sleep. Sleep disturbance in this updated meta-analysis was comparable to the original WHO review at low nighttime noise levels. These low levels correspond to the recent WHO noise limit recommendations for nighttime noise, and so these findings do not suggest these WHO recommendations need revisiting. Deviations from the WHO review in this updated analysis suggest that populations exposed to high levels of aircraft noise may be at greater risk of sleep disturbance than determined previously. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP10197.

A study on road traffic noise exposure and prevalence of insomnia

The potential of the nocturnal traffic noise to affect the quality and the quantity of sleep makes it a serious threat to public health. The present study is an attempt to provide insights into the ways through which nocturnal traffic noise causes insomnia. A total of 4525 respondents participated in the study. Modelled nocturnal noise levels were used, and the assessment of insomnia-related symptoms was done using the Jenkins sleep problem scale. A directed acyclic graph was used to obtain the minimum set of confounders that need to be adjusted for obtaining unbiased estimates. DASS-21 item scale was used to evaluate the mental health of respondents. The study reported significant associations between traffic noise exposure and all insomnia-related symptoms. For the total study population, the highest risk occurred for difficulty in falling asleep symptom (OR = 1.45; 95% CI = 1.01 - 2.07). Based on the sensitivity analysis, respondents with bedrooms facing the road were found to have higher risks as compared to the overall sample with the highest risks occurring for difficulty in maintaining the sleep symptom (OR = 1.65; 95% CI = 1.08 - 2.51). Severity levels of mental disorders showed an increasing trend with the increasing noise levels. Females were found to have a higher risk as compared to males (OR = 1.75; 95% CI = 1.14 - 2.69). No significant association was found between traffic noise exposure and sleep medication usage. Future research on large populations can help in minimizing the impacts of nocturnal noise on public health.

Objective sleep assessments for healthy people in environmental research: A literature review

To date, although many studies had focused on the impact of environmental factors on sleep, how to choose the proper assessment method for objective sleep quality was often ignored, especially for healthy subjects in bedroom environment. In order to provide methodological guidance for future research, this paper reviewed the assessments of objective sleep quality applied in environmental researches, compared them from the perspective of accuracy and interference, and statistically analyzed the impact of experimental type and subjects' information on method selection. The review results showed that, in contrast to polysomnography (PSG), the accuracy of actigraphy (ACT), respiratory monitoring-oxygen saturation monitoring (RM-OSM), and electrocardiograph (ECG) could reach up to 97%, 80.38%, and 79.95%, respectively. In terms of sleep staging, PSG and ECG performed the best, ACT the second, and RM-OSM the worst; as compared to single methods, mix methods were more accurate and better at sleep staging. PSG interfered with sleep a great deal, while ECG and ACT could be non-contact, and thus, the least interference with sleep was present. The type of experiment significantly influenced the choice of assessment method (p < 0.001), 85.3% of researchers chose PSG in laboratory study while 82.5% ACT in field study; moreover, PSG was often used in a relatively small number of young subjects, while ACT had a wide applicable population. In general, researchers need to pay more attention at selection of assessments in future studies, and this review can be used as a reliable reference for experimental design.

Nachtlärminduzierte Schlafstörungen und Herz-Kreislauf-Risiko

Beeinträchtigungen des Schlafes im Sinne von Insomnien, d. h. Ein- und Durchschlafschwierigkeiten, frühmorgendliches Erwachen und ein chronisch unerholsamer Schlaf, sind weit verbreitet in der Bevölkerung und gehen mit einer Vielzahl von körperlichen und psychischen Gesundheitsstörungen einher. Die umweltbedingten Ursachen für Schlafstörungen umfassen eine ganze Reihe von Faktoren, wobei nächtlicher Lärm als eine wichtige Ursache gilt. Aktuelle Daten der Europäischen Umweltagentur zeigen, dass Umgebungslärm (Straßenverkehrs-, Schienen-, Flug- und Industrielärm) für starke Schlafstörungen bei 6,5 Millionen Personen in Europa sorgt. Neue epidemiologische und mechanistische Feldstudien zeigen, dass vor allem nächtlicher Verkehrslärm unter anderem zu einer eingeschränkten Gefäßfunktion, thromboinflammatorischen Veränderungen, einem Anstieg von Stresshormonen und einem erhöhten Blutdruck führen kann, die bedeutsame Risikofaktoren für Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen darstellen. Gemäß der Europäischen Umweltagentur führt der Umgebungslärm jährlich zu 48000 zusätzlichen Fällen von ischämischen Herzerkrankungen sowie 12000 vorzeitigen Todesfällen.

Environmental factors affecting sleep quality in summer: a field study in Shanghai, China

Although the environment can greatly influence an individual's sleep quality, China is yet to conduct comprehensive research on the topic. This study investigated the bedroom environment and sleep quality of 41 households during summer in Shanghai. Bedroom environments were comprehensively evaluated through environmental perception questionnaires filled by participants after waking up every morning. Parameters, such as air temperature, relative humidity, CO₂ concentration, and noise level were continuously monitored. Furthermore, participants' sleep quality was observed using both subjective questionnaires and physiological measures. Environmental measurements showed that the most comfortable air temperature and relative humidity was 24.8 °C and 64%, respectively. Physiological measurements showed that the average duration of slow wave sleep (SWS) and sleep efficiency (SE) was 73.8 min and 86.7%, respectively. Additionally, SWS was negatively correlated with air temperature (r = -0.377, p = 0.015) and CO₂ concentration (r = -0.362, p = 0.02), and SE was negatively correlated with noise level (r = -0.32, p = 0.042). The subjective and objective results consistently indicated that higher air temperature, CO₂ concentration, and noise level leads to poor sleep quality in summer. In addition, air temperature and CO₂ concentration had a greater impact on the sleep quality of males, while noise level had a greater impact on the sleep quality of females.

