Abstract
Lettuce, a globally consumed nutritious vegetable, is often linked to concerns regarding pesticide residues. To address this issue, we conducted field trials and utilized dynamiCROP modeling to examine the uptake, distribution, translocation, and dissipation of five pesticides (λ-cyhalothrin, difenoconazole, acetamiprid, dimethomorph, and β-cypermethrin) commonly detected in lettuce. At harvest, pesticides residues were below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) at 0.05, 0.39, 0.047, 0.72, and 0.072 mg kg-1, respectively. Simulation results elucidated distinct behaviors of the pesticides following application to lettuce foliage across various compartments. However, all pesticides exhibited a common dissipation trend, initially stabilizing or increasing before gradually declining. For all five pesticides, the largest contribution of residues on lettuce leaves came from the leaf surface during the early period after application, and from the soil in the long term. Health risk assessments indicated negligible risks associated with consuming lettuce containing these pesticides, both in the short and long term.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lettuce holds a prominent position in the year-round supply of vegetables, offering a rich array of health-beneficial substances, such as dietary fiber, phenolic compounds, lactucopicrin and lactucin. As such, its flavor has garnered increasing attention. Balancing the enhancement of beneficial compounds with the reduction of undesirable taste is a key focus of scientific research. To investigate short-term management to improve the nutritional quality and flavor of lettuce, combinations of different light intensities (200, 500 and 800 μm ol m-2 s-1) and temperatures (10 and 22 °C) were applied separately to 'Lollo Rosso' and 'Little Butter Lettuce' for 7 days before harvest. RESULTS The results obtained showed that increasing light intensity at low temperatures decreased nitrate content and increased soluble sugar, soluble protein, anthocyanin and phenolic compound content. In the case of lettuce flavor, the bitterness-related metabolites such as lactucin and lactucopicrin were reduced with high light intensity at a low temperature of 10 °C. With this combination, the fructose and glucose contents increased, significantly improving lettuce flavor. CONCLUSION Higher light intensity combined with low temperature for 7 days before harvest effectively improved the nutritional quality and flavor of lettuce, suggesting its great potential for use in horticultural practices. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In recent years, precision agriculture, driven by scientific monitoring, precise management, and efficient use of agricultural resources, has become the direction for future agricultural development. The precise identification and assessment of phenotypes, which serve as external representations of a crop's growth, development, and genetic characteristics, are crucial for the realization of precision agriculture. Applications surrounding phenotypic indices also provide significant technical support for optimizing crop cultivation management and advancing smart agriculture, contributing to the efficient and high-quality development of precision agriculture.This paper focuses on lettuce and employs common nutritional stress conditions during growth as experimental settings. By collecting RGB images throughout the lettuce's complete growth cycle, we developed a deep learning-based computational model to tackle key issues in the lettuce's growth and precisely identify and assess phenotypic indices. We discovered that some phenotypic indices, including custom ones defined in this study, are representative of the lettuce's growth status. By dynamically monitoring the changes in phenotypic traits during growth, we quantitatively analyzed the accumulation and evolution of phenotypic indices across different growth stages. On this basis, a predictive model for lettuce growth and development was trained.The model incorporates MSE, SSIM, and perceptual loss, significantly enhancing the predictive accuracy of the lettuce growth images and phenotypic indices. The model trained with the reconstructed loss function outperforms the original model, with the SSIM and PSNR improving by 1.33% and 10.32%, respectively. The model also demonstrates high accuracy in predicting lettuce phenotypic indices, with an average error less than 0.55% for geometric indices and less than 1.7% for color and texture indices. Ultimately, it achieves intelligent monitoring and management throughout the lettuce's life cycle, providing technical support for high-quality and efficient lettuce production.

Abstract
Hydroponic farming systems play an increasingly important role in the sustainable production of nutrient-rich foods. The contamination of surfaces in hydroponic fresh produce production poses risks to the food safety of crops, potentially endangering public health and causing economic losses in the industry. While sanitizers are widely used in commercial hydroponic farms, their effectiveness against human pathogens on surfaces and their impact on plant health and quality are not known. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of chemical sanitizers in eliminating Salmonella Typhimurium from inanimate surfaces in commercial hydroponic Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) systems. Further, we assessed the impact of sanitizers on the yield, quality, and nutritional value of lettuce and basil. Sanitizers (Virkon, LanXess, Pittsburgh, PA, USA; SaniDate 12.0, BioSafe Systems, East Hartford, CT, USA; KleenGrow, Pace Chemical Ltd., Delta, BC, Canada; Green Shield, United Labs Inc., St Charles, IL, USA; Zerotol, BioSafe Systems, East Hartford, CT, USA; Bleach, Pure Bright, ON, Canada) were tested against Salmonella Typhimurium inoculated on NFT surfaces (nutrient reservoir, growing channels, top covers, drain lines). The effective treatments were then tested for their impact on lettuce and basil in a split-plot experiment conducted in commercial NFT units. Crop yield, color, and nutrient content (chlorophyll and carotenoids) were measured throughout the crop life cycle. While all quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC), SaniDate 12.0 (200 ppm), Zorotol (5%), and Virkon (1%) eliminated Salmonella Typhimurium from commercial NFT surfaces, chlorine-based sanitizer treatments were statistically similar to water treatments on most surfaces. All chemical sanitizers impacted the yield, color, and nutritional value of lettuce and basil. SaniDate 12.0 (200 ppm) was the least detrimental to crops and was identified as a potential candidate for further validation in commercial hydroponic settings. The findings of this study will be translated into recommendations for the industry and will contribute to the development of future food safety guidelines and policies.

Abstract
Lettuce is a globally important cash crop, valued by consumers for its nutritional content and pleasant taste. However, there is limited research on the changes in the growth indicators of lettuce during its growth period in domestic settings. Quality assessment primarily relies on subjective evaluations, resulting in significant variability. This study focused on hydroponically grown lettuce during the rosette stage and investigated the patterns of changes in the indicators and spectral curves over time. By employing spectral preprocessing and selecting characteristic wavelengths, three models were developed to predict the indicators. The results showed that the optimal model structures were S_G-UVE-PLSR (SSC and vitamin C) and Nor-CARS-PLSR (moisture content). The PLSR models achieved prediction set correlation coefficients of 0.8648, 0.8578, and 0.8047, with residual prediction deviations of 1.9685, 1.9568, and 1.6689, respectively. The optimal models were integrated into a portable device, using real-time analysis software written in Matlab2021a, for the prediction of the physicochemical indicators of lettuce during the rosette stage. The results demonstrated prediction set correlation coefficients of 0.8215, 0.8472, and 0.7671, with root mean square errors of prediction of 0.5348, 1.5813, and 2.3347 for a sample size of 180. The small discrepancies between the predicted and actual values indicate that the developed device can meet the requirements for real-time detection.

Abstract
The neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) plays important roles in the human body, including regulatory functions, movement, memory and motivational control. The direct intake of DA is impossible as it cannot cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) efficiently. Notably, l-tyrosine works as a precursor of DA in the human brain. Herein, we report an analytical method that strongly supports the hypothesis that the intake of tyrosine (Tyr)-rich food enhances DA levels. For this analysis, citrate-coated gold-core silver-shell nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs) were synthesized. The interaction of DA with the Au@Ag NPs was investigated using multiple spectroscopic techniques, and different thermodynamic parameters were evaluated to assign the binding mechanism. Real sample analysis with Tyr-rich food was also conducted to study the effect of Tyr on DA levels. Analytical studies were performed to verify the outcomes of the present work. The limit of detection of the Au@Ag NPs-DA system for Tyr was found to be 1.64 mM. This study can contribute to development in the fields of medicine and pharmaceuticals, particularly in regard to neuromedicine. One of the major advantages of this investigation is that it will fuel research interest in the supplementation of neurotransmitters and help categorize Tyr as a dietary precursor of dopamine.

