Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite increasing interest in the use of nicotine pouches in Australia - where retail sale of the products is illegal - research exploring patterns of pouch use and reasons for use is lacking. Accordingly, this study explored young Australians' experiences with nicotine pouches. METHODS An online survey was administered to 1598 Australians aged 16-39 years (53 % women). We assessed (i) awareness and use (lifetime and past 30-day) of nicotine pouches, (ii) patterns of use (e.g., flavours and nicotine strength used), (iii) product source, and (iv) reasons for use. Regression analyses were conducted to assess socio-demographic predictors of awareness and use. RESULTS Just over three-quarters (77 %) of the sample reported being aware of nicotine pouches. Lifetime use was reported by 26 % of respondents and past 30-day use by 19 %. Among those who reported past 30-day use, fruit (35 %) and menthol/mint (34 %) flavours were most commonly used. In terms of pouch source, one-third (33 %) reported obtaining the product from a tobacconist. The most common reasons for use were "they come in flavours I like" (34 %) and "to help me quit smoking" (32 %). Awareness, lifetime use, and past 30-day use of nicotine pouches were more likely among men, those who reported current use of tobacco products, and those who reported current use of e-cigarettes. CONCLUSIONS Awareness and use of nicotine pouches among young Australians may be substantial enough to warrant the inclusion of items measuring pouch use in national surveys. Efforts should be made to better enforce existing laws regarding the sale of nicotine pouches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous youth tobacco research has identified multiple factors relating to intentions to quit vaping and quit attempts among current e-cigarette users in adolescents. The pathways in the complex associations with vaping cessation behaviors remain unclear. METHODS Using data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) (grades 6-12), structural equation models (SEMs) are developed to examine the associations of social environment, vaping risk perceptions, e-cigarette marketing, vaping characteristics, and demographics with two outcome measures - intentions to quit vaping and past year quit attempts among current e-cigarette users. RESULTS The national sample of current e-cigarette users (n = 2,701) consisted of 52.7 % females, 47.0 % non-Hispanic Whites, 80.1 % high school students, and 56.2 % heterosexual individuals. Among them, 70.2 % reported intentions to quit vaping and 66.3 % reported past year quit attempts. The protective factor for quit intentions was vaping risk perceptions (p < 0.001). Risk factors included e-cigarette marketing (p = 0.04), dual use of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products (p = 0.003), vaping due to feeling anxious or stressed (p = 0.01), vaping for nicotine buzz (p = 0.002), nicotine dependence (p = 0.02), identifying as Gay or Lesbian (p < 0.001), bisexual (p = 0.03), or Hispanic (p = 0.04). Similar associations were observed with quit attempts except that e-cigarette marketing, vaping due to feeling anxious or stressed, vaping dependence, and identifying as Hispanic were not significant. Besides, high vaping frequency (p < 0.001), grade level (p < 0.001) and not sure about sexual orientation (p = 0.01) were also negatively associated with quit attempts. CONCLUSIONS This study provided insights into factors influencing vaping cessation outcomes among adolescent current e-cigarette users. Developing tailored vaping cessation programs based on these findings could enhance quit success.

Abstract
Contingency management (CM), which involves the delivery of incentives upon meeting behavioral goals, has the potential to improve substance use treatment outcomes. The intervention allows for flexibility through numerous modifiable components including changes to incentive magnitude and schedule, target behavior, and intervention structure. Unfortunately, numerous changes in the substance use landscape have occurred in the past 10 to 15 years: Substances are more potent, overdose risk has increased, new substances and methods of use have been introduced, and substance classes are increasingly being intentionally and unintentionally mixed. These developments potentially undermine CM outcomes. We explored recent substance use changes due to legislative, regulatory, social, and economic factors for four substance classes: stimulants, opioids, tobacco, and cannabis. We discuss potential adjustments to the modifiable components of CM for future research in response to these changes. By continually adapting to the shifting substance use landscape, CM can maintain optimal efficacy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The use rate of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among adolescents is continuously rising globally, posing new challenges to public health and negatively impacting adolescent health. This study employs bibliometric methods to systematically present the current state and evolving trends in global research on adolescent e-cigarette use. METHODS This study uses CiteSpace to conduct a bibliometric analysis of articles related to adolescent e-cigarette use from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database. Firstly, performance analysis and collaboration network analysis were utilized to clarify the basic publication status, main knowledge producers, and knowledge collaboration networks in adolescent e-cigarette use research. Secondly, a co-citation network analysis was performed to visually analyze the disciplinary characteristics and 'hot topics' in this field. Finally, keyword burst detection and clustering techniques were employed to further explain the development trends and frontiers of research on adolescent e-cigarette use. RESULTS A total of 2063 research articles and review articles were included in this study. Research on adolescent e-cigarette use has significantly increased from 2002 to 2024. The United States, the United Kingdom and Canada are the main contributors, with their institutions and researchers playing key roles in the international collaborative network. Current research increasingly adopts interdisciplinary approaches. Keyword co-occurrence and burst identified current research 'hotspots' including vaping, substance use, public policy, prevention, advertising, and cessation. Co-citation cluster analysis revealed promising research areas such as attractiveness, environment and health, accessibility and smoking behavior, and mental health. CONCLUSIONS Through data mining and visualization techniques, this study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of published work on e-cigarettes and adolescence. The results of this work offer references for researchers in future investigations.

