Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for maintaining human health, for example, plays a crucial role in preventing aging-related diseases. However, most studies on the health effects of Se among the community middle-aged and elderly have been observational or the health indices were single, and the related study among the Chinese population is limited. Additionally, China is recognized as among the countries facing a significant deficiency in Se, and Se contents in the human body may decrease with age. Therefore, a two-step study was conducted to explore the health effects of Se exposure and supplementation among such populations in China. Firstly, a retrospective cohort study was conducted to compare the health outcomes between such populations residing in Se-rich regions and non-Se-rich regions, involving a total of 102 subjects, with 51 residing in Se-rich regions and 51 in non-Se-rich regions. The hair-Se (H-Se) contents, serum-Se (S-Se) contents, and total cholesterol of subjects from Se-rich regions were significantly higher than their counterparts. Notably, significant positive associations were observed between S-Se and lipids. Secondly, a before-after self-control Se supplementation study among subjects residing in non-Se-rich regions was conducted. A total of 40 subjects administered Se tablets orally for 30 days, with Se of 120 μg/day. The results showed significant increases in H-Se and S-Se. Se supplementation also exhibited positive effects on alanine aminotransferase, homocysteine, and fasting glucose; however, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol significantly decreased. Overall, the community middle-aged and elderly residing in Se-rich regions or receiving quantitative Se supplementation could effectively improve Se contents in bodies and certain health indices, excluding lipids. These improvements encompass liver function, cardiovascular health, and glucose metabolism. These findings enhance our understanding of how Se impacts the health of the middle-aged and elderly, emphasizing the significance of targeted interventions for such populations in non-Se-rich regions. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Manganese (Mn), a vital element in energy metabolism, is predominantly stored in skeletal muscles and plays a crucial role in muscle function and strength. Patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) often experience muscle wasting due to metabolic disruption and inflammation. This study aimed to explore the relationship between blood Mn levels and sarcopenia in a patient population. METHODS In this multicenter cross-sectional study, conducted from March 2021 to March 2022, 386 patients on MHD from three medical centers were included. Blood Mn levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and body composition was assessed post-dialysis using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Grip strength was measured using a digital dynamometer. The patients were categorized into groups with and without sarcopenia. Using a generalized additive model to fit a smooth curve, we employed a generalized linear model to identify the optimal inflection point and explore the threshold effect after discovering a segmented relationship. Subsequently, a binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between blood manganese levels and the risk of sarcopenia, with adjustments made for potential confounding factors. RESULTS A negative correlation was observed between blood Mn levels and sarcopenia-related parameters (Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass Index and grip strength) in Spearman's correlation analysis (both P < 0.05). After adjusting for confounding factors, a nonlinear association was identified. When blood Mn was ≤ 10.6 μg/L, the increase in sarcopenia was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conversely, when blood Mn exceeded 10.6 μg/L, each 1 μg/L increase raised the risk of sarcopenia by 0.1 times. Considering confounders, multivariate binary logistic regression confirmed an independent association between elevated blood Mn levels and sarcopenia. CONCLUSION This study revealed an independent association between elevated blood Mn levels (> 10.6 μg/L) and sarcopenia in patients undergoing MHD. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding the Mn metabolism in the context of muscle health in this patient population. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and potential interventions for mitigating sarcopenia in patients with elevated blood Mn levels undergoing MHD.

