Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in fish tissue may be an indicator of plastic contamination in marine habitats

Review of microplastics and chemical risk posed by plastic packaging on the marine environment to inform the Global Plastics Treaty

Plastic overproduction and the resulting increase in consumption has made plastic pollution ubiquitous in all ecosystems. Recognizing this, the United Nations (UN) has started negotiations to establish a global treaty to end plastic pollution, especially in the marine environment. The basis of the treaty has been formulated in terms of turning off the tap, signaling the will to prevent plastic pollution at its source. Based on the distribution of plastic production by sector, the plastic packaging sector consumes the most plastic. The volume and variety of chemicals used in plastic packaging, most of which is single-use, is a major concern. Single-use plastics including packaging is one of the most dominant sources of plastic pollution. Plastic waste causes pollution in water, air and soil by releasing harmful chemicals into the environment and can also lead to exposure through contamination of food with micro- and nano-plastic particles and chemicals through packaging. Marine life and humans alike face risks from plastic uptake through bioaccumulation and biomagnification. While the contribution of plastics ingested to chemical pollution is relatively minor in comparison to other pathways of exposure, the effect of plastic waste on marine life and human consumption of seafood is beyond question. To reduce the long-term impact of plastic, it is crucial to establish a global legally binding instrument to ensure the implementation of upstream rather than downstream solutions. This will help to mitigate the impact of both chemicals and microplastics, including from packaging, on the environment.

Assessing the impact of simulated ocean acidification on the photodegradation of selected microplastics

This study investigated the impact of ocean acidification on the photodegradation of three microplastics (MPs): polypropylene (PP), expanded polystyrene (EPS), and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), under accelerated UV radiation at three pH levels (i.e., 8.1, 7.8, and 7.5), simulating marine conditions. The acidification system simulated current and projected future environmental conditions. As expected, an increase in partial pressure of CO2, total inorganic carbon, bicarbonate ion, and CO2 resulted in more acidic pH levels, with the reverse being true for the carbonate ion. Structural changes of MPs were evaluated, revealing that all weathered samples underwent higher degradation rate compared to the virgin samples. The oxidation state and crystallinity of PP and EVA MPs were higher in samples exposed to the lowest pH, whereas no significant increase in the degradation rate of EPS samples was observed. Saltwater acidification in this study contributed to enhance the photo-oxidation of MPs depending on their polymeric composition.

The effect of additives on the biodegradation of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) in marine field trials

The persistence of conventional fossil fuel-derived plastics in marine ecosystems has raised significant environmental concerns. Biodegradable plastics are being explored as an alternative. This study investigates the biodegradation behaviour in two marine environments of melt-extruded sheets of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) bioplastic as well as blends of PHBV with a non-toxic plasticiser (triethyl citrate, TEC) and composites of PHBV with wood flour. Samples were submerged for up to 35 weeks in two subtropical marine conditions: on the sandy seabed in the sublittoral benthic zone and the sandy seabed of an open air mesocosm with pumped seawater. Rates of biodegradation, lag times and times to 95 % mass loss (T95) were determined through mass loss data and Gompertz modelling. Mechanisms of biodegradation were studied through changes in molecular weight, mechanical properties and surface features. Results reveal a rapid biodegradation rate for all PHBV samples, demonstrating a range of specific biodegradation rates relative to exposed surface area of 0.03 ± 0.01 to 0.09 ± 0.04 mg.d-1.cm-2. This rapid rate of biodegradation meant that the subtle variations in biodegradation mechanisms across different sample thicknesses and additive compositions had little effect on overall lifetimes, with the T95 for most samples being around 250-350 days, regardless of site, highlighting the robust biodegradability of PHBV in seawater. It was only the PHBV-wood flour composite that showed faster biodegradation, and that was only in the exposed ocean site. The mesocosm site was otherwise shown to be a good model for the open ocean, with very comparable biodegradation rates and changes in mechanical properties over time.

The Known and Unknown: Investigating the Carcinogenic Potential of Plastic Additives

Microplastics are routinely ingested and inhaled by humans and other organisms. Despite the frequency of plastic exposure, little is known about its health consequences. Of particular concern are plastic additives─chemical compounds that are intentionally or unintentionally added to plastics to improve functionality or as residual components of plastic production. Additives are often loosely bound to the plastic polymer and may be released during plastic exposures. To better understand the health effects of plastic additives, we performed a comprehensive literature search to compile a list of 2,712 known plastic additives. Then, we performed an integrated toxicogenomic analysis of these additives, utilizing cancer classifications and carcinogenic expression pathways as a primary focus. Screening these substances across two chemical databases revealed two key observations: (1) over 150 plastic additives have known carcinogenicity and (2) the majority (∼90%) of plastic additives lack data on carcinogenic end points. Analyses of additive usage patterns pinpointed specific polymers, functions, and products in which carcinogenic additives reside. Based on published chemical-gene interactions, both carcinogenic additives and additives with unknown carcinogenicity impacted similar biological pathways. The predominant pathways involved DNA damage, apoptosis, the immune response, viral diseases, and cancer. This study underscores the urgent need for a systematic and comprehensive carcinogenicity assessment of plastic additives and regulatory responses to mitigate the potential health risks of plastic exposure.

Plastic additives in the ocean: Use of a comprehensive dataset for meta-analysis and method development

In excess of 13,000 chemicals are added to plastics ('additives') to improve performance, durability, and production of plastic products. They are categorized into numerous chemical classes including flame retardants, light stabilizers, antioxidants, and plasticizers. While research on plastic additives in the marine environment has increased over the past decade, there is a lack of methodological standardization. To direct future measurement of plastic additives, we compiled a first-of-its-kind dataset of literature assessing plastic additives in marine environments, delineated by sample type (plastic debris, seawater, sediment, biota). Using this dataset, we performed a meta-analysis to summarize the state of the science. Currently, our dataset includes 217 publications published between 1978 and May 2023. The majority of publications analyzed plastic additives in biota collected from Europe and Asia. Analyses concentrated on plasticizers, brominated flame retardants, and bisphenols. Common sample preparation techniques included Solvent - Agitation extraction for plastic, sediment, and biota samples, and Solid Phase Extraction for seawater samples with dichloromethane and solvent mixtures including dichloromethane as the organic extraction solvent. Finally, most analyses were performed utilizing gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. There are a variety of data gaps illuminated by this meta-analysis, most notably the small number of compounds that have been targeted for detection compared to the large number of additives used in plastic production. The provided dataset facilitates future investigation of trends in plastic additive concentration data in the marine environment (allowing for comparison to toxicity thresholds) and acts as a starting point for optimizing and harmonizing plastic additive analytical methods.

Bisphenol A sorption on commercial polyvinyl chloride microplastics: Effects of UV-aging, biofilm colonization and additives on plastic behaviour in the environment

Chemical additives are important components in commercial microplastics and their leaching behaviour has been widely studied. However, little is known about the potential effect of additives on the adsorption/desorption behaviour of pollutants on microplastics and their subsequent role as vectors for pollutant transport in the environment. In this study, two types of commercial polyvinyl chloride (PVC1 and PVC2) microplastics were aged by UV irradiation and biotic modification via biofilm colonization to investigate the adsorption and desorption behaviour of bisphenol A (BPA). Surface cracks and new functional groups (e.g., O-H) were found on PVC1 after UV irradiation, which increased available adsorption sites and enhanced H‒bonding interaction, resulting in an adsorption capacity increase from 1.28 μg/L to 1.85 μg/L. However, the adsorption and desorption capacity not showed significant changes for PVC2, which might be related to the few characteristic changes after UV aging with the protection of light stabilizers and antioxidants. The adsorption capacity ranged from 1.28 μg/L to 2.06 μg/L for PVC1 and PVC2 microplastics, and increased to 1.62 μg/L-2.95 μg/L after colonization by biofilms. The increased adsorption ability might be related to the N-H functional group, amide groups generated by microorganisms enhancing the affinity for BPA. The opposite effect was observed for desorption. Plasticizers can be metabolized during biofilm formation processes and might play an important role in microorganism colonization. In addition, antioxidants and UV stabilizers might also indirectly influence the colonization of microorganisms' on microplastics by controlling the degree to which PVC microplastics age under UV. The amount of biomass loading on the microplastics would further alter the adsorption/desorption behaviour of contaminants. This study provides important new insights into the evaluation of the fate of plastic particles in natural environments.