Abstract
With the growing global population and climate change, achieving food security is a pressing challenge. Vertical farming has the potential to support local food production and security. As a Total Controlled Environment Agriculture (TCEA) system, vertical farming employs LED lighting which offers opportunities to modulate light spectrum and intensity, and thus can be used to influence plant growth and phytochemical composition, including antioxidants beneficial for human health. In this study, we investigated the effect of four red-to-blue light ratios of LEDs (R:B 1, 2.5, 5 and 9) on the growth and antioxidant components in red amaranth microgreens and red lettuce. Plant growth, total phenols, betalains, anthocyanins, vitamin C and antioxidant capacity (ferric reducing antioxidant power assay) were evaluated. A higher proportion of red light resulted in biometric responses, i.e., stem elongation in red amaranth and longer leaves in red lettuce, while the increase in the blue light fraction led to the upregulation of antioxidative components, especially total phenols, betalains (in red amaranth) and anthocyanins (in red lettuce). The antioxidant capacity of both crops was strongly positively correlated with the levels of these phytochemicals. Optimizing the red-to-blue ratio in LED lighting could be effective in promoting antioxidant-rich crops with potential health benefits for consumers.

Abstract
Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs), as emerging green solvents, can efficiently extract natural products from natural resources. However, studies on the extraction of phenolic compounds from celtuce (Lactuca sativa var. augustana) leaves (CLs) by NADESs are still lacking. This study screened the NADES L-proline-lactic acid (Pr-LA), combined it with ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) to extract phenolic compounds from CLs, and conducted a comparative study on the extraction effect with traditional extraction solvents. Both SEM and FT-IR confirmed that Pr-LA can enhance the degree of fragmentation of cell structures and improve the extraction rate of phenolic compounds. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that Pr-LA can improve the solubility of phenolic compounds and has stronger hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions with phenolic compounds. Single-factor and Box-Behnken experiments optimized the process parameters for the extraction of phenolic compounds from CLs. The second-order kinetic model describes the extraction process of phenolic compounds from CLs under optimal process parameters and provides theoretical guidance for actual industrial production. This study not only provides an efficient and green method for extracting phenolic compounds from CLs but also clarifies the mechanism of improved extraction efficiency, which provides a basis for research on the NADES extraction mechanism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bacterial contamination of produce is a concern in indoor farming due to close plant spacing, recycling irrigation, warm temperatures, and high relative humidity during production. Cultivars that inherently resist contamination and photo-sanitization using ultraviolet (UV) radiation during the production phase can reduce bacterial contamination. However, there is limited information to support their use in indoor farming. RESULTS Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cultivars with varying plant architectures grown in a custom-built indoor farm exhibited differences in E. coli O157:H7 survival after inoculation. The survival of E. coli O157:H7 was lowest in the leaf cultivar (open architecture) and highest in the romaine and oakleaf cultivars (compact architecture). Of the different UV wavelengths that were tested (UV-A, UV-A + B, UV-A + C), UV A + C at an intensity of 54.5 μmol m-2 s-1 (with 3.5 μmol m-2 s-1 of UV-C), provided for 15 min every day, was found to be most efficacious in reducing the E. coli O157:H7 survival on romaine lettuce with no negative effects on plant growth and quality. CONCLUSION Contamination of E. coli O157:H7 on lettuce plants can be reduced and the food safety levels in indoor farms can be increased by selecting cultivars with an open leaf architecture coupled with photo-sanitization using low and frequent exposure to UV A + C radiation. © 2024 The Authors. Abstract
In controlled environment agriculture, customized light treatments using light-emitting diodes are crucial to improving crop yield and quality. Red (R; 600-700 nm) and blue light (B; 400-500 nm) are two major parts of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), often preferred in crop production. Far-red radiation (FR; 700-800 nm), although not part of PAR, can also affect photosynthesis and can have profound effects on a range of morphological and physiological processes. However, interactions between different red and blue light ratios (R:B) and FR on promoting yield and nutritionally relevant compounds in crops remain unknown. Here, lettuce was grown at 200 µmol m-2 s-1 PAR under three different R:B ratios: R:B87.5:12.5 (12.5% blue), R:B75:25 (25% blue), and R:B60:40 (40% blue) without FR. Each treatment was also performed with supplementary FR (50 µmol m-2 s-1; R:B87.5:12.5+FR, R:B75:25+FR, and R:B60:40+FR). White light with and without FR (W and W+FR) were used as control treatments comprising of 72.5% red, 19% green, and 8.5% blue light. Increasing the R:B ratio from R:B87.5:12.5 to R:B60:40, there was a decrease in fresh weight (20%) and carbohydrate concentration (48% reduction in both sugars and starch), whereas pigment concentrations (anthocyanins, chlorophyll, and carotenoids), phenolic compounds, and various minerals all increased. These results contrasted the effects of FR supplementation in the growth spectra; when supplementing FR to different R:B backgrounds, we found a significant increase in plant fresh weight, dry weight, total soluble sugars, and starch. Additionally, FR decreased concentrations of anthocyanins, phenolic compounds, and various minerals. Although blue light and FR effects appear to directly contrast, blue and FR light did not have interactive effects together when considering plant growth, morphology, and nutritional content. Therefore, the individual benefits of increased blue light fraction and supplementary FR radiation can be combined and used cooperatively to produce crops of desired quality: adding FR increases growth and carbohydrate concentration while increasing the blue fraction increases nutritional value.

Abstract
The enhancement of the plant seed yield and quality represents the basis of the successful productivity of the deriving crop. The effect of single and combined foliar treatments of lettuce plants with sodium selenate and garlic bulb extract on seed yield and quality and on mature plant biochemical characteristics was investigated using four lettuce cultivars (Bouquet, Picnic, Moskovsky parnikovy and Cavalier). The seed production of plants treated with Se increased by 20-41%, compared to the untreated control plants, while the augmentation was as much as 10-23% and 17-27% under garlic extract and the joint application of Se and garlic, respectively. Garlic extract stimulated the accumulation of Se in lettuce seeds, which rose by 1.21-1.29 times compared to the Se-treated plants. The proline levels in lettuce seeds exceeded the corresponding values recorded in the control ones by 1.32-1.64 times in the case of the Se supply, 1.10-1.47 times upon garlic extract application and 1.09-1.31 times under the combined Se/garlic treatment. All the treatments given to lettuce plants increased the leaf weight by 1.10-1.30 times, compared to the untreated control. The seed Se levels positively correlated with the leaf weight (r = 0.621; p < 0.005), chlorophyll (r = 0.672, p < 0.002) and total antioxidant activity (AOA; r = 0.730, p < 0.001) of plants grown from these seeds. Positive correlations were also recorded between the seed proline content and lettuce plant leaf weight, chlorophyll and AOA (r = 0.868, 0.811 and 0.815, respectively, at p < 0.001). Lettuce yield was positively correlated with the leaf AOA, chlorophyll and ascorbic acid content (r = 0.942, 0.921 and 0.665, respectively, at p < 0.001). The results indicate high prospects of Na2SeO4 and garlic extract application to seed-addressed lettuce plants, to improve seed productivity and quality, as well as lettuce yield and quality.

Abstract
In regions where water is a limited resource, lettuce production can be challenging. To address this, water management strategies like deficit irrigation are used to improve water-use efficiency in agriculture. Associating this strategy with silicon (Si) application could help maintain adequate levels of agricultural production even with limited water availability. Two lettuce crop cycles were conducted in a completely randomized design, with a factorial scheme (2 × 3), with three irrigation levels (60%, 80% and 100%) of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and with and without Si application. To explore their combined effects, morphological, productive, physiological and nutritional parameters were evaluated in the crops. The results showed that deficit irrigation and Si application had a positive interaction: lettuce yield of the treatment with 80% ETc + Si was statistically similar to 100% ETc without Si in the first cycle, and the treatment with 60% ETc + Si was similar to 100% ETc without Si in the second cycle. Photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, transpiration rate and total chlorophyll content increased under water-stress conditions with Si application; in the first cycle, the treatment with 80% ETc + Si increased by 30.1%, 31.3%, 7.8%, 28.46% and 50.3% compared to the same treatment without Si, respectively. Si application in conditions of water deficit was also beneficial to obtain a cooler canopy temperature and leaves with higher relative water content. In conclusion, we found that Si applications attenuate water deficit effects and provide a strategy to ameliorate the yield and water productivity in lettuce crops, contributing to more sustainable practices in agriculture.