Abstract
Emerging evidence expands on a close connection between trace elements and muscular abnormalities, mostly focusing on sarcopenia. We hypothesized an association between concentrations of serum trace elements and myosteatosis, given that myosteatosis has a more pronounced clinical implication relative to sarcopenia, but there is a paucity of data in patients with cirrhosis. Consecutive patients were hospitalized for cirrhosis-associated complications. Serum trace elements (zinc, copper, manganese [Mn], magnesium, calcium, and iron) were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The presence of myosteatosis was defined according to computed tomography-demarcated intramuscular adipose tissue content. In total, the 295 patients with cirrhosis analyzed had a median age of 63 years and 53.6% were male. Among them, 42 patients presented with myosteatosis (14.2%) and concomitant higher Model for End-stage Liver Disease-Sodium and triglyceride concentrations and lower neutrophil counts and serum Mn concentrations (all P < .05). No differences were found regarding other 5 trace elements in patients with versus without myosteatosis. The median serum Mn concentrations were 1.16 µg/L, and this population was categorized into high-Mn and low-Mn groups. The proportion of myosteatosis was significantly lower in high-Mn group than that in low-Mn group (8.1% vs 20.4%, P < .001). Univariable binary logistic regression indicated that low Mn was associated with myosteatosis (odds ratio, 2.906; 95% confidence interval, 1.424-5.932; P = .003) in the context of cirrhosis. This result was validated according to multivariable analysis by adjusting for confounding factors. In conclusion, low serum Mn can be predictive of myosteatosis, a novel muscular abnormality representing more clinical relevance and close relation to inferior outcomes among cirrhosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium is an essential trace element with an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity that has been associated in experimental studies with beneficial effects on appetite control, the regulation of the gut microbiota, and control of the anabolic-catabolic balance. The main aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between circulating selenium concentrations and the risk of developing undernutrition in older adults. METHODS This was a cohort study with 1398 well-nourished community-dwelling individuals aged ≥ 65 years residing in Spain in 2017, who were followed for a mean of 2.3 years. Whole blood selenium was measured at baseline using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Undernutrition was assessed at baseline and at follow-up, and defined as having at least one of the three GLIM phenotypic criteria (involuntary weight loss, a low body mass index, and a reduced muscle mass) and at least one of the two etiologic criteria (reduced food consumption or nutrient assimilation and inflammation/disease burden). RESULTS During the follow-up, 142 participants (11%) developed moderate undernutrition and 113 (8.8%) severe undernutrition. The standardized relative risks of moderate and severe undernutrition at the 75th percentile of Se levels versus the 25th were 0.90 and 0.70, respectively. In dose-response analyses, the risk of severe undernutrition decreased linearly with increasing selenium concentrations. This association was independent of protein intake or diet quality and was stronger among participants with a diagnosis of a musculoskeletal disorder. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that an adequate dietary selenium status is needed to prevent undernutrition in older adults. Also, this may open the door for clinical trials with selenium supplementation, at doses considered as safe, to prevent undernutrition.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common chronic diseases in the elderly population and is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow obstruction. During COPD progression, a variety of pulmonary and extrapulmonary complications develop, with sarcopenia being one of the most common extrapulmonary complications. Factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of coexisting COPD and sarcopenia include systemic inflammation, hypoxia, hypercapnia, oxidative stress, protein metabolic imbalance, and myocyte mitochondrial dysfunction. These factors, individually or in concert, affect muscle function, resulting in decreased muscle mass and strength. The occurrence of sarcopenia severely affects the quality of life of patients with COPD, resulting in increased readmission rates, longer hospital admission, and higher mortality. In recent years, studies have found that oral supplementation with protein, micronutrients, fat, or a combination of nutritional supplements can improve the muscle strength and physical performance of these patients; some studies have also elucidated the possible underlying mechanisms. This review aimed to elucidate the role of nutrition among patients with coexisting COPD and sarcopenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aims to reevaluate the role of minerals on muscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, and the prevalence of sarcopenia in community-dwelling and institutionalized older adults. DESIGN Systematic review. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS In March 2022, a systematic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Sciences using predefined search terms. Original studies on dietary mineral intake or mineral serum blood concentrations on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance or the prevalence of sarcopenia in older adults (average age ≥65 years) were included. METHODS Eligibility screening and data extraction was performed by 2 independent reviewers. Quality assessment was performed with the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Exposure (ROBINS-E) tool. RESULTS From the 15,622 identified articles, a total of 45 studies were included in the review, mainly being cross-sectional and observational studies. Moderate quality of evidence showed that selenium (n = 8) and magnesium (n = 7) were significantly associated with muscle mass, strength, and physical performance as well as the prevalence of sarcopenia. For calcium and zinc, no association could be found. For potassium, iron, sodium, and phosphorus, the association with sarcopenic outcomes remains unclear as not enough studies could be included or were nonconclusive (low quality of evidence). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS This systematic review shows a potential role for selenium and magnesium on the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia in older adults. More randomized controlled trials are warranted to determine the impact of minerals on sarcopenia in older adults.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element to maintain good health. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence of selenium deficiency and its effect on overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Patients who underwent serum selenium level measurement between January 2021 and April 2022 were enrolled. The factors associated with selenium deficiency (≤10 µg/dL) and the association between selenium deficiency and OHE were analyzed. Among 98 eligible patients, 24% were observed to have selenium deficiency, with a median serum selenium level of 11.8 µg/dL. The serum selenium levels were significantly lower in patients with cirrhosis than in those with chronic hepatitis (10.9 µg/dL vs. 12.4 µg/dL; p = 0.03). The serum selenium levels were negatively correlated with mac-2 binding protein glycan isomer, the FIB-4 index, albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score, and Child-Pugh score. The ALBI score remained significantly associated with selenium deficiency (odds ratio, 3.23; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.56-6.67). During a median follow-up period of 2.9 months, nine patients experienced OHE. Selenium deficiency was associated with OHE (hazard ratio, 12.75; 95% CI, 2.54-70.22). Selenium deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with CLD and is associated with an increased risk of OHE development.

