Abstract
Recognizing the risk factors for dyslipidemia during pregnancy is crucial for safeguarding the health of both the mothers and the offspring. Growing evidence emerged and suggested links between environmental factors, including metals, and alteration in lipid levels or dyslipidemia in general populations. However, knowledge of the associations during pregnancy remains extremely lacking. Herein, we aimed to explore whether elevated metal exposure constitutes a risk factor for dyslipidemia in pregnant women. Based on the Tongji-Shuangliu Birth Cohort (TSBC), a total of 663 pregnant women were recruited and their urinary levels of 17 metals and blood lipid biomarkers in early pregnancy were measured, namely triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The multivariable linear regression models revealed that exposure to selected metals during early pregnancy was significantly associated with some important biomarkers. In particular, after natural log-transformed for the levels of lipid biomarkers and metals, copper (Cu) exposure was positively associated with HDL-C (β = 0.024, 95% CI: 0.001, 0.046), while zinc (Zn) was associated with TG (β = 0.062, 95% CI: 0.013, 0.110) and selenium with TC (β = 0.028, 95% CI: 0.004, 0.054). Exposure to rubidium (Rb) was positively associated with multiple lipid biomarkers, including HDL-C (β = 0.020, 95% CI: 0.002, 0.037) and LDL-C (β = 0.022, 95% CI: 0.001, 0.042). Mixture exposure analysis further identified significant associations between Cu and HDL-C, Zn and TG, Rb and HDL-C, when multiple metal exposures were considered in the Bayesian kernel machine regression model simultaneously. Our findings showed that exposure to several metals during early pregnancy was associated with an increased prevalence of blood lipid abnormalities in pregnant women. These findings underscore the potential impact of metal combinations on lipid metabolism and increase our understanding of the risk factors associated with abnormal lipid metabolism during pregnancy.

Abstract
Zinc supplementation has therapeutic effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, including dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and inflammation as the main contributors to CVD pathogenesis. Since CVD is a major cause of mortality among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), this study aimed to overview the potential effects of zinc supplementation on CVD risk factors in T2DM patients. To determine appropriate randomized clinical trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of zinc supplementation on CVD risk factors, electronic sources including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were systematically searched until January 2023. The heterogeneity of trials was checked using the I2 statistic. According to the heterogeneity tests, random-effects models were estimated, and pooled data were defined as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Of the 4004 initial records, 23 studies that met inclusion criteria were analyzed in this meta-analysis. The pooled findings indicated the significant lowering effects of zinc supplementation on triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), and C-reactive protein (CRP), while high-density cholesterol (HDL) concentrations showed an elevation after zinc supplementation. In addition to statistical significance, the effect of zinc supplementation on most of the variables was clinically significant; however, the quality of evidence in the included studies is regarded as low or very low for most variables. Our study demonstrated that zinc supplementation has beneficial effects on glycemic control markers, lipid profile, and CRP levels as a classic marker of inflammation in T2DM. Due to the high degree of heterogeneity between studies and the low rate of quality in them, further well-designed studies are necessitated to strengthen our findings.

Abstract
Zinc deficiency has been associated with the worsening of diabetes while zinc supplementation has been proposed to ameliorate diabetes. This study examined the effects of marginal zinc deficiency (MZD) and zinc supplementation (ZS) on obesity, glycemic control, pancreatic islets, hepatic steatosis and renal function of Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats. Male ZDF rats were fed an MZD, zinc control (ZC) or ZS diet (4, 30 and 300 mg Zn/kg diet, respectively), and lean Zucker rats were fed a ZC diet for 8 weeks. MZD and ZS did not alter body weight or whole-body composition in ZDF rats. MZD ZDF rats had reduced zinc concentrations in the femur and pancreas, a greater number of enlarged pancreatic islets and a diminished response to an oral glucose load based on a 1.8-fold greater incremental area-under-the-curve (AUC) for glucose compared to ZC ZDF. ZS ZDF rats had elevated serum, femur and pancreatic zinc concentrations, unchanged pancreatic parameters and a 50% reduction in the AUC for insulin compared to ZC ZDF rats, suggesting greater insulin sensitivity. Dietary zinc intake did not alter hepatic steatosis, creatinine clearance, or levels of proteins that contribute to insulin signaling, inflammation or zinc transport in epididymal fat. Potential adverse effects of ZS were suggested by reduced hepatic copper concentrations and elevated serum urea compared to ZC ZDF rats. In summary, ZS improved the pancreatic insulin response but not the glucose handling. In contrast, reduced zinc status in ZDF rats led to impaired glucose tolerance and a compensatory increase in the number and size of pancreatic islets which could lead to β-cell exhaustion.