Abstract
This study is focused to highlight the phytochemical, nutrient content and in vitro antioxidant capacity of the wildly growing plant Calyptocarpus vialis (CV) of the Asteraceae family collected from the Garhwal region of India. Phytochemical and nutritional analysis of CV is done by qualitative and quantitative methods. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis confirmed the presence of phenols, alkanes, aliphatic primary amines, carboxylic acids, nitrile, aromatics and alcohols. Gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) revealed the presence of terpenoids, plant sterols and phenols such as phytol (14.9%), stigmasterol (10.02%), viridiflorol (4.19%), squalene (2.54%) and various other phytochemicals. The plant's study reveals the existence of numerous nutritious elements, including proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates and amino acids. It also revealed the presence of the huge amount of phenolic content ⁓13.49 g in a 100-g dried CV plant sample. The antioxidant potential of methanolic extract of CV was estimated using DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay, phosphomolybdate assay and reducing power assay. The highest percentage of antioxidant activity determined from three assays is 74 to 87% for 1 mg of dry extract. It is observed that the CV extract act as a good antioxidant when compared to other plants of the Asteraceae family even at very low concentration of the sample. Hence, CV found in the foothills of Himalayas can be further explored as a source of potent bioactive compounds and natural and economical antioxidant for biomedical and immunity-boosting applications.

Abstract
The use of biostimulants is becoming a useful tool for increasing crop productivity while enhancing nutritional quality. However, new studies are necessary to confirm that the joint application of different types of biostimulants, together with bioactive compounds, is effective and not harmful to plants. This study examined the impact of applying the biostimulant Green Leaves, comprising Macrocystis algae extract and containing a mixture of amino acids, corn steep liquor extract, calcium, and the bioactive compound glycine betaine. The effect of applying two different doses (3 and 5 mL L-1) of this biostimulant was evaluated on lettuce plants, and growth and quality parameters were analyzed along with photosynthetic efficiency, nutritional status, and nutrient efficiency parameters. The application of Green Leaves improved plant weight (25%) and leaf area and enhanced the photosynthetic rate, the accumulation of soluble sugars and proteins, and the agronomic efficiency of all essential nutrients. The 3 mL L-1 dose improved the nutritional quality of lettuce plants, improving the concentration of phenolic compounds and ascorbate and the antioxidant capacity and reducing NO3- accumulation. The 5 mL L-1 dose improved the absorption of most nutrients, especially N, which reduced the need for fertilizers, thus reducing costs and environmental impact. In short, the Green Leaves product has been identified as a useful product for obtaining higher yield and better quality.

Abstract
Cuticular waxes of plants impart tolerance to many forms of environmental stress and help shed dangerous human pathogens on edible plant parts. Although the chemical composition of waxes on a wide variety of important crops has been described, a detailed wax compositional analysis has yet to be reported for lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), one of the most widely consumed vegetables. We present herein the leaf wax content and composition of 12 genetically diverse lettuce cultivars sampled across five time points during their vegetative growth phase in the field. Mean total leaf wax amounts across all cultivars varied little over 28 days of vegetative growth, except for a notable decrease in total waxes following a major precipitation event, presumably due to wax degradation from wind and rain. All lettuce cultivars were found to contain a unique wax composition highly enriched in 22- and 24-carbon length 1-alcohols (docosanol and tetracosanol, respectively). In our report, the dominance of these shorter chain length 1-alcohols as wax constituents represents a relatively rare phenotype in plants. The ecological significance of these dominant and relatively short 1-alcohols is still unknown. Although waxes have been a target for improvement of various crops, no such work has been reported for lettuce. This study lays the groundwork for future research that aims to integrate cuticular wax characteristics of field grown plants into the larger context of lettuce breeding and cultivar development.

Abstract
Lettuce is an economically major leafy vegetable that is affected by numerous diseases. One of the most devastating diseases of lettuce is white mold caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Control methods for this fungus are limited due to the development of genetic resistance to commonly used fungicides, the large number of hosts and the long-term survival of sclerotia in soil. To elaborate a new and more sustainable approach to contain this pathogen, 1,210 Pseudomonas strains previously isolated from agricultural soils in Canada were screened for their antagonistic activity against S. sclerotiorum. Nine Pseudomonas strains showed strong in vitro inhibition in dual-culture confrontational assays. Whole genome sequencing of these strains revealed their affiliation with four phylogenomic subgroups within the Pseudomonas fluorescens group, namely Pseudomonas corrugata, Pseudomonas asplenii, Pseudomonas mandelii, and Pseudomonas protegens. The antagonistic strains harbor several genes and gene clusters involved in the production of secondary metabolites, including mycin-type and peptin-type lipopeptides, and antibiotics such as brabantamide, which may be involved in the inhibitory activity observed against S. sclerotiorum. Three strains also demonstrated significant in planta biocontrol abilities against the pathogen when either inoculated on lettuce leaves or in the growing substrate of lettuce plants grown in pots. They however did not impact S. sclerotiorum populations in the rhizosphere, suggesting that they protect lettuce plants by altering the fitness and the virulence of the pathogen rather than by directly impeding its growth. These results mark a step forward in the development of biocontrol products against S. sclerotiorum.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ultra-high pressure (UHP, 600 MPa/2 min), thermal pasteurization (TP, 95 °C/1 min) and ultra-high temperature (UHT, 115 °C/5 s) sterilization on the color, sensory evaluation, microorganisms, physicochemical characteristics and nutritional components of freshly-squeezed lettuce juice (FLJ). Results showed that three sterilization methods demonstrated desirable inactivation effects on total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold, and there were no significant changes in the main nutritional components, including ash, protein, carbohydrate and total dietary fiber. However, UHT and TP significantly affected the color of FLJ from bright green to light brown and made chlorophyll, β-carotene and vitamins (VE, VC, VK1, VB6, VB12, and folic acid) contents markedly decreased. By contrast, UHP maintained the original color, fresh-like sensory qualities, vitamins, and carotene of FLJ to the greatest extent. Our results provide a promising application of UHP in the large-scale processing of FLJ.

Abstract
Horticultural crops constantly face abiotic stress factors such as salinity, which have intensified in recent years due to accelerated climate change, significantly affecting their yields and profitability. Under these conditions, it has become necessary to implement effective and sustainable solutions to guarantee agricultural productivity and food security. The influence of BALOX®, a biostimulant of plant origin, was tested on the responses to salinity of Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia plants exposed to salt concentrations up to 150 mM NaCl, evaluating different biometric and biochemical properties after 25 days of treatment. Control plants were cultivated under the same conditions but without the biostimulant treatment. An in situ analysis of root characteristics using a non-destructive, real-time method was also performed. The salt stress treatments inhibited plant growth, reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, and increased the concentrations of Na+ and Cl- in roots and leaves while reducing those of Ca2+. BALOX® application had a positive effect because it stimulated plant growth and the level of Ca2+ and photosynthetic pigments. In addition, it reduced the content of Na+ and Cl- in the presence and the absence of salt. The biostimulant also reduced the salt-induced accumulation of stress biomarkers, such as proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Therefore, BALOX® appears to significantly reduce osmotic, ionic and oxidative stress levels in salt-treated plants. Furthermore, the analysis of the salt treatments' and the biostimulant's direct effects on roots indicated that BALOX®'s primary mechanism of action probably involves improving plant nutrition, even under severe salt stress conditions, by protecting and stimulating the root absorption zone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The phenotypic traits of leaves are the direct reflection of the agronomic traits in the growth process of leafy vegetables, which plays a vital role in the selection of high-quality leafy vegetable varieties. The current image-based phenotypic traits extraction research mainly focuses on the morphological and structural traits of plants or leaves, and there are few studies on the phenotypes of physiological traits of leaves. The current research has developed a deep learning model aimed at predicting the total chlorophyll of greenhouse lettuce directly from the full spectrum of hyperspectral images. RESULTS A CNN-based one-dimensional deep learning model with spectral attention module was utilized for the estimate of the total chlorophyll of greenhouse lettuce from the full spectrum of hyperspectral images. Experimental results demonstrate that the deep neural network with spectral attention module outperformed the existing standard approaches, including partial least squares regression (PLSR) and random forest (RF), with an average R2 of 0.746 and an average RMSE of 2.018. CONCLUSIONS This study unveils the capability of leveraging deep attention networks and hyperspectral imaging for estimating lettuce chlorophyll levels. This approach offers a convenient, non-destructive, and effective estimation method for the automatic monitoring and production management of leafy vegetables.