Abstract
BackgroundThe Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), a composite score of multiple dietary antioxidants (including vitamin A, C, and E, selenium, zinc, and carotenoids), represents an individual’s comprehensive dietary antioxidant intake profile. CDAI was developed based on its combined effect on pro-inflammatory markers Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory effects of Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), which are associated with many health outcomes, including depression, all-cause mortality, colorectal cancer, etc. Handgrip strength is used as a simple measure of muscle strength, not only is it highly correlated with overall muscle strength, but also serves as a diagnostic tool for many adverse health outcomes, including sarcopenia and frailty syndromes.PurposeThe association between CDAI and Handgrip strength (HGS) is currently unclear. This study investigated the association between CDAI (including its components) and HGS in 6,019 American adults.MethodThe research data were selected from the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES), and a total of 6,019 American adults were screened and included. A weighted generalized linear regression model was used to evaluate CDAI (including its components) and HGS.Results(1) CDAI was significantly positively correlated with HGS (β = 0.009, 0.005∼0.013, P < 0.001), and the trend test showed that compared with the lowest quartile of CDAI, the highest quartile of CDAI was positively correlated with HGS (β = 0.084, 0.042∼0.126, P = 0.002) and significant in trend test (P for trend < 0.0100). Gender subgroup analysis showed that male CDAI was significantly positively correlated with HGS (β = 0.015, 0.007∼0.023, P = 0.002), and the trend test showed that compared with the lowest quartile of CDAI, the highest quartile of CDAI was positively correlated with HGS (β = 0.131, 0.049∼0.213, P = 0.006) and the trend test was significant (P for trend < 0.0100). There was no correlation between female CDAI and HGS, and the trend test was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). (2) The intake of dietary vitamin E, Zinc and Selenium showed a significant positive correlation with HGS (β = 0.004, 0.002∼0.007, P = 0.006; β = 0.007, 0.004∼0.009, P < 0.001; β = 0.001, 0.001∼0.001, P < 0.001), vitamin A, vitamin C and carotenoid were significantly associated with HGS in the Crude Model, but this significant association disappeared in the complete model with the increase of control variables. Gender subgroup analysis showed that in model 3, male dietary intake levels of vitamin E, Zinc, and Selenium were significantly positively correlated with HGS (β = 0.005, 0.002∼0.009, P = 0.011; β = 0.007, 0.004∼0.011, P = 0.001; β = 0.001, 0.001∼0.001, P = 0.004), the rest of the indicators had no significant correlation with HGS. Among the female subjects, dietary zinc intake was significantly positively correlated with HGS (β = 0.005, 0.001∼0.008, P = 0.008), and there was no significant correlation between other indicators and HGS (P > 0.05).ConclusionThere was an association between the CDAI and HGS, but there was a gender difference, and there was an association between the CDAI and HGS in male, but the association was not significant in female. Intake of the dietary antioxidants vitamin E, selenium, and zinc was associated with HGS in male, but only zinc was associated with HGS among dietary antioxidants in female.

Abstract
Sarcopenia, characterized by loss of muscle mass and strength, is common in advanced old age but can be accelerated by chronic disease, malnutrition and physical inactivity. Early initiation of intervention to achieve and maintain a higher peak muscle mass and strength may allow for prevention or delay of sarcopenia and facilitate independent living even in old age. In this context, malnutrition, a significant contributor to sarcopenia, is often overlooked among the Indian population. Maintenance of an optimal energy and protein balance with adequate physical activity level is essential to preserve physical function in the aging population. However, research on the role of micronutrients in muscle maintenance, is still in its infancy. This narrative review, therefore, aims to explore the current status of International and Indian research on the role of nutrition in sarcopenia mitigation and the way forward.