Abstract
PURPOSE We previously showed the beneficial effect of L-Lysine (Lys), a chemical chaperone, on reducing diabetic complications in diabetic rats and type 2 diabetic patients. Herein, we evaluated the effect of Lys co-administration with Vitamin C and Zinc (Lys+VC+Zn), in diabetic rats. METHODS The streptozotocin (50 mg/Kg) was injected into male adult Wistar rats to induce diabetes. Then, different groups of normal and diabetic rats were treated with Lys and Lys+VC+Zn for five months. So, there were 0.1 % Lys in the drinking water of both groups. The control groups received water alone. During the experiment, the body weight, and various parameters were determined in the blood, serum/plasma, and urine of the rats. RESULTS The determination of biochemical indexes confirmed diabetes induction and its complications in rats. Treatment with either Lys or Lys+VC+Zn resulted in reduced blood glucose and protein glycation (decreasing AGEs and HbA1c), increased insulin secretion, alleviated insulin resistance and HOMA-IR, improved lipid profile and HDL functionality (LCAT and PON1), enhanced antioxidant status (FRAP and AOPP), improved kidney function (decreased microalbuminuria, serum urea, and creatinine), and increased chaperone capacity (HSP70). Lys+VC+Zn showed better effects on these parameters than Lys alone. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study indicated that co-administration of Lys, a chemical chaperone, with two antioxidants (VC and Zn) potentiates its antidiabetic effects and prevent diabetic complications in rat model of diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Considering the interactions between heavy metals, a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of exposure to various types of co-interacting heavy metals on health is required. This study assessed the association between dyslipidemia markers and blood mercury, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc, and nickel levels in residents of an abandoned refinery plant. METHODS A total of 972 individuals (exposed group: 567, control group: 405) living near the Janghang refinery plant in the Republic of Korea were included. Blood mercury, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc, nickel, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were measured. The combined effect of the six heavy metals on dyslipidemia markers was evaluated using a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model and compared with the results of a linear regression analysis. The BKMR model results were compared using a stratified analysis of the exposed and control groups. RESULTS In the BKMR model, the combined effect of the six heavy metals was significantly associated with total cholesterol (TC) levels both below the 45th percentile and above the 55th percentile in the total population. The combined effect range between the 25th and 75th percentiles of the six metals on TC levels was larger in the exposed group than that in the total population. In the control group, the combined effects of the changes in concentration of the six heavy metals on the TC concentration were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the cholesterol levels of residents around the Janghang refinery plant may be elevated owing to exposure to multiple heavy metals.