Land use regression modelling of community noise in São Paulo, Brazil

Noise pollution has negative health consequences, which becomes increasingly relevant with rapid urbanization. In low- and middle-income countries research on health effects of noise is hampered by scarce exposure data and noise maps. In this study, we developed land use regression (LUR) models to assess spatial variability of community noise in the Western Region of São Paulo, Brazil.We measured outdoor noise levels continuously at 42 homes once or twice for one week in the summer and the winter season. These measurements were integrated with various geographic information system variables to develop LUR models for predicting average A-weighted (dB(A)) day-evening-night equivalent sound levels (L_den) and night sound levels (L_night). A supervised mixed linear regression analysis was conducted to test potential noise predictors for various buffer sizes and distances between home and noise source. Noise exposure levels in the study area were high with a site average L_den of 69.3 dB(A) ranging from 60.3 to 82.3 dB(A), and a site average L_night of 59.9 dB(A) ranging from 50.7 to 76.6 dB(A). LUR models had a good fit with a R² of 0.56 for L_den and 0.63 for L_night in a leave-one-site-out cross validation. Main predictors of noise were the inverse distance to medium roads, count of educational facilities within a 400 m buffer, mean Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) within a 100 m buffer, residential areas within a 50 m (L_den) or 25 m (L_night) buffer and slum areas within a 400 m buffer. Our study suggests that LUR modelling with geographic predictor data is a promising and efficient approach for noise exposure assessment in low- and middle-income countries, where noise maps are not available.

Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and road traffic noise and asthma incidence in adults: The Danish Nurse cohort

BACKGROUND

Ambient air pollution is likely a risk factor for asthma, and recent evidence suggests the possible relevance of road traffic noise.

OBJECTIVES

We examined the associations of long-term exposure to air pollution and road traffic noise with adult-asthma incidence.

METHODS

We followed 28,731 female nurses (age > 44 years) from the Danish Nurse Cohort, recruited in 1993 and 1999, for first hospital contact for asthma from 1977 until 2015. We estimated residential annual mean concentrations of particulate matter with diameter < 2.5 µm (PM_2.5) since 1990 and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) since 1970 with the Danish DEHM/UBM/AirGIS modeling system, and road traffic noise (L_den) since 1970 with the Nord2000 model. Time-varying Cox regression models were used to associate air pollution and road traffic noise exposure with asthma incidence.

RESULTS

During 18.6 years' mean follow-up, 528 out of 23,093 participants had hospital contact for asthma. The hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals for asthma incidence associated with 3-year moving average exposures were 1.29 (1.03, 1.61) per 6.3 µg/m³ for PM_2.5, 1.16 (1.07, 1.27) per 8.2 µg/m³ for NO₂, and 1.12 (1.00, 1.25) per 10 dB for L_den. The HR for NO₂ remained unchanged after adjustment for either PM_2.5 or L_den, while the HRs for PM_2.5 and L_den attenuated to unity after adjustment for NO₂.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term exposure to air pollution was associated with adult-asthma incidence independently of road traffic noise, with NO₂ most relevant. Road traffic noise was not independently associated with adult-asthma incidence.

Application of Machine Learning to Include Honking Effect in Vehicular Traffic Noise Prediction

A vehicular road traffic noise prediction methodology based on machine learning techniques has been presented. The road traffic parameters that have been considered are traffic volume, percentage of heavy vehicles, honking occurrences and the equivalent continuous sound pressure level. Leq A method to include the honking effect in the traffic noise prediction has been illustrated. The techniques that have been used for the prediction of traffic noise are decision trees, random forests, generalized linear models and artificial neural networks. The results obtained by using these methods have been compared on the basis of mean square error, correlation coefficient, coefficient of determination and accuracy. It has been observed that honking is an important parameter and contributes to the overall traffic noise, especially in congested Indian road traffic conditions. The effects of honking noise on the human health cannot be ignored and it should be included as a parameter in the future traffic noise prediction models.

The impact of nocturnal road traffic noise, bedroom window orientation, and work-related stress on subjective sleep quality: results of a cross-sectional study among working women

Objective

To examine the effect of work-related stress and road noise exposure on self-rated sleep and potential additive interaction effects.

Methods

Sleep and predictor variables were surveyed within two subsamples with 2191 and 1764 working women in a cross-sectional study. Sleep was assessed using a single question on general sleep quality and four questions on specific sleep problems and subsequently dichotomized (poor sleep vs. no poor sleep). Work-related stress was operationalized by job strain and effort-reward imbalance. Nocturnal exposure to road traffic noise was assessed as (a) the orientation of the bedroom window to a quiet façade vs. a low-, medium- or high-trafficked street and (b) energy-equivalent sound pressure levels for night-time modelled at the most exposed façade (L_night). We distinguished between low (< 45 dB(A)), medium (45–50 dB(A)) and high exposure (> 50 dB(A)).

Results

Poor sleep was associated with job strain and effort-reward imbalance. The prevalence of poor sleep did not increase with increasing L_night, but bedroom window orientation showed a non-significant trend. A quiet façade had a protective effect on sleep in each L_night category. We found a non-significant trend for an additive interaction between bedroom window orientation and job strain.

Conclusion

Noise levels modelled for the most exposed façade likely overestimate the actual exposure and thus may not be a precise predictor of poor sleep. Bedroom window orientation seems more relevant. Potential additive interaction effects between bedroom window orientation and job strain should be considered when interpreting epidemiological study results on noise-induced sleep disturbances.

Noise sensitivity associated with nonrestorative sleep in Chinese adults: a cross-sectional study

Background

Nonrestorative sleep is a common sleep disorder with a prevalence ranging from 1.4 to 35%, and is associated with various psychological and physical health issues. Noise exposure and noise sensitivity have been proposed to contribute to nonrestorative sleep. This study aimed to examine the relationships among noise, noise sensitivity, nonrestorative sleep, and physiological sleep parameters in Chinese adults.

Methods

A cross-sectional household survey was conducted with randomly selected Chinese adults based on a frame stratified by geographical districts and types of quarters in Hong Kong. We administered a battery of questionnaires, including the Nonrestorative Sleep Scale, the Weinstein Noise Sensitivity Scale, the ENRICHD Social Support Instrument, the Patient Health Questionnaire, and the Perceived Stress Scale to assess nonrestorative sleep, noise sensitivity, social support, somatic symptoms and stress, respectively. Anxiety and depression were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale while sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics were assessed with an investigator-developed sheet. Nocturnal noise level and physiological sleep parameters were measured during nighttime for a week by noise dosimetry and actigraphy, respectively. A structured multiphase linear regression was conducted to estimate associations.