Abstract
Abstract
This review summarizes the evidence for the management of sarcopenia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in terms of drugs, exercise, and nutrition. Sarcopenia is a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength or physical function. The prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with RA is higher than that in the general population. The treatment and management of sarcopenia in patients with RA are clinically important for long-term prognosis. One of the mechanisms of muscle metabolism is the pro-inflammatory cytokine pathway, which involves tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6), and is a common pathway in the pathogenesis of RA. Thus, TNF-α and IL-6 inhibitors may play a potential role in controlling sarcopenia. In exercise therapy, a combination of moderate resistance and aerobic exercise may be effective in improving muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical function; however, intense exercise may exacerbate the inflammatory response in RA. Regarding nutrition, protein intake is generally considered beneficial, but other nutrients such as vitamin D and carotenoids have also been studied. Overall, there remains a lack of concrete evidence on sarcopenia treatment and management in patients with RA from any perspective; more longitudinal and intervention studies are needed in the future.

Abstract
Background Iron deficiency or overload may contribute to complications associated with diseases, but the link between iron status and skeletal muscle disorder is poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum iron status, reflected by serum ferritin concentration, and muscle mass in U.S. adults. Methods We utilized data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015-2018 for analysis. Data on serum ferritin, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), body mass index (BMI) and confounding factors were extracted and analyzed. Multivariate linear regression analyses and smooth curve fittings were employed to investigate the association between serum ferritin and muscle mass. Subgroup analysis based on iron status, age, gender and race were performed. Results A total of 2,078 participants were included, and divided into iron deficiency (n = 225), normal iron status (n = 1,366), and iron overload (n = 487) groups. Participants with iron overload had significantly lower ASM and appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) (ASM: 19.329 ± 4.879, ASMI: 0.709 ± 0.138) compared to those with iron deficiency (ASM: 22.660 ± 6.789, ASMI: 0.803 ± 0.206) and normal iron status (ASM: 22.235 ± 6.167, ASMI: 0.807 ± 0.201). The serum ferritin was negatively linked with muscle mass after adjusting for potential confounders (β = −0.0001, 95% CI: −0.0001, −0.0000). When stratified by iron status, the trend test between them remained significant (P for trend: 0.008). Furthermore, subgroup analysis identified a stronger association in men (β = −0.0001, 95% CI: −0.0002, −0.0001), age ≥ 40 years (β = −0.0001, 95% CI: −0.0002, −0.0000), non-Hispanic black (β = −0.0002, 95% CI: −0.0003, −0.0001) and other races (β = −0.0002, 95% CI: −0.0003, −0.0000). Conclusions Our study revealed an inverse relationship between serum iron status and muscle mass in adults. This finding improves our understanding of the impact of serum iron status on muscle mass, and sheds new light on the prevention and treatment of muscle loss.

Abstract
Due to the multifactorial pathogenesis of sarcopenia, it is crucial to identify biomarkers that are risk factors for sarcopenia, and which therefore have a prognostic function. Aim: This narrative review aims to define a set of biomarkers associated with nutrition and sarcopenia. These biomarkers could contribute to individualized monitoring and enable preventive and therapeutic methods. Methods: Two electronic databases, PubMed and Google Scholar, were used. The search strategy was based on a controlled vocabulary (MeSH) and includes studies published up to February 2022. Discussion: Higher levels of serum uric acid are associated with higher handgrip strength and better muscle function in elderly people and, thus, may slow the progression of sarcopenia. Leptin, an adipokine secreted by adipose tissue, promotes the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which in turn lead to sarcopenia. This makes leptin a significant indirect biomarker for physical disability and sarcopenic obesity. Additionally, creatinine is a reliable biomarker for muscle mass status because of its easy accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Vitamin D status acts as a useful biomarker for predicting total mortality, hip fractures, early death, and the development of sarcopenia. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in dietary antioxidants and their effects on age-related losses of muscle mass and function. On the other hand, 3-Methylhistidine is a valuable biomarker for detecting increased muscle catabolism, as it is excreted through urine during muscle degradation. In addition, IGF-1, whose concentration in plasma is stimulated by food intake, is associated with the loss of skeletal muscle mass, which probably plays a crucial role in the progression of sarcopenia. Conclusions: Many nutritional biomarkers were found to be associated with sarcopenia, and can therefore be used as prognostic indexes and risk factors. Nutrition plays an important role in the prevention and management of sarcopenia, affecting muscle mass, strength, and function in elderly people.