Abstract
Previous in vitro toxicological assessments have demonstrated that almost no mutagenic and genotoxic activities in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) and heated tobacco product (HTP) aerosols were detected even at the maximum recommended concentration. To accurately compare the toxicity levels between cigarette smoke and e-cigarette or HTP aerosols, higher exposure concentrations increasing the possibility to detect toxicity in in vitro tests are necessary, while avoiding solvent-induced toxicity. This study aimed to develop a solvent-free extraction method to obtain concentrated aerosol extracts for improved toxicological evaluation. Our novel approach involved squeezing several Cambridge filter pads, which collected aerosol constituents, in closed containers to achieve solvent-free extraction with comparable efficiency to the conventional method using organic solvents. The optimized squeezing method yielded extracts with concentrations approximately 10 times higher than those obtained in conventional extraction methods. Yield comparison of various constituents, such as flavoring compounds, in e-cigarette aerosol extracts revealed similar extraction efficiencies between the squeezing and conventional methods. However, the extraction efficiency for constituents with high log Pow values, predominantly found in HTP aerosol extracts, was unacceptably low using the squeezing method. In addition, solvent-free centrifuging, another type of extraction method, exhibited unsatisfactory results for even e-cigarette aerosols compared with the conventional method. Our findings suggest that the solvent-free squeezing method is suitable for extracting aerosol collected mass from e-cigarette aerosol but not from HTP aerosol. We anticipate that the solvent-free squeezing method will contribute to a deeper understanding of toxicological differences between e-cigarettes and conventional combustible cigarettes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) are a new class of nicotine products. This scoping review summarizes evidence on ONPs and explores their potential public health impact. AIMS AND METHODS We conducted a structured literature search for empirical studies across three electronic databases through January 10, 2024. Outcomes included ONP product characteristics, use patterns, beliefs and perceptions, toxicity, and marketing and sales. RESULTS Sixty-two studies were included, 17 were industry-funded. Most studies were from the United States. While large variations across studies were observed in ONP youth prevalence estimates, nationally representative U.S. studies find current use at 1.5% and lifetime use below 2.5% through 2023. Between 35% and 42% of U.S. adolescents and young adults have heard of ONPs, and 9-21% of tobacco-naïve youth were susceptible to trying them. U.S. adult-use estimates varied widely (0.8%-3% current; 3%-16% lifetime use) and were limited to populations with a history of tobacco use. The chemical composition of ONPs suggests fewer harmful/potentially harmful compounds at lower levels than cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (SLT), except formaldehyde. Industry-funded studies find substantially less cytotoxicity compared to cigarettes and suggest that higher nicotine-strength ONPs can deliver nicotine at levels comparable to or higher than SLT or cigarettes, although with slower nicotine release than cigarettes. Evidence on the cytotoxicity of ONPs relative to SLT is mixed. CONCLUSIONS ONPs appear to be less toxic than cigarettes and deliver comparable nicotine, presenting an alternative for combustible product users, although key data are mainly available from industry-funded studies. Data from independent research is critically needed. Industry marketing of ONPs may encourage initiation in youth and situational and dual use in adults. IMPLICATIONS The review provides an initial assessment of the potential role of ONPs in harm reduction and aims to determine unintended consequences of their use (youth uptake and dual-use) and identify populations that disproportionately use the product. This information is essential for tobacco regulatory bodies in determining the net public health impact of nicotine pouches.