Results

A total of 500 adults (66.4% female) with an average age of 39 years completed this study. Bivariate regressions showed that age, marital status, occupation, family income, season, exercise, cola and soda consumption, social support, somatic symptoms, stress, depression, noise sensitivity, total sleep time, and awakenings were associated with nonrestorative sleep. In the multivariable analysis, family income, season, exercise, social support, somatic symptoms, stress, and depression remained associated with nonrestorative sleep. Specifically, a one-unit increase of noise sensitivity was associated with 0.08 increase in nonrestorative sleep (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.01, 0.15, p = 0.023). Nocturnal noise was negatively associated with time in bed (b = − 1.65, 95% CI: − 2.77, − 0.52, p = 0.004), total sleep time (b = − 1.61, 95% CI: − 2.59, − 0.62, p = 0.001), and awakenings (b = − 0.16, 95% CI: − 0.30, − 0.03, p = 0.018), but was not associated with nonrestorative sleep.

Conclusions

Nonrestorative sleep was predicted by noise sensitivity in addition to family income, season, exercise, social support, somatic symptoms, stress, and depression.

Occupational Noise Exposure and Diabetes Risk

Introduction

Noise is one of the most common worldwide environmental pollutants, especially in occupational fields. As a stressor, it affects not only the ear but also the entire body. Its physiological and psychological impacts have been well established in many conditions such as cardiovascular diseases. However, there is a dearth of evidence regarding diabetes risk related to noises.

Aim

To evaluate the relationship between occupational exposure to noise and the risk of developing diabetes.

Methods

This is a cross-sectional analytical study enrolling two groups of 151 workers each. The first group (noise exposed group: EG) included the employees of a Tunisian power plant, who worked during the day shift and had a permanent position. The second group (unexposed to noise group: NEG) included workers assigned to two academic institutions, who were randomly selected in the Occupational Medicine Department of the Farhat Hached University Hospital in Sousse, during periodical fitness to work visits. Both populations (exposed and unexposed) were matched by age and gender. Data collection was based on a preestablished questionnaire, a physical examination, a biological assessment, and a sonometric study.

Results

The mean equivalent continuous sound level was 89 dB for the EG and 44.6 dB for the NEG. Diabetes was diagnosed in 24 workers from EG (15.9%) and 14 workers from NEG (9.3%), with no statistically significant difference (p=0.08). After multiple binary logistic regression, including variables of interest, noise did not appear to be associated with diabetes.

Conclusion

Our results did not reveal a higher risk of developing diabetes in workers exposed to noise. Further studies assessing both level and duration of noise exposure are needed before any definitive conclusion.

A Review on Acoustic and Skid Resistance Solutions for Road Pavements

As cities grow in size, traffic also increases, thus making the population more exposed to road noise and traffic accidents. It is therefore important to study and understand which properties of the pavement influence its acoustic impact and skid resistance performance. The pavement texture plays a major role in generating noise and friction, and it can be engineered in order to control both of them at the same time. The phenomena regulating skid resistance are well understood today. The same applies for noise generation and propagation; the literature contains methods of designing the pavement surface layer to achieve consistent results. Several types of solutions can be found for asphalt mixtures, most of them derived from decades of studies and research. They use different approaches to be effective for noise and friction, but all have in common the control of the surface’s macro and microtexture. Finally, some considerations are made regarding novel paving solutions with artificial aggregates instead of natural ones to address noise and skid resistance.

Association between perceived environmental pollution and poor sleep quality: results from nationwide general population sample of 162,797 people

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND

Perceived environmental pollution may play a significant role in understanding environmentally induced health-related symptoms. This study aimed to determine whether perceived environmental pollution is associated with poor sleep quality.

METHODS

We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from a nationwide sample of 162,797 individuals aged ≥19 years from the 2018 Korea Community Health Survey. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used for assessing sleep quality. Five types of perceived environmental pollutants involving air, water, soil, noise, and green space were assessed. We investigate the association between perceived environmental pollution and poor sleep quality. We also investigated whether an increasing number of perceived environmental pollutants magnified the odds of poor sleep quality.

RESULTS

The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 42.7% (n = 69,554), and 15.6%, 10.1%, 11.9%, 23.0%, and 11.5% reported perceived environmental pollution concerning air, water, soil, noise, and green space, respectively. A perception of air, soil, or noise pollution was significantly associated with poor sleep quality. In addition, those perceiving a greater number of environmental pollutants had significantly higher odds of poor sleep quality. Notably, this association was magnified in individuals living in rural areas.

CONCLUSIONS

Perceived environmental pollution was significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Our results suggest that a more comprehensive exposure to environmental pollution may not only have a worse effect on health outcomes including sleep quality.

Updated Review of the Acoustic Modulation of Sleep: Current Perspectives and Emerging Concepts

With growing interest in the use of acoustic stimuli in sleep research and acoustic interventions used therapeutically for sleep enhancement, there is a need for an overview of the current lines of research. This paper summarizes the various ways to use acoustic input before sleep or stimulation during sleep. It thereby focuses on the respective methodological requirements, advantages, disadvantages, potentials and difficulties of acoustic sleep modulation. It highlights differences in subjective and objective outcome measures, immediate and whole night effects and short versus long term effects. This recognizes the fact that not all outcome parameters are relevant in every research field. The same applies to conclusions drawn from other outcome dimensions, consideration of mediating factors, levels of stimulation processing and the impact of inter-individual differences. In addition to the deliberate influences of acoustic input on sleep, one paragraph describes adverse environmental acoustic influences. Finally, the possibilities for clinical and basic research-related applications are discussed, and emerging opportunities are presented. This overview is not a systematic review but aims to present the current perspective and hence summarizes the most up-to-date research results and reviews. This is the first review providing a summary of the broad spectrum of possibilities to acoustically influence sleep.

Urban noise restricts, fragments, and lightens sleep in Australian magpies

Urban areas are inherently noisy, and this noise can disrupt biological processes as diverse as communication, migration, and reproduction. We investigated how exposure to urban noise affects sleep, a process critical to optimal biological functioning, in Australian magpies (Cracticus tibicen). Eight magpies experimentally exposed to noise in captivity for 24-h spent more time awake, and less time in non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) and REM sleep at night than under quiet conditions. Sleep was also fragmented, with more frequent interruptions by wakefulness, shorter sleep episode durations, and less intense non-REM sleep. REM sleep was particularly sensitive to urban noise. Following exposure to noise, magpies recovered lost sleep by engaging in more, and more intense, non-REM sleep. In contrast, REM sleep showed no rebound. This might indicate a long-term cost to REM sleep loss mediated by noise, or contest hypotheses regarding the functional value of this state. Overall, urban noise has extensive, disruptive impacts on sleep composition, architecture, and intensity in magpies. Future work should consider whether noise-induced sleep restriction and fragmentation have long-term consequences.