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an important microelement with numerous positive effects on human health and diseases. It is important to specify that the status and consumption of Se are for a specific community as the levels of Se are extremely unpredictable between different populations and regions. Our existing paper was based on the impacts of Se on human health and disease along with data on the Se levels in Middle Eastern countries. Overall, the findings of this comprehensive review show that the consumption and levels of Se are inadequate in Middle Eastern nations. Such findings, together with the growing awareness of the importance of Se to general health, require further work primarily on creating an acceptable range of blood Se concentration or other measures to determine optimal Se consumption and, consequently, to guarantee adequate Se supplementation in populations at high risk of low Se intake.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Selenium is a key component in multiple enzyme systems, and dialysis patients with lower levels have been reported to have increased mortality. Low selenium levels were commonly reported in historic hemodialysis patients, but not in recent studies. There have been very few studies in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, and with the increasing age and frailty of our PD population we wished to review factors associated with lower selenium in PD patients. DESIGN & METHODS We retrospectively reviewed plasma selenium, normal laboratory >0.8 umol/L, measurements from a cohort of PD patients, attending for routine peritoneal membrane assessments, along with measurement of dialysis adequacy (Kt/Vurea), and normalized nitrogen appearance rate (nPNA) and bioimpedance measured extracellular water (ECW)/total body water (TBW), and skeletal muscle mass indexed for height (SMMI). RESULTS The median plasma selenium was 0.84 (IQR-0.72-1.01) umol/L in 406 PD patients, 61.1 % male, mean age 59.0 ± 15.5 years, 44.9 % diabetic with 15.8 % designated as clinically frail (CFS). 41.4 % had selenium deficiency (<0.8 umol/L), and was more common with increasing CFS (χ2-6.8, p < 0.009), comorbidity grade(χ2-26.74, p < 0.001).Plasma selenium correlated with serum total protein (TP) (r = 0.352), albumin (r = 0.358), nPNA (r = 0.263), and negatively with ECW/TBW (r= -0.321) all p < 0.001, and positively with SMMI (rho = 0.109, p = 0.03). On multivariable analysis selenium was independently associated with TP (β 0.799 ± 0.15,95 % confidence limits (95CL) (0.505-1.093), p=<0.001), and negatively with C reactive protein (CRP) (β -0.02 ± 0.01, (95CL -0.047 to -0.005) p = 0.01), and ECW/TBW (β -1.499 ± 0.42 (95CL -2.33 to -0.666) p=<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Compared to recent studies in hemodialysis patients, we report a 41 % prevalence for low selenium levels. Plasma selenium was positively associated with total serum protein, and negatively with CRP and ECW/TBW. Thus, lower selenium concentrations were linked to reduced dietary protein intake, and increasing frailty, inflammation and ECW/TBW ratios.

Abstract
Objectives Previous observational studies have suggested associations between concentrations of several circulating micronutrients and sarcopenia. However, the causality inferred from those studies was subjected to residual confounding and reverse causation. Therefore, we aimed to examine the causal effects of the levels of genetically predicted serum micronutrients on sarcopenia. Methods Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were chosen from large-scale genome-wide association studies of participants only with European descent and were used as genetic instruments for the levels of 10 serum micronutrients (calcium, magnesium, selenium, copper, iron, zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E). Sarcopenia was defined by referencing to the 2019 definition given by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP). A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was carried out to examine the associations between the levels of genetically predicted serum micronutrients and the risk of sarcopenia. Then, sensitivity analyses (including weighted median, MR-Egger and leave-one-out sensitivity analyses) were performed to evaluate the robustness of study findings. The estimates were presented as odds ratio (OR) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) per one standard deviation (SD) increase in the exposures. Results A total of 378,635 UK Biobank participants, including 572 participants who were identified with sarcopenia, were included in this study. The iron status was shown to have a clear effect on the risk of sarcopenia based on MR analyses. The per one SD increment in the genetically-determined serum iron level corresponded to a 53% increase in the risk of sarcopenia (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.31-1.78, P = 0.001). The exclusion of SNPs of the circulating iron level (i.e., rs1799945 SNP, rs1800562 SNP or rs855791 SNP) did not attenuate the magnitude of the signal in MR analysis. There was little evidence supporting the associations between other remaining micronutrients and sarcopenia. Conclusions An increased risk of sarcopenia was observed with a genetically higher concentration of iron, suggesting that iron may play a role in the occurrence or development of sarcopenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The association between dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQS) and handgrip strength (HS) and handgrip endurance (HE) is still unclear. We aimed to investigate whether adherence to dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQS) is associated with handgrip strength (HS) and handgrip endurance (HE) amongst adults in Tehran. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 270 (43.7% males, mean age 37 years and 56.3% females, mean age 35 years) apparently healthy adult subjects (53.2% were married) selected from different parts of Tehran, Iran. Dietary intake was assessed using a 168-item validated food frequency questionnaire. DAQS was calculated using antioxidant-nutrient intake. Body composition was measured using a body composition analyser. Handgrip strength and endurance were measured by a digital handgrip dynamometer. Relative muscle strength was expressed as the ratio of handgrip strength by body mass index (BMI). RESULTS The results showed that DAQs had no significant association with HS (P = .67, adjusted R2 = .60) and HE (P = .19, adjusted R2 = .08) after adjusting for potential confounders. However, a significant positive association was found between selenium intake and HE even after adjusting for potential confounders (P = .01, adjusted R2 = .10). After controlling for potential confounders no differences in the mean of HS (P = .29) and also HE (P = .61) amongst tertiles of DAQS was found. Positive linear association was found between vitamin C (P = .02, adjusted R2 = .53) and vitamin E (P = .03, adjusted R2 = .55) intake with relative muscle strength. CONCLUSION Our results revealed that no significant association between DAQS and HE and HS. It was found that more intake of selenium was positively linked to HE. Dietary intake of vitamin C and vitamin E are associated with higher relative muscle strength. It is evident that more prospective studies are needed to confirm the veracity of our results.

Abstract
Background Selenium (Se) is a trace element with a narrow safety margin. Objectives To evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal dose-response association between Se exposure and measures of impaired physical function and disability in older adults. Design NHANES 2011–2014 cross-sectional (US, n = 1733, age ≥60 years) and Seniors-ENRICA-2 2017–2019 cross-sectional and longitudinal (Spain, n = 2548 and 1741, respectively, age ≥65 years) data were analyzed. Whole blood and serum Se levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Lower-extremity performance was assessed with the Short Physical Performance Battery, and muscle weakness with a dynamometer. Incident mobility and agility limitations, and disability in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) were ascertained with standardized questionnaires. Analyses were adjusted for relevant confounders, including physical activity. Results across studies were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Results Meta-analyzed odds ratios (95% confidence interval) per log2 increase in whole blood Se were 0.54 (0.32; 0.76) for weakness, 0.59 (0.34; 0.83) for impaired lower-extremity performance, 0.48 (0.31; 0.68) for mobility limitations, 0.71 (0.45; 0.97) for agility limitations, and 0.34 (0.12; 0.56) for disability in at least one IADL. Analyses for serum Se in NHANES showed similar results. Findings suggest the inverse association with grip strength is progressive below 140 μg/L (p-value for non-linear trend in the Seniors-ENRICA-2 study = 0.13), and above 140 μg/L (p-value for non-linear trend in NHANES = 0.11). In the Seniors-ENRICA-2 cohort, with a 2.2 year follow-up period, a doubling in baseline Se levels were associated with a lower incidence of weakness [odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 0.45 (0.22; 0.91)], impaired lower-extremity performance [0.63 (0.32; 1.23)], mobility [0.43 (0.21; 0.91)] and agility [0.38 (0.18; 0.78)] limitations. Discussion In US and Spanish older adults, Se concentrations were inversely associated with physical function limitations. Further studies are needed to elucidate underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Essential trace elements play crucial roles in the maintenance of health, since they are involved in many metabolic pathways. A deficiency or an excess of some trace elements, including zinc, selenium, iron, and copper, frequently causes these metabolic disorders such as impaired glucose tolerance and dyslipidemia. The liver largely regulates most of the metabolism of trace elements, and accordingly, an impairment of liver functions can result in numerous metabolic disorders. The administration or depletion of these trace elements can improve such metabolic disorders and liver dysfunction. Recent advances in molecular biological techniques have helped to elucidate the putative mechanisms by which liver disorders evoke metabolic abnormalities that are due to deficiencies or excesses of these trace elements. A genome-wide association study revealed that a genetic polymorphism affected the metabolism of a specific trace element. Gut dysbiosis was also responsible for impairment of the metabolism of a trace element. This review focuses on the current trends of four trace elements in chronic liver diseases, including chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and autoimmune liver diseases. The novel mechanisms by which the trace elements participated in the pathogenesis of the chronic liver diseases are also mentioned.