Abstract
Lettuce, an important leafy vegetable crop worldwide, has rich variations in plant architecture. Butterhead lettuce, a popular horticultural type, has a unique plant architecture with loose leafy heads. The genetic and molecular mechanisms for such a compact plant architecture remain unclear. In this study we constructed a segregating population through crossing a butterhead cultivar and a stem lettuce cultivar. Genetic analysis identified the LsKIPK gene, which encodes a kinase, as the candidate gene controlling butterhead plant architecture. The Lskipk gene in the butterhead parent had a nonsense mutation, leading to a partial predicted protein. CRISPR/Cas9 and complementation tests verified its functions in plant architecture. We showed that the loss of function of LsKIPK is necessary but not sufficient for the butterhead plant architecture. To identify additional genes required for butterhead lettuce, we crossed a butterhead cultivar and a crisphead cultivar, both with the mutated Lskipk gene. Genetic mapping identified a new gene encoding an ATPase contributing to butterhead plant architecture. Knockout and complementation tests showed that loss of function of LsATPase is also required for the development of butterhead plant architecture. The Lskipk Lsatpase double mutation could reduce leaf size and leaf angle, leading to butterhead plant architecture. Expression and cytology analysis indicated that the loss of function of LsKIPK and LsATPase contributed to butterhead plant architecture by regulating cell wall development, a regulatory mechanism different from that for crisphead. This study provides new gene resources and theory for the breeding of the crop ideotype.

Abstract
Lettuce is a vegetable that contributes vitamins, minerals, fibre, phenolic compounds and antioxidants to the human diet. In the search for improving production conditions and crop health, the use of microorganisms with plant growth-promoting capabilities, such as soil yeasts (PGPY), in conjunction with nanotechnology could offer sustainable development of agroecosystems. This study evaluated the synthesis of health-promoting bioactive compounds in lettuce under the application of soil yeast and an iron nanoparticle (NP-Fe2O3) encapsulated in alginate beads. Two yeast strains, Candida guillermondii and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, and a consortium of both yeasts were used in the presence and absence of Fe2O3-NPs. Phenolic compounds were identified and quantified via HPLC-ESI-Q-ToF and antioxidant activity. Ten phenolic compounds were identified, highlighting the chicoric acid isomer and two quercetin glycosides with high concentrations of up to 100 µg g-1 in treatments with C. guillermondii. Treatments with R. mucilaginosa and NPs-Fe2O3 presented an increase in antioxidant activity, mainly in TEAC, CUPRAC and DPPH activities in leaves, with significant differences between treatments. Therefore, the use of encapsulated soil yeasts is a viable alternative for application in vegetables to improve the biosynthesis and accumulation of phenolic compounds in lettuce and other crops.

Abstract
Hydroponic lettuce was prone to pest and disease problems after transplantation. Manual identification of the current growth status of each hydroponic lettuce not only consumed time and was prone to errors but also failed to meet the requirements of high-quality and efficient lettuce cultivation. In response to this issue, this paper proposed a method called YOLO-EfficientNet for identifying the growth status of hydroponic lettuce. Firstly, the video data of hydroponic lettuce were processed to obtain individual frame images. And 2240 images were selected from these frames as the image dataset A. Secondly, the YOLO-v8n object detection model was trained using image dataset A to detect the position of each hydroponic lettuce in the video data. After selecting the targets based on the predicted bounding boxes, 12,000 individual lettuce images were obtained by cropping, which served as image dataset B. Finally, the EfficientNet-v2s object classification model was trained using image dataset B to identify three growth statuses (Healthy, Diseases, and Pests) of hydroponic lettuce. The results showed that, after training image dataset A using the YOLO-v8n model, the accuracy and recall were consistently around 99%. After training image dataset B using the EfficientNet-v2s model, it achieved excellent scores of 95.78 for Val-acc, 94.68 for Test-acc, 96.02 for Recall, 96.32 for Precision, and 96.18 for F1-score. Thus, the method proposed in this paper had potential in the agricultural application of identifying and classifying the growth status in hydroponic lettuce.

Abstract
In soilless cultivation, plants are grown with nutrient solutions prepared with mineral nutrients. Beneficial microorganisms are very important in plant nutrition. However, they are not present in soilless culture systems. In this study we investigated the impact of introducing Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) as an alternative to traditional mineral fertilizer in hydroponic floating lettuce cultivation. By reducing mineral fertilizers at various ratios (20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%), and replacing them with PGPR, we observed remarkable improvements in multiple growth parameters. Applying PGPR led to significant enhancements in plant weight, leaf number, leaf area, leaf dry matter, chlorophyll content, yield, and nutrient uptake in soilles grown lettuce. Combining 80% mineral fertilizers with PGPR demonstrated a lettuce yield that did not significantly differ from the control treatment with 100% mineral fertilizers. Moreover, PGPR application improved the essential mineral concentrations and enhanced human nutritional quality, including higher levels of phenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, and total soluble solids. PGPR has potential as a sustainable substitute for synthetic mineral fertilizers in hydroponic floating lettuce cultivation, leading to environmentally friendly and nutritionally enriched farming.

Abstract
Medicinal and aromatic plants' properties, still an interesting research area, are attributed to the presence of various specialized products that possess important pharmacological activities. In the present study, six medicinal/aromatic plants (Sideritis cypria, Origanum dubium, Melissa officinalis, Mentha piperita, Thymus capitatus, and Salvia fruticosa) were evaluated for their phytochemical and nutritive composition, as well as their biological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic properties. The results obtained indicate that M. piperita was rich in proteins and minerals such as N and Mg, while S. cypria accumulated more K, Na, P, and Ca. The highest content of phenols and flavonoids was observed in M. piperita, followed by O. dubium and T. capitatus, which eventually influenced their high antioxidant capacity. NMR screening revealed the presence of (i) triterpenoids and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives in M. officinalis; (ii) terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic acid derivatives in S. fruticosa; (iii) flavonoids and phenolic acid derivatives in M. piperita; (iv) phenolic monoterpenes in O. dubium and T. capitatus; and (v) terpenoids, flavones, and phenylethanoid glycosides in S. cypria. The results of the antimicrobial activity showed that the tested samples overall had quite good antimicrobial potential. High antibacterial activity was found in O. dubium and T. capitatus, while O. dubium and S. cypria exhibited great antifungal activities. The studied species also had an important effect on the viability of female-derived and colon cancer cells. In particular, in colon cancer cells, the extracts from T. capitatus, M. officinalis, M. piperita, and S. fruticosa exhibited a stronger effect on cell viability in the more metastatic cell line at significantly lower concentrations, indicating an important therapeutic potential in targeting highly metastatic tumors. This finding is worth further investigation. The present study unveiled interesting phytochemical profiles and biological properties of the six medicinal/aromatic plants, which should be further explored, contributing to green chemistry and the possible creation of natural health products for humans' health/nutrition and additives in cosmetics.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of bio-slurry (BS) and chemical fertilizer (CF) application on the growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. Parris Iceland Cos). Field experiment consisting of six treatments (100 % BS, 75 % BS + 25 % CF, 50 % BS + 50 % CF, 25 % BS + 75 % CF, 100 % CF and the control) was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results showed that the combined application of BS and CF significantly increased lettuce yield and its constituents at p < 0.05. More specifically, the maximum plant height (31.4 cm), leaf area (4914.5 cm2), and yield (38.34 ton ha-1) were obtained with the combined application of 75 % CF and 25 % BS. Aside from that, yield and its components showed a positive correlation. Using BS alone or in combination with CF could increase lettuce yield while also potentially saving money on CF purchases. Overall, combining CF and BS in a 3:1 ratio could be an optimum rate for growing lettuce in the study area.