Can plastic related chemicals be indicators of plastic ingestion in an Arctic seabird?

For decades, the northern fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) has been found to ingest and accumulate high loads of plastic due to its feeding ecology and digestive tract morphology. Plastic ingestion can lead to both physical and toxicological effects as ingested plastics can be a pathway for hazardous chemicals into seabirds' tissues. Many of these contaminants are ubiquitous in the environment and the contribution of plastic ingestion to the uptake of those contaminants in seabirds' tissues is poorly known. In this study we aimed at quantifying several plastic-related chemicals (PRCs) -PBDE209, several dechloranes and several phthalate metabolites- and assessing their relationship with plastic burdens (both mass and number) to further investigate their potential use as proxies for plastic ingestion. Blood samples from fulmar fledglings and liver samples from both fledgling and non-fledgling fulmars were collected for PRC quantification. PBDE209 and dechloranes were quantified in 39 and 33 livers, respectively while phthalates were quantified in plasma. Plastic ingestion in these birds has been investigated previously and showed a higher prevalence in fledglings. PBDE209 was detected in 28.2 % of the liver samples. Dechlorane 602 was detected in all samples while Dechloranes 601 and 604 were not detected in any sample. Dechlorane 603 was detected in 11 individuals (33%). Phthalates were detected in one third of the analysed blood samples. Overall, no significant positive correlation was found between plastic burdens and PRC concentrations. However, a significant positive relationship between PBDE209 and plastic number was found in fledglings, although likely driven by one outlier. Our study shows the complexity of PRC exposure, the timeline of plastic ingestion and subsequent uptake of PRCs into the tissues in birds, the additional exposure of these chemicals via their prey, even in a species ingesting high loads of plastic.

Feeding ecology of the short-headed lanternfish Diaphus brachycephalus and Warming's lanternfish Ceratoscopelus warmingii (Myctophidae) in the South China Sea

We report on the feeding ecology of two species, the short-headed lanternfish Diaphus brachycephalus and Warming's lanternfish Ceratoscopelus warmingii, using data collected over five surveys from 2015 to 2017 in the open South China Sea. D. brachycephalus feed mainly on copepods, with few differences in food composition between different-sized individuals; the diet of C. warmingii is more diverse, including crustacean zooplankton, gelatinous animals, and Mollusca, and differs significantly between fishes >55 mm in body length and smaller fishes. Interspecific competition for food between these two species is not strong, while intraspecific competition may be more intense in D. brachycephalus than in C. warmingii. Trophic levels of D. brachycephalus (3.46) and C. warmingii (3.38) identify both species as third-trophic-level lower carnivores. The diel feeding patterns of D. brachycephalus and C. warmingii differ: the former feeds actively both day and night when food is plentiful, and feeds primarily in the upper layer at night and in the mesopelagic layer during the daytime, and the latter ascends into the upper 100 m at night to feed, but stomach fullness is lower than D. brachycephalus. Dry-body-weight daily ration estimates for D. brachycephalus range from 5.19% to 16.46%, and those for C. warmingii range from 1.38% to 4.39%.

Anthropogenic particle concentrations and fluxes in an urban river are temporally variable and impacted by storm events

Anthropogenic particles (AP), which include microplastics and other synthetic, semisynthetic, and anthropogenically modified materials, are pollutants of concern in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Rivers are important conduits and retention sites for AP, and time series data on the movement of these particles in lotic ecosystems are needed to assess the role of rivers in the global AP cycle. Much research assessing AP pollution extrapolates stream loads based on single time point measurements, but lotic ecosystems are highly variable over time (e.g., seasonality and storm events). The accuracy of models describing AP dynamics in rivers is constrained by the limited studies that examine how frequent changes in discharge drive particle retention and transport. This study addressed this knowledge gap by using automated, high-resolution sampling to track AP concentrations and fluxes during multiple storm events in an urban river (Milwaukee River) and comparing these measurements to commonly monitored water quality metrics. AP concentrations and fluxes varied significantly across four storm events, highlighting the temporal variability of AP dynamics. When data from the sampling periods were pooled, there were increases in particle concentration and flux during the early phases of the storms, suggesting that floods may flush AP into the river and/or resuspend particles from the benthic zone. AP flux was closely linked to river discharge, suggesting large loads of AP are delivered downstream during storms. Unexpectedly, AP concentrations were not correlated with other simultaneously measured water quality metrics, including total suspended solids, fecal coliforms, chloride, nitrate, and sulfate, indicating that these metrics cannot be used to estimate AP. These data will contribute to more accurate models of particle dynamics in rivers and global plastic export to oceans. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Anthropogenic particle (AP) concentrations and fluxes in an urban river varied across four storm events. AP concentrations and fluxes were the highest during the early phases of the storms. Storms increased AP transport downstream compared with baseflow. AP concentrations did not correlate with other water quality metrics during storms.

Microplastics may induce food dilution and endocrine disrupting effects in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), and decrease offspring quality

Microplastics are a complex environmental contaminant that have been reported to cause a variety of impacts, although the mechanism of these impacts remains unclear. Many studies have investigated either sub-organismal or apical endpoints, while very few have attempted to integrate and link endpoints seen at multiple levels of organization. Here, we exposed fathead minnows to microplastics for their entire lifecycle, from the egg stage through to reproduction, and raised a subset of the offspring in clean water. We show that both preconsumer and environmentally sourced microplastics impact adult growth, lipid storage, and external colouration, suggesting a potential food dilution effect. Environmentally sourced microplastics, but not preconsumer microplastics, had further endocrine disrupting impacts on the parental generation and their offspring in the low concentration treatments such that egg production began later, eggs were less viable, and the offspring had higher rates of malformation. Low dose effects are a typical dose-response for endocrine disrupting contaminants. These results suggest that microplastic exposure, at concentrations relevant to what is being found in the environment, has potential implications for forage fish populations. Our findings also highlight the importance of using an integrative approach to understanding the mechanisms behind how and why microplastics impact organisms.

Synthetic and natural rubber associated chemicals drive functional and structural changes as well as adaptations to antibiotics in in vitro marine microbiomes

The leaching of additives from plastics and elastomers (rubbers) has raised concerns due to their potential negative impacts on the environment and the development of antibiotic resistance. In this study, we investigated the effects of chemicals extracted from two types of rubber on microbiomes derived from a benthic sea urchin and two pelagic fish species. Additionally, we examined whether bacterial communities preconditioned with rubber-associated chemicals displayed adaptations to antibiotics. At the highest tested concentrations of chemicals, we observed reduced maximum growth rates and yields, prolonged lag phases, and increased alpha diversity. While the effects on alpha and beta diversity were not always conclusive, several bacterial genera were significantly influenced by chemicals from the two rubber sources. Subsequent exposure of sea urchin microbiomes preconditioned with rubber chemicals to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin resulted in decreased maximum growth rates. This indicates a more sensitive microbiome to ciprofloxacin when preconditioned with rubber chemicals. Although no significant interaction effects between rubber chemicals and ciprofloxacin exposure were observed in bacterial alpha and beta diversity, we observed log-fold changes in two bacterial genera in response to ciprofloxacin exposure. These findings highlight the structural and functional alterations in microbiomes originating from various marine species when exposed to rubber-associated chemicals and underscore the potential risks posed to marine life.