Abstract
Background: Selenium is a trace element essential for health. Severe selenium deficiencies are associated with poor musculoskeletal (MSK) function. However, the effects of moderate deficiency on MSK function, especially in older adults, is unclear. Objectives: To determine the associations between selenium intake and MSK function in very old adults. Methods: Selenium intake at baseline and, hand-grip strength (HGS) and timed-up-and-go (TUG) at four phases over 5 years, were available in 791 participants in the Newcastle 85+ Study, a community-based, longitudinal cohort of ≥85 year old individuals. We investigated relationships between selenium intake and HGS and TUG in cross-sectional analyses at baseline using multivariate analyses and, prospectively using linear mixed models to explore HGS and TUG changes over 5 years in association with baseline selenium intake. Results: At baseline, 53% of participants had selenium intakes that were classified as low. These individuals had 2.80 kg lower HGS and were 2.30 s slower performing the TUG, cross-sectionally. In multivariate, baseline analyses, selenium intake had no significant impact on HGS or TUG. Selenium intake had no significant effect on MSK function, prospectively. Conclusion: Low selenium intake is common among very old adults and, in cross-sectional analyses, is associated with poorer MSK function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been suggested that a balanced nutritional intake may be useful in preventing or even reversing sarcopenia. AIM To describe cross-sectional associations between dietary nutrient intake and sarcopenia. METHODS Subjects recruited from the SarcoPhAge study population completed a food frequency questionnaire. The micronutrient and macronutrient intake was evaluated in both sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic participants. The Nutritional Belgian Recommendations of 2016 were used, i.e., adequate intake and estimated average requirement (EAR). For micronutrients, the prevalence of insufficient intake was estimated as the proportion of subjects whose intake was below the EAR. RESULTS A total of 331 subjects (mean age of 74.8 ± 5.9 years, 58.9% women) had complete data and were included in this study. Among them, 51 were diagnosed with sarcopenia (15.4%). In the fully adjusted model, analyses revealed that sarcopenic subjects consumed significantly lower amounts of two macronutrients (proteins, lipids) and five micronutrients (potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamin K) than non-sarcopenic subjects (all p values < 0.005). A significantly increased prevalence of insufficiency was found for sarcopenic subjects compared to non-sarcopenic subjects for potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium and vitamins E and C (all p values < 0.005). The prevalence of sarcopenic subjects who were also below the Nutritional Belgian Recommendations for protein and lipids was significantly higher than that of non-sarcopenic subjects. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenic subjects seem to consume significantly reduced amounts of many micronutrients and macronutrients compared to non-sarcopenic subjects. These results suggest that a poorly balanced diet may be associated with sarcopenia and poor musculoskeletal health, although prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Method: an integrative systematic review based on the PRISMA recommendations was carried out, using articles published from 2012 to March 2017 in the PubMED, SciELO, Virtual Health Library, CINAHL and Springer electronic databases with the following descriptors: frail elderly, sarcopenia and etiology and their synonyms. The articles identified by the initial search strategy were independently assessed by two researchers, according to the eligibility criteria, and the articles selected were evaluated for methodological quality. Results: the results of this survey show that frailty may be associated with sarcopenia, low serum vitamin D levels, anemia, subclinical hyperthyroidism in men, while the greatest evolution in women was for osteoporosis. An association between sarcopenia and advanced age was also observed, with worsening quality of life, physical-functional capacity, nutritional status and comorbidities, as well as an increased risk of death in sarcopenic elderly persons. Conclusion: this systematic review showed that low serum levels of vitamin D are associated with frailty and factors that predispose this condition. It is therefore important to monitor the serum levels of this vitamin in the elderly population, and it is suggested that new studies are carried out related to supplements of this vitamin in frail elderly persons.