Abstract
The present experiment addressed the effects of foliar sprays of different iron (Fe) concentrations (mg L-1), i.e., 2.8 (Fe I), 4.2 (Fe II), and 5.6 (Fe III), as well as an ionic derivative of salicylic acid (iSal) in two doses (10 and 20 mg L-1) on lettuce yield, chlorophyll and carotenoids content, and fluorescence parameters. Chemicals were used individually and in combinations two times, 23 and 30 days after the plants were transplanted. This experiment was carried out in a climate chamber. The Fe and iSal applications generally (except Fe I iSal, 10 mg L-1; Fe I iSal, 20 mg L-1; and Fe III iSal, 20 mg L-1) did not influence the fresh and dry matter content. The concentration of chlorophylls and carotenoids was reduced for all treatments in comparison to the control (without spraying). The Fe content in leaves was promoted in the Fe-treated plants (+70% for Fe III + iSal, 10 mg L-1, and Fe I). The iSal treatment promoted the Mn content. For most combinations, the Zn and Cu accumulations, as well as the fluorescence parameters, decreased after the foliar spray applications. Overall, our study revealed the effectiveness of Fe-DTPA chelate, but not iSal, in increasing the Fe content of lettuce grown in soilless cultivation systems.

Abstract
Valerian salad and lettuce are edible species that are easy to grow rapidly, and have traits useful for commercial purposes. The consumption of these species is increasing worldwide for their nutritional properties. Seed germination and seedling development are critical stages in the life cycle of plants. Seed priming, including the use of high-energy radiation, is a set of techniques based on the idea that low stress levels stimulate plant responses, thereby improving seed germination and plant growth. In this study, we evaluated in hydroponic culture (i) the germination performance; (ii) morphological traits; and (iii) antioxidant and phenol contents at different endpoints in Lactuca sativa and Valerianella locusta that were developed from seeds exposed to X-rays (1 Gy and 10 Gy doses). Under radiation, biomass production increased in both species, especially in lettuce, where also a reduction in the mean germination time occurred. Radiation increased the level of phenols during the first growth weeks, under both doses for lettuce, and only 1 Gy was required for valerian salad. The species-specific responses observed in this research suggest that the use of radiations in seed priming needs to be customized to the species.

Abstract
While plant microorganisms can promote plants by producing natural antibiotics, they can also be vectors for disease transmission. Contamination from plant management practices and the surrounding environment can adversely affect plants, leading to infections and hindered growth due to microbial competition for nutrients. The recirculation of nutrient-rich fluids can facilitate the transport of microorganisms between vegetables in the hydroponic production system. This issue can be addressed through the application of the decontamination method in the hydroponic liquid. Ultraviolet light (UV-C) has been employed for microbiology, and its effects on lettuce were evaluated in this study. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a decontamination system using UV-C in hydroponic solutions during nutrient recirculation in hydroponics. We evaluated the time required for lettuce plants to reach their maximum height, as well as their pigment content, phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity, and micro and macronutrient levels. The evaluation was conducted under two photoperiods (18 and 20 hours) in lettuce samples exposed to UV-C in the hydroponic fluid, with control groups not exposed to UV-C. The application of the UV-C decontamination system in hydroponic circulation water containing nutrients accelerated plant growth while maintaining nutritional values equal to or higher than those in the control groups without such a system. The results of microorganism control highlight the potential application of this technique for enhancing and expediting vegetable production. This approach reduces production time and enhances nutrient absorption and the content of certain compounds and minerals.

Abstract
Biostimulants (BSs) are natural materials (i.e., organic or inorganic compounds, and/or microorganisms) having beneficial effects on plant growth and productivity, and able to improve resilience/tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, they represent an innovative alternative to the phyto- and agrochemicals, being environmentally friendly and a valuable tool to cope with extreme climate conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of several biomolecules (i.e., Xylanase, β-Glucosidase, Chitinase, and Tramesan), alone or in combinations, on lettuce plant growth and quality. With this aim, the influence of these biomolecules on biomass, pigment content, and antioxidant properties in treated plants were investigated. Our results showed that Xylanase and, to a lesser extent, β-Glucosidase, have potentially biostimulant activity for lettuce cultivation, positively influencing carotenoids, total polyphenols, and ascorbic acid contents; similar effects were found with respect to antioxidative properties. Furthermore, the effect of the more promising molecules (Xylanase and β-Glucosidase) was also evaluated in kiwifruit cultured cells to test their putative role as sustainable input for plant cell biofactories. The absence of phytotoxic effects of both molecules at low doses (0.1 and 0.01 µM), and the significantly enhanced cell biomass growth, indicates a positive impact on kiwifruit cells.

Abstract
Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a cause of a prevalent and destructive disease that attacks many horticultural food crops, such as lettuce. This soil-borne necrotrophic fungal pathogen causes significant economic losses in worldwide lettuce production annually. Furthermore, current methods utilized for management and combatting the disease, such as biocontrol, are insufficient. In this study, three cultivars of lettuce (one Crispy and two Leafy cultivars of red and green lettuce) were grown in central Poland (Lodz Voivodeship), a widely known Polish horticultural region. In the summer and early autumn, lettuce cultivars were grown in control and S. sclerotiorum-infected fields. The lettuce cultivars (Templin, Lollo Rossa, and Lollo Bionda) differed phenotypically and in terms of the survival of the fungal infection. The Crispy iceberg Templin was the most susceptible to S. sclerotiorum infection compared to the other cultivars during both vegetation seasons. The total content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins varied among cultivars and fluctuated during infection. Moreover, phenolic content was affected by vegetation season with alterable environmental factors such as air temperature, humidity, soil temperature, and pH. The most increased levels of phenolics, both flavonoids and anthocyanins in infected plants, were observed in the Leafy red Lollo Rossa cultivar in both crops. However, the highest survival/resistance to the fungus was noticed for Lollo Rossa in the summer crop and Lollo Bionda in the autumn crop.

Abstract
Elucidating the mechanisms and pathways involved in genotype-environment (G×E) interactions and phenotypic plasticity is critical for improving plant growth. Controlled environment agricultural systems allow growers to modulate the environment for particular genotypes. In this study, we evaluated the effects of interactions among 14 genotypes and four artificial light environments on leaf lettuce phenotypes and dissected the underlying molecular mechanism via transcriptome-based modeling. Variations in morphological traits and phytochemical concentrations in response to artificial light treatments revealed significant G×E interactions. The appropriate genotype and artificial light combinations for maximizing phenotypic expression were determined on the basis of a joint regression analysis and the additive main effect and multiplicative interaction model for these G×E interactions. Transcriptome-based regression modeling explained approximately 50%-90% of the G×E variations. Further analyzes indicated Red Lettuce Leaves 4 (RLL4) regulates UV-B and blue light signaling through the effects of the HY5-MBW pathway on flavonoid biosynthesis and contributes to natural variations in the light-responsive plasticity of lettuce traits. Our study represents an important step toward elucidating the phenotypic variations due to G×E interactions in nonheading lettuce under artificial light conditions.

Abstract
Purple lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Zhongshu Purple Lettuce) was chosen as the trial material, and LED intelligent light control consoles were used as the light sources. The purpose was to increase the yield and quality of purple lettuce while lowering its nitrate level. By adding various ratios of NO3--N and NH4+-N to the nutrient solution and 20 µmol m-2 s-1 UV-A based on white, red, and blue light (130, 120, 30 µmol m-2 s-1), the effects of different NO3--N/NH4+-N ratios (NO3--N, NO3--N/NH4+-N = 3/1, NH4+-N) and UV-A interaction on yield, quality, photosynthetic characteristics, anthocyanins, and nitrogen assimilation of purple lettuce were studied. In order to produce purple lettuce hydroponically under controlled environmental conditions, a theoretical foundation and technological specifications were developed, taking into account an appropriate UV-A dose and NO3--N/NH4+-N ratio. Results demonstrate that adding a 20 µmol m-2 s-1 UV-A, and a NO3--N/NH4+-N treatment of 3/1, significantly reduced the nitrate level while increasing the growth, photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll, carotenoid, and anthocyanin content of purple lettuce. The purple leaf lettuce leaves have an enhanced capacity to absorb nitrogen. Furthermore, plants have an acceleration of nitrogen metabolism, which raises the concentration of free amino acids and soluble proteins and promotes biomass synthesis. Thus, based on the NO3--N/NH4+-N (3/1) treatment, adding 20 µmol m-2 s-1 UV-A will be helpful in boosting purple lettuce production and decreasing its nitrate content.