Traffic Noise and Mental Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Recent evidence suggests that traffic noise may negatively impact mental health. However, existing systematic reviews provide an incomplete overview of the effects of all traffic noise sources on mental health. We conducted a systematic literature search and summarized the evidence for road, railway, or aircraft noise-related risks of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and dementia among adults. We included 31 studies (26 on depression and/or anxiety disorders, 5 on dementia). The meta-analysis of five aircraft noise studies found that depression risk increased significantly by 12% per 10 dB L_DEN (Effect Size = 1.12, 95% CI 1.02–1.23). The meta-analyses of road (11 studies) and railway traffic noise (3 studies) indicated 2–3% (not statistically significant) increases in depression risk per 10 dB L_DEN. Results for road traffic noise related anxiety were similar. We did not find enough studies to meta-analyze anxiety and railway or aircraft noise, and dementia/ cognitive impairment and any traffic noise. In conclusion, aircraft noise exposure increases the risk for depression. Otherwise, we did not detect statistically significant risk increases due to road and railway traffic noise or for anxiety. More research on the association of cognitive disorders and traffic noise is required. Public policies to reduce environmental traffic noise might not only increase wellness (by reducing noise-induced annoyance), but might contribute to the prevention of depression and anxiety disorders.

Adverse Cardiovascular Effects of Traffic Noise with a Focus on Nighttime Noise and the New WHO Noise Guidelines

Exposure to traffic noise is associated with stress and sleep disturbances. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently concluded that road traffic noise increases the risk for ischemic heart disease and potentially other cardiometabolic diseases, including stroke, obesity, and diabetes. The WHO report focused on whole-day noise exposure, but new epidemiological and translational field noise studies indicate that nighttime noise, in particular,is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) through increased levels of stress hormones and vascular oxidative stress, leading to endothelial dysfunction and subsequent development of various CVDs. Novel experimental studies found noise to be associated with oxidative stress-induced vascular and brain damage, mediated by activation of the NADPH oxidase, uncoupling of endothelial and neuronal nitric oxide synthase, and vascular/brain infiltration with inflammatory cells. Noise-induced pathophysiology was more pronounced in response to nighttime as compared with daytime noise. This review focuses on the consequences of nighttime noise.

Physical and Social Environment Relationship With Sleep Health and Disorders

Sleep health is a multidimensional construct that includes adequate duration, quality, and appropriately timed sleep that may be influenced by environmental factors. In this review, we focus on how an individual's living and sleeping environment, both the surrounding neighborhood physical and social features and the atmosphere around them, may impact their sleep health. We explore the associations of the physical environment (urban density, recreational facilities, green space, mixed land use, and healthy food stores), neighborhood deprivation (disadvantage and disorder), and the social environment (social cohesion, safety, and stigma) with sleep in both adult and pediatric populations. We investigate how physical and social environmental features may lead to alterations in the timing, duration, and quality of sleep and contribute to the most prevalent sleep disorders: insomnia, sleep apnea, and circadian rhythm disorders. We also review how ambient factors such as artificial light, environmental noise, and air pollution may contribute to sleep pathology. We have included key studies and recent emerging data regarding how the differential distribution of environmental factors that may affect sleep health may contribute to sleep health disparities.

Associations of Various Nighttime Noise Exposure Indicators with Objective Sleep Efficiency and Self-Reported Sleep Quality: A Field Study

It is unclear which noise exposure time window and noise characteristics during nighttime are most detrimental for sleep quality in real-life settings. We conducted a field study with 105 volunteers wearing a wrist actimeter to record their sleep during seven days, together with concurrent outdoor noise measurements at their bedroom window. Actimetry-recorded sleep latency increased by 5.6 min (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.6 to 9.6 min) per 10 dB(A) increase in noise exposure during the first hour after bedtime. Actimetry-assessed sleep efficiency was significantly reduced by 2%-3% per 10 dB(A) increase in measured outdoor noise (Leq, 1h) for the last three hours of sleep. For self-reported sleepiness, noise exposure during the last hour prior to wake-up was most crucial, with an increase in the sleepiness score of 0.31 units (95% CI: 0.08 to 0.54) per 10 dB(A) Leq,1h. Associations for estimated indoor noise were not more pronounced than for outdoor noise. Taking noise events into consideration in addition to equivalent sound pressure levels (Leq) only marginally improved the statistical models. Our study provides evidence that matching the nighttime noise exposure time window to the individual's diurnal sleep-wake pattern results in a better estimate of detrimental nighttime noise effects on sleep. We found that noise exposure at the beginning and the end of the sleep is most crucial for sleep quality.

Aircraft Noise Exposure and Subjective Sleep Quality: The Results of the DEBATS Study in France

Background: Exposure to aircraft noise has been shown to have adverse effects on health, particularly on sleep. Exposure to nighttime aircraft noise clearly affects sleep architecture, as well as subjective sleep quality. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between aircraft noise exposure and subjective sleep quality in the population living near airports in France. Methods: A total of 1,244 individuals older than 18 and living near three French airports (Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, and Toulouse-Blagnac) were randomly selected to participate in the study. Information on sleep as well as health, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors was collected by means of a face-to-face questionnaire performed at their place of residence by an interviewer. For each participant, aircraft noise exposure was estimated at home using noise maps. Logistic regression models were used with adjustment for potential confounders. Results: Aircraft noise exposure was significantly associated with a short total sleep time (TST; ≤ 6 h) and with the feeling of tiredness while awakening in the morning. An increase of 10 dB(A) in aircraft noise level at night was associated with an OR of 1.63 (95% CI: 1.15-2.32) for a short TST and an OR of 1.23 (95% CI: 1.00-1.54) for the feeling of tiredness while awakening in the morning. Conclusions: These findings contribute to the overall evidence suggesting that aircraft noise exposure at nighttime may decrease the subjective amount and quality of sleep.

Impacts of Subchronic, High-Level Noise Exposure on Sleep and Metabolic Parameters: A Juvenile Rodent Model

BACKGROUND

Noise is an environmental factor that has been associated with metabolic and sleep disorders. Sleep is a vital function, since it underpins physiologic processes and cognitive recovery and development. However, the effects of chronic noise exposure on the developing organism are still subject to debate.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the present study was to assess the effects of subchronic, high-level noise exposure on sleep, apnea, and homeostasis in juvenile rats.