Review on impacts of micro- and nano-plastic on aquatic ecosystems and mitigation strategies

The rapid proliferation of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in our environment presents a formidable hazard to both biotic and abiotic components. These pollutants originate from various sources, including commercial production and the breakdown of larger plastic particles. Widespread contamination of the human body, agroecosystems, and animals occurs through ingestion, entry into the food chain, and inhalation. Consequently, the imperative to devise innovative methods for MPs and NPs remediation has become increasingly apparent. This review explores the current landscape of strategies proposed to mitigate the escalating threats associated with plastic waste. Among the array of methods in use, microbial remediation emerges as a promising avenue for the decomposition and reclamation of MPs and NPs. In response to the growing concern, numerous nations have already implemented or are in the process of adopting regulations to curtail MPs and NPs in aquatic habitats. This paper aims to address this gap by delving into the environmental fate, behaviour, transport, ecotoxicity, and management of MPs and NPs particles within the context of nanoscience, microbial ecology, and remediation technologies. Key findings of this review encompass the intricate interdependencies between MPs and NPs and their ecosystems. The ecological impact, from fate to ecotoxicity, is scrutinized in light of the burgeoning environmental imperative. As a result, this review not only provides an encompassing understanding of the ecological ramifications of MPs and NPs but also highlights the pressing need for further research, innovation, and informed interventions.

The deep dive of organohalogen compounds: Bioaccumulation in the top predators of mesopelagic trophic webs, pygmy and dwarf sperm whales, from the Southwestern Atlantic ocean

Kogia sima and Kogia breviceps are apex predators of mesopelagic trophic webs being far from most anthropogenic threats. However, chemical pollutants and naturally synthesized compounds may travel long distances. This study aimed to use kogiid whales as sentinels of mesopelagic trophic webs in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and metabolites, mirex, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) and hexabromobenzene (HBB), and the naturally produced methoxylated BDE (MeO-BDEs) were determined in the blubber of 16 K. sima and 15 K. breviceps. Among the organochlorine compounds, DDTs were the main group found in K. sima and in K. breviceps (1636.6 and 3983.3 ng g-1 lw, respective medians), followed by PCBs (425.9 and 956.1 ng g-1 lw, respectively), mirex (184.1 and 375.6 ng g-1 lw, respectively), and HCB (132.4 and 340.3 ng g-1 lw, respectively). As for the organobromine, the natural MeO-BDEs were predominant (1676.7 and 501.6 ng g-1 lw, respectively), followed by PBDEs (13.6 and 10.3 ng g-1 lw, respectively) and PBEB (2.2 and 2.9 ng g-1 lw, respectively). In general, POPs concentration was higher in K. breviceps than in K. sima. Conversely, MeO-BDEs concentration was higher in K. sima than in K. breviceps. Differences in concentrations in these sympatric odontocetes were attributed to distinct species, sampling sites, and biological parameters and suggest some level of niche segregation. It is noteworthy the long-range reach and bioaccumulation of these synthetic compounds in an unexplored habitat, that present an increasing economic interest.

Microplastic distribution in different tissues of small pelagic fish of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean

The accumulation of microplastics (MP) by marine species of ecological and commercial interest represents a major concern, particularly for those present in human diet. This study analysed the accumulation of MP in three species of coastal pelagic fish with high commercial value, European sardine (Sardina pilchardus), European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), collected along the Western coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The gastrointestinal tract (GT), gills and muscle were analysed and a total of 504 particles were observed. MP were found in all target tissues of the studied species. Horse mackerel exhibited significantly higher concentrations of microplastics in GT compared to other tissues. On the other hand, anchovies and sardines had significantly lower microplastic concentrations in their muscle tissue. The accumulation of microplastics in the gills showed a significant difference between species, with anchovy having significantly higher concentrations compared to horse mackerel. Horse mackerel had the highest percentage of individuals with microplastics in their GT (92 %), followed by sardine (75 %) and anchovy (50 %). Horse mackerel was also the species that registered the highest percentage of individuals with particles in the muscle (63 %), followed by anchovy (40 %) and finally sardine (39 %). MP in the gills of European sardines and anchovies were similar to those found in water samples. The majority of MP found measured <0.5 mm and were blue fibers. Furthermore, the presence of MP in the GT showed a weak and moderated significant negative correlation with the Fulton Condition Index in horse mackerel and European sardine. Our study confirms the ubiquitous extent of MP contamination in the ocean and provides baseline evidence of MP tissue distribution in three small pelagic fish species with distinct feeding behaviour, while correlating this with the presence of MP in water. Importantly, the results of this study contribute to improve the understanding of biological partitioning of MP in open sea fish species with high commercial relevance, and the potential deleterious effects of our increasingly MP contaminated world.

Anthropogenic debris ingestion in a tropical seabird community: Insights from taxonomy and foraging distribution

Oceans have been considered as an unlimited supply of goods and services, but resource extraction and waste disposal became ubiquitous and have been damaging the health of marine ecosystems. Finding suitable sentinel species of the human impacts on the oceans is thus imperative, since they may work as early warnings of disruptive situations. In this study, we investigated how taxonomy and foraging distribution influenced the occurrence of anthropogenic debris among five seabird species inhabiting the tropical Atlantic region. Occurrence of anthropogenic debris was assessed using faeces of breeding individuals as a proxy of ingestion. A total of 268 particles were extracted from all samples. The categories "fragments" and "fibres", as well as the colour "blue", were the most prevalent characteristics across species. There was a high diversity of polymers from cellulosic particles to synthetic plastics (Anthropogenic Cellulosic 26.9 %; Polyester 7.7 %; Varnish 5.8 %; Polypropylene 1.9 %). Species with a more coastal foraging strategy exhibited higher occurrence and number of anthropogenic debris when compared to species foraging comparably more in pelagic areas. This suggests that anthropogenic debris are more prevalent in coastal foraging areas, where human activities occur in higher number and frequency (e.g., fisheries) and sources of freshwater input from inland are at close distance. These results provide more evidence to the growing perception on the ubiquity and diversity of anthropogenic debris in the marine environment, and further support the usefulness of using seabirds as bio-indicators of anthropogenic pollution in both neritic and oceanic regions.

Profile, Tissue Distribution, and Time Trend of Bisphenol Plastic Additives in Freshwater Wildlife of the Pearl River Ecosystem, China

Plastic-related contaminants in the environment have attracted increasing attention, with plastic pollution becoming a serious issue globally. The present study investigated the potential bioaccumulation and biotransfer of bisphenol (BP) compounds that are widely added in various products such as plastics and other products in a freshwater ecosystem, China. Among commonly applied 14 BP analogues, bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS) were predominant, representing 64%-100% of the total concentrations of BPs (ΣBPs) in freshwater wildlife. Both the concentrations and analogue profiles in the fish showed seasonal differences and species dependence. Higher BP concentrations were observed in fish collected during the dry season than the wet season. Higher percentages of non-BPA analogues (e.g., BPS and BPF) were observed in fish collected during the wet season. Pelagic species accumulated notably higher levels of BPs than midwater and bottom species. The liver generally contained the highest ΣBPs, followed successively by the swim bladder, belly fat, and dorsal muscle. The analogue profile also showed some differences among tissues, varying by species and season. Lower ΣBPs but higher percentages of non-BPA analogues were observed in female than male common carp. Time trends of the BPA concentration in fish varied by species, probably related to habitats and diets of the fish. Habitats, feeding behaviors, and trophic transfer may have significant impacts on exposure of wildlife to BPs in natural ecosystems. The BPs did not demonstrate strong potential for bioaccumulation. More research is warranted about metabolism and transgenerational transfer of BPs in wildlife to fully reveal the bioaccumulation and consequently ecological risks of these chemicals in the environment. Effect of PET microplastics on the growth, digestive enzymes, and intestinal flora of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus

Marine microplastic (MP) pollution is becoming a serious problem and their potentially toxic effects on marine organisms have attracted much attention. Sea cucumber is very important for the safety and health of marine ecosystems. However, there have been relatively few studies on the effects of microplastic pollution on sea cucumbers at environmentally-related concentrations and under controlled conditions. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics (particle sizes: 0.5-45 μm, 2-200 μm, and 20-300 μm; and three concentration levels for each particle size, approximately 103, 104, and 105 particles/kg) on the basic biological indicators, intestinal digestive enzymes, and intestinal flora of Apostichopus japonicus after a 28-day feeding experiment. This study showed that environmentally-related and high concentrations of microplastics had little effect on A. japonicus. This study provides valuable reference information about the effects of marine microplastic pollution on sea cucumbers.