Abstract
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a unique analytical technique with excellent performance in terms of sensitivity, non-destructive detection and resolution. However, due to the randomness and poor repeatability of hot spot distribution, SERS quantitative analysis is still challenging. Meanwhile, snus is a type of tobacco product that can release nicotine and other components in the mouth without burning, and the rapid detection technique based on SERS can reliably evaluate the amount of nicotine released from snus, which is of great significance for understanding its characteristics and regulating its components. Herein, the strategy was proposed to solve the feasibility of SERS quantitative detection based on self-assembled core-shell nanoparticles with embedded internal standards (EIS) due to EIS signal can effectively correct SERS signal fluctuations caused by different aggregation states and measurement conditions, thus allowing reliable quantitative SERS analysis of targets with different surface affinity. By means of process control, after the Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) were modified with 4-Mercaptobenzonitrile (4-MBN) as internal standard molecules, Ag shell with a certain thickness was grown on the surface of the AuNP@4-MBN, and then the Au@4-MBN@Ag NPs were used to regulate and control the assembly of liquid-liquid interface. The high-density nano-arrays assembled at the liquid-liquid interface ensure high reproducibility as SERS substrates, and which could be used for SERS detection of nicotine released from snus products. In addition, time-mapping research shows that this method can also be used to dynamically monitor the release of nicotine. Moreover, such destruction-free evaluation of the release of nicotine from snus products opens up new perspectives for further research about the impact of nicotinoids-related health programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between inter-pregnancy intervals and placenta previa and placenta accreta spectrum among women who had prior cesarean deliveries with respect to maternal age at first cesarean delivery. METHODS This retrospective study included clinical data from 9981 singleton pregnant women with a history of cesarean delivery at 11 public tertiary hospitals in seven provinces of China between January 2017 and December 2017. The study population was divided into four groups (<2, 2-5, 5-10, ≥10 years of the interval) according to the inter-pregnancy interval. The rate of placenta previa and placenta accreta spectrum among the four groups was compared, and multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between inter-pregnancy interval and placenta previa and placenta accreta spectrum with respect to maternal age at first cesarean delivery. RESULTS Compared to women aged 30-34 years old at first cesarean delivery, the risk of placenta previa (aRR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.16-1.88) and placenta accreta spectrum (aRR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.28-2.35) were higher among women aged 18-24. Multivariate regression results showed that women at 18-24 with <2 years intervals exhibited a 5.05-fold increased risk for placenta previa compared with those with 2-5-year intervals (aRR, 5.05; 95% CI, 1.13-22.51). In addition, women aged 18-24 with less than 2 years intervals had an 8.44 times greater risk of developing PAS than women aged 30-34 with 2 to 5 years intervals (aRR, 8.44; 95% CI, 1.82-39.26). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggested that short inter-pregnancy intervals were associated with increased risks for placenta previa, and placenta accreta spectrum for women under 25 years at first cesarean delivery, which may be partly attributed to obstetrical outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives: This paper describes trends in youth e-cigarette (EC) and tobacco cigarette (TC) purchasing behaviors in Canada, England, and the United States (US) in relationship to changing minimum legal age (MLA) laws. Methods: Data are from eight cross-sectional online surveys among national samples of 16- to 19-year-olds in Canada, England, and the US conducted from 2017 to 2022 (N = 104,467). Average wave percentage change in EC and TC purchasing prevalence and purchase locations were estimated using Joinpoint regressions. Results: EC purchasing increased between 2017 and 2022, although the pattern of change differed by country. EC purchasing plateaued in 2019 for the US and in 2020 for Canada, while increasing through 2022 for England. TC purchasing declined sharply in the US, with purchasing from traditional retail locations declining, while purchasing from social sources increased. Vape shops were the most common location for EC purchasing, although declining in England and the US. Conclusion: Trends in EC and TC purchasing trends in the US are consistent with the expected impact of the federal MLA law increasing the legal age to 21 years in December 2019.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco-free nicotine pouches are one of the fastest growing tobacco product categories in the US market. However, data on awareness, appeal or ever use of these products in the USA are limited. METHODS We surveyed a population-based sample of US adults who smoked (n=1018) between January and February 2021 about awareness, ever use of or interest in nicotine pouches. Multivariable logistic regression models explored the relationship between nicotine pouch variables and demographic and tobacco use characteristics. RESULTS In early 2021, 29.2% of adults who smoked had ever seen or heard of nicotine pouches, 5.6% had ever tried pouches and 16.8% reported interest in using pouches in the next 6 months. Adults who smoked aged 18-44 years and those who had ever used smokeless tobacco (SLT) were more likely to be aware of nicotine pouches. Interest in using nicotine pouches was more prevalent among adult smokers who planned to quit within 6 months, attempted to quit before using counselling or another tobacco product and had ever used pouches. Among adults who smoked, those with more education had lower odds of ever using nicotine pouches while those who had attempted to quit before using traditional methods or ever used SLT had higher odds of ever use. CONCLUSION Levels of awareness, appeal and trial of nicotine pouches among US adults who smoke were modest, with variation by age, education, quit plans and quit attempt methods. Continued surveillance is warranted, including among naïve users and users of other tobacco and nicotine products.

Abstract
Nicotine pouches are tobacco-free products that are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. They are held between the user's lip and gum to provide a source of nicotine. This article describes the composition of nicotine pouches, the legality surrounding their production and sale, patterns of use and explores possible oral and general health effects of their usage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most adolescent and young adult (youth) smokers and users of novel nicotine products wish to quit. Little is known, at a population level, about youth cessation activities, and the counselor's experiences in working with youth smoking and nicotine product cessation. METHODS A questionnaire was mailed to all 98 municipalities in Denmark on 31 October 2022. Youths were defined as those aged 16-25 years. The participation rate was 96% (n=94). Simple descriptive statistics were performed. RESULTS This survey explored youth-targeted smoking and nicotine product cessation activities and ex-periences from municipality counselors across the whole nation. Overall, 60% of the Danish municipal counselors had low/very low/no personal experience with youth cessation interventions, 89% found it dif-ficult to work with youth counseling, 90% found it difficult to recruit youth to nicotine cessation services, and only 25% of the active municipalities were described as highly experienced. A higher percentage of the highly experienced municipalities reported that they share the responsibility of recruitment to cessation services with schools, counsel youths in separate groups from adults, and have good experiences with online counseling. CONCLUSIONS This Danish nationwide survey showed that even in a country with very well-organized and free-of-charge cessation counseling programs, very few municipalities give assistance to youth, and most find it difficult to work with youth. Cessation services have been designed for adult smokers and seem to have failed to meet the needs of young smokers and users of novel nicotine products, at least in Denmark. There is an urgent need for research on how to effectively recruit youth to cessation services, and what works to help youth quit.