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inadequate intake of micronutrients with antioxidant properties is common among older adults and has been associated with higher risk of frailty, adverse functional outcome, and impaired muscle health. However, a causal relationship is less well known. The aim was to determine in old mice the impact of reduced dietary intake of vitamins A/E/B6/B12/folate, selenium, and zinc on muscle mass, oxidative capacity, strength, and physical activity (PA) over time. METHODS Twenty-one-month-old male mice were fed either AIN-93-M (control) or a diet low in micronutrients with antioxidant properties (=LOWOX-B: 50% of mouse recommended daily intake of vitamins A, E, B6, and B12, folate, selenium, and zinc) for 4 months. Muscle mass, grip strength, physical activity (PA), and general oxidative status were assessed. Moreover, muscle fatigue was measured of m. extensor digitorum longus (EDL) during an ex vivo moderate exercise protocol. Effects on oxidative capacity [succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity], muscle fibre type, number, and fibre cross-sectional area (fCSA) were assessed on m. plantaris (PL) using histochemistry. RESULTS After 2 months on the diet, bodyweight of LOWOX-B mice was lower compared with control (P < 0.0001), mainly due to lower fat mass (P < 0.0001), without significant differences in food intake. After 4 months, oxidative status of LOWOX-B mice was lower, demonstrated by decreased vitamin E plasma levels (P < 0.05) and increased liver malondialdehyde levels (P = 0.018). PA was lower in LOWOX-B mice (P < 0.001 vs. control). Muscle mass was not affected, although PL-fCSA was decreased (~16%; P = 0.028 vs. control). SDH activity and muscle fibre type distribution remained unaffected. In LOWOX-B mice, EDL force production was decreased by 49.7% at lower stimulation frequencies (P = 0.038), and fatigue resistance was diminished (P = 0.023) compared with control. CONCLUSIONS Reduced dietary intake of vitamins A, E, B6, and B12, folate, selenium, and zinc resulted in a lower oxidative capacity and has major impact on muscle health as shown by decreased force production and PA, without effects on muscle mass. The reduced fCSA in combination with similar SDH activity per fibre might explain the reduced oxidative capacity resulting in the increased fatigue after exercise in LOWOX-B mice.

Abstract
There is a growing body of evidence that links nutrition to muscle mass, strength and function in older adults, suggesting that it has an important role to play both in the prevention and management of sarcopenia. This review summarises the discussions of a working group [ESCEO working group meeting 8th September 2016] that met to review current evidence and to consider its implications for preventive and treatment strategies. The review points to the importance of 'healthier' dietary patterns that are adequate in quality in older age, to ensure sufficient intakes of protein, vitamin D, antioxidant nutrients and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. In particular, there is substantial evidence to support the roles of dietary protein and physical activity as key anabolic stimuli for muscle protein synthesis. However, much of the evidence is observational and from high-income countries. Further high-quality trials, particularly from more diverse populations, are needed to enable an understanding of dose and duration effects of individual nutrients on function, to elucidate mechanistic links, and to define optimal profiles and patterns of nutrient intake for older adults.

Abstract
Background Age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and function (sarcopenia) are associated with poor health outcomes and an economic burden on health care services. An appropriate diet and physical activity have been proposed for prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Nevertheless, the effects on medical service utilization and costs remain unclear. This study determined the effects of SMM in conjunction with diet quality and physical activity on medical service utilization and expenditure in community-dwelling older Taiwanese. Methods In total, 1337 participants from the Elderly Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (1999–2000) were enrolled. An SMM index [SMMI, calculated by dividing SMM (kg) by height (m2)] was used as the marker of sarcopenia. Participants with the lowest SMMI quartiles (<11.4 kg/m2 for men and 8.50 kg/m2 for women) comprised the high-risk group, and the remainder comprised the low-risk group. Dietary information (dietary diversity: low and high) and physical activity (low and moderate) were obtained at baseline. Annual medical service utilization and expenditure were calculated from National Health Insurance claims until December 31, 2006. Generalized linear models were used to determine the association between the SMMI and annual medical service utilization and costs in conjunction with dietary diversity or physical activity. Results After 8 follow-up years, regardless of gender, participants in the high-risk group reported significantly more hospitalization (days and expenditure) and total medical expenditure. Participants in the high-risk group who had low dietary diversity made fewer annual outpatient (14%), preventive care (19%), and dental (40%) visits, but exhibited longer hospitalization (102%) than did those who had a low SMMI and high dietary diversity. Similar patterns were observed in the corresponding medical expenditures. The findings were similar when considering physical activity. Being in the low-risk group in conjunction with having high dietary diversity or more physical activity was associated with the lowest annual adjusted mean hospitalization days with expenditure, and also total expenditure. Conclusions A lower SMMI was associated with more hospitalization days and costs. However, high dietary diversity and more physical activity can attenuate the effects of lower SMMI on medical service utilization and expenditure.