Abstract
Protein diets are required for the normal development of the reproductive system and their inadequacy or deficiency might have hazardous functional complications during maturational and developmental stages. The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) supplementation on the male and female reproductive organs of rats with postnatal protein malnutrition. Male and female weanling rats were randomly assigned to six groups respectively. The adequate protein diet rats were fed with 16% casein diet while the protein malnourished diet (PMD) rats were fed with 5% casein diet. After the 8th week of feeding, Se (sodium selenite; Na2SeO3) and Zn (zinc sulfate; ZnSO4·7H2O) were supplemented for 3 weeks. The growth curve of body weights, lipid profile, testosterone and progesterone level, Na+-K+-ATPase activity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status were evaluated. The results showed that PMD reduced the body weights of male and female rats. It also reduced the activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase in the testes, but reductions in superoxide dismutase and glutathione-S-transferase activities, glutathione, vitamins C and E, testosterone, and progesterone levels were observed in both the testes and ovaries. Furthermore, PMD increased the nitric oxide level in both organs and altered the plasma lipid profiles in both sexes. Se and Zn supplementation, however, restored almost all the alterations observed in all the parameters analyzed. In conclusion, Se and Zn supplementation protects the male and female reproductive organs of rats against postnatal protein malnutrition.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is to investigate the overall effects of zinc supplementation on lipid profile and body composition such as body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase databases were searched from inception through October, 2023. The I2 and Cochran's Q tests were used to assess heterogeneity between studies. Nineteen RCTs (n = 1357 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. Zinc supplementation significantly reduced TG (WMD = - 17.41 mg/dL; 95% CI: - 22.60, - 12.22; P < 0.001), TC (WMD: - 19.60 mg/dL; 95% CI: - 28.46, - 10.73, P < 0.001), LDL-C (WMD = - 8.80 mg/dL; 95% CI: - 14.80, - 2.81; P = 0.004), and BMI (WMD = - 0.53 kg/m2; 95% CI: - 1.05, - 0.01; P = 0.046) but not BW (WMD: - 0.51 kg, 95 % CI: - 1.99, 0.97, P = 0.498). Moreover, zinc supplementation increased HDL-C (WMD = 4.82 mg/dL; 95% CI: 0.88, 8.76; P = 0.016) in patients with T2DM. Our results propose that zinc supplementation may be an effective strategy for improving lipid profile and body composition in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Research on the effects of zinc supplementation on lipid profiles in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to summarize the current data on the effects of zinc supplementation on lipid profiles in patients with T2DM. Three online databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched to find relevant studies published until September 2022. The exposure was zinc supplementation, and the outcomes were low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride (TG), and total cholesterol (TC). Fourteen randomized clinical trials consisting of 1067 patients were included in the statistical analysis. Significant improvement was observed in all 4 lipid profile components. Following zinc supplementation, a significant decrease was observed in TC (weighted mean difference [WMD]: -16.16; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -26.43, -5.89; P = 0.002), LDL (WMD: -6.18; 95% CI: -9.35, -3.02; P < 0.001), and TG (WMD: -13.08; 95% CI: -21.83, -4.34; P = 0.003). After analyzing 13 studies reporting HDL, a significant increase was seen (WMD: 3.76; 95% CI: 1.30, 6.22; P = 0.003). In a nonlinear dose-response analysis, a significant inverse association was observed between <12 wk zinc supplementation and TC, LDL, and TG (TC: WMD: -5, Pnonlinearity < 0.001; LDL: WMD: -5, Pnonlinearity = 0.07, TG: WMD: -16.5, Pnonlinearity = 0.006). Nonlinear dose-response analysis shows that the optimum elemental zinc dosage for the best response to the supplementation for TC, LDL, and TG are 120, 100, and 140 mg/d, respectively (TC: WMD: -5, Pnonlinearity < 0.001; LDL: WMD: -10, Pnonlinearity = 0.006, TG: WMD: -50, Pnonlinearity = 0.031). In conclusion, we found significant changes in all 4 components of the lipid profile through zinc supplementation in T2DM patients. Based on our findings, zinc supplementation may have profound favorable consequences on the lipid profile of T2DM patients, especially in the zinc-deficient group.

Abstract
SCOPE Zinc and glutamine are well known to be essential for the function and polarization of immune cells. TH 17 cells are more frequently induced during zinc deficiency and cover their energy requirement mainly through glutaminolysis. A dysregulation of TH 17 cells can contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases. Both inhibition of glutaminolysis and zinc supplementation suppress experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate whether zinc modulates glutaminolysis in T cells. METHODS AND RESULTS CD3/CD28 stimulation and mixed lymphocytes culture are used as in vitro models for T cell activation. Then, the glutaminolysis is investigated on mRNA, protein, and functional level. Zinc deficiency and glutaminase (GLS) inhibition decrease immune responses in vitro. Furthermore, extracellular zinc and glutamine levels both modulate glutaminolysis by changing the expression of glutamine transporters and key enzymes. Intriguingly, zinc directly interferes with the activity of GLS both in a cell free system and in the cytosol. CONCLUSION Besides T cell subset differentiation, zinc also impacts on the cellular metabolism by inhibiting glutaminolysis. This suggests that zinc deficiency can contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases whereas zinc supplementation can support their therapy.