Abstract
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive analytical detection technique that provides unique chemical and structural information on target molecules. Snus is a type of tobacco product that can release nicotine and other components under certain humidity and temperature without burning, and the evaluation of its nicotine release under different storage conditions is very important for understanding its characteristics, regulating its components, and setting reasonable storage conditions. Herein, by means of an artificial climate box and suction extraction device, the volatile release evaluations of nicotine from snus products under different storage conditions were performed based on Fe3O4 microparticles coated with Au nanorods and Au nanoparticles (Fe3O4@AuNRsNPs) as SERS substrates combined with a capillary. The Fe3O4@AuNRsNPs assemblies can be fixed in the inner wall of the capillary with the aid of an external magnetic field, which improved the maneuverability of the SERS substrates. By comparing the intensities of the spectral peaks of the symmetrical breathing of the pyridine moiety of nicotine molecules with increasing temperature and humidity, which could significantly accelerate the volatile release of a small amount of nicotine, the nicotine release under different conditions could be evaluated. Based on this strategy, it was possible to obtain the storage or placement conditions of the product. The results of this study provide a reference to clarify the volatile release of nicotine under various storage conditions, which is helpful for better regulation of the levels of nicotine in snus. Moreover, such destruction-free evaluation of the volatile release of nicotine from snus products under different storage conditions opens up new perspectives for further research about the impact of nicotinoids on smokers' health and cessation programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking cannabis using a tobacco-derived cigar shell or wrap, called blunt smoking, exposes individuals to non-trivial amounts of nicotine. The extent smoking blunts impact the risk of initiating other tobacco products is not well understood. We investigated if past-year blunt smoking is related to the risk of initiating cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and cigars. METHODS We obtained data on a nationally representative, non-institutionalized, civilian cohort of US residents aged 12 years and older who had never used cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or any cigar at baseline and surveyed annually for three years from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. We estimated the proportional hazard (odds) of initiating these tobacco products associated with past-year blunt smoking, non-blunt cannabis use, or neither using discrete-time survival analyses. RESULTS Smoking blunts increased the risk of starting cigarettes (OR = 4.5), e-cigarettes (OR = 3.7), and cigars (OR = 6.7) compared to using neither blunts nor cannabis. Non-blunt cannabis use also increased the risk of starting cigarettes (OR = 4.0) but moderately for e-cigarettes (OR = 2.8) and any cigar (OR = 2.2). Blunt use was strongly related to starting combustible tobacco (cigarettes or cigars; OR = 9.0) and any three tobacco products (OR = 10.9). Exploratory findings showed that cigarillos drove cigar results and effect modification by age, race/ethnicity, and sex. CONCLUSIONS People who smoke blunts risk starting cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and cigars more than those who abstain from cannabis. Blunts may contribute to tobacco initiation above cannabis alone.

Abstract
Introduction Most people who smoke cigarettes begin in their teens and teens may also be attracted to new tobacco, nicotine, and cannabis products. We describe use prevalence among upper-secondary school students in Switzerland, including daily use, of tobacco, nicotine, and cannabis products. Methods We invited secondary school students (age 15 to 21) in two Swiss cantons to take an online survey between October 2021 and February 2022. The survey collected demographic information and asked how frequently they used tobacco products (cigarettes in commercial packages, self-rolled cigarettes, hookahs, pipes, cigars and cigarillos, tobacco heating systems, snus, snuff), non-tobacco nicotine products (nicotine pouches, e-cigarettes with and without nicotine), and cannabis products (smoking with and without tobacco, cannabis vaping). Answers were scored on a Likert scale (no use in past month, less than weekly, weekly but not daily, daily use, prefer not to say), then tabulated and reported as descriptive statistics. Results Of 32,614 students in the schools we contacted, 9,515 (29.2%) completed the survey; 49.5% identified as female and 48.4% as male; 9.5% were under 16, 47% were 16-17, 27.5% were 18-19, and 16% were over 19. Reported daily use was most frequent for tobacco cigarettes in commercial packages (14.2%), snus (4.1%) and cannabis smoking with tobacco (3.6%). Most participants (54.8%) reported they had used at least one product at least once within the last month. Conclusion Students who used a product were most likely to smoke cigarettes, but many regularly used new tobacco, nicotine and cannabis products, though use frequency varies.

Abstract
Introduction Novel tobacco-free oral nicotine products are not combusted, easy to conceal, available in flavors, and do not contain tobacco leaf. Since 2016, oral nicotine product sales have increased and may be gaining popularity among youth. This study aims to examine the trends in the prevalence and correlates of oral nicotine product use among U.S. youth. Methods Data from participants aged 16-19 years in the U.S. International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project Youth Tobacco and Vaping Survey were analyzed cross-sectionally from August 2019, February 2020, August 2020, February 2021, and August 2021. Weighted descriptive statistics and logistic regressions were used to describe the use and correlates of oral nicotine products. Results Oral nicotine product use significantly increased from 3.5% in August 2019 to 4.1% in August 2021. Oral nicotine product use was most prevalent among those aged 18 years, male, and non-Hispanic White. Those who used cigarettes (AOR=2.18, 95% CI=19.37, 40.88), nicotine vaping products (AOR=4.27, 95% CI=3.02, 6.04), and smokeless tobacco (AOR=28.14, 95% CI=19.37, 40.88) in the past 30 days were more likely to report recent use of oral nicotine products. Conclusions Although oral nicotine products are less popular among U.S. youth than cigarettes, nicotine vaping products, and smokeless tobacco, their prevalence of use significantly increased. Oral nicotine product users are more likely to use other nicotine products, but the availability of flavors and easy-to-conceal design may be appealing to those who may not use nicotine products. Researchers should continue to observe the behaviors associated with oral nicotine product use to inform the need for future regulatory efforts.