Occurrence and distribution of meso- and macroplastics in the water, sediment, and fauna of the Nile River, Egypt

The present study described the most recent findings concerning the abundance and distribution of plastic in water, sediment, and fauna in the Nile River of Upper Egypt as an interesting research point. The findings revealed that plastics were abundant in the water, sediments, fish, and crayfish throughout the sites. The Nagaa Hammadi site has the highest abundance of meso- and macroplastics in its water and sediment. African catfish had the highest abundance of meso- and macroplastics compared to the other species, while Nile tilapia had no meso- or macroplastics in its alimentary canal or gills in all sites. The Edfu site has the highest abundance of mesoplastics in the alimentary canals of African catfish, while the Nagaa Hammadi site has the highest abundance of mesoplastics in the gills, and macroplastics appeared only in the alimentary canal of African catfish from the El-wasta site. Only mesoplastics were found in the crayfish's alimentary canal, with the Nagaa Hammadi site having the highest abundance. No macroplastics were detected in the crayfish's gills or alimentary canal. Additionally, this work lets us understand how plastics behave in freshwater environments, and it is a step toward decision-makers taking appropriate measures to reduce their risk.

Improvement of biodegradation of PET microplastics with whole-cell biocatalyst by interface activation reinforcement

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is an important basic polymer, which was used widely in variety of fields. Due to its high crystallinity, compact structure and strong surface hydrophobicity, PET has prominent resistance to biodegradation. In recent years, microplastics, especially polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics, was considered as serious threaten to ecosystems. In this study, alkali-resistant bacteria were used as whole-cell catalysts to try to improve the biodegradation of PET microplastics by increasing the bio-interfacial activity of the polymer substrate. Surfactants were applicated to enhance interfacial activation of enzyme and PET interactions. And an integrated strategy was constructed based on alkali resistant bacteria to catalysis the hydrolysis of PET. The results showed that Tween 20 had the most obvious promoting effect among the four interfacial biocatalysts on biological-chemical combined hydrolysis of PET microplastics with whole-cell biocatalysts in alkaline environment. Obvious etching and fracture were observed on the PET fibre surface after biodegradation in presence of surfactant. The weight loss rate of PET substrate can reach 11.04% after 5 days of biodegradation. Thus, this research provides a promising method for efficient degradation of PET microplastics.

Prevalence of microplastics in commonly consumed fish species of the river Old Brahmaputra, Bangladesh

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive in aquatic environments, but inland waterbodies (rivers and floodplains) have received much less attention. The present study assesses the incidence of MPs in the gastrointestinal tracts of five commercially important edible fish species-two column feeders (n = 30) and three benthivores (n = 45) from upstream, midstream, and downstream of the Old Brahmaputra river in north-central Bangladesh. MPs were detected in 58.93% of fish, with the highest level in freshwater eel, Mastacembelus armatus (10.31 ± 0.75/fish). Fibers (49.03%) and pellets (28.02%) were the most frequent MPs. Nearly 72% MPs were smaller than 1 mm, and 50.97% were black. FTIR analysis showed 59% polyethelene (PE), followed by polyamide (40%) and unidentified (1%). MP ingestion was linked to fish size and weight, and a high incidence was recorded in the downstream river. Two omnivorous benthic fish ingest more MPs than others. The results corroborate the presence of MPs in the inland river and fish fauna and augment our understanding of heterogeneous MP uptake by fish.

Evaluation of levels and sources of microplastics and phthalic acid esters and their relationships in the atmosphere of highly industrialized and urbanized Gebze, Türkiye

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere and their relationship with other pollutants have been gaining attention due to both their ubiquity and threatening human health. As well phthalic acid esters (PAEs) regarding as plasticizers for being added in plastic materials are key role for plastic pollution. In this study, the concentrations and sources of airborne MPs together with major PAEs and their relationships were investigated for four seasons. MP particles <20 μm, constituting the majority of the samples, were successfully revealed by NR fluorescent analysis. As a result of the μATR-FTIR analyzes, it was seen that besides different polymer derivatives, dye-pigment types, some minerals and compounds, and abundant semi-synthetic fibers and natural fibers were also present. MPs concentration were found in the range of 7207-21,042 MP/m³ in summer, 7245-32,950 MP/m³ in autumn, 4035-58,270 MP/m³ in winter and 7275-37,094 MP/m³ in spring. For the same period, the concentrations of PAEs ranged from 9.24 to 115.21 ng/m³ with an average value of 38.08 ± 7.92 ng/m³. PMF was also applied and four factors were extracted. Factor 1, accounts 52.26 % and 23.27 % of the total PAEs and MPs variances, was attributed to PVC sources. Factor 2, explaining 64.98 % of the total MPs variance had the highest loading of MPs and moderate loadings of relatively low molecular weight of PAEs, was attributed to plastics and personal care products. Factor 3, explaining the 28.31 % of the total PAEs variance was laden with BBP, DnBP, DiBP and DEP and was attributed to various plastic input during the sampling campaign coming from the industrial activities. The last factor accounts for 11.65 % of the total PAEs variance and was dominated by DMEP and it was linked to a source of the activities performed in the laboratories of the university.

Anthropogenic litter in terrestrial flora and fauna: Is the situation as bad as in the ocean? A field study in Southern Germany on five meadows and 150 ruminants in comparison with marine debris

In contrast to the abundance of research on marine debris, terrestrial anthropogenic litter and its impacts are largely lacking scientific attention. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to find out whether ingested litter produces pathological consequences to the health of domestic ruminants, as it does in their relatives in the ocean, the cetaceans. For this purpose, five meadows (49°18'N, 10°24'E) with a total survey area of 139,050 m² as well as the gastric content of 100 slaughtered cattle and 50 slaughtered sheep have been examined for persistent man-made debris in Northern Bavaria, Germany. All the five meadows contained garbage, and plastics were always part of it. Including glass and metal, 521 persistent anthropogenic objects were detected altogether, equalling a litter density of 3747 items per km². Of the examined animals, 30.0% of the cattle and 6.0% of the sheep harboured anthropogenic foreign bodies in their gastric tract. As in the case of cetaceans, plastics were the most dominant litter material. Bezoars had formed around plastic fibres of agricultural origin in two young bulls, whereas pointed metal objects were associated in cattle with traumatic lesions in the reticulum and the tongue. Of all the ingested anthropogenic debris, 24 items (26.4%) had direct equivalents in the studied meadows. Comparing with marine litter, 28 items (30.8%) were also present in marine environments and 27 items (29.7%) were previously reported as foreign bodies in marine animals. At least in this study region, waste pollution affected terrestrial environments and domestic animals, with clear equivalents in the marine world. Ingested foreign bodies produced lesions that may have reduced the animals' welfare and, regarding commercial purposes, their productivity.