Abstract
Background: Studies on humans have revealed the beneficial effects of zinc (Zn) supplementation in patients with type-2 diabetes. Aim: The present study was designed to investigate the effects of zinc supplementation on blood glucose level in type-2 diabetic patients and determine the interaction between age and zinc supplementation on type-2 diabetic patients. Methods: A randomized placebo-control trial conducted in Bashir Hospital of Sialkot, Allama Iqbal Memorial Hospital Sialkot and Civil Hospital of Daska, Sialkot. 144 diabetic patients were selected including an expected drop-out rate of 20%. All the participants were randomly divided into Group 1 (Treatment group with intervention given Zn tablets 20 mg/day) and Group 2 (control group with placebo effect). Each group was further divided into 2 age categories Category 1 (30-50 years of age) and Category 2 (51-70 Years of age). Demographic data, Anthropometric measurements, 24-h dietary recall, serum blood glucose analysis, HbA1C, and serum zinc levels were recorded at the beginning (0 day) and end of the study (60 days). Results: Final fasting serum glucose levels were significantly lowered in group 1 with (p < 0.05) as compared to group 2, but interestingly, results were significant (p < 0.05) in the older age group (51-70 years) as compared to their younger age counterparts (30-50 years) of group2. A similar trend was also found in the HbA1c, serum Zn levels and BMI of the participants. Conclusion: Results implied the possible phenomenon of better response to Zn supplementation among aged patients as compared to younger counterparts, which may suggest higher Zn demands with advanced age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE A deficit in zinc has been related to a higher probability of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative capabilities of zinc may have a wide range of therapeutic impacts on CVDs. We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of the possible impacts that zinc supplementation may have on the risk factors associated with CVDs. METHODS To identify eligible randomized clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of zinc supplementation on CVDs risk factors, electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were systematically searched up to January 2023. The heterogeneity of trials was checked using the I2 statistic. According to the heterogeneity tests, random effects models were estimated and pooled data were defined as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Of 23165 initial records, 75 studies that met inclusion criteria were analyzed in this meta-analysis. The pooled findings indicated the significant lowering effects of zinc supplementation on triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), fasting blood glucose (FBG), Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and glutathione (GSH), with no noticeable effects on low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), insulin, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), aspartate transaminase (AST), and Alanine aminotransferase (ALT). CONCLUSION Overall, zinc supplementation may boost recognized coronary risk factors that contribute to the development of CVDs. Future research should be conducted to bolster our results.

Abstract
Since a 2014 meta-analysis, several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of vitamin E intake on glycemic indices and insulin resistance in adults with diabetes have reached inconsistent conclusions. Therefore, we updated the previous meta-analysis to summarize the current evidence in this regard. Online databases including PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched to identify relevant studies published up to September 30, 2021, using relevant keywords. Random-effects models were used to obtain overall mean difference (MD) comparing vitamin E intake with a control group. In total, 38 RCTs with a total sample size of 2171 diabetic patients (1110 in vitamin E groups and 1061 in control groups) were included. Combining the results from 28 RCTs on fasting blood glucose, 32 RCTs on HbA1c, 13 RCTs on fasting insulin, and 9 studies on homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) showed a summary MD of -3.35 mg/dL (95% CI: -8.10 to 1.40, P = 0.16), -0.21% (95% CI: -0.33 to -0.09, P = 0.001), -1.05 µIU/mL (95% CI: -1.53 to -0.58, P < 0.001), and -0.44 (95% CI: -0.82 to -0.05, P = 0.02), respectively. This indicates a significant lowering effect of vitamin E on HbA1c, fasting insulin and HOMA-IR, while no significant effect on fasting blood glucose in diabetic patients. However, in subgroup analyses, we found that vitamin E intake significantly reduced fasting blood glucose in studies with an intervention duration of < 10 weeks. In conclusion, vitamin E intake has a beneficial role in improving HbA1c and insulin resistance in a population with diabetes. Moreover, short-term interventions with vitamin E have resulted in lower fasting blood glucose in these patients. This meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO with code CRD42022343118.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to heavy metals in the environment is widespread, while the relationship between combined exposure to heavy metals and dyslipidemia is unclear. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed, and 3544 participants aged 30 years or older were included in the analyses. Heavy metal concentrations in plasma were based on inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry. The relationship between heavy metals and dyslipidemia was estimated by logistic regression. BKMR was used to evaluate metal mixtures and their potential interactions. RESULTS In logistic regression analysis, participants in the fourth quartile of Fe and Zn (Fe > 1352.38 µg/L; Zn > 4401.42 µg/L) had a relatively higher risk of dyslipidemia (Fe, OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 0.92,1.38; Zn, OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.03,1.64). After sex stratification, females in the third quartile of plasma Zn (1062.05-4401.42 µg/L) had a higher relative risk of dyslipidemia (OR = 1.75, 95% CI: 1.28, 2.38). In BKMR analysis, metal mixtures were negatively associated with dyslipidemia in females when all metal concentrations were above the 50th percentile. In the total population (estimated from 0.030 to 0.031), As was positively associated with dyslipidemia when other metals were controlled at the 25th, 50th, or 75th percentile, respectively, and As was below the 75th percentile. In females (estimated from - 0.037 to -0.031), Zn was negatively associated with dyslipidemia when it was above the 50th percentile. CONCLUSION This study indicated that As was positively associated with dyslipidemia and that Zn may be negatively associated with dyslipidemia in females. Combined metal exposure was negatively associated with dyslipidemia in females. Females with low plasma Zn levels are more likely to develop dyslipidemia and should receive more clinical attention in this population.

Effect of Evening Primrose Oil Supplementation on Biochemical Parameters and Nutrition of Patients Treated with Isotretinoin for Acne Vulgaris: A Randomized Double-Blind Trial. Abstract
Background: Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases. One of the therapeutic options recommended for severe acne or acne that has not responded to previous therapies is isotretinoin. However, its use may lead to adverse changes in the serum lipid profile and increased levels of transaminases. In this study, we evaluated the effect of supplementation with evening primrose oil in acne vulgaris patients treated with isotretinoin on blood lipid parameters and transaminase activity. Methods: Study participants were randomly assigned to two treatments: conventional with isotretinoin (25 patients) and novel with isotretinoin combined with evening primrose oil (4 × 510 mg/day; 25 patients) for 9 months. Results: Compared to isotretinoin treatment, isotretinoin treatment combined with evening primrose oil had a positive effect on TCH concentrations (mean: 198 vs. 161, p < 0.001), LDL (95.9 vs. 60.2, p < 0.001), HDL (51.0 vs. 48.0, p < 0.001), TG (114 vs. 95.0, p < 0.001), ALT (24.0 vs. 22.0, p < 0.001), and AST (28.0 vs. 22.0, p < 0.001), but had no effect on the energy and ingredient content of the diets (p > 0.05) after treatment. Conclusion: Evening primrose oil was found to have beneficial effects on lipid profiles and transaminase activity during isotretinoin treatment. However, longer studies are needed to make more reliable decisions regarding the use of evening primrose oil and its safety in clinical practice. The evening primrose oil treatment group also showed a reduction in dietary energy due to a reduction in dietary protein and carbohydrates.

Effect of supplementation with Chlorella vulgaris on lipid profile in adults: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Complement Ther Med 2022; 66:102822. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize available findings on the effect of Chlorella vulgaris supplementation on lipid profile in adults. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). SETTING This study followed 2020 PRISMA guideline. We performed a systematic search in the online databases to identify relevant articles and then, extracted required data from each paper for the meta-analysis. Random-effects models were used to obtain overall mean difference (MD) comparing Chlorella vulgaris supplementation with a control group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Blood lipids including triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, and HDL-C. RESULTS In total, 10 RCTs with a total sample size of 539 adults (264 in the Chlorella vulgaris group and 275 in the control group) were included. Of the 10 RCTs, four had a low risk of bias for all aspects of the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Also, only two studies determined the chlorella content, purity, potency, and contamination of the supplements used in the intervention. Combining results from these studies showed a summary MD of -2.11 mg/dL (95% CI: -7.28 to 3.06) for TG, -7.47 mg/dL (95% CI: -12.98 to -1.96) for TC, -7.71 mg/dL (95% CI: -14.05 to -1.37) for LDL-C, and -0.45 mg/dL (95% CI: -0.67 to 1.57) for HDL-C, indicating a beneficial effect of Chlorella vulgaris supplementation on TC and LDL-C levels. Based on the dose-response analysis, the reducing effect of Chlorella vulgaris supplementation on LDL-C levels was seen at the dosages between zero and 1500 mg/d (P for non-linearity= 0.01), whereas in higher amounts, this