METHODS

Twenty-four 3-wk-old male Wistar rats were exposed to noise [[Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]] for 5 wk and 2 d during the 12-h rest period. Data on sleep stages, food and water intake, apnea, and body and organ weight were recorded.

RESULTS

Five weeks of high-level noise exposure were associated with hyperphagia ([Formula: see text]), body weight gain ([Formula: see text]), a heavier thymus ([Formula: see text]), and heavier adrenal glands ([Formula: see text]). A sleep analysis highlighted microstructural differences in the active period: in particular, the mean daily amount of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep as a proportion of total sleep time (TST) was higher. The mean daily amount of non-REM (NREM) sleep was lower in the exposed group, meaning that the intergroup difference in the TST was not significant. During a 1-h, noise-free plethysmographic recording during the rest period, the mean total amount of active wakefulness (AW) was lower in the exposed group (by 9.1 min), whereas the mean duration of an episode of REM sleep was higher (by 1.8 min), and the TST was higher (by 10.7 min).

DISCUSSION

Subchronic exposure of juvenile rats to high-intensity noise during the rest period was associated with some small but significant sleep disturbances, greater food and water intakes, greater body weight gain, and greater thymus and adrenal gland weights. The main effects of noise exposure on sleep were also observed in the 1-h plethysmography session after 5 wk of exposure. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP4045.

Comparing the Effects of Road, Railway, and Aircraft Noise on Sleep: Exposure⁻Response Relationships from Pooled Data of Three Laboratory Studies

Objectives: Air, road, and railway traffic, the three major sources of traffic noise, have been reported to differently impact on annoyance. However, these findings may not be transferable to physiological reactions during sleep which are considered to decrease nighttime recovery and might mediate long-term negative health effects. Studies on awakenings from sleep indicate that railway noise, while having the least impact on annoyance, may have the most disturbing properties on sleep compared to aircraft noise. This study presents a comparison between the three major traffic modes and their probability to cause awakenings. In combining acoustical and polysomnographical data from three laboratory studies sample size and generalizability of the findings were increased. Methods: Data from three laboratory studies were pooled, conducted at two sites in Germany (German Aerospace Center, Cologne, and Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors, Dortmund). In total, the impact of 109,836 noise events on polysomnographically assessed awakenings was analyzed in 237 subjects using a random intercept logistic regression model. Results: The best model fit according to the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) included different acoustical and sleep parameters. After adjusting for these moderators results showed that the probability to wake up from equal maximum A-weighted sound pressure levels (SPL) increased in the order aircraft < road < railway noise, the awakening probability from road and railway noise being not significantly different (p = 0.988). At 70 dB SPL, it was more than 7% less probable to wake up due to aircraft noise than due to railway noise. Conclusions: The three major traffic noise sources differ in their impact on sleep. The order with which their impact increased was inversed compared to the order that was found in annoyance surveys. It is thus important to choose the correct concept for noise legislation, i.e., physiological sleep metrics in addition to noise annoyance for nighttime noise protection.

Impact of Long-Term Exposure to Wind Turbine Noise on Redemption of Sleep Medication and Antidepressants: A Nationwide Cohort Study

BACKGROUND

Noise from wind turbines (WTs) is associated with annoyance and, potentially, sleep disturbances.

OBJECTIVES

Our objective was to investigate whether long-term WT noise (WTN) exposure is associated with the redemption of prescriptions for sleep medication and antidepressants.

METHODS

For all Danish dwellings within a radius of [Formula: see text] heights and for 25% of randomly selected dwellings within a radius of [Formula: see text] heights, we estimated nighttime outdoor and low-frequency (LF) indoor WTN, using information on WT type and simulated hourly wind. During follow-up from 1996 to 2013, 68,696 adults redeemed sleep medication and 82,373 redeemed antidepressants, from eligible populations of 583,968 and 584,891, respectively. We used Poisson regression with adjustment for individual and area-level covariates.

RESULTS

Five-year mean outdoor nighttime WTN of [Formula: see text] was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) = 1.14 [95% confidence interval (CI]: 0.98, 1.33) for sleep medication and HR = 1.17 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.35) for antidepressants (compared with exposure to WTN of [Formula: see text]). We found no overall association with indoor nighttime LF WTN. In age-stratified analyses, the association with outdoor nighttime WTN was strongest among persons [Formula: see text] of age, with HRs (95% CIs) for the highest exposure group ([Formula: see text]) of 1.68 (1.27, 2.21) for sleep medication and 1.23 (0.90, 1.69) for antidepressants. For indoor nighttime LF WTN, the HRs (95% CIs) among persons [Formula: see text] of age exposed to [Formula: see text] were 1.37 (0.81, 2.31) for sleep medication and 1.34 (0.80, 2.22) for antidepressants.

CONCLUSIONS

We observed high levels of outdoor WTN to be associated with redemption of sleep medication and antidepressants among the elderly, suggesting that WTN may potentially be associated with sleep and mental health. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP3909.

Evaluation of the Criteria for Selecting Proposed Variants of Utility Functions in the Adaptation of Historic Regional Architecture

In this article, the authors propose ways to evaluate the criteria for the considered variants of utility functions in the adaptation of historic regional architecture. The proposed set of assessment criteria (thermo-modernisation criteria, comfort of use, financial considerations, criteria of social benefits, and protection of cultural heritage) emphasises the multidimensional character of the problem of choosing a new function for a historic building. Some of the criteria are measurable while others are difficult to measure, which requires an expert approach to their assessment. The evaluation of the criteria was performed on the example of the historic building ‘Stara Polana’ located in Zakopane. The benchmark for the analysis was the existing condition of the ‘Stara Polana’ building, which is used as a hostel. The authors conducted a series of interdisciplinary studies specifying the potential of the new utility functions considered for the object in the context of the proposed criteria. The evaluation of individual criteria developed in this article is based on the multi-criteria analysis to be performed in the future and support the selection of a new function for the building in question.