Insights into the degradation mechanism of PET and PP under marine conditions using FTIR

Plastics possess diverse functional properties that have made them extremely desirable. However, due to poor waste management practices, large quantities eventually end up in the oceans where their degradation begins. Hence, it is imperative to understand and further investigate the dynamics of this process. Currently, most relevant studies have been carried out under benign and/or controlled weather conditions. This study investigates the natural degradation of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in more extreme environments. Simulated and real marine conditions, both in the laboratory (indoors) and outdoors were applied for a duration of 140 days and results were assessed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis. SEM micrographs revealed variations in the morphologies of both plastic types. Degradation signs were shown in both plastic types, under all conditions. Findings indicated that microplastics (MPs) degraded faster than macroplastics, with PP MPs having higher weight loss (49%) than PET MPs (1%) when exposed to outdoor marine conditions. Additionally, the degradation rates of MPs-PP were higher than MPs-PET for outdoor and indoor treatments, with 1.07 × 10^-6 g/d and 4.41 × 10^-7 g/d, respectively. FTIR combined with PCA was efficient in determining the most degraded plastic types.

Microplastic intrusion into the zooplankton, the base of the marine food chain: Evidence from the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the marine environment, yet information regarding their occurrence in the food web is limited. We investigated the concentration and composition of MPs in water and diverse zooplankton groups from the Arabian Sea basin. Forty-one zooplankton tows were collected with a bongo net (330 μm mesh) from the Arabian Sea in January 2019. MPs in the surface water varied between 0 and 0.055 particles/m³, with a relatively higher concentration (0.013 ± 0.002 particles/m³) in the central Arabian Sea. Though fibrous MPs were most abundant in the seawater (77.14 %), zooplankton prefers small fragments (55.3 %). The size of MPs was distinctly smaller (277.1 ± 46.74 μm) in zooplankton than that in seawater (864.32 ± 73.72 μm), and MPs bioaccumulation was observed in almost all the zooplankton functional groups. Polymer composition revealed polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, and PVC were abundant in water and zooplankton, suggesting that the textile, fishing, shipping, and packaging industries are significant sources. The prevailing northeasterly winds, strong West India Coastal Current, and conducive westward radiated Rossby wave during January 2019 have carried the microplastic contaminated water mass away from the coast, posing a threat to the open ocean ecosystems. These results demand further attention to investigate the state of plastic pollution in the Arabian Sea basin.

Implications of Regurgitative Feeding on Plastic Loads in Northern Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis): A Study from Svalbard

Procellariiform seabirds like northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) are prone to ingest and accumulate floating plastic pieces. In the North Sea region, there is a long tradition to use beached fulmars as biomonitors for marine plastic pollution. Monitoring data revealed consistently lower plastic burdens in adult fulmars compared to younger age classes. Those findings were hypothesized to partly result from parental transfer of plastic to chicks. However, no prior study has examined this mechanism in fulmars by comparing plastic burdens in fledglings and older fulmars shortly after the chick-rearing period. Therefore, we investigated plastic ingestion in 39 fulmars from Kongsfjorden (Svalbard), including 21 fledglings and 18 older fulmars (adults/older immatures). We found that fledglings (50-60 days old) had significantly more plastic than older fulmars. While plastic was found in all fledglings, two older fulmars contained no and several older individuals barely any plastic. These findings supported that fulmar chicks from Svalbard get fed high quantities of plastic by their parents. Adverse effects of plastic on fulmars were indicated by one fragment that perforated the stomach and possibly one thread perforating the intestine. Negative correlations between plastic mass and body fat in fledglings and older fulmars were not significant.

The Ocean Plastic Incubator Chamber (OPIC) system to monitor in situ plastic degradation at sea

Marine plastic pollution is a global and pervasive environmental issue. Knowledge on plastic degradation in natural settings is still very limited due to current technological limitations, hampering our understanding of plastic fate (including its breakdown into micro- and nanoplastics) and of its risk for marine ecosystems. Here we present the proof of concept of the Ocean Plastic Incubator Chamber (OPIC), a novel equipment to follow plastic degradation in situ at sea over time. OPIC consists of a frame containing a motorised rotating stage with transparent tubes sub-assemblies where reference plastic materials are incubated and exposed to natural weathering conditions for defined time multi-years period. OPIC has been designed, tested and adapted for deployment with mooring line platforms in the open ocean with potential future application in remote environments at different depths (from shallow waters to deep sea environments). This incubator will allow us to measure different markers of plastic aging in situ in the ocean for the first time, providing new insights into the multiple and locally driven dynamics regulating plastic transformations and fate at sea.

Occurrence and characteristics of microdebris in commercial fish species of Guyana, South America

Microdebris ingestion in fish is widespread and has adverse effects on marine life. This study assessed the occurrence and type of microdebris found in three commercially important fish species from different landing sites along Guyana's coast. Visual examination of fish gut content was initially carried out using the naked eye and a hand lens. Microscopic examinations were subsequently carried out to determine the number and type of debris present. Forty percent of the fishes examined had microdebris present in their bodies. A total of 112 microdebris particles were collected from 90 specimens of three species (Bagre bagre, Nebris microps, Macrodon ancyclodon). The microdebris particles observed included pellets, microbeads, fragments, fiber (wool), films, and foams. White-colored materials were the most frequently ingested. Most of the collected materials were large microdebris (>1 to 5 mm) that resembled pellets and microbeads. This study displayed the prevalence of microdebris ingestion by commercial fish in Guyana.

Amazing Fungi for Eco-Friendly Composite Materials: A Comprehensive Review

The continually expanding use of plastic throughout our world, along with the considerable increase in agricultural productivity, has resulted in a worrying increase in global waste and related environmental problems. The reuse and replacement of plastic with biomaterials, as well as the recycling of agricultural waste, are key components of a strategy to reduce plastic waste. Agricultural waste is characterized as lignocellulosic materials that mainly consist of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Saprobe fungi are able to convert agricultural waste into nutrients for their own growth and to facilitate the creation of mycelium-based composites (MBC) through bio-fabrication processes. Remarkably, different fungal species, substrates, and pressing and drying methods have resulted in varying chemical, mechanical, physical, and biological properties of the resulting composites that ultimately vary the functional aspects of the finished MBC. Over the last two decades, several innovative designs have produced a variety of MBC that can be applied across a range of industrial uses including in packaging and in the manufacturing of household items, furniture, and building materials that can replace foams, plastics, and wood products. Materials developed from MBC can be considered highly functional materials that offer renewable and biodegradable benefits as promising alternatives. Therefore, a better understanding of the beneficial properties of MBC is crucial for their potential applications in a variety of fields. Here, we have conducted a brief review of the current findings of relevant studies through an overview of recently published literature on MBC production and the physical, mechanical, chemical, and biological properties of these composites for use in innovative architecture, construction, and product designs. The advantages and disadvantages of various applications of mycelium-based materials (MBM) in various fields have been summarized. Finally, patent trends involving the use of MBM as a new and sustainable biomaterial have also been reviewed. The resulting knowledge can be used by researchers to develop and apply MBC in the form of eco-friendly materials in the future.