effect was not significant. CONCLUSION We found that Chlorella vulgaris supplementation had a beneficial effect on TC and LDL-C levels with no significant effect on TG and HDL-C levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is one of the major public health concerns. Prediabetes can increase the risk of developing some non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Given the increasing trend of prediabetes, it is critical to control it and prevent its complications. Curcumin is a major bioactive component of turmeric. Zinc is an antioxidant nutrient. The present trial aimed to evaluate the effect of curcumin and zinc co-supplementation along with a loss-weight diet on serum lipid profiles in overweight or obese patients with prediabetes. METHODS Eighty-four participants were randomized to four groups (curcumin (500 mg/day), zinc (30 mg/day), "curcumin and zinc", and placebo) for 90 days. Serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides (TG), non-HDL, HDL/LDL ratio, weight, BMI, waist circumstance (WC), hip circumstance (HC), physical activity (PA) and dietary intake were determined pre and post-intervention. This study will be conducted at Yazd Diabetes Research Clinic, Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences. RESULTS Totally, 82 participants were included in the final analysis. After the adjusted PA effect, changes in serum TG (adjusted p = 0.001), LDL (adjusted p = 0.035), non-HDL (adjusted p = 0.003), HDL/LDL ratio (adjusted p = 0.002), and HDL (adjusted p < 0.0001) revealed a significant difference between the groups. However, the changes in weight (adjusted p = 0.004) and BMI (adjusted p = 0.006) were significant but the changes in dietary intake, PA, WC, and HC were non-significant (adjusted p ≥ 0.05). Despite that there was a significant difference for post-intervention HDL levels (adjusted p = 0.016), other lipid profiles showed no significant difference (adjusted p ≥ 0.05). CONCLUSION The beneficial effects of "curcumin and zinc" co-supplementation was reported for the changes of some lipid profiles (TG, LDL, HDL, non-HDL, and HDL to LDL ratio), BMI, and weight with no positive effects on TC, dietary intake, PA, WC, and HC. Therefore, it may play a potential role in the prevention of macro and microvascular complications. Trial registration The project is a registered clinical trial (Registration number: IRCT20190902044671N1, Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT), registered October 11, 2019.

Abstract
Zinc is an essential micronutrient for human health and is involved in various biological functions, such as growth, metabolism, and immune function. In recent years, research on intracellular zinc dynamics has progressed, and it has become clear that zinc transporters strictly control intracellular zinc localization, zinc regulates the functions of various proteins and signal transduction pathways as a second messenger similar to calcium ions, and intracellular zinc dyshomeostasis is associated with impaired insulin synthesis, secretion, sensitivity, lipid metabolism, and vascular function. Numerous animal and human studies have shown that zinc deficiency may be associated with the risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and zinc administration might be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of these diseases. Therefore, an understanding of zinc biology may help the establishment of novel strategies for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and CVDs. This review will summarize the current knowledge on the role of zinc homeostasis in the pathogenesis of diabetes and atherosclerosis and will discuss the potential of zinc in the prevention of these diseases.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Insulin action of reducing blood glucose has been found to be enhanced by trace elements. Material and Methods: This was a cross sectional study including 150 patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and 50 controls. Serum concentrations of zinc, copper, chromium, selenium and magnesium was measured by colorimetric kit. Fasting Blood Glucose and Glycated Haemoglobin (HbA1c) were assayed using the standard kit. Results: Out of 150 patients, 85.4% (n = 128) of the cases had uncontrolled blood sugar with HbA1c ≥7 and only 14.6% (n = 22) had good control of blood sugar with HbA1c <7%. Hypertension (42%) and hypothyroidism (14%) were the most commonly associated comorbidities among patients with T2DM. Following percentage of diabetic patients had complications such as peripheral neuropathy (45.3%), diabetic retinopathy (36.7%), coronary artery disease (20.7%), diabetic nephropathy (17.3%), peripheral vascular disease (8.7%), and cerebrovascular accident (6%) respectively. The mean level of zinc, copper, selenium and magnesium was significantly lower in patients with T2DM than the control cases (62.89 vs. 74.95 μg/dL, P < 0.05; 116.30 vs. 150.39 μg/dL, P < 0.001; 8.57 vs. 16.16 μg/dL, P < 0.001; 1.92 vs. 2.31 mg/dL, P < 0.05, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that there was a significant trend between levels of zinc, copper, selenium, and magnesium and the prevalence of T2DM. Conclusions: The levels of selenium, zinc, copper, and magnesium were significantly lower in patients with T2DM when compared to healthy counterparts.