Impact of Adolescents' Screen Time and Nocturnal Mobile Phone-Related Awakenings on Sleep and General Health Symptoms: A Prospective Cohort Study

Nocturnal media use has been linked to adolescents' sleeping problems in cross-sectional studies which do not address reverse causality. To prospectively assess the new occurrence of sleep problems or health symptoms in relation to electronic media use and nocturnal mobile phone use, we used data from the longitudinal Swiss HERMES (Health Effects Related to Mobile phone usE in adolescentS) cohort on 843 children from 7th to 9th grade. Logistic regression models were fitted and adjusted for relevant confounders. Adolescents reporting at baseline and follow-up at least one nocturnal awakenings from their own mobile phone per month were more likely to have developed restless sleep (Odds Ratio (OR): 5.66, 95% Confidence Interval: 2.24⁻14.26) and problems falling asleep (3.51, 1.05⁻11.74) within one year compared to adolescents without nocturnal awakenings. A similar pattern was observed for developing symptoms, although somewhat less pronounced in terms of the magnitude of the odds ratios. With respect to high screen time at baseline and follow-up, associations were observed for falling asleep (2.41, 1.41⁻4.13), exhaustibility (1.76, 1.02⁻3.03), lack of energy (1.76, 1.04⁻2.96) and lack of concentration (2.90, 1.55⁻5.42). Our results suggest a detrimental effect of screen time and mobile phone-related awakenings on sleep problems and related health symptoms. However, the results should be interpreted cautiously with respect to adolescents' natural changes in circadian rhythm, which may coincidence with an increase in mobile phone and media use.

Temporal and spatial stratification for the estimation of nocturnal long-term noise levels

Noise pollution in cities is mainly caused by the vehicular traffic but, depending on the place under assessment, it could be affected by the land use. For noise assessment and strategic noise mapping, the night period equivalent level (L_night), which evaluates sleep disturbance, is one of the requirements of the European Directive 2002/49/EC to be presented for the equivalent time of one year. This research aims to find the influence of the land use in the weekdays stratification to improve the accuracy of the long-term noise level estimation for the night period. It is found that depending on the land use of the place under assessment, the weekdays temporal and spatial stratification could be affected by leisure activities. From a statistical analysis based on a clustering procedure of L_night samples in 19 points, it is observed that both, temporal and spatial stratification depend on the intensity of the surrounding leisure activity, and not on traffic. Following these stratification criteria, a sampling method is presented that reduces by 47% the number of days needed to estimate the annual levels with respect to random sampling.

Do Sleep and Psychological Distress Mediate the Association Between Neighborhood Factors and Pain?

OBJECTIVE

Pain affects millions of American adults. However, individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged groups experience higher rates of pain, and individuals from racial/ethnic minorities report greater pain severity and pain-related disability. Some studies find an association between neighborhood socioeconomic status and pain. The present study aimed to further understand the association between neighborhood disadvantage and pain, including the role of objective (e.g., crime rates) and subjective neighborhood characteristics (e.g., perceived safety, neighborhood satisfaction), and to examine sleep and psychological distress as potential mediators of these associations.

METHODS

The sample included 820 participants from two predominantly African American socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Trained data collectors interviewed participants on a number of self-report measures, and objective neighborhood characteristics were obtained from city crime data and street segment audits.

RESULTS

Subjective characteristics, specifically perceived infrastructure and perceived safety, were associated with pain. Based on bootstrapped regression models, sleep efficiency and psychological distress were tested as mediators of the association between these neighborhood factors and pain. Results of mediation testing indicated that psychological distress served as a significant mediator. Though sleep efficiency was not a mediator, it had a significant independent association with pain.

CONCLUSIONS

Understanding the contribution of sleep problems and psychological distress to pain among at-risk individuals living in disadvantaged neighborhoods is important to identifying ways that individual- and neighborhood-level interventions may be leveraged to reduce pain-related disparities.

Adverse impact of nocturnal transportation noise on glucose regulation in healthy young adults: Effect of different noise scenarios

BACKGROUND

Epidemiological evidence indicates an association between transportation noise exposure and a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Sleep disturbances are thought to be one of the mechanisms as it is well established that a few nights of short or poor sleep impair glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in healthy good sleepers.

OBJECTIVES

The present study aimed to determine the extent to which exposure to nocturnal transportation noise affects glucose metabolism, and whether it is related to noise-induced sleep alterations.

METHODS

Twenty-one young healthy volunteers (nine women) participated in a six-day laboratory study starting with a noise-free baseline night, then four nights sleeping with randomly-presented transportation noise scenarios (three road and one railway noise scenario) with identical average sound level of 45dB but differing in eventfulness and ending with a noise-free recovery night. Sleep was measured by polysomnography. Glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity were measured after the baseline, the last noise night and the recovery nights with an oral glucose tolerance test using Matsuda and Stumvoll insulin sensitivity indexes. Eleven participants were assigned a less eventful noise scenario during the last noise night (LE-group), while the other ten had a more eventful noise scenario (ME-group). Baseline metabolic and sleep variables between the two intervention groups were compared using a non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test while mixed models were used for repeated measure analysis.

RESULTS

All participants had increased glucose_AUC (mean±SE, 14±2%, p<0.0001) and insulin_AUC (55±10%, p<0.0001) after the last noise night compared to the baseline night. 2h-glucose level tended to increase only in the ME-group between baseline (5.1±0.22mmol·L^-1) and the last noise night (6.1±0.39mmol·L^-1, condition: p=0.001, interaction: p=0.08). Insulin sensitivity assessed with Matsuda and Stumvoll indexes respectively decreased by 7±8% (p=0.001) and 9±2% (p<0.0001) after four nights with transportation noise. Only participants in the LE-group showed beneficial effects of the noise-free recovery night on glucose regulation (relative change to baseline: glucose_AUC: 1±2%, p=1.0 for LE-group and 18±4%, p<0.0001 for ME-group; Stumvoll index: 3.2±2.6%, p=1.0 for LE-group and 11±2.5%, p=0.002 for ME-group). Sleep was mildly impaired with increased sleep latency of 8±2min (<0.0001) and more cortical arousals per hour of sleep (1.8±0.6arousals/h, p=0.01) during the last noise night compared to baseline. No significant associations between sleep measures and glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity were found.

CONCLUSION

In line with epidemiological findings, sleeping four nights with transportation noise impaired glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Based on the presented sound exposure, the eventfulness of the noise scenarios seems to play an important role for noise-induced alterations in glucose regulation. However, we could not confirm our hypothesis that transportation noise impairs glucose regulation via deterioration in sleep quality and quantity. Therefore, other factors, such as stress-related pathways, may need to be considered as potential triggers for noise-evoked glucose intolerance in future research.