Hirudo verbana as a freshwater invertebrate model to assess the effects of polypropylene micro and nanoplastics dispersion in freshwater

Plastics are a heterogeneous class of synthetic compounds that, due to their unique characteristics find numerous applications both in industrial and civil fields. However, despite the great advantages that these materials brought in everyday life, the plastic wastes resulting from their massive use represent one of the main environmental problems at the global level. Once released, plastics persist for a long time and are subjected both to biotic and abiotic processes leading to the formation of small particles, known as micro and to nanoplastics, that interact with organisms, accumulating inside tissues and risking to enter in the trophic chain. Among the different types of plastic, polypropylene (PP) is one of the diffused, widely exploited in food and textile industries for disposable packaging and to produce surgical masks. Owing to the huge distribution and the resultant abundant presence of PP waste products, it results necessary investigate the possible toxicity on living organisms. For these reasons, here we analyzed the effects of PP micro and nanoplastics dispersed in freshwater, using the medicinal leech Hirudo verbana as invertebrate model. To better follow the plastics fate, fluorescent particles, labeled with a fluorophore, have been used. Animals were examined at various timings after plastics exposure and results were analyzed by means of microscopy, immunofluorescent and molecular biology analyses. After assessing the entrance of PP fragments into leech tissues, the activation of the innate immune response was evaluated. The results show that the presence of micro and nanoplastics induces an initial physical protection that consists in the secretion of mucus, followed by an increase of blood vessels and the recruitment of immune cells, in particular macrophages. Moreover, macrophages were directly involved in both phagocytic and encapsulation processes, as demonstrated by acid phosphatase (ACP) histoenzymatic and Thioflavin-T assays, expressing specific pro-inflammatory factors, such as HvRNASET2 and HmAIF-1, as demonstrated by immunolocalization and qPCR experiments. Finally, the expression levels of genes related to oxidative stress-induced enzymes have been investigated, in order to evaluate the possible increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), due to the entry into the leech tissues of PP micro and nanoplastics. This work allows deepening the current knowledge of the possible harmful effects on human health deriving from micro and nanoplastics dispersion, leading new insight about freshwater ecosystems that often represent the first environments interested in plastic pollution.

Occurrence of Natural and Synthetic Micro-Fibers in the Mediterranean Sea: A Review

Among microplastics (MPs), fibers are one of the most abundant shapes encountered in the aquatic environment. Growing attention is being focused on this typology of particles since they are considered an important form of marine contamination. Information about microfibers distribution in the Mediterranean Sea is still limited and the increasing evidence of the high amount of fibers in the aquatic environment should lead to a different classification from MPs which, by definition, are composed only of synthetic materials and not natural. In the past, cellulosic fibers (natural and regenerated) have been likely included in the synthetic realm by hundreds of studies, inflating “micro-plastic” counts in both environmental matrices and organisms. Comparisons are often hampered because many of the available studies have explicitly excluded the micro-fibers (MFs) content due, for example, to methodological problems. Considering the abundance of micro-fibers in the environment, a chemical composition analysis is fundamental for toxicological assessments. Overall, the results of this review work provide the basis to monitor and mitigate the impacts of microfiber pollution on the sea ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea, which can be used to investigate other basins of the world for future risk assessment.

Plastic in digestive tracts and gills of cod and herring from the Baltic Sea

Plastic litter is widespread on our planet and is recognized as a contaminant of high concern. Plastic ingestion and retention in gills were studied in two key Baltic fish species: herring (Clupea harengus L.) and cod (Gadus morhua L.). In total, 183 fish from the southern Baltic Sea were analysed. Plastic litter was found in digestive tracts of 12.7 and 14.8% of herrings and cods, respectively. In addition, gills were shown to constitute an important transfer route of plastic to cod (9.9% of cods) but not to herring thus likely reflecting species-specific differences in fish lifestyles and/or water filtering capacity. No more than one plastic item per individual was found except for three fish with two items in their stomachs. Dominant microplastics (<5 mm) (MPs) (88.6% of all items) composed of irregular fragments, fibres and foils (61.3%, 25.8% and 12.9% of all MPs, respectively) were followed by meso- (5-25 mm) and macro-plastics (>25 mm) (5.7% each of all items). Plastic ingestion and retention in gills did not affect fish body condition assessed by Fulton's K index, although herrings that ingested plastic particles beyond the microplastic size range (i.e. >5 mm) were characterized by the lowest condition indices. All plastic items recovered from fish exhibited clear signs of weathering and surface extended due to their roughness and fragmentation which may enhance both sorption properties for chemical compounds and/or their leaching. Nevertheless, chemical contaminant levels in herring muscles were not different than in a plastic-free group. The vast majority of fibres found in fish was identified as air-borne or procedural contamination and were excluded from further analyses. In addition, the vessel's paint dust found in fish stressed the need for strict quality assurance also during fish sampling.

Bioaccumulation of additives and chemical contaminants from environmental microplastics in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

Marine microplastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems we face. The growth of plastic production has not ceased since the 1950s and it is currently estimated that 368 tons of plastic were produced in 2019 (PlascticsEurope, 2020). Geyer et al. (2017) estimate that 79% of the plastic produced in the world still remains in the environment; this plastic due to the effect of degradation and subsequent fragmentation, is present in the form of microplastics in all oceans and, due to its small size can be ingested by fish and filter-feeding organisms. In addition, microplastics have additives and chemical contaminants associated with them, and the potential effect of microplastic ingestion on marine organisms, and through them, the potential risk to humans, is unknown. In the present study, European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were fed for 60 days with three treatments: Control (feed), MP (feed with 10% virgin microplastics) and EMP (feed with 10% environmental microplastics), being the first study to evaluate long-term accumulation of contaminants due to ingestion of environmental microplastics (EMP) in fish. Both plastic additives such as PBDEs, and chemical contaminants adsorbed from the environment such as PCBs and DDE, were analyzed in the EMP, feed and liver. The concentration of microplastics in the feed was calculated based on the MPs/zooplankton wet weight (WW) ratio of 0.1 found in an area of maximum accumulation in the Canary Islands. Therefore, it is an experiment that simulates real conditions, but in the worst-case scenario, using both, concentrations based on data obtained in oceanographic campaigns and microplastics collected from the environment. Our results show that in this scenario, additives and chemical contaminants adsorbed on EMPs bioaccumulate in fish liver due to long-term ingestion of microplastics.

PBDEs in the marine environment: Sources, pathways and the role of microplastics

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are an important group of additives in plastics that increase resistance to ignition and slow down the rate of burning. Because of concerns about their environmental and human health impacts, however, some of the most widely employed BFRs, including hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and commercial mixtures of penta-, octa- and deca- (poly)bromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been restricted or phased out. In this review, the oceanic sources and pathways of PBDEs, the most widely used BFRs, are evaluated and quantified, with particular focus on emissions due to migration from plastics into the atmosphere versus emissions associated with the input of retarded or contaminated plastics themselves. Calculations based on available measurements of PBDEs in the environment suggest that 3.5 and 135 tonnes of PBDEs are annually deposited in the ocean when scavenged by aerosols and through air-water gas exchange, respectively, with rivers contributing a further ∼40 tonnes. Calculations based on PBDE migration from plastic products in use or awaiting or undergoing disposal yield similar net inputs to the ocean but indicate a relatively rapid decline over the next two decades in association with the reduction in the production and recycling of these chemicals. Estimates associated with the input of PBDEs to the ocean when "bound" to marine plastics and microplastics range from about 360 to 950 tonnes per year based on the annual production of plastics and PBDEs over the past decade, and from about 20 to 50 tonnes per annum based on the abundance and distribution of PBDEs in marine plastic litter. Because of the persistence and pervasiveness of plastics in the ocean and diffusion coefficients for PBDEs on the order of 10^-20 to 10^-27 m² s^-1, microplastics are likely to act as a long-term source of these chemicals though gradual migration. Locally, however, and more important from an ecotoxicological perspective, PBDE migration may be significantly enhanced when physically and chemically weathered microplastics are exposed to the oily digestive fluids conditions of fish and seabirds.

Adsorption of environmental contaminants on micro- and nano-scale plastic polymers and the influence of weathering processes on their adsorptive attributes

Increases in plastic-related pollution and their weathering can be a serious threat to environmental sustainability and human health, especially during the present COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus) pandemic. Planetary risks of plastic waste disposed from diverse sources are exacerbated by the weathering-driven alterations in their physical-chemical attributes and presence of hazardous pollutants mediated through adsorption. Besides, plastic polymers act as vectors of toxic chemical contaminants and pathogenic microbes through sorption onto the 'plastisphere' (i.e., plastic-microbe/biofilm-environment interface). In this review, the effects of weathering-driven alterations on the plastisphere are addressed in relation to the fate/cycling of environmental contaminants along with the sorption/desorption dynamics of micro-/nano-scale plastic (MPs/NPs) polymers for emerging contaminants (e.g., endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and certain heavy metals). The weathering processes, pathways, and mechanisms governing the adsorption of specific environmental pollutants on MPs/NPs surface are thus evaluated in relation to the physicochemical alterations based on several kinetic and isotherm studies. Consequently, the detailed evaluation on the role of the complex associations between weathering and physicochemical properties of plastics should help us gain a better knowledge with respect to the transport, behavior, fate, and toxicological chemistry of plastics along with the proper tactics for their sustainable remediation.