Abstract
The zinc element is an essential nutrient for human health. Zinc is involved in the glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism and antioxidant processes in biological pathways. Zinc deficiency can lead to several chronic liver diseases. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases where zinc deficiency plays a critical role in pathogenesis. Human and animal studies showed that both NAFLD risk factors (i.e., insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, obesity, hypertension) and NAFLD itself are associated with decreased blood levels of zinc. Additionally, endoplasmic reticulum stress and inflammation due to unfolded protein response, inadequate dietary zinc intake, and decreased zinc absorption from the gastrointestinal tract can result in zinc deficiency leading to NAFLD. Herein, we reviewed the mechanistic links between zinc deficiency and NAFLD development and the role of zinc in the prevention and treatment of NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Pervious epidemiological evidence on the associations of selenium, zinc with lipid profile and glycemic indices was contradictory. The aim of this study was to investigate whether selenium and zinc were casually associated with lipid profile and glycemic indices using mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHOD A two-sample MR was used to evaluate the causal-effect estimations. Summary statistics for selenium, zinc, lipids and glycemic indices were retrieved from previous large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that independently and strongly associated with the selenium and zinc were selected as the instrumental variables. The casual estimates were calculated using inverse variance weighted method (IVW), with weighted median, MR-Egger, and MR-PRESSO test as sensitivity analysis, respectively. RESULTS In the standard IVW analysis, per SD increment in selenium was associated with an 0.077 mmol/L decrease of TC (95 %CI: -0.102,-0.052) and 0.074 mmol/L of LDL-C (95 %CI: -0.1,-0.048). Suggestive casual associations were found between selenium and insulin or HbA1c. With IVW method, per SD increase in selenium was associated with an 0.023 mmol/L increase of insulin (95 %CI: 0.001,0.045), and an 0.013 mmol/L increase of HbA1c (95 %CI: 0.003,0.023). The results were robust in the sensitivity analysis. Zinc was not casually associated with any of lipid and glycemic markers. CONCLUSION Our MR analysis provides evidence of the potential causal effect of Se on beneficial lipid profile, including decreased TC and LDL-C. Furthermore, suggestive casual evidence was suggested between Se and increased serum HbA1c levels. Careful consideration is required for the protective effects of Se supplementation. No casual-effect association was found between Zn and any indices of the lipid and glucose parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of chromium supplementation on lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS A systematic search was performed in Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane library and PubMed databases to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to the effect of chromium supplementation on lipid profile in patients with T2DM, up to June 2020. Meta-analyses were performed using the random-effects model, and I2 index was used to evaluate heterogeneity. RESULTS The primary search yielded 725 publications. 24 RCTs (with 28 effect size) were eligible. Our meta-analysis indicated that chromium supplementation resulted in a significant decrease in serum levels of triglyceride (TG) (MD: -6.54 mg/dl, 95 % CI: -13.08 to -0.00, P = 0.050) and total cholesterol (TC) (WMD: -7.77 mg/dl, 95 % CI: -11.35 to -4.18, P < 0.001). Furthermore, chromium significantly increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (WMD: 2.23 mg/dl, 95 % CI: 0.07-4.40, P = 0.043) level. However, chromium supplementation did not have significant effects on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (WMD: -8.54 mg/dl, 95 % CI: -19.58 to 2.49, P = 0.129) level. CONCLUSION Chromium supplementation may significantly improve lipid profile in patients with T2DM by decreasing TG and TC and increasing HDL. However, based on our analysis, chromium failed to affect LDL. It should be noted that the lipid-lowering properties of chromium supplementation were small and may not reach clinical importance.