The impact of aircraft noise exposure on objective parameters of sleep quality: results of the DEBATS study in France

BACKGROUND

Noise in the vicinity of airports is a public health issue. Exposure to aircraft noise has been shown to have adverse effects on health and particularly on sleep. Many studies support the hypothesis that noise at night can affect subjective sleep quality. Fewer studies, however, have performed objective measurements of sleep.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate by actigraphy the relationship between aircraft noise exposure and objective parameters of sleep quality in the population living near two French airports.

METHODS

This study includes 112 participants living in the vicinity of Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Toulouse-Blagnac airports. Wrist actigraphy measurements were performed during eight nights to evaluate objective parameters of sleep quality such as sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), total sleep time (TST), time in bed (TB) and sleep efficiency (SE). Acoustic measurements were made simultaneously both inside the participants' bedrooms and outside (at the exterior frontage) to estimate aircraft noise levels. Energy indicators related to the sound energetic average for a given period of time, as well as indicators related to noise events (eg, the number of events that exceed a given threshold), were estimated. Logistic and linear regression models were used, taking into account potential confounders: age; gender; marital status; education; and body mass index (BMI).

RESULTS

Energy indicators, in particular, indicators related to noise events were significantly associated with objective parameters of sleep quality. Increased levels of aircraft noise and increased numbers of aircraft noise events increased the time required for sleep onset (SOL) and the total wake time after sleep onset (WASO) and decreased sleep efficiency (SE). An association was also observed between aircraft noise exposure and an increase in total sleep time (TST) and time in bed (TB).

CONCLUSION

The findings of the present study contribute to the overall evidence suggesting that nocturnal aircraft noise exposure may decrease the objective quality of sleep. Aircraft noise exposure affects objective parameters of sleep quality, not only regarding noise levels but also regarding the number of events. Mechanisms for adapting to sleep deprivation could be observed.

Modeled and perceived RF-EMF, noise and air pollution and symptoms in a population cohort. Is perception key in predicting symptoms?

BACKGROUND

Psychosocial research has shown that perceived exposure can influence symptom reporting, regardless of actual exposure. The impact of this phenomenon on the interpretation of results from epidemiological research on environmental determinants of symptoms is unclear.

OBJECTIVE

Our aim was to compare associations between modeled exposures, the perceived level of these exposures and reported symptoms (non-specific symptoms, sleep disturbances, and respiratory symptoms) for three different environmental exposures (radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF), noise, and air pollution). These environmental exposures vary in the degree to which they can be sensorially observed.

METHODS

Participant characteristics, perceived exposures, and self-reported health were assessed with a baseline (n = 14,829, 2011/2012) and follow-up (n = 7905, 2015) questionnaire in the Dutch population-based Occupational and Environmental Health Cohort (AMIGO). Environmental exposures were estimated at the home address using spatial models. Cross-sectional and longitudinal regression models were used to examine the associations between modeled and perceived exposures, and reported symptoms.

RESULTS

The extent to which exposure sources could be observed by participants likely influenced correlations between modeled and perceived exposure as correlations were moderate for air pollution (r_Sp = 0.34) and noise (r_Sp = 0.40), but less so for RF-EMF (r_Sp = 0.11). Perceived exposures were consistently associated with increased symptom scores (respiratory, sleep, non-specific). Modeled exposures, except RF-EMF, were associated with increased symptom scores, but these associations disappeared or strongly diminished when accounted for perceived exposure in the analyses.

DISCUSSION

Perceived exposure has an important role in symptom reporting. When environmental determinants of symptoms are studied without acknowledging the potential role of both modeled and perceived exposures, there is a risk of bias in health risk assessment. However, the etiological role of exposure perceptions in relation to symptom reporting requires further research.

Traffic noise, noise annoyance and psychotropic medication use

BACKGROUND

Road-traffic noise can induce stress, which may contribute to mental health disorders. Mental health problems have not received much attention in noise research. People perceive noise differently, which may affect the extent to which noise contributes to poor mental health at the individual level. This paper aims to assess the relationships between outdoor traffic noise and noise annoyance and the use of psychotropic medication.

METHODS

We conducted a survey to assess noise annoyance and psychotropic medication among residents of the Helsinki Capital Region of Finland. We also assessed the associations of annoyance and road-traffic noise with sleep disorders, anxiety and depression. Respondents were randomly sampled from the Finnish Population registry, and data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Outdoor traffic noise was modelled using the Nordic prediction model. Associations between annoyance and modelled façade-noise levels with mental health outcome indicators were assessed using a binary logistic regression while controlling for socioeconomic, lifestyle and exposure-related factors.

RESULTS

A total of 7321 respondents returned completed questionnaires. Among the study respondents, 15%, 7% and 7% used sleep medication, anxiolytic and antidepressant medications, respectively, in the year preceding the study. Noise annoyance was associated with anxiolytic drug use, OR = 1.41 (95% CI: 1.02-1.95), but not with sedative or antidepressant use. There was suggestive association between modelled noise at levels higher than 60 dB and anxiolytic or antidepressant use. In respondents whose bedroom windows faced the street, modelled noise was definitively associated with antidepressant use. Noise sensitivity did not modify the effect of noise but was associated with an increased use of psychotropic medication.

CONCLUSION

We observed suggestive associations between high levels of road-traffic noise and psychotropic medication use. Noise sensitivity was associated with psychotropic medication use.

Pathways linking residential noise and air pollution to mental ill-health in young adults

BACKGROUND

Recent years have seen growing, but still tentative, evidence of the potential associations of environmental noise and air pollution with mental disorders. In the present study, we aimed to examine the associations between residential noise and air pollution exposures and general mental health in young adults with a focus on underlying processes METHODS: We sampled 720 students (18-35 years) from one university in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Residential noise (L_Aeq; day equivalent noise level) and air pollution (NO₂) were assessed at participant's residential address by land use regression models. General mental health was measured with a short form of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). The following putative mediators were considered: annoyance from environmental pollution, sleep disturbance, restorative quality of the neighborhood, neighborhood social cohesion, and commuting/leisure time physical activity. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the theoretically-indicated interplay between exposures, mediators, and GHQ.

RESULTS

We observed an association between higher L_Aeq and GHQ, in which environmental annoyance and neighborhood restorative quality emerged as key mediators. First, L_Aeq was associated with higher annoyance, and through it with lower restorative quality, and then in turn with lower physical activity, and thus with higher GHQ. Simultaneously, higher annoyance was associated with higher sleep disturbance, and thereby with higher GHQ. NO₂ had no overall association with GHQ, but it was indirectly associated with it through higher annoyance, lower restorative quality, and lower physical activity working in serial.