Residual additives in marine microplastics and their risk assessment - A critical review

This review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the risk assessment of plastic-associated residual additives, i.e. residual monomers, degradation products and additives, in the marine environment, also considering effects of weathering and bioavailability. Experimental studies have found a number of organic and metal additive compounds in leachates from plastics, and the analysis of weathered plastic particles, such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene particles sampled on beaches and shorelines, has identified residual additives, such as flame retardants, plasticizers, UV stabilizers and antioxidants. While the transfer of e.g. PBDEs to organisms upon ingestion has been demonstrated, studies on uptake and bioaccumulation of plastic-associated chemicals are inconclusive. Studies on hazard and risk assessments are few, and focus on monomers and/or a limited number of high concentration additives, such as phthalates and flame retardants. The risk assessment results vary between low, moderate and high risks of specific additives, and are not necessarily consistent for the same compound. Given the large number of chemicals potentially introduced into the marine environment with plastic particles and the challenges associated with the correct quantification of exposure concentrations and toxicity thresholds, the question arises whether new risk assessment concepts may be needed.

Seasonal and geographic variations of marine litter: A comprehensive study from the island of Cyprus

Twenty beaches located around the island of Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean, were identified as monitoring sites. They were monitored over four monitoring sessions from January to September 2021 to assess marine litter amounts, categories, and spatiotemporal distribution. A total of 42,499 marine litter items were collected. The average marine litter density was 0.19 items/m². Most of the collected items were plastics, with single-use plastics being ubiquitous. Plastic fragments >2.5 cm made a significant proportion of the plastic litter collected, particularly in the northern coasts of the island. Cigarette butts were abundant on touristic beaches, especially in the tourism period. The study identifies significant temporal and spatial variations in the abundance and distribution of marine litter, as well as variations related to waste management or lack thereof.

Increased transfer of trace metals and Vibrio sp. from biodegradable microplastics to catfish Clarias gariepinus

Microplastic ingestion has been documented in various aquatic species. This causes physical damage, and additionally contaminated microplastics transfer attached pollutants and microbial pathogens to ingesting organisms. Continued metal accumulation can lead to toxicity and adverse health effects; attached microbial pathogens can cause dysbiosis - which lowers host immunity and promotes infections. Catfish, Clarias gariepinus, are a major food source in Southeast Asia, a hotspot of plastic pollution. This study aimed to quantify the transfer of the trace metals copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) -at environmentally relevant concentrations-from microplastics (polyamide 12, PA12, and polylactic acid, PLA) to catfish. Fish were reared for three months and exposed to seven different combinations of feed, supplemented with plastics and metals. At monthly intervals, fish gills, intestines, liver, and edible muscles were analysed for Cu and Pb concentrations using ICP-OES, and the intestines content assessed for Vibrio sp.. Our results showed that biodegradable PLA transferred higher amounts of metals to catfish than expected and also led to increased Vibrio counts in the intestines compared to PA12. Trace metal accumulation was significantly different in varying tissues, with highest concentrations observed in the gills, followed by liver, intestines, and lastly edible muscles. The results of this study further support the existing evidence that microplastics act as efficient shuttles to concentrate and transfer metals. They also indicate that their uptake can cause dysbiosis (increased numbers of Vibrio sp.). Most importantly, however, our study highlights that biodegradable polymers, such as PLA, could actually pose a greater environmental threat when ingested compared to the more common polymers such as PA12.

Combined effects of polystyrene microplastics and copper on antioxidant capacity, immune response and intestinal microbiota of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Microplastics (MPs) coexist with other pollutants (such as heavy metals) in water, adversely impacting aquatic organisms, which might cause unpredictable ecological risks. This study aims to evaluate the effect of copper (Cu²⁺) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on antioxidant capacity, immune response and intestinal microbiota of Nile tilapia. Cu²⁺ and PS-MPs co-exposure enhanced Cu²⁺ bioaccumulation in the liver of fish compared with Cu²⁺-alone exposure. Fish exposed to PS-MPs and Cu²⁺ displayed histopathologic alterations in the liver, intestine and gill. Exposure at low concentrations of Cu²⁺ in the C0 and CP0 groups can improve antioxidant capacity and immune response, while oxidative damage and inflammation existed in the high concentration of Cu²⁺ groups. Intestinal microbiota results showed that the diversity and structure were changed by Cu²⁺ and PS-MPs exposure, and harmful bacterium even increased at high concentration of Cu²⁺ and PS-MPs exposure groups. All in all, PS-MPs aggravate the accumulation of Cu²⁺ and lead to perturbations in biological systems of Nile tilapia.

Microplastics aggravate the bioaccumulation and toxicity of coexisting contaminants in aquatic organisms: A synergistic health hazard

There are ongoing controversies regarding the effects of microplastics (MPs) on the bioaccumulation and toxicity of coexisting contaminants in aquatic organisms. This study aims to quantitatively evaluate this issue based on 870 endpoints from 40 publications. It was shown that the presence of MPs significantly increased the bioaccumulation of co-contaminants by 31%, with high statistical power and without obvious publication bias. The aggravated bioaccumulation was also revealed by the strongly positive correlation between bioconcentration factors in the presence and the absence of MPs. Furthermore, the subgroup/regression analyses indicated that the vector effect of MPs on other chemicals was affected by multiple factors and their interactions, such as particle size and exposure time. In addition, a relatively comprehensive biomarker profile was recompiled from included studies to assess the changes in toxicity caused by combined exposure. Results confirmed that the presence of MPs obviously exacerbated the toxicity of co-contaminants by 18%, manifested by the potentiated cytotoxicity, endocrine disruption, immunotoxicity and oxidative stress, implying a synergistic health hazard. Ultimately, the mismatches between laboratory and field conditions were discussed, and the recommendations for future research were offered.

Detection of plastic-associated compounds in marine sponges

Plastic waste is a ubiquitous form of marine pollution and recent studies have identified threats of plastic debris and the associated chemical compounds to wildlife. Sponges pump substantial quantities of water and are important in benthic-pelagic coupling, making them susceptible to interacting with such pollutants in the water column. Here, a method to detect common plastic-associated compounds including phthalates, a phthalate metabolite, bisphenol-A, and a brominated flame retardant in sponge tissue was developed. The method was applied to samples of Xestospongia muta and Niphates digitalis from a reef in the Florida Keys. All sponge samples had quantifiable levels of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, with trace levels of the associated metabolite detected in some N. digitalis samples. There was no quantifiable detection of bisphenol-A, or the brominated flame retardant. This work is a preliminary assessment of the relationship between plastic marine debris and marine sponges.

Contaminant concentrations and risks associated with the Pacific oyster in the highly urbanized San Diego Bay

Contaminant concentrations in filter-feeding shellfish may indicate the health of coastal waters and consumption risks. Widespread expansion of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and its popularity as food make it a useful sentinel. We surveyed intertidal Pacific oysters in San Diego Bay, California for contaminants during summer 2018 and winter 2019. We compared contaminants in Pacific oyster to California mussel from California's State Mussel Watch Program (1993-2003) and human consumption thresholds. Contaminants such as neonicotinoid and chlorinated pesticides, selenium, and several metals were higher in Pacific oysters in summer, while PBDEs, benzylbutyl phthalate, and plastics were higher in winter. Contaminant levels were generally lower in Pacific oyster than mussel except for copper and zinc. Bay-wide PCB concentrations in oysters exceeded thresholds but individual samples (locations) also met or surpassed chlordane, PCB and PAH thresholds. Monitoring and risk assessments that consider species' biology, season, location, effects of multiple contaminants, and human consumption patterns will contribute to more effective consumption guidelines.