Abstract
Purpose This investigation applied the Product Life Cycle (PLC) and Product Evolutionary Cycle (PEC) frameworks to the nicotine and tobacco market to predict the impact of television commercials for electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) on youth. Design/methodology/approach Surveys were administered over a three-year period to 417 alternative high school students from southern California who had never used e-cigarettes, cigarettes, or cigars at the baseline. Covariate-adjusted logistic regression causal mediation models were employed to test competing hypotheses from the PLC and PEC frameworks. Findings Results support a refined version of the PEC framework where e-cigarette commercials increase the odds of e-cigarette use, which leads to subsequent use of competing products including cigarettes and cigars. Originality Regulations in the United States that permit television commercials for e-cigarettes but restrict the promotion of cigarettes and cigars have created an opportunity to study product adoption among youth consumers when one product has a strategic marketing advantage. Practical implications This investigation demonstrates the utility of frameworks that conceptualize youth-oriented marketing as a two-part process in which potential customers are first convinced to adopt a behavior and then enticed to use a specific product to enact the behavior. Social implications Rising rates of nicotine and tobacco product use among youth may be partially attributable to e-cigarette commercials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of xerostomia in a healthy population with e-cigarettes and/or combustible tobacco. METHODS The following electronic databases were searched: Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Wan-Fang Database, from 1 January 2000 to 20 October 2022. The language was limited to Chinese and English. The data were analyzed using Stata 15.0, and the prevalence of xerostomia in different smokers is reported. RESULTS A total of 14 studies were included, with a total sample size of 6827 cases. The overall prevalence of xerostomia was 26% (95% CI: 18-35). In the combustible tobacco population, the prevalence of xerostomia was 24% (95% CI: 21-17), while among e-cigarette users it was 33% (95% CI: 18-48). CONCLUSIONS Current evidence suggests that the prevalence of xerostomia is high in healthy smoking populations. These findings are restricted by the number and quality of the included studies and need to be validated by additional high-quality studies.