CONCLUSION

We found evidence that increased residential noise was related to mental ill-health through several indirect pathways. Air pollution was associated with mental health only indirectly.

Low Income as a Vulnerable Factor to the Effect of Noise on Insomnia

OBJECTIVE

The present study aimed to examine the potential mediating effect of income level on the association between noise exposure and insomnia.

METHODS

706 individuals were evaluated in conjunction with 2014 noise map data from Seoul, South Korea. Cross-sectional analysis was performed to examine differences in noise level according to household income, while three separate logistic regression models were used to examine factors influencing insomnia. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated after adjusting for depression, anxiety, auditory acuity and noise sensitivity in the first model. Analyses were adjusted for sociodemographic variables in the second model, lifestyle factors and medical illnesses in the third model.

RESULTS

Noise level was significantly associated with an increased risk of insomnia in the low-income group, although no such association was observed in the high-income group. Groups exposed to >60 dB of noise (Lden; day-evening-night equivalent) exhibited a 1.79-fold increase in the incidence of insomnia relative to those exposed to <50 dB. The result was significant after adjusting sociodemographic variables, although not significant when adjusted for lifestyle factors and medical illnesses.

CONCLUSION

Individuals with low income may be more vulnerable to the deleterious effects of noise exposure on health. Various aspects including income should be considered to ascertain the influence of noise on insomnia.

Long-term exposure to transportation noise and air pollution in relation to incident diabetes in the SAPALDIA study

Background

Epidemiological studies have inconsistently linked transportation noise and air pollution (AP) with diabetes risk. Most studies have considered single noise sources and/or AP, but none has investigated their mutually independent contributions to diabetes risk.

Methods

We investigated 2631 participants of the Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung and Heart Diseases in Adults (SAPALDIA), without diabetes in 2002 and without change of residence between 2002 and 2011. Using questionnaire and biomarker data, incident diabetes cases were identified in 2011. Noise and AP exposures in 2001 were assigned to participants’ residences (annual average road, railway or aircraft noise level during day-evening-night (Lden), total night number of noise events, intermittency ratio (temporal variation as proportion of event-based noise level over total noise level) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels. We applied mixed Poisson regression to estimate the relative risk (RR) of diabetes and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) in mutually-adjusted models.

Results

Diabetes incidence was 4.2%. Median [interquartile range (IQR)] road, railway, aircraft noise and NO₂ were 54 (10) dB, 32 (11) dB, 30 (12) dB and 21 (15) μg/m³, respectively. Lden road and aircraft were associated with incident diabetes (respective RR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.02–1.78 and 1.86; 95% CI: 0.96–3.59 per IQR) independently of Lden railway and NO₂ (which were not associated with diabetes risk) in mutually adjusted models. We observed stronger effects of Lden road among participants reporting poor sleep quality or sleeping with open windows.

Conclusions

Transportation noise may be more relevant than AP in the development of diabetes, potentially acting through noise-induced sleep disturbances.

The Development of a Multiple-Item Annoyance Scale (MIAS) for Transportation Noise Annoyance

In 2001, Team#6 of the International Commission on Biological Effects of Noise (ICBEN) recommended the use of two single international standardised questions and response scales. This recommendation has been widely accepted in the scientific community. Nevertheless, annoyance can be regarded as a multidimensional construct comprising the three elements: (1) experience of an often repeated noise-related disturbance and the behavioural response to cope with it, (2) an emotional/attitudinal response to the sound and its disturbing impact, and (3) the perceived control or coping capacity with regard to the noise situation. The psychometric properties of items reflecting these three elements have been explored for aircraft noise annoyance. Analyses were conducted using data of the NORAH-Study (Noise-Related Annoyance, Cognition, and Health), and a multi-item noise annoyance scale (MIAS) has been developed and tested post hoc by using a stepwise process (exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses). Preliminary results were presented to the 12th ICBEN Congress in 2017. In this study, the validation of MIAS is done for aircraft noise and extended to railway and road traffic noise. The results largely confirm the concept of MIAS as a second-order construct of annoyance for all of the investigated transportation noise sources; however, improvements can be made, in particular with regard to items addressing the perceived coping capacity.

WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region: A Systematic Review on Environmental Noise and Effects on Sleep

To evaluate the quality of available evidence on the effects of environmental noise exposure on sleep a systematic review was conducted. The databases PSYCINFO, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science and the TNO Repository were searched for non-laboratory studies on the effects of environmental noise on sleep with measured or predicted noise levels and published in or after the year 2000. The quality of the evidence was assessed using GRADE criteria. Seventy four studies predominately conducted between 2000 and 2015 were included in the review. A meta-analysis of surveys linking road, rail, and aircraft noise exposure to self-reports of sleep disturbance was conducted. The odds ratio for the percent highly sleep disturbed for a 10 dB increase in Lnight was significant for aircraft (1.94; 95% CI 1.61-2.3), road (2.13; 95% CI 1.82-2.48), and rail (3.06; 95% CI 2.38-3.93) noise when the question referred to noise, but non-significant for aircraft (1.17; 95% CI 0.54-2.53), road (1.09; 95% CI 0.94-1.27), and rail (1.27; 95% CI 0.89-1.81) noise when the question did not refer to noise. A pooled analysis of polysomnographic studies on the acute effects of transportation noise on sleep was also conducted and the unadjusted odds ratio for the probability of awakening for a 10 dBA increase in the indoor Lmax was significant for aircraft (1.35; 95% CI 1.22-1.50), road (1.36; 95% CI 1.19-1.55), and rail (1.35; 95% CI 1.21-1.52) noise. Due to a limited number of studies and the use of different outcome measures, a narrative review only was conducted for motility, cardiac and blood pressure outcomes, and for children's sleep. The effect of wind turbine and hospital noise on sleep was also assessed. Based on the available evidence, transportation noise affects objectively measured sleep physiology and subjectively assessed sleep disturbance in adults. For other outcome measures and noise sources the examined evidence was conflicting or only emerging. According to GRADE criteria, the quality of the evidence was moderate for cortical awakenings and self-reported sleep disturbance (for questions that referred to noise) induced by traffic noise, low for motility measures of traffic noise induced sleep disturbance, and very low for all other noise sources and investigated sleep outcomes.