Abstract
Dietary vegetables rich in bioactive compounds are major responsible for promoting human health. Herein, the effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an important signaling compound, on growth and quality of two hydroponic lettuce genotypes was investigated. The maximum enhancement of growth traits was shown in lettuce elicited with 10 mmol/L H2O2, while 40 mmol/L H2O2 significantly reduced above growth traits. H2O2 elicitation increased pigment contents and photosynthetic process, which consequently caused enhancements of phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid, glutathione, carotenoids, soluble sugars, free amino acids, soluble protein, minerals, and antioxidant capacity, while above alterations appeared in a genotype-dependent manner. The phenolic accumulation was correlated with improved activity of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and expression levels of genes related to phenolic biosynthesis, including PAL, chalcone synthase, flavanone 3-hydroxylase, dihydroflavonol-4 reductase, and UDP-glucose: flavonoid 3-O-glucosyltransferase. Therefore, elicitation with H2O2 is a promising strategy to develop lettuce with high bioactive compounds and biomass.

Abstract
Inoculation with Bacillus subtilis is a promising approach to increase plant yield and nutrient acquisition. In this context, this study aimed to estimate the B. subtilis concentration that increases yield, gas exchange, and nutrition of lettuce plants in a hydroponic system. The research was carried out in a greenhouse in Ilha Solteira, Brazil. A randomized block design with five replications was adopted. The treatments consisted of B. subtilis concentrations in nutrient solution [0 mL "non-inoculated", 7.8 × 103, 15.6 × 103, 31.2 × 103, and 62.4 × 103 colony forming units (CFU) mL-1 of nutrient solution]. There was an increase of 20% and 19% in number of leaves and 22% and 25% in shoot fresh mass with B. subtilis concentrations of 15.6 × 103 and 31.2 × 103 CFU mL-1 as compared to the non-inoculated plants, respectively. Also, B. subtilis concentration at 31.2 × 103 CFU mL-1 increased net photosynthesis rate by 95%, intercellular CO2 concentration by 30%, and water use efficiency by 67% as compared to the non-inoculated treatments. The concentration of 7.8 × 103 CFU mL-1 improved shoot accumulation of Ca, Mg, and S by 109%, 74%, and 69%, when compared with non-inoculated plants, respectively. Inoculation with B. subtilis at 15.6 × 103 CFU mL-1 provided the highest fresh leaves yield while inoculation at 15.6 × 103 and 31.2 × 103 CFU mL-1 increased shoot fresh mass and number of leaves. Concentrations of 7.8 × 103 and 15.6 × 103 increased shoot K accumulation. The concentrations of 7.8 × 103, 15.6 × 103, and 31.2 × 103 CFU mL-1 increased shoot N accumulation in hydroponic lettuce plants.

Abstract
Food-borne illnesses caused by pathogenic Escherichia coli strains, especially enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), are a serious public health problem, as debilitating disease and even death from such food poisonings have been repeatedly reported. Colicin M (ColM), a non-antibiotic antimicrobial protein produced by some strains of E. coli, has shown promising activity in controlling multiple enteropathogenic strains of E. coli and related pathogens. As contaminated green leafy vegetables are a frequent source of pathogenic E. coli infections, we genetically modified (GM) two edible crops, lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and mizuna (Brassica rapa subsp. nipposinica var. laciniata), to stably express the ColM gene and assessed the antibacterial activity of tissue extracts from these plants against selected E. coli strains in vitro. Transgenic plants of these species were developed using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation with a vector containing the ColM-coding gene (cma) under the control of the 35S promoter. Western blot analysis of recombinant ColM protein was performed in selected transgenic plants to confirm cma gene expression and quantify ColM accumulation. Extracts of transgenic plants expressing ColM showed significant activity against two major strains of EHEC (O157:H7 and O104:H4) as well as E. coli strains resistant to beta-lactam- and carbapenem-class antibiotics. Importantly, the antibacterial activity persisted in several subsequent generations of transgenic lettuce and mizuna plants that stably expressed the ColM gene. In addition, our results also show that the antibacterial activity of dried (up to 40°C) biomass of transgenic plants remained stable without a decrease for at least three months.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effect of foliar application of chitosan at 150 ppm and glycine betaine at 700 ppm on lettuce plants cv. Balady grown under well-watered and water deficit conditions in terms of growth, yield, quality, and water usage efficiency. The study was conducted in Qalubia Governorate, Egypt, during the two seasons of 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 on clay soil. Results indicated that water-stressed plants had a reduction in plant fresh weight, plant height, leaf area, and total yield, chlorophyll content and relative water content, while they exhibited an increase in total soluble solids, nitrate, and proline contents as well as water-use efficiency in both seasons. The foliar application of chitosan or glycine betaine to lettuce significantly improved plant performance under limited and normal irrigation conditions in comparison with untreated plants. The maximum positive effect was for chitosan foliar application. Overall, the results of this study indicated that foliar application of chitosan or glycine betaine was a substitute technology for improving the lettuce yield and quality as well as increasing water use efficiency under both irrigation regimes, but may be more efficient in lettuce plants subjected to a water deficit.

Abstract
Fruit and vegetables hold a prominent place in dietary guidance worldwide and, following the increasing awareness of the importance of their consumption for health, their demand has been on the rise. Fruit and vegetable production needs to be reconsidered so that it can be productive and, meantime, sustainable, resilient, and can deliver healthy and nutritious diets. Microbial plant biostimulants (PBs) are a possible approach to pursuing global food security and agricultural sustainability, and their application emerged as a promising alternative or substitute to the use of agrochemicals (e.g., more efficient use of mineral and organic fertilizers or less demand and more efficient use of pesticides in integrated production systems) and as a new frontier of investigation. To the best of our knowledge, no comprehensive reviews are currently available on the effects that microbial plant biostimulants' application can have specifically on each horticultural crop. This study thus aimed to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the effects that PBs can have on the morpho-anatomical, biochemical, physiological, and functional traits of the most studied crops. It emerged that most experiments occurred under greenhouse conditions; only a few field trials were carried out. Tomato, lettuce, and basil crops have been primarily treated with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), while plant grow-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) metabolites were used for crops, such as strawberries and cucumbers. The literature review also pointed out that crop response to PBs is never univocal. Complex mechanisms related to the PB type, the strain, and the crop botanical family, occur.

Abstract
Flavonoids are antioxidant phytochemicals that confer a beneficial effect on human health. We have previously developed and characterized eight lettuce (Latuca sativa L.) lines that accumulated high levels of diverse flavonoids and their precursors in controlled environment conditions. Three Rutgers Scarlet lettuce (RSL) lines selected in tissue culture for deep-red color (RSL-NAR, RSL-NBR, RSL-NFR) accumulate anthocyanins and quercetin, three lines identified in a chemically mutagenized red lettuce population accumulate kaempferol (KfoA and KfoB) or naringenin chalcone (Nco), and two lines that were spontaneous green mutants derived from the red line RSL-NAR (GSL, GSL-DG) accumulate quercetin. These eight lines were field-grown in the Salinas Valley of California for four years together with seven control accessions of varying colors (light green, dark green, red, and dark red). At market maturity, a substantial variation in plant composition was observed, but the three RSL lines consistently accumulated high levels of cyanidin, GSL and GSL-DG accumulated the highest levels of quercetin, KfoA and KfoB accumulated kaempferol, and Nco amassed naringenin chalcone, confirming that these mutant lines produce high levels of beneficial phytochemicals under field conditions. Mutant lines and control accessions were also assessed for their biomass production (plant weight, height, and width), overall content of pigments (leaf chlorophyll and anthocyanins), resistance to diseases (downy mildew, lettuce drop, and Impatiens necrotic spot virus), postharvest quality of processed tissue (deterioration and enzymatic discoloration), and composition of 23 mineral elements. All but one mutant line had a fresh plant weight at harvest comparable to commercial leaf cultivars; only Nco plants were significantly (p < 0.05) smaller. Therefore, except for Nco, the new, flavonoid hyperaccumulating lines can be considered for field cultivation.