PURPOSE New oral nicotine products (ONPs), often advertised as "tobacco-free" (i.e., pouches, gum, lozenges, gummies), come in nontobacco flavors appealing to adolescents. It is unknown how adolescent willingness to use ONPs differs by product type and flavor, and whether sociodemographic disparities exist. METHODS Adolescent never tobacco product users (n = 1, 289) in ninth or 10th grade from 11 high schools in Southern California were surveyed in fall 2021 about ever and past 6-month use of ONPs and sociodemographic characteristics. Adolescents were randomized to view five different ONPs in either fruit or mint flavor, and asked to rate their willingness to use each product. Multivariable logistic random effect-repeated measures regression examined associations of product type, flavor, and sociodemographic characteristics with any willingness to use ONPs. RESULTS Compared to traditional smokeless tobacco (willingness = 17.8%), adolescents reported greater willingness to use ONPs (gum, 28.2%; pouches, 21.1%; lozenge, 22.4%; gummies, 24.1%); adjusted odd ratios [aORs] 1.25-1.84; p-values<.001). Mint flavor (23.3%) compared to fruit flavor (21.4%), significantly increased odds of willingness to use across all ONPs (aOR [95%CI] = 1.15 [1.05, 1.26], p = .004). Younger adolescents (ninth, 24.2% vs. 10th grade, 21.4%) and LGBTQ+ (34.2%) versus heterosexual (19.7%) and cisgender (18.8%) adolescents were more willing to use these products. DISCUSSION Adolescents reported greater willingness to use new ONPs compared to traditional smokeless tobacco. Adolescents who were younger (vs. older adolescents) or identified as LGBTQ+ (vs. heterosexual and cisgender) were more willing to use new ONPs. Efforts to monitor adolescents' willingness to use and actual use of these products are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of e-cigarettes, or vaping, has increased exponentially in the past decade, particularly among youth. Emerging evidence indicates growing nicotine dependence among youth, revealing historically higher rates of dependence among current e-cigarette users compared to rates seen in earlier research. Despite the urgent need for youth vaping cessation interventions, there is limited knowledge about the process of vaping cessation, and few evidence-based interventions are available to young people seeking support. A notable literature review on vaping cessation resources for young people recommended technology-based interventions, such as smartphone apps and SMS text messaging services, as a promising area of vaping cessation research and intervention development. OBJECTIVE The primary aim of our study is to determine the effectiveness of the Crush the Crave app in supporting vaping cessation among youth recruited to the intervention arm via comparison with an assessment-only control group. The primary hypothesis is that participants in the intervention group-those using Crush the Crave-will be more likely to be abstinent at the 6-month follow-up point than participants in the assessment-only control arm. METHODS A 2-arm, single-blind, parallel randomized controlled trial will be conducted over 12 months. Study invitations will be sent to 600 youth (age: 16-18 years) and young adult (age: 19-29 years) e-cigarette users and randomized between an intervention arm, which will be using Crush the Crave (n=300), and an assessment-only control arm (n=300) in a 1:1 ratio. The primary hypothesis is that participants in the intervention group-those using Crush the Crave-will be more likely to be abstinent at the 6-month follow-up point. RESULTS Study recruitment began on March 4, 2022. Recruitment is anticipated to be completed in December 2022. CONCLUSIONS This protocol describes one of the first-ever randomized controlled trial studies to evaluate the effectiveness of an app-based intervention for supporting vaping cessation among youth aged 16 to 18 years and young adults aged 19 to 29 years. The findings from our trial will help increase our understanding of the process of vaping cessation among youth and provide evidence on the effectiveness of an app-based intervention in helping young people quit vaping. The trial results will also have implications in the development of current and future approaches to youth vaping cessation. Abstract
Background: National surveillance assessing use of novel oral tobacco products (OTPs; nicotine pouches, lozenges, and gums not approved for tobacco cessation) among adolescents and young adults is limited. Objectives: To assess OTP behaviors in a sample of adolescent and young adult e-cigarette users, including use prevalence, dual/poly use with other products, and associated demographics. Methods: A national (United States) cross-sectional survey was conducted from March to April 2021 among 2253 participants (ages 14-20; 65% female) who ever used e-cigarettes ≥3 times. Demographics, lifetime use, and past 30-day use of 10 tobacco and cannabis products, including novel and conventional (chew, moist snuff, or snus) OTPs was assessed. Analysis was descriptive, examining use prevalence (lifetime and past 30-day) of each product, including by demographics and other product use. Results: Nearly 44% reported ever using any OTP, with nicotine pouches being the most commonly ever used (29%) and used in the past month (11%). Novel OTP use was more common among older participants (18-20 years), male participants, and past 30-day users of e-cigarettes, combustible tobacco, and conventional oral tobacco. However, female participants and combustible tobacco non-users were over twice and 4-times as likely, respectively, to use novel OTPs than conventional OTPs. Nearly 73% of past 30-day conventional OTP users were past 30-day novel OTP users. Conclusion: Novel OTP use was prevalent among adolescent and young adult e-cigarette users. Compared to conventional OTPs, novel OTPs likely have greater appeal to females and combustible tobacco non-users. Action to restrict access and reduce interest in OTPs is needed to prevent use among this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE While smoking is declining among young people, smokeless tobacco use is increasing. Identifying who is using smokeless tobacco and why is essential in preventing smokeless tobacco use. This study aimed to comprehensively explore the factors of young people's use of smokeless tobacco in western countries and identify research gaps. METHODS We conducted a systematic scoping review of studies that examined factors associated with smokeless tobacco use among young people (ages 13-29) from western countries published between January 2011 and September 2021. Searches were conducted in CINAHL, Medline, and Scopus. Studies on adults, total tobacco use (i.e., did not differentiate between tobacco product types), dual and multiple uses of tobacco, and studies on smokeless tobacco cessation programs were excluded. RESULTS A total of 160 studies were included in this scoping review. The studies were primarily undertaken in the US and the Scandinavian countries, and the majority explored smokeless tobacco use without distinguishing between the specific types. Smokeless tobacco users were more likely to be male, non-Hispanic white, engaging in physical activity, and using other substances, including cigarettes and alcohol. The role of friends and family were identified as critical factors that were related to the use of smokeless tobacco. CONCLUSIONS This scoping review suggests that preventative measures against smokeless tobacco use should focus on peer and family members' roles and that these measures may benefit from targeting males. Additional research, including systematic reviews on this area to validate the identified associated factors, would improve the understanding of smokeless tobacco use.

Abstract
PURPOSE Heated tobacco products (HTP) heat-processed tobacco leaf into an aerosol inhaled by the user. This study assessed prevalence and correlates of HTP awareness, ever use, and current use among US middle and high school students. METHODS Data came from the 2019 and 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey, a cross-sectional survey of US public and private, middle and high school students. HTP awareness, ever use, and current (past 30-day) use were assessed. Weighted prevalence estimates and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) were assessed overall and by sex, school level, race/ethnicity, and current other tobacco product use. RESULTS In 2019, 12.8% (3.44 million) of all students reported HTP awareness, increasing to 19.3% (5.29 million) in 2020 (p < .01). Ever [2019: 2.6% (630 000); 2020: 2.4% (620 000)] and current [2019: 1.6% (420 000); 2020: 1.4% (370 000)] HTP use did not significantly change from 2019 to 2020. Current e-cigarette users were more likely to report ever (2020 aPR = 1.79, 95% CI:1.23, 2.62) or current HTP use (2019 aPR = 5.16, 95% CI: 3.48, 7.67; 2020 aPR = 3.39, 95% CI: 2.10, 5.47) than nonusers. In both years, ever and current HTP use was more likely among current combustible (aPR range = 3.59-8.17) and smokeless tobacco product (aPR range = 2.99-4.09) users than nonusers. CONCLUSIONS HTP awareness increased 51% among US students during 2019-2020; however, HTP use did not significantly change during this period. Students who used other tobacco products were more likely to currently use HTPs. Estimates of HTP awareness and use provided serve as a baseline as future monitoring of these products is warranted. IMPLICATIONS Awareness of heated tobacco products (HTPs) increased among US youth from 2019 to 2020; however, HTP use did not change. These estimates of HTP awareness and use serve as a baseline for future surveillance of these products as their availability in the US increases.