Abstract
To efficiently prevent diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), we have explored and confirmed that metallothionein (MT) prevents DCM by attenuating oxidative stress, and increasing expression of proteins associated with glucose metabolism. To determine whether Akt2 expression is critical to MT prevention of DCM, mice with either global Akt2 gene deletion (Akt2-KO), or cardiomyocyte-specific overexpressing MT gene (MT-TG) or both combined (MT-TG/Akt2-KO) were used. Akt2-KO mice exhibited symptoms of DCM (cardiac remodelling and dysfunction), and reduced expression of glycogen and glucose metabolism-related proteins, despite an increase in total Akt (t-Akt) phosphorylation. Cardiac MT overexpression in MT-TG/Akt2-KO mice prevented DCM and restored glucose metabolism-related proteins expression and baseline t-Akt phosphorylation. Furthermore, phosphorylation of ERK1/2 increased in the heart of MT-TG/Akt2-KO mice, compared with Akt2-KO mice. As ERK1/2 has been implicated in the regulation of glucose transport and metabolism this increase could potentially underlie MT protective effect in MT-TG/Akt2-KO mice. Therefore, these results show that although our previous work has shown that MT preserving Akt2 activity is sufficient to prevent DCM, in the absence of Akt2 MT may stimulate alternative or downstream pathways protecting from DCM in a type 2 model of diabetes, and that this protection may be associated with the ERK activation pathway.

Abstract
Since the discovery of manifest Zn deficiency in 1961, the increasing number of studies demonstrated the association between altered Zn status and multiple diseases. In this chapter, we provide a review of the most recent advances on the role of Zn in health and disease (2010-20), with a special focus on the role of Zn in neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders, diabetes and obesity, male and female reproduction, as well as COVID-19. In parallel with the revealed tight association between ASD risk and severity and Zn status, the particular mechanisms linking Zn2+ and ASD pathogenesis like modulation of synaptic plasticity through ProSAP/Shank scaffold, neurotransmitter metabolism, and gut microbiota, have been elucidated. The increasing body of data indicate the potential involvement of Zn2+ metabolism in neurodegeneration. Systemic Zn levels in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease were found to be reduced, whereas its sequestration in brain may result in modulation of amyloid β and α-synuclein processing with subsequent toxic effects. Zn2+ was shown to possess adipotropic effects through the role of zinc transporters, zinc finger proteins, and Zn-α2-glycoprotein in adipose tissue physiology, underlying its particular role in pathogenesis of obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2. Recent findings also contribute to further understanding of the role of Zn2+ in spermatogenesis and sperm functioning, as well as oocyte development and fertilization. Finally, Zn2+ was shown to be the potential adjuvant therapy in management of novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), underlining the perspectives of zinc in management of old and new threats.

Abstract
Folic acid supplementation has received considerable attention in the literature, yet there is a large discrepancy in its effects on lipid markers in adults. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis of 38 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluated the effects of folic acid supplementation on triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations in a cohort of 21,787 participants. A systematic search current as of March 2021 was performed in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase using relevant keywords to identify eligible studies. A fix or random-effects model was used to estimate the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Thirty-four RCTs were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled analysis revealed that serum TG (WMD: -9.78 mg/dL; 95% CI: -15.5 to -4.00; p = 0.001, I2=0.0%, p = 0.965) and TC (WMD: -3.96 mg/dL; 95% CI: -6.71 to -1.21; p = 0.005, I2=46.9%, p = 0.001) concentrations were significantly reduced following folic acid supplementation compared to placebo. However, folic acid supplementation did not affect serum concentrations of LDL (WMD: -0.97 mg/dL; 95% CI: -6.82 to 4.89; p = 0.746, I2=60.6%, p < 0.001) or HDL cholesterol (WMD: 0.44 mg/dL; 95% CI: -0.53 to 1.41; p = 0.378, I2= 0.0%, p = 0.831). A significant dose-response relationship was observed between the dose of folic acid supplementation and serum concentrations of HDL cholesterols (r = 2.22, p = 0.047). Folic acid supplementation reduced serum concentrations of TG and TC without affecting LDL or HDL cholesterols. Future large RCTs on various populations are needed to show further beneficial effects of folic acid supplementation on lipid profile.