Abstract
This study comprehensively characterized the metabolite profiles of six lettuce varieties and established the correlation between the elucidated profiles and their antivirulence effects. A total of 195 metabolites were annotated using LC-QTOF-MS/MS metabolomics assisted by molecular networking and integrated with chemometrics. Red varieties (red longifolia and lolla rosa) demonstrated higher chlorogenic and chicoric acids suggesting their antioxidant properties. In parallel, amino acids and disaccharides were enriched in romaine longifolia rationalizing its palatable taste and nutritional potential, while crispa, capitata, and lolla bionda presented a high β-carboline alkaloid content. The antibacterial and antihemolytic potential of all varieties against methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was assessed and validated by prominent downregulation of α-hemolysin transcriptional levels in both strains. Moreover, correlation analysis revealed sesquiterpenes, β-carboline alkaloids, amino acids, and oxy-fatty acids as the main bioactives. Results emphasize lettuce significance as a functional food and nutraceutical source, and highlight varieties naturally rich in antibacterial agents to adapt breeding programs.

Abstract
Though Zinc (Zn) supplementation can mitigate root-based Cadmium (Cd) uptake in plants, the impact of foliar-applied Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on this process remains under-explored. This study investigates the influence of foliar-applied ZnO NPs on the growth of lettuce and its Cd uptake in Cd-contaminated soil in greenhouse setting. Green synthesized ZnO (G-ZnO) NPs (10 and 100 mg/L) using sweet potato leaf extracts were used, and compared with commercially available ZnO (C-ZnO) NPs (100 mg/L) for their efficacy. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used for G-ZnO NPs characterization. Shoot dry weight, antioxidant activity, and chlorophyll content were all negatively affected by Cd but positively affected by ZnO NPs application. ZnO NPs application resulted in a notable reduction in lettuce Cd uptake, with the highest reduction (43%) observed at 100 mg/L G-ZnO NPs. In the lettuce shoot, Zn and Cd concentration showed a significant inverse correlation (R2 = 0.79-0.9, P < 0.05). This study offers insights into the impact of chemical and green synthesized ZnO NPs on enhancing crop growth under stress conditions, and their role in modulating Cd uptake in plants, indicating potential implications for sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract
The influence of the culture medium without bacterial cells, obtained after the cultivation of endophytic bacteria Priestia endophytica UCM B-5715, on the growth and synthesis of some metabolites in lettuce and chicory seedlings under in vitro conditions was studied. Bacteria were cultivated in liquid LB medium at 37 ºC for 24 h with periodic stirring. The culture fluid was separated from the cell biomass. For preparing the test solution, the supernatant was sterilized by filtration through a filter with a pore diameter of 0.2 µm (Sartorius, Minisart) and diluted with sterile distilled water. The 20% culture fluid (30 µl/plant) was applied to 3-day-old seedlings. In 28 days root and shoot weights of treated chicory plants were 54.3 ± 6.9 and 260.0 ± 20.2 mg, respectively (8.0 ± 0.7 and 91.4 ± 7.0 mg for the control plants). Total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity increased only in chicory plants after the addition of the test solution. Significant changes in the metabolism of treated plants were detected. In the treated lettuce plants asparagine content increased compared to the control (90 vs 22 µg/g, p < 0.1). The median content of fructose was also higher in treated lettuce and chicory plants (1469 vs 73 µg/g and 2278 vs 1051 µg/g). Therefore, the use of culture fluid obtained after the cultivation of P. endophytica UСM B-5715 stimulated the growth of lettuce and chicory plants, affecting the synthesis of some compounds in single-treated plants. These results indicate the potential of compounds excreted during bacterial growth to create natural growth stimulators.

Abstract
Introduction Water is one of the important factors affecting the yield of leafy vegetables. Lettuce, as a widely planted vegetable, requires frequent irrigation due to its shallow taproot and high leaf evaporation rate. Therefore, screening drought-resistant genotypes is of great significance for lettuce production. Methods In the present study, significant variations were observed among 13 morphological and physiological traits of 42 lettuce genotypes under normal irrigation and water-deficient conditions. Results Frequency analysis showed that soluble protein (SP) was evenly distributed across six intervals. Principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to transform the 13 indexes into four independent comprehensive indicators with a cumulative contribution ratio of 94.83%. The stepwise regression analysis showed that root surface area (RSA), root volume (RV), belowground dry weight (BDW), soluble sugar (SS), SP, and leaf relative water content (RWC) could be used to evaluate and predict the drought resistance of lettuce genotypes. Furthermore, the drought resistance ranks of the genotypes were similar according to the drought resistance comprehensive evaluation value (D value), comprehensive drought resistance coefficient (CDC), and weight drought resistance coefficient (WDC). The cluster analysis enabled the division of the 42 genotypes into five drought resistance groups; among them, variety Yidali151 was divided into group I as a strongly drought-resistant variety, group II included 6 drought-resistant genotypes, group III included 16 moderately drought-resistant genotypes, group IV included 12 drought-sensitive genotypes, and group V included 7 highly drought-sensitive genotypes. Moreover, a representative lettuce variety was selected from each of the five groups to verify its water resistance ability under water deficit conditions. In the drought-resistant variety, it was observed that stomatal density, superoxide anion (O2.-wfi2) production rate, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content exhibited a low increase rate, while catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and that peroxidase (POD) activity exhibited a higher increase than in the drought-sensitive variety. Discussion In summary, the identified genotypes are important because their drought-resistant traits can be used in future drought-resistant lettuce breeding programs and water-efficient cultivation.

Abstract
Urban vegetable gardens are very often a feature of cities that want to offer their citizens a more sustainable lifestyle by producing their own food products. However, cities can have significant pollution levels (or pollution hotspots) due to specific sources of pollution, such as traffic. Among the various pollutants, microplastics (MPs) are emerging as a consensual concern due to the awareness of the environmental contamination, their bioaccumulation potential and human intake, and, consequently unknown human health impacts. The present study compared the content of MPs in lettuce plants cultivated in Lisbon urban gardens with those cultivated in a rural area, as well as samples bought in supermarkets. Microplastics were detected in all washed leaves, with mean levels ranging from 6.3 ± 6.2 to 29.4 ± 18.2 MPs/g. Lettuce grown in urban gardens from areas with high traffic density showed higher MPs levels. Weak positive Spearman's rank correlations were found between MPs content and concentrations of Cu and S (determined by Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, PIXE), suggesting a possible role of traffic contribution to MPs levels, as both elements are considered traffic-source tracers. These results contribute to shed light on the MP contamination of vegetables grown in such urban environments, that may represent a potential MP exposure route through the dietary intake, corresponding to a 70% increase in annual MP intake compared to lettuces bought in supermarkets.