Abstract
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and hookah smoking have gained tremendous popularity over the past decade. With the constantly evolving e-cigarette market and potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on users of these tobacco products, research is needed to assess the prevalence and safety of these devices as well as potential public health implications and cessation tools. For this year in review, PubMed was searched from January 2021-December 14, 2021, for articles related to e-cigarettes, vaping-related lung injury, and hookah smoking. Relevant articles addressing the objectives were included in this review. This review focused primarily on articles based on United States populations. Gray literature and nonpublished articles were not included in this review. The 2020 pandemic resulted in a decline in e-cigarette usage among youth (potentially due to the COVID-19 pandemic); however, recent research in 2021 suggests that e-cigarette usage is increasing again among youth. Conflicting evidence exists for e-cigarettes and the risk of COVID-19 infection, but biological plausibility suggests that e-cigarette users are more susceptible to COVID-19 infection and more severe COVID-19 infection compared to non-e-cigarette users. Hookah smoking has remained stable across the past several years and remains a primarily social activity among youth. New e-cigarette devices are constantly emerging, resulting in an increased demand to understand the safety of these devices. Additionally, hookah smoking continues to be a concerning public health issue with the increase in hookah bars and venues coupled with lack of policy regulations for hookah smoking.

Abstract
In the last decade, the appearance of electronic cigarettes and new tobacco products (heated tobacco or smokeless tobacco) has generated a growing interest in harm reduction methods that are defined as mechanisms that seek to reduce the harmful consequences of tobacco without give up the pleasant effects of it by replacing it with these new electronic devices. However, these products are addictive and not safe as they contain nicotine. Harm reduction is a false solution as it represents a commercial strategy of the tobacco industry to increase its sales, making it difficult to control smoking, since it keeps smokers from consuming tobacco and prevents them from making serious attempts to quit. In addition, these products are a gateway to adolescents in tobacco.

Abstract
Oral nicotine pouches may appeal to young adult current nicotine/tobacco users interested in alternative forms of nicotine that lack pulmonary exposure, but may also appeal to young adult non-users of nicotine/tobacco products. We used data from a 2020 remote digital survey of an ongoing cohort study of young adults from Southern California (aged 19-23) to examine differences in pouch perceptions and use willingness across nicotine/tobacco use statuses. Participants who had never used nicotine pouches (N = 1167) viewed text/imagery from mass-marketed pouch packaging and advertising, then completed measures of willingness to use nicotine pouches, pouch harm perceptions, and hypothetical choice of cigarettes or e-cigarettes over pouches. Willingness to use pouches was significantly higher among non-combustible only (33.8%), combustible only (29.3%), and dual (43.9%) users than non-users (14.7%). Overall, 49.1% of participants were uncertain whether pouches were less harmful than cigarettes and 52.4% were uncertain whether pouches were less harmful than e-cigarettes. Relative harm perceptions did not significantly differ by tobacco use status. Those using non-combustible products (either alone or as part of dual use with combustible tobacco) had greater odds than non-users of reporting that they would use e-cigarettes over nicotine pouches. By contrast, all tobacco product user groups reported greater odds than non-users that they would use cigarettes over pouches. In sum, a sizable minority of young adults might be willing to try using nicotine pouches, but most are uncertain about the relative harm of pouches.

This study examined reported exposure to and perceptions of e-cigarette marketing among youth between 2017 and 2019 across countries with varying e-cigarette marketing restrictions. Cross-sectional online surveys were conducted with 35 490 youth aged 16-19 from England, Canada and the United States in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Weighted logistic regression models examined trends in the adjusted prevalence of self-reported exposure to e-cigarette marketing and the perceived appeal of e-cigarette ads between 2017 and 2019, by country and by smoking/vaping status. Reports of frequent exposure to e-cigarette marketing increased between 2017 and 2019 in all countries, but less so in England, where e-cigarette marketing is more restricted. Perceiving e-cigarette marketing as appealing increased from 2017 to 2019 in Canada and the United States, but not in England. In England, exposure to e-cigarette marketing did not increase in prohibited channels between 2017 and 2019. Between 2017 and 2019, never-users' reports increased for exposure to and appeal of e-cigarette marketing. The results suggest some effectiveness of e-cigarette marketing bans in England and receptivity to e-cigarette marketing among youth never users.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence of use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and waterpipe in Brazil, by population subgroups, and to evaluate the trend between 2013 and 2019. METHODS We used data from the 2019 National Health Survey to estimate the prevalence of lifetime and current use of ENDS and current use of waterpipes by socio-behavioral characteristics. Differences in prevalence over time were calculated using data from the III Brazilian Household Survey on Substance Use-2015 and the National Health Survey-2013. RESULTS For 2019, the prevalence of current use of ENDS was estimated at 0.64% (∼1 million people), of which ∼70% were in the age group of 15-24 years old. The highest prevalence was observed in the Midwest region, but the Southeast region concentrates half of these users. Almost 90% are non-smokers, with high prevalence among those who also use waterpipe and abuse alcohol. There was an increase in ENDS use between 2015 and 2019, particularly among younger people. The prevalence of current waterpipe use in 2019 was estimated at 0.47% (∼800,000 individuals), of which ∼80% were 15-24 years old. There was an increase in the prevalence of current waterpipe use between 2013 and 2019, and among young people the increase was ∼300%. CONCLUSIONS In Brazil, ENDS have been used mostly by young people, and by never smokers of manufactured cigarettes. The use of ENDS and waterpipe has been increasing even with the country's regulatory restrictions, which may compromise the successful history of the tobacco control policy.