Microplastic distribution, abundance, and composition in the sediments, water, and fishes of the Red and Mediterranean seas, Egypt

This study records the extent of microplastics (MPs) in the surface water, sediments, and fishes of the Mediterranean and Red seas in Egypt. In sediment and water samples, the Ras Gharib station in the Red sea and Damietta and Port Said stations in the Mediterranean sea exhibited the highest microplastic abundance, while the lowest concentration was found in the Ain Sukhna station in the Red Sea and Marsa Matruh station in the Mediterranean sea. Rayon and polyethylene terephthalate were the most frequently found polymers in fishes. The results highlighted the abundant existence of microplastics in sediments, water, and fishes of the Mediterranean and Red seas, thereby improving our understanding of the environmental risks posed by microplastics to fisheries and marine ecosystems and the need for measures to diminish the flux of plastics to the marine settings.

Adsorption behaviour and interaction of organic micropollutants with nano and microplastics - A review

Nano/microplastics (NPs/MPs) and organic micropollutants are contaminants exerting serious threats to aquatic ecosystems, which are further aggravated through their interactions. Organic micropollutants can adsorb on the surface of NPs/MPs, enter to the digestive systems of aquatic organisms with NPs/MPs, and desorb from the surface inside the organism. Consequently, the migration behaviour of organic micropollutants is significantly affected increasing their risk to accumulate in the food chain. Therefore, understanding the adsorption interactions between NPs/MPs and organic micropollutants is critical for evaluating the fate and impact of NPs/MPs in the environment. This review article provides an overview about the role of NPs/MPs as (temporary) sinks for organic micropollutants but also as primary sources of organic micropollutants through the leaching of plastic additives. Specifically, the following aspects are discussed: adsorption/desorption mechanisms (e.g., hydrophobic partitioning interaction, surface adsorption by van der Waals forces or hydrogen bonding, and pore filling), influencing environmental factors (e.g., pH, salinity, and dissolved organic matter), leaching of plastic additives from NPs/MPs, and potential ecotoxicological effects arising from the interactions of NPs/MPs and organic micropollutants.

Calculation and Experimental Validation of a Novel Approach Using Solubility Parameters as Indicators for the Extraction of Additives in Plastics

Accurately quantifying chemical additives with adverse health effects in plastic products is critical for environmental safety and risk assessment. In this work, a novel approach using solubility parameters (δ) as indicators for the extraction of additives in plastics was developed. The mechanism was evaluated by using 10 organic solvents with different solubility parameters to extract brominated flame-retardant-decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) in polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Certified reference materials (CRMs) or CRM candidate materials were applied as matrix materials. The extracted BDE-209 and solubility parameters of solvents could fit into a curve of a quadratic function. The value of abscissa corresponding to the vertex of the function was close to the solubility parameter of plastic calculated by the group contribution method (Δδ < 0.37). Toluene, n-hexane, and acetone were the solvents with high extraction efficiency for PE, PP, and PET, confirming the feasibility of the developed approach. The results of ethyl acetate and acetone indicated the high weight of functional groups affecting the dissolution behavior. The developed approach was further verified by analyzing penta-/octa-BDE and phthalate esters in PET and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and finally applied to analyze 15 plastic products made of PP, PE, PET, polystyrene, and PVC. The detected tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), BDE-209, decabromodiphenyl ethane, and di(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate all matched the approach and verified its practicability for field sample analysis.

The sorption of persistent organic pollutants in microplastics from the coastal environment

Microplastic (MP) pellets were sampled from six sandy beaches around Taiwan in order to investigate the concentrations and compositions of POPs, including: PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs, PBDEs, PCBs, PBBs, and their congeners. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs on the surface (C_s) of MP pellets from the six sampling sites were from 1.9 to 14.6 pg∙g^-1, while the overall concentrations within MPs (C_t) were from 95.0 to 1110.6 pg∙g^-1. As PCDD/Fs were adsorbed into the inner part of MPs, a ratio of the total concentrations to surficial concentration of MPs (C_t/C_s) was as high as 355.2 times. The C_t/C_s of other POPs were also significant, such as PBDEs being found up to 8068 times, which could be attributed to artificial addition during manufacturing processes as flame-retardant substances. Primary compositions of PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs, and PBDEs on the MPs in our POP congener analysis were all found containing species with higher number of chlorine or bromine, which were adsorbed on the MP surface more easily due to their relative higher K_OW.

Evaluating the fate of hexabromocyclododecanes in the coastal environment: Fugacity analysis using field data

Abundant use of plastic materials has increased the amount of microplastics (MPs) and related hazardous chemicals in the marine environment. Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), brominated flame retardants added to expanded polystyrene (EPS), have been detected in biotic and abiotic samples. In this study, the partition constants of HBCDs between plastics and seawater (K_Psw) were determined. Fugacities of HBCDs in EPS, seawater, sediment, and mussels were obtained to determine the directions of the diffusive flux. The fugacities in EPS (f_EPS) were greater than those in seawater (f_sw), sediment (f_sed), and mussels (f_swmussel-EPS and f_mussel-rock) by three orders of magnitude, indicating that EPS plastics are a significant source of HBCDs. The f_mussel-rock of α-HBCD in rock mussels was greater than f_sw by factors of 1.7, whereas the f_mussel-rock of γ-HBCD was smaller than f_sw by factors of 16, indicating the bioisomerization from γ-to α-HBCD. The relatively constant concentration ratio of β-HBCD to the total HBCDs indicated that β-HBCD is a sufficient tracer for determining the diffusive flux. The f_sed values of HBCDs were greater than f_sw by factors of 17-28, implying a probable advective vertical flow of HBCDs from the EPS plastics, which requires further investigation.

Ingestion of microplastics and mesoplastics by Trachurus declivis (Jenyns, 1841) retrieved from the food of the Australasian gannet Morus serrator: First documented report from New Zealand

During the process of studying some morphological characters of fish found in the food of the Australasian gannet Morus serrator breeding at Horuhoru Rock and Mahuki islands in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, one carangid specimen of fish species Trachurus declivis out of the 25 fish specimens examined revealed seven small plastic particles in its stomach of different colours: black, red, blue, green, and transparent. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to identify the compositions of the particles as low and high density polyethylene, poly (methyl methacrylate), polypropylene, and a copolymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile, and methacrylamide. The plastic particles comprised several different shapes and sizes, ranging between 4.5 and 10 mm, and are therefore categorized as micro-and mesoplastic fragments.

Microplastic contamination and fluxes in a touristic area at the SE Gulf of California

Microplastics (MPs) are long-lasting anthropogenic pollutants, observed in all types of natural environments. The MPs abundance and their temporal variability in beach sands, surface waters (manta trawl), and suspended sediments (sediment trap) were assessed in Mazatlán, Mexico, a tourism destination on the northern Pacific coast, under the hypothesis that MP contamination is influenced by rainfall and population density. The MP concentrations in beach sands from urban and rural areas nearby Mazatlán (4-36 MPs m^-2) and in surface waters (1.7-2.0 MPs m^-3) were comparable between type of sampling sites; whereas the MP fluxes in sediment trap samples varied widely (40-782 MPs m^-2 day^-1) with highest values during the rainfall season. The MPs recovered were mostly white/clear (48-54%), and the prevailing shapes were fragments in beach sands and surface waters (59-80%), and fibers (75%) in suspended sediments. The synthetic polymers polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate were the most abundant in the study area.