Abstract
Single primer enrichment technology (SPET) is a novel high-throughput genotyping method based on short-read sequencing of specific genomic regions harboring polymorphisms. SPET provides an efficient and reproducible method for genotyping target loci, overcoming the limits associated with other reduced representation library sequencing methods that are based on a random sampling of genomic loci. The possibility to sequence regions surrounding a target SNP allows the discovery of thousands of closely linked, novel SNPs. In this work, we report the design and application of the first SPET panel in lettuce, consisting of 41,547 probes spanning the whole genome and designed to target both coding (~96%) and intergenic (~4%) regions. A total of 81,531 SNPs were surveyed in 160 lettuce accessions originating from a total of 10 countries in Europe, America, and Asia and representing 10 horticultural types. Model ancestry population structure clearly separated the cultivated accessions (Lactuca sativa) from accessions of its presumed wild progenitor (L. serriola), revealing a total of six genetic subgroups that reflected a differentiation based on cultivar typology. Phylogenetic relationships and principal component analysis revealed a clustering of butterhead types and a general differentiation between germplasm originating from Western and Eastern Europe. To determine the potentiality of SPET for gene discovery, we performed genome-wide association analysis for main agricultural traits in L. sativa using six models (GLM naive, MLM, MLMM, CMLM, FarmCPU, and BLINK) to compare their strength and power for association detection. Robust associations were detected for seed color on chromosome 7 at 50 Mbp. Colocalization of association signals was found for outer leaf color and leaf anthocyanin content on chromosome 9 at 152 Mbp and on chromosome 5 at 86 Mbp. The association for bolting time was detected with the GLM, BLINK, and FarmCPU models on chromosome 7 at 164 Mbp. Associations were detected in chromosomal regions previously reported to harbor candidate genes for these traits, thus confirming the effectiveness of SPET for GWAS. Our findings illustrated the strength of SPET for discovering thousands of variable sites toward the dissection of the genomic diversity of germplasm collections, thus allowing a better characterization of lettuce collections.

Abstract
The main goal of our study was to find an optimal combination of tested factors to achieve lettuce rich in bioactive compounds sustaining its pleasant taste. We examined three red and three green cultivars in a greenhouse using two microbiological fertilisers (EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho), and their combination. Plants were grown in three consecutive growing seasons (autumn, winter, and spring). Lactones accumulated in autumn, whereas phenolics' concentration rose during winter. Red cultivars showed higher phenolics and lactone content, where chicoric acid and luteolin-7-glucoside were the most abundant in the 'Gaugin' winter trial. Lactucopicrin was the predominant lactone among tested cultivars with the highest value in the red cultivar 'Carmesi'. Solely applicated, the fertiliser EM Aktiv and Vital Tricho led to significantly higher phenolic acid and dihydrolactucopicrin content, while combined, there were notably increased levels of all detected lactones. Application of single fertilisers had no effect on flavonoid content, while the combination even reduced it. A sensory analysis showed a negative correlation between overall taste and total sesquiterpene lactones, lactucopicrin, caffeoylmalic, and chlorogenic acid, indicating a less bitter taste with decreasing content of these compounds. Our findings indicate that the cultivar, fertiliser, and growing season jointly affected all of the tested parameters, highlighting the differences in the application of EM Aktiv, Vital Tricho, and their combination.

Abstract
The indoor cultivation of lettuce in a vertical hydroponic system (VHS) under artificial lighting is an energy-intensive process incurring a high energy cost. This study determines the optimal daily light integral (DLI) as a function of photoperiod on the physiological, morphological, and nutritional parameters, as well as the resource use efficiency of iceberg lettuce (cv. Glendana) grown in an indoor VHS. Seedlings were grown in a photoperiod of 12 h, 16 h, and 20 h with a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 200 µmol m-2 s-1 using white LED lights. The results obtained were compared with VHS without artificial lights inside the greenhouse. The DLI values for 12 h, 16 h, and 20 h were 8.64, 11.5, and 14.4 mol m-2 day-1, respectively. The shoot fresh weight at harvest increased from 275.5 to 393 g as the DLI increased from 8.64 to 11.5 mol m-2 day-1. DLI of 14.4 mol m-2 day-1 had a negative impact on fresh weight, dry weight, and leaf area. The transition from VHS without artificial lights to VHS with artificial lights resulted in a 60% increase in fresh weight. Significantly higher water use efficiency of 71 g FW/L and energy use efficiency of 206.31 g FW/kWh were observed under a DLI of 11.5 mol m-2 day-1. The study recommends an optimal DLI of 11.5 mol m-2 day-1 for iceberg lettuce grown in an indoor vertical hydroponic system.

Abstract
Three garden vegetables-radish, carrot and lettuce-were cultivated in a pot experiment using two soils from the Příbram area polluted mainly by cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr). The soils of the Příbram district, Czech Republic, are heavily polluted as a result of the atmospheric deposition of toxic elements originating from historic lead-silver mining and smelting activities. The results showed that lettuce absorbed the highest amounts of toxic elements (Cd 28 and 30, Cr 12 and 13, Zn 92 and 205 mg·kg-1 DW), except Pb, which was higher in radish (30 and 49 mg·kg-1 DW). Changes in macronutrient contents in edible parts were not found, except for sulfur. A higher total free amino acids (fAAs) accumulation was shown in all vegetables in more contaminated soil, with the highest fAA content being in radish. A group of essential fAAs reached 7-24% of total fAAs in vegetables. The risk to human health was characterized using the target hazard quotient and total hazard index (HI). The cumulative effect of the consumption of vegetables with HI > 1 showed possible non-carcinogenic health effects for lettuce and carrot. HI decreased in the order Cd > Pb > Cr > Zn. The carcinogenic risk of toxic elements decreased in the order Cd > Cr > Pb (0.00054, 0.00026, 0.00003). These values showed a carcinogenic risk from the consumption of lettuce and carrot and confirmed that the adult population of the studied area is at high risk if lettuce and carrot cultivated in this area are consumed daily.

Abstract
<b>Background and Objective:</b> The liver plays an important role in transforming and clearing chemicals in human body. Hepatic injury is usually caused by numerous toxic chemicals such as carbon tetrachloride, thioacetamide, galactosamine and drugs including paracetamol as overdoses consumption. This investigation aimed to study the immunomodulatory protective effects of black seed (<i>Nigella sativa</i> L.) oil and lettuce (<i>Lactuca sativa</i> L.) oil against paracetamol liver intoxication in rats. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Twenty-four male albino rats weighing 150±10 g each, were randomly divided into 4 equal groups (6 rats each) as follows: Control negative; control positive as paracetamol hepatotoxicity; <i>Nigella sativa</i> oil and <i>Lactuca sativa</i> oil at a dose of 1 mL kg<sup>1</sup> b.wt., as protective from hepatotoxicity, then serum analysis for all rats were conducted and the obtained data were analyzed using SPSS version-22. <b>Results:</b> All rats orally preventable injected with <i>Nigella sativa</i> and <i>Lactuca sativa</i> oils caused significant decrease in Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC), creatine kinase (CK), Creatine Kinase-MB (CKMB), magnesium (Mg), phosphor (Phos.), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), potassium (K), amylase (Amyl), tri-glycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), creatinine (Creat), Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) as compared to liver intoxicated rats. <b>Conclusion:</b> Black seed oils and <i>Lactuca sativa</i> oils could be used as natural immunomodulatory agents against paracetamol liver intoxication and enhance the body's immune functions with improving the health status of the liver.

Abstract
Here, we investigated the uptake, transport, and subcellular distribution of the pesticides pymetrozine and spirotetramat, and spirotetramat metabolites B-enol, B-glu, B-mono, and B-keto, under hydroponic conditions. Spirotetramat and pymetrozine exhibited high bioconcentrations in lettuce roots, with both having root concentration factor (RCF) values >1 after exposure for 24 h. The translocation of pymetrozine from roots to shoots was higher than that of spirotetramat. Pymetrozine is absorbed in roots mainly via the symplastic pathway and is primarily stored in the soluble fraction of lettuce root and shoot cells. The cell wall and soluble fractions were the major enrichment sites of spirotetramat and its metabolites in root cells. Spirotetramat and B-enol were mainly enriched in the soluble fractions of lettuce shoot cells, whereas B-keto and B-glu accumulated in cell walls and organelles, respectively. Both symplastic and apoplastic pathways were involved in spirotetramat absorption. Pymetrozine and spirotetramat uptake by lettuce roots was passive, with no aquaporin-mediated dissimilation or diffusion. The findings of this study enhance our understanding of the transfer of pymetrozine, spirotetramat, and spirotetramat metabolites from the environment to lettuce, and their subsequent bioaccumulation. This study describes a novel approach for the efficient management of lettuce pest control using spirotetramat and pymetrozine. At the same time, it is of great significance to evaluate the food safety and environmental risks of spirotetramat and its metabolites.