Abstract
Background Chronic disease burden is higher among disadvantaged populations. Preventing lifestyle risk behaviors such as poor diet, alcohol use, tobacco smoking, and vaping in adolescence is critical for reducing the risk of chronic disease and related harms in adolescence and adulthood. Although eHealth interventions are a promising prevention approach among the general population, it is unclear whether they adequately serve adolescents from disadvantaged backgrounds such as those living in geographically remote or lower socioeconomic areas. Objective This is the first systematic review to identify, evaluate, and synthesize evidence for the effectiveness of eHealth interventions targeting adolescents living in geographically remote or lower socioeconomic areas in preventing poor diet, alcohol use, tobacco smoking, and vaping. Methods A systematic search will be conducted in 7 electronic databases: the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PROSPERO, MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Scopus, and PsycInfo (Ovid). The search will be limited to eHealth-based experimental studies (ie, randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies) targeting diet, alcohol use, tobacco smoking, and vaping among adolescents (aged 10-19 years). Eligible studies will be those reporting on at least one marker of socioeconomic status (eg, social class, household income, parental occupation status, parental education, and family affluence) or geographical remoteness (eg, living in rural, regional, and remote areas, or living outside major metropolitan centers). One reviewer will screen all studies for eligibility, of which 25% will be double-screened. Data will be extracted and summarized in a narrative synthesis. Risk of bias will be assessed using the Cochrane Revised Risk of Bias Tool. Results As of December 2021, the title and abstract screening of 3216 articles was completed, and the full-text review was underway. The systematic review is expected to be completed in 2022. Conclusions This systematic review will provide an in-depth understanding of effective eHealth interventions targeting poor diet, alcohol use, tobacco smoking, and vaping among adolescents living in geographically remote or lower socioeconomic areas and the factors that contribute to their effectiveness. This in turn will provide critical knowledge to improve future interventions delivered to these populations. Abstract
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive analytical detection technique that provides unique chemical and structural information on target molecules. Here, simultaneous extraction and SERS detection of nicotine for the rapid and reliable identification of nicotine released from snus products were performed based on a nano-Au assembly hierarchy structure in the capillary. Based on this strategy, the time evolution of the concentrations of nicotine released from the snus products was measured. Through comparison of the intensities of the spectral peaks of the symmetrical breathing of the pyridine moiety of nicotine molecules, with the prolongation of time, the concentration of nicotine released decreased significantly, which is helpful for establishing a method for the rapid evaluation of the processing and selection of excipients of snus products, and provides a new idea for further study of the production of snus pouches and related tobacco products. Moreover, based on data fitting, it can be calculated that the concentration of nicotine in the extraction presented an obvious quadratic relationship with time, and the release of most of the nicotine in the snus pouch, which is held through the gums and palate, was basically completed after ∼15 min. Such destruction-free simultaneous measurements of snus products are opening up new perspectives for further research about the impact of nicotinoids on smokers' health and cessation programs.

Abstract
Introduction This study examines correlates of lifetime (ie, ever vaped) and past month vape use among students aged 17 to 19 years, 20 to 25 years, and 26+ years from Western University in London, Ontario. The secondary objective is to assess lifetime and past month vape use among students not of legal age to purchase vaping products in Ontario (ie, those 17 to 18 years only). Methods Using Qualtrics, a cross-sectional survey was sent via email to all students at Western University (N = 38 442), assessing their current and past risk-taking behaviors, mental health, sociodemographic characteristics, as well as questions pertaining to their family structure and socioeconomic background during childhood. Students were asked if they had ever vaped in their lifetime and about past month vape use. Logistic regression models were used to assess correlates of lifetime and past month vape use. Results The sample consisted of 2626 university students. Compared to those ages 26+ years, teenage university students were 10 times more likely to have vaped in the past month and males were twice as likely as females to have vaped. Alcohol use doubled the odds of vaping in the past month, whereas cigarette, cannabis, or cocaine use approximately tripled the odds. Students who reported many sexual partners were far more likely to have vaped in the past month. Conclusion Vape use is more common among teenage university students, males, those who drink alcohol, smoke, use cannabis or cocaine, and who report many sexual partners.
